I did an upgrade from Win 7 , and Screen Saver / Turn off display after 5 mins was working under Win 7 64 bit
As my title suggest Screen Saver / Lock screen Slideshow / Turn off display after 5 mins are not working under Win 10
The Lock screen Slideshow is there when Win 10 starts but only shows ONE image, never moves to another.
THINGS I've done so far to get any of these working ...Screen Saver / Lock screen Slideshow / Turn off display after 5 mins
I’ve turned off all the Wake on lan functions
Tried different folder/ images for the lockscreen Slideshow ,window spotlight and picture
Tried to set new power options , was able to get SLEEP to show up in "Start" as it was not there before, but once click , the display DID turn off, but wouldn’t turn back on with mouse movement keyboard presses, had to do a hard reboot. Win 10 started without issue and the SLEEP mode was no longer aviable via the power "start" menu.
Anyone have a clue how to get all of these working. Really would like my display to turn off after 5 mins , and the Screen saver to work , the Lockscreen I'm not fussed about
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Is it possible to turn the displays off after 10 minutes of inactivity, but for the display to lock only after 30 minutes of inactivity? The numbers are examples, but probably close to what I'd set.
I'm keen to save power, but having a short inactivity period, but I don't want to be entering my password all the time.
You can use the power saver options to turn the screen off after a certain amount of time.
Even if the monitor is turned off due to inactivity, you can also set a screen saver to blank screen after the same about of time that you used in the power options to turn off the monitor. Put a check by the "On resume, display logon screen". Then add a delay between the time that the screen saver comes on and the time that the computer locks:
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"ScreenSaverGracePeriod"="1111"
You can change the 1111 to any number between 0 seconds and 2,147,483 seconds.
If you would rather not use the screen saver method...
...you could use a scheduled task that triggers after an idle period:
Code:
rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation
Lenovo Y720 So, when I hit caps ock or num lock an on screen display tells me whether capslock or num ock has been pushed. While I appreciate it is helpful for some, in my case it become a hinderance. You need to remove "num lock" for single key print screen request, and if I have a short time frame, I am stuck without being able to screenshot until the num lock indicator goes away. How do I turn off the on screen display. Now, before you send me to the previously asked questions of similar nature, I have tried. There is no "display settings" in Control Panel. There is no "advanced display settings" on the settings panel. And there is no way to control it through NVIDIA or Intel graphics settings (that I can see). Thanks kindly.
More repliesAll of my "Idle" settings take effect despite not being idle. I have set my power managment settings to turn off my screen after being idle for 20 minutes. Rather than turning the screen off after being idle for 20 minutes, the screen turns off every 20 minutes regardless of whether or not I've been idle. The screen immediately comes back on as it typically turns off in the middle of my typing an email or a forum post. I have tried this on various time settings, as low as a minute and as high as 20 minutes. It seems that my system activity is not recognized (i.e. my typing and mouse usage) unless the system is specifically looking for activity, such as when the power management system has taken affect and the screen saver has come on, or the display shuts down, etc. This isn't a huge deal except that, when my settings included going to my lock screen I had to put my credentials in every time that the system shut off the display. I've read the solutions that suggest setting all of my power managmeent options to "never". This is simply not an acceptable solution. If I am using my computer in a public place and I get up to get a cup of coffee, I want my computer to lock itself after 5 minutes of inactivity. Additionally, if I'm in the middle of taking notes at a lecture, I want my display to shut down and conserve power after I have been idle for a time. Simply telling the machine to never use its security and power saving functions does not fix the problem, it si... Read more

I'm sure this is possible. Right now in my Screen Saver settings I have unchecked the "on resume, display logon screen" checkbox. In my power settings, I have set the laptop to turn off the display after being idle for 10 minutes. However, everytime the display turns off for some reason it still locks the screen. What gives!?
(system: Vista Business x86)
There have been issues with this, and I can't remember what the solution was, but there's an extremely simple workaround (if you don't use a screen saver): set the wait time to a very high number (like 9999 minutes). It will never lock again.
3 more repliesThis keeps happening after the update a couple of weeks ago. I set it to 30 mins, it resets itself to 10 mins. No viruses, no malware on my system.
Any suggestions much appreciated.
If you suspect an update I don't see any alternative but to look through them and see if any seem remotely related to the issue. If none of the updates bean on the screen saver then process of elimination may be the only solution.
The "easy way" may be if you have a Restore Point from just before the updates.
Ever since I did the latest windows updates this happens. I set it to 30 mins, at some point it resets itself to 10 mins. Suggestions appreciated.

