I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have had problems with windows update for a long time and keep trying hotfixes etc.
recently tried to download adobe pdf reader which threw up ox80073712 / 1935 error.
tried to scannow from elevated command which does not function.
bought this laptop with win 7 already installed so have no discs to reinstall with.
any suggestions ?
Thanks

Answer:windows update and scannow not working

If you did not receive disks, you should have a restore partition on the hard drive and instructions on how to return your laptop to factory settings. Instructions on how to run this facility should be in your documentation, but if not, press F8 continually on switching on your laptop and one of the options will be to repair the system.
Be warned that running this facility will destroy all your data, so make sure that you have it all backed up before you run the facility

When I run SFC /scannow. I get this error message: Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache. Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD now.
Problem is that I don't have one. I have a Dell lap top that came with XP installed. I have since upgraded via Windows update to SP3. Please help.

Answer:SFC /scannow. I get error message

You can usually create a Bart PE CD from the files installed on your computer - This information is available to do the process -Although it will never have any Microsoft backup it still provides a 'basic insurance' if you need to re-install - Some do not like the process but it is available on the open web - You may still need to Slipstream into SP3 using Paul Thurrotts methods -EDIT - Dell and their dealears need shooting for doing this - You should Always get a CD !!!!That is why I am not against doing a BartsPE CD -

Hi All,
I have a brand new Surface Pro 4 tablet that comes with the Windows 10 Professional. So I have update it to the latest using Internet directly to get all available update last week on 11th March 2016 with no big issue. But the SFC end up in error like below ?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C:\>sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As per company policy, all Windows 10 must be Enterprise Edition for Bitlocker feature,
So I upgrade it to Windows 10 1511 Enterprise with SW_DVD5_WIN_ENT_10_1511_64BIT_English_MLF_X20-82288.ISO file, which bring the Winver to 10586.164, However the image is always end up corrupted as the above again ?
is this normal or I shouldn't need to worry ? or is this just Windows 10 bug after any Windows Update ?
Any help and sugestion would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I am having a few issues with my windows 10 like not being able to open cmd elevated. I was able to do it in task mgr, but when I put in the command for sfc this is the error I got
"windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation"
Why is this not working? Thanks in advance.

when I run sfc /scannow the following window pops up:

Quote:
sfc.exe - Bad Image
C:\Windows\system32\sqmapi.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
[OK]

When I click "OK" the window closes and sfc begins, but aborts at around 25% with the message:

Quote:
Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

Any suggestions?

NOTE: this may be related to another problem which caused internet access to fail (Network & Sharing center said "No Network Available"), and prevented the Diagnostics Policy and Firewall services from running. Those problems were resolved by running the following instructions in a command window

Quote:
net localgroup administrators localservice /add
net localgroup administrators networkservice /add

and running MajorGeeks' Windows Repair Tool.

All malware scans are clean (MS Security Essentials, Malwarebytes, Adwcleaner), the Firewall is on, and everything appears to be working fine, but SFC won't run, and that concerns me.

Hi all, I am having a frustrating issue at the moment, where my pc is taking 20 minutes to boot - this is primarily because it keeps trying to install several windows updates, gets to 30% after multiple restarts, then fails, and says "recovering original windows installation" and finally boots up. It then presents a list of failed updates. This is below.
These all see to be for Windows version 1709. Can anyone tell me if my issue is possibly because, acording to my system I have version 1703 - and if so, how do I get it to 1709 so i can install these and move on?
Any advice please? This is driving me nuts. The only thing I have found online is recommendations of a full re-install, which i dont want to do, not with hundreds of Gb of games, and all the setup for HOTAS, Oculus and everything to do again, that will always be last resort for me.

I have tried:
Uninstalling BitDefender and trying again. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.Using the Windows Upgrade Assistant.Running updates in Safe Mode.

Everything I have tried has the same result. Any help would be appreciated, as a re-install would take me a couple of days to get everything back to where it is now. Other than these updates the system is perfectly stable and runs well.

Answer:Windows update failing - version 1709 Update - no real error message.

