Auto sort files in datelabeled folders

Question: Auto sort files in datelabeled folders

I have a problem that I just can´t seem fix myself.

This is the case.
I get a lot of reports auto sent from  my clients. They arrive as attached documents in gmail.

I usually download them and sort them by hand into client specific folders in google drive with the rapports date as folder name. This takes forever!!

The last days I have tried to automatically download them by filtering the emails in gmail and using Zapier to download into the correct client folders. So far so good.

But since there is maybe 20-50 files every day per client I need to find a way to automatically save in sub maps triggered by date.

I can make Zapier create a folder BUT since the trigger for creating that new folder is the same trigger that downloads the attachments I can´t figure out how to direct it.

Now is there any smarter way to do this? Can google drive auto sort into date labelled sub folders? Any other suggestion?

Thanx!

Preferred Solution: Auto sort files in datelabeled folders

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The "Customize this Folder ..." and "Folder and Search Options ..." and "Properties" choices don't seem to do anything. So, I have two major headaches (at the moment): 1) How do I stop Vista's constant auto-sorting of folders? If I change a file name or add a few files to a directory it automatically resorts everything! This is extremely frustrating ... especially if I make a naming mistake and don't know where to find the file! How do I stop Vista until I--and only I--decide to refresh the folder?2) How do I stop Vista from deciding (always wrongly) what "Type of folder" a directory is and forcing its own display and sort criteria on it--actually them as it decides about EVERY folder and doesn't follow MY choices! Why can't Windows do what I need it to do?!? My files and folders are all out of order when I try to access them from MS Word 2007 (using File, Open), and there is no way to sort them! BUT, when I access the SAME tree of files and folders from Windows Explorer, everything is sorted A - Z perfectly. It's just that when I access these same files/folders from MS Word (using File, Open) the files/folders are all randomly listed, in a jumbled up order, and I have looked everywhere for a Sort button, but can't find one. (I can sort from Windows Explorer, but that doesn't change the order of the files and folders accessed through Word, with the File, Open commands.

This is a new problem, they used to be perfectly sorted --- and I haven't downloaded anything or done any Windows updates recently. I'm running Vista Home Premium (64 bit) and Office 2007.

Answer:Can't SORT Files + Folders

Just for chuckles take a look in the Tutorials section and see if there's anything about the Standard File Open Dialog settings. If not there, try tweak sites like Major Geeks and Annoyances.

edit: btw I don't have or use MS Word so I don't know if it uses some other dialog. But one of those tweak sites should have a fix.

That doesn't say much.

It depends upon how you want to move them. If working in a single Folder you can change the view to Details then click the heading of each column to change the lineup. If wanting to change the lineup by name you probably will have to rename some of the files to fit the scheme you desire.

Answer:Sort folders and files together

Do you mean to have the files and folders mixed but in order?
If so, NO it can not be done. Windows has alway separated the files from the folders.

Hi,

i sort files by opening the folder then right click sort by name(descending)

is there a way when i select several folders
to sort the files in each folder by name(descending) in one click?

Answer:Sort files in selected folders

Welcome to the forum.

Windows Explorer sorting only effects how the files are displayed and does not change the contents of the folder in any way. How files are stored in a folder is fixed by the NTFS file system and cannot be changed.

Is it possible to sort your folders alphabetically while at the same time sorting your files on date?
I want to do this(see picture)

Answer:Sort folders and files differently

I never heard of split criteria. You could investigate the 3rd party file managers like Directory Opus, FreeCommander, Total Commander, Q-Dir etc..

If not mixed in one view a multi-tabbed file manager has the advantage you can set different sort and details for the same root folder and have the views come up together. Some file managers you can save tabs as a set or layout.

Edit: Also you could turn on the Treeview to see the folders on the left. There are Explorer enhancers like QTTabBar that add multiple pane capability to Explorer.

When I sort my folders using "date modified," instead of ordering everything, I instead get all of the subfolders sorted, and then below that everything else, so it looks like this:

FOLDER A: 10th Jan
FOLDER B: 7th Jan
FOLDER C: 5th Jan
Randomfile.png: 12th Jan
Randomfile.mp3: 11th Jan
Randomfile.exe: 8th Jan
Randomfile.zip: 6th Jan

However, I'd like the files and folders to be mixed together and organised chronologically, like so:

Randomfile.png: 12th Jan
Randomfile.mp3: 11th Jan
FOLDER A: 10th Jan
Randomfile.exe: 8th Jan
FOLDER B: 7th Jan
Randomfile.zip: 6th Jan
FOLDER C: 5th Jan

Is there any way to do this?

Why is there a huge delay on the sorting of files/folders in windows explorer?

If I enter a folder that has many subfolders and extra files, it seems to load everything at once in alphabetical order, then there's a delay while it sorts the folders and the individual files separately, also in alphabetical order. This delay can be something like 5 seconds with just a few hundred items, and it just grows from there.

What's the deal? Am I the only one experiencing this? How do I change this behavior to be more like XP... snappy and instant.

Answer:Explorer Slow to sort folders/files.

Hi MasterEvilAce.

Explorer is just like XP for me, snappy AND instant.
Is it just Explorer that lags like this for you? Is the OS otherwise snappy?

