Win2k Rig, wanting best performance

Question: Win2k Rig, wanting best performance

What I have is a Dell Dimension 8300 Series desktop PC that originally ran WinXP, but I've taken the best parts for it that I had on hand, slapped them inside, and loaded Win2k. Reason? Old games of course.

What I want to know is: What kind of badass hardware can I put in here that is compatible with Win2k? I have searched a bit online about what kind of graphics might work, but the only piece of info I've found so far is what the nVidia drivers for Win2k supported (I believe it was up to GeForce 8 series). But what's the best card that Win2k supports? Also, what kind of CPU can I upgrade this to?

Here's the current hardware specs:
Pentium 4 2.6GHz (800MHz bus and 512KB cache on PGA478 socket).
nVidia GeForce 6800 GT (AGP)
3GB DDR 400 (2x 1GB, 2x 512MB. I know I can go up to 4GB total)
SATA-150 40GB HDD (Not much, but how much space does one really need for old games?)
CD-RW drive (second optical drive because why not)

I don't want to know an easier way to get top performance for older games (I'm pretty sure there is one), so please don't call me out on taking a pointless project. I want to know what Windows 2000 can actually do on legit hardware.

Thank you

Preferred Solution: Win2k Rig, wanting best performance

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am running a p4 2.8 on a Windows 2000 pro machine and my preformance is really hurting. The install if is about a month old and in the last week or so, even from a fresh boot up when i look at my Task Manager under the Performance tab it runs steady 50-55% CPU usage with nothing running in the background but my ATI driver software. There is nothing in the applications tab and under Processes everything looks to be normal windows applications. Any ideas as to what is causing my machine to use so much CPU with nothing going on? Thanks!

Any online GOOD TWEAKING outhere for Win2K?

Answer:Performance tweak for Win2K?

It's pretty well tweaked already compared to XP... since the visuals are quite barren. Most of the XP tweaks still apply though since it is based on the same kernel.

Hi peps!!!

In Win2k under Admin. Tools there is a Computer Management app.

If I view drivers in mine it says Ultra66 - Kernal Driver - Stopped.

I have added a line to my registry to enable does anyone know what this means?

I am sure it has nothing to with my dropping Sandra BEnches but maybe it would be nice to make it run? My Sandra Bench marks have dropped from a consistant 18400 to 16800??

Cheers people!!!!

im doing a report im my computers class and i have a computer with a fresh install of windows 2k and i need to do tweaks to the os. any registry hacks or start up mods are cool.

Answer:whats a good win2k performance mod?

What kind of report? One on securing a Windows install would be much more useful and practical than tweaking the performance of a Windows install (being that the latter is mostly preference / opinion).

//edit: clarified the "performance" part. The stuff below is good for general tweaking, but your thread title specifically mentions "performance."

Win2k newbie here...

Can anyone tell me how to run Performance Monitor on a NT4 server box from Win2K Pro? Do I need to install software, or just learn how to use what's included with Win2k??

I figured out how to get Usrmgr, DHCP Admin, etc running to manage NT4 server, but I can only see my local computer in Perf Mon on my Win2k PC.

Thanks all

Answer:{Advice Offered} - View performance on NT4 from Win2k

You can use the performace utility in Win2K. When you click on the PLUS sign to add a counter, your computer name is specified (like \\BRAIN ), there you can add a different computer's name, like \\SERVER.

Then you will see all the counters available on the SERVER machine.

I am having problems with slowness on my new Win2k network. It is a Windows 2000 Small Business Server with less then 40 users. This is a new install, it was an upgrade from NT but we did a clean install.

Since the upgrade the users are complaining of poor network response when opening files on the server. I have one user that has some linked Excel files that takes about 20 seconds to open and 15 seconds to save. No one ever timed how long it took to do before the upgrade but the user is sure that it was close to about 5 seconds.

The only protocol loaded on the WS is TCP/IP but File and Print Sharing is loaded, would that use bandwidth? I have read posts from other boards that mention setting the NIC to full duplex 100 instead of Auto Sense. When I change the WS from Auto to full the client can no longer talk to the network. The server is set to Full 100.

From what I gather Auto Sense can cause broadcast storms. I just downloaded LanExplorer that is supposed to help an Admin identify storms, bottle necks, etc… but I am not sure what I should be looking for. Any ideas or advice?

