Seagate VS WD

Question: Seagate VS WD

The title says it all, I have a choice between Seagate or WD hard drives. WD is a bit cheaper. The 2 hdd's I'm looking at are:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148142

Basically I need to know the pro's and cons of both and your preference,

any replies would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Seagate VS WD

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Seagate VS WD

little if any qualitative difference between the two, but being imformed by reputation, i'd go with seagate

Yes you can but none of those products offer a decent defragging method and defragging is not really required that much either.

Hi, trying to reformat a laptop and a re-install Windows XP. Getting the "unable to delete extended partitions while logical drives exist" message in Fdisk, but all logical drives have been erased.I don't know what make of HDD the laptop has, but am I safe to use the Seagate Disk Wizard Starter Edition to erase/zerofill the drive ready for XP to go back on?Thanks.

Answer:Using Seagate Starter Disc on Non-Seagate drive,

Might not be a good idea, as all it does is little more than FDISK or Windows XP Setup. Yes, Windows XP Setup. Simply pop the CD in the drive, restart the laptop (to boot from the CD) and it will give you a screen allowing you to choose your partitions and filing systems. For safety, use NTFS file systems. When you press the Continue key (F9 I think), it will then re-partition and format your drives for you!Howzat?

Diagnostic Tool.Ok, HDD got winxp installed fine, but I always like to check the HDD when there new so I downloaded the Seagate HDD for my SATA HDD and it will go to 99% only of the Short Diagnostic test boot from floppy. My Motherboard doesn't have SATA II and the HDD is a SATA II but there are no required jumper settings required to knock it back to 150 SataSop because it will not let me test the hdd would you suspect I have a problem with the HDD ?

Answer:Seagate ST380817AS will not test with Seagate

If XP is installed fine and you can read and write to the drive then I wouldn't worry.

Question: Seagate or WD?

Hi,

I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250 GB (ST3250820AS) installed on my Mac Pro. I've been given a Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB HDD. I was wondering if it was worth me using this WD as my main hard drive instead of the Seagate. Which is faster?

Thanks

Answer:Seagate or WD?

well as far as i can tell they're both 7200 rpm (without looking anything up) but you might not notice much difference

it depends on the caches of the drives though, the wd one might have a 16mb one (again, i'm doing this from memory) but it depends on if you want the hassle of transferring all your programs and settings over

personally i'd put the wd in the pc as a slave drive

you probably wouldn't notice much difference in access speed but both drives have the same capacity so you wouldn't benefit a whole lot from changing, really

Hello,

I am in the unenviable position of trying to keep Windows 98 SE systems alive. I want to replace my hard drive to keep the old one as a backup. I have some 80GB drives, Seagate and WD, "PATA". I suspect the BIOS does not support 80GB drives, but I am not absolutely certain. Can I have a Seagate drive and a WD drive in one machine with DDO on both? It would be the seagate flavor on the seagate drive and the WD flavor on its drive. Same company -- Ontrack -- makes both flavors. Anyone know the answer to this?

Thanks,

Question: Seagate?

Last I checked, Seagate was a very reputable company.

Is this still true?

My 2nd Seagate SATA drive failed in less than 1 year.

<_<

I'm thinking I'll RMA this, NewEgg a new WD drive, and let the new Seagate that comes in under warranty sit on the shelf...

Yep, Seagate and Samsung are both reputable HDD retailers.

Question: WD or Seagate?

i am buying a new comp and have two options for the hard drive, a 500GB Western Digital with 32 MB buffer (5400 RPM) at Rs. 3150 ($61) and a seagate 500GB with 32MB buffer (5400 RPM) at Rs. 3500 ($70). which brand is better and more reliable? the WD is cheaper, but not by much

Answer:WD or Seagate?

Everyone has their own opinion about hard drive companies. It basically comes down to which company you have had good luck with. For me that is WD (pauses to knock on wood).

Are these drives for a laptop? They are both 5400rpm. If they are for a desktop get 7200rpm drives. They will be faster.

Question: -1 Seagate

Rebooted the computer a few hours ago, heard several loud clicks followed by a thunk sound and my start-up froze at the windows XP screen...after spending about an hour trying to figure out which drive was the issue I went into my bios and found that my prized 500 drive was not being detected...pulled the cable and windows booted fine

Now then I have to figure out a way to try and salvage the data off of a drive that refuses to boot when it's plugged it and won't even show up in the bios...if anyone knows any dos based recovery tools that would be very nice

But yeah, I have no where to archive this stuff assuming I can even pull it off successfully, and although it isn't anything crucial, it still took hours and hours of downloading to get all that stuff...you start to realize that regardless of a "5 year warranty" that doesn't mean jack if you lose everything on the drive itself

I guess it's partly my fault and I should have done some reading, as we all know the larger the drive is the more platters that drive will contain and thus the more heat it will produce...in the case of Seagate drives with three or more platters, there is an issue with the controller chip within the drive frying after a duration of intensive reading and writing...therefore if you want a drive 250 or larger, I advise you avoid Seagate as they do not live up their reputation with larger drives

WD next time for me

Answer:-1 Seagate

western digital has more expensive hard drives

my computer's hard drive was 40 GB, bought 2 years ago, for $120!

now, you can get a maxtor 80GB hard drive for $50....

in my opinion, i would go for maxtor, just for the price...

I'm looking to buy a new 80-120 gb hard drive; a seagate, Western Digital, or Maxtor. Which brand should I buy? Have any of you guys had bad experiences with any of these brands?

Answer:seagate, WD, or Maxtor?

you should not really group the maxtor into that mix. out of those three brands or any other, i am almost positive it is the only manufacturer that makes an ATA133 drive.

something that crushes all of the other vanilla flavored ATA100 disks. its speed is unmatched except when talking about SATA. so if you want a fast IDE disk go maxtor. if you are looking for relaibility sacrificing speed from an IDE disk go seagate.

if you are looking at Serial ATA. . . . ask somebody else, i know next to nothing about them

I recently backed up some file with Microsoft backup onto a CDRW disk. Little did
I know at the time; Microsoft backup does not support Cdr or cdrw media. Well my
data is non retrievable even with Backup Exec which is the follow on of MS Backup.
My question is: is there a way to get my files back by disassembling the file in
some other way than using the stupid software? I have tried the upgrade, the update,
Microsoft Tech support and a few other options. So far I have had no luck. Your help
would be greatly appreciated in this matter. Thank You.

Answer:MS BACKUP (SEAGATE)

I received your e-mail as well. You should be able to use the same version of MS Backup on the same PC to restore your files from your CD-RW. Because using a product like DirectCD makes the CD-RW appear as a hard drive to MS-Backup. The keys are using the same PC, CD-RW, CD-RW software, and version of MS Backup. I do not think you can use Backup Exec, the backup file format may be different. Also did you close the CD-RW disk? Not all CD-RW drives and CD-RW software use the same format and sometimes the head alignment may vary from CD-RW drive to drive. Good luck.

Question: Seagate Backup

We are running a Windows NT 4.0 Server and we have backups scheduled to run every night using Seagate Backup Software. They have been working fine up until 2 nights ago. The backups are still pending when I get in the next morning. Anyway, I don't think it is the Tape drive because we just got a new one about 3 months ago. Besides that I cancel the pending job and start it manually and it works. An error message shows up in our Event Viewer in Windows NT and tell me that "The driver detected a controller error on \device\tape0" I have even tried putting a brand new tape in the drive and it still happens.

Answer:Seagate Backup

If you're getting a controller error. Try uninstalling the BU software and reinstalling it. It sounds like "the scheduler" portion became corrupted.

Hi 7Forums,

I probably already suspect the answer, but anyway's here goes.

Recently my PC just randomly crashed and upon restart, would not barely get past POST screen and get stuck on "Detecting IDE Drives...". I isolated the problem to my Seagate main drive. I went into diskpart and tried list disk, but the drive would not even display there. Does this mean my drive is pretty much dead?

Thanks, any help would be appreciated while I reinstall Windows.

Answer:Seagate HDD won't boot

If the BIOS doesn't recognize the drive, check it's power and data connections. Assuming they are fine and connected properly, then most likely the drive is dead. As a last ditch test, you could move the drive to another motherboard pot and/or swap the data cable, but it could likely be dead.

Hi. A while back I bought the Seagate GO Flex NAS. It has horrible software. Seagate didn't help at all.

The main problem was a sign on is required to access and use the drive. This of course made it impossible to automatically run backup software where there is typically no place to enter a sign on. With 3 PCs on my home network it requires me to manually start the backup program on each PC.

Now I see some good prices on Seagate NAS devices. I just spent some time on the Seagate site to see if these drive are more usable. I found it impossible to contact them or even get on their forum to ask the question.

Please does anyone know if these new Seagate NAS devices REQUIRE a password to access them? If not who is selling home NAS devices with the flexibility I need.

Thanks,

Bill

Answer:Seagate Central NAS

I don't use Seagate NAS devices but I have used a few over the years and they have all required a login to access them (unless I turned off login which would obviously be dodgy with a drive connected to the internet), have you set them as mapped drives ? on my system I have mapped my NAS drives and saved the password within windows so when I want to use them I double click on my Z drive and they appear and any software wishing to use them has access if required

While participating in another thread here I ran Seagate's SeaTools for Windows disk checker and discovered, rather to my surprise, that one of my two Barracudas - my data drive, not my OS drive - failed the test. I ran CHKDSK /R and that discovered 11 faulty clusters and stated that these had been added to the bad clusters record and that no further action was necessary. I took this to mean that the system would not attempt to write to or read those clusters again. I then ran the SeaTools test again expecting the drive to pass with marked bad sectors. However it failed yet again

So now I don't know whether I can trust this drive or not. Windows says it's OK, Seagate says the opposite! Any thoughts?

Answer:Who to believe - Microsoft or Seagate?

Hey Earthling...

Have you looked over the SMART data? Knowing you I am sure you have, but I just thought I would ask. With multiple bad sectors I would expect to see some pretty raunchy SMART numbers.

More or less a noob at this, but to attempt to provide an answer to your question, I guess I would say neither are my favorite, and I'm not sure I trust either one implicitly. I used SeaTools a handfull of times, and I was sort of skeptical about the results, partly because they didn't seem to match with the SMART data as I expected they would. In this case, we're talking about well used drives with mediocre SMART data and which were then reported as passing with no bad clusters in SeaTools (opposite result of your tests). The test was fast, but I just wasn't sure how thorough. Also, I didn't care for the data presentation of the software, AND I got this nagging feeling working with the program that it was at least in part designed to sell drives. I hate that from a diagnostics program. Makes me elbow sore.

That said, I think of the MS tools sort of this way. If you are satisfied MS' solutions in your OS for defragging, scheduling, and backup, then chkdsk should I think would be good enough for you. I guess that means I would say that if it hasn't been improved post XP (the OS I use), then I would say chkdsk is not for me when it's time for a real drive test or test/repair.

I am interested that you brought this up. I made a ... Read more

I am having some odd problems with a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500 GB ST3500320AS HDD that I am trying to fix for a friend of mine. Let me start the story from the beginning:

A friend of mine came to me asking me if I can fix a HDD that was failing, saying that he went to a store and they wanted to charge $350 for recovery. I told him I would give it a look over, but made no promises. He was using this internal HDD in some sort of external enclosure.

When I received the HDD from him, I placed it into my lower end machine to see what the problem was. When I connected it to my mobo and tried to power on, my PC would not power on at all. I figured the PCB on the HDD was fried. I then went to eBay and ordered an identical HDD that was having issues spinning up, but was guaranteed to have a working PCB.

When the replacement HDD arrived, I swapped the PCB and re-installed into my low end machine. The machine booted (I am running XP) and once at the desktop I saw the found new hardware balloon pop up right away. I did not close it out, but let it do its thing. When opening up my computer, I could not see the drive available to choose.

The drive can be seen from device manager, but I cannot actually access or read any files off of the drive. So I am assuming the PCB problem is fixed, but now I am wondering what the rest of the problem could be. I can see the HDD in the bios and the device manager in XP. I cannot boot from the HDD and as far as I know there is no OS installed on i... Read more

If I were in the US at this time, I would order one for trial - but I am in Germany right now. If anybody feels compelled to try one out, it would be interesting to get some experience feedback.

They are about $20 cheaper with this promo code: BTEXPWW22

Answer:New Seagate Hybrids

I'm going to be skeptical until I see proof. Hopefully someone will take the plunge and post results. Also, maybe related or not, Seagate just released their consumer and enterprise SSD's a few weeks ago.

Question: Hitachi Vs Seagate

HI I have lenevo w510, and I'm planning ot upgrade the storage to 320 GB , I need to choose either Hitachi or Seagate disk,Can you please help me which one would be better in case of reliability and performance. Cost is not a concern for me. Regards,Vijay.

Answer:Hitachi Vs Seagate

Vijaydandur, go to newegg.com and amazon.com, look up the specific drives you are considering, and look at the proportion of positive and negative user reviews. I always like to read the most negative reviews first, which gives you an idea of failure rates. For performance, type the model numbers of all the drives you're considering into one google search, and look for reviews that run performance tests on those drives.Good luck!

Hello everyone I was wondering if someone can help me with my problem. I bought a Seagate 4 Bay NAS that has 4 x 2GB Seagate Nas drives and I was setting it up as RAID 5 and was in the process of synchronizing and was at 39% and all of a sudden the power goes out The power came back on and now I have the status light and HD LED lights blink white red white red. Does this mean it will take some time to rebuild/synchronizing, or is my drive screwed? Does anyone have experience on Nas?

Thanks for your help the model number of the NAS is STCU100

i recently ordered netflix with a dvr, the installer mentioned that many people use a dvr expander to add additional space for their hdd. is this possible? and how do i go about installing it?

Answer:seagate dvr expander as hdd

If you plan on connecting one to your DVR, you may want to check with your cable provider to make sure the DVR box has the ports turned on. I know one cable company that disables them. From what I can tell you would only need to plug the USB into the DVR USB port.

If it is your DVR, you might want to check with the manufacturer to make sure this feature would work for you. I would hate to see someone spend the money and find out the DVR is not capable of using it.
((I worked at an ISP for over 10 years and the USB feature was disabled.. lots of pissed of customers))

I'm considering a new harddrive, but until I ran across an attractive offer for the 1.5TB, I had been thinking of the 1TB instead. The larger drive has the following specs:

Formatted Capacity : 1.5TB
Interface Type: Serial ATA-300
Buffer Size: 32MB
Spindle Speed: (RPM) 5900 RPM
Average Latency: 4.16 ms
Data Transfer Rate: Buffer to Host Up to 300MBps
Sustained Throughput: Up to 115MBps
Ports and Connectors: 7-pin Serial ATA Connector
Manufacturer Warranty: 5 Year Limited Warranty

The thing that stands out in my eye is that the spindle speed is slow compared to the 1TB, which is 7200 RPM, but I think the warranty is a bit longer.

I recall recently reading an article posted in the forums news board that said that the 1 TB was the fastest drive in it's class, but the sustained throughput of this drive is slightly faster...I think.

The extra 500GBs would definitely be a plus, but would it really perform as well as the 1TB? Is there any other aspect to consider?

Answer:Seagate 1.5TB Harddrive

that...is an odd RPM value for a HD

wondering if anyone know if its possible because i have it on a 7200RPM HDD at the moment and its slow as hell to boot plus because the boot is on the hard drive its always running and would rather it idle

If not then i might have to get an SSD

also I have hard drives with information on the other bays at the moment in a JBOD (Not linked to drive 1) If do change the boot to usb or SSD will the other drives still show up on the new boot up nas (EG. if i have a NTFS HDD in my pc i could put it in another PC and it would work and access all the files)

Any one using the Seagate Momentus XT drive? I have just done a clean install of Windows  x64 and loaded all the lenovo drives etc.For the most part the drive is quick and great. However I am getting random crashes (BSOD) that only happen with this drive.I seem to be able to reproduce it if I use Raxco disk defrag or Norton Ghost to back up the drive. What's strange is that the backup crashes in the last 5 seconds (no idea what it's doing then) I can take the same image onto a standard disk drive and it works great without any crashes. Any ideas please ?

Answer:Seagate Momentus XT

I'm having similar issues as well.  Corrupted data especially in the windows system files and program files.  So far my data seem okay.  I imaged my original drive onto the XT.  The image transferred fine but after a day or so I noticed that sometimes the harddrive light won't turn off and the computer hangs.  Next time I boot a file or system error occurs.  I was thinking I had a bad drive, but now I'm wondering of compatibility issues.

Ok so recently have upgraded to Windows & Ultimate on a Samsung HDD, and copied ALL necessary information that i needed to a Seagate HDD before the format. The Seagate was formatted on the XP install with NTFS, and data copied to it. Now after the install the primary(Samsung works fine), but the Seagate where all my information is does not come up in my computer. At start up, it does pick up both drives, and in Device manager it says( ST9120822AS SCSI Disk), and in Disk Manager, it does show, and is healthy and says something like backup partion/recovery partition or something to that effect, but there is no drive letter. When I right click on the drive the only thing that comes up is Help, no option to assign a drive letter. The Seagate drive capacity shows 111,9/120 Gigs, which means there is data there.

Now I did have the motherboard drivers but those didn't have anything for windows 7, as it came out later, and i did install them. I have recently downloaded the drivers and will install them when I get home. If the drivers aren't an issue what could it be?

Answer:Seagate Drive Not Available

Hello Vengeful and welcome to the Forum. You might see if this will work:Plug in the external hard drive
Open Device Manager
Expand the USB list
Find the USB device for your USB Hard Drive (in my case it was the one that had no description)
Right mouse click > Uninstall
Unplug external hard drive and restart computer
Plug external hard drive back in and let Windows 7 find/install the driver
See if external hard drive is recognized/works.
Another possibility:

1. Plug in the external USB hard drive
2. Right mouse click on Computer
3.Left click on Manage
4.Double click on Storage
5.Double click on Dick Management
6.Disk 0 is Hard Drive Partitions
Disk 1 will display the SIZE of the external device with no name
7. Right mouse click the BLUE BAR on Disk 1
8.Left click on Mark Partition as Active
9.Left click on Change Drive Letter and Paths
10.Right click the “Add” button - Right click OK
11. The external USB device should now have a drive letter

I have been trying to figure this out for two days now... I have a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 500Gb external that I can not get my laptop to recognize in any way.
I have used this hard drive on many different computers with different OS's recently with no problems.
I have tried 4 different USB cables, checked all USB drives to make sure they are operating correctly, the HD is functioning normally, no strange sounds, not running hot, lighting up correctly, etc.
The computer does not react in any way when the HD is plugged in to the USB, nor does the HD show up in any way in My Computer, Computer Management, etc. It's like it just doesn't exist!
I know that the cords I've tried are good (they work for other items), I know that the HD worked perfectly fine on my friend's computer with XP a few days ago, but would not work on a different computer with XP a couple days before that (exact same problem, not detected in any way). I have not been able to test it on my bf's laptop running XP as we just moved and his power cord is currently MIA.
I am running 7 and am sure this is the problem... I just don't know how to resolve it without the HD being detected in SOME way!
I have been searching for solutions and tried many different ways of locating it on the computer, but will take any suggestions anyone has... I have a hard time believing this HD is broken when it hasn't given me any other signs of a problem...

Answer:Seagate HD not detected

Hi,

Im using the same drive on Windows 7 Ultimate without any problem, so I don't think the issue is Windows 7.

I'm not sure from your post whether you have done this, but have you tried other USB ports on the computer? Or is that what you meant by "checked all USB drives"?

Having bought a new Seagate Barracuda 120G HD a friend who is very knowledgable about computers attempted to configure this as my Master drive, retaining my existing Maxto 60G as the slave with all contents still onboard. The idea being to delete OS software from the Maxtor and then transfer all existing files to Seagate after having loaded same with OS software. All went well but the Seagate seemed very slow and when trying to access the Maxtor an error message popped up stating an I/O error and would not access the Maxtor, also saying the Maxtor was empty. We ended up disconnecting the Seagate, reverting back to the Maxtor and seeking help. Anybody got any ideas??????

Answer:Seagate HD as Master

Why not add it as a slave?Unless it is SATA or is otherwise significantly faster, there is no real advantage in it being master.Did you check that the jumpers are correct on both? Ie the new one now as master and the old one as slave. If they are both as slave or both master or even both on cable select there can be errors.

I bought a 1 TB barracuda seagate drive about 4-5 months ago. My wife recently alerted me to a warning windows 7 popped up saying that the drive was failing and I should back everything up on the drive (I haven't been home much lately, been sequestered away studying).

I use the drive for media (movies, pictures, music, etc) and have 3 other HD's on the computer (all maxtors). 1 running the OS, 1 I run games from and 1 that back up images and files too.

I ran a scan on the drive with windows (strangely seatools isn't detecting any of my maxtor drives or the seagate ones ) and it did not note anything wrong with it. So I downloaded HD tune pro (the trial) and took a look at the drive. Under Reallocated sector count it shows 30 bad, 30 as the minimum (before it sets of the alarm? I am not sure minimum what), and 36 as threshold (again not sure what threshold is for). The status is listed as 'failed' and it says 2882 damaged sectors that have been replaced. HD tune pro's advice is the drive is imminently going to fail.

I've had the displeasure of losing hard drives before. This drive isn't acting anything like a drive with hardware errors. It isn't sluggish. Files on it weren't corrupted. It wasn't making funny noises, etc So was thinking this might be some kind of logical error and not an actual hardware fault?

So I zerofilled the drive last night and ran a chkdsk /r on it today. The chkdsk shows 0 bad sectors. Howeve... Read more

Yes, I finally got an external hard drive and yes, the back ups to cd were incomplete and grossly neglected.

But now what? It came with no software. Should I go to start, then go to explore, then drag individual files into the external hard drive shown in that same window?

My biggest concern is my husband's e-mail. He uses Outlook 2000 sr1 9.0 from Office 2000 small business. I would like to upgrade to Office 2003, but i need to back up all of his e-mail (including the inbox, sent, and address book) first, then be clear on how to transfer it to the new program.

It would also be nice if I could save my verizon's msn dsl program settings.

Hello everyone

I'm a little perplexed over what to do with my Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB hard drive.

I bought it on 11-11-2002 so I have only 10 days until the warranty runs out.....

The drive was a beauty - pretty quick and oh so quiet - and totally reliable - until around 3 or 4 months ago when i got my 1st bad sector. After that I received a handful of warnings from my bios that S.M.A.R.T status was BAD & the drive should be replaced - and another bad sector.
Indeed running Seagate's Seatools diagnostic software confirmed my drive was bad & needed replacing.

It took me a while to manage the cash for a replacement as my reseller would not ship a replacement in advance.

3months later....

So With a new IBM/Hitatchi 180GXP 120GB, I transferred all of my data safely to the new drive (phew).

I checked again and seatools confirmed the drive had physical defects and needed replacing.
Before returning the drive I thought it common sense to write zeros to the drive, which I did with Seagate's Discwizard software.

Then I ran seatools again to check the error message & guess what......?
.........."NO PROBLEMS FOUND"
So did an intensive diagnostic - and again no problems.

Ok then - so I can't send it back now if its coming up fine - they'll probably just send it back to me!

So reformatted & set it up as a second drive just for storage/backup. Ran a full scandisc - fine. Even the bad sectors seem to have disappeared.

When i try to copy my files to another hdd, it says Data error (cyclic redundancy check). Please help me as there are some important files on my hdd.

Answer:SEAGATE problem..

It could be caused by a improperly installed data cable or just a bad cable. Make sure the cable is fully seated at the drive and motherboard. If that does work try replacing the data cable. See if that resolves your CRC problems.

Recently picked up a Seagate ST3400620A.  It didn't do this while formatting it after install, but now, when the computer is idle, it makes an odd noise - all hard drives usually have just a steady hum, this one the pitch kind of increases, drops back to a steady hum, then increases again, ever so slightly, then back to a steady hum - usually I've come to think this is a sign of a mechanical defect of some sort but I find that hard to believe with a fresh out of the box unit - also, another seagate (not a new one) that I borrowed from a friend several months ago did the same undulating hum thing - any ideas as to what's actually wrong?

7.Netgear 10/100 network
8.56k modem
9.64mb Geforce2 gts Hercules tv-out
10.X gamer sound card creative

Here's what I have done:
1. Used a win98 boot disk to start up
2. bios recognized cdrom, used 98 disk, it asked for 3.1 disks to recognize that I had bought previous version of windows but it didn't install disks first just installed 98 straight without dos.
3.I installed all the drivers for all the components successfully except the hrd drive.
4.It says under question mark "PCI Mass Storage Controller" although under disk drives it says ,"generic disk type 00"
5.Also as a side note, I think not installing 3.1 first messed it up, a few basic functions of windows are gone (annoying but everything works). the windows folder actually says windows.000 I think that has something to do with it.
7.It started out with FAT format for c drive I converted it to FAT32.
7.The seagate drive came with a cd that has some disk manager thing thats supposed to help install it. but I think I did something wrong from the start. I can burn my whole drive because it is less than 1.99 gig right now and start over. but id like it to be a driver prblem or something.

I just received my replacement 1TB Barracuda HDD ST31000528AS from Seagate and would ask what you guys would recommend to changing this the most painless / quickest and efficient way.

It would be nice to image or clone thie older drive which when I ran Seatools gave me failures in the short and long term tests.

I would like to use my existing Hard Drive that will get sent back to Seagate, which has all the current win 7 home premium updates etc. Plus everything else that I recently copied over from my external drive: acount settings from MS Outlook etc.

Please note that my existing drive is partitioned C and D at 50% each and would be nice to reduce the C 50% as D drive is my Data drive... is this ratio a good one?

If you can give me step by step instructions from installing the drive and what software to use etc.

Once I have successfully copied the drive to the new one, what is the best way to completely clean the drive, prior to sending back to Seagate.

Thanks,

Hola,
I don't see a similar question already posted here. So... I don't get this (sigh). I just got done messing w/a second seagate hard drive. It, & the first, refuses to format. Seagate's down-loadable utilities has failed both drives (generic short & long tests). I tried Seagate's DOS utility too, but it wouldn't load @reboot. Windows XP recognizes this drive (the first was a struggle). It simply won't do anything w/it. It formats up to 100%. Then, prompts that it was unable to complete the formatting. My WD master's jumpers are reset correctly. Enabled in BIOS, yadda, yadda. Before I return another drive through UPS. Is there something I'm missing? From what I see in customer' comments, many people are having problems w/ATA drives. According to the BBB, Seagate is taking a lot better care of customers than WD is. Apparently, WD has gone downhill quite a bit over the past two years. Any sage advice, oh Gurus?

Home-built system: ASUS Mobo. P4 chip, Assorted schtuff. XP Home/sp3. System has been up for about seven years. Sure wish I'd bought a second WD HDD @the time. It's been great. Thank You.

Just figured I'd share that lil tidbit of praise Click to expand...

oh man you jinxed it now

hey weird problem, i tried d/l'ing Seatools yesterday, the 1.44 fdd version, when you go to put it on the floppies it only loads one disk, its suppose to be a 2 disk program, it loads one and exits, also the drive i'm trying to run the diganostic tools on just freezes in the middle of the test. I can run whatever test is the online one and it comes up with drive is ok etc. but the CD or the floppy tools just freeze and have to reboot. The CD version of Seatools runs fine on my other seagate drive, whats up with this, never had that happen on a drive before.

Question: maxtor or seagate?

I have to choose between a maxtor HD and a seagate. they are both pretty much the same.

Maxtor / DiamondMax 10 / 300GB / 7200 / 16MB / SATA-150 / OEM / RoHS Compliant (Maxtor supports the EU directive for Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS))

Seagate SATA 300gig 7200rpm 16mb 5yr Warranty

which one should I pick?

Answer:maxtor or seagate?

I've always favored Maxtor, but a 5-year warranty is very tempting.

Hello again. Despite the good advice from auggiedoggie and studiot last time, I splashed out for a Seagate Freeagent 500Gb external HDD. This was my whole backup ie about seven years worth of correspondence, photos,, scanned official forms etc. Due to inattention when using Paragon Hard Drive Manager, I have managed to delete the partition. It is now inaccessible. Does anyone out there know how to resurrect it? Paragon HDM says it can't undelete the partition and Seagate are asking GBP400-600 (or USD$800-$1200) to recover it for me. Happy Holidays by the way to all the community.

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if this is normal. I have a brand new seatgate 120 gig hd in my computer because my old hd died. I have installed it and noticed that iit runs much warmer than the old one did. So just now, i went to everest just to be on the safe side to make sure its not overheating or anything and it appears to have a thermostat for itself and according to everest it is running a steady 106 F. Im not sure if it is overheating or if it is just a warmer running temp. If someone can tell me what is going on it would be great. The drive is 7200 rpm and the old one i think was 5400. So it is a faster drive. But im not sure if that temperature is normal or not.
thanks for all help in advance
-the new tech guy

I bought a 250GB Seagate USB 2.0 external hard drive to free up my internal HD. XP does not seem to like it. I have copied many small files to the new drive with no problem. However I just tried to copy some large video files to it without success. The external drive has 230GB free. However when I try to copy a 12.4GB file from my system to the external HD, XP tells me there is not enough room and that I should delete files beore trying again. There is plenty of room on th external HD and XP has got it wrong.  The weird thing is that when I right click on the external drive's icon and view it's properties, XP tells me there is 230GB free. How can I solve this problem?

Answer:Seagate ext HD + XP problem

What file system is the external drive?FAT32, which most drives come formatted as, has a file size limit. If I were you, I'd reformat it using NTFS - right click on the drive in Windows Explorer, choose Format, then choose NTFS for the file system.Make sure Quick Format is not checked too. This will take a while with a large drive, my external 250Gb took around an hour or two.Hope this helps.

I have a dell computer with windows 7. I just bought a 1TB Seagate Backup Plus plugged it in ,and so far its not showing up in explorer. I went to the site and followed some instructions about going to my computer clicking manage ,but from there I'm lost. Wondering if anyone could give me any ideas thanks

Answer:Seagate Backup Plus

It may not be formatted out of the factory which means Windows won't recognise it...Right clik it in Disk Management and select Format...choose NTFS and let it run...Re-boot and it'll work fine.

I bought this Seagate 120GB HDD in November 2006 & in February the fan stopped. All my precious photos are on it. Seagate will replace the unit but quote EUR1,200 for recovery !

http://www.gearhack.com/Forums/Displ...tar_Screw.html

I am struggling to find this 5 point torx security screwdriver, & where I do see it referenced, the screwdriver costs more than this bloody HDD !

Is there a simpler way to open this without busting it open (or spending USD100 on a screwdriver), as I would like to get to the hard drive, get data back, & then get Seagate to replace the unit.

Any ideas ?

Answer:How to open a Seagate Ext HDD

http://www.amazon.com/Torx-Driver-Security-Small-Sizes/dp/B0002SPICU

Not sure where you are, I assume somewhere in Europe, take a look here.
http://amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_w_h...s=aps&field-keywords=torx&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go
In case that doesn't work a search for 'torx' on amazon.co.uk turns up many cheap torx drivers.
I got a mini screwdriver, that holds 8 torx bits for around $13 USD

A torx bit looks like a star, or is 6 pointed.

If it is a torx security bit it has an extra bump in the center of the screw, so the driver has a small hole or grove to fit over this bump.
http://amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_w_h...ld-keywords=torx+security&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go
search for torx security on amazon.co.uk they cost a little more than regular torx bits, but no where near 100$ USD
Hopefully running with out the fan since February hasn't damaged the disk.

I am switching to from PC Windows XP to new iMac and plugged my Seagate External drive into the new Mac. It told me I needed to do some prep work and first offload all of the drive to my old PC before reinitializing with the iMac.

PROBLEM: When I plug it into the old PC to do the offload, it recognizes that a drive is attached but doesn't welcome home an old friend. Rather, it asks me if I want to format. WHOA.

How do I get the old PC to recognize the external drive it grew up with?

How do I get around this "DO YOU WANT TO FORMAT? screen and get to the data on the hard drive. The drive was working fine last it was used in recent weeks. Thanks, Craig

Question: Seagate backup

Hi,
Hi to everyone and thanks for reading my post.
I have a laptop running vista and an external seagate back up. I would like to back up my laptop with system info, contacts and whatever else it may back up. The problem is I would like to see what is backed up like my pictures, videos, movies so I can plug the seagate into tv and watch movies that are on it. Everything on the seagate has dates from the back up, not actual files that I can see. also I change my pictures often so I would like to back them up more often than the other stuff.
often. I hope this makes since. Again thanks for reading this,
Chug

Answer:Seagate backup

what windows version are your running
a lot of programs backup into a single compressed file
i prefer the full files to be seen separately on the backup myself

windows 8 has a file backup system which will backup the files individually and also allow you to plug the device into another system and see them

also a piece of software I often install in not free - quite in-expensive called second copy - which you can set to backup at any frequency you want
although I have not tried it - but I think the windows 8 backup works the same way

Often TVs want a media server to play files

Have you tried a different USB cord by chance ?
Also make sure the USB cable is laid down straight.
With no splits or cuts on it that will be one way for windows not detech it.

I have had this drive for about 6 months, yesterday it started to hang while playing video files but it passes all the Seagate tests. So I'm not really sure what to do now.

Here is a video of the lockup while I was transferring files off of it in order to reformat it.

And here is a video with the noise it makes when the lockup occurs

Thanks for any help.

Ok, slide your mouse on the right side of the screen and click search.
Type event view logs and hit enter, now look at the tabs and find system logs and windows error logs.
Look at yesterdays timeline and today, did windows mention anything about a disk drive error ?
If it has a exclamation by it its mean the drive is having problems.
If its a red x and its consistent like every hour oe 2 hours daily.
You will need to get your drive rmaed, give us the hard drive model number.

I checked your videos and the file transfer look pretty speedy.

Question: Seagate FreeAgent

Lost the ability to load FreeAgent after it was unplugged from usb before it was "Removed"... Won't start up. light wont turn on. Computer wont even recognize that its there...it's not much but all that i hold dear is on that external hard drive... have i lost it all... and al i even in the right place for this??? new at this... thank u

Answer:Seagate FreeAgent

If the light won't turn on and you are sure you have all power connections secure, then either the power supply or the enclosure is bad, or possibly the disk inside the enclosure. If you have a volt meter, you may be able to test the enclosure's power supply.

WARNING: Performing the instructions below may void your warranty.

I recommend you remove the drive from its enclosure and connect it internally as a secondary drive to a desktop computer. See if it works there. If it does, your data recovery problem is solved. If not, then you may have a failed hard disk.

I recently upgraded from Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional. The problem I am having is that my Seagate Freeagent 1TB drive wont load in Windows 7. I have to keep going to Device Manager and Uninstalling the driver and then plugging it back in so it automatically installs itself and then when I shut down the computer I have to do the process again.

I thought things that worked with Windows Vista were supposed to work with Windows 7.

Any solutions or help on this problem would be appreciated. PS I have already tried insalling newer drivers, I have the latest ones, and I know this is a software issue as I am able to access the drive as normal after re-installing it each time.

So any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Seagate Freeagent 1TB

First, welcome to the SevenForums

I assuming (since your specs are limited) that this HDD is a USB device. If so, I know of several people with the same problem. There is at this time no fix is available other then to turn it off prior to starting your computer then turning it back on once your system is up and running. Not sure why this happens only that it does, and there are several other HDDs that do the same thing. Some of Western Digital's HDD Books USB HDDs do the same thing. Not sure if it is Microsoft's fault or a driver problem yet unsolved by the HDD manufactures—your guess is as good as. . .
