P50 Hard crashes on boot or wake up

Question: P50 Hard crashes on boot or wake up

I have this big problem since I have received my P50 (at least for one year now). It is a 7600HQ machine with a Quadro 1000M video card. Let's say I start my day by turning on the laptop. The laptop boots. I see the Windows login screen. If I wait a little the P50 crashed very hard. The screen shows the artifact in the screenshot I have attached but sometimes I see an even color (like yellow) instead of the artifacts. The whole system is frozen. The lights on the keyboard do not react (num lock for example). So I hard reset the laptop using the power button and this repeats for around 10 times before it is booted correctly. And after this: the P50 is rock solid. It stays on for days at a time. Multiple VM's running, 32GB memory, M.2 SSD. Fully functional. So I thought it was Windows and installed Linux. This showed the exact same behavior. Some things to consider: 1. Only happens when I turn on the computer after some down time2. Once up it is rock solid3. Seems to happen more when I connect an external monitor (immediatly after connecting the cable). Both DP or HDMI show the symptoms. But I have seen it happen while using the P50 on my lap.4. All updates installed via the System Update app of Lenovo. Inclusing all BIOS updates5. Tried the hybrid or dedicated options in the bios for the video card. No change.6. It does not happen all mornings. Sometimes it boots up fine on the first try.7. Never happens in the BIOS or boot up screen. Only when the OS is fully booted8. Happens on battery and when the power adapter is connected It has all the symptoms of a bad video card but for the life of me I'm not able to explain why the machine is rock solid after these problems. Might be a thermals problem (when I start the machine). But the ambient temperature is normal. I'm also researching some electric problems. When I use my earphones (pluged in to the P50) I can feel some electricity in my ear but the problem happens also when on battery.

Preferred Solution: P50 Hard crashes on boot or wake up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm new to sevenforums and would appreciate the help of some of you. I have updated my user profile with all of the details and specs of my system that is having my issue.

Recently, my computer will not wake up from sleep mode. Once it enters sleep mode, the only way to get it functioning again is to hold the power button, completely shut it off, and then boot my system back up.

It appears as if everything starts back up once I open the lid or press the power button to wake it up, but the screen never turns back on. The fan starts up, the backlit keyboard lights up, the leds all blink, but nothing I try will turn the screen back on forcing me to press and hold the power button for a complete shut down.

I have reinstalled the latest Intel HD Graphics driver as well as the latest NVIDIA graphics driver (both the stable and beta release).

I do not get a blue screen or any sort of error. Upon the restart, I am not prompted with any error from windows or any signs of the forced shut down. I have been messing with this issue for a few days now and am asking for some help from the community here at sevenforums. If you need any additional info let me know.

Thanks.

I have been getting few BSOD screens lately, usually while watching a YouTube video and sometimes the system crashes as soon as it boots. However, I have been very busy lately so I kept postponing the the search to find the error.

Today, something unusual happened, after yesterday's update (KB3156421), I booted my system but the monitor remained blank, I could here clicking noises around the area of DVD drive (couldn't tell if it was from the hard drive or not) and the system didn't boot up. I had to do a hard boot and restart my PC, which gave me this error:

I selected the second option and then the system had booted successfully, soon I restarted my computer to clock the RAM back to 1866Mhz and it still loaded fine. However, whenever I did a hard boot when I was troubleshooting this error, the clocking noise came back and I had to manually restart the system to be confronted with the same message.

Notes:
I have ran both MemTest and the chkdsk command before (around 4 months ago) and there were no problems.
Have also ran a Kaspersky virus scan and no malware was detected.

I have uploaded the DM log collector file but it does not contain a crash report for today's BSOD.

Answer:PC crashes after hard boot

New BSOD appeared when logging in after PC was put to sleep immediately after it restarted. The BSOD pointed at a system file called "igdkmd64.sys", which I believe is to do with Intel HD Graphics. Therefore, I went to the device manager and tried to update that driver but it said it was up-to-date.I have attached the DM Log Collector file (this one does contain the crash report for this BSOD)Thank you for taking the time to help me.

I bought this laptop 2 weeks ago, it is a HP Pavillion Notebook. For about a week now, maybe even since when I got it, the laptop sometimes fails to wake up from sleep. i have an alienware m15x laptop with win7 and a couple of times a week when i wake my computer up it goes to a blue screen and crashes. after it boots up again, it says intel boot agent ge pxe-e61, pxe-mof check cable. i googled it and people said that sometimes it tries to boot from a network, so i disabled all boot options in bios except the hard disk, but im still having the error. the drive is a 64gb ssd, and it's only a few months old, so it shouldn't be that right? also, i took out the drive and cleaned it with a q-tip as best i could, even though i make a habbit of not touching the terminals of connectors and i couldn't find any dirt on it, but that didn't work either.

Answer:laptop sometimes crashes on wake

ok, this happened again so i took careful notice of what was happening and here's some specifics:
it showed the windows logon screen with some elements missing (like the cammera's display for aliensence) then an element or 2 went away. after about 4 seconds it showed a blue screen for about a second. i couldn't read it all, but i did make out it saying something like collecting data for a crash dump. then it rebooted and displayed the following text:
intel(r) boot agent ge v1.3.35
copyright (c) 1997-2009 intel corporation
pxe-e61: media test failure, check cable
pxe-mof: exiting intel boot agent
operating system not found

after that i power down and reboot, and aside from lost data, i can logon fine (until it happens again)

Hi All, After installing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update my PC crashes on wake from sleep. It happens about 50% of the time on wakeup from sleep. Here are the symptoms: On wake from sleep my mouse cursor is only visable on my secondary monitor and the screen is blackThe windows working icon spins on blank/black secondary monitor a few times and then the computer automatically restartsI have found a workaround by putting the computer back to sleep before the crash/restart and then waking it up againI have updated my Video Card driver (which happens automatically in Windows 10 anyway)I have emailed AMD tech support and they said it was a known issue but they are no longer updating drivers for my systemDo you have any suggestions on how to fix this issue? I have seen multiple posts for different systems on the Microsoft Tech Support website here are some of them: Windows 10 Anniversary Update freezes at lock screen when waking from sleep http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-update/windows-10-anniversary-update-fre...  Windows 10 may freeze after installing the Anniversary Update - Updated 8-31-16 http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-performance/windows-10-may-freeze-after-... These solutions do not work. Thanks for your help!

Hi,

I got a Satellite U300 few days ago, and I am experiencing troubles when the laptop goes into sleeping mode.
The thing is that when it goes to sleep, the screen switches off, but the power indicator remains on (blue), instead of blinking with an orange color.

Then it is not possible to wake up the laptop, and the only solution is to reboot the computer.

I've been trying the different possibilities to get into the sleeping mode, and I get the problem mainly when the computer is in the Vista high-performance mode, and when pressing the switch-off key in the fast menu.

I know Vista gives quite some many problems, but I haven't seen anybody here experiencing the same problem.
Should I send the laptop back to technical support?

Thanks in advance,

Answer:Satellite U300 crashes and cannot wake up from sleeping mode

I have had opportunity to work a little bit with several Toshiba notebooks and one of them was Satellite U300. After short check of notebook basic functions I can say for sure that switch between running mode and standby/hibernate work well and I didn?t notice any problem there.

I really cannot understand what is wrong there but please do this:
- If you want to switch into standby choose option using START button.
- Wait a little bit and I hope after few seconds the notebook will change into standby mode (blinking orange LED)
- Close the lid
- Wait a moment open the lid and press power button
I really hope your notebook will start properly and you will be able to use OS again.

