internet slow, great connection in house on other comps, just reformated, always slow

Question: internet slow, great connection in house on other comps, just reformated, always slow

Hi, My internet is very slow. I have a asus k8v-se deluxe motherboard, and im starting to think that its the onboard ethernet port thats slow. Im directlly conected to a linksys wireless n router( the fastest one out) and all the other computers in my house go pritty fast. I just reformated my hard drive and wiped my computer completely so i shouldnt have the same problem...... but do. So if someone anyone has any suggestions as to what i should do, shoot! or if you can finda link to a fast ethernet internal card that would be great. I want to use all of my router, its 12x the speed of G. so i wanna put that to the test......... please help me. thanks -Nick

Preferred Solution: internet slow, great connection in house on other comps, just reformated, always slow

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When you say directly connected to your wireless router do you mean physically?

Hey guys, I have a WRT54G2 linksys router and all of a sudden on the 19th, it began to act really slow for my end when mine, my dad's and mom's computer were on. Usually before that during the summer and back, we could run all 3 and stream movies/videos with no latency issue or DL speed issue. Since the 19th, it had gotten my end to a slug speed with 200+ latency and less than 1mb DL speed. We're all running ethernet cables toward our comps. I have Cable internet(Optimum Online) which has a 15mb/s DL speed when I'm just speedtesting when my computer is the only one on during these past days. No viruses. When 1 gets shut down, the speed goes back up a bit to 2-3 mb/s and with only 10 latency. What the hell is the problem? Please help, guys!

Answer:Slow internet with a WRT54G2 linksys router connecting with 3 comps

What are you getting when running a speedtest at either Speakeasy.net/speedtest, or speedtest.net? Have you also tried rebooting the modem, router and all computers? Have you double checked with your provider or lord forbid, your parents to see if the ones who are paying the bills, may have lowered the speed to save money.

The later is a possibility, due to a lot of people are unable to afford higher speed plans these days, and want to be able to just retrieve their email, and check out news, that you can do with a below 6 mb plan (ie 1mb download).

So I wasn't quite sure where to put this so I'll try it here,
Recentl my gaming computer has become ridiculously slow with any internet related services, games constantly disconnecting, skype disconnecting, hell sometimes I can't even load websites when this happens and it is a constant problem at the moment and can barely load google.
I know its not my internet as my other devices have no problems laptop ect but I have noticed they start to lag a tiny bit (barely noticeable) but as soon as my gaming pc turns off everything goes back to normal. I have scanned everything with Norton 360 (which I have had since day one and never disabled) and even went to the hassle of getting malwarebytes just to double check it was safe. When i do speed test with my pc I'm getting 1mbs on other devices I am receiving 25+.
I have a Asus pce n15+ network adapter which could be a problem?
I've tried uninstalling and re installing drivers updating them ect. still no solution and now I'm lost.
Can anyone offer me any ideas of what to do thanks!?

Answer:One PC constantly slow connection other devices in house are fine

Background Story
Okay guys, so i found out were moving house a few weeks ago into a rural area. I looked about the internet and guess what, it was slow, im talking about not even 1mbit fast. Since my step-dad works from home and im a verrry heavy downloader, we needed to find a alternative solution.

So Far..
I looked into satalite internet, its expensive and still slow for the prices. To expensive infact.

So, now were looking at 3G internet, which apprently our new neighbours have and they get pretty decent speeds (t-mobile). I have seen this -

Code:
[URL]http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/mobile-broadband/mbb/[/URL]
The idea is that my step-dad and my mum have 1 to share, my brother and sister share one and i get one to myself. But, 3GB seems a little low for me, are there any other options do you think guys?

I suggested getting (as well as the mobile sticks) a cheap broadband which is landline based so i get just plonk my downloads on and let them download 24/7 until there done. But it would be still be slow.

So please guys, any help is greatly appriciated, this new house is awesome.. but the internet speeds are putting me off big time.

OTHER NOTES -
I found a awesome orange stick, but turns out the coverage would be pathetic in my area.

Willing to reward for help.

