Slow internet, poor keyboard response and slow scrolling problems

Question: Slow internet, poor keyboard response and slow scrolling problems

Hello Techspot!!!!

I have had my laptop for nearly 3 years but I wouldn't deem it to be a poor performance laptop. Recently I have been getting slow internet, poor keyboard response and slow scrolling, and it is very frustrating!!! I share the BT 3 homehub with good connection speed which was checked and found fine! My housemates laptop has started having the same problem as mine and I really want to fix this issue. The internet, keyboard and scrolling speeds vary everyday but overall are slow performers. I have looked through some of the threads and have seen people posting long threads of code etc :/ Is there anyone out there who has the time and patience to help me fix this problem? It would be most appreciated!!!

Many Thanks

Dan

Preferred Solution: Slow internet, poor keyboard response and slow scrolling problems

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Concurrent wil all this, something is resetting my trackpad settings back to default on every reboot. Solved this last summer by removing something from Logitech, but the problem is back now. Weird.

Great that I found this site!

Since two days ago I have had a strange trouble with IE 6.0: Entering data to form fields (including this message box) and scrolling pages up/down is extremely slow. Characters show approx. 2 - 5 seconds after when you have actually pressed the keys. Scrolling webpages especially ones having pictures (such as Ebay search results) is paintaking.

Typing web address on top of the screen and the connection work just fine. I have Windows ME and AntiVir 9 + Zonealarm running. I run IE's internal "repair process" but did not help here at all.

Please let me know what should I do to get rid of this trouble.

Thanks all, in advance.

Hello friends. I have been experiencing a delayed response when typing in forms in IE 6, where the characters appear several seconds after the keys are struck. The scroll bar has also been getting out of whack by not moving when clicking on the arrow. This happens on certain sites, i.e. ebay, yahoo, etc. These problems may seem insignificant, but when experienced first hand over the course of several months, an aneurysm begins to form in the frontal lobe.

As recommended on other site forums, I have tried clearing the autocomplete and forms and deleting the pstore key in the registry as suggested by Microsoft Knowledge Base. I have also scanned the disk, defraged, turned off the virus scan, cleared my cache and cookies. I have run spyware killers to no avail. I have reset the security settings in the IE options until my fingers were about to fall off and turned on/off smooth scrolling until I entered some sort of delusional state of mental handicap . In short, these previous suggestions have been useless.

After searching this site, I have seen my problem a few times on this forum. This problem seems to be fixed after some cool dude views the log file from HijackThis and makes an educated suggestion.

Well, peep this: below is my log file from HijackThis.
Please help. I am about to throw a brick through the monitor.

Hello,

The keyboard response time has gotten very slow when typing inside of Internet Explorer. I am using Vista. Below is my Hijack This logfile. I'd be very appreciative if someone could have a look at it, because having to type like a 6 year old is driving us nuts.

Does the problem only occur when using the PCA site? If yes, then try running Safe Mode to see if one of your add-ons is causing the problem.

On my Dell Optiplex 745 I am having similar problem (http://forums.techguy.org/malware-r...s/716287-slow-performance-quad-core-xeon.html).
The computer stops responding to keyboard or mouse inputs for few milliseconds after every few seconds. Its not that the response is slow, wherein I expect whatever I type to appear after the momentory system hang. It actually either eats up couple of letters that I typed and takes double input for some other letters. I suspect it is because of patchlink update, but even after killing tth pddm.exe process from the task manager or machine restart I aam having same behaviour. It becomes exttremely difficult to type more than 2 sentences. It typically happens in the afternoon.
Even the mouse response is veery poor as the mouse moves in jerks and doees''t select the actual item I wish to select.
The computer is in company intranet with Symantec anti-virus corporate edition with very regular updates. So II dont suspect any virus attack.

This is annoying me to no end.

I've gone ahead and leveraged the nice feature of keyboard shortcuts, so I can quickly access commonly used applications without having to "hunt and peck" with the mouse. I've got about 6 different applications linked with shortcuts.

However, I find that often when I invoke a shortcut, the response by Windows is VERY slow. First, the task bar becomes "busy" and unresponsive. Second, the application takes a relatively long time to launch. If I click on a desktop shortcut for the application, it launches within a second or two at the most.

Why this strange difference in launch time?

I have my network connection icons present in the system tray. Low and behold, I see them become very active when invoking my shortcuts. Is XP sending some "user" information to Microsoft? Is XP scanning the Internet for upgrades as a byproduct of a shortcut invocation?

I am wondering if there are steps I can take to reduce the shortcut response time. I usually don't have a "Start in" folder specified. Should I define one? Also, I define shortcuts on quick launch shortcuts located on the "All Programs" menu (and subgroups where appropriate). Is it better to have the keyboard shortcut defined on a quick launch shortcut in a specific location, like the desktop?

