I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently purchased an X230 thinkpad.I am having some issues, specifically;a. the screen is a yellowy colour - this seems to only be at night, not during the day!b. the right click on the bottom of the touchpad does not work conistently - sometimes it acts like a left click instead of a right click - this is incovenient as i do a lot of editing work in WordI ran a Linux check and these issues did not occur - so I think it may be software related - I am using Windows 10 Pro.Does any one have suggestions?thanks

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (which I love dearly) and have a few question about ports and booting.  I would first like to verify that the port on the left side of the laptop directly above one of the USB ports is indeed an ExpressCard 54.  I have searched the web, but have yet to find a definite answer, and my user manual simply stated "ExpressCard."  Furthermore, I would like to know if it is possible to boot an operating system from said port using an ExpressCard 34 SSD (64GB).  I have the intention of installing openSUSE 12.3 to the potential SSD and be able to boot from it.  I greatly appreciate any help.  I  would post an image of said port, but I am being told the image file is much too large.

Answer:Lenovo ThinkPad X230 Expresscard Help

Yes, this slot is indeed for the Expresscard and no, unfortunately you cannot boot from it.

I have a Lenovo X230, running Kubuntu 14.04. When I disconnect the slice battery at the bottom the system resets, it's very annoying. What's worse is that it seems like jostling the system, also can cause it to power cycle. I don't really have a need to remove the slice battery very often, but essentially if I put the laptop into standby, and put it in by laptop knapsack, the system is off after I get where I'm going. Thoughts? I saw somewhere that allegedly, when you unlock the battery, some thinkpad utility gets notified to switch the power, I wonder if the hotplug is a software only solution, and not doable in standby. Steve Ramage

I have a 4 year old Lenovo Thinkpad X230 computer.  Since I upgraded to Windows 10 (two years ago?) my computer has randomly shut off with no warning.  There doesn't seem to be a pattern with regard to when or how this happens.  The computer starts normally every time.  This can happen upwards of 5 or 6 times in an hour (although sometimes it can go several days without shutting off). In the last year (since June 2016), the computer has been evaluated by three different technicians on three different occasions (June, October, January).  Each found no hardware issues, no issues with fuzz/dust, no obvious software issues, no malware or other viruses.  Personally, I have explored the answer on the internet and fiddled with the settings relating to sleep mode (among other suggestions) and nothing seems to have worked.  I recently was advised to revert to the original windows 10, undoing all the updates and additional installations that I've put on the computer.  I did this, and miraculously it helped (although it still shut off twice since then.  This was in February).  In the last two weeks, I was forced to upgrade back to normal and the problem has returned.  Additionally, the first person who looked at my computer (back in June 2016), told me that this was aparently a common problem with Windows 10 and that the only way to fix it was to revert to Windows 8.   I would like to not have to do this, if poss... Hi, My Thinkpad X230 tablet screen is not truning on.  It just shows the dark blank screen. The power button is on, all other indicators are green.I have tried removing the battery, holding Fn button etc. Can someone help to resolve this issue please.. Thank You.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad X230 Tablet - Display Problem

If it is under warranty, call for service, rather than dealing with it. The first step is to unplug it and remove the battery. Press the power button 5 times, holding it for 10 seconds on the last push. Put it back together; plug it in, and try again.

Touch screen, pen, and usb/bluetooth imputs work fine but the trackpad stops working several seconds after bootup/log in. I've removed and reinstalled the latest lenovo trackpad drivers which fixes the problem for several seconds and then the trackpad/touch pad stop working again. After every restart again they work for a few seconds and then stop. Are there any other possible sollutions?

Answer:Lenovo X230 tablet Thinkpad/trackpad not functioning

welcome to the community!

please check to make sure your trackpad is not disabled in your bios.

for reference, on my t60p, i have the trackpad disabled in bios because i never use it ( trackpoint evangelist here ). regardless, when i'm at the windows 7 login screen, my trackpad is active. as soon as i'm logged in and i've got a windows desktop, the trackpad is inactive. i'm not sure why i have that small window where it works, but there it is, fwiw.

cheers.

Hello,  I'm having some trouble with turning on my laptop. The problem originally started when some keys on my keyboard stopped working. I cleaned the keys, restarted my laptop, tried a previous restore point and then did a hard reset after nothing worked to fix my laptop.  After hard resetting, I tried turning on my laptop and it did not turn on. So far, I've plugged in my laptop into the adaptor, plugged the adaptor directly into the wall outlet, and removed the battery and plugged in the laptop. The one thing I have noticed with my laptop is that when I plug in the adaptor, the battery and sleep lights turn on for a moment, then the sleep light turns off, and the battery light will stay on momentarily but then it will blink off after a few seconds. What else should I do? Thank you

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad x230 stuck on boot menu

I would need to see it to be sure, but my guess is that the hard disk was logically damaged.  That means the boot record or partition information was wiped out.  It could also be a disk hardware error.  Do you have a backup?

