Application slow when run from a specific path

Question: Application slow when run from a specific path

Hello,
I have encountered an issue on one Windows 7 Enterprise x64 machine. An Application is slower by the factor of about 10 when run from a specific path. If i remove a space from the path it is normally fast. If I add it back the application is slow again.
What could be the issue here?
Thank you in advance, best regards
Edit:
I realized that I prematurely asked this question and there probably is a really good reason for this. I should first try to investigate with the Visual Studio Performance tools.

Preferred Solution: Application slow when run from a specific path

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Everyone,
What I want to accomplish is to run the program "InstallShield" only with a specified user.
So Basically DENY TO EVERYONE (admins, users, ... ) and ALLOW to the specified user.
I've tryied to create a Deny rule to everyone and an allow to specified user rule but isn't working.
Pheraps it checks the deny rule first and if it's true it stop checking.
Is there a way to allow only my SA user to be able to run Installshield and to deny access to the app to everyone else?

Hi!

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me out - I am trying to download a game but each time I do, my PC says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." and deletes the file right as it finished downloading. I have admin rights on my PC and I just can't figure out what the problem is.

Any help would be great - I have tried youtube and google but they all keep telling me I need admin rights and I have them already =\

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know how to change the printserver path on a client machine? (not the server)

Thanks

Answer:Changing path of printserver for specific machine from client?

What do you mean? Can't that machine just access the print server directly, install the printer, and print? For example, at work, the client access \\print which lists all the printers currently available on the print server, and install the ones he needs.

Hey all!

So for the last year or so there's been a virus on my PC, but as I don't use my PC as much as my laptop I didn't notice it, until my brother complained about it...

So here's the problem...

Whenever I open a file such as Computer, or Control Panel it comes up with this error: windows cannot access the specific device, path  or file. you may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item

I believe .exe opens because my younger brothers can manage to open up Minecraft and other games they have... I usually access the main files by opening notepad and clicking load and looking through files I may need... So if you need any other info I'll be checking this thread every 10-5 minutes or so.

I rally need help ASAP as I need my computer in a bout a week so any help will be appreciated... I know my way around a computer and have tried a load of stuff with no success... using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

When trying to open up ANY folder in windows explorer or when trying to access Control Panel, I get the error message: Windows cannot access the specific device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access them.

Many solutions to this involve Control Panel, which I can't access...a catch-22.

I cannot do a System Restore, the error: System Restore does not appear to be functioning correctly on this system (though I have done several successful system restores in the past on this computer)

Windows 2000 on 2 year old E Machine. Problem just started, yesterday. Whenever I click on some , but not all, of my shortcuts on desktop,, I will get a pop-up window that says, " Windows cannot access the specific device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to acceess this item ." A couple of shortcuts I can open & they work fine. My e mail program, Outlook Express, & Mailwasher, will not work at all. I, also, just noticed that I get the same message window, whenever I try to open some functuions of my computer, such as uninstall programs,,, system restore, & MANY others. I have checked & downloaded all updates, scanned & scanned for viruses, etc., but don't see anything. It will not allow me to even open up the " Hijack this" results , I just downloaded. Spybot keeps showing wrong application paths for my Registry. I have tried to repair or set a new path, but no luck. Everythings seems to work okay, so should I remove the items Spybot finds, and restore them if there is a problem on down the road?

I've done some searches on the files, all of which are execution files, and discovered some of them may be spyware, but applications may not work correctly if I remove them. Could these be leftovers from previous scans/deletions.

These are associated with HP:
matcli.exe, mad.exe, MotiveDirectory.exe.

Minstall.exe is may have to do with my on-board modem, but a search shows I don't even have the file. How can there be a wrong path to a file that doesn't exist?

I have no idea what mpbtn.exe is associated with and it was not found in a search either.

wb32.exe is associated with Net Meeting which I never use and MsoHtmEd.exe is associated with Office.

Any help/advice would be appreciated, but please keep it fairly simple.....as that is what I am associated with. I know I shouldn't end a sentence with a preposition, but it sounds so awkward any other way, besides it's okay here in Texas.

Thanks,
Randall

Path to .exe is not a valid Windows application - error message.

All files seem to have disappeared (showing in remove programs but not under start folder) and i cannot run any programs. I've even tried running regedit to have a look at the registry thinking that it may be a worm thats causing the problem but again i get the error message.

Can anyone advise on how i go about getting an anti-virus and malwarebytes to run on the system (tried connecting through a USB but with no luck).

I have strange problem.

On my computer some application works with one internet connection ( ISP ) and some through other internet connection ( ISP )

This problem has started since last few days.*

I flush dns and did most common solutions found on net like changing TCP/IP but nothing worked.