UPDATE: Bah! I went ahead and tried my suggestions. I put a quick launch shortcut on my desktop, specified a "start in" ... Read more

After an automatic windows update, my T41 (2379 DKU) is operating extremely slow.  It boots fine, but it is taking several minutes to respond to a keystroke.  The cursor moves around the screen correctly, everything else is extremely slow.  CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up task manager takes several minutes to open. Any suggestions would be appreciated. If I start the system in safe mode, everything seems to operate normaly.  System is not usable in normal windows XP start up -- response to open a program is to slow and eventually system hangs.  It seems that a right click will hang the system.

the slow response is typically due to high CPU usage or RAM usage, what did you update recently???

Hi, I recently purchased a SL510 laptop. When I type on the keyboard, the response is very slow. When I type fast, it sometimes misses the letters between words. For example, when I type google, it types "googe". This is really annoying. I tried chaning the keyboard settings to and changed the Repeat Delay and Repeat Rate to "Fast". But it did not help. Can someone please let me know if this is keyboard problem or Windows 7 Professional problem? Regards,Satish.

Answer:Satellite L850-1LK - keyboard response is very slow

I presume you have brand new notebook. At the beginning notebook is very ?busy? with loading many background applications and services. Windows update is set to automatic and it search permanent for new updates and install them in the background.

I?m pretty sure that HDD is pretty busy when you try to write something.

What you must do is preinstalled OS optimization. With other words change settings for Windows update and stop start-up for some useless but preinstalled applications and additional software.

Please check it a bit and post some feedback.

The keyboard on my Satellite C660-108 is very slow in response. Some characters are not displayed at all, some only after a short delay. This is very inconvenient when typing text and passwords (!) because I have to double check everything I type (and 1 out of 3 words has spelling errors, due to the keyboard issue)

Is there a way I can troubleshoot what's wrong?

Thanks,

Herbert

Hi buddy,

As you can read in many other threads you have to update the BIOS to get rid of this problem.

Toshiba has already released an article about what you should do:

Recently I've been facing a peculiar problem. Whenever I restart my laptop, the keyboard response gets very slow. If I turn off the laptop and turn it on after 15 minutes or so, everything gets back to normal. Mine is an Acer Aspire R3-471TG, Windows 8.1 laptop. I just don't get it. Can anyone help me?

Hi, I'm new on the forum, I've been searching through the various topics and can't seem to find anyone having the same problem as I am, so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

The Problem:- My keyboard response slows down after I have been using my machine for a couple of hours. It gets so bad that typing anything over 8 characters long causes the comp to loose characters and then beep. Even after a restart the problem seem to there unless the machine is off for a long period of time, which seems a little odd! I have tried 2 different types of keyboard and both suffer from the problem.

I have re-installed Win XP recently so there isn't a lot of software on the machine at the moment and I still experience the problem.

The machine has the following specs:
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
AMD Barton XP2500+ (Bios settings FSB 166MHz Multiplyer 11.5)
1GB TwinMOS DDR PC3200
Radeon 9200 SE 64MB
Samsung SP1614N 160GB
Win XP Pro SP2 Installed
Mozilla Firefox

Hey all, I'm new so this is my first question. It's quite important actually because I like to play keyboard required games like Stepmania and Space Cadet Pinball (freeware download). Obviously I'm using Vista. I saw on a website that it's the registry's problem that it sometimes stops for about half a second then bursts out with loads of typing about a second later.

Is this peice of registry correct?

I recently messed it up, I was playing a game and I pressed shift for 8 sec. and ever since then the keyboard response has been slow. It takes 2-3 seconds for it to work and you have to wait for a tic sound and the letters won't repeat. I already tried unplugging it.

Hi,
I just got a new toshiba satellite C55-A5302 laptop and I immediately encountered a problem. The keyboard was not responding but I noticed that if I held down the key long enough then it owuld respond. I was wondering if this was a problem with the drives or if it was a factory defect or if there was any easy fix for it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

The Notebook mentioned in the title has a very annoying problem. After boot it works fine. After a while it suddenly starts delaying the typing. Words will appear a second later after you "hacked" them into the keyboard.
So, I'm already trying to figure out the problem:

- it's not a problem occuring in only one app e.g. Word 2010. When it starts you will have it everywhere, even in notepad or in the browser address field.

- killing the explorer.exe and starting the process again makes the problem disappear again!

- The notebook was usually on batteries and in a powersaving mode called OFFICE, when it happened. I don't have enough data yet to say it wouldn't happen in ECO OFF mode either. Also I saw there were a bunch of new updates for windows 7 for the Intel HD 3000 graphics, yesterday. I'm a little afraid that it's due to powersaving. In OFFICE mode it gives maximum powersaving to the graphics.

I'd like to know what you guys think. I didn't try a bios update yet. But I could do this as one of the steps to narrow down the problem. What would be the most professional way to narrow the problem down? Do I have to study system or application logs right when the problem occurs?

Ah, maybe it's helpful to mention that the cursor/touchpad response and system performance stays fine, while the keyboard lags.

Thx for help,
Andreas

I wish I saw this thread before I did a factory restore. Ohh well, atleast its somewhat comforting to know I'm not the only one having this issue. I initially blamed the problem on my Razer Orochi 2013, but turns out that wasn't the issue.

