Possible hard drive upgrade on Ideapad 120s with emmc?

Question: Possible hard drive upgrade on Ideapad 120s with emmc?

I have seen that on older models with emmc drive, there was an available m.2 slot on the motherboard where you could put in an m.2 drive. Can you do that in the ideapad 120s? I have the 11 inch model with emmc drive soldered to the motherboard. Thank you.

Preferred Solution: Possible hard drive upgrade on Ideapad 120s with emmc?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Brand new Ideapad 120S purchased last Friday.Just got around to powering up. Went into Windows 10 to create a recovery drive and get the common non-descript error "A problem ocurred while creating the recover drive". First I used a 16GB PNY in the rightUSB port.Second I tried a 32GB SanDisk in the left USB port. What do I do now? The laptop appears to be working.

I am a new owner of a Ideapad 120S purchased yesterday on Black Friday.I have mostly owned Dell laptops previously. I am guessing that when I power the laptop the first thing I need to do is create a backup on a USB flash drive. Any gotchas I should know about?

Answer:new owner of Ideapad 120S

Yep, backing up is a good practice.

Other than that, you should be good to go.  Enjoy your new machine!

Windows is up to date.I tried a usb stick with Ubuntu 16.04  and FN works perfectly.  Seems to be a driver problem.I thought it was a fail driver. I dont know. PS. In BIOS is enabled FN key.

Hi,  I recently ordered an IdeaPad Y510P laptop that comes with 1TB 5400rpm 2.5" and 24GB M.2 hard drives. Can I remove both hard drives to sell them, and install a single 2.5" SSD without voiding manufacturer's warranty? Edit: As for reinstalling Windows 8, is it as simple as creating a recovery drive and then using it after swapping out the main hard drive?  Thanks in advance for all your answers.

Yes you can, but see my thread. I'm having issues cloning the bootloader. I can't get windows to work from my cloned hdd. If you can help me with the cloning process that'd be great

So, I do not know much about laptops or PCs, but I just recently purchased a 2TB hard drive for my PS4 to upgrade the memory from the old one. So now, I just have an old 500GB 2.5" hard drive laying around, and I am wondering if I can put it in my laptop, rather than just collecting dust. Thanks in advance!

Nowhere in the documentation, web site is any info about what kind of controller and hence what size SD cards this model is supporting.Even Lenovo tech support doesn't know that info!I am really hesitant to buy a SDXC card of +32GB only to find out it supports on SDHC cards, thus limited to 32GB... thanks for any useful info, Ralf

Answer:What kind of SD card controller is in a Lenovo IdeaPad 120S-11AIP? SDHC or SDXC compatible?

Hi ITWorxLA,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

As per system overview :
IO port: Memory card slot (SD/SDHC/SDXC/MMC)

Platform specification:
One microSD Card slot, supports up to 2TB

Usually there would be stickers on the box or laptop to indicate the format it also supports.
You can try to find/borrow  a spare 32GB SDXC to test first before purchase.

Hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Hello I thought id try my luck on here. I was given an Lenovo Ideapad 110S with an EMMC drive with the partitions deleted. Ive been trying to install Windows 7 and or 10 with no luck. I'm constantly getting hit with a "windows cannot be installed on this disk" error when I delete or create a new partition. the "next" button is highlighted but whenever I try to click it I get hit with the following message:

"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. this computers hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disks controller is enabled in the computers BIOS menu"

The BIOS that I have does not give me the option to change the disks controllers settings. the best I can do is change my UEFI/Legacy support settings and that doesnt seem to help with the situation. I tried looking for a recovery disk/files on the website but its still under maintainces and doesnt look like it'll be finished anytime soon since it was supposed to be live and ready from Noon today EST. Is there a fix for this? A way to updated my BIOS to get these features I need to change it? HELP> ME> PLZ>

Hello, for the past weeks I've been trying to tackle the following issue.I have a Lenovo Ideapad notebook that came with a 32gb eMMC card for storage. I wanted to downgrade it to Windows 7 so I ended up cleaning the card/drive completely. Soon after I found that there were no drivers available for Windows 7. So I tried going back to Windows 10 with the disc. The problem is I get the following error when picking the drive during installation:"?We couldn?t create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files.?I tried so many 'fixes' that I found during research but can't past this roadblock I've manually created the partition and even manually moved the installation files to the primary drive. Something tells me that it has to do with the eMMC. I can't even install a normal drive since there's no space for it.Please help guys!!

I decided to buy a 14" stream and the Curry's rep said that I could upgrade the 32gig to 64gig (as they didn't have the 64 gig for sale). However, I can't find any eMMC cards anywhere. Does anyone know how far the 14-z050sa can go up to in eMMC please, and where I can get replacements/upgrades from? I have read that the eMMC may not have much of a shelf life with repeated "swap file" operations, so I'm a little concerned about the whole issue and I might even go as far as to send the unit back to Currys without even being opened if I can't find an answer on this.

Means you have to replace the whole motherboard to get more storage.

Hi, it's not SSD or HDD. It's eMMC. eMMC is soldered on the mainboard, so you can not do anything on this. As you can see in this video, it seems to be a slot for an HDD or SSD : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoL3IXBTt4A.But, as you can also see at 15:31, the sata connector seems bo not be present. If so, you can't add anything more... (except if you know someone that is able to solder it on the mainboard).