I successfully installed win98se / win2k / winxp (in that order) and had them all functioning properly using the windows boot loader. Well at least for a while. Today I tried to boot into win2k and it loaded to the point where it displayed my desktop wallpaper. It did not load the tasbar or start menu, and ctrl+alt+del did nothing. After a few minutes, it played the sound it plays when it loads up, and started flashing repeatedly the messages "Loading your configuration" and "Saving your configuration" or somesuch. It would not stop playing the sound and flashing those messages until I reset the machine. I then attempted to boot into XP, which ran chkdsk and said it "fixed" something in my win2k partition.

Any ideas what this could be and how I might fix it?

Answer:win98se/win2k/winxp multiboot will not fully load win2k anymore

Don't exactly know what the problem is but you could try doing a repair install using the win2k CD. All your files and stuff won't be affected but to be safe backup your files first.

I have one PC setup with Win2K Professional. It is used as a game server, sharing the cable modem, file server, and web server. I am replacing it with another PC that has Win2K Server. I have saved all the security updates from the old pc (in the Q######_whatever.exe format). Should I apply these updates to the new PC? I have about 30 of these updates. I've went to the Windows update site and got all the critical updates, but I know there are other bugs out there and I'd like to have this PC as secure as possible.

Thanks in advance!

The guides at Microsoft TechNet are good.
But, Windows 2000 does not function as a PDC or BDC. Any domain controller functions on that OS require Active Directory. I am wanting to dual boot my system to speed up video encoding etc. - the idea being that one O/S will only contain software necessary for the editing & encoding whilst the other O/S will contain Office etc (all the usual junk).I thought that I had understood the reply to my earlier posting click here but, this is the current set up: -Standard Win2k is set up on G drive (and works fineI want to set up a second copy of Win2k on D drive (a separate drive - not a partition of G)When I went to install Win2k the only location that it was offering to install to was G drive (I assume that would have overwritten the existing O/S so I canceled it)Now on booting up I get the option to boot to Win2k or Win2k SETUP. If I choose the second option it offers to install onto G drive...which I don't I?I would have "walked away" when the problem started but for this boot option issue! Can anyone help please?

Answer:Win2k & Win2k dual boot

Sigh!I've just posted a rather long-winded message on your other thread, on the assumption that you have succeeded or will succeed in installing the 2nd copy. So ignore that post. You're right, you don't want to install again to the G drive.I don't know why your D drive is not available for installation. Is it not even shown on the list of partitions, or is it shown, but when you select it, w2k Setup tells you you can't do it, or some error message?Since your copy of w2k is on a G drive, it suggests that you may have a rather complicated partition system, but I don't know.Your idea of having 2 copies of w2k is actually a good idea. But if there's a problem installing it, then bad luck.If that problem cannot be resolved, and you want to remove the boot option for W2k Setup, here's what you do.These instructions are on the assumption that there's only one active partition (the partition the computer boots from), which is your C drive. If you have a different configuration, please post back.Start computer and select the proper w2k copy from the selection screen.First make sure that your default OS is w2k proper, and not the setup (this should be shown on the boot selection screen when you boot up the computer). But check it anyway. When you're in w2k, right click My Computer, select Properties, Startup and Recovery.Under the section default operating system, see if it shows the default OS as "Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect. If so, leave it alone. If not, click the... Read more

I seem to be doing more and more video editing and encoding using my little old self-built Duron 1200 system With all the stuff going on in the background it seems to make sense to re-boot to a minimal system when encoding etc.Is it as simple as putting the Win2k disk in (is the option there to dual boot?) and as for the system would be running either one or the other Win2k I assume that I'm not breaching copyright if I install the same copy on both boot options (if thats possible)Thanks in advance for the adviceTony

Answer:Dual boot Win2k & Win2k

You will need a second partition to install the second copy onto. When you put in the cd and boot it will give the option to upgrade a current version or do a full install (possibly called advanced). Choose the second and tell it the partition you want. There should be no problems with it though - win2k is a fairly sensible OS and does as it is asked.

As the topic suggested, can someone suggest how i can do that..

i've used a win98 boot disk with cd support to load into dos and then try to run setup.exe (from the win2k non bootable cd) but it didnt like that.. said that setup.exe cannot run in dos.

the 4 win2k boot disks gave me an "inaccessible boot device" after loading disk4.