7) Check the drive to make sure that there is > 25 GB free space

9) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
10) sfc /scannow
11) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
12) chkdsk /scan
13) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

14) Remove all unused SATA devices (only have one drive available during the windows upgrade)

Hello everyone!
After my first failed attempt to post my problem (since I posted on another person's thread... sorry about that ), here I am again.
I have been having a "Configuring Windows Update 32% complete" and shortly afterwards the "Welcome" messages on startup and the "Preparing to configure Windows Update.." followed by "Shutting down" on shutdown for quite some time. Of course, Windows Update isn't working and the "sfc /scannow" command always comes up with the "There is a sytem repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again". As you might have guessed already, restarting doesn't help and I am stuck on this endless circle.
So, as requested on the instructions, I have followed the required steps and here are my comments:
1) SURT installed succesfully and quite fast.
2) Commands "sfc /scannow" and "sfc/ verifyonly" come up with the message mentioned above so I moved on to option three, only to find a .txt file of 0 bytes and empty inside. So I guess this step didn't proceed as planned...
3) I have removed the older CBSPersist cab files and I will post them right afterwards, since the CBS.zip file including them is about 37MB.
Without further ado, please find attached the .zip file.
Thanks in advance for your time.

Answer:Error code 80070002, sfc/ scannow command not working

Following with 2 out of 5 of the older CBSPersist cab files, compressed. 3 to go.

I have checked out all the help information but keep coming up with dead ends so i decided to turn to you guys for some help. may help you out. When you try to install driver updates from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site, the installation may not succeed. This problem may occur if you have a large number of INF files in your %windir%\Inf folder. Hello,I have a very frustrating problem.Windows XP SP2Dell Dimension 2400Dialup connectionIE7For several reasons, I manually update my computer rather than using auto updates. I was attempting to do so last night and all day today without success. I last updated back in April. It says that it needs to check for the latest updating software, then says that I need to download and install the latest updating software and there is a button "Update Windows" that I need to click on which I do.The text now says something about downloading updating software and percentage numbers appear: It pauses on 67%, 84%, 92%, then goes to 100%. Then it is copying files, then it is registering. Each goes to 100% fairly quickly, then I get an error page. Hello,

My wife's laptop is showing the above error message when trying to download windows updates. This started recently, but I have a feeling it is related to my son downloading a bunch of programs and malware with Minecraft back in October of 2014. Ya Ya Ya, there's over a hundred threads like this, ...

Anyway, started getting this error message a few days ago, and done a lot of searching on this error message, apparently it's not, uncommon.

In particular, the (currently) 4 updates that are being affected are:
Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 (KB3173428) - Error 0x80070543Security Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 (KB3172729) - Error 0x80070543Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 (KB3174060) - Error 0x80070543Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 (KB3176493) - Error 0x80070543

The actions I've taken to date are:
Uninstalled firewall program (comodo)Uninstalled anti-virus (Avast)Reset the windows update catalog on local machine.

So the above errors are with the above done.

What other steps should I be taking to resolve the issue?

Below is notations for when I actually add to this thread.
Attempted to use the troubleshooter, no dice.

Ok so 15 minutes ago i logged onto my PC (XP) , and saw windows ask me for an automatic update. So I installed it, then rebooted my computer. Now right after it starts loading, it shows me an error message.

lsass.exe - System Error.

The endpoint format is invalid.

The only thing i can click is OK and it restarts my computer and shows me the message again.

If you need more information, please let me know because I need that computer back up tonight.

Hi all,

I had this error on my two laptops and desktop at the same time! I was able to get one laptop and the desktop working by repeatedly running the WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab until all the errors were gone and updates would work. Can't get seem to get it to work on the other laptop. I have run WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab to the point were there are no errors but Windows Update hangs on the updates. Now I'm back to getting the errors in WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab as follows:

Windows Update Error 0x800b0100
Cryptographic service components are not registered

Attached the following files included in report: CheckSUR.log, dism.log and output.txt

I've now spent DAYS fixing these three computers. Any help with this last one very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello Logrady,
Part of the package for KB2929437,
Follow link No2 in this link, obviously use KB2929437 not the 1 in the link.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2700601.

Or if your not really happy using that method
Uninstal it, from an elevated command mode

wusa /uninstall /kb:2929437

Then install using the standalone method.

I am having a problem with one certain windows update:

Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 for x64-based Systems

It has installed at least 30 times. Right after I install it, it pops right back up to install again. Why does it keep doing that if it installed successfully? Is it bad that it installed that many times? I don't understand. Will you help me please?
Thank you
Fay

There are no error messages with the windows updates.
I tried to upload the CBS.log but i keep getting this error message:
Server Error
500 - Internal server error.

There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.

How do I get the file to you?

Answer:Repeated windows update; no error message

The 500 error when attempting to upload is almost always because the file you're attempting to upload is too large - strip out the CBSPersist files until the resulting file is less than 8MB, then try again.