Hello. I have a Thinkpad X230. I'm trying to drive video to a Samsung LCD TV via the mini displayport, with a mini displayport  --> hdmi adaptor (i've tried two adaptors now). The X230 detects the the Samsung TV when connected, both in the Sound and in the Graphics Properties. You can hear the connect / see the PC screen flash when the cable is plugged in. Unfortunately I can't get any sound or video on the TV. (I just tried connecting to a Dell Monitor and was able to get it to work.) The TV takes HDMI from my Dell laptop just fine on the same cable/input to the TV.The other problem is that in trying to adjust settings, now when I plug in the HDMI cable via the adaptor, the PC screen goes blank, it seems to be trying to make the TV primary, and the TV is getting the signal, so I have to pull the cable out to get the PC display back. Any ideas on setting / adjustments? ThanksAlan

Dear Lenovo guys, I have been dealing with a lot of unpleasent phaenomena since the update to Windows 10 on my Thinkpad Yoga (20C0-S0AX00). 1. The Yoga randomly does not find external keyboard and mouse when connecting it to the docking station (and especially frequent if the the docking station receives power after connection)2. When starting to use the Yoga in Laptop mode on battery, at some point it stops recognizing trackpad and keyboard. The only solution is closing the laptop - putting it to sleep - and opening and restarting it again. This is incredibly annoying.3. HDMI audio is gone since the update4. I have now spend more than a day to update the bios on my Yoga to fix these issues.4.1. The bios update utility has never been working for my machine since I bought it 1.5 years ago. 4.2 There is not a word in the readme files how you proceed with bios update if you have a bitlocker encrypted main hard drive.4.3 Mannually flashing the bios produces many random error which are not explained anywhere:After finally figuring out that the security chip might need to be deactivated in the bios, to avoid the fatal error on the Bitlocker encryption, not a single tool finishes the update process but all simply start and freeze (flash2.exe and updtflsh.exe)phlash16.exe that I found on the web tells me bluntly "Platform Signature not found in the interface".Is the $0AGQ000.FL1 file from the GQET48WW Bios update not the correct file? Answer:Thinkpad Yoga S1 keyboard unresponsiveness and bios upate impossibilities

The bios update apparently did not work because I always hit "keep custom start up image" - "yes". Great. Hdmi Audio also finally works because I changed the sound format in the advanced options on the hdmi audio device from default to 16bit, 32000hz. I will keep reporting if the other bugs, i.e. keyboard responsiveness, are solved or not.

Hi All,I've bought LENOVO X230 THINKPAD TABLET, i7-3520M, MULTI-TOUCH on eBay, and I got it with a broken motherboard.  I couldn't turn it on when I opened the box, and I gave it to IBM's service in Israel. Now they just told me that they don't have the part, and they are waiting to get it from the US only next week. It means that I will use my NEW computer only 2 weeks after I got it!It relly make me feel very disappointed from Lenovo's quality! Does it make sense? I needed it for work and now I'm working with a terrible computer! How is it happen to a company like Lenovo that they sell a new expensive computer with a broken motherboard??? Don't they have a quality control ? Do I deserve a compensation?

Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2½" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2½" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

Two questions: I've been thinking about buying an X230 (or the X1 Carbon), but the more I look the more I think I should take advantage of the ability to upgrade the x230 with both more RAM and a WWAN-fitting SSD by buying the minimum specs available.  The tests I've seen have mostly been with the x230 with the i5 chip and an HDD.  When I compared the i5 and i7 chips (http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-3520M-vs-Intel-Core-i5-3320M) they seemed to be pretty similar.  Is the i5 sufficiently fast with an SSD or would I regret trying to be extra cheap.  Also, is it silly to get a model with an SSD drive already in it, if I'm going to get an mSATA drive anyway? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks,.

Answer:Thinkpad X230 i5 vs i7, HDD vs. SSD

I have an X230 with the i5 CPU and a 500Gb 7200-rpm hard drive. It is plenty fast to do anything I need including having 2 machines running on top of the Windows 8 host (3 separate machines all running at the same time). Even so, I can run anything else I want. It is certainly fast enough to work with an SSD. I did not do SSD because they are not big enough and are still subject to catastrophic failure (no gentle failure for SSD's).  .... JDH

Hello guys I am ready to order ThinkPad x230 from Lenovo.de but the only option for the battery is 29, 29+ and 29++. Will there be a problem or can I continue with the order?

