Arm laptops vs traditional laptops

Question: Arm laptops vs traditional laptops

I have an older HP Ultrabook, maybe 2012ish. It's showing it's age, and I'm going to be in the market of a new laptop this Summer. My main use this Summer will be for military training. Application wise, I'm going to be using Office 365, Chrome, and a basic video editor. The most important thing for me is portability (not being heavy) and excellent battery life, as well as reliability.
So, when Microsoft recently announced their new laptops working on the Snapdragon 835, I thought it'd be a perfect fit. But, I'm starting to have second thoughts. Are there Intel machines out there that have impeccable battery life, and that may run better because they are more native than the Arm machines?
My budget is probably around $800.

Preferred Solution: Arm laptops vs traditional laptops

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello.
In June 2016 our company bought Inspiron 5759. I used it at office, we have air conditioning, nothing that could cause overheating or other problems. In the end of July 17 laptop just turned off and didnt react on any actions. I brought to service center and they told it's the hub located on the same board with CPU. The only way to fix it is to replace the whole board which costs around 600 USD because there's CPU Core i7 in it. I was given another laptop Inspiron 5558 which was not used since winter of 2017 because it had problems with WiFi. I tried to connect it with LAN cable and discovered that LAN is not working, in fact there's no LAN adapter in device manager. Service center said today that's the same problem - but this time hub is not completely broken, it's just doesnt see LAN adapter and periodically shuts down WiFi. The technician told that this is a frequent problem with Inspirons and Dell knows about it but doesnt recall laptops or extend warranty on this spare part. I asked when second laptop got the wifi issues - it started at the beginning of 2017 and warranty ended in December 2016. Again just 1-2 months.

So, it looks very strange that Dell laptops break right after ending of warranty with same problem, and we can't just change the hub, we need to buy a new board which includes CPU for 600 USD.

I don't know if its the laptop or if it has to do with the router but it seems that Apple laptops always interfere with my wifi connection.

My brothers Mac does it when we both visit home and my girlfriends roommates mac always kicks both of our laptops off the wifi. After a few minutes it will let us connect back up but then dies out again after a few minutes.

I assume it has to do with the laptops because neither my brother or the roommate seem to have the problem and it only happens when they are online.

Anyone Know whats up?

Thanks All!

Here's a thought. I've been searching high and low for an affordable laptop which has

Awesome Graphics card (not sure what - but something that could handle Crysis at high)
15-16" screen with 1920 x 1080 res
4gb or more ddr3 1333mhz ram
core i7-720qm or higher processor
backlit keyboard
HDMI, long battery life, etc etc

So basically everything but at under $2500. I even bought a dell studio xps 1645 with the above specs and the price was real good ($1730 with student discount) but it had lots of problems so i had to return it.

Now that the problem is solved (? maybe?).. dell dont offer that laptop in that configuration, making the laptop around $2400 just due to an increase in RAM (6gb instead of 4gb).

And since I am unsure of the quality with dell or any other brand for that matter, I was wondering if there is any laptop out there that gives alienware m15x performance for a smaller pricetag? (a discount coupon for the above would do! hehe)

If not, what about "overhauling" or "Pimp My Laptop" sorta stuff if you catch my drift... You know customizing the laptop or even building it up from scratch.

I've done some basic upgrades in the past (RAM HDD, bluetooth card etc.) but does anyone have any experience in upgrading graphics cards, screens and CPU's?

Any experience or information about this is very welcome, as finding the right laptop in the right price is sorta like the Holy Grail of laptops, especially in NZ s... Read more

Hello all. I would like some feedback on this.I have seen so many comparisons about a Mac Book Pro and non-Apple laptops. It would seem to me that IF you did configure a Windows based laptop with everything a Mac Book Pro has the Windows based laptop is a little less expensive. My view on this is that with a non-Apple laptop you have greater choice. You don't need to buy a Cadillac when all you need is a Chevrolet.Yes I can spend $3000 on a non-Apple laptop if I need that level of ability or I can spend $700 for a more basic machine. I have the choice. Also the myth that Apple users are some how smarter than Windows users. I think the average Apple user is just as dumb as the average PC user.                       messageHello to all

Just threw this article together, I want all the brain's in this forum to chip in and if there is anything missing from this article (at all!) let me know ASAP, in this thread.

