Ctrl C - Ctrl V - Ctrl Tab Not working

Question: Ctrl C - Ctrl V - Ctrl Tab Not working

I have new HP i5 laptop running Windows 7. It was working normally until 3 weeks ago aprox., then after several
updates, the combinations of keys:
"Ctrl C", "Ctrl
V", "Ctrl shift" and "Ctrl Tab" stop working.
The others combinations works well, for new documents, bold, etc.
I ask to HP support we updated the hardware related, and I also tried to unnistall all fixes and apps installed since
the failure comes, but nothing works.
Any of you have a solution or idea of what to do to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Ctrl C - Ctrl V - Ctrl Tab Not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I hope I'm posting in the right place. Sadly, I've spent 4 hours trying to fix this to no avail. I have tried to uninstall the keyboard driver, which for some reason reinstalls(?) itself when I come back from a restart. I have tried to install a new keyboard driver ( but this does not work. I just got the laptop today, and after I finished setting up Win 7 I noticed this problem.I am a total noob, please redirect me to the right place for help, or ask for more details if necessary. I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10 installed.

In Google search box, when I type Ctrl+Z( for undo), it does NOT work. Neither does Ctrl+Y( for redo). When I type Ctrl+backspace for deleting the preceding word, it works perfectly, but when I type Ctrl+Delete to delete the following word, it does NOT work at all. Kindly help me out of this problem.

In Notepad, Ctrl+Z( undo) works but Ctrl+Y(redo) does not. Neither does Ctrl+backspace(to delete the preceding word) but Ctrl+Delete(to delete the following word) works perfectly.

I don't know why some shortcut keys work and some don't. Please tell me how to make all these shortcut keys work in Google search box as well as in Notepad.

Yours sincerely

my mouse pad isn't working i don't know what to do? like i said in the title i tried almost everything please help

Answer:I have an Toshiba Satellite win 10 my mouse pad isn't working i tried ctrl f5 ctrl f8 and i have tried just pressing does two.

Did you per chance just upgrade to Window 10 right before it happened? If that is the case, this happens a lot.

Try the following and see if it fixes it...

1. Go into "Control Panel".
2. Click "Hardware and Sound".
3. Now click "Mouse and Touchpad".
4. Now go to "Additional mouse options".
5. The Mouse Properties window will open. In here click on your device.
6. Make sure your device is set to enabled. If it isn't then click "Enable Device".
7. Exit both that screen and "Control Panel".

It should work now.

Also, you might also want to check for updates to your drivers.

Thread title pretty much sums it up: CTRL-A disabled, CTRL Key Works, A Key Works, Other CTRL-combos work. I use CTRL-V, CTRL-C, CTRL-Z, etc all the time.

CTRL-A has never worked for me, in any application. Instead of selecting all, CTRL-A pastes, the same as CTRL-V, only when you use CTRL-A, in addition to pasting, it also makes a system sound, kind of like a knock sound. Out of desperation to identify the sound I looked control panel sounds and listened to all of them, it's not there.

I've never really needed CTRL-A until now because I'm wanting to use a specific application that has no other way to select all except CTRL-A, so I'm now desperate...

Any help will be much appreciated.

Hello Dave mate have you run either of these< if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2
if not do them in safe mode and see if that fixes the problem.

HELP, just bought my first Thinkpad, the X301 from tigerdirect. Everything's great except that it freezes every now and then, at least once a day.  Haven't installed anything other than factory pre-installed stuff, thought it was the McAfee hence got rid of it, running AVG antivirus now. Thought it was IE so switched to Firefox, no help there neither, Google Chrome, still freezes. Strange thing is, on Vista Business, when it freezes, there is nothing you can do except for HARD RESET!  I mean CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing at all, neither did CTRL-SHIFT-ESC. Are there any other owners facing the same issues? Updated the X301 with patches, both ThinkVantage and Windows, still hangs. It's very annoying to pay such a high price to go back to primitive Windows that freezes.  Is this normal? Please help. Thank you. Message Edited by teeteet on 10-27-2008 08:35 AM

