Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd Gen (2017) OLED screen flickering on low brightness

Question: Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2nd Gen (2017) OLED screen flickering on low brightness

Hi, I have the following issue since a couple of days (not sure it came with a recent windows/drivers upgrade): When I set the screen brightness to low, or the screen dims itself in a dark environment, it starts to flicker - there are flashes of white/blue as long as the brightness is low. Increasing the brightness gets rid of the problem. I tried disabling the panel self reflesh (PSR) which seemed to help others, but no success there. Anybody got the same issue and a possible solution? My specs: Windows 10 1709, Intel Graphics Drivers Version 21.20.16.4727 Video of the flickering:

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, everyone. I have a Thinkpad X1 yoga with OLED display. I bought it on last November. After having it for half a year, I found a problem about the screen. When I turn down the brightness to below 20 or to the darkest. I can see the screen is flashing. It is very annoying. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Many thanks. Here is a video that helps to understand the issue better.

Got new X1 Yoga 2nd Gen OLED, having problems with the display settings.  The screen colors are incredibly rich and the colors are borderline neon and strain the eyes after more than 15 minutes of use.  I finally found a way to reduce the neon glow by going to the Intel Graphic Settings and adjusting the color gamut option slider from vibrant to one step down toward natural colors.  The problem, is that after a the computer is put to sleep or restarted, it goes back to the neon colors.  Is there a way to get these settings to stay without having to change it every time I open up the computer?  The display is amazing for viewing movies with super vibrant sharp colors, but when it's in vibrant factory settings its very bad.  The colors on webpages and onscreen keep increasing and decreasing in brightness randomly.

I'm trying to work out which X1 Yoga to get. I'm set on the i5 as it's quieter and has longer battery life, with only a minor reduction in performance. notebookcheck.net has a similar battery life for the two WQHD i7 models (IPS/OLED). I was wondering if it's the same deal with the i5 - does anyone have the i5 with OLED? If so, how's battery life?

Loving my Yoga 13 so far have had it since Oct 26th when it was released. Like everyone else I had some issues with partitioning yadda yadda yadda, got that taken care of, but lately I've noticed that my screen brightness seems to flicker, ALL the time, when switching from program to program if the color changes on the screen I notice that the brightness changes as well in noticeable increments. I have the automatic brightness setting set to OFF, so I can't imagine that's the reason.Anyone else having this issue?

Hi, I've had my X1 Yoga for about two months now, running Windows 10 Enterprise Insider Preview 1607 (build 14915.1000).Prior to joining the Windows 10 Insider Preview program (it took about a week for it to update to the insider preview builds from the official builds), I had severe issues with the brightness control of my OLED screen. I could not turn the brightness up to the higher settings (90-100%), because the screen would become entirely black. Also, somewhere in the range of 75%-95% brightness, the screen would be completely blue, as if no other colors were displayed in the OLED panel. This was of course unusable. Coupled with the automatic display brightness adjustments it gave a really crappy experience, as the brightness could suddenly automatically be turned up really high (into the unusable blue-then-black range), unless the display was set to a really low brightness setting. On several occasions I thought the computer had locked up/died on me after disconnecting it from my OneLink+ dock, only to later realize that I could just lower the brightness to force the display back into actually showing something.  Sometime after getting the first Insider Preview builds, which was also accompanied by some Lenovo updates (unfortunately probably masking what is the real cause of this issue), I noticed I couldn't actually change the display brightness at all anymore. It's stuck! This issue persists, and I have been unable to change the disp... Read more

For Windows 10's Power Options, I set "Do nothing" for "When I close the lid". Even though I set the display's brightness to 50% and disable "adaptive display brightness", every time I open the lid, the brightness of the display is max'ed as if it was set to 100%. I have to then adjust the brightness a bit to make it work. I have tried various versions of the graphics card driver (including 21.20.16.4505) as well as re-installing Lenovo Settings Dependency Package but none of these worked.