Is there any way to get rid off from this error ?

Or is there any way we can combine BOTH wireless internet connection in one PC and make some settings that which application works with which internet connection ( ISP )

I have 2 wireless internet dongles and I have 2 dongles which I can attach to my PC to connect to this internet dongles.

I read about Bridge connection and i did it but this didn't solved the error. May be because I am not able to make settings which application uses which internet connection

PLEASE NOTE, I am not having problem in browsing website. I am having PROBLEM in installed application, like stock market trading software.

I tried disabling antivirus also, but nothing worked.

I have been trying to diagnose a particular problem where applications freeze for a split 2-3 seconds at random intervals. I really hope that someone might be able to provide some suggestions as I am starting to pull my hair out with this.

For example, I could be running the following programs:
Google Chrome
VLC Movie Player
Skype
Playng TERA Online.

While playing Tera (current active program) and watching a movie on VLC. VLC will freeze for a few seconds (at random) and then continue, while the game I'm playing does not freeze at all.

Another scenario:
Mozilla Firefox
Quicktime Player
MS Office - Excel
While reading a webpage in Firefox (current active program) and listening to music with quicktime, as I scroll through the webpage the browser will freeze and become unresponsive for 2-3 seconds. Meanwhile the music playing in Quicktime has not missed a single beat.

List of attempted fixes:Checked Event Viewer(Applications) for errors, none found.
Adjusted Virtual Memory/Paging file from 8162MB to an Initial size of 16324/Max 32648
Ran stress test (passmark) To check if I could isolate the freezing during certain tests. (Did not lock up at all after running 5 tests)
Used Windows Error checking (CHKDSK) on physical drive to check for errors (none found in Event Viewer)
Updated GPU to latest driver version (v301.42)

Answer:directory path in application save not found in windows explorer

ProgramData is a protected system folder and is by default hidden. To show it you must either enable showing hidden system files and folders as told in this tutorial, or for a quick one time access type %ProgramData% in Explorer address bar and press Enter:
Doing this shows the content of the ProgramData folder even though the folder remains hidden.

Hi and welcome to Seven Forums.

I do not think this is possible to do I would think they would interfere with each other.

EDIT: The only way to do this would be to have them connecting to different networks (eg. 192.168.1.1 for wired - then 192.168.2.1 for wireless)

I have a command line utility for some purpose. I start this utility from a COM DLL using ShellExecuteEx function. When calling ShellExecuteEx, i specify the lpVerb parameter as "runas" so that the utility is started elevated. I call
the COM Interface function from an exe client on its startup. So when i start the client exe, the utility is also started. My problem is that since the utility is started elevated, it always asks for the UAC confirmation prompt. I can't stand this because
there will be no manual intervention during this process. So I need the utility to be started without showing the UAC prompt, but still elevated when i start the client exe. Is there any way to achieve this? I would prefer some changes done within the utility
itself like changing the manifest file rather than some system settings changes. Any help will be appreciated..

Hello,

I have an application, that has fairly small fonts and no option to increase the font size.
So I thought, that maybe there is a way to zoom the window of that application on the
screen!!
I quickly found several apps, promising to aid in doing that, but soon my disappointment
was quite big, as they were zooming the entire screen (and I couldn't see the entire window
of a maximized application, which I have open in parallel) or just an area around the mouse
or I had to specify which coordinates on the screen to zoom (how annoying can that be ?!?).
And I wasn't able to find an app, which would just say - click on the window you want me to
zoom in to and that's all...
Please kindly help me !! Thanks!

Answer:How to zoom a specific application's window ???

Welcome darkman088 to the forum.
Try this.

Start Orb and type in magnifier. You will get Windows built in magnifier.

I use it a lot. I use a selected button on my mouse to activate it when needed.
You can adjust the magnification from 100% to over 1000% but not much else.

It magnifies the whole page.

Hi,

I have been OK with Windows XP on my old P4 PCs 2GB RAM (standalone No Internet) that I use for basic word processing and Photo Editing (mainly with FastStone Image Viewer FastStone Image Viewer - Powerful and Intuitive Photo Viewer, Editor and Batch Converter), but would like to upgrade to Windows 10 for more software options.
Am starting to do my homework and just read "Windows 10: Which version of Windows is best for my old Dell Latitude D620 laptop" https://www.tenforums.com/general-support/78010-version-windows-best-my-old-dell-latitude-d620-laptop-2.html
I was encouraged when read Fafhrd 's PC system specs and noticed "CPU: Intel socket 775 Pentium 4 540 HT 3200 Prescott " which is similar to mine.
For Windows XP I have found "Mini WinXP" that comes with Hiren's 15.2 Hiren's BootCD Fan & Discussion Platform on a bootable USB drive to be the fastest for many things.
Does anyone know if there is anything similar for Windows 10?
If not any suggestions for reducing Windows 10?
Thanks

