Slow boot problem on Dell optiplex i7 3770

Question: Slow boot problem on Dell optiplex i7 3770

i am having a weird problem, i have a desktop pc which is dell optiplex 9010 with i7 3770 and single 4gb ram slot and hitachi 7200rpm hdd. The problem is that my desktop pc takes minutes to boot. I have tried to boot the same windows from the same hardisk on my laptop and it booted in 5 seconds but my desktop pc takes alot of time to come to the log on screen. I have tried ready boost, fast startup on/off but nothing worked.
Is it happening due to hardware issue or something with the windows?
Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Slow boot problem on Dell optiplex i7 3770

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys, i'm newbie in dell community.
I have a problem with optiplex 745. I replace power supply, and now PC can't boot. When push the start button PC beep twice (1-1 code), lights on 1,2,3. I will make a video and will share in comment.

Answer:Dell optiplex 745 boot problem.

Can you confirm the Beep Code? It should be in a sequence of 3, like 1 beep 1 beep 3 beeps or 2 beeps, 3 beeps, 1 beep etc... Also when the system is showing 1-2-3 lit up does anything show up on the computer screen? Typically on 1-2-3 there might be some error message displayed. If you're certain on the beeps, and no issues are displaying on the monitor, I would then try to boot up with minimal things plugged in, only keyboard and maybe 1 stick of memory just to see what it does. Lastly make sure you have plugged in everything to the motherboard.I hope this helps, but let me know if you discover anything else.Best regards,Brad

Hi,

I'm having an issue completing a XP installation on a Dell Optiplex GX150 machine where it doesn't past the DELL log screen.

When I start up the computer with the XP disk in it, I can get into the setup menu to install XP.

Then, when it completes the installation and reboots the computer, it goes to the Dell Logo screen and I notice the monitor flickers 2 times and then the screen stays black. (blank)

It doesn't even go into the Windows screen to complete the installation process.

Would anyone know why this happens?

thanks

Try the install with one stick of ram at first.

If you added a video card, try it with the on board first, but the supply is suspect.

Hi

I have been using my machine (winXP Media Center) fine since I purchased it but I went to boot the pc this morning and it will not boot windows. All that happens is the dell screen loads (the white bar fills up) then all that appears is a black screen with a cursor blinking in the top left corner?? How can I fix this?

I have looked all over the net but cannot find the answer, thanks!

A month after the 3 year warranty expired, my Dell Optiplex 780 PC started to fail to reboot after 'Restart'. This happens on every 'Restart'. I wait for several hours and try to restart. In 3 times out of 10, it will reboot and let me continue with my Windows 7 software. The need for wait time implies that there is a cooling problem. I can't see where. All the fans work!I thought it may be a BIOS problem. So I updated the BIOS from 0780-A03 to 0780-A14. Problem continues.Dell diagnostics "ALL', i.e., hardware and software show no problems.Since it does not always boot up, pressing F2, F8 and F12 on start up gets me nowhere. What else should I do?

Answer:Dell optiplex 780 boot problem (does not always boot)

Could be the power supply is failing (did you blow the dust out of it?) or could be an overheating issue. Did you remove the heatsink from the CPU to clean it? If you did, did you reapply fresh thermal paste & do it correctly? Have you checked the CPU temp either in the BIOS or by using hardware monitoring software? You can't rule out overheating if you have no idea what the temp is.http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmo...http://www.dell.com/ee/business/p/o...

Answer:Boot problem, Dell Optiplex-390 boot

The pattern you show is not listed.  Sounds like its crashing after post.
Disconnect the data cable from hard drive, turn off,  then restart.
The error should change.  If it does not the whole thing is DEAD.
Bad Ram, Shorted USB.  This is a conspiracy against you personally.

Hi guys,
I have a lab with 40 Dell OptiPlex 9030 AIO (touchscreen) desktops.  These computers all have up to date BIOS firmware.  They are running in UEFI mode with a well tested Windows 10 image, as are all of our labs.
The problem that I am running into is that these computers randomly, upon reboot, will enter the one-time boot menu screen instead of booting into Windows.
If I reboot the entire room, 2-6 random computers will enter into the one-time boot menu.  At that point I can either reboot the computer, or choose the Windows partition to enter enter into Windows.  The lab with this particular model of AIO is the only lab that is affected.  The computers that behave like this could be any of the 40 in the room, and the problem does not consistently happen.  It seems totally random.  When affected, the computer will reboot to the Dell logo screen, then the yellow Preparing One Time Boot Menu text will appear and they'll get stuck here.
I have not been able to dig up any potential causes to this problem.  I've thoroughly looked through the BIOS options, and I cannot see any settings that could be causing this to randomly happen.
This is a really strange problem that I have not encountered previously.  Any insight that you guys have would be really appreciated.  Please let me know if additional information would be helpful, I would be happy to provide it.  Thank you!

Answer:Slow Installation of XP on DELL Optiplex GX 110

First reseat the RAM and make sure the hard drive and all cards and cables are plugged in correctly. The when starting the machine press F2 when you see the Dell logo. Press down the NumLock, Caps Lock, etc. so all 3 keyboard lights are lit up. Then hold down the Ctl+Alt+E key until you hear a series of beeps and release. Restart the machine by pressing escape. Now test the RAM with the free downloadable diagnostics at www.memtest86.comIs that the RAM that has been in the machine for a while? Now test the hard drive with the free diagnostics from the appropriate drive maker's site. How is the drive jumpered? Has this drive been in the machine for some time or is this a new addition? Has the macine EVER worked normally? WHat happened between then and now?24 hours to load Windows is definitely NOT normal.