And I agree a proper fix is needed, wether is be some kind of BIOS or Driver update, but not some 3rd Party work around. For a $1,200+ laptop, this shouldn't be something that just get's swept under the carpet with a "temporary fix".

Please keep us up to date on the status of this issue Lenovo.

Answer:Re: Y50 Windows 8 : Keyboard response too slow after coming back from hibernation

There is a topic on lenovo forum from someone about this problem with Windows 7. But this time I experienced it with windows 8.1 on a brand new machine .

Simply put, In keyboard properties , the Repeat delay is default at maximum (eg, holding down a keyboard button and how fast it generates the key strokes). When the system is put in hiberanation, then turned on again to come back, the Repeat delay some how gets decreased to about 2/3 of what it originally is.

I verified this. So if anyone can replicate please reply. Very easy test.

My Machine : Y50 , windows 8.1 64 bit (all windows update up to date). Lenovo updates up to date.
Thanks!

On my Sat P100 PSPA6A, around 50% of the time, the keyboard and touchpad do not respond properly. By this I mean:
- mouse tracks jerkily and slowly across screen
- keystrokes lost

Both these symptoms occur at once - it's never one or the other. Sometimes a restart fixes it, sometimes it doesn't. It occurs after a fresh Windows install and with all Toshiba drivers as-new so it's not software or a virus. It's not related to overheating, as it can occur from startup after an overnight power-off. It's even occurred on two machines of this spec (one got RTMd and replaced under warranty) so it's not just some weird quirk on this one and only machine that I have.

I'm at my wit's end with this. If it wasn't for this intermittant fault, I'd be very happy with this, but I'm on the verge of throwing it off a cliff. (Well, not really, but trading it in anyway.)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer:Satellite P100 (PSPA6A) touchpad and keyboard slow/no response

Have you tried to update BIOS to latest version?
If I am remembering well such issues are fixed with BIOS updates.

One more thing: if this issue is still there, even after clean OS installation, it can also be hardware related issue. You know, it is not easy to give exact solution to this. Maybe you should contact nearest authorized service provider and let them check keyboard and touchpad using their diagnostic tools.

I've got the same issue as outlined in this thread for a Y50 - there seems to be a BIOS update to solve it, but what about TP Yoga 15?

I recently cleaned up my "Start Up" items (this may or may not be associated with the problem I am having - may be coincidental). No viruses, Firewall at Medium security, SpySweeper in operation. 512MB RAM. XP Pro. Working on Cable Modem.

Pages are either VERY slow to load, or will not load at all. Often I must Refresh to get a desired page to show up at all. Many pages will not load at all. "We're sorry but the internet contant you selected is not currently available" message is common.

AOL loads, however slowly. IE is also slow loading the "home page". Going from either home p[age to through a link is a tedious process (including even bringing this form up).

Any ideas as to what the issue might be?

Frank

Answer:Slow Internet Response

First, have you tried powercycling your equipment (like your modem and your router)? Basically you would want to turn both off (if you have a router) and then turn back on your modem first (allowing it to remain on for about a minute) and then turning power back on to the router. Many times speed issues can be correctly by this simple process.

Also, if you have only been using IE then you might want to try clearing cookies/cache/etc if you haven't already. Go to your Tools menu at the top of your screen and go to Internet Options. Depending on the version of IE you have you could see different things like the option to "Delete All" or you might see separate buttons for "Delete Cookies" and "Delete Files". Either way it is a good idea to clear both of these up.

You could try downloading a different internet browser like Mozilla Firefox from getfirefox.com just to see if it's something with the program or not also.

Also, I would run some speed tests to see the speeds you are getting. Especially it might be a good idea to run a speed test while your firewall is on and to run one after you have disabled your firewall. Speed tests are available at:
speedtest.net
speakeasy.net/speedtest

My 3 month old s415 touch repeatedly freezes up. The keyboard response time is extremely slow. I have already done a onekey recovery when it was stuck in a repair drive c: boot up loop and another time after a windows update when it was stuck in a loop for days with a message about Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. I need technical support but there doesn't seem to be any available for ideapad s series! I have spent the last couple hours just trying to enter my password to sign in. I was able to successfully enter the password eventually, but never got to my start screen and am now just looking at a black screen.

I have an 8 year old laptop with an inter celeron chip 1.6 ghtz, 1 gb of RAM. I am currently running IE9 with Vista service pack 2 installed. Internet page loading is tardy to say the least. I also have a works laptop, again quite old, with an intel core 2 duo (1.66 ghtz)with 2 gb of RAM and this runs fine using the same BT wireless hub.
Is my 8 year old laptop just too slow?, CPU usage goes up too 100% when accessing pages but goes down to 2 - 5 % once in idle mode.I can't see anything in Task Manager that might be slowing things up
I have Microsoft Security essentials installed dual core
Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

Answer:vista IE9 and slow internet response

Check task manager again and see how much memory is used with the browser you're using. 1GB ram is a bit low for Vista.

