Preferred Solution: WEI Unable to determine memory performance Error

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: WEI Unable to determine memory performance Error

Welcome to the 7Forums!

I just built a PC and I'm having a bit of trouble getting my Windows Experience Index rating.

I have done some research and it seems the issue has to do with the processor having more than 16 MB L3 cache. I downloaded a hotfix from Microsoft's site meant for this issue, but I still got the error. (The download page for hotfix doesn't even work anymore.)

I'm a bit lost as to what to do at this point. Is there any other solutions on how to fix this? I don't need my WEI rating but it would be nice to see what it is.

OS- Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
CPU- Intel 17-5960x
RAM- G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 DDR4-2800, 64GB
GPU- Nvidia GTX Geforce Titan X
MoBo- Asus Rampage V Extreme
SSD- Samsung 850 Evo 500 GB (x2 in RAID 0)

Answer:WEI Fails "Unable to Measure Memory Performance" (Windows 7 Pro x64)

I am having the same problem...
I have 24gb of DDR4 2400 (GSkill) RAM with Core i7-6700k CPU.

It has something to do with my memory.

Have you been able to resolve your issue? If so, could you pass it along?

It's happening more and more that my memory use will rise above 80%, even to 96% at times. What's using all that memory? According to the Task Manager, nothing. Nothing is using all that memory. And yes, it's set up to show processes from all users. Before rebooting a few minutes ago, my Physical Memory usage was at 74%; this was after terminating just about every process I thought I could get away with. Then I copied over the numbers from the Task Manager (using HyperSnap) and added them up in Excel. I was using a grand total of 612,872 K. Yet I have 4 gigs of RAM. That's nowhere near 25%, let alone 74%. Something is filling up my RAM invisibly, and I don't like that. I want to know what's happening so I can do something about it.

I'm using a no-brand PC. The motherboard is a Gigabyte H55M-S2H. 4096 MB DDR3-SDRAM. Windows 7.

Answer:I can't determine what's using up my memory.

To start post a screenshot of Task Manager - Performance tab, when the problem occurs. This should tel us where to look next.

I have the ThinkPad T60p (2007 model) and Lenovo's spec sheet says it supports up to 4GB but not on the Intel 945PM and GM chipsets. However I'm unable to tell which chipset I have. I tried Belarc and it didn't mention any of the chipsets that Lenovo mentions. Does Windows (XP) or Lenovo have a utility I can use to identify this or all of the hardware I have?

Answer:Max RAM? Unable to determine hardware

Welcome to the forum!
While your ThinkPad will recognize 4GB of RAM in BIOS, only 3GB will be usable regardless of OS used, due to a chipset limitation.
This holds true for all R60/e, T60/p, X60/s/T and Z61e/m/p/t ThinkPads.

Occasionally, my entire system will just hang and either be forced to restart, or, very rarely, it will be able to regain control and continue working. I've ran memtest and memtestx86 to determine if the cause is my ram, but both tests showed the ram is working fine. The cause could be my GPU, an ASUS R9 290, but I have already done two RMA's to have the card repaired.

To get a bit of insight on these BSOD's, my system is very unstable for most games. When running Rust, my system seems to be extremely stable and can run the game for eternity. Whilst watching videos on youtube, the system is somewhat stable, the potential of a crash is still there, but I am free to do as I please for hours. Now, when playing other games, such as: League of Legends, Garry's Mod, Fallout: New Vegas, Bordelands 2, the system is extremely unstable. The most I can get is a few hours and crashing is extremely frequent.

I have been told that doing a bios update fixes most problems of an unstable system, but my motherboard rejected the latest bios that I tried to use in the update. I am afraid I have nothing left up my sleeve, and thus, must turn to these forums.

I have used the DM Log Collector program, so the ZIP is attached below. I am hoping to have this problem resolved soon as I must escape this elo hell in League of Legends and reach my true potential: Challenjour.

Answer:Strange BSODs, Unable to Determine Cause Alone

So let's go through all that I do know and what I think I know.

System is somewhat unstable. BSODs are occurring a few times a day and seem to be reducing their occurrence as the days go on.

When the system crashes, there is not Blue Screen displayed, the system automatically restarts.

It would appear that Google Chrome could be possibly causing these crashes as I am able to play games for a longer period of time with Google Chrome closed. When it is open, the system will crash more frequently and even crash whilst I am watching videos or looking on various forums.

Some games retain stability for longer, Rust, World of Warcraft. Other games have some stability to them, League of Legends, Fallout: New Vegas. And other games will almost always crash within the first hour, Garry's Mod, Borderlands 2. So these crashes really depend on a factor. A factor that I do not know because I cannot read these .dmp files and someone has yet to view this thread and read them to me.

It's really a game of guessing and I am losing.