Answer:Thinkpad X230 and 29++ battery

The ThinkPad X230 uses 44, 44+ or 44++ batteries. The 29 series batteries are only made for ThinkPad X220. The 29 batteries in the X230 will not charge, as it will be seen as NON-authentic battery. http://www.thinkscopes.com/29-29-or-29-batteries-in-the-thinkpad-x230/

I'm considering making the switch to a ThinkPad X230, but I need big storage space (right now I keep a HDD in the Ultrabay of my T420s).  Can anyone recommend some 512 GB SSD options?  I want quality and reliability and a good warranty.  I wish Lenovo offered one as I prefer to keep the all the parts backed by Lenovo, but in this case they offer no option so I have to look elsewhere. I have done some searching and the new Samsung 840 Pro Series looks good:http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MZ-7PD512BW There is also an older Samsung 830 Series, and I believe Crucial makes a 512GB option as well. Also, if I add a mSATA SSD under the palm rest, could Lenovo really deny me warranty on unrelated issues in the future because of that?  I buy 3-year and 4-year on-site warranties on my machines (and I have used them), so I do not want to jeapordize my warranty.

Hey Hi,  I am planning to upgrade my Thinkpad X230s memory to 8GB. I have few questions, it would be a great help if someone can help me.1) Is it better to use 2x4GB configuration or 1x8GB? What are the advantages? (Does Thinkpad X230 support dual channel configuration?)2) CPU-Z shows that my current RAM is running at 1.5 V. Can I put two 4GB RAM running at 1.35V? (Does Thinkpad X230 support DDR3L type memory?)3) What would happen if I use two RAM having different CAS latency? Thanks in advance.

Hello! I hope that somebody from Lenovo will look at this...

Tuesday this weekend i needed to replace FAN & LCD display. Service gives me TN display instead of IPS that i had. so i looked at it and i see that on lenovo website it show me this:

"Processor: 3rd Generation Intel Core i5-3230M Processor(2.6GHz, 3MB): : Memory: 4GB PC3-12800: : Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64(GR:German): : Hard Drive: 500 GB 5400: : Wired Network: Integrated Intel 82579LM Gigabit Network Adapter: : Wireless Network: WAN Upgradeable; Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (2x2 AGN 300Mbps): : Ports: External Microphone Headphone Line-In/out Combo Jack; 1 USB 2.0 (Constant Power); External Display (VGA); RJ-45; Docking/Port Replicator; Display port; 2 USB 3.0: : Form Factor: Notebook: : Included Warranty: 3Yr 1Yr Bat OSR"

But I have Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3520M CPU @ 2.90GHz.
can you check it? because I am really disappointed by this. Now i have that ugly TN panel which have no contrast at all and hate it.. I want my IPS.

Hi guys! I want to purchase SAMSUNG 850 EVO MZ-75E1T0B/AM 2.5" 1TB SATA III for my x230.But I'm confused, does 1TB SSD supports by this laptop? Does anybody uses 1TB SSD drive on x230?

Answer:Thinkpad x230 and 1TB SSD drive

I am only on ½TB SSD but that works like a charm and I will soon change this to most likely 2TB

Hi All, I have an X230 with 16GB RAM and am aware that the documented maximum is 16GB. The processor however does support upto 32GB;http://ark.intel.com/products/64896/Intel-Core-i5-3320M-Processor-3M-Cache-up-to-3_30-GHz Does anyone know if this will work (unsupported), or know of any technical reasons not to go beyond 16GB? I'm struggling to run my home lab on 16GB and desperately need a solution for additional RAM without buying a new W series system. Thanks,Jon

Answer:Thinkpad X230 - Maximum RAM

Welcome Jon!The processor you describe could also be used on laptops with 4 memory slots. (8GB x 4 DIMM), therefore techinically the processor supports up to 32GB of RAM.However, ThinkPad X230 motherboard only provides 2 memory slots, which is pretty normal for lightweight machines. Usually, only 15" high-powered machines such as W540 provides option for 4 memory slots. Therefore, you are limited to 16GB on X230.Hope this answers your question.

This might be of some help to those who are thinking of adding RAM to their X230 notebooks and thinking of Transcend RAM modules as an option. In 2013 I had purchased a X230 with 4GB RAM module in single slot. Now when I wanted to add another 8 GB RAM, I saw references to Kingston, Hynix, Samsung, Corsair brands in some posts in this forum. Where I live none of these brands are readily available, only Transcend is available in the shops that I frequent. Today I purchased Transcend DDR3 8GB 1600MHz SODIMM module, CL11 2Rx8 512Mx8 (Part no. TS1GSK64V6H). This is 1.5V module. I have already plugged in this module and system now shows 12GB of RAM  Do note that the RAM ICs on the PCB are Hynix brand and the product is Transcend. Here are the screenshots of CPU-Z tool on Windows 7 Home Professional OS.

Hello,I have Thinkpad X230 with Core i5-3320m and wonder if i can upgrade the CPU.The information I have found on the subject is quite controversial. Some sites say that the CPU is soldered to the motherboard, and others say that it is possible.Anyone know some information about it? If this is possible I had thought of these two CPUs: i7-3632qm  and i7-3820qm.The first is 35W, so I not see anyproblem(which carries the notebook is also 35W).The second one is 45W ,so maybe it is not very appropriate. What you think about this?

Answer:thinkpad x230 problem

If you mean that screen comes back after you press enter on your hard disk? If so it could be. Your hard disk no longer bootable due to Windows is damaged or something else caused the drive to lose its boot so then you would need a reinstall but it could be another issue causing it so I will let some one else give you more ways to fix this.

