More Vipre scare tactics aimed at Kaspersky customers? Do you still trust Kaspersky or VIPRE?

Question: More Vipre scare tactics aimed at Kaspersky customers? Do you still trust Kaspersky or VIPRE?

Kaspersky Lab Used by Russia as a Tool to Spy on the U.S.

Recent reports by The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Washington Post detail Kaspersky Lab?s connections to the Russian government.

Software from Russian-based Kaspersky Lab has been used to steal sensitive and classified National Security Agency (NSA) data from an NSA contractor?s personal computer, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The 2015 hack apparently happened when the contractor took the data from the NSA and loaded it onto his computer, which contained Kaspersky antivirus software. Allegedly, the software enabled Russian hackers to see his files. The hack has not been disclosed by the government, noted the Wall Street Journal.

The Washington Post reported that the contractor, a U.S. citizen born in Vietnam, worked for the division of the NSA that creates tools to break into computers overseas for the purpose of gathering intelligence. The employee, who was sacked in 2015, probably did not take the materials for malicious purposes such as handing them to a foreign spy agency, The Washington Post noted.

A New York Times article details how Israeli intelligence officers looked on in real time as Russian government hackers searched computers for the code names of American intelligence programs.

Interestingly, neither the Wall Street Journal nor the Washington Post addressed the issue of why the employee took classified information home on his laptop.

Equally as interesting, the reports provide no information about how an NSA employee?s laptop could be hacked so easily, nor why it took a year for the hack to be disclosed. Plus, neither newspaper provided any evidence of Kaspersky Lab working directly for the Russian secret service.

In a statement, Kaspersky said:

?Kaspersky Lab has not been provided any evidence substantiating the company?s involvement in the alleged incident reported by the Wall Street Journal on October 5, 2017, and it is unfortunate that news coverage of unproven claims continue to perpetuate accusations about the company.

?However, as the trustworthiness and integrity of our products are fundamental to our business, we are seriously concerned about the article?s implications that attackers may have exploited our software. We reiterate our willingness to work alongside U.S. authorities to address any concerns they may have about our products and respectfully request any relevant information that would enable the company to begin an investigation at the earliest opportunity.

?As a private company, Kaspersky Lab does not have inappropriate ties to any government, including Russia, and the only conclusion seems to be that Kaspersky Lab is caught in the middle of a geopolitical fight.?

Last month, the U.S. Government, Best Buy, and Office Depot suspended business with Kaspersky, as we reported in a blog.Click to expand...

I recently installed KAFree with CFW and CS settings. I have used KAV paid in the past but the full software versions affected the performance of my PC, so I found myself looking elsewhere. I purchased Kaspersky because of its high ratings.

Now that Kaspersky introduced a free version which is bare bones, my PC performs flawlessly, and I get the great protection that Kaspersky is known for. I consider this a good supplement to CFW but this is my personal opinion.

In recent days, there have been news articles about a possible Kaspersky, Russian intelligence connection. The US Government has taken steps to ban use of their products because of the allegations.

We all know that the other free software like Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, and Qihoo, are made in other countries, and also collect some form of user data during use including Microsoft WD.

My question to all of you is would you let the allegations against Kaspersky deter you from using their software, even their new free version?

My own personal opinion is that since the other free AV products are made elsewhere, and collect data. what's the difference? My focus is getting the best possible protection.

Your thoughts?

Answer:Kaspersky Products - To Trust or Not

if you are going to judge the potential of a security product based on news articles you are wasting your time.

as for the collecting data thingy, i still have to see an anti-virus product that does not collect any user data. quit worrying about that.

i will not be surprised if tomorrow i am told that even my mkv player was sending my data back home.

Microsoft Says Windows 7 Has Outdated Security, Wants You to Move to Windows 10
“Windows 7 is based on outdated security architecture,” Microsoft says. “Companies and users who won’t upgrade from Windows 7 within the next three years are facing enormous dangers,”
So what does this say about MS's ability to find/fix security issues over the next 3 years? Sounds like scare tactics to me.
I'll worry about this in 2020 when support for Win 7 officially ends. My desktop can't run anything beyond Win 7 and I'm in no rush to buy a new PC. My 2 cents...