Hi,

Is there an easy way to sort files/folders using multiple criteria--say by size, date and folder for instance? A free utility perhaps?

and/or

An easy way to capture the data in Wins' file explorer (view=detail) that I can bring into EXCEL?

Thanks,

Answer:sort files/folders using multiple criteria

A directory lister program from krksoft seems fairly easy to use. Trial and error to get the output CSV file you want or need from the many options available. Otherwise, Windows has its own command prompt, 'dir', and plenty of options as well.

In windows file explorer I am wondering if its possible to list folder first then have the last accessed files right under the folders afterwords. I need to have the ability to see folders first , then last used / modified files.

If i list folders first now, then the last accessed files comes down at the bottom.

In Win 7 explorer, I note that whatever settings I use for file/folder sorting - it all appears to get over-ridden by an initial sort into a) folders and b) files. Even if a file and a folder have the same name (bar the extension) I cannot get the files and folders to intermingle as I expect.

What I get is a list of folders separately from the list of files. This is the same whether I choose List, Details, Content, etc views. I have attached a pic of a test folder I just put together to illustrate what I mean. The files and folders stubbornly insist on staying within their own groups - even though the "Group By" is set to "none".

Can this behaviour be over-ridden by some means?

Currently I can only get all folders sorted and then all files sorted. I'd like to get them to sort together. Specifically this is for my Movies drive, which has thousands of films... most are in folders, but some are just files.

I searched here and elsewhere, but did not find any answers specifically for Win10. I also tried Xplorer2 and tried to sort by 8.3 Name, but that still did not work. My ideal solution would not include 3rd party software.

I'm open to modifying system files if need be, I just do not have the technical skills to do it without a tutorial.

All assistance is appreciated. Thank you!

In my downloads folder if I sort by date, it shows the most recent folders AND files all in the same order, whereas any other folder it separates the folders and files into separate lists. I moved my download folder to a different drive and it went back to the separating practice. I want to know how I can re-enable that behaviour? it's much more useful for certain types of folders.

Edit: I may have been wrong about how it was sorting things.. but I'd still be thrilled to be able to make it put them together as I described.

What are the sort of empty folders and files one needs to be careful not to delete? And what are the best programs for empty folder and file deletion?

I am undertaking that systematic deletion for the first time. I ran Glary Utilities and found over 300 folders and removed them. Then I ran a freeware program named Remove Empty Directories and it found over 3000 more empty fiolders and files. (I suspect specialized programs typically do a better job at a task than multi-faceted programs.)

Re: What are the sort of empty folders and files one needs to be careful not to delet

Hey there conceptualclarity:

I've got a question on this subject. Been leery of removing empty folders, because I just haven't ever gotten it straight if programs automatically create a folder if the one the program is supposed to use is deleted. So do programs or does Windows create folder if one is supposed to be present but has been deleted? Any knowledge out there on this subject?

One other question. Are all logs .log files? If not, why not?

folders sort after filesWhen in "details" view I click on "name", "Date Modified" to sort the files, folders get sorted below the files.See the attached video. How do I prevent that ?I want folders to remain at the top at all times.

Answer:Win XP Folders sort files problem (Screencast video below)

If you click on "date modified" or "date created", Windows takes no account of whether it's a file or a folder - it sorts all of them according to the date/time criteria only. You can't have it both ways.If you want all folders together, above the files, date/time criteria must be ignored, so you simply click on the "Name" column. You can't have it in name order and in date order at the same time - impossible.

Windows 7 automatically organizes all my newly created folders and files even though I don't want it to. for example, if i create a folder, it will defaultly appear at the bottom of all the files; with my winrar files. However, after i exit the window and go back to the directory where i made the folder, the folder i created will now be organized and placed with the rest of the folders. How do I make it so that my folder can be placed anywhere and will not be automatically organized?

Hey,

Anybody happen to know how to disable Win 10 auto arranging files in a folder? You can obviously sort them in numerous way, but for certain folders I want to be able to manually rearrange my files (folders that contain music tracks). Apparently in WIn 8.1 you could right click in a folder, go to sorting and unclick "Auto Arrange", but that option doesn't seem to be available in Win 10. Thanks.

I got the update today and of course, everything was arranging alphanumerically. I quickly managed to get the files on my desktop to stop moving everytime I refreshed, but nothing works for anything in a folder, and Brink's tutorial no longer works. I have a large number of folders and files that I like to keep in a certain order and this is really aggravating me. Has anyone else come up with a fix?

Answer:Files in folders auto arrange after the Creators Update

After I arrange everything in a folder, the way I want, I rename everything to stay in preferred order. There are batch renaming progs that can add sequential numbers to the beginning of names in the desktop folder, if you have a lot, like I do, in Pictures folders. Good Luck.

Hello there & Happy New Year.

I have encountered this particular inconvenience on the 2nd day of 2012 while i was transfering photos and files into my PC with Win7.

In my Win7 PC, all files/folders created or modified within Dec'2011 and earlier are now all grouped under as "A Long Time Ago". This happens when I changed the folder to be "Group by Date" or "Group by Date Modified" with a combo of "Sort by type". I tried sorting in different ways of view to see if I can get it back to what it should be. Then i realised even folder newly created on 25 Dec 2011 is also grouped as "A Long Time Ago" too. I am not sure if this is an intended feature.

