I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Any 3.5" drive at 2T or under should work fine. Upgrading the CPU would mean buying used - these CPUs went out of production not long after your system was current - and that was a decade ago.

This hard drive originally was in my brother's computer. He had XP installed, went to install Windows 7 and after the first reboot, it would just hang on the bios screen.

I played with the jumper settings and such, nothin'. Put it in a few other computers, nothin'.

I was just curious, is it something that can be fixed or should I lay it on my desk to hold down some papers?

I just bought a couple Barracuda drives on eBay and want to install in my desk top LeNovo computer.
There is a couple cables free but only one fits the drive. The other 4-pin ones don't. There must be some sort of adapter for this.
Appreciate some help.
Thanks,

Hi,

I want/need to replace my PC's internal hard disk drive as it's been faulty for some time. My main problem is finding out exactly what to replace it with.

According to "msinfo" it is a Seagate Barracuda (ST3200822AS) but this exact model is discontinued so I need to find a close match that will definitely work with my PC.

A quick Google search turned up this page which gives all the specs of the drive but I'm not sure what the essential things are that need to be the same to make sure my new HDD will work.

That's not necessarily an error message..

Can you see anything that would show the controller recognising the attahced Seagate? Do you see the drive in Windows?

Hi,

I'd like to upgrade my current HD to the Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive. My computer is 7 years old this June, so I'm curious about whether it's compatible or not. My current HD's specs are located here: http://support.mpccorp.com/apps/specs.asp?ID=1971

Specifically: Embedded Controller Interface: (40 pin) EIDE
Physical Dimensions (H x W x D): 1" x 5.78" x 4"

I have the most recent BIOS update for my computer which was released in 2002. I run XP SP2, PIII 735 MHz, 256 Megs RAM. Do you think this upgrade would work or would I just need to toss the idea and get a new computer?

Also, the HD's specs are located here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8004679&type=product&id=1155848396138

Thanks so much,
James

Answer:Seagate 250GB Internal Ultra ATA Hard Drive

The 7200 hard drive wil give better data transfer, but on your system, p111, 735mhz, increasing your ram would help, I would say, more.
XP runs better with more memory.
Upgrading to a later cpu, and motherboard, would give your old pc, a new lease of life.

Hi

I have searched long and hard and need help please.

I have a P4 2.8 CPU with 512 DDR400 Ram and WinXP Pro installed. My hard drive is a Seagate Barracuda 120GB (Ultra) ATA. I have replaced cable to manufacturer's spec Ultra ATA cable, black interface used for master and jumper on Cable Select. I do not use the slave on this cable. I have checked BIOS and auto detected drive again. All seems fine here.

I have tested transfer rate on this drive with HD tach and HD Tune and get around 2.8 MB/sec. I experience very slow boot up and PC in general is very slow to start and execute programs.

I have removed all spyware and other threats with no effect.

Answer:Hard Drive transfer rate very slow (Seagate Barracuda 120GB)

Make sure you have hard disk DMA enabled in BIOS and see if Windows is using it.

I really want to buy one of these, I saw it on NewEgg.com for a bargain of only $220, but I have some concerns on whether or not it would be compatible with my computer. I bought a Linksys WMP54G a few months ago (not that that is particularly relavent) and we had to take the shell off and whatnot. I decided to ask for one for Christmas but my mom seems less than a little enthusiastic about it. The hard drive that came with my computer originally had 32.6 GB, but after all the Windows and HP software additions, not to mention about a hundred CD's and several video games, it's down to only 3.6 GB- which is still a lot, I think, but I would like one with a lot more memory for more video games and stuff that I plan on purchasing later on (I plan on keeping this machine through college where I will probably need a lot of memory since I'm going in for digital media arts) and a lot more RAM (see last comment in parenthesis), my computer can run extremely slow at times (like everyone else's.) I thought I would just consult the people that know about this stuff best before I go and make a potential mistake. Here is the hard drive. Any help and information is appreciated.

Thanks,
Ron

The Acer C: drive is now full and the Data D: drive is empty, but it is not recognizing it automatically. This computer is my brother's, he bought it new and has it at my house. It came formatted with no disc's and I'm not sure where his books for it are. Can anyone tell me how to activate the second hard drive so I can use itunes and download video, etc.

It would be very much appreciated. My brother uses the computer here but it has been here for at least 3 years maybe and the book is misplaced. He mostly uses it for youtube, facebook, and stuff like that and is less computer educated than I am at tech stuff, which isn't saying much.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Boot into Bios, usually by hitting F8 as soon as the POST screen appears and see if the hard drives are both recognised. If the spare drive does not show in the Bios it either has a fault or it is not correctly connected.

What OS is on the PC.