Been receiving numerous BSOD for months. I never was able to determine the exact cause the first time. Most of the time the error occurs during a game such as Skyrim, Diablo 3. However, sometimes the error happened when watching videos on YouTube or even while idle.

Every time I thought I fixed it, I get a new one. Most of the time it was IRQ less than or equal. I swapped to an older card and it was less frequent, but still got them. Im back to the original card and still get the errors. Sometimes going days without errors, sometimes cant even go 20 minutes without one.

Im a bit lost in the dark on this one, documentation on the web point every direction, blaming video drivers, windows programs and even wireless adapters.

this has been a long standing issue.... I have never been able to send emails using an SMTP mailer. Never!

I am on a Mac (with Parallels). I use Bluehost for hosting. I have even tried a VPN to get this resolved and nothing works. Ever. But I am getting close to the heart of the issue after many years of trying (This issue has financially crippled my business - so any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated)

Here are some of the things that I found online that may be of use...

Also I saw something relating HIVE from Microsoft which relates to user profiles

I am at my witts end trying to resolve this.

I seem to be getting the BSOD when playing games, most recently during a game of Dota2.

When the BSOD does occur my computer hangs and a weird, electronic - it's hard to describe - whining sound comes through the speakers.

I've run the SF_Diagnostic_Tool.exe as per the instructions. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:BSOD Unable to determine origin

Hi bickas.

Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known BSOD causer. Uninstall the program at first. Then download SPTD standalone installer from, and execute the downloaded file as guided below :
Double click to open it.
Click this button only:

If it is grayed out, as in the picture, there is no more SPTD in your system, and you just close the window.
Free up the startup. Windows does not need any other program to auto start with it, but the auto start programs often conflicts and causes various problems including BSODs.
Click on the Start button
Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
Select the “Startup” tab.
Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
Apply > OK
Accept then restart.
I would suggest you to uninstall Viscosity Virtual Adapter V9.1, at least as a test.

I know this things ancient, but how do I determine the memory type for a HP Pavillion V50?  I went to HP's website, Crucial, Kingston, Ebay, and nobody lists memory for it.It currently has 64 mb.  In the Bios it lists speeds of 667 Mhz and 66 Mhz.  I can pull the memory card and go to the store, but I was hoping for something a little easier.  The cpu is a Celeron and the computer has Windows ME.My friends mom wants to browse the internet and check email over a DSL line and that's it.  She's use to a phone modem, so I'm not worried about it being slow.

Answer:How to determine memory type for HP Pavillion V50

I think a V50 is a monitor, not the computer. You can download and run Everest Home to see EVERYTHING about the machine, including a model number and proper memory slots. Post that info and we can go from there. Some older models were VERY picky about the RAM they could use.

Hi to all,

This is my first post here and glad to be a part of this community.

I am currently experiencing BSOD from time to time, although not frequently. I am able to detect that my memory is the main cause of this. I have 2 512 memory modules, and I have removed one module, which I detect is the faulty one.

Now, I bought a new one, 1 GB, and now my memory totals up to 1512 MB (thats 1 gb + 512 mb). But the BSOD keeps re-appearing again. But not that frequent. This 1gb of ram is from Kingston and the other 512 is a generic one. My motherboard manual also supports the Kingston module, but I can't still pinpoint the problem.

I am asking for advice on how to clearly detect memory problems. I also tried experimenting with the Memtest program, which I still have no idea on how to use it well.

I'll try to do some other tests, like swapping the two memory modules or by removing one and checking out how it will turn out.

thanks and god bless.

Dell Inspiron 9400 LT
Win XP Pro
XP updaes will not install, and it takes 10 minutes for it to start up. Browsers don't always take me where I want to go.
I reviewed a similiar situation in another post and am going to try those tecniques.

Answer:My Dell 9400 is infected, but I am unable to determine by what.

That slow start could be caused by too many items in startup, a failing hdd, a very fragmented hdd or malware.
Suggest you backup all important files or create an image of the entire drive and store it on an external medium. If the
hdd is failing, the more you use it the more likely it will become unbootable and unable to recover files.
Use CCleaner to cleanup the crud. Once you have done that open CCleaner and click on Tools and choose Startups.
At the bottom of that page you will see a button when clicked will allow you post the list of programs presently starting up
at boot. Post that list back here.
After you have backed up the computer and posted the list of startups you can run some programs to hopefully find and
remove whatever adware and malware is on the computer.
Use the instructions for Rkill, MBAM, AdwCleaner, Junkware Removal Tool, and Eset online scanner in your previous topic for a different computer.
Make sure that all active security programs are stopped from running/ disabled before running the scans.

I do see kernel Errors in the event log but that is only about a bug check after it crashes.
I reinstalled windows
Updated the firmware on my C Drive and Motherboard
Installed windows updates
updated by graphics card drivers
Ran disk check on my C drive
I have attached all the logs. Thanks in advance for all the help.

