XPS 13 9350 Flickering external monitor using USB-C to HDMI adapter

Question: XPS 13 9350 Flickering external monitor using USB-C to HDMI adapter

My XPS13 9350 was one of the first with USB-C port (Thunderbolt 3) only and no DisplayPort, supplied in early 2016. It has caused a lot of headaches. As I tried to connect my external Dell monitor using a USB-C to HDMI adapter from Dell (part no: 47KD7) there was no external display at all. Dell Support advised me to update BIOS. But it led to a complete freeze of my laptop and Dell replaced the motherboard. (It was a real nuisance as I use my laptop for work!!)
With the new motherboard, the laptop/USB-C adapter/external monitor worked fine for 15 months. Until one day, out of the blue, the external screen started flickering with an image that was all distorted (cut in the middle). The laptop screen was fine. After a few weeks of flickering, there is no signal at all to the external screen. Moreover, as I connect the adapter in USB-C port the resolution on my laptop screen changes.
I know there have been a lot of issues with USB-C connector on XPS 13 and 15. I have reduced wifi-power to 50% but it has had no positive effect (several persons have said on this forum that it helped the video output).
I am grateful to learn if anybody with similar problems found a solution. Cheers

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, I would love to ask for some help!
I've recently purchased the newer Dell XPS 13 9360 Non-touch (not the 2 in 1) and am having some trouble with using an external monitor. The screen (on the external monitor) keeps on flickering and has a very unstable connection.
I've searched and found that apparently lowering the power output of the WIFI network adapter can fix this problem.
The problem is that the current XPS's wifi adapter doesn't allow the power output to be changed. The previous fixes were geared towards intel wifi adapters.
The general power settings for the computers doesn't show wifi card power controls.

I have updated all the drivers for the computer including the wireless adapter. Still the options doesn't change.

Has anyone found a way to get a stable external monitor to work with the Killer Wireless Adapter cards?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:XPS 13 9360 External Monitor Flicker with USB C - HDMI Adapter [Killer Wireless Adapter]

For what it's worth: For me (XPS 13 9360, QHD, i7, 16 GB, Killer WiFi), external screens are perfectly stable, even with wireless being on relatively high throughput load, albeit not high power (energy) load.
I am connecting both HDMI and DisplayPort displays, each with cheap native USB-C adapters (i.e. through Thunderbolt). I also have full success with a Dell DA200, through its built-in HDMI graphics adapter.

Dear forum,  yesterday I bought my new ThinkPad t470. While everything else is working fine, the notebook seems not to be able to detect my external monitor (ThinkVision t2424p), when connecting it via a VGA to HDMI adapter. This setup flawlessly worked with my last notebook. Regardless whether I try to connect the monitor when Windows is already running or when I boot into Windows with the monitor already connected, the monitor doesn't show up in the screen resolutions settings nor does there appear an additional device in the device manager.  Do you know what the problem might be? The apater works fine when used with a different Notebook. Thank you very much, EBM

I have a Dell XPS 13, model 9350 (released Fall 2015), with the matte 1080p display (non-touch).  It has the new USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 port to connect to external monitors.  It requires an adapter to connect the USB-C port to HDMI inputs on external monitors
I have purchased two different USB-C to HDMI adapters and have tried connecting both to my relatively new LG LA6900 1080p HDTV as well as an older 1080p computer monitor, both with HDMI inputs.  Regardless of which adapter or external display I use, the colors come out washed out with very poor contrast when I export to the displays.  Regular greens and blues become neon, the whites are so bright they wash out all detail, browns are a light yellow, etc.  In general, the contrast and colors are so off that the external displays are pretty much unusable.
I have used both of these monitors as external displays for several other laptops with no problems.  I never have to adjust the monitors’ settings or the computers’ settings.  With the Dell, I have tried every imaginable adjustment on the monitors.  I have also used Windows 10’s color calibration tool.  I have also played around with the display driver’s settings. I also tried using several different HDMI cables. NOTHING fixes the bad contrast and washed out colors.
By process of elimination I know, therefore, that the problem lies in the Dell.  I have spent hours on the phone with Dell tech support.&... Read more

Answer:Dell XPS 13 9350 improper contrast / colors via HDMI on external display

Regarding the notebook, am I correct in understanding that the color problem only appears on your two external monitors and not on the LCD of the notebook itself? If this is correct then I don’t suggest reinstalling video drivers, if the LCD has a good display the drivers aren’t going to be the problem.
Have you tried other connections than thunderbolt to HDMI? Does the TV and monitor have Display port, standard VGA or DVI connections that you can try different Adapters with?  I certainly understand how you may not have these extra adapters lying around but if possible, this may be a way to see if it’s a problem with the type of adapters you are using, or a problem with any type of adapters.  You mentioned you have tested both displays on other notebooks, where you using thunderbolt to HDMI adapters on these other notebooks?
I mention power options on a lot of my posts but with notebooks you can’t emphasize it enough, I certainly suggest testing with the AC adapter connected to the notebook, and the Windows Power options plan set to High Performance and check to see if that makes a difference.
I don’t know if I suggest a service right now, especially if I am correct in understanding that the image on the LCD is fine but it may eventually be something to try. I will shoot you a DM to get your information if this turns out to be a suitable option.