Hi, first post here by a rather happy Lenovo Yoga 13 + Windows 8 user.
As the topic says, is it possible to have the lockscreen turn on automatically after a few minutes?
As it is now I can only get to the lock screen after waking up the computer from the screen saver. I would like to have it configured so that the traditional screen saver is bypassed and it goes straight to the lock screen and stays there forever until I swipe it up.
I think the lockscreen is a very beautiful feature and it's great to see all these small notifications. It would be wonderful to just be able to glance at my computer and seeing these notifications without actually having to touch it.
I feel it's kind of useless to only see the lock screen while you're actually logging in, because then you'll see your notifications anyway on your start screen.
The easiest way is to right click your account icon on top right of Start Screen and Lock it.
Don't know of a way to auto lock.

You can do it through the local computer policy or an easier way is to use windows steady state

I'm using Windows XP and lately whenever the screen saver is enabled, it locks up the screen. I can enter the password to unlock the screen saver, but then I cannot do anything with the screen. I have to log the user out or reboot the machine.
I have run SpyBot and found nothing. As far as I know, nothing was changed in the registry.
Firstly is it just the standard Windows XP screensavers you are using, or something else you have downloaded and/or installed?

I have a very strange problem, I'm stumped and would appreciate any help.
On my new HP6910 laptop, when my XP Pro SP3 (system default XP) Screen Saver comes on, the screen has a partial heavily corrupted copy of the bottom taskbar at the top of the screen (!) and when I ctrl-alt-delete and enter my password the taskbar at the bottom is missing all of its text but otherwise looks reasonable. The Oulook, Word, and other started tasks in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen have their icons, just no text, even if there is a group of them and you hover the mouse over the group and they expand. Most of them still work, but Windows Desktop Search (WDS) doesn't work and I have to close them and restart them. This seemed to start a few days after I installed WDS, added a DVI monitor to the docking station and the same day I installed Activesync 4.5. I've reinstalled WDS and removed my wallpaper but this didn't help, I'm about to reinstall Activesync but it takes a few hours to sync for the first time so I thought I would see if anybody had any other ideas before doing this.
All help is greatly appreciated!

I can enable auto turn off screen after period of time in control panel. But i found in lock screen, the monitor won't turn off automatically even if the time period is expired. Is there any way to solve this?
If you haven't, try setting the screen saver (can use blank) and set it to the same time as the monitor time out.

9 more repliesHi all here is another fix that I am posting here that will help a lot of people. Now if the PC is set up in a workgroup (home PC) the screen saver will work this write up is only for once the PC is joined into a domain and if the screen saver dose not work but has too for security reasons (ie like when you walk away from your desktop)Problem was on a Fresh install of W7 Pro (in a domain only) after W7 is all set up and all functions / options work (ie screen saver etc) Now when the PC was set up (in a workgroup) the screen saver would work normally and take the password and function normally but once joined into a domain the screen saver would never kick in and lock the PC as it should. Changing power options had NC, recreate profile NC etc etc. Here was the FIX and it worked 2X. If the PC's have ANY USB wireless devices like mice or keyboards etc. You must get the drivers from the manufacture (including Microsoft ones) even knowing when you plug in a wireless mouse and W7 installs it and it functions but the PC will not lock (so it is at the crtl+alt+del screen) get the wireless device drivers install them and all is good.
More repliesHello all- I updated the BIOS to 2.26 a while ago and ever since then there's no on-screen indication of caps lock on/off, screen brightness or volume when I change it. Now that the Microsoft Battery Saver app has been updated in Denim to include a % view on the start screen, how can this percentage be added to the lock screen on my Lumia 830?
You can't...
Just swype down on your lockscreen and you will see the battery percentage under the battery icon... I know it is not the same but the info is still accessible from the lockscreen.