I am currently maintaining a critical excel 2010 worksheet, that takes forever to load and forever to refresh all data.

I have tried removing formats on most of the workbooks, but it only increased the size of the file and the whole processing was even slower.

This situation will probably worsen as the file gets loaded with more data.

I'm aware that Excel 2010 has around 2GB of memory, but is there a way to determine how much memory is being utliized, so at least I can monitor whether the file is coming close to its memory limit?

I know there is a Function called INFO(type)

where for Type "memavail" displays Amount of memory available (bytes).

"memused" displays Amount of memory being used (bytes).

"totmem" displays Total memory

But this function only applies to •Excel 2007, Excel 2003, Excel XP, Excel 2000 versions.

well this link tells me no longer available in Excel 2010.
Anyway to monitor the memory usage in Excel 2010 and to speed up processes too?

Would be most appreciative if you could help me identify this ransomware.  It has infected both my mother's and my father's computers.  I am only able to provide a screen shot of the ransomware message, which I uploaded to the ID Ransomware tool.  Unable to figure out how to attach the screen shot to this post, however.
It is a white text, blue background message, with two additional warning popups from a "Microsoft Support Desk" that provides a toll free number to call.  It does not ask for money in the message, but my father (unfortunately) did call the number, at which point they asked him for a lot of information about his computer and network settings, and eventually were able to take control of his computer by doing a screen share, at which point my father says the cursor was moving around on the screen by itself and lots of windows were being opened and changes were being made.  Then, the "help desk" people demanded money and threatened to report him to the authorities if he did not pay a fee for them to fix the problems, citing evidence of "illegal activities" they had located on his computer.  My father is a 71 year old retiree with not so much as a parking ticket his entire life!

My laptop - Toshiba A135-s2276 (released in feb 2007)
Is it possible to determine for certain if my laptop supports dual-channel memory??

Currently it has 512mb and am thinking of adding another 512 (if it supports dual channel)

other users of the same laptop reported that cpu-z doesn't show any indication of dual-channel.
Any way to be certain of this? Its a new laptop so i am hoping its supports dual-channel.

Your laptop can be upgraded to upto 2 gigs of ram. However, it doesn`t support dual channel memory operation.

I have an HP Compaq d530 CMT tower computer that was given to me with all components intact except a hard drive. I put a spare hard drive in it and installed Ubuntu 9.04.

This computer is a Pentium IV; i believe the processor speed is 2.8GHz. It has 512MB of RAM in it. I'm thinking about adding some RAM; I might want to try Windows 7 on this computer, probably in a dual-boot configuration with Ubuntu.

I know the computer uses 184-pin DDR memory. says it can use either PC2700 or PC3200 and that it can use dual-channel memory. It currently has 2x256MB in it. I'd like to determine whether the existing RAM is PC2700 or PC3200. How can I do that?

Answer:How to determine type of memory installed in computer running Ubuntu

Get a working OS on the hard drive, take it to crucial and let the site scan your computer. It will tell you what memory is currently installed.
Looking at the specs here:
it appears that it came with 4 sticks of 128 DDR333 (PC-2700).
Not sure why someone might replace 4 sticks with two and still have 512MB total.
Pull a stick out and post what is printed on it.

I am currently using MemClean and it not only decreases my memory use but it also seems to improve the general performance of Windows and apps.

Is this really the case or is it just my impression?

Answer:Do Memory Cleaners improve the memory usage and performance?

It is just your impression.

Windows 7 has very good memory management on it's own and has no need for and will not benefit from any third party memory "cleaners", "optimizers", "boosters", etc. The only very questionable benefit is to make the numbers in Task Manager more attractive to those who do not understand them.

David Solomon and Mark Russinovich, both well recognized Windows experts, mentioned these programs in the Microsoft publication "Windows Internals", sixth edition. They were very critical and did not recommend these programs.

I see the following figures under "performance tab" of task manager in my computer

I understand total is total physical memory 1.78 gb something, system cache memory is "the memory being used out of 1.78 gb" and available is the remaining memory. And as far as I understand, when I add Available + system cache, it should match the Total. However, it is not in this case.

Total - 1825216
Available - 180164
System Cache 264512

Can somebody explain to me then how it works?

Answer:system cache memory + available memory under performance tab

"Available" plus "System Cache" will not normally equal "Total". If they do it will be mere coincidence.

Total is the memory available to Windows. This may be less than the total installed RAM.

Available is memory on the Standby list plus free memory. Standby memory contains code and data but is not currently in use. It can be thought of as a kind of cache.

System Cache contains the File cache plus the Standby list, plus a few other small items. Note that the Standby list appears in both Available memory and the System Cache. I know this can be confusing.

I see nothing wrong with your numbers, except that the system is under quite a bit of load for your RAM size.