Normal install (32-bit)
Standard GX520, no addon cards.
I haven't installed any new drivers/apps. I literally just clean installed the RC (build 7100) over a copy of XP Pro (the usual windows dual boot menu at start) and XP is still fine but when I log into win 7 it's slow as can be. incredibly slow is how I would describe it. Anyway the weird thing is the CPU usage and memory usage are low so I can't figure it out. maybe it's disk usage but I can't even run any portable diagnostic software because it's so damn slow. Is there anything I can check. it must be something simple. And I'm sure somebody else has tried it on a GX520 business machine. Any help is much appreciated.

It is a pentium 4.. perhaps you should just stick with XP.

Hello, I'm Clay or QuickLoad. Signed up seconds ago because I was unable to successfully diagnose and troubleshoot a problem by myself. I bought this 620 back long ago, it was created January something 2005, anyways at the time the gtx 520 was the stuff. I haven't installed that til about a year ago. About two weeks ago I installed two corsair valueselect 4gb sticks, no problems with either.
It wasn't til about a week and a half ago that I opened up my heat sink and processor socket and finally took out the i3, replacing it with an i7 3770, pea thermal paste, and locking it back down. The monitor has no signal, usbs have no power(for example, mic light doesn't turn on). I also believe I hear two beeps when it turns on, orange led inside works, all fans work, power button is white, power plug light is green. It also works fine when I reinstall the i3.
I came here seeking for assistance, here's a list of things I've tried:
Resetting CMOS about 4 times over the course.
Updating bios from A04 to A10(thunderbolt II), which was last updated 2013.
Reseating, swapping all of my ram cards, stock and corsair one, together and individually.
Reseating nvidia 520.
Monitor cable with stock video card.
Draining power and then restarting it.
Probably some more but I am willing to do anything suggested even if it takes a couple repeats.
Any help is greatly appreciated, any questions are welcome. :)

Answer:Dell Inspiron 620 - no monitor or usbs with i7 3770

Unfortunately, none of the i7 were validated by Dell in the 2011 Inspiron 620 desktop so we cannot know if the issue is due to a bios or motherboard limitation. The best CPU validated was the MHF7R Sandybridge i5-2400 3.10GHz.

This is a Dell Optiplex GX240 desk top. It is mainly used for downloading music and movies, it has become very slow and sometimes locks up, when this happens, I open task manager and I see the cpu useage is at 100%. Looking for a way to clean it up and get some speed back or at least stop freezing up. It also takes a while for it to boot up, if it is shut down.

I just installed Windows 7 RC Build 7100 32-bit version on 2 brand new right out of the box Dell Optiplex 960. This was a fresh install not an upgrade. The setup ran just fine. Windows boots up and runs but is sluggish and sometimes I have to wait for things to open. Such as running solitaire it is slow to deal the cards and even stops briefly.

I also tried the 64-bit version but receive an error during the boot from DVD. Status 0xC00000e9. Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred.

The cpu and memory usage are not high at all. I have also noticed that the time on the taskbar is running very slow. It takes about 45-50 seconds for one second of time to pass.

I am wondering if maybe there is a driver issue with the machines. I have installed the Windows 7 video driver from the ATI site. I am not sure where to find a chipset driver for this computer. There are no red X's or other problems in the device manager.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Slow Taskbar Clock on Dell Optiplex 960

I'm having a similar issue on my current rig. Standard procedure seems to be first trying to replace the CMOS battery. It didn't work for me, but it's any easy issue to check. Above and beyond that I am personally planning on just tossing it up to a conflict MS has yet to resolve with specific hardware/BIOS settings.

Oh, and I am able to install both 32 and 64bit versions, although both are running slowly (clock and tasks), but I am unable to install Vista as it crashes during install. We possibly have the similar root issues. Install build 7600 gave me drastic improvements, although still slow, over other builds.

Oh btw, if you toss you system specs into the frame in the User CP you won't have to type it out each time

Hi
I have  dell optiplex 780 which has worked well but now suddenly wont boot.  On pressing the boot button the fan can be heard to come on really strongly but no screen activity, no evidence of booting. The fan runs for about 30 secs and then shuts down  and after a delay of about 10 secs then the fan starts up again . This start - stop of the fan just continues.
Even with disconnecting and reconnecting power it still occurs.

Can anyone help me

Just purchased a refurbished Dell Optiplex 760. Worked great with no problems for first month.  Was in the middle of using it when I received an error message "your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart, we're just collecting some error info and then we'll restart for you."  Stop Code: system service exception. What failed: fileinfo.sys
After it restarted and tried to reboot it is now stuck in a loop where it gets to the Dell losing screen for about 5 seconds and then goes back and tries to boot again.

Answer:Dell optiplex 760 won't boot

Press F12 a few times immediately after powerup to get to the Dell diagnostics.  Run an extended test on the hard drive -- which will likely show a fail.

