Laptop won't turn on but the power light stays on for a few seconds

Question: Laptop won't turn on but the power light stays on for a few seconds

Hey guys, I really need some help here! My laptop is not turning on. The power light turns on for a few seconds but then it turns off again. The fan doesn't turn on either. I know it's not the battery because I switched the battery out with my brother;s and it's still not working. I also tried to just put it on the charger and it doesn't work then either! Of course my laptop is no longer in warranty so please help me out!!

Preferred Solution: Laptop won't turn on but the power light stays on for a few seconds

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Laptop won't turn on but the power light stays on for a few seconds

Hi E. Trader,
Welcome to the Community.
Remove any peripheral devices that are connected to the computer.
Please unplug the battery and the adaptor, press and hold power button for 10 seconds and then plugin the adaptor and turn on the computer. If you get light on the power button, we would be able to run a test on the computer to isolate the issue. Instructions on how to run the test are mentioned on the link below:
http://dell.to/i5zbDR
During the test you would get a screen with solid colors and that time please press “Y”. The test result should be an error code or beeps (if nothings come up on the screen).
If there is no light on the laptop, system board needs replacement.

Im having some problem with my Packard Bell EasyNote TJ61 - I powered it on and the fans whirred like normal and the lights on the keyboard came on like normal - the button lit up. But the screen stayed black. Then the fans went silent after 5 seconds and it sounded like it was switched off but all the lights were still on - the power, hard drive and keyboard ones. I noticed if I run my finger over the touch pad buttons for volume etc they light up so im not sure whats wrong.
I replaced the screen on the laptop the other day and it was working fine until last night and this has happened. Any suggestions?
I've tried replacing ram / replacing hard drive / pulling the cmos for 30mins / unplugging and trying the 30 seconds power button trick but nothing.
Any suggestions?

If you have a PC monitor connect it to the laptop and see if you get a display on it.

Also check the laptop screen for a dim image, shining a light onto it may make it more visible.

What was wrong that made you replace the screen ?

I have HP Pavilion 15 n003tx notebook. After I shutdown my laptop the power LED still stays on, It does not blink it just stays on. I have tried turning Fast Startup off as well, problem still persists. Kindly assist.

Answer:Power LED light stays on even after shutdown

Hi, Try installing the latest IMEI driver directly from Intel as follows. Open Settings and select System.  Select Power and sleep, then click on Additional power settings - in the following window, click on 'Choose what the power button does' in the left hand pane. In the subsequent window, first click on 'Change settings that are currently unavailable' ( near the top of the Window ) and then remove the checkmark from the box against 'Turn on fast start-up (recommended)'.  Click the Save Settings button, then close any open windows and restart the notebook. When windows has reloaded, download the IMEI driver directly from Intel on the following link, unzip the package and run the installer. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26127/Intel-Management-Engine-Consumer-Driver-for-Intel-NU... When the installation has completed, restart the notebook. When the machine has reloaded, re-enable Fast Start-up and reboot the notebook once again - let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

Not sure if this is where I should put this or not, but I have a problem.

When I shut down the computer, the fan stays running and the light on
the power button remains lit with a yellow/amber color. What could be
causing this?

It just started happening yesterday. The only way to get the computer
back up is to unplug it and plug it back in. Pushing the power button
when it is like that does not work.

It is an e-machine, 2.7 GHz Intel Celeron, 80 GB with 1G Ram and I have
Windows XP

Answer:Power button light stays on??

How are you shutting down? Just hitting the button? Has the machine been configured to go into standby when that happens, instead of powering off? Does it work when you click Start --> Shut Down, and select Shutdown?

Here's how to check:

1. Right-click on the desktop
2. Select 'Properties'
3. On the 'Display Properties' dialog, select the 'Screen Saver' tab
4. Under 'Monitor Power' press the 'Power' button
5. On the 'Power Options Properties' dialog, select the 'Advanced' tab

The setting we are looking for is listed here under 'Power Buttons'. If this is set to standby, it will generate the symptoms you are experiencing.

Hi Everyone. I have an Edge 14, about 18 months old. While web serfing yesterday, the screen suddenly went full black. The red power light stayed on, but the laptop was completely unresponsive to ANY key that I tried. Tried to play a DVD-still no display and it did not sound like the DVD was spinning at all. Tried plugging into my TV with the HDMI output-no display on computer or TV. I was able to turn it off with the power button and found that the display would come on if I kept the laptop off for a while, but after a few minutes, the same thing would happen. The longer I keep the laptop off, the longer it will stay on before going black, but never more than 5 minutes or so. Taking some on-ling advice, I tried holding down the function button for 10 seconds and toggling F-7 on and off-neither worked at all. HELP!