Hi All, We've recently upgraded to Wireless AC, and from reading around, I find that there may not be a way to put Wireless AC cards (I've been looking at the Intel AC-7260) in our ThinkPad X230's. Can anyone please confirm if this is true? This BIOS whitelisting is a ridiculous idea. If I pay £1000+ for a laptop, I don't expect restrictions on what hardware I can use with the laptop. Sort it out Lenovo!! Thanks,Oliver

Answer:ThinkPad X230 Wireless AC

Nobody? Nothing? We've got over 900 Lenovo laptops and desktops on-site, and if Lenovo are going to restrict us from doing simple things like change a wireless card, I will definitely be looking at using a different manufacturer when it comes round to refresh time. Disappointing.

I have a ThinkPad X230 with a 500Gb hard drive (2306-CTO). When I purchased it, I also purchased a Lenovo Slim USB Portable DVD Burner (DY-8A8NH13C). The DVD device works well to install some software from a CD or DVD. I want to consider upgrading this computer to a 1Tb hard drive (0A65633) 1. Will the 0A65633 1 Tb hard drive fit in the X230. That is, replace the existing drive with the new 1 Tb drive?2. The 1 Tb drive is 5400-rpm whereas the existing 500 Gb drive is 7200-rpm. It has been nearly 10 years that I have used anything slower that 7200-rpm. Will the 1 Tb drive be slow?3. Since if is a new drive (no recovery partitions), can I order Recovery DVD's from Lenovo for the X230?  I think I can.4. Can I boot the first Recovery DVD from the USB Slim DVD device?  Will that work? or do I need to purchase a Docking station? 5. I have not changed UEFI security at all in the BIOS. Can I just boot the Recovery DVD?  and will it even install? I imagine I might do this in November after Windows 8.1 is released and combine the two upgrades (hard drive and Windows 8.1) into one exercise. I also might wait until a faster 1 Tb drive is released. Do you imagine fast 1 Tb hard drives in the near future? Thank you, .... JDH

Answer:Upgrade a ThinkPad X230

1. The 0A65633 is a 9.5 mm drive, so it won't fit the X230. It requires 7 mm drives. 2. The speed of the drive is not only dependent on the RPM of the drive, there are other factors too i.e. amount of drive memory cache, etc. Since the density of the data of the 1TB drive more than 500 GB drive, then for each rotation theoretically the reader/writer head should also pick up/write more data thus making it faster. 3. Yes you can. Or make your own. 4. Yes you can. Or use a USB thumb drive to recover from. Fast platter hdd? The technology of platter will only allow so much data to be read, we are pretty much at the technological dead end with the current platter hdd in terms of transfer rate. Don't expect revolutionary breakthrough with the current platter hdd, i am expecting only tiny speed increase increments. I mean if you need speed, use a mSATA drive (maybe 64 gigs one) to act as a cache drive with Lenovo ExpressCache software, or get a SSHD (which is basically a platter hdd with SSD cache installed) pretty much same as the mSATA + normal spinning platter in terms of how it works.

After a trip abroad, my laptop suddenly stopped powering on. I brought it home, connected it to a charger, and then tried turning it on. The power light flashed on but nothing happened, so I held it down to hard boot it, let it rest for a minute, and tried turning it on again. Except now nothing at all happens. I've tried buying a new charger, removing the connection of the BIOS battery/laptop battery and holding down the power button for 30 seconds with the battery removed, but it's all to no avail. I notice that when I plug the laptop in, the battery light flashes green a few times. After letting the computer rest for some time, I noticed that when I hit the power button, the green battery light would come on and stay on. However, the fan does not spin up and it gives no obvious signs of life (no other lights, beeps, no screen flashes, etc). The area around the CPU does appear to get warm, however, when plugged in (the heatsink in particular felt hot). The warmth around the CPU area and the flashing battery light lead me to believe that the motherboard is still functional. I fully disassembled and reassembled the laptop with only bare parts but it didn't help. I also peeled off the black sticker shielding to see if there were any obvious signs of damage, such as blown capacitors, but found nothing out of the ordinary. What is wrong with my laptop? Do I just need to go ahead and replace the motherboard? Did I void the 3-year limited warranty with my reassembly... Read more

Answer:Thinkpad x230 won't power on

After all, the battery connects straight to the motherboard, and so does AC power, so it would have to be at least partially functional to give any signs of life via the flashing green battery symbol, no?

Hi Kunlet,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are looking for Windows up-gradation for your ThinkPad X230.

Before doing any changes to the OS (Operating System) or with HDD partition we suggest you to create the recovery media and then do the required changes.

Below is the link on how to perform the OS up-gradation from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1, Jonas_hendrickx has provided complete details on that.

