Preferred Solution: External monitor in different time turn off

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was wondering if theres any sort of program out there that would allow me to control how quickly my monitor turns off depending on what time of day it is, or something similiar. I always have to turn it to 1 min before I go to bed because I prefer my room dark, then reset it to 20 mins during the day. Thanks

Hi all,

Anyone else experienced this?

Every time I turn my monitor off (Dell 2405FPW), 7 immediately blue screens with reason irq_not_less_or_equal. Has happened with all 64 bit versions of 7 (tried 7022, 7048 and now 7057), never happened with 7000 x86. It also doesn't happen on vista x86 and 64 bit.

Hello, I have a ThinkPad R61, which I use with an external monitor.  Somehow, I have had it in place for months with the display on the laptop off and the monitor on.  I used it today at a meeting to power a projector, somehow selected an Fn F7 scheme of presentation such that both the screen and projector were on - as I desired - then came home, re-installed it with my external monitor and cannot find out how to turn off the display on the laptop.  The selections under Fn F7 don't allow that combination.  I tried the trick you offered, Fn F3 to turn off the display, but it turned off both displays.  (Now, how can I reverse that setting?) This seems like an everyday switching requirement, but I cannot find a clue in the ThinkVantage Help, the mini manual, on the website, etc.  Thanks

Answer:Turn display off when using external monitor R61?

Hi WaynO, After pressing Fn-F7, click on Manage Schemes... to open the Presentation Director window. Then click the New... button. You should be able to set up a scheme to display only on your external monitor. After setting it up, be sure to check the box in the Fn+F7 Menu column so that your new scheme shows up in the menu when you press Fn-F7.

I have a T530 with Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA NVS 5400M. I use a Samsung 27" monitor using HDMI to display port on a mini dock plus series 3.Win 7 64 and all Lenovo drivers are up to date.My problem is that my external display does not shut off at the set interval. I have an IBM Thinkpad T40p. It has an ATI Mobility Fire GL 9000 and a built-in 1400x1050 display. I have it hooked up to an external monitor on a docking station. When the screen is set to 1400x1050, the image on the external monitor pans with the movement of the mouse. I know the monitor is capable of up to 1600x1200 and that is listed in one of the modes. I tried adding a 1400x1050 mode with an ini file and that didn't work. I might not have done it right or the hardware (or the driver) below the level of the ini file is actually reading the monitor and the monitor is reporting back it's modes. Those modes include 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 but not 1400x1050. So it decides to pan the 1400x1040 image on the monitor in 1280x1024 mode.

Is there a way to turn this panning off? Will the monitor actually display a 1400x1050 image?

Answer:How to turn off pan on external monitor on IBM Thinkpad?

Very few standard monitors will display anything between 1280 and 1600. Maybe one of the newer widescreen TFT's will do it.

Your best bet is probably to change your screensettings to something your external monitor can display when using it.

Why does my screen sometimes goes blank after a period of inactivity ( like 8 hours )? And sometimes not!. My monitor screen just turns off ( yellow light ). Then i just turn my mouse and screen goes back to normal. ITS TOTALLY RANDOM!
I have disabled all sleep functions.
I disabled the screen saver and I disabled the OPTION of the OS turning off the screen. Yet, the screen will still turn itself off after a period of inactivity. I'm currently using a BENQ G2250. All power saving is disabled in monitor menu.

One thing to check on your monitor is whether it has it's own power save option. I have heard about that option but never seen it.

I have an external 4k UHD monitor connected to my HP 8470p laptop. (I project content only on external monitor and my laptop screen is off)

The settings on Windows 7 have been configured to turn off the display after 1min (my laptop is still on and never shut off or put to sleep).

After a min of leaving the system idle, my monitor screen turns off and immediately within a few seconds turns on, a blank screen appears and displays my input source (in my case would blink "Display Port" a couple of times). Then a few seconds later turns off. This keeps looping forever and my monitor never sleeps.

Can anyone please help me resolve this?

Answer:How to auto turn off laptop screen while using external monitor ?

i don't know if it's possible but you could try going into display settings and set external one as it's main display if possible and then disable laptop one with Fn + F2 but idk if it will remain off if you power laptop of and then on again :/ Update: found how to do this, right click on desktop area and select screen resolution while having external display connected then from there you will find a drop down box 3rd one or 4th one can't remember but inside it you will find stuff like display desktop on screen 1 or 2 so find which screen number your external screen is and apply it to that screen then laptop screen should become black like it's switched off and you will see desktop area is on external display so i hope this solves your request. P.s don't forget to hit kudos button if this helped

Have a dell xps laptop that i connect an external monitor to. My main screen would be the external monitor and my laptop screen would be the secondary screen.

Im located outside the us and where im at, its very common to have power outrages. Thus internet going out and also electricity going out. But when electricity goes out, it usually isn't that long. Many times it would go out for a few minutes then it would all come back etc. Theres been few times when the outage has been much longer.