Make sure that you follow these instructions,...

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

I am actually having an error using the SimplePass software at all.  Worked fine up until a day ago.  Then all of a sudden the fingerprint reader doesn't read anything.  I've uninstalled, reinstalled (and currently have a case going with HP support) but I have a HP Pavilion dv6t-6c00 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC running Windows 7 Home Professional 64bit.  Now, whenever I go to Biometric Devices (the device is working properly, by the way) and select "use your fingerprint with Windows", SimplePass opens.  I select Yes, select the finger I want to use, enter password, and then it says "it looks like you're having trouble, would you like to try again?" before I can even swipe my finger.  I click "yes" and then click the finger I want to use, enter the password, and right back to "it looks like you're having trouble...".  If I ever select "no", it just closes SimplePass. Any ideas?  I'm not getting ANY error messages, the device is working properly, it's been cleaned and everything.  Not sure what would be causing this all of a sudden.

I have had my Dell 8700 for little over a year and have had problems from the beginning.  I am 72 years old, and I am at my wits end!!!

A hard drive was replaced in the summer of 2015, but I have still had problems with the computer shutting down and my having to refresh it to factory setting.

I thought updating to Windows 10 would solve some problems, and I did this in October, 2015.  Everything was fine until a couple of months ago.  The end result was when I tried to refresh the computer to factory defaults, it went back to 8.0 or 8.1, and I evidently lost something in the process.
Now, I cannot update to Windows 10 and when I tried to resinstall the Dell Operating System, I get for both:  "WE COULDN'T UPDATE THE SYSTEM RESERVED PARTITION."
I DO HAVE A SYSTEM BACKUP ON 20 CDS (MADE WHEN I HAD WINDOWS 10).  Could I reinstall the system with these backupdisks?  How do I do that?  I also have a Dell 2 Boot USP stick, I have a recovery stick, too, but it semed that when I used this, I received a message that not all files were recovered
What should I do at this point?

Answer:Error message when trying to update to Windows 10 or to reinstall operating system 8.1: We couldn't update the system reserved partition."

On MBR disk, Windows 10 requires a 500MB system reserved partition, while 100MB in Windows 7, so you can try to extend system reserved partition.
In disk management, you can only extend partition using the unallocated space next to its right side. so even if you shrink D: drive, the option to extend the efi partition is still grayed out. My suggestion is to use a third party software, AOMEI Partition Assistant, both the standard (free) or the Professional(paid) version can extend partition as long as there is unallocated space on that hard drive. to see more information read:
Fix "We Couldn?t Update the System Reserved Partition" Error

Have you tried this?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058
If not, try it "let me fix it myself section", reboot then see if anything has changed.

Meanwhile, I'll keep searching.
Does the computer have WinPatrol on it? (I ask because on one of the 4 computers running the paid version, I had trouble with updating and I needed to change something in WinPatrol).

I had another thought: turn off the antivirus when tryong to install a Windows update. Sometimes an av program can be too aggressive. Be sure you only go to the MS update site when turning off the av. If an update installs, turn on the av again before you go any where else on the internet.

My wife's machine works fine.
And it shuts fine.
But after the last update KB3176938 there is a "not shut properly" message in the event viewer.

On my own machine there is a new wrinkle too: previously when I shut down I could bring the computer back by tapping on the keyboard but now I have to push the on/off buttom on the computer.

I am adding my machine into the mix because something has happened to the shutdown sequence with this new build. While it affects the two computers differently it is the same process that is at issue.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you sure that you were not previously putting your system to SLEEP vs SHUTDOWN. As you describe it now, that is what should happen. When I put either of my W10 systems asleep, a single key stroke will wake them up.

This happened quickly. First thing I noticed was during a Windows Update. I had recently reformatted my hard drives and had a LOT of programs to download and install. It went well until the end when it refused to install three security updates and another update ( not sure which). Microsoft was stepping me through things - running "FixIt" and the Microsoft WIndows Readiness Tool. This had no effect.
I also ran system file checker. NOthing has worked. On the contrary, things appear to have gotten worse. WHen I would try to log onto ebay, or most any secure website I would get an error message - something to do with SSL. I tried it with Internet Exlorer ( I was using Mozilla Firefoxat first). Using explorer I was allowed to enter secure sites but other things stopped working.
None of the links in Outlook emails work anymore - I get a "general failure message".

