windows defender missing on startup---Windows 8.1

Question: windows defender missing on startup---Windows 8.1

It is incredible that so many people have this ongoing problem and that as rich a company as you are, that you have not provided a general fix via automatic security updates, etc. Perhaps if people came together with a lawsuit against your company, the issue
would be permanently resolved. Either way, my CCleaner keeps prompting me that "defender is missing at startup" and to press to fix problem. Well, it never fixes the problem permanently, which is annoying.
Sincerely,
Henry Reyes

Preferred Solution: windows defender missing on startup---Windows 8.1

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Someone please help me

My Dell Inspiron Laptop is having problems. I had a bad Rootkit on it, called Alureon. I was recommended to use Windows Defender Offline, using a CD. After a couple of hours of scanning, it removed two Alureon rootkits and 3 other viruses. So, I thought I was good to go. So, I restarted my computer, like it told me to, and now....

It will NOT startup. It will show the "Starting Windows" logo, then stop, flash the BSOD for a split second, then restarts, only to repeat the process.

When I do the startup repair, it won't do anything. I had it running for over an hour, and it wouldn't do anything.

It WILL NOT boot any other way. I cannot use any of the Safe modes. It'll do the same thing. after it loads my files, it BSOD for a split second and restarts.

However, when I boot it up again using WDO, it takes a couple of attempts, but it'll start up. Should I scan again?

Also, I managed to go into diagnostics (before startup) and it says nothing is wrong with my computer....

HELP! I have important documents on this computer....I CANNOT restore it to default. PLEASE TELL ME THERE IS ANOTHER WAY!!!!

EDIT:

I don't know if this is at all useful, but I managed to shut off the automatic restart after failure...And I actually got a glance at the BSOD.
It says under Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A98E8, 0xFFFFFFFFC000000D, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)

Answer:Cannot startup Windows 7 after using Windows Defender Offline

On my xp (hopefully your 7 is close enough) when the restart loop happened, it's because a setting in "startup & recovery" was set to "automatically restart" in the "system failure" section of the "startup & recovery" pane. How I get to it is: RIGHT click "my computer" → "properties" → in the "startup & recovery" section "settings" → UNCHECK "automatically restart" → "OK & APPLY" your way out. I hope this can help you at least get out of the restart loop even though it's xp stuff. good luck

I haven't really had an issue with this before that i noticed, but i had AVG 2012 professional for the longest time and forgot to disable the firewall on it before uninstalling, i recently fixed that issue today and it's not showing that as an issue anymore when i run Microsoft Fix it. The firewall would show an error then but now it just shows an hourglass on my mouse and does nothing. I downloaded FSS and here is a copy of my log i would appreciate any help i can get, thank you kindly. Also in my services I don't have Windows Event Controller. Thank you!

Answer:Windows defender and Windows Firewall missing

Hello dkdakota and welcome to Seven Forums.

Try running the AVG removal tool as per the instructions provided:

AVG | Download tools and utilities

Next, check for any damaged or corrupt Windows 7 system files by running a System File Checker scan. Run the scan from an elevated command prompt (option two) and if problems are found, run the scan at least 3 times. Reboot the computer immediately after each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Since a very recent reinstall of Windows 10, Windows Defender now keeps wanting to be part of Start-up..In the past it seems to me that it was only activated if your anti-virus protection was off or if none was installed. Now it seems as if the intention of Windows Defender has changed to be actively running when windows starts.

Can I allow it to run along with my antivirus & anti-malware programs?

Answer:Windows Defender wants to run at startup

You can have only one Anti-Virus program running on your computer or they will conflict. When you install a 3rd party AV product, Windows Defender automatically disables. You can run Malware programs like Malwarebytes along with Windows Defender.
What is your 3rd party AV Software?

It had been a while since I used my windows defender. Last night I went to use it and it was not there. When I click on it I am told " file not found ".I have tried to access it through the control panel as wellas programs. It is like it was never on my computer. I also tried to download windows defender from windows down load and I got a message that read " windows vista came with windows defender" the down load was not completed. What I would like to know is, what could have possibly happened and how can I get my windows defender back. Oh yes, I also went through my msconfig. then start up. It does list defender but it says 0% program file. I am not sure what else to say, that is pretty much my problem. Thank you for everyones time.

Answer:missing windows defender

I keep Windows Defender disabled in Windows Vista. There are better malware protection programs out there to use. Two free ones that are recommended and used by many members in these forums is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware.

Hiya guys.

In a nutshell my windows defender is missing. I first noticed the issue when i tried to click on the open security control center option (where you would manage exceptions to the antivirus for example) in the update & security tab in the settings, and nothing happened. If i click on the windef icon on the taskbar same result, it dosent react, no hung processes or nothing. If i try to open it in safe mode it gets wierder: it closes the settings window as soon as i try to click on the update & security tab.

