HELP! computer won't boot error: 0xc000021a

Question: HELP! computer won't boot error: 0xc000021a

Help!

My PC worked this morning but when I returned from work it now displays on the main Windows load up screen.

"fatal error c0000034 applying update operation 3 of 20816 (_00000...)"

It then says that PC ran into problem and needs to restart and displays error message 0xc000021a

Automatic repair/Diagnosing pc screen runs but then stats it can't repair it. It gives other options like a refresh etc which I tried.
Also mentions Log file D:\Windows\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt

I don't have a recovery or back up and I have some very important music files I have been working on so cannot do a reboot.

Please help!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I went to use my computer this afternoon and it locked up and now I get "error 0X000021A" I have been unable to get it to boot into safe mode or anything else. It has an SSD and I have the original HD which I installed and the computer will boot to that. However it has windows 8 as the operating system. I had done the upgrades to 8.1 and 10 but they are not on the HD? Is there any way to get the windows 10 loaded again? If not, I will continue to get by with Windows 8. I can't get the log information because it won't boot up.

Using Windows 8.1 digital purchase, no CD.

This classic error just started happening yesterday. Had no problem with the pc in the morning, came home late and when I tried to turn it on it didnt got pass the error screen. All I remeber doing in the morning is an adobe flash update which I did not install, just dowloaded to install later. Then nothing else, I was using firefox and did nothing else.

Tried almost everything to solve it.
Every cmd command that is around.
Sfc scannow
Bcdedit into safe mode, with and without cmd, and bootmenu policy.

Pc just wont start in safe mode either.

Tried to restore to previous version, an error comes up saying it was not possible. Tried all three of the available dates.

Tried pressing F8 and starting safe mode from there and still no result.

None of the "repair" options work of course.

I can acsess the BIOS, on the gygabyte screen. Not sure what to chabge in there. Anyways, tried with "fast boot" and same error occurs.

The copy is a digital purchase, so no CD.

Any ideas? Appreciate it

Answer:Error 0xc000021A PC wont boot

Do you have any dump files under C:\Windows\Minidump ? If so, please copy them from that directory and upload them here. You should be able to copy them via command line if that's all you can access (if you're not sure how to do this, let me know and I can help) - either that, or you can burn a Linux LiveCD (such as Ubuntu or Mint), boot off of it, and use a GUI environment to copy them to an external storage device.

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...=vs.85%29.aspx
Try Last Known Good Config boot option.

When you ran SFC, did it find anything? Usually it will only repair stuff if you have a disc in the drive for it to reference.

Have you tried running a disk check? At the command prompt:
chkdsk c: /f /r

I have a g75vw Asus laptop which for the most part has worked fine. Late June the computer simply wouldn't boot into windows giving the error 0xc000021a next to the " " icon. This computer was originally using windows 7 but I upgraded soon after windows 8 was released in October. For about a week before the crashing, I had been using a ubuntu 12.04 live boot jump drive for learning python. It was after a linux boot that the computer crashed but I do not think the events are related. I had also installed connectify.me, a program that turns a laptops wi-fi adapter into a router which worked well for about a week before the crash. I have gone through all of the generic hoops including safe mode(s) system recovery using a usb flash drive, refresh, and the existent yet worthless self diagnosing tool. Microsoft was unable to help without a 100 dollar fee.

I have a bootable USB with Windows 10, and another hard-drive plugged in running Windows 7. I have used the W7 boot to save my personal files which is lucky.

What I have tried:
- Boot to safe mode, disable driver signature
- Bootable USB -> "sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=g:\windows" returns "Microsoft Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation"
- Registry replaced with backups

The SSD seems 'healthy'. Screenshot. CHKDSK passed but "failed to transfer log messages status 50". Are there logs I can locate manually on the troublesome drive and upload?

Any help would be appreciated, let me know if I can provide more information.

