3.5 external hard disk vs 3.5 internal hard disk with enclosure?

Question: 3.5 external hard disk vs 3.5 internal hard disk with enclosure?

What is the difference of 3.5 external hard disk (e.g. WD My Book) vs a 3.5 internal hard disk fixed into an enclosure to work like an external hard disk?

Are both good to be use as an external drive to store backup?

What 3.5 enclosure is good?

Thanks

Preferred Solution: 3.5 external hard disk vs 3.5 internal hard disk with enclosure?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: 3.5 external hard disk vs 3.5 internal hard disk with enclosure?

What do you mean fixed into an enclosure to work like an external drive? Are you referring to a My Book 3.0 VIA USB 3.0.... vs.... an internal SATA III SSD or HDD? Be a little more specific.

hi all,

i would like to ask you a very basic question:

What is the difference between an external hard disk and an internal hard disk mounted on external enclosure?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure risky in terms of loosing the data?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure reliable to use?

kindly let me know as there is a vast difference in the price of these hard disks. The external hard disk is costing more and if i use internal hard disk in external enclosure price is very much reduced.

my only concern about using internal hard disk in external enclosure is the reliability.

thanks in advance,

regards,

Couple of hours ago my Windows 7 could not recognize my external USB hard disk (Maxtor Basic). It came up on Disk Management and Device Manager but not on My Computer. However I fixed it (by deleting its line off regedit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, plugging out the ext. HD and plugging back in). Windows automatically installed the drivers and I could access the drive.

But now Windows shows my Maxtor as a fixed disk drive, instead of "devices with removable storage". I still have the option to "Safely remove hardware and eject media" from taskbar, however I rather have Windows treating it as a Removable USB Storage so that the disk can sleep when not in use. I am pretty sure it has something to do with regedit, so any help would be appreciated.

Answer:USB external hard disk shows up as internal fixed disk

Welcome to Windows 7 Support Forums, Sactyr.
A word of caution! Its never a good idea to alter your register,
IMHO please review your device manager and check your devices for your disk drives, check for any warnings in the driver area.
I'm attaching my screenshot for comparison as I have a similar configuration.

If I am saving a backup to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 USB external hard disk

1. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 3.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

2. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 2.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

Thanks

Answer:Speed of saving to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 external disk?

There's no definitive answer, it would all depend on which internal drives you had (SSD/HDD, SATA 6GB, SATA 3GB) and which external drives you had and their relative transfer speeds. It's all just guesswork without that info.

What size External Hard Drive Disk Enclosure do I need?

My trusty old Dell Latitude d600 finally died on me - the monitor and screen needs replaced and it would be cheaper to buy a new laptop (apparently).

I want to take the HD out to retrieve my stuff - which size of portable External Hard Drive Disk Enclosure do I need? My new laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6000 and the HD looks the same as my old one.

Do I need a 2.5" enclosure (like this one);

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB2-0-2-...es_HardDriveEnclosures_RL&hash=item3a68627d72

or a 3.5" size like this?;

hope u can help! thanks in advance

well ive run out of hard disk space like every other laptop user and i wanted to try and set up an external kit

what i had in mind was to use a PCMCIA card to IDE or SATA connector to connect via the pcmcia slot to a normal IDE or SATA internal hard disk drive in an enclosure...

is this possible or a pipe dream?

if it is possible - will the connected hard disk have the capacity/speed to boot up an operating system or run apps off it?

also what would anyone recommend - an IDE or SATA HD considering the fact that its connected via a PCMCIA card and its performance is/isnt limited by it...

really hope someone can help as i havent got a clue

I have been looking for a 2TB portable external hard drive with USB 3.0 or equivalent. I'm now thinking seriously about getting a WD:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1455023&CatId=4227

I'm hearing on other threads that external drives are not built for continuous use (cooling has been mentioned as an issue) and that one needs to go the more expensive route of an internal hard drive in a separately purchased enclosure.

I would prefer having a secondary hard drive running concurrently with my computer. I know cooling devices are available for the internal HDD + enclosure combinations. Are they available for external hard drives?

I intend to have online backup to supplement hardware backup.

Answer:Your view on subject of external hard drive vs. internal HD in an enclosure?

Personally, I prefer buying a highly rated bare drive and placing it in a fan cooled enclosure - especially if it will be running for hours at a time.