Previously we wrote a long post about Best Laptops for Hackers, which included a run-down on the best laptops for programming and penetration testing (pen-testing). This article turned out to be very popular even though it wasn't exactly intended to be that, now we are proud to finally publish the long-requested article of 'Best Laptops for Video Game System Emulation'.

The idea of this post is to give an accurate summary of which laptops are suited for, or adept at emulating various consoles and their games, and which ones also can easily perform these duties, at the lowest possible cost.

Now obviously, the better hardware you have the better your system will be at emulating other hardware/software. That doesn't necessarily mean a more expensive laptop. Where the demands of hacking and pen-testing demand vital and significant internal storage, the prerequisites for game emulation are generally just a good graphics processor, and good RAM/CPU.

Your laptop should also be in good working order and not muddled with high-risk pirated downloads and large bits of video. To emulate efficiently, you should also have as little processes and programs running in order for the emulator to run smoothly.

These are all common sense tips but...

I have a friend who currently works in the USA as a teacher. She is planning on returning to the UK next year. My friend would like to buy a laptop in the States but wants to be able to use it when she returns to the UK. What advice can you give?

Answer:Laptops For The USA!!

if she gets a multinational brand name laptop, such as compaq, toshiba, and i think dell, they usually have a power supply that can work on both voltages. best check with the supplier to make sure. also, a mulitnational will have an international warranty, so any problems can be solved here in the Uk. she can fill in the warranty card that normally comes with them and get support.

I have 2 laptops, one came with xp home. I have now put xp home on the 2nd laptop using the disc but how do i register the second one as the number has already been used. Is there a way around this without having to buy another xp disc. Thanks

Answer:Two Laptops , One Xp!

No - you can only use the license you have to install XP on one, and only one computer.

You must buy an additional full installation version cd of Windows XP with its unique 25 digit license key to authenticate the installation.

There is no other legal way to do this and any attempt would be considered software piracy.

DO NOT USE THE WINDOWS XP LICENSE KEY FROM YOUR ORIGINAL INSTALLATION OF XP TO TRY TO VALIDATE XP ON THE SECOND COMPUTER! (Be aware that XP will shut down after 30 days of not being validated after installing XP)

If you do try to use the same key code on both, it will still shut down on 30th day and be inoperable after that. It may also cause your first installation to become invalid as well.

Do-it-Yourself Notebooks OCZ Technology

I just heard about this, and that sounded interesting, so I looked on the OCZ site, and wow, they sell barebones. You must buy the CPU, RAM, HDD, and Wireless card separately.

I'd go against the gaming compatibility, but at least they don't have integrated Intel graphic cards.

I am looking at getting a new Laptop for myself and giving my fianc?e (Stephanie) my other Laptop. The Laptop that I am giving her is a Toshiba. The Toshiba is Windows 10 compatible and has been great. It just doesn't have a DVD/RW drive and that's what I need. What manufacturers do y'all recommend? I don't want another Acer. In my opinion, Toshiba, HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Samsung are the best. HP and Dell are at the top of my list. Which manufacturer do y'all recommend? Also, where do y'all normally get your computers at? I live in the United States. Also, I am looking at spending $100 to $200 for one. It doesn't have to be touch screen. Just as long as it has a number keypad and a 15.6" screen or bigger is fine with me.

Answer:Looking at new Laptops

ASUS, refurbished from E-Bay or Amazon, although my daughter's Asus came from the Navy Exchange.

Hey guys I might be getting a laptop soon in July or maybe a bit later.

Budget: Don't know but try to keep it below $1100 AUD (Australian Dollars)
What it will be used for: Gaming and School Work and also looking for something that will last.
I would prefer if it has windows 7 professional as OEM.

Can anyone help me out here?

Also will have this laptop hooked up to my TV so don't worry about screens lol I got that covered.

Answer:Looking for laptops.

What will you be doing in school with it?

I would suggest a Lenovo, the X220 in fact, for its promising long battery life. Dunno how expensive it is down there, though.