Hello all, I have an HP ProBook 6565b that will not power on at all; no screen activity, no booting to BIOS, no fans starting, no HDD's spinning... nothing. The symptoms that I'm seeing are as follows: - No lights come on at all when on battery power. - On AC power, the only keyboard area lights that appear is the power button stays steadily on (no blinking, just stays on).  - On AC power, the only 'front' lights that appear is the Power LED (stays steady on) and the 'lightning' LED (stays steady on, but blinks 1x-2x a second; I'm assuming a 2nd LED or higher brightness blinking).I have a feeling this is a hardware power issue, but I'm not sure how to troubleshoot it very far. I've tried the following:Removed the battery and powered it up =no start/no lights (see above)Connected it to AC power and powered it up =no start/no lights (see above)Removed the battery, pressed and held the power button for 30 seconds, re-inserted the battery, and tried powering on (with AC, same lights as above; with battery = no start/no lights)Any advice? Thoughts? The laptop is out of warranty, so that's unfortunately not an option.

The IdeaYesterday I came up with the bright idea of painting the palmrest of my laptop.  It was beginning to look rather ugly from heavy usage and my mouse burning the plastic. Please note, this laptop worked fine before I took it apart. The Disassembly/ReassemblyI started to disassemble the machine piece by piece using some very nice directions I found online: Link - http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/ToshibaM45/Satellite_M45_disassembly_1.htm. My goal was to get this one piece of plastic separate from everything else so I could just spray paint it, so I removed the keyboard, removed the LCD, removed just about everything except for the motherboard (I skipped the part where it said to remove the heat sync because I didn't feel like redoing the thermal compound) until I just said "forget this" and decided to put it all back together. After reassembly I plugged the laptop back in and pressed the power button. The button light came on, the fan spun, the HD spun, everything seemed fine for about 2 seconds: Then it shut down. Now, this is where I have been for the past 24 hours. (note: The LCD gives no sign that it has powered up) In this time I have tried narrowing down what could possibly be the problem here. So far I have done the following things...- removed the HD and tried to power on, same results. - removed both memory cards, swapped their positions, tried one at a time, all with the same results. - reseated every connection that I removed during my... Answer:LAPTOP: stays powered on for only 3 seconds.

I'm sure this is going to sound obvious, but I would triple check and make sure you have everything reconnected correctly.  I would go though the guild again making sure everything that got disconnected got reconnected.  I would also check for any forms of damage.  Check for any loose screws or anything else that might be shorting something out.  Also make sure its plugged into the power.  My laptop will only power on for a second or two if the battery is dead.Like I said, I'm sure you've checked this, but another look never hurts.

I was on my computer one morning and we happened to have a power flash, quickly on and off. Afterwards i turn on my computer, everything comes normally, gives me the safe boot option, i start up windows 7 log in and it freezes, on a side note that is very unusal. I've had my setup for a month now and not 1 freeze. Afterwards anytime i attempt to turn on my computer the monitor stays amber and nothing shows, no bios nothing. I've tried tried multiple things such as replacing the power supply, running bare minimum (1 stick of ram, cpu, cpu fan and power supply without graphics card installed), Ironically im in a nerdrage rush to get it fixed by 11p.m. central time tonight, a new game i've been preparing for with new comp upgrades and such for months comes out on midnight and i very much so intend to be there for it.

my computer specs:
890GPA-UD3H Motherboard
3.3 dual core am3 socket processor
9800gt xlr8 nvidia graphics card
2 sticks of 2 gig 1333mhz ddr3 ram
600w Power supply
500 gig sata harddrive

im running windows 7 professional 64x

i was running a 480w power supply when the power flashed, i bought a 600w today.

Inspiron one 2205 wont power up.....screen. stays black and. blankIt sounds like it's coming on,, however, cannot see anything...Looks. Like. Blank screen Power light is orangemessage edited by shoskins79yahoo.com

Answer:dell inspiron one 2205 power light stays orange

Check out the reset given in the second link at #2, then the screen as per #3. If it is still the same then responses #1 and #2 (first link) suggest possible items that might need replacing. However, without examining the Inspiron it is difficult to be absolutely certain so it could be expensive just buying things in order to find out. This would need to be weighed against invoking the professional who can look at the unit and should be able to give more concrete guidance. Most things can be repaired but it all boils down to cost. I have an X31.  My laptop is behaving as though it is running on AC power when it is not (ie. Charge light is on, power management settings in windows recognizes it as running on AC power).  Battery will not recharge, though windows power management says it is recharging -- it does this regardless of whether the battery is in or not.  Eventually, the battery died completely and computer could no operate without AC (date an time settings would even reset when unplugged). On the advice of a computer repair store and forums with people of similar problems, I purchased a new battery.  This did not fix the problem.  The new battery is able to operate on what little power it holds from factory, but computer is still behaving as though it is plugged in when it is not.   If the battery is not the problem, what else could it be?  Worried about motherboard. Please advise. Kolyn

Answer:Battery/power issue (orange light stays on while not plugged in)

Welcome to the forum! The charging circuit on your machine's planar has been damaged. If you're handy enough, you can open up the machine and start looking for a blown fuse... As for date and time resetting, you need a new BIOS/CMOS battery, they're under $10 on eBay. If that fails to resolve the issue, you have another motherboard-related problem. Good luck.

