new owner of Ideapad 120S

Question: new owner of Ideapad 120S

I am a new owner of a Ideapad 120S purchased yesterday on Black Friday.I have mostly owned Dell laptops previously. I am guessing that when I power the laptop the first thing I need to do is create a backup on a USB flash drive. Any gotchas I should know about?

Preferred Solution: new owner of Ideapad 120S

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: new owner of Ideapad 120S

Yep, backing up is a good practice.

Other than that, you should be good to go. Enjoy your new machine!

Hello, Yesterday i bought Ideapad 120S-14IAP and i have a problem with FN key. It does not work at all.  I installed Windows 10 Pro x64 , after that,  i installed all drivers from lenovo website. Windows is up to date.I tried a usb stick with Ubuntu 16.04  and FN works perfectly.  Seems to be a driver problem.I thought it was a fail driver. I dont know. PS. In BIOS is enabled FN key.

Brand new Ideapad 120S purchased last Friday.Just got around to powering up. Went into Windows 10 to create a recovery drive and get the common non-descript error "A problem ocurred while creating the recover drive". First I used a 16GB PNY in the rightUSB port.Second I tried a 32GB SanDisk in the left USB port. What do I do now? The laptop appears to be working.

I have seen that on older models with emmc drive, there was an available m.2 slot on the motherboard where you could put in an m.2 drive. Can you do that in the ideapad 120s? I have the 11 inch model with emmc drive soldered to the motherboard. Thank you.

Nowhere in the documentation, web site is any info about what kind of controller and hence what size SD cards this model is supporting.Even Lenovo tech support doesn't know that info!I am really hesitant to buy a SDXC card of +32GB only to find out it supports on SDHC cards, thus limited to 32GB... thanks for any useful info, Ralf

Answer:What kind of SD card controller is in a Lenovo IdeaPad 120S-11AIP? SDHC or SDXC compatible?

Hi ITWorxLA,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

As per system overview :
IO port: Memory card slot (SD/SDHC/SDXC/MMC)

Platform specification:
One microSD Card slot, supports up to 2TB

Usually there would be stickers on the box or laptop to indicate the format it also supports.
You can try to find/borrow  a spare 32GB SDXC to test first before purchase.

Hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

I have Lenovo ideapad300 15ibr laptop with Windows 10 64 bit. When on battery in balanced and power saver plans after the screen turns itself off after set time idle but before it goes to sleep there is a beep like when the computer turns on and a sound like a drive spinning up. It then goes quiet and every 20 seconds or so another beep and the drive spins up and then goes quiet again. Strangely this does not happen in High Performance power plan even if all advanced settings are set to the same as either balanced or power saver. It also does not happen when power cord is plugged in. Could any owner of a similar machine advise whether their machine makes a similar noise in these circumstances to reassure me there is nothing wrong with my machine. Thanks

This may be a silly post, but you will find this useful when you want to restore your Ideapad U460 to Factory Default. In IdeaPad U460, the OneKey Rescue/NOVO key (let me call it the 'U' turn key ) is actually a red button which is slightly depressed. Unlike other touch keys, you need a slightly sharper object to press this key (to activate the OneKey Rescue functionality). I was merely touching the key earlier & was wondering why it did not work at all. While I would give an A for Lenovo for making it accident-proof, I would give them a C for not documenting this properly in their manuals.

Answer:IdeaPad U460 - New Owner note: OneKey Rescue/Novo Key

Since your post is about the first and only one I've seen for this laptop I was wondering what your impressions are? no review and, again, no posts to help decide on a purchase. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Hello!
About 6 days ago i bought a new DVD-ROM drive the Pioneer 120S and about 3 days ago i noticed that something isnt right with it. I noticed that when i tried to copy a file of 500MB to my HD, it took 15 minutes according to the dialog box i dont know if that accurate but it took very long for sure.