I've ran with Norton, Microsoft Essentials, Malware Bytes Anti malwarem - all came back clean.

Can you help like you did before with a problem I had a year or so ago!?!?

Thanks in advance - you're the best.

I hope someone can please help or provide me with some information/assitance.
I have trawled the internet and am ending up being confused/blinded by science

On Saturday my laptop was working correctly but from then I can only access my desktop - i.e. nothing from the start menu this ranges from the control panel to "my docs" - I get the looped windows explorer has stopped working error message.

I can access the internet and any programmes that are on my quick launch and programmes that are on my desktop.

I have tried dragging a shortcut from the start menu eg my music to the desktop but this doesn't work.

Another thing I have noticed is that when I turn on my laptop there is a HP update to run for "HP smart web printing", when I run this it gets halfway through the instillation then fails due to: "hp smart web printing add on for internet explorer (process id 5192)" - it tells me I need to close this but I can't see that it is running anywhere, now I don't think I had this problem until this appeared, but can't say for sure, it maybe a coincidence? This may also be unrelated but I thought it was best to mention?

I have tried task manager but it doesn't show that this programme is running - or at least I haven't the knowledge to find it

I have tried running various virus removal programmes/registry cleaning programmes but nothing has changed.
I tried to run the system restore in safe mode and went back as far a... Read more

This is an add on for IE, open IE and go to Tools>Manage Add-ons>enable-disable add-ons.

Several Programs have given me this pictured message. Clicking on .exe icon or shortcut or created file in a particular application causes this message to appear. I can open the program by right clicking the .exe icon in Programs Folder and selecting Troubleshoot Compatibility but the most recent option it gives me in the listing is Windows XP and I've been in Win 7 for over a year! This just started happening after the Updates of 11/11/15, so I'm wondering if something became corrupted because of those. Publisher 2010, Team Viewer, Quark have all been victims of this. I basically cannot open these applications by clicking on an already-created file with the correct extension icon. I am told it "stopped working."

Answer:Error message box: Publisher for Windows has stopped working.

See if you have been offered KB3097877 again.
If so, install it and see if it fixes the issue.
(See this post for more info.)

If that fails to fix the issue, then consider doing a System Restore.

Let me start by saying that I'm an old hat at trying to get older software to run on subsequent Windows operating systems, having been at it for about 20 years.
I have a particular brand of educational software I'm having the same problem with, and I don't seem to be able to get around it. Other than virtualisation, does anyone have any tricks up their sleeve for getting a program to work following this particular issue? Am hoping an update to the .NET Framework in the future may fix it, should I hold my breath?

Hello all
2 days ago I installed the latest updates from Microsoft. Then as standard procedure I ran sfc /scannow and it failed (was unable to repair corrupt files found).

I recovered my system (a few times...) using a previous saved image until eventually narrowed down the culprit(s) to the Optional Updates, but there were too numerous to start testing/verifying one by one, e.g. installing the update, running sfc /scannow and if failing restoring the system and starting allover again.

Did a new clean installation, but at some point during updates the same issue popped up again, sfc /scannow failed and was unable to repair corrupt files found.

Then I ran (as Administrator) dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth which resolved the issue, only to have it re-appear after installing the rest of the available updates.

Re-running the command successfully repaired the corrupt files, but now the question: Why?

No other applications were installed, all the drivers were through Windows update.

Any thoughts?

Answer:sfc /scannow failed after Windows Update

SFC not being able to repair corrupt files is not due to the updates. Very often SFC cannot repair files. In that case run SFC 3 times. If it is still unable to repair files, you must do a repair install.

So, recently I've noticed that I have been unable to update windows. When I click "Check for updates" it checks but it never does anything. So, after doing a little bit of troubleshooting online I tried doing sfc /scannow to see if there were any corrupted files, but then it couldn't even start because it says "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service." I searched up a little more to find people talking about the TrustedInstaller service, and after trying "net start TrustedInstaller" in cmd, it says the service is already started, but yet windows update nor sfc work properly.

I've also had issues installing the c++ 2005 redistributable where about halfway through the installation, the error code 1935 comes up (http://gyazo.com/f397e54deb22fbc7d2bf79f1713c23e2)
and it fails to install, which is a big problem as some of my games and programs will not start without it.

I've tried running SFCFix, a program from sysnative.com but it found no corrupted files and the log was basically empty.

And the last problem I'm having is that the nvidia driver crashes quite constantly, anywhere from 1-10 times a day. I'm not that worried about this as i suspect it's happening because it's still in beta and there's no way it's going to work flawlessly.

