CES 2018: Five trends to watch – and new Windows 10 devices that power them

Question: CES 2018: Five trends to watch – and new Windows 10 devices that power them

It?s exciting to kick off the new year with our incredible partners at CES, the world?s gathering place for people who love consumer technology. As I walked the floor and met with our partners, it?s been amazing to see the amount of innovation in the Windows ecosystem and the trends that will unlock creativity and empower a new culture of work in 2018 and beyond.

In line with our mission to empower every person and organization to achieve more, creators, students, and gamers continue to inspire us. Over the course of this week, we showcased new devices and experiences in five key areas:

1. Beautiful devices ranging from premium to affordable to fit every lifestyle
PCs are increasingly a lifestyle statement. People want beautiful and powerful devices that fit their style. Surface Laptop is a great example. It packs performance, versatility, and over 14 hours of battery life into a sleek design. Starting at $999, Surface Laptop is available in four colors to fit your style.
Surface Laptop available in four colors
At CES this week, our partners announced incredible new devices ranging from premium to affordable. We believe affordability should not come at the cost of elegant design and access to innovation ? and no ecosystem offers more choice than Windows.

Examples of new Windows 10 PCs unveiled at CES this week include:
Acer Swift 7
Acer Swift 7

ASUS Zenbook 13

Dell XPS 15

The Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 offers an eye-catching next-generation InfinityEdge 4K Ultra HD display with vivid color and cinematic immersion in a slim 16mm design. It?s built with the new 8th Generation Intel Core processor combining a high-performance Intel CPU and discrete Radeon RX Vega M graphics in a single package. It?s also built with far-field microphone capabilities that let you talk to Cortana even when you?re across the room from the PC. The XPS 15 2-in-1 starts at $1,299.99.

HP Spectre x360 15?

The Lenovo ThinkPad L580 series include 8th Generation Intel Core processors and optional discrete AMD graphics in a thin and light form factor. The Lenovo ThinkPad L series ranges from $449 ? $779.

The Samsung Notebook 7 Spin (2018) has a 360-degree rotating touch screen, is Active-Pen enabled for Windows Ink (Pen sold separately) and offers secure fingerprint login with Windows Hello. Samsung will share pricing and availability of this device in Q1.
2. A new category of Always Connected PCs with up to 20 days of standby power
In December, along with our hardware partners HP and ASUS, we showed the world the first full-featured Always Connected PCs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset running Windows 10. These Qualcomm-powered devices deliver instantly on, always-connected experiences that seamlessly switch between LTE and WiFi connections and up to 20 days of standby power. Also in December, we started shipping Surface Pro with LTE Advanced to business customers. Surface Pro with LTE Advanced provides seamless connectivity with unmatched versatility and performance.
Surface Pro with LTE Advanced for business customers
This week at CES, Lenovo announced the Miix 630, a 2-in-1 detachable that gives you the power and productivity of a laptop with the always-on, always-connected mobility of a smartphone. It offers up to 20 hours of battery life in a thin and light fan-less design and supports Windows Hello with a built-in infrared camera.
Lenovo Miix 630
HP also announced their Always Connected PC running on Intel chips: the HP ENVY x2.
The new HP ENVY x2 is purpose-built for an always-on, always ready to work experience. The thin, light and durable device offers mobile flexibility to stay connected with an instant-on experience with optional 4G LTE and a brilliant touch display that supports Windows Ink.

3. Voice powers an increasing number of new PCs and devices
We built Windows 10 to be the most advanced platform for the most natural of input methods, including voice. From Windows Hello facial recognition to voice input with Cortana, AI is deeply incorporated into Windows 10 to make your experience more personal and more secure.

Thanks to far-field microphones arriving in more than a dozen new Windows 10 PCs, you can ask Cortana on your PC to check the score of the game, the weather, or hear the news. New devices from Dell and ASUS recently announced are great examples of what?s possible with this far-field capability and we will continue to see this number grow. We?ve seen Cortana expand to the Harmon Kardon Invoke voice-activated speaker, and we?re looking forward to more from HP, who will unveil a new device featuring Cortana, combining connectivity and voice activation in a beautiful, compact, and stylish design later this year.

Not only have we invested in deeply integrating Cortana for these advanced experiences, Windows also provides the most robust platform for our partners to offer additional voice capabilities.

This week, device makers including Acer, ASUS, HP, and Lenovo announced that Amazon Alexa will be available on some of their Windows 10 PCs in 2018 through an app. It?s great to see Amazon building an Alexa app for Windows 10 ahead of other platforms that leverage the far-field technology our hardware partners are building into their devices.

