I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Dell Axim which is approximately three years old running Microsoft ActiveSync 3.5With the change in daylight savings time, every time I sync, the device reverts back to the old time. My calendar times are really messed up! FYI, the Outlook time on my PC is fine. Does Microsoft have a patch for this? Thanks.

Answer:Microsoft ActiveSync and new Daylight Savings Time

Dumb idea but have you been into the CONTROL PANEL and had a look under REGIONAL SETTINGS that the time zones and other settings are all as they should be?

Having a little trouble getting into the holiday spirit this year? Maybe you just want to get into it even more? As you might be aware, Majorgeeks rarely posts themes because many third party themes can be more trouble than they are worth. Not so with Microsoft themes. Downloading these official themes from Microsoft is just as safe and stable as the default themes included with Windows 7!

Ok I guess there was something wrong with the iso or something like that not to shore. But now that has been fixed I even had to create a new account which I kind of liked I started over from scratch but without losing my files.

So here's the question that I have?
How do I keep using the screen clips as file icons if I use vlc media player as my main media player.

If you look at the image you will see that each file icon is different. But most of the files are mp4. But I know if I download and start using vlc media player the icons will change to the nasty orange cones. I don't want that is there a way around that.

Or is there a way to use just a image for each video rather then doing the whole file type icon thing. I like the preview thing but would like it a bit more cleaned up.

Someone on a anime forum said they use plex but that was from a older post back in April 18th 2015. I'm just trying to clean up and organize my videos and iamges a bit.
Here's a screen shot.

Answer:Microsoft support just fixed my pc a few days ago. Now needing help

Hi, this is what I see with VLC as defaults for avi, divx and mp4 respectively:

divx & flv are only represented with VLC's traffic cone icon. No problem with MP4.
I don't know why, though. However, a program called Icaros (free) resolves this, and supports removal or display of the icon superimposed on the thumbnail.

I?m skeptical ifMicrosoft?s Windows Home Server will be a success story for Microsoft. It is based on Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 but created with simplicity in mind. Many households have more than one computer and Windows Home Server is intended to be of use for those households. It provides remote access, sharing, streaming and storage solutions for home networks.
Some of the key features are simplicity of use, backup capabilities, a single store pool that works without drive letters and content that can be shared with other computers and devices including the Xbox. This can be useful but I personally don?t need a Home Server to do most of these things.
But that is me and others might think different. A good way to see if Windows Home Server is useful for you would be to order a 120 day fully functional trial version from Microsoft. The only catch is that you have to pay money for it. Europeans pay around ?7 which means that users from the United States will probably pay $10 for the package that will be send to your location.
It?s not a bad bargain especially if you think this could be useful for you. One DVD and two CDs will be shipped actually:
Windows Home Server Installation DVD
Windows Home Server Connector CD
Home Computer Restore CD
The requirements for installing Windows Home Server are:
Computer with 1 GHz Pentium III (or equivalent) or faster processor
512 MB of RAM or more
70 GB or larger ATA, SATA, or SCSI hard drive as the primary hard drive and any... Read more

Microsoft Safety Scanner has been running more than   47:14:36 hours.  It has scanned more than 1,265,500 files and has found more than 771 infected files.  It is only partially complete, I would say less than 1/3 complete.  Why is this taking so long.  Also, the number of threats appears to  be very high.
Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Microsoft Safety Scanner is Taking Days to Complete

Stop the scan, then complete these....

Adware Cleaner Scan.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan button.
When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

JRT Scan.
Please download Junkware Removal Tool and save it on your desktop.

Shut down your anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-click it and select Run as administrator.
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
Please post the JRT log.

Adware Removal Tool Scan.

Download Adware removal tool to your desktop, right click the icon and select Run as Administrator.

Hit Ok.

Hit next make sure to leave all items checked, for removal.

Question: Annual PC Checkup

At least Anually the following procedures should be followed
Beginners Guides: Annual PC Checkup Checklist - PCSTATS.com

Answer:Annual PC Checkup

Decent guide, except that it was written 3+ years ago. There are some flaws to it, that can get the average user in trouble like:

Oiling a fluid-bearing fan?
Not using compressed air to clean the fan blades (why not just hold them in place?)
Defragmenting your HD (not a very good idea if you have an SSD(s) installed....

