Bus Issues on ThinkPad X230 with A4Tech Cyrillic (Russian) keyboard

Question: Bus Issues on ThinkPad X230 with A4Tech Cyrillic (Russian) keyboard

I have recently encountered two bus issues on my recently acquired old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692].My research requires me to use a Cyrillic (Russian) keyboard and fairly recently I acquired a nice keyboard with a small footprint in Saint Petersburg. It is manufactured in China by A4Tech (www.a4tech.com) [Model KV-300H].When I initially plugged the keyboard in, it worked perfectly. However, after a short number of pluggings and unpluggings, an error message appeared: "USB device not recognized. The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it." More detail on the error appeared in item 1, below. 1 Unknown USB Device (Invalid Device Descriptor) Error msg: 'Location: Port_#0003.Hub_#0004 Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) The USB device returned an invalid USB device descriptor. Driver File Details C:\WINDOWS\system\DRIVERS\edevmon.sys' The system searched automatically for software online -- but didn't find the driver within 5 mins, at which time I cancelled the process. The keyboard manufacturer says that no driver is required. 2 IWD Bus Enumerator has a driver problem. Error msg: 'There is a problem with the driver for IWD Bus Enumerator. The driver needs to be reinstalled. Name: IWD Bus Enumerator ID: ROOT\SYSTEM\0004 Error code: 31' This came up as a result of reviewing problem 1, above. I'd be grateful for any help, especially on problem 1. My location is Australia.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I also have the same problem with my Vista OS... I want it to show the Russian Cyrillic in the MS Office PowerPoint 2007. Does anyone know how to fix the problem or does it mean I need to buy a Russian Cyrillic Support for Windows VISTA (http://www.russiankeyboards.com/rucysuforwiv.html) ?

XP Pro. Trying to set up on a newer computer, I enabled some languages in Control Panel > Regional & Language Options. But when I set the language bar to Russian, I can type only in the standard Latin, same as English. It won't give me the Cyrillic alphabet. In Serbian and Ukrainian there is no problem, I get Cyrillic from the keyboard, but not in Russian. I cannot tell you about Bulgarian because it has vanished from the Language Options list--just isn't there at all.

So why don't I get Cyrillic when the language bar is set to Russian, and how could Bulgarian simply disappear from the list? (I don't see FYROMacedonian either, although it was there on my former computer; I presume the same has happened to it, whatever the same is).

I ordered ThinkPad P71 laptop recently(doesn't shipped yet). I really excited about it, but one fact makes me frustrated... why I can't order laptop with different layout than only English???US is multinational county, many immigrants here, they still need keyboard layout with their language!Apple, for example, provide ability to order laptop with any keyboard layout. Why Lenovo doesn't??? I came US not so far ago and still need Russian keyboard layout.I have 3 options:1) Order another keyboard with layout that I need(Russian) - most expensive, I don't need two keyboards2) Use stickers - ugly solution, doesn't work with backlit3) Laser engraveling - good result, work with backlit, but unavaliable in my areaIn fact, I haven't acceptable solution for my problem...

Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2½" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2½" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

Hi Sirs/Madams, Good Day. I would like to seek for your humble assistance if ever you have any idea on how to fix the whole plate of the x230 keyboard. What happend was accidentally I spilt a huge amount of coffer in my unit. i immediately placed my laptop upside down to run any liquid in the keyboard, how ever after a couple of hours, i cannot use it any more. when I tried to swithed it off, and try to switch-on; no avail. Will there be any chance that i can still recover the whole keyboard? since i tried to use other keyboard (same model) and it worked. also the power button does not function anymore.  Thanks thanks

Hallo, I have a problem with my 3 yo X230 where the battery is fast empty, only 20 minutes from full charging although I only open 1 program (Excel/word/etc.). Should I change the battery ? In lenovoquickpick.com, the battery seems for type X230T (Part number: 0A36317). Can it be used for X230 ? From the picture shown in web, it is different from the battery installed in my laptop (4 cells). Now I am in Germany and quit difficult to find Lenovo people who can speak English well. Thank you

It's been about 5 months since I started to use my Thinkpad  X230.  Only three days ago it could work for 5-6 hours without charging.  I could charge it at home, bring it to school and use it without charging.  But suddenly the battery started to die in a short amount of time.  Then I explored the battery settings a little bit.  I found out it says "Battery Condition: poor" and "Your battery can 47% of its original full charge capacity."   It has warranty until 2015. So can Lenovo send me a new battery if I want so? Or is it a problem that warranty doesn't cover? Please help!!

Answer:Thinkpad X230 Battery issues

Well, a few things. 1.  The warranty you mention sounds like it is for the system.  The system and battery typically have different warranty terms.  Unless of course you did order an additional battery warranty. 2.  However, the base battery warranty is one year, so if you contact them they should get you a replacement since you are only a few months into ownership. Good luck!

I have an english Win7 Home Premium.
On my system I have a sub-sub-dir with cyrillic folder name.

How can I change into this folder in CommandPrompt?

When I copy the full path from WinExplorer and type/paste it in CommandPrompt like:

D:\tmp>cd "D:\data\??????????"

then this is not possible because the cyrillic chars are replaced by "?" and CommandPrompt Win7 does not recognize the folder.

How else can I get into such a folder?