To those in the forum I recently damaged my thinkpad edge laptop 15" after not long ago having to reload every program and everything onto it, it takes me sometimes a week to get things back to normal. It's damaged irrepairably but the hard drive is Ok. I've now bought a thinkpad G570. Can I simply replace the hard drive int he G570, with the pre-loaded harddrive from the THinkpad, and will it just load up and work? The solution that has been offered to me so far ist to buy the sata -usb cable, and attach the old hard drive to the new g570 and go through the one key recovery and transfer the whole system that way. Any ideas would be great. I'd prefer just to swap the new hard drive for the old.

Answer:Replacing Ideapad Hard Drive with Pre-loaded Thinkpad Edge hard drive

Hi, RichardBarclay

Provided the hard drives are the same size and use the same connection, there is no reason that the new computer shouldn't recognize it. And provided the new hard drive is simply removed and not touched until you're sure the old hard drive works, then there shouldn't be any danger in trying. If, for some reason, the old hard drive doesn't work in the new computer, then I would recommend getting a SATA-USB cable to simply transfer the files. And you may want to do that anyway as it is, in my opinion, a useful device to have in case you ever want to transfer data between drives again.

Best of luck,
Adam

I have a Dell 14-3452 given to me for my 10 year old grandson to use with Win10. It has the embedded eMMC installed with 32gb for C: drive. I was able to update Win10 to 1511. Not enough storage to upgrade to Win10 1607.

I downloaded Win10 from Microsoft using the MCT to a USB stick with the intention of doing a clean install to the eMMC and then using a 64gb SD card for the Apps.

I screwed up and deleted the C: drive partitions, I should have extended them instead.  Win10 install said unable to install on drive.

Found a tip on Dell forum to use Shift +F10 at the WIN10 install screen to get to diskpart. Then, list disk>select disk 1>clean> create primary partition>active> format fs=fat32 quick>convert gpt

Since then Dell 41-3452 says no drive installed.  I’ve reloaded the default using F9 at the setup screen. I can’t remove this embedded C: drive to re-initialize. With the Win10 USB stick installed I select USB at F12 boot up, the PC goes straight to Dell ePSA pre boot assessment diagnostics.

I think I may have killed this PC.  Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Question: eMMC drive dead?

I have an inspiron 14 3452 and when I boot, it says there are no bootable devices. I tried switching to legacy from the boot menu, I tried switching to default and even tried reorganizing the boot devices as shown in tutorials with no help. I have used the process of elimination to suspect that the chip has failed and was wondering, since the laptop has room for a HDD, if i were to buy a 250gb hdd would it boot?

Any 3.5" drive at 2T or under should work fine.  Upgrading the CPU would mean buying used - these CPUs went out of production not long after your system was current - and that was a decade ago.

Hello all

Laptop Model: Medion Akoya S4219
Medion serial n? MSN: 30020606
Hard disk: eMMC memory card 64GB

After a windows crash i deleted all partitions to cleanly reinstall a win 7or win 10 on this machine originally equipped with win 10, but when arriving to the partition selection I see a warning icon " Windows can't be installed in this hard drive" clicking on details is see something like " Windows can't boot on this type of media ...."
I tried to find a eMMC drivers for windows installer, and tried to install in terminal mode using Shift+F10 without any luck.
The priority would be to install a win 7 otherwise win 10 will be OK

Please how to success on it , thank you for your great help

Answer:Impossible to install Win 7, 10 on Medion with eMMC drive

I've worked with similar devices and also found them difficult to maintain, the price that they are sold at could be seen to place them in the disposable category. What I have found is that to replace the OS you need to use specific recovery software from the manufacturer.

The chance of a Windows Seven option is I think highly unlikely.

I have looked on their UK site but cannot locate the actual model you quote and my lack of language skills means that I cannot check their Belgian site

I would suggest you check the service links here ... Medion laptops, PC's & Tablets | Medion.com for a specialist install image for the actual model

Hi, Searched far and wide for solution to this but no luck yet.
Helping a friend who has a program that only runs on windows 7 so i would like to do a dual boot.
He has a Asus e402s laptop (cough) with windows 10 installed.
It has a 32 GB Samsung BGND3R eMMC storage device.
I have created a partition for the installation
The issue is when installing windows 7 on that partition it says

Windows cannot be installed to this disk windows needs the driver for device [intel SD host controller]
I have tried numerous drivers with no luck.
Is this possible?
Cheers

Some beginner questions about 10. Did some reading on the forums, some important questions still left. (I thought I will just wait until Threshold 2 to come out to install it)

1. Comparing Home and Pro (and Education and Enterprise): all the ISOs are the same size. I see no benefit for the Pro for my personal use over the Home. (Enterprise or Education would be nice, but it's unavailable)

Will the Home take up less space on the drive and be more fast on a slower system than the Pro?

2. I'm planning to have Windows 10 on 2 machines: one older laptop and a new "Windows with Bing" one I will buy in the near future, presumably coming with 10 preinstalled on its 32 GB eMMC drive. if I understand, WIMboot is phased out by 10 (I will upgrade, I mean, will do a clean 10 install from my 7 system; I completely skipped 8).