In Win XP, is there a way to force an application to use a specific connection while everything else uses a different connection? Here’s what I’d like to be able to do:

I connect from home to work via Verizon Broadband and Nortel VPN to access a secure LAN with shared drives and services, including intranet applications. This is already in place and working fine. The work LAN firewall is configured to block all Internet browsing attempts for all devices connected via VPN – not necessarily for security reasons, but rather to conserve bandwidth. The VPN switch and firewall share the same router and broadband connection, so incoming Internet requests from home through the VPN would go back out of the firewall – effectively doubling the required bandwidth for each request.

This configuration renders embedded Internet links in email and various documents almost useless. There are two choices at present to affect a workaround.

One is to drop the VPN connection when Internet browsing is required; browse to the Internet; and then reestablish the VPN connection after the Internet browsing is complete. This is cumbersome and inefficient at best, but it does work.

The second is to configure the VPN client to use split tunneling. This works too, but puts additional load on the Verizon Broadband connection between home and office (already the slowest link in the path). Also, this option meets with resistance from our network folks for reasons I won’t go into here.

What I’d li... Read more

Answer:Can I force an application to use a specific network in XP?

The whole point of the VPN is to insure a secure channel into the remote computer. You drill a hole a truck could drive through if you actually allow Internet connections while the VPN is connected!

The ability to have multiple connections is normally configured by the VPN host, and I suspect your company would take a really dim view of you compromising their network for your convenience.

This is a question concerning anonymity and maintaining privacy. I can use a proxy server, http or socks, and that shows I am connecting from another address than my home IP. However, some sites also track things like browser language and time zone. Language I can simply change by using an English version of my browser rather than a Swedish one, but what about the time zone? Even if I connect through say a US proxy, it will show my time zone as central European.

The question: Is there any way to either prevent the time zone from being detected through the web, or change the time zone which is displayed? I know I can of course just change the time zone of my system but I'd rather not as it will mess up logs and such. If there is another way of doing it, either with what utilities are in place or by additional software, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks in advance.

(User doesn't have change from the default printer to Printer 1 when print options screen comes up. It is already set. )

All other applications print to Printer 2 (the default printer).

Thanks in advance.

I have an IR receiver constantly attached to my computer. One program I use always registers it as a game controller, and stops me from using my actual game controllers in favor of it. Is it possible to automate disabling the IR receiver while the program runs, and re-enabling it after the application closes?

Answer:Is it possible to disable a device while a specific application runs?

Hi, if you know or can find a command to disable it, you can write a simple Autohotkey script- for example, a loop that periodically tests to see if your game is running, and if so, disable the device.

(Autohotkey is free and well supported- it can be programmed to test for the presence of a particular process in 1 line).

Probably 5 lines would suffice.

It comes with a comprehensive help file, detailing each command with examples.

AutoHotkey Beginner Tutorial

Or you could create a shortcut to a script that
a. launches the game
and
b. disables the device and exits when you choose.

I have a laptop on my desk just for testing external access issues to our sites. I'd rather not.

I know it's been asked.. I think I've read over 20 posts on it with no clear and simple solution.

On my windows7 x64 station I have a hard wired LAN Network Connection and a USB wireless network conection. If both are up, IE uses the wired Lan connection. If I disable that LAN connection, IE uses the wireless. Great.. but?

What If I want to have both up? Reading emails and and accessing other intranet resources normally, but surfing via the wireless. Or even better, surfing from a specific browser or instance of a browser through the wireless Connection, and all others using activity through the wired Lan connection?

I'd like to do this without a Proxy or a VM. I understand there is a product called ForceBindIP that sounded very promising, but it does not support Windows 7 yet.

Is there maybe a firewall setting to route port 80 and 443 traffic to a specific Lan connetion? How about tweaking setting of the wired lan connection so that it fails to find DNS servers or anything on the outside?

I'm somewhat surprised this is not a setting somewhere already. I see great value having this.

Thanks.

Cisco has a software that can do this but I'm not familor with it and don't know much about it,you might even need a Cisco router to use the software.

Hello,

I use Tunngle to game online through LAN, and it uses a service named TnglCtrl.exe which uses 10mb of memory idle. Even though when I am not using Tunngle, it starts. If i close the service, Tunngle will refuse to run. So I would like to know if it is possible to do the following:

In Services, I set TnglCtrl.exe to Manual startup. When I would like to start the Tunngle application, TnglCtrl.exe would start automatically. Is this possible?