Hi All, My first post here...sadly it's not in praise of the thinkpad line. We have two IBM Thinkpad R50e's at work, and was quite impressed with the build quality. Up to now they're holding up quite nicely...which is what made me want a thinkpad. i finally got my hands on a thinkpad x230 last week....and when i opened it, the plastic bezel on the top right corner of the lid popped out On closer inspection i noticed that the top right corner flexed, right where the strip of plastic at the edge meets the LCD display, and with it the bezel. At rest the two pieces don't line up properly. The leftmost corner of the lid showed no flexing at all. i seriously doubt if this was caused by mishandling during shipping. The box only had minor bumps, and none of them seem to line up with where the damage was. i've gone to the local service center here, who informed me that this isn't covered by the warranty. i am currently awaitnig a quote for the part that i will have to pay out of my own pocket, on top of the price i paid for thinkpad "quality". On top of that, there's this annoying battery wiggle. The service center that this is normal...which is quite disappointing, since the battery on my old Asus EEEPC1000, after all these years, has not shown even the slightest wiggle after all these years of abuse. Needless to say i am very disappointed. Sorry to say this but this will most likely be my first and last Lenovo. i am willing to pay a premium for qu... Read more

Answer:thinkpad x230 build quality issues

There's an explanation for the battery wiggle, all systems are like that. Even the X131e. My old laptop used as a workstation has a bad battery, but I took it out so it's temperature can stay at a stable level. I find the "used by NASA" a total bluff as the Space Station relies on older ThinkPad systems, since they were modified to be in 0 gravity environments. Sorry to hear that your X230's bezel popped out, mine doesn't suffer this so I'm presuming it's batch was a little lemony. I had another X230 which I returned for a full refund and waited a year and ordered again. It's a little ridiculous, because Lenovo normally sells nice systems but they're cheapening out over the years.

I am looking to buy either an X220 or X230 Thinkpad laptop and have been reading the forums here for information about wake from sleep issues for these two machines. I have found a lot on the X220 - seems to be a common problem, so I am now thinking that isn't going to be my choice. My questions for those who may have experienced this with an X230: -is the wake from sleep a common issue with the X230 laptop?-is this more of a SSD issue than a regular HHD?-is this related to the amount of RAM installed?-is this more of a Win 7 issue? If so, any version that is more susceptible? I had an HP laptop that finally was unusable due to this issue and want to avoid that with a new laptop. I really like the features and size of the x230 - and that I can still get Win 7. Any input on how often the X230 has this type of issue - and any solutions that have worked - would be greatly appreciated, as I really am reluctant to have history repeated with this wake from sleep issue. Thanks!HL

I have just completed a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and all went well except for the screen brightness issue. Anyone have any ideas where I can simply increase this as I have searched everywhere for screen brightness, even BIOS for any setting for display. I have latest update to display driver. I have two other laptops and each shows much brighter than this one and I am surely disappointed in this display. Not sure if it is because this screen is touch enabled and also works off keyboard that could be the issue and a separate setting could be involved on the touch side of the display as it does work with a stylus pen or touch also. thanks and   I hope I can get this brightness to increase somewhat as it is too hazy for me.

I have owned my ThinkPad X230 for roughly 4 months now. About 3 weeks into using it, the "u" key cover on the keyboard fell off. When I called customer support they told me the key was not covered by the warranty. So I have been working with the key taped over top of the pad. Then two days ago the "g" key cover fell off. I refuse to work on a computer with two taped keys and since calling customer service is no help, I need some advice. Is there an address where I can send a letter to the complaint department? Anyone with ideas please let me know.

Answer:X230 Keyboard Issues

That is really ridiculous!  My sympathies. Sometimes the less u say the better. Callback support.  Don't mention your previous calls. Tell them that the "U" key doesn't work when you press it.  Don't say anything else.  They will in all likelihood send you a new keyboard overnight.  Piece of cake to replace the keyboard.. Let us know how you made out.

I just received a new compay issues computer: x230 running Windows Pro 64 bit, Office 2010 and an SSD.  Unfortunately, out of the box the pointing devices, either the ultranav or an external mouse and keyboard (MSFT Sculpt), suffer from auto clicking and inability to input text...the text writes over itself...cursor moves forward and then backspaces on itself. The external keyboard worked fine when tested on other notebooks at home.  I did unistall the MSFt keyboard SW on the x230 to see if that made a difference.  Nope.  My IT team remotely updated all drivers, etc. So, everthing system-wise is up to date.  They seemed to have fixed it for about an hour, then it went back to this behavior, including opening multiple instances of applications on its own. The PC is unusable. Thoughts? Halfcalf18

Friend's Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Her logon screen has a language option in lower left of screen. Default is checked as Uzbek Cyrillic. Other option is US. Have to change the option to US in order to logon. Checked the Regional and Language Options in Control Panel and then the Change Keyboard button under the Keyboard and Languages tab. In the Text Services and Input Languages, General tab, the Default input language is listed as English (United States)-US with no other options available in the drop down arrow. The only listing under Installed services is EN - English (United States), Keyboard :US.

She swears that this has been the way the logon screen has appeared since she purchased the system 3 - 4 years ago. Any clue as to how the Uzbek Cyrillic is the default logon keyboard language without it being listed in the above settings and how to change it to be only US?

TIA for any replies.