The best internal drives (like WD Caviar Black or RE series) have a five year warranty, versus 1-2 years for pre-built external drives. To me, it's worth a few extra bucks versus taking chances on losing data due to an overheating drive.

Hi all,

Basic summary - I put together a home theater PC (HTPC) a few months ago, the internal hard drive started out ok, then started clicking with long load times, now the PC will only turn on (no image to monitor) and loud hard drive clicking. However, when I moved hard drive to external enclosure, hard drive clicked for 15 minutes, and is now silent. What's going on?

I have a 410s that is still under warranty and crashed. It doesn't appear to be the hard drive- over the phone support had me run a disk check and it passed.  But they want me to return the computer with the hard drive in it and, if there is a problem, they will not do any recovery. Bear with me, I barely know what I am talking about! i was told to get a hard drive enclosure, put in disk drive and attempt to download files to another computer just in case (these are work files and I need them) I do not know what kind to get or, from where I can get it quickly. Tried Best Buy today and the young man had no clue.the drive is Toshiba SSD thns128gg4bAAA nonFDE i understand the concept and also that if it is a hard drive problem it won't work. But I want to try it and do not know what type of "enclosure" to get as they seem to come in all sizes.  thanks for any help. kim

Answer:Enclosure for hard disk

That is a 1.8" SATA drive and it will not fit into any normal enclosure. It has a special SATA connector. The Lenovo FRU to turn it into a normal 2.5" hard drive is 42W7888. I have one here I am looking at, but San Francisco is a long drive from Boston. If you really need one, send me a PM and I can ship overnight. The request seems unreasonable. Do you have another computer to hook it to? Desktop? Do you have a spare SATA port? If you had an adapter, a computer repair place could copy the data.

Is it a 3.5 or 2.5? 2.5 or laptop drives can be powered off USB, 3.5 can't.
You can build a case, what are you thinking? connecting via USB?
There are plenty of cheap cases out there, but you'll need some sort of IDE/SATA to USB connector, or eSATA...
I was going to build a drive cases out of an old SCSI CD-Rom duplicator, just put a USB hub and some USB drive bays, never got it off the ground, moved on...

Perhaps I could jump in here with a related question. I searched the forums for a response but didn't find anything that directly responded to my question:

I bought a new PC that runs Vista. I salvaged the HDD from my old machine, bought an external enclosure, and attached the old HDD to my new machine via USB.

When I check "my computer" it shows the old HDD as the K drive. My question is: how can I access files on the old HDD automatically when using the Vista computer? In other words, if I have a Word file on the K drive, I can't open it directly from Word on the new machine. I have to go directly to the K drive, search for the file, and use "open with" to get the file to open. I can't even open it by double clicking on it, and the icon looks different. I'd like to understand why this is.

Incidentally, the K drive (old HDD) still has XP on it, if that makes any difference.

Many thanks to anyone who can advance my education here.

My computer has external hard drive connected to USB 2.0 port(s), which is extremely slow. Drive is Transcend StoreJet. No drivers exist for it. It works perfectly for other I/O operations like copy, paste, delete, etc. When I try to make hard disk image with any program, and store it on Transcend Store Jet, speed starts with 50MB/s but drops to nearly zero in few minutes. You can see example on attached picture. It is the same with any program. Disk image would take more than one day to complete, if it completes at all. Actually, I never managed to finish image with any disk imaging software. I tried all usual software for that: Paragon, Aomei, Acronis, EaseusToDo, Drive XML, etc. Are there any USB or other drivers which are responsible for this issue? Can Gigabyte be serious regarding its costumers and provide them solution in order to use USB ports for most important thing (backup)? In this case, making disk image is totally impossible. USB 2.0 ports have speed оf 480 Mbit/s, theoretical. This is far cry from situation here. So, ... Read more

Imaging your 150 Gig via Usb will take time { Mine are about 40-50 Gig } Operating System And Programs Only.

I personally partition my main Drive eg: c:\ and d:\ and so only the operating system is on C;\
Then use the D;\ to store your personal files. , this way your c:\ wont keep growing in size as you are storing everything there.
If you cant actually do anything with the computer because of warranties as you stated "just serviced" , ask them why you cant Image Drive.