hello friends DELL users, can you help me? As I am getting older my eyes and neck are not in good condition. I decided to buy DELL monitor - Dell P2217H Professional and I realized there is no HDMI or DISPLAYPORT at my laptop. I bought port replicator DELL - Dell USB-C (M) na HDMI 2.0 (F).
Since I connected all above mentioned devices, my laptop went crazy. No chance to make it sleep and if I switch it off and on, it will not recognize being connected to external monitor. Sometimes laptop does recognize external monitor, but only duplicate the screen. Any advises pls?
Dell CS did not help so much. They sent technician to change MB and it is the same. I reinstalled WIN 10 (factory reset) and the problem persists.
Thanks a lot,

I bought an USB-C to HDMI adapter cable to connect my Dell XPS 9350 to an external monitor (Dell U2414H).
I connect my laptop with adapter via USB-C, the HDMI port of adapter with HDMI cable and the HDMI cable with the external monitor. After that, the external monitor detected the laptop but it displays error message like that "There are no signal from your computer. Please press any key to wake up it".
My laptop still running, I also changed mode to duplicate or external screen and update all drivers but nothing change.
I checked the Intel Graphic Setting, it also detected the external monitor.
Please see attached images for more information and help me to fix it.

Dear all,
Wonder if you can help me solve a problem. I have just received an XPS13-9350 from the Outlet last week. It was certified refurbished.
I've tried to connect a VGA monitor to it via a USB-C to HDMI, then HDMI to VGA cable. The HDMI to VGA cable works perfectly on my Inspiron 15. The setup also works if I full power down the XPS13, attach USB-C to HDMI to VGA to monitor, and then boot up. The external monitor then works almost perfectly (with the exception of Netflix's video player which makes it flicker blue - Youtube and local video are completely fine).
What I cannot do is plug in this monitor whilst the XPS13 is on already - which is inconvenient as I move on and off desk a lot, and powering down the computer every time is unhelpful. Oddly, the monitor will also not be recognised if I simply Restart from Windows. I have to fully power down and plug everything in before switching the computer on again.
I have updated BIOS, video card and Thunderbolt drivers since and none of these has solved the problem. My system info is:
DELL XPS13-9350
Windows 10
Core i7-6560U, Intel Iris 540 graphics
8GB RAM, 256GB SSD.

I bought a Dell XPS 13 9350 in December and I wanted to connect it to an external monitor via the thunderbolt port. I bought an type c to hdmi adapter off amazon and it connects. (Actually bought 2 and the problem persists). But occasionally both my screen and laptop will turn black then back on again. This causes my video that i'm playing to either freeze/crash (netflix/youtube) which is SUPER annoying. It goes from occasional to quite often. It's really random.

My drivers are up to date, cable is new and the monitor is new from boxing day.

Any help is appreciated :)

When I connect my Dell XPS 13 9350 laptop with QHD display to an external monitor through the DA200 USB-C to HDMI connector the external monitors flicker constantly (laptop is fine-no flickering). Sometimes it works for like an hour then starts to flicker or longer so its not consistent. Below are the troubleshooting steps Dell has walked me through (including sending me a new DA200 part) to no avail:
- Dell has sent me a new DA200 USB C to HDMI part
- They have upgraded the Thunderbolt drivers and all other relevant drivers to latest ones (as of June 15 2016)
- I have tried on different monitors (5-6) and tried different HDMI cables.
Dell doesnt seem to know what to do now. THey have refunded my DA200 part purchase and told me to buy a separate HDMI to USB-C cable to test. If that fails it seems they will replace the motherboard. They say it could be an issue with the external monitors not being compatible with QHD, but this is not documented anywhere (they admit) and I havent heard anyone else having this problem on the internet and surprised every single person using this setup has QHD external monitors. This is an unworkable situation for me as I work in PC labs all day connected to external monitors.
Any advice?

My xps 13 9350 laptop screen is just blank but when I hook up an external monitor it shows everything. I went to my display settings and it doesn't even recognize a second display, for some reason it thinks the external monitor is the main screen. When I click "detect" it doesn't detect a second display.
I have booted in safe mode and everything works on the actual laptop but otherwise it only boots with a an external display.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, all, I have a Dell XPS 15 laptop and recently bought a Asus MB169B external USB monitor.  When I plug the monitor in, the laptop monitor (not the external monitor) flickers about every half second.  If I unplug it, it stops.  I upgraded my video driver to no avail.
Is it simply a power supply issue (the external monitor  does not have a power cord)?  Anything I can do?  It does it even if I have the laptop plugged in and charging.
*something interesting - I just discovered if I duplicate the display and not extend the flickering goes away...but that kind of defeats the point of a dual monitor for me.
Thanks.

