Storage upgrade issues: ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build] and ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3

Question: Storage upgrade issues: ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build] and ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3

Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2½" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1 The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install. I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B]. Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2 I would like to populate the empty 2½" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015]. Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Good morning, I have a X230 with win7, when a users docks it after being a sleep for extended time, it wont wake up. She has to undock, turn it on, shut it down, then dock it and then it will work. I have updated power drivers, windows is up to date, not sure what else to do. Any advice? Oh yea, to make troubleshooting easier, the bloody problem is also intermitten, yay!

Just a warning to x230 tablet owners considering the ThinkPad Ultrabase Series 3 (0A33932). The displayport on the ultrabase seems to be less capable than the displayport on the x230 itself. 1. The Ultrabase displayport does NOT support YCbCr coding, the x230 displayport does. 2. The Ultrabase displayport does NOT support audio output, the x230 displayport supports full 7.1 channel sound. This is at least the case under windows 8 x64 and using startech DP2HDMI2 displayport to hdmi adapter. If there is a way to get YCbCr or sound out of the ultrabase displayport I have not found it. Is it possible the ultrabase port is not a DP++ port? The port on the x230 is definately DP++

Hi All, My first post here...sadly it's not in praise of the thinkpad line. We have two IBM Thinkpad R50e's at work, and was quite impressed with the build quality. Up to now they're holding up quite nicely...which is what made me want a thinkpad. i finally got my hands on a thinkpad x230 last week....and when i opened it, the plastic bezel on the top right corner of the lid popped out On closer inspection i noticed that the top right corner flexed, right where the strip of plastic at the edge meets the LCD display, and with it the bezel. At rest the two pieces don't line up properly. The leftmost corner of the lid showed no flexing at all. i seriously doubt if this was caused by mishandling during shipping. The box only had minor bumps, and none of them seem to line up with where the damage was. i've gone to the local service center here, who informed me that this isn't covered by the warranty. i am currently awaitnig a quote for the part that i will have to pay out of my own pocket, on top of the price i paid for thinkpad "quality". On top of that, there's this annoying battery wiggle. The service center that this is normal...which is quite disappointing, since the battery on my old Asus EEEPC1000, after all these years, has not shown even the slightest wiggle after all these years of abuse. Needless to say i am very disappointed. Sorry to say this but this will most likely be my first and last Lenovo. i am willing to pay a premium for qu... Read more

Answer:thinkpad x230 build quality issues

There's an explanation for the battery wiggle, all systems are like that. Even the X131e. My old laptop used as a workstation has a bad battery, but I took it out so it's temperature can stay at a stable level. I find the "used by NASA" a total bluff as the Space Station relies on older ThinkPad systems, since they were modified to be in 0 gravity environments. Sorry to hear that your X230's bezel popped out, mine doesn't suffer this so I'm presuming it's batch was a little lemony. I had another X230 which I returned for a full refund and waited a year and ordered again. It's a little ridiculous, because Lenovo normally sells nice systems but they're cheapening out over the years.

Answer:Is X200 UltraBase compatible with ThinkPad X230?

X200 ultrabase is not compatible with X220/t or X230/t. You need a series 3 ultrabase instead for the x230.

I got an X220 Tablet, and so far the only ill-conceived design fad of mine has to do with the ethernet port location (in combination with 'laptop mode' and having a right-handed mouse thing going on...). I'm looking into the ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3, but I've yet to find detailed pics of where the actual ports are located. Can anyone help/provide some pictures or perhaps a video?

Answer:ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 info?

Howdy, All ports are located on the back like a traditional dock.  So, if you're sitting in front of the machine, NOT looking at the back, the ports are as follows from left to right; power, ethernet, Display port, VGA port, Audio jacks, 4 USB ports in a horizontal line. Personally, I was supremely disappointed that the X220 fits the series 3 mini dock, but the X220T doesn't.  I wanted the DVI port.  Oh well...  Hope this helps...

I bought an Ultrabase Series 3 for my x230 which runs windows 10. The optical drive works, the audio works, I have not tested the HDMI, but the USB ports do not work at all. I assume the problem is that I need drivers for the USB 3.0 slots. I have been all over the Lenovo support site, but find nothing. Either I missed it, or Lenovo has decided not to support them,  Perhaps somebody else has had this problem and has solved it? I did find drivers listed for download at an alternate site, but my AV software indicated that there is a virus in the download.

Answer:ultrabase series 3 drivers for x230 for windows 10

Apparently, the present driver for the station is 10.0.16299.15 which sounds like a Windiows 10 driver, but it has a date of 6/21/2006

Hi. I'm posting this here as the ultrabase is meant only for the x series. I'm thinking of grabbing the ultrabase together with the x230, as it would be much cheaper this way.I will probably use it 80% of the time in the office, 8-10 hrs a day, 5-6 days a week. Would love the output to a big monitor, ext keyboard. The ultrabase dock seems to be a nice solution. But I'm also very extremely **bleep** about heat... especially with my long-usage patterns. Are there enough clearance between the x230 and the ultrabase for air to flow sufficiently? I am also considering using the USB 3.0 Dock (part no. 0A33970)http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?...for connection instead, and have a good cooling pad below the x230. Any thoughts or suggestions? Much appreciated thanks

Answer:X230 and the ultrabase (Series 3): Enough clearance below for ventilation?