I recently purchased a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 hard drive and a Sabrent USB 3.0 SATA Hard Drive flat docking station to connect via usb to my Dell XPS L702x laptop. Upon putting the hard drive in the external enclosure and connecting to my laptop via usb my computer is not recognizing this external hard drive in disk management. I can see it in device manager and it is listed as "Jmicron SCSI Disk Device". I can also see it in devices and printer listed as "Jmicron". However it is not recognized or listed in disk management and file explorer. I am a novice when it comes to hardware issues as I am more of a software guy but I have tried everything I can find on the net to no avail. ie uninstalling and installing the drivers, using seagate utilities (I cannot also see it in Seagates applications), disabling fast startup, windows devices and printers troubleshooting, etc. I suspect (maybe incorrectly) that this device is showing up as "Jmicron SCSI disk device" instead of a SATA drive but that is coming from someone who again does not know alot about the device/hardware side. I would like to make this external drive a full backup for my windows 10 laptop and any assistance that could be provided would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for any help you may be!

I've been getting this "Windows - Delayed Write Failed" error for quite some time. It's strange though, because it seems to be happening totally randomly.

Here's what happens:

I could be using firefox 2 mins after I start up my computer or be playing a game 4 hours after I start my computer and then a delayed write failed error (or several) suddenly appears from the taskbar in the lower right corner of the screen, failing to write either a system file of some sort or a file related to whatever program I happen to be using at the time. Then everything becomes extremely choppy and eventually totally freezes up. I then have to manually restart at which point it will either work normally or be slow and then freeze up during startup. For some reason, moving my HDs to different SATA ports (since my mobo has 4 ports) tends to fix the problem for a while before it starts happening again.

Does anyone happen to have any idea how to resolve this problem or what is causing it? Is my HD failing, does it have to do with my drivers/firmware/bios, or is it some sort of software bug or conflict?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

(btw there don't seem to be any problems with the disk when I check it with chkdsk or the seagate disk checking utility)

This can't be good...

I'd like to get a 250GB SSD in my T450s when I order it, but Lenovo is charging $280 for the upgrade. So I'm thinking to order a T450s with a conventional 500GB spinning hard drive and buy a Crucial 256GB SSD elsewhere for $105. I would save $175 plus have a 500GB hard drive which I could erase and format and put into an external enclosure and use for other stuff. My question is -- I'm going to order the T450s with the Windows 7 Professional installation, so can I easily swap out the 500GB hard drive for the Crucial 256GB SSD (I'm ordering from elsewhere), and reinstall/recover Windows 7 Pro from recovery discs? I'm assuming that recovery discs are included or can be downloaded. Or, could I restore to the Crucial 256GB SSD from the recovery partition on the 500GB hard drive? How would I do this?

Answer:Order T450s with 500GB hard drive, upgrade to 250GB SSD

Download and install Macrium Reflect.  There's a free version that makes clones.  Clone the factory drive to the SSD, then swap it out.  You don't get recovery disks.   The recovery software, though, has the option of creating a recovery disk set from the recovery partition that is installed on the drive.  So, you could burn the disks and put them away as your recovery solution.  When you clone the factory drive, you have the option of selecting which partions to include on the cloned drive.  If you've burned the disks first, you can simply not select the recovery partition (which is typically lettered "Q") and just clone the system reserved and Windows partitions and save yourself the disk space on the SSD. Once you've got it set up to your satisfaction, and you have the disks, then format the factory drive to use for your other purposes.

alright everyone! let me give the lowdown on the goings on.
Basically, my pc has died on me, but luckily i have a laptop. I cant afford a new pc yet, so i bought a hard drive usb caddy thing. it works a treat with my dvd writer, and with my other hard drive (200 gig Western Digital one, with partitions and windows on the drive), but this seagate one is being a bit more of a pain. the usb drive itself can handle upto 500 gig, and i have a usb 2.0 connection (so theres no compatibilty problems, and it works with the 200fine) also, i tried to put the hard drive in another pc as slave and it found it, but didnt bring it up in windows/my computer. its the same problem on my laptop, my usb caddy finds the drive, and the name, and says its connected, but doesent bring the drive up in any explorer windows etc...
im a bit worried now that the drive might be dead (i have LOADS of data on there that i really need 2 get my mitts on). when i go into hard drive management, the drive is found but has a yellow exclimation point next to it.
i was thinking it might need checkdisc being run on it, but i dont think it will find the drive when windows nexts boots up with it being a usb drive. im thinking of perhaps using knoppix to get into the drive to see if the data is still there etc... (but ive not used knoppix for well over a year and ive pretty much forgotten how to use it lol).
so any help would be greatly appreciated, i know it might be a strange error (or it might be common for all... Read more

Hello, I own a Pavilion 15-n070sw (no longer under warranty) and was wondering about upgrading my hdd drive to ssd. However I noticed some users reporting compatibility problems between this model and ssd drive (+ there is no option to set AHCI mode in BIOS settings..). Since I don't want to invest money in a drive I won't be able to use, I wanted to double check here - will this model support a ssd drive? Many thanks in advance for clearing that up for me! M

Answer:Is it possible to upgrade hard drive in this model?