Finally, partners like Johnson Controls and Kohler have unveiled new smart home devices powered by the Windows and Azure platforms:
GLAS from Johnson Controls smart thermostat featuring Cortana
Johnson Controls announced the first in-home voice-controlled thermostat, using Cortana and powered by Windows 10 IoT and Azure IoT.
Kohler selected Azure IoT as its cloud platform to power its new line of connected products, KOHLER Konnect. KOHLER Konnect allows personalized bath and kitchen experiences that automate everyday tasks.
4. Mixed reality gains momentum
Windows Mixed Reality headsets from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung
Last year, we welcomed the launch of Windows Mixed Reality headsets from our partners Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung, and unveiled highly immersive VR experiences, highlighted by many of the most popular VR games and experiences, including more than 2,000 titles from the SteamVR library.

This week at CES, ASUS announced that their Windows Mixed Reality headset will be coming to customers in North America in the first quarter of this year.

When we unveiled Microsoft HoloLens, we knew mixed reality had the potential to change the world. Today, we?re inspired by industry leaders like Ford, thyssenkrupp, and Case Western Reserve University who are reimagining the possibilities of product design, remote assistance, and healthcare with HoloLens and mixed reality. With HoloLens now available in 39 markets and more on the way, we can?t wait to see what our partners will do in the coming year.

5. Gaming PCs that deliver more immersive and social experiences
PC gaming is booming, driven by innovation in VR, the incredible popularity of multiplayer games like PlayerUnknown?s Battlegrounds (PUBG), the excitement of esports, and game streaming services like Mixer. We continue to see PC gaming innovation from partners such as Dell, HP, NVIDIA, Lenovo, msi, iBUYPOWER, and Corsair.

This week, ASUS unveiled the ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) G703, a gaming laptop with an ultra-responsive 17.3-inch IPS-level display with NVIDIA G-SYNC technology that can reach refresh rates of 144Hz. It?s Mixed Reality Ultra Badged which means it?s powerful enough to run Windows Mixed Reality experiences when combined with a compatible headset and includes support for up to eight Xbox One controllers, eliminating the need for multiple adapters.
ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) G703
Continuing to push gaming display technology boundaries, NVIDIA just announced Big Format Gaming Displays, along with supporting hardware partners Acer, ASUS, and HP. BFGDs are high-end, 65-inch, 4K, 120Hz HDR displays ? complete with NVIDIA?s G-Sync technology and integrated NVIDIA SHIELD set-top streaming box ? that they are calling ?buttery-smooth? for gaming.

With all this innovation, it?s no surprise that gaming on Windows 10 PCs has increased 500 percent in the last year, with nearly 200 million monthly active users gaming on Windows 10 devices.

This is just the beginning
We are just scratching the surface of what?s possible?and what?s to come in the Windows device ecosystem. With the relentless pursuit of new categories and new experiences on modern devices, innovation and ecosystem collaboration doesn?t stop at CES.

For us, this is just the beginning.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

2017 was an exciting and productive year for Cortana ? from launching the Harman Kardon Invoke intelligent speaker, releasing our Skills Kit, and introducing many new features and capabilities ? we continue to grow the Cortana ecosystem to help people get things done across work and life.

To kick-off 2018, we?re making it easier than ever for OEMs and developers to build for Cortana with the Cortana Devices SDK. Just last week, Johnson Controls announced the new Cortana-enabled JCI Glas thermostat, built using the Cortana Devices SDK. We?ve also partnered with industry leaders including Allwinner, Synaptics, TONLY and Qualcomm, to develop reference designs for new Cortana experiences. Sign up today to start building with the Devices SDK and bring Cortana to your very own designs or leverage one of the many reference designs from our Cortana Device Program partners. Additionally, skills created using the Cortana Skills Kit are available on devices built leveraging the SDK, allowing users to seamlessly access their favorite Cortana skills across all devices.

With the support of both existing and new partnerships, we?re continuing to bring Cortana to even more places in the office, at home and on the go. Regardless of the device or context, our goal is to put Cortana everywhere you need assistance, whether that is on your PC, phone, Xbox, mixed reality headsets, intelligent home speakers, thermostats and even more in the future. You?ll continue to see Cortana integ... Read more

Hi, I'm a transcriptionist. I recently just bought an HP Pavilion Laptop. I use ALL USB ports. I use a microsoft keyboard and mouse, headphones, and a infinity foot pedal.  When all these things  are in use, within a minute I lose connection with my foot pedal, windows displays HIDWatch Read Error 1167. When I unplug the microsoft keyboard and mouse and reboot, my foot pedal works. However, the foot pedal works for around 1 hours and I lose connection. The infinity foot pedal is only 5 months old. How can I get ALL these things to work simultaneously?  Please HELP!!!!!