I don't know what device they are talking about. All the storage devices on my PC seem to be working. Why does DM think there is a Mass Storage Controller at location PCI bus 7, device 1, function 2?

I clicked on Update Drive - search failed to find a driver and suggested none needed. I clicked the Uninstall button and the message dissapeared until I rebooted the system.

I have been using Dreamweaver for several years now and this is the first time I have received this error.

When I try to connect to the host I get a message that says the host is found. Then I get another saying it is verifying connection. This verification goes on for a while then I get "connect to host lost.' When I click on okay I get the "Dreamweaver cannot determine the remote server time."
When I click okay I get another error "An ftp error occured - cannot get remote folder information."

I have a cable modem with 2 computers set up through the modem. I uploaded Dreamweaver on the second computer and tried to connect. I get the same errors.

I have a co-worker in a different location who is able to connect to the host with no problem.

I am using Windows XP

When doing any memory performance tests on my new to me T61, Windows 7, 64bit, 4GB's memory machine, I have very slow performance results compared to any other known similar configurations. 2 well known sites I've tested at are and (Yeah, I know, most people think that site stinks)  I had 32bit Windows 7 on here with 3GB's memory and scored low with that OS also. Thought  I'd give 64bit Windows a shot. Absolutely no difference what so ever!  When testing at pcpitstop, the ONLY score that is even close to being respectable is the video (Nvidia card). Is this laptop really as bad as those scores indicate? It doesn't really seem to be running to bad, although it doesn't "feel" as fast or score as high  as my Toshiba Satellite A135 with only 2GB's memory and a 1.6ghz single core proessor. Any have any tips for getting this thing to crank like I "think" it should? Thank you

Answer:Low memory performance

Hard to say - the overall performance shouldn't be sub-par for the T61.What scores are you getting, and what do you think you should be getting?

Hi guys,

I'm a bit confused as to if this is the norm or not. At the moment I'm running with 4gb or ddr3 and 2gb readyboost usb plugged in.

Nothing is running in the background, can you guys tell me if my memory is looking okay? I'm just a bit concerned about that 'free' reading.

Answer:Memory performance, I'm not sure?

Hello Rob, and welcome to Seven Forums.

This is normal. Windows 7 will make use of any available memory by preloading it using "Superfetch" with what it thinks you will need next to help speed up performance by having it ready to go from memory on the fly instead of having to load it from the hard drive each time as requested. If you do not need it, then it will just dump it from memory when it needs the memory for something else automatically. Superfetch learns as it goes to help determine what and when you run and open stuff to help better improve what it loads in memory as well.

Hope this helps,

Question: Performance memory

How much benefit would you gain by opting for more expensive memory like OCR, Corsair etc over basic 184 pin DDR? I will be building an SLI system but am not sure if I would get any real benefit by paying an extra £50 for Crucial's Ballistix memory.

Answer:Performance memory

You are not likely to receive any noticeable difference unless you are into high performance gaming - even then, there will be many other negative impacts on performance.Such memory is useful for something like a server where any error could cause an immediate problem - save your £50 for something else.

Lately when I click on a folder it takes about 10 seconds to actually show the icons in that folder. Like for instance when I click on the "Games" folder in Vista to view all my games I have installed it will take longer then it use to to open up. Just a white box and then eventually I will see the icons.

I had my PC OC at 3.00 on stock settings, meaning I did not adjust any volts or other settings. I just bumped it up to 3.00GHz and I set the RAM at the lowest speed. I thought maybe that was why so I went back to stock settings, still doing it.

It's annoying. My computer is so fast but this hiccup is bothering me. specs in sig

Edit: *scratching head now* I think it's just this games app folder. Nothing else seems to lag. IDK maybe it's just running fine atm but could start acting up again.

Answer:Is this bad memory performance I am seeing?

you know I had this problem with 'my music' folder for a while but the problem just sort of went away and all the folders are loading up fine now. My music folder has 178gb of stuff in it so that could have been a bit of the problem. Maybe windows indexed the folder some how and thus sped up the time takes to load it in my case... I dunno

If you can't find a solution maybe the problem with go away like it did for me. lol

The Problems:
I'm sure You're quite familiar with the problems that occur when Windows has been installed for a while...

- When I want to shut down the system it takes a while (until the shut-down menu opens, and after I've pressed the red button, it takes ages to log off) - to boot up however is quite fast

- The Task Manager usually shows about 700 MB of memory usage, so whenever I do anything (except for browsing) the systems starts to swaping memory

So basically the system is just "slow"...

HP Printer Software
ATI Catalyst Management Thingy

ICQ 5 Oficial Client

I also quite often have Azureus downloading something in the background and Opera (my default Browser) is also always running...