Answer:X301 - Freezes all the time, CTRL-ALT-DEL / CTRL-SHIFT-ESC no effect

I had a similar issue with my Tigerdirect x301 but seemed to have resolved it by doing a clean install of Vista. There is a good thread on the forums over on on how to do this. In my particular case I eliminated most of the extra but IMO unneeded software that came with it and went with 64bit Vista business since I had that OEM disc from my desktop build. I did have one temporary problem in the clean install with it stopping the Vista installation, saying I needed a driver for the Mat**bleep**a CD/DVD device, but I eventually got around that by going into the BIOS and switching the SATA controller mode option to Compatibility from AHCI mode. I got this thing last week and it must have froze 10-12 times in the first two days and in the five days since I did the clean install it has not crashed once and I swear it does everything faster.  Just this afternoon I added another 2 gb of RAM and looking forward to see what 4 gb will do for speed.

Hello. I encountered a weird problem.

I recently bough Acer Aspire 5734Z with Windows 7 Home Edition installed. When I type CTRL + C or CTRL + V my touchpad stops working for a few seconds. Then it get back to normal. And Except this the functions of ctrl + c and ctrl + v works.

This happens all the time, no matter how much I copy, I can copy nothing doing just the combination and my touch pad freezes.

When playing games as GTA Vice City I have problems using WASD movement at the same time as I adjust the screen(camera) with touch pad. Suddenly lot of combinations stop working, and I have to either stop walking around (WASD combinations) and use touchpad to adjust screen, then stop using touchpad and go back to using WASD.

I hope you understand. I am not very good at explaining things. And I really hope to find a solution to this.

When I did first-run of the laptop, the touchpad didnt have scrolling function working. So I went to, found my computer model, selected Windows 7 Home Edition and installed the newest touchpad driver 64bit. And it worked. Scrolling working. But freezing problems still occurs. And I think it might be some windows 7 anti multitasking function or something.

Hello all,
A question regarding to DOS FTP data transfer, here's the setup.

Server : Window 7 IIS FTP site
Client : Window 7 FTP client using DOS prompt

My purpose is trying to record the data speed value(Kbytes/sec.) showed on DOS client prompt,
so I create a data stream from Server to Client(i.e. get file from FTP server), for my experiments needed,
I need to shut down while data stream is transfering, hence I used Ctrl+C to stop file transfering and then
record the speed value.

Similarly, I create a data stream from Client to Server(i.e. put file to FTP server), but somehow I can't shut down
file tranfering by Ctrl+C or Ctrl+Break until the file has been transmitted completely, so that I can't observe the
speed value instantly.

Could anyone please explain why would this happen?
Any help will be appreciated!

Hi all!
I need help to use macros properly. It is my first attempt at doing this, and I don't understand what I am doing wrong.

I have found this thread which resembles my problem, but I still do not understand what to do

Basically, I have 2 Excel spreadsheets open.
One is List A, the other is List B (Master List).

I have worker codes in List A, and have to find them in the B list to assign them a code (1) in column M.

What I did was go in my first spreadsheet, and selected the first worker code. Then, I started recording my Macro from there.
Ctrl+C worker code
Ctrl+Tab to second spreadsheet
Ctrl+F to open find box
Ctrl+V to paste the worker code copied from before
Close the search box
Cursor now over Worker code, Move over to column M by pressing the RIGHT arrow 12 times (from A to M)
Type "1" and then Enter
Ctrl+Tab to come back to first spreadsheet
Down Arrow to move on to next worker code

However, the Macro looks like this :
Cells.Find(What:="A4WL7CPA3BRX5", After:=ActiveCell, LookIn:=xlFormulas, _
LookAt:=xlPart, SearchOrder:=xlByRows, SearchDirection:=xlNext, _
MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False).Activate
Application.CutCopyMode = False
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "1"

In Bo... Read more

Answer:Solved: Macro in Excel help! Using CTRL+V inside a CTRL+F

Macro recorder only record specific actions, not generic actions.
So you can't use it to repeat the steps for other cells.
You have to code it specifically in VBA.

As for your case you can have a lookup formula in column M of the Master list to do the check.

eg in cell M12 of List B, type
[List A.xlsm]Sheet1'!A:A,A12)

this goes to your List A first column to count the number of instances the value in cell A12 occurs.
Assuming there is no duplicate, the result is either 1 if found or 0 if not found.