Hi,

I have Dell Optiplex 755, which does not boot into System Setup or BIOS. I was able to use it yesterday and it was working fine until it shuts down itself with 4 long beeps. I unplugged the power supply and boot the machine but nothing happens. The 4 long beeps were gone, it does not boot into system setup or BIOS. I have decided to buy a new hard disk as I suspected it was the problem. I managed to install the new 500GB disk but still, it does nothing. I also tried to remove the cable attached to hard disk and reinstall the disk but to no avail.

Please help.

Answer:Dell OptiPlex 755 does not boot.

Four beeps is a RAM failure - unplug the system, hold the power button and remove and reinstall the memory modules.  Try again - if you get the same no-boot, try one module at a time in each socket until you isolate the bad module (replace that) or bad socket (in which case, replace the mainboard).

Hi I have a Dell Optiplex GX620 running Windows 7. Every time I turn it on it goes into a loop restarting by it's self when you go into start up repair it does fix it, but every time it is shut down the problem starts all over again.

Answer:Dell Optiplex GX 620 Boot Loop

Try running a chkdsk on your Win7 partition. Computer>right-click C: drive and select Properties>Tools>Error Checking>Check Now button>Tick both boxes and Start button. It will schedule for next reboot. When you reboot let it run and see if it starts without problems.

Also go into Disk Management (just type disk management in the Start/Search box) and see if you have a System Reserved partition (about 100mb). If the chkdsk on C: doesn't work maybe doing one on the System Reserved partition (if it exists) might be worth a try.

Answer:dell optiplex 280 wont boot

There's no such Optiplex model. It's either GX280 or SX280Go here to find your Service tag number, tell us what it is:http://support.dell.com/support/top..."cannot boot on dell- system password keyboard wont work"Are those 3 separate problems ?What do you mean by cannot boot ?Is there no response at all from the computer ?Do you see normal video while booting but the operating system won't load normally ?If you DO get video while booting, if the keyboard won't work, use a different keyboard. The password for what ? For a Windows user, or for the computer itself (a password set in the bios Setup - a system access password you must supply it to use the computer at all), or a hard drive access password (you must supply it to use the hard drive).?If it's a system access password, when the AC power has been disconnected to it, remove the Cmos battery from the mboard for a short time , install it again with the + on it showing when it's installed. Boot the computer - you will get a "Cmos Checksum Error" or similar message - go into the bios Setup and set the date and time, Save bios settings to get rid of that message while booting.

I tried to decode the series of beep codes using dells chart, http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN143065/EN but can figure it out.

I made a recording, if anyone can figure out what this beep sequence is, I would appreciate the insight, I can't make it out. TIA- Kevin

Answer:Beeping Dell Optiplex at Boot

Those beeps are confusing. First, I need you to take off the side panel and inspect any boards with capacitors that look like any of these. (video also explains how those capacitor failures happen). If you see any, you need to replace your motherboard or solder some new ones on. If you don't see any, take the button cell battery out of the computer with the PC unplugged and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. If none of that works, I suggest it is a RAM or motherboard problem of some sort.

I was learning how to use Microsoft WDS to PXE boot a computer over UEFI instead of BIOS.  I got a working system using a Dell PowerEdge r710 and a retail Intel Server Adapter i350-T2.
I then tried to see if I can get any one of our various Dell OptiPlex's to PXE boot over UEFI too but they don't seem to allow their NIC to be visible, just visible in legacy BIOS.  We have OptiPlex 745, 755, 760, 790 and 990's.  The Intel NIC's in the 790 and 990 should definitely be able to allow PXE via UEFI with a firmware update with UEFI+PXE flag set.
Are there plans to enable PXE in UEFI in any of the newish Dell OptiPlex PC's at least?

Answer:PXE Boot over UEFI not supported on any Dell OptiPlex?

Wanted to edit my own post but I guess I can't.  745's and 755's don't have UEFI "BIOS'" in them.

Hello
I am trying to re-configure a Dell 780 MT.
Strategy: The changes include memory up from 4 GB to 16 GB, and 512 GB SSD backed by a 1 TB HDD.   I would like to install Win XP Pro (64 bit initially) because I have 4 large legacy programs that run under XP, and will never be upgraded because their originators are now deceased.
Later I would like to install Win 7, and try the XP compatibility mode, but the first priorityis to get the machine running under Win XP.
I do not want to go down the route of virtual machines, due to external (non Dell) hardware compatibility e.g. the machine can be connected to a microscope or to a large data acquisition system whose performance in VM environments is unstable.
When I have the OS installed I also need to upgrade the graphics - nVidia K220 and a large flat panel screen for the CAD modelling.
Problem:  In order to work on the bare metal machine (before the OS is installed) I would like to be able to run Win PE 3, generated from the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK), and build the PE image with a set of tools, e.g. Acronis Disk Director and many others.
Summary of Investigation to Date:  The PE environment needs a bootable USB stick to run from.  However, I cannot get the PE environment to boot on the 780.  The stick is prepared following scrupulously the walk through in the WAIK documentation.  I have checked the USB  for functionality (actually I have used 4 different USB's in the time I ... "Alert! Previous attempts at booting this system have failed at checkpoint [Ithr]. For help in resolving this problem, please note this checkpoint and contact Dell Technical Support."

Sometimes when you start it the CPU fan sounds like its going way too fast, Ive read this is because the PC hasn't booted enough to control the fan speed yet.