I am leaning towards buying a Lenovo thinkpad x230 with 6 cell main battery as well as a 44++ 9 cell battery and a 19+ six cell battery configuration (6 +9+6 cell battery configuration). My queries are1. Can all three of the batteries work in conjunction without any issues?2. Do i need to charge the batteries separately or they all get charged simultaneously while i plug a charger in the laptop?3. Is there any other battery option ( like a 9 cell main plus a 44++ 9 cell and a 19+ 6 cell, i.e. 9+9+6 cells) that can work ?

If your laptop model isn't CTO follow the link below and type in Machine-Type-Model (MTM) within Quick Path field:http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/default.pageIf short description of your laptop specification includes "WWAN" statement wwan card SHOULD be factory preinstalled. "WWAN option" isn't the same, it means laptop is WWAN ready, i.e.has built in wwan antennas and sim card holder only, but not the card itself.Follow this link:http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/partsLookup.pageType in your laptop serial number and find out WWAN card model if it was preinstalled into your laptop. Hi all, the Down and the Right arrows keys are stopped working appropriately. When I press the Down arrow key quickly 5 times, it not only jumps 5 lines, but jumps as if I pressed the Page Down button. The problem is similar in the case of the Right arrow: if I press it quickly 3-5 times, the cursor jumps to the end of the line, as if I pressed the End button. The space key has also a problem. If the cursor is inside a word, and I press the space quickly, it starts to separate the word. Example: ab[cursor]cdefghijkl => ab    cde f  ghijk l. I've tested different programs: Notepad++, MS Word, Android Studio, (even booted to Safe Mode) but the problem is the same in all programs. If I press the keys slowly, the problems described above do not appear. The OS is the latest Win10, latest drivers. The problem appeared cca. 2 weeks before, I don't think that I had changed any of the system settings. The other arrow keys are working properly.Model: Thinkpad x230, 2325-Y12. Thank you!Alex

Have you tried to boot a Linux Distro out of a USB-drive? Just to rule out any software/drivers problem.

If you still face the same issue in Linux you most probably have a keyboard or another hardware problem. Swapping a keyboard is quite easy for a X230 and replacement parts not expensive.

What happens if you attach an external usb keyboard?

Hey hi After finally recovering my system to factory settings. I have a question and please bear with me. If i upgrade(not clean install) to windows 8 pro, how will it affect my Lenovo_Recovery partition? Will I be able to if in case required,  revert back to my windows 7 factory setting using F11 keys during boot up? Or this functionality will get erased and my recovery partition will be of no use. Also if i do clean install, I have read it that your windows will not activate as its an upgrade. In that case you need to call Microsoft and explain them your predicament and if its your lucky day you might get it activated. There are some other methods probably not legal to overcome this. Please share your view on that. Also how would re-clean install will affect the activation/system? Please reply. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Thinkpad X230 Windows 8 pro upgrade

Hi, neeraj_schrody

I've never personally done this upgrade, but I think it should technically work like you think it would. If an upgrade to Windows 8 is performed, then this should be installed over the partition that Windows 7 is using, which is not the recovery partition. If you made sure that the recovery partition was not formatted during the upgrade, then I believe it would remain there and the system would be recoverable through this. However, please keep in mind that this is what should be technically possible and is my thoughts, not a fact.

As far as the activation goes, I do not think you will run into any issues. These errors in your post normally only occur when certain criteria for updating are not met. Provided you are running a legitimate copy of Windows 7, which you are, there should be no issues when upgrading.

Hope it helps,Adam

I recently had a problem where my X230 i7 would not power up. It was sent away for repair under warranty. The repair centre replaced the system board and sent it back. I found that the original hard disk and the disks from my other 200 series laptop would not boot up. when I rang the support centre they said that the new level of system board is incompatible with existing disks. they then sent me a set of factory image DVDs which I installed successfully giving me the basic factory default installation. I then tried doing a restore of my original system onto this disk which was unsuccessful. I rang the support centre and described the problem they said that the new updated system board will not support a windows restore.I asked if this was going to affect other users who have new system boards fitted, to which they assumed that it would but I was probably the first to experience this.Just wanted others to know of this and to ask if anyone has a solution rather than re-installing all my programs and configuration from sctratch. Bob

I want to replace HDD with SSD and also reinstall Windows using UEFI (later I also plan to install Linux as second OS).I've searched and found [url=http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Knowledge-Base/Prepare-an-usb-thumb-drive-to-boot-windows-7-in... article[/url] with nice instructions about switching to UEFI. But what about ThinkVantage functionality? In some articles I've found information that several features will be unavailable when UEFI used (for exmaple fingerprint reader). Is it safe to switch to UEFI?Thanks a lot and sorry for my bad English.

Answer:ThinkVantage on ThinkPad x230 with UEFI

If you plan to use Win7 there is no benefit to installing in UEFI mode.  The reason is, because Win7 itself requires the CSM (compatiblity support module) which is basically all of the legacy BIOS features, even when Win7 is installed in UEFI mode.