Answer:Microsoft's new scare tactics

Considering
(1) as you noted, MSFT will continue to support Win7 until (some time in) 2020, and
(2) the 50%+ of the world still using Win7 are doing so having turned-down the opportunity to upgrade to Win10 for FREE,
I don't see it likely that many people will PAY to upgrade now.
Indeed, there are a significant number of people --- myself included --- that still continue to use XP systems!

I guess they decided that rogue anti-malware scare tactics work so well that they should do it too. That puts them on my never-recommend list.

Source - Windows 7 Kaspersky Lab releases technical preview of Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows 7 Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management systems, announces the release of a technical prototype of Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows 7.

The new OS will incorporate enhanced reliability, greater efficiency, an improved interface and extended working features both in global and local information networks.
The technical preview is a complex solution for securing computers running under Windows 7. The prototype includes not only an antivirus component but an effective and fully functional firewall and anti-spam filter.
At the heart of the new technical prototype is Kaspersky Lab?s new antivirus engine which is even more effective at detecting malicious programs than its predecessor. Kaspersky Lab Presents a New Version of Kaspersky Small Office Security to Reflect Modern Needs of Small Business
Kaspersky Lab announces its latest edition of the Kaspersky Small Office Security, the company?s security solution built specifically for businesses with fewer than 25 employees. This solution provides world-class protection and easy use without the need for specialist IT skills. New features make it easier to focus valuable resources on running and developing the business while keeping operations, customer?s and employee?s data secure.

Nowadays, small businesses are frequently becoming prey for cybercriminals because they generally pay less attention for cybersecurity while housing increasingly valuable data. According to recent survey results, the share of companies that allow usage of personal employee?s devices within the corporate network has grown to 62% in 2014. At the same time, although businesses realize that customer?s personal information (25%), payment requisites (13%) and trade secrets (12%) are among top priorities of their information security needs, they keep taking very basic protective measures, relying, for example, on free anti-malware products. Respondents indicated that they desire a powerful, but simple and easy-to-use security solution that would come at an affordable price.

Kaspersky Small Office Security is equipped with enterprise-grade technologies, but it was designed specifically to serve the needs of very small bu... Read more

Windows 10 64 Pro Anniversary Build Latest Update
Kaspersky Internet Security 2017 Latest Update
No other RealTime security software.

My portable programs SecurMyBit, VidCoder, etc... were under "Low Restricted" in Application Control.
I move them to "Trusted" in AC.
After couple of days, the programs rules are neither in "Trusted" or "Low Restricted".
When I run the programs, they appear under "Low Restricted" And I again move them to "Trusted" But after couple of days the same mentioned above i.e the programs rules are neither in "Trusted" or "Low Restricted".

Is it a bug or bug on Windows 10 64 or bug in KIS 2017 or ............?

Any info?

Any Kaspersky users experience the above?

Answer:Kaspersky Application Control - Kaspersky Internet Security 2017 bug?

Yes, this happens & not only in 2017 but in earlier versions as well.

I experience it as well, but not quite often as you are. Mine comes when i am disconnected from internet for a while & then connect again, then (i guess) KSN checks the app control rules again & places them (apps) as described in the KSN rule-set.

The problem come from the setting 'Load rule for applications from KSN' in application control, which is enabled by default.

This shouldn't be a problem if you are using default settings (Auto-mode) as Low restricted is basically Trusted in auto-mode. But if you use interactive mode, this causes a lot of prompts which can be quite annoying.

Question: Vipre

I want to ask the experts at Major Geeks -- do you know if Vipre is a good antivirus program? I guess version 4 just came out recently. I know MG has recommended Sunbelt products in the past (at one point CounterSpy was recommended for spyware removal).

For the life of me, I can't seem to find a lot of data on this antivirus online, and it doesn't seem to be included in the major antivirus software test comparisons. Is this because it's too new? It's hard for me to tell how effective this program is at catching viruses/spyware without more data.

Question: Vipre?

