Lenovo P50 - HDMI External Monitor Not Working After Sleep (My Other Laptop of the Same Kind does)

Question: Lenovo P50 - HDMI External Monitor Not Working After Sleep (My Other Laptop of the Same Kind does)

Hello I have been fighting issues with my external monitor not turning back on after sleep. I have it set to hybrid mode, I understand the other fix is to set it to discrete mode but my other laptop of the same type does wake up after moving the mouse in hybrid mode. I tried multiple things. 1.) Updated Intel Management Drivers and Software 2.) Updated Thunderbolt Software 3.) Used Graphic Driver Uninstaller and to no avail. I also installed every update for Windows 10 on their web site. The other fix is to enable and disable the NVIDIA driver in the and that wakes up the HDMI port it seems, but that should not be the case, I would like it to just turn on with the flick of the mouse or button like my other laptop. Is it a failing graphic card of Nvidia or Intels end? I do notice after the monitor sleeps the NVIDIA drivers control panel settings go missing. I already uninstalled completely and reinstalled the drivers but my computer is still having this problem. Are their any suggestions on Lenovo's end or fixes? I bought this laptop from Amazon and I also joined a 3 year support service from them.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lenovo P50 - HDMI External Monitor Not Working After Sleep (My Other Laptop of the Same Kind does)

Have you compared the Power Option settings on the two laptops to see if they match as well?Do the two systems share the same monitor, and if not, how is your monitor configured, does it have an option to set the input source to HDMI vs. automatically detecting the source? When in the mode where the screen does not turn back on, what happens if you press the following key combination Windows Key + Shift + Ctrl + B (forces a reset of graphics cards) do you hear a beep and your screen wake up? That key combination sometimes works to wake the monitors, and while not a solution, it may be a work around until you find a permanent one. Best of luck,

I was having sleep problems and after messing around with different settings and configurations I finally found the problem. If I have an external monitor plugged into my laptop via HDMI the computer refuses to go to sleep. As soon as I tell it to go to sleep it will immediately wake up after a few seconds. I also have an type-c to VGA adapter that does not have this problem so its not a general external monitor issue its only with the HDMI port.

Hi everyone,i have a B570 laptop,i recently tried to connect the HDMI cable between my laptop and an external monitor and no display on the monitor appeard, however when i tried the VGA output and there was a display.I tried another laptop the Lenovo g580 and it connected no problem. There is nothing wron with the cable or monitor which leads me to think my HDMI port if defective? or do i have to change some settings before i can fix it? Please help. Thanks

Answer:Lenovo B570,no HDMI output on external monitor

you should not have to change any settings, unless you changed something prior. My b570 works great with the hdmi, I run a 19" tv for a second monitor and it has a great display, just seems to trash the battery.

I have a Lenovo G50 running Win8 32bit. I have two external monitors both Asus with VGA ports. I successfully configured one of the monitors to the VGA port. However I have not been able to successfully get my 2nd external monitor connected using the HDMI port. I have a VGA to HDMI adapter for the monitor but it's not working. To rule out any issue with the 2nd monitor, I was able to get it to work by disconnecting the VGA cable from the first monitor and connecting it to the 2nd monitor. But again, no luck using the HDMI port with a VGA to HDMI adapter. So I'm fresh out of ideas. Had anyone been able to resolve this successfully with this setup? And if so, how? Thanks in advance! Leslie

Hello.I have the following problem when connecting an external monitor to my Lenovo g510: The monitor does not go to stand by when it should (the turn off display after X time setting in Windows).I updated all the drivers from Lenovo site. I found some beta drivers for my video card HD4600 on the Intel site but I could not install them(i recieve an error that the computer does not support the driver and I should contact the pc manufacturer). When the monitor should sleep/go to stand by it goes black like a screensaver instead and the backlight remains on(the screensaver is off). There is no problem with the monitor or the cable because it works well on a Toshiba satellite that runs an ATI hd 4650 What should I do because I use the external monitor very often ? My system specs:Windows 7 Ultimate x64Processor: Intel i3 4000mVideo: intel hd 4600 + Ati HD 8750

I have a HP Spectre 13 Ultrabook (Model No. F5C93EA#ABU) originally shipped with Windows 8.1 64 bit.About 2 months ago it was updated to Windows 10 64-bit with no great problems (update in place).Recently I observed that the external HDMI port no longer works when trying to connect to a TV. I have since tested many combinations of external monitors and cables together with other laptops and proved the problem is with this laptop, We have updated windows 10 to the latest aniversary update to attempt to fix the problem and have also uninstalled and reinstalled the Intel Gaphics Driver which is currently at version 10.18.15.4248. This the latest driver is as posted at the HP website and tends to the be the version that is also automatically installed via windows update.  I notice that actual baseline release date of 10.18.15.4248 is August last year. Intel have many later non-OEM versions but this is the latest HP OEM version. I am at a loss on how to fix the problem and have had to resort to a plugabble USB3 to HDMI adapter to provide external monitor support.