As for the fingerprint issues you read about in the forum, those were all fixed a while ago, so there won't be any issue.  But some other Lenovo apps, such as Rescue and Recovery, won't work on Win7 in UEFI mode.  And within Lenovo, we don't do any testing on Win7 UEFI mode, so I'm not sure what other problems you might run into.

My strong advice is to use legacy mode for Win7, and UEFI mode for Win8.

Hello! I hope that somebody from Lenovo will look at this... Tuesday this weekend i needed to replace FAN & LCD display. Service gives me TN display instead of IPS that i had. so i looked at it and i see that on lenovo website it show me this: "Processor: 3rd Generation Intel Core i5-3230M Processor(2.6GHz, 3MB): : Memory: 4GB PC3-12800: : Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64(GR:German): : Hard Drive: 500 GB 5400: : Wired Network: Integrated Intel 82579LM Gigabit Network Adapter: : Wireless Network: WAN Upgradeable; Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (2x2 AGN 300Mbps): : Ports: External Microphone Headphone Line-In/out Combo Jack; 1 USB 2.0 (Constant Power); External Display (VGA); RJ-45; Docking/Port Replicator; Display port; 2 USB 3.0: : Form Factor: Notebook: : Included Warranty: 3Yr 1Yr Bat OSR" But I have Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3520M CPU @ 2.90GHz.can you check it? because I am really disappointed by this. Now i have that ugly TN panel which have no contrast at all and hate it.. I want my IPS.

It's been about 5 months since I started to use my Thinkpad  X230.  Only three days ago it could work for 5-6 hours without charging.  I could charge it at home, bring it to school and use it without charging.  But suddenly the battery started to die in a short amount of time.  Then I explored the battery settings a little bit.  I found out it says "Battery Condition: poor" and "Your battery can 47% of its original full charge capacity."   It has warranty until 2015. So can Lenovo send me a new battery if I want so? Or is it a problem that warranty doesn't cover? Please help!!

Answer:Thinkpad X230 Battery issues

Well, a few things. 1.  The warranty you mention sounds like it is for the system.  The system and battery typically have different warranty terms.  Unless of course you did order an additional battery warranty. 2.  However, the base battery warranty is one year, so if you contact them they should get you a replacement since you are only a few months into ownership. Good luck!

Hey, Im planning to order a x230 soon, and I was wondering, if I choose not to have an expresscard reader, will there just be a hole there? I've heard people say their left palm wrest is really flimsy. Is it like that with and without an expresscard reader? Thanks

Answer:Thinkpad x230 expresscard question

Yep, there is just the slot for the card covered by a very flimsy feeling flap. That section of the palmrest flexes a lot. I haven't tried putting a filler piece in but that would probably solve the problem. Aftermarket (i.e. non-OE) expresscards should work fine and are a fraction of the cost.

I want to use my laptop like a desktop so only with the 2 attached monitors and the lid closed. You can configure Windows so that shutting the lid doesn't turn it off but I still need to open it up to turn it on. My desk arrangement makes this a bit tricky (it's under a monitor stand).  If I buy the Ultrabase Series 3 Docking Station, a power button appears on the front. Would I be able to turn it on without opening the lid if I used that?

Answer:Need help with a part number (Thinkpad x230)

Good afternoon.
Welcome to the community.

I looked through the HMM also, to see if there was any notation for the part you describe and found none either. In my previous experience, those types of parts may be included in a package called System Miscellaneous Parts Kit. Looking at the X230 FRU Parts List, page 3 shows such an item (FRU P/N 04W1418), but I have no way of knowing what's included in it.

Checking the FRU P/N on the Maintenance Parts Site, shows the kit is available for $19.50 + shipping, if you feel like taking a chance on it. Hopefully, another member will weigh in with additional details.

Hope this helps a bit.

Hello there, I need help for reanimating this yellow USB port on the right side of the device. in the Bios the port reacts to mouse and key. In Windows 7 64bit, the system tells me I got an unknown device. MS fix it center told me its a hardware issue. Technical service was there and the mainboard exchange made all worse. So the old board stays in, lenovo says its an software issue.A windows 7 upgrade gave me a warning in the beginning that an "USB 2.0 controller: USB 2.0 MTT Hub" and a "USB 2.0 controller: USB 2.0 HUB" need to be fixed by the means of drivers. When I made the Lenovo solution center software update the extensible host (USB 3.0) was installed but the yellow USB port is still not working and the unknown device is still in the device manager. Can anybody help.It is deeply appreciated. Flo

I am looking to purchase the 19+ slice battery for my X230. But the Part Numbers cause me confusion when i try to order them. I see two part numbers  0C13380 / 0A36280 in some listings for the same battery . Though the lenovo site itself as of now lists the latter (0A36280) . A lot of external websites seem to display the former part no (0C13380) for this battery model.  I tried to speak to a lenovo rep, he said they both had similar features, but couldnt give me any further details or feature comparision I was wondering if anyone here could tell if there was difference between the two and guide me to the latest and the appropriate one for my X230 (with the following config i5-3320, 4gb RAM , 320 gb hdd, IPS screen) Thank you