Not too long after I turn on the PC, I receive a message about virtual memory being too low and the MS OS is modifying it. After working on the internet, email, and Office applications, the computer bogs down considerably. Twice, MS Word just left the screen (disappeared) and wouldn't start up again. I couldn't start anything (My Computer, email, Office applications). Sometimes I'll get an error message, "Not enough memory to load program." I have to Restart or Reboot to get the PC to work properly and applications running. Then it starts to bog down again, and the cycle continues. I also get an error message, " HP OfficeJet COM Event Manager has encountered a problem and needs to close." It happens only once each new start up and began occurring with the other problem(s).

I have accomplished all of the required actions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST webpage. The PC is still sluggish, moreso over time. HP OfficeJet COM error message still appears. Three of the four files asked for in the READ & RUN ME FIRST instructions are attached. The fourth (HiJackThis log) will be sent separately. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

Hello! I have a doubt about memory...

which memory performs better? a DDR2 800 with 4-4-4-15 or a DDR2 1066 with 5-5-5-15 2T, and what does that 2T means?

Thanks for your input

Answer:Memory performance question

i say you wont tell a difference, you might see a difference if your benchmarking. if you plan on overclocking then the DDR2 1066 will let you get higher FSB.

I've got a problem MGs.

Average Sunday afternoon, ran all anti-spyware programs, disk cleaners, you know the usual. Well then i went and defraged, i use AusLogics. Ran fine, though usually it only takes like 3 min to defrag it, this time it was taking forever. I realized it was defraging one big program: drwtsn32.log. Took about a half an hour to defrag that whole thing. Wasn't sure what it was so i did research and found out that it starts automatically when an application error occurs. Is this right??? Not sure. Well it finished defraging and it found about 1000 fragmented files, little higher than usual but not bad. But the report said that i had defraged +19%. I was like "whoah", first time its ever been that high.

So I was curious. Went to PC Pitstop, ran full test and found a problem. Says that I have an "unusual low memory performance". Heres what it said: "Memory performance of this system 6650 megabytes per second, is significantly lower than average. Systems with the same processor and amount of memory typically perform at a level of 8988 MB/s".

Don't know what problem I have, or if the drwtsn32.log is related to the problem PC Pitstop found. Need some help here MGs. Thx :major

I believe on Crucial's website, they stated that putting an ECC memory into a consumer desktop can decrease the computer's performance up to 2%.

I have a few questions if someone doesn't mind answering.

1. I most likely have non-parity memory right now. (2) 128MB SDRAM PC100 sticks are in my computer. Can I take out the 2 sticks and add in just a single 512MB unbuffered ECC stick?

2. Is Crucial saying there is a 2% decrease with the same amount of memory? Or does it apply to any amount? example: 512MB ECC vs. 512MB non-parity.

or 512MB ECC vs. xxxMB non-parity

3. Adding the 512MB memory will increase the memory capacity by 256MB (should improve performance), but it will be the ECC memory (should decrease performance), so in the end, do i lose performance, or gain?

4. Unbuffered vs. Register. How do know which one my motherboard will take? I'm not even sure which one I have right now. Since I have an el cheapo 2yrs old Emachine, i'm guessing it has the registered memory? Who knows...

Only reason why I'm considering the ECC is because my friend is selling me his 512MB stick very cheap. Otherwise I wouldn't get any memory because for the price he is selling me his stick, i can by a 128MB stick, but my computer only has 2 slots and they are both being used up

sorry for making this thread a bit long

I recently added 2GB of memory to my P4P800 for a total of 4GB, and immediately began experiencing visible performance problems most noticeably in games. After much troubleshooting, I discovered that setting Maximum Memory in System Configuration (msconfig.exe) to 3300MB (I didn't test every 1MB below the limit, by the way), down from the limit of 3328 (using 1 or 2MB less than this still resulted in performance problems...) restored performance to pre-4GB levels. I'm aware of x86 architecture not being able to utilize 4GB of memory, so this isn't about that. Additional oddities include PCI Latency Timer (of all things...) effecting performance and lower memory timings being more stable than high... What's going on here? Is there any way to avoid adding a memory limit?

Answer:Poor Performance With 4GB Memory

You could possibly be running into problems with all four dimm slots filled with memory. In fact Corsair usually recommends downclocking your memory when filling all four dimm slots. See here: Full dimm slots - Please school me. - The Corsair Support Forums. Follow the links posted by DereKT.

Also be aware that the more memory your v-card(s) have, the less system memory you have for non video system resources under a 32bit system since 32bit OS' are limited to 4gig of memory. See here:

Other then that, make sure you have "manually" set the recommended memory timings and voltage as stated by the RAM manufacturer.

Recently I've noticed my system becoming pretty sluggish when running more than a couple of apps (internet explorer, the odd game etc). I'm running a Vista Home Premium set up with a Pentium Dual Core 3GHZ chip and 2GB RAM which should have (and previously did have) more than enough grunt.