I have a U400 laptop that is not working with an external PC monitor through HDMI.  Note that I have no problem connecting to a TV monitor using HDMI. The problem is only with a PC monitor through HDMI. The laptop connects to the same monitor without problems using VGA [using a USB 3.0 - VGA adapter], but that is not good enough.   Under device manager, I see that my laptop came with 2 display drivers: AMD Radeon. HD 6470M and Intel HD Graphic Family. The drivers are updated.  Any idea what is going on here? Please advise.  Thank you.  Sid

I recently purchased the E93z and am trying to hook up an external monitor.  According to the manual, if I have a HDMI monitor, which I bought purposely for this, that all I need to do is hook the monitor up to the HDMI out port on the Ez93. I have tried this and it does not work. The monitor is recognized on the computer (says generic), but the screen on the external monitor shows squiggly lines and continuously moves.  Any help and/or feedback would be appreciated as I'm having a problem getting through Lenovo's phone support center for help and their online chat reps are unable to help.  All I am wanting to find out is how to add an HDMI/VGA monitor to the ThinkCentre 93z. Thank you in advance. Missy

My neighbour has a Fujitsu Amilo Si2536 laptop running Vista HP.. all drivers are up-to-date and it is clean of viruses and spyware.

When he connects his Sony LCD TV/ Monitor via the HDMI port the laptop screen goes black and nothing appears on the monitor.

Toggling Fn+F10 has no effect.

The laptop had the latest Fujitsu driver installed.

Before I updated the graphics drivers for him it was necessary to boot into safe mode before rebooting normally to get the laptop screen showing the desktop again..

I updated the driver withe the latest Intel chipset driver - now the laptop display returns normally on unplugging the external monitor but it still doesn't work.

Any ideas welcome.

Check the BIOS. Some laptops have a setting where you can determine what happens when you toggle from the built-in display to an external display.

I am a bit clueless as to why it would work with the tv and not the monitor also my brothers laptop (which has Ubuntu) does successfully connect to the monitor.

Hello Community, I am looking for your assistance regarding a topic with the external display I am currently using. I am running a Windows 10 on my laptop and after an update of the nVidia drivers - I have an issue with the signal going through the HDMI cable. While the External display is plugged in - it is using the Intel Integrated. I have came across a similar topic in here:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Z50-70-HDMI-not-working-when-connecting-... And I have done almost everything except the "RESTART" option. I have checked the HDMI cable and it is High speed - and yes, I am sure - the issue first appeared when I updated the drivers. Now I have reverted to older version of the drivers but still experience the issue.

I'm trying to connect a laptop to an external monitor using an HDMI to DVI-I cable adapter.
I first used a Gateway FPD1760. Windows did recognise it but when I used Windowskey+P the monitor stayed in standby mode, even when I chose to extend the displays. The external monitor was there, it just wasn't displaying anything. I then installed a few updates [sliverlight, security essentials and Intel HD3000 update] and lo and behold the monitor came to life and all was well.

After a restart however the monitor again refused to display. In the Intel gfx properties the monitor is recognised as a secondary display. I've tried another Compaq 7020 but that's the same. They both work using the VGA port.

I've tried the function keys like LCD and the change monitor ones but that either changes the built-in monitor's resolution [to the screen ratio of what the external should be 4:3] or it just goes blank. Again the external just stays in standby.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Laptop HDMI to DVI-I external monitor - no signal

Did you try setting the external monitor's resolution to something smaller? might be that its too big for the screen, for some odd reason.

Does HDMI needed to be unplugged and plug back in for it to broadcast a signal from Laptop to an external monitor? Because this seems to be my case at times.

Answer:Laptop connecting to an external Monitor via HDMI

It shouldn't. Does the problem occur during bootup, or while in use?

Also, if it occurs after letting the PC sleep or hibernation, it could be a hardware or OS/software issue.

Hello, it's me again. First I have to say that I would never buy this laptop again, because of all the other issues befor that, but what can we do now. So, I had to upgrade to Win10, because of all GP at work and security issues, so i've found out that my HDMI port is not working like it should be working. i have it connected to second monitor with VGA cable through HDMI to VGA adapter off course. I tested it with other laptop,it works perfectly, so the signal is going through. I also tried to disable and uninstal both of nvidia and intel graphic drivers. But still my second monitor is not recognized and cannot be identified. what else can we do? Help would be very much appreciated, Miha.

I upgraded to Windows 10 last week and everything was smooth.  Today when rebooting my system, the unit no longer can see my external display.  I have tried multiple other displays and none seem to work.  I have the latest video drivers for Win10 from the support site installed but it still doesn't work.  Any thoughts?