These are only the issues I saw when skimming the article. There is a reason computer kits are not $49.95 at your local radio shack - modern day machines can be expensive beasts, and allowing a novice user to get inside can be a dangerous thing.

Being a tech myself, some of the things I have seen happen:
When trying to clean CPU heatsink/fan combos, ppl have broken one of the mounts, then thought to themselves "Hey, it's still got 3 of them, it should be good." Wrong!
When trying to clean dust bunnies out of the computer, they forget that their computer is in 'sleep / hibernate mode - and it powers on as they accidentally bump the mouse / press a key right when the vacuum cleaner hose is making contact with the mobo....
Power wires get unplugged and then they forget to plug them back in and then you get a system fail (particularly with CPU heatsinks)

You really need to have a basic understanding of the hardware inside your computer before jumping off on this project. Paying $200 for cleaning is outrageous, indeed, I charge ~20% of that, but I'd rather you pay me $40 to do it right after researching your computer than doing it yourself - and t... Read more

Question: Annual checkup

I have had a couple of viruses on this machine and managed to control them with Malwarebytes and ad-aware. I'm not convinced this machine is completly clean. Can you help me mop this up?

Jeff

Answer:Annual checkup

Let's start with Malwarebytes...The process of cleaning your computer may require temporarily disabliling some security programs. If you are using SpyBot Search and Destroy, please refer to Note 2 at the bottom of this page.On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. Question: Annual PC Checkup

Procedure to follow at least once a year
Beginners Guides: Annual PC Checkup Checklist - PCSTATS.com

One caveat that comes to my mind is
Defragmenting your HD (not a very good idea if you have an SSD(s) installed....

Answer:Annual PC Checkup

To be honest, I've never given much thought to maintenance that applies only annually - I've always thought more in terms of general maintenance that typically occurs more frequently. At the moment, I don't personally do anything only on an annual basis and certainly nothing like oiling parts (not because I think it is bad as much as because I simply never considered the idea for myself or for my clients). I'll need to give it more thought and reply once I've had more time to consider it - but I will do so.

My first impression is that it would be best to combine the maintenance, performance enhancement, and space conservation procedures together. We already have a pretty good listing (several in fact - I know we each have a version and there are probably others and I'm sure we can find a way to combine them into one that will satisfy most) and perhaps it would be simpler just to add the appropriate annual chores listed in this article to those lists (as there really aren't that many in the article and some are duplicated) so the subject of maintenance is covered more fully and comprehensively.

One thing I did notice is that it seems more geared to desktop than laptop computers. Some of the steps will be very difficult to say the least to do with a laptop as you would pretty much need to open it up quite a bit and that may be beyond the skills of the average user - and maybe even just a little risky (not necessarily taking it apart as much as putting it properly back toge... Question: Annual Checkup

Hey guys, decided to do a checkup to see what kind of nasties were hiding in my computer.
I ran all the tools fine, except for RootRepeal, which crashed twice, on the second time giving a BSOD. The BSOD lasted a millisecond, it appeared and then disappeared then the computer restarted, so i didn't get what it said.
RootRepeal crashed shortly after looking through the Manifest folder.

Ill attach the rest of the logs for you guys.

Thanks.

Answer:Annual Checkup

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Your logs are clean; however you should uninstall the below old Sun Java versions and install the current version as requested in step 3 of the READ & RUN ME:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 12
Java(TM) 6 Update 22
Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 10

If you are not having any malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
"%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
If running Vista, it is time ... Read more

Once again, my puter is acting up. I ran Adaware and Spypbot S&D, rebooted and did a hijackthis log. Can you please have a gander at it?

Besides running sorta slowly, I'm having trouble today since installing a new CD burner w/ Nero software. It has locked up the computer a couple of times, possibly remnants of the Backpack external CD burner that I'm replacing?

Anyway, thanks so much for your time. Y'all are the greatest!

I have a desktop PC running on Vista Home Edition (32 bit). There are 4 users on it and the only one who ever cleans it up is me. I run Norton 360 but the machine is getting slower and slower on boot up, startup of applications, on IE and just about everything else. I'm fairly sure that I have a number of Trojans, spyware, and malware in the machine. My other 3 family members have this "habit" of clicking "yes" to everything that comes up. I also know that Norton 360 doesn't catch everything. I've edited my registry in the past and am pretty good at removing tough virus, Trojans, etc. So I am good at this, just not knowledgeable. I don't use this computer all that much but the complaints from my wife and kids are requiring me to take action. I clean out the cache, temp files, cookies, etc. and defrag on a very regular basis.
I don't want to download some spyware scanner only to find out I have to purchase their software to remove all the bad things it found on my computer. I suspect that half the things found are installed by the free scans that are supposed to help you.