Thanks,
Slasher

Answer:Starting a specific service when opening an application

Just have it on all the time...10 MBs of RAM is absolutely NOTHING.
You have way to much RAM to be concerned over this.

Hi,

I have had repeated BSOD with message (DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION) on a Lenovo E550 running Win 10 Pro 6 bit (upgraded from win 8.1pro 64). It occurred:
1. on sleeping, and
2. seemingly randomly. i.e. with applications open, idle with no applications open

I seem to have got around (1) by unchecking the "Turn on fast startup" option in Power Options. but the BSOD continues to occur at other times.

I have used the Lenovo System update tool to update the drivers it can but have reached the limit of my current capabilities/knowledge so am looking for some help interpreting the dump files and troublshooting

Per BSOD posting instructions I've run the utility and attached the zip file to the post.

Thanks for any advice/direction.

hi
there is an application that communicates with remote server. it connects to the server and the user selects the records/files (txt or tif files) it then starts downloading them.

the issue with it is that this application works from home or non company internet. but it doesnt works on company network.

i want to investigate whats stoping it.

it can successfully login to the server and shows the files needed to be downloaded. and it sometimes does starts downloading . but it fails midway through files.

we are behind a tmg.

and tmg client is working but no success with it.

so i want some application to be installed on that particular pc on which the application is not working .(again it works if non company internet is used). that should just monitor the packets sent and received by that application..

wireshark is too complicated.. and displays all packets flying by.

how can i corelate the packets shown in wire shark to that specific program ?

any other alternative ?

or how to tackle the issue with this particular app? that is what i want to solve.

update:
that application uses http to download data .

Answer:monitor the traffice sent and received by one specific application

Start with Process Monitor. It will not show you the packets, but it might provide a clue.

I have tried several personal firewalls and have yet to find one of the free ones that will allow you to set firewall rules that allow only a specific ip or ip's to connect to a specific application. Most only have a trusted ip list.

Online Armor has this functionality but not for the free version.

I dont recall whether comodo has this ability but I did not like that comodo would have several outbound connections even when I did not have anything that should be connected out to the internet (something to do with cloud?).

Answer:Firewall that blocks application connect to specific ip?

It seems that the Windows' built-in firewall might be able to do what you're after by creating a new custom rule.

Whenever I try to open a PDF file, I get the message that there is a problem with my Adobe Acrobat Reader. After clicking OK, I keep getting this message:

Windows cannot access the specific device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

which is under the heading of:

C:\Documents and Settings\Alfio\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5JII7HDM?

The letters & numbers at the end (after "Content.IE5\" are not always the same.

I've installed and uninstalled the newest version of Acrobat, but still get the same result.

Someone suggested using a different program instead of Adobe's, which I will probably do, but I'm more concerned with the idea that the problem is related to my registry.

I also cannot download the Adobe Flash Player, so maybe it is just an issue with Adobe programs on my computer, but this only started happening after I had to get rid of some viruses on my computer. Everything else seems to be fine, with no more virus problems, but I don't know how to go about dealing with this permission issue.

Thank you.

Again, use the arrow keys to select Microsoft Windows XP.Hit Enter.Your computer will proceed to booting into Safe Mode. During the boot process, you may see random code go past your screen. Simply wait for it to pass. Your computer should boot like usually, except with Safe Mode written in the corners of your screen. Your screen may also appear to be a different size because the video drivers are not loaded properly in Safe Mode. After the boot, you will be asked whether you wish to use system restore, or to continue to Safe Mode. Select OK to choose Safe mode.Additional instructions on booting into Safe Mode can be found here

As the title indicates, I'd like to restrict the amount of bandwidth or internet access speed of a specific application on my PC. Preferably during certain times only, but even a way to enable and disable this rule as I need would be fine.

I have a 1Mb ADSL with a measly 3GB monthly cap (it's painful, can't afford more at the moment though), and Steam turns out to be the nastiest, bloated, deceptive, sneaky, bandwidth-whor........<a while later>........ piece of software ever released to the world at large.

So, I keep setting all my games to "Do not update automatically" (which needs to be re-set after each time a game is run), and it supposedly doesn't download updates or patches while a game is being played... Despite this, if I decide to play Borderlands, after launching the game I have to alt-tab into Windows, go to Steam, and pause the next "Suspended" 250MB or 300MB update that it's busy downloading... I may have a slow connection by most of your standards, but at a pretty constant 100KB/s, 3GB isn't exactly going to last me that long.