In the policy editor (gpedit.msc) i dont even have a windef folder just windef antivirus and windef smartscreen and one more which i cant recall (in work atm).

I tried to run the sfc scan which stops at 50% in both normal and safe modes. It says it cannot perform the requested operation.

I tried the DISM scan/restore thing i get an error message saying that the specified buffer contains ill formed data.

Antivirus says everythings a-okay.

Im at about my wits end here, any help would be appreciated.

Best Regards
Sage

Each time I restart the computer, Windows Defender pops up and asks me to turn it on. After I turn it on and restart, the same thing happens again. How can I get rid of this annoying message? I wanted to try to reinstall Defender, but I can't find it using Add/Remove Programs or Revo Uninstaller.

Thanks for the help, and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

You have a conflict with Windows Defender and your A/V and or firewall.

Suggestion. Uninstall your A/V and get Microsoft MSE Miscrosoft Security Essentials. Made to work with Windows 7. You will not even need defender once you switch.

I've Googled this to death and have yet to find a satisfactory explanation as to why Windows Defender even has a startup delay or a viable method to change it to Automatic. All is greyed out in Services for the program, so can't do anything there. There was one suggestion to change a value in the registry from 1 to zero, but again Windows would not allow the change.

Not a big deal... Guess I'm just a control freak...

Anyone got some sage advice on this?

Answer:Windows Defender Startup Delay

There is absolutely no start up delay on my windows 8 it is immediate
I have pinned it to the taskbar by windows key - type defender - search parameter - apps (applications) on right of screen.
It launches immediately I click the icon
Do you have the settings correctly made.
The ability to schedule a scan still exists, but not using the GUI as on previous editions of Windows
See this for how and for the settings
http://www.winhelp.us/configure-windows-defender-in-windows-8.html#.UjW3I29wbcs

The ability to change the service start type from automatic is a super protected access right.
There are two basic opinions on this
One is that it will be available if for some reason it was changed from automatic by another program
eg it is disabled when another AV is installed

SO PRESUMABLY yours is not automatic.
DO YOU HAVE ANOTHER AV installed

The other opinion is that it is a fault in windows 8.
Either way if yours WAS set automatic I see little cause to trouble yourself about it

Meant in the nicest possible way

I would caution against allowing your control freak to change registry keys to try and amend any aspect

"Windows Defender has a kernel-mode driver (wdfilter.sys) that registers a Registry callback filter which protects Defender’s registry keys."

When logging into Windows, Windows Defender always greets me with the a message complaining that it is turned off and whether I want to turn it on.

Since I already use antivirus/spywareprotection software, I certainly don't want to use Windows Defender. But how can I keep it from complaining?

I already discussed this problem in another forum, and there was the recommendation that I should go to ControlPanel/ActionCenter and switch off the security messages. This did not help - I have switched off all security messages (except "Windows Update"), but the message still occurs.

Answer:Windows Defender always complaining at startup

First check in msconfig (click start orb, type msconfig). Click the startup tab in msconfig and uncheck windows defender if its enabled there.

Since yesterday I've been having a tidyup of my system, taking programs off, and putting a few on. Because of this the pc has needed to reboot a few times to complete the process. On every occasion, the defender icon is showing with an exclamation mark in it, which when you click, tells me that I haven't scanned for 12 days, but the schedule is to run on Saturdays at 5pm every week.I've just run a scan to keep it happy, but its still telling me I've not scanned for 12 days.Any ideas? as I'm begining to get a little fed up with problems with this program. Thanks in advance.Steve

Answer:Every pc startup Windows Defender needs to scan

This is a pretty common Defender issue. What seems to help a lot of times is deleting the previous definition file. To do this go to Start>run>Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C} . Answer yes to the window that asks "Do you really want to delete this file?". Check for updates and Defender should update to the latest definition file.

Hello, I need help with restoring Windows Firewall and Defender. I am running Windows 7 64 Bit. A few weeks ago I was infected by a trojan called "System Progressive protection". I used an uninstall guide for removal but I am unable to enable Windows Firewall and Defender. I get Error 0x800070424 whenever I try to open either Windows Firewall and Defender.
I am currently using anti-virus software provided by my internet service provider, but I would still like the option of having Windows Firewall and Defender available to me. I am not very computer literate and would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Hi.
The opencl.dll error is nothing - don't worry about it.

For the DISM repair, suggest you download the W10 ISO from MSTechBench and point to it with the DISM command as shown in the tut:

Missing in what regard? The shortcut is gone?Create a new one and point it to "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MsAsCui.exe"It's not worth using anyway, the only thing it's worth having running for is notification of changed startup entries but StartMon or WinPatrol do that and the latter lots more anyway.