I've included the CBS.log file in the attachments as well.

Hi there I hope someone can herlp me. I have 12 updates showing as needing to be installed in my windows update to go onto my new lenovo G500 but everytime I try and install them I get the error message 80242006. I have googled it and tried the suggestions with no luck although I have yet to spot one that is for windows 8.1 which I have upgraded this laptop to.The missing updates are KB's 2987107 ,2968296, 2972103, 2979573, 2978041, 2979576, 2977292, 3000061, 3000869, 2989542, 2998174 and 3000988.Could the problem be because I have upgreded the laptop to windows 8.1 from 8? To reply to my own message I seem to have fixed it. I went to control panel, trouble shooting, system and security and ran the resolve problems that prevent you from updating windows, restarted and ran windows update manually and have now installed the updates that wouldn't install previously.

Dear Windows Seven Forums,

I try to resolve my own issues and normally do. However, this error message has gotten the better of me so far.

Have tried various solutions posted about this error message, from registry to firewall. None work so far.

I have enclosed the notepad containing the contents of the diagnostic tool report.

If anyone has a few moments to take a glance and give me there opinion I would be grateful.

Kind regards,

HH

Please downloadand save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

(you'll need tolook in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft DownloadCenter)

Run it - The toolcan take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install')depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear tofreeze for most of that time, but be patient.

The result islogged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip theCheckSUR.log and attach it to your reply

Hi,

My son's Toshilba Satellite L50-B-1DV hasn't successfully run a Windows Update since last October - I only discovered this yesterday.

When I had a closer look the updates, and just about every kind of troubleshooting I try, is failing with the error message "0x80070057". I've rooted around online but can't see any obvious fixes.

We'd prefer to fix this ourselves but as the machine is only six months our next step is to take it back to John Lewis for repair - which would be a pity as he uses his laptop every day.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Answer:Satellite L50-B-1DV Win8.1 - Windows Update Error Message 0x80070057

Hi

You have mentioned the error 0x80070057 while update installation.
This error occurs due to multiple reasons and therefore it?s not easy to say why this happens exactly. But the most common cause could be the missconfigured registry or damaged system reserved partition.

My recommendation for workaround:
Try to repair the system and the registry using CCLeaner. You could use this freeware software for registry cleaning as well as to remove the ?system garabage?.

If this does not help, try to repair the OS using the system?s own options.
The "Automatic Repair" option attempts automatically to diagnose and fix problems that may cause Windows 8 not to start or having a different wrong behavior.
Automatic Repair will start automatically when Windows is unable to start properly. If it detects any problems, it will automatically attempt to fix it but it can also be started manually.

Access to Automatic Repair can be found on the Windows 8 start screen. Now "Advanced" in the search box. When the search results appears click on the "Settings" category.

Now click on the option "Advanced startup options" and you will see the "General PC Settings screen". Look for the option "Advanced startup". Click on the restart now button and Windows 8 will restart your computer to access directly the Advanced startup menu.

Click on the "Troubleshoot" button and then the "Advanced options" butto... Read more

I have just taken delivery of a Satellite Pro A120 and updated the windows XP components on the Microsoft Update site, when the system rebooted to make the changes it developed an error message during the final stages of the bootup relating to the Realtek user.dll.

Basically it said that the user32.dll had been written to memory because the location it was stored in was reserved for windows components. The file in question being c:windows\system32\hhctrl.ocx, this caused some components of the sound system to not work.

It advises me to comtact realtek for a new dll? The latest drive on the Toshiba download site is older than the one installed. Any suggestion please.

Thanks

Answer:error message windows\system32\config\system does anyone know what to do to get it working again

Hi silvanavandijk,It would be very helpful if you post the whole error and not just the filename. Also it would be very useful to know what OS version/edition (for example: Windows Vista Prof x64) and thinkpad model you got.I have seen errors that appear right when Windows start to load with a black screen that says windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt or something like that. Is that what you experience? I have also only seen this problem with computers running Windows Vista, are you using Vista? If this is the problem you see the solution is to boot from a Windows DVD and choose the repair option instead of starting the windows installation. That should fix the problem. Another option would be if you got a image backup of the computer. Without the DVD i don't know how to fix this problem or if it's even possible. -gan

Hey guys,

I've been having an issue with right click copy and paste as well and drag and drop. I simply CANNOT move files around by any method whatsoever. Apparently shell extensions can cause this issue, but I downloaded a program that lists the shell extensions and allows you to disable them and the problem persists. I understand that a virus may also be at fault. I've done a thorough scan using avast, malwarebytes, and a number of online virus scans... and they did detect a few tracker cookies, and a couple of trojans which were sucessfully removed.... however the problem persists! I also tried the sfc/scannow function in comand promt, and the scan found and fixed SOME corrupt files, but was unable to fix ALL of them.
Also, there's a Tos...something.dll file that is associated with bluetooth that causes the same problem but I'm pretty certain my machine doesn't have this file as it doesnt have bluetooth.