Anyway, what would be the best path forward (i.e. step 1, step 2, step 3, etc.) to get the machine running  like it does when you first install on operating system? I have a Dell OptiPlex 755 dual-quad processor with 4GB of RAM, plenty of hard free hard drive space 500+ GB. Though not an Intel "I" series it still should be very fast but it's not.

Hi Tech Guys,

I'm not having any serious issues. My computer has been running a little slower lately and I noticed 2 new Search icons in the System Tray. Can you see if there are somethings I can remove to speed things up or that maybe a potential danger.

I ran HijackThis and DDS. Logfiles are below. I tried running Gmer three times but it locked up each time, even when I made sure not to move the mouse.

Answer:Annual Check Up. Possible Search Hook

Hi Stardanz1, my name is Mark and I will be helping you.

There is nothing of any significance in the logs. A slow system is not always related to Malware, please read this: Slow Computer/Browser? Check Here First, It May Not Be Malware

Your system could do with some cleaning up, you have several programs installed in duplicate with both new and old versions on the system. Java, Adobe, and your Internet Explorer are all out of date and you have used an out of date version of HJT.

You also have multiple Anti Spyware programs which can slow system performance and cause conflicts.

I see you have P2P File Sharing Programs installed on your system: UTorrent & LimeWire. As long as you continue to use these types of programs you can expect to get infected. P2P file sharing is one of the most common sources for picking up infections.

There are four search hooks listed but only the Shopping4causes one has anything remotely dubious about it.

I would suggest you start by uninstalling all the duplicate programs and any you do not require any more. Then download and install this WinPatrol install and run the program and under the Startup tab disable any programs that are not required to run at startup.

Then, Download Temporary file cleaner and save it to the desktop.
Double click on the icon to run it (it appears as a dark grey dustbin). For Windows 7 and Vista right click the icon and select Run as Administrator.
When the window opens click on Start. It will close all running p... Read more

Hello. I found this forum by googling my problem. I am running Chome on Windows 7 at work and Windows 8 at home. I have AVG at home and some corporate anti-virus at work. My problem is effecting both home and work laptop. I did not download anything (knowingly, at least) and have not added any extensions. Here is my problem:

Often when clicking a link, I will get a pop-up tab to take a survey or for something to do with a lotto.

I have run:

Adware Cleaner
Malwarebytes
Junk Removal Tool
Yet Another Cleaner
Hitman Pro
SuperAntiSpyware

And after each run, the problem starts again fairly quickly.

This problem started Tuesday evening (8/5/14) or Wednesday evening (8/6/14)

Please help. Thanks

Hi friends,

I have not used Excel for ages apart from basic adding formulas etc.

What I am trying to do is make a set point (date) that turns a box red if one year has passed since the original date entered.
(not sure if I have explained it very well?)

ie
I am making a list of alarms on some machinery & want to show that the alarms have been tested within the past 12 months.
If I do not get around to testing, I would like the relevant field to change colour, so that a simple check upon opening the spreadsheet will tell me what is overdue on testing.(eventually there will be a lot of different alarms within the spreadsheet)
I am not sure if it will be easier to make an "issue date" then another field for "review date" or just have the one field that will turn red if today's date passes 365 from the last test date? (is that possible?)

I am sure it is easy - unfortunately, not for me!

keep the faith

Rob

Answer:Excel formula for annual reminders

You need to apply conditional formatting to the cell you want to change colour.

Condition is the formula type. Formula is

=today()>=(yourissuedatecell+365)

In the formatting, select fill colour to suit and any special borders / font formatting. Hit apply.

You can change the range affected by the formatting, but you might need to lock the column / row, depending on what you're trying to do.

No need for a due date field

As instructed when I replied here http://malwaretips.com/threads/ads-still-persist-even-after-removal.48727/page-5#post-420902 i am starting a new thread.

I have done everything in the above mentioned thread with the exception of the last couple steps (the ones that worked) and want to know , should I take the last couple steps in my case?

These things have gotten so hard to get rid of, I got rid of them myself for years and years but now, none of the anti virus anti malware spyware stuff works.