Bye

If you are experiencing the S10 with Vista crashing upon resume/wake up from LONG TERM sleep/suspend/hibernation there is some help from Microsoft here: Microsoft KB Microsoft KB1 The second article is more detailed in identifying the correct registry key. This problem with the S10 seems related to the usbvideo.sys driver used by the built-in Lenovo webcam so you have to find the registry key in your S10 associated with the webcam. According to the articles it is a problem with Vista and it exists in other laptops/desktops and other usb devices. These articles may also help if you are experiencing this issue with WIN7.

I have just bought a new Samsung S24D590L monitor for my Windows 7 desktop. It is connected to the PC with a DVI out of PC and HDMI in to the monitor. I loaded the drivers from the installation CD. All is well except if I leave the room and the PC display goes off after the allotted time, it does not return as I "swish" the mouse, as the old NEC monitor did. I have to switch the monitor off and on , then the picture returns. Is there a way of restoring the "old" way of waking the monitor up ?

Answer:New monitor hard to wake up.

According to the Samsung Manual S24D590L has an internal Off function which and I quote
*For products for the market in Europe, the Off Timer is set to automatically activate 4 hours after the product powers on. This is done in accordance with power supply regulations. If you do not want the timer to activate, go to
MENU > SETUP&RESET and set Off Timer to Off.*
You haven't said how long it was on or how long it was left but it looks as if the monitor is currently powering off and will not respond until turned on again. Check the settings and turn off the OFF timer.

I have a Western Digital 7gig hard drive installed as the second drive. Frequently it will not be found when the computer boots. About the other half of the time, all works normally.

The problem first becomes apparent when the BIOS looks for the drives. It will hesitate for a LONG time, then find the first drive, and not find the second drive. If this happens, the drive activity light will stay steadily lit for as long as the computer is turned on - no blinking, always on.

Can anyone advise me, or give me a good guess, whether the problem is likely the drive, power to the drive, or the IDE controller?

Thanks!

Hey chaps, I've run into an issue with the Desktop Windows Manager - in short it very occasionally crashes out when I wake from sleep, which stops the monitor going on, and forces me into a hard reset via the login screen (two users - can't navigate in the dark).

I did notice what sounded like a usb plug in windows notification sound (three beep tone) if that helps.

But the error in app manager says it was DWM exiting in 'association with' my 1080Ti.

This happens once in a blue moon. Once a month at most. But it's still annoying.

I've heard such errors are a known Windows 10 bug - never had anything like this on 7.

Any known cure for this ail?

Any further info required, feel free to ask.

If you put your machine to sleep, then all programs are suspended, so there is absolutely no point in leaving them "running". Most especially not if this causes errors on waking.

If this is in the wrong forum, please move to the correct forum.

I am running windows 7 64 bit, and have 4 external hard drives attached (not the best way, but until I can afford a server, the only way).
I am using my computer as a media center only.
When I wake my computer it can take a while (30 seconds to a minute), before I can use it, due to it starting up my external hard drives, but I have noticed a couple of times, my computer will wake without starting up my external hard drives (able to use media center within 2 seconds).
Does anyone know if there is a way to get my computer to wake up without starting up the external hard drives every time?

Answer:Wake computer without waking external hard drives

Switch them OFF.

I currently have 4 external hard drives connected to my computer. I have each of them set to sleep after an hour of inactivity. However, if I am using the computer, they stay asleep, until I delete something; anything. Any time I send something to the recycle bin, all four of my external hard drives wake up.

I would like for this not to happen. I already went to the Recycle Bin Properties and set each external hard drive to "Don't move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" thinking that it would quit checking them for deleted files.

I would much appreciate any help on how to prevent these external hard drives from turning on when I delete files off of my computer. And just to be clear, I am NOT deleting files that are on the externals, they are files that are on the Computer.

I use these forums a lot when I have a question, but I have never had the need to post before, so this is my first post. If this is in the incorrect sub-forum, I apologize.

Answer:External Hard Drives Wake Up When I Empty Recycle Bin

I have EXACTLY the same issue, it's unfortunate no one replied to this

I also set all my drives to "Don't move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" and everytime I delete a file anywhere ALL external my drives wake up

Is there really no way around this? Is no one else having this issue? Does no one else have an external drive attached to his PC that he wants to sleep while idle? Why is Windows checking ALL the RECYCLE.BIN folders on ALL drives when I delete a file on ONE drive?

It would be really great if someone knew something about this, preferrably some way around this, so the drives can stay asleep when I do not intend to access them but just delete a file on a different drive.

I have a External Seagate 2 Tb hard drive that after a while, will disconnect and I can't wake it by trying to access the drive in Explorer. I tried rebooting my computer but it doesn't show up anymore. The only solution it seems is to disconnect the drive and plug it back in.

Any advices?

I am on Windows 10

I have 4 Internal HDDs installed, 3 are SATA and 1 IDE, Whenever I wake my PC from a hybrid sleep the IDE drive no longer responds (slave drive) It causes explorer to freeze for awhile as it tries to access and the HD light stays lit until I reboot the PC.

Also Im unable to shutdown properly or reboot when this happens, I have to do a hard reset or hold the power button. (attempting to do a normal restart / shutdown always gets stuck at "logging off").

I never use to have this problem before, it seems to of started after I enabled Intel AHCI in my bios recently, but I didnt think this would effect an IDE drive? The drive works fine before the PC goes to sleep and no SMART errors are reported in HD Tune etc.

Any ideas appreciated.

Answer:One of my hard drives wont wake from Hybrid sleep.

If you used the intel controller to set it to AHCI mode - did you install this driver from the gigaybyte site it will update the AHCI driver and should provide correct functionality- Intel SATA RAID Driver - 10.5.0.1015 - GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1366 - GA-EX58-UD3R (rev. 1.6) i think its the latest version or equivalent version of the Intel Rapid Storage driver which is needed even when you dont have raid enabled. Note Im not 100% sure here as i have no gigabyte board and i cant unpack the driver to check it.

You could also update to the latest driver for your video card - long shot fix.

Otherwise Switch back to ide mode - AHCI is only usefull for hot swapping hard drives - if you have no need there is no speed difference as most modern hard drives have this enabled automatically. W7 should find the original driver upon rebooting if you just reset from AHCI to IDE mode in the bios.

If you used the microsoft fix, to be sure of success, follow this path in the registry : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci - then right click start - modify and change from 0 to 3 - then go to bios and reset back to IDE mode and reboot.

[Seriously need help] External hard disk causes hard drive failures & OS crashes
The thread is rather long. Only read what you think important. Skip the rest!

We have a serious but mysterious problem. We have spent already one week but drawing a blank.
Two hard drives have been crashed and failed (unreadable). One computer has hung a few times unexpectedly and had one weird restart (no memory dump produced).
I suspect all the recent problems have to do with the new USB external hard disk (Buffalo MiniStation Lite: HD-PE250U2).

**********
Formatting USB external hard disk

Originally I would like to use the program given by Buffalo to format the external drive once but we failed. We simply used Windows to reformat the drive into NTFS. I did not use the TurboSpeed advertised by Buffalo, or run its free program.

The first time we met the problem.
We were trying to help a friend to backup data on an old drive, about a few years old. We plugged in the Buffalo USB portable hard drive and transferred a whole lot of files to the drive. Several cop/cut-and-paste operations were active at that time. The whole system completely froze up. It doesn't respond at all. Only a hard restart could help.
Restarted. Tranferred again. Several cop/cut-and-paste operations were active.