I'm using a Dell Studion 1735 and Vista 32bit

Any ideas? I'm totally at a loss having tried various things. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey all,

I was given a friend's laptop to try and repair - running Win7 Home 64-bit. Trying to update it to the latest Windows Updates as it hasn't been done since Dec. 2015 successfully. Ever since the, it fails. Windows Updates fail because of the error code (forget it now, will update with it later) that states the Windows Update icon is hidden, but it;s not hidden and not even LISTED in the 'Customize System Tray Icons' menu...

Checkdisk asks to run on startup, but fails due to a certain update being installed, but doesn't list the update, and I can't run SFC /scannow as it mentions there is a system repair that requires a reboot every time.......but no number of reboots ever seems to fix it to let me run scannow?

Cheers for any help and thanks!

Great info at this site so I hope someone can help me out. First off: I am running Vista Home SP1 on a Toshiba Satellite A135 with 2GB Ram. About 6 months ago, the Windows Update of SP2 got stalled and did not finish. Since then Windows Update has not been (for the most part) updating. Additionally, Windows Explorer crashes at least 1 out of every 4 sessions. Another symptom is that the CPU usage unexpectedly spikes and the computer runs hot. I have ignored this as long as possible but tonite it made video playback on Netflix extremely choppy and that was the last straw.

Here is what I have googled and done over the last 6 hours to attempt to fix this (I know just barely enough about computers to be dangerous to myself). I suspected my machine needed an update:

1) Tried again to install Windows updates but failed. Got 80070017 error. Thought it might be a corrupted registry file. Stupidly, I ran a program called Error End that I found at wiki-errors.com. After the scan, I uninstalled Error End and went to CNET and found both Wise Registry Cleaner and Free Window Registry Repair. I had a ton of errors (1400 detected by Wise & 2000+ by FWRR) so I fixed them. Still no luck with Windows Update.

2) Found a post that made me suspect malware/virus which led me to a post on this forum. I then downloaded and ran rkill.exe with clean results. I updated Malwarebytes and ran full scan. Unfortunately, my ADD got the better of me and after 40 minutes running with 0 infections I st... Read more

When clicking on properties, it states that" this device will not start--code 10." Answer:Windows Update 8007370D - sfc /scannow doesnt work

We still need the SFC results in the CBS.log (or CBSPersist files) - it should help us work out why SFC failed - it wasn't in what was uploaded.

You had fairly massive corruption when you first ran CheckSUR back in March - it fixed everything apart from the current error at that time.

I'll post a fix protocol for the manifest problem soon.

Hello Asjunsmoker, and welcome to Seven Forums.

See if going through the items listed in the blue note box under step 4 in OPTION TWO of the tutorial below may be able to help with this. SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Considering you had a virus, you might consider doing a clean install of Windows instead to help make sure that your system is clean and start with a fresh install.

Hope this helps,

All the sudden today, I get Windows Explorer has stopped working dialog box, which then causes win 7 to go completely black. Tried a couple restore points but they either failed or didn't fix.
I also get this usually now when logging into windows.
Was able to get in and run a scannow.
See file. How do I fix these errors?

I have a Dell with the factory oem win 7 disk.
win 7 64bit.

Answer:Started getting Windows Explorer stopped working, here is scannow

Just personal opinon but I'd opt for a Repair Install as the quickest way to try to fix these issues.

Repair Install

As the second warning says:

"You cannot use a OEM Windows 7 "Factory" Restore/Recovery type of installation disc that came with or created from a store bought computer to do a repair install with. These can only be used do a clean install instead."

So make sure your factory oem win 7 disk is an actual installation disk and not a Recovery disk. If you need an actual install disk your can download the ISO from here and save it to your desktop. Then burn it to a DVD. You'd use the 25-digit Product Key that's on a sticker on your computer when it comes time to reactivate with Microsoft.