Answer:USB devices Watch Read Error 1167

Hi @kab3600 , Welcome to the HP Forums! It is a superb  place to find answers and suggestions! For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More I grasp that you recently purchased the HP Pavilion laptop.  You use a Microsoft keyboard, and  mouse , head phones and an Infinity foot pedal. After approximately one hour of use you receive" HIDWatch Read Error 1167" and your foot pedal stops responding. Have you done all your Windows updates? Have you ran the  HP Support Assistant to assist  with any HP updates? You could  also look for an updated driver for the foot pedal from the manufacturer's site. Please verify that your USB ports are not going to sleep. Go to Device Manager. Click on the Universal Bus Controllers. On each USB root hub right click and choose properties. Click on the power management and if "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is checked uncheck it.Repeat this process for any additional USB hubs. If the issue should still remain you could try using a powered USB hub.  Best of Luck!

A have a Thinkcentre a70z with windows 7 pro 32 bit that recently stopped working. It's never been in a production environment so I'm 99% sure it's not virus related. I'd rather not wipe it back to default becuase there is some modded / licensed software installed on it that I can't reinstall - I would have to schedule an outside vendor to come in and reinstall it. USB devices are recognized and receive power but after windows loads they stop functioning (they don't work in safe mode, either). USB works fine in bios, ubuntu, and any other non-windows environment. I am able to remote into the computer, in device manager the USB devices are detected but have driver issues. The process fails when attempting to update the drivers. I tried restoring to a point a couple weeks in the past, installing a new chipset package, and removing a certain windows update that some random forum post said may be the culprit but the issue persists. I would appreciate any and all help with this! Begin Irritated RantI'm hoping this community can help since the extended warranty we bought for this product hasn't done much beside waste my time. After troubleshooting the issue for a couple days I called Lenovo support who sent a tech out with a new motherboard. The tech saw what I saw (not a motherboard or hardware issue) and said all he can do is order me some recovery disks since it's probably a windows issue. He calls in for the disks, gives me a new ticket number, and leaves with th... Read more

Mozilla to Kill Off Firefox for Windows XP and Vista in June 2018

Mozilla is one of the few companies that continue to support Windows XP, with its browser currently part of Firefox 52 ESR (Extended Support Release) channel.

Today, however, Mozilla announced that both Windows XP and Windows Vista are projected to lose Firefox support in June 2018, and users are recommended to upgrade to a newer version of Windows before this deadline.

With ESR support, Firefox is only getting security updates on Windows XP and Vista, but the browser isn?t receiving any of the new features that are available for the latest versions of the browser.

Windows XP still super-popular
This helps Windows XP users browse the web securely even though their operating system is no longer getting updates ? and the same in the case of the majority of browsers, including Internet Explorer, which doesn?t receive any new updates on XP.

?We are announcing June 2018 as the final end of life date for Firefox support on Windows XP and Vista. As one of the few browsers that continues to support Windows XP and Vista, Firefox users on these platforms can expect security updates until that date. Users do not need to take additional action to receive those updates,? Mozilla said.

Windows XP still has a market share of approximately 5 percent, and statistics point to a rather slow drop despite the lack of security updates. End of support was reached in April 2014 and since then Windows XP received just... Read more

I was just sitting here thinking about how fast technology changes. A little less than 10 years ago most of you were playing Warcraft 1 on your old 486 Machines. When processors started to gain in speed, they started slowly, and then we noticed them starting to double in speed. Like 200Mhz to 400Mhz and so on. Then we moved into the Ghz and the speeds again, were slowly moving up, but sometimes 500Mhz at a time. We sit here today dreaming about the AMD Athlon 4000+ or the FX-55, and I was wondering if were going to start to see processors do that again. Like go from 4Ghz, to 8 Ghz, then all the sudden to 20Ghz. Its not just processors either, look at harddrives, back maybe 6-8 years ago 4GB's was plenty of space, and now where almost into the Terabyte drives. I dunno, I think its just cool to look at how fast technology can change, and become better.

Windows XP has been the OS of choice for a lot of us, and still is. I was reading an article where MS is closing up support shop for XP in 2014. However while I was browsing the pages of many MB for a friends 1150 build, almost all mid-high end boards have stopped supporting XP in their OS specifications. I understand that if your building a haswell system more likely than not your gonna go for W7 or even 8.1 but still its sad to see XP being excluded already on the hardware level by alot of MB manufacturers.

Feel free to chime in!

Hi all,
What I've been working on is I have written a script in VBA to pull large amounts of related data from from a database.
What I want to do now is graph all the trends on a single graph so you can visually inspect how the trends relate to one another.