One of the computers here at work has a hard time waking up. It usually gives trouble even coming back from sleep mode when in Windows. You can move the mouse around for a good 2-3 minutes before it wakes up and the screen goes back to the desktop.

Also, I dont think this is related, but when the computer powers on or reboots, it sometimes takes a good 5-10 tries before you can see anything on the screen. You can hear it booting up by the normal computer beeps, but theres nothing on the screen. Ive already replaced the video card and cables. Also I checked the monitor. Its not any of those.

Its an older Gateway 1.2 Ghtz computer with about a gig of ram.

I dont think the two problems are related, but I may be wrong. Anyone? Thanks

I have just purchased an HP Pavilion desktop from Currys to replace my old desktop running Windows Vista.  Although faster than my old desktop to boot up, it performs miserably when compared to my HP Envy notebook.  When left for a while it takes 90 seconds to wake up when my HP Envy and the old Vista desktop are instant. Comparing with the HP Envy, both are running the same version of Windows 10 and have the same memory.  The only difference is the processor.  The Envy has  an Intel 2.60 GHz and the Pavilion has an AMD 3.6 GHz.  Both have had McAfee disabled and the only different software running is my email client, Windows Live Mail on the Envy and Mozilla Thunderbird on the Pavilion. On initial power up the Envy shows the welcome screen in 3 seconds, the Pavilion takes 90 seconds.  Wake up from sleep mode is instant on the Envy but 90 seconds on the Pavilion (but only 4 seconds if it has 'just' gone to sleep). I expected similar performance so I am dissappointed with the Pavilion.  Does anyone else experience this slow response?  Are there any settings I can adjust?  Could it be Mozilla Thunderbird? Any comments or ideas will be most welcome,Thanks.

Hey !

I had a very very disturbing experience in which I was forced to shut down the computer, but failed and accidentally sent it to sleep.
Unfortunately, it never managed to wake up. It stayed during half an hour blocked early in the restarting process... I took my chance with a hard-reset.

And then it becomes insane. It gives me the cold shoulder, just hanging in a "Reverting changes" task. It's been a good while too.

I stand in awe wondering how is it even possible to break my setup like this. Considering the damn thing came with no restoring CD of any kind, on a scale of it's all fine to you're screwed, how exactly would you rate me ?

Thanks for helping !

Answer:Interrupted during wake up, can't boot anymore

It might have a recovery partition where you could revert it to factory settings.

If you can get into the bios enable the boot menu which should activate F-12 to show the boot menu on startup.
If so choose 10 & get into recovery options.

Ever since I've installed a second hard drive in my T410, a Hitachi 250GB drive, my machine fails to wake from sleep (sometimes)... Then I have to do a hard reset. I had the same problem without the 2nd drive when I tried to use the HD Password in the BIOS and found out that it was something to do with the Crucial M4 drive I'm using. But this same problem is now happening ever since using the 2nd drive slot. Any ideas? I really like the extra storage space and don't want to remove it based on this problem.

Hi guys, (first post here )... I was highly impressed with some of the deeply technical answers on this site, so I'm hoping someone can help me narrow down to the cause of this issue I have, and possibly help me learn something about system software and firmware

So some time ago I acquired this MSI P45 platinum third-hand, and it has been living up to its name. However, it does not sleep and wake up properly.

To be specific, it looks like it sleeps properly, but doesn't wake up properly. The lights and fans start up, but one of 2 things happen

1) the POWER LED doesn't light up, only the HDD LED (strange)
2) the POWER LED lights up, the HDD LED doesn't work

Either way, no display. or any activity I can cause through the keyboard. I'm on BIOS 1.7b14(official Beta BIOS) (A7512IMS.17E). It didn't work with 1.6(official release) either. It doesn't seem to be any known bug.

I've tried a bunch of things, but I would like to try steps systematically once again, in case I've missed some combination. So, what could be the issue, and what can I check?

Answer:MSI P45 Platinum doesn't wake after sleeping, hard reboot required

Hi! Been pulling my hair out for a week with this. I am an advanced user who is totally stumped. This is a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional x64 with all drivers installed from lenovo.com x230 3435-22U having issues where if it goes to sleep. When the machine wakes up, SOMETIMES it allows me to move the mouse with no issues and continue to use the PC.  SOMETIMES, I have to use the touchscreen to move the mouse and then can continue using the trackpad. and SOMETIMES, it is totally frozen at the log-in screen and then powers down suddenly. Hardware diagnostics all check out just fine. I have also switched SATA in BIOS to 'compatibility' and upgraded the BIOS as recommended. I have also disabled AMT inside the BIOS. I'm really stumped here. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I have a Dell Dimension E310 running Windows 7. I upgraded to Win7 about 5 months ago and then added a video card about 2 months ago. About the time I added the video card (NVIDIA GForce 8400 GS), my Dell stopped coming out of sleep mode. I have to hard power down and then I can restart. Only recently I've noticed that even when I shut down and let the machine sit for a few hours, it behaves the same when I push the power button as it does when I try to bring it out of sleep. Here is what happens in both cases (trying to come out of sleep or trying to start after shut down):

Power comes on to the computer (the fan starts, the lights on the box come on), however I don't hear the disk drive spin and the monitor doesn't wake up. If I hard power down and then re-power on, everything works just fine.

I have NOT upgraded my power supply and I guess the video card may be drawing more power. Could this be it? Could there be a capacitor that needs to have some charge to get things started and that is why it works on the second start, but not the first start? Or is this a bad hypothesis? Any suggestions out there?

Thanks.

Answer:Dell won't wake from sleep - takes 2x to boot

I've now installed a higher wattage power supply (430 W to replace the old 230 W) which should be more than enough. Unfortunately, symptoms are the same: If the machine is off for a few hours, it requires two tries to startup. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Hello All, Just received my lenovo ideapad y460p and whenever I shut down the computer, or put the computer in sleep / hibernation mode the only way I can restart it is by removing the battery, unplugging the power cord, inserting the battery and plugging it back in. At first I thought it was a bug with the hibernation function so I disabled it via the command prompt. However the issue continues. I consulted Lenovo support via their instant message chat function but they were unable to diagnose the issue and directed me to the warranty support phone number, suggesting "one key recovery." I assume that means a system restore and hope there is a better solution than resetting the laptop to factory defaults as a first step. Please let me know if there are any suggestions or if anyone else is experiencing this issue. Thanks!Mark

Answer:y460p - Critical Boot / Wake Up Issue

One Key Recovery is not system restore.. its reinstalling windows :/ which is not cool if u have loaded some softwares.. well u said its a new laptop.. so do one key and see if it kills the issue.. if not call them again..

Hi all

I recently clean re-installed Win7 Pro 64 and now the Power Options keep reverting to High Performance every time I re-boot and even on wake up. If I set it to a power plan every time it works fine that one time.

I didn't make any changes to hardware/bios from previous install. The only change is that I first installed XP x86 to a separate redundant HD to enable a legacy scanner for which no 64bit drivers are available and I only boot into XP on an occasional as and when basis. I didn't make any changes to Windows boot manager & can only boot into it from F8.

I also downloaded a legacy game from Steam which is running happily on Win7. I rapidly decided that I hate Steam so I set it not to run at startup, only play offline and kill all associated process after closing the game. Again, I'm not running the game on a daily basis so it's unlikely this is affecting this persistant behaviour.