By the way i've partitioned the hdd into 2 40GB's using the win98 boot disk.

any help would be much appreciated.

thank you

Guys I am bewildered. Somewhere during installing codecs and getting the FRUCTA virus I believe, my Win2k Pro install has morphed into Win2k SERVER. Complete with Server Family bootup splash screen, shutdown screen, "Server" start menu banner, etc. Some software won't even install due to it reporting itself as Server instead of Pro. I've went through all the updates on this fresh install and I have no idea what has happened.Any thoughts on what caused this and how to get back to Pro without a reinstall? I can reinstall but I'm afraid it'll happen again if I don't know what caused it in the first place.I know this OS is old and I need a new pc, etc but at this time I cannot upgrade either. Thanks.

Answer:Win2k Pro has morphed into Win2k Server

Sounds more like you were hacked instead of a virus.Personally I would wipe the drive and reinstall pro from scratch or there maybe a backdoor for the hacker.Make sure you install a software firewall and antivirus/antispyware BEFORE you connect to the internet if you are not behind a router.

Just curious if anyone has run into this. A win2k server with multiple win2k workstations. All is working fine, but one workstation. This workstaion can be added and removed from the domain all day long without an issue. However, when you try to logon to the domain it error out with DOMIAN is not available.

Answer:Win2k server , Win2k worstation - can add to domain but not logon to domain

when you're logged on locally, is everything in ipconfig correct? when you run an nslookup on the domain, does it return your dns servers? DNS is the root of many evils in a w2k environment, but it's odd that only the one machine would be affected.

I have a Z60M using XP, and have poor performance due to processor operating at near 100%,  I found that the process ScSvc.exe had most of the CPU.  I ended the process, and have an operable machine again.   I downloaded the latest version of ScSvc, but that did not correct the problem. I am tempted to disable all the thinkpad software and go to a pure XP system, but have not done any looking into that. Has anyone experienced these problems, or disabled the thinkpad software?

Hi  I have lenovo z580 for one year now , Since I bought it the performance was very bad I was unstaisfied with it . from one week ago i go to bios setting and then I tried to change the vga setting from Optimus to UMA only ( it means intel vga card only ) After this i was surpriesd that performance became very good and boot time became 40 second instead of 170 second ) . So I think there is a problem with my nVIDIA card . I update the driver from NVIDIA website but still the same slowness So now I am using only the intel card Is there is any idea about this issue ? I think the PC will be more faster if nVIDIA card work probably . My PC Details  Lenovo Z580  Model 20135 , Intel i7 -3612QM CPU @ 2.1 GHz , Windows 7 64bit Home Ram was 4 GB and I incresed it to 12 GB enhance the performance but no effect HDD : 500 GB

Answer:Z580 , I have good performance with Intel VGA and bad performance with nVIDIA VGA

I have the same problem until now I don't have any ideathe laptop performance is perfect when the memory is 8G or less with Intel and Nvidia enabledbut when I increase the memory to 10G , 12G or 16 the performance of Booting, loading windows and normal working is very very very slow when you disable the Nvidia Card and chose UMA only from the Bios the performance is perfect with Intel graphic card only

I have a liquid cooler on my cpu and I just want to know if I can leave my pc on 24/7 without causing any problems?

Many Thanks

Answer:Just Wanting To Know

Should not cause any problem if the water cooling kit is a good brand.
My games box is is dual circuit water cooled (CPU and graphics card) and last week I replaced the Eheim water pump. It had been running 24/7 since 2011. The only thing I would do is to put some temperature monitoring software to shut the pc down if it overheats. Of course you can always leave it to overheat and the CPU will shut everything down but by this time damage may already have been done.
There are many temperature monitoring programs and I use an old one called Real Temp GT 360 and it is configured for sensing on 6 channels. Like many others Real Temp allows you to create the temperature trigger points and mine are set for 60°C as the system typically runs at 31°C or if working hard on a hot day may get up to 42°C
My pump failure is the first problem on this system since it was built and it still has reasonably good performance as the i7 Extreme CPU has been overclocked to 4.6GHz all of its working life.

