What happened since September 2017?

Question: What happened since September 2017?

I am having to do a search in my browser TWICE before it sticks. Visited links no longer change colors. There is NO DOUBT something that has changed with the Microsoft updates. So, in all of the messing around Microsoft does to "fix" security,
they have now managed to screw up IE 11.
No amount of changing colors and accessibility resolve the change of colors satisfactorily. If I get the colors to change for the visited links, the colors of the web pages are messed up. Other clicks and colors only make matters worse so that
now my email format is screwed. So are most of the web pages I visit.
You people definitely did something and I just don't know if I do a system restore all the way back to August will fix the problem. I don't know if I have to remove all the Updates that Microsoft has told me I needed. I do not want to reset IE.
That is only as the last resort and I am not confident that will fix the problem since I clicked and changed colors in all manner of scenarios and I just want my computer browsing to go back to the way it looked for the past year or more.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

*Be sure to use only ONE Anti Virus program at any one time*

While MSE/Defender come pre installed with Windows, Microsoft has decided to turn Security Essentials into a "baseline" program and it does not intend to be the best antivirus program in the business. Instead the company is just sharing its virus tracking findings with the security industry so they can develop better antivirus programs. Basically, if you want better virus and malware protection, look elsewhere than the built-in program offered by Microsoft, here are some suggestions...

Hi everyone, i have quite a few questions so i'll post separate threads rather than pollute one thread. I'm wanting to get something a lot better than windows defender. Comcast is my ISP so i can get NIS for free. As most of you are aware of Norton hasn't been doing a great job these days. There has been multiple vulnerabilities in its products that actually decreases the security of windows. Still NIS still does a pretty good job of scoring pretty well in the various test in terms of protection. I was thinking on going with either bitdefender or KIS but of course i would have to pay for those. If you were me would opt for NIS because its still pretty dang good and worlds better than bit defender or would you opt for one of the better products like KIS or bitdefender?

Good evening everyone. Thanks for your access to this thread. I hope you to read and answer for this question.

I want to ask everyone that which software should I use for keeping security of my PC.

Now I am using Bitdefender Total Security 2017 as main anti-malware soft on my main desktop PC.
And also I was using F-secure SAFE as anti-malware soft on my PC until last week.

Yesterday, I heard that new Avast Antivirus 2017 was released, and new Avast Free is including behaviour scanning system.

I am having trouble deciding which software should I use as anti-malware soft.
Please tell me about your recommend.

I think that...

?Protection features
Better : Bitdefender 2017 > F-secure SAFE > Avast Free 2017

?Performance and speed
Lighter : Avast Free 2017 > F-secure SAFE > Bitdefender 2017

?the risk of false positive trouble
Bigger risk : F-secure SAFE > Avast Free 2017 > Bitdefender 2017

?SSL (HTTPS) Scanning is enable without fake SSL certificate to browser
Unnecessary fake certificate : Avast Free, F-secure
Need fake certificate : Bitdefender Total

F-secure SAFE is the very nice solution as protection from malwares and keeping speedy PC. But it is having big risk of false positive ratings; especially the website blocking is not good with many many false positive ratings. And, sometimes slow down my PC.

Bitdefender Total Security 2017 is the best solution as protection from malwares. This software is providing users very nice anti-malware solu... Read more

Answer:Avast Free 2017 vs F-secure SAFE vs Bitdefender Total Security 2017

Quick question, why Bitdefender Total Protection? Do you need ALL those additional features, or looking for an Antivirus only, because there are Bitdefender Antivirus Plus and Free versions.

What about other protection software like Emsisoft Anti-Malware/Internet Security or ESET Nod32 Antivirus/Internet Security?

So I had Emsisoft for couple of months now
But Recently I've switched over to Avast Premier Beacuse I've never used Avast before So I wanted to try It out
But now I'm without any AV As I do not know what to Install Avast or Emsisoft!
I have licences for both So thats not the problem
Thanks In Advance And btw This forum really nice.