I've Googled this a few times with no results.

I'm working on an older Acer laptop that has Vista Basic on it. It had a lot of malware, which I've removed. However, Windows Defender doesn't work. It had some sort of 0x000etc. error when I tried to launch Windows Defender from the Control Panel (Security section).

I tried a few fixes I found on Google, and NOW... not even that error. If I click on "Windows Defender", I get the error "Application not found" with "Explorer.EXE" in the error window title. If I click the sublink below Windows Defender ("Scan for spyware and other potentially unwanted software"), I get "Windows cannot find C:\Program. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

I downloaded an offline installation file for Windows Defender, but running that simply lets me know that it can't install, because Vista already has Windows Defender.

How do I fix this? I'm really at a loss. I've tried the registry fix scattered over the internet, does nothing. All related services are started and automatic (I believe RPC and DCOM are the services, going from memory). Please help!

Recently on starup windows defender pops up and says the service has not started. Then it starts. This is a new installation and it happened about a wk later. I dont know how to stop this, in all my time of tech support never came across this problem.

Defender will be included with MSE and your current Defender will be turned off by default

Hi,

I am having a bit of a frustrating time with windows defender at the moment. It's stopping the tbpanel.exe program that came with my Xpertvision 8500GT graphics card from running. I can't find out how to get defender to stop blocking this application. I have looked all over the net for a remedy to this and all I find is either of no use, or instructions on how to remove or disable it, which is not what I want to do. I'd also like to avoid turning off UAC or Defender as that would be leaving my system vulnerable.

Anyone got any ideas?

You cant reinstall Windows Defender cause it's packaged with Windows. There's a possibility that a virus killed or is killing Windows Defender, if you're willing, reinstall OS.

When I started up this morning, a bubble message popped up that Windows Defender is turned off.  When I turn it on, it is immediately turned off.  I was using Bitdefender Internet Security until last week.  When Microsoft pushed me into updating to 10, it removed / turned off Bitdefender and switched to Windows Defender.

I tried to run Malwarebytes (have the paid version), but it refuses to open.

Ran current version of TDSS Killer and and scan found no threats.

What do I do?

hi all,

hope i'm posting in the right place as i think Windows Defender is classified as a System/Security feature.

My problem is that Windows Defender is blocking my Yahoo Messenger 8.1 during startup.

I keep getting the Startup Program blocked notification whenever i boot up Vista although i have already disabled the Windows Defender services.

I've tried to uninstall and reinstall YM after restarting numerous times and the problems still persists.

FYI, I did a installation of the YM for Vista version and encountered no problems.

Anyone has any ideas ? Let me know if any further info is required

Much appreciated !

I have two programs (Bionic manager to run [email protected] and Riva Tuner) which are prevented from running at Start-up (I.E. I have to manually give them permission to run) by Vista's UAC/Win. Defender.

Please can someone advise me how I configure Vista so that these programs arenít blocked on start-up, without disabling UAC or Defender? I've tried going into the Defender configuration settings for each program but the 'Enable' option is greyed out.

TIA

B

When I first turn on my computer, I recieve an error message: Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender Service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support on how to start a service manually.

So when I restarted, I got the same error message and when I searched on Help and Support, I couldn't get accurate results. How do I get my Windows Defender to operate? It was running fine last week except it needed an update that I neglected before. Thanks in advance.

Hello again. I'm making this because I don't like idling too long when it concerns my computer.

As part of my continued attempts at restoring functionality to my computer, I have been doing some digging, and I may have solved my Flash BSOD issue by auto-uninstalling Flash, manually removing all Flash folders and renaming NPSWF32.dll (Shockwave Flash ver. 9.0.45.0, located in C:\Windows\SysWOW64) to NPSWF32.dll.old.

Now I'm focusing on repairing the damage done by a few rootkits found prior to this thread. While waiting for instructions in virus removal, I decided to do some digging, and got Firefox to stop using the outdated version. However, I would like to have afs.sys back, as I believe it's part of the reason I have been BSOD'ing. I also need Windows Defender back, as it appears to be... missing:

I bought my mum a new HP laptop yesterday and we intended using the Windows Defender software only. The laptop came with a 60 day Nortons trial which we deselected during the installation. When installation was complete the first thing we checked was that Defender was running. Unfortunately it was disabled. We looked in the Control Panel, Action Centre. Security is listed and switched off but Virus Protection is totally missing so we can't switch it on. I saw no other option but to switch Norton on to protect the laptop. Norton had installed anyway even though we chose not to install it during set up. I really don't want to pay for a Norton upgrade in 60 days time.
My mum isn't very computer literate and I was helping her to set up the computer via Skype on another laptop as we live in different countries. Not the easiest scenario. Also I'm a mac user and my pc knowledge is very basic. I'm finding this forum very helpful!
Does anyone know what I can do about the missing antivirus part of Defender? Should I just choose a different free antivirus when the 60 days runs out or is there a way to get defender working properly?
Thanks!