Cheers!

My Notebook has been under warranty for 3 years. Now it is going to expire at the end of this month.I want to extend it further. But when I called HP sales, they said warranty can not be extended for more than three years. And that I have to go for an AMC.  Is it the rules here at HP?

Greetings, malwaretips.

As noted in "Infection date and initial symptoms" and "Current issues and symptoms", I have experienced two redirects to Chrome's supposed Annual Visitor Survey 2016 on websites where such redirects or pop-ups have never occurred to me before.
The redirect seems to go through a good dozen of websites which you don't even notice unless you right-click the "back" button. At least some are listed in Chrome's history though:
I've run Adwcleaner twice but nothing outstanding was detected.
Malwarebytes is up-to-date but never detects anything.
HitmanPro detected mostly tracking cookies and something about delta-search that was quickly resolved by removing it with "manage search engines" in the Chrome settings.
The Chrome Cleanup Tool didn't detect anything either.

An FRST log file has been attached to this post. Maybe one of the qualified members manages to find anything suspicious. I encountered an error when trying to upload the Addition.txt, so let me know if you need that one and I'll try again in a reply.

Thank you in advance.

Has anyone renewed their annual virus subscription for virus definitions lately?? I have Nortons Internet Security with NAV2002 and Symantec's site is almost impossible to pose this question. And even then, only through an email! I think I will get a faster and probably more complete and understandable answer on our board from someone!!
I bought NIS2003 with the NAV but never installed it because I read that some people were having difficulties with the NAV in that version. As usual, TIA.

Just called to have a T400 Power brick sent to me, the machine is still under warranty so it was at no cost to me. I seem to be going at the steady rate of consuming 1 power brick per year, and I was wondering if this is normal for other heavily mobile users. I use my machine for school, and I bring the brick with me when I travel to campus, so the brick gets plugged, unplugged, and wrapped up and shoved into a bag about ten or more times per week. The first one simply stopped working after about a year. The second also survived for about a year and it seems like there is a loose connection on the side of the brick that connects to the laptop. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar issues? Can anyone recommend a way to treat the brick more gently so that I can make one last more than a year?

Answer:T400 Power Brick needs annual replacement under heavy mobile use?

This doesn't sound normal. I toted my T400 adapter around high school and a half of first-year on it's original adapter. The adapter still works. (Maybe because I put the Intel Core 2 inside sticker on it? )I think if your wall power has unstable current or voltage, it may wear out the adapter faster.

Hi there

Firstly apologies for the title it should have read:-

Do you still buy annual renewable, or lifetime security software, or rely on freeware?

I am very interested in hearing about what you think regarding this My own preference is to use freeware first, then buy a lifetime option whenever possible!

For example, I like VoodooShield - Currently I am using the freeware version. If they offered lifetime licenses at a fair price, I would have already purchased for sure! I am waiting to see if they do sometime this year. If they don't then I may well buy the lifetime license from NoVirusThanks ERP as it also is a good whitelister and probably continue to use the freeware VoodooShield.

I very rarely buy annual renewable licenses anymore, as many Companies now offer lifetime options re purchasing. Furthermore there are many unlimited 6 month/12 month and longer Giveaways for security software. I do think software creators not having a lifetime option for their apps, may mean that they will lose business to competitors offering similar deals with a lifetime alternative!

I always like to trial the freeware option first for any software, or maybe 30 day trials, etc. If I like the app, then I will buy a lifetime option when available, as I feel that this supports the developer. I also like to leave constructive positive reviews when applicable on different web sites, as this again adds further support for the product.

Perhaps some developers may feel that when a lifet... Read more

I used to buy a yearly security licence each year, but I must admit just lately I have been using some of the software from the awesome giveaways here at MalwareTips.

Ars Technica article here.

IBM Internet Security System's X-Force has released its annual report (PDF) on malware trends and statistics from last year. 2007 saw some significant changes in malware distribution, and there's reason to think that some of these shifts mark the beginning of new attack patterns rather than small abnormalities. The following are some of the highlights from the report:

* Reported vulnerabilities in 2007 were down five percent compared to 2006, but the number of those vulnerabilities that were classified as severe rose by 28 percent.
* Microsoft, Apple, Oracle, IBM, and Cisco reported the most vulnerabilities, but collectively account for only 13.6 percent of all reported vulnerabilities.
* 90 percent of the 2007 vulnerabilities were exploitable from a remote location, up 1 percent from 2006
* Most in-the-wild exploits are being generated by web toolkits. Prevalence of these toolkits has risen dramatically since they appeared in 2006.