My internet is so painfully slow on my desktop computer. It works perfectly fine on all the other laptops/tablets in the house, (roughly 6-10mbps) whilst my desktop only gets 0.4mbps (sometimes less). It is so slow I cannot even load a webpage - it makes the desktop unusable. It has not always been this slow. I have ran a malware bytes scan and nothing came up. I did a factory reset, and it changed nothing. I have updated my wifi drivers.
My specs are:
CPU: AMD FM2 A8 6600K APU Quad Core CPU 3.9Ghz (turbo 4.2Ghz)
Motherboard: Gigabyte F2A68HM-HD2
Memory: 16GB DDR3 1600mhz Memory
Graphics Card:ATI 8570D APU Graphics
Hard Drives: 1TB Seagate Sata 7200RPM 6Gb/s Hard Drive
I have an ASUS USB N-10 150MBPS 11n Wireless USB Dongle.

Please tell me any information I need to include to fix this problem as it is driving me insane.

I bought a Dell XPS L502X laptop 2 months ago, and it has constantly had troubles connecting to the internet and getting a fast speed. For example, on speedtest.net my laptop gets around 5 Mbps while my sisters and dads laptops get around 20 Mbps (i have tested many times, still the same result). Another problem is that on the screen, it shows my ISP as AT&T, even though i have Bell (soon to switch to rogers). It shows my location in the U.S, even though i live in Ontario, Canada. None of this happens on other laptops in my house.

I think i may know the problem, but i need help in fixing it. I play a game called minecraft, and to play with your friends you need to run a server. When i was installing it i remember having to change a ton of stuff, making my IP "Static" and other things. I do not have a restore point which can return me to factory conditions, and the nearest one is only a few days away..... Can you guys help me go back to when i got this laptop and return to fast speeds? I am 100% sure its my laptops fault as my dad's and sister's laptops have extremely fast internet speeds.

The title says it all. My connectivity is fine but the internet, mainly streaming audio/video is really slow. Ive posted before but havent received any advice. Everything is perfect in safe mode. How might I diagnose the problem?

Mike

Answer:Slow Internet - Works Great in Safe Mode

Typically...if the problem doesn't occur in safe mode, but does in normal...I would conclude that something that loads in normal mode is interfering with the connection.

That could be add-ons you have installed in your browser...malware...or such. I would start with disabling all browser add-ons that are not essential.

Hi all,
I have 2 computers, a Dell laptop and a Dell Desktop, they are recently new, have been working fine, they both have Vista. Just as of late last night the internet connections have been poor, either not connecting at all or slow. I have AVG 8.0 but it has not found any viruses....any help would be appreciated. thanks,

Answer:Solved: Internet connection slow, downloading slow

Hi Dano.
Are both pc's hardwired or one wireless through your router?
Are both slow at the same time?
Have you tried eliminating the router and hardwiring one pc directly through the modem.(will require a power on reset of the modem)?

Do a speed check
www.speakeasy.net/speedcheck
Any recent hardware/software changes?
Any error msgs ?

Is this cable or DSL?
Knowing some of these things will assist the techs here to delve further into the problem.

Hi. How are you? I am coming here because I'm going to attempt one more time. And then I'm going to call it a lost cause.I have aDell Latitude computer running windows 7. I have Google Chrome as my default browser. It is the easiest to get around in for me, and has tools for all of these popups that are in exitance. I have a question that I doubt has any real good answers, or any answer that is going to help, but I will go ahead and waiste these next few minutes just to see what happens. I LOVE YouTube. But YouTube I think is at the end of its time with me. I now have moved to a place that has a slightly slower speed and It is using Windstream. I now have PROFOUND problems browsing youtube because it is PROFOUNDLY SLOW.

REALLL slow. I have a question. Does anybody know of something in existance that would make it faster? I've checked my computer for bugs. NONE to be found. Cleaned it up. I've got ReadyBoost Activated, and I'm using chrome. Any suggestions or tools that would allow me to browse Youtube, and do all of the functions/features involved in YouTube like the PlayList Abilities such as AutoPlay and Auto-Repeat? ANYTHING? Oh, I Defragmented it too. And deleted other programs that I wanted to delete. Still profoundly slow. Internet Explorer isn't happening. BAAAAAD IDEA. Tried it. We're talking about Taking the definition of Profoundly slow to new and dangerous levels. Thank you very much. Sorry for waisting your time, and God Bless.

Hello, i'll be grateful if you could help us with a problem that we are having with our laptops at home. Let me to explain you, my wife have his own laptop at home, as I have mine laptop too, both of the computers share a wi-fi internet conection. I'm not sure of what's going on but the internet conection it's extremely slowly, sometimes when we reboot our laptops there is no internet conection. According to our ISP there's no problem with the internet conection, they said it could be something with the laptops.