Hi all,

I am currently experiencing flickering on my external monitor, connected via VGA from my laptop--flickering like a low refresh rate even though it is at 60 Hz. I have a Sony Vaio, model vpcsa490x. The laptop has switchable graphics cards and when I switch into the Intel 3000, there is no flickering. The flickering is only when I am using the Radeon 6630M leading me to believe its the graphics card's fault? I have the latest drivers installed so I don't know how to fix this.

Thanks for any help

Hello,

I have always used an external monitor when using windows vista and now that i have upgraded to windows 7 when i plug in my external monitor it flashes on and off. I have changed the refresh rate on the monitor and all it does is change how fast the external monitor flashes. Also, I had this problem when using windows vista and I changed a setting in windows task scheduler and it fixed it. Tried doing the same thing in 7 and the problem is still there. In addition, I tried using a different monitor cable and the problem is still there. If anyone has any solutions please please let me know.

I have an HP LP3065 30 inch external monitor, 2560x1600, that I'd like to drive off my T500. I am now on my second accell display-port to dual link dvi adapter and am still getting periodic blackouts of the monitor which last less than a second. At first I thought it was due to insufficient power to the adapter provided through the usb port, as has been reported in various places, so I got a high powered usb hub with ac adapter. Didn't help. Accell said it must be a lenovo problem and that they had "reported" the issue to lenovo. I exchanged the adapter for a new one on the off chance it might be a manufacturing issue but the new one is just the same. Has anyone gotten this configuration to work properly? If so, what dp-dual link dvi adapter are you using? Any special adjustments to your settings? I have the ATI Mobility Radeon 3650 card. All drivers are current as is the BIOS.

Answer:Monitor flickering with T500 with accell dual-link-dp adapter

Hi greigite,

Welcome to the Lenovo forum!

Is the Accell B087B-002B the adapter you are using? I haven't used such an adaper, but it looks very nice. It gets excellent reviews on Amazon, though at least one reviewer recommended connecting it to a powered USB hub to eliminate display flickering. You've done that already -- suppose you could try a different powered USB hub on the off chance that the first one is defective, but that seems unlikely.

You might have a look at the power-saving features of your ATI video card. I think you can right-click on your desktop to start "ATI Catalyst Control Center" (if not, think you can find it in the Start menu). One of the panels of CCC lets you adjust power saving profiles, and whether to reduce the vertical refresh rate below the usual 60 Hz. You could try turning the vertical refresh rate reduction feature off, and maybe try some different power-saving profiles.

How often does the flickering occur? Like, once every 20 minutes, or less often?

Best regards,
Frank

Hi all,

I bought Satellite U400-157 laptop from week ago. When I connect the laptop to external moniter with charger plugged in the external monitor is flicker (display a horizontal line). When I unplugged the charger the flickering is disappear.

I tried the following possibilities with no solution:

1. connect the laptop to different monitors (BENQ 20", ViewSonic 17", and old VGA monitor)
2. using both 3 and 2 connectors power cable for both labtop and monitor.
3. using thicker VGA cable.
4. using another charger.
5. finally I went to the seller and ask him to try another laptop with same model and the shock was it has the same problem.

So can I consider this is a DEFECT in this model or there is a solution for this problem?

Answer:External monitor flickering on Satellite U400-157

Hi

Hmm? I doubt this issue could be related to the U400?
I use the U400 too and I?ve connected it to the external Samsung LCD monitor using the HDMI port and the screen does not flicker.

I have also found this thread about the similar issue with Tecra M5
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=146910

The guy means that this could be also a notebook problem but after several tastings, he founds out that power cable that came with the external monitor was dodgy.

However, maybe your ASP should check the notebook and the hardware?

Hi,  I have a Lenovo Z50-70 laptop(GeForce 840m(4gb) and i7).  When I plug in my external monitor using VGA cable, it starts flickering and looks like its trying to auto adjust every 3-4 seconds. I have latest Intel HD and Nvidia display drivers installed. I tried to attach the same monitor to my old laptop and everything works fine, so its not cable or monitor problem. Also tried to remove laptop charger, changing display settings etc., and the problem still remains. No idea what else can I do to prevent this permanently.Interesting part: When I launch any game then flickering goes away. When I exit the game, flickering comes back. Its so weird. Thank you in advance for your help.

Answer:Lenovo Z50-70 external monitor flickering issue.

Check the output frequencies the monitor/display is getting. Either they're exceeding the display capability and/or the refresh freq is off, 60HZ is the norm for flat panel displays while some will handle higher up to 75HZ but only lower will be visible to the eye. The resolution may also be wrong as it may not be detected to set the correct resolution for that display as well.

Hi

Does this also happen on battery mode or only with connected AC/DC adaptor? I have founded a similar thread here in forum that the problem was the AC/DC adaptor due a grounding issue.

Furthermore use a high quality cable. You can get it from your local computer dealer.