WPM15 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! It may not be the screensaver that is the problem. Go into Control Panel --> Power Options and check the various options there. There is one about when the screen is blanked. That might be the problem. Set it to "never" to prevent it from blanking.Good Luck

Screen Saver Password Protection -Enable or Disable
I was wondering if anyone knew what settings I could change to lock the computer after it goes to sleep/screen saver kicks in (like XP Pro does). I just realized that after the screen saver and/or sleep kicks in, when I reactivate the computer, it doesn't revert to the windows logon screen (yes, the on resume, display logon screen is checked in the screen saver), it goes straight back into the account it was in.
I tried changing all kinds of security settings but to no avail. Anyone know a way around, or if this is a common issue?
Thanks.
PS - I set my logon screen to not show user names, so you need both the user name and password to access any account (and no-one can tell how many accounts are on the system), not sure if that "setting" is an issue to automatically go to the log-on screen after sleeping/screen saver. Help...thanks.
Hi, QuantumJump, and welcome to the forums.

i want to make a shortcut on my desktop to activate the screen saver and also locks the computer at the same time?????????
For the screensaver, find the .scr file in C:\Windows\System32\ then create a shortcut to it with the -s flag. For example:
Target: C:\Windows\system32\[screensaver].scr -s
For locking the workstation, use:
C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation
Not sure you can do both in one, but I think you can set the screensaver to ask for a password afterwards, which has the same result.
Hi I have a standard Lenovo W500 4062-2XG (3 months old). I am running an external 22" screen with extended desktop and a Microsoft wireless keyboard & mouse. I am presented with the standard "This computer is in use and has been locked" Lenovo dialog window, with the option to swipe a finger, or press ctrl+alt+del and enter a password.2. Walk away from the workstation until the screen saver is scheduled to automatically start up. The screen saver has password protection enabled.3. At this point, the locked Lenovo dialog window (from point 1) disappears, but the screensaver does not initialise. All that remains is the background wallpapers on both screens and some slight activity from the hdd light on the laptop. I am unable to do anything further. ctrl+alt+del has no effect and neither do any other buttons. The keyboard is still responsive (indicated by the numlock light) and I can still see the mouse pointer and move it around, but I cannot do anything else. I am forced to physically shut down the ... 3 more repliesHello.
I just installed Vista Ultimate 32-bit on a computer used by a few guests in my house.
In Windows XP, when the screen saver would activate from idle and someone would move the mouse it would show the list of users.
In Windows Vista, after I move the mouse it goes back to the last logged in user's desktop.
In screen saver, I clicked the "go to logon after resume" check for every user's screen saver but it doesn't work.
How can I fix this?
Hi
Is there a way to have an icon on the desk top that will start the screen saver.
Sometimes I would like to turn on the screen saver when i leave the computer and not have it wait the 5 minutes I have set.
I don't want to have to change the time delay each time.
I'm using Windows 7- 64 bit

It's better to blank the screen or put the PC to sleep, but the answer to your question is 'yes.'
Put a shortcut to the screen saver on your desktop. Easiest way is to just right click and hold on the file and drag it to the desktop. When you release the pop-up menu includes 'Create shortcuts here.'
For example, if you want the "Mystify" screen saver the file is C:\Windows\System32\Mystify.scr.

How are you creating your image for WDS???
Long story short, set up the Screen Saver in Audit mode, and make sure CopyProfile=True on the unattend.xml file, and you'd be sweet. (I know, I've just done it)

Does a screen saver continue running even after the monitor is turned off via power management?
If a tree falls in the woods, and nobody is around, does it make a sound?
I don't believe the process is terminated, so technically, it should still be running. I've never run anything to verify that though.
Hi -
Help. Ever since I had a crash a few months ago my monitor wouldn't shut off. I set it over and over to do so with the power settings, but no good. I didn't know about you guys and I just shut the whole computer off every night. Here's a weird thing. I could swear that I used to have the options of hibernate and stand by with this machine . It's a Sony Vaio with all the hardware on it. It's just mine - no network. I don't think I'm confused back to more than 5 years ago. I just let it all go. I think I read that the best thing was to shut it all off and that's what I've been doing for a long time, even before the crash. I went to Microsoft and looked where I was told and no hibernate or standby. I put it in search and got a whole lot of files that ended in .inf
Well, since yesterday my screen saver won't start up at the set 20 minute time. At least I didn't have to turn off the monitor all the time because the screen saver would go on during the day.
Today I posted some other problems that are popping up lately in the XP forum. I hope this isn't the end. The screensaver is another new problem. Any help is always appreciated. OH, this is good, it won't let me post as it says I just posted 10 secs ago. I posted something this morning. GREAT. It's the end.