I would immediately know this when my external monitor turns off and when my fans turn off. Then usually it comes back again. Well earlier this happened and everything turned off. So when this happens, the power in the refridgerator is off as well. Then the electricity seemed to have came back on.

However, I then went to power on my external monitor and nothing turns on because i notice the external monitor didn't turn back on which is almost always does.

Hi,

I am running W10 and whenever I have an external monitor connected to a Dell Inspiron 7348 laptop and choose show only on monitor 2 or I close the laptop lid which disable the laptop screen, the 2nd monitor turns upside down. I have updated drivers. I also have auto rotation disabled. Please help

Answer:External monitor rotates upside down when I turn off built in display

Do you have a program from Dell installed which will rotate it despite the feature being disabled in the Settings?

For anybody else looking for an answer, note that this is a laptop/tablet so screen rotation is normal behavior. The laptop might possibly believe that it is upside down when it is closed but you do have the feature disabled which is wierd.

Answer:Can't turn off Color Calibrator reminder to tune external monitor

If you run the calibration once you should be asked after the calibration if you want to be reminded. Choose to not be reminded and you shouldn't see that message again. Another option if you don't use it anyway is to uninstall the software.

Hi, I bought a HP 10 inch mini laptop(with XP) just a month ago. I have used the laptop with a 21 inch external monitor which is connected to the laptop via a VGA port. It has been OK for a month, but I don't know what I did to it, Today I just can not keep both my laptop screen and the external monitor screen on at the same time, when I connect the external monitor, the laptop screen turns off immediately, if I disconnect the external monitor, then the laptop screen came on. I need to keep both of them on at the same time, hope someone can help me. Thanks.

Hi,I was hoping that with the Docking station and the external monitor, I can work as with an ordinary computer and at the same time use the Laptop Tablet display to take notes with Journal (extended desktop display).Unfortunately, when I touch the screen with the stylus, it is always projected to the external monitor - no matter what I set as primary display This seems just really dumb.Does anyone have an idea how to prevent this?divB

Answer:Using tablet function and external monitor at the same time

Hope someone sees this... I have a similar issue. I am using extended monitor settings with the external monitor set to primary and the built-in monitor set to secondary. The Thinkpad is in a docking station. The battery is facing away from me. With the screen turned upward (tablet mode), I have to use Graphics Properties to rotate the built-in display 180 degrees for the screen to be oriented in the appropriate direction.  When I try to use the stylus on the tablet, it not displays on the external monitor (instead of on the built-in), but it's backwards. When I move the stylus from left to right on the tablet, it goes from right to left on the external display. When I move the stylus from the base of the tablet (as oriented to me) to the top, it goes from top to bottom on the external display. Would love a fix for this if anyone has one. Thanks!

Preparing boss' new x301. He does not want an external keyboard, but he does want an external monitor. X301 came only with an enhanced USB Port Replicator (he's used to a docking station but Lenovo does not offer one for the X301). So far I cannot find any way to turn the x301 display off while keeping the laptop open for keyboard use while using an external monitor.  He's going to raise bloody hell if I cannot find a way to do this. The "Lenovo Display Adaptor" in the system tray doesn't have such an option, and it seems neither does the Power Management. FN F7 makes the screen flicker for one second, but does nothing further. Thank you so much. for any help.Message Edited by studiopeg on 05-19-2009 09:42 AM

Hello,
OS: win10 Familly

I use an external hdmi monitor on a notebook, in that case I only use the external monitor (viz no dual display).

I can adjust the brightness of:
* the notebook screen with the "Sun up" and "Sun down" key on the keyboard.
* the external monitor with the menu on the monitor, but modifying on the monitor is cumbersome: need to call the menu, then "Picture", than "Brightness", then OK, then adjust with + and -, then finally confirm.
As the day light vary, from a bright sunny to dark, I noticed it's very relaxing to adjust the brightness between 100% (sunny) to 40% (dark).
How is it possible to "easily" adjust the external monitor brightness?

1/ The "Sun" up and down key only functions for the notebook, not for the external monitor - it's quick & easy.
Is it possible to apply to the external monitor?

2/ There are browser add-ons for that, but then it's bound to the browser, not all other apps.

Ideally, I would like to create 3 profiles of brightness or have some simple + and - keyboard shortcuts to adjust the hdmi brightness.

Thanks

Internal display + VGA connector display

Is it possible to have:

DVI connector display + VGA connector display?

OR

DVI connector display + VGA connector display + Internal display?

Answer:Satellite P100: Can I connect two external monitor to VGA & DVI port at the same time?

As far as I know this is not possible and you can use either DVI or VGA port.
For signal output can be used only one port for external display.

I have an X1, fairly new, and it is connected to a OneLink docking station.  The docking station has two monitors attached via display port. When I lock the computer to leave my area and come back to unlock the computer (after as little as a minute), the external monitors have turned off to standby and it takes5-10 seconds to turn on from standby mode.  I would prefer that my external monitors stay on, while the computer is locked. I have attached a picture of the computer display/power settings.

