BIOS update without suspending Bitlocker has triggered a recovery and on start up I am prompted for the recovery key

Question: BIOS update without suspending Bitlocker has triggered a recovery and on start up I am prompted for the recovery key

I know a BIOS update on my Latitude with Windows 8 and Bitlocker activated on the O/S drive triggers Bit locker recovery on startup. I don't have the recovery key and so am stuck. How to recover without the Bit Locker recovery key?

Preferred Solution: BIOS update without suspending Bitlocker has triggered a recovery and on start up I am prompted for the recovery key

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: BIOS update without suspending Bitlocker has triggered a recovery and on start up I am prompted for the recovery key

The solution I found was to install the previous version of the BIOS, but without being able to boot into Windows, I needed to install the previous version of the BIOS in DOS. Some server products provide a F12 boot up menu option to roll back a BIOS update, but this is not available in my Latitude.

I downloaded the correct BIOS version (the additional info section made specific reference to it being installable from Windows or DOS). I prepared a bootable USB key (to a dos prompt) and copied the bios installer executable to the memory stick.

Because secure boot (UEFI) is enabled, it is not possible to boot up from USB key, so legacy boot mode needs to be enabled. There were 3 settings that required changing in the BIOS before I was able to boot from the USB key.

Once I was able to boot into DOS from the USB key and got to the DOS prompt, I ran the BIOS update exe. The laptop rebooted, installed the previous BIOS version and then rebooted again. I pressed F2 to get into the BIOS and changed back the settings as they were (secure boot UEFI). I then managed to boot into windows without being prompted for the Bit locker recovery key.

You able to export or view the Bitlocker recovery key by going to Control Panel -> Security -> Bit locker Management, and temporarily suspend protection (until the next reboot). It is possible to run a commandlet to specify the number of reboots bit locker should be suspended for.

You may find that installing the previous version of the BIOS does not work. I am not sure which BIOS version values are help by Bit locker to trigger a change, but in my case I can only assume the previous version was identical.

Hope this helps.

Due to AMT issues I updated BIOS. Afterwards I have, shortly after start/resume, right clicks triggered. This happens both on Windows and Linux. I have touchpad disabled so they are from track point.

I have a Dell XPS 15 9550, and after a recent BIOS upgrade, it seems to have lost the PIN, and is asking me to enter a BitLocker recovery key, which so far at least, I've been unable to find.  So does anyone know how to:

Reenter the PIN so that the system boots normally (TPM/UEFI/etc.)?
If that is not possible, re-install Windows 10?

The system was upgraded right after purchase from Windows 10 Home to Pro, otherwise is pretty stock.
When I go through the various recovery options to Troubleshoot:

Reset this PC:  It asks again for the recovery key (which I do not have)
Advanced > System Restore:  Same (recovery key which I do not have)

I realize that the without the Bitlocker recovery key, that the data may be all lost, but what I would like to do is get the system running again, at least to the point I can re-install Windows.  I have the PIN of course, but cannot seem to get to the point where the system prompts for it, it is stuck on the Bitlocker key, which I cannot find.

Suggestions?

Answer:Dell XPS 15 BIOS Upgrade - Reboot asking for Bitlocker Recovery Key

The TPM hasn't lost the key.  The reason you're seeing this prompt is because the TPM performs a platform integrity check to make sure that no key hardware in the system has changed, since such changes could be part of an attempt to get the TPM to release its decryption key under inappropriate circumstances. A BIOS update constitutes a change to a key portion of your hardware, since for example someone might attempt a BIOS downgrade in order to reintroduce a security vulnerability.  That's why it's asking for the entire Recovery Key (which can be used to decrypt the drive) rather than just the PIN, which relies on the TPM to still release its key.If you didn't back up your Recovery Key though, you are completely stuck.  If this system is joined to an Active Directory domain, it's possible that the domain admin configured Recovery Keys to be backed up to Active Directory.  Otherwise, when you first set up BitLocker, you are prompted to either print it, store it as a text file (which Windows specifically does not allow you to save to the drive being encrypted, for this reason) or save it to your Microsoft account.  If you can't find your Recovery Key in any of those places, then there is no recovery mechanism, which is by design. I personally choose to print mine to PDF and then copy/paste the key into a Secure Note in my LastPass vault so that I can access that information from my phone.

Hi
After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
update:
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

Answer:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

Hi,

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?

Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.