Hey Jame5,

I have a X230 with thinkpad ultrabase series 3 here at work and was wondering what I could do to provide any information that would help you make a more informed decision. I would be more then happy to run any test you want or heating tests that could help you out. I love this X230 and the docks is great, yet the clearance is not enough to say see the light from one side from the other or really provide any really lanes for air flow. I have had no heat issues but like I said I can run heat monitor to tell you readings if you want over a period of time.

Best Regards,

Hello,I have Thinkpad X230 with Core i5-3320m and wonder if i can upgrade the CPU.The information I have found on the subject is quite controversial. Some sites say that the CPU is soldered to the motherboard, and others say that it is possible.Anyone know some information about it? If this is possible I had thought of these two CPUs: i7-3632qm  and i7-3820qm.The first is 35W, so I not see anyproblem(which carries the notebook is also 35W).The second one is 45W ,so maybe it is not very appropriate. What you think about this?

Hey Hi,  I am planning to upgrade my Thinkpad X230s memory to 8GB. I have few questions, it would be a great help if someone can help me.1) Is it better to use 2x4GB configuration or 1x8GB? What are the advantages? (Does Thinkpad X230 support dual channel configuration?)2) CPU-Z shows that my current RAM is running at 1.5 V. Can I put two 4GB RAM running at 1.35V? (Does Thinkpad X230 support DDR3L type memory?)3) What would happen if I use two RAM having different CAS latency? Thanks in advance.

I have a ThinkPad X230 with a 500Gb hard drive (2306-CTO). When I purchased it, I also purchased a Lenovo Slim USB Portable DVD Burner (DY-8A8NH13C). The DVD device works well to install some software from a CD or DVD. I want to consider upgrading this computer to a 1Tb hard drive (0A65633) 1. Will the 0A65633 1 Tb hard drive fit in the X230. That is, replace the existing drive with the new 1 Tb drive?2. The 1 Tb drive is 5400-rpm whereas the existing 500 Gb drive is 7200-rpm. It has been nearly 10 years that I have used anything slower that 7200-rpm. Will the 1 Tb drive be slow?3. Since if is a new drive (no recovery partitions), can I order Recovery DVD's from Lenovo for the X230?  I think I can.4. Can I boot the first Recovery DVD from the USB Slim DVD device?  Will that work? or do I need to purchase a Docking station? 5. I have not changed UEFI security at all in the BIOS. Can I just boot the Recovery DVD?  and will it even install? I imagine I might do this in November after Windows 8.1 is released and combine the two upgrades (hard drive and Windows 8.1) into one exercise. I also might wait until a faster 1 Tb drive is released. Do you imagine fast 1 Tb hard drives in the near future? Thank you, .... JDH

Answer:Upgrade a ThinkPad X230

1. The 0A65633 is a 9.5 mm drive, so it won't fit the X230. It requires 7 mm drives. 2. The speed of the drive is not only dependent on the RPM of the drive, there are other factors too i.e. amount of drive memory cache, etc. Since the density of the data of the 1TB drive more than 500 GB drive, then for each rotation theoretically the reader/writer head should also pick up/write more data thus making it faster. 3. Yes you can. Or make your own. 4. Yes you can. Or use a USB thumb drive to recover from. Fast platter hdd? The technology of platter will only allow so much data to be read, we are pretty much at the technological dead end with the current platter hdd in terms of transfer rate. Don't expect revolutionary breakthrough with the current platter hdd, i am expecting only tiny speed increase increments. I mean if you need speed, use a mSATA drive (maybe 64 gigs one) to act as a cache drive with Lenovo ExpressCache software, or get a SSHD (which is basically a platter hdd with SSD cache installed) pretty much same as the mSATA + normal spinning platter in terms of how it works.

Hallo, I have a problem with my 3 yo X230 where the battery is fast empty, only 20 minutes from full charging although I only open 1 program (Excel/word/etc.). Should I change the battery ? In lenovoquickpick.com, the battery seems for type X230T (Part number: 0A36317). Can it be used for X230 ? From the picture shown in web, it is different from the battery installed in my laptop (4 cells). Now I am in Germany and quit difficult to find Lenovo people who can speak English well. Thank you

It's been about 5 months since I started to use my Thinkpad  X230.  Only three days ago it could work for 5-6 hours without charging.  I could charge it at home, bring it to school and use it without charging.  But suddenly the battery started to die in a short amount of time.  Then I explored the battery settings a little bit.  I found out it says "Battery Condition: poor" and "Your battery can 47% of its original full charge capacity."   It has warranty until 2015. So can Lenovo send me a new battery if I want so? Or is it a problem that warranty doesn't cover? Please help!!

Answer:Thinkpad X230 Battery issues

Well, a few things. 1.  The warranty you mention sounds like it is for the system.  The system and battery typically have different warranty terms.  Unless of course you did order an additional battery warranty. 2.  However, the base battery warranty is one year, so if you contact them they should get you a replacement since you are only a few months into ownership. Good luck!

Hey hi After finally recovering my system to factory settings. I have a question and please bear with me. If i upgrade(not clean install) to windows 8 pro, how will it affect my Lenovo_Recovery partition? Will I be able to if in case required,  revert back to my windows 7 factory setting using F11 keys during boot up? Or this functionality will get erased and my recovery partition will be of no use. Also if i do clean install, I have read it that your windows will not activate as its an upgrade. In that case you need to call Microsoft and explain them your predicament and if its your lucky day you might get it activated. There are some other methods probably not legal to overcome this. Please share your view on that. Also how would re-clean install will affect the activation/system? Please reply. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Thinkpad X230 Windows 8 pro upgrade

Hi, neeraj_schrody

I've never personally done this upgrade, but I think it should technically work like you think it would. If an upgrade to Windows 8 is performed, then this should be installed over the partition that Windows 7 is using, which is not the recovery partition. If you made sure that the recovery partition was not formatted during the upgrade, then I believe it would remain there and the system would be recoverable through this. However, please keep in mind that this is what should be technically possible and is my thoughts, not a fact.