If there are more than one instances in List A, the formula can be adapted to
[List A.xlsm]Sheet1'!A:A,A12)>0)*1

*1 will ensure that the result which is True or False becomes 1 or 0.

Hello. I'm usually pretty proficient in handling typical squirreliness with my computer but this one's a tough one for me to wrap my mind around. Here's my computer specs:

Windows XP
P4 2.8Ghz
nvidia 5200 vid card w/ 512MB RAM
Turte Beach Santa Cruz audio card
Seagate 160GB HD
NOD32 antivirus

Just recently I'd been gone to work and my girlfriend was at home on the computer. She usually goes on myspace, xanga, facebook a lot and generally doesn't stray far from those activities. I got home and she pointed out the computer was acting weird.

When I hit ctrl+alt+del, the screen just gets a light blue sheen over it until I click and then it's gone with no sign of the task manager. Also in firefox I cannot use the ctrl keys. The left ctrl key when pressed immediately makes the font size in the window larger and larger and after 2 or 3 presses opens a new tab in firefox. The right ctrl key yesterday was opening a new tab going to gmail and today is doing a variety of things including going back a page and copying text to pages. I can't use any ctrl key combinations in any software without it doing something strange. In Azureus it opens a file's statistics for example. I'm a key command junkie so this is a huge problem and I don't know if my computer's been compromised or what.

Hi... I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 on my Dell Inspiron 1720 with a tricked out Firefox 3 with a bunch of extensions, and all of a sudden today I started notice that Ctrl + S and Ctrl + F, 2 keyboard shortcuts that I use ALL THE TIME, are no longer working in ANY APPLICATION. The F and Control keys are working fine separately and other common shortcuts such as Ctrl + C, V, A, O, and P are working just fine.

I've tried it in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Notepad, Paint and Dreamweaver and Ctrl + S and Ctrl + F don't work in either one of those applications. The weird thing is without doing much of anything, it was working at some point today after I had noticed it WASN'T working, but now I rebooted for another reason and those 2 shortcuts are not working again.

By the way, I went into Vista's Ease of Access center (previously called Accessibility I believe), and everything is turned off.

And I also tried the control key to the right of my keyboard. None of it works.

Very annoying... Anyone got any ideas or know of any app that will help me find out what the problem is?

Thank you very much in advance, any help's appreciated

Answer:Solved: Help... Ctrl+F and Ctrl+S don't work for me half the time on any app

So... Any ideas?? This still is happening a day later.

Nevermind... Just realized the problem was a little program called Audio Identifier version 0.7.1

I used to use keys combination from Alt+Ctrl+F1 to Alt+Ctrl+F5 as hotkeys for certain application. But in my new Lenovo ThinkPad w530 with Windows 7 x64 I can not do it, as it seems, that some pre-installed software has registered these combination for itself. When I press them, absolutely nothing happens, but if I try to assign these combinations in my app, i get the error message, that they are already registered for some other application.I've checked twice all installed applications, starting from Window 7 itself. Seems, that none of them uses these keys.Well, I've tried than to stop virtually any software, incuding resident utilities, but this hotkyes are still busy Is there any ideas, which piece of software pre-installed by Lenovo might reserve these combination for itself?Or is there any way to detect, which application intercepts handling this keys? Thanks in advance!

Answer:hotkeys Alt+Ctrl+F1 - Alt+Ctrl+F5 - which pre-install application intercepts them

So what? Whether nobody has the same issue with occupied hotkeys or has no time to answer? I suppose, that the problem is somehow connected to the package Intel Management and Security Status, which is pre-installed by Lenovo. But i could not find any option to change these default hotkeys or disable them at all.

My remote desktop session does not appear to be sending the ctrl+alt+left (CAL) or ctrl+alt+right (CAR) combinations to the target machine.

Yesterday everything worked fine. I installed Windows Vista Ultimate 64 and could successfully RD to my laptop machine, which is running XP Pro SP2. CAL and CAR worked.

Today I installed SP1 on the Vista machine. Now my RD won't sent CAL or CAR.

I downloaded a simple keyboard tester application and installed it on both machines. Locally on the Vista machine, CAL and CAR are detected. Same thing locally on the XP machine. When I RD from Vista to XP and try the keyboard test the program shoes that it is receiving the CTRL+ALT combination but doesn't register when I hit the left or right arrow key at the same time. Interestingly, the up and down arrows *do* register.

