Search Popup Dissapears After Typing Two Characters

Question: Search Popup Dissapears After Typing Two Characters

I'm on Windows 10. It's all up to date. When I click in the 'Type here to search' field, I can only type two characters before the search window disappears.

This is a fresh windows install and I don't know what is causing the problem. How can I start narrowing down what is going on?

Preferred Solution: Search Popup Dissapears After Typing Two Characters

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've got one of these Logitech mouse/keyboard wireless combis. Last night the keyboard started playing up. Hitting either the T or V keys types both characters. Its the same with C or E and N and U. Other keys cause windows to open, among other random happenings. Rather annoying as some of these characters are in my log on password. If I did not have the Wacom on screen keyboard at startup I would have been up the creek. Running Vista Home Premium. I have changed batteries, and tonight I will try it with a bog-standard keyboard. if this is ok I suppose its time to ditch the Logitech and get a new one. Just wandered if anyone had any ideas.

After a good coffee spill, mopped rinsed and wiped away from a veteran Cherry keyboard, the same double key standards applied. Fortunately this keyboard can be dismantled to the point where separate laminations could be thoroughly dried. But then a veteran like you would notice the wet splash ...... wouldn't you???

Hello Everyone!
I have a problem with my brand new L20 missing out a lot of characters when I am typing. After searching around the forums, it seems that a few people are also having this problem. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck in fixing this problem yet.

As far as I know, the problem only seems to be in WinXP, (I dual-boot with Linux Slackware 10.2 and don't notice the problem there) and I *think* it might have something to do with the internet. I say this because it is only really noticable for me when I am online, writing emails etc... (Writing to this forum takes a lot of error correcting) :)

Has anyone else been able to isolate when this problem is at its worse?

Also, is it possible to group together all the people who are having this same problem into one thread? I think there are about 3 separate threads where people have mentioned this problem, it would be nice to get everyone together to see if we can fix this.

I brought this notebook for programming, and as you can imagine I dare not try try any coding while this is happening, as it would cause toooooo many problems :)
So please, any help, hints, tips, advice or solutions would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Lee

When typing characters in a windows block, the characters get out of sequence.

Example of correct sequence: THIS IS A TEST OF MY INPUT

Example of actual results: TIS IS A TEST OF MY INPUTH

All characters get typed, but some get ahead of the cursor.

Any ideas as to the cause?

Nomally you can use CTRL+ALT+R   is the key combination to insert the  symbol in some applications like MS Office etc.and ALT + 0174 will also insert the symbol in most places that the CTRL+ALT+R key combinantion does not work, such as in this forum.   Cheers,

Answer:Typing several characters with one keystroke

Most browsers have the ability to remember or in some cases predict the username and password of a site you are trying to log in to.

If you tell me which browser you are using will point you to the relevant tutorial on how to set it up.

Also having your password mapped to a key on your keyboard is not a good idea in terms of security.

If you are still interested in mapping multiple letters or words to a single key it may be worth looking at Keyboard Layout Manager - Keyboard Editor Window (I'm not 100% sure it will let you assign multiple characters to one key but I think it can)

I have had Japanese installed on my language bar for some time, but lately when I try to use it, the wrong characters appear when I type in the Romaji. I tried deleting the Japanese IME and re-adding it, but it made no difference. Could this be caused by a virus? How can I fix it? It still works fine on my laptop, it's only my desktop that is affected.

Answer:Wrong characters appear when typing Japanese

Hi nfarrier, Welcome to Sevenforums.

Yes, it can be virus. Did you made any changes on the PC recently?

As mentioned by Yard Dog, run Malwarebyts to scan for malwares. Run antivrus, and do SFC/SCANNOW to check for any errors.

Hi. I use gedit as editor in my Linux systems (SUSE and Fedora); there I find that I can't type in accented characters like I used to do in Windows.

In the text editor in Windows, even using an English keyboard configuration, I could type in accented characters by entering a combination of Alt+<ASCIIcode>, for example Alt+130 would type in the accented 'e' character; this sequence doesn't work in Linux.