The question (regarding installing on the old laptop first): what's the difference between a 10 Recovery Drive created from Control Panel and the clean ISO? First I have to install from the clean ISO obviously, then I can create a Recovery Drive from Control Panel, but later can I use the same Recovery Drive USB for clean installations as well?

3. Any information on available on how Windows 10 installations work on these 32 GB small drive machines? How do I recover, do a clean install, and how do they save space by default? I understand there is a commend with which you can compress a 10 install on a large drive, but I suppose the installs on these smal... Read more

Answer:4 beginner questions: Home-Pro, Recovery Drive, 32 GB eMMC, drivers

1. Home will take up less space than pro, not sure how much less space. It will not run faster or slower than pro. (In fact, running home might take up less resources than pro because of the extra services pro has to run - so home might gain a slight performance edge over pro).

2. If you want Windows 10 activated for free, make sure you do an upgrade first - or capture the genuineticket.xml file (procedure for that on this forum in tutorials). If you have the install media created (USB/DVD), I don't see any reason to make a recovery drive. As far as I know the recovery drive has no additional or less capabilities than the install media does. The only time I make an actual recovery drive is when I get a new computer and I use the manufacturer's software to retain all the drivers and crapware on a backup.

3. I just purchased a Nextbook Flexx 10 from WalMart. It came with Windows 8.1 Bing. Make sure you make an image of that before you mess around with upgrading because you can't download a Windows 8.1 Bing ISO anywhere that I have found. I just used Macrium Reflect free to make the image of the entire hard drive into one file. I suppose making a recovery drive before upgrading would work to.

I am wondering if it is possible to use one of the Mini PCI Express Card slots for a SSD drive and if there exists a compatible product in the marketplace. It would be great to use a SSD-drive as boot-drive and the harddisk for data. Does anybody know a solution? Thanks in advance

Answer:Upgrade Ideapad S10-2 with SSD-drive

Hi and welcome to lenovo forum...
unfortunatly , even when you found a minipci-e SSD ... there is no option to boot from minipci-e ...
and only a few minipci-e cards will work at all ...if its not on the whitelist they wont work...
and SSD in 2,5" Sata-HDD form is faster, "cheeper" yes it is  and could replaced the HDD without  trouble like above..

Hello, Somewhere in other thread I read that Lenovo offers Partition such that we get more space on D Drive compare to C Drive, so that we can keep all the Personal files, Photos, Videos, Documents on D drive and in case of system Crash it would be still recoverable. I got my new Lenovo 530 4051, just last week however my C drive is of 188 GB where as my D drive is only 29 GB. I was expecting at least 80 GB of D drive. Is anybody have similar experience? If I have to get more size on D drive what should I do? ThanksMak

Answer:Ideapad 530 4051 - Hard Drive Partition - Less D drive than C

You should change partitions sizes, obviously. You can use PartedMagic, GParted or Acronis Disk director suite.maybe some other software, but I trust only these. Also you can trust Vista built-in disk management.

I'm considering the Ideapad 510 15" (Part Number 80SR0055CF).  i5-6200U, 4GB onboard RAM, 1TB 5400RPM hard drive. http://shop.lenovo.com/ca/en/laptops/ideapad/500-series/510-15-inch/ Can I upgrade the RAM myself? I see some 510 models have 4GB onboard + a 4GB DIMM so I'm assuming that if I get the 4GB onboard they'll be an empty DIMM slot I could add RAM to, is that the case?  If so, what's the max memory I could add? What about the hard drive, can it be upgraded/replaced?  At some point I would probably want to put in an SSD. If someone could link to the hardware maintenance manual that would be really useful, then I could check these things myself.  I can't find the manual for this particular laptop.  Thank you! Mod's Edit: System model added to the front of Subject line to improve visibility / clarity.I edited the mod's edit because they tagged it as "510-15ISK" which I'm pretty sure is a Yoga, I'm looking at the Ideapad not the Yoga. I added a link to the product page for further clarity. Lenovo's product naming is confusing so I'm not sure.

I want to replace the hard drive in my new ideapad 100 with a 250gb SSD but when i attempted to get it open i discovered that there is one screw with a tamper evident seal on it. I don't know what to do at this point i've never owned a computer that doesnt have openings on the bottom for replacing ram and hard drive. I would also like to replace the 4gb ram module it came with with an 8gb module. Does anyone know how i should go about this? It seems unfair that if i cant open my computer to replace this terrible preformance hard drive with a better one.

Ideapad 100 use onboard RAM. you cant replace it. only add one.

So I was playing with my laptop when suddenly the game froze. I tried to Alt + Tab but then the whole desktop froze. I also noticed that my laptop was very warm. Without anything happening, I decided to manually shut it down with the power button.

But when I opened it, the screen was stuck at the Lenovo logo but the loading wasn't appearing. After that, a boot menu opened but it just kept saying "Media not found". I did some research and used BIOS and it showed that it couldn't detect my hard drive. I've done everything from restarting to system recovery but nothing worked.

Given that my defender was updated and I have not downloaded any suspicious file yet, could this be a hardware problem?