I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

Hello and good afternoon, I have a issue where a manager started the Bitlocker process on the SD card in his Surface Pro 3

with Windows 8.1. The Bitlocker attempt failed at 3.4% completed but the SD card ended up being Bitlocked without providing the Bitlocker Recovery Key (I've never seen this happen before). He doesn't know the password for the SD card and of course
I've been tasked to somehow release the encryption so that he can get the required information off of the SD card.

Is there anything that can be done to release the encryption on the SD card or has the SD card been made non-accessible moving forward?

tatot,

What was your BIOS version before the flashing? (BIOS version compatibility)

If it was a 1.x version you can only flash with another 1.x version, if it was a 2.x version you can only flash with another 2.x version.
If your system shipped with Windows 7 and you upgraded to Windows 8 you cannot use the ones marked "Not for Ugrades"

If you are unable to reflash you will need to contact the Acer Technical Support in your area for options.

Hello All! After a BIOS update (offerd by Lenovo Update) - and the automatic restart - the laptop doesn't boot. The led lights, the fan spins for a couple of seconds, but only black screen, no logo, no BIOS, no Windows.  Removing the CMOS-battery (for longer time) or pressing fn/win+B/R with the power button doesn't help. I'm trying to make a flash drive to flash the BIOS following these instructions. However I'm unable to retrieve the BIOS.wph or other proper file to use for the flash drive. I was using these originalfiles (both 2.08 and 2.5x), but neither with 7zip nor by installing the .exe (without installing the update itself) did produce the file I need. Could somene please help, where I could find the proper file (.wph or other) to make a BIOS flash with Phoenix recovery tools for a Thinkpad Edge 430, or whether you have an idea what other soultion (different software instead of Wincrisis for ex.) could I use to get my BIOS back into life again? Thanks in advance!

Answer:Failed BIOS-update on E430 - need wph for BIOS recovery

Unfortunately Lenovo laptops do not provide BIOS recovery functionality, either get the laptop in for warranty, or find a local computer repair shop that will reprogram your SOIC8 BIOS chip, they usually charge $40

Model: Envy m6-k088ca sleekbook - out of warranty I have been having problems with the screen going black and not recovering without a reboot. There was a BIOS update available, so I went for it. But in the middle of the update, as I feared it might, the screen went black. I left it for about an hour then turned it off. Turned it on again, nothing. I tried the key combo recovery method, which didn't seem to work. Then I tried the USB key method. It started recovery, then gave me the error "system BIOS recovery failed - unable to open BIOS signature file" over and over quite a few times, then, nothing. I tried the key combo again, holding them down for much longer this time, and it worked. It started recovering the BIOS - and then, again, the screen went black in the middle. :-( That was 15 minutes ago. It's just sitting there, running, with a black screen. Power light is solid. Wifi light is red (for off). Nothing flashes, nothing beeps. Anyone have any suggestions re my next move?

Hello everybody, after flashing the bios on my E430 I'm experiencing a little trouble. Flashing went just fine and according to the plan, no errors or anything occured. After the flashing has been done everything was working except for one thing - I can't do the system restore to factory default (the one from HDD) - when I chose this option it wants me to put recovery media which of course I don't have. I checked the HDD in Windows and the recovery partition is ok but the recovery system doesn't seem to see it. Did I make something wrong? Or is there some bios settings I'm missing? Thank you very much for your help.

Answer:Windows recovery after BIOS update

Hi, noidea1

What operating system are you running? Also, have you tried to recover the system using the recovery partition by tapping Enter during POST? When you tap Enter, a menu should appear. One of the options on this menu should be to Recover your system. After pressing the associated key, the machine should recover to a factory state.

Thanks in advance,
Adam

Recently, my motherboard imploded and I had to replace it. Being on a strict budget, I took my pc to a lower end pc shop in town. They were very helpful and replaced my old Intel motherboard with a Gigabyte G31M-S2L with BIOS version: Award Software International, Inc. F4, 1/2/2008.
I have 2 HDDs, a 1tb drive with Windows 7 installed, as well as a 2tb drive with Windows 10 (before the motherboard failed, the Windows 10 drive was the only one I actually used).
When I brought the computer home, however, and tried do boot up into Windows 10, the computer could not get past "Verifying dmi pool data" at the bios screen. When I enter my bios and switch my Windows 7 drive to be the primary boot device, it boots up normally and I can access all my files on both drives through My Computer.
How can I fix this issue? Is there a possibility that the BIOS version is too old to run Windows 10, and thus meaning that I should try updating my BIOS version? Or does the fact that it boots into Windows 7 without a hitch mean that I should just download a Windows 10 recovery disk and try repairing my drive this way?