As far as the activation goes, I do not think you will run into any issues. These errors in your post normally only occur when certain criteria for updating are not met. Provided you are running a legitimate copy of Windows 7, which you are, there should be no issues when upgrading.

Hope it helps,Adam

I have no clue what happened but I have 2 office setups with docking stations, same hardware. Lenovo X230 Laptop (integrated graphics)Ultrabase Series 3 Docking Station (1 VGA, 1 Displayport) The difference though is at the office I have a DisplayPort monitor connected directly ot the dock and a VGA Monitor. At Home, I have a VGA monitor and Displayport to HDMI Adapter connected to the dock. Both were working at one point. All of a sudden, nothing plugged in the Displayport is being recognized by Windows in both office setups. I cannot even choose the monitor, and the monitor says no signal is coming. I need to get this fixed. The only monitor that always works is the laptop monitor and VGA, nothing pluggin in displayport is generating a signal in both setups listed above. Any ideas?

Answer:X230 with Ultrabase Series Base 3 - Dual Monitor Problems

Hi, sprasad03

There are a few software and driver updates available for your machine (found here), but I think your issue is hardware-related. It could either be that the DisplayPort port on the machine is no longer working, or it could be that the DisplayPort to HDMI adapter has died. If possible, I would test both components on their own and see if either of them fail.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I have just completed a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and all went well except for the screen brightness issue. Anyone have any ideas where I can simply increase this as I have searched everywhere for screen brightness, even BIOS for any setting for display. I have latest update to display driver. I have two other laptops and each shows much brighter than this one and I am surely disappointed in this display. Not sure if it is because this screen is touch enabled and also works off keyboard that could be the issue and a separate setting could be involved on the touch side of the display as it does work with a stylus pen or touch also. thanks and   I hope I can get this brightness to increase somewhat as it is too hazy for me.

I am looking to buy either an X220 or X230 Thinkpad laptop and have been reading the forums here for information about wake from sleep issues for these two machines. I have found a lot on the X220 - seems to be a common problem, so I am now thinking that isn't going to be my choice. My questions for those who may have experienced this with an X230: -is the wake from sleep a common issue with the X230 laptop?-is this more of a SSD issue than a regular HHD?-is this related to the amount of RAM installed?-is this more of a Win 7 issue? If so, any version that is more susceptible? I had an HP laptop that finally was unusable due to this issue and want to avoid that with a new laptop. I really like the features and size of the x230 - and that I can still get Win 7. Any input on how often the X230 has this type of issue - and any solutions that have worked - would be greatly appreciated, as I really am reluctant to have history repeated with this wake from sleep issue. Thanks!HL

Hi All,   I am new to lenovo so please help me to decide, I have purchased the x230 with thinkpad 1X1 b/g/n which only connects maximum at 72mbps. I tried all the settings in the router and network card, (changing channel to 40Hz ). I am bit disppointed since this card says it can do 150mpbs but never reaches the maximum speed more than 27mbps whereas my wifes MBP reaches 70Mbps. I am really disappointed with the wifi performance and thought of returning the machine now.  Question1: Can i replace the wifi card myself? i am too scared to look inside the laptop if that voids my warranty whether thinkpad 1X1 have two antennas connecting to the wifi card? will that have any impact on my warranty? Question 2:is Intel 6250 a good option to buy? ( I know there is a whitelisting/blacklisting), i am simply asking this since i am not sure the wifi card will fit in with the number antenna wires that will be avilable to fix a dual band (2X2) card.  Will anyone be able to help me with this situation? Thanks in advance , i need a speeder reponse since i have to return the machine by tomorrow.

Q1. Lenovo doesn't consider the palmrest and wireless card a customer replaceable part. While, i have personally done to the upgrade from the 1x1 b/g/n to the intel 6205. It isn't very hard, just do it slowly and have an-anti-static wrist strap on.Q2. 6250 is the 2x2 card with Wimax, do you use wimax? The 1x1 card and 2x2 card both uses 2 antenna, the 3x3 uses 3 antenna (i.e. intel 6300). http://www.flickr.com/photos/lead_org/8276716468/in/set-72157631966265223/lightbox/The X230 in that picture has the 1x1 card (prior to replacement), and the X220 in that picture has the 2x2 intel 6205. =========If you can return it and reorder then it would be the best.

Hi everyone:I am considering to upgrade my wireless adapter for my laptop. Currently I am using Thinkpad X230 Tablet with Intel Centrino Wireless N 2200. My laptop has bluetooth. I have questions:1. Does the bluetooth come with my wireless adapter? I mean that If I upgrade my wireless card, do I have to buy a card with wifi and bluetooth? 2. I am considering to upgrade to Intel 62205 AN. This is the linkhttp://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=INT-62205&show=p Is that worth to upgrade? (functionality, price, ...)  Is the product compatible with my current Thinkpad X230T?  3. Can I install 2 cards and run silmultanerously . It sounds greedy but I know a software, named "connectify"; it allows laptop to connect many networks silmutanerously, for example: 4G, Lan, wifi.  4. I see some people mention about Intel Ultimate 6300. What additional functionalities do I get compared to 62205  or Intel 2200? Thank you.