90% of recent laptops since 2009 had 7 on it by standard. I'm not to sure about Aussie sites or prices. I'll ask Soul to post in here.

As long as you get an ASUS, perhaps, that has good specs, you aught to get a swell system. As for your gaming, you want a dedicated card.

Question: laptops

Hope I am in the right category-otherwise feel free to move this. I am new to the laptop realm. Could someone answer the following questions:
1) should I be taking the battery out when not in use or plugged in to other power source?
2) is it ok to have it closed (screen or monitor face down)when it is on-like closing it when you are typing and someone nosey walks into the office?
Thanks for your help!(any other tips on laptop use would be appreciated by this novice)

Answer:laptops

Hi there -

This is just from my own experience. Perhaps some other laptops users will have differing opinions.

1. It depends upon the make of your laptop. I know the Compaq laptops I use in my computer lab will charge the battery when the power is on. Once it is fully charged, though, I remove it to store it. Keeping it in a safe place is good for it when it is fully charged.

2. It doesn't hurt the system to close the screen when it is on. (I do it all the time!) The only thing to be careful of is possible damage to the system from repeated opening/closing - sometimes the case can wear and tear.

Hope that helps!

Does anyone know if it is possible to disable the click feature on the laptop mouse alternative. The thing I dislike about these laptop feature is that when I move around the screen I frequently click on something on the screen by accident.
I'd much rather if the only way to left click was with the two standard buttons.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Depending on your touvhpad and software, you must disable a feature called tapping.

You do this from the touchpad preferences in the control panel, usually accessible from the mouse settings.

Question: Laptops

Hi, thinking of buying a laptop, can anyone tell me, will I be able to hook my broadband modem from my pc into laptop? Do I need to buy any extra cables?

To make my own movies, do I need a DVD/CD-RW drive?

And to hook up to the internet on the move, if the laptop has an internal modem, does that work wire free on the move? and if so how? And do you just get a contract with a company for example?

Thanks

Answer:Laptops

Im not to smart on all this but I can tell ya, you can network the two computers together if you want using either a crossover cable if your other PC has two Lan cards or you can buy a router which is the way I do it and it will share your internet connection.

Not to sure about the movies.

As for internet on the move, do you mean around the house or going other places? If you mean around the house, then you will need a wireless router and a wireless lan card for your laptop unless the laptop already comes with it.

Ok I am new here but not really new to IT. I did tech support from Windows 95 to Windows XP. Assume though that I am intermediate or if you prefer just a little stupid I used to spend hours and hours in the middle of the night building and rebuilding desktops for my Family and myself. Lots of time on forums and such to figure issues out. Worked for an IT company and I am now in a different world (not IT) and Windows 7/8 have become a little over whelming not to mention the new hard ware that exists. I have four laptops that I am looking at throwing out but before I do I was hoping to Mash them into one good one first.

Here is what I have:
1) HP G60 Notebook, ACPI x64-based PC, AMD Athlon X2 QL-64 2.10GHz Dual Core, Vista, NVIDIA GeForce 8200M G, DVD/CD, 4 gigs ram, Primary - actually ok laptop except a screw fell out a year ago and now the screen is hanging by the wires only. I was quoted $600 to get it fixed. Hence why I am looking for help to see if I can mash 4 laptops together.

2) Compaq Presario V6000 V6210CA, Vista, AMD Turion64. No hard drive but holds power ok and from what I remember worked but had the drive removed to make an external drive for another PC (Hated Vista).

3) HP Compaq nc8000 ntel Pentium M, XP. No Hard drive, very old but solid state, been dropped a few times and still worked. Pulled the drive to make a back up drive because forgot the password and by this time I was into PC number 3.

4) HP G8-408CA, Windows 7, Vision AMD sorry but that... Read more

Question: laptops

OK, I've been outa the loop for a while, so how gentle do I have to be with this new toshiba satellite when transporting it on a motorcycle, can I leave it in standby or should I shut it down completely? Are the newer hard drives less fragile than they used to be? Any advice would be great, thanks

Answer:laptops

My understanding of standby mode is the hard disk and display are turned off, and the CPU is throttled down to its lowest-power state. However, memory is kept active, which requires battery power, but at a very slow rate. (taken from a website). So i guess you don't need to worry about the hard drive because it's powered off.