Now, It's true that the two laptops are more slowly, specially my wife's laptop, it takes too long for any processes, I always take a look to the running processes and it seems like there are too much process always but I'm not sure of what is good and whats isn't.

I decided to attach The HiJack log from my wife's laptop, maybe with this you could help us to figure out what's going on.

Thanks for your time!

Just recently started to notice the speed of my connection has greatly slowed down! I am on a desktop PC that is using a linksys wireless USB adapter to connect to my router. I looked at the speed and it was like 18mbps when it used to be like 54mbps. Now my laptop on the other hand if i have it right where i have the same desktop pc connects to the router and receives a speed of 54mbps. Whats going on here? why did my desktop pc suddenly get slower? Its prolly just a coincidence but right after I installed frostwire it seemed like thats when it got slower. (no frostwire isnt running and thats not why it seems like my connection is slower). But there isnt really a way that an application could cause my actual connection speed to slow down is there? The only thing that i can think of is that my linksys wireless usb adapter is going bad or something? does anyone have any ideas, or suggestions on what is going on here??

So, I picked up a used R50 1831.  Windows crashed on me in less than a month (blue screen).  IBM access failed too. So I picked up windows xp and installed it with a fresh reformat of the harddrive.  Updated the Bios and began to install all the drivers.  I even put in an extra gig of pc2700.  Something is obviously wrong with this machine.  The boot takes about 10+ mintues to complete (with or without the new memory).  Application launches can take anywhere between 2-3 minutes to complete.  At random times it seems to run normal, but most of the time it is very very very very slow.  Help!  thanks

Answer:Reformated an R50. Now it is insanely slow.

Hello, may be the hdd is faulty. Please check first with HDTune. After that you should download Lenovo Tool Box or PCDoctor from Lenovo support pagessee link on top of this page and do a full system test.

The distance is too great for a wireless network and probably wouldn't work terribly well by hardwiring it (and that's assuming you can get past the physical problems of installing the cable externally). You may be able to use a powerline network connection (not sure if these will work on an extended intranet) but the setup costs are still pretty high for now.

Really - fork out the few dollars that a internet connection of your own will cost. Much better proposition all round.

Hello,

Today I reformatted my computer about and hour and a half ago, and I'm already having my first problem. My Ethernet card on my PC is no longer working properly, so I can no longer create a connection to the Internet V.I.A. Network Places. Anyways, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling a piece of hardware from Device Manager known as Ethernet Controller. So far, it still will not work. If anyone can please provide any suggestions or answers to help me get this problem fixed, I would much appreciate it.

Thanks again,

Tyler

Answer:Reformated My Computer and the Internet Connection Won't Go back Online

I hate it when this happens- and sometimes it will be the same setup but a differn't fix so, I need to ask you something... In the device manager do you have a yellow "!" next to your device????? Or does it say in your task bar "a network cable is unplugged"

Concurrent wil all this, something is resetting my trackpad settings back to default on every reboot. Solved this last summer by removing something from Logitech, but the problem is back now. Weird.

Internet MUCH slower than usual, responses sluggish on- and offline. System fans kick on within 2-3 minutes of startup. I've run all the usuals - McAfee, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, disk cleanup, and chkdsk. Hard boot after all that, then ran HijackThis:

Ok, here's what I have. Two Win2k computers connected via CAT5e crossover cable. Both system are reasonable in power (P4 1.7, 512 MB RAM, etc), but when I access resources over the network on either system, it takes 10+ seconds for it to finish the access. I tested the throughput of the network by sending a 564MB file from one system to the other. According to the Performance monitor, it maxed out at about 4MB/s. Both NICs are 10/100BT running in 100MB Full Duplex mode (not "Auto"). Why is it so slow??

Hello, I have seen my problem mentioned all over the internet, but i have yet to see a solid answer from anybody yet ... if someone fixes their problem then they don't explain how they solved it ...

My problem is that browsing from one XP computer to the other is very slow ... I go into network neighbourhood and microsoft network, but then once i hit entire network there is a long delay ... after about 30 sec it allows viewing ... everything i click on requires 30sec on click to view the folders ...

My other computer is fast all the way through the entire network crap then once it tries to enter an actual share, i haven't waited long enough to even let it see files ...