Answer:Yoga 2 Pro + Windows 10 = External Monitor not working via micro HDMI

I experienced the same - and also inconsistently that the system is going sluggish/lagging heavily. To fix problem with HDMI downgrade to drivers for Win8.1 - it works but hopefully Lenovo will fix this issue with Win10 drivers!? Overall upgrading to Win10 has been a bad experience (regarding the lagging of the system which usually occurs after 20-30 min after logging on). I've tried removing all third-party startup programs (including Lenovos) - but to no help. The frustration is increasing - any tips will be appreciated :-)

There were a lot of very old posts on this topic but no fresh ones, and hardware and software have moved on.  But the problem remains! So I am starting a new thread for a current solution. Trying to connect new ASUS monitor to my HP Envy laptop using Windows 10. I can use an adapter off a USB port into the monitor's VGA input, but I would like to do HDMI to HDMI (Monitor has HDMI input, Computer has only HDMI, no other outputs except USB.) When I try to do this (of course monitor then is set for HDMI input), the computer does not discover the monitor. It also does not see the speakers in the audio settings. What should I do?

Answer:HP Envy laptop does not recognize external monitor in HDMI-H...

Check the device manager under display adapters. Sometimes on a Windows 10 update you get Microsoft Basic which will not activate the HDMI port and you need to get the correct driver for the video. It would also help if we had the full model number or Product Number.

Why do I lose audio after plugging in an HDMI external monitor to the laptop?  When I unplug the HDMI monitor the sound comes back to the laptop.  I have a Inspiron 13 5378.

Answer:Why do I lose audio after plugging in an HDMI external monitor to the laptop?

Because HDMI is capable of carrying audio, so in case you plugged your system into a TV or receiver, it defaults to sending audio out of the HDMI port.  If you wish to override this, while you have a display connected, go to Control Panel > Sound, right-click your regular speakers in the list, and click the "Set default" button.  You may need to close and relaunch any open applications for them to start using your regular speakers at that point.

Hello all,
I have a question about my laptop (Dell Latitude 7480). My laptop randomly freezes after starting the laptop. It takes around 1-5 minutes to freeze, and I can't do anything about it. After a while, I found out that if I'm not plugging the laptop to an external monitor through the HDMI cable, it will cause this happen, but if i plugged it in, it works perfectly fine.
Has anyone facing this issues and fixed it in the past?. This issue is really annoyed me very much because I cannot work without an external monitor.
My guess is that something happened with my graphic card? Do I need to change the laptop or is there any other way to fix it?

Thank you very much for your answer, very appreciated.

Answer:Laptop freezes when not plugged in with HDMI cable to external monitor

Hi jarukit.p,
Thanks for posting.
Apologies that your system is not working as you expected.  From the description you posted, the issue could be the LCD panel.  If the system is working with an external monitor, then the GPU is not usually suspected as being faulty.
Have you run a systems diagnostics test?  You can do this by pressing F12 at startup or using Support Assist.  Run the diagnostics, make a note of any error messages, then contact Tech Support for further troubleshooting and possible resolution. You can contact Tech Support at 1-800-624-9896  or 1-800-288-4410, or you can initiate a chat session http://dell.to/2v4snVm

Hello all,

I've set my external monitor as primary because the laptop screen is broken, via Q&A: How do I make an external monitor my laptop's primary display?.

However, when waking from Sleep the primary display is switched to the broken laptop screen instead of the external. If I hit Window+P on my external wireless keyboard, I am able to select the external monitor and then it will come on, most of the time.

Is there a way to set the external monitor as the primary after sleeping? Perhaps a third-party program or registry tweak? I've googled around and searched this forum, but have not had much luck. All drivers are up-to-date

I found this forum post which looks promising, but not sure if the solution proposed is applicable to my case.

Thank you.

Hi,

I've recently purchased a Samsung T23A750 monitor and to my disappointment when I try to watch a movie the built in speakers are not functioning. I have a Sony Vaio Z216GX connected via HDMI to the monitor (HDMI-DVI) port. I can definitely see the video, but no audio is playing from the speakers. The built in speakers are not at fault- I did a self-diagnosis of the monitor and the speakers seem to work fine. I also set the monitor as the default for the audio and even when Win 7 says its functioning properly, the speakers still don't work. Conversely, setting the default to my PC speakers work fine. I'm sure its not the HDMI cable- I used the same one to hook my pc to my tv with everything working fine. Any ideas??

My Lenovo X61t Tablet was working fine with an external Samsung SyncMaster 226BW monitor. One day, the external monitor stopped displaying anything with the X61t. The screen just displays "Check signal cable". The monitor works fine with a different laptop. I have tried everything, and searching on the web, I have found lots of people reporting the same problem. And it is not limited to just X61 tablets, but lots of other Lenovo models as well like the T Series. Though I have seen reports of lots of people facing this problem, I have not seen any solutions from any users or anyone from Lenovo. The problem is not new either. Some of the posts are as old as 2008.Some frustrated users have suggested that it is a Lenovo manufacturing defect. If that is the case, it is across several models and series. Surely, someone at Lenovo should be able to throw some light on this problem, and suggest a solution or workaround. If Lenovo has not figured out the cause of the problem, then the problem is probably present in the new models too, making it dicey to buy any of the newer models coming out. Thanks.