Now, I do have a service from my ISP that gives me 5 times my download cap between 1am and 5am (more info, if you like).. So I can get a theoretical 15GB a month if I play my cards right. Is there any firewall out there that will allow me to limit the access speed of Steam to 5KB/s or 10KB/s during specific times...?

Hello Mialbedwy, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could use the same method of pinning the Recycle Bin to the taskbar in a folder as a toolbar, but use the application you want instead of the Recycle Bin. This will give it a wider space.

Hello,

I am writing this because I am seeking help with an Email related issue.

I am trying to use a program that retrieves Inbound Email attachments and resends them to a new destination… it is a dispatch program.

The Help Files associated with this program make reference to “The Attachment Folder” from “My Email Program”.

I am currently using Microsoft Outlook 2000 as my Email program although… I also have Outlook Express as an optional email program that I could use.

I would prefer to stay with Outlook 2000 though…
“if possible”.

I am enclosing an excerpt from the “Help” File associated with this program so you can see their exact reference to an “Attachment Folder from my Email Program”.

I have tried contacting The Program Manufacturers Tech. Support but as yet have not heard back from them.

I am looking for any advice or direction to be able to Locate and Identify this “Attachments Folder” in “my Email Program” that they make reference to.

If you can assist or advise me in any way I would appreciate it very much, as I am completely lost as to what to do next.

My Operating System is Windows 98SE.

Thank You
Respectfully

Greetings everyone.  I've been dealing with this annoyance for two years.  I've been in contact with the support staff for the application, and have tried everything suggested, but the issue still stands.

The application is League of Legends.  The issue is when the game tries to launch lolclient.exe, I get this error: "Unable to connect to the server.  If you have a firewall, it may be blocking the connection.  Please refer to your firewall's documentation.  Would you like to retry the connection?"

If I click "Retry," I'm stuck on a black screen for ~30 seconds and then it loads successfully.  Sometimes it waits for ~30 seconds, prompts the error again, and then it's successful.  It always eventually succeeds, but it takes a while to get there.  Besides using a VPN and replacing hardware, I've tried literally everything suggested by the community and the staff.  All necessary ports are forwarded and confirmed as open.  I do not experience any persistent network issues besides this one.

I know that it's not actually related to my firewall for two reasons: 1. it happens on ANY computer on the network, regardless of software.  If I use the computer on another network, it connects immediately, and 2. I've completely uninstalled my firewall software, disabled Windows Defender, and ensured that all firewall-related services were stopped.  The router's internal firewall is disabled. &#... Read more

Hello,
I have several versions of an application (Adobe After Effects) installed (I help test out prerelease versions of the software - which is nice) and I'd like to be able to set the precise application / file type association.

If I get a file's properties and 'Change...' the 'Opens with:' and browse to the exact application I want it to open with (After Effects version 13.6x123), then Apply/OK it, when I open the file, it just loads up the oldest version of the app (After Effects version 13.2) that Windows can find. Is there a better way to set filetype associations than the broken method that Windows is clearly attempting to use?

I have four versions of this app currently installed, all in C:\Program Files\Adobe. 90% of the time, I want to use the latest version, but occasionally need to use an older (public release) version to check how certain bugs/behaviours have changed, so need to keep all those versions installed.

I can use the workaround of opening the specific app and File > opening the file from within it, but it would be nice if I could get Windows to behave properly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

In Windows 7, the input method is application-specific, i.e., when you change the input method in one application, it doesn't affect other applications. However, in Windows 8 this seems to be changed: the input method is system-wide.

The problem is: I need to use Chinese input (either the embedded Windows Chinese input, or the one from Google, I prefer to use the later), which seems to only use US keyboard layout. However, I am using Finnish layout, so the locations of symbol keys are different. I need to frequently switch the input methods, which is really annoying. I really miss the one in Windows 7: the Chinese input was only effective for the application I needed to type Chinese

Hi,
I downloaded a bespoke appn from a site called www.bobbooks.co.uk that allows you to put together your own pictures into specific book types and they then produce a proper coffee table stylebook, ideal for wedding pictures etc.

But for some reason as soon as I open the application it is trying to connect to the internet to check for updates as it is supposed to do and it cannot reach the server it's trying to. Similarly if you try and manually update it this happens.

I have allowed it as an exception in Windows Firewall so other thought is it's something to do with my router settings. Any suggestions? I can't understand why this would be the case though because AVG, Spybot, Adaware etc etc have never given me a problem like this and I've never had to manually configure my router in any way (it's a fairly standard Netgear one.)

I tried installing the same software at work and it worked straight away, so clearly it is something to do with my setup at home. Sigh....

I contacted Bob's Books and they said they've never had this problem before. And with the best will in the world they are not techies.