Start -> Right click "Computer" -> Manage... -> On the left panel go to Disk management -> on the right panel after it loads, find your HDD in the list on the bottom and it should say what it's size is under the "Disk 0" label.

It's not 2 processors, only 1 physical processors. It has 2 physical cores, however. No, multi-core doesn't work by just adding up the frequency of the cores.

Well last year I bought a new Laptop but it came with onboard graphics, just recently my brother's motherboard failed and HP refused to repair so it's just laying around gathering dust. His laptop has a nVidia GeForce card and it's sad watching gather dust and me not be able to play real games.

So I wanted to ask if I can take out his graphics card and put it on mine it would really help me, both laptops are out of warranty.

My specs are:
Acer Extensa 5630z
Intel Pentium Dual 2.0ghz CPU
Intel GL40 chipset
3gb RAM
Onboard Mobile Intel 4 Series Express graphics with 1.2gb shared RAM
Using Windows 7 and XP in different partitions

I don't remember most of my bros laptop specs since its been dead for a while =/

Thanks for any advice.

If both are onboard graphics cards (which 95% of laptops are) then you will not be able to accomplish this.

I'm really sorry if this is kind of a n00b question, but why do some laptops come with na integrated intel GPU and an optional Nvidia Geforce?

I'm looking for a good performance laptop, to work with Vegas Pro and other heavy apps, and I found this sweet machine...expensive, but still sweet xD
But what really grinds my gears is the Intel + Nvidia combination. Why do some laptops come with two GPU's? Would such a combination result in combatility issues? Is it to choose which one to use, or does it use both for a more powerful result?

I'd appreciate some info on this, can't seem to find it online.

Thank you for your time.

Answer:Why do some laptops have 2 GPU's?

because the integrated GPU isn't good enough for some games or high end apps and some people prefer dedicated graphics and not integrated so they offer NVidia GPU as an optional extra. also the intel GPU is integrated into motherboard, NVidia one isn't

you will only use one GPU though.

I have used one, but in the end I thought the temps issue was too much to carry on, although you can dial down the CPU usage in [email protected] and not put a strain on the laptop, but the WU will take obviously longer.

If its gathering dust and not being used, its worth a go at using it, but monitor it over a few days.

Question: RYO Laptops

It is possible for one to build his or her own desktop PC. All the cases and components are readily available.

But what of a laptop? Are there kits, motherboards, components, etc., especially suitable for building one's own laptop from scratch?

R. J. Emery

Answer:RYO Laptops

Not that I have ever seen, and I do a lot of looking for components and such. Problem with laptops is the small space, everything has to fit snug. Don't have much choice on component size.

Hi, I'm a student and I need a new laptop.

This is my understanding of laptops at the moment:

Core 2 Duo Processors = better.
2ghz and above pocessors = fast.
2gb minimum RAM for Vista.
3gb RAM- is this good?
4gb RAM-is this excellent?

250gb Hard-Drive= good.

I basically want a laptop that runs extremely quickly, good hard-drive space, can multitask at high speeds, and can cope with lots of music. (Although I'm looking for good speakers), and a good screen for DVD watching.

Just as an example of a laptop I was interested in, could someone tell me if this is good or not: Please help and reccomment other laptops with good specs!

Answer:Best Laptops for £500(ish) and under?HELP

You really don't need 4GB RAM, I have 3GB in my high-end dv9700t laptop and it runs great. Save on the RAM (get 2-3GB) and get a better CPU or graphics chip (The Intel ones are HORRIBLE, if at all possible at least get something nVidia or ATi). You can save money on HP computers by ditching the Norton subscription, MS Office package, and other unimportant software that companies pay HP to try to make you buy at a high price. You can use free virus scanners like AVG and free software like OpenOffice instead (also schools often have good discounts on MS Office so you can save buy buying at school). The T5870 is OK, but getting a T7xxx or higher would be better (I have a T9300, man it's fast!). As for speakers, good luck. I've never seen a laptop with "good" speakers. The tiny little speakers in laptops are loud, but lack bass and treble, blaring midrange distorted music if you crank it up. However, plug in a decent set of headphones on the go or plug into a 2.1 speaker setup at your desk and music will sound great.