Hi - Using IBM T42 with External Monitor. When booting Win XP Home SP3, both monitors work, then laptop monitor goes blank. External monitor works fine. I have tried everything I can think of - resetting displays, changing ATI Radeon mobility 7500 driver, disconnecting external monitor, Function key combinations, booting in safe mode. Nothing works. But when the laptop boot starts, the laptop monitor works for a few minutes then shuts down. Seems like a switch is not working properly.
Any ideas as to how to solve this problem. And the laptop monitor was working fine until a few days ago, the last time I used it alone, i.e., separate from the external monitor.

Many thanks in advance.

Answer:Laptop Monitor Not Working External Fine

Being that the ibm t42thinkpad is an older model its very possible that the whole screen will need replaced as the ribbon cable, inverters, or backlights might have gone bad.replacing the whole screen might be easier to do than trying to find the individual parts needed.

Hello,

Yesterday my new laptop arrived, Windows 7 (64-Bit) pre-installed, I've downloaded all the updates; there are no other issues with this computer.

The only problem I'm having has to do with the external monitor; it's a IBM (6332) E74 monitor. Windows 7 detects and correctly names the external monitor E74, but the monitor just flashes no signal. I also located and downloaded the the IBM E74 drivers .zip file, but Windows 7 , says it is already using the latest drivers and ignores them.

Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

The above laptop belongs to a friend of mine. Please can you advise if the screen is faulty or possibly backlight?

The laptop is standard spec with xp home installed.

Answer:Satellite A100-521 - Screen blank but laptop working via external monitor

Its hard to determine the fault without looking at it in person.

If you see the backlight come on, but there is no image, then the LCD or LCD Cable or Graphics Board may be faulty.

If you dont see the backlight come on, but you can see a very faint/dark image on the screen, then it may just be a faulty Inverter.

I would send it to an ASP for a quote. There is a list of ASP's (service centers) on the Toshiba website in the support section.

Hey guys, I'm wondering if any one can assist me with a fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate x64 on my HTPC.The issue is this, the HTPC remains on at all times.
Every power saving feature I can find is turned off. Monitor is set to never turn off, pc is set to never go to sleep. In advanced power setting HDDs are set to turn of after 99999 minutes, never turn of network adaptors or put anything to sleep ever.
I have also been to device manager and selected never turn off network adapters (just in case)
I use my remote to turn on my TV and AMP. HDMI signal to TV and optical audio to AMP - no HDMI pass through of AMP.
When I switch OFF the AMP and TV the computer stays awake no problems. If it has been a few hours and I return and switch the TV and AMP ON the PC goes to sleep! I then need to use the power button on the pc case to wake it up again.
If I turn the system off and back on immediately, the pc stays powered on. It only arises after a few hours. (not sure how long exactly

This makes no sense, why would Win 7 go to sleep when it gets and HDMI signal?

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

Answer:Windows 7 goes to sleep when HDMI monitor is turned ON!

Since you`re using optical for sound, and the fact that no one has replied, I would try a DVI to HDMI cable, see if that fixes the issue.

I have no idea why your PC is shutting down, that makes no sense at all.

When I pull the second monitor out, the Bravia also stops getting a signal. Seems a bit weird.. How can I get it to work with just the Bravia attached?

Thanks,
Gijs

Answer:HDMI to HDMI only working with second monitor attached

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Have you made sure your graphics card driver is up to date?

Have you tried starting your PC up in safe mode and seeing if the problem still persists?

Please ensure you have done both of these and then post back; it would also be helpful if we knew your system specifications which you can fill in under 'User CP'.

Also does the task bar appear on the primary monitor or secondary monitor?

My Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro will not perform correctly when using external monitor.  When I right click to correct a spelling error, the correction suggestions pop up on the laptop screen.  it will also not oauto-fill previously filled fields in Chrome.  If I move the browser window to the laptop screen, everything works fine. It also seems to go slightly slower with the extenal monitor hooked up. I changed the HDMI cable and even bought a new monitor to try and there is no change.  It has to be a setting somewhere.  Can anyone help?

Answer:Caption boxes moved to laptop screen from external monitor and autofill not working

I believe you are using yoga 3 in 'Extend Display' mode? If not, then which mode?

You might need to go into Power Settings and select performance plan, since you are putting a little more pressure on the CPU and GPU.
Try to work connected with charger and see how are the results.

Not sure about chrome, could also be chrome's problem with an extend display.Have you tried any other laptop?

Hi!

After I put the laptop in sleep and wake it, I must unplug and replug the monitor for it to work.

It's like the HDMI does'nt wake up from sleep and need the replugging to work. As soon it is unplugged/replugged, it immediately works.

I upgraded to the last video drivers, I configured the power saving options to my best knowledge and still does'nt work.

Where did you get these? If from AMD, they may not work well because laptop manufacturers are infamous for customizing their hardware to the degree that only they drivers THEY provide work well. You should use the drivers from the laptop manufacturer's website. IF you're already doing that, there may be nothing you can do.