Answer:New Windows 8 laptop missing defender antivirus

Go to the Norton website and use (only) their uninstaller tool to uninstall the trial version. Not sure if you will have to reactivate it to uninstall it. But, get totally rid of the darn thing. Then, see if Windows Defender is revived automatically or can be started.

Hello

After being a victim of a virus that shut down kaspersky and windows firewall I started to have this problem. The Virus is gone now after using Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware and installing the last version of kaspersky internet security 2012.

My problem now whenever I need to start windows firewall of Defender I get this message

and after going to services and trying to start the service I get this massege (For both)

I already did sfc /SCANNOW and it says nothing found.

Answer:Windows Firewall and Defender missing files

Well technically if you have kaspersky, you shouldn't need Windows firewall, kaspersky has one doesn't it? You don't want to have more than one firewall running, it causes problems. Same with Windows defender. It is possible that kaspersky turned these two features off when it was installed.

Trying to rid a Dell Latitude D630 running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit laptop of malware, trojans etc. I loaded Windows Defender Offline 64-bit on a USB stick, changed the boot order to boot from USB, but receive the error message "BOOTMGR MISSING Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart", making it unable to run the Windows Defender Offline. I do not get this error when I boot normally (from HDD), only when trying to run WDO from USB. Laptop is fully functional (albeit slow) when booting from HDD. Also, I do not have any of the install/recovery disks.

Any and all suggestions are welcomed.

I am experiencing constant BSOD shortly after startup after upgrading to the latest Windows 10 Preview Build(10532). It was happening in 10525, went away after restoring to retail build, then came back when upgrading to 10532.

I've included a mini-dump. The BSOD goes away when disabling Windows Defender. I would like to be able to use the preview build as it has updates to the precision touchpad that make it much smoother. I also want to verify this is a windows issue and not something hardware related that the preview build brings to light.

Memtest86 ran overnight with no issues. Hard drive sentinel found no problems as well.

Windows Defender, has the ability to allow you to customize which programs to be allowed to run on Windows Startup and also provide in-depth information about the program. This is pretty much the services.msc with a better GUI. To access the functionality:
Control panel –> Programs –> Windows Defender –> Tools (on top) –> Software Explorer
As you can see, the programs are classified under 4 categories to choose from. The right side has comprehensive information about the program such as whether it was shipped with the OS & whether it a digitally signed application. Having been hit with a virus or malware just recently, I am not quite sure whats going on.

First I noticed my Security Centre was not running and the windows firewall was deactivated. Normally this job would fall to my Trend Micro Titanium Security, but that seemed to been disabled also. Which I thought

I managed to install avg 2012 and malware bytes to try remove any bugs. AVG picked up a few issues and fixed them, but all further scans came back clean. Unsure if the issue is solved, the problem of Security Centre still being disabled remains.

I've tried the service.msc technique several times to no avail as the security centre just wont start and Windows Defender is no where to be seen.

Windows Defender Error: "the specified service does not exist as an installed service. (error code: 080070424)

I know this is vague, but I'm at the end of my rope. If additional information is required, Ill be happy to provide them (with necessary steps to reveal them).

I'm currently running Windows 7 - Home Premium 64bit OS.

any ideas as to why its missing?
I really dislike the regedit way of disabling/enabling; and thus wish to use gpedit

And now here's another screw-up. I'm in here trying to fix Windows Defender and I tell it to run offline. Restart the computer and let it run. Only problem is, how do you get it to stop running? Every other time Windows is forced into a situation where Startup Repair is called, Windows Defender Offline is called up instead. Canceling the scan restarts the computer, and if the problem that caused the uneventful restart to occur in the first place sends the machine back to Startup Repair, it's the same thing over again.

Answer:Running Startup Repair runs Windows Defender Offline Instead

Have you tried to do a System Restore prior to this happening? Have you tried to run sfc /scannow in Safe mode or done the repair in Repair mode. How long have you had this computer and did you do a clean install of Windows 10 or a upgrade install?