The issue is there is more than 2 possible scales for the data (ie some of the trends could go between 1-10 others 2000-20000) So when I put them all on 1 plot the details in the data are lost.

What I have written as a solution is I wrote a script that creates a individual graph for each trend line and then overlays them over each other. This is an acceptable solution, however if you want to examine a value on a specific trend you have to keep sending the "top" graph to the back till you get the one you are looking for.

I'm just wondering if there is an easier solution to this problem.

Answer:scaling trends on line graphs

2 possible solutions which may (or may not) work for you;
You can have 2 scales on the same graph. If you right click on a line from the lower end of your data and then click on Format Data Series and select "Secondary Axis" this will create the 1-10 axis on the right side of your chart. You'll need to do this for each line that you want on the second axis.
Alternatively, you could scale your larger data to 1000's and then plot your chart.
If you have some sample data and chart you could upload we could possibly come up with other solutions.

The issue is my Windows 7 PC that is WIRED connected to my router is not seeing any of my UPNP Device (Media Devices). From now on I will mention my xbox 360 cause it is the one I use most often but its across the board for all my wireless media devices.

When i am trying to media share to my xbox 360 from my windows 7 they are just not seeing each other. I went through everything all services are automatic and started that need to be. No firewall, media sharing is on. Everything says its should be fine, and it used to be. Just one day I try to stream and it stopped working.

I have read that with the Win 7 being wired and other devices being wireless Win 7 pretty much sets them up on different networks.

I tried to ping my xbox's ip address from my Win 7 PC, and I keep getting time out errors. I have pinged my xbox IP Address from the router and it came back fine. The xbox can also connect to the internet. I am pretty sure my Wired Win 7 and my wireless devices are not on the same network.

Also from my pc when I ipconfig /all I just see my pc, if i goto my network on the router they are all there

How can I fix this. I just want my wireless media devices to be able to communicate with my win 7 pc.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give. I have been pulling my hair out for over a month and when I contacted Microsoft, they said sure we can help if you pay $99 first. HELL NO

Answer:Windows 7 - Wired and Wireless Networking Issue - UPNP Devices (Media Devices)

Easy way to check if there on different networks is to check the ip address each machine is getting. If its the same first parts, ie and the xbox is on then yes its separate networks. Somethings wireless routers will push the wireless onto a separate network for security purposes, look through your routers options to see if this is enabled to separate the networks.

Okay, so this started yesterday and by the looks of it for no reason. So yesterday I started to a YouTube video and my computer crashed. I thought it was odd but nothing more, because in the past, it did this before. So I turn my computer back on and continue surfing the web and I come across a different site with a video not from YouTube, I start watching and the same thing again. At first I thought maybe I needed to do some clean up so i did I fragmented and cleaned the registry, but it still happen again. So my next thought was that my computer was overheating so I checked the fan, which looked to be ok, and raised my laptop for better airflow, but still happened again. I don't think I'm because I can work on my computer for hours without any problem and this seems to still happen even if I just started up my computer. So now I think that my computer has a virus or some kind of malware, because this also happens when I try to started up Spybot -search and destroy and it will crash in the middle of an AVG anti-virus free scan.
There's also one more thing a little while ago I had my computers memory replaced becuases the old one died and maybe it's my video card's turn to?

So some info on my computer: I'm on a IBM ThinkPad, I work off of Windows XP, I have 149 GB, 40 RAM I think, and a Radeon 7500 graphics card

and I did a Hijackthis scan too

The volume, scope and material cost of cybercrime all remain on an upward trend and have reached very high levels. Some EU Member States now report that the recording of cybercrime offences may have surpassed those associated with traditional crimes.

An expansion both in the number of cybercriminal actors and opportunities to engage in highly profitable illegal activities has partly fuelled this trend, as has the development of new cybercrime tools in areas such as ATM fraud and mobile malware. However, a large part of the problem relates to poor digital security standards and practice by businesses and individuals.

A significant proportion of cybercrime activity still involves the continuous recycling of relatively old techniques, security solutions for which are available but not widely adopted.

?The relentless growth of cybercrime remains a real and significant threat to our collective security in Europe. Europol is concerned about how an expanding cybercriminal community has been able to further exploit our increasing dependence on technology and the Internet,? said Europol?s Director Rob Wainwright.

?We have also seen a marked shift in cyber-facilitated activities relating to trafficking in human beings, terrorism and other threats. In response law enforcement authorities have increased their skill-sets and their capability to work together in platforms such as the European Cybercrime Centre at Europol, but the growing misuse of legitimate anonymity and en... For example, bring your own device has caused many companies to rethink the way they secure their network/data, as company data is stored on a personal device which is more susceptible to malware as the users get to use the device for purposes otehr than work. What are some other trends that has caused companies to change their security infrastructure?