The only helpful part is that i will still see the newer files in chronological order if I sort by date modified on top of group by date modified.

I have been using this setting for folder view even for Win XP. As for Win XP, i will get "Yesterday", "Last Week", "Last Month", "Last Year", "Two Years Ago" and ultimately the whole chunk of much older files under "A Long Time Ago". Such perfect chronological order.

I tried to google for a while and not much of returns to this issue I am having. Perhaps majority of people does not group their files/folders in such way. But for me, I like the way how it was displayed that I know i have edited/created/moved whichever files/folders last year, the previous month or ... Read more

I always have to go through the options and add the Date Modified first. Gets very annoying so maybe some expert out there can tell me how to do this?

Question: Auto Sort

Hello,

I am writing requesting further information regarding a prior post from "phil18646" dated 02-04-10 titled "A Newbie Needs Help - Automatic Sorting Excel 2007". I just created a spread sheet and applied your code that you supplied in the previous article, and made the appropriate changes, and substitued 8 columns instead of 4. Your code has me off to a great start; however, I would like to know can it auto sort by one column then by a second (value or target)? Also have you ever figured out how to get around inserting a "space" in the empty cells to activate the auto sort?

My goal is to have it sort by the "address" column, then if there are more than one complaint against that address it would also sort by chronological order (date) "date of complaint" column.

Answer:Auto Sort

Well, you would set up your sort function to always sort by the given combination of cells you'd ever want it to prioritize. Part of the auto-sort functionality is that it is pretty self-determining based on the criteria. (eg - Let's say the same address has two complaints on the same day but with different 'priority' on each, then a different complaint on a different day. You could auto-sort 1st on Address, 2nd on Date, then 3rd on priority) The order will simply come out as planned.

When it comes to what triggers your auto-sort function, a lot of how you proceed will be determined by the lengths to which you're willing to go and how dummy-proof you want it to come out.

You can put some code into the 'Before Update' section that will: A) Ensure that each of the necessary cells are filled and save off those values to global variables, B) Once all of the relevant values are filled-in, call the Sort function; C) Conduct a search for those values in the appropriate cells; then, D) activate the new row that the search located so that the data entry will appear seamless. <There's all sorts of code that needs to go into making sure that this works the way you'd want. Research, particularly, the 'target' values as you can glean which row/column were most recently updated as you in put in validation checks, even auto-populate today's date if desired. I've written some code for auto-populating cells on 'before ... Read more

Question: How to auto sort !

Hi. I have a problem with the desktop.

I want it so that everytime something news is downloaded or put onto desktop it will immediately put itself immediately below the last file.

Mine can do this problem is everytime it sorts by names ... i am unsure what to do.

Plz help me

Answer:How to auto sort !

Not sure if i understood you properly but you can try this :
Right click > sort by > Date Modified.
This should and will work IMO bcoz every time u put a new file its date will be greater than the date of the last file so itll automatically "put itself below the last file"

BTW if the file u wanted "below the last file" appears as the 1st file then simply repeat the procedure again.

Hello.

Seeking help with a worksheet/Sorting question.

I have a three worksheet workbook. The first is a master list of First/Last names, phone extensions and office location and is sorted alphabetically by last name.

The second worksheet pulls name and extension (using formula:=Sheet1!A1) and is sorted by extension.

The third pulls name and office location (using formula: =Sheet1!A1) and is sorted by office number.

If I add a name to Worksheet1 at the end of the list, it transfers into Sheet2 & 3, but is not sorted in the sort defined sort order. I'm trying to figure out how I can enter data into the master on Sheet1 and when I move to sheet2 or 3 have that data aoutmatically refreshed or resorted so that it is in the appropriate sort order.

I am guessing that macros may be the answer, but thought it was worth an expert opinion first.

Thanks in advance.

I am looking for a simple, VERY simple solution to automatically sort data as it is entered. I have columns A:G and may add more columns later, I will continually add rows, daily. I don't not want to have to sort this manual through the sort function. I want to enter the data in the row, press enter and it sort itself automatically. Okay, I've gone through the fora here and tried to modify some of the macros to do what I want, but I've crapped out. I'm not a coder, and this is a bit deep in Excel for me.

What I'm looking for is a macro that will sort 30 groupings of 5 numbers in descending order (within each group, not with all of them).

I've tried recording a macro too, and that was pretty much a disaster.

Each of these clusters of five gets sorted, then the middle three are averaged in an adjacent cell. The averaging I was able to take care of easily enough, but I would like the sorting to be automatic, just to save keystrokes/mouse clicks.

Here are the clusters that I want to sort in descending order:

A9:A13
A15:A19
A20:A25
A27:A31
A33:A37
A39:A43
F9:F13
F15:F19
F20:F25
F27:F31
F33:F37
F39:F43
K9:K13
K15:K19
K20:K25
K27:K31
K33:K37
K39:K43
P913
P1519
P2025
P2731
P3337
P3943
U9:U13
U15:U19
U20:U25
U27:U31
U33:U37
U39:U43

So for instance, A9 through A13 are sorted from high to low and A10, A11 and A12 are averaged in B10. There's probably a more elegant way of doing the averaging, but I'm just using the SUM average.