Any suggestions on how to solve the problem ?

It is necessary for you to replace the keyboard. It is not sending the correct signals to the motherboard. Yes, even a notebook computer has a replacable keyboard. It's a job best assigned to a qualified computer technician, to find and order a compatible keyboard, and to disassemble the laptop far enough to be able to swap the keyboard.

Hello a while back my friend spilt a bit of soda on my laptops keyboard, I dried, and flipped my PC over flat on a towel. There was no damage for about a month, but now some key do multiple actions. Example: Pressing (Backspace) now moves the curser to the right one space, turn my volume down once, and then Backspace. Is there a way to fix this myself or would I have to take my PC into a repair store? Or have to replace my keyboard entirely?

Hi, hoping someone here can help me...

Toshiba Satellite A60-106 running Windows XP is missing characters when I type. If I type very very slowly then every key works fine. At normal typing speed numerous letters are dropped. This happens in every application and does not seem load-dependent. The key repeat rate is also slower than it should be (I know how to set this; the problem is not with the setting but with the fact that the setting is not being honoured or recognised properly).

Virus/spyware scan reports clean. The problem began suddenly for no apparent reason and does not seem to be associated with any hardware or software changes. Tried starting in safe mode, tried disabling all non-essential services/startup progams via msconfg but to no avail; problem still there.

Laptop has historically suffered badly from overheating, but this problem is not obviously related as it's the same whether the machine is hot or cold.

Any ideas?

Answer:Re: Satellite A60-106 - Dropping characters when typing

Have you installed drivers for an external Keyboard or Mouse? (for example Logitech or Microsoft)

If you boot into MSDOS, does it still drop characters? You can download a DOS bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com

What BIOS Version is installed? Do you have the latest version?

A. VERY frustrating
B. Wasting a lot of time as I have to keep correcting words to remove the duplicate characters.

Please does anyone know of a fix for this? It can affect any key on the keyboard and it doesn't matter if I type slow or quick, press the keys firmly or as light as possible.

Have checked for firmware updates but none available.

Thanks in advance!

Hi

I hope that someone can help you and me on this!

I have used other machines for years, I am a reasonably competent typist but have suffered the same problem on my Satellite C850 and it drives me mad.

Also the ease with which using the touchpad to move the cursor about results in the machine selecting the settings sidebar for Windows 8 by mistake.

I have tried changing the keyboard sensitivity within windows but this does not seem to help - just slows the keyboard right down.

Really frustrating

There are a mix of ideas here:http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-...Do not update the BIOS though unless you are certain that is the issue (rare) - get it wrong and you need a new motherboard.EDIT:If nothing there helps it might be a keyboard driver issue. If so, go to "Device Manager" and expand out the Keyboards entry. Right click your keyboard and then Uninstall. Do NOT check any box you see about removing the software. The above is not the usual uninstall, it just disengages the software from the hardware. When I create a basic table in Ms Powerpoint 2003 with 2 colums/2 rows, some letters are sometimes spaced properly and sometimes not:

For ie, the word "Settlement" in the attached powerpoint document -> The 1st time Settlement is typed, there is no issue
at all. But the 2nd time it is typed, the letter <t> and the letter <l> are squizzed together. Then the 3rd time it is typed, it is fine. Same issue occurs with other words (for ie the word <test> may be fine the 1st time it is typed, then you type it a 2nd time, you get that issue of the letters <s> and <t> squizzed together.

See the attachments (they are the screenshots of the issue)

Troubleshoot:

(x)Changed her MS Windows profile = same issue

(x)Re-installed MS Office 2003 = same issue

(x)Tried in MS WOrd or Excel = it is fine in Word + Excel. So problem is with power point

Answer:windows live mail typing characters

I'm not that familiar with Windows Mail but suspect that it is seeing your character combination as a request for a smiley. You may be able to point to the symbol, right click and see if there is a 'remove smiley' option. Failing that, try using square or curly brackets ([ or {) as a work around.

Suddenly as of this morning multiple keys on my laptop type their own key but also other characters. It mostly is just additional symbols rather than letters and tends to be the characters next door which they type.