Answer:Cannot get through BIOS update or recovery SOLVED

I figured out what was happening. The muscle that it was putting into the BIOS update was causing the laptop to overheat. Once I let it cool down and added a table fan to the two big fans constantly running in a cooling pad beneath it, it was able to get through the BIOS recovery.  I realized this because it happened before when I tried to install Windows 10. It overheated and crashed every time. The BIOS update is a much shorter process but I guess it's intense

I am about to use the Recovery Disc for the first time and have a question about the procedure.

*Would an updated BIOS affect the recovery process?*

Since using my notebook, I have installed the latest BIOS for it, and was wondering if the product recovery would be affected at all by this - and if so, does anybody have any idea where to get the orignial BIOS, or how to "rollback" the BIOS as I noticed that the BIOS backs it self up when being updated with a newer version.

Thanks in advange.

Answer:Does a BIOS update affect the recovery of a machine?

Hi,

No, I can calm you. A different BIOS DOES NOT affect the recovery process in any way.

I don?t know how you get till such mindbreaking questions, but I can assure you, no matter which BIOS is installed: A recovery works always!
You don?t need any rollback or older BIOS, just recover your machine and be happy.

Hi,

I know this is is quite old computer, but until now it was just enough good for my usage.
Anyway, after I have done a recovery of the Windows Vista OS that came with my computer, I got a notification from one of Toshiba tools that there is an updated BIOS available for my computer.
I've downloaded it and tried to perform an update. After the process had (probably) finished, the computer did not react to touchpad and keyboard. I was not sure if the update was really successful, especially because it looked like the computer was is frozen state. So I left it for next +/- 30 minutes but no change.
Then I decided to reset it as even the power button was not working. So I had to remove the battery and unplug the AC power.

... and the computer was (almost) dead then.

Now it is so that when I press the power button it seems to power up, but the screen remains blank, the fan is working and Windows is not booting. It just makes one short scratching noise from the DVD drive and this is all.

My question is, what is the recovery procedure in my situation ? I've tried to look for some potential help on the Internet and I found some forum posts or articles stating that there are some recovery procedures for different BIOSes, but what is the procedure for my BIOS ? The only thing that I found "working" was that if I press the power button holding Fn+Esc keys, the laptop powers on with flashing power button. But how to force BIOS recovery flashing procedure ?

Answer:x230 Laptop BIOS Recovery from Update Failure

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that BIOS update failed in your Lenovo ThinkPad X230 and is not turning on properly now.

A failed BIOS update could have bricked the motherboard probably. Since it?s a BIOS chip failure, it would be difficult to get it fixed on your own since the BIOS is soldered to the motherboard. Sorry to hear that your system ran out of warranty.

Best Regards,
Mithun.

I need to try and do a system recovery on my Satellite U400-146.
However i don't think it came with a disc.
Does anyone know how initiate the system recovery on this laptop?

Answer:Satellite U400-146 - How to start recovery without the recovery disk

Hi

The Recovery disk was not provided with the notebook because there was a tool called Toshiba Recovery disk Creator which allows you to create a recovery disk!
Please check if you can create a recovery disk using this tool!

I have a customer's NB200 on the bench. It came in with complete OS failure and would not boot from either the OS partition or the Recovery Partition.

I have checked the Hard Disk and it is in perfect working order. However it seems that all is not well as I cannot get it to boot from the recovery partition even after holding doen the 0 key.

I tried to instruct it to start from the BOOT.INI file by pointing a 'revoery' option at the partition but it just comes up with an error saying <Windows Path>\system32\HAL file is either missing or corrupt. Does anyone know how I should instruct the partition to start or how I could extract the information from the image files?

Answer:NB200-10G Recovery Partition - Cannot start recovery process

If you check page 48 in user?s manuals you will find exact description how to start recovery installation. The procedure on this NB200 is same or, at least, similar to all notebooks delivered with HDD recovery image. Please check it.