Did you ever find out what caused your computer to crash? Are you able to run an anti virus scan?
Just recently, within the last couple days, my screen saver has decided not to work. It has always worked without any problem before, and im not sure why it decided to stop.
I've checked everything that i know with my knowledge, but it seems fine.
A couple possibilities are that when i did a google search on this problem, i found a post saying something about editing the screen saver file in C:\WINDOWS, but i notice that i dont have that file.
I dont know if the file was always never there, or maybe it was deleted somehow.
Another possibility is that there is a program running in the background, but i dont think that is the case because its the same programs running when it worked before.
Thanks in Advance
Well it might be a dumb suggestion, but if you don't have the "screensaver file" (whatever THAT is) where it's supposed to be, maybe that's why it's not working.
So then MAKE one, maybe.
Post a link to the site that talks about the screensaver file and maybe we can make you one to fix it. Or something.
Have you gone to the XP setting from Desktop>Properties ? It has a timer on it so it starts after a certain amount of inactivity. Did this change ?
Can you do the "Preview" ?
Hi guys. I have been trying to get my monitors to shut off so I don't get a burn in on my screens. I can't seem to figure out what is causing them to stay on. I tried enabling a screen saver which won't turn on and I also tried making a keyboard shortcut to turn off the monitor with a cmd command. Whenever I use the shortcut the monitors go down for a second and then pop right back on. I read somewhere it could be my mouse or keyboard causing it to stay awake, but I don;t think this is the problem seeing as it was fine on windows 7. Can anybody help me out?
Thanks!
Since going to Win 10 I have the same problem and have traced it back to my game controllers which are plugged into a USB hub. When I unplug the hub from the computer the screen saver and screen off works fine. Good luck.

More repliesI have my power settings set so the screen saver comes on after 10 minutes, and the display turns off after 15 minutes. Everything starts off hunky dory. Though whenever I add a monitor or change resolutions there's a 50/50 chance I'll get a "windows explorer has stopped responding, windows explorer is restarting" error. Once that restarts my screensaver/power options won't start again until I reboot the computer.
Previewing the screen saver works, but it won't start up by itself.
Changing or resetting the power plans has no effect.
The screensaver and some of the power functions are handled by the video drivers. Update those if possible.
If those video drivers are already up to date, then let's start looking for a reason for explorer restarting. Use Process Explorer to see you we can find an app that is exiting and taking explorer down with it. You can change one setting to make it easier to see such an app:
File > Options > Difference Highlight Duration
...set that to 9 seconds.
If Process Explorer does not help, then take as many things out of the equation as you can via this process: Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup
If a clean boot does not stop explorer from restarting when you change screen resolutions then spend some time with these steps: Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

Hi
You can still use the old ssmypics.scr (My Pictures Slideshow) screen saver in Windows 8.
If you have access to an XP system, you can copy the ssmypics.scr screen saver file from the Windows\System32 folder and move the file to your Windows 8 system. Place it in the same folder (If you are using the 64bit version of Windows 8, place
the file in the Windows\SysWOW64 folder).
If you do not have access to the file, you can download a copy from the following link.
ssmypics.scr
Download the file to your Desktop.
Right Click the file and select Properties.
Click the Unblock button.
If you wish, run a scan on the file with your antivirus software.
Move the file to the proper folder.
You can now go to Personalize/Screen Saver. The screen saver will show up as
My Pictures Slideshow. Select the Settings button in the screen saver to see the options.
Regards
"Move the file to the proper folder." What and where is the proper folder?
More repliesI have a screen saver that I've used for years in both Win98 and XP. It's now running on my root drive (C) just fine. I had problems with my present copy of Win XP Home so I bought a new copy of XP Home with all the service packs in it. I installed it on another drive so that I could install all my programs before transfering it to my root drive.
When I installed my favorite screen saver there was no problem. However the 'Display Properties' window where the scren savers are selected does not show this new saver as a selection. The .scr file was installed in the 'Windows' folder on the drive just like it is on the copy of XP where it works fine. Since several people say the saver apps are found in the 'System32' folder I copied the .scr file to 'System32' but that didn't help.
Does anyone have any idea why the 'Display Properties' doesn't see the .scr file and put it in the list of savers?
I can open the saver by clicking on the scr file but then there are no settings or timing functions and when I move my cursur and the saver goes off the 'Display Properties' shows the selection for a saver is set to 'none'.
Strange how it works fine in one copy of the OS but not in this new copy.
You should be able to set up the screensaver by right clicking on it and clicking install. If that doesn't work try putting it in WINNT in the C drive.
I would like to listen to MP3 files, radio, podcasts; directly from the web, more than five minutes. Thank You in advance for Your help.