For example:
1) typing 'p' gives 'p['
2) typing '0' gives '0-'
3) typing '-' gives '0-' also
4) typing '.' gives './'
5) typing '/' gives './' also
6) typing ';' gives ';''
7) and vice versa
Also num pad is not working!

So in short it's like a number of adjacent keys have become fused to each other.

I have tested this and it occurs in all programs and windows. On screen keyboard works fine though.

I have so far uninstalled the device driver rebooted and let it reinstall - changed nothing.

Can anybody help?
Thanks
Henry

Answer:Laptop keys also typing adjacent characters

Do you have another keyboard you can plug in and try? That will tell you if it's the keyboard (problem will not show with replacement) or the keyboard-to-PC interface (problem will persist with replacement). If you don't have an extra yourself, maybe you can borrow one from a friend /family/colleague/neighbor...?

I've used W8.1 for sometime and this morning I was surprised to find that typing any character in many programs (for example Live Mail or Chrome) produces a floating menu of alternate chinese characters and won't allow me to have Western original typed on the keyboard. I tried one Registry fix for WLM but it didn't work as a value changed to 0 reset itself everytime to 1.
Any ideas where to look to fix this? It's actually impossible to use the effected laptop as data entry of any kind is now effectively defeated.

Hi,
As stated above in the questionnaire, my system was sluggish and I ran my PCMatic scan which would stop running about 40% through the scan. I ran Malwarebytes (free) with no issues found. Removed PCMatic and installed AVG (free) which found some issues and cleaned them up but performace wasn't improved much. My keyboard then began to act quirky by characters not appearing or the cursor jumping around or nothing will happen but the "system busy wheel" pops up for a few seconds before characters appear on the screen.

I came back to you guys because TwinHeadedEagle was so effective at helping me with my desktop 18 mos ago that I was hoping for help.

Thanks, regards and please advise if I can once again get some assistance,

Answer:Strange behavior like typing & no characters appear, cursor jumps randomly

Hello,
Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.

It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

Machine approaching three years old and not continually used. A couple of weeks ago, it started missing characters when typing or it will type two characters and then highlight them so when you type again the first two characters are gone. Does this on both the on screen and laptop keyboard. Tried an external keyboard and it too acted the same way.
Here's what I've done - run diagnostics (no issues), downloaded and installed most recent BIOS, chipset, video and all other drivers. Have also in Device Manager deleted keyboards and rebooted with no change. All Windows 10 updates are installed.
Most of the time I have it plugged in and charge set to only charge when battery is approaching low.
Have not removed the battery and keeping it as a last option.

Vey frustrasting as I always have to go back to add or delete a character.

When I run a word program in safe mode, it works fine. Someone told me it may be a software issue as the problem does not occur in safe mode.

Hey,

Have any of y'all seen a box that pops up with a blue border, at the top there is a penguin with 4 Chinese characters beside it. Below is another with QQ: then a box with 10000 in it, two or three more characters, another box with 10000 in it, then a small box with the image of a person in it, followed by 8 more characters.
Then below that is a larger box full of Chinese characters and some numbers. After this pops up, things deteriorate rapidly. The first thing we noticed was that the Task manager would not open. Others had other problems, eventually not being able to work at all.

I'm not asking for a solution. We have been looking High and Low, and we know how to use the tools available. I just want to know if anyone out there has come across this and if anyone knows where it came from?

Thanks!!

2 days ago, if i clicked start, and typed, for example, "msconfig" into the search box and hit return, it would bring up the configuration settings.

Now, when i do this, it opens a search page with the results in it, instead of just running what i want.

have i changed some setting that has adversly affected this?