I recently updated my PC to windows 10. It worked fine for a couple of weeks, but then it stopped booting. I started it regularly, and it showed the HP logo with the spinning circle, but then it just loaded into a flashing grey and black screen. Booting it in safe mode only got me a blue screen error, with the 0xc000021a error. I've looked pretty much everywhere, and I can't find a fix that works. Sfc scans stop at 100% verification and say "Windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation." I tried "CHKDSK C: /R, but it found no errors. Any other fixes seemed to require launching windows for downloads / file access, and I can't appear to do that. Any help would be much appreciated, so thank you to anyone who replies!

Hi Everyone.
Hopefully I can resolve this... I've tried everything to sort this out but nothing so far has yielded any positive results.

I cannot boot my Win 10 Pro at all. All efforts result in the error C00021a. We can go into what I've done if you like (no problem with that) but for the moment, can anyone tell me how to do an inplace upgrade (Win 10 to Win 10)? I think this will probably sort it out since DISM is unable to do anything constructive. Problem is that I cannot do an "upgrade" as to do that you must be running Windows (normal boot) from the start otherwise Windows Setup throws up an error telling me to start the machine normally and run the upgrade from the external media. Is there any way to do this upgrade to bypass this error? I can't boot normally so it's impossible to fulfill this criteria.

I have a pile of specialised music programs on this machine. I really don't want to have to install everything again as I have them set up "just so". Hope someone can help.

I read the initial admin post about installing a program to help you guys with dump files - but I can't install that either as the machine won't boot into Windows. Of course, I've run the usual sfc scans and dism routines. Sfc won't run and repair - will only check. HDD scans come up ok. Dism routines will check (all comes up ok) but not restore health. Therefore I'm really at the refresh stage. I have boot media to do this but can't get any further...

Answer:BSOD 0xc000021a - Cannot boot Win 10 at all

Maybe this will help? https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport...oot0xc000021a/ (4th post down).

Basically you boot the Windows 10 install disc then go to a Command Prompt.
Copy the existing C:\Windows\system32\config file to a a Backup folder.
Copy C:\Windows\system32\config\RegBack to C:\Windows\system32\config, replacing what's there.
Exit the install and do a normal boot and see if you are back to booting again.

If yes, would be a good idea to do a System Restore to a date before the problem started happening if you have System Restore enabled.

I would like to say I'm sorry in advance. I'm unable to use the required programs to neatly bundle and zip the crashlogs. This is my only computer in the house at the moment and I'm am only able to write this from a live usb of Unbutu I flashed at university. As the title suggests, I can't boot into my laptop to run the programs so I have no other means of presenting the info. I was only able to get the logs, again, by using the live USB and digging through the HDD. (It's not letting me install WINE either)

As for the actual problem itself, I have no idea what to do. It bluescreened randomly yesterday and never let me back on. It lets me on the automatic repair tool (which does nothing) and the command prompt. I ran chkdsk and memory dio and both came up clean. BIOS works no problem. I tried disabling signatures and it still crashes on restart. I honestly don't think it's a hardware problem at this point, but I could be wrong.

Any help would be appreciated. If there's more than just the minidump that needs to be included please tell me.

Thanks

Quick edit: These seem to be the dumps for the initial few bluescreens. If I recall correctly, it was a Kernal_inpage error that kicked off this whole mess. It seems to not be creating new dumps each time I get that weird hex-looking error (0xc000021a) each time I try to boot up. I can only tell by the filename, since it says December 1st on the dump and I've gone through more than a few bluescreens on the 2nd.

I have been struggling with error 0xc000021a for a while now and can not find a way to fix the issue. I tried using sfc /scannow, but all I get is a message saying:

the sfcdetails is attached.

I also tried using dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth , but get Error: 3017 when at around 75% during the process.

dism log file is attached as well

I tried resetting my laptop, but get Error: There was a problem resetting your pc

The only way I have found to get past error 0xc000021a is to disable driver signature enforcement, but this is only a temporary solution. Every time I restart or reboot my pc it will give me the error which is really annoying. By "dead" I mean it is not doing anything.
Hi. I started my Samsung laptop today to find the entitled error. No "help" I have come across has worked, especially on microbrain's website. It says it is collecting some "error info" and has not moved from 0% since it started nearly 25 minutes ago. As soon as I saw it I knew it was a fake non-error, not doing anything, and certainly not fixing anything.
Pressing F8 is ignored by this wonderful piece of nothing, and I can't make the drive work via a USB dock using another windose OS on another drive, either.
How can I fix it?
Thanks.