I have a Actiontec gt701-wg from Qwest. Just recently, whenever I reconnect my modem, the power light would stay orange and nothing else would light up. It can take anywhere between 5-15 minutes of plugging and unplugging the power cord for the other lights to light up.

I had called Qwest Technical support and the tech told me it's a modem problem. He told me to leave my modem upside down for 30 minutes to see if the problem is fixed. He said if that does not work then I should get a new modem. I tried that method and it does not work.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have just install a new asrock K7V88 motherboard. All is working well accept that when I turn off the computer using the power switch at front the usb hub stays alight. The only way to turn of power to the usb hub is to turn of the switch at the back of the power supply. Has anyone got any suggestions as to what may be making this happen.

Answer:Power stays to usb when system is turn off

Your motherboard has 3 pins labelled (PS2-USB-PWR1).The jumper needs to be across pins 1&2.If it is across pins 2&3 it allows for USB or PS2 wake up events. This could be causing your problem.

Answer:ethernet lan light stays on orange when laptop is off

It's a notebook/laptop - does it do as you describe when the powered via the mains adapter (i.e. that is "carrying volts"); or does it do it when on battery power only?Incidentally is this a new effect you are noticing; or has it "always" done this? And do you actually turn of/power down the laptop, or simply put it into standby or sleep mode?

Just got the notebook for my daughter for Christmas and this just happened:  I was trying to run the recommended HP updates and it said "installing" for a long time.  Meanwhile, I opened up Chrome and it locked up saying "not responding".  So I stopped the install action to see if it would help but to no avail.  Then I tried Ctrl-Alt-Del to get to the task manager but nothing.  Tried that several times.  I was finally able to get task manager open by right-clicking the task bar below.  Once in task manager I couldn't end task on Chrome.  Then I couldn't shut it down by holding the power button.  I was finally able to shut it down from the start menu.  Now the power light is on but notebook won't turn on.  I tried everthing I could find online so far with no luck.  The HP Support link was a dead link.  The only thing I am doing at the moment is trying to wear down the battery.  I've got a USB light plugged in and it is on.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Any solutions??  Thanks!

I had it for nearly 2 years,Lenovo Y50-70 Touch -2 days ago while playing games on it, I smell a chemical smell coming from it so I immediately shut it down just in case. The next time I turn it on, it was fine the backlit keyboard glow red as usual but no display, and now it shut down after 4 seconds (with the fan running) whenever I turn it on except, sometimes It stay on (but still no display and no fan running).I got no experience into opening pc and such, I I tried opening it up and remove the dust that built us by quite a bit and tried to locate where the chemical smell was from, I though it was probably from the Fan or Coolers as it seems more strong there but not sure. After trying to turn the laptop on a few time the strong smell kind of dissipate a lot, and smell weaker.I been having a hard time trying to pinpoint just which part of the laptop is needed to replace. So if anyone could help me in the right direction it would be great. I just hope it wont have to buy a whole new motherboard x.xAlso idk if thats helpful information, but the first year playing games was fine, but the 2nd year and the laptop kind of overheated so I tried to cut down a bit and the fans were making more noises than ever. My laptop was working fine yesterday, charging and powering on an off normally. It updated without my telling it to. When it was complete (since it said don't turn computer off until finished) I either just shut the lid or I shut it down when it was done. This morning when I wake up and try to turn it on it won't power up. Then I noticed that the power button was blinking, like it is in sleep mode, tried pressing 10 times then holding down power button for 30-60 seconds and still nothing. Next I saw that although the power is plugged in the battery light won't come on. I don't know if it is charging (it could be dead). I tried a bunch of different outlets and that isn't the issue. I also listened to the computer and there is a very soft high pichted noise that dissapears if you unplug it, and that when you hit the power button and it starts blinking, the sounds changes fom high to lower pitch and back again over and over. But no other sounds or fans kicking on or drive spinning. I am pretty sure it isn't the power cord but have no way of checking. And I can't remove the battery without voiding the warrenty. Anyone have any advice, besides calling to have Lenovo send me a box to send it back to Lenovo since it is only 4 months old and still under warrenty?