Answer:Keyboard language logon is Uzbek Cyrillic

Hi Hicountryrider,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

You're very close to the answer, but I think you're missing one step that's the key. Go to Start / Control Panel / Regional and Language Options. Make sure English (US) is selected in General, Location, and Keyboard and Input Default Language. Then click on Administrative and click "Copy to Reserved Accounts" and when the box appears, check both options and click OK. I believe this last part (especially the second box) will do the trick. OK or close your way out of Control Panel and then reboot. I'd be willing to wager you see only English (US) on the Welcome screen.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

I have had my T60 for about a year and about a month ago, the top row of keys on the keyboard (qweruiop) stopped working suddenly, and I had to buy a USB keyboard.  Now, my "up" volume button built in to the laptop does not work and my laptop has no sound.  Those are the only buttons that don't work on the keyboard but they are the most important.  The "down" and "mute" buttons work fine, but unfortunately the sound is turned all the way down.  The volume adjustment is windows is turned all the way up, but there is no sound from the system.  What should I do about this?  My laptop is under warranty, so should I just get the keyboard replaced, or is there something I can do myself?  Thank you.

Answer:Thinkpad T60 Keyboard Issues

You could check the keyboard whether it is properly connected to the motherboard, by taking the palm rest and the keyboard off.

Ever since I had to format and reinstall WinXP my laptop, it has developed several annoying issues. First that developed was the built in touchpad and trackpoint stopped working intermittantly. Even with updating the driver, they seldom work. I found that opening the properties page in device manager makes it work for about 10 seconds, then it cuts out. Even then, it only allows the touchpad to function for the time, leaving the trackpoint useless. That doesn't matter to me, since I can use the USB mouse when I'm in the house. It just would be nice to rely on the touchpad when I need it!

Then a couple months later, the keyboard cuts out. Not completely, mind you... It works during POST, it works when it asks you to choose OS (I dual booted for 2k and XP), and most of the time it works for me to input my password into the user select screen of WinXP. The cutting out of the KB is completely random, though I've noticed that it's more frequent to cut out when loading IE or Firefox too soon after booting up, though it is not limited to the loading of those programs. Some times, it will get past POST and OS selection, but not work to enter the password.

The IBM troubleshooting page has been useless. All they want to say is that the KB is shot, but that's only because the only options is "The keyboard does not work at all!", which is not the case. I am typing this on the laptop in question as we speak, so obviously it works.

My only thought is t... Read more

Hi everyone, I received my ThinkPad Yoga yesterday. Upon booting it up, everything seemed to be working fine. I set it up and everything without a hitch. Then I got to the OS (Win 8.1). The keyboard just didn't respond at all. So I got fed up with trying to figure it out (a USB keyboard didn't work either), so I installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview since I would be installing it eventually anyway. Same issue, worked at boot and at login screen, stopped working after that. This time it made a noise though. The Yoga makes a very strange "you can't do that" type of noise every time I push a key. I then tried Ubuntu, on which the keyboard works find, but upon installing Windows 10 again I have the same issue.I'm totally confused at this point. I've obviously tried every driver I could possibly find for the device. I've been looking everywhere and I can't find anyone with a similar issue. I have the model with the Wacom stylus / digitizer, and it's the Signature Edition, if that matters. Any help is appreciated. P.S. Sorry for the wall of text ;p

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T440. I have replaced the trackpad with an older style trackpad, after putting everything back together it seemed as if everything was fine, but then I noticed that the delete key, PgUp, PgDn and PrtSc were not working. Note, the delete key does not respond even when I'm in the BIOS. I find it very hard to believe that I've damaged the keyboard and thus the functionality of some keys has been lost, I have examined the connecting ribbon cable and connection socket carefully, they are undamaged and free of debree. Can anyone give me any other suggestions? An external USB keyboard works fine.Delete Key doesn't work in BIOS.

My keys were beginning to stop working one by one, (number keys, spacebar, and overall sections of the keyboard). It turned out the ribbon, main connection, was just getting loose. The "latch" that holds this ribbon in place is not very secure. You may want to try getting access to the keyboard to check the connections.

Edit: I didn't realize how wordy this was till after I posted and looked at it! So here's a quick rundown.  Laptop keyboard isn't working properly. USB keyboard worked for a time then stopped working properly as well. Opening the onscreen keyboard restores fuctionality to the USB keyboard and partially to the laptop keyboard. Doing a complete system wipe and restoring to Lenovo settings didn't fix the issue.  This issue has progressed through different symptoms, so I will list them in the order they showed up. The first weird thing that started happening was keys not doing what they were supposed to. For example, when I hit H it would type several characters such as "efl." The E key would sometimes act like a command shortcut. Other keys didn't do anything at all. After this I hooked a USB keyboard to the laptop and at first, that worked fine. However, after the laptop went to sleep once and I woke it back up, the USB keyboard was also acting strangely, in much the same manner as described above. The onboard keyboard was still doing the same thing as well. I then restarted the laptop, and neither keyboard would hardly do anything at all. For some reason the E key on both keyboards would still act like it was hotkeyed to open some things, such as opening the edit function in word or my browser. After this I opened the onscreen keyboard, and it worked properly. For some reason, opening the onscreen keyboard and then closing it causes the ... Read more

Hello,  I recently purchased a Thinkpad Yoga 12 (MP1091PE). I love this laptop since it is a major upgrade from my previous one. I finally got an opportunity to really use the laptop for all its features the last couple days, after completing all the updates for windows 10 pro and lenovo drivers and BIOs.  1) OneNote IssueWhen I would be using Onenote 2013 to take notes with the pen and drag the document, I would have no issues. Howver, when I put the computer to sleep and wake it up again, the touch features (like zoome and draging) do not work. This is the same for the scrolling gesture with the trackpad. I would have to close one note and re open it to make it work again.  I have been looking through the forums about this issue, and have not been able to find a fix. I can recommend you to check on the drivers of the touchscreen and digiter.