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Essential G580 on 15th May 2013. Everything was working perfectly until yesterday when my keyboard started to type random characters. I had just put my laptop to sleep on the night of 20th July 2013 and when I switched on the laptop on the evening of 21st July 2013 the keyboard started typing random stuff. There has been no spillage on the laptop as its safely covered on my table and I am the only one living in my room. Also to make sure its not because of a software glitch, I tried the following: 1. Restarted the system multiple times2. Went to an earlier System restore point. (Tried 5 different one's)3. Refreshed the system4. Took a backup and Formatted the whole hard disk and reinstalled Windows.5. Switched off the laptop for the night and tried switching it on today morning. None of the above helped. So obviously it is not a software problem. (FYI: The Onscreen Keyboard just works fine) A few example stuff which I get when I press the keys: CAPS Lock: WX (When I press Caps lock key it types WX along with it so the pattern goes like this: WXwxWXwxWXwx and so on if you keep pressing caps lock)q: When I press q its types a tab with qwm: its types yum instead of mw: works like caps lock key. Turns on Caps and types WX too.x: same as wBackspace: Backspace deletes one character and along with that presses the enter key too The keys in the middle row i.e.. asdfghjkl are all working fine. The problem seems to be with t... Read more

Answer:Lenovo Essential G580 Keyboard Malfunctioning (Keyboard typing unnecessary characters)

hi bijoy3d,

Welcome to the Forums.

What you can try is to reseat the keyboard ribbon (see page 49-51 of the hardware maintenance manual). If that doesn't work, there's really something wrong with the physical keyboard and you need to contact lenovo support for service.

Hi

Can I do a select statement on an Oracle database where I search a table for all records where field x contains special characters(ie it contains chanracters that are not between A to Z(both cases) and 0 to 9? These characters can be in the field also though.

I hope that makes sense.

Paul

Answer:SQL - Search for records containing special characters

This would be very tricky using just SQL; I'd recommend that you write a small program based on a "select fieldX from tableY" cursor and then check each letter of fieldX in turn to see if it is special.

If oracle sql supports a substring type function in the where clause then you could possibly check for a limited number of characters using something along the lines of:

Code:
select
fieldX
from
tableY
where
instr('$',fieldX) = TRUE OR
instr('&',fieldX) = TRUE OR
instr('#',fieldX) = TRUE...
but it would be slow and clunky.

If I've done some part of this incorrectly, please be gentle when instructing me on how to do it better, okay?About three weeks ago I picked up the malware that redirects all of my search results, regardless of whether I'm using Google or Alta Vista or Bing. At first hint of this issue, I set my system back three days and all was okey-dokey for several days (3? 4? no more than 5, fer sure)I then located this web site and figured all would be fine shortly. Little did I guess... oy vey.I downloaded FixNCR.reg, the eXplorer.exe application and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and ran them in that order & then restarted my system; it worked beautifully, identifying a number of nasty things and ridding my system of them. Life was good for a week or so.Then it started creeping back... not on -every- search, mind you, just "some," but then "some" turned into every over a period of a four or five days. A secondary characteristic I'm suffering is that while I still have system alerts blatting at me when I do something silly, none of the applications that would normally produce audio (youtube videos, singing greeting cards, etc.) do so.And a tertiary charachteristic is I'm finding random Asian characters on random pages... when I head to FaceBook, or order from a reliable vendor or try to log into some BBs. ~~sigh~~ I've now run the FixNCR.reg, the eXplorer.exe application and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware routine three times over and the resu... I have been trying to use javascript replace() to search and replace special individual characters in a string. But having some difficulties.

the string is something like:

sometext+othertext&moretext?somemoretext=somevalue&sometext+othertext&moretext?somemoretext=somevalue

In the above example string I want to replace all occurences of the following characters:

+, =, ?, &

This is how I tried to do it for each character:

replace("+", "NewText").

But this only replaced the first occurence of the character.

I also tried
replace(/+/g, "NewText"), but it would not allow me to do it.
Any assistance will be much appreciated.

I still can't figure out this Windows 8 search function ...

I have a bunch of text files and I need to search for the following string for example within the files:

now()

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to search for this string?

It seems like Windows 8 ignores just about all non-alphanumeric characters when searching.

If I can't search within files for a simple string like the above I'm screwed!

Ill be playing a game (So far it has always been full screen games) and some random amount of time after I've been playing a vista themed bar will kind of flash (as in you see it for a second then its gone).