Here are some photos showing my problem

Answer:Ideapad 310 hard drive not detected

Sure looks like a hardware issue.     The first two screenshots of your laptop attempting to boot off a network, which is not going to happen, but the next screenshot clearly shows the HD missing in the BIOS.   Defender is not the best AV solution, but the HD should still be detected in the BIOS regardless of whether it as infected by a virus or not.   I would try resetting the BIOS to its setup defaults and see if it s recognized, but most likely you will need to seek a replacement. Good Luck,

Hi all. I have a Ideapad Y570 and I was wondering if there's anyway to add a second hard drive to the computer. I know it does not have an extra bay, but I'd seen some hard drive expansion sets that allow you to take out the CD drive and replace it with a bracket that allows you to use a second hard drive. Is this available for my Y570 at all? Thanks.

Answer:Ideapad Y570 - 2nd hard drive

Yeah, it's possible. I currently have this and a Seagate Momentus XT in where the DVD drive goes, but I haven't been able to fit the faceplate on the caddy yet. It works, though.

I would like to install a 128 gb m.2 SSD (NGFF) as the boot drive for this system while leaving the 500 gb hybrid drive for file storage and applications.  Can you recommend a step-by-step process to accomplish this?  I haven't seen other forum posts where the m.2 drive would be the boot drive.  The O/S is Win 8.1 and the only system backup I have made to this point is on the main drive. (Specific model number is 20270; part number 59399722 if that helps!)  Any help or guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

My new Ideapad 500 (15) makes a clicking sound when the hard drive is accessed. This has not happend to me with any other Lenovo's is there a fix?

Answer:IDEAPAD 500 Hard Drive Clicking sound

hi CStone,

Welcome to the Forums.

Hard drive clicking noise is mostly caused by the Slider (and Head) or the actuator arm when it knocks the drives' platter repetitively to try and read the data or recover from an error in reading the data from the platter.

If the clicking continues, it might damage the actuator arm completely causing a click of death - as shown in this video.
 - Link to image

If the clicking noise is loud then I would recommend you contact lenovo and report your findings as you likely need to get the drive replaced.

In addition, you can also run a diagnostic test on the drive to verify its health.

Let me know how it goes.

Hello all, I've had the IdeaPad y510p for a while now. It is the model with dual graphics, 16 GB of RAM, and the 1TB HDD + 24GB SSD combo. (If you need me to be more specific, just let me know). The 5400 rpm hard drive has been slowing this machine down and I recently purchased a 512GB SSD. Is this compatible with the laptop? From my little knowledge of hard drives, I assumed it was and picked it up. Also, how would I go about cloning my PC so that everything can be copied to the SSD, including recovery partitions and boot files and all that stuff. And one last thing. Is the 24GB SSD separate or part of the 1TB HDD...in other words, can I keep the secondary, smaller SSD in as well?  Thanks in advance!

Answer:Replacing Hard Drive with SSD in IdeaPad y510p

Hi Imjustaguy,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

This is one Y510p HDD and SSD Combination

ST1000LM024 BP 9.5MM 5.4K 1T HDD

LITEON LSS-24L6G NGFF 24G SSD

The HDD and SSD are separate.

And the Drive you posted will work as an HDD replacement the size fits and the SATA version SATAIII will work as well. You can also check the SSD Manufacturer's compatibility chart for the Y510p

About cloning your drive up to the Recovery Partition, You can use Aomei

the thing is not Im not sure if your current HDD will fits in the 512 SSD, This depends on the USED space on the Current HDD. I strongly recommend to perform a Recovery on the OLD HDD before coloning it.

Regards

I'm potentially interested in the S10-3t, but only if I can replace the HDD with a SSD. I have not been able to find any detailed pictures of the bottom of the unit, and when I called Lenovo, the sales rep wasn't sure but he thought that the hard drive was NOT user-accessible. Is that true? If I cannot upgrade the HDD easily, this unit is a nonstarter for me. Thank you.

You can replace it if the SSD have SATA connector.

Hello, long post ahead but I've had lots of problems!  I received my Y410P about a month ago (in January 2014) and since then it's been working perfectly except for recurring hard drive issues...the first time there was something wrong with Windows, where the Windows 8 search function would crash whenever I started typing in it. The Scan Drive for Errors function detected errors on the drive and repaired them, but after that, Google Chrome and other programs (like Steam) wouldn't open, so I did a factory reset and that fixed everything at the cost of having to re-install all of my programs and documents. A few days ago, after working fine for weeks, my computer refused to open programs, saying that "The application has failed to start because the side-by-side configuration is incorrect." Again, Scan Drive for Errors detected errors and fixed them. But today, programs wouldn't open and Scan Drive for Errors failed to fix the problem, as after the computer restarted and went through the repair process, I got an error message saying that the repair was unsuccessful, and restarting the computer after that gave me a BSOD with an "0xC000021A" error message. System Restore said there were no restore points available, so I had to Refresh my PC to fix the issue. What could be causing these HDD issues and is it a sign of a bad hard drive? I'm under warranty still, so should I try and get a replacement laptop? Thank you!

Try running a viruscan. Do a fullscan if possible.

The internal 750 GB HDD on my IdeaPad Z585 has been showing signs of failure and today it seems to have died.  Last night I did to backups - one using Windows 7 Backup and Restore and one using the WD Passport Utilities.  Both backups are on an external WD USB Drive.  Also created a Windows 7 Repair Disk.  I purchased a new Seagate internal HDD to replace the failed drive.