Grateful for any ideas.

Ian

I am unable to boot or wake up my Studio 1558 laptop. Here is everything that may be relevant to the issue.

I upgraded from Win7 to Win10 a few months ago.
The only issue I had after the upgrade was that coming out of sleep mode required a reboot a few times (but not every time).
About two weeks ago I put the computer in Sleep mode.
When I pressed power to wake it up:

The keyboard lit up
I hear the fan start
I hear the optical drive engage
I get a black screen.
I do not hear any beeps.

Pressing the power button again immediately shuts everything down.

Here is what I've tried to get a response:

Removed battery and AC then held down power button to discharge. Result: nothing.
Pressed Fn+F1 with an external monitor attached. Result: nothing.
Pressed D while powering. Result: Screen flashed different colors but didn't boot.
Pressed Fn+F5 while powering: Result: nothing
Created a Windows10 installation CD (on another computer) and tried to reboot so I could run Repair your computer. Result: nothing except now...

I can't eject the CD from the optical drive
Pressing D no longer flashes the screen

So I've tried everything I can find. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I am running Windows 7 Pro x64 and I am having an issue where my computer goes into sleep mode, fails to wake from sleep, strangely resumes its state once I do a cold restart, and then after restarting again, refuses to boot.

Here is what's happening step-by-step:
Computer goes to sleep based on the time set in the Balance Power options scheme. Fine. Often, computer wakes up perfectly fine from moving the mouse or pressing a key. Fine. Very occasionally however, upon waking up the computer, the lights, keyboard lights, fans and everything else except for the display comes on. I am forced to do a cold shutdown by pressing the reset button. Upon booting up, Windows displays "Restarting Windows" rather than "Starting Windows" and resumes its state when it went to sleep. Strange but OK. Everything seems to work normally. The problems come in when I then do a shutdown or restart after it has resumed from the cold shutdown. The computer shuts down perfectly fine but during the next boot, freezes right during the animation of the windows logo and immediately restarts the computer and launches into the DOS-looking prompt asking whether I want to do a Startup Repair because the computer failed to boot.

I have tried Startup Repair from HD and from the Windows disc and neither have done anything. I am usually forced to just reformat everything and start anew. This problem recently started occurring after I installed an Intel X-25m 120GB ssd and put th... Read more

Answer:Windows fails to wake from sleep, then corrupts boot

Hi,

I just recently got hit with a similiar problem, it unfortunately resulted in a corrupted BIOS that is unrepairable, it ends up locked in a low power state. There is no one single reason why Windows fails to wake up, and it's kind of a common problem. From the research I've put into it, hardware and the version of Windows does not matter. You'll either suffer from it, or you won't. My recommendation would be to disable both your display and PC sleep settings, and stick to manually shutting down and a screensaver to completely avoid it before any possible hardware damage is inflicted, and until there is more information available on it. The CPU, mobo and PSU are the most likely to become damaged.

If you still wish to use Sleep, make sure all your drivers are up to date, along with Windows, might make a small difference.

If you have another system available to you, or are able to borrow a mates, go ahead and use it to test your hardware for faults incase your situation is hardware based, and not failed coding on Microsoft's part. Also on that note, try removing your SSD for a week or two (or however long it usually takes before your system decides to sleep in) and see if it solves it, and post back with results.

I would still keep an eye on here, no less, incase a solution comes to light. Go ahead and do some Google searches on the issue, the plethora of possible fixes people have tried may work for you.

If possible, can you recall anything else you have ... Read more

Hi there,

So in April I decided to go all in on an Alienware 18 which I use for business and pleasure. After a couple weeks I started noticing the computer would not wake from sleep during extended times such as over night. I would simply close the lid at night and open it in the morning where the HDD light would come on and then the computer would be frozen in a state with a black screen before bootup where I am forced to hold the power button down to reset. It would then tell me that the computer was shut down incorrectly etc.

I finally had Dell tech support work on it who were absolutely fantastic at the time. They went through all kinds of system setting changes including how the computer sleeps, updated video and MANY other drivers including a reinstall of windows. Problem persisted.

Next they sent a tech out to replace the Video cards... problem persisted.

Next they replaced the HDD's, motherboard, and video cards again... problem persisted.

They were completely stumped so they sent me a brand new system which is even better than the last one I had!

After a few days I noticed this system is doing the exact same thing. I called tech support and the original guy is now in another department so I'm dealing with a new guy now who is starting from scratch again with this system. I spoke with their manager as this guy wanted to reset the computer to factory again and he also suggested that they are 99% sure that a reinstall of windows (or an alien res... Read more

Wednesday I installed Windows 10, upgrading from 8.1 & have had unacceptable boot & sleep wake times (7-12 minutes) and application not responding errors since. The only odd part of the install was AMD video updates, which I have backed out & reinstalled but no impact.  I searched for fixes and tried microsoft fixes like cleanmgr, msconfig & services.msc to remove unneeded items in hopes of improving boot time. Recently my Dell XPS laptop on boot up or waking from hibernation has a few horizontal lines scrolling upwards; sometimes it has a gray screen with lots of horizontal lines on it. If I move the laptop lid back and forth the screen is fine.
I have run Dell diagnostics and all is reported as OK. I have taken the back off and all seems OK. I assume there is a connector between screen and computer but I cannot locate that. I assume that if a display setting has changed, the screen would be constantly poor?

I am new here. Hoping someone can help me out with this issue. I work in IT so am not a complete computer bonehead and am at my wits end with this.

My laptop is about 4 years old, it's a toshiba. For whatever reason, it started taking 5+ minutes to wake up from sleeping. If it sleeps for an hour, it's OK.. but if you leave it sleep all night and try to wake it up in the morning, it's quite cranky. After the 5+ minute wake up, it performs as normal. It was running Windows 7 Home 32 bit.

Troubleshooting steps that I have taken are as follows.

Reinstalled windows. Issue was resolved! but after about 2-3 weeks, issue came back. I thought maybe it was some type of windows update, so I reinstalled windows again and paid closer attention to the updates. Issue presented itself again after 2-3 weeks, and there were no updates immediately done prior to it starting.

I started to think maybe it was something related to my hard drive, so i performed laptop surgery and swapped out my original hard drive with a solid slate drive, and installed windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (this laptop can support 64 bit so I figured why not upgrade.).

issue again was resolved for a few weeks, and now it's back to taking 5+ minutes to wake up again.

If you're turning the laptop on from scratch, it takes 10-15 seconds tops. if you're restarting, it's 10-15 seconds tops (man, I love SSD...)... if you're waking itup within the hour, its 1-2 seconds. But anything longer then that, 5+ minutes.

It ba... Read more

I've started to have a number of debilitating problems with my lumia 950, which is a shame because they are the same problems that made me leave android for the WP platform. To start off, my phone has been randomly restarting. The restarting seems to have started after the anniversary update version 1607. There's nothing common between one reset to the next, just that they become more frequent as battery life reduces (starts at around 80%). This is also sometimes accompanied by a streak yellow across the screen. I don't know if this is relevant or not.
My second issue, which has been happening the longest, is that the screen will sometimes be completely off when I wake up the phone. I will put the phone into sleep with the power button, and when I wake it up with the power button the screen is black. I know the phone is awake because windows hello will try to sign me in. I have reason to believe that the touch digitizer is also still working. This is fixed either by trying to sleep cycle the phone or by holding down the power button until the phone prompts me to power it off. This seems to wake the screen up. the screen also sometimes wakes up when windows hello signs me in, but this is rare. This problem has become less frequent since the anniversary update.
My third problem is that sometimes the touch digitizer doesn't work on wake. This is similar to my last problem, except that it always goes away by sleep cycling my phone. This problem has also become less prominent ... Read more

When my WinXPPro SP3 machine is in sleep/standby/suspend mode (S1 or S3), the fax modem wakes the machine some of the time but not all of the time. I want it to wake the PC every time, with 100% reliability. (When the PC is up and running, the modem and the machine receive faxes beautifully.)