You could test your phone line. Grab a phone and plug it into the phone jack you use for your DSL modem. Press any number to get rid of the beeeeeep so all you should hear is silence. If there are any sounds coming down the line other than almost perfect silence then you should have your line checked out.

My internet access (both Firefox & IE) suddenly got very slow on my Win7 computer. I held out for a couple of days hoping it was temporary. I thought it might be an msn problem because I 1st noticed it in hotmail & about the same time my Windows phone failed numerous times to download an app. I seem to remember once accessing an site that had a list of current/active msn problems; sometimes only in certain areas. Or was that Verizon?

Today I called Verizon & spent 1 1/2 hours with a tech who seemed to know even less than me (if that's possible). I became afraid that following her directions would make things even worse, so I discontinued the conversation.

Accessing hotmail.com just now gave . . .

I'm sorry, I don't know the proper protocol. I have a topic posted in the forum "Internet Response Time is Very slow", and I was advised to follow the "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log." As instructed, I have performed the following steps (numbers correspond to the Preparation Guide)3. I ran a disk cleanup. Webclient/Publisher Temp files will not clear, but the others have been cleared.4. Ad-Aware and Spybot. Ad-aware just had a couple of cookies and a couple of MRUs. Spybot said "no threats". 5. I didn't run Housecall as I didn't want to install Java. Panda: I guess I can't figure out how to run it. This is the third time I've tried, and although Task Manager applications says it's running, Processes shows system idle at 99 or so. It runs for a couple of hours but does nothing. BitDefender ran and showed no problems. I ran Kaspersky, and it shows no problems.6. McAfee Stinger detected 2 files: C/Download free keylogger described as Adware-Url.gen. I don't know what those are or if they deleted them. The instructions say put a check in the box fy "Auto Clean". but I couldn't find such a box. I looked for C/Download on my computer system and could find no such creature.7. I did not install a firewall other than Microsoft yet, as when tried it I had all sorts of problems. Hello, My computer has recently all of a sudden scrolling has slowed to almost a crawl while in any internet browser. I have Internet Explorer and Firefox and they are both the same. Every other program on my computer works just fine. All programs load fast, and work just fine also. The internet speed is also very fast as usual. The web pages load the same as usual. The problem is that while scrolling on any internet page, even ones that are already loaded, it crawls very slowly. It also looks like a wave pattern somewhat. I know that I may be infected with something, however, I can not find it. I have McAfee internet security installed, and it does not find anything. I have also tried adaware, and it is still doing it. Please let me know if there is something more I can do. Thanks! hello..i am sharing broadband and it does seem slow when 2 PC's are online together. Is it because the FIREWALL on the router is checking each data packet for feasibility? If i switch the firwall off would i acheieve much faster response times? i have a Netgear DG834 ADSL FIRWWALL ROUTER MODEM...thanks for any advice!IQ

Answer:Do firewalls slow down response times to Internet?

If you have a software firewall, an easy way to find out is to disable it.If it is a hardware firewall, it may not be so easy.

Hi All

I'm having a bit of an issue with the computer. When browsing things just aren't very responsive and it takes time for click to take effect if you understand. In addition to this in general the computer seems a bit sluggish to respond even when just using MS word or excel.

I have seen people advised to download and run hijack this which I have done but for some reason it won't save the log file.

any suggestions?

OK. Here at work, we just received our enterprise agreement for Windows XP and Office 2007 (yea, a little late on XP, but hey we got it). All three of us in our department installed it and I seem to be the only one who is having problems with it.

Of the 3 PC's being used, 2 of them have the same exact configuration:

Dell GX620
P4 3.4GHZ HT
4GB (3.5gb registered due to Windows XP Pro 32bit)
80GB HD
Radeon X600 with dual 19" LCD DVI - Dell
Windows XP Professional SP2 with ALL updates

Now, my computer is one of these. My other colleague has the same config and his is working fine. Here is my problem:

When I open Outlook 2007, I get HORRIDLY slow response. Sometimes it puts Outlook into the "Not Responding" mode but will come out of it after a few minutes. This happens after the following:

* Switching from folder to folder
* Switching from email to email in the same folder
* When a new email comes in

Now, I know that switching from folder to folder can cause delays due to folders being large, but I keep my whole mailbox clean, no more than a few hundered emails in each folder.

I turned of the reading pane because I thought that this was causing the problem, but it is not. Can anyone help me out here and restore my performance as the same as it was in 2003. Thanks again!

Windows XP has slowed significantly recently and Internet Explorer has slowed to a frustrating point and sticks and freezes. I was told on here to try ipconfig/flushdns which worked and I reported back as so. But after a week or so, it was back the same. Firebox was midly better but I prefer IE so this was the lesser of 2 evils.
I have emptied the browsing history, checked the boot-up items and emptied the recycled folder. I then emptied what was in the %temp% folder, cleared prefetch files and cleared anything left found by disc clean-up. I then ran check disc which showed up as fine.
This was done for both my "side" of the PC and my wife's and no spyware or Virus were found. The hard drive is 2 years old and is still showing a lovely blue bar and states that it doesn't require any defragging despite never having been done!!!!
My questions are:
1 Should I defrag anyway despite what the utility says?
2 Have I cleared everything or missed anything? It does make a big difference to the speed but it only lasts a week or so.
3 Is the PC slowing the internet or is a separate thing????
Internet explorer seems to be hanging on uploading ads or the like. Things like http://adserver.adtech.de/............ seem to take AGES to download and simple things like buttons can freeze it. It also pushes the CPU to 70-100% trying to do so making even just loading text from a message board a major headache.
Anyone have any tips or suggestions?