i have also gone into windows registry as suggested by a friend and tried changing the time there from the standard 300 secs to 900 and still this problem persist.

impatiently waiting for advice
Although I'm not familar with your particular machine, it would seem that you have done what I would do in your situation. Only other suggestions that I can provide would be to do away with your screensaver period, and check to see that there isn't a BIOS setting kicking in power management.
I am running windows Xp but when I set the screen saver to come on it doesn't work can anyone please tell me what could be wrong,
10 more repliesI am running Windows XP Home and my screen saver stopped working. It works when I preview it, but doesn't work when I am idle. I have the time set to 1 minute just to see if it goes off and it doesn't. Any ideas.
Hi mirror,
Is it the one screen saver only? Do any others work?

I have upgrated my pc form xp to vista windows. My problem is my the screen saver does not work. I had same problem when I got XP windows as well .The solution was by disable a file,I think it was (EHK) or something close to this....I dont remember how did I do that>>>would somebody reminde me how to do it ,please?
THANKS
My screen saver won't run when I leave my PC. The only thing new to my system is I plugged in a Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse (Microsoft Wireless Mulitmedia Keyboard 1.1) and installed the software to program the keyboard. If I go to properties and test the screen saver it works just fine. In reading, I tried the Dial-A-Fix and that didn't fix the problem.
Running: Dell P4, 2.8GHz, 512MB, XP Home SP2.
Click on Start > Run > type msconfig > click on the Startup tab and see if you have one of the items listed below. If so, disable it. Restart and try the screensaver.
1. Ehtray.exe.
2. DVDLauncher.exe
3. Power DVD
4. PCM service.
5. Dell Media software
Steve
Running Windows XP and screen saver does not turn on. It appears, from reading, that if I go into regedit and remove ehtray from startup this might take care of it. Question #1 is if I do this and it does not help can I turn it back on? Question #2 any thing else I should try?
I can not get Windows XP Screen Saver to work in my Dell Laptop - Inspirion 1710. If I hit the preview key it will go into screensaver mode, but it does not do it automatically. What can I do to reset / fix this?
Thnks
Rob
Since your laptop is Dell, I presume that you use Dell Media Software.
Other people had the same problem too. Try disabling this program to check if your screensaver is working.
Other programs that might conflict with the screensaver might be:
1. Ehtray.exe.
2. DVDLauncher.exe
3. Power DVD
4. PCM service.
I started having weird problems and did a system restore.
The only problem I seem to have now is the screen saver
won't come on when it is supposed to. Help please.
You may have a task running in background keeping the PC busy. Run MSCONFIG, select the Startup tab and uncheck non Micorsoft items. You can use trial and error to find which one you need.
I just recently reloaded Windows 7 64 bit. The screen saver was working. After downloading all the updates it won't work. Is there someway to get it working again?
I found out that it was the wireless mouse. I tried a different mouse ,with a mini receiver and all is fine now.
My Screen saver has worked as long as I have had this computer. (Dell Inspiron 1545. @ 8 years old)
The screen saver will come on when I click preview in the Personalize, Screen Saver, settings.
I get a black screen with a statement that There are no pictures in that file.
It works with other selections but not with photos. I can select different photo folders but it won't work.
When I select OK or Apply on the settings window, the program hangs up. I have to open the task manager to close it out.
I can come back through the personalization - Screen saver windows and the photos will preview but will not open when the screen saver runs.
I recently did a fresh instaill of my OS
And i want to use the "Ribbions" screen saver that windows came with, however it does not work.
My screen will show it for 2 seconds and then it will go black
On my old instaill it worked fine
Did you have Win 7 beforehand?
Check your graphics card for latest video driver.
Does this only happen with Ribbons. Do other screensavers work properly?
I realize this is a small issue but my screen saver or "sleep" mode will not come on. Although I don't know if it's related, but I recently installed a Microsoft Laser 6000 mouse - ever since then the sreen saver won't come on AND it won't gone into dark screen/sleep mode. I have to turn off the monitor when not in use.
If it's only been since installing that mouse, it's safe to assume the drivers for it are the culprit. Try reinstalling your graphics drivers.
hey i have a problem with my screen saver , when i put it on for like say 5 minutes it will not turn on ...it will just stay right on desktop ... i can preview it ..but it will not work ..i made sure everything was set and applied ...any feed back pleaseeeee