Hello, I suspect this is a rather simple fundamental Windows operation procedure, but I am going bald - tearing my hair out - trying to get this to work!!  I use Windows XP on a Lenovo 3000 V100, with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver (Intel 945W chipset).  Whenever I plug into an external monitor, I always have to manually switch the display from the laptop to the external monitor.  Here's the sequence of what happens.1) connect external monitor & turn on laptop2) Lenovo banner appears on the external monitor3) Windows banner appears on the external monitor4) but then Windows GUI (log-on screen) switches back to laptop monitor.5) must use hot keys to toggle the display from laptop to external monitor.6) must then reselect resolution settings of the external monitor (none of previously saved settings were recognized!!!) I must repeat these steps once I logged of my computer session; and reconnect with the external monitor later.  I would appreciate any help or suggestions.  Thank you.

Answer:How to make Lenovo recognize external monitor as default at boot time?

I don't have an V100 to check the following but, if you go into BIOS (F1 at boot) there should hopefully be an entry in the Config > Display menu allowing you to select default boot display as VGA rather than intern.

Hi,  I'm trying to setup dual monitor for my lenovo T61P laptop. I want to use one external monitor which is connected to my Thinkpad docking station and the laptop lcd monitor. I'm using windows vista x64. Does any one else have it setup this way? When I connect the laptop to the docking station, only the external  monitor displays data. I've tried going into desktop settings to extend my desktop but only one monitor is present. Please help. I've spent an entire two days playing with BIOS settings, searching forums....

Answer:T61P - dual monitor with docking station (laptop lcd monitor) and one external monitor

This started working fine when I installed the video drivers below: Display (NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M / Quadro FX 570M) driver for Windows Vista 64-bit - ThinkPadhttp://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67939  It looks like I had installed the wrong video drivers (32-bit)  previously. Now fn+F7 works fine and I am able to extend my desktop to mulple monitors (dual-monitor).

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

Answer:Monitor Issues - Laptop Reading Built In Monitor as if it were my external monitor.

Only thing I can think of is to disconnnect the external monitor, uninstall any monitors listed and then reboot and hope the computer installs the correct drivers for the laptop monitor.

Hi folks. New here.  Sorry if this has  been asked/answered, but I searched and didn't find it. My company got me this great new W500 laptop.  Came with minidock and external monitor. I have the monitor plugged into the minidock, and have it to the right of the laptop. Laptop is monitor #2, and external LCD display is #2.  works great.  UNTIL.... If I lock the console, and fold the laptop monitor closed (to have it power off - i.e. at lunch break, etc...) When I come back, the external monitor is now monitor #1 (has the windows task bar, Start menu, etc...) and it thinks the laptop monitor is monitor #2.  I can't figure out how to switch them back without rebooting.  It's very frustrating, b/c the 'sides' are swapped too.  Meaning the external LCD display which is physically to the right, is "on the left" as far as Windows is concerned, so if I drag the mouse off-screen to the right of the external display, it arrives on the left side of the laptop (which is physically to the left). Is there a simple solution to this?  I can't live with having to reboot every time I lock my monitor. I'm using Windows XP if that makes a difference.

Answer:Dual Monitor issue. Lock console & external monitor becomes monitor #1

more information... It's the 'advanced minidock' with keys. The monitor is connected via the DVI port, not the plain old VGA port.

Can you post your computer specs, along with your operating system, your external gpu name Is this an external gpu or an internal PCI-E video card?

Can you also post the wattage of your power supply.

At a guess I would say your power supply isn't powerful enough to run the card. "2 seconds off" Is this a new card and what was the reason for the change? On the black screen error this sounds like a basic driver error.

In either case remove 'external' video card from your computer, download the latest drivers for your os and internal video card from the manufacturers website go to; control panel, programs and delete ALL video card related drivers then run this program.

http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Sweeper_d6171.html

Delete ALL drivers.

Turn on your onboard video card in bios

Now install the downloaded driver for your on board video card, does your onboard work now?
EDIT OOPS! Welcome to the forum!

Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what... Read more

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

I can't get the external monitor (aka dual screen) to work on my T60 via the VGA port. My model is currently running Windows XP and has a ATI Radeon X1300 video card. I'm 6 months out of warantee (although this problem started while in warantee but I can't convince Lenovo of that). I've tried the following:- ensuring "extend my monitor onto this desktop" in windows display properties- disabling/enabling Presentation Director and trying all the schemes- setting all different combinations of modes for resolution/colour on both (LCD + VGA) monitor- trying two different monitors and cables (which did work with other computers)- Updating the video drivers (from the Lenovo website) and Presentation Director to the latest versions I then figured it might be a hardware fault, so I tried to see if the external monitor was activated on bootup. I made sure the "LCD + VGA" option on boot was selected in BIOS. Still no joy. Finally, I figured the actual VGA connector was broken so I bought a compatible mini docking station (port replicator) and attached the VGA cable to that and even that didn't work. What on earth could be wrong if it's not the software and not the VGA connector? The video card is working as its powering the LCD display? Is my only option to give it in to repair (I can't afford that)? --MichaelMessage Edited by mstrom on 07-03-2008 04:03 AM