Hey! So I'm running my audio via HDMI from my graphics card and it plays through the speakers built into my monitor.

When I first did the Win 10 update I had no audio whatsoever, and followed some suggestions on online forums that lead me to disable the Realtek High Definition Audio which I did and upon a reboot- my HDMI audio was working.

But then I had another weird issue. My PC is set to never sleep as I use it as a media server, but my screens turn off automatically after 10 minutes. What im finding is that when I wake up my monitors the audio stops. When I view playback devices I can't do any tests because "the device is already in use by another application"

(note: I have the checkbox for allowing an application to take exclusive control of a device un-checked).

So far there are only 2 ways to restore audio. 1) restart the PC. 2) go into device manager > Sound, video and game controllers > AMD High Definition Audio Device > Disable... wait a few moments > Enable.

Any help/advice greatly appreciated!

No issues in waking up from sleep when not connected to HDMI port. When it is connected, the machine won't wake from sleep.  Any thoughts? This is sleep, not hibernation. Also, tried unplugging the monitor once asleep and this does not help. The only way to recover from the sleep issue is to hold the start button for 4 second and hard reboot the machine.

So I just bought a new computer and 2 identical monitors for a dual monitor set up.
Here are the products:
click here computer has vga and hdmi inputs and the monitors have all: vga, hdmi and dvi.
When I connect the monitor to the computer via hdmi (tried both monitors and several hdmi cables) it stays blank and says 'no vga input' on the screen.
The computer is set up properly; when I connect my tv to the pc via hdmi it works fine and works as a dual monitor extended set up should. This therefore indicates the computer is set up correctly, the leads are fine and thus the monitor is the problem.
It can't be faulty (or at least I hope not) as neither monitors will connect this way.
I have read around that windows 8.1 can cause these kind of problems but I really don't know much about this and have tried uninstalling and re installing graphic card drivers but it still doesn't work.
The computer always recognizes when the monitor is plugged in as the main screen will flicker and in control panel it displays both monitors as being connected; and as such if I move my mouse off the screen it will keep going as if I could see it on the next screen along.
Any ideas before I return the monitors? As I hateeee returning products purchased online.
Also thinking about purchasing a vga to hdmi converter - is this likely to work do you think?
Many thanks.

setop: T440S (20AQS00500)  with Ultradock and external HDMI monitorToday I updated the Firmware of my Ultradock to Firmware version:   2.17.000 to resolve the famous 3sec blackscreen that is describes in so many places. That did in deed resolve that problem I also updated my BIOS using the Lenovo Solution center to GJET74WW (2.24) But now, when I boot, I do not see any of the BIOS diagnostic on my external monitor. If I hit F1  the external monitor still stays black. That would be harmelss. But I also run Truecrypt and the Truecrypt prompt does not show on the external monitor.I have to blindly type my Truecrypt password and then Win7 shows nicely on the external screen. Our of the dock I went into the BIOS and made sure the display is set to "docking station". Any ideas ?

yes it will work at that resolutions. It is actually 2048 x 1152, but that resolution is not commonly used, so most references would state either 1920 x 1200 or 1920 x 1080.

Hi there.

I have this laptop some years now and works good. I'd like to put another screen on to my laptop so I would have 2. The laptop's and the new one. The problem is, that I connected it with a screen with a 22' 1900-1080 resoluton, and the big screen was not as I wanted to be. It had big big Windows. It was saying to me that the big monitor couldnt catch the max resolution.

Any ideas on what should I do?

My A100-906 from what I know has a VGA input. Am I able to add HDMI on to it?

Thanks in advance, panagiotis.

Answer:Satellite A100-806 - Can I add HDMI for external monitor?

Hi lualua,

> It had big big Windows
I think that?s because you don?t use the native screen resolution of external monitor. If the monitor supports 1080p screen resolution you should set it for external monitor. So right click on desktop and choose ?screen resolution?. Select the second monitor and set 1920x1080 screen resolution.

> My A100-906 from what I know has a VGA input. Am I able to add HDMI on to it?
It?s no input port, the VGA port on your computer is *output*. Furthermore there are no adapters from HDMI to VGA so you have to use the VGA port on your notebook for external monitor.

I have Lenovo B540 All-In-One (Windows 8) whose monitor is cracked and the screen is black. I'm trying to still use the computer or at least access the hard drive by attaching a second monitor through the HDMI Out connect slot in the back. So I purchased the "DVI-D to HDMI (or vice versa)" cable (Dynex brand) for $40 from BestBuy and made the connection to my DVI monitor.

Well, Lenovo turns on but is not recognizing the second monitor! Should it automatically recognize the second monitor or are there some steps involved like pressing down on certain function keys (like you would in laptops)? I've perused Lenovo's hardware support manual but they don't explain proper steps.

Does anyone know what the proper steps are when the original monitor is not working? I know for sure the computer itself is working; it's making all the right Windows start-up noise. No, the computer is not passworded so it should go in straight.