Any suggestions greatfully received as the (new) wife is hassling me to get it sorted so she can sort the wedding and honeymoon pictures out. Whoever said married life would be all bliss....

thanks,
Jonathan

In the classic Control Panel, find "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" ans scroll all the way down. Is NNTP listed under protocols?

I've looked around quite a bit on both this forum and Google and can't seem to find an answer, so if this has been answered before, please forgive me and be so kind as to provide a link to a relevant topic.

I am using a TiddlyWiki stored on a USB flash drive. What I would like to do is set a parameter on the shortcut so that it always launches with a specific portable browser, also stored on the pen drive, rather than the defauly browser that is stored on the computer it is attached to.

Likewise, I have a few PDFs that I use regularly between machines, and would like to have them open using a portable PDF reader (Sumatra) which is also stored on the flash drive. That way, the PDF will always open to my last saved page, regardless of which machine I am using.

The computers I use are a home desktop PC (Win 7), home netbook (Win XP) and work laptop (Win XP).

If there is a different way to achieve this without using shortcut parameters, I would be more than happy to give it a whirl.

Cheers!
Matt

Erm hi. Last night my PC was absolutely fine, and today it seems to be completely broken.

I turned the computer on today and received a "malware detected" message from Avast antivirus. I tried to move to chest/delete and the message kept popping up. I looked up NewDot malware on the internet (which is what Avast was detecting) and it said that NewDot prevents access to the internet, which seemed about right as i was having to use my laptop to access the internet as the time, because the other computer wasn't working properly. It said that i could get rid of it easily my going to Add/remove programs and uninstalling it, which i did.

After this i restarted the computer and the loading time was exceptionally slow, i thought it had frozen, but it was just taking 5-10minutes to load. When it finally did load i tried to access the internet through a number of different browsers, but none of them would load. I tried to open some other applications too, and they wouldn't load either. I went to msconfig and disabled the majority of my startup items, and then restarted the computer. Once again the loading time was slow, and no applications would start. I then tried to do a defrag, but the program didn't work. Then i tried system restore, and the application didn't load, i came back to the computer 5-10minutes later and it had loaded, but it came up with an error that said something along the lines of "system restore is unable to protect your computer, please restar... Answer:Slow boot, slow application loading, slow shutdown

I don't know if there's an edit option on this site, but i couldnt find it.

Anyway, i've found a website dedicated to this newdot "foistware" as it is known: http://www.cexx.org/newnet.htm

It says that deleting the .dll will result in a broken internet connection. IT also mentions that sometimes uninstalling it will still leave errors in winsock.
This seems to be what has happened to me, so i'm going to try the LSP fix utility available for download on that site. The problem is that this laptop has no floppy disk drive, and i don't have a UBS storage device available.

I was just wondering, if and when i do repair the LSP problems, could that be what is causing my system to run slowly? I hope so.

Thanks again.

Can someone please help me analyse this log? It appears that I had the Virtumonde virus which spyboy detected and VundoFix virus (which Avast detected and removed as I reboot) since last Wednesday, May 14th, there was no system restore date available at the time so since then I've run Spybot, Spydoctor, Avast, cleaned out startup, removed useless programs, ran diskcleanup and defrag, xspy and still my applications (especially MoZILLA & INTERNET EXPLORER) are crawling at startup and I don't understand why?? I am trying to save all my files instead of reinstalling Windows XP. Hello southflgirl,We need to create a Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) Log Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) from one of the links below and save to your Desktop. Primary Mirror Secondary Mirror DSS will do the following: 1. Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista. 2. Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives. 3. Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review. 4. Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using Deckard's System Scanner. 1. Close all applications and windows. 2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts. 3. If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious. 4. When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad: main.txt <-- Will be maximized extra.txt <-- Will be minimized 5. If not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder. 6. Please copy (<Control>+C) and paste (<Control>+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply. Note: When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that DSS is trying to access the Internet; espec... Read more

Using Outlook (I think it is 2007 version). At some stage I have tried to export files and back up, but unsuccessfully.
As a result every time I load Outlook it takes an age closing windows which flag up H:\backup.pst as being an invalid path. Outlook does load eventually but takes a long time.
Can I rectify this?

In Windows 7, will a long system PATH environment variable slow down the system in any noticeable/tangible way?

My system PATH variable is 45-entries deep. I have an i7 930 @ 4.2GHz, but out of general curiosity, I'm wondering if this long variable may be slowing things down. Would this mean that Windows has to continually scan those 45 entries/folders?

Answer:Would a longer PATH environment variable slow down a system?

I can't imagine this being a problem, no.