Options:
1/ Try another hard drive to backup to.{ Usb will always be slower } than directly connected to Mobo.
2/ Use Mini Tool Partition Wizard [ Free } to create another partition - http://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmagic/partition-windows-7-system.html
3/ Remove all Temp Files / Restore Points / etc with Ccleaner { Free ] - https://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER
this will reduce C:\ size to minimal size { defrag drive also }.
4/ Use any program to Image C:\ { I use Acronis }. to the D:\ Backup Folder.
5/ Then copy the image to any portable drive or external if need be.
6/ Use the D:\ for your personal files and folders as a backup also.

Sometimes you have to do things yourself - than rely on Service Centres and Costs.
If you run a Business then you claim all your costs incurred.

All this will take time but you will have backups and feel at ease.

I'd like to erase all prejudice from your minds before you chuckle, thinking that I'm some naive user who hasn't searched Google. I'm pretty sure this is quite an odd case.

I have a new Maxtor 500GB ATA hard disk drive. I set the jumper Master, and put it into an Adaptec USB/Firewire Enclosure case (ACS-200 is product #). Then I plugged it into my computer via USB, and formatted it with an HP USB formatting tool to NFTS. Well, it wasn't long before I noticed that it was only 127GB capacity [yes, this is the prejudice part]. So, I traversed the net, and it seems that this is a common problem. I verified that I have SP 2 (Windows Media Center 2002). Well, then I noticed a Maxblast CD that came with my drive. I installed that, and it performed a registry hack to enable 48bit LBA addressing (basically: "lets you use drives over 137gb"). Then I used Maxblast to wipe and re-format the drive (all of this is still via USB enclosure). No matter what I did, even with Windows formatter and even Partition Magic, I could not get my computer to read the device as 500GB.

After a couple of hours, I took out my 250GB drive that I've always used for my computer (partitioned into 70GB and 160GB, if you care) and replaced it with my 500GB Maxtor drive. I booted from the Maxtor CD, and entered its DOS Drive Formatter. THEN it registered as 500GB. Great. So, I partitioned all of the space into about 5 NFTS partitions of 120GB or less. ... Read more

I have a problem regarding my external Toshiba hard disk 500 GB where it can?t be detected in my computer and also disk management. I have formatted the external HD since I was asked to format it when an error popped up.
So I formatted it and after the formatting completed, I tried to connect the hard disk to my Windows Win 7 laptop. When I connect it to the laptop, it can?t be detected and yet the hard disk is blinking with its white light like it used to when it is connected to the laptop. I tried the disk management thingy, but it can?t detect my hard disk. I tried in other laptops but the result is same
What can I do to make it better? Please help me.

Answer:External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

First off, how old is your Toshiba external HDD? Also, when it starts to spin up, do you hear any sort of clicking or whining noise?

If you hear any noises that sound off, it's possible your external HDD is failing.

When you formatted it, what file system did you use to do so? Because sometimes even if Windows can't detect it, I have had success with booting with a Ubuntu Live CD, and then connecting the external HDD in order to format it that way. It all has to do with how Windows formats HDD's and how Ubuntu and other Linux systems do.

If you can I recommend downloading Ubuntu onto a CD and boot to it on one of your computers, in the Live CD mode, so it doesn't install anything. Once its loaded, plug in the Toshiba and try to format it as NTFS (this is important, because Ubuntu doesn't use it as a native file system, so you need to make sure that NTFS is selected on the format window, not EXT4 or the other types of Linux OS File Systems)

If it doesn't work, post back here, and I will see if I can help you some more. Also feel free to PM me if you have any other issues.

Regards,
-Alex

My company's computer needs to be patitioned and reformat. The system is still working well. I mean, nothing wrong with anything (weird huh?). Ok the hard disk just need to be 'split'. I mean, make drive C & D on the hard disk. I know how to do that... easy... Then the HD need to be formatted & reinstall windows XP. Ok, easy too..

But the main problem occured before I do anything (partition & format). I have my own bootable CD that I usually use for partitioning & formatting.

Ok, i insert the CD & restart.
I went to BIOS & changed the boot order (1st boot: CD-ROM, 2nd: HDD-0 & 3rd: Floppy). Then restart again.
Ok the bootable CD is excellently loaded.
I typed fdisk, then came the first problem. it says something like 'no fixed disk'. I exit fdisk.
Then I typed format c:, 2nd problem occured. it says something like, 'invalid drive'.
I forgot the error message because the pc is in my office right now. I'm currently at home 'begging for help' So the error message is not accurate. sorry..