Ive also read that this model of PC has been plagued with problems regarding expanding or leaking capacitors and when I looked at the mobo with a flashlight, sure enough there is 1 capacitor behind the cpu that looks exactly like what a leaking capacitor looks like in the photos Ive seen on the net. But, the photos I have seen of PCs that have failed due to this problem always seem to have about 6 or more failed capacitors that are bloated and leaking.

And I just find it hard to believe that an ebay top seller pc store with 100% positive feedback would ship me a pc without turning it on first so I have a slim hope that it may be something else. Ive tried running it with no drives attached and also with 1 ram stick instead of the 2 it came with (tried them both one at a time) still same thing. And I removed the little battery for 10 minutes to reset the bios, no change.

There are 4 error lights on the back of the PC that are supposed to give you a code to help figure out whats wrong, problem is the ... Read more

However, I think you have purchased a bad machine... I would file a dispute with ebay and pay pal..... perhaps even contact your credit card company.....

Today I came in to use my PC and it will not boot into Windows. It started out as "initializing intel boot agent PXE" error, after following other articles, I got that to go away, I switched from NIC ON w/PXE to ON only. That made the PXE error go away however I am still not able to boot to Windows, I get a flashing cursor on the upper left of the screen and nothing more. I did a factory reset of the BIOS and still nothing. Any other ideas? Also is there an offline way of updating the BIOS if I cannot get into Windows to install the program? Most BIOS updates I have done are an exe that you download, extract t USB and then run on boot.....

Answer:Dell Optiplex 755 won't load thru BIOS to boot

What color is the power button and is it steady or blinking? Check the 4 diagnostic LEDs on the front panel and look up the error codes in the manual which may point you at the problem. Are there any beeps from the PC?
Look in BIOS setup to see if your boot hard drive is correctly recognized on the SATA0 port.  Then make sure the hard drive is first in the boot sequence.
If the drive isn't recognized in BIOS setup, power off, unplug and press/hold power button for ~15 sec. Open the case and carefully reseat the SATA cable between the hard drive and motherboard at both ends. Also check that the power cable is correctly attached to the drive. Close the case and try to boot now.
If it doesn't boot and the hard drive still isn't recognized in BIOS setup, then you may have had a  hard drive failure.  See if you can boot from a bootable CD, DVD or USB stick...

All of the sudden my computer took twice as long to start up and my sound skips and is stretched.. everything is very slow, my mouse skips as well, and before no matter what I was doing, no matter what I was downloading or playing games, my mouse never freezes...

I had the free Norton that comes with comcast, and after (the sluggishness) I downloaded malwarebytes and got AVG internet security 2011. And they did clean some viruses out. But it still runs slow, I updated all of my drivers.. I deleted almost all of my programs. The only antivirus I have running is AVG and AVG PC tuneup which tuned up and fixed 4,884 problems. But STILL NO FIX. Plus I re-installed all of my codecs and divx and everything possible, updated my drivers with two different driver updaters..

Its either the drivers, could be codecs, or something happened to my power supply.

look at this info on my computer and tell me if something is wrong..

I work for a University and we have exclusively Dell computers.
I recently received a newer Optiplex 9010 from IT. However, when you initially power it up, it enters post, displays the DELL circle logo, and stops. I have to hold down the POWER button on the front until it goes off. At this point it comes back on for a second or two, and then shuts off again.
After this, I press the POWER button on the front again and it then will exit Post and start Windows.
it usually does this, but sometimes it exits Post and goes right into windows.
I have disabled WAKE ON USB, WAKE ON LAN, etc.
Anyone have a solution?

Thank You.

Answer:Dell Optiplex 9010 Boot, Post Issues

Probably best to let your IT dept troubleshoot this for you...
Is the boot hard drive first in the boot sequence?
Is USB Boot Support enabled or disabled in BIOS?
Watch the power button when it starts to boot and fails. Do you see an amber colored blink code? The blink code pattern is 2 or 3 blinks followed by a short pause then X number of blinks up to 7.
Don't think you really want to disable Wake on USB because you won't be able to wake the system from sleep with your mouse or keyboard.

Hi
I am wondering if anyone can help me. I am in Uganda where I work as a volunteer and I am helping someone with their computer that was donated to them. It is an old Dell Optiplex GX100.

When we turn it on it says " No boot device available - strike F1 to rety boot, F2 for setup utility."

I can get into BIOS and for all the Primary and Secondary drives it just says "off".

There are not computer support services availalble nearby because we are in the middle of Uganda and there are no installation/boot disks available (although I could possibly download through email if needed)

Anyone able to give help from a distance?

Thanks

This is a recent model Optiplex 7010 running 32bit. Got a 64bit disc I want to install but can't even get to the boot menu. The Dell manual says to press F12 when the Dell logo appears on the screen after a restart. Tried that a dozen times but it still goes to Windows. Any way to access the boot menu from Windows?

Answer:How do I get to the boot menu on Dell Optiplex to install 64bit W7?

Pressing Delete is another option, or on some its F8, but push it too late and it will take you to safe mode.