Answer:Upgrade Wireless Adapter for Thinkpad X230 Tablet

1. Bluetooth and wireless cards are separate on the ThinkPad X220, X220t, X230, and X230s. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lead_org/8276508687/in/set-721576320273504682. You would need an Intel 6205 card with Lenovo FRU number on it, generic one won't work. 2200 only operates in the 2.4 ghz bandwidth, while the 6205 can operate in both 2.4 and 5 ghz bandwidth. So the question is does your router have 5 ghz bandwidth and support MIMO?3. No you can't. The WWAN/mSATA slot would give an error message saying an unauthorized card is installed (1801 error). 4. 6300 card has 3 x 3 setup and operates in 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz range. Max speed of 450 mpbs6205 has 2 x 2 setup, 2.4/5 ghz range, and max speed of 300 mbps.2200 has 2 x 2 setup, but operates in the 2.4 ghz range and max speed of 300 mbps.

We bought two X230 Tablets for two Professors of our University and I'm responsible for getting them ready to use. Unfortunately the DVD burner isn't recognized in the UltraBase Series 3 that we intended to use together with the X230. I tried it with both of the UltraBase units, with both X230 Tablets and with both DVD burner. Did we buy the wrong devices? Is there any driver necessary? The DVD burner is not listed at all in the device manager (Windows 7), not even with missing driver. I can't open the disc tray and the LED is not on. Please help!!!

Answer:X230 Table doesn't detect DVD Multi IV Ultrabay Slim in UltraBase Series 3

Try to set this in BIOS: Security -> I/O Port Access -> Ultrabay (HDD/Optical) -> Enabled

I have a ThinkPad W520-4282. I want to use a ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 (170W) [pn 433830U] at work and a Lenovo USB 2.0 Port Replicator with Digital Video [0A33942] at home.I did not have to install any drivers for the Mini Dock and it worked just fine driving an external monitor. After installing the driver for the Port Replicator, I could no longer drive the external monitor when attached to the mini dock or the VGA+ video port on the ThinkPad.I played with a lot of things to fix the situation and nothing worked. I even uninstalled the driver for the Port Replicator and still could not drive an external monitor. In fact the laptop did not even recognize that an external monitor was attached.Later I found using the Device Manager that the NVIDIA Qadro 1000M display adapter was disabled, proabably during installation of the Port Replicator driver. Once I enabled that, I could drive an external monitor again. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? Will I be able to use the Port Replicator if I install the driver again?

Answer:Use ThinkPad W520, ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 and Lenovo USB 2.0 Port Replicator together???

Dear all, would like to inquire if X220 will operate with two external monitor? I'm ok to close the lid of my X220.The 4337 docks support VGA and DVI, will both work together? What's working:- I have been using x220 screen with another external monitor through VGA connection.- Connecting Dell 2340L direct to VGA works with X220 screen, not with 2 external monitor. What's not working:- Recently got a Dell 2340L which contains only VGA and HDMI, which I thought HDMI would work with an adaptor (HDMI to DVI) port - no response although the Windows 7 detects external monitor display.

When I dock the computer and press the power button on the dock it doesn't recognize my monitor as the main screen. I have to hit a key (Windows 10) and put in my password hoping that it's doing that and then the screen comes up. If I reboot after that ... THEN.... it recognizes my screen as the main monitor. How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

Hello everyone, I have a R61e (7649) and am thinking of upgrading the HDD, I looked around the online service manuals, but could not find is the HDD is SATA or SATA II. I am not familiar with these two technologies, are they interchangeable, also is there a limit on the size I can install, currently I stopped my eye on a 320GB HDD, is there anything else important Ishould know before purchasing and upgrading. Thank you all

Answer:ThinkPad R Series HDD Upgrade

The drive in your machine is SATA 1.5 but it will take SATA 3.0, although the latter will work at 1.5 speeds only. Hope this helps.

When I power up the laptop, it lights up & shows nothing but a black screen. The lights below the screen (such as the 'Battery' light) are blinking, but when the laptop starts up, it makes no noise & shows no logo. I was using it yesterday (May 7th) on Firefox & it suddenly blacked out. I rebooted it using the power button & logged in, but within a few minutes the screen was black again. Already called up Lenovo Premium Support and they told me to call the Hardware Manufacturers (not sure if that's exactly what they're called) & we're not exactly willing to pay for service.A few months ago we had done a System Reset that cleared everything since we've had it nearly 4 years, and it's been working fine & properly since then, but we don't know what went wrong.Help?

Hello,The laptop in question will not charge with the above mentioned dock when it previously did. If you shut down the mahcine and turn it back on when docked it works, but after this point if undocked and docked again it seems to lose it's ability to charge via the dock giving the "plugged in but not charging" message on the power system icon from the taskbar. As it stands the laptop can be charged by the AC port on the back and as mentioned when given a power cycle on the dock. The above issue happens on several docks with different power supplies. The laptop is no longer in warranty and it is possible to get this sent back and repaired (paying for the service) if that is an option. This is greatly inconvenient for the user affected and is causing disruption daily.