Hi there,
I'm using the pacs-portal database to help discover which things I can safely remove from the startup in windows vista 32bit. I am accessing the start-up file list using windows defender. The database indicates that explorer.exe should not normally be in the start-up and that it is probably a virus; however when I select this file all 3 buttons are inactive (Delete, Deactivate, Activate - sorry, it's in French and those are the closest translations I can think of). I also tried unsuccessfully to delete the file located on C:\Windows\eplorer.exe
I'd like to know if it is a virus and if so, how I can remove it altogether (not just from the startup)

Thanks very much

Answer:Cannot remove suspected virus from startup in Windows Defender (32bit Vista)

Conduit is associated with malware. Newer version's have been spotted in the wild as adding a service which starts with Windows. This infection can be tricky to completely remove. Below is a guide on how to properly remove this item. Make sure you follow the instructions exactly as it can render your system no longer bootable if removed incorrectly.

Hi,

In the last 2 weeks my machine has started pausing when booting into Windows. It stalls halfway through loading the system tray icons for around 20 seconds during which time the start bar dissappears. It then starts up again, the start bar loads and it finishes booting up although there are less icons in the system tray than I would usually expect e.g. volume control although it is enabled to be shown in the system tray in control panel.

I've ran my installed McAfee and Kaspersky online but nothing. I use Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware regularly and they're not reporting anything either.

Odd! Can you help please? Thanks in advance

But my system 32 folder is empty
Startup repair doesn't work and I can't even boot in safe mode

Answer:Windows 7 infinite startup boot/missing system32

If you're missing the System32 folder, this contains a lot of the files which Windows needs to work. Do you have a lot of personal data on the machine? If so, we can walk you through some methods for backing them up, but it looks like you'll need to do a re-installation of Win 7.

Hi,

recently I have failed to boot with the message "bootmgr is missing" or "there has been a disk error" on windows 7. I installed windows 7 about 3 years ago on a student licence but have lost the disk in the meantime (legitimate disk downloaded and burned when I was a student, still have the key).

I have downloaded a legit repair disk from microsoft. However, it doesn't recognise my os (the list is blank when I choose repair) and asks that I insert my windows 7 DVD to install drivers to recognise my OS. If I proceed without, it says that my issue cannot be resolved.

Seems odd that my comp would start sometimes if bootmgr was not present - surely it would either be there or not?

So basically wondering if there is anthing I can do, with a repair disk but no windows 7 disk to fix this. I run an old dual opteron 280 setup that could be failing I suppose - the hard disk is a samsung HD103SJ that is about as old as the windows install. Clean system so don't think malware is an issue.

Any help appreciated,

thanks,

gubar

Answer:Bootmgr is missing or disk error on Windows 7 startup?

Sounds like your bootmgr is corrupt. If you can borrow a win 7 cd from someone you maybe able to repair it. Or you may just have to reinstall win 7 . Being you still have your key. That should not be a problem as long as win7 version you borrow. Is same version you used the frist time. But on the other side it may be your hard drive. If you can get into your windows now. I would try running a check disk on it. If you do get it back up and running. I would go into maintance on the main menu and make a system repair disk to be on the safe side.

This hard drive may be infected by VIRUS! This is the message at startup of windows. The message before was:BOOTMGR is missing and windows did not start.

Answer:Remove BOOTMGR is missing message at startup of Windows 7

Your hard drive has crashed, you could try reloading Windows but you may need a new drive. Nothing in that message indicates a virus.

So I've encountered something strange with my computer. I was performing maintenance that had a long time coming, and decided to take out some of my startup programs. Now I know to keep Microsoft Windows Operating System, however when I looked in msconfig, it's not there. At all. As far as restore points go, I have none (have already tried), and reinstallation is out of the question, not to mention it doesn't make sense that I should because the computer is reacting as if it's in there and checked. I'm thinking it may have something to do with a registry setting.

I'm running Windows 7 Home 64 bit. The last time I remembered it in there was sometime last year. Maybe a little before that. I just knew to leave it alone. I mean if there's no way to fix it without a reinstall, I'll just suffer with it not being in there as I know it's reacting as if it were active as my gadgets are working, my system boots up fine, everything runs just peachy. I've used programs like CCleaner in the past as well, I don't know if that could be the issue too, I don't have any backups of the registry either. It's a head scratcher for sure though, not seeing it there, yet everything being fine and dandy. Any ideas?

Greetings all, Any help suggestions would be appreciated: After a seemingly failed attempt to execute a simple restore, my T61 (Windows XP) is currently not able to startup properly or launch Rescue and Recovery.  After a few seconds, the screen turns black and the computer begins the startup process again.   When trying to launch R&R via the blue Thinkvantage button, I receive a pop-up message that says "configuring you system," and then the computer reboots after a few seconds.   I can access startup options by pressing F8, but any attempt to return to the last known configurations or launch in safe-mode w/ command prompt crashes, and gives the message that: Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM I am currently on an extended rural vacation and do not have access to any recovery discs.  If anyone can help me with the following, I would be very grateful: 1: Restoring my computer to some working order.  If possible, launching a recovery/restore from a USB device or burned data disc. 2: Access and transfer files off my computer -- I made backups before I left for my trip, but being able to access/use these in the interem would be helpful.   Any suggestions or help would certainly be appreciated.  Also, I'm happy to supply any additional information that may be useful toward this end. Thank you, -Corey

At the first few times it worked after a reboot but now i always get that error.