At the suggestion of the local compudoc we have begun switching the 5 systems in our network to Vipre antivirus protection. When the Norton subscription was up on one system a month or so ago, we switched that one. Everything seems to be going well. When asked about any noticeable differences she claimed to be noticing nothing different. The Norton subscription on my system ran out this past Thursday. That afternoon a balloon popped up saying something about Norton was off. Wow! There was an immediate change in my system. This is the first time I have ever let my antivirus subscription run out. After that balloon popped up my system began acting up. It's like it was virgin all over again. It was blazing along as fast as it did fresh out of the box. By Friday noon I had Vipre installed and running and my system is still speeding along nicely. All these years I never considered my system slow. In fact out of the 5, mine is one of the fastest. I never knew it could be this fast. The only change was the turn off of Norton. Is it possible that Norton slowed my system? Admittedly, after the change is not the best time to ask for advice about Vipre, but I would be pleased to hear any comments about Vipre any may wish to offer. Thanks, K.

Answer:Vipre?

I'm moving this to the Software Forum since it is not a malware problem and you can get more feedback from others that way.

Yes. It has long been considered to be a problem in this regards. Supposedly the newer versions are better, but I stop using them a very long time ago and seriously doubt that there all in one suites have really improved the performance issues.

Most of Sunbelt Software's business lies in supplying malware protection to its 25,000 Enterprise customers. Sunbelt also licenses its engine and sandbox analysis software to other vendors. Question: Vipre

Hello all. I have used counterspy for a year now and love it. But for my AV needs I have used NOD 32. But I seen sunbelt has the AV combined with counterspy for only 10 bucks since I own counterspy and will not crisscross with the active protection with NOD32. (as counterspy's active protection can and has.)
Has anyone used Vipre? And is it any good? Not worried about being a resource hog. From the website it looks like it only takes up 20 megs of ram anyway! My subscription for NOD32 is coming to an end in a week and was looking for something else.

Hey guys, I just want to complain to all the Kaspersky makers. First of all, Kaspersky 2009 takes forever to scan, like Literally! Compared to other anti-viruses and Internet Security, I used to be a loyal Kaspersky user from 6.0 to 7.0, but now you see when I upgraded to 2009 when it came out, everything changed which is ridiculous. Like I said, Scanning takes like forever which could take a week or something just to get finished if I full scan. Hell, Quick-scan even lags the heck out of my computer and takes hours to finish(OMG).
Now I know it's not my computer's problem like most of you would say. I have a pretty decent high-end custom-built computer that's really still better than most Home users have and I'm using an Intel Quad Core Q6600, 4GB(2xgb of Dual Channel) Corsair RAM DDR2-800(PC2-6400). My Video card is really good too because it's a GeForce 8800GTX, which is still good still.

Anyways i just want to point out that i seriously don't know why Kaspersky 2009 all of a sudden slow. The MAIN PROBLEM is that I left my computer just last night and it's stuck at 22% because I decided you know what, I might as well stop my scanning because it's taking up SO MANY RESOURCES! I mean for Crying out loud! But you see, when I stopped the scanning it lags my whole computer so I had to restart my computer improperly and hit the reset button because Kaspersky got issues since it wouldn't stop the scan and would probably take hou... hi gents
i want to know the difference between kaspersky antivirus and kaspersky free . and what about this combo(KFA+ZAM premium+APPcheck free)+Malwarebyte antimalware on demand scanner . is KAV has antiphsing protection ??

Answer:Difference between Kaspersky Free and Kaspersky Antivirus

the only difference between KAV and KAF is that KAV has system watcher = behavior blocker. system watcher is one of the most powerful weapons of kaspersky that's why they charge you for that
they both have phishing protection

your combo looks OK to me. I can recommend that
but I don't agree with Malwarebytes because it seems redundant to me. zemana as the second opinion scanner is sufficient enough. It's realtime protection is different from its on-demand scanner. You will get better result with on-demand scanning than the realtime protection

PC mag has this rated by far as number 1 AV program, never heard it mentioned here. I am thinking about changing from Norton NIS, because of costs and not having an anti-malware. Norton is not even rated top ten for some reason, maybe price. It works very well for me, great support, even catches a lot of malware. I would like to get a cheaper program so I could get an antimalware program.  Superantimalware is ok, but I liked mbam better, would like to try Emisoft too, since it is highly recommended here.