Until now everything was working perfect. I did a driver update today, which includes the latest display driver, and now I am unable to adjust the brightness. I tried to uninstalled the display and monitor driver but nothing works. Does anyone know how to fix this problem. It looks like it was coming with the latest driver update from today. Thanks in advance

Greetings! I have noticed that a good bit has been written in the forums about the X1 laptops themselves, however, there seems to be no one place/dedicated post on this forum (that I have come across) that lists and rates pen and anti-glare screen accessories for the X1 Yoga 2nd Gen. (2017) or discusses other accesories. Perhaps some helpful current and previous owners of the Lenovo X1 Yoga laptops can provide (if you would be so kind) information, primarily around the areas of useful accessories. The two issues that I would appreciate your help with: 1) Anti-Glare Screens and 2) Active Pen alternatives for the X1 Yoga I am not a fan of glossy screens and the FHD 1080p screen is glossy and reflective. So my question is ? ?do you use/have you tried a display protector that has an anti-glare matte finish? If yes, which one is it and is your viewing and pen using experience enhanced or diminished?? The Lenovo website does not seem to have anti-glare screens for the X1 Y 2017. I have come across a few anti-glare screen protectors on the web, thanks to a post on the X1 Yoga 1st Gen (2016) followed by some additional research. They are listed below: - It3(https://www.amazon.com/Fingerprint-Screen-Protector-Lenovo-ThinkPad/dp/B01C66KA7I/ref=pd_sbs_147_2?_...) - Clearview(https://www.amazon.com/ClearView-Anti-Reflective-Screen-Protecter-ThinkPad/dp/B01KJGNVJG/ref=pd_cp_1...) - Boxwave(https://www.amazon.com/Protector-BoxWave-ClearTouch-Anti-Glare-A... Hello everyone, I got my X1 Yoga 2nd gen a couple weeks ago and noticed some issues with the display: 1, When I scroll up and down in Chrome and OneNote, there is sometimes a line quite noticeable on the screen very similar to what you would see in a screen tear of a video game, except the line isn't straight. The shape is like this: +++++            +              +                 +++++++++++++++++++++++                                                                              +                                                                                 + It doesn't happen all the time. I haven't noticed a pattern, but it's frequent enough to be a bit annoying. Has anyone else had similar issues? Should I contact Lenovo to swap the screen? 2. Answer:Thinkpad yoga 14 Flickering Screen and Active Pen

Hi

I have a TP Yoga 14, it is similar but it is different model (20DM008UUS).

I also have the Intel HD 5500 and NVidia 940M, also on 1920 x 1080 with Windows 10 and I have flickering on the screen.

Do you want to give it a try updating the drivers of the Intel HD 5500 and NVidia 940M?

Maybe you already know that you can download the driver of your model here, but I will like to also share my tips for updating the drivers.

1) Try first Windows Update and update all the drivers and Patches
2) Try Lenovo System Update to get any new/missing drivers.
3) Try to install Lenovo Settings and Lenovo Companion from the Windows App Store, Lenovo Companion also has a "update driver search"
4) Sometimes all that software does not recognize some updated / missing driver. Check Lenovo's Support Site and search for your specific model drivers.

Regards

I have the following issues regarding the OLED brightness When I change the display configuration, e.g. attach the yoga to a 2nd monitor via Dock, flip the notebook into tablet mode, change screen orientation, wake up from standby.... In half of all cases, the brightness is reset: It shows like 50% brightness, but the screen is turned up to 100% and I have to manually re-adjust brightness. Very annoying!OLED "power saving modes" (e.g. reducing brightness of the taskbar) aren't persistent: If I restart the device, If I change the display configuration (see above for examples) - the OLED power saving settings seem to get lost and I have to restart Lenovo Settings in order to make them work again. Very annoying as well!Using Windows 10 with most recent drivers supplied by lenovo companion. Happy to provide additional details.

Answer:X1 Yoga 2nd gen OLED power saving / brightness is reset (Lenovo Settings)

Same exact thing here.  You seem to have all the same quirks my X1 Yoga 2nd Gen has so it's probably a widespread problem.

Have been having problems with the display since purchasing. All videos look terrible with any dark areas looking black and pixelated, even with the Lenovo OLED settings (when they worked) which are frustrating because the OLED looks gorgeous everywhere else. Also since updating the OLED display settings stopped working. Is there anyway to fix these issues because the main reason I got this laptop was for the screen

Hello friends, I am in the process of using the lenovo sales site to configure a new Thinkpad X1 Yoga to purchase. There is one thing that concerns me. When I go to select the OLED display option, the following warning shows: 14.0 WQHD (2560 x 1440) OLED TouchWWAN is not available with 14.0 WQHD (2560 x 1440) OLED Touch display. I tried to do some research on this, but I need some confirmation from people who have experience with this. It is my understanding that this 2 in 1 can actually use a sim chip and connect directly to 4G LTE networks. Is this correct? That is truly a great feature. However, can someone confirm that I lose this feature if I purchase an OLED display with this order? I am thinking this might get lost because of the warning "WWAN is not available with 14.0 WQHD (2560 x 1440) OLED Touch display." Can anyone confirm or clarify all of this? I would love to get an OLED display. However i know I will lose some battery life. I think that could be an acceptable tradeoff. However, if I also have to lose 4G LTE connectivity with the OLED that might push me over to an IPS display. Thanks everyone!