What do you suggest?

Modem: Conexant D850 PCI V.92 Modem with recent driver update to version 7.67.0.50 (7/3/2007) (but this problem is the same now as before with the 2004 driver version)
PC: Dell Optiplex 755
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 @ 2400 MHz
RAM: 2GB, of which 1.4GB is usually free
BIOS: A14
OS: WinXPPro SP3 with all updates
AV: Avast Home Free
Anti-spyware: SpywareBlaster Free, Spybot S&D Free and AdAware Anniversary Free
Fax software: MS Fax Console that comes with WinXPPro SP3
Printer/Fax Printer: HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 Wireless AIO (model A909g)
Screensaver: XP logo after 9 minutes; do NOT show welcome screen on resume
Power Settings: Home/Office Desk; Turn Off Monitor after 10 mins; Turn Off Hard Disks Never; System Standby after 20 mins; System Hibernates Never; Do NOT prompt for password when computer resumes from standby
Home network Ethernet connection: Intel® 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection card with all Wake on LAN settings ON.
Browser: Firefox latest but use IE occasionally when necessary
Email: MS Outlook Express 6 to POP3/SMTP email service
Misc: I also run LogMeInFree version 4 on all my home computers

Thanks.

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 with WinXPPro SP3, 2GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo E4600, and it is unreliable for Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring. I also wonder whether my Standby - Sleep - Suspend (S1 or S3) is working correctly.

When the PC is in Standby - Sleep - Suspend mode (S1 or S3), Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring work some of the time but not all of the time, and I'd like them to be 100% reliable.

These may be two different problems, but your advice will be appreciated. (Also, if I should post in a different forum, please advise.)

My Network Card is an Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection, and I recently upgraded its drivers using "generic" PROXP.exe from the Intel website, although this has not helped the problem. The specific driver file e1e5132.sys is now from 2009 -- it used to be from 2007. But, as I say, Wake on LAN from Standby was not and is still not reliable, both before and after the driver update.

In Settings .. Network Connections ... Local Area Connections ... Properties ... Configure ... Power Management, all the Wake on LAN options are checked ON:

- Wake on Directed Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet from Power Off State
- Wake on Link

The NIC card's Diagnostic checks are all OK.

My fax modem card is a Conexant D850 PCI V.92 Modem, and I have the most recent drivers dated 7/27/07, version 7.67.0.50. In Settings ... Phone and Modem Options ... Modems ... Properties, "Allow this device to bring... Read more

More to above: Dell has suggested I must re-install Windows. I've never done that, and I realize I'd probably lose all my applications and data - no good. Seems to me that's like using an atomic bomb to kill a mosquito. And why should I assume that will work?

But is there a way to re-install -- or maybe fix -- Windows that leaves everything else safe?

FYI - About a month or so ago, I ran SFC (System File Checker) in repair mode, and that didn't help with this problem.

Any ideas?

Hello. I'm looking at this laptop: http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-15-3542-laptop/pd?oc=fncwg2327b&model_id=inspiron-15-3542-laptop

I would like to know if it has wake on LAN and wake on RTC or not.

Answer:Solved: Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Series - Wake on LAN & Wake on RTC?

Since I did not get an answer here, I went ahead and ordered the machine anyway, and took a chance. It does NOT have either feature in it.

It passed my other tests, so I'm keeping it and the next computer I get will probably have both of those features, but for this one, I guess I'll live without, since the network isn't finished to the point where I could actually use it anyway yet.

When I put my computer in sleep mode, it won't 'wake up'. I have to manually turn off the computer and then start it up again. This has happened twice. I'm not putting it into sleep mode until I find out what's wrong and that's exasperating as I normally leave my computer on all day so I can periodically play my games.

I have a c200 425 3gu all-in-one that has been very frustrating for 2 issues.   Since I've had it: 1.  On booting the computer, the screen is black.  I have to put it in sleep mode using fn/pc key, then once the power button is flashing (which sometimes takes several fn/pc hold downs), i think push the power button briefly.   Then the monitor display led turns on showing the monitor has been switched off.  Then I push the monitor power button and I have display.  If I put it to sleep instead of turning off computer, it does the same thing.    I have waded around the Lenovo support site until I feel like puking.   There must be a simple fix and it must be a problem on more than just my machine.   Very frustrating.     2. Slow.   I have DSL, which isn't great but i regularly get 3MB download.   On my Dell laptop using a wireless connection, I have this speed.   On my bluray player I have this speed, again a wireless.   But on the C200, I have half the speed, whether wired or wireless.   I've turned off all virus and malware software, deleted all uncessary programs - plenty of hard drive space.   There is no gaming software or any fancy software.   This machine is just used for web surfing.   1GB Ram.   This thing should be faster.  Any ideas?

hi Lews,

Welcome to the Lenovo Community.

Regarading your questions, try to:

1. Reboot the computer in Safe Mode . If the problem doesn't occur, open Device Manager (click Start > Device Manager) and under Display Adapters, uninstall the display driver (this can be an Intel GMA3150 or Nvidia G305M). To reboot into normal mode, open msconfig and under General Tab, set it to Normal Startup and observe.

If the issue persists, but can hear something on the background, there's a possible short on the function board (this is the chip that controls the buttons at the lower right side of the screen) and you will need to contact Lenovo support for service. Support phone list here.
2. For slow Wifi, If you have the Atheros AR9285 Wireless Adapter and running Windows 7, you can try to:
a. Update your wireless card driver to v10.0.0.75, get it here.
b. Depending on your brand of router, make sure you disable WMM (Wireless Multimedia) and WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)
c. Use WPA/WPA2-PSK TKIP or AES encryption.
d. If you have a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz), try to use only 2.4Ghz band.
e. After applying steps a-d, try running a speedtest again via www.speedtest.net

Let me know your findings.

Cheers.

I don't know whether I have a malware problem, or a hard-drive-in-death-throes problem, or what. But I figured it was best to start here, so if it's not a virus I can go over to the XP forum with that ruled out.

Over the past few months my desktop has been steadily driving me nuts. First it began giving me BSODs at random intervals, anything from a day to a month apart. (Currently, about once every three weeks.) The most common error is 0x0000008E, but I've also had 0x00000019, 0x00000024, 0x1000000A, 0x0000004E (PFN_LIST_CORRUPT), 0x0000007F, 0x0000000A (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL), and 0x00000050 (PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA). Usually it crashes at startup, but it has taken as much as twenty minutes. I've tried defragging the hard drive, using a registry cleaner, and replacing Sygate firewall (see below) but nothing appears to have worked.

Then Sygate starting occasionally crashing while I was online. I replaced it with PC Tools free firewall, which hasn't had any problems. (Yet...)