Theres no way to access it from windows. but as default your DVD drive should be the primary boot order, so simply booting with the disc in will take you too the windows installation process

Hi,
I am trying to create a windows 7 image to the new PC's that we have just purchased. On boot after pxe network boot I get the message "Please add the network driver to the windows PE image on Windows Deployment Services." I have added many drivers to WDS with no luck and the correct one from the dell website errors and will not let me added it. I have the packaged the drivers into the install.wim and boot.wim using the AIK but still no luck. The drivers from the dell website do not seem to work in the PE environment. I'm hoping that someone has done this before and can point me to the correct driver. I have been looking for the best part of two weeks and i'm sure it can't be this hard.
Thanks in advance!

I'm trying to use the Dell Command | Configure version 3.1 to set PXE boot options on various Optiplex WS.  I am currently working with an old Optiplex 745 with the latest BIOS (2.6.4).  I can set the Admin password and the bootorder but when I try to use the following:
cctk --wakeonlan=lanwithpxeboot
I get the error "The option 'wakeonlan' is not available or cannot be configured through this tool."
Is this model too old to work with the Command | Configure software?  If I go back to the CCTK 2.2.1, will that work or are the two tools basically the same but just rebranded?
Is there any way to tell which cctk options will work on which Dell Optiplex and Precision WS?
Thanks,
Dan

Hi !
I was given a Dell Optiplex GX620 SFF by a friend that was working ok, but...
I tried to install a PCI-e VGA card with HDMI with negative results.
After removing the expansion card, results were as follows:
Upon powering on the machine screen signal led turns instantly green (as if it gets some kind of signal),
but then returns to orange = no signal.
I unplugged the HDD and left only one memory stick on the board.
A series of beeps (3 followed by 2 was what i could identify) and then looked at the diagnostic lights.
Diagnostic lights 3,4 remained on with one ram stick of 512Mb Kingston @ 533 MHz
Diagnostic lights 3,4 remained on with one ram stick of 1Gb Kingston @ 667 MHz
Diagnostic lights 1,2,3 remained on with one ram stick of 512 Mb Transcend 512 @ 800 MHz
Diagnostic lights 1,2,3 remained on with one ram stick of 1Gb Supertalent @ 800 MHz
In the meantime i reset the bios following this procedure
www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln284985/how-to-perform-a-bios-or-cmos-reset-and-or-clear-the-nvram-on-your-dell-system?lang=en
which did not solve the issue.
CPU = P4 630/2M/800,
I can not tell which bios version the machine has.
Any possible ideas would be appreciated

So had to go into the Bios look for Floppy drive and disable or remove it.
Worked fine after that.It might not be your problem but worth a look if you are bored.

Answer:Dell Optiplex GX620 Can't boot To windows 10 From USB Screen freezes

GX620 won't  F12 Boot or work with windows 10 USB.  You have to use 32 bit only DVD and only after the region is set and the firmware is upgraded on the DVD drive.  64 bit windows 10 requires BIOS A11 and Pentium D 900 series from 915 to 960.  No point in doing this however since you can never use more than 3.5 gigs of ram.  2 Gigs is required minimum installed ram.

I started noticing about a week ago that my Optiplex 7010, when rebooted from the OS (Windows 10 Pro x64), will not complete the post process and gets stuck at the big Dell logo.  The only resolution is to power cycle it.
Today I ran the complete diag tool on it and it reported no issues.  I did notice that there was a Bios update available and downloaded it in attempts to upgrade the Bios.  However, when the Bios installer reboots the machine, the same thing happens and the installation doesn't proceed.
The only peripherals attached are the VGA monitor, a USB keyboard and mouse, and the speaker cable.  What else can I do to figure out what's causing the system to hang at the Dell logo?
PS.  I did notice however that when I enter the Bios and make a change that causes the system to reboot, that reboot is successful.  So it's almost as if the only reboots not succeeding are ones stemming from the OS.

Answer:Problem with a Dell OptiPlex.

You could try reflashing your BIOS. Dell uses Pheonix for the most part I think, so this might help out:

http://www.ehow.com/how_5218098_recover-phoenix-bios.html

Failing that, you could try removing non-essential peripherals, and maybe give the 'ol RAM dance a try. Probably not likely it'll solve the problem, but worth a shot anyway. May be a shot mobo though....

Hi,
I recently purchased a Dell Optiplex 5040 Small Form Factor. It has the Windows 10 creators update. I ran Windows Update on it, then ran the Dell Command Update to download and install any recommended updates. After doing this, the computer failed to boot completely when I restart it. The computer would attempt an automatic repair, then fail. The only thing I could do to get past it was to reset the computer (reinstall Windows) entirely. I didn't pay attention to any of the Dell updates that were being installed, but the second time, I didn't install them and the computer seems to boot just fine.
Any ideas? Is there a bad Dell update?
I've checked this list, and the Optiplex 5040 appears to have been test with the Windows 10 creators update: www.dell.com/.../computers-tested-for-upgrade-to-windows-10-creators-update

For some reason, it will not work with my other 1GB of RAM.