Answer:external monitor simply not working - including with external dock (dual screen)

Hi,Does the external connections and cables work with another system. I'd do that first. If all of it works with another system then it could be drivers or internal things but try that first. There are some driver updates on the Lenovo site. Make sure your BIOS are updated and such.Good Luck,

I'm using a T430s and a mini dock plus series 3. This is the dock with the dual DVI, dual DisplayPort, 1x VGA. I do not use the laptop's built-in screen; just the 2 external monitors. Intel HD4000 graphic chip and Nvidia Optimus/ I previously had 2 20" monitors with a 1680x1050 resolution using DVI-to-DVI. They both worked fine. I upgraded to 2 24" monitors with a 1920x1200 resolution. The laptop is not recognizing the second monitor. I have tried:dual display port (dock side) to mini display port (monitor side): only 1 monitor recognizeddual dvi (dock side) to HDMI (monitor side): only 1 monitor recognizedI ruled out monitor and cable problems by swapping...each by itself works fine. Looking up specs, I believe this resolution should be supported by DP or DVI. Can anybody confirm that this is a supported config? Any ideas what is wrong? UPDATE - I did try 1 DP/mDP and 1 DVI/HDMI: this does work. However, its not an ideal solution because it would interfere with the monitors ports which I want to use for a second PC. UPDATE 2 - OK, now I am beyond aggrivated. I also have a support ticket w/ Lenovo where they suggested switching to Integrated Graphics only in the BIOS. I tried that, no luck. After changing that setting back, i tried to get my 1 DP / 1 DVI working, but now it would not recognize dual monitors. ??? After some testing, I'm finding that the -only- setup that works is the following: Dock DVI port 1 to Moni... Answer:Second monitor not detected: T430s with Mini Dock Plus Series 3 dual external monitor

Fixed; was a driver issue. Problem seems exclusive to a Dell u2415 on DP port 1 only of the dock or to the laptop's DP port (at least for the couple monitors I tried). It's possible it could affect other monitors. My starting point: 9.18.13.4535 / 9.17.10.2843 (Nvidia /  Intel) The latest driver from Lenovo is 9.18.13.4535 / 8.15.10.2725. I'm not sure how i have a slightly newer Intel, but that's what it was. I couldn't install the Lenovo driver. I also couldn't install a newer driver from Intel (10.18.10.4276). In both cases Windows or the Intel installer stopped me saying the mfr provided the drivers and that the installed version was up to date. I worked around by first rolling back the Intel driver. The manual (.zip) install of the latest intel driver worked. This immediately fixed the Dell u2415 on DP port 1 and laptop's built-in DP port.

Hello, I am considering to buy an external 4K monitor or a LG 38" ultrawide monitor. I am currently running Windows 7 Professional but I could upgrade to Windows Creator Updates if I want to. I heard many complains about scaling issues with 4K displays. I suppose this happens when users are trying to increase the font size so that they could read the very tiny letters clearly. Am I correct? If I use a larger external 4K monitor, say at 40"-49" or a 38" LG ultrawide monitor at 3840x1600 resolutions, I should be able to see the letters without increasing the font size manually. In this case, will I still have scaling issues? I plan to use the monitor for CAD (SolidWorks), programming, Matlab/Simulink, data science, medical imaging, etc. Thank you.

To anyone, I have a new Thinkpad Pro Dock and a T440S. Connected an external Viewsonic monitor with a DVI cable to to dockstation. When I close the lid to the laptop the external monitor would only give me the resolution 640x480, on the forum I found that there was a firmware. I upgraded the firmware. Shutdown the laptop unplug the AC adapter and plugged everything back in. Now when I boot up the external monitor says out of range and black and the laptop screen is black and can't see anything.  If I unplug the laptop from the dock the laptop monitor screen comes back. How do I fix this problem. I only have a DVI cable. I have Windows 7 64bit Pro. The firmware was gid638ww.exe

I'm trying to use an older flat screen monitor as an extended monitor on my Yoga 900 series laptop.  I have a VGA to USB connector.  The reason I"m trying to do this is that I cannot use Windows 10 terminal server to remote to my clients server because the resolution is so high everything is tiny.  (I have played with the resolution on my laptop; also the scaling, but when I finally get to a full screen resolution I can see, the cursor disappears in the apps I'm using). I can get the external monitor to work in extended mode just fine and the result on the old monitor is exactly what I want.  But when I'm in remote desktop, running Microsoft Access, the screen flickers and after just a few mminutes, blacks out.  I can revive it, but this is not a workable solution. I have a couple of other flat screens monitors I could try - but they are also older.  I'm willing to try them, but don't want to spend the time if someone else has a better idea. Do I need a more up to date monitor or should I suspect the converter cable.....OR is there another solution out there for my 'older' eyes?