My mom recorded a segment on HSN that sold Vipre antivirus. She wanted me to watch it to see what I thought about it. It sounded like a great deal, but I've never heard of Vipre and wouldn't want to spend that much money, no matter how great the "deal" sounds, on something that really is a flop.
Has anyone heard of this program, or had any experiences with it?

Answer:Has anyone ever heard of Vipre?

Yeah, VIPRE is an AV originally developed by Sunbelt Software. Sunbelt Software was acquired by GFI Software.

I've had a beta version of VIPRE running on an old machine, it worked fine except that sometimes it made the machine boot slowly.
But that was a beta. Don't know about the final version.

I won a version of Vipre AV Premium on the Twitter giveaway. I'm currently running Norton AV, Malwarebytes free, Threatfire, and Prevx 3.0 free. I have 250 days left on my Norton license, and 1 year of Vipre. I know alot of people despise Norton, but I haven't heard much about Vipre. I frequently download files, around 1 a day. Which AV should I use? Thanks.

Answer:Norton AV vs. Vipre AV

I don't see anything wrong in using Norton products, in fact Norton/Symantec received AV-Comparitives Product of the Year Award for 2009.http://www.youtube.com/user/avcomparativeshttp://www.av-comparatives.org/index.php?o...&Itemid=164Review of VIPRE Antivirus+AntiSpywarehttp://www.brighthub.com/computing/smb-sec...iews/64755.aspx

Question: Vipre Enterprise

Never heard of this, it seems reasonable and the trial seems to be running ok, but I'm a bit leary because I have never heard of it before nor has it made av-comparisons. Anyone have anything good or bad to say about it?

http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/

Answer:Vipre Enterprise

Been using the consumer version for more than a year now on my home stuff. Seems to catch the nasties and doesn't use a lot of system resources. It's been reviewed on zdnet and a couple of other places. Also apparently rated pretty well by some independent rating lab (can't remember which one).

I like it, but I agree that it would be more reassuring to see it more widely reviewed.

Question: Vipre 2013

For those interested in learning about the new vipre here we go

GFI Software is excited to announce the first public preview of the new VIPRE Antivirus 2013 and VIPRE Internet Security 2013. These products have added important new features and improvements in performance and enhanced security.
The following two products are available for beta testing:
VIPRE Antivirus 2013
VIPRE Internet Security 2013
Both products are version 6.0.5381, with installer version 6.0.1464.
What?s New

GFI focused in two areas for VIPRE 2013; first, broadening the scope of protection by including VIPRE Easy Update, and increasing our protection with a new anti-rootkit engine. The other key area is performance; users of VIPRE 2013 will notice improved performance browsing the web and faster scan times.
VIPRE Easy Update (Internet Security only)
Outdated software installed on PC?s is often exploited by malware. One of the best ways to ensure a secure experience is to keep the software on your computer up-to-date. Software vendors fix security issues with their software, and VIPRE Easy Update fetches those updates and applies them to your machine automatically. Easy Update will also let you know if Windows Update is not properly configured and will remedy that with a single click of a button.
Web Filter Improvements (Internet Security only)
The web filter in VIPRE 2013 has been improved to dramatically increase web browsing performance.
New Anti-Rootkit Technology
VIP... Read more

Answer:Vipre 2013

Improvements on Web Filter Improvements (Internet Security only) and the web filter in VIPRE 2013 has been improved to dramatically increase web browsing performance were a must.

However one of the draw backs its the Scan UI... Yet their UI improvements start off on:
VIPRE 2013 improves the main user interface in several places, including the Settings dialog box, additional menu options, improved links to GFI technical support, and shortcut keys to commonly accessed functionality.

I really hope they take some of the feedback into consideration.

So I was searching the internet and looked at VIPRE, I noticed that they are no longer developed by GFI but a company named ThreatTrack Security. GFI still exists but no longer lists VIPRE as a product.
Unless i'm living under a rock and didn't notice the news but I didn't hear about this until now.

Anyone have any thoughts about this?

Answer:Does VIPRE have a new developer?

GFI Software has spun out its Security Business Unit into a new, separate company called ThreatTrack Security.