Answer:Question on Gen 2 Thinkpad X1 Yoga and OLED option

You need the WWAN card and the antennas to get 4G LTE connectivity.  My X1 Yoga does not have the OLED display and I have no access to engineering info, but my guess is that something related to the OLED display caused interference that affected FCC certification, or that something related to the OLED panel got in the way of the WWAN antenna wires inside the lid.  I really like my IPS display, but I primarily use it indoors.  For outdoor use, I think I would find that there was too much glare.

Does anyone have a 1st gen X1 Yoga that is cellular ready? Mine has been nothing but trouble.  Bought laptop at Microsoft Store in Stanford Shopping Center with my son on 1/7/17. I was told by sales person that the ThinkPad was cellular ready. Well, after spending two days on the phone with customer service at Microsoft, Lenovo, and Verizon I have learned that Microsoft's sales person lied to me about the X1 being cellular ready, Microsoft's extended warranty is worthless, Lenovo tech support and Verizon tech support know nothing about this machine or how it works. I spent 3 hours Monday and 5 hours Tuesday with tech support from each and no one has resolved my problem. After reading a few posts, I discovered that lenovo sells these with sim slots even though they are not cellular ready. What is the purpose of having a sim slot then? This is fraudulent. I'm returning the computer at Microsoft Store.

Answer:Thinkpad X1 Yoga (1st Gen, Oled) WWAN lie by Microsoft and Lenovo.

Good day and welcome to the community.
Sorry you're having difficulty.

In my personal experience, a ThinkPad that is described as cellular/broadband-ready has meant that it had a SIM card slot and that it had the appropriate broadband antennae installed, but did not have a WWAN card installed. That is left to the purchaser to do. One exception (there may be others) to that would be when a purchaser configures a ThinkPad on the Lenovo sales site, and selects the optional WWAN card. That machine would come as cellular/broadband-equipped, requiring only the customer's SIM card.

Again, this is my personal experience.

Regards.

I got my X1 yoga with OLED almost one month ago. Under Lenovo Built-in App, Lenovo settings, there is a color settings to adjust for viewing needs and eyesight protection. I like the option of Blue Light Cut for Office, which adjusts the blue light output. However, from just now the color settings didn't work anymore. Whatever option I chose, the screen color keeps the same. I called Lenovo tech support, and they escalated me from basic support to premium support. Then they surprised me by stating that I need to pay $199 for this one-time service. I argued that 1) I am under warranty coverage and 2) Lenovo settings are one of Lenovo products, not a third party software. I am not asking a software from other companies. But they still insisted that warranty only covers hardware issues.  Alright, this is Lenovo, which claims to provide high-quality service to their clients. Now I have to fix the problem myself. I created another Windows user, but no luck with the color settings. Does anyone have idea how to fix the issue? Many thanks.

Hi Guys, Looking to consolidate the list of issues I have with my TP since updating to Win10 Fall Creators Update (1709) update. And I am looking for help in resolving the outstanding issues. I have gone through the common resolution methods on this official Lenovo site as well as from this collection of tips. Outstanding issues below. 1. Keyboard AUTO backlight setting is not working, light doesn't come on when its dark on its own.2. Auto screen brightness control is not working3. Screen rotation button is still greyed out in the sidebar as well as settings4. OLED colour profile settings had stopped working and disappeared. (But this fix worked)5. Intel SGX drivers were busted (finally updated on their own via Win10) Now for 1, 2 and 3, I think this is an integrated sensors issue and I have tried uninstalling the Intel Sensor Solution device drivers from Device Manager and then updated the drives through Lenovo Companion. Nothing changed.Windows Update later also installed an update called Intel Integrated Sensor Solution but these issues have not gone away. On a positive note, this Win10 update and the related updates to Synaptics touchpad drivers resolved the issue of the cooling fan being constantly being on (this forum attributed the issue to bad synaptics drivers). Anyone else facing the same issue related to sensors on this machine? As of 5 minutes ago, there were no new updates on LenovoCompanion or on Win10. Thanks

Hi all, About 1 month ago I dropped my X1 Yoga on the ground and the screen cracked. I don't have the warranty on this laptop. This is an OLED model and I spent some time finding a proper screen replacement. Now I just received the new unit and very carefully put it in, connected the 2 wires, and tried to turn it on. The laptop boots up with a black screen, keyboard is working, and I can enter Windows and hear the notice voices. But the screen is not turned on, no backlight, no image, although it looks identical to the original screen and is connected in the exact same way.  Any suggestions? P/N is 01AW977.