There are 4 tabs to the workbook, all just like the above. I assume that I can use the macro... if I ever figure it out... on each of the 4 tabs.

I'd appreciate any help anyone can provide... I'd like to learn to do it myself, but even with all the reading I've done, it stymies me every time.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Oblivious... Read more

I am looking for a code to auto sort in ascending order some division numbers in column H of my excel sheet. The information that needs to be sorted is located from B9 to H36. I do not want it to sort column A at all.

Answer:Auto Sort Excel Sheet

We need a little more information before we can offer a possible solution.1 - In your first sentence you say "auto sort in ascending order some division numbers in column H." In your second sentence you say "The information that needs to be sorted is located from B9 to H36."So which is it? Column H or B9:H36?2 - What will be the trigger for this "auto sort"?3 - What is in the sort range? You used the words "division numbers" which to me implies formulas. If that is the case, then I believe that the formulas will need to be replaced with the values before the range can be sorted.Perhaps a small example of your data would help. Hello, below I have listed a spreadsheet in Excel that represents column A-F. Column E contains formulas that come up with a number based on the data in columns B-D. Column F is just a copy of that data that I will manually adjust if needed.

I have all the rows sorted by the data in column E largest to smallest in descending order. The data in columns B-D is copied from data it finds on Sheet 1 of my workbook.

As that data on Sheet 1 updates, and the subsequent data in column E updates simultaneously, I would like rows on this sheet to automatically update it's sort according to the change in data(via formula) in column E.

I'm sure this will take macros, but I need help coming up with what to put in there. Thank you in advance!

Hello there,

I (finally!) figured out the AutoSort macro, but I'd like to take it a step further if possible.

I have columns A,B,C,D that I want to auto-sort by date (column A). I THEN have columns F,G,H,I that I want to auto-sort by date (column F) INDEPENDENTLY from the first four columns. Is there a way to do this?

If this is possible, I eventually want about 5 groups of columns to be able to auto-sort independently from each other on the same worksheet. Thanks in advance for any advice, I'm new at all of these features.

Answer:Auto-Sort groups of columns in Excel

Hi Alex,
Welcome to the forum

Is there any relation between the values in each column?

If it's just individual lists per column, you just apply the sorting to each column separately

When sorting you only select that particuler column and sort it in either way you want.

If you take the whole table then then you will be able to sort one column let's say upward and the next wornward but they remain related.

Else just like I mentioned: sort each column as you like but the only select one column at a time but ONLY IF THERE IS NO RELATION BETWEEN THE COLUMNS else your data is no longer trustworthy

Oh, and something import, don't forget to mention the Excel version you're using

Hi Forum! I've been on Windows 7 for a week. One difference I've noticed between 7 and Vista is I can't see any way to sort files in a folder (say, video, jpegs, or documents) by size. They are all automatically sorted by name. Is there a way to do this I just haven't found yet?

If you click the size tab it sorts by size, but then you probably know that.

This seemed like a customization thing... I tried searching but in the first three pages of results I didn't find anything that related to what I was looking for. That's all my disclaimers.

So I want to be able to sort a list of folders by their size, preferably with freeware of course. Is this possible? Is it crazy? I realize that I can hover a mouse and view the size of individual folders but I'm culling a music directory with over 15,000 artist folders in it and I want to see which ones have massive discographies and which ones contain just a few songs. Repetitive and menial tasks like hovering 15000 times is the reason we made automated computers Is there any way in Win 8 to do this or do I have to wait for the software to catch up?

Usually when I do this it will sort folders and shortcuts separately. Is there anyway to list them all alphabetically?

Answer:Is there anyway to sort folders and shortcuts by name?

1. There is a partial solution within Windows explorer itself:

right-click into the folder, group by Nameif you like, you can then select a sort by Name

This will give you intermixed folders and files, but will insert some separators that group by letters.

2. There is a trick - type * in the search field

This is not exactly equivalent to the normal explorer view.

3. Use a 3rd party file manager such as xplorer?

Hi,

Somehow my sort order has been changed somehow. On another post I see that it goes to the view tab to change the order, however the view tab is not shown when I open a folder. What I see is "organize, share with, Burn, and new folder.

I would like to change back to normal aphabetical order. How do I do this?

best,

Mike

Answer:Sort Order for folders

Windows Explorer Auto Arrange - Disable - This Tutorial disables Auto Arrange in all folders except Libraries, to allow free sorting.

When you disable Auto Arrange and either move or rename a folder, it will refresh Auto Arrange in that specific moved or renamed folder ONLY, after each time you move or rename it. Auto Arrange is still disabled for that moved or renamed folder, but you will have to arrange the files back to whatever non-auto arranged order you like after moving or renaming the folder.

just setup another notebook with 8 - this is an older HP dv6244us - core 2, pretty plain system.
no matter what I'm typing in... notepad, wordpad, browsers... here in this right now... I get this odd hesitation and then catchup, sometimes garbling my keystrokes [the characters are plain, but acts like 'predictive']
the feel is similar to that awful Google read-ahead "instant" function.

is this some bright idea in 8 or just a weak driver/device linkage?

also the trackpad is WAY sensitive... if anyone has ideas. I have touchfreeze installed but it can't contend with this one. seems a puff of air is all it takes

Answer:IS MS experimenting with some sort of keyboard auto-correct thingy?