I recently had a blue screen which was too quick to read, but I think I was upgrading Vipre at the time. Since then I get no Help Text in Vipre, just a list of topics or contents, nothing in the right-hand box.
Vipre took control and had a good go at it, but they say it's Win 7.
Any ideas how to fix please?
Pete

Answer:Vipre antivirus, no Help Text

Reboot or turn on the machine. As soon as you see your machine's name logo splash screen keep tapping F8. Go to "Advanced Options" or "Repair Computer" Select your language then "Repair Your Computer" An installation of Windows should be detected after that select "Next"

If that does not fix the issue repeat the steps above this time select "Other Options" then select "System Restore" Select a day or time before you installed Vipre.

For example "Vipre 10/04/2012 the Time. Let it run then reboot.

I installed Vipre Internet Security 2014 two days ago and removed Norton AV. Vipre is currently running. I just completed about four days of "fixes" with RPMurphy (BC) which was followed by the Vipre install/Norton removal. The thread for that problem is at: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/518865/infected-trojanagentgen-symmi-gen-zbot-unable-to-remove-with-sas-or-mbam. RPMurphy did a great job ! Everything was fine - for a little while. Slowly, the computer started acting a little weird, mouse is a little jumpy, sounds crackle a little bit and at times, stick (but not during a test), programs would take forever to open, processing became slower, and slower, and slower, etc. All the time, Vipre was running and no threats were detected. I actually haven't had much of a chance to even use the PC to allow another virus in the door! I have since verified the drivers for the mouse and sound card, ran chkdsk /f no problems were found. I also ran Ccleaner and cleaned up all the garbage that was still hiding out on the PC. Just now, I ran, Speccy (very latest version) and it indicates (under Operating System) that Norton AV is enabled and that ThreatSecurity (Vipre) is disabled! Is it possible that there is some sort of conflict occurring in these programs due to some portion of Norton that was not uninstalled? Could this be causing the fluctuating mouse, crackly speaker noises, etc? Since I just finished up virus removal with RPMurphy, I don't believe that this is a virus ... Read more

That only happens on the bigger type of scans. Some of the time they will work for the quick scans.Just recently i have been using the online Kaspersky scanner to check for any virus's....always been clean. It works, scans get completed. This Vipre mob also have "Counter Spy" which i have heard to be pretty at its job. Basically, i'm here to ask people who know about this kind of stuff----------Is It Any Good? Answer:VIPRE antivirus and rescue!

Hi:

https://www.vipreantivirus.com/

IIRC they trace their corporate lineage back to Sunbelt Software and its "Spysweeper" programs.
I have not personally used their products since those days, under XP.

I think their current products are cloud-based, with the inherent advantages and disadvantages thereof.

Others will have additional feedback, I'm sure.

Anyone ever use this?

Answer:Vipre antivirus prem.

I do, I have used vipre and upgraded to Vipre premium on all of my home machines. I bought the "all you can eat" version and it works well on my Windows 7 and XP machines. I even run it on my windows server 2008 (x32) version. I did turn off the option to check files when opened or copied as I believe that slows things down.

It seems to be very non intrusive and just sits there watching what I do. I have never had a virus or trojan, so far.

I am a small business consultant also, and have all of my clients with Vipre.

It is reasonable in price, especially for the "all you can eat" version for home use.

I don't have any financial interest just a satisfied customer.

I have Vipre Antivirus software on my computer, and it was given to me from a friend as he bought a lifetime program that was able to go onto 5 machines. I have never heard anything about it on the sites that compare it to anything else, so, am wondering as to how it compares to the most notable programs out there. Some times I do wonder if anything is getting through it. Thanks

I'm trying to decide which AV software to go to. I am torn between NOD32 and VIPRE, and while I know a lot of people who post on the forum have used NOD32, I am wondering if anybody has any experiences with VIPRE and would tell me some of the positives and negatives about the software so I can make a decision.

Answer:Looking for info about VIPRE Antivirus

Its crap it will eat your memory and slow your computer to a crawl eventually.... Every time I run into a customer with this AV one of its processes has a huge amount of page faults (memory leak) not to mention it has let viruses past it and that's the reason I am servicing their computers to begin with. ESET NOD 32 is your best bet if your paying for something personally I would recommend Microsoft Security Essentials and pay for the full version of MalwareBytes if you want to spend money this is the best route IMO.