My network consists of two XP computers connected over a four-port hub ... the computer with the 30 sec delay is connected to the internet and the other comp is bridged over to this connection (internet works fine)

If anyone could please give support that'd be awesome ...

Answer:2 XP Comps, slow folder browsing ...

For some odd reason, in the past 4 weeks, my streaming video has become VERY slow, and I do not know why. I have a high-speed cable connection, the same I have had for the past 6 months. It is slow, sound-with-stil-images and/or constantly rebuffering, and this is true with WIndows Media, Winamp, Realplayer and even Flash videos (on YouTube for example). I cannot take it anymore. I tried this Hijackthis thing, and this is my log:

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

I'm having problems regarding my wireless internet. First off, we've got two computers, one upstairs which uses a regular modem, and this one downstairs which gets its internet connection through a router upstairs.

Now, from my computer upstairs, the internet works flawlessly throughout of the day. This downstairs computer, its internet connection is...to put it mildly, crap, depending on the time of day. Speed always seems to go real slow at around the same time each day, around 2pm, around 4pm and again around 7pm. It seems to get back on track around 9-10pm, which is right now.

The funny thing is that it says connection is 'excellent' or 'very good'. Here's an example. It's the same scenario whether internet connection is actually very very slow or at normal speed.

I have no idea why, and I'd be really grateful if anyone can help me out. Tips or remedies on what I can do, because it's very frustrating!

Thank you.

Answer:Very slow internet connection though status shows connection is 'excellent'

How the computer downstairs connected to the internet? I guessing your modem is upstairs?

I don't get what's wrong with this computer. Almost everyday it acts slow, it takes about 2 minutes to login to a page. Some days it will act fast and other days it won't and it's annoying, especially when I have to use the internet to research! It's even acting worse than a 56k modem. I've done a spyware check with spyweeper and it finds adware sometimes and I delete them, but it doesn't seem to have an affect on the speed. Does anyone have a clue what the problem might be and how to fix it. Also I have a very old cable modem, I've had it since 2002 I believe. It's a Surfboard SB4100 Cable Modem.

Answer:Help! Slow Computer, Slow Internet. Slow, Slow, Slow!

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

Hey there! I've created this thread to find out why my internet is agonizingly slow. I was playing LoL when my ping jumped from 70 to a whopping 1k, and continued to go up and up until it reached 4k. This was a few hours ago and I am still very laggy. There's about a 6 to 8 second delay in my skype calls and it takes a while for any webpages to load. I've tried skyping on my phone and I still have that same horrifying lag. I haven't had such slow internet for years so I was wondering if there is a way to tell what is causing this? I hope I am not being DDOSed and I doubt that I am but would someone please be able to help me?

I'm using windows 7 and my wifi is wireless but it's only a few metres from my computer so I have no idea what's going on. I've talked to a few of my friends who use the same internet company as myself and they said that their internet is fine so is it my router? Also recently my internet has been cutting out every 40 minutes or so and it gets quite annoying (it'll come up with that red cross thing or the yellow star and after a few minutes it will eventually reconnect). I'm absolutely terrible when it comes to anything about computers or technology in general so any help would be wonderful! Please tell me if I am not being specific enough and I will try my best to explain in a way that you can understand, hopefully without sounding like an idiot. Aside from when my internet cuts out, it's saying I h... Read more

Answer:Slow internet connection

try doing a power cycle - see below
As its the same on another device connected to the router - its likely to be the router/modem or line
Ask the ISP to do a line test

------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to power cycle

?power cycle? process to reboot or reset the modem/router

Switch off all the devices modem, router and computers also unplug their power cables.
Wait at least 1 to 5 minutes. We have found in some instances you need to wait at least 15 minutes
Plug the power cords back in, but don?t switch them on.
First turn on the modem and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
Next switch on the router (if a separate device) and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
Now turn on your computer, You should now be able to access the Internet.

I recently .. relocated. I wanted to go with Comcast but after talking with a few friends, I found that sharing bandwidth with neighbors was not a good idea..

So I got DSL with Bellsouth. My internet speeds have been unusually slow. I should be recieving speeds.. up to.. 1.5 mbps. To make matters worse, my speeds were consistantly at the lowest acceptable speeds for my service..~780 kbps down, ~120 kbps up! Bellsouth tried and tried to help me, but were unsuccessful!

I have tried their optimization tool. No use. I am at a loss at how to fix this, getting cable, or sticking with DSL.