Answer:Avast Premier 2017 Vs Emsisoft Internet Security 2017

Both have excellent protection functions, but certainly they are two different security solutions.
I think the choice of one or the other one is really subjective, I've used Emsisoft for many years and it is my first choice

A couple of years ago I moved myself and some of the fam from Apple Everything to Windows 10. Yesterday however, I bought an new 2017 iPad. I really love the Surface devices, so why?
LEAVING THE PLATFORM BECAUSE OF WINDOWS MOBILE
First, because Microsoft are no longer supporting the phones that are in our house, we are being forced from that platform. So rather than living and breathing completely and happily inside the Microsoft ecosystem, I am now forced to diversify and go elsewhere. This really is a big deal, and changes my thinking from the unthinkable (leaving the MS ecosystem) to the possible (shifting back towards Apple). That being the case, why should I then buy a Microsoft Surface tablet (I was planning to buying a new Surface Pro M3) when I an now FORCED to be open to Apple and Android?
EASE OF MOVING PLATFORMS
Second, Microsoft have made my leap back to Apple so easy, because they have done what Apple and Google have refused to do, which is to make their software available on the others' platforms. Thus the transition to iPad is easy. For example, Word and PowerPoint are effectively free (via my 365 account that I will not be renewing at full cost next time; I will use the academic version which costs me almost nothing). Outlook on iPad is a great app (better than on PC platform). Lots of other apps that Microsoft that I use are also really nice on iPad (e.g. Wunderlist) and made the transition really simple and clean.

Third, the Facebook app on iPad is ... Read more

Answer:I did the unthinkable and chose a 2017 iPad over a 2017 Surface Pro M3

Can't make sense of that. Presumably you have really old windows phones that no longer get updates?
And what does that have to do with what tablet you use? Windows has timeline, cloud clipboard and a whole host of platform agnostic features coming this fall, so Windows will play nice with android or ios (better than those OSes play with any other).
You don't even need your tablet, desktop and phone to be the same platform. You just need the same services, which for MSFT, exist on every platform.

On my Windows 10 pro PC, I'm running (BDTS 2017 + Voodoo Shield Pro + Malwarebytes 3), and this combo is very smooth for me, but when I saw the results of MT tests here : AV Test - MalwareTips - Bitdefender Report - March 2017 and here : AV Test - MalwareTips - Kaspersky Report - March 2017, I think that these tests demonstrated that Kaspersky did a better job then Bitdefender
So my question is to know if it is a good idea to replace BD by KIS on my config ?

Good evening everyone! Thank you for your access to here and reading my post.
Tonight, I want to ask you that how much the Avast Free Antivirus reaches some solid anti-malware software, which are the paid version.

Now I am using F-secure SAFE as Trial license on desktop PC, which is one of the mine.
It seems to nice for protect PC and F-secure SAFE is light despite it is one of the very strong scanning system as consumers.

But now, I am worrying about false blocking by browsing protection of F-secure SAFE.
In usually, f-secure is not making something to bad situation for me, I am feeling it.
But the Browsing protection feature of F-secure SAFE blocks websites too many times.
The most of sites, which were blocked by F-secure are obviously safe. Of cause, they are judged safe sites by other major antimalware soft (e.g. Avast, Bitdefender Total Security).

So I want to compare them; Avast Free Antivirus 2017 and F-secure SAFE 2017(or Internet Security 2017).
I want to ask you that which is the more strong software under the below situation...

1.
OS is Windows10 Home and updated with latest security patch.
2.
Main browser is the latest of Mozilla Firefox with ublock origin.
3.
If I use Avast Free 2017, I will configure some setting (e.g. File Shield, Mail Shield, Web Shield, and Behavior Shield) to aggressive security level. For example, I will configure by referring to this page avast! Optimal Protection settings by RejZoR

I read on softpedia.com that Windows 7 Gold will be released on September 1. I don't understand the article but it mentioned Windows 7 Gold editions. Does that mean that we the regular customers can get ahold of Windows 7 (any version/all versions)? Legally of course. I am getting ready to buy Win 7 Ultimate cause it has everything so I don't want to get my hopes up for Sept 1. What does this mean? I just wanna know when I can get the software. I don't want a beta or an pre-release, the final thing, case closed. Please assist.