I'm a Windows newbie and not sure how to proceed.  The laptop didn't come with Windows 7 disks and when I tried to download the ISO files from Microsoft the Product Key on the back of my IdeaPad didn't work.  Can't seem to find the files on this site.

Any simple guides on how to reinstall Windows 7 HO version and restore my files?  I don't want to move to Windows 8 or 10.

After only about 14 months of owning my P500, my hard drive died (at least that is the conclusion I have come to...) I took yhe hard drive out of the laptop and put it in a drive adapter to see if my other laptop will see the drive. It does not. My question... how picky must I be when choosing a replacement hard drive? I know I don't want a small drive, so I'll probably stick with a 1TB (as was the original drive.) I'd like a 7200 rpm drive as opposed to the original 5400 rpm. Would that be a problem? I've got the recovery disks from Lenovo. I assume all I need to to is install the new hard drive, boot from the recovery DVD and let it run its processes. Is it as simple as that? Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide! Bob

Answer:Ideapad P500 - need to install new hard drive

I have a similar problem. I purchased that laptop for my son. It is out of warranty and the hard disk has crashed just. I have tested it on another machine and it won't mount. Makes great grinding sounds instread. Several problems now:   1) This machine was supplied with no DVDs to my knowledge. Since the recovery partition is on the crashed hard drive - is there any way to get another copy of Windows 8 short of purchasing one (i.e., by having the laptop I have a licence - however I have no ability to reinstall the OS or access that license).   2) Assuming I either buy another copy of windows (no wonder microsoft is making so much) or can acquire one from Lenovo (that would be fantastic service if I could) I assume I can install it and the machine will at least function until I can install drivers downloaded from this site.   3) What are the specs for teh SAT interface in this machine? Will it take a SATA III drive and run at full speed?  Interestingly this is the second hard disk that has failed in the ~2.5 year life of this machine. The date on the disk is 25 Oct 2012. I checked on the WD website - no limited warranty for this disk drive, even though WD blue supposedly has a 2 year warranty ... I guess that does not hold for disks supplied through Lenovo.  Any comments would be much appreciated. Particularly on whether it is possible to get a replacement copy of Windows or license from Lenovo. CheersPeter

Hello, this morning my 2 year old Y400 informed me that my hard drive is failing. I suspected this might happen a while back when I started having abysmally slow data transfer (regularly down to few dozen to several hundred KB/s, 100% active time). For the time being, my computer seems to be running as it should (at least it was while I was making backups of my files) but I know I'll be needing a new HDD sooner rather than later. So anyway, I began looking around online for a replacement drive for my current 1TB, 5400 rpm unit (part number 16200208) and came across this one on Amazon: 7200rpm-Laptop-Drive-Lenovo-IdeaPad. The seller says its compatible with my Y400, but I'd rather not simply take their word for it. I don't know enough about the details of computer parts to tell for myself whether it would work for me or not, there are too many unknown unknowns. Can you folks help me out? If that one I found won't work, is there something that you might recommend as factory replacement/minor upgrade? Thanks in advance! -DG

I'm thinking of buying an IdeaPad Y560(0646-2EU), it has such amazing spec for it's price, however the 5400rpm hard drive would bottleneck the performance on this machine greatly. I wanted to buy a 7200rpm (or faster) drive to replace it with, however I'm uncertain how I'd reinstall the OS after replacing it? From the other posts I've read searching for an answer to this, it seems that the OS is installed on a (non-lettered) service partition, with the OS recovery on it that only boots when you kit a certain key while it's powered off. Also, will i be able to clone the recovery partition to the new drive?

Answer:Installing new Hard Drive on IdeaPad Y560

Both Seagate and Western Digital now have aversion of Acronis True Image available on their websites. With this you can clone the entire HD to a new one, plus create disk images. For a HD other that those brands, various cloning/imaging software is available. Also create the Lenovo recovery disks. They can put a default factory install on a new HD, minus the recovery partition.

Hi, I wanted to totally start over with my Ideapad. It has a Hitachi SATA of some type. Anyway, I want to load a different OS, but before I did I wanted to do a full zero insertion on the drive, from within windows. It caused windows to crash (why didn't I see that coming? ) I can boot to the USB but would like a recommendation on this: Want to first format the drive, then zero insert for full erase effect.  How is this done? Load some temp OS on the USB and then how to get to the hard drive and reformat it? Thanks.CF

Answer:How to reformat the hard drive on my Ideapad P500

Hi cottagefarmer ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Take note that loading the harddrive with a different OS (windows) would require you to have another product key to activate. Clearing the harddrive and its partition would also remove the factory reset image that came with the machine.

Best to plan out how you would proceed and what are the software you need including backup plan just in case.

Only program i really care about after personal files is Office.  I've upgraded it to Win 10.Do i just take out the old HD and put in a new?  is all the recovery info on the ssd?Thanks...

Answer:Ideapad y580 hard drive replacement

Hi vector74 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Once you have the indication of a failing harddrive, ensure that you have backed up all files needed and that you have the product keys of your software as you would need to re activate it. Check if you can still create your recovery image .
Check your Mircosoft account for activated status and entitlement of the digital license for guarantee.