I think, if I run the CD, the hard disk will not be loaded (or should I say, hard disk failure). & If I take off the CD & restart again, change the BIOS (1st boot: HDD-0) then windows will load! Weird right?

I don't think my CD is 'corrupted' nor broken because I tried to run the CD from another PC. Yes, I can access the C drive from that PC.

Does anyone have any idea of the ... Read more

Answer:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

I have an external hard disk which got corrupted. When i connect the disk through USB it shows as an unknown device in the disk management with no option to format.

In My computer the device is showing as H: drive but unable to access it. It asks if i want to format or not but when i go for format it does not do it. I want to erase the disk completely as of now. What should i do??

I tried to load it from linux but there it shows as Device Error. Disk Failure is Imminent.

Can something be done or is it a hardware failure.

Answer:External Hard disk showing as RAW in disk management

Sounds like the drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure is faulty.

I would first remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up as a slave to a desktop PC. See if you can then access it. If you can, then post back for further instructions with the version of your OS.

Up to this point I have used either Acronis or Paragon for my backups, I prefer Paragon over Acronis, mainly because the restore by Paragon is far quicker.

I have both bootable CD's, but in this instance I would like to concentrate on Paragon.

I downloaded Paragon's Advanced Recovery CD. 2009 Build 6730. Put it in my rom and booted ....... looked at a black screen for 10 minutes. Removed it and rebooted, it got stuck at the loading of Vista, then I got another black screen no hard drive movement.

Rebooted again, this time with the regular Paragon bootable CD. It booted into the recovery console.

Now this is where things go from bad to worse. I tried finding my OS, after a lengthy period I received an error disk 2 i/o fault!!! ....... no operating system found.

Now disk 2 is my external hard drive where my backups are kept.

So I rebooted with the CD in, went into the recovery console and clicked on "safe restore", after playing the waiting game I get a message disk 2 i/o fault!!!.

Took out the Paragon CD, put in the Vista one, tried a repair, but there was no OS to repair .

So I installed Vista, and because I didn't want to have to reinstall all of my programs again (yer lazy I know, but that's what backup's are for).

Checked with the fresh install, that my two external hard drives, had there drivers and were present. They were ... Read more

[Seriously need help] External hard disk causes hard drive failures & OS crashes
The thread is rather long. Only read what you think important. Skip the rest!

We have a serious but mysterious problem. We have spent already one week but drawing a blank.
Two hard drives have been crashed and failed (unreadable). One computer has hung a few times unexpectedly and had one weird restart (no memory dump produced).
I suspect all the recent problems have to do with the new USB external hard disk (Buffalo MiniStation Lite: HD-PE250U2).

**********
Formatting USB external hard disk
**********
Originally I would like to use the program given by Buffalo to format the external drive once but we failed. We simply used Windows to reformat the drive into NTFS. I did not use the TurboSpeed advertised by Buffalo, or run its free program.

Case A: Multi-transfer causes system crashes?
**********
The first time we met the problem.
We were trying to help a friend to backup data on an old drive, about a few years old. We plugged in the Buffalo USB portable hard drive and transferred a whole lot of files to the drive. Several cop/cut-and-paste operations were active at that time. The whole system completely froze up. It doesn't respond at all. Only a hard restart could help.
Restarted. Tranferred again. Several cop/cut-and-paste operations were active.
Hard drive crashed - the beginning of the nightmare!
Windows restarted. Chkdsk was running. Saw many lines of messages with:

Hi, I have a X41 tablet,  Type 1866 - 6SG with initally 40GB internal HDD, bought in Switzerland. Now I have moved to Luxembourg and my HDD is wrecked. I haven't found a reliable lenovo representative in Luxembourg so far, so I tried to order a new HDD on the net The prices I found so far on the net range from 475$ - 975$ which, I think, is outrageous for such a device.I still want to use my machine and I would be very gratefull if someone could give me advise where to get a new HDD for a reasonable price. Thx a lot for your help ! Dan

I'm using a motherboard (MSI-7592 G41) and I was using 4 hard disk through it in the past. Two of them started to show problem so, I stop using them for a while. I thought it was the problem of the hard disk. But I checked it on another PC, there were indeed some problems in them which I fixed with chkdsk command.Upon further checking out I found it was the cable from the power supply (dont know the name but i have the picture of it below) at fault. So, I replaced them. Now when I plugg all 4 hard disk on my pc. It is working fine and showing all hard disks but I feel like there is something lagging in my system. The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail  SATA hard drive can be used. I believe this model uses a laptop/mobile hdd.Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

HiI want add an additional internal hard disk and i have ATA type currently. The problem is connecting the data cable; i have two sockets on my motherboard only - both in use. One cable goes to the current disk and one of the cd drives, the other goes to the other cd drive i guess. So i have no free sockets (i have 2 cables but only one has the midway connector but is in use as described). So is the solution to replace the cable that doesnt have a midway connector with a cables that does have one?