Hello, I was bought a Thinkpad S440 (20AY006EUK, MP04KBEB) recently with a 128 GB SSD. I'm looking to upgrade on my storage space so I can store all my media on it.  Am I correct in thinking there's a slot for another ssd or hard drive? If so, what type of SSD would fit in it? I had previously bought the Crucial M500 240GB mSATA Internal SSD on the advice of a friend but we couldn't find any space to fit it. I'd rather add in a new storage drive rather than replace my current one as then I'd not know what to do with the smaller one, and it works very well in the laptop currently. Any recommendations as to what to buy?  Appreciate any help, cheers

I have an X230 running Windows 8 and an Ultrabase 3 with DVD writer.  Windows is fully patched by System Update and Windows update.  I have two issues: 1. When docked, I just get the ThinkPad logo onscreen, the laptop will not continue booting until it is undocked.2. When Booted, the keyboard and mouse plugged into the dock don't work until the laptop is undocked then docked again. Both these are intermittent and I haven't established the pattern yet so I can't reproduce them on demand. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Answer:X230 and ultrabase boot issues

I've had similar issues. But have found that if I remove the DVD drive from the Ultrabase 3 everything works as it should.

Hi, I've got a Thinkpad Mini Dock Series 3 and a T410. After not using the dock for ~3 months while I was away from home, I re returned and attempted to use it only to find that there were several connectivity issues with it: 1) The DVI connection does not work at all.2) The DisplayPort connection requires me to fiddle with it every time to get my T410 to recognize it.3) The audio jack is only giving me sound from my left speakers. This is really frustrating, particularly how I have to fiddle with the DisplayPort connection every time, because I have 2 external monitors. Has anyone run into these issues before? Thanks!

I've owned a ThinkPad SL510 since 2009, been rather happy until I installed the Windows 7 Professional upgrade disc onto it. After using Word 2007 on it for a while, it hanged completely. BIOS and swapping the RAM around fixed it temporarily but it came back after a month. Turns out that it's the registry that's very messy. I installed CCleaner and ran it a few times on the registry cleaner, it got rid of a lot of invalid registries. Before this I installed WIndows 7 Ultimate, fresh copy with nothing Lenovo related and I had no issues whatsoever.  Buggy Windows preinstalls are the culprits but the solution is just simple. When you've reinstalled your OS that came with the laptop, please download and run CCleaner and run it a few times on the registry cleaner till the registry errors list are empty. I have had no issue since I ran it. Believe me it'll stop you from stressing out from the freeze ups and you wouldn't have to send it in for repairs for no reason!

Answer:Driver matrices for Win8 upgrade-capable systems - ThinkPad X Series Tablet

The x61 tablet runs windows 8 pretty well as it is but there is one important thing missing. The tablet buttons do not work properly. There are workarounds since the system still recognises button presses as keypresses but they are cumbersome (see http://thinkwiki.de/Tablet-Buttons_des_X61_Tablets_unter_Windows_8).

Hi, Symptom: There is no sound coming from the headphones plug on my UltraBase. Meanwhile, the headphones plug on my X200 Tablet works fine. It also works when the tablet is plugged into the UltraBase? I have tried to reboot with the headphones plugged into the UltraBase, but with same result. Also, it does not appear to be sound-source dependent. Listening to sound from the CD-player and youtube.com yielded the same result; no sound when plugged into the UltraBase. System Description: Windows 7, 64-bitThinkPad X200 Tablet, Type: 7448, Model: CTOThinkPad X200 UltraBaseBIOS version 3.11 BR,Bjorn

You have the latest Connexant Audio drivers right ? Do the other ports on the Ultrabase work fine - Like USB ?Test the Microfone slot too and see if you get any sound in.Other than that i can't think of anything other than a hardware failure.

I use the X6 base at work (so I don't have to daily re-connect the cables for external monitor and ethernet) and remove the X61 to use at home. Running XP, SP3. There used to be no problem with hibernating, undocking, then re-docking-waking up next morning, whether a battery was in the Ultrabase or not, whether I pushed the undocking button or not. Now: With or without battery installed in the computer, the computer will not boot or come out of hibernation or restart if it is attached to the Ultrabase. The power light comes on and the fans come on, but the HD never engages - kind of as if it immediately re-go into hibernation or standby . If the battery is in the X61, I can lift the computer off the dock, start it up (whether from hibernation or off) and put it back on the base and it continues to come up. I am not sure, but this may have started after I installed XP SP3. There is no problem at all when the Ultrabase is not involved No matter how I start the computer or dock it, the "docked" light on the Ultrabase never comes on - only the "undocked" light is lit. As you may have guessed, the USB ports on the Ultrabase do not work either. I have tried all the combinations of EasyEject, etc without a difference. On the rare occasions when for some reason the "docked" does come on, I undock using EasyEject, but the problem persists. Does anyone have any advice and experience with this? We have a problem with Lenovo X201 ultrabase  and wireless keyboard and mouse.
Problem is with wireless reciever (one reciever for both accesories). When is in the notebook usb port, it works fine but it doesn't work in usb port on the ultrabase or in usb on lcd. When I put it to notebook, reciever starts light. In other usb not.
All accesories is from lenovo. Do you know any solutions for that problem?
I am very confused about it...

We have a thinkpad X201-3249 with Ultrabse X200 Dock PN# 43R8781 We are trying to setup dual monitors but there is nothing detected on our DVI monitor hooked up via Lenovo Displayport-to-DVI Cable. We even tried hooking up just one monitor using that cable to the ultrabase , it still doesn't get detected . The monitor is Viewsonic VX2234 22" DVI. It works fine when plugged via VGA cable to the Ultrabase but not via Displayport. This X201 model doesn't have a display port on the laptop itslef but as Lenovo assured us any X201 model is capable of running 2 monitors via Ultrabase dock. This particluar X201 has Intel HD graphics. Does anyone have any tips as to what we could try ? This is not even a case of running 2 monitors, but simply even just running one DVI monitor via the Displayport on the Ultrabse using the DP-DVI Cable from Lenovo. TIA.