Yes it absolutely will accept an SSD. There is no need to mess with the BIOS as the only setting for storage controller is ahci. You could not set it to anything else if you wanted to. Windows 7 and higher will simply enable TRIM and NCQ which is what you need for SSD optimization. A lot of tutorials out there come from an earlier era when it was more difficult to get an SSD working. Here is the Service Manual: Manual Pages 63-70 are the "how to" for removing the top cover and replacing the hard drive with a SATA 2.5 inch SSD. I can recommend a Samsung 850 Evo as the best consumer SSD, but many others are good and you can shop for a deal.  The trick to this is planning in advance how you will reinstall Windows clean or clone or install from a Windows system image backup. All are viable options but have their own procedures and pitfalls. We can help with that.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

Answer:I'm trying to upgrade my U330 hard disk to a 500GB 7200 Seagate drive

For U330, you need to loose 3 screws. One screw located at the hard disk panel and two screws located next to the first screw. They are in the same position of the hard disk screw hole. After losen those screws, You can pool the hard disk tray out.

I have a M50 - 8187 Think Centre and I see on the motherboard and in the manual that there is a SATA 1 and a SATA 2 connection. I tried to hook up a SATA 2 hard drive but when I connect everything up using a SATA data cable, there is nothing recognizable in the BIOS. I took a 30 gig IDE hard drive and hooked it up as a slave and the BIOS recognized it right away. My question is, can a SATA hard drive be used on the M50 Think Centre series and if so, what do I have to do to get the SATA 2 controller recognized in the BIOS. I updated the BIOS to the latest version, but this did not help. I see no where in the BIOS to enable SATA. Any help regarding my problem is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!! Ken

You never will have to 'Enable' SATA for it to work, are you sure your plugging in the sata power cable ? The question may also be can your machine handle this drive, not can the machine handle sata. I would reccomend running a bios update, and then trying again.

Hi all,

I am attempting to install Win7 in an Inspiron 1545 with a new SATA hard drive that was purchased. When i insert the drive, I get "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found." I have verified the drive is not showing in the BIOS, I've already attempted to reseat the drive several times. In addition, I've attempted to load the chipset drivers, SATA drivers, etc from Dells website, the drive still does not show in the OS install when booting to DVD or in bios.
I dont believe it to be an issue with the new drive, as I plugged the new drive into another model Dell laptop and it recognizes the drive fine in BIOS, also I can still boot to the previous hard drive in this laptop without issue when i plug it back in.
Is there a specific driver, etc that I need to use for the drive to be recognized or other thoughts people have?

Answer:Inspiron 1545- replacing hard drive, new SATA drive not found "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found

This is strange - either the new hard drive has a rare compatibility issue with your onboard controller (I use a 500Gbyte in my 1545 without probs)) or it is a mechanical problem.I would take a close look at the physical dimensions and compare your original hdd with the new one.Watch the video (even though it's about a 1525 (similar to an 1545) and an SSD hdd) -  go to 2:20

Hi

No the cables are not the same, SATA and IDE are very different.

So ground info is needed though....

What motherboard do you have, make and model?
If you dont know this info then Everest Free will help just tell us what is listed under Computer > Summary > Motherboard

or tell us if this PC is a OEM build as in HP, Sony, Dell etc again model and version number is needed.

These days most or majority of motherboards that employ SATA only have 1 at most IDE connections, so if your using 2 CD/DVD drives the connector capacity will be full.

If you do have a spare IDE connection, then my advice to you is to keep the SATA drive as the primary C: drive ( as they are faster in data transfer than IDE ) and use the ID drive as storage, so once the IDE drive is installed copy all your normal data/music/video/image etx files to the larger drive and just use the SATA for the OS and applications.

Hello, I have a W520 with two 500GB drives in stripped RAID configuration.  One of the two drives has been making a crunching noise, followed by a beep.  I called tech support, and it was not very helpful.  I have the next business day at your door warranty, and they are sending me a new hard drive to install myself, in about 5 business days (not sure how this is, given the warranty I've had, and never used until now...). In any event, my drives are nearly full, and if I'm going to go through the trouble of changing one anyway, I'd rather just replace them both with larger drives. My goal is to have the largest drives possible, and do the upgrade as easily as possible.  I don't really care if RAID is in effect or not, as I don't feel I've noticed any real performence increase anyway. I have in the past upgraded Thinkpad drives to larger drives, but these were in single drive systems.  I'm "handy" with computers, in a do it yourself kind of way, but really just an amateur with this stuff.  I'm concered about the dual drive aspect and the RAID aspect with this one.  The tech support guy said they have no information to share about how to do a drive upgrade, that they just ship the drive (which I'm probably not going to use now anyway). So these are my questions, and thanks to anyone who takes the time to share any advice... 1) What is the best, largest compatible replacement drives to get?  I don't care ... I am using a Gateway E4000, with a WD IDE harddrive partitioned into 2 partitions, OEM XP Pro Sp3, 1.5 gig memory, 2.5 ghz CPU.  I want to put this existing harddrive into a Dell Dimension 8400. It has a SATA Harddrive, OEM (?) XP Media Sp3. 4 gig memory, 3 ghz CPU.  I have no drivers BUT I do have the Dell Bios on a CD.My questions are:1. Since I am moving to the Dell will there still be a BIOS that I can set the IDE drive as the boot drive?  If not how can I use the BIOS that I have on the CD?2. I have no drivers, so will XP boot using generic drivers until I can download from Dell?3. Since my IDE Drive has an OEM version of XP (and a different flavor of XP) will it need to be reactivated, and infact will MS activate XP anymore?4. If MS no longer activates can I download software that will retrieve my old act # and use that?5. What other problems am I looking at and any solutions for those problems?