I tried using the windows cd but i couldn't figure out how to repair something...

could anyone help me with this problem...
or do i have to reinstal windows...?

Answer:Startup error missing \windows\system32\config\system

set the bios to boot from cd first
boot from the windows cd
choose install
ignore the first repair option continue with install
when windows finds the previous installation
then repair
it will leave all of your files intact
if you have sp2 installed you will need a slipstreamed disk with sp2 intergrated into xp or you will not get the repair option
if you need to make a slipstreamed disk use nlite

Last night around 1 or 2 in the morning, I was looking at websites like alluc.org. I searched for "onclickvideo" in google. I found the website that I was looking for and went to it. It was onclickvideos.com. Somewhere between that homepage and one page that I clicked on there, my browser started acting really weird. I was using firefox. Firefox started to crash everytime I re-opened it. Then I got a fake security center result saying that there is a Trojan detected. It gives me this button to click to "fix" the problem. When I click it, it takes me to defender-review.com and that webpage tells me to download the software. This is the only webpage that firefox will open without crashing. I have NOT downloaded that software. While that page was up, I opened a new tab and searched google to see if it was legit, which it was not. Firefox still wasn't acting right, so I did what the people in the forums I found said, which was to go to the AppData folder and go through there seeing what was created around the same time that it first started acting up. I went into safe mode and did this. When I restarted, firefox would not open at all. It tells me that there is already a window of firefox running but that it is not responding and to either close that window or restart. I went to Task Manager, and it doesn't show anything firefox running. This is what Task Manager showed.I tried to get HijackThis, but it said "Your current internet security settings... Read more

Defender Control is a small Portable freeware which will allow you to completely disable Windows Defender in Windows 10 , Windows 8.1 , Windows 8 , Windows 7 , Windows Vista (32 and 64-bit).

Why should you use it:

During copying big data from Pc to Usb or vice versa , disabling Windows Defender can decrease the total copy time
Users may experiencing conflicts between Defender and their antivirus application
Some antivirus programs ask the user to manually turn off or disable Windows Defender in Windows 10
If you?ve got it enabled, chances are Windows Defender will start each time you boot your PC . If you?re short on resources, have your own methods of dealing with spyware or have simply come to the conclusion that Windows Defender is not for you then you might want to disable it.

(Please note that linux is still running fine, so this cant be a hardware problem)

###Today, when I started my laptop, it failed to start. It showed no error, its just that after the windows logo comes, it froze in a black screen with mouse cursor visible.
###I forced restart, and then it gave me the option to repair, because windows was unable to start.
###I chose repair, and the repair program started "detecting problems". Then it gave me the option to either do a system restore or cancel. I chose system restore.
###I let it run for 3 hrs., but it seemed to make no progress, so I forced restart. (It didnt let me cancel also, said that current recovery process cannot be canceled)
###I tried to enter safe mode this time, and was successful. I went to system restore, where it showed me an option to restore to an older point where I hadnt uninstalled a game (Assassin's creed Revelations)
### For some reason, I didnt restore the system. I thought that maybe all this was a temporary problem. So I restarted normally, and tried starting windows the normal way. It failed. After the windows logo comes, there is a black screen with mouse pointer for a few seconds, then it automatically restarts. (this is what happened then, and also happens now)

When accessing the Windows 8 Advanced Startup Options (ASO), I am expecting to see a menu option called Troubleshoot – see screenshot (from Microsoft).

..but when I access this screen on my brand new Windows 8 XPS12, the Troubleshoot menu item is not displayed – see screenshot.

This is contrary to standard Windows 8 functionality.
I would be grateful for any advice on getting access to the Troubleshoot menu of Windows 8 ASO. Thanks!

Hey guys,

I restarted my PC because of a problem with a webpage, and when I tried to log back on my desktop icons were missing and so were my startup options that are normally on the toolbar. Also, some context menus are missing, all I get are "send to drive F, and E, not desktop or anything.

I restarted again, and now my wallpaper is gone, but some startup options seem to be back.

My icons/folders display when I go to C:/Users/<myname>/Desktop, but don't appear in the actual desktop.

There are probably other screwed up things too.

What's going on? Did I pick up a virus or something?