Hey guys,I've been a lurker on here for awhile now and finally decided to post. I have had my HP Pavilion laptop (Windows 7) for 3-4 years now and just recently decided to hook it up to an external monitor to help with home productivity (it's only a 13'' laptop so it was about time). I took my old desktop Dell monitor and plugged it to the laptop via the monitor's VGA cable. However, recently the external monitor (which I have designated as my main display) started flickering for no particular reason. I updated my driver and then googled this issue online. The only real answer I have found is a "grounding" issue that does not pertain to me since my laptop continues to flicker even when it is not plugged in to battery power. So, I went out to Best Buy and bought a new VGA cable thinking that perhaps the cable was old and needed to be replaced. Although the new cable initially seemed to fix the issue, the external monitor still flickers at times, sometimes every few minutes and at other times several times per minute. Now, I just purchased a new 23" HP external monitor and although the flickering is less frequent, it still continues. I tried using a power surge and separating the power outlets for each plug (i.e., the plug's of my laptop and the external monitor) but that didn't seem to do the trick. I also tried using an HDMI cable but to no avail. Also looked at the refresh rate and I can't go below 60 HZ for the external monitor, so I seem to be fine there. Both the laptop and... Read more

Answer:External Monitor Flickering When Connected to HP Laptop

What does no avail on the hdmi mean? It did not work or it still flickers? Do you have the laptop set to only put out to the external monitor or is the built-in display also being driven by the video card? In other words, how exactly do you have the display set up? I think you are saying you have both screen displaying an image? Are you extending to the external monitor or mirroring the built-in screen? I know the external is the primary monitor but how are you using the built-in display? I would think you would have the best luck setting it to display only to the external. The other constant in the equation is the electrical system. Have the monitors always been plugged into the same outlet? Monitors can be very sensitive to electrical anomalies. I see you use a "surge" (supressor) but the inexpensive ones do not really smooth out power; you have to use a ups/battery backup for that. Is the wall power outlet a 2-prong or a three prong? Have you tried moving the whole setup to another room or another location? Does the built-in screen ever flicker?

Any monitor is flickering on my laptop, and no, I have not got a HDMI output on this one.

Which means this: http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=150197 does not apply.

Shall I just return it? Is there a fix, or should I get my money back?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite U400-15Q: external monitor flickering

Hi!

Did you really try all instructions posted by Haider?
I mean another VGA cable, AC/DC adaptor, monitors and so far.

Try to update the BIOS and the display driver. Both you can find on the Toshiba website:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers

If it doesn?t work you should go an ASP. The technicians can help you to solve this problem.
I?m pretty sure that this issue can be solved because a friend of me has a Satellite U400 too and he doesn?t have any problems by using an external monitor. :)

Hi, I have a Lenovo T520 with Nvidia NVS 4200M with the latest driver installed. I pluged both a VGA external monitor, then removed it and pluged a newer Displayport monitor and both monitors flicker. Thank youFrançois

Answer:External monitor flickering issues on T520

Try going to the device manager (windows key + X then Device Manager), under Monitors right click the monitor listed and select update driver software, then select to search automatically online for the update. Do this for all displays listed there. It should automatically update the actual monitor drivers. If this doesn't work, go into your graphic settings and change the refresh rate of your monitors to 60hz (or 59hz).Hope this helps.

Me and 2 co-workers got new computers, E7250.
Together with the E-Port Plus II docking station. (PR02X)
Problem is that one of the external monitors keeps flickering to black, as if loss of signal after a while.
Docking out and in again solves it, or removing the DVI-cable and putting it in again.I run 3 external monitors + internal.
Co-workers runs 3 external only.Same on all, one of the external monitors flickers.I have the latest BIOS, latest driver for GPU and Chipset. This does not help.Any suggestions?

I bought a X230t recently and a Samsung SA450 Monitor. I use the X230t in a docking station and attach the monitor to the station. The problem I have now is that on the external monitor, there is flickering and lines appearing (usually slightly darker and brighter lines going from bottom left to top right at angles between 1° and 45°), similar to when an old CRT monitor was not tuned well or the frequency was slightly off. It gets worse if I attach the monitor to the X230t directly. The only way I found up to now to workaround this is a rather cumbersome procedure:Start up the x230t in the Docking station (I normally use hibernation). Watch how it flickers. Then hibernate. Undock the x230t from the station. Detach power cable from the docking station (that may not be needed, I have to test that). Start up X230t again. Once Windows 7 login screen appears, put it back in the docking station (and attach power cord). It will not work however to skip the first part - so I have to start up the x230t twice from hibernation - once in the dock and then again away from the dock - to get rid of this effect. This is extremely annoying. I already tried to attach the Monitor in a different power outlet than the docking station or to keep the docking station detached from power, I tried different VGA cables, rebooting the x230t while in the dock - all without success. I could try to find a way to connect the monitor via the display port with a DVI-adapter instead of VGA (costs about 40-50 ... Read more

Hi support!

I own a Portege R600 13Z and a ASUS VW224 VGA monitor. Native Resolution is 1680x1050 and connection directly over VGA cable (don't know whether there's a docking station). GPU driver date is 31.03.2010 version 8.15.10.2104 (the newest I believe).