Answer:Windows 7 on September 1

Not sure. But i read somewhere that RTM will be available on Technet/MSDN 1 month after RTM is announced. So I can see that being close to true.

Retail is October 22nd. So if you plan to buy online or in a store, that's as early as you can get it.

My Vista hasn't update since September. I recently have tried debugging the problem but have had no luck finding an answer on the internet, so, I turn to you.

The error it gets when trying to update is Error 80070424. The most failed update, in the update log is Definition update for Windows Defender (KB915597).

The first update to fail is Microsoft Net Framework 3.5 SP1, (KB951847)
Windows Defender is also either deleted, corrupt, or completely missing from my computer.

I tried running Windows One Live Scanner, which took about 4 hours to complete, and it found 6 errors but when attempting to correct them IE crashed.

I'm out of ideas, anyone have any?

I installed the September XP updates and rebooted as per normal.

Windows was very reluctant to restart. Went to Safe Mode. Nothing obvious. Restarted. Windows really seemed to struggle to get started. The logo displayed very faintly for what seemed like a very long time and the whole start sequence seemed quite different.

Checked the updates but couldn't see one that would impact on the startup.

Eventually Windows started and has been working normally for about an hour. I am just a little concerned about the unusual behavior after applying the updates.

Already installed this update on my Windows 10, 7 and Vista computers but not on my XP.
Thanks in advance.

I actually hide the MSRT update in Windows XP and 7 and 10 because it's not really needed.

Windows XP SP3 32-bit does still receive monthly updates, but it needs to be tweaked to do so.

This copy of windows must be activated with microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate windows now?

and lastly:

A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. error code 0x8000.

All our machines have been running great for awhile. These three users don't report of anything they installed knowingly. I was able to boot in safe mode then do a system restore to an earlier date and the machines then booted up fine. Any ideas?
Did microsoft push down some sort of update?

Answer:xp pro boot issues on september 2, 2010

The last critical updates I loaded from Microsoft...loaded fine and were done yesterday, via Windows Update and Microsoft Update websites. I don't do autoupdates.<<Did microsoft push down some sort of update?>>Not sure what that means...installation of all updates (critical and optional) is always at the command of the user.<<Windows cannot load the users profile but has logged you in with the default profile...>>Typically occurs when user profile is damaged and needs to be replaced.<<This copy of windows must be activated with microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate windows now?>>Typically, I've seen this one with OEM machines (HP, eMachines, etc.) where the OEM setup has gone awry. OEM websites may provide more info on this error message.<<A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. error code 0x8000.>>http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914232Louis

Hi

I have had problems with my laptop and have reached the point where I just have to accept that something needs to be done about it!! I've done searches in the past to try and diagnose it myself so that I don't have to "bother" anyone - but I'm just running around in circles!

I've followed all the instructions on how to makes this easier for you guys, so I hope you will have everything you need!!

These BSOD issues have ranged from IRQ issues, to RAM issues as well (I think) and invariably happen randomly with no obvious cause.

I did the System Spec thing that you have suggested as well - but I see it didn't fill everything in - so if there's anything you need from that, please let me know and I will do my best to provide whatever information is needed.

I have also attached the Dump File info for you to check.

Hope that covers everything - and just want to thank you in advance for whatever help you can send my way!