Answer:Lenovo Edge 15 laptop 80K9 battery light won't come on, power light blinks

Suggest you eliminate problem 1. Do you have spare power supply unit? Worth trying that first. Your battery may be in sleep mode and won't wake up as battery is drained and hence needs charging. 2. You can go to local retailer and suspect a good one (John Lewis) will let you charge it for 30 mins. Ideally go back to person you bought it from. 3. Once you are in use restore to go back to last working point. I have to telll you the support from Lenovo and Microsoft was very very very disappointing. I tried to even return the PC and swop for HP as mine is only 2 months old. However, the answer was send back to Lenovo. Hope you find a way to get it charged

Hi. Tonight I had a problem with my laptop. It was in sleeping mode, and when I open the lid there were no mouse function and no touch screen function. So the only thing I could do was to press the power button for 3 seconds to turn it off, but it didn't completely, because the screen turn off, but the power button light is blinking just like when it is on sleep mode, and I'm not sure if the hard drive light was on, off or blinking before this, but now is blinking. I press the power button and nothing happen, I press it for 3 seconds and nothing happen. I even did the HDMI connection to another monitor, but both monitors don't show anything, not even recognize that something is connected to the HDMI port in the new monitor. There is no sound, nothing, just the 2 blinking lights. What should I do? Thanks PS: I'm not sure if it's Windows 10 32-bit or 64-bit. It was upgraded from Windows 8

PC has been working fine for years but suddenly last night it froze, I was just using Photoshop and when I reset the monitor would stay at standby and the HDD light would stay on.
I cleared out a little bit of dust on the motherboard, took the mobo battery out and put it back in, made sure everything was plugged in and everything seemed normal but the problem remains.
I'm guessing the motherboard has kicked the bucket but not sure.
Thanks in advance to anyone able to offer advice.

Answer:HDD Light stays on and PC monitor stays on standby

well, the symptoms imply that the computer isn't passing POST. so that makes the most likely culprits the memory, cpu and motherboard. check that the memory is seated properly, the cpu heatsink is mounted properly and the fan is connected and then you can start thinking about blaming the board. if you have spare memory and/or a spare cpu they might come in handy to rule things out.

edit: it could also be the graphics card but it's less likely. if you don't have access to another computer/graphics card, try taking the current one out and seeing if the HDD light still stays on while trying to boot without it. now i'm presuming you have a basic knowledge of ESD and handling computer parts.

Have you attempted to connect an external display to see if you can get some sort of display? That will help make the determination if it is the motherboard itself or if it is the screen or a cable that could be having an issue.

I first logged out of my computer and came back and I noticed an orange light on the power button. I shut it of and turn it back on about two times with the same results of an orange light. I then shut of the the extension that houses 10 plugs. When I turned on the extension I turned on the computer the power button didn't give off a blue light or orange light. The VGA cable, mouse, keyboard, Ethernet cable are all plugged in. I later removed all the connects to the computer gave it a minute and plugged it all back in. There is a solid green light on the back under the power cable. The fans turn on there is noise coming from inside the computer a soft humming and light fan from the back of the computer. But the power button will not turn on. The monitor light is orange and says "No Input signal Input 2,Go to Power Save." When I switch to input 1 it reads "Cable Disconnected Go to Power Save." What internal issue could this be?

Possibly overheating because fan on CPU has failed. You will need to open the back of laptop and see if fan is spinning.

Hello.  Apologies, I'm a beginner to the hardware aspect, and really need help before I spend any money if I can.I have a HP Pavilion a250y (D7219V) CTO Desktop PC, I think it was 1-2 gigs of ram, and I know neither the video nor sound card were standard, though I forget what they are (was bought this way, with upgraded cards).  It had windows XP home with I think sp2.  That's all the specs I can remember off the top of my head.Yesterday due to the risk of water damage, I had to quickly move the computer out of my room.  (The computer did not get wet.)  I had shut it down before I started taking out the cables, leaving the power cord for last.  Since it was out I also decided to blow the dust out of it before putting it back.  I took it back in once things were safe and connected everything, and saw the power supply light come on, but when I press the power button, nothing happened.  I had no problems before this, so I can only guess either I had started taking the cables off too soon, or I did something wrong when I used the compressed air.Fortunately my files are on an external hard drive, but if I could still get it back running, I'd be very glad.Thank you for reading.  All help and time is greatly appreciated.

Answer:PC won't turn on, power light is okay

Hi,You may have accidentally disconnected one or both of the wires that go from your power switch on the front of your case to the motherboard while dusting. If you look carefully inside your case, you should be able to tell if this is the problem by following the two wires from the power switch to the board. If they aren't connected, or only one is connected then this is the problem. Let me know if this is the problem, and if it is I will tell you how to reconnect them.