Answer:How to deal with a slow PC and very poor Internet

1. Software
a) Clear out all temporary files and folders -- use CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
b) Scan for malware spyware and viruses --Free Anti Spyware :-
Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Superantispyware http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html
Free Antivirus software
MicroSoft Security Essentials http://www.microsoft.com/security/products/mse.aspx
Avast http://www.avast.com/en-gb/free-antivirus-download
c) Clean the registry -- Use the tool in Crap Cleaner its very safe and also allows you to back up the registry first.
d) Pagefile (Virtual Memory) -- Right click MY Computer - select properties - Advanced tab - Performance -
advanced tab - Virtual memory click change, you can put the page file on a different drive (if you have one), click
custom size and set Initial size to one and a half times the amount of memory you have fitted i.e. 512MB memory
= set to 768MB, set maximum to double your memory amount i.e. 512MB memory = 1024MB click ok.
If your hard drive is full and there is not enough room for the pagefile this can slow down, freeze or even cause the
PC to crash (restart).
e) Cut down on the programs that load at start up -- Start - Run type msconfig - start up tab- untick everything except for firewall, antivirus and antispyware
and the services that run in the background. http://www.blackviper.com/
2. Hardware

I own a Dell Dimension 8250 w/ Windows XP

Ever since I updated my computer to Internet Explorer 7 (from the most recent version, 6 or 6.2?), my scrolling has become very slow (scrolling down and up the webpage). I have no idea why either. Also, when I close the webpage, the actual webpage becomes white (goes away) and I'm left with my google search, command bar, address bar, you know... (as if you opened a pure white webpage) I have to go to task manager and "End Now". However, this does not always happen and I can close it normally (rarely happens). I tried downloading IE6.2 (or 6 whatever version it was), but it won't let me because it says a newer version of IE is already on the computer.

I'm not really sure if the problem is even from IE or if it's from some other program

Please help & thanks,

Mat

Answer:Internet Explorer 7 - slow scrolling help

Welcome to the forum.

I can't answer your question ...
But to say that many of us have had to roll back to IE6.
I also switched to FireFox for my main "explorer"

IF you want to try rolling back to IE 6 ...
go to Add Remove > check the box that says "show updates" ...
Find and remove the IE 7 update >>> and reboot.

Hello,

I have a Gateway P-6825 laptop running Windows Vista 32-bit, Service Pack 2.  The processor is T5250 1.5GHz and it has 2 GB RAM memory. I realize it's a slightly older machine and the processor is relatively slow, but it seems to have slowed down a bit in the last few months when I access Internet pages.  I am not getting any signs of malware infection but I'm wondering whether it is laden with too many programs or something else.  Any insight you can provide is truly appreciated.

Thanks!

I noticed that in IE 11 on Windows 8.1 that there was this slightly perceived typing lag when entering text in fields displayed in the browser. This lag would not be present in Chrome, Opera, and others... so that's what would make it noticeable. When you type fast, it is most noticeable, but not so bad as to obstruct typing or create errors.

However, now in Windows 10, the lag has increased. Painfully so. I find that with my typing rate, the keyboard input cannot "keep up" and I lose letters! I'd have to go back and correct works due to missing letters. I've resorted to keeping Textpad open and typing all my text there, then copy/paste into the browser fields. The different is very noticeable.

I've searched around and found a few scattered tips about dealing with this, but nothing seems to help. I have to believe there's a setting SOMEWHERE that is responsible. Or... is this a byproduct of Microsoft key logging?

Answer:Slow typing response in Internet Explorer and Edge

NOTE: I had this problem on build 10240, and still having it on 10568.589. And it's NOT a problem in other Microsoft products like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, etc. Chrome, Opera, and Safari do not exhibit this typing delay/response problem. It's only IE and Edge that show it.

Answer:Slow internet/poor performing ShareazaPlus

Hello Rob and welcome,

Hello,

I am experiencing a very frustrating scenario on my machine.
It started out of the blue. I have dial up still and I hardly ever
get on the internet. maybe only an occasional Google search.
It started during a period in which I had not been on the web for at least a week.
*When I click on a folder it stalls and then opens after a few seconds.
*Videos played off my hard drive stutter.
*Startup takes longer than usual.
*Basically, any task I try to perform is stalled.

I have performed the following actions:
ScanDisk
Checkdisk
Defrag
Ran Malwarebytes in Safe Mode and Standard
Ran Super Anti Spyware in Safe Mode and Standard
Ran Hijack This
I have checked programs running on Startup and cleaned that out.
I have 90GB of free space and 1GB of Ram.