EDIT: "Set as Wallpaper" is broken also 0_O

Thanks,

I am unable to start my computer. I receive the error message: the \windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt. I cannot move forward as F8 wont allow access to the Qosmio Recovery disk that came with my Qosmio F15-AV201 - after I receive the error message, nothing happens. I have Windows XP Media Center Edition.

My concern is that besides receiving the missing file error, my CD drive might be inop, and maybe that's why I cant access what's on the CD or reach the computer's restore options. I'm beginning to think that I'll have to remove my hard drive so that I can copy my files and then move on from there.

I am desperate to get this machine up and running, and will appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks!
Denise

If you are getting this error message first diconnect the printer and network cable. After that disconnect all USB devices.

Then Restart your computer and go to BIOS, set all USB devices to no boot.

You will not get that error messages again.

When I turn on my computer I get the following error message :

Windows could not start because the following gile is missing or corrupt:
windows\system32\config\system
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select rat the first screen to start repair.

I cant fix this problem because I dont quite understand what to do.
First I put in the Toshiba Setup Recover CD and then I turned on the computer.
When the Toshiba screen came on I held down r
Nothing happened and I was returned to the original error message

Second: I tried holding down c when I turned on the computer because that is what the cd said to do
The CD loaded and brought me to a screen that asked me if I had backed up all my files
I dont have them all backed up, only some, because previously there was no problem with the computer and I didnt think I would restart it.
I hit no and so I dont know what to do next.

I cant lose everything on my computer or else I would just re-load windows. What should I do?

Is there anyway for me to backup my documents and then reload everything, or is there a way for me to just repair the system without erasing it?

Thanks for your help
Josh

Answer:Startup error - File is missing or corrupt : windows\system32\config\system

That error means the registry is corrupted.

First you should check the memory, it may be corrupting the data. Did you install aftermarket memory recently? Go to www.memtest.org and boot memtest from a floppy disk or CD.

To recover your data, you can remove the HDD and connect it to another PC using a 2.5" USB Adapter. Then put the HDD back in and run recovery.

To fix it, you can try reverting back to the last known configuration in the Windows Boot menu. Press F8 when Windows just starts to boot to get to the menu.

Problem 1:

When I restart my computer, I get 2 popup windows on my desktop: 1) "Problem starting C\ProgramData\MicrosoftTrayTray.dll" and 2) "C\ProgramData\JavaProfileProfile.dll The specified module could not be found" These 2 popups don't seem to affect anything at all. Windows starts correctly, and I can access and use all my programs. I close these 2 popups and my system seems to run fine. These popups seemed to appear after trying to clean "fakesysdef" using MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware and Combofix last week, prior to posting here.

Prior to these 2 popups I also got 2 other popups at Windows startup which were fixed after cleaning "fakesysdef" with MBAM and Combofix. These were: AppData\Local\AppleComputer\AppleUpdate\AppleUp.DLL Invalid access to memory location" and "GFXUI has stopped working"

After cleaning with MBAM and Combofix is when these 2 new popups appeared - 1) "Problem starting C\ProgramData\MicrosoftTrayTray.dll" and 2) "C\ProgramData\JavaProfileProfile.dll The specified module could not be found". I restored back to when my system was clean and reinstalled Windows updates. But these 2 popups still appear at Windows startup.

I had Windows Defender installed under Win-7.  I did the upgrade to Windows-10 (straightforward).
However, when booting from cold, and after logging in, a message box has always appeared saying:
"
Windows Defender
This app has been turned off and isn't monitoring your computer.
If you're using another app to check for malicious or unwanted software, use Security and Maintenance to check that app's status.
"
I'm not using any other antivirus - just whatever came with Windows-10.  I originally thought that this would be some wrinkle that would get fixed by an update, but it's still there.
I've looked for ways to uninstall Windows Defender, but can't find a way to do it.  Typing "Defender" into the Search bar brings up an option saying "Windows Defender Desktop App", which when clicked also brings up the message box
mentioned above.
Is there any way to get rid of this message box?
Thanks!

Hi. This is my first post and hopefully placed into the correct sub-forum. I am running Windows XP.First and foremost, I have become infected with the Windows System Defender trojan. I have downloaded Malwarebyte Anti-Malware to help clear it off and have also tried to remove it manually. When trying to remove manually the trojan would not let me CTRL-ALT-DEL to kill the processes/.dll's. However this has now lead to a more seriously problem and I get this constant blue screen:I can't even get back into the login screen because I get this blue screen now. Stick with the built in Windows Defender anti virus / malware program or use a 3rd party such as AVAST for Windows 10???

I tried editing the Hosts file in Windows 8, but it wasn't possible. I turned of Windows Defender in Windows 8, and it was possible.
So it looks like Windows Defender in Windows 8 locks the Hosts file and protects in from being hijacked. The Hosts file is situated in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc and to edit it, you will have to turn off the protection and then edit and save the file - and then you can turn it 'on' again.
Good in my opinion! Can anyone corroborate?