Am I missing something here, or does other computer enthusiasts like myself, have trouble in installing Avonquest Fix-it Utilities 7.0 Express, from the DVD on September issue of PC Advisor. It states that a serial number, to run the software would be given to you after registration. I think mine must have got lost in the post. I have actually installed, registered and waited for confirmation of the serial number, then uninstalled again, and repeated this operation on three occasions, but to NO avail. Although I have always purchased PC Advisor, every month, for several years, I also purchased another PC magazine, LAST MONTH, for Avonquest Fix-it utilities 7.0, and it would not fulfil its obligation re serial number either. This is the SECOND time in the course of a year, that free software with PC Advisor has failed to operate, and if it is a ploy to sell their magazine, then I will be looking for a more reliable magazine.

According to Compal president

According to Ray Chen, president of Taiwanese notebook maker Compal, Microsoft could start shipping Windows 7 in late Q3.

“According to current planning, it should be late September or early October,” said Chen, and Microsoft has not confirmed nor denied his claims. Chen expects the new OS could boost PC sales, although he expects global notebook shipments will grow just slightly, by 5 million, from 120 million in 2008 to 125 million units in 2009.

Windows 7 was originally expected to launch in early 2010, 3 years after Vista, which launched in January 2007. Recent reports, however, indicate Microsoft could launch a few months earlier.

The new OS is seen by punters as "Vista done right", as it has much better performance than Vista, and it reportedly has somewhat lower hardware requirements, which means a lot in the netbook/notebook market.

Answer:Microsoft may ship Windows 7 in September

If the RC comes out in April and there are no major issues, its going to launch even earlier than that. My gut tells me that Microsoft would love to be able to get it out by late July in time for the back to school rush in the US at least. Maybe that's a little tight but if things go well I think it can be done and not rushed, once again provided that there are no major issues. The beta is proving to be very solid, and to me build 7022 was noticeably better and that build is going on 6 weeks old so there is progress that can be see in just these two pretty old builds. I think MS is pretty much near the end of the road right now with Windows 7.

I am praying that I will be able to upgrade to the 1mb service (from 512kb) when BT update their online checkers on 6th September 2004. When I go to click here and enter my telephone number I get the following message: "Congratulations, you are in a broadband enabled area. However, there appears to be a compatibility issue with your phone line. This could be caused by a DACS unit, Home Highway, an existing xDSL connection or many other things. This will need to be resolved before xDSL broadband can be installed." I am just wondering if this is a 'normal' message or does it not look hopeful for me? I don't have a Home Highway service or a DACS unit (whatever these are!) Any comments? CW

Answer:1mb broadband service after 6th September 2004?

I get it too presumably because I already have an existing 512kbs ADSL as it appears have you.

I have Windows XP. I want to download Vista to try it out. Do i understand the following correctly:
'i can go to a official Windows site, legally download Vista operating system, and instead of WInXP on my computer, i will have Vista. There is a good possibilty the Vista will have bugs, cause some computer troubles and a full reformat might be necessary at some point, if not almost immediately'

I used todays date on my thread post for search purposes, that is other posters with the same question about downloading Vista. To answer the question about downloading Vista seems to change by date.
I am looking at downloading this "Windows Vista RC1, English 32-Bit Edition" at the link here: http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/rc1/en/download.htm . My computer now has WINXP,orginal Operating system,i believe its a 32 bit computer(although i have yet educated myself into what 32 bit means, although its better than a 8bit and 64 bit is better)
If i understand threads i have read about downloading Vista, there seems to be a concern about the key. 'The Key' to enter after you download Vista will be released at a future date. If that is true, why download Vista now.

Gandalph are you there?Someone has to detect new "threats" to make sure they are real and no diubt do a few tests to make sure all is ok.Then they release a new update! On the other hand maybe there is nothing new out there so no update needed.

ZoneAlarm ExtremeSecurity 2013 11.0.780.000
"
Dr.Web InternetSecurity 8.2 added new autorun location rules and this improvement caused
it to go up 13 % inthe overall score from 11 % to its current 24 %.
Definitely a goodway to go, but why not to cover even more autorun locations?
They are all very well known today and it should be no problem to add them to the ruleset.
Implementing aparent process control or otherwise protecting trusted applications from being misused by untrusted would also help a lot.
ZoneAlarm ExtremeSecurity remained on its 34% score.
It holds this position for quite a while now.
It might be a good time to move forward and implement some additional protection.
How about to review product's files and registry entries and secure them against malicious manipulation?
There are a few other holes that could be fixed and move this product up in the score.
Avira InternetSecurity went the opposite way ? from its previously 9% score to today's 6 %.
One of the worst onthis field.