I also have done in depth research into the DMA/PIO
possibility.
I am showing UDMA 5 for my HDD, and DMA for my CD/DVD.
It never displayed PIO at all anywhere. However, the symptoms
associated with a HDD reverting back to PIO match what I am seeing.
Is it possible to be in PIO mode, even though it displays DMA?

I am at a loss for what it could be...Please help...Any help would be appreciated greatly.

Answer:Slow response time. Videos stutter. Slow startup.

This may be irrelevant but when was the last time you changed the MB battery? I have had a lot of machine and still do, when the battery is dying funny things can happen. I sure looks like you have covered all the other bases!!

My computer just recently has been running painfully slow. Boot up takes about 10 minutes while log in time has increased a little also. When I attempt to open my programs now, some wont open until 15 minutes later, after I already gave up on them; some don't even open at all. Internet explorer works but takes about a minute to load the homepage and loading times vary. Sometimes it loads quick, sometimes it seems like it has stopped responding. Sometimes explorer completely freezes and I get the "checking for solutions" message. I am really getting frustrated because I have ran all of my anti virus anti spyware, malware etc. I have pccillin antivirus, malwarebytes, ad-aware, and spybot search and destroy, all of which say my comp has 0 problems. Itunes seems to be extremely bad in loading because i can try for 30 min and not get it to load even after uninstalling and reinstalling. I also have cleaned out the comp using ccleaner and have defragmented. I am running low on options and don't know whats wrong this time. Please help!

Answer:Slow boot up, slow program response, freezing

You may have some hardware problems.*** Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic28744.html)Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.*** A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option AB. If you have only one RAM stick installed......run memtest...1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-....iso.zip file.3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-....iso file.4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive. 6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:8. Locate memtest86+-....iso file, and click Open button.9. I got a W500 with Vista Enterprise, I work for a LARGE software company and thought this was going to be the bomb. So I have professional help desk people to help me.  This system frankly has way too many bugs and I hate it. Problems:1. In the docking station I cannot boot the system, it hangs at the Lenovo screen most of the time, but even if I'm lucky enough ot have it boot I still need to manually point to external monitor. Help Desk guy added newest ATI drivers, this didn't help.  So I take it out, boot it all the way and drop it back in.  Than I have to manually tell it to go to the docking station. Try to reboot or sleep, docking station is of no use and same issue. 2. AccuPoint died, tried to turn it on with the ThinkVantage button which indicates I didn't have the UltraNav Driver installed. I than found that driver, installed it, rebooted it, and still have the same issue. will call them tomorrow but for three days acupoint is dead.  Glidepad still works. 3. IE is slow to get moving on lots of different Internet connections, including my home where the 2 year old Toshiba Tecra sitting right next to it works fast. I will recommend to my fellow employees to skip this system, wish I could return it and get another Toshiba. What a POS.

Answer:This system has lots of problems..docking and Acupoint and slow IE response

Vista Ultimate x64 with 4 gigs of ram. 1.) I had the same problem until I manually updated the BIOS and installed the latest drivers using the Lenovo Thinkvantage tool. 2.) No problems with AccuPoint 3.) No problems with Internet connectivity. --- Try checking your bios and running the updater and report back... let us know what BIOS you are on and what items are installed and if it is a fresh install or factory. The more information you post the better.

Am having some performance issues with regard to bootup and internet connection speed. I have DSL but the fastest download rate I can get is 170kbps and should be around 1200kbps for my area. Is there someplace I can check the settings and or restore defaults. The other problem is that when the blue dell logo appears startup it just sits there for 5 to 10 minutes before finally booting up. Any advice or help that might guide me in the right direction would be appreciated. System is a Dell Dimension 700mhz P3 WinXP/SP2.

Thanks

Answer:Slow startup and poor internet transfer speed

Generally it is best to break up your post into separate posts for each problem, but let me take a stab.1. Have you used one of the on-line tests to determine your exact d/l speed?http://www.dslreports.com/toolsIf this tests significantly lower than the speed promised by your provider, you should call its tech support so they can check your connexion.2. There may be several causes for slow booting. One of the most common is that your computer is loading too many unneeded applications when it starts up. There are many applications, such as Spybot Search and Destroy, that list what is being loaded on start up and allows you to delete them. To determine which to delete, look these up at BC's Startup database.A second possible cause is spyware, which can be removed by several good, free applications like Ad-Aware SE.Another possible cause is lack of maintenance. Deleting junk and unneeded files, running scandisk, and defragging should be done on a regular basis.Hope this helps,Regards,John

It has been almost 10 days. Anyone out there? Please help!===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies ... I was playing a computer game when all of the sudden it got pretty choppy. I decided to try to update my drivers. Originally I installed one that I wasn't sure if it was compatible or not, but it worked decently until the problem happened later.

So today I attempted to solve the problem again. I looked up some solutions and was told 'Delete everything that has to do with NVIDIA drivers off your system and download the new driver. Restart, install what you DL'd, restart.'