I can't for the life of me find any real comparisons or up to date info on this (I have checked this forum the newest thread is from 09-11). I am seeking informed honest opinions by anyone who has used these 2 please. Question: Avira Versus Vipre

So at my place of employment, a computer repair shop catered to business, we as a company push Vipre products on our clients.

However, on a personal level very much dislike the program and think its installation is a pain, ability to kill it's processes from the task manager and its scanning process not that strong.

Coming here to MajorGeeks in this past month I came across Avira and have been testing it on the side and have been very happy with its results. Installation is simple, virus dectection (to my perspective) appears to be pretty strong and the use of the Rescue CD makes Avira a very powerful tool in my line of work.

what I want to know is, what do you guys think out of these two programs?

Do any of you share similar thoughts or is there any of you that disagree with me?

Answer:Avira Versus Vipre

I see very few systems using Vipre in the malware forums. Avira takes a much higher presence. You have to measure them by how well you like the interfaces and the easy of use. My vote would be for Avira. :major

Why won't VIPRE Internet Security work on my new windows, if it doesn't how do I return to my previous window. Please reply on my normal email address {removed PII}

Beatrice Salazar

Answer:VIPRE Internet Security

Hi,
Firstly, I would like to know whether the software works in your old Windows and the version of your new Windows and the way you installed the new Windows.
The VIPRE Internet Security is an 3rd party anti-virus software. You can have a try to solve it by following the steps below.

1. Check compatibility in Compatibility center.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibility/CompatCenter/Home
If it doesn?t compatibility or with no information, you?d better to contact the VIPRE Internet Security to confirm whether it is compatible with the new Windows and wait
for the updates of the software.

2. Because the virus often blocks the computer's ability to run antivirus programs, or causes those programs to be ineffective, so start the Windows in safe mode, and scan
the virus.
3. Uninstall the anti-virus software, and reinstall it again. Maybe the program file missed during the new Windows installation process.

Also, you can restore your computer from a system image backup. Refer the link below to know how to perform.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/restore-computer-from-system-image-backup#1TC=windows-7

Best Regards
Simon

I've been using Vipre for more than a year now, and haven't got any issues with it.
It's working great, running light and fast in the background, find couples of malware which superantispyware is missing and the firewall is much more easier to configure.

Just decided to try out Vipre for the 30 days since my fresh reformat of Win7 and no matter what, it will not update, hence function or turn on protection. It just sits at the update window doing nothing.

I thought this program was the be all and end all?

Answer:Vipre WILL NOT UPDATE OR FUNCTION

Had not heard of Vipre, so had to Google it to fine out more. Other then the normal BS stuff put out by Vipre itself was not able to fine anything about the application. Was it worth using prior to attempting to load it up on to Win 7. Been using MSE since it's release and nothing else. Always interested in something new.

Vipre keeps finding the trojan, but it can't seem to get rid of it. It's disabled the Windows firewall and is causing some redirects to sites like this.
Vipre finds Backdoor.Win32.ZAccess.dg (v), Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT and then the active scanner keeps stopping [email protected] (Trojan).

Answer:Vipre found a trojan

I tried following the directions under the thread, "How to remove a Trojan, Virus, Worm, or other Malware", but I didn't see any of the files using "Autoruns".

I did find the names and locations of two files using Vipre, but when I tried to find the first one, it didn't show and when I clicked on the second one, it disappeared immediately. Vipre noticed it, but I can't find any evidence that it's really gone.

I installed it but got an error saying that the driver is blocked due to compatibility. So i downloaded the beta version which is, according to Sunbelt, is Windows 7 compatible.
However, the protection seems to be disabled. I try to update but the update fails every time.

Any suggestions?
Dinesh.

Think I seen something about it in PCWorld or some other not so reliable source. Never seen it mentioned in any of the trusted anti-virii sources, did a little research and all I can seem to find are reports of it bogging down systems.