Useful document about HDD recovery installation you can find in ?How to..? category > http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=58

Hi,
I have a weird issue regarding Bitlocker and the TPM on Latitude e7470s running Windows 7 Ent.  I've had three laptops trigger Bitlocker on boot, we enter the key and boot into Windows 7 Ent.  We goto Bitlocker Drive Encryption Management to Suspend/Resume to reset and I receive an error message that a compatible TPM Module cannot be found.  When looking in Device Manager the TPM is gone.
We start with a base Win 7 Ent image, and then I use Dell Command Update to install the drivers, including the Broadcom TPM Driver.  In my research I've read that if you don't have an entry for the TPM under "Security" then it might be listed under System.  It is not listed under System unless there is a code name for the module.  I've also read that you should use the Microsoft Drivers for the TPM and not the manufacturer's drivers, is that a true statement?
We use Latitude 7440's, 7450s, and 7470s in our environment.  The issue is isolated to the 7470's only.
Has anyone else encountered this "disappearing TPM" issue before?
Thanks for all of your help.

Answer:Latitude e7470, Bitlocker triggered, TPM gone from Device Manager

Thank you for posting.
If you haven't tried it already please update the BIOS to 1.5.3 or higher and check to see if the problem continues.  You may download 1.5.3 here.
Please let me know if this corrects the issue.

Hi and welcome,,
did you upgrade memory ? If you did .. upgrade ... insert original memory .. try to start your s10-3 machine

..press F2 to access bios, then press F9 and load default settings in order to get machine works properly after new bios update.  Lenovo cannot guarantee compatibilty with all memory manufacturers and modules..
...shut down and re-insert mem upgrade ...try to start ...

I have a T61 6459 CTO that had XP SP3 on it. I upgraded to WIndows 7. I tried to install TVTVRNR450_025en, but I get an error msg "Rescue and Recovery does not support installing from the Operating System which upgrade from a legacy pre-load system." I tried deleting all old RNR and CSS programs in the old files after the install, but nothing seems to work. There is nothing listed in my add/remove programs. My Thinkvantage button doesn't work. How do I remove the old RNR? Should I have done that prior to installing Windows 7? Do I need to re-install my XP backup and start over? My Bios update extracts, but doesn't install. Help!

Answer:T61 upgraded to Windows 7, now can't install Rescue and Recovery or Bios update.

Hi, FSURN82

I did some research and was able to find this thread from Lenovo Forums. There are a few other people having similar issues. For some, installing an older version of Rescue and Recovery (sometimes even the one for their OS before the upgrade) would work fine. For some, however, they could not get it to work, so they would create backups manually using Windows.

As for the BIOS issue, what version are you currently running and to what version are you trying to upgrade?

Thanks,
Adam

Referring to an old thread of mine...

I tried a while ago to update the BIOS from v1.80 to v1.90 (both through the Service Station automatic system update tool and the direct download of the BIOS updater).

Each time the BIOS updater ran, it aborted claiming that the battery was low (it wasn't), the AC power wasn't on (it was) and the existing BIOS version was greater than the new version (it wasn't).

The real problem seems to be that the BIOS version (as reported in "Toshiba HWSetup") is:

+BIOS Version = V234567890. 00/00/00000000000+
+EC Version = 1.80+

However, in the Toshiba PC Diagnostic Tool the BIOS version on the Basic Information page is correctly reported as 1.80

At the time I couldn't be bothered to blat my disk with the factory image and try again. I hoped that Toshiba would fix the BIOS updater to solve the issue. Didn't happen.

They released v2.00 of the BIOS in June 2011 and it still wouldn't update. So I backed up my data and tried to blat the machine back to the factory state. What a nightmare...

The recovery image doesn't work properly at all!

The first bit works (the initial partition creation and image copy), but after Windows starts and the Toshiba factory script kicks in, all manner of problems start.

First, the thing gets stuck repeatedly in a "system performance evaluation" process. This happens in several phases of reboots as drivers are installed. Then there are a bunch of scripting bug error me... Read more

Answer:Satellite A660-18N BIOS update & HDD recovery fails (re-visited)

In front of me I have 3 years old notebook. In last three years Toshiba has offered 3 BIOS updates. I don?t care about it and still use original version that I got with my notebook. I mean, why to change anything and start this ?risky? update if everything works properly and it does.

Many times I read here that people write about problems with BIOS update and damaged BIOS. Such risk is not worth for me just to have newer version.

Anyway, if you want to have all latest stuff on your notebook it is definitely your legitimate right. Generally speaking BIOS updates are tested before Toshiba offers them for download so I really don?t understand why do you have such problems. The issue with recovery installation is also strange.

Few months ago friend of mine has bought A660 and I helped him to create recovery DVD and we have also tested whole recovery procedure including all three options:
Recover to out-of-box state
Recover without changing the hard drive partitions
Recover to a custom size partition

Everything worked perfectly so I?m really confused about all you write.