Is your liquid cooling a custom system or one of the all in one sealed systems like the Corsair, Silverstone, Antec, Thermaltake or CoolerMaster units?

I apologize if this has been covered somewhere, but I couldn't find that it had. I recently purchased a Sony DVD R 22x drive Serial ATA. When I installed it into my computer I had to buy a data cable for it and also a power adapter for it. It was replacing at PATA DVD R and I also at the present time have a factory CD-RW PATA installed. My question is this:

What changes to I have to make to my system to allow for the SATA and PATA to work. I originally had it in combination mode, but keeping it in combination mode will not allow me to turn on the SATA slot on my board. I also have two hard drives that are also SATA. Am I going to have problems since I still have my original CD-R drive as PATA? Do i need to replace that one with a SATA drive as well?

Any help would be appreciated, and again I apologize if I sound like an idiot trying to explain all of this.

Question: Wanting to be sure

Recently experienced some application oddities (I know this is vague, I do apologize; I honestly can't recall what issues got me started with this overall issue) For example, as a result of these issues, I downloaded LRC; during it's first scan it ended up hanging and crashed. This added to my concern, so I paniced and did a system restore. I then did a full scan with MSE with no issues found.

I felt better, until this AM; Chrome started doing the "unresonpsive" thing, this has never been an issue for me prior. Shutting chrome down and restarting, it works. Did a google search and got the "redirect/hijack" issue on all results; again, never had this issue before. (Quick research suggested to uncheck "DNS prefetching", I did and it seems to be ok, but?

So, now I'm here, because I'd feel much better knowing I'm actually fixed rather than seemingly ok due to workarounds.

Thanks in advance for any help...

Question: wanting new laptop

Where to start, I currently have a compaq AMD Athlon 1.6 Ghz running xp home. I have never had any problems with it, it is still working great, but I'm wanting a fast laptop with a dvd burner in it. I have looked at Toshiba with xp home Centrino processor 1.6ghz 400 bus, 512 ram which I also have in the old laptop. my question is, is the speed going to be the same as what I have now????? I have heard that the centrino really isnt faster in processor like they used to say. I'm thinking I would be better off with the Pentium 4 processor with at least 2.8ghz or 3.06ghz.
any in put would be great
Thanks all.

Answer:wanting new laptop

Not familiar with the new centrino processor but I would suspect that a pentium 4, 2.8-3.0 ghz would be faster. Just for the fact that the ghz is almost doubled. Can't believe a centrion processor can make up that much ground.

Answer:For those wanting Aero

For some reason it's not working on my Win 10 Pro. Decompressed the .rar file to C:\, ran the .bat file, ran the install file, rebooted, and still have the blah opaque default Win10 title bar.

[edited to add:]

I missed the critical "run installx64.bat as administrator" in the instructions. Once I ran the .bat file as administrator, it installed.

However, there's a minor, but irritating, glitch. Running the mouse cursor over a title bar leaves a trail of rectangular artifacts. It is most noticeable if the title bar is in front of a white background. I tried to capture a screen shot, but it doesn't show the artifacts.

While the hack shows promise, on my system anyway, it's not quite "there" yet.

In case it's video card dependent I'm using the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 on my i3-3225 processor.

I am going to want another laptop in the near future. Size about 15-17" is what I would like. The biggest problem that I encounter when looking for one is whether I need a firewire port or not. That is what I would like someone to suggest to me what would be best. I will be using it for general surfing but it will also be used after games where I will want to download a game into the computer to transfer it to another computer for editing or do some editing on it also. Is it necessary to have a firewire port or can I buy an add on card with firewire in it? What is the most feasible? That would greatly increase the choice of computer I could buy.

This forum looked like a great place to get some of my questions answered. I am wanting to buy and build my own computer. I have had a laptop for the past five years, and it is time to upgrade.

I have been searching around the net and trying to find good deals and such.

Here is what I want:

Case: Chenming 602 Case with Full Window (Black)

Hard Drive: 160 Gig (maybe SATA)

CD/DVD Drive: 8x DVD/RW Drive

Video Card: at least 128 MB card

Sound Card: SoundBlaster 5.1

Memory: at least 512 MB

But I am a little confused when it comes to Motherboards and Processors.

Here are some questions that I have:

- What kind of Motherboard should I get to provide the proper performace for the other hardware that I listed?