Hello! I ordered this laptop in Germany but it has a keyboard without Russian letters. Tell me the part number of the keyboard with Russian letters that will fit this laptop for replacement. I apologize for the language, wrote through Google translator. Thank you in advance

Hi, I inadvertently pressed something on my ThinkPad keyboard and it's now not typing what I expect to see. The language is set in the control panel to English UK and this hasn't been affected. However most of the letter keys are now acting as keyboard shortcuts. In Word 2010 this is what happens: 4 = ?e = ?r = registered symbolt = trademark symboly = puts cursor to beginning of linei = opens File menuo = puts document in outline viewa = às = triggers split screend = enters a bookmarkf = enters a footnotel = starts a numbered listc = copyright symbolv = opens paste special dialog box I've obviously trigger some keyboard shortcut to change the settings but have no idea how. Need to reset this asap as it's my work laptop - IT team not able to help as I'm not on the company network and can't log on as my password can't be typed in accurately... Any help appreciated. Thanks.

It is great that a Russian mnemonic keyboard is added in windows8.But I can not find the letter щ. Where is it?It is a necessary letter, for example it appears in ямщик.Thanks in advance

Answer:щ missing in Russian Mnemonic keyboard

At least 3 letters are missing in the windows8 Russian mnemonic keyboard: щ,ч and э.They exist in the standard Russian keyboard. There they are at the location (in the US keyboard) of: o,x and'Without these three letters the mnemonic keyboard is useless

It helps a lot that windows8 will include a Russian mnemonic keyboard. Unfortunately a letter is missing entirely, namely the letter щ.
Any plans to correct this?

The letters й, с, ц and ы repeat themselves when I use the Russian Mnemonic Keyboard built into 8.1... that is, they appear twice when I press the key only once. It doesn't happen with the Russian Typewriter layout. Is anyone experiencing the same thing or does anyone know of a solution?

My apologies if this has been covered somewhere else, but I haven't been able to find it.

Thanks.

Im setting up a computer for a family that is Russian and English speaking.

I have installed the Russian keyboard under region and language settings. I can set either to default.

The problem is, when I do shift+alt to switch to Russian, it always changes back to English when clicking on a new window. I assume that is by design as English is default.

What I want is NO default. If someone switches it to Russian I want it to STAY in russian no matter what window they are in, and vise versa for English.

Can this be done?

Thanks.

Answer:Switching Keyboard settings (russian and english) do not stay

I've noticed this problem in windows 7 my self,
One work around this is to click with mouse into notepad (or browser's address bar for example or any other writable field) and then switch to another keyboard language by using your mouse cursor and language bar located bottom-right on task bar, after that type something on your keyboard to make this language permanent until next change.
if doesn't work try to repeat this process few times, the point is to type something wright after keyboard language is switched.

Good luck.

Two questions: I've been thinking about buying an X230 (or the X1 Carbon), but the more I look the more I think I should take advantage of the ability to upgrade the x230 with both more RAM and a WWAN-fitting SSD by buying the minimum specs available.  The tests I've seen have mostly been with the x230 with the i5 chip and an HDD.  When I compared the i5 and i7 chips (http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-3520M-vs-Intel-Core-i5-3320M) they seemed to be pretty similar.  Is the i5 sufficiently fast with an SSD or would I regret trying to be extra cheap.  Also, is it silly to get a model with an SSD drive already in it, if I'm going to get an mSATA drive anyway? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks,.

Answer:Thinkpad X230 i5 vs i7, HDD vs. SSD

I have an X230 with the i5 CPU and a 500Gb 7200-rpm hard drive. It is plenty fast to do anything I need including having 2 machines running on top of the Windows 8 host (3 separate machines all running at the same time). Even so, I can run anything else I want. It is certainly fast enough to work with an SSD. I did not do SSD because they are not big enough and are still subject to catastrophic failure (no gentle failure for SSD's).  .... JDH

Hello,I have Thinkpad X230 with Core i5-3320m and wonder if i can upgrade the CPU.The information I have found on the subject is quite controversial. Some sites say that the CPU is soldered to the motherboard, and others say that it is possible.Anyone know some information about it? If this is possible I had thought of these two CPUs: i7-3632qm  and i7-3820qm.The first is 35W, so I not see anyproblem(which carries the notebook is also 35W).The second one is 45W ,so maybe it is not very appropriate. What you think about this?

Hello! I hope that somebody from Lenovo will look at this...

Tuesday this weekend i needed to replace FAN & LCD display. Service gives me TN display instead of IPS that i had. so i looked at it and i see that on lenovo website it show me this:

"Processor: 3rd Generation Intel Core i5-3230M Processor(2.6GHz, 3MB): : Memory: 4GB PC3-12800: : Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64(GR:German): : Hard Drive: 500 GB 5400: : Wired Network: Integrated Intel 82579LM Gigabit Network Adapter: : Wireless Network: WAN Upgradeable; Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (2x2 AGN 300Mbps): : Ports: External Microphone Headphone Line-In/out Combo Jack; 1 USB 2.0 (Constant Power); External Display (VGA); RJ-45; Docking/Port Replicator; Display port; 2 USB 3.0: : Form Factor: Notebook: : Included Warranty: 3Yr 1Yr Bat OSR"

But I have Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3520M CPU @ 2.90GHz.
can you check it? because I am really disappointed by this. Now i have that ugly TN panel which have no contrast at all and hate it.. I want my IPS.