Unfortunately I cannot help you with all this. When I could have your notebook in front of me to see what happen exactly, it will be much easier to understand all this.
I have updated BIOS on different notebooks and I was lucky because every time everything went well.

Your notebook has valid warranty so I recommend you to contact Toshiba service provider in your country and ask for some ass... Read more

Hi lads!

Yesterday I accidentally ran BIOS update for my A350D-113 satellite, and computer hung up in process. Now all i got is this common black screen, fan spinning, and CD-rom checked.
I know there are threads about this issue, but all those directions are very different. Can anyone help me with step by step "what to do"?
I don't have usb floppy, but i suppose a common CD-R should be fine replacement.

I'm rly desperate.
Thx in advance.

Hi buddy,

If the BIOS update failed you can do nothing. You need professional help from an authorized service provider. The technicians can try to reflash the ROM module.

Here is a list of them:

We have setup windows 7 enterprise and have encrypted the machine. Everytime i reboot it asks for the recovery key. I have done the following. We have MBAM setup and the keys are stored automatically. I have had success with older models but this specific model
is giving me a hard time.

1. Made the C drive the first boot device

2. Paused bitlocker, rebooted and resumed.

3. Removed Encryption. Rebooted and encrypted again.

4. Downgraded TPM to 1.2 from 2.0

My Surface Pro 3 shut down after my battery ran down flat a week ago. On trying to turn my system on, the Surface Pro 3 requested for my Bitlocker Recovery key. I was able to get the Bitlocker Recovery Key using another device and I used it and my

Hi,

I have a new Windows 8.1 machine and I wish to encrypt the drive using Bitlocker. It gives me 4 options to save a recovery key
1. Save to your Microsoft account
2. Save to a USB flash drive
3. Save to a file
4. Print the recovery key

Option 1 isn't available as I'm logged on using a local account.
i. What is the difference between options 2 & 3? i.e. I could save to a file on a USB drive
ii. Does option 2 mean the USB flash drive cannot then be used for other purposes?
iii. Does option 2 also mean I could use a USB external hard drive, or does it have to be a flash drive?
iv. Once the recovery key has been created, can the key then be copied to other locations or is it only going to work where Bitlocker puts the key?
v. Just thinking about printing the recovery key - can this be used without a password to access the drive, how sensitive/important is the printed key?

N00b questions, I'd very much appreciate your answers.

Thanks

Answer:Bitlocker recovery key

hello and welcome to eight forms , my opinion , difference between 2 and 3 ,2 will create a file and put it on the flash drive for yah,3 you will have to move the file it creates to a flash drive of external drive manually 'I would think you could take the file it create and put it where ever you want , I don't use bitlocker ,if I did I would print it and put away for safe keeping ,like I try to do will all passwords .and if the drive is pass worded that you store the file on ,then yes someone would need the drive password to access the files on that drive, is not that what passwords are for ,I would assume that there are people who could hack your passwords like they do others ,good luck

Answer:Bitlocker recovery key

Hello @pcsl, Welcome back to the HP Support forum. Thank you for your post. BitLocker is a Microsoft software designed to protect your PC against offline attacks, unauthorized access typically if your PC gets stolen. BitLocker is full disk encryption software. More info:>> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitLocker>> http://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-bitlocker-encryption-windows-10 BitLocker was activated by someone and during the activation time it prompts the user to save/store the key in a safe place. If this is company owned asset/PC, you should turn to your company's IT support guys and they should be able to provide you with the recovery key. If this is your own device, most probably you use a slightly different BitLocker version for certain PCs and tablets known as Device encryption. Probably your key is stored in Microsoft OneDrive with your Microsoft account here :>> https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey More info>> https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/12/microsoft-may-have-your-encryption-key-heres-...>> http://windowsitpro.com/microsoft-surface/locating-your-microsoft-surface-bitlocker-recovery-key>> http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21433-bitlocker-recovery-unlock-drive-windows-8-a.html Please, note that it is very important for security reasons that you keep the encryption key (Bitlocker key) in a secure place so that only you know it. Let me know if this works for you ... BitLocker can not be inadvertently turned on. Someone who has access to your notebook has encrypted the drive with Bitlocker technology. Hi forum,
I have used the recovery DVD of my Qosmio F10 with Windows XP MCE.
After the complete process, windows failes to start. Even the saved mode does not work.

Do you have any ideas how to solve this?
Which information do you need?

Thank you Daniel

Answer:Re: After recovery with recovery DVD Windows start failes

Hello!