As of this writing, 80 percent of the 838 vulnerabilities attributed to the top five vendors have been patched. That leaves 20 percent of the flaws unpatched, which is obviously non-ideal, but it beats the 50/50 patched/unpatched ratio attributed to the other vendors once Microsoft, Apple, Oracle, IBM, and Cisco are removed from the picture.

Hi,

I am requesting help again. I am taking a bit of a different approach. While it will be declined, I will pay for the fix from an established member, if not declined you got it.

Fresh install of Windows 10 which upgraded me to build 1709 (11/2/2017).
5-8 months ago problems with disk usage spiking to 100%. Resources being "Hijacked"/stolen or lost(task manager). This has been an issue with many since Win 8. I've tried EVERY recommended fix. 3 people on MSTECHNET/MS Community said this spiking to 100% resource usage could be the cause of the other errors. Is there an out of the box fix?

Picture is less than .1% of the errors. Image is just there as "proof of problem" not really for diagnostics in my mind. Also keep in mind event viewer was slammed with absurd amounts of errors prior to this fresh install (Weeks/Months ago). And the first week after the install (5-8ish months ago). This is a home PC, nothing special.

What I have done. Hardware passes EVERYTIME:
Checked Maleware with forums (Bleeping/Malewarebytes)
CPUID: HWmonitor and Core Temp (Temps & Voltage PASS)
Lifeguard WesternDigital's Hard Drive Diagnose (Pass); Tried HD Test program recommended here (Passed)
MEMTEST & other "Passmark" diagnostic programs (Pass)
Windows Maintance/Trouble Shooting (No Issues Found)

Sometimes when I boot the W520, the access connections tray icong thing is greyed out, sometimes its brightly coloured and shows the current connection. E.g. at home I ahve a wired connection called home, whith my home printer set as default. At work I ahve a wired connection with a different printer (and a different IP range). The days when its greyed out, if I lauch the access connections dialogue (which take an ridiculously long time - what is it doing?), there are no locations profiles, even though I have about 20. On the days when its working, I see a whole load of location profiles, and It choses the right printer and shows the right location profile name in the tray icon. Its about 50%/50%, but seems to be getting worse. sleeping and waking dont affect it - it stays dead or alive. Occasionally it crashes (as do all the lenovo apps) Anyone else had this? Any work arounds? I have done a lenovo update, and its at version 5.85. Simon.

Answer:Access connnections works some days, is dead other days (W520)

I'd not use Access Connections if you don't need it..NET programs are a bit of a drag.

As far as I can tell, there is no way to suppress the Zero using that Custom Format. You could probably process the data and remove the Zero but you will need either a formula or VBA.Is this the result of a calculation?MIKEhttp://www.skeptic.com/

hey guys, i came across this a little while ago: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/875-activation-trial-period-extend-up-120-days.html it says if i run that command Windows7 evaluation period will be extended by 30 days each time it's done. however, when i do it it only extends for 3 days. is there any way to make it last longer or has it changed?

thanks

Answer:Extending Evaluation Period for 120 days.. only extends for 3 days?

If you have a valid copy of windows 7 with a legit COA sticker and can activate it without problems i dont see any need to even have an evaluation period. If your copy of windows 7 isnt valid and the COA sticker isnt anygood id suggest you buy a proper copy of windows 7 with a legit COA sticker and go from there.Because eventually it wont work anymore and you will be locked out of the computer.

Dear Tech Guy/s
I work in veterinary practice.
I want to apply 6-monthly price increases across-the-board based on the annual inflation rate for the preceding 12 months.