Hello Everyone.

I have been getting the occasional BSOD the past month or two which I shrugged off and presumed to be driver based. After updating on each occasion and not getting one for a few days, I just assumed the problem would go away. It's been getting more and more frequent recently and after uninstalling all Firewall and antivirus programmes and still getting crashes this morning I am at the end of my patience, so I now seek your help.

Here is the hardware details as instructed in the thread:

- I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
- The original installed OS is Windows 7 Ultimate
- Full Retail Version
- The system is about a year and a half old.
- I reinstalled Windows in January more as a clean up than because of problems.

I will post a few hardware information too, I hope this is helpful:

- ASUS M4n68T-M LE Mobo
- AMD Athlon II X3 440 Processor (3 CPUs), ~3.0GHz
- Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 Graphics Card
- 4 GB RAM
- Previously had AVG and ZoneAlarm installed, both uninstalled, still get BSOD (I am aware Antivirus, particularly AVG, is a common cause of BSOD)

I keep all my drivers up to date as much as possible out of habit.

Attached to this post is the necessary dump info as requested. Any and all hope eradicating these errors is much appreciated.

Answer:Persistant BSOD at various times, no noticeable trends.

I just received another BSOD a moment ago, this time there was no error message to indicate what the specific error was nor what file or driver failed, however I did write down the bugcheck code. It was 0x1000007E. Sorry for bumping the topic to post this information.

Rogueware Campaigns Blending In With Twitter Trends

Want a great way to find 16,000+ malicious links that redirect you to spoof pr0n sites? Dig around on Twitter for awhile and you find them. PandaLabs says that scammers are increasingly targeting the Trending Topics list on Twitter in an attempt to get you to click on fake links that install malware.

I started to investigate further and found that while there was definitely legitimate tweet traffic for the band Phish, several zombie accounts were posting hundreds of strange and highly suspicious messages. Eventually the links led me through several redirections and finally to PornTube malware websites.

I'm building a new desktop and have run in to the following problem:

When I start the computer, the IDE device will not power up if they are plugged into my motherboard. As soon as I remove the IDE cable from the device (be it hard drive, CD-ROM, CR/RW) the device will power up as normal. I've got all of the jumper settings correct, the IDE cables going in the right way (grooves prevent improper placement).

Has anyone ever run into this problem? If so, what could cause it?

Hi Guys,

I have a home built PC running based on ASUS Maximus IV motherboard running Win7 with a Corsair ATX PSU (AX750) all in an ANTEC Sonata Elite case.

On my previous Win XP system I had the USB enabled power bar switching off my screen and other devices when I powered down my PC. With my new setup, the devices connected to the 'switched' outputs of the same USB power bar do not turn off when I power down - it is as if they are connected to the 'always on' outputs.

I'm not sure of the make of the power bar (it is hidden behind my desk and I cannot easily get at it) but I would have thought it was fairly generic.

Does anyone know whether there is a setting in the POST for the motherboard or a physical setting on the PSU that would enable the power bar USB signal?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Either I made this all up in my mind and am imagining things or I did hear from some where that Win 7 is able to power down and shut off USB devices (for example my 1tb external) automatically when not in use for a certain period of time. Just wondering if this is true and if there is already a feature like this that Im missing out on or like I said I just made it up in my head

Answer:Can Win7 power down USB devices not in use?

My 1TB external drive will put itself into stand-by mode, after 5-10 minutes of inactivity. It's not done by Windows 7 though. I'm not sure if 7 will do it for you or not.

If I look in device manager they are listed there and if I go to print the printer shows up and I can print. The screenshot below shows what I see when I open "Devices and Printers" in control panel. The biggest issue is not being able to add devices like Bluetooth speaker. Anyone have an idea how Tom resolve??

My preemptive apologies as this is not really a pure Networking issue, but often has a lot to do with Servers and the administration of a network so I thought this would be an appropriate place to post:

Regarding, remote power cycle devices using an IP connection:

These are often mentioned as being used to power cycle, among other devices, cable or DSL Modems. I don't understand how the IP connection to remotely communicate with the Power Cycle unit can exist if the Modem is ITSELF a problem ("locked up" or otherwise). What is the methodology to resolve a problem when the MODEM itself is not functioning?

Thnaks for the informed responses.