Answer:How to swap a IDE hard drive from a Gateway to a Dell the has a SATA hard drive

You cannot legally use an OEM installation of Windows on a different machine; the license is tied to the hardware. Also if you take a hard drive with Windows installed on it, out of one PC and put it into another PC, and set it to be the boot drive, it most likely won't work properly. If it works at all. You will need to install a properly licensed version of Windows of your choice on the Dell, if there isn't one already.

Hello,My system before operations:Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 with award BIOS4 x Samsung T166 500GB hard diskWindows XP SP 2I added Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 to the system. BIOS recognized Seagate as a 1500 GB hard drive (if i remember correctly). I Initialized the hard disk in disk management, made one 500 GB partition and other one from the rest of the disk. I moved files from one of the Samsung drive (about 500 GB) to the Seagate?s larger partition. It took a few hours. Seagate?s temperature remained lower than the temperature of the Samsung drives (about 42 C). Everything seemed to work without problems. Then I removed one of the Samsung drives. I had to disconnect them one by one, because I couldn?t know which one was the empty one. After I pinpointed the empty one, I removed it. After that BIOS auto detect says that Seagate is a 500 GB hard disk. Windows sees it as a 500 GB hard disk too, but it doesn?t detect any partitions in it.How can I get my system to recognize Seagate disk properly?

Computer: Dell Dimension 5100. 6 years old.
Current hard drive: SATA 250GB (think it's SATA 1). Dell web site says its ATA-133

Looking to: Replace the hard drive due to faults

Question: Can I fit a SATA 3 hard drive in this computer? Would this just work at SATA 1 speeds because of the old mainboard? Most of the hard drives listed for sale are now SATA 3.

Hi,

I have just upgraded hard drive from an IDE to SATA and cloned the old drive to the new. The system boots OK and I can log in to Windows but I get a message indicating that Windows is not genuine.

I've searched this forum and found a few threads covering this problem but haven't determined the way to resolve this. The threads seem to suggest pasting the output of The Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool to help diagnose the issue so here it is (I removed the Windows Product Key - paranoia!). Doesn't mean much to me so any help appreciated.

Thanks

I have An AMD Duron processor 1.60 GHz with 512MB of RAM. Will I be able to use the PATA/100 Hard Drive? it is 750 GB. I really don't know a lot about installing but am going to try to do this myself. Is there anything you can tell me so that I don't mess this up. I believe my old hard drive, which is a 39 GB is going out. It makes a lot of noise when booting. Also should I make the new HD the master or the slave. I have already bought this drive and realize now that I should have done my homework first so I don't want to take it out of the box until I know I can actually use it. Thanks for any help:confused

Answer:PATA/100 Barracuda 3.5 Internal Hard Drive

If you are installing this as second drive (keeping the old one) then you should set this drive as a slave.
Your OS (XP - Vista etc.) should be on the "master" hard drive.

They should both be on the same IDE controller ribbon.
You should also check your older drive's settings and be sure that it is set to "master". Many times a factory set HDD will be set to "single".

Seagate has issued an official statement today, acknowledging all recent problems with some Barracuda 7200.11 drives. Based on the information posted in the company's forums here, select Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB 3.5-inch hard drives made in Thailand, suffer from a firmware issue that bricks the HDDs after a short period of time. After three to five months of normal operation these defective hard drives will suddenly lock-up as a protective measure and prevent the system from recognizing the drive from then onwards. In most cases the information won't be lost, but the drive will be completely useless, changing the drive's electronics won't help much either. This problem occurs not only to the 1TB Barracuda models, but to Seagate 1.5TB, 640GB, 500GB, 320GB and 160GB Barracuda 7200.11 drives, along with some Maxtor and ES.2 models. That's pretty disturbing, but now Seagate will provide its customers with an updated firmware if their drive is problematic.

Here's the full statement from the company's spokesman Mike Hall:
Seagate has isolated a potential firmware issue in certain products, including some Barracuda 7200.11 hard drives and related drive families based on this product platform, manufactured through December 2008. In some circumstances, the data on the hard drives may become inaccessible to the user when the host system is powered on*.

I dont know what quite happened... For those of you who saw my initial post regarding difficulty getting into the bios, I have deemed that they were separate issues that just so happen to take place at the same time.

The back story is, I was playing a game that I keep on my RAID controlled 2nd hard drive, a Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm. I have had it less than a year and to be quite honest, up until recently, I would swear up and down that it worked better than my primary hard-drive. I was in the middle of the game and the game just shut down. When I went to restart the game, I realized all the partitions from the second hard drive were gone. I went to disk manager, and the disk was missing. I restarted my computer, windows wouldnt load. I fixed the windows issue by re installing windows. (only way to repair bootloader, short of installing ubuntu which would overwrite my files, anyways). Problem is that my new motherboards bios cant even detect the 1tb drive. I go to the ASUS raid wizard in the bios and it tells me that none were detected and I need to plug in a drive. Additionally, when I restart with the 2nd hard drive plugged in, windows, again, won't load. At least it will load this time if I take it out.