Somewhere in the last several months (hard to say whether it was before or after Sygate and the BSODs, it seems to have been creeping up for a while) Firefox developed an increasing tendency to hang. It reached the point where it was basically non-functional for a good quarter hour after connecting. During that time doing anything - maximising or minimising windows, accessing the start menu - took forever. Then Firefox started crashing - constantly. I worked my way through the official trou... I am trying to upgrade my hard drive and clone the old one to it in my X201. I have been told that I need to first replace the old hard drive with the new one, then boot off the old one via USB. I can then clone the old one to the new one. When inside the system, my hard drive boots just fine. However, when I hook up the hard drive externally and boot from it, it gets to the Windows logo then blue screens very quickly and reboots. Your suggestions are much appreciated.

Answer:When internal, hard drive will boot just fine. When USB, hard drive will not boot (blue screen)

I had the same issue when upgraded HDD to SSD in my x220. I think it's Lenovo hidden partittion related behavior (System_DRV in my case). And MBR of course. Just swap the drives and clone the old HDD to the new one.

I have ASUS G72.
Logmein software is able to wake the computer up with On Board Wake up is disabled or enabled in BIOS.

I have also Toshiba L505D.
Logmein software can wake the computer up only if Wake up on LAN is enabled in BIOS.

What is the difference between ASUS BIOS's On Board Wake up option and Toshiba BIOS's Wake up on LAN option?

UPDATE: I found out that ASUS's Option was for diskless boot and using network hard disks as hard disks. Nothing to do with Wake up on LAN.

Answer:Difference Between Wake up on LAN and On Board Wake up on LAN ???

One thing that could make a BIG difference here is the fact one is a PC and the other is notebook. The ATX Form Factor standard for PCs calls for the power supply to deliver +5Vsb standby voltage to various parts of the motherboard, to include the front panel power switch, RAM (for hibernate modes), and various devices (keyboard, mouse, NIC) for such "Wake on...". commands.

A notebook, however, does not have this standby voltage because obviously, it would run down the battery if the charger is not plugged in.

This has happened just recently. I've booted from this CD in the past to reinstall my OS. This time I boot from the CD after going through the boot up scripts (loading UI components and such) the last boot up item is "Starting Windows". Anyone who has booted from an xp or 2000 cd is familiar with this process, it takes just a minute or two and then the standard options show up: create a new OS, restore a new OS, and quit (are roughly the options on the main page). Well, instead of options it crashes. The first time it crashed before showing the main options screen it simply stayed blue, the same background color with two "=" equal signs in disarray on the top left of the screen. Clearly something went wrong. I tried to boot again, same result. The third or so time, it simply "bluescreened" that is, actually crashed with the white text prompting me to check my hardware. It continues to bluescreen crash when I try again. What could be wrong? It boots up to "Setup is Starting Windows" and then crashes. Memory, processor, mobo, DVD drive, P/S are all fine. I can boot to my HDD OS no problem. I imaged and copied the CD data and got the same result with a new CD copy. Should I get a brand new CD?

Question: Hard Crashes

My computer has been crashing randomly while playing video games.  Specifically only Starcraft 2 (just because that's all I play).  The crashes have been becoming more frequent.  Sometimes I get an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, but other times, my computer simply restarts on its own.Even before I overclocked my processor (no voltage increases, just the processor is OC'd), the game would crash.  After I overclocked, I felt like the crashes were less frequent, but lately, I feel that crashes are becoming much more frequent.  Today I experienced four hard crashes.  A couple times I got the BSOD with said "IRQL" error, but the other two I had the computer simply spaz out on me and then restart on its own.  When my computer crashes, the audio loops for a couple seconds while the video becomes a little altered.  The video seems cropped with a black frame.I don't believe my overclock is what's causing the problem.  I'm afraid this is a GPU problem, or maybe a RAM issue, despite having ran the memory tester on the motherboard and the RAM had no errors.  What's especially strange to me is that when I tried to get rid of my OC settings by selecting the 'Optimal Default Settings' in the bios, my computer wouldn't even finish booting.  I mean I would get to the desktop but the computer would never finish loading programs.  It would simply hard freeze and force me to shut it off.So... Answer:Hard Crashes

I would suggest you to follow a few things in order to avoid the computer crashesThe most common reason for a computer crash is known as hardware conflict. Hardware conflict occurs when two pieces of hardware-a keyboard and mouse, for example-share the same interrupt request channel (IRQ). The simplest way to avoid this is by checking the IRQ's being utilized at a given moment, and then re-installing any device that is using a repeated IRQ. Random Access Memory or RAM problems could be causing your computer to crash. By mixing RAM chips of different speeds, your computer will be forced to run them all at a lower speed and can hence cause a crash. You can avoid this problem by making sure all the RAM chips installed within your computer are the same speed, or by increasing the wait state of the RAM within the BIOS settings on your computer.  After a few weeks of use, the information on your hard drive begins to become fragmented. It is an excellent idea to defragment your hard drive every week or so to keep your computer running smooth and fast.  Fatal VXD Errors and OE Exceptions are typically caused by video card problems. These can usually be fixed quite easily by reducing the resolution of the video display.Another cause of computer crashes is software that has been installed improperly. The easiest way to fix this problem when you suspect software malfunction is by completely removing the suspect software, then re-installing it.All central processing units ... Read more

Question: Hard Drive Crashes

Alright, I have an Acer Aspire 7745G laptop ( a piece of $#%@ by the way) with two hard drives, C and D. I install all my games on D, seeing I had a hard drive failure on C three months into the warranty and now want to tax C as little as possible, seeing Windows is installed on there and I would be f***ed if C crashes with all my files. Now, after the warranty is over, C is running well, but just two days ago, when I game, multiple games keep crashing, like homefront, Black Ops, etc. On my speakers a buzzing noise sounds for a few seconds and the games freeze, then I get a CTD. When I go into my computer, hard drive D is no longer visible until I completely shut down the computer and then turn it on again. Then Hard Drive D works OK for about half an hour into gaming, then crashes again. Keeps repeating over and over again. Does this mean hard drive D is on it's last legs? Or maybe there's some drivers I need to update? I reinstalled the intel AHCI drivers of Acer's website, but no to no avail.
My specs:
Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium
Acer Aspire 7745G
8 gb ram

Question: hard drive crashes

my hard drive crashes when i copy files from one partition to another and the c: drive directory structure turns to gibberish if that makes any sense and i have to fdisk format and reinstall windows and program files. i've checked the cable , jumper setting and ran the diagnostics disk that came with the drive and the drive appears to be healthy mechanically and electrically. is windows 98 really that unstable ? i'm wondering , if i back up the mbr and partition table could i just restore them after a crash to avoid reinstalling everything ? is the mbr and partition table the same thing and how would i go about backing them up. any thoughts ?

Answer:hard drive crashes

IS the drive set up correctly in the BIOS? Are you running any drive overlay software on the drive (for compatibility with large drives and older system BIOS)? Do you have the correct drivers for your IDE controller? Right click My Computer and select properties, go to the performance tab and if it says DOS compatibility mode you may have a controller problem. I wouldn't suspect the OS at all as being the culprit though.

I'm getting frequent hard crashes while running games fullscreen, with the occasional BSOD. I removed Kaspersky, thinking it could be the cause, run sfc /scannow, tried different video drivers, etc. I even rolled back to a time before the crashes were happening, but they persist. PC has been running fine for a few months until a few weeks ago.

Answer:BSOD, but mostly hard crashes

Hi Akirareturns,

Welcome to the 10forums

I highly recommend that you downgrade your BIOS to the most stable version, unless you've updated for a specific reason?