Thanks again fellas, really appreciate the help we deadheads get from this site.
ok, if anybody is still out there reading this after all these years, please help me.
I have the same problem --- screen saver does not work --- and I have a wireless mouse in the system. When I first plugged in the USB receiver for the wireless mouse, Windows automatically installed the driver(s).
Should I uninstall the driver(s) and, if so, how do I do that?
Or, do you think the cause of my issue is different?
Or, do you think I should just set a mouse trap?
Thanks!
The problem is, the screensaver does not really save the screen. Only turning the screen completely off will preserve the life of the display. The screensaver is just a diversion --- a fun thing to watch for a few minutes until the screen turns off.
My preferred setting is: 3 minutes of inactivity --> screen saver and 7 more minutes of inactivity --> display off.
Right now, my screensaver does not work, so the net effect is 10 minutes of inactivity --> display off.
One would think that after all these years somebody would have definitively solved the problem, but apparently not.
If anyone does have a solution, Please post if on this thread.
Thanks!
I've been having this error message come up while I try to use the Screen Saver tab in my Display properties. When ever I click on it I recieve this message:
Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience
Its very strange and while my screen saver does work it doesn't allow me to change it from what it was before because I can no longer access the settings page for it. There is also an error log created in applications log after this error occurs and it looks like this:

4 more repliesWhen I put my computer on standby/hibernate I can no longer get it back up and running. The computer turns on but the screen remains black. I have to just shut the computer off and restart to get it going. Also my screen saver doesn't turn on anymore. When I go to the screen saver window it showed [none] as the screen saver. I just tried changing it yesterday to one of the screen saver options but it went back to [none] again. I don't know whether this has to do with my computer being cleaned out of malware weeks ago with help by a technician on this site. Any help you could give on why this could possibly happen would be appreciated.

17 more repliesMy system Froze up and went to a black screen; upon reboot it wouldn't get past the BIOS load screen. I reset the CMOS and now everything works fine except an issue with the photo screen saver. The other screen savers work, but the photo screen saver will not. When I try to go into settings with the photos screen saver selected it looks like it loads something but nothing pops up, and then the screen saver window becomes unusable. It doesn't freeze but it acts like there is a second dialog box open and it's waiting for you to finish with that dialog box (if you know what I mean). I can't preview with photos selected either, but it doesn't become unusable.
I would be more concerned with what caused the major crash than little problem with the photo ss.
For that you can try running
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
If you can find a c:\windows\minidump folder and zip the contents of it and attach it to your next post that would be great.
If there's nothing in there or the folder doesn't exist nevermind, I'm just curious what caused the hard reset.

I've read other threads on this issue, couldn't find an answer??? Where should I look? Same issues, running Vista 64 pre installed on a Gateway. Unfortunately this is an issue that seems to plague Vista just like the issue of Vista not remembering folder settings; though there is a registry tweak for the folder issue. I too have had my screensaver mysteriously quit working.