Answer:X1 Yoga OLED - replaced screen unit not working

My guess is that you blew the backlight fuse (on the motherboard) when the screen broke.  Most shops don't do that sort of repair.  I will need a new vocabulary.  OLED screens don't have normal backlights.  I will have to call it the illumination fuse.

My X1 Yoga 2nd Gen OLED has a great feature wherein, outside of normal Windows screen dimming, within the Lenovo Settings app, user can set a "Task Bar Dimmer" timeout and a "Background Dimmer" timeout. This is described as a power-saving feature, but in reality its a great way to ensure that the OLED screen doesn't experience burn-in over time when on-screen items are displayed for prolonged periods. However, when I connect to an external monitor (which is almost always), the Task Bar Dimmer and Background Dimmer ONLY affect the external monitor and no longer affect the OLED display, where (IMO) this is far more important. Am I missing something, or is this a bug? Dimming the taskbar on the OLED is far more critical than on my monitor.

Hello everybody! The Thinkpad X1 Yoga (2nd Gen) laptop is offered with 3 types of displays, as described by Lenovo:- 14" WQHD (2560 x 1440) OLED Touch- 14" WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS 10-point Multi-Touch- 14" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS 10-point Multi-TouchSince the OLED version is not labelled as "10-point Multi-Touch", does this mean it only support "1-point" touch? (Or any number less than 10).Also, does the OLED display support Stylus pens? Thank you in advance!

My screen brightness using FN+F11/F12 and also in the advanced power settings slider won't adjust the screen to anything other than brightness and minimum or brightness to 100% when I move the slider.  It shows the percentage moving up and down, but the screen stays 100% until I'm on the lowest setting,  then it goes right to minimum.  I received a bunch of Lenovo updates on the first Wednesday of this month and I've had several issues since then, I tried reverting back to previous drivers, but it made no difference, so I'm back on the latest drivers.

Hello,  I recently acquired this laptop and I've not even had it for a week. One of the first things I noticed was that the backlight likes to flicker from time to time. I've been googling for solutions, I've looked in the Intel options and I don't have any power settings in regards to auto adjust, though I have looked through and found some auto adjust brightness that I've switched off. That's when I came across the Lenovo Energy Management. I noticed that during my searches there's supposed to be an option for disabling the intelligent power saver or something like that. I couldn't find any setting of the sort and my power saver looks very different to most. I'll post a screenshot to show you what I mean. If I can't find a solution soon, I'll have to return this one to the shop. http://i57.tinypic.com/25qc9hs.png  Many thanks

I have bought the Yoga Pro 2 a week ago and noticed this screen flickering especially on low brightness settings. I have read around these forums and found the solution to disable Intel's power option and windows power setting, but that did not solve it. Still flickers when set to low brightness and it is very frustrating on this new laptop when working in dark conditions. What shall I do?

Hello.
I have a strange problem: my screen is flickering/flashing really bad. However, this disappears when I put brightness level in 100%.
I've always used brightness levels between 40 and 50%. Today, when I turned my PC on, the screen was flashing really bad. I tried a lot of things, and noticed, by accident, that the flickering stops when I adjust brightness to 100%. Unfortunately, I can't use it for a long time in 100%, because it hurt my eyes.
I just want to know: how can I fix it, to be able to use it again in 40-50% brightness, without this annoying and eye-hurting flickering effect?
I attached a video showing the situation. Although the cell camera may distort something, when it films a screen, it is possible to notice that the screen flicks really bad, and it just stops when I adjust brightness to 100%.
As this video has 2,91Mb and Dell just accepts files with maximum 1Mb, I uploaded it in Dropbox, and I am sharing its link. I hope this works: www.dropbox.com/.../Dell
Please, help!!!

When plugged into the adapter my Levovo Z570 screen flickers between bright and dark when on certain webpages or doing certain tasks. I have changed the battery and this makes no difference. This doesnt happen when on battery power. Note that the brightness is flicking between the battery brightness setting and plugged in brightness setting. So if there is a large difference between the two the flickering is very noticable and distracting. If I make the battery brightness the same as the plugged in brightness the flickering doesnt happen. Any ideas or solutions?