When I look at Task Manager after startup (with little running) I can see that the Physical Memory utilisation is up at 70-75% and in the performance tab, I have approx 4MB free (and the usage history graph is up at approx 1.5GB). I'm very experienced with pc's so I know about Vista's superfetching etc, but the system is dog slow.

I've disabled everything that I don't need at start up (as well as some services which I won't use). I've run AVG virus scan, Spybot and AdAware repeatedly, along with CCleaner and Disk Defrag. Security Task manager doesn't show me anything suspicious either. I've uninstalled anything that I won't need, and still it's running incredibly slow. The windows experience score is still at 4.8, so in theory the system is sound. I can't see what's utilising all of this memory in the Processes so I'm stuck.

One of the things that slow down is teh items you specfied above, the harddrive clogging up and memory. Not sure if its worthwhile to fork out some extra cash onto another harddrive as ur current is quite small for the heavy new applications. As for the memory it woudl be a good investment although you should take into account the other components you have, i.e. processor, motherboard, etc as they could be causing issues to.Try disabling a few startup applications, delete internet temp files, there was a good pc advisor mag last year that provided help on cleaning up and improving your pc's performance. Or I tink it was last year

I have a question about my ram. I'm not quite sure if it's under performing and was wondering if anybody could give some advice about this. I have 4 gigs OCZ SLI-Ready PC2-6400 800 mhz DDR2 ram. When using SiSoftware Sandra Lite XII, in my benchmark results i recieved a Int Memory Bandwidth score of 5459 mb/s and a Float Memory Bandwidth score of 5464 mb/s. My memory timings are set at 4-4-4-15 2T. I also get a score of 5.5 for ram with windows experience index. Are those average memory bandwidth scores for the type of ram i'm using, or should they be higher? Other info is my FSB: DRAM is 2:3, not sure if that makes a huge difference in performance.

When I first turn on my P.C right clicking on My Computer and the the Performance tab shows 80% free system resources. As I use it over time this goes down to about 67% even if I close all the applications I've opened since start up. Surely it should go back to 80%? Everything then takes longer to load, windows ponder opening for while etc.Do things stay resident in memory even when not used and don't clear until reboot? Is the Swap File anything to do with it or Virtual Memory?I had a program called Ram Cleaner that recovered ram (naturally) on request. Are these things any good? Am I using the right thing? Can anyone recommend downloads for improving performance?

Answer:Memory & Performance Managers

I found something called Ram Booster in the downloads section. Anyone else used this?

In the Windows Task Manager Performance tab their are values for memory: Total, Cached, Available and Free. What exactly do these mean? Thanks.

Answer:Task Manager - Memory Performance

Total = is all the RAM you have

Cached = is the part where previously used programs or data are stored for a possible reuse (loads faster than from disk). That can be reused any time by active programs/data when needed. It also contains the so called Modified (see below)

Available = is the sum of cached and free

Free = is what it says. Nobody is using it .

You get a better picture of your RAM usage if you look into the Resource Monitor > Memory tab. The colored picture splits it nicely (see picture below). Everything in blue (light or dark) is available, There you also see 3 additional categories:

Hardware Reserved = is RAM that is needed by the hardware - e.g. for an on-board graphics

In Use = is what the system and data currently uses

Modified = is some temporary storage area where the system did not get a chance yet to write the data back to disk.

Hi,My laptop is G580, with 2gb ram and the procesor is intel 1000M. I want to know if i put 2gb more ram to work in dual channel i will see an increase in gpu.I usualy play fifa14, in the game I have 27-30 fps.If i have dual channel memory woud my fps incrrease, lets say to 32-35 fps?

Answer:Performance gain from dual memory

Hi Lorzand,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I?m sorry to inform you that upgrading the RAM in your G580 Laptop will not increase the FPS (Frames Per Second) rate as much as upgrading GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) or Processor in the computer, as an alternative , I suggest you to check the compatibility of the game once before playing it:

Hi, great site! Thanks. My first post so i`ll just...

BIOS tells me I have 1 gig of physical memory but Windows tells me I have 3.
I actually have 4. Since I noticed this discrepency my HP with DSL has become
slower than dial-up.
I have tried most of the on-line scans, Pit Stop, Norton, House Cleaning, Stinger...
They all tell me that my memory is too slow responding to a request interupt - in
DMA, I guess. So, I think the request times out?? Web pages sometimes takes
4 or 5 minutes to load or don`t and if I have two windows up it freezes. Warning
pop-ups saying there is not enough memory to complete the request.

Man, I haven`t got a clue. Pretty new computer but HP tech support did a remote
and said the L caches weren`t enabled but BIOS says they are! HP put me
on hold and never came back.

Would anyone have any idea about this? Thanks, so much.