I just upgraded my R61i from a T2370 to a T8100.  I have also added 4 GB's of 667Mhz RAM and a 120 GB SSD.  The computer is very fast now and I love it.   However, now my battery went from 2 hours of life to 30 Minutes!  One thing I did not do was update the BIOS to Middleton.  Everything worked out of the box, so I thought I wouldn't need to. Anyone know how to fix the battery issue?

My Thinkpad Yoga 14 is now basically a standalone CPU, and not a laptop/tablet since my Windows 10 upgrade.  The speakers did not work -- that was easy to fix.  The keyboard on the laptop will not work, and the tablet will not rotate.  I have tried so many suggestions to fix it, but it is now rendered just a cpu with external keyboard, mouse and monitor.  This is very disappointing.  Any ideas on how to fix the keyboard and tablet rotation features?

I seem to be getting random stop errors whenever I attach the Ultrabase 3 to my new X220 Tablet.  On several occasions I have also experienced the Optical Drive hanging or loosing connection. W hen I do not have the Ultrabase attached I have not experienced these problems, even when I attach a USB external optical drive.  X220 is a model 4296 37U with 8 Gb ram and I have upgraded the 320 Mb hard drive to a Intel 320 series 600 Gb SSD.  Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem with the Ultrabase with their laptops?

Hi Forum, My personal laptop is Lenovo THINKPAD T500 2055, and its main specifications are as follows: - Intel Core 2 Duo processor T9400 (2.53GHz 1066MHz 6MBL2)- 8 GB DDR3 SDRAM Memory Module 4 GB (2 x 4 GB) 1066MHz DDR31066/PC38500 DDR3 SDRAM SoDIMM Kingston.- 2 GB Intel Turbo Memory hard drive cache.- ATI Mobility Radeon 3650 with 256MB.- 160 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm.  Currently I am seriously considering buying SSD, and my questions are as follows: 1) Will Intel SSD 520 Series 2.5 inch 180GB 6GB/S MLC Resell 25nm work alright with my laptop without any issues? 2) Which is better: Intel SSD 520 Series or Intel SSD 330/320 Series ?  I would greatly appreciate your support and inputs!

Answer:Lenovo THINKPAD T500 2055: Intel SSD 520 Series or 330/320 Series ?

Guys, I posted my questions here because I am concerned about incompatibility issues: T500 <=> SSD. Also, I read that: 2.5" SSD does not fit into HDD holder for the laptop (T410), Ref:  (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/2-5-quot-SSD-does-not-fit-into-HDD-holder-f...), So, I am worry that If I bought Intel SSD 520 Series 2.5, then, it won't fit properly. Another concern is that my current laptop has 2 GB Intel Turbo Memory hard drive cache, If I got SSD, then, should I remove the Turbo or disable it? What happens if I left it as it is without removing nor disabling?

I recently purchased a Yoga 11e 20d9 model and so far I'm loving it.  However, I wanted to upgrade the memory from 4gb to 8gb.  I purchased Crucial 8GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) as all the reviews I read said this was okay to use, however, everytime I install the memory and I try to charge the laptop at the same time it crashes.  I can run windows 10 perfectly without issue up until I try to charge it.  I can charge ther laptop when the laptop is off but for the life of me I can't get it to coexist.  I installed the original ram and everything works perfectly.   Even if I'm in bios, as soon as I plug in the charger the laptop will crash.  It literally has rips on the screen and everything fades out.  As soon as I unplug it, the laptop works flawlessly.   I returned the memory and got a replacement and it does the same exact thing.  I updated both the BIOS and battery firmware.  I am out of ideas.  Any help would be appreciated.

Have hit audio issues with upgrade to Windows 10 from originaly shipped W8.1. At first the issue showed up as failed Flash/Shockwave in Edge and IE11. Diagnosed down to an upgrade of the original Conexant SmartAudio HD driver. If I reverted to the original W8.1 driver Flash/Shockwave started working again and audio (including Dolby) worked fine. However, Windows update constantly tried to re-upgrade the Conexant Driver requiring me to constantly revert back. Now with Windows 10 TH2 upgrade I can no longer seem to be able to revert and am stuck on Conexant CX20751 SmartAudio HD version 8.66.16.50 (2015/9/7) even though the downloadable package for my machine J9ABO6WW shows version 8.65.17.50 (2015/6/09) is current. I have tried downloading it and re-installing after deleteing all drivers and CONEXANT packages and still it forces back to the 8.6616.50 driver. What's more - I now have a second instance in Device Manager under Sound,Video and Game of a driver named High Definition Audio Device with a file version 10.0.10586.0 th_2 release 151029-1700 by Microsoft! If I delete this driver/device, audio stops working completely. If I disable it, audio works (including Dolby) and Flash/Shockwave works. If I delete the CONEXANT and leave the Microsoft driver enabled, audio works but Dolby application tells me I have the wrong audio driver installed! Hi, We just deployed a brand new X201 Thinkpad to an enduser.  When connected to the docking station (X200 Ultrabase) and we push power, it takes a good 2 minutes for Windows to begin to load.  The Lenovo splash screen will come up immediately, but then goes blank for 2 minutes, then the Windows is starting logo will finally display.  When not plugged into the docking station, Windows starts up fine.  The problem only happens when plugged into the docking station.  Anyone have any idea how to speed this up?  Thanks.