This worked once even though NVIDIA apparently decided that customer service isn't their forte and only offered video cards that went way past the mode I had. So I went to http://www.tweakforce.com/ and downloaded the latest driver.

When I came back (before installing) I got a slow-scrolling internet screen and a really low resolution. I installed the driver and went through with it again; however when I came back Windows said there was new hardware (for like 6 different things), none of which it could automatically install. So I thought the driver must've been bad and deleted it and tried again with another one.

When I tried installing this one I got the error: "The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit." I have no idea what to do at this point, but I still have a slow scrolling internet and no way to install any NVIDIA drivers (hell, I don't even know which drivers I should try t... Read more

That's not the first step I would have taken. Rarely do drivers 'just go bad'. You may have another problem.

The rest of your post is a bit confusing. Also note that the latest Nvidia drivers aren't always the best choice. Drivers for laptops usually have to come from the manufacturer.

Maybe this forum will help.

My computer has been slow lately. It lags and I figure I have spyware and such on it. I have ZeroAds, The Ultimate Troubleshooter, Norton System Works, and Norton Antivirus. It's a little quicker since I installed and updated these, but still not much better. I wasn't sure if these programs got rid of spyware or anything or if I should try some different software. Also, I wasn't sure if having all these programs to try and clean up my computer would counteract eachother and slow down my computer. Also, the time it takes to boot up my computer is a lot longer than it ever has been. Finally, my Internet Explorer doesn't work right. If I use AOL, the internet usually works right, but when I try Internet Explorer (because I don't have AOL at school), I get tons of popups even though I have ZeroAds and then Explorer just freezes and eventually I have to CTRL ALT DELETE it. If anyone knows how to help me it'd be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Slow XP, slow startup, and problems with Internet Explorer

Use Ad Aware (http://www.ad-aware.com) and Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html). Make sure you update them with their update feature.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L505 running Windows 7 Home Premium, 3GB ram, 2.1GHz Intel Core2 Duo. I bought it new 11/10. I've had increasing problems over the past several months - IE(9) often crashes, especially when I try to open a PDF from the web. Sometimes other browsers can't open PDFs either. Sometimes IE just processes and doesn't open any webpage. I'm continually asked to install Google Toolbar, and it won't accept "don't allow". Sometimes I get a message that a program has tried to change my home page. I've ran several programs to try and fix things - Ad-Aware, Spybot, System Mechanic Premium, System Suite, and Driver Genius. I usually installed, ran, and uninstalled these utilities in hopes they wouldn't conflict with each other. I used AVG from the time I bought the PC until it expired this month andI switched to Kasperskys. I suspect trying a variety of products only made matters worse or my obsession with Jenkat Games has wrecked havoc with the system.

When it started taking over 2 min to start up and over 3 min to shut down, I decided to turn to you. When I ran HJT, I got an error message - see the message and host images attached as hjterror.doc. I clicked ok and hjt went ahead and ran.
When I ran the GMER scan, it scanned for 40 hrs straight before I finally clicked on 'stop' and saved the file. At one point it was scanning the C:\ windows folder and 12 hrs later it was scanning C:\games so I think ... Read more

For some odd reason, in the past 4 weeks, my streaming video has become VERY slow, and I do not know why. I have a high-speed cable connection, the same I have had for the past 6 months. It is slow, sound-with-stil-images and/or constantly rebuffering, and this is true with WIndows Media, Winamp, Realplayer and even Flash videos (on YouTube for example). I cannot take it anymore. I tried this Hijackthis thing, and this is my log:

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

Answer:Help! Slow Computer, Slow Internet. Slow, Slow, Slow!

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

i recently reformated my HD on my dell dimension and installed windows home, my dad later upgraded it to windows prof (i didnt check anything before this upgrade, i don't remember if the same problems were there before upgrading to professional). i havent installed service pack 2 yet. ive reformatted/reinstalled once before (to xp home) and didn't have these problems. i have an LCD monitor.

when i scroll (both left or right, whether mousewheel or dragging bar) it goes VERY slow (both in browser and in text editors like notepad)

restoring/maximizing windows, and moving windows around, are also very choppy and slow

and finally the harddrive seems slow because file copying takes longer than it used to

anything i can do?

thanks
chris

p.s. playing video is pretty choppy (again with screen) and video thumbnails take a while to load (again with HD)

previously (before reformat) i could set the fps/refresh rate, but now the only thing in the monitor tab (display properties, advanced, monitor) is scr. refresh rate: use monitor default setting..... is this an xp pro thing?

Answer:formatted and reinstalled windows, HD seems slow and scrolling/windows are very slow

I just spent an hour on the phone with Dell and he's telling me I need to do a clean install of my original operating system in order to get my system back up to speed. No way I'm doing that, and I know you guys can help get things back to normal. So it is a windows problem that is making system run very, excrutiatingly slow - I mean frustratingly slow.

What should I do first? Would a hi-jack log be helpful? I am running one now to paste onto this email.