Factory image is on the original drive but since Windows 8 and Windows 10 image is easier to download with the needed drivers in the support site, then you don't need to worry since activation would be automatic as an OEM systemboard keeps it coded inside.

Hope this help answer your query.
Update us how it goes best for you.

Hi beaulexus, welcome to the forum.

Would I be right in assuming that your hard drive crashed, and you don't have any other backups?

The short answer is no. However: if you call for support, even if it's out of warranty, for a small fee they will provide you with a set of recovery disks. Those will bring you back to your shipped system state.

Check here on the "Products and Parts" tab, for what drives will work in your system.  Enter your serial number on the Parts Lookup. Most of the drive replacements, can be found at any major PC system hardware retailer.

Answer:lenovo ideapad 300 80q7 hard drive failure again

Hi me2a0,

Greetings.

Would you recall the harddrive brands that was replaced for you on previous service as with the current.
Based on the history either something triggering it internally or just a bad stock.

You can try calling technical support to check your option but with warranty expired for several months, I am not optimistic.

Moving forward, I think you already know how this case would proceed as another drive replacement but try considering a different harddrive manufacturer this time.

You can try to run hardware diagnostics to confirm probable harddrive failure specially if BIOS would not even detect the drive.

I've been looking at the SanDisk 240GB 520mbs SATA III SSD. I've also heard that some notebooks might need sizing brackets for their drive replacements, will I require one for the S400? Thanks for your help.

I am thinking of purchasing the Y510p.  For the screens, I noticed that there are 2 different ones....15.6" HD LED Glare 1366x768 and 15.6" FHD LED Glare Wedge 1920x1080.  Aside from the resolution, I am wondering if there is any difference between the two. Also, I would like to purchase a hard drive bay adapter for the ultrabay, but I cannot see any on the site.  Does Lenovo sell these?  If not, where could I purchase one?

Hi dragonfly8,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

The 15.6" HD LED Glare 1366x768 and 15.6" FHD LED Glare Wedge 1920x1080 has no other differences other than the resolution
HD(High Definition) and FHD (Full High Definition) only points to the 768P and 1080P.

The Ultrabay for this system are not out yet, it will be an accessory for this model to be released by Lenovo, As for now there are no ETA yet for the Ultrabay

You can keep in touch with Lenovo Sales through this Chat on when the Accessories might be available for purchase.

But the port utilizes a generic Port for caddy so this one will do if you're willing to add one now

Hello Everyone, I would like to express my disappointment mainly with the Lenovo service support in Brno of Czech Republic. Let me explain you. I bought the lenovo ideapad z500 i7 in July 2013, after normally using it for about 3 months, i noticed an annoying clicking noise from the hard drive which gets worst as the time passes by. The most important thing with this clicking noise is that the performance of laptop not only in terms of speed but also on booting has been affected.I gave the laptop back to the store where i bought it from (Electroworld in Brno Olympia) and they spent 2 weeks just to give the laptop to lenovo and examine it. Guess what? they found nothing!! and they just performed format. I have been tortured by problems when i had other laptop branches and i was hoping that lenovo could offer something better and more reliable. Could you please explain to me what kind of sound from the hard disk affects the general performance of laptop and it actually works but it operates like a turtle. Totally unacceptable that as Lenovo , you have not given a clear answer to other forum members as to whether this clicking sound is normal or not. I would appreciate to provide me some guidance to resolve the problem immediately. Thank you in advance

Hard drive clicking noise is mostly caused by the Slider (and Head) or the actuator arm when knocks the drive's platter repetitively to try and read the data or recover from an error in reading the data from the platter. If the clicking continues, it might damage the actuator arm completely causing a click of death - as in this video.

I'm unsure the tech. that handled the case just performed a format on the drive (perhaps when the tech. is working with the unit, it didn't show any error on the HDD diagnostics and the clicking issue didn't happened either).

I recommend that you contact Lenovo directly and report the issue so they could observe the machine further.

I have all my work files on a portable HD drive which enables me to share my work between my desktop and my laptop. My portable HD drive has to be named D: drive due to the huge amount of special custom templates and formulas I use in my daily work. Unfortunately the software I use is old fashioned so I cannot change the drive letter. Because my old laptop crashed I've now got the new IdeaPad V570 so I was going to change the disk drive letters when it dawned upon me that the Lenovo D: drive is filled with drivers, fingerprint, and One-Key Recovery software which I probably can't change the drive letter on. What can I do?

Answer:IdeaPad V570 - I need my external USB Hard disk to be the new D drive

rasj, welcome to the forum,

does drive management show drive D as being a logical drive?

On an U550 I have here I took a look and D was a logical drive, it contains just one folder called Drivers which looks to me like a repository should there be a need, during a support call or something, to roll back to an original driver and also to save a bit of space on the C drive

Anyway, I went ahead and changed the drive letter and haven't have had negative effects; system runs and also re-boots without complaining.

The V570 is not an U550, but my guess is the installation style is the same.

On a Y510p laptop, can the hard drive be easily changed? What I mean by "change" is, take the existing one out and put a different one in. This thread mentions removing a drive, but the picture is blurry and I am unclear on what is meant by "taken off the panels".Also, are only certain drives able to work with this machine? Thank you in advance.