Hi All, I have an X230 with 16GB RAM and am aware that the documented maximum is 16GB. The processor however does support upto 32GB;http://ark.intel.com/products/64896/Intel-Core-i5-3320M-Processor-3M-Cache-up-to-3_30-GHz Does anyone know if this will work (unsupported), or know of any technical reasons not to go beyond 16GB? I'm struggling to run my home lab on 16GB and desperately need a solution for additional RAM without buying a new W series system. Thanks,Jon

Answer:Thinkpad X230 - Maximum RAM

Welcome Jon!The processor you describe could also be used on laptops with 4 memory slots. (8GB x 4 DIMM), therefore techinically the processor supports up to 32GB of RAM.However, ThinkPad X230 motherboard only provides 2 memory slots, which is pretty normal for lightweight machines. Usually, only 15" high-powered machines such as W540 provides option for 4 memory slots. Therefore, you are limited to 16GB on X230.Hope this answers your question.

Hey Hi,  I am planning to upgrade my Thinkpad X230s memory to 8GB. I have few questions, it would be a great help if someone can help me.1) Is it better to use 2x4GB configuration or 1x8GB? What are the advantages? (Does Thinkpad X230 support dual channel configuration?)2) CPU-Z shows that my current RAM is running at 1.5 V. Can I put two 4GB RAM running at 1.35V? (Does Thinkpad X230 support DDR3L type memory?)3) What would happen if I use two RAM having different CAS latency? Thanks in advance.

I have a ThinkPad X230 with a 500Gb hard drive (2306-CTO). When I purchased it, I also purchased a Lenovo Slim USB Portable DVD Burner (DY-8A8NH13C). The DVD device works well to install some software from a CD or DVD. I want to consider upgrading this computer to a 1Tb hard drive (0A65633) 1. Will the 0A65633 1 Tb hard drive fit in the X230. That is, replace the existing drive with the new 1 Tb drive?2. The 1 Tb drive is 5400-rpm whereas the existing 500 Gb drive is 7200-rpm. It has been nearly 10 years that I have used anything slower that 7200-rpm. Will the 1 Tb drive be slow?3. Since if is a new drive (no recovery partitions), can I order Recovery DVD's from Lenovo for the X230?  I think I can.4. Can I boot the first Recovery DVD from the USB Slim DVD device?  Will that work? or do I need to purchase a Docking station? 5. I have not changed UEFI security at all in the BIOS. Can I just boot the Recovery DVD?  and will it even install? I imagine I might do this in November after Windows 8.1 is released and combine the two upgrades (hard drive and Windows 8.1) into one exercise. I also might wait until a faster 1 Tb drive is released. Do you imagine fast 1 Tb hard drives in the near future? Thank you, .... JDH

Answer:Upgrade a ThinkPad X230

1. The 0A65633 is a 9.5 mm drive, so it won't fit the X230. It requires 7 mm drives. 2. The speed of the drive is not only dependent on the RPM of the drive, there are other factors too i.e. amount of drive memory cache, etc. Since the density of the data of the 1TB drive more than 500 GB drive, then for each rotation theoretically the reader/writer head should also pick up/write more data thus making it faster. 3. Yes you can. Or make your own. 4. Yes you can. Or use a USB thumb drive to recover from. Fast platter hdd? The technology of platter will only allow so much data to be read, we are pretty much at the technological dead end with the current platter hdd in terms of transfer rate. Don't expect revolutionary breakthrough with the current platter hdd, i am expecting only tiny speed increase increments. I mean if you need speed, use a mSATA drive (maybe 64 gigs one) to act as a cache drive with Lenovo ExpressCache software, or get a SSHD (which is basically a platter hdd with SSD cache installed) pretty much same as the mSATA + normal spinning platter in terms of how it works.

Answer:thinkpad x230 problem

If you mean that screen comes back after you press enter on your hard disk? If so it could be. Your hard disk no longer bootable due to Windows is damaged or something else caused the drive to lose its boot so then you would need a reinstall but it could be another issue causing it so I will let some one else give you more ways to fix this.

The ThinkPad X230 uses 44, 44+ or 44++ batteries. The 29 series batteries are only made for ThinkPad X220. The 29 batteries in the X230 will not charge, as it will be seen as NON-authentic battery. http://www.thinkscopes.com/29-29-or-29-batteries-in-the-thinkpad-x230/

I'm considering making the switch to a ThinkPad X230, but I need big storage space (right now I keep a HDD in the Ultrabay of my T420s).  Can anyone recommend some 512 GB SSD options?  I want quality and reliability and a good warranty.  I wish Lenovo offered one as I prefer to keep the all the parts backed by Lenovo, but in this case they offer no option so I have to look elsewhere. I have done some searching and the new Samsung 840 Pro Series looks good:http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MZ-7PD512BW There is also an older Samsung 830 Series, and I believe Crucial makes a 512GB option as well. Also, if I add a mSATA SSD under the palm rest, could Lenovo really deny me warranty on unrelated issues in the future because of that?  I buy 3-year and 4-year on-site warranties on my machines (and I have used them), so I do not want to jeapordize my warranty.