Answer:Problem with fingerprint reader on thinkpad x230

Hi, ajbrewer93

Are you using the Lenvovo software when you are getting this error? If so, this error normally appears when the finger is swiped across the reader and the duration was not long enough. Also, I would make sure the drivers for the reader are up to date (which can be found here), and also that the software is up to date (which can be found here.) When searching for the driver, you can use the dropdown menus to filter by operating system and device (i.e., Fingerprint Reader) to make searching faster.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi, I have a ThinkPad X230, which originally had Windows 7 installed on it.  When I accepted the upgrade to Windows 10, everything worked fine apart from one thing:  the built-in SD Card reader. When I insert an SD card into the reader, the computer eventually recognizes it as a SD card, but when I click on it I get the following message: "D:\ is not accessible.  A device attached to the system is not functioning." I have tried all kinds of things to get it to work, based on various other posts on this forum.  For example installing new drivers from Lenovo website, installing them in Compatibility Mode etc.  But none of these have fixed the issue.  If I right-click on the SD Card icon for my D: drive, and select Properties, it doesn't detect any used space or any free space. If I open Device Manager when there is a SD card inserted, I see "Ricoh SD Disk Device" under the section entitled "Disk Drives", and I see "Ricoh PCIe SD/MMC Host Controller" under the section entitled "Memory technology devices".  I also see " D:\" under the section entitled "Portable Devices". I updated my laptop's BIOS not long ago.  I have BIOS version 2.65. I have an mSATA card (about 120GB) for Windows OS and applications, and a separate 500GB traditional hard drive for my Data.  I have had this mSATA / HDD configuration since the very beginning. Does anybody have any idea what I need to do to fix this problem... I just spent the last 4 days with my new ThinkPad trying to get the webcam working, and someone at work verified that I don't have one.  I am a bit upset about this since all the technical specs on lenovo.com for this model list a webcam as standard (not an option), and when I configured it online at lenovo.com, I was never presented with the option of including or not including the webcam.  Furthermore, the order acknowledgement did not mention the presence or absence of the webcam, so I assumed it was configured with one. I'm happy to send this unit back to get the lid replaced, but I'd be even happier if Lenovo just sent me a replacement at the same time that I returned this unit. What are my options?  Who do I talk to to resolve this? Has this happened to anyone else?

Answer:My new 2306CTO X230 ThinkPad is missing the webcam

Webcam is an option on some models, if you choose the 3X3 antenna, then the webcam option is hidden from you. You need to talk to Lenovo customer service and see whether there is anything that you can be worked out between the two parties.

Hello everyone, Recently I purchased a second-handed ThinkPad-x230 with part number of 2324LZ4. The BIOS is oddly old (G1ET32WW), so I went to the support page and downloaded the latest BIOS update utility from here http://support.lenovo.com/us/zh/downloads/ds029187 with the version G2ETA8WW. When I run the utility, I got an error message "BIOS directory cannot be found". I also tried the USB update method, also similar message and to no avail. My question is, 1. It seems that the newest BIOS does not compactible to my x230 since the version starts with G2 while mine starts with G1. Is my assumption correct?2. If so, where could I found the right image?3. I found someone on the internet successfully flashed CoreBoot to replace the original BIOS. Is it safe? Thank you for your attention.

I'm the lucky recipient of an early ThinkPad X230, it's a review I got yesterday and have had about 24 hours to mess with now (well, I did sleep, so make that 16).  Happy to answer any questions, I'll copy and paste below much of what I wrote in the preview on LaptopReviews.com minus some of the images and video to be bandwidth friendly.   Earlier this week Lenovo announced the ThinkPad X230, a 12.5? screen ultraportable targeted at business buyers. While the X230 won?t go on sale via Lenovo.com until June 2012 (keep an eye on this X230 product page for availablility) we were lucky enough to receive an early review sample to try out. As most of you familiar with the ThinkPad brand know, change is generally slow from one generation to the next to keep the enterprise buying folks from getting all worked up. One thing that certainly almost never changed much was the keyboard. Until now that is.  The X230 and the rest of the ThinkPad line have adopted a new keyboard styling that uses an island style key layout and drops down to six rows of keys from seven. There are a few other changes and added features, the keyboard backlighting being my personal favorite, but for the most part the X230 is just an evolution of the X220 design wise and of course has updated internal components to boost performance.Keyboard Comparison with X220Let?s jump right to the part a lot of people are interested in hearing about -- the keyboard.  Again, a video helps to ... Hello, We have just bought 3 ThinkPad X230 and one of them has a problem; when i tried to do a suspend, the system comes back to the logon screen 1 or 2 second after the suspend, if I tried hibernate, the power button led flashes rapidely and the system restart and if i try to shutdown the machine, the machine restarts. I am using the preload that was installed on the machine. I have tried to restore the bios default settings -> NOK.i have tried to upgrade the firmware of the SSD, no update needed -> NOKI have tried to do a BIOS update -> NOKI have used the machine without the battery, it's the same -> NOKI have tried to use the machine only with the battery -> NOKI have done the memory and SSD diagnostics, both are OK -> NOKI have installed Windows 7 from scratch with all the lenovo drivers, same problem -> NOK One thing is, as soon as I plug the machine on the AC adapter, the machines starts. Is this normal ? (i don't think so but I ask to be sure)Another thing, the power button doesn't seem to work. I can press on the power button as long as i want, nothing happen (no suspend or 'forced' shutdown) Does anyone have an idea what I can do ?I think the machine has a hardware problem as the two others are OK. Thanks in advance for your help. Marc.