Oh yes, I do not have any viruses on my computer and the programs installed are minimal. I used the same computer, same settings at my old house with no connectivity issues. I was getting the full 1.5 at my old house.. ahh good days.

Hello,

I've noticed that if I use a P2P software for more than a few hours, the internet connection is very slow even after I stop using the P2P. The connection remains very very slow until I disconnect the router for a few seconds and restart it. Why is that?

Thanks

I am experiencing a slow internet connection using my new desktop
Internet speeds using BBC connection speed test being as follows:
Laptop (built in wi-if)- 8334 kbps - when both desktop and laptop on and using internet
Laptop (built in wi-fi)- 8374 kbps - when desktop off and only laptop connected to internet
Desktop - -448 kbps - when laptop on and using internet
Desktop - 438 kbps - when laptop off and only desktop using internet
As an example it took me two hours on my desktop to download 221MB and with other downloads it was still as slow
I am using a TEXET wireless 802.11b/g/n USB adapter with advertised connection speed of 150 mbps
and I use a BT wireless hub
I don't think it could be the hub as the desktop runs slow whether in competition with my laptop for internet connection or not
Also if it was the hub why would it always give such a fastest rate to the laptop when both are on.?
According to the Realtek 11n USB software which came with TEXET wireless adapter it shows signal strength 67% and link quality
99% - I would expect a faster connection if these are correct.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Have you had a look in device manager to see if any yellow exclamation marks.Or checked Taskmanager to see if anything using up most of the CPU.
If you are getting 8mb download speed on the laptop you should be getting about the same on the Desktop.

Hi,

I've been having problems with really slow internet connection over the past few day (it's been as low as 68kbps) and I've contacted virgin media about it and thus far they have been useless. I've tried everything they suggested: bought a new router, changed to a corded telephone and restarted my laptop but none of it has worked!! They now suggest that I get a new IP address. Does anyone know if this will help at all and if so how I change it?

Any advice/help would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

Howdy! for some reason, for four days straight I have been having internet problems! I am currently at wits end. Wether its malware, I do not know. But when I'm trying to download something, the KPS drops down to 1 and below. (THis "Something" is a game from a trusted source)

I mean, it really shouldnt ask for 2 hours for an 8 MB download! Expecally on a DSL connection.

ONly thing I really have to try to detect malware is Hijack This. I don't think I'd be logicly able to get anything better because if its asking for 2 hours for an 8 MB download, think what it'd ask for with a larger download!

Answer:Slow internet connection, 1 KPS!

What does DSLreports.com say as to what actual speed that you get?

For the past week or so my internet connection has been very sluggish. Most of the time pages just won't load. I don't know what could be causing this. When I go to Network Connections in Control Panel I notice the Sent packets (18,525) are much higher than the Received packets (17,456). Is this the problem? I've downloaded Zone alarm thinking it might be a virus or malware, but the speed of my connection remains the same. My ISP says they aren't having any problems in my area so I'm kinda lost. I don't know why mine has slowed down so much.

Since upgrading to SP1, I've noticed that my internet connection has become very slow - especially while running my BitTorrent application.
Pre-sp1, I was able to run as many torrents as I wanted with virtually no effect in browsing from page to page and site to site.
Since installing SP1 last night, I can't run a single torrent file without my connection (browsing or otherwise) slowing to a crawl with pages taking about 30 seconds to a minute to load, while games (Guild Wars) run me at a 500ms ping (I'm normally pinged at 120ms within that game or lower).
Modem has been reset of course and I'm running an 8mb/s line into my house with uploading bandwidth limited in the torrent application to 10kb/s of course as usual. Connection should be completely free and Windows Task Manager shows network utilization at .35%-.55%

Any ideas mates?

For the past two weeks or so, my internet connection on my pc has become extremely slow(from 200kb to 10). Not only has it gotten slower, i also cannot download anything without the connection stopping. The problem, i believe began a couple months ago with just youtube videos streaming slower and downloads stopping ever few minutes, but until these past two weeks its never been that much of a issue.

I know the problem is isn't my dsl because it works fine with other internet capable electronics so it must be a software/driver issue. The svchost uses up 100% of the CPU when something tries to update so it likely might be a windows based program acting up.

i dont know if it is in the modem or in our pc how do i know if it is in our pc or in the modem?