Good morning,
I've been away for a while (sorry guys, work and such), but I'm back now with a few questions/discussions. Don't worry, they're going in separate threads.
First, I'm curious what you guys normally do to increase performance from a low powered device, like my HP Stream 7 (thanks Windows Central). I turn transparency effects off and keep background apps to a minimum. What other tricks are there? Maybe we can start a nice discussion and help some people out. Including me.

Answer:Improving Performance on Low Power Devices

Hi Zach,
I used to have a HP G61 with only 1.9ghz intel celeron. I usually had freezing issues and slow performance until I started understanding how computer resources work and how to identify culprit processes. When I saw your question, I remembered some of the fixes I used to do and due to its length, I have written a post on how to make your laptop run faster. I hope one of those work for you.

uninstall driver and restart

This is so odd. I'm running Windows XP SP2 on Dual core INtel with 1 gb memory.

I've installed a front USB panel that has 4 ports in front and 2 more on the PCI card which it's attached to. (added on peripheral).

I can deal with the "this device can run faster if plugged into a 2.0 device" but what is really frustrating is that if I plug in 2 or more USB devices. At least one of them won't work.

This computer is in my family room and wirelessy networked to my other computer in another room. I use a Motorola USB device to connect for the purpose of printing stuff off the printer in the other room.

If I have too many USB devices plugged in - there doesn't seem to be enough power to allow the wireless connection - resulting in not being able to print.

This isn't the only issue. I have some software that requires the USB "key" in order to work. If I need to use that software using the "key" and then I need to print something from that particular software to the remote printer - I have to save it to my desktop firsti - then disconnect the "key" and then I can print.

Do I need a bigger PS? I have a 500W now. I thought that would be big enough. Perhaps the USB issue isn't related to that at all? Is there some way to regulate how much power is assigned to USB devices?

Since my computer is in a desk against a wall - it's very difficult to plug and unplug stuff into the rear slots. Hence the install... Read more

I'm going to assume this is a hardware problem. I'll start from the beginning. I plugged in my cell phone via a USB cord to transfer some stuff to it, and everything on my computer froze. My keyboards backlight turned off and my mouse wouldn't respond. Nothing was doing anything.

I shut down my computer using the power button on the front. It started booting up, I could hear the fans and the hard drive, but nothing turned on. The keyboard stayed unlit and the monitor didn't even come on. It's like nothing is getting any power. I'm starting to freak out a little bit....

I'm running Windows XP Home dual booted with Ubuntu Hardy, Dell Dimension 3000, 2.8Ghz P4 processor, 2GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9250.

Any idea what's going on? Any help is much appreciated.

I am looking for help from anyone with intimate knowledge of the group policies.
I have switched off all the power management settings which allow the O/S to switch off a device to save power. I am still getting disconnects and some times this affects the mouse and keyboard such that my only resolution is to switch the whole machine off and reboot, sometimes losing current information.

I have two identical machines one running Win 10 and one Win 7.
Comparing the power management in both shows that Win 10 allows more devices to be switched off than Win 7. I am now very fearful of switching both my machines to Win 10 in case this problem causes me to lose important information.

Is there a group policy? that affects all devices.

I can understand MS including this for tablets, mobiles and laptops but it should not happen in PCs.

Hello! I have a desktop computer and several days ago my old 500W power supply burnt out (from overheating I suppose) while the computer was on. I replaced it with a new one, 750W, but when I turned it on everything was working properly except for the fact that no USB devices were recognized. I have 2 USB 2.0 front ports and four rear ones. Power reaches all of them, since LEDs on devices connected light up, but OS does not indicate any devices being connected. I tried switching off the PC from the mains, pressing and holding the power button, even removed the battery on the motherboard and reset the BIOS settings. Nothing changed. I have a dual-boot PC with Windows 7 and Gentoo Linux. Neither of the two operating systems give any errors concerning the USB ports and neither recognizes anything plugged in. My PC is:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.33 GHz
HDD: Samsung HD403LJ ATA 400 GB
I don't have a USB keyboard nor a mouse to try and see if they work during BIOS boot. Does anyone have any suggestions?

is it very highly recommended to do a registry change - USB Port Remains Active for Disabled or Safely Removed USB Device to power down usb devices like external hard drives after clicking safely remove on windows 7?

Any problems with external hard drives while on that amended registry?

i started using windows 7 recently and the first internal hard drive which i used for external storage on the netbook - windows 7 became unusable after 4 times' usage. Later, I found out about external hard drives still spinning after safely remove or shutting down the computer , on windows 7.

i want to protect my other external hard drives so, hence my question above.

No one around me did the registry change as they said that as long as safely remove feature is used, it is enough already despite that the hard drive is still spinning.

i hope that i can find at least one person here who is very serious in caring about his/her external hard drives, to give me his/her input.