Ideapad Z560, Model 0914, Win7 home premium..  Hard drive started acting up until it got to a point it would not run.  Ran chkdsk and some other utilities, many bad sectors, could nto even access the recovery partition.  Cought a new drive, but I cannot find any restore media downloads or any alternatives from Lenovo other than the one click restore.  SOmeone please tell me I can download a bootable recovery media for cdrom, USB or DVD.  I may be able to if I can find the right "57" number, but I can't find that either.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Even tried downloading MS win7 media, but it was not allowed since the key if for and OA (OEM) install. thanks! -m

Hi, I just bought this nice laptop with a 500GB HD and would like to replace it with an SSD. Backed up Windows to a USB flash drive and as I am getting ready to boot from the drive I don't see the option to do so. I tried changing the Boot Mode to Legacy but cannot even see that option. I get a message: "Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed" even though I have the USB and new hard drive installed and connected. In Boot Manager I only see: EFI Network 0 for IPv4 (######) I'm I missing something? Thanks for any help.

Answer:IdeaPad S210 hard drive replacement and OS install

hi antitruster50,

Welcome to the Forums.

Just to verify,  did you created a usb recovery drive using this method and tried to boot from it? If you did and it doesn't work, check if you see the following in the BIOS and set it accordingly:

Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled (if applicable)

Exit Tab:
OS Optimized Defaults = Disabled / Other OS (if applicable)

Alternatively, you can also do the following:
1. Booting from the stock 500GB, mount the SSD into the Ideapad S210 using a 2.5" SATA enclosure
2. After successfully mounting the SSD, use Paragon Backup & Recovery 12 Home free trial to migrate the OS, drivers, app, etc. from the stock HDD to the SSD (complere guide here). When successful, remove the stock HDD and put the SSD in place and observe (no need to change any settings in the BIOS).

Let me know how it goes.

Answer:Lenovo ideapad z500 hard drive problem?

Sure looks like the hard drive is failing, and needs to be replaced.     If it is under warranty, I would have it fixed under warranty.     If not, Lenovo support should be able to send you recovery media to reinstall Windows (WIndows 8?), and I believe on that model the Windows Product ID is stored in the BIOS, so the Windows product ID key will be applied automatically when you reinstall. Good Luck  http://www.lenovo.com/contact/uk/en/  Lenovo Support - United Kingdom0333-777-3991 (National Rate)9:00 - 18:00 Monday - Friday

I have problem with my Ideapad U510. Taken to a shop. It could be a fan problem or could be a hard drive problem or both. My U510 has 24GB SSD + 1 TB HD (I think it is WD). The OS was Win8 which I upgraded to Win8.1 within days I received the laptop.Have 2 questions:Q1/  Can the hard drive swap out and replaced by a new drive? In other word, will the existence of the 24GB SSD posed a problem in this swapping?Q2/ The HD is 1TB. Googling the spec for U510, there is an old pdf from Lenovo saying this laptop support 500GB, 750GB to 1TB HD. If the original drive is the source of problem and I have to replace it, does anyone know whether I can replace the original 1TB drive with a 2TB drive?  Also, the original HD spins at 5400rpm, can U510 accepts HD with spinning speed of 7200rpm? Thanks in advance.Sorcerer

My hard drive started ticking over the weekend while I was online banking.  The recovery screen came up and I selected a few options  but nothing worked.  Now when it boots it runs through Bios and then states "cable disconnected." I want to replace the hard drive but am wondering why the one key recovery no longer works.  Is the recovery on the 32GB SSD that came with the PC?  Do I just need to replace the hard drive to get the one key recovery to run?  I am not even sure what is on the SSD since it did not show up on my computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I would rather not have to spend money on repairs if all i need to do is replace the hard drive.  Thanks, Erik

Hi, I just imported an Ideapad u410 from the US to the UK. It turned on fine, I started noticing the wifi proglem everyone else are having. No big deal, got a usb wifi adapter laying around I can use. Then I noticed that the hard drive (C, no other harddrive visible) was rediculously small (20-30 some GB, I forgot the exact figure) with almost all of it's space used. I figured this was a partition for the OS and that for whatever reason the rest of the drive wasn't showing. I noticed the windows update icon showing on the shutdown button and figured perhaps setup wasnt complete so I pressed restart. It kept restarting, downloading more updates and restarting, I walked away to have dinner when it proclaimed it would now install update 1 of 96. When I came back the laptop was off. I turned it on to be met by an endless cycle of BSOD during startup followed by a failed startup repair... I guess there wasn't enough space on the C drive for the windows update. What do I do now?

I have the 10.6" little red 100s Ideapad with Win 10. It comes with a 32GB eMMC SSD and I thought that would be sufficient, as it is a 2nd system for me. I have a 'workhorse' Dell laptop that I use at work and home and I bought this to take to class and travelling, etc. I really thought I could get away with the smaller drive. I put a large micro SD card in and keept many of my files in the cloud, but I am still running out of space. I would like to replace the SSD with a larger one, like 120 GB, nothing too huge. Can it be removed from this system easily? What is the size of the drive, the specs, what can I buy to match it? or is it even possible? Thanks

My wife received her new Ideapad Y530 40512UU last week.  So far she likes it very well but I have been wondering if it has the Active Protection System included on it.  I have the Thinkpad T400 and like the APS feature.  The specs on the Ideapad seem to indicate that it is included on many models but I can't find anything in the config that would lead me to believe that it is active on her system.  Is there any way that I can check it without the Thinkvantage Active Protection System properties utility that is included on the Thinkpads?