Answer:internet connection is too slow

gaga17 , slowness is one of the more common complaints heard and it can have a number of causes. I'll enumerate a few of the more common and we'll hope that hits you.Cable access? The number of folks trying to access the net at once can slow things down. Get up in the middle of the night and see if it's faster. If so, learn to love it (the slowness), it's them not you.Speed depends on memory and a lot of machines are right on the borderline when it comes to meeting required minimums so any added 'memory hog' has an adverse effect. Add memory?Sorta along those same lines is your startup menu. Lots of software writers think there's no possible way we could exist without their masterpiece so they put it in the startup menu. That usually only causes slow booting, but ... Take a look at what you have running in the background and be sure there aren't extras. An overzealous firewall reading each item over and over can significantly slow things. Kinda along those same lines are temporary files. Search for *.tmp,*.chk,~*.*, .chk (c/p so there?re no errors) You should only have 1 file containing your currently active files. Delete any others found (tip: select all and delete. It?ll tell you which is active and can?t be deleted.).A common ailment is a file called 'index.dat'. It gets read every time and can take quite a while if it?s too bloated. It's like a log file and keeps a record of every site you visit on the web. Empty, it's 32K, but it can grow HUGE. I completed the xp cleaning procedure and still have an unreliable internet connection. My cable provider says the connection is fine so I'm thinking it may be malware that is causing it. I couldn't save the AVG antispyware log, but here are the other two.
Thankyou for your time,

Answer:Slow internet connection

You have a few minor things to fix in your HJT log but nothing that would cause connections issues.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Does anyone know what might cause Internet Explorer to run slow for one user but not another on the same (W2K Pro) machine? By running slow I mean that the time it takes to load a web page (some pages 10 min., others are faster) or to download files. When we start to download a file it will start at a decent speed but then it will just gradually slow down to an unacceptable crawl. I have been trying different things for a week now with no luck. Would the different users use different versions of IE? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill.

Answer:Slow internet connection

Billvan,
Welcome to TSG!!

W2K users would not be using different versions of IE but they do have their own Temporary Internet files, folders, cookies, etc.

Have you tried clearing the affected users files? Use Tools, Internet Options, Clear History and Delete Files. I would do the cookies too.

A few days ago my interent connection became real slow i mean like 5m to load the google.com main page, did virus/malware/spyware check all came back clean, tried sys restore but it didnt work(as usaul) tried updating drivers and all still no go, the odd thing is that i play wow and ffxi which to my surprise runs just fine no lag or anything, what am i missing? ?? i cant think of another thing to do, i havent d/l or installed anything in the last few months so i dont think its a software problem and my other computer that runs on the same router is just fine which tells me its prolly not the router or modem, whatever you guys can think of i would appreciate it ty in adavance!

Answer:Slow internet connection

Well, you've eliminated quite a few possibilities:

1. Games don't lag> r/o heat and RAM
2. Other system on same router don't lag so not likely the ISP
3. No new installs- that you know of!
4. Specific to this computer- definite start date, not fixed by system restore.
5. You mention slow to load home page> have you added any processes to the Startup?

Take a look and see what's starting on boot:
Start> Run> type in msconfig> enter> Selective Startup> Startup Menu> UNCHECK everything EXCEPT the AV, third party firewall if you have one and touchpad for laptop if on laptop.
Apply> OK.

Reboot the computer. NOTE: you will get a nag message on first boot after making the changes. Ignore and close after checking 'don't show this message again.' Stay in Selective Startup.

While you're got the Startup menu up, see if there are any processes checked that you don't recognize. If there are, do a Google search to identify.

Let me know.

HI friends,

I am so frustrated! I live in a very small town where internet service choices are slim to none. One is Charter the other is Centurylink. Well I was with Charter and had all kinds of problems with them. Sorry if this hurts someoones feelings but it is true. So I switched over to Centurylink.Well I like the service of centurylink and wow my computer is more slow with their 1.5 then I had with Charter with just .1.0MBS.

So I contact Century link and so they have me run this test and I am not getting all of my 1.5 I am just getting 1.28. Hello! I at least had all of my 1.0MB.

Is this true, "Is cable Internet better then Ethernet"?

Or is there something I do not know about making the internet faster?

Thanks for any wisdom here.

What steps do I need to take to activate My Broadband to the line maximum

Answer:Internet connection too slow

I'm not sure how slow your connection is but 100Mbps (100 Meg) is much faster than you can expect from any home broadband connection, the highest currently available from BT Broadband being 8 Meg I believe. The 1394 adapter is a firewire connection for transferring data e.g. from a DV camcorder. Why do you think it's slow, have you performed a speedtest? What were the results?