Try to use an Installation disk of Windows (Xp, Vista) and full format the partition where the SO is installed (generally is C: ). Maybe you have some problems on hardware level (bad sectors on HDD). Formating will help to avoid those possible bad sectors.

Also try to see if you can install a fresh copy of windows from an installation disk and check if windows works after that. If YES then seems you have a problem with the Recovery DVD and/or DVD drive. In that case either you use an external DVD drive or try to duplicate the Recovery DVD in hope that the new Recovery DVD will work with your internal DVD drive.

Good Luck

PS: One thing that I can think of is maybe you have updated the BIOS and maybe there are some changes related of AHCI / IDE default settings. It is well known that when you install windows with IDE settings for example, when you try to boot with the AHCI settings it won't work. And viceversa. See if you have such a option in BIOS and try to toggle it and check if it works. Or put the BIOS on default setting.

I'm new to UEFI and after a failed BIOS update, I removed and completely reformatted the HDD on another machine, wiping out the UEFI partition. So now I cannot load Dell Recovery to re-flash/repair the BIOS.
I have completed all the steps for notebook computers as suggested on Dell Support here: BIOS Recovery 2 options on a Dell PC or Tablet (http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/4/SLN300716/en)
I formatted a bootable external USB key with a copy of the BIOS package properly renamed as instructed. However, when I use the CTRL + Esc key combination and power up the computer, the system does not boot to Dell Recovery, but instead the power LED flashes a 3,3 code (3 amber flashes, 3 white flashes) which indicates "Recovery Image Not Found" according to the Dell Knowledge Base. I presume this code is given because it cannot find the Dell Recovery application since it (as well as the entire UEFI partition) is now gone after I reformatted the HDD.
So, I know what the problem is, I just don't know what to do at this point to fix it.

Hello,
I recently attempted to update my BIOS (Gigabyte F8 to F10) so that I could upgrade my CPU from a sandy bridge to an ivy bridge. I did not do the cpu upgrade, yet, just the BIOS flash. The flash, using Gigabyte's q-flash) went fine, according to the flash results screen. I then rebooted, and the computer when into the Startup Repair Infinite Loop; it goes through POST, and then says "Windows is Starting" and the animated Windows logo (where the four colored window panes fly at you and then pulse/glow while the OS loads) begins, but then freezes just a moment after it starts. The system then goes into the repair loop.

The first thing I did was to re-flash back to F8. That did nothing though. But just FYI, my BIOS is back at F8.

I have tried the recovery method from the tutorials section, but I'm stuck and posting in that thread has not yielded any replies. So, I'm posting here.
Before I even get to the editing of the registry, I'm stuck in that a "DIR" command on my c-drive shows "File Not Found." Not sure what to do from here.
Thanks for any tips, advice, explanations, etc.!!
Kieran

Answer:startup repair infinite loop after BIOS update, recovery not working

Confirm the Partition Marked Active is 100mb System Reserved (if you have it) or Win7 partition (if you don't).

Then run Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times until Win7 starts.

If this fails boot into System Recovery Options to System Restore backward until you find a working configuration.

I had a working Vostro 3500 laptop and was doing maintenance to bring it up to date.
I downloaded and installed the recommended BIOS update for this laptop...

Dell Vostro 3500 System BIOS
3500A12.EXE | Windows/DOS (3 MB) BIOS Release date 7/21/2014 Last Updated 7/21/2014 Recommended

The BIOS update failed and left the computer with no working BIOS. F2 is dead. It will not boot.
I am pretty sure that there is a backup or primitive BIOS still in there, as when I start the machine with no battery and just AC power using the End key it continuously tries to read data from a 2GB flash drive. I assume that it would like to reload the BIOS from a file.

I know how to get the ROM contents from the above file using the /writeromfile parameter.

The big question is, what kind of file does the 3500 want to read, and what is the file name that it is looking for? Does the flash drive need to be bootable? Is this an AMI or Phoenix BIOS?

Can someone please help?

Thanks,
Terry

Answer:Vostro 3500 BIOS Update Failed - Recovery Procedure Needed

Here is how to recover from a failed BIOS flash update of a Vostro 3500 laptop...
1.  Download the Dell BIOS update .exe file to a USB flash drive.
2.  Run the .exe file with /writehdrfile parameter
3.  Run the .exe file with /writeromfile parameter
4.  Copy the .hdr file to winery50.hdr
5.  Remove the battery and AC power from the dead computer
6.  Insert the flash drive into the dead computer's USB port
7.  Hold down the End key and then connect the AC power
8.  Dead computer reads USB flash and asks if update should be done
9.  Allow the update to finish and then reboot.
10.  Computer is now working normally.