I have not experienced anything like that nor have I see any posts on that particular problem, but I've only been a member since early June. The only thing I've noticed is sometimes the typing cursor stops blinking, but when typing begins it starts blinking again. There is a global spell check in 8 (curser within the misspelled word then press shift/F10). I don't think that has anything to do with your problem. It is older machine. Did all the drivers load correctly? Check in device manager? When was the machine used last? Perhaps some or all of the keys are a little sticky mechanically? Try typing each key individually and watch to see if that may be it. Have you performed a forum search on the subject?

I can't help on the trackpad problem for I don't have one, but that sounds like a driver problem. There is a way to use the compatibility mode for drivers.

I understand that by right clicking on the sorting bar you can choose and add dozens of ways to sort your files. How do I apply one (Date Accessed) not just for one folder, but for on the folders on my drive?

Answer:How to sort by Date Accessed in all folders?

I'm assuming this is what you are after.
1. Click the Start Menu Orb and then Search for cmd. Once that comes up Right-Click cmd.exe and SelectRun as administrator.
2. The UAC prompt will appear… Click Yes!
3. Now in the cmd prompt, Type in “ fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 0 “ and Press Enter.
4. Restart your PC for changes to take affect.

After restart
1. Switch the Window view to Details.
2. Right-Click category bar and Click More…
3. On the next window Scroll down and Check the box for Date Accessed and then Press OK.
That’s it! Now when you do Windows Searches it will pull up and show the Date accessed category.

Hello..i know how to sort individual tracks by album/artist or whatever but I'm trying to sort folders of albums in a main folder and for the heck of it can't figure out how to get it to do so.

Just to clarify this is my setup that I'm talking about:

D:\Music\Dance\Artist - Album Name

now in that Dance folder is about 75 albums/folders. All i can do is sort them by name. But I want to sort them by Album Name. I have the Album name column showing but its blank. I even added the folder to indexing but still nothing shows up.

Is there a way to do this?

Answer:How to sort folders of music by Album Name

To sort by Album name, you need Sort By > Album in the right click context menu. But it is not there.

Add it there.
Step 1: Right Click > Sort by > More .... In the Choose Details dialog, check the album box, click OK. Now Sort By > Album is rightly there.
Now, to add the Album column, you need to edit the music tags. I use MP3Tag in order to do this.

I am not always good at describing things so please bear with me and try to understand what I'm trying to ask, because I will probably make it sound different than what I mean.

I know when just opening Windows Explorer how to sort & group files and folders, that part is easy. My question however is, when uploading files to the 'net, how do I get the explorer window that opens to sort like the default Explorer window? For instance my pictures folder, I have set it to sort and group by date added, newest first. But when I go to upload pics to photobucket, I click the upload button, the explorere window opens, and the files are listed randomly. There is no sorting or grouping. In 2000, XP and 7 all three, however I sorted the main folder is how the upload folder displayed. I upload pics daily to photobucket, and every time I click upload the window opens, and I have to hunt through the whole folder to find the two or three newest pics that I haen't uploaded yet. The attached pics are "Regular_Snip" how I have main pic folder sorted and grouped, "Upload_Snip" is how the upload window looks, hopefully I made enough sense you can understand what I'm asking

Answer:Sort&Group folders for upload

Change view to Details then click on the Date column heading to change the sort order.

I have named some sub folders using this:month names using 3 lettersJanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDecI want Windows Explorer  (file manager) to sow then in order.I found some articles about this kind of thing, but not exactly  what I wanted.https://www.tenforums.com/general-support/17943-how-do-you-arrange-files-month.htmlIs there a way to do this? Any answer is welcome.

Answer:How can Explorer sort folders by month?

If you created them in order you can sort by date. Then the earlier month folders appear first.Otherwise you could prefix them with numbers, then sort alphabetically.Other than that you cannot have it "detect" on it's own that the names of folders are the short names of English Months and sort on that basis anymore than you can have it detect when folders are the names of periodic elements and sort them by atomic weight. The solutions you found apply to Libraries, not folders- but, you could use that. You can create a library, add the parent folder containing those month names, set it to Pictures, then opening that library and right-clicking and arranging by Month, as shown in the link with the normal pictures library. That will arrange based on the actual date of the last modification for each file and arrange then into sets. for each month and year.

I have a folder which has 493 sub folders. When I choose sort by name it does not do so alphabetically the way I expect ie. first by number and then by letter. The first 458 folders are sorted alphabetically as expected. Then there is another group of 35 folders at the end that are sorted alphabetically on their own for no apparent reason. For example in the second group is a folder called 1-Downloaded files 1. This should appear at the very top of the all 493 folders but instead appears at the top of the list in the second group. I want them all to be sorted alphabetically as one set not as two sets or groups. Your advice would be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Chris

Hi guys,

I would like to sort the files in a particular folder by, say, date modified, but NOT have this setting applied to other folders in my computer. For example, I would want the files in the other folders to be sorted by name. However, I can't seem to be able to do this in Windows 8 - changing the sort settings for a particular folder applies it to every other folder.