Suppose, I don't have an internal hard disk installed but have an Ubuntu's Live CD, would I be able to run applications? Thanks.

I checked the BIOS and it shows the hard drive is there and also ran the Dell Startup thing that checks the different components and got no errors.

What do I do next?

Answer:Internal hard disk drive not found...

Run the Dell Diagnostics again but this time select the Custom Hard drive extended test. The hard drive has most likely failed.

I had bought an internal hd (500gb) an year back but due to some reason my motherboard was not detecting it. So I bought a case and made it external.
Now yesterday I bought a 2tb ext hard disk . So I thought that I should get rid of my internal 160 gb hard disk and remove the case of the 500 gb one and make it internal.

Now I want to format the 500gb.
Right now it is external but I'll be using it as internal. So I'm worried to format it just like that.
Is there a software for proper formatting of a drive or should I format it through the right click option.
If through the right click option then what should be the type ?
NTFS(default) or exFAT ?
And what should be the allocation unit size ?
There are many of them .

P.S. If I'm posting this in wrong section then please move to the proper one.

Thnx

Answer:Help in formatting ext hard disk ( actually internal with casing)

Format it via the right click way,and if you want choose full format for safety, the the type is NTFS Default, and the size will be filled in by the pc automaticly,so just leave that as it is. There are other softwares to use,but this way is the fastest. If you want you can format it when you boot up you pc,via the bios setup. But doing it the right click way will be easier.

Good luck

I hope this is the correct forum?

I received my new desktop today and it is running Windows 7 OS.

I am using it for work and it has 2 x 320GB internal hard drives so that I can back up my work related files from one HD to the other, then if the number 1 (C: drive) fails, I have a backup on the second HD. This is particularly important since it has all my business related stuff (invoices etc.)

Anyway, I thought that I would be able to schedule a backup via W7, however W7 is not recognising the second HD. The wizard to schedule a backup is suggesting I use an external drive and does not recognise that there are actually 2 internal HD in the tower.

I have done a bit of research and I have found the second HD and initialized it. I have then set the HD up as GPT and I am now at the stage where the insallation wizard is asking for a Simple Layout and NTFS file system.

I don't want to click finish on the wizard if this is not the correct procedure to allow W7 to find the 2nd HD so that I can schedule the backup from HD1 to HD2.

Can anyone help and advise if this is thecorrect procedure please?

Thanks.

Jason.

Alright, so I have a Dell Latitude D630 laptop that's rather old and has several major problems, including never charging, overheating without a small fan next to it, and the occasional key falling off. Well, I was using it a few nights ago and it was working better than usual. Eventually, I turned it off and went to bed. Nothing unusual happened then, but the next day, when I booted it up, it told me the internal hard drive was missing and suggested I reseat it. I ran a diagnostic and it told me basically the same thing but this time it was accompanied by a happy little tune composed of loud beeps, as if to say: "Ha ha, I have found yet another way to ruin your life by becoming even more of an ungrateful mule than I already am, a feat which you thought was impossible but apparently isn't." As of today, when I try to boot it up, it doesn't even show the Dell logo before turning off. This is naturally a tad miffing, but I hope reseating the hard drive will help. Thing is, I don't know how. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh boy. Somewhere between the time I posted tonight about my computer running slow and now, my computer has completely failed me.

It's a Dell Inspiron 9300. About 4 years old. Without finding a way into it, I can't tell you much else. The only thing I downloaded today was HJT so I could post a log on the other thread I have up.

I fell asleep on the couch, and when I awoke, there was a lovely blue screen with some gibberish about "if this is the first time you have seen this screen, restart" and when I did...BLACK SCREEN and this horrendous clicking noise coming from the lower right-hand side of the unit. I should also mention the unit was so hot to the touch I nearly burned myself. Literally. It's gotten hot before, but this was honestly stove-top burner hot.