F-Secure Internet Security 2014 is the first product marked with 2014 label in our test.
It comes with a slightly improved protection against basic termination techniques and thus it finished with 5 %, which is 2 % better than its 2013 version.

Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

This security update is rated Critical for Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 8, and Internet Explorer 9 on Windows clients and Moderate for Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 8, and Internet Explorer 9 on Windows servers. on the Web. I ran a scan at Windows Update and asked for other critical updates (not SP2, in other words), and WU suggested the BITS update and the GDI+ Tool update.

I tried to get feedback about these here yesterday, but only got one reply.

Do you know anything about these and XP SP1?
How about XP SP2?

Hi Guys,

The mainsite has a post for @ http://www.majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_Security_&_Critical_Releases_ISO_d5214.html and I was wandering what exactly is it, is it all the updates 'After' SP2? I don't know if I should grab it or not, as far as I can tell if I had this, all I do is Format, Install XP Pro SP2, then put the new CD called "Microsoft Security & Critical Releases ISO September 06" and it will put all the updates on my PC, so when I do go to update online, then it won't be a massive download, only updates since past "12-9-2006"?

Or am I mis-interprating something?

Thanks Guys,

Dave

Answer:Microsoft Security & Critical Releases ISO September 06 HELP

Its a collection of the current released security updates from this month, this ISO is generally used if you have multiple PCs to update as it saves downloading them multiple times, it is not a cummulative list of updates from SP2 to yesterday. Reason its a large file is that it covers all OSes from MS including WinXP, Server 2003, XP64, Win2000 that gained updates as well as multiple languages ( can be as many as 24 different langauges for eachg update ) of those updates for System Admins to install on multiple PCs.

if you have only 1 PC its best and easier to visit Microsoft Update and do them online.

The plugin everyone loves to hate will be dealt another blow come September 1st, this time from Google, who will start to pause all Flash ads in Chrome by default on that date. This will come as welcome news to everyone that supports websites by not blocking ads, but have to deal with rogue ads that autoplay, or even redirect users to other pages.
By default, all ads uploaded to Google's adwords are converted to HTML5 already, so this leaves other ad providers with the ultimatum of requiring advertisers to follow suit, or bear the consequences.
Adobe's Flash is notoriously troublesome for the people that use it, often being targeted for exploits, so much so that Mozilla force-blocked the plugin for all versions older than the most recent earlier last month.

Microsoft Security Bulletins for September 2005

On 13 September 2005 Microsoft is planning to release:
No new security updates on September 13th as part of the September monthly bulletin release cycle.
This represents a change in the information found in the Advance Notification on Thursday, September 8, 2005. Late in the testing process, Microsoft encountered a quality issue that necessitated the update to go through additional testing and development before it is released. Microsoft is committed to only releasing high quality updates that fix the issue(s) in question, and therefore we feel it is in the best interest of our customers to not release this update until it undergoes further testing.

Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

Note that this tool will NOT be distributed using Software Update Services (SUS).

The Android Security Bulletin contains details of security vulnerabilities affecting Android devices. Alongside the bulletin, we have released a security update to Nexus devices through an over-the-air (OTA) update. The Nexus firmware images have also been released to the Google Developer site. Security Patch Levels of September 06, 2016 or later address these issues. Refer to the documentation to learn how to check the security patch level. Supported Nexus devices will receive a single OTA update with the September 06, 2016 security patch level.

Partners were notified about the issues described in the bulletin on August 05, 2016 or earlier. Where applicable, source code patches for these issues have been released to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) repository. This bulletin also includes links to patches outside of AOSP.