Last year, I ordered and installed a Lenovo 19" Flat-Panel monitor (and driver) for my T-61p ThinkPad.  Recently, as a contractor working on an IBM project, I was provided with an R61 ThinkPad and HP 1740 monitor.  The monitor driver that came with the R61 allows me to extend my desktop displays across the R61 screen plus the monitor screen as one contiguous desktop spread across the 2 screens.  The driver that came with my Lenovo 19" monitor only gives me the option of duplicating my T61 desktop screen on my external monitor.  Can I extract/copy the driver from the R61 and install it on the T61?  Or download a free version of the "extended desktop" driver from Lenovo, IBM, or somewhere else?  I've searched the Lenovo site but found no references to driver downloads.

The LCD monitor turns off after a few seconds, with the message, "Monitor is turning off."  Pressing and holding Fn-F3 for a few seconds and releasing them sometimes makes it turn on again, but then it turns off again after a few more seconds.  As a test, I plugged in an external monitor and hit Fn-F7 to make both monitors come on.  The external monitor stays on, but the LCD turns off as before.Power settings are set for "never" on all functions, hiberbation is disabled.Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

I have a dell laptop that has 1920x1080 resolution. However, i connect it to an external monitor that has 1920x1200 resolution. Basically almost everything i do is on my external monitor which acts as my main primary screen. Thus i do sometimes open some windows or drag a window or so to the other screen like youtube etc to the laptop screen which is the secondary monitor.

My issue at the moment is everything is way too big on the laptop screen. I want to have 1920x1080 resolution but its way too big. I googled what is my resolution on it and it shows 1536 x 864. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080? I googled what is my resolution on the external monitor and it does show 1920x1200 which is correct.

My external monitor which is my main monitor is fine at the moment with the 1920x1200. Its windows 10 but im assuming this should be very similar to windows 7 to fix this issue?

i am using a dual display set up, where my Dell Vostro 1500 is the main monitor and my super purdy HP w2207 monitor is the secondary display.in almost every regard, the HP monitor is beautiful -- super bright and super sharp, no flicker, etc, etc.  however... it is noticeably "off" in a few little areas, and i simply do not know what to fix about it to correct the situation.for example, on this site, the posts that are black text on white background color look fine.  the posts that are black text on that light blue color look awful.  its as if each of the letters has a thin, light stroke around them, making it very difficult to read.  this same affect is noticeable in the text "tabs" in my firefox browser -- just difficult to read.also, sites that have intense colors, like http://www.fyrebug.com/, that orange/yellow header looks like neon radiation on this monitor, whether its set as the primary or secondary display.  everything else is just so darned pretty, its just these little details (which add up) that drive me nuts.  any suggestions?

One question the refresh rate of a monitor is how many times the monitors can change in one sec so givel monitors have 60hz refresh rate thats 60 times per second thus changing every 16,7 msec. right?
So now the monitors say they can change the pixel at 5msec. so that would make 200 times per sec equivelant to 200hz??
so where lays the truth.
can or can not a tft monitor change a pixel 200 times per sec? or it is another advertising stund.
cause if a pixel can change 200 times but then is limited by the refresh rate. there is no real reason to advertise that characteristic is it?
thank you

I loaded Win7 three computers, 2 desktops and 1 laptop. My Dell XPS is the one that keeps flashing a black screen from time to time. It seems like it is thinking for a few seconds but when this happens it is like my monitor turns off.

any ideas?

Answer:Monitor flashed Black from time to time

Under display adapters in device manager, is your 6800 M listed as the adapter? I ask because I'm sure it has to be a moblle graphic card and requires a specific moble driver inf file. Which you should beable to get from Dell with your service tag. If it is listed as a VGA then you definetly need the proper driver.

Hi, I have two major issues. I'm connected to an external monitor using a display port to hdmi converter, and an hdmi to dvi cable. When I am on "Energy Saving" (switchable graphics) mode, the external nomitor blinks every 5-10 seconds, but it is perfectly fine when I am under "High Performance" (switchable graphics) mode, so I'm not sure that it's the cables/adapters/monitor that I am using. The second is I cannot change my brightness using fn+home/end when I go through this process: In "Maximum Performance" (power plan) mode (while plugged into ac)unplug acGo into "Maximum Battery Life" (power plan) modeplug in acplug in external display to displayportGo into "High Performance" (switchable graphics) modeuntil I change back into "Maximum Performance"(power plan) mode then back into "Maximum Battery Life" (power plan)mode then back into "High Performance" (switchable graphics) mode. This is a bit annoying, but at least I found the steps to temporarially work around the problem ... edit: Okay it happend to me again, but i can't fix it (haven't tried a reset though, but i don't want to bc I just started the computer and that's ridiculus). Also, I can change the brightness fine when the computer is in Energy Saving" (switchable graphics), but I get the blinking problem, which is why I mentioned it earlier.