- What processor should I get? AMD? Intel?

- Is a SATA hard drive really worth it? Or should I stick with IDE?

- Where is the best place to get help in my town? Fry's? Compusa? Smaller business?

I may have other questions as I near the puchasing of my computer.

Thanks for you help!

Answer:Wanting to Build My Own..

a) what are you planning to do with your computer?

b) doesn't matter how much RAM is in your video card, matters on the chipset, i.e. 128mb nVidia 6800 > 256mb 9600xt or something . . .

c) SATA is worth it because the cable is smaller, which allows better airflow

d) best place for retail is Fry's . . . but online sites are the way to go, i.e. , , and

I am producing a web site and am now considering hosting and more important at the moment a domain name.I have heard that there is a new 'dot' type i.e. '.ws'. Is this true and could I use it for private stuff (with perhaps a bit of business on the side)? Is '' worth having (I am finding the names I want are more or less gone! Also where is it best to buy my domain names? Although I am prepared to consider a complete host package for about £5/mth, I want independance between name and hoster. A little confused generally on this front. Perhaps there is somewhere I can read in depth about this. Trying not to end up a right plonker with something I do'nt want.On the Host front I have looked at 1&1 (looks good for a novice but do I need their software as I am plunging in with MX and CSS), Fasthosts, and will soon look at namesco. Some general airing and directing would be appreciated before I commit. Cheers.

Question: Wanting to Upgrade

I am very interested in upgrading my desktop, but may find out it is cheaper to just buy a new one.

I bought a eMachines EL1358G - obviously not a workhorse - and all I want it to be able to do at this time is to do a decent job with a not too intensive 3D program for presentation purposes. Right now it is jerky. I don't mind going to 8 gig RAM from the 3 gig I have now, and I don't mind installing a PCI Express video card if I know this will help. I just don't know how to find out how much my performance will improve with these changes. Also, if needed, I can replace the AMD Athlon II X2 dual core chip if I am able to (once again, I don't know where to get this info). If anyone can answer my questions, or point me to a website or supplier that can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

I have a compaq 5150wm it has a micro atx board (1.3 thunderbird) in it.
I want to get a A7N8X-VM board to put in the box as well as 2500+ athlon xp (or faster).I also will put pc 2700 ddr ram in it.

Will I be able to swich over to the new hardware and then put my compaq cd in and start over with the new hardware in the pc box. Or, after I put in the new mobo, cpu, and ram will the computer automatically reconize the hard drive cd roms and other software. Im having lots of trouble because I do not know if I can keep all my old stuff. Its not like compaq gives you drivers for the cd roms and other hardware.

One last thing is the bios version imbedded in the mobo or is it on the hard drive.

Thanks for any help you can give me

Answer:Wanting to upgrade need help!

Which OS are you running?

Forget about the compaq CD, have you make sure that you have a graphics card... most branded Pre-built pcs like COmpaq comes with on-board graphics, thus decreasing the cost of production.

I m not sure you compaq case would allow you easily to unfit your old mobo. I must say that some evil pc manufacturers like to design the case in the way that makes upgrading a tedious task. Marketing Strategy i guess. You don't need driver cds for CD-Drives, Windows will automatically install them. Try backing up your HDD contents if you have a CD_RW.

BIOS is most frequently found on the motherboard itself.

Question: wanting to upgrade

i have a compaq pc, and i'm wanting to make it faster and have more memory. i now have 120 mb ram and on the system properties screen says following: no PC card,( what is this, and will it help improve what i'm looking for. AMD Duran(tm) Processor, is this older than a pentium cause i have no idea what it is (used computer). would like to turn this computer into a rocket ship for under $300.00, is this possible? and dont worry, i know i sound new to the pc, and you are right, thats why i'm having things installed by a professional when i decide what i want to purchase for upgrade. new computer is out of the question for awhile. any insight appreciated.