-Drive isn't discoverable by windows
-Drive isn't discoverable by ASUS UEFI Bios RAID wizard
-Drive keeps windows from booting
-Drive makes "bbbuuuuuuzzzzzzzz-click-BEEP" sound during ASUS bios boot graphic.

Answer:Help restoring Seagate Barracuda 1TB drive...

"bbbuuuuuuzzzzzzzz-click-BEEP" is not a healthy noise for a drive to make. That and the fact that Windows can't detect it and it won't boot when plugged in suggests that the drive is bad.

You could try the drive in another PC or in a different SATA port and see if you can recover the data, but I wouldn't expect miracles. Unfortunately all drives die eventually.

EDIT: If the data is very important, you could try a data recovery service. They can be expensive, though.

I recently had to reinstall Windows XP and after doing so my Primary Slave Drive which is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 IDE Drive is recognized in the Device Manager, also in Windows Explore but as a Removable Disk Drive and asks for a disk to be inserted and it also shows up in the Windows Disk Manager but has 3 partitions - 1 unallocated - 104.01 GB - 1 Healthy Unknown Partition - 811.57 GB and a second Healthy Unknown Partition - 259.39 GB which is almost 1175 GB of space on a 500 GB drive, doesn't make much sense?  I have un-installed the drive and reinstalled it, also tried to change the IDE configuration, checked the jumper settings and they are OK.  I am at my wits end because I have some valuable information stored on this drive I would and need to access.  Can anyone help me? It is on a computer running XP SP3. Now, it shows up in ?My Computer? but with no statistics and I cannot open it. The drive does not show up in Windows Disk Management. I have gone thru the Seagate website's ?External Drive Trouble Shooter for WinDOWS xp/2000? as well as contacting Seagate Support with no success. I have tried Windows Format, DOS Format, Seatools for Windows, HD LFF Low Level Format, testdisk_win, and Disk Wizard with no success. The drive showed up but they all reported failure in testing and/or accessing the disk. Seatools for DOS sounds like it would do the trick but it didnotrecognizeeitherofmyexternaldrives, theotheroneofwhichisworking. Can anyone recommend a fix? Seems to me that it is a software problem, not a hardware problem, so there should be a software solution. I have very limited funds and can't afford to replace the drive right now. It is used as a backup drive so loss of the data on the drive is not an issue. I'll just run another backup when the drive is restored to health. My boot drive is not backed up on this drive, so that is not a problem.

You could probably disconnect the drive and use it in another external caddy. Before buying another caddy you need to know whether the drive is a SATA or PATA (IDE) probably a SATA if only two years old.

Hello guys.. newbie here.. just want to seek help regarding HARD Drive replacement , for some reason my laptop wont boot upit only does lights (LED) but will not continue to boot or show the logo/ BIOS so we suspected probably HArdisk problem - in that sense we decided just to BUY a new hard drive and replace the existing 160GB with a 250GB.. Now im not sure if this is compatible enough with the MoBO..and the bios..MODEL : LENOVO 3000 G430 just bought it 4months ago here in Hong Kong.. Advice & tips is appreciated. http://www.vatgia.com/pictures_fullsize/tut1254386189.jpg

Answer:is it ok to put a 250GB Hard drive replacement?

You probably can't update the bios in the machine's current condition and if it's only 4 months old that's probaly unwarranted.Check the size to make sure it slot 1, 2 or 3 ( Different thickness) and bring the old HD with you to the store. Also check to see if the HD is IDE, SATA or PATA. It should say on the HD. If not then check out the spec sheets for your machine. Didn't save them? Try doing a search on here. Good luck with that though, I've seen rubber duckies drown with the level of support that Lenovo offers.Ensure that you have the recovery disks or make them any way you can.Good luck to ya bro.

I attempted to add a 250 GB hard drive to my PC, 3.0 Ghz, GA-8S648FX MB with 1 Gig DDR Ram. When I boot my PC and go into the bios, it sees the PC, however when the PC boots it doesn't show it in control panel or in "My Computer". I am running Windows XP Pro 2nd Edition and am frustrated. I have the most current bios for my motherboard and Gigabyte says it should be no problem on their end. So what am I doing wrong? I have tried both setting drives as Cable Select and also Master/Slave. I have tried setting it up with the original Windows XP Pro disk but it only sees 137MB. Any ideas? I got a real good deal so I bought 2 of these 250 GB drives for my PCs, too bad they can't see the. BTW, both PCs are the same motherboard only difference is that one of the PCs is a 2.8 Ghz CPU (INTEL). Thanks

Try going to the drive manufacturers website and download their tools and use this to format. There is an issue with drives above 137mb but I thought this was solved with XP.