After a trip abroad, my laptop suddenly stopped powering on. I brought it home, connected it to a charger, and then tried turning it on. The power light flashed on but nothing happened, so I held it down to hard boot it, let it rest for a minute, and tried turning it on again. Except now nothing at all happens. I've tried buying a new charger, removing the connection of the BIOS battery/laptop battery and holding down the power button for 30 seconds with the battery removed, but it's all to no avail. I notice that when I plug the laptop in, the battery light flashes green a few times. After letting the computer rest for some time, I noticed that when I hit the power button, the green battery light would come on and stay on. However, the fan does not spin up and it gives no obvious signs of life (no other lights, beeps, no screen flashes, etc). The area around the CPU does appear to get warm, however, when plugged in (the heatsink in particular felt hot). The warmth around the CPU area and the flashing battery light lead me to believe that the motherboard is still functional. I fully disassembled and reassembled the laptop with only bare parts but it didn't help. I also peeled off the black sticker shielding to see if there were any obvious signs of damage, such as blown capacitors, but found nothing out of the ordinary. What is wrong with my laptop? Do I just need to go ahead and replace the motherboard? Did I void the 3-year limited warranty with my reassembly... Read more

Answer:Thinkpad x230 won't power on

After all, the battery connects straight to the motherboard, and so does AC power, so it would have to be at least partially functional to give any signs of life via the flashing green battery symbol, no?

Hi All, We've recently upgraded to Wireless AC, and from reading around, I find that there may not be a way to put Wireless AC cards (I've been looking at the Intel AC-7260) in our ThinkPad X230's. Can anyone please confirm if this is true? This BIOS whitelisting is a ridiculous idea. If I pay £1000+ for a laptop, I don't expect restrictions on what hardware I can use with the laptop. Sort it out Lenovo!! Thanks,Oliver

Answer:ThinkPad X230 Wireless AC

Nobody? Nothing? We've got over 900 Lenovo laptops and desktops on-site, and if Lenovo are going to restrict us from doing simple things like change a wireless card, I will definitely be looking at using a different manufacturer when it comes round to refresh time. Disappointing.

This might be of some help to those who are thinking of adding RAM to their X230 notebooks and thinking of Transcend RAM modules as an option. In 2013 I had purchased a X230 with 4GB RAM module in single slot. Now when I wanted to add another 8 GB RAM, I saw references to Kingston, Hynix, Samsung, Corsair brands in some posts in this forum. Where I live none of these brands are readily available, only Transcend is available in the shops that I frequent. Today I purchased Transcend DDR3 8GB 1600MHz SODIMM module, CL11 2Rx8 512Mx8 (Part no. TS1GSK64V6H). This is 1.5V module. I have already plugged in this module and system now shows 12GB of RAM  Do note that the RAM ICs on the PCB are Hynix brand and the product is Transcend. Here are the screenshots of CPU-Z tool on Windows 7 Home Professional OS.

As per the query we understood that you are looking for Windows up-gradation for your ThinkPad X230.

Before doing any changes to the OS (Operating System) or with HDD partition we suggest you to create the recovery media and then do the required changes.

Below is the link on how to perform the OS up-gradation from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1, Jonas_hendrickx has provided complete details on that.

Hi all, the Down and the Right arrows keys are stopped working appropriately. When I press the Down arrow key quickly 5 times, it not only jumps 5 lines, but jumps as if I pressed the Page Down button. The problem is similar in the case of the Right arrow: if I press it quickly 3-5 times, the cursor jumps to the end of the line, as if I pressed the End button. The space key has also a problem. If the cursor is inside a word, and I press the space quickly, it starts to separate the word. Example: ab[cursor]cdefghijkl => ab    cde f  ghijk l. I've tested different programs: Notepad++, MS Word, Android Studio, (even booted to Safe Mode) but the problem is the same in all programs. If I press the keys slowly, the problems described above do not appear. The OS is the latest Win10, latest drivers. The problem appeared cca. 2 weeks before, I don't think that I had changed any of the system settings. The other arrow keys are working properly.Model: Thinkpad x230, 2325-Y12. Thank you!Alex

Have you tried to boot a Linux Distro out of a USB-drive? Just to rule out any software/drivers problem.

If you still face the same issue in Linux you most probably have a keyboard or another hardware problem. Swapping a keyboard is quite easy for a X230 and replacement parts not expensive.

What happens if you attach an external usb keyboard?

I want to use my laptop like a desktop so only with the 2 attached monitors and the lid closed. You can configure Windows so that shutting the lid doesn't turn it off but I still need to open it up to turn it on. Would I be able to turn it on without opening the lid if I used that?

I looked through the HMM also, to see if there was any notation for the part you describe and found none either. In my previous experience, those types of parts may be included in a package called System Miscellaneous Parts Kit. Looking at the X230 FRU Parts List, page 3 shows such an item (FRU P/N 04W1418), but I have no way of knowing what's included in it.

Checking the FRU P/N on the Maintenance Parts Site, shows the kit is available for $19.50 + shipping, if you feel like taking a chance on it. Hopefully, another member will weigh in with additional details.

Hope this helps a bit.

Hey hi After finally recovering my system to factory settings. I have a question and please bear with me. If i upgrade(not clean install) to windows 8 pro, how will it affect my Lenovo_Recovery partition? Will I be able to if in case required,  revert back to my windows 7 factory setting using F11 keys during boot up? Or this functionality will get erased and my recovery partition will be of no use. Also if i do clean install, I have read it that your windows will not activate as its an upgrade. In that case you need to call Microsoft and explain them your predicament and if its your lucky day you might get it activated. There are some other methods probably not legal to overcome this. Please share your view on that. Also how would re-clean install will affect the activation/system? Please reply. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Thinkpad X230 Windows 8 pro upgrade

Hi, neeraj_schrody

I've never personally done this upgrade, but I think it should technically work like you think it would. If an upgrade to Windows 8 is performed, then this should be installed over the partition that Windows 7 is using, which is not the recovery partition. If you made sure that the recovery partition was not formatted during the upgrade, then I believe it would remain there and the system would be recoverable through this. However, please keep in mind that this is what should be technically possible and is my thoughts, not a fact.