I have a Dell Optiplex 330 with the following specs:
Intel Core Pentium Dual core 2GHZ
1gb 800mhz ram
250gb HDD
I have got this computer for free from my uncle because his work wasnt already using it for over 1 year. However, i sense there is something wrong with it. When i boot the computer on, it shows the windows 7 logo. But the boot animation stops and the computer reboots. When i press f12 for the setup/bootmenu, i hear a short beeping noise before going into the bios. In the bios, when i press the keys on the keyboard to go down on the list, it skips a few things. This was also the case in the setup. When i hold the down or up key in the bios, it freezes and i have to reboot the computer. I have already ran the diagnostics, and it showed no problems with the computer. I have replaced the battery in the motherboard, but when i press "load default" in the bios i just hear a long beep and nothing happens further. I keep having this problem over and over again. I just dont know what to do further. How can i fix these problems?

Just reformated a Dell Optiplex 320.Now I thought that I would be smart and reformat it without an Internet connection.I thought if I did it that way there would be less chance of picking up any Virus's when complete. But unfortunately I can get no Internet connection from it so cannot download any drivers needed. The question is would I be quicker reformating it again with the internet connected or searching for someway to download drivers for it.some of the other ones without drivers are.PCI Device.SM Bus Controller.Universal serial bus usb controller Video controller.I have an ethernet modem connection with V/Media but it cannot find or connect to it.Would another reformat with internet connection fix it or do I have to look elsewhere.

Answer:Dell Optiplex 320 reformat problem.

Re-formatting wipes the hard drive clean , with or without an internet connection , unless the OS you are loading has the correct drivers for the ethernet port you will get nothing . Download the appropriate drivers for the ethernet port onto a USB key and load them from there , then you will have internet access . Ashley

Hi guys. I have a weird problem going on at work that I'm trying to figure out and I'm not sure what's happening.

So I got a call from a user on Monday saying that when they're working on their computer the screen would just go black, but after they move their mouse and press any keys on the keyboard everything is ok again. The problem is this happens very often. So I went to see what's going and set screen saver and hibernation settings to never, restarted, etc... Shortly after I got a call from the same user saying that there's still a problem. I went back again and found that the changes that I made and verified were back to what it was before.

Then, ever since monday I had several users report this problem. All of them use Optiplex 755, but it we have many users with 755 that didn't report a problem and seem to be ok. I'm stumped. I was going to turn off hibernation in BIOS, but that's just a temporary solution. Re-imaging is not a possibility. Any ideas?

It freezes up periodically forcing to turn the power off and back on.

Once, Windows logged off and shut down the computer without doing anything.

Programs are running slow.

He has uninstalled his virus scan, installed spyware programs that came back clean, and turned off some other programs and still has these problems. Anyone seen anything like this and know how to fix it.

A acquired a used three year old Dell Optiplex 980 from a friend who switched to newer equipment this year.
I took it home...connected the system, pressed the start button on the tower and the "on" button on my flat screen monitor. The keyboard, monitor, and mouse lights are on.

Very soon the colorful swirling Windows icon is slowly spinning center screen with the typical message that reads "WINDOWS IS STARTING UP".
The four swirling icon colors come together and stop center screen......pause for a moment.......I then notice an almost un-noticable single "blip" of the icon.....Then the icon and "Windows is starting up" text suddenly disappear........and nothing............but a blank screen.
The screen acts like it is booting up Windows....tells me that Windows is starting.....a single faint blip and it's gone.....and a blank screen.

The Optiplex 980 is a 2 quad core, 2.33 ghz, 1600 GB hard drive, 4 GB of Ram and has Windows 7 on the system.

I don't know if this makes any difference or not, but one thing I noticed different between this newer Dell 980 system and my old was in the way the tower connected to my flat screen monitor.
The Dell 980 has a DVI-Input that does not look exactly like the DVI-input on my old tower. My old DVI connector had an 18 pin connector that consisted of two seperate groups of 9 pins stacked three wide three high and with a flat horizontal pin off to the side.  I'd do a repair.  You can boot from a Windows 7 install disc or a repair disc to do the repair.  If you don't have either, you can go to another Windows 7 computer having 32 or 64 bit matching yours and make one.  To do that click Start -> Control Panel -> Backup and Restore -> Create system repair disc.  Insert a CD-R and it'll make it.  Then boot from it on your computer and do the repair.

Good luck.

I'm stumped. My customer told me that she had done something to the sound in her parent's computer and couldn't get it back on. She's a database programmer, so the possibilities are endless. The system has a TurtleBeach A3d card in it, and play the first second of a wave then choke on it. I updated the drivers and the BIOS with no avail. So I put in an Esoniq ES1373 card in. It sounded like an alarm bell whenever a wave was played, and occasionally make screaching sounds. Then I tried MY Audigy card (weeps) and it acted just like the A3d card. Now it is apparently deceased (moans) as my computer no longer recongizes its presence. So my question is, is this a problem with the system as I'm currently assuming or is there something going on in Win2k I'm not seeing.

This computer is running nice, cool and totally silent on a 2.80 ghz and 1 gb of ram it's fast and reliable,
but lately it blacks out,
and turn itself off suddently!
But only while I'm burning stuff on my Sony DRU 510A external USB DVD R-RW.
I'm useing Nero 6 Ultra (totally updated).
I've uninstalled Nero and reinstalled it, but this problem is still,
I've tried different media,
I've checked the mobo for bulbing capacitors,
and found none.
I tested this drive on 2 fast 2+ghz laptops of mine,
and my old Dell Dimention 800t test Rig,
I've burned large files up to 4.5gb on Sony DVD media without any issue.
On the Dell GX270 before burning I did disable background running app's the like of virous scanner, firewall ad aware etc etc, and still no luck.
What's puzzling is that this PC was burning well and without any problems,
just 1 month ago it started foultering gradually,
up to the point that I don't trust it enymore.
I'll pay a billion thanks to anyone that can help on this issue.