Other than that, it's a great choice. I have an HP (dv9700t 17" model) and it's awesome, I've always used HP's and they're pretty good PC's. HP's have nice screens too, if you can, get the BrightView one (it's glossy and has great color), it will really make DVD watching a lot better.

Question: Old Laptops

I've recently been on the lookout for old laptops, and would appreciate some advice.I would like to surprise my brother in law with his own machine. He's finding the trek to the library too much these days, It would need to be Win XP capable, for him to surf the net and keep in touch with family and friends. The other machine would be for me to indulge my own wish to try out Ubuntu Linux without upsetting my main PC.I've been offered three old machines, all Pentium P3's, with between 64 and 128MB RAM.One is said to be working and has an old battery which I understand holds "some" charge, but none come with a power adaptor which I would need to buy (or otherwise obtain!).They have been offered to me at £30.Whilst this is not much money, I have a miniscule budget for these projects, and could ill afford to squander it!I had hoped to get something a little more recent, especially for my brother in law but cannot afford "commercial" prices.Your advice please!

Question: laptops

Hi - I've decided to buy a laptop but have been advised it may be better to wait until Windows 7, due out this year sometime. Is this correct? Also, as I don't do gaming and just want a very reliable laptop with a good display and battery power, is there anywhere I can look to check over various brands?

Answer:laptops

As far as I know you will get a free upgrade to Windows 7 if you buy a new computer with Vista on it.Hope I have that right.Remember reading it somewhere.

Hi there, im going to New York in October (at least you'll have a rest from me then) and i was wondering what your advice would be regarding buying a laptop there instead of over here? My main choice at the moment is the Samsung R720, does anyone know if there is likely to be better spec laptops in N.Y than over here?Id be very interested in your thoughts on this!

Answer:Going to US in Oct-any better laptops there?

Depends very much on the exchange rate when you go out there. Because of the value you should also declare it on your way back through customs. That will probably hurt!! I doubt whether the spec of laptops will be any better that UK ones, they tend to get launched almost simultaneously nowadays. I think you will be better off shopping around for the best deal over here. It will certainly lessen any problems if you have to claim under warranty. You will also get a keyboard layout that matches the rest of your computers, and not a US layout.

I haven't found the whole 3-D experience so far very good --especially as you have to wear those uncomfortable glasses but a colleague of mine wants a 3-D laptop for Xmas.

Any such animal around and if so are they any good -- before you suggest get a 3-D monitor this laptop would be used while travelling so the person wants to watch 3-D movies / content on the road.

Answer:3-D Laptops anyone

Didn't even know that there were 3D laptops. I've not been noticing much hype lately around 3D where I am. It seemed to be gaining steam a while back, but i think it lost that momentum. I could be wrong though. I cannot see the 3D effects, had a wandering eye as a kid, so I'll be honest and say that I don't follow the technology at all.

It's happened with 2 different laptops and 4 hard drives! Ouch! What the hell am I doing wrong? Do I have the Sidam touch or what?

The first one I did is the computer I'm writing this on, no problems (so far).

Any ideas what's happening? All the HDs have been Western Digital, but I just can't believe it's a hardware problem.

Question: Laptops...

Hi there,

Firstly - I apologise for posting in this forum, because I am not too sure which of the other forums to post in...

Well, here is my question...
How well do laptops (performance) compare to Desktop PCs.
I have a 3.01 Ghz HT Advent computer at home. With 512MB RAM and an 80GB HDD with a 200GB External HDD. It has a 19" monitor...

THe reason I have stated these specs is because I am looking to buy a laptop (with wireless built in) so I can connect to my network. At the moment the computer isn't really mine and I have a lot of work etc to be doing, so i am looking to buy one of my own.

However, I have been looking at laptop prices etc - And to be honest, I think I would rather spend the money on another desktop as the SPECs do not seem too good at all.