Answer:Memory Discrepencies And Lousy Performance

Windows won't recognize more than about 3.25 to 3.5 gB of RAM (this is due to how it allocates address space) on a 32 bit system. 64 bit systems will recognize the entire amount.I don't know if this will affect you, but several high end HP's that I've worked on have had BIOS issues with the hard drive recognition order. Be advised that these were all IDE systems without RAID. The fix was to disable all IDE channels that did not have anything on them (set it to None in the BIOS), then to move the boot drive over to be the Primary Master. I'd try something similar with your HP, but am not that familiar with RAID.Next, I'd scour the information about your motherboard that's available both from HP and from the maker of the motherboard. Let us know the exact make and model of your system and we should be able to locate a boatload of info about it. Is the RAM all DDR2 and are all chips the same size and model? Have you run Memtest86 on the RAM to check it? (free here: )Finally, I'd do some in-depth checking of the settings in the RAID array to see if there's something there that's causing this.EDIT: I have 4gB of RAM also (an MSI mobo), and haven't noticed any problem with the unrecognized RAM. I wonder if there could be an issue with the unrecognized RAM interfering with the workings of the rest of the RAM - haven't found an answer for that. You may want to try it with only 2 gB of RAM in the syst... Read more

I have 4 DDR slots on my Motherboard. They are various speeds, with the slowest one being PC2100, however the mainboard has a memory clock which i set to 333mhz (or PC2700). Thats not the problem.

I can set them up with 256MB x 4 sticks of RAM for a total of 1 GB, and have the dual-channeled.
I can set them up with 256MB x 3 and 512MB x 1.

Would it be faster if I dual channeled all of the RAM together or add an extra 256 MB of RAM and NOT dual channel them?

New to the forums and have been looking at some old posts about performance and thought I would inquire about a similar problem, but wanted to know exactly what I can do (screen shots to provide) to best help others help solve said problems. I will post an over view shot and one of the memory tab (in descending order) as I have seen on some of the other threads. If there are other screen shots or other information I can produce to help this solution please let me know.

Usually I might have 50 processes running when idle so I'm not sure if there are others that do not need to be running or some that may be totally unnecessary to even have. I'll be honest I'm not the most computer savvy guy so I can't tell you what exactly this laptop has in it (Ram total, OS etc.) as it was just given to me, so I apologize for not putting those specs up front. I suppose I'm really just looking to see if this computer is running as efficiently as possible and how to monitor it's effectiveness in the future.

Thank you for any help

Answer:Performance Effectiveness/Memory Usage

Welcome to Seven Forums bberkey.

To view your basic computer information, open the Start menu, right-click Computer, then click Properties. You should now be able to see what OS is installed, if SP1 is also installed, your total memory, etc. There are several free programs you can install that will provide much greater details about your computer. Things like the name of the manufacturer of the memory chips, the hard drive, the motherboard, computer temperatures, etc. A lot of folks here recommend Speccy.

Windows 7 is pretty good at sorting things out and making best use of memory. One of the tutorials here explains what else can be done to optimize Windows 7. Not everything will apply to your computer and the old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" certainly applies. Unless you're having a specific problem sometimes it's best to leave things alone. If you have other questions folks will always be here to help.

Hi all

Just installed win 8 the other day, everything ran smooth and system using allmost no Memory only 1.7 to 3gigs used.

then i figured id try some of my games, started out with no problems.. 1 hour of world of tanks and then i switched over to BF3 after around 2hours it started to lag out every few second.. so closed it and started Diablo 3, the lag started instantly.

tried rebooting the pc, still lagging out..

noticed that even after i reboot it had started to pile data to my memory, now running at 11.5gigs used and instant lag in my games??.

Anyone had similar problems?

my specs are:
core i7 950 @3.07Ghz
Asus Sabertooth x58
12Gigs Kingston DDR3
AMD (asus) Radeon 6970 with 2Gigs GDDR5
120Gigs Intel X-m25 SSD for system and my favorite games(BF3, World of tanks atm)
2x500Gigs disk in raid 0 for storage/secondary games (Diablo 3, Eve online, various steam games)
FIX so far:
turned off superfetch from services.msc and prefetcher in the registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

Set the value of EnablePrefetcher to 0

rebooted, lag issue is now gone.. and its back using around 1.7 to 3gigs after a reboot.. only played BF3 for around 1hour, so not sure if it holds up for longer periods game time

Answer:Game performance/Memory Issues

Well; BF3 is compatible with Windows 8... Windows Compatibility for Battlefield 3 version 1.3: EA. Drivers, Updates, Downloads
Could be a bug or something... Also, keep in mind that Windows 8 is still not complete = nothing is perfect!

So i have got 2x2GB of Nanya RAM modules and want to increase performance because Firefox eats a lot of RAM. I know that buying 2 new 4GB Kingston modules would make sense, but i will need to disassemble laptop and put Nanya modules aside to collect dust on shelf. But i was thinking of saving and buying 8GB ReadyBoost flash memory SD or small USB thumbdrive.