Answer:wanting to upgrade

There is no way for anyone to say what you have, without being able to " see" what you have. A Duron is newer than a plain Pentium, but you could have a Pentium 4 chip for all we know. Take the machine to a pro, who should be able to tell you in ten minutes what you might be able to accomplish with it for x amount of $. Some computers are far more upgradeable than others....not usually Compaqs, tho. For one thing, Restore disks, if you got any with the computer, will not work when hardware is changed. You may have to buy a new Operating System- which would add to your total cost. $300 is a pretty good chunk toward a lot newer computer with much better features. Just my opinion! Pc Cards- additional features on removable card media, like memory, modems, etc. New things about every day- pick up a good computing or laptop magazine and you will see lots of ads and articles about the extras you can use, depending on the age of the computer.

I have a really old system which my DH rescued from his work.  It's currently running Win NT (don't know version as I don't have the password), but I want to change it to Windows 98SE.  I have the discs, but when I put them in and reboot I get a BIOS error saying the disc contents are incompatible with the BIOS.   I thought I'd try formatting the C drive to see if that would help, but every time I try the "format"command in DOS it complains it can't read drive G.The PC is an old vectra VL which says it's designed for Win 95 so I don't even know if it will run 98, but I'm hoping someone here will know.Thankyou

Hello everybody!

I'm considering building a PC,partially to save money, and partially to satisfy my curiosity.

Do any of you have any advice? I need to know everything; from what case to use, motherboard, processor etc....
The machine will be used mainly for games (flight simulators) so it has to be rather powerful and fast. I'm not aiming for the top of the line here (money, you know?) but a solid decent machine that will run the majority of sims out there.

I'll be very grateful for your input.

Answer:wanting to build a PC

There's a lot of great stuff out there. I'd recommend a good AMD machine in order to really save money.. is probably the best on the net, or close too it. Check in the refurbished stuff, 80% of the time, the cables and everything comes with the refurbished boards. Buy the monitor and the hard drive off any deals you find here...

My cases come from newegg as well.

I buy cables and fans from

In my person opinion, stay away from compgeeks, the shipping is high, and what they sell is generally low end. The only real deal I found there is they have a Geforce 440SE 128MB DDR for $50, other than that, nada.

Hi Folks,

For the second time in about 10 days I have had to re-activate Windows XP because it says I have made a major change to the system. I have not changed anything (hardware or software). Is this a sign of something bad happening (OS getting corrupted, HD going bad or Trojan or Virus)? No other apparent problems. Or should I just re-activate and not worry?

Thanks in Advance,
Bob Schoner

Answer:xp Keeps wanting me to re-activate

Could be a flaky driver, or registry corruption.

Check something for me? Go to msconfig (start, run, msconfig) and click on the services tab. Put a check in hide all ms services, and then post here what the names are of the remaning services.

To be honest with you.. the easiest way to do this would be to have someone look at it, because they can tell you right then what you do and don't need. But to answer your question, there are many programs that create log files, yes, but I don't know of a program that can do that for your whole computer and what you mentioned.

I want to upgrade it a bit, not make it the new super computer but make it more viable. What I need is a new graphics card mainly, then a new processor.Atm it has a nvidia geforce MX440. and a 2.8ghz processor, pentium.Wen it comes to upgrading and such i am a total novice and really dont know where to start. How would I check compatibility between the products, also I do not want to change my harddrive and have enougH RAM. Any help is much appreciated.

Answer:Wanting to upgrade my old PC - need help :<

Hi, well for a start, I don't think your processor needs upgrading, 2.8Ghz is pretty good. I do loads with my pc and I only have a 1.8Ghz processor. If you have been happy with your graphics card up till now, and you don't have any problems, why change. If you have less than 2Gb of RAM, then that is what I would advise you to spend your money on - more RAM. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

Hello Neoglyphix, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Sorry, but no you cannot use a beta key on a RTM (retail) version of Windows 7.

The RTM is available at your local retail store. If you have a friend that has a copy of Windows 7, then you can use their Windows 7 installation disc to only install and not activate on your computer for a up to 120 days trial period.

Hope this helps,

Well after trying this the first time I'm afraid I blew my mobo..I was going to upgrade my CPU from a P4 2.8 to a P4 3.0 HT...but all I did was remove my 2.8 processor, and put the 3.0 HT fit in perfectly...but with the 3.0..I used the same heatsink and fan that I had on the 2.8....because this 3.0 was from a machine I just bought for parts and noticed the processor was still good because I ran it in another machine with no problems at all. The fan and heatsink that was on the 3.0 look similar to the one I originally have..When doing an you have to replace heatsink and fan???