Coldblackice said:

Certainly not continuously, no. If something is looking for a file without a full path (like say, Java.exe), it will scan, but it will only scan until it finds what it's looking for.

Help Appreciated.

In a Windows 8 PC, User account is "Standard" and Administrator account is different, in which how can I exclude some application which is from asking administrator password to execute?
My situation is specially for application updates such as java and/or adobe reader. Each time, when there is an update, it is asking administrator password to run the same.
Kindly assist.

Answer:Exclude specific application execution in "Standard User"

Hello Anil, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Normally you could use an option in the tutorial below to prevent standard "users" from being able to run a specific file.

Applications - Prevent Running Specified Programs - Windows 7 Help Forums

However, in this case, the user isn't the one running the application. The applications are set to automatically check for updates, so they're running themselves instead. If you turn off the check for updates automatically option in the java and Adobe programs, it should stop this. You will of course need to manually check for updates afterwards every so often though.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi,

I installed a new SSD for one of the employee in my office. I installed win 8.1 pro. installation all was fine.

But now the specific user, when he logins to the Computer, it is very slow for him. Even right click pop up menu is also taking 5 seconds to load. His excel files in the network is also taking lot of time to open and work. Most of the resources are taking
time to load.

However in the same PC if I login as administrator the computer flies. It has no lag and working properly.

He tried login in another PC and has no issues. Only in this PC hes problem.

I have updated the updates, drivers. Antivirus is also installed.
He was using HDD before. His PC was already slow. That is why i installed an SSD for him.

I keep all my movies on that drive and copying them to that drive rather than one of the others is extremely slow, especially when using ConvertXtoDVD, it converts at 0.05x instead of about 1.3x which i used to get before...tried reverting to old settings, everything.I have tested the drives in Sisoft Sandra and the difference in drives is staggering, the HDS722540VLAT20 averages around 50MB/s and the Quantum Fireball about 16MB/s ConvertXtoDVD used to convert movies from this drive at full speed about 4 days ago...so why the change now?the other wierd thing is, I have checked the Forums and found most of peoples problems like this are because of the drive switching into "PIO" mode...I have checked this and it is at UDMA 5 as it always has been in fact all of them are apart from the DVD R/W which operates at UDMA 4Any insight is appreciated KurtisEdit: Just got told by a friend to run a disk defra... My Toshiba Tecra laptop 8100 with XP is Slow/Slow/Slow!

When turning on, it takes 5 to 10 minutes to settle down. Once it stops grinding and I try to start any application -- such as Internet Exployer, it takes another 5 to 10 minutes. I have Nortons 360 and another anti-virus application that gives me the indication that all is O.K. How can I speed this machine up.

All,

I have windows XP64 and ever since my new video cards were installed (I am pretty sure it may have to do with them) I have had problems with my logins to administrator users to be really slow and sometimes never make it to the desktop. I have updated all of the video card drivers for XP64 and nothing is helping.

System Specs:
XP64
AMD Athlon 4200+ dual
2.21 Ghz
4 GB RAM

Video:
2 - NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT in SLI

CD ROMs:
TSSTCorp CD/DVDW SH-S182M
2nd drive is also a TSSTCorp, but it having issues also, which could be part of the problem (currently disconnected)

HD:
WDC WD360ADFD-00NLR1 (I think this one is a 36GB High Speed Drive)
WDC WD800BB-00CAA1 (75 GB slower backup drive)

Audio:
External USB Creative Soudblaster 24 bit

Keyboard/Mouse:
Logitech MX5000 setup (bluetooth)

I can give more information on login logs etc if needed. I just defraged C drive, so I can see if that helped anything. Please respond to help me fix this issue.

Thanks everyone,

I have a folder on my external harddrive that I have about 60GB worth of movies stored in. About a week ago I noticed that when I would try to open it, it would take a long time to load; I was and still am getting the green loading ribbon at the top. I can usually fix problems like this myself but this one has me stumped.

I have tried:
multiple virus/malware scans (all clean)
multiple sweeps with CCleaner
disk cleanup for the drive
defragging the entire drive the folder is in
turning off indexing
turning off thumbnails within the folder
changing the view to details; with no icons at all
using the classic folder view
changed folder template from Videos and Photos to All Items
also ran regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

and there are probably a few other things I've tried over the past week with no luck at all. When I open the folder, it consistently takes over a minute to load everything. This is really getting on my nerves now, does anybody have any ideas or fixes for this? If its any help I started using Microsoft Security Essentials over AVG around the time it started doing this.

Vista Home Premium SP2 32-bit

Answer:Specific folder loading very slow

Disable MSE and try then - just to make sure it is not MSE that causes the problem. Opening any 60GB folder on an external is of course a challenge.