It looks like a one inch section of the task bar on vista with a white text field in the center and a green looping arrow on the right.

When ever I hold down or hit a letter key it will flash and some foreign characters will start appearing like I'm typing Japanese. So I have to restart my game to get it to go away, but after playing the game for a little bit it happens again.

Games it happened to: GTA IV, GTA SA, BF 2142, COD 5, and a couple others

Please help, and if any additional info is needed just say so.
BTW operating system is Vista 32 bit

Thanks in advance

Hi

I've volunteered to sort some data for someone as part of a project I'm doing. The problem is I'm not too sure how to properly write/use macros for Excel 2007.

The point of the data sorting is to eventually clean up a dataset so that I have the start of an address i.e. 1 North Street City.

I've got a dataset of thousands of values made up of parts of addresses. Some of the data have postcodes already and I want to extract these postcodes as a starting point to clean it up. I'd like to extract them and save them in a separate cell.

So I was wondering if anyone could help?

Say for example I had this data in A1

1 North Street B22 2BC

Is there a way to write a macro that will select any combination of three characters a space and three characters, whether that would be at the start, middle or end of a cell? And then put this data into a neighbouring cell?

If anyone could help I would really appreciate it!

Thanks

Catherine

Radom characters have started appearing when I search.  I have been using firefox and google chrome.  On chrome the term tracker ID or something similar was coming up.  I found another forum that seemed to have a similar problem so followed the instructions that were given to her however random characters are still appearing in firefox (although this did stop temporarily) and google chrome has now stopped working entirely.

the last time i opened firefox this came up - https://www.google.co.uk/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=3_CyVOm9LcLAcK3ZgaAF&gws_rd=ssl

after searching for bleeping computer this came up - https://www.google.co.uk/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=3_CyVOm9LcLAcK3ZgaAF&gws_rd=ssl#q=bleeping+computer

Also over christmas my computer had become infected by the vosterum virus - after following the instructions that were posted on this forum it appeared to go - Could there be a link ? i.e is it possible that I didn't succeed in getting rid of the virus completely.

Also I think I may have become infected with vosterum after a start button update - i'm on windows 8 which has no official start button

I have saved for logs from the scans that I did to try to remove vosterum and the scans that i did recently following the steps that were recomened to a different user with a similar problem

About eleven years ago I worked part time at a local company. There was this game on one of their personal computers and in my spare time I would play it The game had a picture of a city on it and from above certain letters would fall toward it to bomb portions of this city. To prevent the word bombs from hitting the city you had to type in the same word and an anti word missile would be launched to destroy that word bomb. It had different levels and with each level the word bombs would fall at a faster rate. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this? I know it sounds ancient but I used to love to play it.

Hi all,I have P50 thinkpad with Win10 professional and I have a strange problem that started yesterday after installation offew updates done through Lenovo System Update. Before that installation everything worked fine.Problem is that typing anything in the search box doesn't work, meaning letters do not appear. It happens in the Start menu search box and also inside Settings search box.Keyboard itself is not the problem since it works fine in other applications, also in Control Panel or  Windows explorer search box. I've tried virtual keyboard and that also doesn't work.If I paste text (Ctrl + V doesn't work, but right click and Paste does) into the search box, search will find the item, so search itself is OK, just that I cannot input any text to it.Out of these installed updates, to me looks like ThinkPad HotKey Features Integration Package might be the cause. Can you help me with some advice on how to fix this?Note that I've tried restarting computer, reindexing, restarting Explorer, Cotrana and Serch service, but to no help.I've also created new user account and tried from there but with same result.I don't have a System Restore point so I can't do a recovery. Here are list of installed updates.   And here is the video:

I had to disable the "search as you type" function in firefox just to make this post. If I put my cursor in any text field like Google search or just to make a post on a forum, the auto search thing starts coming up and thinks I'm trying to search a string of text on the page, as it does the "bleep" sound cause of no matches

It happens from time to time but is really annoying, anyone dealt with this yet? Solutions? Thanks.