Would it be easier to connect to the TV via HDMI? Would I then need HDMI cables?

Thanks everyone for any suggestions you might have to offer.

Hi,
Before I wander off to buy a MiniDisplayPort to HDMI adapter and an HDMI adapter:Can someone first-hand confirm or disconfirm if the OptiPlex 9030 can be used as an external/second monitor via the HDMI IN (for my MacBook Pro/in general)?
According to ZDNet (on the 9030) it is possible:
"...plug in an external video source (via HDMI)..."
www.zdnet.com/product/dell-optiplex-9030/
According to this forum (but on the 9010) it is not possible:
"...I would like to inform you that both VGA and HDMI ports on the system are TV out connection... you won't be able to use this system as display only for a different system or laptop...."
en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19508673
Is it that the 9010 does not have HDMI IN and the 9030 does have HDMI IN (and hence the 9030) does work as an external monitor?
Thank you in advance for your help!

Answer:Can I Use the OptiPlex 9030 as an (External) Monitor via HDMI IN?

The setup guide shows you have one 19-pin HDMI-input port (#11) on back of the monitor so you should be able to connect an external video source, assuming the source puts out a compatible HDMI signal.
You may need to use the On-Screen Display (OSD) buttons (#6) to configure the display to accept the signal from the HDMI-input. The setup guide doesn't list the OSD options so you may have to figure those out yourself. The OSD buttons are on the right edge of the screen just below the optical drive.

I linked the laptop to my Sony LCD TV via HDMI, no problem. I have a LCD monitor (Acer, 24inch) which has a HDMI port too. I used it to play ps3 and xbox360 via HDMI connection, no problem. I have two 1.3 HDMI lines. Both lines work without any problem.

However, when I link my laptop to my Acer LCD monitor the external LCD monitor just can?t work properly. I can barely see what is showing on the monitor, very snowy. It is hard to describe. I took a picture but don?t know where to upload it here.

I tried both HDMI lines, but both failed. I tried to change some setting in the laptop, but nothing made any difference. I search for the video card driver on Toshiba website and found my current driver is updated.

I am not a tech geek, but I reckon I do know something about computer. Did I miss something here?

Hey,

If you connect your notebook to external monitor and you press FN+F5 key combination what happens exactly? Pressing FN+F5 key combination shows different options and you should test it with external monitor only (not clone the picture). If you work on external monitor only does this work?

Furthermore you should connect the devices before you start them.

Also have a look in BIOS and try loading the default settings. Make sure that HDMI cable is connect before you start Windows and check the situation again.

By the way: What operating system you are using exactly?

The y510p (single 750m version) outputs a black screen to Asus PB278Q monitor over HDMI, at any resolution, in any duplicate/extend/only mode using both Windows 7 and Windows 8. Other monitors work fine. This monitor supports 2560x1440, however even lower resolutions produce only a black screen. The monitor model name and supported resolution is recognized by Windows, and the monitor also recognizes that a signal is present over HDMI. However the screen is black, and the monitor, while connected and active, freezes to some extent as the menu buttons do not function until the signal is removed (removing the cable or deactivating the second display output). A theory I have is that the issue is with the Intel HD 4600, and if it were possible to force the use of the nVidia 750m in a single GPU setup then it may work. There are no BIOS options to this effect and the "preferred GPU" selection in the nVidia Control Panel has no effect outside of 3D applications. My colleague has a y500 with a dual 650m SLI setup and the monitor works fine for him. I have read that the SLI models use only the two nVidia GPUs and completely disable the Intel. Is it possible to also disable the Intel when only a single 750m is present, and/or is it possible to purchase a second 750m for the ultrabay separately?

Hi Everyone,
every time I plug in an external monitor to the HDMI port it flickers, but flickers the screen goes black and then displays a screen. There is no pattern to how it flickers, eg, hitting the cable or typing on the keyboard.
This occurs whether using an adapter converting to Video cable or simple a HDMI Cable. I have now used multiple monitors to verify it's not a monitor issue.
Any ideas as to what to do?

The monitor doesn't even get detected. I have verified that there is no problem with the cable. The monitor works when it's connected via HDMI to my desktop so I know the monitor doesn't have a problem either. No idea what the issue is? The monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster S24B300BHL and runs at 1920x1080 @ 60Hz, same as the laptop. Any help solving this would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:V5-591G-72SK to external monitor via HDMI not work...

Update on this... I connected the laptop to the monitor via their respective VGA sockets and the laptop made the New Hardware sound and detected the monitor. I then took the HDMI cable out of the port on the laptop and re-inserted it. Duh-duh. New Hardware sound again. On Display Settings there were now three displays. I unplugged the VGA cable and guess what? It still worked. I was now succesfully outputting the laptop to my external monitor via HDMI.  Why does the monitor only get detected if I use the VGA sockets first? Is this intentional or a bug?