Answer:Windows Defender in Windows 8 locks Hosts file and protects it from being hijacked

Right-click on Notepad and selecting Run as Administrator didn't work?

I have been getting these error codes every time i try to update windows
software. I have googled extensively on this problem and followed guides, but
its still giving me error codes. I am NOT using a proxy or anything like
that. This error poped up after I uninstalled kaspersky from my computer I
believe. I am running Vista 32bit SP1 (SP1 because i still havent been able
to update). I have tried using Microsoft's update links, but they are broken
because they just return me to google. Please help someone! I need to get
this fixed before tomorrow because of that new virus.

Answer:Error codes 80244019 (windows Update) and 0x8024402c (windows Defender)

Hello. I am experiencing trouble with my HP Windows 7 64Bit laptop. I noticed some changes back in December but thought it was because I received a new modem/router from ATT. I am always being redirected when I click on a link or have adware pop up. I use Google Chrome and installed an AdBlocker but it doesn't help. Also, I run spybot and CCleaner each week and SuperAntispyware and Uniblue registry booster everyday. When I click on Window Firewall, I get the following message: Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings error code 0x80070424I ran the Fix it tools, but it sent me to an online forum for more help. From there I found out that my Window Defender and Windows Security Essentials were also not working. I was able to install WSE but I am getting the same error code for Window Defender. Windows Security Essentials ran and found some issues and said it needed to restart to clear out the issues. However, during the restart, it tells me that it has encounter a problem and must reboot. On the forum, I read that I am most likely infected with a root kit virus. I have a folder called system64 C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM64 and a file called consrv.dll C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONSRV.DLLI. On another site, they asked for me to run Malwarebytes,OLT,TDSSKiller, and MBRCheck. This programs ran but the WSE popped up and rebooted my computer again, which puts me back to where I started.I went back to the forum and was redirected here. I tried to follow the Preparation Guide but r... Read more

Good evening!

I recently started using my older laptop which has windows 10. I restarted my laptop after normal use and it started doing automatic repair. Windows defender check up starts running every single time. Sometimes it finished and sometimes it doesn't. Every time after the completed or failed check up, the laptop restarts and does it again (~15 times now).

- Windows 8.1 installation disk has been inside the machine for last three hours (~5 restarts)
- USB-stick with windows 10 installation media made with rufus has been plugged for almost the same duration.

DVD-drive starts up during restart, but the installation doesn't start
Laptop doesn't react USB boot device. (Device works since I've tested it on this PC and used same device on this PC).

I've installed windows to various PC's several times including the laptop in this case, so I have knowledge of the basic installation procedures. The laptop doesn't react to boot devices and BIOS can't be accessed via hotkeys during boot.

I've been browsing forums and web pages for last three hours and haven't found any working solution.

Any advice or stuff I should try?

Answer:Windows 10 stuck, in windows defender check at boot (infinite loop)

villevanille,

Welcome to Ten Forums!

These may be factors:
Windows 8.1 installation disk has been inside the machine for last three hours (~5 restarts)
Aren't you trying to work with Windows 10? Why would you have an W8.1 installation CD in the drive?

USB-stick with windows 10 installation media made with rufus has been plugged for almost the same duration.
(Rufus is not considered a very reliable way to prepare a USB flash drive that will boot.)

You also need to select the drive from which to boot in the Boot Order section of the BIOS.

To engage in the process again , you may want to consider the following:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Use Option 6, and save your files/settings.

Microsoft has equipped the new Windows 8 operating system with an upgraded version of Windows Defender, a full-featured security product that inherits many of the features previously available in Security Essentials.

The application comes pre-installed on all Windows 8 versions and cannot be uninstalled, but the app is automatically disabled once the user deploys another security software.

And even though it?s supposed to help protect a Windows 8 workstation, Mark Austin, chief technology officer of Windows security software firm Avecto, told IT Pro that Windows Defender might actually give users a false sense of security.

?Although [it] is a positive step in some respects, it has the danger of giving organisations a false sense of security, as it shouldn?t be relied upon to protect against malware threats,? he said. ?The nature of malware attacks has changed and more sophisticated security technology and proactive measures are required to protect against these threats.?

Basically, the security researcher claims that users are recommended to install their very own security product, as integrated software may be unable to cope with certain attacks.

?It is important to always take a defence-in-depth strategy to security, and to not rely solely on the built-in features of the operating system,? Austin continued.

Aryeh Goretsky, researcher at antivirus software firm ESET, said in October that Windows Defender might actually be disabled on plenty of ne... Read more