I did some testing and found out that if i leave the drive unused for a while 10 - 20 minutes and then try to use it it wont spin up!! IT WONT SPIN UP no matter what! even if i try to run nero speed or other benchmarking software. The drive reads the cd or dvd allright but at very low speed say 1x instead of 30x.

Now if I try the same thing soon after inserting a disc the drive performs ok.

I know that there is a silent mode for this drive which i have it disabeled.

The system as a whole is just a few days long and it performs all right.

Thank you

This picture shows how my name has been changed in User Accounts and in regedit, as displayed by running winver, but yet all my files are still found at C:\Users\Owner.
When I go to C:\Users, the Owner folder is locked and cannot be renamed even though my account type is administrator, as seen here.
How do I really change the name from Owner to a name of my choosing?

I purchased my HP from a big computer store with Vista home installed on it. It was an out of the box sale (I thought I could avoid a wait for the comptuer I wanted). The company that sold it to me was listed as the administrator. The old owner took off their password before I took possession of the computer I purchased. I followed instructions on how to put on a password to start the computer. However, there are dozens of fiels named after the previous administrator. I tried to find out how to change the administrator globally to my name. There is still an administrator account name and it appears the previous administrator is still above my permission status - even though i am the computer owner, don't think I am the ultimate administrator yet.

I read that not being able to use screen print was a result of not being the administrator. I can't make the screen print work either.

I assume some members have dealt with these matters before. I would greatly appreciate anyone directing me to some good "how to fix" information.

Thank you

and boy do I miss XP!!!!!!!!

I recently bought an Acer AX3810 with Vista 7 Home Premium 64 bit from the widow of my neighbor. I had transferred all his personal files and copied all the photographs to an external hard drive for her then deleted all the files using "Eraser". I cannot seem to be able to delete the previous owner as administrator. His file has a little padlock symbol on it. I changed his name to mine in the "Manage user accounts" but no matter, it is still "him" that is logged on. I created a new account in my name and then changed the status from standard to administrator but he is still "there". I feel like I am being haunted. Any ideas?

Haha, I don't know what else to call it, but how do you change the owner where it says C:/User/Owner

Thanks

Answer:How do I change the owner in C:/user/owner

Hello Nick, and welcome to Vista Forums.

The only way to change the C:\Users\Owner folder name is to create a new administrator account, then delete the old C:\Users\Owner account from within the new account. Be sure to copy the contents that you want to save from the old accounts user folders into the corresponding new account's user folders to restore them to the new account.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I purchased a new desktop operating on Windows Vista. Now, since I do all my computing from home, I have had little need of my very basic laptop. The laptop is a panasonic toughbook pc that is still operating on windows 98. I purchased it Feb. 2, 2007. I lent it to someone that has been a friend for about 1 and a half years. I lent it to friend because friend stressed the need of a computer NOW but offered to purchase it in increments LATER when financial situations could afford it.

Friend kept contact more frequently than usual to learn all of my laptop's operations. After awhile, friend's (cell phone) number changed and a variety of people are consistently saying that friend is never there at friend's known residence. Finally, some young child at friend's residence (maybe a cousin or nephew) told me that friend has moved. Now, I have no contact with friend. Friend seems to have run off with my laptop for FREE and won't respond to e-mails. I've never had this much trouble contacting friend.

WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IS: Is there any way that I can CHANGE MY ACCESS PASSWORD ON MY LAPTOP FROM MY DESKTOP to better the chances of getting in contact with friend?

I have all the information on the laptop from the company that I purchased it from, can obtain any information that I don't have from the company that has my information on laptop purchase, and I created the original access password myself, so, I know what it is but ... Read more

i am useing windows vista home basics. version 6 service pack 2. when i get an email that opens with notepad the message comes in note pad alright but it is all encripted and unreadable. how can i fix.

Answer:owner

Hi bugs461, and welcome to TSG.

Notepad is not an e-mail program that would normally open an e-mail message. It might be used to open certain types of files that are attached to an e-mail message. Are you trying to open attachments to e-mails? A wrong program association in the the email program may be causing the mail software to use Notepad to open a non-text file.