Has anyone been able to transfer the OneKey recovery partition to a new hard drive on the IdeaPad Y430/530/730? Reason I ask is because I want to transfer the OneKey in the latest Y series IdeaPads to a Y410. I have placed a hard drive for a Y430 in a Y410 and it boots into it just fine with the NOVO button. I was hoping I could transfer it over and recreate a Windows image for the Y410. However, I have noticed that OKR 6.0 will not run in a Y410 [at least when I installed it on mine]. It may work on a fresh install of XP [hopefully]. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I suppose you'll not be able to transfer recovery partition image from one HDD to another.OKR 6 runs flawlessly on XP on every Lenovo Ideapad or Len3000 new series - I checked on Y510/Y710/s9/G410.

Hi,I've looked through lots of threads on this but can't seem to find the answer to a basic question... How much space should I actually have available for my own stuff after doing the hotfix? I did the disk partition hotfix and I have 100gb available now on my C drive, but only 66gb of that is actually available for me to use. I have 40 gb of music and 26 gb free. The rest is mostly taken up by Windows etc. I thought the hotfix would give me 100gb of actual available space but this isn't the case. Is this right? Thanks a lot,Marc

Answer:Ideapad Yoga 13 Disk Partition/Hard Drive Hotfix Question

of the 128 GB , you lose rought 2gb to efi/boot/system partitions... then depending on the amount of ram (lets say 4gb) you loose about 4-8GB for intel rapid start, and about another 9GB for the recovery partition.. so that is about 15-20 ish GB

This Y710 came with an extra HD enclosure but without the connector inside the enclosure. I bought a 320GB SATA drive for the enclosure and noticed the missing connecter. Does anybody know of where I can find the connector that would make it hot swapable? I hate to have to either swap the HD from the original hard drive enclosure or remove the connector from the original enclosure everytime. Besides, with the extra HD enclosure plus the connecter, I can also use it as an external USB drive and with the option to insert it internally. Any advise would be appreciated.

Hello!
About 6 days ago i bought a new DVD-ROM drive the Pioneer 120S and about 3 days ago i noticed that something isnt right with it. I noticed that when i tried to copy a file of 500MB to my HD, it took 15 minutes according to the dialog box i dont know if that accurate but it took very long for sure.

I did some testing and found out that if i leave the drive unused for a while 10 - 20 minutes and then try to use it it wont spin up!! IT WONT SPIN UP no matter what! even if i try to run nero speed or other benchmarking software. The drive reads the cd or dvd allright but at very low speed say 1x instead of 30x.

Now if I try the same thing soon after inserting a disc the drive performs ok.

I know that there is a silent mode for this drive which i have it disabeled.

The system as a whole is just a few days long and it performs all right.

Thank you

Okay, here's a weird one. And of the searching I've done, it seems others who've had this problem have had encryption, which I don't.

Problem: When I click on my H: drive or try to access it from the command line, it gives me an access denied error. However, all of the applications that I have installed on that drive run without issue. So, there is some access there. (See attached images. The first shows the hard drive state in diskmanager and in windows explorer. The second image shows the minecrafter launcher profile (that it is stored in H: and the application running, proving that there is some access.

System: Home built PC: (C:) 240GB SSD for OS, (E:) 1TB HDD for file storage and backup, (H:) 1TB HDD for large applications and video editing files. All drives are Simple, Basic, and none have encryption. All use the SATA connectors.

Process:
I had Windows 7 Home 64 bit with, among many other things, Comodo Internet Security, Virtualbox, ImageDisk.
During the upgrade process, I noticed that Windows 10, during the upgrade, ran the file system check and fix "problems" on the H: drive.
(Side note) Having forgotten to uninstall Comodo before the upgrade, I did not have network after the upgrade. The fix was non-trivial as I had to use a second computer to download the unofficial comodo uninstaller. Reboot. Uninstall the network devices. Reboot. And once Windows 10 was up and running, it reinstalled the network devices and the network was available.

I have an HP p6604y desktop that is about 5 years old. I added an extra 1TB HD to it not longer after purchase. That drive died, and now the main (original) 1TB HD is acting up.  I'm trying to find out if I can replace the original 1TB drive with a new drive that is larger. I find nothing to indicate if this is possible. The system has the N-Alvorix-RS880-uATX (Alvorix) motherboard with the AMI bios listed as v6.02 dated 7/21/10. I do not recall ever updating the BIOS, and I cannot find that there is one posted on the HP site. Does anyone know if this system will support a drive larger than the original 1TB, and if so how large? Thanks in advance. Scott

BUT... i don't know if it'll work with my system, I always though that because my pc takes IDE HD's; any IDE HD would work.

kinda in a hury for an answer because the sale ends soon and that's the cheapest 7200 rpm HD i can find, and i really don't wanna spend 50 dollars for a new hd..

Don't believe you would have to worry. Will work.
Biggest problem is being the winning bidder.
Would also be a great performance boost.
If you don't win it, may have one lying around you could get.