I've been on the Lenovo boards for a while now, and there have been more than a few problems coming up with the SL(X)00 series notebooks... it appears to me that many folks purchasing these notebooks wish to downgrade to WindowsXP.  Vista isn't well-received, so that's understandable.  However, the SATA driver issue is only the beginning of the headaches I've gone through with this machine.  There is, however, a silver lining:  I managed to get my SL500 booting in under 30 seconds with a full SATA-capable, clean install of XP pro with full driver support and all my necessary programs. I'll try to explain how, in hopes that other folks can benefit from my trail-blazing.  This guide contains two parts.  Part 1 involves getting SATA drivers working with a clean downgrade to Windows XP.  Part 2 involves some of the software / hardware issues inherent with this notebook while running WinXP.    Note:  I don't work for lenovo, I'm not an IT professional, and I don't have time to answer individual questions.I won't be checking this thread very often and I can't address individual issues not enumerated by the guide itself.Use the steps outlined here at your own risk, and always back up your files! If you found this guide helpful, I'm glad.  I'm upset that it took me almost 6 months and a whole pile of frustration to finally resolve the majority of the crippling problems with this notebook.  I'm FURTHER upset that lenovo d... Greetings,

It all started five weeks ago. System crashed, not doing anything special. Gave a keyboard failure with suggestion to check for viruses(which I did using everything in the book, including combofix). Also warned to remove any newly installed drives or controlloers followed by a:

STOP: 0x0000007B(0xF78D2524,0xC0000034,(0x0000000,0x0000000)

The disconcerting part is that I couldn't access the Windows Recovery Console option when it appeared during reboot. Now when I attempt to enter the Recovery Console I just get a flashing cursor in the upper left-hand corner of a completely dark screen. Fortunately I had a XP Media Edition Reinstallation OS disk which I used to run CHKDSK /r. It was reported back that errors were found and files replaced(or something like that). That got me back to the point where I can reboot.

But!!! It now reboots terribly slow and I am still unable to use the Recovery Console during boot up despite having run Combofix again in order to have it re-installed.

I ran one pass of memtest86 and ran the manufacturer's diagnostic on the C drive, including the extended test. All passed(except the IDE PATA drive, but this is just a separate storage drive on a different channel than the C drive.

I've since taken the storage drive out in the bio, but that didn't improve the slowness of the boot up time.

Once I'm up and running the computer doesn't seem any different EXCEPT that now I can't hardly run Google... Read more

hello!

i am experiencing a rather annoying problem with my Toshiba Satellite Pro M30 laptop. Sometimes, when i am typing, delays occur before characters appear on the screen. It occurs everywhere: msn chat client, internet explorer's address bar and even in Start -> Run menu.
This is a very annoying problem which i have never experienced before.
Please do not advise to use system recovery cds.

Answer:SP M30: Slow key response

Hi

I don?t believe that someone will advice you to reinstall the unit with recovery CD maybe just to remove some applications that run in the background and take up the HDD activity.

As I can see you have this unit almost a year. Since when you have this problem?
Believe me on this way it is not easy to give you some precise advice. Try to make some tests and end useless running processes in task manager. Try also to end antivir program if you have one installed on your unit. Test it a little bit. Maybe you will find out why this happen.

Good luck!

Hi,

My notebook response has been so slow for the past 2 weeks. I don't remember installing harmful software before the problem began.
I am running on Vista Home Premium 32-bit with 4GB RAM.

This slowness happens to me whether I am connect to the internet or not and also in safe mode. However, it does not occur all the time.
For instance, I could begin typing this post normally but there is also time period when it takes about 5 seconds for the letters to appear on the screen or when I scroll up and down or open a folder in windows explorer. This lag time happens to all of my office applications, IE, windows explorer or even when I right-click on the desktop screen while there is no other application running.

I tried running online scan, e.g. BitDefender, ESET and some of the free malware programs like IObit Security 360 and Malwarebyte's Antispyware but found nothing. I also have Symantec AV installed since I bought this computer. I know this is quite heavily loaded but why my problem only just occured recently.

I also tried disable a few start-up programs in msconfig but to no avail. I suspect that my notebook is infected beyond my little knowledge to solve it. That's why I am here asking for your help.

Below is my DSS LOG:

Contacted Mcafee help desk twice. First time the guy on chat-help told me to Uncheck the ' Turn on Netguard' option and restart the pc. But that did not solve the peoblem.
Next time the another help guy told me to give him remote access to re-install the McAfee software but i did not agree.
The problem is still exist & I would appreciate any help from you.

Question: Slow response

While on the web, scrolling through pages is very slow, even clicking on items the response is slow. This does not happen when off line. I changed the modem but this did not help, Ive got System Works 2003 but it does not detect any problem. Defrag and the usual remedies have not helped either. I am using Windows 98 SE. Any ideas?

Answer:Slow response

Run CoolWebShredder.

If no joy, download HijackThis. Unzip, run, "Scan", "Scan" changes to "Save log". Save the log and copy and paste the HijackThis log into your next post.

Do not fix anything in HijackThis. Most entries will be harmless.