My desktop icons are always on my external monitor desktop. I had moved the hdmi cable connected to my laptop i believe which caused all my icons from my external monitor to go on the laptop monitor. Also there is even spacing on all of the icons. Has anyone had this happened? I then clicked sort and then it rearranged so there is no spacing etc. However, i then noticed hey why are my icons on my laptop monitor and not my external monitor.

Does anyone know why this happened? When i open chrome and other programs, it does open up on my external monitor though which is my primary monitor. I believe i can just drag each of the icons on my desktop on my laptop screen to my external monitor. So just do this and that fixes the issue right? Or is there a way to have all the icons just move to the external monitor. The reason i ask this is in case the icons just suddenly move to the laptop screen again.

I have a dell laptop that has 1920x1080 resolution. However, i connect it to an external monitor that has 1920x1200 resolution. Basically almost everything i do is on my external monitor which acts as my main primary screen. Thus i do sometimes open some windows or drag a window or so to the other screen like youtube etc to the laptop screen.
My issue at the moment is everything is way too big on the laptop screen. I want to have 1920x1080 resolution but its way too big. I googled what is my resolution on it and it shows 1536 x 864. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080?
My external monitor which is my main monitor is fine at the moment with the 1920x1200.

Answer:Desktop Icons Rearranged To Laptop Monitor From External Monitor

If you booted up without the external connected, it likely switched the laptop screen to now be the main screen. Just go back in and double check which one is set to main.
I run dual screens on my laptop but leave the laptop screen as main. My external is a smaller screen than my laptops 17 inch screen. It's a portable 15 inch USB screen.
I on occasion boot up my laptop without the external connected. Having the laptop screen as the main screen helps in this situation.
I don't put any ICONS on my desktop, its just my personal preference. I launch my every day Apps/programs from my taskbar.

I have a very strange problem.
My borther was on his user area earlier on, and I managed to get the secondary monitor to be the primary monitor and disable the laptop's monitor in return, however, when it comes to me, it won't happen...

Any help would be much appreiciated.

Answer:Satellite M50-130: No display after switching the external monitor to primary monitor

Hi

Could you please be clearer? Is it possible to see something on the external monitor?
Do you see anything? What happens if you use the display device switch function FN+F5?

I don?t know how you have managed to set the external display as a primary display because on my notebook this option is grayed out.
However, you should see the notebook display if you will boot the notebook in the ?safe mode?. Please check it!

My old dell laptop L502x is a bit quirky and caused me to buy a desktop, however, i think it is still saveable. when i have it display to an external monitor via hdmi, it works 100% with no problems. however, when i use the monitor that is physically attached to the laptop, i will get a " A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor" BSOD. from what i've gathered over numerous crashes, i believe its a problem with the integrated graphics in the processor, since they are not used when outputting via hdmi. i could be wrong tho, any help is greatly appreciated.

After the recent Windows 10 update, my wife's laptop no longer displays on the external monitor. All was well before the update.

I am comfortable that Windows sees the monitor because clicking on Display Settings shows two displays. If I unplug the HDMI cable, only one display is shown.

I have confirmed that the monitor works by trying it with another laptop. I have also changed the HDMI cable between the laptop and the external monitor.

Device manager reports that I have the latest display driver installed.

I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

I'm not sure if I should have put this in "Hardware" or not so...
I am, by far, a professional at this so hang in there with me if I confuse you. A few months ago my children broke the screen on my laptop and for a few weeks I was trying to use the External Monitor so it would show up on a monitor my sister gave me. Well I finally got that up and working however, now when I connect my external hard drive to the laptop, it will not show up on the desktop monitor. (The external hard drive is Western Digital).

This external monitor is a new thing for me, actually I knew you could do it but didn't try it as an option until my nephew - who is much younger than me - thought of it lol. Anyway, I have pictures and such on my external hard drive that were put onto the external by the very laptop I am using. I'm not totally sure of the montior I am using, all I can tell you at the moment is it's a Dell. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A135 S266; the laptop has Vista Home Basic (32 bit) and I believe the desktop monitor is running with Vista too but I'm not sure if that's important since it is only serving as a "view." Anyway, I would love some help with why the drive may not be working with this set up.

Thanks,
Kerri

This may seem like a silly question, have you tried the HD on another PC to see if the issue is with that?
Also, are you saying it's not showing up in 'My Computer', or are you not getting the option to open files?

On the driver page we have this:

If the GPU is HD Graphics 630. Why is the driver 530???

Intel 15.46 supports OpenGL 4.5 and this driver doesn't: Intel-HD-Graphics-530-Driver_28VH9_WIN_21.20.16.4727_A03.EXE
Then we have the following problem when I connect and external monitor to the HDMI port:
The window of Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 when dragged and snapped to the corner of the external monitor turns black but only sometimes. This rendering problem appears to be a driver problem according to Microsoft.

This needs to be addressed by Dell/Intel or NVIDIA as there appear to be many complaints.