Is there a way to customize the sort settings for individual folders without having it applied across the board? I recall being able to do it in Windows Vista/7, but can't seem to find the option in Windows 8.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:How do I set sort settings for individual folders?

Hello Desaque, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The tutorial below can help show you how to set your folder views per folder. However, it sounds like you are in a library instead of the actual folder location. In a library, all included folders share the same folder view. Only in the folder's actual location will you be able to have separate folder views. For example, "Music" library versus "C:\Users\(user-name)\My Music" folder.

Hi All,

I really hope someone can help me. I've been looking through all the forums and haven't quite found a macro code that has worked for me. I know this is very simple, but I have no idea what I am doing. Here it goes....

I have a very simple expense report on Sheet 1 of an Excel (2007) workbook. In this worksheet, the first couple of columns simply list the expense items. However, there is a table with only 14 rows (including the header) of data (6-19). Underneath row 19 is a total row that sums the 2 columns of information (don't need to worry about this row but thought I'd tell you anyway). This table only has 4 columns as follows:

Column G - Code
Column H - Category
Column I - $ (this column is using the SUMIF function to calculate the expense category totals)
Column J - % of Total (this column is simply dividing column I by the Total $)

I don't know if this matters or not but there is also a pie chart linked to this table of information.

I would like this table (H6:J19) to automatically sort by % of Total (in descending order) any time I add new expenses so that I don't always have to sort manually.
If there is a way to do this, I would so appreciate simple instructions. I've attached a sample of what the report looks like.
I hope you guys can help!!!

Answer:MACRO NOVICE - Simple Auto Sort using Excel 2007

Hi Janel, welcom to the board

I think this should do the trick, I don't have 2007 here but I used your sheet in 2003

Add the following code the the Sheet1 project

Code:

Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
Sheet1.Range("G7:J19").Sort Key1:=Range("J7"), Order1:=xlDescending, Header:=xlNo, _
OrderCustom:=1, MatchCase:=False, Orientation:=xlTopToBottom, _
DataOption1:=xlSortNormal
End Sub

To do this just right-click on the Sheet1 tab and select view Code, you will automatically be in the VBAProject.

In the right screen paste the code above.

every time you change values in the list the range G7:J19 without hearders will be sorted by Total % descending order, th epoie chart will do it's own work since it's related to this table.

Happy coding.

I'm having a problem (Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit) with files in the Details view that are sorted by name not appearing in the correct order. But this isn't just "Filename" comes after "Filename I" or "Filename 1".

What I know about Windows' "alphabetical/numerical order":Punctuation marks and such come before numbers in file names.
Periods used in the filenames are fine, as long as the file extension remains intact.Certain characters such as a question mark (?) can not be used.

Numbers come before letters in file names.File names beginning with 1, 2, 3, etc. come after those beginning with 01, 02, 03, etc.
The more zeroes there are at the beginning of the file name, the more "first" it is in the list.

Letters are then sorted alphabetically. An "a" is the same as "A"; letters are not case sensitive.
The Problem:
For years now, I have had files numbered when I wanted them to appear in a directory in a specific order. In this specific case, I am talking about the order that I installed specific mods for the game Minecraft. If a mod was saved on my computer for a certain version of the game, but not installed, it would not receive one of these "order numbers" that I would give the installed mods.

The general format used to look like this:01 - game version mod one.zip
02 - game version mod two.zip
03 - game version mod three.zip
game version mod five.zip ------------ Note: fi comes before ... Read more

Hi all,

Please help me choose tools - service provider(s) and/or application(s) - for my goals.

I'd like to start sharing privately videos and photos in some private cloud drive with a group of close people. It would be sort of electronic photo/video album. Most computers are 8" Tablet PCs, OS is Windows 8.1.

There is a question how can I view these photos/videos when one (or more) of these people is offline. The best thing would be an application which automatically caches the photos/videos which are viewed most often or "starred" or "liked" most or "rated" as best. The application would cache (for offline viewing too when there is no internet connection) those mostly viewed/starred/liked/rated photos/videos on each computer, depending on which photos/videos were watched on that particular computer.

What I plan is just keep putting all the photos/videos (probably from all the same computers) to some cloud drive, and - the best thing would be - just let the mostly watched photos/videos to sort naturally in each cache. Or maybe there is some feature to rate photos/videos (somewhat like in windows media player).

Is there a way to auto-cache some amount (let's say up to 2GB or 5GB) of the most often viewed files (for offline viewing) instead of having all of them on those devices? I'm asking this because those tablet PCs have a rather limited storage capacity (and are also limited on internet connection quite often too).

A user has created lots of personal folders. Some of these folders when selected are showing as 'There are no items to show in this view' even though at the bottom left of the screen it says that it contains eg. 30 items.

These folders are sorting by default to 'by flag' even though the user does not use flags. If he chooses to change the sort manually to 'by From date' or any other field, the messages then show as normal.

The user would like to set a default sort order for all existing and any newly created folders. Is this possible?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to put this, so mods, please move if necessary.