As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. I have a perenial problem - a slow internet connection, seems to have got slower over time, I can work with fewer windows open than in the past. I'd be grateful for some tips on increasing the speed.

Specifically, my connection time is slow; I spend a few seconds (a good few seconds) with the words "Waiting to connect..." or "Waiting for site (address)" displaying in some window or the other on my screen every time I click a link.

I typically use Internet Explorer.

I have additional data: the download rate is OK: should be (advertised) 2.1Mbps, currently 1.5Mbps (www.Speedtest.net, www.BroadbandSpeedChecker.co.uk, and ftp data download of ~400MBytes agree), upload is about 400kbps (Speedtest, BroadbandSpeedChecker), and ping about 103ms (Speedtest), from a server it selected [which seems VERY long given that I have read ping times of 50ms and even 33ms described as 'slow'].

I'm running a single PC wired directly (well, via a filter) to the telephone network (broadband, ADSL etc.). Thomson/Alcatel Speedtouch 330 USB Modem.

I realise my 80GB HD is pretty full (of 70GB that forms the main partition, only about 9GB is free).

AVG does not detect any malware, neither does windows Defender (which at last seems to work [I have had problems with updating that which lead to an extensive discussion with microsoft and of the outcome was "the only fix is to reformat your HD"])

Can anyone offer a diagnosis and cure... Read more

Answer:Internet Connection Slow

Free up more hard drive space. Though this would not have an effect on browsing speed, it does have an effect on general windows performance.

Change the DNS so you are not using what the ISP supplies. This might be slowing you down.
Open DNS 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

http://www.opendns.com/home/fastreliable
you do not need to signup to use the DNS numbers.

Look to see what is currently shown and write then down then replace the two numbers with the above.

I have a cable modem and router and I can change mine through my router. Since you use a dsl modem/router combo, I suspect you might have to go into the dsl modem settings and change them from there.

Answer:Internet connection still slow

Hello,

What kind of connection do you have? dial up, cable, dsl???? That might mean something. Also have you tried everything listed in this post?

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

If not you might want to completely run through again encase you missed something if you really think you are infected.

take care

I've been having a slow internet connection (using Safari AND Firefox) for a few months and I've reseached online and tried all the suggestions but nothing has changed. I upgraded my service (cable modem), bought a new modem/router, ran virus check, changed my MTU, even signed up for OpenDNS. Nothing seems to be helping...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

This is my first post here and I hope it follows the correct posting procedures but if not please let me know and I will comply. I am experiencing periodically slow internet connections almost as if spyware or hackers are connecting to my computer slowing the connection down.
I am using Windows XP SP2
Linksys 3000 Router (replaced old router but hasn't done much help)
Intel core2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 3GB ram
Ran spybot, malwarebyte, search and destroy, and superantispyware and all found no spyware or viruses.
Have filesharing on this desktop computer so that our TV in other room using boxee box (entertainment hardware) can connect to this computer for movies, etc. Also using iphone4 internet, wireless on a computer on that TV (although the computer is never on anymore so irrelevant) and a laptop wireless connection. Finding I have to reset router or computer to temporarily increase speed. Sometimes speed is fast other times it is not. I have put the router channel on automatic and tried manual channels (to see if increased usage in condo building at times affects it, which perhaps it does?). Security password for router is about 8-12 letters long and are words so maybe need more secure password?

This has got me tearing my hair out...and I hope someone here can give me some guidance on sorting this out.

Been running Vista x64 for a while with no problems at all ( yes...honestly!!! ) with a Quad Core and 4Gb ram and an internet connection that was as good as I was expecting. A few months back, though, things went downhill very suddenly!

Now, it takes 20 minutes plus just to open some websites, and download speeds have dropped to virtually nothing. I am talking dialup speeds on a 2Mb line.

Model is a Belkin wireless router, but I am connected to it by cable since the PC is right by the phone line. I have 2 other PC's in the house ( both running XP wirelessly ) One is temporarily offline due to other issues... but the other is connecting normally with no speed problems.

I have done the 'google' thing, and disabled the auto-tuning facility, with no noticable improvements.

Contacting my ISP was a waste of time. So much so, in fact, that I am going to change ISP at the end of the month.