The problem is that the monitor is flickering. The darker the displayed area the stronger the flickering is perceived. It is a "horizontal flickering", as if horizontal lines are chasing each other up and down the screen. It's very annoying.

Since neither the notebook monitor itself nor the ASUS Monitor with another computer show any flickers I believe the problem is rooted in the interaction of the described setup. On the monitor itself I can set different settings. Linked to the problem might be Clock 50 and Phase 54.

Windows tells me in the monitor config that refresh rate is 60. However, Clock and refresh rate can be set to the same without any change.

The meaning of phase I don't know.
Any ideas to solve the issue?

Cheers!

I think it?s grounding issue.
Please check if the flickering would be available using only battery power.

I read a lot about such symptoms on external monitors.
In most cases the usage of 3 cord power cable would solve this problem.

In the last few months I have purchased the ProBook 655, UltraSlim Docking Station, and two monitors all from HP.com.  I am trying to connect the monitors from the Docking station's DisplayPort to the Monitors VGA port.  The screen flicker, shake, and go black then come back on again.  I have updated the graphics card. Updated the firmware for the Docking Station with several different updates (SP69276.exe, SP74203.exe, and SP75855.exe). All this resulted in absolutely no change. Also, tried 4 different cables.  If I undock the computer and use the displayport on the side of the computer the monitors work perfectly.  So I don't think that it has to do with the graphics card.  The VGA to VGA cable between the docking station and monitor works great too.  But I really desire to run to full size monitors and there is only one VGA port on the docking station. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try next?  I am finding it impossible to even find a phone number to call HP to see if they can help.

I am using a usb-c to hdmi adapter to output to a TV but the black levels look washed out. I had no issues with the same TV and a previous laptop that had a dedicated hdmi port. In the intel graphics settings usually there is a "quantization range" setting to change color space between RGB Limited and RGB Full if the intel graphics is driving the hdmi port. However, in this case, there is no hdmi port but instead a usb-c to hdmi adapter, thus the quantization range setting is missing. I've had the same issue before on a previous laptop with usb-c. I've tried installing thel atest drivers, including the non-validated ones from the intel website, but none give me the quantization range setting.

Hey, I use a HP Envy x-360 m6 Convertible laptop running windows 10. I tried connecting it to my old ASUS VH192D monitor using a HDMI to VGA converter (the laptop doesn't have VGA port and the monitor doesn't have a HDMI port).  When I first connected the monitor to my laptop both the laptop and the monitor adapted to their native resolutions and were working fine. I tried to change the ASUS monitor's resolution to 1080 (native resolution 1366x768) which threw me an error saying OUT OF RANGE.  I then changed the resolution back to its dafault value but the error message was still being displayed. I hard reset the monitor and also tried a software reset. Both were unsuccessful.  On doing some research, I found that there could be numerous causes to my problem. I checked all the possibilities but I still can't find a solution. The first thing I checked was the cable and the adapter. I plugged the cable, adapter and monitor to all my other computers and it seemed to work fine. I then checked if all my drivers were up to date. I updated my display drivers individually (though they were already up to date) and also restarted my computer numerous times. As I was trying to solve my issue I noticed that my laptop no longer recognised the second monitor. Is there something I can do, or is it just a problem because of incompatibility with the older monitor.

I have connected via the USB type C adapter to a Dell U2410. However the connection appears to be intermittent, as if port requires a timing response peridically to maintain the connection. It appears as a loss of HDMI connection on the monitor approx. 1/minute (for a about 2-3 seconds), then recovers without intervention.

Hi,

Recently purchased the XPS13 9350  (6th gen intel  i5). Right from the start the  computer had an issue with a flickering screen. Sometimes it doesn't flicker, sometimes it is very bad. I have run the diagnostic tests for video card, motherboard and screen, and it all passes.    I have also opened a dell support ticket and no responses yet.  All the drivers have been upgraded to what is currently available on the dell website.

Any thoughts  would be greatly appreciated :)

I met the same problem. I also updated the current drivers to the latest, but sometimes the flickering still happen.
I noticed that that flickering happened when the processor is in a heavy load, so probobly maybe due to the energy management drive or something. Waiting for a solution!

I have a Lenovo G50 running Win8 32bit. I have a VGA to HDMI adapter for the monitor but it's not working. To rule out any issue with the 2nd monitor, I was able to get it to work by disconnecting the VGA cable from the first monitor and connecting it to the 2nd monitor. But again, no luck using the HDMI port with a VGA to HDMI adapter. So I'm fresh out of ideas. Had anyone been able to resolve this successfully with this setup? And if so, how? Hi Community,
My XPS 13 9350 (4k touchscreen) continues to have issues with the screen flickering.  The screen flickering occurs in one of two ways.
Temporary Flickering.  Screen flickers off and on quickly, twice every second.  Turning the computer to sleep and back on again can fix this issue.
Permanent flickering.  Screen flickers off and on quickly, twice every second.  When the screen turns black a weird horizontal bar with different colors displays across the middle of the screen.  After a few seconds the screen stabilizes but then flashes again and repeats the pattern.  Turning the computer the sleep and back on doesn't normally resolve the issue.  I have to turn off the computer completely wait 5 to 10 minutes before turning it back on.  This occurs when I using the laptop on my lap or during my 1 hour bus commute to college.