Hello, We have a customer who has an R40 that we replaced the drive with at their request for more drive space. The biggest drive we could go with was a 250GB drive. Since we installed the drive, the R40 has found it way back to the shop a couple times for a bad hard drive. We use only NEW drives. The drives have been WD 250 ide notebook drives. The original drive was a 40GB in size. In talking with a colleague form another shop, he suggested that the power supply and battery could play some role in this problem. The laptop battery does not hold a charge. The OS is XP Pro with SP2, the computer does see the entire 250GB when installed, this is seen in My Computer and in the BIOS. Can anyone give a suggestion as to what might be causing the larger drives to not last in the R40. The R40 isa Type 2723-LU2. I would appreciate any advice in troubleshooting this. It could be time for her to move to a new laptop. Thanks, Peter

Answer:R40 on it's third 250GB hard drive in four months

well i don't think the R40 has the shock protection system that came in the later T and R series. This means if the laptop experience constant shocks of some magnitude, this may cause faults to develop in the larger hdd, as the fault tolerance level of these new drives are slightly less than the smaller capacity drives. Usually bad sectors or other mechanical faults may develop, if the the drive head routinely crashes into the platter.

i recently bought an internal seagate 250gb hard drive and when i installed it it is only finding 232gb i was wondering how i can access the other 18gbs if that is possible. i have seen the 137gb barrier but not something like this. all help would be appreciated.

Answer:250gb hard drive not full 250

its the way that windows reports space compared to the hdd manufactures. the hd manufactures report a meg as 1000 KB, while windows reports it as 1024 KB. no over a large amount of storage (say 80gb) the number will shrink, but the space is still there (will be reported as 74.5GB in windows). so what you have is normal.

Hi beautiful people,

Currently im using a 60gb partition for windows 7 32 bits ultimate in a SATA HD (AIHC mode), i've been told in the past that it is not recommended to use the entire HD as one partition cause slows the system (the needle works more), is that still true?

Answer:Windows 7 in a 250GB Hard Drive

To a certain extent yes, It is better to have one partition in the top of your drive to hold your system files (programs, drivers, etc) and another partition to hold your data. This will help your system run faster.

However, you cannot just rely on this alone. You should do regular disk cleanup using a program like CCleaner (don't use the registry cleaner option) and defragment your hard drive regularly as well.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and post that It was working fine without any issues. I have two external drive connected to it.

1. 1 TB Iomega powered drive. - now RAW
2. 2TB seagate external drive.

The 1tb drive suddenly became RAW and I wasn't able to access it. before it happened, I had removed some virus detected in the drive by the AVG antivirus. Post that once or twice it got disconnected and after that the drive became RAW. I understand the file system might have got corrupted since couple of times my system faced powercuts and before I could shut it down the system cut off from electricity as my UPS died on me.

I haven't formatted the disk at all, as I have all my important data in this HD as it was my backup drive for office and personal use.

Disk Management: shows the drive is RAW but a healthy Partition.

I opened the hard drive casing, tried connecting the drive directly to the internal sata cable but the same didn't read even then and still shows as RAW drive. I got a Storite USB to SATA adapter and tried that, the drive is now running fine(as it sounds) with intermittent kind of noise (clicking etc.,) for sometime and then disappears. BUT - my bios doesnt show me such a setting when i go into HD config screen. I know what screen it should be on, but believe me, there is no "large" option for HD access.

Motherboard = MSI MS-6567

Can someone pls help me?? Thanks so much

Dom

Answer:BIOS won't recognise 250gb Hard Drive

Well, error loading OS only shows that it can't load an OS. Do you have an OS on that drive?
At bootup, your BIOS should list the drives it detects. Do you see the Maxtor in the list (next to the optical drive)?

That's a rather old motherboard. It could be that it simply does not support hard drives larger than ~130GB. And I can't see a BIOS update that would fix it either.. You can try updating to the latest BIOS and hope that it fixes the problem of course.

I have recently fitted a Hitachi Deskstar 250gb Hard drive(model:HDS722525VLAT80) to my computer.

After Re-instaling windows (xp) the drive was showing as 125gb.

I have been told this is because windows xp will only support 125gb without service pack 2.

I have now downloaded SP2. but it still shows as 125gb.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this????????????

Answer:250gb Hard drive shows as 125gb

When you partitioned and formatted the drive, it didn't have any service packs, so it limited the format to what you see. If you go into Disk Management, you'll find that you now have about half the drive listed as "Unallocated". You can create a partition on this section and format it, then it will be available for use as a new drive letter.

I think this must be fairly new but I cannot find any info or specification on HP website or with a search on Google. I particularly want to know if its file system is NTFS or FAT32 as my PC is Widows XP with NTFS. Maplin are the only people I have seen who have it on the shelf -not even Amazon have it as they still push the ?previous? 250GB model from HP.

Good Morning:I have Xp on one drive (120Gb) and Vista on another drive (200Gb) although I could move that one to another 120Gb drive.I also have a 250Gb Western Digital USB2 external drive which I would like to partition to make it a back-up for the two operating systems. Can anyone point me to an easy (and cheap) program to do that. And, will it be a problem to copy across since the 200Gb only contains about 110Gb currently? Thanks in advance!

Hi all,

A friend of mine is having problems with a 250GB Seagate Hard drive.