Hello, the other day I started a game on my notebook and it turned off. When trying to start it up again the screen turned black with purple code across it and couldn't fully boot up. After leaving it alone for a day I went to turn it back on and it worked fine. A couple days later I went to turn it on and it started to boot up but the screen stayed black. I have tried the bios power reset, and the cap lock blinks white 5 times, two fast then a break, twice fast then a break then once more. It has been a few days and this problem is persisting. I have tried hooking it up to an external monitor and it tries to connect then days signal can't be found. Any help would be appreciated!!

A few months ago I bought an Alienware X51 R3 from Dell. It worked fine, but occasionally had weird issues, despite being a new powerful gaming desktop.
But starting yesterday, I came back to find it seemingly shut down. The power light was on, but the screen was black and the system seemed to be sleeping. I touch the power button, and nothing happens. Clearly it was already shut down, but I never told it to do that, and only left it for a few minutes.
I tried to turn it back on, but now the system does not boot, or even try to. The fans don't power up, the lights don't even turn on. The only thing that comes on is the power light, but it's dim. I have never seen that behavior in a computer before.
So, I made sure to disconnect the power supply and hold the button for 20 seconds, to make sure the charge was drained. Still the system won't power on. I turned on the monitor, but it works fine. The system isn't even trying to power on.
After doing my own research into the growing list of problems with the X51 desktops, there's a particular issue with the graphics card that comes with certain versions.
The GeForce GTX 970 card in this desktop seems to be prone to stop working, at least that's what I've seen in the problems reported by other costumers that ran into the same set of problems. I don't know for sure if that's the problem here, but the brick for the power coord still shows its own light when plugged in. It seems to be working... Read more

I'm trying to help a friend with an HP PC that is fairly new - runs Win XP but don't know any other spec details.

The power supply's green light is on - but pressing the ON button does nothing... no noise, no fan no nothing. Is it that the power supply has gone out - even though the green light is on? Or is it the motherboard?

I could put in a new power supply for her but I hate to buy one then find out it's the motherboard.

All help is appreciated.

Thanks!

i have tried to turn on my laptop and there is an amber light where the green power light should be and it wont even power up what could this be

Answer:Satellite does not turn on - power light blinks

Hi

What notebook do you use?!!!

Seems the notebook provides a blinking code. This means that a hardware error was detected.
Usually the short blinking means 0 and long means 1.
The authorised service technician should be able to read such code and to locate the hardware malfunction.

Mostly it?s something wrong on the motherboard!
So I don?t think that you will be able to fix it. That?s not possible if you have no experience and the right tools and parts.

So in my opinion you should contact the ASP in your country for an help!

Good luck

The other day I decided to turn my envy off for the first time in roughly a week. I usually just leave it on, plugged into the charger, putting it into sleep mode when im not using it. For some reason, ever since then I have not been able to turn it back on. Whenever I press the power button, The power light blinks. The pattern is a single short blink every 3-5 seconds. This continues until I take the battery out. Sometimes, if I leave it be for a day or so, I am able to get the computer to turn on, but It will not boot. I can hear the fan going, see the lights turn on as they are supposed to, however the screen remains black. I am under the impression that this either a hardware issue, or the CPU is just toast. either of which would suck. Normally I would take to a computer shop and have them look at it, but right now I'm serving in Iraq, so im SOL. And yes, I have tried everything under the sun to get it running. I have taken the battery out and left it out for an extended period, tried turning it on with and without the ac adapter plugged in, tried to perform a hard reset, and a combination of all of them.

I have what I presume is a power supply problem:

When I turn my PC on at the plug, the green power light on the front of my case flashes at me, and I can't turn my PC on until it's stopped. The light on the back of the PSU also flashes. Now if it only flashed for thirty seconds, I wouldn't care. What difference does an extra thirty seconds? It's not as if the intarweb is going to die in the space of time it takes for me to turn the PC on at the plug, and then actually turn it on. The fact is, it flashes for a full thirty minutes, which leaves me sat in my chair, twiddling my thumbs. I don't get much time after work between coming home and going to bed, and in those thirty minutes I can get a lot done, which is why its' really starting to annoy me. It started about a month ago, with thirty seconds of flashing, and has slowly built up to thirty minutes.

Now if it's something I can fix with the right-sized hammer, then fine, I'll do it over the weekend, but if it's a case of getting a new PSU, well, I'm building a new computer in four or five weeks, and really don't want to be spending money on a new power supply - I'm going to have to borrow money from my parents as it is.

I've tried plugging the power cable directly into the plug socket, rather than into a surge protector - no difference.

I've tried unplugging the PSU from the motherboard and everything connected to it, then reconnecting it all - no diff... Read more

I have a HP Pavilion dv6 dv6-3122sa
Windows 7 home premium (64 bit)

I've had it for about 8 months, and then today all of a sunden whilst ~I was browsing the web, it started to freeze and was taking ages to load/ respond to clicks. [I did not install anything today, did not download anything, was not opening an email] I was literally just browsing the web like I always do, and out of no where it started playing up.