I tried the RD connection from XP to Vista. Everything works normally. I tried an RD connection from another XP SP2 machine to my laptop. It works.

Any ideas? Is there some sort of key binding in Vista that takes the CAL and CAR combinations before RD can get them? Is RD in Vista 64 filtering them out for some reason?

The XPS 15-9530 keyboard requires that you hold the Function key to do home/end (Function+Left is Home and Function+Right is End).  That works fine, but I have found that if Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End are a bit finicky.  Specifically, the key order I have to press to do a Ctrl+Home is Ctrl then Function then Left.  If I do Function then Ctrl then Left, it only sends a Home and not a Ctrl+Home.  Is there any way to work around this?  It's a bit annoying to have my Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End fail so often while I'm retraining myself.

I have an HP envy laptop less than 6months old operating on windows 8 and my Ctrl key doesn't work as it should.I know the Ctrl key itself is not broken as it works when pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete or Ctrl + Left mouse key to open links in new tab and Ctrl + P to print. However the shortcuts as Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V, Ctrl + X don't work at all. This is the case in all programmes including word, Excel and Firefox. Ctrl + Insert and Shift + Insert do work for copy and paste function but frankly they are far less convenient. Any suggestions would be greatly apprectiated as it's very frustrating. Thank you

Answer:ctrl c and ctrl v not working

Hello jc84ox,

You?re not able to use your copy and paste function.

Go to device manager and uninstall the keyboard. Restart the computer.

Do a hard reset.
Once the computer is off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.

This should reset the hardware in the computer.

Turn the computer back on.

Open up command prompt and run the following command SFC /scannow.

This will scan the system files and correct any errors that it can.

Here is a link to command prompt.

When you go to open command prompt, right click and run as administrator.

If the function was working in the past you might try a system restore.

This will take the system back to when everything was working correctly without affecting your personal files.

Windows 8 has a new feature which will uninstall and reinstall windows without affecting your files.

Here is a link to both options if you would like to give either of them a try.

Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!

Let me know how everything goes.

Have a good day.

Hi guys,Right, basically the problem is that shortcuts like CTRL+V, CTRL+C, CTRL+Y, CTRL+ALT+DEL) don't work, but I know the CTRL key isn't broken as I can use CTRL+F in MS Word. The SHIFT key is also having similar problems, although I can use it to highlight stuff so that is also not broken. My keyboard is on my laptop, and it's set to the English language. I have run 11 different spyware/adware/virus/registry cleaning programs and so if something uninvited caused this then it is now gone, and I just need to fix the problem, which guess can be done through the registry - I just don't know how.I've done a search and a couple of threads seem to be similar problems, however no solution was arrived at or the thread is so old that the help links are no longer hereclick hereThanks in advance!

Answer:CTRL shortcuts don't work (i.e. CTRL+V)

I find it odd that CTRL+F works and not the others. Have you opened Notepad and see if the CTRL+V and CTRL+C work there?Suggest you connect an external keyboard and see if your CTRL functions work then. This will then indicate whether your laptop keyboard is faulty or not.

My colleague's pc suddenly would no longer respond when she pressed ctrl+p, then a day later she discover that her ctrl+f no longer works. We tried to reassign it, but it appears that ctrl+p and ctrl+f are still correctly assigned to the print and find commands.

We have tried deleting the ctrl+p keyboard shortcut and then putting it back in, but somehow when we press the ctrl button and the p together nothing happens (we can type in ctrl q for example, just not ctrl together with p).

When we press "reset all", the ctrl+p is back under "current keys", but still doesn't work.

This is happening in all applications. We have also attached a different keyboard and tried plugging it in different usb ports. All with the same result.

Has anyone got any ideas what might be causing this?

Running a brand new ASUS windows 8 based desktop. CTRL+C and CTRL+V work only partially, when I am using them many times they don't paste or copy (though they do some of the time) but they make my browser open a window or switch tabs or like make the right click menu pop up. It is so bizarre, I don't know if it's a bug or what, has anyone else experienced this? It is very annoying when I am so used to doing it.