Answer:Vipre internet security

VIPRE Anti-virus, previously owned by GFI, is now developed by ThreatTrack Security Inc. but it was originally introduced in May 2010 by Sunbelt Counterspy...one of the early pioneers in anti-spyware protection with an outstanding reputation for years. Counterspy was officially discontinued a year later and customers were offered the option to switch to VIPRE Anti-virus supported by GFI.I have never personally used VIPRE. I have read it that it's blocking of malicious downloads was only adequate and that it's zero-day malware detection was below average. Generally if you're dealing with zero-day malware it's unlikely most anti-virus testing is going to detect anything since it takes time for new malware to be reported, samples collected, analyzed, and tested by anti-virus researchers before they can add a new threat to database definitions. The researchers at ThreatTrack Security need to show some improvement in these areas.

Detects 100 percent of WildList viruses with no false positives

Clearwater, FL — Dec 2, 2009 — Sunbelt Software, a leading provider of Windows security software, today announced that its VIPRE Antivirus + Antispyware product has received the VB100 award from Virus Bulletin, the highly-respected independent comparative testing group, in the December 2009 issue of its online publication.

The test was conducted on the Windows 7 platform and Sunbelt Software, in its first-ever entry into this prestigious test, successfully detected all "in the wild" viruses without creating a single false positive. Viruses are generally categorized as "in the wild" when they are spreading as a result of normal day-to-day operations on and between the computers of unsuspecting users. The outstanding level of malicious program detection recognizes the depth and accuracy of Sunbelt's VIPRE antivirus technology.

VIPRE Antivirus + Antispyware from Sunbelt Software Wins VB100 Award for Malware Detection on Windows 7 Platform

Hi.Does anybody know if it is okay to delete the contents of Events folder in Vipre anti virus software or any anti virus software.. Also is it okay to delete the downloaded files after they are installed by any of these anti virus software?-- Vipre has a folder named Downloads. Thank you so much..

Answer:info about Vipre AV security software

These folders are kept for 15 days by default, and deleted by Vipre on the 16th day.You can change the length of time in settings option's.Here is the link to the PDF user manual if you want to change anything:http://www.vipreantivirus.com/Docs/...The downloaded virus updates can also be removed once they have been installed, to help gain some space. Since each new update is all-inclusive, it is not necessary to retain earlier definition files. Please reply and let us know if our help worked. Your feedback helps others. Maybe you?

To purchase after the fully active 30 day Trial you have to go through HSN.

Please do not share this link outside of MalwareTips.
Notice the HSN in the link, this is an exclusive and a treat.

VIPRE Rescue Scanner description

A command-line utility that will scan and clean an infected computer
The VIPRE Rescue Scanner application was developed to be a command-line utility that will scan and clean an infected computer that is so infected that programs cannot be easily run.

The VIPRE Rescue Program is packaged into a self-extracting executable file (.exe) that prompts the user for an "unpack" or installation location, then starts the scanner and performs a deep scan. The user can start the program either by opening it via windows or from the command line.

Virus definitions are included, and the program is self-running once executed. The initial scan, and all subsequent scans, include Rootkit Detection. Four command line options are available, perform a deep scan, perform a quick scan, log the events, and disabling the rootkit.

Detections are consistent with the full VIPRE, and the VIPRE Rescue Program is designed to disinfect a system so infected that a user cannot install VIPRE.

Usage:
- If you are able, download the rescue program to the infected computer, otherwise download the VIPRE Rescue Program onto a USB drive or some other removable media.
- Plug the media into the infected computer.
- Navigate to the directory that contains the VIPRE Rescue Program.
- Double-click on VIPRERescue6701.exe
- At the prompt, "Do you wish to extract the VIPRE Rescue Scanner to your computer?" click Yes.
- You will be prompted for a... Read more

I have been having issues with my Dell XPS 15 crashing when I have Vipre Antivirus open. I attempted to change the settings on my vipre program a couple of weeks ago and the computer screen freezed. I was forced to reboot my computer b/c I was not able to get out of this program with CTRL-ALT-Delete. I thought I might have malware on my computer so, I downloaded Malwarebytes and booted my computer in Safe Mode with Networking and Malwarebytes did not find anything wrong. I checked to see whether I updated everything, and all the updates for Windows, Adobe, etc... have been done. I had Dell check my hardware on my computer and everything passed. Therefore, I tried troubleshooting the problem with Microsoft and they no solutions for this problem.? I have noticed strange things happening to my computer. For instance, I loose my network connection periodically or certain programs have disappeared in my start menu ? Also, my computer has been slow at times when I am scanning with vipre. Can you help me ?