Two questions: I've been thinking about buying an X230 (or the X1 Carbon), but the more I look the more I think I should take advantage of the ability to upgrade the x230 with both more RAM and a WWAN-fitting SSD by buying the minimum specs available.  The tests I've seen have mostly been with the x230 with the i5 chip and an HDD.  When I compared the i5 and i7 chips (http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-3520M-vs-Intel-Core-i5-3320M) they seemed to be pretty similar.  Is the i5 sufficiently fast with an SSD or would I regret trying to be extra cheap.  Also, is it silly to get a model with an SSD drive already in it, if I'm going to get an mSATA drive anyway? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks,.

Answer:Thinkpad X230 i5 vs i7, HDD vs. SSD

I have an X230 with the i5 CPU and a 500Gb 7200-rpm hard drive. It is plenty fast to do anything I need including having 2 machines running on top of the Windows 8 host (3 separate machines all running at the same time). Even so, I can run anything else I want. It is certainly fast enough to work with an SSD. I did not do SSD because they are not big enough and are still subject to catastrophic failure (no gentle failure for SSD's).  .... JDH

Answer:Thinkpad S1 Yoga screen rotation issues after windows 10 upgrade

Hi sumitgoyal3832
Welcome to the forums. Can you please post the full model number of you Thinkpad S1 Yoga?

I have a different Yoga Machine, but when I upgraded to Windows 10 it took me some work updating the drivers to stabilize it. Maybe you can try to updating the driver.

I try that in this order:
1) Windows Update - Check for any update there
2) Use Lenovo System Update to see if it find any BIOS or Driver update
3) Install Lenovo Settings and Lenovo Companion from the Windows Store.
4) Sometimes some newer drivers does not show on System Update or on Lenovo Companion. Check also the "Lenovo Support Site" with you full model number and check for any driver... you can sort driver by date.

But maybe your computer is a older one and does not have Windows 10 drivers on the Lenovo Site.
In that case I also use "DriverEasy" but that is un-support from Lenovo and AS IS under your own risk. But in my case that tool helped me out a lot to find newer drivers on my machine.
I hope this tips can you some help.

Regards

I'm considering making the switch to a ThinkPad X230, but I need big storage space (right now I keep a HDD in the Ultrabay of my T420s).  Can anyone recommend some 512 GB SSD options?  I want quality and reliability and a good warranty.  I wish Lenovo offered one as I prefer to keep the all the parts backed by Lenovo, but in this case they offer no option so I have to look elsewhere. I have done some searching and the new Samsung 840 Pro Series looks good:http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MZ-7PD512BW There is also an older Samsung 830 Series, and I believe Crucial makes a 512GB option as well. Also, if I add a mSATA SSD under the palm rest, could Lenovo really deny me warranty on unrelated issues in the future because of that?  I buy 3-year and 4-year on-site warranties on my machines (and I have used them), so I do not want to jeapordize my warranty.

As per the query we understood that you are looking for Windows up-gradation for your ThinkPad X230.

Before doing any changes to the OS (Operating System) or with HDD partition we suggest you to create the recovery media and then do the required changes.

Below is the link on how to perform the OS up-gradation from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1, Jonas_hendrickx has provided complete details on that.

After a trip abroad, my laptop suddenly stopped powering on. I brought it home, connected it to a charger, and then tried turning it on. The power light flashed on but nothing happened, so I held it down to hard boot it, let it rest for a minute, and tried turning it on again. Except now nothing at all happens. I've tried buying a new charger, removing the connection of the BIOS battery/laptop battery and holding down the power button for 30 seconds with the battery removed, but it's all to no avail. I notice that when I plug the laptop in, the battery light flashes green a few times. After letting the computer rest for some time, I noticed that when I hit the power button, the green battery light would come on and stay on. However, the fan does not spin up and it gives no obvious signs of life (no other lights, beeps, no screen flashes, etc). The area around the CPU does appear to get warm, however, when plugged in (the heatsink in particular felt hot). The warmth around the CPU area and the flashing battery light lead me to believe that the motherboard is still functional. I fully disassembled and reassembled the laptop with only bare parts but it didn't help. I also peeled off the black sticker shielding to see if there were any obvious signs of damage, such as blown capacitors, but found nothing out of the ordinary. What is wrong with my laptop? Do I just need to go ahead and replace the motherboard? Did I void the 3-year limited warranty with my reassembly... Read more

Answer:Thinkpad x230 won't power on

After all, the battery connects straight to the motherboard, and so does AC power, so it would have to be at least partially functional to give any signs of life via the flashing green battery symbol, no?

Answer:Thinkpad X230 - Maximum RAM

Welcome Jon!The processor you describe could also be used on laptops with 4 memory slots. (8GB x 4 DIMM), therefore techinically the processor supports up to 32GB of RAM.However, ThinkPad X230 motherboard only provides 2 memory slots, which is pretty normal for lightweight machines. Usually, only 15" high-powered machines such as W540 provides option for 4 memory slots. Therefore, you are limited to 16GB on X230.Hope this answers your question.