You say you removed Kaspersky, I assume you've installed it again as you thought it wasn't the cause?
I can tell you, the drivers of Kaspersky have been flagged all the way back to the beginning of last month.
Please remove Kaspersky and replace it with Windows Defender.
If any BSOD occurs while Kaspersky is removed then let me know by uploading another zip from the DM Log Collector please

I fairly recently got a new computer, and started w/ windows 7. I have since had the very occasional unexplained hard crash. Most of them occur when I'm not present. I did try to install ProTools 8, which was a complete failure, and caused a few hard crashes, but that's the only thing I know of that's a direct cause. I've since given up on ProTools, both because I'm sick of it, and it seems there's no reliable driver for the Mbox (which is also fine with me). Obviously, hard crashes concern me, but I have no idea how to go about determining the source.

I have:
Windows 7 Ultimate
AMD FX-4100 Quad Core
Gigabyte MB (and I can never seem to find a model number when I need it, but can keep digging if need be)
Nvidea Geoforce 9800 GTX+
8GB RAM

I don't do a whole lot with it. Normal interneting and stuff, and some recording programs (audition mostly), all just via line ins and line outs. I'm kinda just stuck restarting when bad things happen. They've been rare enough that I've just shrugged and moved on, but repeated hard crashes probably shouldn't be ignored, so...

Any help is appreciated

My PC shuts off during gaming. This usually happens after my PC begins to run really slowly (start menu loads slowly, 15-20 FPS in game etc).
When it happens my screens are first to go off to black and I get a no signal message. After this my USB devices like the LEDs on my mouse and
keyboard go off along with the LEDs on the graphics card. Then some fan starts spinning up really loudly (not sure which one as the pc crashes just after this).
And finally, my PC turns off with an audible click from the PSU.

So recently as you can see in this thread, my GPU has decided to die. For now though I've installed the latest Intel HD 4000 Drivers which should keep me going until the new year, when I can start looking at building a new rig.

Now since losing my GPU, I've ran into a strange and frustrating issue. Every now and then, my PC will crash - it will look like this, make an awful sound and then switch off after maybe 15/20 seconds.

Now I can't put my finger on what's causing it, it can happen when I'm playing CS, when I'm browsing the web, or writing in documents.

I'm about to uninstall the Intel HD graphics drivers to see whether that stops it, the issue will be then, I will not be able to play any games.

You can see my PC specs here.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Details
My PC shuts off during gaming. This usually happens after my PC begins to run really slowly (start menu loads slowly, 15-20 FPS in game etc).
When it happens my screens are first to go off to black and I get a no signal message. After this my USB devices like the LEDs on my mouse and
keyboard go off along with the LEDs on the graphics card. Then some fan starts spinning up really loudly (not sure which one as the pc crashes just after this).
And finally, my PC turns off with an audible click from the PSU.

Games
My PC tends to only crash on the most demanding games I play like BF1 and rarely on CSGO.This particular crash first happened a couple of days ago
but since I bought a new RX 480 its been crashing through simple DirectX errors in Battlefield Hardline and Battlefield 1and also blue
screens with 'kernel power 41' errors.

Question: Hard drive crashes

Hello all,
Last Feb I bought my son a Asus K50 laptop and since that time the hard drive (windows will continually try to start until the screen goes black) has had to be replaced 6 times, I thought it was the laptop but, I let him borrow my Dell laptop Latitude D610 (gets a DST short test error, error code 1000-0146) and he has crashed the hard drive on this one as well. What could he be doing to crash these drives? How can I prevent this in the future? Anybody need a son?

In advance thank you.

Tom

I'm getting frequent hard crashes while running games fullscreen, with the occasional BSOD. I removed Kaspersky, thinking it could be the cause, run sfc /scannow, tried different video drivers, etc. I even rolled back to a time before the crashes were happening, but they persist. PC has been running fine for a few months until a few weeks ago.

Files included. Thanks in advance.MPC-Thu_05_05_2016_144321_62.zip

I am having constant crashes, sometimes it takes ten minutes sometimes it takes an hour but Skyrim always crashes. First the sound goes. it might make a humming sound or repeat some audio, then the screen goes dark and I have to shut down the computer and reboot. Rig is in the sig. Its stock Skyrim, and this crash occurs only in Skyrim, nowhere else. I tried updating the video drivers, validating the files in steam, all updates installed, the obvious stuff but I am stumped. I am worried that if I try to play it will damage my computer. Most of the cases of crashes I have found online is when it crashes to the desktop but that never happens to me, it is always a hard crash. Has anyone heard of this happening? I haven't found a case that sounds quite like mine. Again thanks for your time.

Answer:Constant hard crashes in Skyrim

Sounds like your computer isn't 100% stable, I'd check temps first and if those check out run prime95 and furmark on it to stress it as hard as possible.

If those don't crash it then I'd run memtest on your computer to be sure that it isn't your ram.

If all those check out then we are back to square one. From here i'd uninstall all video drivers, directx, and microsoft redistributables, then I'd re-install them all.

If nothing after that then I'm not sure, maybe windows is screwed up or your hard drive is on the way out, either way an sfc /scannow and a checkdisk /r /f or something along those lines.

I hope someone can help. My computer has started to crash when I have a few things on the go. It usually happens when on the Internet, but not on any particular site or any particular length of time. It has only happened recently, but I'm not sure why.

I am running windows XP, and it happens no matter which browser I'm using. The computer is also running much slower than it was.

I have run a full virus scan using AVAST, which is also running constantly in the background, I have cleared the temp files, I have run every option using Auslogic Bootspeed, I have run Ccleaner and Spyblaster as well as Spybot, Regcure and Tuneup utilities 2008. I have also cleared out the startup menu to include the absolute minimum.

I've tried uninstalling and re installing IE, but that now just opens then shuts down instantly.

When the computer crashes, I can still move the cursor round the screen, but can't click on anything. Ctl, Alt, Del doesn't even bring up the windows task manager. I have to hold down the power button and restart the computer.

Any help much appreciated

Cheers

Chloe

I have had multiple instances of browsers not responding - white screen - both IE and Firefox. I check my event log and found two consistent errors: bonjour service and disk issues. First, should I uninstall bonjour? Second, is this suggesting that my hard drive is dying and needs replacing? the error messages are:
1) The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\DR3.
2) The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer:Hard disc causing crashes?

Yes, you can uninstall Bonjour, but you won't be able to discover other itunes libraries on other systems broadcasted around you. Can also reinstall iTunes if you want to keep it

Defragment your harddrive see if it can make it. Then check your disk for errors and automatically fix them and recovery of bad sectors:

First some background: In October of 2016 I bought an HTC Vive (virtual reality headset) and I loved it. I have over 2000 hours of use in mine. No issue there. The issues started in October of 2017 when, I was playing with my headset, and my whole computer just 'shutoff'. I don't know what the proper term for a computer restarting with a delay is, so I'll call it a 'shutstart'. Basically, when a shutstop occurs, my computer shuts down as if I had held the power button down, and then after 5ish seconds, restarts. Normally, this would just be concerning, but now it's at the point where I have had it shutstart during a reboot.

What triggers a shutstart, I do not know, but what I do know is that none of my tests have found the trigger. The oddest part about this whole ordeal is that the intensity of the game I'm playing doesn't have effect on the chance of the shutstart. It only ever happens when I'm in loading screens or menus. I would have assumed it would be related to my memory buses, but all the tests I did didn't show anything odd.
Tests:

Memory Stick Tests = (No errors)

CPU = Maxed it for an hour, No issues

GPU = Maxed it for an hour, No issues

CPU AND GPU = Both Maxed for an hour, No issues

Harddrives = No issues (NOTE, bought a new internal Hybrid SSD for all of my games and downloads.