Going nuts trying to get a new ASUS external monitor to work via HDMI cable with my Dell laptop. The Intel Graphics control panel recognizes the connection to the external monitor, identifies it correctly by brand and model, and allows me to adjust all the settings I would expect: refresh rate, resolution, output to clone/extended/laptop only/monitor only, etc. I can even move the mouse over to the extended monitor, take a screenshot, and see what the laptop 'thinks' it's displaying to the monitor. It's just that the monitor is blank, telling me "HDMI1 (or HDMI2) NO SIGNAL".
Here's what I know / have tried

Dell Inspiron 15R 5521
Windows 10 with latest updates (just yesterday in fact)
ASUS VE 278 LCD monitor
Graphics Driver is Intel HD 4000 v10.18.10.4653
I have uninstalled the above driver, deleted driver files, downloaded new files from Intel's website, and reinstalled the driver
I've verified that the HDMI cable and ASUS monitor are functioning properly by attaching them to a different laptop
I've verified that the Dell laptop in question has the same problem with a different external monitor
I have not verified whether or not the Dell laptop in question will successfully display to an external monitor using a VGA connection (I'm ordering an HDMI-VGA adapter after I hit 'post' on this post.)
I've tried every combination of power off/on, reboot, plug cable in, turn monitor off/on. Dozens of times. To the point that m... Read more

Anybody know?
I bought a USB 3.1 Type C Male to HDMI Female Micro USB 1080P Adapter Cable but it didn't work - nothing on the display in my Dell U3415W monitor, nothing on my projector either (windows 10 doesn't detect an external monitor).  Anybody got any ideas?

Apparently no all USB 3.1 Typce C cable is compliant. There's a guy on Amazon who works for Google whose reviews you should find.

My XPS13 9350 was one of the first with USB-C port (Thunderbolt 3) only and no DisplayPort, supplied in early 2016. It has caused a lot of headaches. As I tried to connect my external Dell monitor using  a USB-C to HDMI adapter from Dell (part no: 47KD7) there was no external display at all. Dell Support advised me to update BIOS. But it led to a complete freeze of my laptop and Dell replaced the motherboard. (It was a real nuisance as I use my laptop for work!!)
With the new motherboard,  the laptop/USB-C adapter/external monitor worked fine for 15 months. Until one day, out of the blue, the external screen started flickering with an image that was all distorted (cut in the middle). The laptop screen was fine. After a few weeks of flickering, there is no signal at all to the external screen. Moreover, as I connect the adapter in USB-C port the resolution on my laptop screen changes.
I know there have been a lot of issues with USB-C connector on XPS 13 and 15.  I have reduced wifi-power to 50%  but it has had no positive effect (several persons have said on this forum that it helped the video output).
I am grateful to learn if anybody with similar problems found a solution. Cheers

I currently have a laptop with a busted screen with HDMI as the only other output signal. I've also been experience freezes and hangs so I want to try and use the Reset or Refresh options of Win 8.1. However those only seem to display in the laptop screen. Is it possible to still access these settings? I've done some Googling and there were ideas of changing signal output priority and tearing down the laptop to disconnect the actual cable.

Hi all, I've recently purchased a HP15-AYO56TX laptop (i7 2.5GHz, 8Gb RAM, 2Tb HD model with both AMD Raedon R7 M340 4GBVRAM and Intel HD 520 graphics) and am curious what's the maximum resolution I can run on an external monitor via HDMI? Have been eyeing off a 21:9 ultra wide screen monitor with a 2560x1080 resolution which would be great with Revit and AutoCAD, but I believe some variants of HDMI only support up to 1920x1080 resolution? Anyone able to confirm? Cheers, Ben.

R7 M440 Graphics (4 GB DDR3 dedicated) You should have no problem driving 1920x1080 on an external monitor and I don't think that going higher will be an issue but sometimes it just depends on the monitor model.  I wouldn't use it for gaming, though.

I have a V570 running Windows 10. I just got a new Dell U2415 monitor, and I can't get my laptop or the monitor to recognize that they're connected. The monitor recognizes and displays my girlfriend's Chromebook, so the monitor isn't defective. My laptop outputs to my TV fine, so I don't think it's a hardware issue. I've tried different HDMI cables, I rolled back the graphics driver on my laptop, I even tried using an adapter to connect to the monitor's DisplayPort slot, but it won't detect the monitor and the monitor won't recognize that anything is connected. None of the Windows graphics settings helped, nor did the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel (it won't even let me choose Multiple Monitor mode). Any ideas?

Hi, I notice that I get a BSOD whenever I turn on my computer with an external monitor attached. Also have the same experience when running the windows experience index with an external monitor. W530 with K1000 video card, fully updated bios and nvidia graphics drivers (and all other lenovo drivers). Also tried updating to latest video drivers from nvidia site, still same problem. Anyone else experiencing the same thing? Suggestions?