Answer:ThinkPad X230 cannot shudown, suspend or hibernate

Hi, MarcVDH

Due to all the testing you have tried thus far, I am inclined to agree with you about the issue being hardware-related. A clean install of Windows 7 should've fixed all software issues the machine may have been having. As such, I would recommend giving support a call at (0)2 339 3611 and telling them of your issue.

Also, as for the machine turning on when the AC adapter is attached, this is a BIOS setting in certain ThinkPads. I'm not sure if it is in the X230, but I know that it is available in the X220t. If you'd like to check, it can be found under Config ? Power in the BIOS.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi All, My first post here...sadly it's not in praise of the thinkpad line. We have two IBM Thinkpad R50e's at work, and was quite impressed with the build quality. Up to now they're holding up quite nicely...which is what made me want a thinkpad. i finally got my hands on a thinkpad x230 last week....and when i opened it, the plastic bezel on the top right corner of the lid popped out On closer inspection i noticed that the top right corner flexed, right where the strip of plastic at the edge meets the LCD display, and with it the bezel. At rest the two pieces don't line up properly. The leftmost corner of the lid showed no flexing at all. i seriously doubt if this was caused by mishandling during shipping. The box only had minor bumps, and none of them seem to line up with where the damage was. i've gone to the local service center here, who informed me that this isn't covered by the warranty. i am currently awaitnig a quote for the part that i will have to pay out of my own pocket, on top of the price i paid for thinkpad "quality". On top of that, there's this annoying battery wiggle. The service center that this is normal...which is quite disappointing, since the battery on my old Asus EEEPC1000, after all these years, has not shown even the slightest wiggle after all these years of abuse. Needless to say i am very disappointed. Sorry to say this but this will most likely be my first and last Lenovo. i am willing to pay a premium for qu... Read more

Answer:thinkpad x230 build quality issues

There's an explanation for the battery wiggle, all systems are like that. Even the X131e. My old laptop used as a workstation has a bad battery, but I took it out so it's temperature can stay at a stable level. I find the "used by NASA" a total bluff as the Space Station relies on older ThinkPad systems, since they were modified to be in 0 gravity environments. Sorry to hear that your X230's bezel popped out, mine doesn't suffer this so I'm presuming it's batch was a little lemony. I had another X230 which I returned for a full refund and waited a year and ordered again. It's a little ridiculous, because Lenovo normally sells nice systems but they're cheapening out over the years.

Hello, I just bough an old ThinkPad X230 yesterday and the machine came preloaded with Windows 8 Pro (There is also a Genuine Color-changing Stamp of Windows 8 applied to the base of the ThinkPad). I immediately updated to Windows 10 without any problems as the Windows was activated automatically and everything is working just fine now. However, I'm planning to replace the hdd originally installed in my X230 with a Samsung 850 EVO SSD to boost up performance, but I have no ideas what to do to keep my Windows genuine after installing Windows in the new SSD.There are posts confirm that the activation key is embedded into the bios of some sort so the Windows will be automatically activated no matter what kind of hardware change I make. Is this right? I really need your help and deeply appreciate all your information.Thank you

Using the latest win 10 install media your license is read from bios during a clean install. So your good.Remember to switch bios into uefi only and turn on secure boot (if not already enabled). If your new 850 evo is not blank, make sure to delete all partitions on it during win install to get a GPT partition table. I also suggest you update the BIOS now before you start the swap.

Hi all,i've bought new Thinkpad X230 and have a question about thinkvantage button color . I search on the internet and found almost are blue and has a ThinkVantage text, but my x230 thinkvantage button is black. Any idea about this? Thanks all.

Answer:Thinkpad X230 and thinkvantage button color

the early marketing photo had them in blue, then they changed it to black to get colour uniformity on the keyboard keys. The new generation ThinkPad doesn't even have this dedicated button anymore.

Hi We recently bought a couple of x230's to our company and now we wish to deploy our company default image to them via our wds server. Problem is that when we try to boot it up in to the pxe it times out every time.x220 series works just fine so we have no problem with the deployment servers nor the network. Any ideas? BR

Answer:Unable to pxe boot ThinkPad X230 (2325)

Hey mate,  This is going to be UEFI Secure Boot settings. Just had the same issue.  Disable secure Boot and change the boot settings to Legacy