I tried updating the video card drivers.  Currently it's 20.19.15.4444 (Intel 520)
BIOS:  1.3.3
Updated all drivers via the "Dell Update" software client.
Disable Panel Self Refresh: Via Intel HD control panel
Changed resolutions:  1080p
Changed Refresh rate: 60p Hz -> 48 Hz
Attached an external monitor via dell TB15.  Mix results, the display shows other issues which I believe are most due to the poor TB15 dock than the XPS itself.
Any ideas?

Does HDMI needed to be unplugged and plug back in for it to broadcast a signal from Laptop to an external monitor? Because this seems to be my case at times.

Answer:Laptop connecting to an external Monitor via HDMI

It shouldn't. Does the problem occur during bootup, or while in use?

Also, if it occurs after letting the PC sleep or hibernation, it could be a hardware or OS/software issue.

Hi there.

I have this laptop some years now and works good. I'd like to put another screen on to my laptop so I would have 2. The laptop's and the new one. The problem is, that I connected it with a screen with a 22' 1900-1080 resoluton, and the big screen was not as I wanted to be. It had big big Windows. It was saying to me that the big monitor couldnt catch the max resolution.

Any ideas on what should I do?

My A100-906 from what I know has a VGA input. Am I able to add HDMI on to it?

Thanks in advance, panagiotis.

Answer:Satellite A100-806 - Can I add HDMI for external monitor?

Hi lualua,

> It had big big Windows
I think that?s because you don?t use the native screen resolution of external monitor. If the monitor supports 1080p screen resolution you should set it for external monitor. So right click on desktop and choose ?screen resolution?. Select the second monitor and set 1920x1080 screen resolution.

> My A100-906 from what I know has a VGA input. Am I able to add HDMI on to it?
It?s no input port, the VGA port on your computer is *output*. Furthermore there are no adapters from HDMI to VGA so you have to use the VGA port on your notebook for external monitor.

I have a HP Spectre 13 Ultrabook (Model No. F5C93EA#ABU) originally shipped with Windows 8.1 64 bit.About 2 months ago it was updated to Windows 10 64-bit with no great problems (update in place).Recently I observed that the external HDMI port no longer works when trying to connect to a TV. I have since tested many combinations of external monitors and cables together with other laptops and proved the problem is with this laptop, We have updated windows 10 to the latest aniversary update to attempt to fix the problem and have also uninstalled and reinstalled the Intel Gaphics Driver which is currently at version 10.18.15.4248. This the latest driver is as posted at the HP website and tends to the be the version that is also automatically installed via windows update.  I notice that actual baseline release date of 10.18.15.4248 is August last year. Intel have many later non-OEM versions but this is the latest HP OEM version. I am at a loss on how to fix the problem and have had to resort to a plugabble USB3 to HDMI adapter to provide external monitor support.

yes it will work at that resolutions. It is actually 2048 x 1152, but that resolution is not commonly used, so most references would state either 1920 x 1200 or 1920 x 1080.

I have a Yoga 2 Pro, and I have a Samsung 28" 4k monitor model #u28d590d supports [email protected] over display port and supports 4k @30hz over hdmi. I bought what I believe to a high speed micro hdmi cable might not be.. and could be the problem. But to my understanding is the yoga 2 pro with the i7-4500u processor it should support 4k @ 30hz over the hdmi 1.4a port? Can anyone confirm this? I had the external monitor do some wierd flickering at 4k @ 24 hz, but thats about it. no stable image.

I recently purchased the E93z and am trying to hook up an external monitor.  According to the manual, if I have a HDMI monitor, which I bought purposely for this, that all I need to do is hook the monitor up to the HDMI out port on the Ez93. I have tried this and it does not work. The monitor is recognized on the computer (says generic), but the screen on the external monitor shows squiggly lines and continuously moves.  Any help and/or feedback would be appreciated as I'm having a problem getting through Lenovo's phone support center for help and their online chat reps are unable to help.  All I am wanting to find out is how to add an HDMI/VGA monitor to the ThinkCentre 93z. Thank you in advance. Missy

I'm trying to connect a laptop to an external monitor using an HDMI to DVI-I cable adapter.
I first used a Gateway FPD1760. Windows did recognise it but when I used Windowskey+P the monitor stayed in standby mode, even when I chose to extend the displays. The external monitor was there, it just wasn't displaying anything. I then installed a few updates [sliverlight, security essentials and Intel HD3000 update] and lo and behold the monitor came to life and all was well.

After a restart however the monitor again refused to display. In the Intel gfx properties the monitor is recognised as a secondary display. I've tried another Compaq 7020 but that's the same. They both work using the VGA port.