Then out of no where, I got a blue screen saying there was an error- if this is the first time I've have received this error just let it restart. And it was the first time, so I did let it restart.

But now it keeps going to a blank screen, it as a blue background picture with white rays and I can move the cursor but nothing happens. In other words The screen background just stays blue with white rays, but I can move the cursor.

Just as soon as it loads up to the screen background that just stays blue with white rays, there is a loading bar on the cursor, followed by a transparent grey pop up box that appears for about a second before vanishing.. then nothing happens. I can move the cursor that is all.

I've tried restarting/ taking the battery out etc no joy..
So I went to start up repair (normaly I would get a wizard that gives me the chance to do a system restore)
Anyway it does the same thing, it takes me to the blue screen, shows a grey transparent popup box for a second before disapearing.

I have a Compaq Presario, Windows Vista Basic, around 3 gigs of RAM.

I recently rearranged my room, and when I went to go plug everything back in for my computer, the power supply light started to flicker when it was fine the day before.
I don't remember this ever happening before; it's still green, it just flickers rapidly and I can hear it.
I thought it was a temporary thing, but my power button is completely unresponsive and it will not turn on.

I have had my power supply replaced twice prior, and I fear I may have accidentally surged my power supply when I plugged it back in.
I would like to know if this is the only cause, I have tried different outlets, and even checked to make sure that I didn't mix up my power supply cable with my monitor or printer, but the results are the same.
Even when I unplug any power source, the light flickers and gradually dies, as compared to going out immediately.

The last time I replaced my power supply was around October of 2009, due a faulty fan.
The time before, was October 2007, when the power supply just shorted out.

This time I am completely confused since it was working the day prior, and wonder if my moving it would have caused something. It seems so unlikely, but due to my bad history with power supplies, I am prone to assume it is the same problem.
But if anyone has any other suggestions, please help.

Thank you for your time.

Answer:Solved: Power Supply light flickering, computer won't turn on

Since you moved the computer I would open the case and make sure all the powersupply connections to the mobo and peripherals are tight.

Answer:turn on the computer and power light goes on but screen remains black

If this is a notebook PC, try connecting an external monitor to the VGA port. If the display comes up on the external monitor, it points to an issue with the screen.

If there is no display on an external monitor connected to a notebook PC, it points to an issue with the motherboard and will require a professional diagnosis.

Hope this helps.

I don't know much about this pc other than it's a tower and about 3 or so years old. I figured it was probably the PSU (power supply) but wanted to verify as many things as possible. Basically, there is a green light on the back of the pc (on the PSU) that will flashes on and off when you try to turn on the computer. The PSU fan doesn't spin and nothing else makes any attempt to turn...just dead.

I pulled all the power connectors and jumpered the power switch pins (15-16), this gave me a solid green light on the PSU and the fan spun normally. I tested with a voltmeter and got the proper voltage on all the pins. I am thinking that this probably rules out the PSU but not 100% as something could be 'pulling it down'???

Any ideas on what else to look at? I hate to buy a PSU when it appears this one is ok. That pretty much leaves the MoBo and/or CPU. I've pulled all the cards and memory trying to get it to do anything and nothing affects it. I suspect there is something wrong with the MoBo but don't know how to verify that.

Any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:eMachine power supply (PSU) green light flashing, won't turn on

What you need is a PSU Tester which you can get on eBay that will tell you if the power supply is bad.

Hello
Bit of a long 1 this.A while ago I had a problem with the power connector on my laptop. When I opened it up I could see the little jack had come away from the mother board,so a bit of soldering was in order,it did the trick and it worked fine. Then the same problem again so out with the solder. Now when I plug in the power adaptor the green indicator light comes on but when I press the power button it wont turn on,the harddrive doesnt spin the fan doesnt kick in NOTHING.If I remove the battery and just try to power the laptop with the adaptor the power light doesnt even come on,its the same if I just try to power it with the battery.I have replaced the CMOS battery but its the same deal.I have been reading up on this and it seems it could be any number of things. The laptop is the I series 1200 type 1161.There isnt any additional memory sticks installed so I dont think it could be that.I would really apreciate any help on this as it really is doing my head in.Cheers

Answer:Thinkpad I series 1200 power light on but wont turn on

It sounds like you went a little too solder-happy and over-soldered something causing a short or something like that. Not sure but I'd suggest you go back and check for that possibility....on the other hand a hw component might be in need of replacing?

Good Luck.