In my computer at work (Win 7 x64), my folders have suddenly decided to synchronize their sort options. If I remember this right, previously I had different sort options in my folders. Some were sorted by date, and some were sorted by filename. For some reason now, if I sort one folder by date they are all sorted by date, or if I sort one folder by filename they are all sorted by filename. This is very annoying because I keep having to sort the folders every time I go to one that has to be sorted by one or the other.

It seems to me that each of the individual folders used to remember how they were sorted and stayed that way. This has only been happening in the last couple of weeks. I thought that there was a setting in Windows Explorer that you could set to "Remember" the folder characteristics, but I can't find it.

Any ideas to preserve my sanity would be greatly appreciated.

You have posted four different logs since the end of October,2007, here, here, here and here (where you also stated that your copy of XP is not not genuine). Also, each log appears to be from a different machine. This would amount to the abuse of the free service given in the forums. Please be informed that these threads will now be closed. Two questions:-

1. Does anyone know of a simple method to add titles, comments, or tags, to folders in Windows 10?
There was something called HobComment that worked on XP but there does not appear to be a Win10 X64 version.

2. Is it possible to have File Manager ignore definite and indefinite articles (the, a, an) when sorting by name?

Answer:Adding Title/Comments/Tags to Folders + Sort in File Manager

Hi, search syntax is fairly comprehensive- you may find sthg here:
Advanced Query Syntax (Windows)

(not certain if that's the latest spec)

Ok, folder tips. This works for me.. not ideal, but there..
Download and install this:
StyleFolder Download

You also need to do this:
You'll see your detailed pop-up description the next time you mouse over that folder.

Note: If you don't see a pop-up when you mouse over a folder, you need to enable a couple of settings. In explorer, click Change Folder & Search Options, and then select the View tab. Then, in the Advanced Settings list, select the check boxes for
Display File Size Information In Folder Tips
and
Show Pop-Up Description For Folder And Desktop Items.
Click OK.

========================
Now to add a comment, rt click the folder, click
Customise with StyleFolder.
The comment appears in the tooltip when you mouseover the folder.
The option to change the text colour doesn't seem to work

my mom has 6 years of photos on one of her 500GB HD's. She hates windows 7. Her latest complaint that I have not been able to figure out is folder sorting.

Mom has a folder called "camera dump" in the "my pictures" folder.
In the camera dump she has 6 years of folders containing photographs.

Currently windows 7 is sorting the left side screen like this:

1-18-2013
1-21-2014
2-05-2011
2-05-2012

The problem is mom wants them in proper chronological order.. In other words, all of 2011 in proper order Jan to Dec, and 2012 after that, and 2013 after that.

1-06-2011
2-29-2012
3-09-2013
5-28-2014
Can anyone tell me how to do that? Ive tried just about every sorting option I can find in windows 7.
I suggested to her that she use YEAR master folders, then put the months inside as sub folders.

Thanks.

Hello,
I use Windows 8 Pro and I have very strange problem.

I enabled display hidden and system files, but system auto-disable its... I make it about three times, always with the same result. I don't know what causes this problem, I can't reproduce its (it isn't after reboot).

Also I have similar problem with system restore.
I disabled it, but system turned it on again.

WTF?! Does my system better know what I need?!
I apologize for the tone, but it's really frustrating...

Answer:Hidden files - auto disable, restore auto enable?!

Hello lukasamd,

That's odd behavior.

You might consider resetting Windows 8.

In the Navigation tool, Windows 10 provides a list of ways to access folders and files, including Quick Access and a group of other file or folder names. If I click on something in the group of folder names, not all files in that folder are shown eg. 'Documents' is one folder name, but if I search under OS C: and find my 'User' name and the the relevant folder, there are more files there than show up using the group. This is frustrating as looking under 'OS C: Users' is time consuming and requires lots of clicks, and I'd have thought the main purpose of having groups listed was to avoid this.

Answer:In Windws 10, why do folders in libraries or Quick Access not show all files in the actual folders?

Help! I'm stuck.
I have a folder from which I need to delete a number of files but for each attempt to delete a file the error message comes up "Can't read from source disc or file". And yet the file can be opened in an application and the contents appear undamaged.
Thye same goes fort attemting to delete a folder, - the same error message appears. - "Can't read from source disc or file".
If I attempt to create a new folder so that I can download some images fromm my camera I get the error message "Unable to create the folder "New Folder"., - File system error (65535)".
Basically, the files / folders all seem to be OK and can be read by applications (Photoshop etc.) but I can't delete old ones or create noew folders. Any clues? Has some sort of overall disc protection been applied?
I'm using Windows 7.strong text

Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

I found this GREAT FREE program which can help to protect your files from all kind of Ransomware.
At the end is my video test and here is article from ghacks.net about this program.
The program is Abandonware but is working very good.

======================================================================================

Secure Folders is a free program for Windows that is available as a portable version and installer. It can be used to hide or lock folders, set them to read-only or block the execution of files.

If you share your computer at times, for instance in your family or when friends or colleagues ask you whether they can access it, then you may want an option to protect certain files or folders from accidental exposure.