The message is "internal hard disk drive not found" press f1 to continue or f2 to...something. F1 gets me back to the same black screen. F2 gets me to bios where it confirms I no longer have an internal hard drive.

The good news is I have an external harddrive backup. The bad news is it was last backed up on 9/10 and I've done at least 20 jobs since then (graphic design) and three in progress with in-hand dates of less than 5 days from now. I'm just sick. AND I KNOW BETTER!

Anyway, is it really toast?! Help!
Natalie

Answer:Internal hard disk drive not found - PLEASE HELP!!

Yeah 4 years out of a Hard Drive is actually very good. There are a couple ways to retrieve the data. It just depends on how important it is. If it is very very important ($2500 important) than locate a data recovery center.

Answer:New Internal Hard Disk Drive Problems

You may have knocked the video card loose when replacing the HDD.
Make sure it's firmly in the slot.

If the PC has a built-in video chip, then make sure all the cables and memory are firmly plugged in.

When you turn it on, does the PC sound like it's turning on? (fans spinning, beeps, etc.)

Hey all I have an Alienware X51 R3 and I was messing with my command prompt and accidentally changed what I believe is the path too boot my hard drive... In the command prompt I said

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\

I then reset my computer and now I get a "Internal hard disk drive not found to resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive. No bootable devices. Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 enter Setup Menu, F5 enter PSA"

I don't know what to do, I can boot my Linux OS by inserting my USB and I can mount my HDD and access everything in there. However I dont know how to boot my windows OS. How can I fix this? How can I fix the path back to my HDD?

Answer:Internal hard disk drive not found.

You will need external media to boot into the Command Prompt, either a Recovery Drive or Install Media.  You may be able to download the install media from Dell and make a bootable flash drive.
Another alternative might be to boot into the media and run the command below.
bootrec /rebuildbcd
The real entry looks like the one below.. Of course, your volume numbers and GUID numbers will probably be different.
path                    \EFI\MICROSOFT\BOOT\BOOTMGFW.EFI
While there you might do a bcdedit  to make sure it looks something like this.
indows Boot Manager

identifier              {bootmgr}
device                  partition=\Device\HarddiskVolume2

I have a Satellite Pro P200 with a single internal hard disk. There is a second bay under the computer for another internal hard disk but I have not been able to find any information about it. There is enough space for a 2.5" SATA drive but I cannot see a connector.

I contacted Dutch Toshiba Customer support who said that it was the official policy not to provide any information about a second hard internal disk. They also said that they would not supply any parts to make it possible.

Can anyone provide some more information?

You can check it yourself.
There should be an second HDD bay.
Remove the cover from the second HDD bay and check if there is an HDD connector (pin).
If you will not find any connectors then this would mean that an second HDD controller is not available and the usage of 2nd HDD is not possible.

Cheers

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 5748. Out of nowhere, my laptop reboots then displays the message that no internal hard disk is found. I've run the ePSA a few times, reseated the hard drive, then re-run the tests. Every test, particularly the hard drive, passes. Any guidance?

Hey all I have an Alienware X51 R3 and I was messing with my command prompt and accidentally changed what I believe is the path too boot my hard drive... In the command prompt I said

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\

I then reset my computer and now I get a "Internal hard disk drive not found to resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive. No bootable devices. Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 enter Setup Menu, F5 enter PSA"

I don't know what to do, I can boot my Linux OS by inserting my USB and I can mount my HDD and will have access to all the files in my drive.
I have no idea how to fix this, my computer will boot and instantly give that message unless I have my USB in to auto boot the Linux OS.How can I fix the path back to my HDD? Can I change anything in my hard drive through my Linux OS and make it work again? I don't even know how I would be able to reformat if I had no other option. What an I do?

Answer:Internal hard disk drive not found

This is my bootmgr entry, this is if you have a recovery partition as your first volume. If your boot partition is the first partition then the device value will end in HarddiskVolume1.

You probably just need to re-point path to the efi file.

My Model :1143A22, core i5 How do we know whether SATA III is compatible withThinkpad  E520.  SATA III having transfer rate of 6Gbps , whether my CPU can transfer at 6 Gbps ? In case if my CPU is not able to transfer at that rate I will go for SATA II (transfer rate 3Gbps) else SATA I((transfer rate 1.5Gbps). How to know the specification (transfer rate ) of CPU ???