I have been looking through a dell catalogue and have come across the following:
Dell Latitude D810 for ?899: (Without VAT).
Intel Pentium M Processor 760
2.0 Ghz, 2MB L2 Cache, 533 MHz FSB
XP Pro
100GB HDD
15.4" Widescreen
64MB Graphics Card
Wireless :AM 802.11b/g

How will I find this compared to my home computer?

Answer:Laptops...

A laptopm with a centrino and turion have less processor power than those you find in you desktop. But you can get a laptop with a pentium 4 or amd 64 but you will not have as good battery life.

Hi, My eyes are not your eyes and I've got a Sony Vaio in front of me (please note: Sony has dozens of laptops called Vaio), I don't think it's great for my eyes. Back to your question: Basically you can adjust brightless and contrast on nearly all laptop computers therefore I think you need high resolution and no glare screen. LCD replacement screen goes for a little over 100. Should I just throw this thing out? I don't know if anyone would even want to buy this thing for $20 bucks considering its an older laptop.

Laptop A: Processor 4th Generation Intel Core i7-4510U Processor (2.00GHz 1600MHz 4MB) and Memory 4.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz.

Laptop B: Processor 4th Generation Intel Core i5-4210U Processor (1.70GHz 1600MHz 3MB) and Memory 8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz.

All other specs are the same, including both laptops have Hardrive Hybrid 500GB 5400 RPM + 8GB SSHD.

Both of these laptops are Lenovo. My current laptop, which is about to die, is also a Lenovo, and it has served me well so I don't have a problem getting another Lenovo. However, to be honest, I don't know that much about laptops, so if anyone would like to recommend another brand and model, I'm happy to listen. But, budget matters: these two laptops are each around $600, and I don't want to pay anymore than that. I do not use my laptop for gaming or video editing. For my needs, the above specs are probably sufficient.

The two laptops are both 512mb with the dell having a 40gb hd and the hp having a 60gb hd.

Which one is better/faster?

The centrino setup will be better.
Centrino does not describe the processor, it describes the wireless/processor setup. The centrino has a pentium m in it. The Pentium M is faster than the Celeron M.

Question: Laptops

Wanting to get a laptop but am as always confused. It seems if you get a laptop for the most part you get to pick between celerons 1.3 or 1.5 most are like that not all. Some appear to have desktop chips but it seems to me they would get really hot. The pentium M's are 1. something also.
My question, are laptops that much slower then desktops or are say the 1.5's really faster then then number makes them sound.

I should add that I am looking for a cheap laptop.

Answer:Laptops

No matter how companies design computers, change the configuration of the cpu's and mobo's they are fighting a losing battle with heat the faster cpu runs the more juice you have to push, which inturn gives off more heat"as you know."The most inefficient way of using electricity is to create heat,so most laptops are designed to run cool so the battery lasts longer, also the entire pc has to squashed into a little flat package leaving less room for airflow,so again they have to make them cooler, nearly every part is made a little bit slower making them slower than thier desktop brothers.

I noticed a good illustration of this is in the psu,my brother has a 2.8p4 desktop with a 400 watt psu,I used to have a compaq presario 2500 laptop p42.8 with a charger that could run the comp without a battery rated at max 90watts,there's simply no way you could run the desktop comp with that charger because its alot more powerfull, and his desktop comp was alot faster in everything.

I'v recently seen reviews of the new alienware laptops "I know your looking for a cheap laptop".

but it has benchmarks comparing them to desktops, and although identical to desktops on paper are no where near in performance I'll try and dig them up.

Hello:

I hope this is the right place to post this, as there doesn't seem to be a seperate forum for purchasing new computers...

Anyway, I need a laptop for school next year and definitely need a PC. I've looked at HP's and Dell's, but HP's have odd case designs and are expensive, and the Dell's are too expensive overall. My budget is $700, but I would REALLY REALLY like to stay at $600.

I need recommendations because I am new to purchasing a laptop. I've checked with the school and all that they require is a 15" or larger screen, Windows Vista Home Premium, and a 100+ GB hard drive. Since this computer would be used only for school (researching on the Internet, word processing, Power Point documents, etc.) I am assuming that I don't need something too high-tech.