Hello all. First timer here.  I've had my HP Envy for only a year and it won't turn on.  Nothing out of the ordinary happened to it, but when I plugged in the power source and push the power button, the light next to the power input hole flashes 3 times.  I tried letting it sit overnight to see if it was just drained, but still no change.  I took battery out, plugged power cord into laptop and still nothing.  We use wifi as our internet connection and didn't receive and error messages or warnings before this happened. I'm not sure if it's just the power cord itself or something with the laptop. Thanks for any and all help!!! Joe

HP 6910p has power (even the fan comes on) but does not boot. When one or both ram chips are in, the power button lights up before promptly powering off. This repeats with no end. Whenever I take the 2 ram chips out, the power button lights up and stays on but the screen stays black.

The only other symbol that lights up and stays on with the black screen is the mute sound symbol. The cd drive starts up but eventually goes out. The lightning bolt symbol shines orange for a second then goes out. WiFi symbol doesn't glow at all.

Important notes: the laptop makes two short beeps at the beginning of both scenarios. It has no battery and runs via plug. It came on the other day after removing all power, taking one of the rams out for a minute and putting it back in. I was able to log in and even use the internet. However it shut off by itself after about 30 minutes and this trick hasn't ever worked since.

Answer:Laptop has power but stays black or restarts.

We got a Compaq Presario S6500NX from a friend who had upgraded to another computer and we can't get it to work. It ran fine before he brought it to us, however, once we got it here and tried to power it up it wouldn't start at all.

On the power supply in the back the green light blinks and clicks rapidly when the cord is plugged in, and pressing the power button does nothing at all.

Interestingly, a few minutes ago I took it out of storage, (we got the computer months ago and gave up when we couldn't get it running) plugged it in by itself and it powered up just fine, the fan turned on and everything! So I opened it up and cleaned out some of the dust (I didn't have it plugged into a monitor or anything, I just wanted to see if it was still doing the same thing it had months ago) and, lo and behold, when I tried to turn it on again with everything plugged in, I got the blinking/clicking green light and no power up.

What could be the problem here? I know the whole thing isn't totally shot because it DID power up just fine a few minutes ago. But now we're back to the blinking clicking light (instead of the steady green glow that usually happens when the power supply cord is plugged in). It leads me to believe that something's loose, but I don't dare mess with the power supply box unless I know what I'm doing...

Another question is, if the power supply isn't fixable, would it be possible to replace it with the power supply ... Read more

I am having a boot issue with my Dell i7559 laptop. I was using it normally this morning and suddenly get an IRQL type error. The computer resets itself and is doing some kind of diagnostic test and it freezes in the middle of that. So I reboot the computer and it won't boot up after that.
The current situation is that I can power it on. The power light will turn on, and the keyboard lights will turn on, but nothing else happens. I don't hear the fan at all (usually it turns on when I boot up the computer) and the screen is completely blank. The screen is working though because when I hit D+power on, I get the flashing lights. When I plug the computer into an external monitor, there is no response. But other than the power light and keyboard light being on, there is no response whatsoever from the computer. I think this is considered a No-post error but I couldn't find any more info to diagnose the issue (there is a tech support page on dell.com that lets you diagnose no-post errors via the LCD lights on the laptop but i7559 isn't listed on that page).
This is similar to an issue I had a few months ago. I was getting lots of weird blue screen of death errors, and the computer wouldn't boot past the bios and eventually got bricked. That time the solution was that I opened it up, cleaned out the dust, swapped the RAM into the other slot, and then when I rebooted it, it worked fine and has worked fine until this issue today. I tried doing that again but it di... Read more

I've had this computer for a little over a year and never had any problems with it. It was working fine this morning and I shut the lid to go do stuff but when i returned and tried to turn on the laptop it started beeping about every five seconds. The screen is black and I am unable to turn it on or off. It just stays at a black screen beeping every five seconds. I've tried holding the power button to turn it off but it wont do anything. It just keeps beeping every five seconds. Help!!  There were no error messages before I turned off my laptop and nothing like this has ever happen.

my laptop will not turn on, no light, fan, nothing. I have tried charging it with the battery out, but the charge light does not go on?

Answer:my laptop does not turn on, no light.

Have you checked your PSU? Is it OK?If the PSU is OK then it maybe that your power jack is not connecting properly with your motherboard. You will either have to open it up and investigate or take it to someone who knows how to repair faults like that.___________________________________________? Hi guys, this is my very first forum post ever in my life and I hope I get super help.So there I was working on my computer one day. I was downloading a youtube video with a program that has scheduled shutdown computer option upon download completion. I turned that on and turned off my monitor. After about 1-2 mins I noticed the power and HDD indicator lights in front of the CPU casing is turned off so I thought for some reason my pc probably turned off. I tried turning it on by pressing the power button and at the same time turned my monitor on. It turned on with a light-brown colored background so I quickly hit restart but then it won't turn on. I plugged by USB in hoping it would try to boot from the USB (my bios settings primary boot is set to removable devices). Then I pressed the power button again but THIS TIME I noticed that a very bad wire-burning type smell is coming out so I instantly turned EVERYTHING off. Later I opened my CPU casing and tried smelling the devices and found that probably the smell is coming from my second (and newer) hard disk that is about 10 months old. So, finding no hope and ideas I threw myself to computerhope.com's forum from my school laptop...please anyone help me out ASAP!Note that when I still try to turn my the pc on the power supply fan, the ethernet lights and even the DVD-rom drive works; so I am totally confused! My pc is  Intel Core2duo, 2GB ram/memory, 256 internal video memory, primary hard-disk=160gb and secondary... Answer:CPU/Power Supply fans work but indicator light in front doesn't turn on.