The most severe of these issues is a Critical security vulnerability that could enable remote code execution on an affected device through multiple methods such as email, web browsing, and MMS when processing media files.

We have had no reports of active customer exploitation or abuse of these newly reported issues. Refer to theAndroid and Google service mitigations section for details on the Android security platform protections and service protections such as SafetyNet, which improve the security of the Android platform.

We encourage all customers to accept these updates to their devices.... Read more

macOS 10.13 High Sierra is coming on September 25

Today, Apple held its big September hardware event, where it announced a trio of new iPhones, an Apple Watch that offers cellular connectivity, and an Apple TV that supports 4K and HDR streaming. Afterward, it released GM seeds for the next versions of the operating systems that those products use, including iOS 11, watchOS 4, and tvOS 11.

Oddly enough, macOS 10.13 High Sierra was left off of the list, and while Apple publicly announced a September 19 release date for the other three, macOS wasn't mentioned at all during the keynote.

Now, the firm has updated the High Sierra listing on its website to say that it will be available on September 25. If you're currently running the beta, you'll likely see the GM seed in about a week.

One of the key features of High Sierra will be the Apple File System (APFS), which is built on a 64-bit architecture and is meant to be more responsive and secure. It also brings support for the next generation of Apple's graphics engine, called Metal 2, along with virtual reality support and more.

Answer:macOS 10.13 High Sierra is coming on September 25

I am looking forward to the GM build because the one I have (latest is 17A360a) as a Public beta, is buggy and slow. Certainly made my MBP slower.

Microsoft Security Advisory (925444)
Vulnerability in the Microsoft DirectAnimation Path ActiveX Control Could Allow Remote Code Execution
Published: September 14, 2006

Microsoft is investigating new public reports of vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer on Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, on Windows XP Service Pack 1, and on Windows XP Service Pack 2. Customers who are running Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 in their default configurations, with the Enhanced Security Configuration turned on, are not affected. We are also aware of proof of concept code published publicly but we are not aware of any attacks attempting to use the reported vulnerability or of customer impact at this time. We will continue to investigate these public reports.

The ActiveX control is the Microsoft DirectAnimation Path ActiveX control, which is included in Daxctle.ocx.

Upon completion of this investigation, Microsoft will take the appropriate action to help protect our customers. A security update will be released through our monthly release process or an out-of-cycle security update will be provided, depending on customer needs.

Mitigating Factors:

? In a Web-based attack scenario, an attacker would have to host a Web site that contains a Web page that is used to exploit this vulnerability. An attacker would have no way to force users to visit a malicious Web site. Instead, an attacker would have to persuade them to visit the Web site, typically by ... Read more

The "Aurora" vulnerability, patched on Tuesday, was reported to Microsoft on 26 August 2009. MS planned to patch it in February 2010.Microsoft today admitted it knew of the Internet Explorer flaw used in the attacks against Google and Adobe since September last year.Microsoft Knew of IE Zero-Day Flaw Since September

Answer:Microsoft knew about the "Aurora" vulnerability since september

What does it mean? Does it mean that Microsoft is not serious about the security of its customers? Or does it mean, that they thought it was not so serious exploit?

Once again, the never-ending saga of Windows Updates continuing to "Check for Updates" hour after hour after hour - with no results - is again plaguing me.

(I've already run the program in Brink's article [i.e. Option # 3] and cleared/reset the WU cache). Also have run sfc /scannow - no issues reported. I've also changed the WU setting in the Control Panel to "Never check for updates", and restarted the computer.

Does anyone here have any step-by-step instructions for me to try and resolve this problem and get those blasted updates installed?

Thank you for your time and any assistance.

Answer:Windows Updates (September 2016); Keeps checking for hours - Any help

When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.
Windows Update Settings - Change
After restart verify that the windows update service is not running if it is Stop and switch to Manual apply and okay.
Make sure KB3020369 is installed if not manually install it this is the main article page with all versions,