I read similar topic: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19593398.
there is a guide:
1.  Download the Dell BIOS update .exe file to a USB flash drive.
2.  Run the .exe file with /writehdrfile parameter
3.  Run the .exe file with /writeromfile parameter
4.  Copy the .hdr file to winery50.hdr
5.  Remove the battery and AC power from the dead computer
6.  Insert the flash drive into the dead computer's USB port
7.  Hold down the End key and then connect the AC power
8.  Dead computer reads USB flash and asks if update should be done
9.  Allow the update to finish and then reboot.
10.  Computer is now working normally.
But I do not know which key to press me (End or another)? And need use flash card or sd card?
And I do not know how need called my file: winery50.hdr or winery30.hdr maybe....
Can someone please help? Thanks, Alex

Hello, My bitlocker drive got corrupted. However, I just need to extract a few files from that drive. Is there any free software that will do that? I have tried repair-bde but that didn't work. I tried M3 recovery software and that shows the files but it is too expensive to buy.

Can anyone help me please. I am not very technical so no jargon please. I have a mini asus laptop and I have only had it for about 3 months. I tried to switch it on recently and it says 'enter recovery key to get going again' I didn't know I had a recovery key but I went onto another computer to micosoft search and I have my key number. When I enter it it says 'diagnosing' then it gives me options to either 'continue to windows 10' settings' restart' advanced settings' etc.
I have tried them all in turn but nothing works. It accepts my key number and then just says diagnosing and then goes back to the original screen saying 'enter key' again. I have entered the key several times and then chose a different option but non work. How can I get back into my laptop?
Any advice please? Thanks

Hi

I have implemented BitLocker To Go at our company through GPO and recovery keys are backed up into AD DS to the computer object. I am now looking for a way to migrate these recovery keys to an other computer object as we are currently refreshing our workstations.
I have been trying to write a PowerShell script to backup the recovery key into AD when the removable drive is connected and unlocked on the new computer. You can retrieve the ID of the removable drive by the below cmdlet.
manage-bde -protectors F: -get
I am then trying to backup the recovery key using the below cmdlet.
manage-bde -protectors -adbackup F: -id {<id>}
This returns an error.
ERROR: Parameter "-ID" requires an argument.

Any ideas? Does this cmdlet only work for internal disks? Is there a better approach to migrate recovery keys to a new computer?

Thanks!

Answer:BitLocker recovery key not working

Welcome to Seven Forums.

I don't know anything about the BitLocker which is I understand is bundled with Enterprise and Ultimate Editions. Still I was watching this thread to read about this issue as it developed. As there has been no development for 19 hours on this thread, I now feel that there is no solution for retrieving the system.

You may wait a day or two more to see if some suggestions come up but the only way out now seems to be to clean reinstall Windows 7 all over again. I hope you would not lose too much data. I don't think that the locked up files shall be visible with Ubuntu and Hiren's DVDs.

Hey Guys,
Im new here so apologies if this in the wrong section.
Basically, massive problem here - I have a WD MyBook External HDD and have used BitLocker to Go on it from Windows 7 RC, and I kept the recovery key in my main HD Documents folder. (This was a x86 install).
Last night I (stupidly) backed up the key to the External HDD automatically forgetting it would be locked later (as it unlocks on startup so I forget it would be secured elsewhere) and went ahead to clean format my PC to a Windows 7 x64 RTM Install.

Now, when I come to plug in the drive today, instead of prompting for a password as it SHOULD, I instead am askked for the recovery key which I stupidly enclosed in the External HD itself.

Naturally, this External Drive contains my life, several GB of music, all of my college work, images, videos and so forth and I cannot really do with losing it all.

The only other information I can give is that at no point was the HD fully encrypted by BLocker, instead I used to cancel it at each start up and it never passed 3.5% so does this mean not ALL of the data is encrypted and maybe the key I copied into there last night may still be safe (no BL encryption went on after copying it?)

If so, how would I go about possibly finding this? Is there any other way to access the drive without getting the BLocker popup? I already tried a Live boot disk, cmd prompt etc?

Thank you.

Do you need both? My last job never used Bitlocker and my new job requires it. I had been backing up the Bitlocker Recovery Key text file but then noticed the .Bek file on a computer that had hidden objects enabled.