Good grief:

It's one of those easy "stupid" questions I have. I once saw a Tech Republic letter that gave a simple method of changing the Microsoft IE identification bar. I changed mine to read "Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Geoff Michael Group". I'd like to change it back to the default but didn't write the change down and now can't recall how I made the change.

Thanks for any help someone is able to share.

First, allow me to say I love my Lenovo Products. I started with a G550 Laptop. Good performance and reliable. Still running great. I then bought a H520 Desktop. Worked great until last Saturday. 3 months shy of 4 years. I think the Power Supply has a short. Was using it, then lost power. When I moved it, I pressed the power button and it came alive for a few seconds. My questions are about my new H30-05. Since the DVD Player is vertical, how do I position disc to hold in place?I have an old HP Officejet G85. Sometime I can get Test Print but nothing more. I always get unidentified error. My G85 worked great on H520. I have removed driver many times. Windows 10 no longer detects it. I have to add it manually with no luck. Any sggestions? New laptop - had about a month. When I got the computer I created my user account and named the laptop right after starting up.

I just opened Properties for the C: drive, and in Security ->Permissions for Users ->Advanced, the current owner is listed as TrustedInstaller, not me.

Obviously I can change it to match the username/computer name I created for this system, but.... is this odd?

Hello!  I recently purchased a used Lenovo T51 laptop from the US (I'm in Canada).  The computer came with Win XP Pro installed, allong with a lot of other things, such as NVIDIA drivers and other things. Unfortunately, the computer did not come with installation disks for everything, nor a user's manual. Are these items available from Lenovo for purchase?

Answer:New T61 owner (of a used one)

I bought one new, and you didn't get installation discs then either, they cost extra. The manual I have, but it's nothing useful really, so I wouldn't worry about it, but I could copy it if it helps. The discs you can get from lenovo, or if your original harddrive is intact, you can burn a set from the recovery partition.

I have the bad habit of leaving Pc's on around the house ( I haven't got all the programs sorted out) and i need something that i can click (Or something similar) to shutdown all the Pc's that are on or single, or disply messages.

I just need something that will give me full control of my LAN. It would be incredibly handy if you could find some Freeware software for this, i would preferably not like to use DOS based programs, as i know how to use them but prefer GUI programs.

To reduce the screen brightness permanently, in the battery configuration you can set how much brightness you want it to have (for example 1 brightness when running off the battery, or 5 brightness when running off of the outlet) This is part of the thinkvantage software somewhere, I just double click the battery in the taskbar though.

Sounds like an overheating video card. Make sure that all the computers fans are working.
Check that any cabling is not blocking air flow through the case. Also check that the power supply fan is running.
If the video card does not have fan purchase an add on fan.

Question: Owner

Hi:

I have a wired network of 25 desktop computers and 1 laptop with XP Professional and W2K Professional. A server is utilized but accessible for only 5 of the stations. DSL is the Internet connection.

I would like to set up the laptop with a wireless connection to the network. I have configured a wireless router, Linksys Wireless Access Point Router with 4-port switch (802.11b), to one of the W2K systems. I connected the cat 5 cable to the Linksys and then a cat 5 cable back to the computer. I used the setup wizard to configure the Linksys for the network which uses static IP addresses.

I then connected a Linksys USB wireless adapter to the laptop configuring it to obtain the IP automatically.

I can connect to the Internet just fine but I'm unable to "see" or communicate with the other computers on the network unless I revert back to the network cable.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Geoff

Answer:Owner/Operator

James,

The problem is not with your computer, but with web designers and software.

There is a multitude of options for "ease of use", but as far as captioning existing websites, it is up to the designers. the ADA is highly active in finding solutions to your issue and others. Some options already exist on your computer. They can be found under your start menu/accessories/accessability.

There are programs that will caption existing DVD or Video. Maybe even some other multimedia. I think streaming video is still underdeveloped.

This link is from a company that has developed captioning software.