Can you help with the formula I need to construct?

i.e. where

C = current price
N = new price at 6 months = current price + percentage increase required
I = Known Inflation figure for the preceding 12 months (percentage)

Cheers
quickvet7

Answer:Formula for applying 6-monthly price increases based on annual inflation rates

if you just want to increase by the inflation percentage then

depending on how the percent is formatted
say inflation was 2.3%
is the cell 2.3 formatted as a percent
or 0.023
or just as 2.3 in a cell
you need it to be a % so 0.023
and therefore may need to divide by 100
N = C * (1+ I )
OR

N = C* (1 + ( I/100 ))

in the example N = C * 1.023

As I understand it, with the new anniversary update after 10 days one will get disk space back relating to Windows.old being deleted automatically (if PC is left idle for a while).

i also believe that if a PC upgrades to Windows 10 then the new anniversary update wouldn't be offered until 30 days have elapsed. However with the aforementioned change to 10 days for rolling back the anniversary update I wonder if that now also rings true for previous 10586/TH2 build? We got a new mini PC approx 10 days ago, Windows 10 was pre installed but it was a really old build, pre 10586/TH2. I checked for updates and it immediately set about updating to last novembers 10586. However I am now confused as to whether I need to wait 10 days or 30 days for Windows update to offer it the new Anniversary update. I am totally happy to wait for Windows update to do its thing rather than use MCT etc, just curious about the timescales involved given MS has changed from 30 to 10 on the latest version

So, in the last 48 hrs. I have received 4 different phone calls, from a "Microsoft security rep". Two of the four calls were based out of Eau Claire, WI - and the other 2 were just random phone numbers that contained too many digits to be a real phone #. I called backed the WI phone # and I reached some guy named "Mike" and left a voice mail, because I wanted to let him know that someone is spoofing his phone #...

These people call me claiming that they are calling from MS and want me to go into my computer and enter some type of command by holding down the windows key & with other letter combinations (with a heavy accent from either India or Pakistan). Obviously, I am not stupid and know that these guys are full of $hit. So, I play along pretending that I am doing what they tell me to do to my computer. Then I tell them someone is at my door, leaving them on hold until they hang up out of frustration (one guy even cussed me out because I called him on his BS).

I would like to report this to Microsoft, however they do not make it easy to contact a real person who could actually do something about this - I tried...

Answer:4 Phone calls in the last 2 days from "Microsoft"

Dam scammers, usually they get you to look for errors on you PC which naturally occur and correct themselves, but they want you to think they are serious and they want remote access to your PC to "fix" them for you and they also want your credit card details to charge you a lot of money for fixing something that ain't broke.

It upsets me, people like me or you know they are scammers, but sadly some poor folk fall for it and get ripped off.

A friend dropped in with a memory card full of holiday video clips as asked me if I could make a complete thing of it, and I agreed little knowing the problems involved as I have no movie authoring software or experience. The clips are in MPEG-4 and I have nothing which will accept it. I have converted the clips to WMV (with a huge loss of quality), put together some sort of movie using WinMovieMaker which is now on my desktop as a WMV file. I was hoping to make a SVCD but my version of NERO won't accept that, only VCD (with a further loss of quality I expect).OK, I am very much in the dark with regard to this never having used a camcorder so can anyone recommend where I make a restart?Maybe suggest a good software which I can download and use just for a trial period as this is likely to be a "one off".As always, thanks in advance :-)

Answer:Make a holiday CD/DVD?

if you convert to avi and then import to WMM you can the export them as dv-avi. WMV has various quality settings perhaps you just used the default Then you could burn to dvd with nero .Alternatly if you just want them as they are then try dvd flick its freeclick herejust load them as they are and burn to dvd

I have been trying to remove the "Instant Savings App" from my Chrome Browser Extensions with a tremendous amount of difficulty, and without success.

I have uninstalled it via the windows7 Programs and features tab, removed a duplicate copy from Chrome Extensions (how I got a duplicate copy I do not know), removed from Firefox (which I have reverted back to) but have not used this for at least 12 months, searched with what I know from the registry, checked through the various folders for the program, installed the latest Malwarebytes program and ran a full scan, removed whatever file that was recommended, ran CCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool utility.

OK, so this is what I have got: I found that I could NOT remove the duplicated Instant Savings App from the extensions in Google Chrome. There is NO Rubbish Bin icon to do this. I discovered also the app showed it was managed by a company and could not be removed! I sent a message to Google but I do not expect to get a reply, something I'm afraid they are not good at.

What pissed me off was whenever I did a search with Google search, as I read down all of a sudden this App would appear at the top of the page displaying say three further options a prices??? and push the remaining options I was reading down the page. Bloody annoying, and I really have no idea how the App got there in the first place, or when.