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:Thinkpad E520, looking for new internal Hard disk

Hey there omcinside,

The E520 was shipped with the HM65 Mobile Express Chipset, and with at SATA II Drive. We know off the bat that the system will support SATA II for you no problem. Looking over the specs for HM65 Chipset, it states: "High-speed storage interface supporting up to 6 Gb/s transfer rate for improved data access. Provides up to 6 SATA ports at 3 Gb/s with up to 2 ports supporting 6 Gb/s transfer rates." So it should support SATA 3 as well.

I hope this helps.

I have an Inspirion 530 running Windows Vista with a 320 GB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive (Western Digital WD3200AAKS) which I would like to retire.  A couple of years ago I bought an 8700 which is now upgraded to Windows 10 with a Hard Drive described as KPF74 Hard Drive 1T, S3, 7.2K.  Not sure of the make as I didn't remove it.
I would like to use the Inspirion Hard Disk as a second Hard Disk in the 8700, hopefully without formatting it.  As I don't know much about the interchangeability in this scenario I am wondering what my options are?   I am assuming that I can use the SATA cable that came with the Inspirion Hard Disk and plug it into SATA 2 on the motherboard as I have a DVD in SATA 1.
Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop 1526, 2 years old. It came with Vista. I upgraded to Windows 7 back in Dec 2009.
I backed up my files onto an external HD the day before my system got this error. (3 days ago)
I physically took a picture of the screen with my camera to show what I was getting.
The first screen shows that internal hard disk drive not found.
Then I tried to do a "repair", and this is what it shows now ( i also took a picture of that too)

Test Performed:
System Disk Test
Result: Completed successfully. Error code OXO
Time taken 15ms

Root cause found:
System volume on disk corrupt
Repair Action: File system repair (chkdsk)

I have the original Dell OS CD...it says its Window XP service pack 2...however it came with Vista installed.
I also have the Windows 7 CD

Thank you
Elizabeth

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic28744.html)Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

Windows XP sp2 wont boot from hard disk.

After much to do turns out my computer doesnt recognise the hard disk.

I have a seagate 500Gb SATA hard drive, its about a year old, the computer doesnt get hot in the slightest and it shouldnt be dead. I checked the wiring, as far as i can see, its all fine.

only conclusion i come to is that my hard disk is kaput which it shouldnt be. Can anyone give me any other possible solutions to try out before i cry and/or spend money on a new one? theres a lot of data on it i dont want to lose.

If not, ill plug it in to another computer to check, i havent done that yet because it will take me hours - i can only unscrew the hard drive from one side without rearranging the room.

ty!

Answer:Hard disk boot failure -> computer won't recognise hard disk

Is your Seagate the 7200.11 series?

We've been seeing a lot of harddrive issues layely that has nothing to do with the drive itself but bad SATA cables aas the cause. Do you have another one you can switch out?

When you say the computer doesn't recognize it we're talking the BIOS here, correct?

Another suggestion is what you have already suggested but I would "slave" it in antother system and see if you can access it that way.

Hi guys,

I will try to explain this as simple as i can.So let's start
I have laptop ASUS N75SF and it is a year old,so i have decided to format.I have two separate hard disks that are the same brand,SeaGate 9500423 AS, each 500 gb capacity. Before i decided to format , one of my hard disks(that is my partition D) started to make strange noises and it was not recognized, but i was using my laptop without problems because my windows was installed on my other hard disk (that is my partition C).So now my question is this :
After i formatted them both i have no clue which one is which ? they are like :
Disk 0 Partition 1 465 gb
Disk 1 Partition 2 465 gb
So how do i choose the one that is better and not having problems to pust my winodows on?
I know that i can buy new one and replace it with the one that is having problems, but right now i have no money to do that .I am student

Thanks in advance

Answer:Confused about installing Windows on my hard disk, hard disk problem

I'm willing to bet that Disk 1 is the bad hard drive since the bad hard drive was the D: drive.

Greetings,

I have an Asus laptop running windows 7 64 bit and this laptop came with 2 hard drives, each partitioned into two parts (C:\ & D:\ and E:\ & F:\).

I am transferring over 30GB of data from one drive (C:\) to the other (F:\)

Get this... the transfer rate is 1.2MB/s right now. Over 9 hours left to copy the 30GB. There are over 125,000 items but that still does not justify the 1.2MB/s

I am open to any suggestions but first, a few points.
Yes, I am sure they are two separate drives with those partitions.
Error checking showed zero errors on both drives.
This is the 3rd time I am trying a transfer.
Both drives are relatively empty (especially the F:\).
C:\ is my system disk.
The SMART data shows no read/write errors or overheating.
I have disabled the virus protection and all real-time scanning.