[LINK] Aero Glass with Gaussian blur for build 10240: x64 only : Windows10

It's officially only for x64, but it does work in x86, but not as well as the official debug version.

The Debug version at Aero Glass for Windows 8.x+

In case it's video card dependent I'm using the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 on my i3-3225 processor.

does a core 2 duo run much cooler than pentium d? i don't really want to have to go big on fans or cooling methods and things

Answer:Got a Pentium D, maybe wanting something else

Per processor, it does run cooler, less energy and the like. The problem is there are more processors on a chip so overall it can run just as hot or even more so. I would think a core 2 duo M would be cooler and faster than an AMD turion though.

Hey guys!
You've all helped me immensly in the past with various pc related questions so I thought I would come here for your advice again.
I'm looking to get a Gaming pc for my 15 year old son. I don't think he needs anything too flasy for the moment as he mostley plays World of Warcraft and a few FPS's and managerial games. So I found this...

What do you guys reckon? Is this decent for the price? I'm not comfortable buying the pieces and then putting them together myself so I figured a premade tower would be decent enough.
We aren't looking for top of the range, but something capeable of at least playing the latestish games on the lowest settings is fine.
Thanks in advance guys.

Answer:So I'm wanting a Gaming PC...

Well, I'll take a stab at this since no one else has responded yet. (I saw you were asking about this in MG's chat window when I first logged on.)

I live in the U.S. so I'm not familiar with this company. The hardware looks pretty decent, though I note that for some items (such as the hard drive) they don't specify a brand name. As long as it's not some off brand you've never heard of it's probably fine. And be sure you're getting the 2 gigabytes of RAM and the video card upgrade at no additional charge (you definitely want the 8600 GT, not the 7600 which is a much slower card). Both the additional RAM and the faster video card should make the computer perform much better and capable of running more recent games at higher settings.

But what about a monitor, keyboard and mouse? Do you have those already? They're apparently not included in the price. Make sure that your monitor is compatible with this video card -- that it has the right kind of connectors to plug into the back of the computer/video card. Some video cards may only have digital sockets while other may have both analog and digital. Check to see which kind your old monitor has (assuming that's what you're going to use) and check to make sure you can plug it into the new graphics/video card.

That quoted price doesn't include an operating system either. Note down toward the bottom of the page they list the Vista Home Premium Operating System, ... Read more

Question: Wanting to upgrade

I have a Dell 1721 laptop with an ATI Radeon X1270 vid card... Dont think its actually a card have not opened the computer but i am assuming its built onto the motherboard... My only question is there a way to install a better vid card....vid gpu... or something along those lines?

Any help would be appreciated,

Answer:Wanting to upgrade

I dont think you can install an add-on GFX card on a Laptop.
You *could* give it to Dell and they *may* replace it for a Laptop with a better card.

well i guess il start off by saying im new to the forums so hello everyone. And i was wondering if i can get anymore speed out of my system at all. specs are........

AMD Athlon 64 3400
MSI K8N Neo platinum
Crucial Ballistics 512mb stick
ATI Radeon 9600 pro

I have my bio's all updated and drivers all updated and my system still seems to slow for what i got. I mean starting up windows and loading all the startup programs takes like 2 minutes before i get normal speed without that lag type effect. After exiting games it takes several minutes before i can do simple stuff like opening the programs menu or even restarting my system to renew all the memory settings.

Lately ive been tinkering around in the bio's trying to increase my cpu fsb and i dont notice any difference in speed. My system is reliable tho and never crashes, freezes or anything, it just seems underpowered. I am going to be picking up another stick of 512 and a radeon x800 all in wonder so im hoping i can see some more performance soon. But in the mean time is there anything else i can tell ya about my system to help get more out of my computer now? I dont think it should take 2 minutes for all the startup programs to start before my computer gets rid of that laggy feeling. Can anyone possibly help me?

Answer:wanting more out of my system

Thanks for any help & suggestions

Answer:Wanting To Install 2nd Os

It sounds like you're trying to circumvent the copy protections on the Vista Upgrade disk, which is definately against the rules here.

If that's not what you're asking, then please forgive me and clarify what, exactly you're trying to do.