I have recently noticed wireless network problems with one of my computer; I'm getting something like 4-6 Mbps of download speed according to Speedtest.net, when I should be getting at least 5x that. I have two other computers connected to the network, and they both get 30-40 Mbps, so it is this machine in particular. The problem persists independently of which browser I'm using, and running an AV scan didn't pick anything up.

I don't have any ideas for what else to try at this point; does anyone have any suggestions?

I have one W7 machine that I use as a "server" in my home (it's W7 ultimate, with a shared drive).

I'm not a novice, but I am having a strange problem with it. MOST of the time pulling data off that machine through the shared drive is VERY slow. This is a relatively new development.

For example, I connect to it from my work PC downstairs (they are on the same subnet). there is significant latency when I browse folders on it, and copying files off of it is not really possible. I also use RDesktop to control it once in a while, and screen redraws take 20-30 seconds.

On the other hand, if I go up there and RDesktop back in the other direction, everything appears fine. So it appears to only be Upload; also it looks like it's only a local problem, as when I run internet speedtests I get 7Mb upload from it.

I know what you are thinking: Check the router. So I went ahead and swapped in a known-good 1GB switch. Same problem. So it's on the PC side of things.

It's a new system with a new motherboard, so I am not sure if this is a software issue. I am ready to get a new network adapter, but I was hoping that wasn't necessary.

(I am about to go try a wireless adapter and see how that works).

Any ideas?

Hi, I have an issue where if I make shortcuts to specific folders located inside my User folder (Pictures, Videos, Documents, etc), I have an issue where the shortcuts (even on Quick Access) open up to a smart folder where the filepath is something like This PC/Desktop instead of C:/Users/User/Desktop.

I would not prefer it to be like above ^

I would prefer if all my shortcuts (including Quick access) would lead to a folder path like this.

How can I completely eliminate this smart folder libraries thing and make every single folder inside the User show full file path?

This started a couple months ago but I found a hack where if I open a program and it asks for admin privileges it would magically go away. Anyways, a couple examples of what's happening is hovering over an icon in the tray takes a couple seconds to illuminate showing it is being hovered over. Right clicking opens the border of the little window but it takes a couple seconds to populate with the options. Using task manager is painfully slow. In windows explorer, it takes a couple seconds to show a file or folder is being hovered over. Like I said I found a hack for this but I would like to find an actual solution. Thanks.

Answer:Weird bug where system specific things are very slow.

Welcome to the forum.

With regards to right clicking. The little menu window is called your context menus should you wish to research further within the forum and google.

You likely have to cleanup / adjust what is in your context menu. See this thread.

'Properties' option not accessible in Right Click Menu

As to admin privileges ... this sounds like UAC - User Account Control. Are you trying to disable it or you just don't want the prompt. Did the "hack" you found just disable UAC?

As an overall check you could run sfc /scannow from a Command Prompt Run as Administrator.

One specific website is reallly slow to load - 5 minutes or more - using chrome and firefox browser.  Will not connect at all using IE9. I downloaded/updated JAVA and confirmed it is working,  I ran a full system Malwarebytes scan with no issues, did full system norton scan, I restored advanced settings in IE and reset the IE settings to their default settings and I made sure SSL 3.0 is checked. I also tried adding the web address to "trusted settings".  No luck. All other secure websites I try work fine in all browsers. I even tried restoring windows  to a earlier setting a couple weeks ago with no luck. Just seems odd that same issue with all browsers.   ThanksEdit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Hey all! I've been facing this problem for quite a long time even after upgrading my RAM. The problem is that on specific sites like Facebook, Dailymotion, etc, the audio playback is quite fine but the video playback is slow, laggy, choppy etc. Is it my computer's problem? Well, my graphics is quite low. By quite low, I mean only 32MB. I don't face this problem on Youtube and players like JW players(I guess) which is used in some sites.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi All - i wonder if anybody could shed a ray of light please ?

between 08:30 & 10:00 the search facility on Google using IE8 is painfully slow, so slow the predictive results in the search bar take an absolute age to materialise, you could make a cup of coffee and drink it in the time it takes IE to build a page. :-( (using Google Chrome doesn't make any difference)

This only happens on this one PC on my network & is not related to the network - other PCs are perfectly OK.

I have : -

Reformatted hard drive & reinstalled Windows 7 64bit Ultimate + SP1 + M$ updates to date.
Doing a similar fresh installation on anther PC does not reproduce the problem.
Installed windows Security Essentials & have a good result from a scan.
Reloaded the BIOS on the MB & loaded Recommended Defaults.

Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

Many Thanks in advance.