Minimal boot is where I'd start. If motherboard has integrated video use that, disconnect all drives, and just have the motherboard set up with 1 ram stick, and try to boot. If you get it to boot then shut it down and add 1 component and boot up again if no boot then you found the cause if it boots then move to next component to add and repeat. If no boot on minimal boot, then swap single Ram stick with another if you had more than 1 stick. If still no minimal boot swap power supply. If still no minimal boot its something local to motherboard. Unistall CPU and check for damage and reinstall it, apply thermal compound and heatsink and try another boot. If still no boot, I'd buy or use a different motherboard unless you have a POST card to work with and want to troubleshoot deeper.Cooked component smell is not a good thing, if you can localize the smell and find burned traces or parts that would be a help in determining if this can be saved or if you need to start a new build. I have only seen one hard drive smoke before and that was my friend way back when SATA drives first came out and it had a P connection as well as SATA power. He hooked up both and cooked it. On a small warning in the box it warns not to plug power to both. I'd doubt if your drive is one of these drives given that you mentioned that it is 10 months old.

My problem is actually similar to the following:
http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/730934-dimension-4700-light-flickering.html
This thread however had no responses.

I know a little more about my problem and hope it can be solved here.. Sorry for making this post so long, but this problem is a real bugger and I'm giving all the info I can.

The problem: When the computer doesn't start
When I plug in the computer, pressing the power button does nothing. This problem is aggravated in winters (weird but true) and when the D-Link ethernet card is plugged in (whichever slot).

When it does start:
In summers, I leave it powered for sometimes, say 20 min.
Gradually the power light on cabinet starts blinking rapidly (on pressing the power button).. a little later the HDD lights also start blinking. The CPU fan turns in jerks and in sync with these lights. A little later, the computer boots normally and works fine after that.
Also, operating it increases the temperature, and subsequently the computer can be made to start without problems.. till it cools down or I disconnect mains.

How I have to start it when it doesn't:
In winters, the above procedure doesn't work. Then I can try one of two things (I usually avoid turning the comp at all, use my laptop instead, since I don't like either method)
I can point a hairdryer from a safe distance at the motherboard, and keep the power button pressed. It starts in a little while.
OR, this is possibly a worse method..... Read more

Answer:Computer startup problem: power light flickers, fans turn in jerks

Have you replaced the BIOS battery? after 5 years its is most likely dead or nearly dead by now. Get your multimeter on it and check it's voltage (my money is on this)
Have you tested the CPU fan to see if it spins up OK, test on another PC if you have one?
Have you tried booting up to just the POST with NO drives connected with power?
Tried another PSU? Does this PSU work OK in another PC?

Hello, My dell monitors will not function as secondary monitors for my lenovo X1.With another X1 they perform ok. All monitors (I have tested 5 so far), fail in the same way, they go into "Entering power save" mode on power up when connected to the X1. All cables and monitors have been checked with another PC and another X1.My X1 detects the existence of the monitor (shows it as secondary monitor in windows control panel), but monitor only briefly shows "entering power save mode" when connected to X1 and goes blank. David

I have a Toshiba Laptop and all I get is a white light when I power it on, it has come on before when I messed about with the RAM such as swaping the slot and trying a different module. It was on working and just done it again so I am lost. Any Ideas, thanks in advance.

Answer:Laptop White Light when trying to turn it on.

Try removing the battery and charger and hold the power button in for 30 seconds. Replace the battery and charger and see if it boots.

I have a HP Pavillon laptop that I purchased in 2008. It runs windows vista. Last night I put the screen down (which makes my laptop sleep) and came back after 30 minutes. THe light turned on for a little bit, but then it turned back off. The CPU and fan is running and I can see the display (barely), but the light will not turn on. This morning I turned it back on without the battery (but the power cord was plugged in) and it ran fine. I turned it back off and brought it to school with me. Now the laptop screen will not turn back on again. How do I fix this problem and get my laptop light to turn back on again?
Note: THe day before, I updated windows vista (not sure if that has to do with anything).

Answer:HP Laptop screen light will not turn on

This could be the backlight bulb or the LCD inverter.

Please post the model of the computer.