It will be cheaper and will not cause hassle and besides, Nanya memory modules are OEM that came with laptop already.

Well I was browsing NewEgg for alternatives (just in case) to XMS, and I rememberd OCZ memory...

I found these that fit my needs (so far):

(Approxamatly same specs as the XMS I was looking at)

Then the high-freq stuff...

Anyone reccamend this brand and/or these specific modules?

Again, (and I know I'm annoying people with this...) it needs to be compatable with NF7 . There arent enough reviews on newegg on the modules and I haven't seen any websites that give me the compatability information I need.... so if anyone can point me to one....

I have a Toshiba Tecra M2, 512MB memory running Windows XP Pro SP1. Motherboard was replaced by Toshiba last week including BIOS version 1.5. Computer is running very slow, choppy graphics, etc. Hard disk has been defragged and has 27GB available. Checked BIOS and both Level 1 and Level 2 cache are enabled.

Ran PC Pitsop and received the following warning;

1. Unusually low memory performance - 1120 MB/s. Same systems typically perform at 5492MB/s.

Before I descend into Toshiba Tech Service hell anybody have a clue as to what could be wrong???????

I'm simply going to SWAG this and suggest that you install (or reinstall) the motherboard chipset drivers before you do anything else; once you've done that, reboot the system and let us know what happens.

I just installed windows 7 rtm 64bit and I really love it. But i got a performance problem under certain circumstances and hope u can help me
First, here is a list of my relevant hardware:
AMD X2 4200+ @2.7 GHz
System drive: 2 x 250 GB (raid 0, about 90 MB/sec reading)
graphics: 9800gt
2 USB Flash drives dedicated to Ready Boost (2 GB and 512 MB)

Now let me describe my problem: I have to run 10 virtual machines on this PC. I use VMWare Server, each virtual machine is set to 128 MB RAM (lowest value possible, any lower values result in excessive swapping). All virtual machines are set up on another harddrive (200 GB, about 40 MB/sec reading), so they don't affect my system drive.
Performance is normally just fine in Win 7 (the virtual machines eat up very little CPU power). But when i use very demanding applications, e.g. Crysis, performance becomes a nightmare (framedrops, game is not playable). The LEDs for my flashdrives and my harddrive are flashing all the time. I guess all my Ram is used and win 7 swaps the data needed for crysis instead of swapping my virtual machines. Only way to play crysis is to stop my virtual machines (which is not acceptable).
In Win XP that wasn't such a big problem, there was some swapping for about 1 minute when i started crysis, then performance was just fine.

Any hints?

P.S.: i know my english isn't the best, hope u understood my eplanations

Dear Forum 7 Experts,

I have an Excel application that uses 3 GB of memory when it is idle. When is is running the app will use up to 10 GB of memory. My memory configurations are as follows:

Physical Memory

Installed32 GBExcel App10 GBOther Processes3GBCached2 GBFree Memory17 GBKernel Memory

Paged377 MBNon Paged123 MBThe Excel application seems to run okay for the first hour. But, since the app uses more memory, as time progresses, it eventually slows down to a snails pace. The program is written impeccably to conserve memory but its associated and growing tables of data would seem to be too much for the system to handle.
Since my workstation can handle up to, I think, about 600 GB of memory, I am wondering if i need to purchase more memory or whether there is something else i can try to relieve the performance bottleneck.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have received my new X220 (i7/4G/320GB-7200) this week - and i love it. But i have a question that might seem nerdy ..... all performances in windows experience index is fine, except the memory performance.  I only reach 5.9 on the scale.I recently made a stationary PC with i5-750 that have the same bus-speed as the i7-2620 => 1333Mhz.  Using RAM with low latency (CL7) i could reach 6.9 in the memory index. So my questions are:  Is the standard RAM in the X220 with CL9 timing?  IF i change the RAM to CL7 (or lower) RAM, is it possible change the latency timing in the BIOS?  I cannot find any RAM timing adjustments in the BIOS parameters i have access to.  OR - will the system/processor find the best possible timing automaticly? Best regardsHenrik - Denmark

Is the 42% reading for the Video Memory if so thats to be expected as shares RAM is not as fast as Dedicated RAM built into a seperate Video Card. Aso the shared RAM will be removed from the total RAM installed.

If your mobo supports dual channel RAM then there is a slight improvement in memory performance, but in a recent memory test in either computer shopper or pcw (cannot remember which) the difference was sufficiently marginal that it hardly seems worthwhile if it costs more. On the other hand, if you have two sticks of RAM and one goes west, your pc will still run. If your single stick goes you ar up a gum tree. Not very likely I know, but with computers the law of Sod does seem to operate!