I deployed a few laptops and if I need it, I will have to track them down.....I'm hoping not. Not trying to be lazy, I worked 12 hours yesterday and my mind hurts. Haha.

Any suggestions in recovering the key which is already backed up in the encrypted HDD.

Answer:Bitlocker Recovery Key - lost

Hello Teky, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you format the encrypted drive, it will pretty much destroy any chance of recovering the drive.

If you don't have the BitLocker recovery key or password, then decrypting or recovering the drive will just about be impossible.

Answer:bitlocker security RECOVERY

Hello Kelly, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You would have already needed to save your BitLocker recovery key to another location for safe keeping to be able to use it.

If you did, then you can use the tutorial below that's for your OS or removable drive for how to know what recovery key to use from the recovery ID.

I have the Recovery ID for BitLocker, but I do not have the Recovery key. Is there a way to look up the Key with the Recovery ID?

Thanks,
Stephanie

Answer:Have Bitlocker Recovery ID, need to find Key

Hi,
Could you please explain a bit for the Recovery ID of the BitLocker? Do you mean the first 8 characters of the password? And are we in a domain environment?

If we are in a domain environment, we could use
Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption Recovery Password Viewer to find the recovery password through AD server. Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption Recovery Password Viewer is an optional feature that's included with the Remote Server Administration Toolkit
(RSAT), which you can install by using the Add Roles and Features
option in the Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 Server Manager or from the
Programs and Features option in Control Panel.
And if we are in a workgroup, and the recovery key is missing, please take a look at the below article for all the possible BitLocker recovery methods:

Hello,

I'm curious under what circumstances a recovery key can change and the numerical ID stays the same.  I conducted a test that seems to indicate that the Numerical ID changes if the Recovery Key is changed or if the system is decrypted and re-encrypted.
I can't tell if these are the only conditions under which the Numerical ID would change.
We have a system that we can't get into that the printed backup of the Numerical ID matches what we see on screen but the Recovery Key we have doesn't work.

Hello,
my laptop has freezed, I restart it with power button but now, at start up, BitLocker said that:

You need to enter your recovery key because Secure Boot has been disabled. Either Secure Boot must be re-enabled, or BitLocker must be suspended for Windows to start normally.

I gone to UEFI settings and define a password to re-enabled Secure Boot but BitLocker when I restart comptuer said that Bios secure parameters has changed... It doesn't solve the problem.

The problem is I don't have my recovery key. I tried to recover my recovery key using Microsoft account but I had to update my phone number and so my security settings are locked for one month. My question is :
Is it possible to boot on Ubuntu USB key or plug HDD to an Ubuntu computer, copy files and decrypt them one by one with my password session ?Is it possible to retrieve my recovery key using Windows command line and session password ? (I can access to Windows recovery menu so I have access to commands line.)Is a program to decrypt completely my hard drive exists ? I will write it on a USB key, start it, enter my session password and it will decrypt all the disk or something like that.
Thanks a lot.

Answer:How can I recover my BitLocker recovery key

What do you mean by "session password?"

Assuming you are using a TPM with BitLocker (which is the default) then there is no way to recover your drive without the recovery key. That is the entire point of BitLocker.

I have activated Bitlocker on two identical W8.1 pro machines, and on the first (C1) I have the option to use a password when logging into the computer, but the other (C2) only ask for the recovery key from USB stick. Both computers have no TPM, so Bitlocker is enabled without TPM, but this should give the possibility to start the computers using a password on 8.1 pro.

Can I somehow add a password to C2, or is my only option to remove the Bitlocker encryption and try again?

Answer:Bitlocker Recovery Key Not Working

Hi,
The Bitlocker recovery key is used for recovering the data if you have forgotten password. Please use the password key to gain access to these files.

Hello everyone,
I am experiencing some issues with my external hard drive. I've decided to encrypt it using bitlocker. We're talking about a 2TB hard drive. The process started..it requested for a password and i have been provided with a recovery key. At around 90% the
process blocked/stoped. It started to affect my PC performace.
Suddenly, there was no longer a progress bar so that i could see how much i had to wait. I've been requested to provide directly my recovery key( not the password) so that i could unlock the drive . I kindda panicked..and reinstalled the OS.
The sad part, altough i have the original message that i got from the drive when i started to encrypt it with the full recovery key, it says its incorrect.
I've performed several test using CMD and all the avaiable commands i could find on the internet, but with no luck.
Have you managed to to get by from such a scenario?

Regards,
Rudolf Radovici