Today I saw a Best Buy ad for a Compaq A916NR laptop, with everything I need. Here is a link: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...06368&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1199496037736

So, I guess my question is; do you think this laptop would fulfill my needs? I am REALLY interested in this laptop because it is exactly what I want and can afford.

Opinions would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Question: Possible laptops?

I am looking to buy a laptop to use mostly for school. I walked in to Future Shop today (Best Buy's sister store that it owns up here in Canada) and headed over to the laptop section with my list in hand.

The commissioned sales rep tried to talk me into getting one of two laptops, and since they were on my list of possible choices, I heard what he had to say.

Initially, I was shooting for something mid-range... 4 GB RAM and a Core 2 Duo processor as a good investment, a decent hard drive (250-320 GB), fairly light weight, and I was prepared to settle for integrated graphics since I wasn't really planning on using the machine for much else besides school work.

But then he pointed out two laptops that are $900 CDN each, which is do-able as the other ones I was looking at were around the same price or a bit less for the same features.

Hi everyone,I want to know whether all laptops use the same kind of Hard Disks? I am using a Dell Latitude D410 which is 12'' wide. I want to upgrade to a huge HDD. Would my machine use the same HD that a 17'' wide laptop may use? Thanks.

Answer:Are all laptops HDD the same?

Essentially the only commonality that can be stated as universal is the physical size of the HDD which is 2.5 inches versus 3.5 inches for desktops. Depending on the vintage of the computer (both laptops and desktops) will use different types of HDD such as ide or sata. As well again depending on age of the computer there can be a limitation as to the size (amount of available memory) that a computer will recognize as available regardless of how much the actual HDD has. This is not as much a factor with today's current computers. In the sense of your question where my interpretation of "huge " as you imply is amount of memory on the HDD. In which case the is really not a valid comparison as some desktops may have less than some laptops and vice-versa . In your specif example where the different parameter is the screen size that could be the same as between desktops and laptops. In an area of dimension which i am not knowledgeable enough to be certain is that perhaps as the memory amounts get toward the upper end of the possibilities perhaps the drive may get thicker and therefore might pose a problem re available space in your case.Other members may wish to comment for you on that.truenorth

Question: Laptops

My mother who is a compute novice and usually comes to me for help has just purchased a new laptop - has never had one before - and asked me the question I get different answers to all the time.  When she is finished for the day, should she shut down and close it up or is it better to leave it on til the next day and should she close it up  or leave it open?  And if it's going to be a few days until she gets back on what's the best advice for leaving it inactive?Thank you

Answer:Laptops

Close it up and shutdown...2 reasons: saves the screen from dust/debrisEliminates a laptops worst enemy...Heat.Just using the normal Windows shutdown process will be fine...

Question: Using Laptops

I still haven't purchased a PC. I have no room in my cramped apartment for a PC so I'd like to get a laptop. The problem is that I have difficulty using the laptops' touchpad. I was told that all laptops can be connected to a regular keyboard and mouse. Is this true? Maybe it's only true for certain brands. If true, where would I connect the keyboard and mouse into the laptop? I've surfed the internet for years but have no knowledge about hooking-up a home PC. Do laptops all come with detailed instructions about how to hook-up. I know I have to get a router as I have no WiFi in my area.

Answer:Using Laptops

As far as I know, every laptop can be used with a mouse. You can plug it in just like a USB.Why would you want to get a keyboard? it's build in in every laptop.

Question: How many laptops?

I have a classroom with a Buffalo router sending the school system including broadband to my teacher's computer. I am considering buyinga laptop trolley and 16 laptops. Will the router run all the machines or will I have to add anything else?

Answer:How many laptops?

I have a linksys router and I can't find the manual at the moment but I am sure when I read how many wireless devices it can run simultaineously that it was well in excess of 16 so you should not have a problem, I can't see there being that much of difference between brands

Hi, my name is IAPD3000. First timer
Let just say that someone is giving away their old laptop computers for free and they did not erase or delete their user accounts. What should I do?
I just got two Dell laptops as a yard sale or they giving it away. He told me that I need a charger cord for both of them.
One of them is Dell Inspiron 1010 and it works, but he did not erase his account. I don't know this person and I don't want to ask him to solve it. Is there another way to fix this?