Question: Allday Savings

Hey, I need help trying to get rid of the malware or virus from allday savings. I've all ready done the FRST and addition logs

Answer:Allday Savings

Hello John

It is not my intent to repeatedly remove malware from the same member's machines. The intent of this free service is to help remove malware from your machine, educate you on how it may have happened, and how to prevent that from happening again. I am doing this the last time for you.

Fix with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

This fix was created for this user for use on that particular machine.
Running it on another one may cause damage and render the system unstable.
Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop:

Both files, FRST and fixlist.txt have to be in the same location or the fix will not work!
Right-click on icon and select Run as Administrator to start the tool.
(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
Press the Fix button just once and wait.
If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop, called Fixlog.txt.

Please attach it to your reply.

Fix with AdwCleaner

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save the file to your desktop.
Right-click on icon and select Run as Administrator to start the tool.
Follow the prompts and click Scan.
When finished, please click Clean.
Upon completion, click Report. A log (AdwCleaner[S*].txt) will open.

Please include the contents of that file in your reply.

Question: Holiday Video

Hi
I was wondering if someone can help me, two years ago I had a holiday in America and since then I have had the video on my laptop problem is the folder is 44.8 Gb and I am not sure the best way to burn it to disc and how to go about burning something this size, I would imagine it would have to be onto quite a few discs also what is the best software to buy to do a quality job.

In each folder there are x amount of files all with numbers, for example. 20111126004141_cpi this number is then duplicated but with a avchd at the side of the number, the cpi file is only 1 Kb but the avchd is obviously the video file itself which could be 64,210 Kb in size varies with each individual avchd but just to confuse the issue a bit more some of the files also have scn against the number, first question is if and when I can burn these files would I just drag and insert the avchd file into the software (that you guys may recommend) and ignore the cpi & scn files.

Second question, how many discs do you believe I would have to burn to cover potentially 44 Gb, at the moment on my laptop I have a software program called Pinnacle Studio 11, I think this is an old version and also I started to move some of the files into this software a few months ago but I made a mistake and now when I try and delete my past attempt it will not let me create a new timeline.

Question: Excel holiday

Hi all,I am trying to make a staff holiday register.I have it set so that if an "H" or "1/2H" is entered the box turns green. Easy so far. What I am looking for is a formula which will count every "H" as a 1 and every "1/2H" as a 1/2 or .5 so that for that month it will total all the "H" or "1/2H" entries. This will then allow me to deduct the total from the annual 25 days holiday allowance. Can it be done or should I go about it another way.......?

Answer:Excel holiday

Hey,An idea I had; use custom cell formatting to make it display as '1.0 H' or '1.5 H' while keeping the actual cell value as just '1' or '1.5'. This would then allow you to make a total, and subtract that total from 25.Try right clicking on the cell then Format Cells>Number tab>Custom, and then paste "0.0 \H" in the text box.You can still use conditional formatting to turn the cells with '1.0' or '1.5' green.brent85.

Well I have some money I can spend and I was wondering what the very least expensive stuff is of "the best" so it may still be a little pricey. More specifically I wanted to know about great digital cameras and printers. The Printers I am interested in not to big, and are the "All-in-One" with a copier, printer, scanner. And the cameras I am interested in are alot like this one (except hopefully there are very similar ones that are not as pricey):

Above is the link to the camera type that appeals to me, just hope there is soemthing a little less expensive.

If you want a relly good camera, you could RULE with the Canon Digital EOS Rebel, that is a little pricey though, but worth more than you pay. If you don't want to empty your wallet on that, then get Canon A60 A70 A75 A80 A85 A90 A95, whatever your buget is.

I have in the last few days inadvertently downloaded this pop-up adware (All Day savings adware). It does not appear in the program list to uninstall. I have however noticed that I have a duplicated file, the latest one being dated in the last few days and is slightly larger than the original.
Microsoft visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x64 9.0.30729.17 - original date 14/03/2012 - size 600kb
Microsoft visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x64 9.0.30729.17 - new date 22/08/2014 - size 788kb
I guess it would not be as simple as deleting the latest file.
Is there a cleaner I can use to remove or will it have to be manual.
I am not too technical but not too dumb either.
Thank you.

As title, going on holiday at the weekend, my GF's brother will be staying in our flat.

I'm going to setup the guest account on my PC so that he can use that and make my documents private so that he can't access them.

Is there anything else I can do so that I don't come home to a machine full of Itunes, Quicktime and anything else he can install?