Answer:CTRL+C and CTRL+V Problems

Hello kjelljs,

FYI, I have not experienced that problem. The ctrl +c and ctrl +v work consistently for me. I guess the best thing is to try (at this point) is another keyboard (if you have one available) and if you are currently using a wireless keyboard, maybe try a wired version. Good luck.

I would like to change the wording on the Windows 7 logon page from "Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to unlock this computer" to "Press CTRL+ALT+INSERT to unlock this computer". My company uses a lot of VMware View desktops and it's tedious to continually inform users of the keystrokes. I have searched through the forums here and cannot find the file that I need to configure. I have downloaded Resource Hacker and love it but I just need the file name. Can anyone point me in the right direction or let me know if this is even possible?

Answer:Change "CTRL+ALT+DELETE" wording to "CTRL+ALT+INSERT"

You could do what we do here at work. We turn it off. It doesn't actually protect anything these days, just an annoyance.

Secure Logon - Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to log on

I cannot use the CTRL and W keys on my keyboard. I have gone through all of the regular uninstall the keyboard and all associated drivers with the computer and none of it has worked. I am using the Microsoft Wireless Comfort Keyboard 5000. Any ideas what could be going wrong? It happened earlier today out of no where. The batteries have also been changed with new ones and that did not fix it. I have also done a Windows Restore to a previous time when it did work and that did not help. I have no other keyboards to test with at this time either. Does anyone have any ideas? Both keys work on their own but not together.

Edit: I cannot use the W key with any other keys.

To close a window try Alt+F4. What other hotkey functions are you trying to do with the W key?

open a word/text document and press a few random letters.

then hold ctrl + F if a find box pops up your ctrl button is fine
then hold alt + F if the file menu drops down your alt button is fine
finally try using the delete key to delete the text.

Hello Everyone. I have an ideapad y500 for 3 years now and suddently the control key (left side) is just being ignored. The right ctrl key works as expected. Googleing around, I discovered that many lenovo models have this kind of issue. It's not an OS problem as I logged in a linux enviroment and it also not worked. I have tryied many supposed solutions found on web like a fresh reboot, pressing fn keys, etc ... etc .. etc ... except pluging a external keyboard. (what I am going to try really soon, hopefully) Want to know if any of you have this issue and how have you solved it. Best Regards,

Hi, I hope someone can help me out.

A few days ago, some of my keyboard shortcuts stopped working for me. As far as I know, the only shortcuts that refuse to work with me are:

ctrl + c
ctrl + x
ctrl + v
ctrl + t (this one used to work until literally just now while I was testing it)
I don't think that this is a hardware issue because (oddly enough), the following keyboard shortcuts DO work.

ctrl + w
ctrl + n
ctrl + p
ctrl + d
I have already uninstalled my keyboard drivers and restarted my computer several times.

This problem affects me across Firefox, Chrome, Line...

The only thing of note that happened to me before this started happening is that Firefox updated and kicked my old data into a folder on my desktop.

I desperately hope that someone can help me out; my googling so far has been fruitless.

The problem is when i press ctrl-alt-del to bring up the task manager. Instead of the task manager it brings up a dialog box that tells me the users who are setup in this installation. It tells me whether or not the user is active, and then gives me the option to connect or disconnect the user from two buttons on the bottom.

How do i change XP pro's setting so I can access my task manager instead of this user status dialog thing when i press ctrl-alt-del??

After running my virus scans on my work computer my Malewarebytes wiped out some key registry items and/or hot keys needed to run my system right. When I tr to regularly turn my comp and and get to the desktop my screen had nothing but the background showing. Only way to access anything was with ctrl+alt+delete.I then searched for the explorer.exe file to see if it was still there and it was but something had to of been wiped that allows the process to work. I then decided to try and reinstall windows. When doing so I was able to get to the part of the installation asking for language but after that it freezes up with 31 minutes left in the installation proccess. After 2 hrs of waiting and then trying it once again I have found that it will not work.I spoke with a family member who works on computers for a living and he told me about the Ctrl+F11 option after he was able to extract what I needed off the computer for me. He gave me a copy from the Dell website of what and how to use the Dell System Restore by Symantec. I've been trying all morning long to hit the Ctrl+F11 but it continues to just regularly boot up until the reinstallation screen comes up asking to put the disc to finish the installation that freezes with 31 minutes left.Is there anything I can do to get the recovery to work or is my work computer a waste of money now?The computer is a Dell VOSTRO 200 with Windows XP version. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I hope this is enough info to help.