Hi I have lenovo ideapad y y500 with 650m sli, which originally had windows 8 but then I updated to windows 8.1 and used the fix for GPU bios provided by this forum. The issue is that both my external and laptop monitors go black when I connect external monitor to my laptop with vga cable.I have had this issue since I updated nvidia driver back in the middle of january. (befor the update it worked fine I had no issues). I only used external monitor occasionally so I decided to wait for nvidia to fix the problem (rolling back to previous nvidia driver version did not help). Well now after 3 new version the problem persists. I tried using  the hot key on my keyboard to change between 4 different monitor-laptop setups (only laptop, only monitor, resize..) and it did not help.  I tried recording my laptop screen when I pluged in the external monitor and the video is normal (it isn't black). I then opend nvidia control panel to see if it recognises external monitor and recorded the screen. My external monitor (samsung) was recognised.Click for video on youtubeIn between black flashes i pluged in/out the external monitor.Translation for "zaslon na prenosniku" : laptop's screen. So any idea how to resolve this problem ? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Cannot use external monitor as the primary monitor with Portege M400

Hi

Maybe is it technical limitation of Intel graphic card. I know for example that on Portege M200 it is not possible to set the external monitor as primary device and the internal screen as secondary device. No way.

Maybe some M400 owner post own experience about that.

Hi, few days ago screen on my notebook Probook 6560b  with discreete GPU 6470M went black.  Monitor does not have any backlight and also there is no picture on it (looking at angle...so it is not faulty backlight). Pulled all devices out (HDD, CD-ROM) but monitor still remains blank (no BIOS screen). On external output (VGA or DP) there is pictrure, but it can not load any Windows (I have dualboot Windows 10 and WindowsXP). In Windows 10 shows error: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE What failed: atikmpag.sys. In Windows XP, also blue screen with error in atikmpag.sys. So, I booted in SafeMode and remove Radeon HR6470M driver and put Standard VGA driver. Now PC boots to OS, but still only on external monitor. Tried to reinstall drivers, but it always fails with blank screen and PC freeze. With some many tries and restarts, in one moment notebook monitor starts to working again. But only up to next Windows restart.I tried to put new HDD in it and install fresh Windows...but same thing. Booted from live linux distro...only external monitor works. So, as I can see, external monitors on VGA or DP can work but only with generic VGA drivers. OS correctly recognize graphic card, but when driver is installed external monitor also goes blank and windows freezes (not responding on caps/num lock, no longer pingable on network). As in one moment internal monitor went back online it seams that maybe is some bad connections...but where...GPU or video memory? Also tried HP diagnostic... Hi, all, I have a Dell XPS 15 laptop and recently bought a Asus MB169B external USB monitor.  When I plug the monitor in, the laptop monitor (not the external monitor) flickers about every half second.  If I unplug it, it stops.  I upgraded my video driver to no avail.
Is it simply a power supply issue (the external monitor  does not have a power cord)?  Anything I can do?  It does it even if I have the laptop plugged in and charging.
*something interesting - I just discovered if I duplicate the display and not extend the flickering goes away...but that kind of defeats the point of a dual monitor for me.
Thanks.

Hey,

I have a Qosmio G50-10H, running windows 7 32-bit. After connecting an external monitor the internal laptop screen goes almost black. It's possible to see some elements on screen, but it's to dark grey to work on. It does not respond much to color or brightness adjustment (black to really dark grey). The main trouble is when disconnection the external monitor the internal monitor still is dark grey and still isn't responding much to adjustments. It's so dark on the brigthest adjustments that it is impossible to work on. I have downloaded latest driver for support, but still same problem.

Any suggestions?

Hi All,
I have an external Envision flatscreen monitor that I have been using attached to my laptop for around a year. I have the monitor displaying on both laptop and the external Monitor. Just recently I had a pc issue which I have rectified and my external monitor since rectifying that issue now displays fuzzy. What can I troubleshoot to find out my issue. I've reviewed the Graphics and Display Properties. It is currently sitting at 1024 by 768, Color: True Color and Refresh 60HZ. The odd thing is that when I am in Display Properties, Settings tab, the left monitor in top is black (this should be my laptop) and the right monitor in the pic, which should be my external monitor is gr3y. When I have pressed on the black monitor, and press Identify it indicates 1. When I press on the grey monitor and press identify, it says it is not active, although I do have an image on my external monitor (fuzzy image). When I click the arrow on 'Extend my Windows Desktop this monitor' the right monitor then is black and when I press on it and press 'Identify' it says it is 1 as well. Is this correct. I know this has nothing to do with the fuzziness but still thought I might see if this is an issue or not.
When I right click on my desktop and go into Graphics Properties - I just get confused as to what this is all about. When I go into Display Tab the Monitor is checked, I can check on any of the others i.e. Notebook, Intel Dual display clone or Extended Desktop. Re... Read more

I need to use an external monitor as my primary and I have Windows XP installed on my 3000 N100. How do I do it?Thanks in advance,Lynn

Answer:Can I use an external monitor as my primary monitor in Windows XP

Yes. This should be an option under the software driving your graphics adapter.   There is more than one way to access that.  Shut your laptop off, connect your external display to it, start the display & then the laptop..  The laptop may well show you a dialogue asking how you wish to use the external monitor, just follow the dialogue to use an external monitor as a primary one.  If not, open Control Panel, then open 'Display', go to the 'Settings' tab, where your choices will be displayed.   Some monitors have downloadable drivers that provide more options that your basic operating system provides.