I notice windows 7's usb issue started back in late 2009. I wonder why Microsoft never include its remedy - USB Port Remains Active for Disabled or Safely Removed USB Device in the updates. Is there any bad effect when using the remedy?

Thank you very much!

Answer:Do a registry change to power down usb devices after safely remove?

As an electrical engineer of some 40 yrs. experience I assure you that wether you 'power it down' or not, makes no difference whatever. Nothing is using current, no possible harm to anything anywhere.

I really could'nt recommend fiddling with the registry for no benefit.

I've just restored my laptop in an effort to fix a problem I had with my mouse, a razer Naga epic, losing power. It was a last resort and I had already attempted updating firmware, and drivers, and I've come to the conclusion that the problem is not with the devices, but the usb ports themselves. I just started using a usb logitech headset and it, and the mouse lost power, at the same time. I know for a fact the problem is with the port and not devices but I haven't the slightest idea how to fix it. Any help TSG?

Answer:Random power? usage ability loss to usb devices

Additional note. When the mouse stops working, the mouse seems to be receiving power, and the laptop recognizes that the mouse is connected but the mouse doesn't move the pointer. The lights flashing is how I know it's receiving power.

I have a Satellite L305D-S5928 running Vista 32-bit.
For over a year now I've had problems with my USB ports. All 3 of them.
The ports deliver power to devices, but no devices are recognized by my computer, nor are the device's drivers able to install.
All devices WORK on other computers.
I'd list the solutions I've tried, but it would literally take me ages to remember/write them all down. Mainly because, I've tried every possible solution I've found, and I'm not exaggerating.
At this point, my only hope is that someone on here can help me.

I know this is a vague start, but I would really like to use a mouse, use Auto-Play for my iPhone, or even use a USB flash drive.

A couple extra things;
-I have been in to regedit, and device manager none of the solutions I found regarding changes/deleting/enabling/etc. worked.
-Tried finding new drivers, wasn't successful. (But also had trouble finding necessary drivers, Toshiba site isn't super helpful.)
-I haven't taken my laptop apart, but I don't feel like the USB ports are damaged.

Fingers crossed that someone here has a new idea, or a solution. Thank you to all who try to help.

Answer:HELPPPP!!! Please. USB ports provide power, but do not recognize devices.

Hi, all.
I'm an owner of Satellite L20 notebook. I have always turned power of my computer off when i need to connect or disconnect any USB Device. Some devices have a special icon on the taskbar to disconnect them but some doesn't (USB FDD or flash disks). Can I disconnect and connect devices like USB Mouse or Scanner wihtout turning power off?

Answer:Satellite L20: Can I disconnect devices like USB Mouse without turning power off?

Hi,you should be able to connect and disconnect any USB device to your L20 without turning the power of. You will hear a sound from the speakers (if you have the sound turned on) when you connect/disconnect a device to the computer, win xp will do the rest of the job. There is no reason to turn of the power first, while connecting USB devices.

ok well the title pretty much sums my problem up...ive installed the drivers that came with my Gigabyte 8S648FX-775 motherboard.all devices in the device manager appear 'working properly',which i've uninstalled and re-installed at least 5 times now. Ive downloaded all available updates from tried everything i can think of. Power is being supplied to my 4 port hub and all devices attatched to this(being a webcam and my 256Mb USB flash drive) as the light on the cam is lit. i have installed drivers for both of these devices but if i try to run the program associated wit the cam...apparently its not attatched. and the flashdrive may as well not be plugged in.for the record i also get nothing when i connect these devices to ports directly on the motherboard.
so theres my problem.ANY help or suggestions would be useful as...well to be honest im drawing a blank.

My HP Slimline s7220n, although not a powerful performer, has worked flawlessly since new. The recent addition of an HP Deskjet D2660 printer has caused performance problems for other USB devices such as flash drives, iPod, and external USB portable hard drives. The problems occur only when the printer power is "on". Other HP printers used in the past have not been problematic for the above mentioned USB devices. When I plug in an external drive to any of my 4 remaining USB 2 ports with the printer powered up, it displays any number of symptoms on screen from not being recognized to not being able to install itself. It also causes the computer to hang indefinitely. There is also an occasional warning window from the task bar starting with "Windows - Delayed Write Failed".  Moments after turning off the printer, the device is recognized and opens the drive per my settings. The PC returns to normal. I have performed many troubleshooting steps including uninstalling and re-installing the USB drivers, opened the case and physically re-seated connectors and the memory board, blew the dust out of the USB sockets, re-installed the printer driver, checked for correct BIOS settings and correct BIOS version, examined device properties for conflicts, experimented with virtual memory, and finally re-installed Windows XP Home Edition from the recovery console and completed all Windows updates. None of these steps has resolved the issue. PC-Doctor di... Read more

Answer:USB 2 Devices rendered useless when HP D2660 printer power is on

One suggestion i have that appears not yet to have been tried is: using a POWERED usb hub connected to one of your rear ports connect your printer usb to that powered hub. If you can try to borrow one to see if it helps before buying one. Buying one if it doesn't solve the problem will only add to your frustration. good luck, truenorth

Hey there! I actually have an open ticket with two companies, whom of which are having an issue figuring this out.