If you don't know, type msinfo32 into the search box, you'll see exact Dell model number and version of windows. In the meantime, run the diagnostic tool to check hardware on system:
1. Power off system.
2. Power off system, quickly start tapping the F12 key continuously. In the boot menu, stroll down to diagnostic and then click on it. Report back any error code

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/hk/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-... offers the "ThinkPad Monitor File for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad" the driver in version "6.3.0.0, 2017/04/03". When you actually install this driver, you see that it's actually dated (issued) 2016-08-19 . When you ask Windows Update to scan online for updates, it gets version 6.6.0.0 issued 2017-11-09, by Lenovo. Lenovo can you please ensure that your drivers are kept up to date, or is Microsoft distributing an incorrect version?

I have an "issue" with my Yoga.It used to be that when I turned down brightness completely the screen would go black because there was no more backlight at all. However it now seems that even completely turned down there is still some backlight left meaning i can't turn off the screen completely. I really like being able to turn off the screen quickly, for example to save battery when rendering or when I leave the laptop unatended and don't want people to see what im working on. Is there any way to get the old behaviour back? Not quite sure what caused the change in but im guessing some kind of driver update... Running Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga Brightness turn off backlight

Usually Intel graphics drivers don't have "backlight off" as the lowest setting, so in principle, this was a 'bug' that was 'fixed'.You could roll back your graphics driver and see if it brings back this functionality. I'd just pin something like LCDoff to the taskbar though.

If you lower the brightness to the recommended default battery setting of 4 out of 16 the screen flickers. The brighter you put the display at, the less noticeable it is.  At 2 which would be useable if needed the flickering is really bad.  Plugged in at 14 brightness setting you can't see any flickering.  But the lower you get the more noticeable it is. I had it at 7 which seemed alright but is really draining the battery, then I used it in the afternoon sunlight and I notice the flickering again unless I really turn up the brightness. It isn't a screen cheapness issue.  I have a lenovo ideapad s10-1 atom here that I bought for $199 and the screen is really nice.  I was really looking forward to getting a better version of that screen.  I have a HP tx2500 tablet and the screen is really dark/washed out but no flickering at the lowest levels.  I usually go for cheap bottom of the line laptops and have never seen something like this at the lower brightness levels. There is a "x120 flickering" thread.  But it really deals with glitches / bands going across the screen and the bios update 1.11 fixed that.  I read all the reply?s and they don't help.  The varibright is off.  The refresh is at 60hz.  The bios has been updated to 1.12.  The video driver is the latest talked about in the flickering thread. My issue almost like it is an Inverter board issue, like the screen might not last that long. ... Answer:x120e Low Brightness causes major screen flickering

Another forum member had the same problem: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x120e-backlight-flicker/td-p/394641 He/she never posted a solution, but I assume it's as you think, a hardware issue. My x120e doesn't do it, but my Macbook does -- it's done it for the past 4 years I've owned it. It's fairly obvious when you take a video of the screen, but I don't really notice it in real life... I suppose it's like how some people don't notice 60 hz CRT flicker (which I notice, but I'm fine above 72 Hz).

I originally meant to discuss this weird issue of the screen of my Lumia 1520 flickering when it is set to absolute low brightness. I.e. In the "Display" settings, when you slide the "Low" bar to minimum. The screen visibly flickers. However, this doesn't appear to be a hardware issue at all, because upon reading the forums, almost every Lumia I think has this problem. Even a guy with a surface had it. So it can't be a general or device specific defect. It could be:
A. A software issue, in the brightness settings. Or a buggy driver.
B. A characteristic defect of LCDs. Cuz I dont think it happens in LED displays. If this is the case, I presume its the backlight, rather than the pixels, which are the problem.
What do you guys think?

What do you guys think? The flickering is the mechanism employed to regulate the brightness of the screen. This can also be observed in high-power CREE LED flashlights, where the brightness of the flashlight is regulated by making the diode flicker at varying rates - where the shorter the "on time" and the wider the gap ("off time") between "on times", the dimmer the light will become. While the L1520 has an LCD screen, the same mechanism may have been employed and is, as such, not really an issue. It's just that at dimmer settings the interval between "off times" become long while the duration of the "on time" of the screen become shorter, making the flicker noticeable.

Hi there,
I bought the new Studio laptop DS1537K20C75RM a few days ago. Everithing seemed to be fine untill 3 days ago when I was working in the evening.

The screen is really bright! So I tryed to set the brightness to the lowes level. Suddenly I found that it flickers realy hard and it is easy to nitice!
It seems like the LED is flickering on a low brightness level. I was thinking that it shouldn't!

It is really hard to work in evening in such conditions!