I've tried the function keys like LCD and the change monitor ones but that either changes the built-in monitor's resolution [to the screen ratio of what the external should be 4:3] or it just goes blank. Again the external just stays in standby.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Laptop HDMI to DVI-I external monitor - no signal

Did you try setting the external monitor's resolution to something smaller? might be that its too big for the screen, for some odd reason.

I have a U400 laptop that is not working with an external PC monitor through HDMI.  Note that I have no problem connecting to a TV monitor using HDMI. The problem is only with a PC monitor through HDMI. The laptop connects to the same monitor without problems using VGA [using a USB 3.0 - VGA adapter], but that is not good enough.   Under device manager, I see that my laptop came with 2 display drivers: AMD Radeon. HD 6470M and Intel HD Graphic Family. The drivers are updated.  Any idea what is going on here? Please advise.  Thank you.  Sid

I have Lenovo B540 All-In-One (Windows 8) whose monitor is cracked and the screen is black. I'm trying to still use the computer or at least access the hard drive by attaching a second monitor through the HDMI Out connect slot in the back. So I purchased the "DVI-D to HDMI (or vice versa)" cable (Dynex brand) for $40 from BestBuy and made the connection to my DVI monitor.

Well, Lenovo turns on but is not recognizing the second monitor! Should it automatically recognize the second monitor or are there some steps involved like pressing down on certain function keys (like you would in laptops)? I've perused Lenovo's hardware support manual but they don't explain proper steps.

Does anyone know what the proper steps are when the original monitor is not working? I know for sure the computer itself is working; it's making all the right Windows start-up noise. No, the computer is not passworded so it should go in straight.

Would it be easier to connect to the TV via HDMI? Would I then need HDMI cables?

Thanks everyone for any suggestions you might have to offer.

I was having sleep problems and after messing around with different settings and configurations I finally found the problem. If I have an external monitor plugged into my laptop via HDMI the computer refuses to go to sleep. As soon as I tell it to go to sleep it will immediately wake up after a few seconds. I also have an type-c to VGA adapter that does not have this problem so its not a general external monitor issue its only with the HDMI port.

Hi,
Before I wander off to buy a MiniDisplayPort to HDMI adapter and an HDMI adapter:Can someone first-hand confirm or disconfirm if the OptiPlex 9030 can be used as an external/second monitor via the HDMI IN (for my MacBook Pro/in general)?
According to ZDNet (on the 9030) it is possible:
"...plug in an external video source (via HDMI)..."
www.zdnet.com/product/dell-optiplex-9030/
According to this forum (but on the 9010) it is not possible:
"...I would like to inform you that both VGA and HDMI ports on the system are TV out connection... you won't be able to use this system as display only for a different system or laptop...."
en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19508673
Is it that the 9010 does not have HDMI IN and the 9030 does have HDMI IN (and hence the 9030) does work as an external monitor?
Thank you in advance for your help!

Answer:Can I Use the OptiPlex 9030 as an (External) Monitor via HDMI IN?

The setup guide shows you have one 19-pin HDMI-input port (#11) on back of the monitor so you should be able to connect an external video source, assuming the source puts out a compatible HDMI signal.
You may need to use the On-Screen Display (OSD) buttons (#6) to configure the display to accept the signal from the HDMI-input. The setup guide doesn't list the OSD options so you may have to figure those out yourself. The OSD buttons are on the right edge of the screen just below the optical drive.

I have a Yoga 11s that started having hdmi connection issues about a year ago and has recently quit connecting to an external monitor via HDMI completely. We tried upgrading to Windows 10 to see if that would overwrite any software issues - no luck. The HDMI port actually appears loose. I did an extensive search of the forum and found posts that recommended cutting down the rubber around the base of the hdmi cord - tried that and at least I had a little activitiy - in the upper right hand corner of the external monitor up popped a box that says DVI then VGA then HDMI - but then says No Signal. Tried the graphics card update recommended on a post from long time ago and a popup indicated I had a newer version already installed. I have taken it to a laptop repair place - said they couldn't get parts from Lenovo. I found an "authorized" Lenovo repair shop locally - when I called they said they only work on business machines Called Lenovo and they told me to take it to Best Buy - however since I purchased this directly from Lenovo, Best Buy said they can't work on it. I would rather not send it into Lenovo because they tried to charge my hubby hundreds of dollars when his 15 day brand new laptop quit working, claiming damage - luckily extensive pictures taken and dated prior to sending it in thwarted that attempt at extortion. Does anyone have any suggestions? I need to be able to do presentations and work remotely with this so it is no... Read more

Yes check device manager and see what display adapter you have. If it is Microsoft Basic, you will not have any advanced function like HDMI output. In other words, you might need a video driver.

There were a lot of very old posts on this topic but no fresh ones, and hardware and software have moved on.  But the problem remains! So I am starting a new thread for a current solution. Trying to connect new ASUS monitor to my HP Envy laptop using Windows 10. I can use an adapter off a USB port into the monitor's VGA input, but I would like to do HDMI to HDMI (Monitor has HDMI input, Computer has only HDMI, no other outputs except USB.) When I try to do this (of course monitor then is set for HDMI input), the computer does not discover the monitor. It also does not see the speakers in the audio settings. What should I do?