Basically, if I use a USB or DVD/CD and load up recovery media software (regardless of whether I actually perform a recovery) OR even just loading Windows installation media, once I exit out of the booted media and go into Windows.... at the password screen.... ALL of my USB devices lose power. Both the keyboard and mouse lights turn off and nothing works until I press the tower's reset button. To put it in simpler terms, in my opinion, it seems that some kind of mechanism activates, rendering any and all USB devices useless once windows begins, subsequent to the computer having been previously booted from recovery media (or any other bootable disc or usb drive).

I opened this separate thread because although both problems are somewhat similar, and concern the UEFI bios (I think), they are still different in many ways.

I am not sure if this justifies a return of the product to the manufacturer I purchased it from? Or if they're just going to be pointing fingers. I have used recovery media on other PCs and I have NEVER encountered this issue. But of course, I understand this UEFI Bios is a new technology, but this is ridiculous...

Answer:All USB devices lose power when loading recovery media

Not very proficient with UEFI but if it is enabled you can try disabling Fast Boot.

When I go into   Device Manager   and right click on the USB keyboard and mouse, there is no tab for  Power Management.  (The tabs available are: General, Driver, Details). I'd like to add/show the  Power Management tab, so I can choose "Allow this device to wake up computer" as described here This knowledge base mentions using USB mouse or the lenovo USB keyboard to wake up computer. Both are not functioning since my T500 doesn't show the  Power Management tab in Device Manager  In the BIOS on this laptop, there wasn't any option for wake on USB.Laptop has most recent BIOA (updated today), and all current lenovo updates.

Answer:T500 (XP) - show/enable "Power Management" for USB devices in "Device Manager" -wake on USB

It should wake up on mouse movement or keyboard movement by default. Also, the Power Management tab appears under the USB Root Hub device.

I've been having issues lately with the Dell D3100.
These issues are all related to docking with the computer on, or from sleep, or with the D3100 powering on after the computer is on.
To resolve all these issues, I need to do a full power-off on the laptop and then power-on, which is obviously annoying and disruptive.

For example:
Have laptop power on fresh with dock attached - all works fine. Put laptop to sleep, unplug USB dock. Use laptop undocked. Then re-plug in the dock (either with laptop in sleep mode again, or not).
The dock usually outputs the displays correctly (though sometimes doesn't). But it ALWAYS does not re-attach the mouse & keyboard that are plugged into its USB ports. So then my USB mouse/keyboard do not work until I do a hard power-off of the laptop - defeating the purpose of live docking.
Also, I've noticed that trying to restart the laptop via software when it gets into this state will cause it to hang on the restart. It will keep saying "Restarting..." until you hard power off.
This is for Windows 10 Home. Maybe some Windows updates over the last couple months have started causing issues?

I expect this dock to work with all the docking scenarios. I should be able to unplug the USB and re-plug it in with audio, video, and USB all working. I should be able to put my laptop to sleep, take it with me and come back and plug the USB dock in and have everything come up working again.
This recent behavior and issues is making the ... Read more

I'm looking for the best antivirus/antispyware program. I'm using windows defender right now, but I want to try something better. So far i have tried:

1. Superantispyware
Seems to mostly find tracking cookies which can be deleted using your browser.

2. Avast
Didn't find anything, took a suspiciously long time to install, and went nuts when i tried to uninstall it again. Blacklisted.

3. Malwarebytes
Didn't find anything besides slimdrivers, which is neither spyware or a virus, but a program i use to update my computer with. Lags really bad if you try to adjust the window size or scroll through the results.

4. Adwcleaner
Works well, however you actually can't install it, you have to download it and then run the program everytime you want to scan your computer.

5. Adaware
Took a suspiciously long time to install, didn't help with anything and was annoying to uninstall.

6. AVG
Insanely slow to install and hangs several times during the installation. It most likely installs a lot of files that aren't necesarry. People are reporting issues with uninstalling it. Blacklisted.

7. Comodo
Asks if you want to install a lot of junk files, e.g. yahoo toolbars, comodo shopping, etc. If you say no it will install it regardless. Blacklisted.