Setting the brightness level to the maximum removes the flickering. I was trying to set the brightness down by the video card properties. It helps but in some reason these brightness settings do not affect the cursor! It just shines anyway! It seems like a workaround but I still hope to find a normal and official solution.

I really think that such a flickering affects my eyes. It is ugly!

Is it a general problem of all LED panels? Why does nobody say about that? I heard only the "great" and "exelent" words about LEDs and thats why I actually bought this model..

I'm open to hear your thoghts! And I hope to engage the technical guys here to explain what's going on with my laptop!

Cheers!

Answer:Studio 1537 LED screen flickering with low brightness level

Hello.I have the problem, but not only on lowest but on Low Bright LevelS at all.
Studio 1737
It is really not good, and It cause eye strain.
I think It is faulty LCD display, because I have another Studio. The difference is clear like day and night.
I put both Studio's side by side and I compare them, and It is really huge difference not only in flicking, but in the colours too.
Till colours is not problem or not warranty problem, this easy noticable flicking must be covered under warranty.

I received my XPS 15 recently and have noticed that the display flickers slightly when set to 0% brightness. No flicker is visible at higher brightness values or while gaming (unless my eyes are deceiving me).
I am wondering if I have a defective unit or if this is just a driver/settings issue.
Anyone else experiencing this issue? or have a solution?

Answer:Dell XPS 15 (9550) subtle screen flickering at 0% brightness

Yup. Same issue here with my 9550. No solution yet.

I have a Tecra 8200 running Windows 2000 Pro. The problem is with screen brightness flickering intermittently, every few minutes when on battery power. The Toshiba power saver utility seems to work OK; its response seems to depend on battery life remaining, ie below 50% there is no difference between "normal" and "long life" with respect to screen brightness.
Above 50% there is no difference between "normal" and "high power". There are no problems at all when running on AC power.

I recently changed the battery; the original was a PA3062U-1BAR, but the new one is a PA3062U-1BAT. Could that be causing problems?

Answer:Tecra 8200: flickering screen brightness on battery usage

Hi

I'm pretty sure the battery replacement is not the cause of the flickering. If the battery would be bad or not compatible (it IS compatible, I know!) you would experience more problems like not able to fit it properly, not charging, giving way to short run times...

I think the flickering comes from problems with either the FL-Inverter or maybe the FL-tube.
The unit you have is not so new anymore and the tubes wear out eventually. It might not mean that the tube is about to go out completely, but it could mean just that it is not as bright as it was when new, and the lower light modes are harder to sustain in an even way.

What you could do is to make sure that you do not have a connection problem that might interfere.
Remove the mask in front of the screen and locate the FL-inverter board. It is a single PCB and should be just below the TFT.
Disconnect and reconnect the incomoing and outgoing connectors a few times. But please please please be very careful not to damage the cables or connectors.

Try to use the low light again and see if it still is flickering. If so, you might just either turn up the brightness another level (means shorten the battery runtime) or consider turning the unit in for repair.

Good luck

Tom

Hello forum! I bought Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon X1 2017 (black) laptop with the FHD screen a few months ago and now I want to upgrade to the WQHD screen. Is this still possible? How much would it cost to change the screen on my laptop? For more information, I live in New York City, New York and I am willing to visit a certified Lenovo outlet in the city to make this happen. Please let me know who to contact / which number to call. I'm very happy with the machine but I do wish that the screen had a higher resolution.  Thank you for your help! Wishing you a pleasant day ahead.

Hey guys The screen of my Yoga 900 Screen has started to flicker, when I push the screen backwards. The screen turns black and there is a line on the screen for a slit second. It doesn't happen alsways and it's not always in the same position of the screen. Sometimes the screen turns back on as soon as I move the screen, sometimes it needs some more moving. I've conntected the laptop with an extended display, and it seems that only the screen of the laptop has this problem (no flickering on the second screen). Is there anything I can do or is it a warranty case? (It's a new laptop, I've bought it in December) Thanks for your help!

The screen on my brand new Yoga 3 Pro (Windows 10) will suddenly start flickering and the keys don't respond for about 10 seconds, and then stop. It has happened when running on battery and on AC power and is extremely annoying when I'm typing in Word (2016), less so when I'm on the Internet. I use the machine mostly for text processing and web browsing, not really for gaming or watching movies, so it's not like I'm using that much processing power. Has this happened to anyone else?