As far as the activation goes, I do not think you will run into any issues. These errors in your post normally only occur when certain criteria for updating are not met. Provided you are running a legitimate copy of Windows 7, which you are, there should be no issues when upgrading.

Hope it helps,Adam

8GB Single-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (11-11-11-28)
465GB Samsung SSD 840 Series ATA Device (SSD)
Win7Pro x64 SP1

Have installed all of the relevant keyboard drivers on the Lenovo support site:

Function key commands are all busted save for Fn+F4 (sleep). Volume controls work but produce no on-screen display of the volume level changing, muting, etc. Device Manager sees the following:

Reluctant to uninstall the existing keyboard (requires restart) as I then can't enter a login PW or enter BIOS, or can I? Is that even the right course of action?

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Answer:ThinkPad X230 Hotkey Drivers

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/pro...books/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x230
you probably need
1. Fingerprint Reader
2. HotKey Features Integration
3. Intel Chipset Support
4. Intel Graphics Driver (for the video glitch in your other thread)
5. Intel Management Engine
If it were me, I'd enter the serial number and then let the site post all the drivers for your X230.

I am leaning towards buying a Lenovo thinkpad x230 with 6 cell main battery as well as a 44++ 9 cell battery and a 19+ six cell battery configuration (6 +9+6 cell battery configuration). My queries are1. Can all three of the batteries work in conjunction without any issues?2. Do i need to charge the batteries separately or they all get charged simultaneously while i plug a charger in the laptop?3. Is there any other battery option ( like a 9 cell main plus a 44++ 9 cell and a 19+ 6 cell, i.e. 9+9+6 cells) that can work ?

Hi guys, I have a ThinkPad x230 2325CN3 with an i5 3320m and 8 GB of RAM (4 initially installed, 4 installed by myself - both of same label). My BIOS Version is 2.65. I have the problem that I can't run my Gigabyte GTX 560 TI which I connected through Pe4L v2.1b to the expresscard-slot of my TP. I already tried several things such as changing the pins on the Pe4l in every way, I tried to DSDT-Override my system which turned out to have destroyed my whole system so I had to do a new setup of Windows. Can anyone help me out whit this issue? There have been several identical issues that could be fixed with a former BIOS Update already in 2012 but apparently my system won't do it with this update... I refer to this thread: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X230-expresscard-adressing-eGPU/td-p/792909 I hope you guys can help me out or give me a hint what I could try more; I won't like to damage my system one more time with the DSDT so I hope there maybe is another option. Screenshot of my Device-Manager: ? Thanks in advance,Manuel

Hi,I've bought a used Lenovo X230 & it came without the hard drive for security reasons.I've then bought a new corsair force GT 90gb SSD & hooked up an external dvd/cd rom & inserted the Windows 7 Ultimate x64 disc & started to install the Windows.I then after around 5 minutes get a message that Windows can't be installed :-/Now when I turn on the Thinkpad I keep getting the "BOOTMGR is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" If I press ENTER I can get in to BIOS,but it never gives me the option to boot from my Toshiba external drive even with it showing in BIOS.How can I get the Thinkpad to boot from the disc again ?I have the Toshiba drive as 1st boot option, but it does not give me a message like "Press any key to boot from dvd" like I would on my PC etc..................... Any help more than welcome.

Answer:Help with Thinkpad X230 booting problem :-/

As it won't let me install on the corsair SSD,I've just tried a brand new 250gb WD 2.5" HDD & for some reason it does not fit :-/ Why is this ? The WD is a little chunkier than the SSD but I would have thought all 2.5 SSD's & HDD's would fit in to this netbook.

Hi all!I have ThinkPad x230 with preinstalled 64-bit Windows 7. Laptop has UEFI support, but current mode is "Legacy". I want to replace HDD with SSD and also reinstall Windows using UEFI (later I also plan to install Linux as second OS).I've searched and found [url=http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Knowledge-Base/Prepare-an-usb-thumb-drive-to-boot-windows-7-in... article[/url] with nice instructions about switching to UEFI. But what about ThinkVantage functionality? In some articles I've found information that several features will be unavailable when UEFI used (for exmaple fingerprint reader). Is it safe to switch to UEFI?Thanks a lot and sorry for my bad English.

Answer:ThinkVantage on ThinkPad x230 with UEFI

If you plan to use Win7 there is no benefit to installing in UEFI mode.  The reason is, because Win7 itself requires the CSM (compatiblity support module) which is basically all of the legacy BIOS features, even when Win7 is installed in UEFI mode.

As for the fingerprint issues you read about in the forum, those were all fixed a while ago, so there won't be any issue.  But some other Lenovo apps, such as Rescue and Recovery, won't work on Win7 in UEFI mode.  And within Lenovo, we don't do any testing on Win7 UEFI mode, so I'm not sure what other problems you might run into.

My strong advice is to use legacy mode for Win7, and UEFI mode for Win8.

Recently I purchased x230. My 3G is not working. I don't find any device on device manager. How do I know, which built in 3g module is installed on my laptop? or is there any option to enable it? I saw the specification, it is showing the 3g is in built. Please help me out. I put my sim, but no luck.