Fans = All fine

Powersuply= More Power than my computer needs, Shouldn't be running out of power

Hello to all of you. I have an Intel Pentium 3 computer, with Me as the operating system. I recently a Western Digital external drive called the "My Book Essential". I plugged it in the first time, everything seemed to go well and then, it stopped. It froze everything. I tried again and this time nothing happened, my screen just froze and there were no peripherals installed. When i unplug it, the screen comes to life and I see D Drive cannot write to. A blue screen warning.
Now, I know that my usb plugs work well cause this week I plugged in a card reader and in less than 5 minutes it was working. According to WD my system needs no drivers for this external drive. I have read comments that it seesm to work well with XP but has trouble with Me. What should I do, return it? Use it to crack nuts with it ?

Thanks for any answers.

Hi I have a Dell Inspiron late 2011 model on which I recently installed Windows 8.1 32 bit. Soon after the installation, the system started crashing frequently showing BSOD. I got a new computer for myself, but now I am unable to access the hard drive from the old Dell one. When plugged in another computer, it says file system "other" under the disk management section. Moreover, whereas the hard drive had two partitions, now it's showing just one single partition and is asking me to 'format it before using it'. The hard drive is shown to be 'healthy' though. I have very important data in the hard drive, and I don't want to lose it.. Could somebody please help?

Answer:Hard drive not accessible after OS crashes

The OTHER drive is a hard drive partition which has not been formatted with the file system neither FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 nor NTFS/NTFS5. The OTHER drive can be caused by a number of reasons such as virus infection, format failure, accidentally shut down operating system, power outages, etc. When you access the OTHER drive, you will get an error message like "The disk in drive is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?". In this situation, if we click "No", the drive cannot be accessed. On the contrary, if we click "Yes", we will lose all of the files stored on this drive. I suggest you try some data recovery software.

Ok so i came home last night from a ****** day of the fair and going to megans house. I boot my computer to find out the blue sceen of death appears "unmountble boot volume" By the sound of that I know Win XP is going to need a reload. Im fine with that. But the messed up part is i hook the HD to another computer and theres nothing on the disk!!!! A complete RAW data partion 0/0kb or what the properties box says. Explain how a hard drive can just magically reformat itself as a RAW partition??? Ghosts?
Heres what the disk consisted of or HAD

- a C:Windows XP partition
- a Linux RedHat 9 partition
- F: Network drive partition

Even more wierd....when my HD is a slave...my F: is still intact and readable by other master HD. However the clicking the properties of C: thrashes hard drive and then tells me C: is not formatted....would you like to....bla bla bla shut up! Any help is needed and this doesnt seem possible unless a ghost came into my house and reformatted my drive. BUT.........my WindowsXP bootscreen loads...........

Answer:Hard Drive mysteroiusly crashes

Sounds like the controller on the HDD is stuffed - that's why when its slaved to another drive it works OK, because its being driven by the controller of the other HDD. You should recover what data you can and then return that HDD.

Hi... hope this is proper place for my (in future) questions:

I've 2 laptops; Toshiba came with Win8... not upgraded to Win8.1; then a Samsung, came with Win 8, upgraded to Win8.1. Neither came with Restore DVDs nor any way to burn them.

So... suppose I bring them to Win10... and a hard drive dies/needs replacement in 2-3 years (Toshiba HD crashed 3 weeks after buying but Toshiba warrantee solved that time)??

1. Will there be a Win10 (physical) DVD or, atleast, a way to build an ISO?

2. Would I have to go back to Win8... upgrade to Win8.1... then upgrade to Win10?? Each run 1-2 hours... total waste of time there.

3. Does the current Win10 FREEBIE include Win8?? Always seem to say Win7/SP1 and Win8.1???

4. Heard that Win10 won't update/patch if one doesn't keep their System Updates within 8-10 months... again... what happens if HD needs replacements??

5. For that matter... what happens if one buys a PC after 19Jul... it'll have Win10 and, again, HD crashes (needs to be replaced) 2-3 years later... no warrantee anymore nor a System Restore capability.

I know this sounds paranoid but... been there before (whether virus killed PC, HD died, change of motherboard, etc)... wouldn't be happy if Win10 doesn't give ME "power" to repair my own problems

Thanks in advance
Steve

Answer:What Happens if Hard Drive Crashes in 2-3 years???

1. Hopefully you will get access to ISO images, expected. Microsoft will allow you to perform clean reinstall from the scratch after it is upgraded for the first time.

2. No, just install windows 10. Upgrade way will not be needed than the first time only.

3. It is win 7 and win 8.1. Win 8 will not be upgraded to win 10.

4. Nothing relates to the HDD. For OEM computers, the motherboard may be a factor.

5. Again, nothing is related to the HDD. You can replace it whenever you want. Windows 10 activations will be per device, and device is the motherboard, not the HDD.

Recently most games and apps I open are not responding and then crash and I notice my hard drives disk usage spikes up to 100% during these crashes. I've installed CrystalDiskInfo to do the S.M.A.R.T reader/test thing and it said the health of my hard drive is good, so I don't get it. What can be the issue??

My Helix has developed one more annoying little quirk--when docked, it instantly hard-crashes straight to a black, dead screen. As if it was instantly turned off. No warning messages before or after. Won't even turn back on until it's removed from keyboard, at which point it appears to behave normally. Has this happened to anyone else?

Last night I installed a brand new Western Digital hard drive into my wife's PC. I partitioned it and set it up so window's sees it. Problem is, now the system keeps crashing every so often....it will either crash a game being played or completely shut down the computer.

The one thing that I noticed right off the bat was that the main hard drive is set to Master and this new drive is set to Secondary Master, but after the computer started up I figured it must be ok. That's the only conflict I can think of that might be screwing things up.

Any ideas on why it might be crashing?

Hello,

I've run into a pretty peculiar problem with a computer at work.. Whenever my colleague turns on her computer for the first time in the morning, and she opens up her e-mail messages (Outlook Express opens fine, the problem arrises when she opens up her e-mail message) or boots MS Word (2003) the computer hangs.

It seems to be a problem with explorer, although terminating the process and executing it again afterwards through the task manager doesn't solve it. Restarting also doesn't work as quite a few processes don't seem to want to terminate.

Doing a cold reboot is the only thing that works. And after that, she doesn't have any problems for the rest of the day. Until the next day.

Thx for the help

Answer:XP crashes after first boot

sounds like it could be a cold solder on the mobo. after the computer gets goin int warms up and makes a proper contact, then after the reboot theres no prob.

thats all i can think of neway

Question: crashes on boot-up

HiI have a problem with my Acer desktop running XP Prof that I thought I had remedied with a reinstall, but it seems not:Upon booting up I got through to the desktop page where I got a message 'Error - The file or directory is corrupt & unreadable' and the PC just tried to reboot itself. The reboot process got worse so that it would'nt even allow a safe mode boot. I formatted the HD and did a reinstall which seemed to clear up the problem but have just had the same error message occur and it has gone back into the boot-up loop.Could this be the Hard-drive? Can it work fine for two weeks after the reinstall, just for the same problem to occur again?Your thoughts would be much appreciated

Answer:crashes on boot-up

Have you tried checking the HDD with 'chkdisk'?

If it does not boot to desktop and ends into a BSOD loop, try to boot into Safe Mode; and then post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.