Hello everyone,Recently, I got a Lenovo yoga 14(with Nvidia Geforce 940m and intel(R) HD Graphics 5500) on windows 10. I have one problem with it which is the screen flickers on and off if I have software such as store, bing news, google chrome and microsoft word open on maximised screen. I've tried turning down the resolution, turning of panel self-refresh and updating the video drivers, but it didn't work. Also I've noticed that when the screen is flickering the mouse moves back to the centre of the screen. Instead of pushing the maximised button, if I drag the borders of the software window and make it full screen, it doesn't flicker at all. Some advice would be much appreaciated, Roger

For some reason my screen on my laptop spontaneously flickers and basically looks like it's having a seizure. I've tried updating the display driver and updating the system and neither worked. I've also tried the solution that requires you to go to safe mode to disable "Windows error reporting" and "Problems Report and Solutions" and it still hasn't stopped flickering. I bought the laptop about a month ago and the flickering started about a week/week and a half ago. I'd strongly prefer to fix it at home and I really don't want to have to return it to Best Buy to buy a different laptop. Any suggestions/solutions?

For the past 3 months, i've been suffering with my screen flickering on the yoga 2 pro. I've installed and updated all drivers, especially the BIOS. However, nothing has worked for me. It started after previewing WINDOWS 10 as a tester and worsened after the public release - it used to work as champ on WINDOWS 8.1. The laptop is great, the only issue is the screen flickering. Although a lot of people have been complaining about this curse, Lenovo has ignored the problem.

The laptop has been running well for many months. While using it today just looking at e-mail, the screen developed a very high frequency flicker. Restarting has no effect and the flickering is present during the Lenovo startup screen, so this is not a driver issue. Everything is up to date and I haven't installed any software or drivers for about a month. Definitely seems like a hardware issue. What do I do now?

My screen looks normal during boot-up.  A few minutes/seconds after boot-up, the screen color turns a yellowish or pinkish hew.  Then the screen turns very dark.  I can see the outline of the icons on my desktop, but it's so dark, I cannot see the cursor.I connected an external monitor which displays a normal screen image.  After putting my PC in dual mode for the external monitor, the screen on my PC gets back to the point where it has the pinkish/yellowish hew.  Also the screen on the PC flickers. I'd appreicate any help you can offer to resolve my screen issue. Thanks!

Just today in a Yoga 2 Pro tips discussion I read that the solution may be to disable Panel Self-Refresh in the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel (Power -> On Battery). Too soon for me to tell if it works but I have my fingers crossed.

I've found some similar issues but not quite the same. I think I've solved this but want to hear from anyone who's had similar issues in case I should get it replaced. The screen did a bunch of flickering the very first time it was switched on - a bit like you see sometimes when you update video drivers on a Windows PC. I put it down to the initial setup that it was probably doing however my son tells me that it's flickered a few times in the last week. Today though, the screen turned off completely even though we could hear the video he was watching so the unit itself is still working. At this stage I went through a bunch of diagnostic steps (albeit with zero experience of Chromebooks). I couldn't seem to hard reset it with combinations of refresh/esc/power etc. Plugging into AC did nothing. Plugging it into a TV with HDMI showed a Chrome-like blue background but no cursor or controls. All the while, still just the black main screen. A gentle shake or two did nothing so it doesn't seem like a loose connector/physical thing. My solution - I created a recovery USB key and the instant I plugged that it, the screen came on with the recovery process. I completed that and it seems fine, for now at least. This suggests to me there's a software issue - somehow it got itself into a state where the screen was turned off. Anyone else had similar? Does it sound like I should get the unit replaced or is this a software glitch only?

Hello everyone, I bought a Lenovo YOGA 500 15 15ISK  only a few days ago and today I had finally the time to unbox it and turn it on.I have to say I was quite impressed with the design and how light the laptop is. However, my good impressions pretty much stopped there. Upon loging in windows (laptop comes with Windows 10 preinstalled) I came across a painful screen flickering and a problematic mouse pointer movement (both with the mouse and touchpad). When I carried out an initial google search I was shocked with the number of people that had similar problems to mine, literally thousands!I have a good day trying to sort out the screen flickering (I have fixed the mouse pointer movement) and eventhough I found a couple of suggestions and solutions that initially worked, the problem returned after a few minutes. Furthermore, when I was browsing a webpage and then moved on to a new one I could see an imprint of the previous page, as if the previous letters were imprinted on the monitor. I have also experienced 4 times in about 6 hours a lovely black screen (dark grey actually) where the only option was to switch the power off after a few minutes in order to manage to get the screen to work again. My first comment is that I find it discraceful that a company sells a product in such state, especially since the problem is well documented by thousands of user. As far as I am concerned, and the law dictates, a new product has to be in full working order and work to... Read more