Maybe you don't want someone else to spot your Justin Bieber wallpaper collection, financial documents or video files that you have downloaded from the Internet. Whatever it is, Windows does not really provide options to protect data from others if the same account is being used.

Note: it is best obviously to use different accounts, for instance a guest account for occasional users and accounts for colleagues or family members who work with the PC regularly.

Encryption is a solution but only if you keep the data encrypted while the computer is being used. It won't help you if the encrypted drive that you store all your secrets on is mounted at the time someone else accesses your PC.

I have the option "Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start or the taskbar" off.
However since the last update whenever I either copy or move a file into any folder windows puts that folder under the Recent group in the taskbar. Is there any way to fix this?

Answer:Moving files into folders puts them under Recent folders.

Is this a bug? I still haven't figured out if there's any solution.

They are included in FreeFileSync's list of files to be updated. I have never seen them listed before for a backup. X: is my internal HD which contains only documents, Pictures etc. No programs or system files.

What do they do and why would they be included in a backup of a drive that has only docs, pictures etc?

The first image is representative of several similar files with different numbers.

Thanks.

Answer:What sort of files are these?

WER, is Windows Error Reporting, these are probably just log files.

Try Free Commander as an alternative to Windows Explorer.

Free Commander does just what you're looking for. When you select a group of items, and you sort on a particular column heading or re-sort on a different column, the original selected items remain selected throughout.

Even further, if you select a group of items (e.g. a bunch of new ZIP/RAR files) and then right-click on the group (e.g. to invoke WINRAR from the context menu, to unzip each of the selected group), when the invoked function is completed the selected items will STILL REMAIN SELECTED (e.g. so that you can now DELETE the whole group of ZIP/RAR files you may not need any longer).

Free Commander is a 1-pane/2-pane functional alternative to Windows Explorer, but looks and feels like the "old fashioned" Windows Explorer from WinXP (or even Win98), so you might truly prefer it. It's got lots of additional functionality, and its interface (e.g. toolbar) can be customized as you want.

I've got 1 particular folder with tens of subfolders(with sub-subfolders) and I want to change the "arrange icons by" to size, ONLY for the prime folder+subfolders. So "Apply to all folders" doesn't help. I want to keep my current settings for all other folders. And I don't fancy manually going in ~100 folders to arrange them separately.Any ideas? Please!

Answer:Auto arrange sub folders.

The best way I can think to do this is using VBScript to do it for you. So your best bet may be to post this under "Speciatly Forums" under programming and ask someone if they have a script to do this.If builders built buildings like programmers wrote programs, then the first woodpecker that came along would destroy civilization.

Hello everyone again,
Does anyone know a quick way/method of sorting hundreds of thousands of files by month? The files I am trying to sort are very small (1-100KB) though there are so many of them. What I've tried so far is used windows search tool and selecting the date range in which I want. Due to the immense quantity of files, it takes about 3 hours to complete. Even when it completes, it takes even longer to move the files to a directory b/c I think windows has to search for the location again before it does the actual move. Is there a command prompt or script that I can use/create that says:
Select the files in these date range (ie: 6/01/2007-6/31/2007) and move them to a folder called 'June 2007'?

Thanks for your help

Answer:Quick Way to Sort Files?

Good databases can easily do it... Even Access... as will statistical databases such as Stata/MP: The fastest version of Stata (for dual-core and multicore/ multiprocessor computers), Stata/SE: Stata for large datasets, Stata/IC: The standard version of Stata, and Small Stata: A smaller, student version of Stata (for educational purchases only)
Take a look at researcher software, or academic software.

Hi all

I wanted to sort out video files taken over the past several years on Nokia phones and Iphones.

I had saved them on my laptop, but when I go to sort them either with Date, Date Modified or Date Created, it just sorts the videos from when I first moved the videos from my hard drive to my laptop.

Is there any way/software to get the metadata? for the videos?, I wanted to sort them in order of they were taken on the phones

Thankyou

I'm trying to sort a folder of files by the third line in each text document which is a computer name. The reason being the name of each file does not pertain to how I need to sort these items. After this, I need to count up the computer name that shows up the most.

morel_88, as I see it, you have two problems. #1 is the list itself. Since you just want line #3 of each, that sounds to me like a job for a batch file (Create a log file of results ?). Dunno just how to go about it, but maybe you can get help (?) @:http://www.computing.net/forum/prog...Once you have the list, sorting should be fairly straightforward. There's probably an easier way, but...HTHEd in Texas

I have a large music collection which I add to frequently.
My 'Albums' Directory is sorted by 'name' and grouped by 'date modified' so I can see my most recent additions at the top.

When I add new albums they obviously come under the group 'today', but after only a week or so they are moved to the 'earlier this year' group and then after a year to the 'a long time ago' group.

Id like more specific groups, like January 2012, February 2010 etc to make stuff easier to find and my more recent additions easier to recognize from each other.
Any way to do this ?

Is there anyway to sort files globally? It seems everytime I open or close a folder, it re-sorts it to another criteria from when I last set it.

For instance, I'll pick "ascending" and close the folder. Then when I come back to it later, it automatically switches to "descending" on it's own.

I'm really getting tired of having to right-mouse click the contents of a folder all the time to correct this.

Any way to solve it? Thanks.