Hi, Have a problem with T43(win XP) Ctrl C (copy) not working.  Have run diagnostics then run windows in Safe mode and Ctrl C works! So have assumed that it is one of the services that is causing the problem.  So started terminating services one by one and some stage Ctrl C will work however it doesn't seem to be consistent.  All I know is that if I terminate TpKmapMn.exe, TpkmpSvc.exe, TPKMGR.exe or atievxx.exe(x2) that at some stage Ctrl C will start working.  From the web I see that these Thinkpad services and I have run a virus check and checked the sizes of the executables and all seems in order.  BTW Ctrl C (right and left) do not leave any thing a DOS window whereas Ctrl V & X show up as ^V & ^X (as expected). Any help would be greatly appreciated - this is driving me crazy!!

Question: Ctrl+ not working

I bought a used 460s Thinkpad a couple of months ago and have been unable to use Crtl+.  Have removed and then reinstalled driver, tried in both tablet and regular mode and tried other suggestions like fn, crtl, alt but nothing works.  Tried to roll back os system and it crashed my computer and I was unable to get it to recognize cd player so had to take it in to a computer repair shop.  They fixed the os system but could not fix the ctrl+ problem.  Before contacting support just wanted to check here to see if there was a solution.  Using Win 10.

Answer:Alt ctrl del not working

Whoops sorry, I posted a link thinking Ctrl + Alt + Del wasn't working for you =p

Keyboards can break quite easy if a liquid or crumbs and whatnot have build up inside. Cheaper keyboards also have a tendency to break down rapidly as well. If you could ask your neighbor to borrow their keyboard for a few seconds I would try that first. See if you can try a PS2 and a USB keyboard to see if maybe its a problem with your mobo or a driver.

(vista home premium 32bit) (laptop)a short while ago, as I went to delete a file, explorer spazzed out. flickering, greyouts, all kinds of stuff in the wrong place. as I went to bite the "this machine doesn't want to boot into windows" bullet, I managed to locate the dialogue box from that attempt at deletion, which was out of sorts, and completed the deed. the spazzing stopped. but the start menu suddenly consisted solely of "default programs" and "windows update", and the winkey stopped working altogether. so, I tracked down taskmanager in a windows explorer instance, and used it to shoot the shaggy explorer.EXE, and run a new instance. got the start menu back.but the windows key continued to not work. ctrl-esc didn't either. for a lark, I opened up a game I have that uses the winkey to bring up a menu.... it worked. alt-tabbed out, the winkey gets me the start menu like it should. BUT. winkey shortcuts (wk-e, wk-r, wk-d, and all that jazz) still don't work, nor does ctrl-esc.since this laptop currently will make me suffer greatly to get it booted back up, does anyone have suggestions on fixing the windows key without rebooting?*edit*I see this has been moved to "am I infected?". I'd like to point out that in the time since this was originally posted I've done scans with avast and mbam, and come up clean in both. Check and make sure that you don't have a macro in your O07 system that uses CTRL + P as a part of its macro, thereby disabling your print function.

Also, I'd scan for viruses and such - it is possible you might have been hit with a macro malware....

Recently I encountered the following problem: Ctrl+S combination won't work in any application, specifically MS Office, Notepad, Notepad++ and others. Not only nothing is saved, but when I try to shortcut any command to Ctrl+S
in Word for example, the field doesn't recognize the buttons and stays empty. Using onscreen keyboard doesn't work, however booting in Safe Mode solves the problem, so I guess the problem is some of my silent applications which recognizes the command. However,
I haven't detected any change when pressing Ctrl+S and I have no idea what might be responsible. Any suggestions about how to narrow down the criminal would be highly appreciated.

I am running Windows 8 Pro 64-bit on a Dell Latitude E5530 with all drivers installed. I use Comodo Firewall + avast! Free for security, Launchy, Skype and muTorrent are my other start-up programs. However, stopping any of these doesn't
solve the problem.

Searching the internet turned out useless, except for a thread which gave me the idea of booting into Safe Mode. I hope the tech guys might have some useful experience or at least provide some insights on how to proceed with troubleshooting.

I think you should either update your driver for your keyboard via the device manager or find your keyboard manufacturer and serial number and go to the website and download and reinstall the driver for it there although it just could be the software your using for it thats not letting you use the keyboard shortcut.

Hope this helps bud.

When I enter the Alt key or the Ctrl key, nothing happens. All other keys function normally.

For example, when I enter Ctrl Alt Del, nothing happens. In Photoshop, when I enter Ctrl or Alt, such as Alt left click for cloning, the system acts as if the alt key wasn't pressed. I have done the following:
- used another USB keyboard to verify nothing is wrong with the Ctrl or Alt keys on the original laptop keyboard where I am experiencing the problem.
- Ran McAfee virus checker - no viruses found
- Ran Spybot
- restarted Windows in Safe Mode and verified that Ctrl and Alt keys don't work there as well.
- Ran Hijack This and saved Log
- Created the DDS.txt, Attach.txt, and gmner.txt files

Hello, Dan Radin
Welcome to TSF

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
Finally, please reply using the button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.

If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. Just a few days ago, both my Ctrl keys seem to have suddenly stopped working for some reason. It's proving to be quite the hassle for as a digital artist, I use a lot of shortcut keys, majority of which consist of the Ctrl key.

A couple of days before the Ctrl keys stopped working, the A key stopped working. I didn't seem to be the keyboard so I tried restarting my computer and it started working again. Restarting my computer doesn't unfortunately help my Ctrl keys.

Hi all,Both of my Thinkpad's ctrl keys are not registering.  ???This is not a hardware glitch as they sometimes start working again (also, it seems unlikely that the two keys would break at the same time). Any help as to what's causing his would be helpful.  Thanks. If it makes any difference:-Win 98-Thinkpad 600

I can't ctrl-c to copy text.
I can right-click and then click on copy though.

I thought that the ctrl key is broken but ctrl-x, ctrl-v, ctrl-f, etc works.
I tried other profiles and it is still the same.
I did system restore and a virus scan but it still doesn't work.

I haven't tried changing the keyboard yet though I'm not very optimistic that it will work since the ctrl key seems fine.

Any other ideas?

Both CTRL keys on my keyboard have stopped working - both at the same time which would lead me to believe its not a keyboard fault. I'm running XP home which is up to date. Could this be a virus? apart from the CTRL keys everthing seems fine.

Answer:CTRL keys not working

can you elaborate on this slightly?when did they work? does system restore if using win xp or win me fix it?

I rebooted my comp today and noticed there was a weird background on my desktop that said warning: spyware threat has been detected on your pc and goes on about the registry and then provides a link to some spyware download page. To say the least this is only the start of my problems, alt, ctrl, del is no longer working. I cant even access msconfig. Adaware and spybot dont find anything.

Oddly enough it doesnt appear to have effected my web browsing as I can still surf the web with no problems although google seems to be a bit slower than usual.

I have done the following so far:
- Tried another keyboard with Alt and Ctrl keys that work.
- Ran McAfee virus checker.
- Ran SpyBot
- Turned off System Restore, rebooted into Safe Mode and ran FixKlez

None of this has helped. Alt and Ctrl keys don't have any effect. For instance, Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't do anything.- Ran Hijack this.

Attached is the .txt file.

Please help!

Been trying to play Half-Life and various other FPSs and notice that the key combination ctrl and space doesn't do anything. No jumping while crouching (or long jumping in HL, making the game impossible) for me!

I know some keyboard manufacturers disable certain key combinations during the manufacturing process for whatever reason, but I've tried different keyboards; this combination works on none of them and I find it hard to believe that five different manufacturers would omit the same key combinations.

How can I fix this problem? (I am running 7, by the way)

Answer:Ctrl + Space not working

i'm suffering from this too, yesterday somehow the ctrl+space stopped working and as a programmer this is a very common combination in various IDE's (content assist)

right now i went around this by making it ctrl+alt+space in eclipse IDE but still it is not comfortable.

Hi Truls,

I presume you are trying to acces the Task Manager to find out what processes are running. Try Right Clicking on the system taskbar at the bottom of the screen, the task manager should be one of the available options in the pop-up window.

I recently bought a new wireless keyboard to replace my Dell AT102w (I know I know, replacing a mechanical beast with a tiny chiclet, but it's necessary due to recent space issues).
For some reason the CTRL doesn't seem to work at all, there are two CTRL's as you'd expect and neither of them seem to register within windows I can't see both of them not working, seems like to much of a coincidence.

Here is the keyboard layout:

I've tried reinstalling drivers by removing the little dongle and putting it in a different USB but it doesn't help. What is strange is the keyboard has an FN key but no keys to use in conjunction with it.
Thanks for any replies/suggestions, it's greatly appreciated.

Answer:Keyboard CTRL not working.

The associated Fn keys are in blue and probably on the ASDFG.... keys.

You didn't say what the make and model number of the new keyboard is.

I would like my Task Manager to work as I need it to access other items. I am having problems installing a game as at the end of the installation process it says . 1628 unable to complete installation..

I have run CC CLeaner, WIndows Malicious Software Remover, Spybot Search and destroy and Counterspy all in safe mode but am still having no luck.

I also get the error message on windows start up that I have only gotten since i started trying to fix my comp.... error loading D0CE0C16B1" or similar.

Anyhoo I will post my hijack this log and PLEASE can someone help me out!!

Both of the ctrl buttons have completely stopped working on my lenovo thinkpad t61 keyboard. I find this odd because every other key on my keyboard seems to be working just fine.I determined that the ctrl keyboard buttons no longer work by experimenting with on-screen keyboard.I suppose the answer is to buy a new keyboard but this is weird enough that I have to ask - is there any reason why the left and right ctrl buttons might have suddenly stopped working?

Anyone think of why Ctrl + Alt + Del would stop working please? I can still get to XP Pro Task Manager by using Start > Help and Support > Task Manager, but obviously that's a poor second best.

Presumably it will return after a reboot, but as that's a 5-10 minute task (for everything to settle down) I'd like to try any other fixes that anyone can suggest please.

Terry, East Grinstead, UK

Answer:Ctrl + Alt + Del stopped working

but as that's a 5-10 minute task (for everything to settle down) Hi - Do you think there may be an infection causing this problem -Are there other problems like bad slowing and any redirecting , or is things just a bit slow -You can try to run disk check and see if there are any basic problems -Copy and paste this code into Run Box - Close all open programs including the internet - The scan should take about 30 to 45 mins and check/repair any faults it finds -CMD /C ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /R | SHUTDOWN /R /T 30 Click OK when you are ready and the item will reboot your computer after 30 seconds, and run a full 5 stage check -Thank you -

I have two machines that the keyboard won't work on the Ctrl-Alt-Del at logon.  Both are WinXP pro sp3.  Both started this today.  The mouse works fine.  My initial thought was that Microsoft really wants us to quit using XP, LOL.
I've tried:
Swapping in a known good keyboard,
Making sure connections are good,
Plugging the keyboard into different ports on the computer,
Rebooting, of course
Safe mode
- none of these helped.
I have a hard time believing in coincidences, so I've been seaching to see if there is malware out there that causes this.  I've shut down both as a precaution for now.  Has anyone seen anything like this?

Answer:Ctrl-Alt-Del not working at logon

If you are able to boot into Windows.....try resetting using the instructions in link below if you haven't tried doing that.
I agree that what happened is likely more than just a coincidence.
How to change the logon window and the shutdown preferences in Windows XP
Have you scanned for malware? If not, scan using the two programs below.....that's if you can boot into Windows.
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here
Double-click mbam-setup-2.X.X.XXXX.exe to install the application (X's are the current version number).
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
Once MBAM opens, when it says Your databases are out of date, click the Fix Now button.
Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box for Scan for rootkits.
Click the Scan tab at the top of the program window, select Threat Scan and click the Scan Now button.
If you receive a message that updates are available, click the Update Now button (the update will be downloaded, installed, and the scan will start).
When MBAM is finished scanning it will display a screen that displays any malware that it has detected.
Click the Remove Selected button.
MBAM will now delete all of the files and registry keys and add them to the programs quarantine. When removing the files, MBAM may require a reboot in order to remove some of them. If it displays ... Read more