On three occasions my monitor [LG Flatron 1710B] has gone blank with the on of switch just flashing and whatever I do I cannot get a picture. As it is still under warranty LG have swapped it over and all has been fine. However when it failed again today I plug it into another pc and it worked. So I then plugged it back in to the original pc and it worked fine again. It seems to occur on boot up. I am running win xp sp1, mesh athlon xp 2200 computer with radeon 9000 series video card.Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is happening.

Answer:Monitor goes blank fom time to time

I sometimes see this on various machines I work on but the monitor recovers. You perhaps need the latest drivers for the graphics card and monitor. Pressing the monitor power switch sometimes cures it. Hold it for 5 seconds and then if it doesn`t come on press it again to power up. It wouldn`t hurt to upgrade to SP2 either!

Dell Dimension 4100 PIII 866 MHz, XP Pro, NViIDIA GeForce MX 440

This is my problem: I have the power saving settings set to turn off my monitor after 20 min. It does briefly turn off, only to turn on again 1 sec. later, displaying a faint very dark blue screen... It used turn off fine, but after upgrading from Windows 98SE to XP Pro I got this problem. Is this the OS or my video card?

Any clues?

Thanks all

Answer:"Turn monitor off" setting doesn't really turn off

Did you upgrade to XP right over the top of 98 or was it a clean install? If you did an upgrade over the top of 98 (and I know you don't want to hear this lol) then you should format and do a clean install. Upgrades rarely leave you with a stable system.

Things to try before you do that though:

1) Make sure your video card drivers are up to date.

2) Make sure Windows is updated - go to windowsupdate

3) try the system file checker (Start, Run, "sfc /scannow" [without the quotes]) to make sure your system files are intact.

Other than that I would say just do a format and install XP from scratch (to be honest, you should do this anyway if you haven't already, you'll get much better stability and performance).

Hi,

I've set Turn off the display setting in my power plan to 15 minutes and my monitor does turn off after that period (sometimes it doesn't!), but then, sometimes, it turns ON by itself after few minutes.

I've been Google-ing these days trying to find some solution and I came across suggestions which recommends that Allow this device to wake the computer option, located in the Power management tab, in the Properties window of the network adapter, in the Device manager, should be disabled. Also, there were suggestions that Wake on Magic packet property in the Advanced tab should be disabled, too. Unfortunately, all that did not work in my case.

Does somebody know what can cause this problem? Has anyone ever encountered such phenomena?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Monitor turn on by itself after "Turn off the display" starts

Hello alokin87 & welcome to Sevenforums,

Sometimes the computer Wake from standby because of a program's updating itself. Sometimes it does wake, sometimes it does not!

Therefore it could be the Windows Media center as explained in this Hotfix from MS. You could give a try:

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-u...ly-2010-a.html

Look at post #1:

"-Do you find that your Windows 7 Computer wakes up from sleep unexpectedly at a particular time every day? If so then you might to check up if any scheduled tasks are waking your PC up."

Hello,

I'm new to this forum.

I have a 100GB internal HDD. I have two external drives which are a 160GB, and a 2TB. I don't know what I'm doing to swap out the drives to give me a larger space. I don't have a screw driver, or tools either, and my PC is very small, so I would have a difficult time swapping out the drives. I don't know how to word my questions. Would it be possible to blank out my internal drive, and then use my external drive for what I would normally an internal for, but in this case it would be external? Or another way to look at is could I trick my external by thinking it's internal even though it's not? Or what are some other ways that I might be able to get that larger drive? I have to admit I'm not good at all with opening up my PC. I saw the inside when someone took off the cover, and where the drive goes it compact which is really small area to work, and tight.

Thank you if someone could reply back!

Answer:Is it possible to turn an external HDD into an OS?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

You can't install the operating system to a drive that that appears as removable to Windows 7 e.g. a USB hard drive.

You may get away with using an eSata drive if it can be configured so that it appears as an internal drive, but my knowledge doesn't extend any further than that.

You would also take a performance hit.

Without the tools and the confidence to do the job yourself, you'd be far better to get your local repair technician to do the job for you, i.e. install a bigger internal hard drive.

All of a sudden my external hardrive won't turn on. There's still a light on each end of the usb cord, but that's it. I have checked the obvious stuff like is the power on and is it plugged in.

I want to make sure the HD is still OK. Is there a post here somewhere on how to connect a second HD to your computer?

Answer:external HD won't turn on

When you say

won't turn onClick to expand...

, do you mean it has no power or it is not being detected by the o/s.

Firstly, your external HDD has a seperate power brick? is there a light on the casing of the external HDD. If you put your hand on the casing can you feel the HDD spinning??