Again, I am very open to suggestions and checks. Feel free to post your idea!

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Laptop Hard Disk to Hard Disk transfer Extremely Slow

My experience with file transfers of the type you describe...is that the number of files doesn't matter...what matters is how large the files are.  Video files take much longer than text or document files.

Slow transfer rates between partitions/drives...can indicate a problem with either the partititon or the drive, IMO.

Helloo..

I got an error on hard disk...

A hard disk devided to two partitions: (C - for OS Win XP Pro) and (D - 2nd partition).
The problem is, when i start the pc (windows was running but immediately restarted automatically - repeated). I take out the hard disk and installed it as a slave drive to other pc for data recovery before repair/format the problem hard disk.

FYI, the 2nd partition can be accessed and read. But the 1st partition of the hard disk (for OS) appeared this error when i try to open it : "THE DISK STRUCTURE IS CORRUPTED AND UNREADABLE". Is anyone can help me to solve this problem?

TQ

My DELL XPS 17 L701x laptop was equipped with Samsung Spinpoint MP4 HM640JJ 640GB 7200rpm hard disk. Last month, due to noise and auto shut down, i gave my system to dell service center for repair but took out my hard disk as it was containing "sensitive" data and i don't want to take any risk. Also i needed it for my dissertation. as my all data was on it. In the mean time i bought another Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200rpm drive as the xps has space for one more hard disk.
i put the samsung hard disk in usb case which need both side male usb connector. i was having an old connector which i tried to use but i can hear a little sound and it is not detected by my home desktop. so i got a new usb connector and it was easily detected and i used as usual usb external storage. when my laptop was fixed, i took back the samsung drive along with the new one to service center. and when they tried to place both drive, the system didn't responded at all, after some tries, they announced the samsung drive (which was originally shipped with laptop) has gone bad and is unable to detect. so i asked them to only fix newly bought drive in the system and make it workable by installing OS.
Now the issue is that my samsung drive can't be detected anywhere. neither in laptop, nor in my home/office desktop. though i was able to use it as external storage before but it suddenly stop working, leaving me nowhere. i have lot of important data on it and i want to recover it myse... Hello! I have a Dell studio 1735 laptop, with (seemingly) common problem and even more interesting spin to it.

When I boot, it sticks to the dell bios screen at about 95%, then shows up with this message:

"internal hard disk drive not found
To resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive."
(system beeps)
"No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility
Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics"

Of course, i press F5, it runs its full diagnostics, with flying colors (everything passes)
once thats done, it boots to windows fine, but its the ONLY way im able to boot to windows,i just dont want to have to do the full diagnostic EVERY time i turn on my laptop.. (plus i think that means that the HDD is going bad?)

I have reseated, checked connections, etc. i have pretty much checked all that i can find online about how to fix this issue, but no one else seems to have the same situation i do.

im not sure if anyone could help me, but im savvy enough to dump diagnostic files on here/etc.. i appreciate the help in advance

So lo and behold this morning I found my internal hard drive disk was not working. I ran the pre boot diagnostics and everything else was working fine. I went to best buy and got another hard drive (1 TB SATA drive) and switched the old one with the new one. The computer still won't boot, but now the pre boot diagnostics recognizes the drive is present and says it's working fine. Any ideas?

Hi All,
I just purchased a new internal hard drive (Seagate Barracuda hard drive - 3 TB - SATA-600) to be used for storing data. Installation was simple, and Disk Management noticed it right away, with 1 problem: The free space is 743.48 GB, not the 3000 or so I was expecting. Disk Manager says it is 100% free. So the big question is: Where is all that other disk space?

Thank you!!

Good day, I wish to upgrade my S10-4231's 160GB internal HD to a compatible 500GB unit.  What available disks have folks purchased to do the same?  Which of those worked out fine with no compatibility issues?  Which of those did not work?   I was thinking of the Momentus 500 GB 5400rpm from Seagate (ST905003N1A) but I see from the reviews at newegg.com that some driver & compatibility issues with Lenovo systems have been encountered without resolution.  Other brands out there include Samsung, Fujitsu, Hitachi and Western Digital. Many thanks! David