I'm not sure I quite understand what is happening, but I'll make a guess. Could your control key be sticking and whenever you hit the F key it pops you into the find box (Ctrl+F) and starts searching for what you type after that?

Sometimes, every few days or so if I go to type into the search bar, explorer stops responding.

Faulting Application : Explorer.exe

Other than that, explorer works fine. The last time it crashed was about 10 days ago according to the reliability monitor, and it crashd today. Sfcscannow does not show any violations. When my computer has been idle for a while, or even when I start it after being turned off, most of the time, the password field is automatically filled in as if I were holding down the space bar. Sometimes this occurs in a search box, once i'm logged onto the computer. It isn't typing characters, just spaces. I ran numerous virus checkers, and found nothing. then I reset my computer to the factory settings - but that didn't solve the problem! I had this problem fixed once by a company I can't contact any more. But I believe I undid the fix when my iPod wouldn't work - when I followed the troubleshooting instructions for the iPod, I enabled something that had previously been disabled. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to get back to that "place." Since my iPod now works, I can't get troubleshooting information from it.If you have any ideas, I would be so grateful!joy

No, symptoms don't sound at all like a virus. If you feel like checking it out, this free program is good at unearthing things that your AV might miss (green button top right):http://www.filehippo.com/download_m...It doesn't run in the background you just Update it and give it the Quick Scan if you are suspicious.

Hi,

after windows 10 Anniversary Update on my XPS 2720 I started having trouble with the wireless keyboard. When using windows search box or windows mail, I can only type a few letters then the keyboard stops working (except for a few keys, like the space bar, backspace, +, -). The keyboard works fine in all other applications (microsoft office, browsers and so on). The problem is not present in safe mode.

Drivers are up to date and I already tried this (copied from another similar thread within the Microsoft community):

Method 1:

If I leave my computer on for roughly an hour I will go and attempt to either rename a file or search a file in the normal os search menu. The second I type one letter the os locks up and I am forced to end the explorer.exe process. I have recently reformatted my computer no more than 4 months ago and prior to that I was given the same problem. I heard and read in select online searches this has to do with shell extensions of some sort, yet to this day I cannot find a definite solution. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 and am having a weird issue with any program where info is typed in like IE 10, IE 11, Firefox, iTunes, etc.

Here is what is going on - start up IE11 and loads OK. I can type in the URL bar and get to any address I type but if I go to google or yahoo or bing and try to type in the search field, IE 11 instantly hangs and does not respond. Same with the yahoo and bing website. Any website that has a search field exhibits the same issues.

Firefox exhibits the same problems but I can't even type in the URL field.

If I got to, say this forum, and try and type in my login credentials, IE 11 hangs.

If I open iTunes and try to sign into the store, as soon as I try to type in my username iTunes hangs just like IE 11.

I have tried running a full scan with MBAR and Malewarebytes AntiMalware and nothing shows up.

I have also gone into IE 11 and opened the Internet options, selected advanced and reset Internet explorer settings which did not help

I tried creating a new user on the machine and logging into that account and experience the same problems.

I also tried firing up IE 11 with no add-ons with same results.

I have noticed that when I start IE 11, the task manager instantly shows two new processes, iexplore.exe and iexplore.exe *32 - is this normal?

Answer:Internet Explorer keeps hanging when typing in any search field

An update to this post

I have been troubleshooting and narrowed down the culprit to a Startup Item labeled Bluetooth Software by Broadcom Corporation. The command is C:\PROGRA~1\WIDCOMM\BLUETO~1\BTTray.exe

When I check the driver of this USB Bluetooth device, it shows drivers dated 8/7/2013 with version number 12.0.0.7600 so it seems to be up to date but this entry is clearly what is causing my issues as reloading it will cause my problems and not allowing the entry to load cures my issues.

Now to see if I can find an more current version of the driver to cure the issue.

Problem. Can not rename a folder in windows 10. Once you start typing the program moves to a file with the same letter in its name.