This link is from a research paper on disabilities vs. ease of use and what is to be done to overcome them.

Good luck with your search. I hope I have helped in some way.

Answer:Pc v owner --PC winning

Hi, you might well be more successful downloading Win 10 iso (make sure you choose the right one) and using that. You then also can use that subsequently if necessary for an in place upgrade repair install (useful!).

You can find appropriate instructions in the Tutorial section (see above).

Make sure you use disk imaging to image your Win 7 so if anything goes wrong (and it did first time for me) you can restore Win 7 from your image backup.

Aomei Backupper or Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage medium for backup + their boot disk (make sure you create it).

Disk image backups are REALLY useful and allow you to restore your system in a defined time and provide a full backup.

Question: New X201 owner.

Hi I recieved my X201 a couple of months ago. Its has the i7 processor, 4gb ddr3 single stick ram,  500 gb seagate momentum 7200.4 hdd,  centrino 6300 wi-fi, webcam, win 7 pro w/xp mode, 9 cell batt. overal i am very happy. i like the batt management sw. I experimented on this feature with sw i generaly use. on max power settings the cpu is declocked to 1.1ghz and i ran the sw i usually use(itunes, eac, ie, etc..) then i used them on max performance which is 2.67 ghz the performance seems very similar. i havent done any benchmark type tests but real life observations. my guess is that my 7200rpm hdd is holding down my i7 cpu. startup and shut down times are about a min or so. i have a number of startup processes along with lenovo stuff. what kind of SSD I should look into? I have ocs vertex and intel x25 in mind. I have right now 410gb available on hdd out of 470ish(500gb) do you think a 120gb hdd sufficient? (i dont store any media, i have them on my nas) i am also going to add another 4gb ddr which probably will not help much.

SSD's do make a difference we have just received about 20 units (not Lenovo units) they are not lighning fast but the difference is significant enough to agree if you have the money its the way to go.I hope you have a 64 bit OS with the extra ram your talking about installing your going to need it....

Question: Owner Feild

Hello,

We have moved our entire company over to vista and we are having some odd issues with the 'owner feild' and author feild.

We have software that scans each computer and looks for the owner info. The problem is all the owner info is now being tagged with "administrators"

We have all domain users OU added to the Administrators group on the local machine. I'm assuming this is where its pulling that info from.

What I'm trying to do is get the owner name to show as the user who is currently logged in from the domain, and not the administrators account.

As well, the 'author' name of the person who works on the file doesn't show up all the time, its very random. Example, we will scan 20 images on a flatbed scanner.. the first image has author info, and the 13th,15th, and 20th image all has the the scanners name (domain user) showing as "author", but the rest of them are blank.

Any suggestions on how to change this or get the author info to show correctly?

Thanks!

I am not a big fan of the online help (ThinkVantage). Is it possible to purchase a real manual? Also how do I stop my computer from locking me out (leaving me at the password prompt) when I step away for a few minutes. It does this on power as well as battery. Thanks, Al

Welcome to the forum!

I doubt that a printed manual is available, but clicking on the Support & Downloads link at the top of any page in this forum will guide you to downloadable documents that you can print out.

To adjust the screensaver time-out, try this:

Right-click on an empty area of your desktop

From the pop-up menu, choose Personalize

Hi everyone. I just wanted to let you guys know how im enjoying this machine. I have a couple questions also but do not worry im searching forums also.  Recently i needed a new laptop for my DJ equipment and programs.. ya you heard me right. So i threw my ps3 bundle with movies and games on craigslist lookin for a trade for a capable laptop.  I recieved lots of offers... mostly amd x2 machines that i did not like. Then out of the blue a guy said he would trade his  barely used w500 for it. He told me he did most his work on his desktop and the laptop had just been sitting there. This was great for me b/c i stated in my add i would love a busniess laptop.  I like the rugged build of it since it travels alot with me. He gave it a clean install of xp and away i went.  Man this thing is a beast, im sure people here use it for autocad or whatnot.. but for my software it handles it with no sweat. Im glad i did not drop the money on a macbook now.  Im running the 2.53 ghz model with 4 gig ram (3 recognized) thats no problem till i upgrade to 64bit  My only questions where when using the dock or the vga out on the side of the machine, i can get desktop extended to my 52 inch samsung lcd.... but when i drag the video player over to it its black. No video, but on the laptop lcd drag it back.. video shows? weird Ive been searching everywhere about what to do. The videos are being played off media player classic from m... Read more

Question: Xp Hp Owner Issue

Yes, embarassingly so, I have issues with changng all of my file path names. When I purchased my computer new the business had already installed the OS, etc. So whenever I save ANY document, the crazy file name includes "HP_Owner" to my dismay. I have already tried to do a regedit, yet file names still have the dreaded HP Owner scar. Here's a lovely example: C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\My Documents\article.rtf. See?! Quite maddening to me. So how would I change that so my name appears as author and document owner?

Answer:Xp Hp Owner Issue

Hiya,

My first thought is that if you right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop, scroll to properties and see who the computer is registered to. Does it by any chance say Registered to HP_Owner ?

Question: New Owner Issues

I recently purchased an older PC from a friend of mine. My problem is that when I try to open winzip files and several other instances, the machine defaults to the previous owner's information and will not install. I have changed the ownership of the PC in the registry, but when I try to delete all references to the previous user's information, I get a message indicating the former owner (Mary Jo Duncan in this case) is a system file and can't be removed. Is there a way to get rid of ALL the previous owner's information, defaults, etc. without doing a clean install? I finally got my desktop the way I want it and would really hate to start from scratch.

Would it screw things up if I changed her name to mine in EVERY location in the registry?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi everyone, so I bought a W520 from an online classified ad site in my area. At the time I was just grateful to be purchasing a i7 with 12 GB of ram for $500. Now I knew of the wrist rest crack, but the other damage (screw wells, and in the battery bay) I didn't see it till I got home then decided to open it up and maybe try to get the keyboard to lay flat. So anyway I was coming from using a little netbook and this is a great rig, but the final blow to it was when my younger brother dropped it from the table top and took out the LCD. Sad thing is, all of this happened within 3 days of bringing it home and getting a fresh install of Windows 7 on it. So I know that this is a company forum and there are more than likely quite a few sad stories floating around, but I could truly use a hand or even advice as to what to do right now. Financially I am sitting at 40% of what I made when employed and the parts for the laptop are going to cost me more than what I payed for the bugger, and with trying to become a student again I might just have to settle with pen and paper. I've attached pictures to the extent of the damage below. Also there is warranty on the laptop till 2014 and I believe that there is also some type of an extended warranty but I don't understand how they work or what they cover exactly. Most of the foot notes refer to American policies and such but I am up in Western Canada. From reading the service manual I have pulled these part numbers:LCD: 04W154... Read more

I often run into " S-1-5-21-3050395830-1169650352-1806787611-1000 " as the owner of many things on my computer when going through files. I am the owner of the computer and currently the only user, but not the owner of some random items. It tends to be difficult to make any changes when this unknown entity is the owner , even popping up with

" Do You Want To Allow The Following Program To Make Changes ... PROGRAM NAME: Permissions Editor For Files And Folders VERIFIED PUBLISHER: Microsoft Windows CLSID: {1F2E5C40-9950-11CE-99D2-00AA006E086C}"

and I'm not very sure how to determine the trustworthiness of this info (or just about anything else, this is my first posted question , starting simple since I'm slightly skeptical for fear my whole computer gets taken over . . please don't be offended by my honestly ignorant stand point, I mean no harm or fowl) to go ahead an accept. I believe I did so once, but that was before I ever had to wipe my PC clean. I've had to do the "press power on button once while holding 0 until it starts to beep" a handful of times, as my roommate had been using it without any protection for months. She no longer is allowed to use any of my computers, nor is she the listed owner of anything on this PC. There are probably so many things wrong with my computer , but if I could find out what this " S-1-5-21-3050395830-1169650352-1806787611-1000 " is, or who it is since it is an owner, where it c... My hard disk recently crashed and I am in the process of installing my apps and restoring my data onto my new hard drive. I have my data on an external Western Digital My Book. The first thing I did after loading Windows XP onto the drive was install Trend Micro on my system. While I was restoring data from the external drive and loading applications, I got a message from Trend regarding owner.exe. I'm not sure how I responded, but I don't think it was not the correct answer! )

I get the following error message when I try to open the external hard drive thru Windows Explorer

Windows cannot find "oWNer.Exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

I've unplugged the drive from the power source and the USB port. The drive is working, but I'm not able to "see" my data.

I did a scan of my C drive and found this worm.

Answer:Who should be owner to different folders in C:\ ?

Have you tried a System Restore to before the time that you changed permissions? I'm not sure that it would work but you have little to lose as you can always change back again.
Personally I think that you should back up all your data and reinstall the OS

"OWNER-PC" is the computer name of what appears to be a wireless PC or device that is currently connected to your network.

The error you got indicates that you do not have a permission to access this PC or device.

Do you have any PCs or devices that has you used that name for?

Question: New Lenovo Owner

Hi,I just bought Thinkpad E440 and I was very eager for this laptop as it combines powerfull components and mobility. I have it for 1 week so far and I am very much dissapointed from this machine. I do not know if other models are made with this low quality. First I have problems with HDMI - The only way to use my external monitor with HDMI is to disable/enable Intel adapter from device manager. I have two car trips with it and it has big scratches on the "rubberized" back of the lid(it stays in laptop bag all the time). I used to have Dell, Asus, Toshiba and my previous one was Acer. Non of those has display issues or deep scratches even for so many years in service! If somebody has any idea how to fix HDMI and scratches please let me know!I can say my next one wont be Lenovo.Asen

Question: New Y710 Owner

Hello, I just bought a Y710.It has been downgraded to XP. Impressions of this computer: Design is nice. Includes many futures lacking in other notebooks. Complaints about this computer:  1. Backlight leakage. Screen is an eye strain compared to Fujitsu.  2. Sound system does not sound good or is it my system: My speakers sound muddy and not powerfull enough. The subwoofer does not seem to be emitting much bass at all and sounds muddy. (My previous notebook had a subwoofer too and it sounded better) Is it my syste? Do any Y510/Y710 owners experience the same. I have installed the XP drivers provided.  3. Touchpad too slow even with speed set at max. My previous 17" Fujitsu notebook had a faster cursor movement. Any fix? Overall, I am a bit disappointed by this system. I know #1 will be hard to fix, but if someone can find solutions to #2 and 3 I would be thrilled.

Answer:New Y710 Owner

Ive been pretty disappointed in my Y710 IDEA Pad. It should be a lot sweeter especially with how much the cpu cost when I bought it.

Need to ask you a question about laptops!
At Sam's Club today and they had a refurbished
HP Pavilion, dv7-3188cl, Intel Core i5-430M processor, 6GB ram and all the other goodies.
I can pay $475.00
out the door and use it for 90 days but the 1st 30 days I have option of buying extended warranty for 2yrs @$30 or 3yrs for $40
Is this a good buy? I am online with it now and so far everything is working ok. Just need someone with more experience with laptops than I am.
Product # wp586ua#aba

Ran sfc /scannow and everything was good.

What other tests can I or should I do to make sure this laptop is worth the money?
Add today at Frey's $699.00 for same model!

ps. I have a desktop that was refurbished from Costco and not a lick of problems for the 3 years I've owned it.

Answer:For Laptop Owner's Only

SFC checked the software
I would check the ram
Download memtest86 and test RAM
www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

After your test the ram, take one good stick and test all the slots. You want to be sure no problems.
Test the hard drive, too
Test Hard Drive www.carrona.org/hddiag.html or this test http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