This might be of some help to those who are thinking of adding RAM to their X230 notebooks and thinking of Transcend RAM modules as an option. In 2013 I had purchased a X230 with 4GB RAM module in single slot. Now when I wanted to add another 8 GB RAM, I saw references to Kingston, Hynix, Samsung, Corsair brands in some posts in this forum. Where I live none of these brands are readily available, only Transcend is available in the shops that I frequent. Today I purchased Transcend DDR3 8GB 1600MHz SODIMM module, CL11 2Rx8 512Mx8 (Part no. TS1GSK64V6H). This is 1.5V module. I have already plugged in this module and system now shows 12GB of RAM  Do note that the RAM ICs on the PCB are Hynix brand and the product is Transcend. Here are the screenshots of CPU-Z tool on Windows 7 Home Professional OS.

Hi All, We've recently upgraded to Wireless AC, and from reading around, I find that there may not be a way to put Wireless AC cards (I've been looking at the Intel AC-7260) in our ThinkPad X230's. Can anyone please confirm if this is true? This BIOS whitelisting is a ridiculous idea. If I pay £1000+ for a laptop, I don't expect restrictions on what hardware I can use with the laptop. Sort it out Lenovo!! Thanks,Oliver

Answer:ThinkPad X230 Wireless AC

Nobody? Nothing? We've got over 900 Lenovo laptops and desktops on-site, and if Lenovo are going to restrict us from doing simple things like change a wireless card, I will definitely be looking at using a different manufacturer when it comes round to refresh time. Disappointing.

If you mean that screen comes back after you press enter on your hard disk? If so it could be. Your hard disk no longer bootable due to Windows is damaged or something else caused the drive to lose its boot so then you would need a reinstall but it could be another issue causing it so I will let some one else give you more ways to fix this.

Hello! I hope that somebody from Lenovo will look at this...

Tuesday this weekend i needed to replace FAN & LCD display. Service gives me TN display instead of IPS that i had. so i looked at it and i see that on lenovo website it show me this:

"Processor: 3rd Generation Intel Core i5-3230M Processor(2.6GHz, 3MB): : Memory: 4GB PC3-12800: : Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64(GR:German): : Hard Drive: 500 GB 5400: : Wired Network: Integrated Intel 82579LM Gigabit Network Adapter: : Wireless Network: WAN Upgradeable; Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 (2x2 AGN 300Mbps): : Ports: External Microphone Headphone Line-In/out Combo Jack; 1 USB 2.0 (Constant Power); External Display (VGA); RJ-45; Docking/Port Replicator; Display port; 2 USB 3.0: : Form Factor: Notebook: : Included Warranty: 3Yr 1Yr Bat OSR"

Hi Lenovo community, I'm looking to upgrade the RAM in my X230 but I've been unable to find detailed information about the size of RAM (pins) in the laptop. I looked up the model number of the original Samsung RAM in the laptop and found it on Amazon, where it is listed as having 204 pins. Is this the correct size I should look for when purchasing new RAM for this machine? Thanks!

Hello guys I am ready to order ThinkPad x230 from Lenovo.de but the only option for the battery is 29, 29+ and 29++. Will there be a problem or can I continue with the order?

Answer:Thinkpad X230 and 29++ battery

The ThinkPad X230 uses 44, 44+ or 44++ batteries. The 29 series batteries are only made for ThinkPad X220. The 29 batteries in the X230 will not charge, as it will be seen as NON-authentic battery. http://www.thinkscopes.com/29-29-or-29-batteries-in-the-thinkpad-x230/

I am leaning towards buying a Lenovo thinkpad x230 with 6 cell main battery as well as a 44++ 9 cell battery and a 19+ six cell battery configuration (6 +9+6 cell battery configuration). My queries are1. Can all three of the batteries work in conjunction without any issues?2. Do i need to charge the batteries separately or they all get charged simultaneously while i plug a charger in the laptop?3. Is there any other battery option ( like a 9 cell main plus a 44++ 9 cell and a 19+ 6 cell, i.e. 9+9+6 cells) that can work ?

Basicall Im using the WINAIAPACKAGE.exe to write the smbios asset tag and this was succesfull and confirmed it was indeed written to the bios.  But when you do a wmi query on the device using wmic systemenclosure get smbiosassettag it returns back "No Asset Information"  This is working on all the over lenovo laptops i have come across except for this x230 any ideas what could be going on as this is a pretty standard field and is used as part of an automated build process.

Hey, Im planning to order a x230 soon, and I was wondering, if I choose not to have an expresscard reader, will there just be a hole there? I've heard people say their left palm wrest is really flimsy. Is it like that with and without an expresscard reader? Thanks

Answer:Thinkpad x230 expresscard question

Yep, there is just the slot for the card covered by a very flimsy feeling flap. That section of the palmrest flexes a lot. I haven't tried putting a filler piece in but that would probably solve the problem. Aftermarket (i.e. non-OE) expresscards should work fine and are a fraction of the cost.

Hi Sirs/Madams, Good Day. I would like to seek for your humble assistance if ever you have any idea on how to fix the whole plate of the x230 keyboard. What happend was accidentally I spilt a huge amount of coffer in my unit. i immediately placed my laptop upside down to run any liquid in the keyboard, how ever after a couple of hours, i cannot use it any more. when I tried to swithed it off, and try to switch-on; no avail. Will there be any chance that i can still recover the whole keyboard? since i tried to use other keyboard (same model) and it worked. also the power button does not function anymore.  Thanks thanks

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that you spilled coffee on your Lenovo ThinkPad X230 and afterwards, the keyboard stopped functioning.

Refer the hardware maintenance manual of X230 to understand how to perform installation and disassembly of hardware components.

Hope this helps!
Best regards,
Mithun.