How did you fix the mouse problem!? I bought the same computer and had these same problems.  I found the display driver issue online (screen flickering, seems to be be avoided if using Chrome instead of Edge or Firefox).  That was annoying but the biggest problem was the mouse.  With the trackpad or an external mouse (with updated drivers or rolling back) the issue persisted.  The problem can be described as the mouse not moving in a fluid motion, constantly getting stuck for just a small period, appearing jumpy or sticky.  It was incredibly frustrating.  I returned the laptop assuming it was defective, however the replacement unit had the same problem.  The problem only started after the computer performed its first Windows Update.  So I removed the security update (Windows wouldn't let me remove all the other updates), and the problem vanished.  However, a day later it did more updates and the problem was back.  Since I couldn't find documentation online, I wasn't aware if a fix was even being planned.  For a brand new laptop, it was pretty appaling.  It's a shame, because I like my old Lenovo laptop. On a side note - there are related problems with the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book, so it might just be an Intel Graphics HD 520 / i5-6200U problem.  But at this point, I don't want a Lenovo OR any other laptop with that processor...

I have a Yoga 2 Pro and ever since updating to Windows 10, I have had the occassional flickering screen issue (and so have many others, I presume). Is there any way to fix this, preferably without touching the BIOS? Also, I just realized that my right speaker is not working. Has anyone had the same issue/know of any fixes? Any help would be truly appreciated.

Answer:Yoga 2 Pro Flickering Screen and Speaker Issue

Try reinstallinng this:   https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/wwe3038e.exe for your flickering problem. This is Lenovo Energy Management driver. As farr as your speaker is concerned, try reinstalling this: https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/13ka01af.exe . This is the audio driver. If the speaker still doesnt give sound from both sides, then one side might have been damaged.

I have a really annoying phenomena - my screen is constantly (every 10 seconds) shrinking to the bottom and right (approx 10% of size) and then resize to normal size. I am working with a connected monitor (extended output) but this occurs on both my yoga screen and the monitor simultanously. I am on a yoga3 pro with windows 10 . Anyone had something simmilar?

My Lenovo 910 is crashing about once daily.  Typically, this occurs when I am using an Office 316 app.  The entire screen will start wildly flickering.  Nothing on the screen is legible after it starts.  No keyboard or mouse responses stop the flickering, including Ctrl Alt Del.  Shutting the lid in the hopes of entering sleep mode doesn't work either.  The flickering is completely unchanged in spite of the lid being shut.  The only solution is a hardware restart.

Hi, I've recently bought a Lenovo Yoga 3-1170 (80J8), and all worked well till I decided to have dual boot Windows/Linux. Linux works great. I installed a clean copy of Windows 10 in Legacy mode. It worked well untill the HD5300 graphics card driver was installed when the screen started flickering. I've been trying like mad  all possible drivers, screen brightness and power-saver configurations but nothing worked. Then I realized it could be the UEFI, so I installed a clean copy of Windows 10 on UEFI mode and worked fine. If I then change to Legacy support with UEFI as first option, the screen flickers again although Windows is in the UEFI. So it's clearly a problem of the BIOS. Any idea how to solve the problem? Lenovo guys, are you gonna provide a BIOS update? Thanks a lot

Hello, Since two weeks my Lenovo Thinkpad screen flickers on the right side and on boot up or recover from stand by. This becomes pretty annoying and I have updated all the drivers and also upgrading to Windows 10 didn't work neither. The warranty was due June this year, so I don't know that if I have to repair it that it will cost money. But I think it's strange for a screen to be broken in one year and 3 months. If you perhaps know a solution for this or know how it will be handled by Lenovo if I send it away for repairs please tell me. Yours faithfully, Joost Kolkhuis Tanke

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

Hi, I love the Yoga 2 Pro. But i have fews issues with it. Especially when used on battery. My screen flicker from time to time. The onyl fix i found was to close the lid to put the laptop to sleep and the reopen it. Not very convinient. An other issue I encounter is the screen blanking after a while when the computer is not in use. It's like the computer blank the screen to save battery power, but when you want to reuse it again, it won't start again. THe only fix is to hard reset the computer (eg : press 10s the power button) I am running a fresh clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro with all the Lenovo Drivers up to date (exept the BIOS one) If you could help me fix my issues. I think it's software related.Do you think i should put the BIOS update ? Does anybody ever try with a clean windows 8.1 install ? Thanks a lot,Romain