Hello,

I am new to this forum and I see that you have helped with similar problems as I have, so I hope you can help me too.

My VIPRE software recently detected a Rootkit on my computer (Rootkit.MBR.Sst.a) that cannot be cleaned or quarantined.

I am not really noticing any problems with the computer other than it may be a little slower than normal and getting a lot of SPAM emails.

I had a trojan virus on this computer several weeks ago that VIPRE support helped me remove using MalwareBytes' and maybe this was something that was not removed from then? Not sure.

I'm hoping you can help get rid of this.

As per your Preparation Guide I have run the Defogger program.

I have tried to run the DDS program a few different times and the program starts running fine and the "######" start apprearing, but after about 3-4 minutes it seems to stall and freezes. If I leave it the screen goes black and then I have to manually shut the computer off by holding down the ON button (Toshiba Satellite) until the computer shuts off. So, I am unable to save a DDS.txt or attach.txt log files.

I was able to run the GMER program and the Ark.txt file is attached.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Jim

Good evening. Download OTL by OldTimer from here and save it to your Desktop. Double click the tool to run it. Click the Quick Scan button and allow it to do it's thing. Once complete, it should open two Notepad Windows - OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt It should also save copies in the same location as OTL. I want you to copy and paste the contents of OTL.txt that should appear into one reply and Extras.Txt into another. The length of the two logs sometimes results in the end being chopped off if you post both in one reply.

I'm just curious if the reviews of Vipre Antivirus and Vipre internet Security latest version (I use Internet Security) are true?  I have not had any issues with it, though I have had to disable the firewall's web filtering module (they call it bad web site blocking) because it blocks too many legitimate web sites and prevents some of my games and software from updating properly.  But I'm wondering, why in one review, was Vipre's firewall called a "paper tiger"?  Is it really that bad at blocking incoming connections?  I'm curious if any live testers have found anything with the current version of Vipre; how good is it really?  I mean, I don't have to worry that much for whenever I end up on a bad web site, it's always a typo and not intentional, but still, one never knows when their favorite legit site will be cracked and broken into.  Thanks for any feedback.  I like Vipre for everything that I have tested, anytime it's said it has blocked something, that something was actually blocked.  Firewall wise, this would normally be a legit application trying to get through the firewall, and I denied it once, and it actually did what it's supposed to do, though I've never tried an exploit running in a virtual machine with it though.  And then the on access module once blocked a fake firefox downloader from installing.  What have you guys found?  Should I be using a different security product?  Especially with a server?... Answer:Vipre: used on my laptop and server, but is it actually good?

Hi -
Vipre was always (in my opinion) among the better Antivirus programs, but I find from all of the latest "reviews" that it seems to have slipped slightly from its highest rankings. The "reviewers" still list it in the top dozen or so, but "reviewers" come and go.

Kaspersky is in the top few now (as always), and cost-wise may be a better option, even though you purchase a 3 year subscription.

From current "reviews", there are several changes to what I would personally use, but the "review" playing field always seems tilted towards a few programs that may not always be as independantly assessed, as we would wish for -

Just my opinions -

I had a user come to me with an x86 Vista Enterprise system that wouldn't launch Internet Explorer. Didn't find any running malicious processes initially. Ran registry fix to rebuild exe and IE file associations. Ran full scans with current copies of MalwareBytes and VIPRE Rescue. Initially, both came back with a number of infections, but second scan with MBAM came up clean. Second and subsequent scans with VIPRE Rescue came back listing 8 threat traces, but zero cleaned. I just want someone to look over my shoulder on this one. This is the first time I've ever come up against something that wasn't COMPLETELY knocked out by MBAM and VIPRE Rescue.

DDS, GMER, and full HJT log files are below. I have Attach.txt created by DDS, but have not included it yet. Thanks in advance for looking:
