what is this folder with SPX.CAB file inside?

Question: what is this folder with SPX.CAB file inside?

We are supporting business offices systems running Windows 7 SP1 in 64 bit. System RAM is 16GB and HD is 200GB.
In one of the partition (Drive F), a folder appeared (Aug 19, 2015), the folder name is 973d3e99d0b18144c2ffb4c55570d78a (we can change it to junk or some such). Inside it has a cabinet file called SFX.CAB created same date and file size is 0.
Can you please tell me what this is? and should we remove it?
Thank you

Preferred Solution: what is this folder with SPX.CAB file inside?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,
I have a couple of computers set up in the network. They're all inside the same workgroup.
Every folder I share is visible by everyone.
Now I want to define permissions on only one folder which containes files only to be editable (modified) by, let say, one computer.
So I need to define special peermissions for this particular folder.
However I came accros to a problem. In network neighbourhood I can see all computers and their share folder and they see my shared files. But when I want to define special permissions on only one folder (one user can write and read, the rest is read only access), I cannot see other computers in the "Select user or groups" window just as shown in the attached picture.

One friend of mine told me that this is only possible when computers are on domain. It is really hard for me to understand that permissions cannot be defined for each folder and for each network user separately.

Can you give me any advice?

Thanks

Answer:File and folder permissions inside workgroup

Permissions are configured for local users on the machine, not network users or machines.

If I encrypt the folder of a software accounting program on my hard drive using windows 7 pro 64 bit, can I backup only my data file to an external flash drive? If so, what steps would be necessary to restore that file in the accounting program?

Hello, We have gone to the website

and download the file to open Inside of IE. Once the file is open, none of the links either e-mail or web site works. However, if we open the same file Inside of Google Chrome, the links work. So, we want to know if we are missing something in IE or a plugin.
The PDF file opens with no problem but the links are not enabled. The file works in an Apple Machine and Google Chrome. However, if we download the file physically inside of the computer and then open the file with Adobe Reader, the links all work! Any ideas
how to solve this issue? Thanks Miguel Moreno

very strange problem.

i have a folder on my desktop that used to be called "c++ programs" and has since been renamed to "goaway" (since it won't)

inside this folder which is located at C:\Users\bert\Desktop\goaway is a folder called C:

when i click it it brings me back to just C:\ - it acts like a shortcut - but it isn't! its my actual C drive. when i try to delete "goaway" it starts to send terabytes of data to my recycle bin. i CANNOT delete this folder! when i try, it will delete all that stuff and wipe most of the stuff from my C drive (which is.. uh.. important).

i went to cmd and cd'd to ~/goaway, and pressed Dir thinking its some sort of weird linking problem. heres a ss of the results:

(don't know why the image is all weird, thats just what tinypic did)

can anyone help me delete this forsaken folder? please help!

Hi

I have a strange problem, I can`t seem to fix.
I have a shared folder with many sub folders.
If I access this from another computer, it just shows some of
the folders (ex: of 120 it shows 15).
For another folder on the same server, with the same setup, it`s
not at problem.

I have checked the sharing permissions, and all of them are the same
on both shared folders.

All run Win 7 Ultimate.
Router: TP-Link TL-WR941ND, with DD-WRT v24-sp2 (11/21/10) std - build 15778
Server connected with cable, laptop via WiFi. (But tried with cable on both,
no difference)
All use Windows Firewall and Security Essentials.

And this are the same problem on all computers that's trying to open that folder.

This all happened after a reinstall of Windows.
Kindly

Petter

Hi member and the experts,

I actually found the same thread with mine but the previous thread was created 2007 and wasn't solved.

So just like the title, there is a duplicate folder inside the folder. Tried to remove it manually, but it kept coming back once I restart my laptop. I am using ACER Aspire 2920 & Windows Vista in it.

I got this problem since 2008 when a friend tried to setting something (and I didn't know what it was) and it isn't recovered until today (hope it isn't too late to fix it up) *pray to God*

The previous thread suggested to do a scanning using HJT and I did.

I truly wish someone can really help me with it. Thanks in advance!

Hello all

I have a music folder, and I can't create new folders in it. (My own folder on my E drive, nothing to do with the Windows supplied my music folder.) I get a you need permission warning.

Now. I am listed as the owner of the Music folder. I did the Take Ownership registry trick (from these forums) a while back and ran it on Music. I have also used the security dialog on the folder to specifically assign myself and also checked the "update sub stuff" check box (can't remember what it really saiud, but you experts know the one). I also run explorer as admin using the usual Run as Admin option on the icon to launch it.

Even with all this - I can't create new folders in Music. Some of you might have heard me scream nasty things about Win7's mother today. I'm getting annoyed. Please help a poor soul.

Thanks.

I'm hoping someone here has experience with the software Folder Lock and can help me, or they can figure out intuitively whats wrong from the error message I get.

After restarting my computer, when I try to open folder lock i get this message:

"There is already a ‘Locker’ folder inside the application path. Please move any other folder other than the ‘Locker’ folder to another location and then try again to access your secured files."

I navigated to the program files->folde Lock directory and there is no Locker folder there. I even moved every folder out except for the executable and that made no difference (a desperate move.) Final move was to upgrade to the most recent version of the software, but that didn't change the error message.

There are important files locked inside of folder lock, and i'm screwed at work if i can't figure out whats wrong!

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Suddenly failed to find a large folder of Word documents.
Search discovered the original folder inside a minor folder on the same partition of the master HD. The folder is complete with several sub folder also OK.
During my search I noticed (using My Computer)that when listing a drive or folder, most of the titles of folders and some files seem dimmed almost out though they can be opened.
Using XP pro SP3 everything up to date as far as I know
Cut and paste still work, but the odd fading of most but not every item in lists and the inexplicable cause of this ... worry me a lot!

Answer:One folder has moved inside another

Make a backup copy of your documents - quick :)

Hello all , i am new to batch programming.

I wish to have a batch file to read .apk file from folder and then copy it to another folder. Then it should rename the copied apk file to test.apk

eg:
i have a file in folder e:\apps\angrybirds.apk , I want to copy this angrybirds.apk to d:\apps and rename it to test.apk

Here the file names in the e:\apps\ will be changing. So what ever may be the name , it should read the name of the file from e:\apps\ folder , copy it to d:\apps\ and rename it to "test.apk" . Test.apk is a fixed rename

I have a new laptop with Win7 HP x64. I wonder why I can't drag files around inside a folder - it is very useful to be able to move files around and then rename them, so changing the order of the files there. On my other PC as I drag the files I get a vertical black line and the file then stays where I put it. On the laptop, they won't move from their alphabetical/numerical order.

Have Googled this and see that many seem to fix this with the Esc key - doesn't work for me. Dragging and dropping is enabled in the start menu customisations. My UAC is off (turning it on doesn't help) and I have tried toggling click-lock on the mouse. All in vain.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Martin

I have several media folders with lots of large jpg, bmp and mp4 files stored on a USB Stick.

If I plug the stick in on another computer it takes a very long time until all the thumbnails for the files are generated.

I want to plug in the stick and see the thumbnails for all the media files immediately.

is there a way to store the cached thumbnail information right inside a folder to make it "portable"?

If there is no native solution, I would be grateful for other suggestions.

Dear All,
I'm unable to run any bat file with "Run As Administrator" when the bat file is present in a folder which has ( in its name.
For example: I have main.bat which is in d:\test(_8july)\main.bat.
The contents of main.bat is like this.

c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe /C "e:\test.bat"

The contents of test.bat is like this:

echo "testing" >> %temp%/test.txt
pause

If I just double click on main.bat, i can see the file text.txt being created and "testing" written into it.
If i right click on main.bat and select "Run as Administrator", the bat file cannot be run and I get the error "d:\test" is not a recognized command.
How to handle these situations?

Thanks in advance
Raghu

Answer:Run as administrator not working for bat files inside folder having (

I recommend you remove the ( and ) characters from the folder names and see if the .bat files then work. If so, then maybe the simple answer is to avoid using those characters in folder names and then you won't have the problem. From the message, it looks like the first ( cuts off the command at that point which is why it fails.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

I've searched for this topic but can't find it anywhere on the forum, I hope I've not missed it.

Is it possible to create a template for a folder which contains three other folders inside it?

I want to create a folder called 'Work' which contains three other folders called 'links', 'images' and 'complete'.

I get work emailed to me as an attachment and would like to be able to save all attachments to a generic 'work' folder, then rename it and save it to my work directory.

I appreciate it's unlikely, but if anyone could assist I'd be grateful.

Hi, I know the topic sounds peculiar, but hear me out.

In Vista there was the possibility to move a file or folder to a different position inside of the same folder. That is no longer possible for Windows 7 or 10.
Say I have files A-H: In Vista I could drag the file with the letter H between file A and B, even if the general order is set to alphabetically.

Now the files are "locked" ; and I can't move them if I temporarily want to have two folders or files to be neighbours. I have to change their names for that.

Is there any way for 7 or 10  to "unlock" this? Or a different programm that offers this feature?

Answer:Move files inside of the current folder

Here's a fix for you.

Hey everyone,

It's been years since I posted here but I'm back with a problem. I have recently set up a media server in my basement which houses all the movies, TV shows, etc that my housemates and I have collectively downloaded/ripped in the last several years. On the 2 TB drive inside this server, most of the movies are in one folder (D:\Movies) but a few movies are in another folder (D:\Other) for various reasons (mostly sorting). Using another compter on the network, in D:\Movies, we had created shortcuts to the movies in D:\Other so that they all appear in the same list despite being in different folders. These shortcuts used the following information:

Target: "\\BJMServ-PC\2TB\Other\<movie file>"

Start in: \\"BJMServ-PC\2TB\Other"

Some computers (Win 7 and Win XP) on the network can use these shortcuts properly, and the movies open up without a hitch, while others (all Win 7/8, not sure if that's relevant) cannot use the shortcuts. On the machines where the shortcuts don't work, for some reason their "Target" line is BLANK and greyed out to prevent editing. My question is why do these shortcuts work on some machines (both the Win 7 used to create them, as well as another Win XP machine) with the target line reading "\\BJMServ-PC\2TB\Other\<movie file>", while on other machines the shortcuts don't work? Is there any way to fix them or should I just put all my movies in one folder... Read more

Answer:Shortcuts inside shared folder don't work

"\\BJMServ-PC\2TB\Other\<movie file>"Click to expand...

this form requires that all systems resolve the BIOS names for all others on your LAN.

try this:
find the IP address of one target and create the link "\\theIPaddress\2TB\Other\<movie file>"

if that's satisfactory, then you can create fixed addresses for any system that contains shared media
by using the router Address Reservation; the tartget MAC address of the tcp nic is used to reserve a constant IP address for it.

That then allows you to create shortcuts like \\theIPaddress\2TB\Other\<movie file>

Greetings! I'm new here. Sadly, my first message is forced to be a plea for help, as my PC has been compromised.

I. What I'm ExperiencingNo Folder Options: This looks very familiar, as I've had the problem before. But I'm not sure how my brother fixed it, and so here am I. An offshoot of this is, of course, hidden files remain hidden and cannot be uncovered (as far as I know).
Automatic shutdown when I log in: I'm currently using another user account (not my infected one) which doesn't have the problem. The shutdown is the kind that says an important system component, or the like, has been terminated, at which point a 60 second timer begins.
Shutting down, logging off, restarting result in premature shutdown: it skips the "Windows is shutting down" screen, only showing the wallpaper devoid of desktop icons and the start bar. It looks an awful lot like when I manually reset.
Many strange processes in Task Manager: I'd take glances at the list of processes every now and again to get a sense of what should be there before infection. Now I see numerous processes that I don't recognize, such as: killer.exe, mmx572.exe (or 369, etc.)
Spam email is being sent constantly to bogus addresses: When the problems started, I reinstalled Symantec Norton Antivirus 2006 to try and fix it (more on this below). One of its services is the scanning of incoming and outgoing email. When this is turned on, my screen is filled with Norton notifying me of 5, 10, 20 emails being s... Read more

Hello dear people of the Internet,
I've stumbled accross something I cannot solve at all. there is 1 folder which cant be changed/deleted nor anything inside or any other action. here are the errors
After Pressing Continue

Even tho Im the admin and the only user on this PC,
I tried to change the Permissions but this happens like a billion times for each thing inside the folder

Answer:Unable to take any action to a folder nor folders inside

Welcome to TenForums @FufflesPL

This is probably due to the permissions you are trying to change being inherited permissions. Try higher up where the permissions are being inherited from. Possibly as far up as:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam

I want to ungroup all my files and folders present on computer with a single click or button or option to choose.Somehow, someone changed the "group by" option of my files and folders from none to group by "type" & "ascending".

I want to ungroup them to none but the problem is that there are some folders in my PC that contain many folders inside folder(i.e. subdirectories) and i've to manually ungroup each of these folder.

Ain't there any option that can ungroup folder and files inside a folder as well or more specifically all the files on my PC.

Any solution or suggestion please!

Do anyone have an idea how (if possible) you password protect a folder in Outlook 2003 - like a subfolder to the Inbox.

Appreciate your help.

Answer:Password protect folder inside Outlook 2003?

You can't, per se, block a subfolder.

What you can do, however, is create a seperate Outlook datafile and use password protected encryption. Have outlook not store the password, and then you'll have to enter the password on each startup of Ol2003. Do note, however, that outlook doesn't always close fully when you exit, so it may not just be a matter of exit, but restarting the machine after exiting before it'll prompt the password again.

I'll check this the next time I can.

Hi everyone!

I am quite surprised that there is a folder named by 'Downloads' inside the 'public documents' folder. whenever I deleted it, I saw it recreated again after logging in.
I don't know what this folder is for, and how I can get rid off it.
I really tried restoring many system points created before installed many programs, driver software and windows updates. One oldest of them managed me to get rid off this folder. However, this restoration got my system back to very older point, so I would need to reinstall all program, drivers, and updates again. However, I don't want to do this.
Besides, I couldn't even know what creates this folder after restoration.
The most strange thing is that 'downloads' folder is created inside the 'public documents' folder and not 'public downloads' folder as it should have been.

Answer:There is a folder named by 'Downloads' creating inside the 'public doc

It's just part of how Windows 7 works. I have it as well.

In one of my Windows 7 Libraries, I have a folder 'A'. When I click to open it, another folder 'B' opens. When I click on 'B', the real folder I need, 'C' opens. It is only 'C', that contain my files. A and B are empty folders. The result is that I have to make three clicks to get at my files. This mishap occurred when I was re-arranging my files and folders, probably due to finger trouble!

Could you please help me remove A and B.

I would move the files in the "c" folder to a new temp folder on the desktop, then delete the tree, B C folders. Now the top level folder A should be empty, move the files there and remove the desktop folder.

Hello aakriti, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you are getting this message when you try to open the Briefcase, then see if downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed Briefcase option in the tutorial below may help.

If this is for an image file instead, then download and merge the .reg file for that file extension instead.

hey, what you must have done is drug it over there by accident, as you can see it is still located were it is supposed to be further below, all you did was add a link to it. so you can safely erase the link, or ignore it, its up to you.

Hi!
Any applications which give me a save dialog box don't allow me to save inside my user folder, for example saving an .ai file in Adobe Illustrator or an OBJ file from Cinema 4D. This started after updating to build 10240. When saving, I receive the error

Code:
C:\Users\Spencer\Documents\Adobe\ai\test.ai
You don't have permission to save in this location.
Contact the administrator to obtain permission.

Would you like to save in the Documents folder instead?

the "would you like to save in the documents folder" section changes based on the program, for example paint asks me if I'd like to save in pictures instead. However, the base folder Spencer\Documents\ doesn't allow me to save either and gives me the same error. I can only save in C:\Users\Spencer, folders before that (for example C:\) and other folders such as the AppData, but none of my libraries.

Additionally, I can move the files from my user folder to the correct folder using Windows Explorer, but that's about it.

Has anyone else been receiving this issue, or is anyone aware of a way I can fix this issue? I've already tried restarting my computer a couple times but I'm not sure what else I could do.

Thanks!

EDIT: I forgot to add that I am on the ONLY account on the system, which is an Administrator account.

Answer:Apps will not save files inside User folder.

I just created a Folder in C:\Users\Berton\Documents named Test 1 then opened a small text file and resaved it into the Test 1 Folder, worked fine. I've had issues at times in other versions of Windows in trying to save into a Libraries Folder so go directly to where the actual files reside.

I am using Windows 7 Professional
I am using Google Chrome web browser
I have 2 to partitions, C and D
C = 30 GB
D = 150 GB

I set my "Downloads" folder from Chrome into the D drive
I made a Favorites shortcut to my D drive on Windows 7

A problem started happening the last week or so
My "Downloads" folder takes up to a minute to load up
I click on the folder under favorites, everything is blank
As if there wasn't any files
Then about a minute later, the files start to show up

At first I ignored this problem and brushed it off
Then it got really repetitive as I really wanted to access a file
Then I had to sit back and wait for the file to load up

Any ideas on why its doing this and how to solve it?

Thanks!

Answer:Files inside folder takes about 30 seconds to view

Are C and D on the same drive?

Hi everyone,

I had a folder on my desktop with some zipped files in it and I wanted to unzip them inside of the sandbox of the program sandboxie. I moved the folder to C:\Temp\Sandbox\HP_Administrator\DefaultBox\user\current

After I moved the folder and tried to open it, access was denied. I used the program "unlocker" to move the folder back to my desktop but access is still denied. The folder properties says the folder is empty, but when go to my C drive and click on the properties, the hard drive free space is showing a size that suggests the data is still on the drive, but I cannot find or access it.

I used the "everything search engine" http://www.voidtools.com/ and when I search for the file names, they show up in the search results inside of the correct directory / folder, but they show a size of zero and I cannot access them or even click on them to obtain their properties.

I tried to restart the computer (probably should have done this) and it did not help.

Can anyone tell me what may have happened or how I might get this data back ? If I cannot get the data back, my hard drive free space has been reduced by the size of the data in the folder, can I at least get the hard drive free space back ?

Thanks
John

Answer:Moved folder and now I cannot access it or find data inside

I was able to recover the data using "minitool power data recovery free".

However, the "missing data" is still on the hard drive somewhere and it has reduced the amount of free space on my drive by double what the original file sizes were (the size of the recovered data and the non accessible data).

I can try to delete the non accessible folder on my desktop with "unlocker" but the folder shows a size of zero. I'm not sure it would get the free space back on the drive.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can delete the missing data and regain the free space on the C: drive ? If I cannot ever access the missing data to delete it, will this likely hurt anything ?

Thanks
John

Not quite sure what exactly you are asking as your spelling, grammar, and sentence structure leave a lot to be desired. I apologize if English is not your first language, but it makes questions a lot more difficult to read when one has to try to decipher what the original poster is trying to convey. In any case, if I am understanding your question correctly, it does not sound as if you are infected. The folders that were created were the result of the improper removal of the USB device while the OS was attempting to write to it.Please let me know if you have any questions. -----IT Desktop & Network Consultant - MOS Master Certified, MCP Certified, CCNA Certificate Pending, A+ Certified.::geek::

Hiya

Are you still having this problem? If so, can you post a HijackThis log:

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi,

I have shared one folder and in security I added "everyone" and given full permission (full control, write, etc.)

But still I cannot access some pdf files in the folder from another computer. I can open the folder but when I try to open the pdf file I'm getting some permission error. Then I went to the first computer I selected all pdf files >> right click >> properties >> I changed security and added everyone there. Then I could open the pdf files from another computer.

Now the problem is every time when I add some files in the shared folder. I have to select all the files inside and add permission even though the folder itself is given full permission. I wonder why is it so?

Answer:shared folder with full permission cannot access files inside

If the same users access this folder. Add each person individually with Full Control rather then the Everyone Group to the permissions of the folder. Or You can add the users to the Power Users Group. Then allow the Power Users Group to have Full control.

Why is not a good idea to store files inside c:\windows folder?

Answer:Why is not a good idea to store files inside c:\windows folder?

Hello Stuckfree,

Usually, it's best to keep your files in either your user folders or another drive location. This is because of permission issues that could arise since C:\Windows is a restricted system folder, and your "C:\Users\(user-name)" folder or other location isn't.

Hope this helps some,

Hi;

I have win 7 ultimate x64 installed in my box. I have a issue, Im triyng with no success via google and registry hacks to inserting the "Font" folder as a shortcut in "My Pc" window.

I can add a recycle bin, control panel and administrative tools with success but not for the Font folder case. I tried this in registry:

"[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace\{93412589-74d4-4e4e-ad0e-e0cb621440fd}]
"

Where "{93412589-74d4-4e4e-ad0e-e0cb621440fd}" is supposed to be the correct ( for win 7 ) the path to Font folder. When I execute the reg file does not appear anything...

If I try to do this by adding a new line to the above code listed:

'@="Fonts"' ( Ignore the simple commas, not double commas)

It not shows it no success. What I am missing in this issue? I got nut no idea what can I do...

So, I've made this mistake lots of times -- heavy-handed cruising down my Favorites list accidentally drags an innocent Favorites folder inside of the folder above or below where the disappeared folder was. I confidently go to "Organize favorites" and pull up the list of favorites. Problem is: I can't just drop & drag a folder that's stuck inside of another folder. It just gets jerked back inside of the wrong folder. The stuck folder is forever stuck as it seems like all I am allowed to move are folders which are lined up neatly against the left margin of the list, not one that is hiding in the wrong place. I'm missing something simple here...

Answer:Favorite folder stuck inside another favorite folder

Hello nottaclue9,

If you haven't already, you might see if you may be able to move the folder back to how you had it from the folder location below instead. This is where Favorites in Internet Explorer are stored at, and may be easier to work with here.

C:\Users\(user-name)\Favorites

Hope this helps,

My question is a security question.
If someone has a file on his/her computer that contains personal/secure information, for example a text file that contains passwords and account numbers, or an audio recording of a conversation where account numbers and passwords were spoken out loud...  Is it possible for fragments of the secure file to end up getting stuck inside of another file or group of files on the same pc...making it possible for someone to reconstruct the secure file from the fragmented pieces and/or view its original contents?  Or could it be possible even for the entire secure file to somehow end up inside of another larger file on the same computer...making it easy for someone to view the secure information....(by the way I only used a text file or an audio file as an example...it could be any file containing secure data)...My simplified concern is this...If you have a file that contains information that you want to keep secure...is there anyway that pieces of this file, if not the whole file it self, could end up inside of another file or a group of files on the same computer that the file containing the secure information was created on?...thus making it a security risk to even share mp3s on a computer that ever had any secure information on it...since maybe there'd be a change ur credit card numbers and passwords might somehow end up in one of those mp3s that ur sharing in a peer to peer file sharing program online.....or do things not work like tha... Read more

Answer:Can a File somehow end up inside of another file/files

It all depends on the program you are using to access the files. For example, Windows (starting from XP) creates a hidden file thumbs.db that contains thumbnails of all the images inside a folder. If you delete the original pictures through some other program or command line, and do not open the folder in Windows Explorer, this file still stays there. If you share the folder, this file gets shared too. Your information gets leaked.

If you use a computer for banking online or shopping online (any kind of financial transaction), then do not ever use that computer for P2P file sharing.

I have received an mail that has a RAR attachment. The contents of the email are such that it can only have been written by someone who knows me, i.e. its not been generated automatically and the suggested contents could be useful to me. Unfortunately my reply to him bounced as his email company saw me as spam. Is there any way I can view the contents of a RAR file without actually opening it and possibly exposing my PC to some sort of nasty surprise?

Answer:Looking inside a RAR file

I wouldn't risk it.

Just a quick question, is there an application to sort through the contents of an .exe file? And will it just display coded gibberish? What sort of language are .exe files written in? Is is possible to edit .exe files? Sorry, questions, questions....Thanks ;)

Answer:How can I look 'inside' an .exe file??

Hi i am using windows vista ultimate 32 bit and yesterday my computer went incredibly slow for seemingly no reason so i opened task manager and saw that my CPU usage was at 100%,after looking through the list of processes to see what was being such a resource wh0re, i couldn't see any processes that were using alot of cpu power so i downloaded "Process Explorer" and found that my problem was something called "Hardware Interrupts" which was (and still is) using 88-100% of my cpu how can i fix this problem? PLEASE help as i am completely stumped by this one.oh,and by the way,the 100% cpu usage is constant from the minute my PC is turned on,even with no apps running it stays at a constant 100%.

Hi,

I am setting up a backup system for my pc, backsup to a remote machine via ftp. The files to backup will be compressed into a zip file and then backed up to the remote machine. My question is, if my pc gets infected with a virus and those files backed up to the remote machine, will the virus infect the remote machine as well ? (if the files are not unzipped on the remote machine & both machines running on windows Xp pro). Appreciate any help or suggestions in this.

Regards
Sudhi

Answer:Virus inside a rar or zip file

No, malware inside a ZIP or RAR file can't infect a machine, unless you extract the malware (and execute it).

So in your case, the simple fact of storing a ZIP backup on a remote machine will not infect that remote machine.

That's why malware researchers share malware samples in password-protected ZIP files.

Major things happening the last few days. 1) insufferable amount of pop-ups (IE powered by Comcast) 2)over 100 shortcut messages (EXAMPLE: MORZE5.lnk refers to a location that is unavailable) at boot-up that have to be clicked through. I do see these on the HJT log and know you will know how to help. 3) Computer crashes, blue screen, white screen, you name it, several times a day.
What I did BEFORE I ran this log. I updated Adavare 6 and ran then deleted all it said, then ran spybot and that was all clear.

Hi tony82x,
Welcome to Major Geeks!

I'm making a bug collection, so if you'd like to contribute, please attach a screen shot of the bugs with your next post. Then please continue as follows:

Go to the READ & RUN ME FIRST and work through all the instructions. If there is something you can't do, just make a note of what happens to tell us later and then continue on. When you're finished, use the Manage Attachments button down below the reply window to attach your logs. If you get all four logs, you'll need to post twice, because you can only attach three logs with each post.

Thanks.

Answer:Communicator Toolbar and More - hjt log file inside

Hi TimS -

If you had followed through on your last thread here we may have avoided another round of cleaning. Please see this through to the end, where you will be given valuable protection information once your system is clean.

I'm going to have you run some scanning tools first, then we'll go after whatever is left.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running. Ad-Aware? SE Personal Edition
*Note* For Ad-AwareSE also install the VX2 Addon Cleaner To run this tool ... Read more

Without using any Nero or file burning software, can Windows XP itself supports simple file copying to disc. Not that I know of, but i have a user who can do these.

1. select a file, right click and press SEND TO the burner
2. simply copy and paste the file to the burner
3. reopen a file on a disc, edit it, and then can save it back onto the disc.

Strange, anyone welcome to comment. Thanks.

I have a fairly large Fortran 77/90 & C program, compiled using Compaq Visual Fortran 6 & Microsoft Visual C++ 6 under Win XP.  On a particular test case it generally executes ok when invoked outside a batch file, but always fails when invoked from a particular batch file.  It stops on a Fortran 90 Allocate statement, but does not return the STAT result coded into that statement.  Seems to relate more to how much storage has been allocated rather than to the particular array being allocated, because I can reorder the allocation of different arrays and the stop does not occur on the same array.Although this is a large body of code, the test case is small and should not be requiring a large amount of allocated storage.I have tryed cutting the batch file down to just the statements that occur before invoking the EXE file (which are SET /P, ECHO, COPY, DEL, IF EXIST), then running the truncated batch file, then executing the EXE outside the batch file.  The EXE also fails in that usage.Any ideas on what I should be looking for to fix this?

I got caught this morning. Hungover, tired, and just plain dumb.

"A friend" sent me a file. Supposedly some great an amazing pics of her new baby. On offer was a .zip file which I downloaded. Within there was a "picture" only it was xxx.jpg.xxx.com, so in fact it was really a .com file.

I ran this file (yes, I am dumb), and now my MSN sends out endless requests to other people to download these files from me which will infect them.

Perhaps my saving grace is that I use WinPatrol. When I ran this it detected changes to my registry startup areas which I told it to remove. Once I had rebooted I am no longer sending out nasty messages (so far, its hard to say exactly how often the messages are sent). However, the virus files are still on my machine in an unknown location.

I do still have the original infected file that I was sent which can be made available for analysis.

I am running XP Pro SP2, and use Eset NOD32 V3 with most recent updates. The bug went straight through this like a knife through butter. I have updated and recanned my machine both locally, and with Eset's online scanner. Nothing found. Eset misses the install files for the virus, and also the running virus (my friend's machine is still actively spamming the virus files out).

Hello .
I cant access my system volume information file on my hard drive. Spyware doctor has located a trojan there and blocked it on several occasions but I cant access the file to delete it. It says that access is denied. What do I do.

If you can boot into Safe Mode try deleting the file there. Safe Mode has a limited amount of applications running which makes it ideal for purposes like this.

I've asked that a Moderator move this topic to the Am I Infected forum where there are those that are more knowledgeable about these problems.

hey guys, i got attacked by some virus or trojan or whatever it was, got some services removed and i need some reg keys to restore them....

If you are on Windows 7 x64 sp1, just go here in regedit;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrenControlSet\

and export the services subfolder and paste it up in a reply!

All the headache from trying to fix this with solutions now, i think im missing some vital part and only the right registry files can fix.

make sure you are on 7 x64 sp1...

thanks.

For those of you who have been complaining about the perceived slowness of Vista file copy operations (And <insert deity name here> knows ther have been many), I now present to you a copy of Mark Russinovich's blog dated 4 February 2008.

In his blog, he provides in-depth details of how the copy engine works, and what improvments have been made to this engine in Vista SP1.

Happy reading!

----------------------
The original text for this post can be read in Mark Russinovich's blog at http://blogs.technet.com/markrussinovich/
----------------------

Windows Vista SP1 includes a number of enhancements over the original Vista release in the areas of application compatibility, device support, power management, security and reliability. You can see a detailed list of the changes in the Notable Changes in Windows Vista Service Pack 1 whitepaper that you can download here. One of the improvements highlighted in the document is the increased performance of file copying for multiple scenarios, including local copies on the same disk, copying files from remote non-Windows Vista systems, and copying files between SP1 systems. How were these gains achieved? The answer is a complex one and lies in the changes to the file copy engine between Windows XP and Vista and further changes in SP1. Everyone copies files, so I thought it would be worth taking a break from the ?Case of?? posts and dive deep into the evolution of the copy engine to show how SP1 improves its performance.

SPDT.SYS used by daemon tools/alcohol and KeyMagic. Both.

Your computer was up for 2 plus days so it isnt happening frequently, and removing those two items may fix it.
Ken J

Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%. They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs. Use this SPTD uninstaller when you're done: DuplexSecure - Downloads

I'm recently noticed that some zip files that I store images on contain some empty image files "0 KB".
I'm just wondering if anybody knows of a quick way to scan a bunch of folders each with several zip each and then show which zip files contain empty files.

Thank you.

Answer:Check inside zip files for empty file

Use wither 7-zip or Winzip. Basic computing 101.