It was bought from a computer shop and they fitted it for him. When he took it home the computer didnít recognise it. It then recognised it as 250gb, but his Windows OS wouldnít work properly (it would some times work and other times wouldnít).

He had the drive refreshed, re-formatted and had the partitions removed and rebuilt. Its then that 130GB disappeared.

Does anyone know what may have caused this (sorry I havenít given much info, but this is all I know) and if so, whether itís fixable. I have suggested that the drive be taken back to the shop that it was bought from, under warranty.

If you need any more info, please ask, and I will try and find out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,
I have been helping neighbour with their Lenovo-b50-80. It originally came with Windows 8.1 and I have upgraded it to Windows 10 and after a few hiccups is working perfectly.
The next stage of upgrading this laptop is to clone the 500GB original drive to a 250GB Samsung SSD using Aomei Backupper Standard 3.2 and Aomei Partition Assistant 6.0

When I go to Disk Management I find that the disk has 6 partitions. Most of which are probably linked to recovering the OS back to Win 8.1
I would like to get rid of all unessential disk space and so I thought I would ask for your suggestions.
At this moment all the files including Windows.old are located on the C: drive.
Many thanks,
s.

So I found https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/documents/ht077144. Towards the end of the page is this image;

Which is 2 partitions short of the Lenovo in #1. The 2 missing 1. Lenovo D: drive NTFS partition and 2. 1000MB partition.
Maybe I should keep them all...

Hello, I've recently done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and one of my harddrives is not showing up correctly. The harddrive itself is my Local Disk D, it hasn't got any system files on it however it is displaying at the wrong size:

The problem lies in the fact that on boot my Computer's BIOS detects the harddrive as a 233GB harddrive. This is not a problem as I understand that the harddrive itself isn't the exact size as what it says on the box, however the Windows 7 installation and Windows itself only detects the harddrive as being 148gb.

What I've Tried Doing:
I've tried different things to resolve this issue. I've looked at the Disk Management, but there are no extra partitions and I've also looked at the harddrive in Partition Manager which again only picked up 149gb and no unallocated space.
I've run a partition recovery tool in Partition Manager which did not detect any lost partitions containing the rest of the harddrive.
My System:

Answer:IDE Maxtor 250gb Hard drive Problem.

Hello samboyd93. Welcome to the forum.

The only thing I can think of is that the drive is set as a SATA2 drive on an older computer that only does SATA1 (please fill in your "My System Specs" to help avoid these kinds of guesses) although I doubt it.

If you look at the back of the HDD there are jumper pins. Setting a jumper sets the SATA speed on most drives. You may need to consult the HDD's documentation to see what the different jumper positions do. Every manufacturer has a different setup.

I would try setting the drive as SATA1 to test. But both drives should be at the same setting. Also try plugging the problem drive into a different port or using a different SATA cable. Can't hurt, might help.

You should also go into your BIOS and check the settings for that drive and compare them to the settings for the other drive. They should be the same.

Hope that helps.

I'm having trouble getting Windows 7 x86 RC Build 7100 to recognize my Seagate 3.5" External Hard Drive 500GB (Model ST305004EXA101-RK). It is connected through a USB 2.0 port on my Asus K8V SE Motherboard - running an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (2.0 GHz) and 1 GB of RAM.

Currently, this hard drive when connected appears in Device and Printers as as "Device" named Desktop. Right Click -> Properties shows that it is a storage device.

Device Manager recognizes it as a Disk Drive and calls it a Seagate Desktop USB Device - no conflicts.

Under Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management the drive appears as Disk 1 - Basic and Online statuses. If I try and assign it a drive letter, I get the following "The operation failed to complete becasue the Disk Managment Console view is out of date. Please refresh the console view..."

Only one conflict exists in Device Manager - I have one Unknown Device under USB Controllers. When viewing that device, it gives me a Code 43 error.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. W/ASUS P7P55D Deluxe board Very stable and non buggy.

Computer was running great with multiple drives. I substituted one of my 1TB drives with a brand new Seagate 3 TB drive. With the new drive hooked up, the computer will not boot and gives a message that there is no hard drive detected, put media in and hit the key. (something to that effect).

If I enter the bios in the condition, it shows all the drives in their correct order and the boot sequence is the first hard drive, CD, etc. It has detected the new drive as drive #3.

But it will not boot.

But, if I disconnect the new drive (power and SATA connector), the compute will boot up fine.

I have checked all the connectors ad they seem fine.

Is there something about the sequence in which the SATA connectors have to be connected?

I am mystified.

Hi,

Sometimes the sequence can be critical. can you check to see that the original HDD is plugged into SATA port 0? If not, try that to see if it works.

You can get a 1TB external hd for $75. Why limit yourself. You can store an image of your hd, as well as back it up. Will the 250GB be ok? Yes. But go ahead and get the larger drive.

Hello all. I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 250gb maxtor hard drive. I have just purchased my second external case off of ebay and it does not work!!

The first one was no name brand, it says "Awesome" on the case and has lights that light up around the case. It said on the web it supports up to 250gb, and on the auction. When I plug it in, it recognizes it and I can view an play files off of it for maybe 5 minutes then it says "USB device not recognized" and gives errors like "this usb device can run faster on USB 2.0" which it is in a 2.0 port. Funny thing is right when I got it, it worked for a few hours, it kept working pretty well at first for maybe a week, then it just stops working after a few minutes.