Answer:BSOD on boot with external monitor plugged in to HDMI

We too are having issues with 3 W530s when connecting to any sort of external device, whether it is a monitor or projector, VGA, DVI or HDMI. We receive the nvlddmkm.sys blue screen upon connection of the device if the laptop is already running or shortly after login if we boot the machine up with the peripheral connected. We have updated BIOS, the nVidia driver, the Intel chipset driver and ran the computer in all display modes (generic, discrete and Optimus) and still get the error. Also noticed that when the Blue Screen occurs, there is increased fan speed on the exhaust and an acrid/ozone smell.

Hi, I have a Y50 (non-touch) and I am unable to find nor create the proper custom resolution through the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel (4600) for my external monitor (Monoprice IPS Zero G). On my previous and much older laptop, I was able to create a custom resolution through the nVidia control panel to display my external monitor at its recommended resolution of 2560x1440. However, the HDMI port seems to be limited to the Intel Control Panel. When I try to create the proper resolution, the following error appears: "custom resolution exceeds the maximum bandwidth capacity". Is there a workaround so that I can use my external monitor with its proper settings? Edit: Added "Lenovo Y50" to the title Edit2: I decided to try 2048x1152 and it works at 60hz without error. This is, however, still not my screen's native resolution and still looks fuzzy/causes eyestrain.

Answer:Lenovo Y50 - Custom Resolution for External Display via HDMI

BUMP. Can someone elaborate on the issue? I bought dvi-d dual link from : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00180F402/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1which is my second cable and I still cannot run anything higher than 1280x720 on HP ZR2740w... Even though I installed hd graphics from the latest version, I tried to use some nVidia tools but nothing is working. I bought that laptop so I can operate on external displays and nothing seems to work... The hdmi revision is 1.4 in the laptop and I run out of ideas what can be done to make it work -_- Can someone from lenovo talk about this?

Hi,  When using external display with my SL300, the screen will go blank for 2-5 seconds and then reappear. It does this maybe once every couple of days. Sometimes this happens much more often. And then it's very annoying. When the picture reappears, the HDMI signal indicator (monitor is BenQ 2400W) is displayed in screen. I have tried different cables with no change. My PS3 hooked up to my screen through hdmi cable and it works just fine. Any idea what the problem could be?  I'm thinking its signal loss from my SL300 but wanted to see if anyone else experienced this? My hardware: BenQ 2400W (1920x1200)SL300, Intel graphics version

Have you found any solution to this annoying broblem yet?

Hello Forum Greetings from London, UK. This is my first post and it's a bit of a noob question, so any guidance would be much appreciated. I recently purchased a Z580 with GT630M 2gb graphics card and would like to connect it via HDMI to an external monitor with a higher resolution than the screen of the laptop. For example, I'm currently looking at a 27 inch LCD monitor - a Hazro HZ27A to be specific - which has a resolution of 2560 x 1440, while the Z580 has a screen resolution of 1280 x 720. My question is: would the laptop be able to display/take advantage of the higher resolution of the monitor once connected, or would the output of the laptop be restricted/limited to the original resolution for its screen i.e. 1280 x 780, thus making a LCD monitor with a higher reolsution redundant? Hope this makes sense. Just trying to find these things out before buying a monitor. Regards Tom

Answer:Connecting Z580 via HDMI to external LCD monitor with a higher resolution

Hi Tom, I also purchased the Z580 with the GT630M recently.Yes you can connect to an external LCD monitor with a higher resolution than the laptop screen. I should note that I have only connected it to a HDTV via HDMI with a resolution of 1920x1080. You have to manually change to the higher resolution via the display settings as it will initially connect at the laptop screen resolution. David

Hello, I have just purchased an HDMI female to micro-HDMI male connector and tried it out with my Yoga! Everything works flawessly I managed to play two 4k videos from youtube simultaniously on both screens and I had no problems with performance which surprised me. But, after all there is a little problem. My external monitor supports 1920x1080 resolution max and when I move some of my windows from the laptop to the external monitor some of them look really really really big, some of them actually get resized correctly but many dont. For example ini the screenshots you can see how big an icon looks on the external monitor, I cant even see my whole Task manager, the right-click menu on the desktop takes up 1/9 of the screen and more. Is there a way to fix this or I will be the retard at work who bought a laptop for 1700$ and nothing works at 100%? http://prikachi.com/images/63/8235063I.jpghttp://prikachi.com/images/85/8235085Y.jpghttp://prikachi.com/images/87/8235087a.jpghttp://prikachi.com/images/92/8235092d.jpghttp://prikachi.com/images/99/8235099U.jpg

Have you set the Y3P at 1440p and the external at 1080p?

Connecting my new Lenovo Thinkpad yoga to an external monitor (Samsung SyncMaster P2770HD) with the mini-HDMI port to the HDMI port in the monitor, results in very bad display quality: text is fuzzy, edges, lines and text seems with white halo, as if this is not the native resolution of the screen (the screen native resolution is 1920x1080 and this is indeed the resolution I use). When connecting my old X220 to the same screen, but with a VGA to VGA cable, I get excellent display. What's going on?