I was told:

1) Try another computer....yeah...thanks
2) Buy a new modem ... bit early to jump to that conclusion
3) There was nothing wrong...and no I don't have a supervisor you can talk to...
4) Just restart your modem and call us back.
5) Someone else is using your network connection

That was the best they could manage. I am no expert when it comes to networking, but I can figure out a few things:

a) Virus check has been done, with latest virus definitions. Adware ... Read more

Answer:Internet connection on a go-slow!

Is this possibly a modem problem?

I unplugged the modem/router last night, and left it off untilk this afternoon when I plugged it back in. Now I am getting a half-decent access speed. Can a model slow down when it is beginning to fail?

Recently when I connect to internet through mu desktop, the connection is so slow that sites that took split second to open now take ages.

In addition the access to the the setup pages for my NAS and ADSL modem through the web browser is equally slow.

Also printing a test page on my network printer took about 15-20 seconds. The test page normally prints within 2-3 seconds.

Transferring files from my NAS to the desktop is slow as well. Surprisingly transferring files to the NAS seems to be normal.

Turning off Zone Alarm didn't help.

Checked the status of my Ethernet adapter and according to windows it appears to be fine.

My OS is Windows XP with SP2 installed.

All of the above problems don't exist when I use my laptop. Do you think a virus might be the reason?

Answer:internet connection very slow

If this is your phone company then maybe call the number they have to check your phone line can help.
I had Pacbell dail-up years ago and had lots of trouble and call them was not helping at all because they keep saying all was ok. Was getting speeds at 600byte on a 56K.
Well I had Pacbell for the phones too and remembered that if you have phone troubles you could call it and they run test and tell you if there was trouble. So I called the number 611 or I think that is it and it said I had trouble so I had them come out.
Well there was a short in the line and the guy fixed it and that fixed my dial-up troubles.
What gets me both are the same company so the internet tech I talk to could of run the same test on my line I had done when I called about the phone.

I have Verizon FiOS and I have the 5 mbps/2 mbps package. For some reason, my internet has been going really slow today:

It also rapidly changes every time I do a speed test.

If anyone could tell me what's wrong, that would be great.

TCP YOUR-47375C5FC1:1026 YOUR-47375C5FC1:0

I called my Internet provider because my connection is way too slow. They ran a netstat application in my command prompt. It reflected that this code TCP YOUR-47375C5FC1:1026 YOUR-47375C5FC1:0 was "listening" to my computer and causing my connection to be slowed down. I tried a registry cleaner, and that didn't work. The tech from the Internet provider mentioned that something, maybe in my start-up program, is running in the background and not shutting off.
Does anyone know how to fix this? If so, can you give me an idiot's guide? I'm clearly not as savvy as you folks are. I need to be walked through.
Thanks a million.

Hello - I have a 4-year old laptop (Toshiba), Windows XP, not much software in it. I use mainly for cruising the web and e-mail.

From the time I push the on-button to my Comcast homepage takes a few minutes. Very very slow.

I've contacted Comcast (they're great BTW), and they told me I already have the highest broadband possible for my internet, so obviously, the problem must be on my end.

ALSO, 2 years ago, I was accessing e-mail FROM WORK through my home computer (and I was warned NOT to do it cuz it would mess up my computer at home). Surely, after that, I noticed my computer to be slow, sluggish and got a few error messages.

It's better now. I have virus sweep, defragment and have done disk clean-up, but none of these seem to help SPEED up my internet.

I am not networked to anything but BY VIRTUE of accessing work e-mail, I think I somehow got connected to their network.

I do not know how to fix that.

Any suggestions? Thank you in advance. I am a computer moron so please be patient.

Hi

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

I have a new Microsoft Wired Router, new D Link Switch, and new Cat 5 cables. I have 6 computer connected to them. Some of the time when I try to connect to the internet it runs like a 14.4 modem. I have a 1.5Mbs cable connection. I know that cable speed depends on how many people are the same node and are online and that sharing slow down the connection, what I don't understand is why its still that slow when I am the only one on the network using the internet.

I have windows 2000 pro installed. Do you think this is a software confiuration problem or maybe a network problem?

Answer:Slow internet connection though LAN

Too many variables. If you're the only one actually using the Internet, my guess is you're having cable or ISP problems, not network issues. If you can connect to other machines at normal bandwidth, it's unlikely to be your problem.