So I purchased another one on ebay, another non name brand, it said it supports up to 250 gb, and this one it recognizes it for a few seconds and then it is suddently not on my computer at all. I have checked the device manager under both of these items and for drivers, etc. Everything seems to be working fine. I even downloaded a file that helps your computer recognize high disk space, although I was told on XP I don't have to do that. So what do you all think?? Is it just the cheap external case?? I'm trying to upgrade from the 30GB Toshiba harddrive that came with the unit to a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 250GB EIDE drive.
I take the swap the 30GB out for the 250GB put in a bootable version of XP SP3 CD-ROM and nothing - no sign that any power is getting to the drive.
The CDROM tries to write boot files to the hard drive but nothing happens.

Same thing happens when I try to use the 3cd pack from Toshiba or the recovery CD from Norton Ghost.
The computer is not seeing the drive. Put the old 30GB drive in and it boots up right away.

My BIOS settings show it to be set up for EIDE and to boot from the CDROM. What steps am I missing?

Answer:Satellite 2410 wont see new 250GB hard drive

Hi

It looks like the BIOS does not recognize the new HDD? I assume it?s too large?
The Satellite 2410 series is old and I assume it will not support bigger HDD?s than 120GB due to the 28bit LBA

So try with smaller HDD like 80GB or 100GB.

I recently upgrade my PC, and have installed a NEW 250 GB S-ATA Hard drive.
My bios has been upgraded, and when in the BIOS setup it recognizes the drive as what it should be, 250GB, When I was installing XP and creation a partition thru the intall progam it only let me setup a 131GB partition. I set up a 100GB partition and left the rest to play with afterwards. In the Computer management/disk manager in XP I have my 100GB partition and only 30GB of unallocated space to work with.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem?

Shamus

Answer:250GB Hard drive, Windows only allows 131GB partitionable

Since this was a fresh install you need to add SP2. XP came out with a 137G limitation which was addressed with SP1. SP2 has replaced SP1.

If you only want a single 250G partition there are a couple of ways to address it.

1) Install SP2 and then run Partition Magic to resize the primary partition to pick up the extra 150G.

or
2) Slipstream SP2 into your copy of XP and then start over from scratch with a fresh install.

Hi there,

My Sister owns a ASUS laptop running Windows Vista and has a portable hard drive (WD 250GB) which she uses to back up her files and to store her business files and personal files (music, photos, videos etc.) however, i plugged it into my MacBook to transfer files onto it. Now when i try to plug it back into her Asus, it doesn't recognise it and when "Computer" is opened the hard drive is displayed as "Local Disk (G". I am able to double click the text, but a window pops up saying "You need to format the disk in drive G: before you can use it." But i do not want to format the hard drive because the files on it aren't backed up. I've tried plugging it back into my MacBook, but that doesn't recognise it either.

Any help would be fantastic!

Thanks

Answer:WD 250GB Portable Hard Drive requesting format

you may need to rename it as for example in her comp that may have been E drive and in mac F drive so drives have gotten mixed up
try vista disc management if you can see it there change drive letter, or try in safe mode, ie connect drive with comp off then re boot into safe mode

Ive been reading around and noticed that problems like this are fairly common. Im having troubles finding something that applies to me. I have a Dell Dimensin 8100 P4 1.4 GHZ, its sorta old i guess, it was a relatively new P4 computer i think. I just bought a Hitachi GSX 250GB ATA-100 IDE 8MB Buffer hard drive and havent been able to get it to be recognized at more than 127GB. I tried updating my BIOS (went from Revision A02 to AO9) but that didnt make any difference on the drive. DO i have to wipe the drive and start over with the blank drive or what? I also read that XP Home needs SP1 to recognized more than 127GB so i downloaded SP2 and it didnt make a difference. If anyone can clear up why this isnt working thatd be great. Thanks Alot

My machine is equipped with the Seagate Barracuda ST3500413AS 500 GB SATA 6.0 hard drive. It's an excellent drive overall, but somethings a bit strange about how it's been functioning lately. Ever since I needed to remove the SATA power cable during a PSU change, the disk's read/write performance sems odd. so my drive is connected to my HP pavillion dv6133ea laptop through a usb nextar hd dock. it has worked fine for ages but now has started to stop suddenly during access of files on the drive. it's not making any funny noises, spins up fine but after 10 to 20 minutes of use stops working. if I reboot the drive sometimes it says it needs to format disk or if I wait a while it will boot up fine again. tried to diagnose myself and doesn't sound like a crash or notorious firmware problems to me. got it to boot up and tried to run CHKDSK on it. made it about 20 minutes through and suddenly stops. scared to keep trying to diagnose because if it is dying I want to save it's remaining vitality on trying to recover files!

By all means connect a 6GB/s HDD to a 6GB/s header. you won't actually get that speed but will be better than 3GB/s header. At least it should. A 7500 RPM drive would be better in either case.