Answer:ThinkPad X230 WWAN card for 3G

If your laptop model isn't CTO follow the link below and type in Machine-Type-Model (MTM) within Quick Path field:http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/default.pageIf short description of your laptop specification includes "WWAN" statement wwan card SHOULD be factory preinstalled. "WWAN option" isn't the same, it means laptop is WWAN ready, i.e.has built in wwan antennas and sim card holder only, but not the card itself.Follow this link:http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/partsLookup.pageType in your laptop serial number and find out WWAN card model if it was preinstalled into your laptop. You might find out something like the strings below depending of your area:04W3785 - Gobi300004W3786 - H5321gw04W3788 - MC770004W3791 - MC775004W3792 - MC770004W3821 - Sierra MC771060Y3257 - Gobi3 WWAN60Y3267 - F5521 Mal60Y3297 - H5321w

These are Lenovo approved wwan cards p/ns (FRU) for x230 and their short descriptions
Post here your results, we'll see what to do further.

Hey, Im planning to order a x230 soon, and I was wondering, if I choose not to have an expresscard reader, will there just be a hole there? I've heard people say their left palm wrest is really flimsy. Is it like that with and without an expresscard reader? Thanks

Answer:Thinkpad x230 expresscard question

Yep, there is just the slot for the card covered by a very flimsy feeling flap. That section of the palmrest flexes a lot. I haven't tried putting a filler piece in but that would probably solve the problem. Aftermarket (i.e. non-OE) expresscards should work fine and are a fraction of the cost.

Just installed Windows 8.1 Professional and tried to update all drivers via System Update. After that i installed latest Ericsson drivers (H5321 gw mobile broadband network adapter), and.... nothing! 3G is not working at all, because Windows says "Device cannot start. OK, i found a solution. To enable 3G you should first install firmware update. Before doing so, make sure all network adapters are disabled - or just turn "Flight Mode" and flash new Ericsson firmware. Then install drivers as usual.

I recently had a problem where my X230 i7 would not power up. It was sent away for repair under warranty. The repair centre replaced the system board and sent it back. I found that the original hard disk and the disks from my other 200 series laptop would not boot up. when I rang the support centre they said that the new level of system board is incompatible with existing disks. they then sent me a set of factory image DVDs which I installed successfully giving me the basic factory default installation. I then tried doing a restore of my original system onto this disk which was unsuccessful. I rang the support centre and described the problem they said that the new updated system board will not support a windows restore.I asked if this was going to affect other users who have new system boards fitted, to which they assumed that it would but I was probably the first to experience this.Just wanted others to know of this and to ask if anyone has a solution rather than re-installing all my programs and configuration from sctratch. Bob

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (which I love dearly) and have a few question about ports and booting.  I would first like to verify that the port on the left side of the laptop directly above one of the USB ports is indeed an ExpressCard 54.  I have searched the web, but have yet to find a definite answer, and my user manual simply stated "ExpressCard."  Furthermore, I would like to know if it is possible to boot an operating system from said port using an ExpressCard 34 SSD (64GB).  I have the intention of installing openSUSE 12.3 to the potential SSD and be able to boot from it.  I greatly appreciate any help.  I  would post an image of said port, but I am being told the image file is much too large.

I have thinkpad x230 tablet, and I have mixed feeling about it. It is a quite powerful one, does most of the job but have too many design flaws - broken rubber latch after a while and rubber buffers in the bottom etc.,  I hate the new gen x240 laptop, especially the X series convertible laptop is discontinued. Stupid, in my opinion, yoga design. I, no way, want to flip the keyboard to any surface. Especially on a field trip. X240 discontinues Express Card slot, no thunderbolt, no digitizer. The removal of trackpoint 3 click buttons, which were combined with the trackpad. People complain a lot when they accidentally click the trackpad while typing. I am a trackpoint person, not trackpad person. So the removal was **** retarded, anti consumer, anti Thinkpad legacy!Pls, see this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jb7p3VkQCOo. I did not made this video but 100% agree with this guy.  In addition, it seems to me that newer generations Intel core processor (4th and upcoming 5th) was weeker than ivy bridge processor because Ivy Bridge processors are full power 35W, now, everything is low powered to save the battery life. I have a few questions: 1.Is there anyway, or any company that can make a better thinkpad x230 tablet screen (say upgrading the screen from 1366x768 to higher resolution, improving wacom pen digitizer on the edges 2. Is there any laptop on the market that has express card or thunderbolt, touch screen, digitize... Read more

I'm the lucky recipient of an early ThinkPad X230, it's a review I got yesterday and have had about 24 hours to mess with now (well, I did sleep, so make that 16).  Happy to answer any questions, I'll copy and paste below much of what I wrote in the preview on LaptopReviews.com minus some of the images and video to be bandwidth friendly.   Earlier this week Lenovo announced the ThinkPad X230, a 12.5? screen ultraportable targeted at business buyers. While the X230 won?t go on sale via Lenovo.com until June 2012 (keep an eye on this X230 product page for availablility) we were lucky enough to receive an early review sample to try out. As most of you familiar with the ThinkPad brand know, change is generally slow from one generation to the next to keep the enterprise buying folks from getting all worked up. One thing that certainly almost never changed much was the keyboard. Until now that is.  The X230 and the rest of the ThinkPad line have adopted a new keyboard styling that uses an island style key layout and drops down to six rows of keys from seven. There are a few other changes and added features, the keyboard backlighting being my personal favorite, but for the most part the X230 is just an evolution of the X220 design wise and of course has updated internal components to boost performance.Keyboard Comparison with X220Let?s jump right to the part a lot of people are interested in hearing about -- the keyboard.  Again, a video helps to ...