Answer:HP Envy laptop does not recognize external monitor in HDMI-H...

Check the device manager under display adapters. Sometimes on a Windows 10 update you get Microsoft Basic which will not activate the HDMI port and you need to get the correct driver for the video. It would also help if we had the full model number or Product Number.

Hi Everyone,
every time I plug in an external monitor to the HDMI port it flickers, but flickers the screen goes black and then displays a screen. There is no pattern to how it flickers, eg, hitting the cable or typing on the keyboard.
This occurs whether using an adapter converting to Video cable or simple a HDMI Cable. I have now used multiple monitors to verify it's not a monitor issue.
Any ideas as to what to do?

Hi all, I've recently purchased a HP15-AYO56TX laptop (i7 2.5GHz, 8Gb RAM, 2Tb HD model with both AMD Raedon R7 M340 4GBVRAM and Intel HD 520 graphics) and am curious what's the maximum resolution I can run on an external monitor via HDMI? Have been eyeing off a 21:9 ultra wide screen monitor with a 2560x1080 resolution which would be great with Revit and AutoCAD, but I believe some variants of HDMI only support up to 1920x1080 resolution? Anyone able to confirm? Cheers, Ben.

Hi, I notice that I get a BSOD whenever I turn on my computer with an external monitor attached. Also have the same experience when running the windows experience index with an external monitor. W530 with K1000 video card, fully updated bios and nvidia graphics drivers (and all other lenovo drivers). Also tried updating to latest video drivers from nvidia site, still same problem. Anyone else experiencing the same thing? Suggestions?

Answer:BSOD on boot with external monitor plugged in to HDMI

We too are having issues with 3 W530s when connecting to any sort of external device, whether it is a monitor or projector, VGA, DVI or HDMI. We receive the nvlddmkm.sys blue screen upon connection of the device if the laptop is already running or shortly after login if we boot the machine up with the peripheral connected. We have updated BIOS, the nVidia driver, the Intel chipset driver and ran the computer in all display modes (generic, discrete and Optimus) and still get the error. Also noticed that when the Blue Screen occurs, there is increased fan speed on the exhaust and an acrid/ozone smell.

I currently have a laptop with a busted screen with HDMI as the only other output signal. I've also been experience freezes and hangs so I want to try and use the Reset or Refresh options of Win 8.1. However those only seem to display in the laptop screen. Is it possible to still access these settings? I've done some Googling and there were ideas of changing signal output priority and tearing down the laptop to disconnect the actual cable.

The y510p (single 750m version) outputs a black screen to Asus PB278Q monitor over HDMI, at any resolution, in any duplicate/extend/only mode using both Windows 7 and Windows 8. Other monitors work fine. This monitor supports 2560x1440, however even lower resolutions produce only a black screen. The monitor model name and supported resolution is recognized by Windows, and the monitor also recognizes that a signal is present over HDMI. However the screen is black, and the monitor, while connected and active, freezes to some extent as the menu buttons do not function until the signal is removed (removing the cable or deactivating the second display output). A theory I have is that the issue is with the Intel HD 4600, and if it were possible to force the use of the nVidia 750m in a single GPU setup then it may work. There are no BIOS options to this effect and the "preferred GPU" selection in the nVidia Control Panel has no effect outside of 3D applications. My colleague has a y500 with a dual 650m SLI setup and the monitor works fine for him. I have read that the SLI models use only the two nVidia GPUs and completely disable the Intel. Is it possible to also disable the Intel when only a single 750m is present, and/or is it possible to purchase a second 750m for the ultrabay separately?

I have a V570 running Windows 10. I just got a new Dell U2415 monitor, and I can't get my laptop or the monitor to recognize that they're connected. The monitor recognizes and displays my girlfriend's Chromebook, so the monitor isn't defective. My laptop outputs to my TV fine, so I don't think it's a hardware issue. I've tried different HDMI cables, I rolled back the graphics driver on my laptop, I even tried using an adapter to connect to the monitor's DisplayPort slot, but it won't detect the monitor and the monitor won't recognize that anything is connected. None of the Windows graphics settings helped, nor did the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel (it won't even let me choose Multiple Monitor mode). Any ideas?

I have a lenovo b570e laptop and am running Windows 8.1.

I recently bought a new monitor (ASUS ve248h) to use as a dual monitor along side my own laptop however upon connecting the HDMI cable with the monitor it doesn't appear to work. I have tried updating the drivers and the hdmi port does work while I am connecting to my LG tv using the hdmi port. I have used various cables including the one that connects it to the tv however so far without success.

I am a bit clueless as to why it would work with the tv and not the monitor also my brothers laptop (which has Ubuntu) does successfully connect to the monitor.

Any help would be much appreciated and Thanks in Advanced