Question: Wanting to upgrade

I thinking of upgrading my GPU from the Geforce GTX 650 to the EVGA 750 ti, but I am not sure if this upgrade will help with the FPS that I see in games. I am not totally sure what PSU I have, it is either 450 or 500 WATT, but it does not have a dedicated PCI-E power connector.

I was told that the EVGA 750 ti does not require one. So my question is would this change in GPU increase the FPS?

Answer:Wanting to upgrade

Maybe, why don`t you want to go to the 900 series ?

Much better then the 700 series.

Answer:Wanting to buy another laptop.

You don't need firewire to transfer data. You can easily do that through your router.

xp showed a message today saying that because i had made "so many changes" since installation, it now wants me to re-register! Is this normal? Its definately a legit version of xp home ed (includes service pack 2).. after having xp installed for more than a couple of yrs, i have never seen this come up before. I havent installed anything recently, although at the time i was using style xp to change default icons. Cant be bothered reregistering+ wasting a phone bill. i am not connected to the net on that pc. I have the reg number, from the back of the box, but it wants a switching on code. Any1 had this come up b4?

Answer:Xp wanting a reregister.. more than a yr later?

Yes XP will periodically check for hardware changes and if significantly different to original install will prompt you to revalidate. Its not a problem, just follow the prompts and to validate and select telephone, its an 0800 number.

Question: WinMX Help wanting

Hi, I'm new here.

I've read through other WinMX posts, but my questions aren't answered.

I just installed the latest version for the first time today. I'm running XP (Japanese) and I have ADSL with a router. I have no firewall as far as I know.

I tried downloading a few songs and a program. The songs were all in green (7 of 8 available) on the Search window, but they all appear in red after a while in my Transfer window.

The program (Bryce - is nice) is queued and appears in purple with a gradually descending number (Remotely Queued 9). I have a suspicion that when it gets to the top of the queue it will go red and not download.

So, to my questions;

- Why can't I download files that are available, and that shouldn't be very big (I had no problems with AG (RIP))?

- Are there better times of day to try downloading? Being in Japan, I wonder if the lack of available files is due to people on the dark side of the world having their machines turned off...

Thanks in advance.

Answer:WinMX Help wanting

I'd say that when you are awake we are asleep. What message do you get when your song turns red?

This may be in the wrong forum discussion, or even on the wrong website all together but I figured someone would be able to help me here.

I'm not really sure if this is possible so bare with me. I have an old hard drive laying around from my old laptop. I have an IDE adapter and I want to put this hard drive in my desktop as a secondary drive for all of my music and movies. I'm still kind of confused on setting the master and slave drive settings but that is a different topic. I want to install Windows Server on the 2nd hard drive and created a WLAN in my house for my roommates and I. Is this possible to have both Server and 7 running on the same machine? If not, I could fix up my old laptop and just use it strictly as the server. I realize that I can just set up sharing for roommates but I really want to get a server started. Any help/links with this is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Wanting to set up a server...

It is possible to put two operating systems on the same computer but you can't have them running simitanously... only one at a time.

I cant help you set the computer up... I have no problem with that... but if you are just setting up a simple server.. Windows 7 can do just that... Server is more advance.. like setting up domains.

Like how advance do you want your network to be? permissions... umm do you want homegroups ... how many computers do you have in your house? Can you give us a little more detail on your situation on your setup

Why does defrag.exe keep wanting to run.

Iam useing no diskeeping software, nor is it set as a schedualed task.

Process Guard keeps findeing it trying to run.

XPhome Sp2 all patches up todate. AVG ; Sygate Pro. ; Ewido ; A2 ; Spybot S&D ; Adawre ; CWS ; Process Guard. all run regularly.

Answer:Defrag Always Wanting To Run Lately

I wish to thank everyone for their suggestions.

It turns out it was windows doing routine house cleaning. optimizeing files when system was idle.

Actually I thought that lil task had been done away with after 98SE.

Since Proces Guard was installed and monitoring, it alerted on it. As it hadn't been run since I had locked the service. Normal behavior.

Now I did have this windows service disabled but recently did a restore and apparently those setings weren't saved and transfered.

Thanks to Gavin at wilderes security forum, he reminded me that TweakUI would disable this behavior. Located under the General tab all the way to the bottom of options. For general reference.

Once again thanks for your interest and help.