Hello VeronicaMary, Welcome to SevenForums.
How about the time how the screensaver takes effect?
maybe you set it too high or maybe a display driver problem...
another reasons why screensavers wont execute are;
running activity in your pc or sudden movement of your pointing device...
hope our gurus will help you further.
When I was using Windows 7 Pro I had my power settings setup so that my screen would never turn off and the computer itself would not go to sleep. I did however have the screen saver turned on so it would come on after 15 minutes of inactivity. In Windows 10 I set everything up the same way as I had it in Windows 7 and my screen saver only works during that session of Windows and does not work again after a cold boot. One thing I have noticed is that when I set the screen saver wait time to 15 minutes and then shut the PC down with the Fast Boot option enabled, the wait time setting reverts back from 15 minutes to 1 minute after a cold boot. According to another individual on another forum, the wait time value only revert back to 1 if the fast boot option is enabled and his solution was to disable fast booting. To me, however, this is not a solution but a work around and a bad one at that as the wait time should stay at the value the user set it to regardless of the boot option the user selects.
Note that during an attempt to resolve this problem I used the group policy editor to enable the screen saver and to set the default wait time to 15 minutes. Unfortunately, although the grayed out wait time value remains the same (15 minutes) within the screen saver settings, the screen saver will not work unless the policies are set to "Not Enabled" and the wait time is manually set.
Has anyone else seen this behavior and has been able to come up with a working solution that does not... Read more

Hi timhoy, Some times another program running in the background can be set to disable screen saver, or make the pc think their is activity so that it does not initiate the screen saver. See if your system tray has any program like this. It might be something completely different also, but you could see if in power settings what happens if you choose the monitor to turn off after 1 minute. Is that working? If not its even more likely a program is inhibiting the screen saver. Also is it just the lenovo screen saver or all screen savers.... There are some ideas hope some thing works. best, Gadget

I don't want to have to type in a password each time someone wants to use the computer

I went to quokka.com and registerd with them to get a free 500gp screen saver.
Well, I downloaded it and when I try to see it or use it, it comes up with something like file does not start with %&#phd.
I think it as been attached to acrobat reader somehow and that makes it unuseable.
I downloaded it to a file of my own, and I also downloaded it to the windows file, still
the same thing.
Any ideas?

I have my screensaver set for ten minutes and have my monitor set to go blank at 20. That is what yours is doing. If you want to change the time before it goes blank check in your Control Panel under Power Options. You should not leave your screen on all the time, there is no reason. Let it go blank after about 20 minutes.
OK, first time using a message board, don't really know how this works. I've looked at a lot of other messages though and have not found a solution to my problem. My screen savers do not activate. Neither does my monitor automatically turn itself off. I can preview my screensavers just fine, but they will not turn on by itself. I have even made a shortcut to my screensaver on my desktop, but when I open it an explorer window comes up with a little page icon with a couple shapes in it appears in the upper left corner of the explorer window. All of the actual .scr files for my screensavers do not have pictures of the screensavers anymore, they are now just a white page with a little blue explorer e inside. I have been searching for a problem for a while now and have just recently discovered another problem (it may have been there before also and I did not notice) that could be related. When I open up my nvidia display properties and tell it to activate nview on start up an error message comes up about having to shut down "run dll as an app". I don't know if its related or not, but I tried downloading the latest driver from nvidia but it solved neither problem

I work on computers all the time and NEVER came across this situation before. The computer in question is an 'E' Machine, w/1024 meg. memory, Windows XP Home edition, w/SP-2 installed, and all the latest Critical Updates from Microsoft. When I try to set up a Screen Saver, I can select any image I want, but when I click on "Preview", the whoe DeskTop will just blink. I can select any time I want for activation, when the allotted time rolls around, nothing happens. The same with the "Power" settings, Ie. setting the monitor to shut down after 5 minutes does nothing. The monitor stays on.One thing I did notice is the usual selections for Power Options, Ie., Home/Office Desk, Portable/LapTop, were missing. Presentation, Always On, Minimal Power Management, and Max Battery were the only selection available. The computer is not on the 'net as yet, so I don't think some worm or Trojan has infected it, I t also has Norton AntiVirus installed, and yes, I did do a complete scan of the system.ANY Ideas???
Make sure nothing is moving the mouse, and no keys are stuck. If something is stuck or moving, the computer will not go into screensaver.Flame