TIA.

p.s. OS is MCE 2005.

Answer:Going on holiday, how do I secure my PC

physical access to the system is all that's required to pwn it. If he's not too tech savey, then you've done all that is really necessary. Removing access to IE might be an additional safeguard.

Question: Supreme Savings

[attachment=3912]

[attachment=3911]
Hi,

I am having problems removing Supreme Savings from my computer.

As per this blog post http://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-supreme-savings/ , I have run AdwCleaner, Malwarebytes and HitmanPro. However, the chrome extension for Supreme Savings is still in my extension list (with no option to disable or remove to trash). So, as suggested in the comments section of the above blog post, I have run the avast! Browser Cleanup. This also has not worked. I have also uninstalled chrome and reinstalled it, but the extension is still there.

When it came to uninstalling Supreme Savings through the control panel, I received a message saying that the program cannot be found, and asked me if I should remove the program name from the list. I stupidly said yes, and now supreme savings is not on my programme list in the control panel. When I search for it on my system, I cannot find it either. I have read that it comes under a number of different names, including Excellent apps and 215 Apps, but neither of these names appear to be on my system either.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Anthony

Answer:Supreme Savings

Hi and welcome to MalwareTips!

I'm Fiery and I would gladly assist you in removing the malware on your computer.

Before we start:

Note that the removal process is not immediate. Depending on the severity of your infection, it could take a long time.
Malware removal can be dangerous. I cannot guarantee the safety of your system as malware can be unpredictable. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system. Therefore, I would advise you to backup all your important files before we start.
Please be patient and stay with me until I give you the green lights and inform you that your PC is clean.
Some tools may be flagged by your antivirus as harmful. Rest assure that ALL the tools we use are safe, the detections are false positives.
The absence of symptoms does not mean your PC is fully disinfected.
If you are unclear about the instructions, please stop and ask. Following the steps in the order that I post them in is vital.
Lastly, if you have requested help on other sites, that will delay and hinder the removal process. Please only stick to one site.

To begin, Goto Start > Control Panel > uninstall a program. Uninstall the follow:

Question: Savings pictures

When saving pictures online or copying, pasting from Word, Excel, my machine is all of a sudden saving in this .png file format, instead of .jpg like it used to. How do I eliminate .png from my computer's knowledge?

Answer:Savings pictures

Please view this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PNG as it explains what the .png file extension is. As for changing the association, just right click on one of the file types that the extension is opening, you should see a menu that includes "open with", and choose the program that you want to open these files. Hope this helps!

My daughter installed The Sims On Holiday expansion pack, however it won't run. When you run the program from the cd rom menu, you select the graphic definition but then there's an error message saying insert correct cd rom.

We have sims delux installed and the laptop is only 6 months old so there's no probs there.

Any ideas anyone?

Answer:Sims on holiday won't run

It has suddenly occured to me that she was trying to run it with the expansion pack cd rom in. Should she have the sims orig cd rom in. She can't as she appears to have lost that!!

Question: Holiday Security

What precautions do you take when you go on holiday for a couple of weeks? We all must do our best to ensure our sensitive data is protected.I am going to Corfu tomorrow (5.30am) And have locked down as far as I can my computer.I would be interseted to know how others protect their data.(Laptop, attached by security wire)what about software entry?

Answer:Holiday Security

Anything that could be described as sensitive is within a Truecrypt container with a long passphrase. Anyone can steal my desktops or laptops and my data is as secure as I can make it.

Kind of curious why my clock on my computer is changing its time according to European Union time. I have it set to United States and Eastern Standard time. Only reason I knew it is stating EU is because I saw this page. Daylight Savings
Anyone know why my clock would be saying this? I even tried updating it thru windows.com and time.nist.gov update button.

You are running the wrong version of The Sims 2. Please run The Sims 2 Pets instead.

Hi all,
I keep getting this message when I'm trying to install my new game "The Sims 2 Holiday Edition." I currently have University, Nightlife, Open for Business & Pets. I've tried manually clicking run from the Start menu, like it says in my book to do, and I still get the same error. Can anybody help me?

Oh, I am not really good with computers, but am trying to learn. How do I find what kind of Windows I have? I know it says XP when it starts, so maybe that helps. My hubby bought me a new video card and lots and lots of memory recently, so I don't think those are the problems.

Thanks

Iris