I'm sure it's not my imagination. I use to be able to press the Windows Key, the Start Menu would pop up and then I could simply start typing the name of whatever program I wanted to launch. Since the last update (15063.608), that doesn't work. It appears that the "Type here to search" box use to be the initial "focus" but isn't anymore. If I hit the Windows Key three times in sequence, then I get what I want, but that seems a bit silly.

Is there a configuration option for this? I imagine it's something to do with Cortana.

Hi there. Just to see if this search option works > WinKey/S combo > Type in the name of an app you have. Does it give the correct result?

Hello,

I find when I press the Windows key, or open the Start Screen and start typing, nothing happens. Usually the sidebar opens with search results, but recently it has stopped working completely. Also, the search charm on the sidebar, and the search button on the Windows 8.1 (update) Start Screen do not work either--when I press them, nothing happens.

I spent a couple of hours looking for a solution to this problem, but with no luck. At first I thought it was a Windows Search service that had stopped working, so I restarted them, but the problem persisted.

I appreciate any help!

Answer:Typing in the Start Screen doesn't work/Can't search

Go to Indexing Options in the control panel, advanced button and trouble shoot. You can also rebuild the index

I have tried to find my situation in here, and cannot find it. I am on my laptop because my Windows pc is acting erratic. The search pane keeps popping up, with the left side saying to download Chrome. I don't have Chrome installed. I try to type in my password, and it starts typing by itself, like the key is pressed down a long time. Is this my keyboard or a bug? The area where I type flickers too. I try to go into control panel, and the selection keeps going up and down. I think I may have two different viruses. I have Norton Suite from Comcast. I did the full scan once, and it found something called a Heuristic Virus, which is deleted/quarantined. The pc was fine after that. The firewall has been on. However, it has now returned the next time I turn on the pc. If this keeps returning even after Norton Security Suite cleans up my pc what do I do?
Do I have a keylogger virus?

Let's find out if you have any infections or not.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.
After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:
If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
If you cannot seem to login to an infected user ... Read more

noticed yesterday that a small rectangular box appeared on my compaq presario v2000 screen in the upper right hand corner and the letter 'n' kept printing itself. rebooted, then the letter 'n' typed itself whether i clicked on the address bar, the search bar or my signin password bar. i could delete the n's but they would reappear almost immediately.

there was a brief time that i could delete the n's, type what i wanted hit enter and use the computer but it has gotten worse so i shut it down.

thinking i might have a stuck n on the keyboard, did everything except pry the letter out of the laptop. i was using ubuntu 15.04 and an update to 15.10 was available so i did that, thinking maybe that would rectify the problem. no such luck.

any idea what i might do? thanks for all your help.

That's actually probably what you need to do. Remove the key and look for something stuck underneath it.

Hi,

lately I've been having a weird and annoying problem, I'm browsing a folder in windows explorer and when I start typing a name of a file or a folder (that exists in the folder), the cursor is jumping to the search window in the top side, the text I type is written there and the search is starting, all I want is that when I type it will point to file I was looking for, if exists (like it should).

Please help me solve it.

Thanks.

I don't know why I am getting Yahoo results when I type into Googl's address bar. It no longer gives me Google Results.

Google is my default search in that I typed in the Google search bar google.com/google.reg

I use to have Google in my address bar and got Google results , but now it's Yahoo's search results fromm the address bar.

How do I get Google back into the address bar search ?

I use to type a word into firefox address bar and it would automatically add http://www. whatever , and go without my clicking the "GO" button. and it gave me google results. but it no longer does. I have to type it in. When I just type a word into Google address bar , it gives the results fromm Yahoo.

Please help. I want Google back into my address bar.

Thanks

I'll go to Yahoo, type in a search topic, (i.e. "youtube") and when i go to click on the link for "youtube" it sometimes redirects me to random sites. Sometimes multiple sites in a row. It does it about 50% of the time with my searches. AVG Ant-Virus, Malwarebytes, and Ad-Aware all say I'm clean and can't find any viruses, malware, etc. I ran a CCleaner aswell. Sorry about the lack of information, but i can answer any questions. Thanks for your time -Jake