Answer:Burning problem with my beloved Dell Optiplex GX270 (XP PRO)

The only thing that raises an eyebrow for me is the "totally silent" part you mention. Unexpected shutdowns are usually heat related. The funny thing is that burning is not CPU intensive.

Try downloading and running a 'burn-in' program to really tax the CPU. You might also try MEMTEST.

I decided to upgrade my computer from a Dell Optiplex 745 to a dell Optiplex 755. I took the hard drive out of the dell optiplex 745 and installed on the Dell Optiplex 755. When I powered on the Dell Optiplex 755, it boot into BSOD. I decided to do a repair installation. The repair installation error occurred while trying to install components. I have uploaded an image to give you better explanation of the error message.

Happened during Xp Repair installation
ERROR MESSAGE: The exception unknown software exception (Oxc0000409) occurred in the application at location 0x6976ea96

Answer:"NEED HELP" Problem with Windows XP setup repair on Dell Optiplex 755

You have changed the hard drive from one system to another...that's not supposed to be done, since the drivers/settings and Windows license for System A...do not necessarily relate at all to System B.

I was planning on buying either a Dell Optiplex 780 SFF or an Dell Optiplex 980 SFF but I would like to know which one will work with Windows XP 64 Bit.

Answer:Will Windows XP 64 Bit work on a Dell Optiplex 780 SFF or Optiplex 980 SFF?

For Windows XP 64 Bit its best to use the somewhat hidden (old ftp website):
http://ftp.dell.com/Browse_For_Drivers/Desktops/Optiplex/OptiPlex%20780/
http://ftp.dell.com/Browse_For_Drivers/Desktops/Optiplex/OptiPlex%20790/
http://ftp.dell.com/Browse_For_Drivers/Desktops/Optiplex/OptiPlex%20980/
This has the old drivers listed of multiple versions including the XP x64 drivers not mentioned on Drivers and Downloads. The new ftp website is slightly broken at present.

I've had an intermittent problem with a Dell Optiplex GX280 P4 3.2GHZ.

Was able to install both WinXP and Ubuntu 8.10, however after updates Ubuntu crashed and would not reload. WinXP intermittently got the blue screen of death.
Ubuntu would not reinstall.
Ran Memtest, and the RAM appears to be ok.
Replaced the Hard Drive, same problems, Ubuntu still refused to install.
The computer shop said it was probably the mobo or the processor (duh)
I won an Acer Veriton 2800 in a scholarship and surprise, surprise, it has a compatible P4 3.2GHZ processor, so I might switch the processors and see what happens, if it's still buggered, I'll assume the mobo is at fault. -I don't get the Acer till next week.
If that is the case, I'll probably buy a new motherboard and rebuild the comp into an ATX case I have lying around.
Will update the processor at a later stage

Any ideas on diagnosis? Anything I might have missed, or not thought to check? Cheers

Answer:Diagnosing a problem; mobo or processor on a Dell Optiplex GX280

Hi,

If Windows XP is throwing off a BSoD then what error is it reporting? I haven't done this in awhile but I recall you need to go into the setting and make it so that upon BSoD the PC doesn't restart until you say to so you can see the error. Also, check the dump files. You'll need to Google the rest of that.

Good Luck,

Adrian

Hallo!

As a total DELL-Lover I only have such Machines around.
I just wanted to build up a OP 760 for my little son.

When I plug the power cort, the diagnostic LEDs 2 3 4 keep flashing while the power LED is amber.
System has only orgiginal DELL components, no add-on cards.

I checked out two CPU types:
intel E8600 and E7300

Also, I tried without any CPU - then, the diagnostic lights for a missing CPU light up.

I would be so perfect if there would be any solution for this.

Anyone knows how to fix that?

I have a Dell OptiPlex GX280 mini-tower (smallest one thereis), and the original 160W power supply died a few months ago without warning. I ordered a new power supply, but accidentally ordered the wrong size (210W for one of the larger towers). I used it in the meantime until I could get the proper size (although the 210W supply wouldn’t fit in the mini case – I left it out of the case and ran the wires through the power plug hole). The computer booted up just fine with this 210W power supply. I finally got around to ordering the 160W smaller correct size, but that power supply would not boot up the computer (just got an amber flashing light). Thinking it was just faulty, I sent it back and requested a replacement. The replacement did not work either. I ordered a third replacement, and the third did not work either! So now I am back to using the 210W power supply (No. HP-U2106F3) which does not fit in the computer housing. I know these Dell OptiPlex machines are notorious for having power supply and capacitor issues. But the question is, why will the computer power on using the 210W power supply? I contacted Dell and they were of no help whatsoever. The guy told me that 160W wasn’t enough to power my machine and to order a 210W power supply correctly sized for my chassis. Gee, thanks! First of all, they don’t make 210W that fit in the mini towers, and second of all, why did it used to work just fine??? Oh, and no I have not upgraded anything (i.e., video card, etc.) which... Check for excessive dust and proper fan operation. Sounds like it is overheating and shutting down.

Try clearing the event log. Instructions from a Dell support forum:

Start the system.
Press 'F2' to enter System Setup.
Under the Maintenance heading, highlight 'System Event Log' and press the 'Enter' key.
Highlight 'Clear System Event Log' and press the 'Enter' key.
Press the 'Esc' key twice to restart.

Hi, I am having a problem trying to PXE boot a Optiplex 780, the system hangs
on "Transferring Image".
From what I have seen on other forums this may be linked to shared IRQ's for
the hard drive and/or the NIC, some suggest changing the IRQ for one of the
devices to solve the problem, unfortunately the IRQ assignments do not appear
within the BIOS on this model of pc.
Alternatively, most other people having similar problems seem to have
resorted to using an alternative application for PXE boot, if anyone can
recommend any PXE boot software which will definately work with this model then
I would appreciate any recommendations.
Thanks for any assistance.

I just got a brand new XPS 8910 with i7 6th gen 3.4ghz, 16gb ram desktop. I have been using a XPS 8500 desktop for 5+ years and have been thoroughly happy with its performance so far. I used a SSD with it for fast boot and general performance boost. I did the same thing with the new XPS and put a Sandisk Ultra II 240gb on it and installed Windows 10 there.

The factory boot time was 37 seconds from a cold boot (post through the login screen).
With the SSD and legacy boot (non UEFI) the boot time is 45 seconds.

My old XPS booted in 15 seconds.

A 5+ year newer machine boots 30 seconds slower. What am I missing.

I need a resolution soon or this is going back.

I just got an Optiplex gx280. The reason that I got it was because after turning it on, the fan would start to speed up to the point of it sounding like a mini jet engine. I took a look at it and the hard drive is fine, so is the RAM, & the capacitors. I think that the problem is that there is no thermal putty between the fan & the processor. Also the computer won't boot. When I turn it on this is what it does:
It starts running
The fan starts speeding up (Still no boot screen, or anything else)
The fan tops speed
A couple seconds later the computer shuts off and an amber light starts flashing (Not the one on the Mother Board)
Does anybody know how to fix this?
Thanks in advance,

Panasa

Hi,
One last desperate attempt to maybe get this to work...  I have several Dell Optiplex 9010 mini towers and a box of Brocade 1020 CNAs (10Gb).  I am using all this to put together a VMware lab that is actually capable of running some loads.  Brocade of course is now QLogic...  I had the Brocade cards in the Optiplex and loading VSphere 6 up.  I had to flash the firmware/bootcode on the Brocade and download a VIB for ESXi.  I thought I was pretty much there until I started to run into a boot problem.  At first I thought it was because I was trying to boot from a USB stick, so I got some little 8GB SSDs and put those in, but it turns out the problem is the Brocade.  So, what happens is if I let the system boot on its own, it goes thru the intel RAID stuff, then the Brocade card initializes its ports...  as soon as that is done or about 2 seconds later, I get a complete screen of character garbage and it reboots.  I didn't notice this originally becuase strangely enough, if when the Brocade init screen comes up where you can hit cntrl B to get into its setup, or press X multiple times to skip - what looks like the port initialization - and I usually pressed X just to speed up the boot process, everything works fine.  ESXi boots, it loads the Brocade updated driver and it all works well.  But if I just leave it to boot on its own, it just keeps blowing up right after the Brocade bios messages.  I have been in... Hello, I own a Dell Optiplex 745, running Windows XP Professional 32-bit. The Dell System Direct isn't launching, even though it will download, it says .APPLICATION, which cannot be opened. Does anyone have a fix?

Answer:Dell Optiplex 745 - Windows XP Pro 32-bit Dell System direct issue.

The older versions of Dell System Detect are security risks - if you're running an antivirus program, it may be flagging and intercepting the program.  At any rate, you should NOT be using Windows XP online at this point, as it has seen no security updates in almost two years - you really need to upgrade to a supported version of Windows (at this point, that's a minimum of Windows 7).

I am wondering if the Optiplex 7010 will physically accept the 850W PSU from the Dell precision workstation. I can't seem to find any dimensions for the stock PSU in the Optiplex, and the Optiplex has that latch that snaps in front of the PSU.

I am aware that the CPU power on the Optiplex is 4-pin and the Precision PSU only has 8-pin, but maybe I can modify it or get an adapter.

When the PC starts up, the dell loading screen begins. Normally this takes around a few seconds but this time it didn't end. We've tried all the diagnostic tests and they all came back fine. Also tried disconnecting all external cables (ie headphones, ethernet etc). Powered on and off multiple times and no change.
By the way, I don't know if this is related or not, but last night before the issue occurred, I was randomly logged out. Once it logged me back in, everything was closed and there was a small square of like TV static towards the bottom right corner. I restarted and it fixed the issue there but I don't know.
Thanks in advance, Sean

Hi
my Dell Inspiron 14z is stuck on the Dell Logo at boot up.
it was working well yesterday, but just become freeze at boot up
I can't press F2 F8 or F12 because it freezes at this point.
Releasing the residual charge did nothing (I drained the battery, have no courage to remove battery as the procedure is kind of complicated) - same problem
Restarting and tapping F12 highlights 'Boot options' but at this point it freezes.
Restarting with Fn pressed had no effect - same problem.

Any advice greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Eric