It keeps on either going to the Samsung splash screen with the rotating icon then not doing anything, yo the error/error info-"collecting" screen immediately where it reboots immediately and alleges to try again, or it mentions it is "preparing automatic repair", which I don't know why it's called that because it does NOTHING automatically/by default, and does NOT repair ANYTHING.

So it all started last night when i accidentally tripped on my power cord, unplugging it from tthe tower during the login screen. At first, I thought nothing of it, and I just restarted the computer. But unfortunately I was met with the BSOD with that error code. All of the online solutions I have encountered that don't involve removing all my files or using a windows 8 installation disk I have tried.
So then after the BSOD I restart and get to a screen saying automatic repair failed. I try to refresh the PC- no luck. I'm definitely not resetting my PC and losing all my files so I go into advanced options. Foolishly I have no backup USB or anything so I try a system restore. Nothing happens, same old BSOD. Then I try the various command console solutions i found in the advanced settings command prompt. All of them don't work and give me a reply saying that the image was not found or "drwtsn32.exe" was not found in the image specified or whatever. It is always prefaced with "x:\windows\system32", not C:\. I cannot start in safe mode and disabling driver signature enforcement also didn't work. Any help before i just buy a windows 8 installation disk would be greatly appreciated.

Alright so here I go... I get home from work and boot my PC, only to find it wasn't responding to anything and the clock dissappeared from the welcome screen. So, as most other people would, I hard reset it as it would not respond to the power button.

However, I seem to have created a problem for myself... I'm now stuck in a bootloop in which the PC refuses to fix itself. I start it... I get error 0xc000021a in a bsod and it reboots to try and repair, in which that fails. I have tried a 2 separate system restores, both 28th and 23rd of January, to no avail.

Sorry that I cannot create any dump of any kind, as I can't even access any part of my PC.

I've tried other methods such as the DISM command, only to get some error stating that I'm supposed to use an /online command. Eh?
I've tried booting into safe mode, only to get the exact same error.
I cannot refresh or reboot as I do not have access to a disk or flash drive at this point (my kid sister snapped my disc in a fit of rage, irrelevant but worth noting.)

I can't even chkdsk because it says something about the HDD being locked?

For future reference, this is a custom built PC so there's no telling what I did.

My system specs are as follows:
Gigabyte GA-H81M-HD3 mobo
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
8gb DDR3 ADATA Ram.
Core-i5 4460 @3.2gh.
Sapphire HD 5850 1gb

I kept my computer on over night and I accidentally hit the print screen button. I have a special program called 'Greenshot' so it overlays the screen with a grid region selector and lets you drag and save. I didn't drag and save so I left it like that over night.

As soon as I woke the computer up it froze the entire screen nothing could be down. Also a message pop up about failed nvidia drivers. I decided to just force reset my computer since their was nothing I could do.

Boot it up and got all the way to the logo and loading screen. A few seconds after I BSOD with the error 0xc000021a.

Reset the computer and the auto repair screen came up. I won't let me reinstall windows w/ keeping personal files, safe mode doesn't help nor does the force drivers option, I have no idea if windows have "Boot from last known boot" or have it verity all system64 files like windows 7. Nothing work in the repair menu but the command prompt which is label X Drive instead of C drive by default.

I heard windows 10 likes to secretly update bios so I don't know it that could be the problem. Anyways I have had boot loops in the past where if I plug too many usb devices in the back IO panel the computer will just boot loop.

Ok, I clicked 'update and restart' while turning off my Surface RT, and instead of booting my OS, Windows collecte 'some error information' and restarted to a BitLocker error screen asking me for my recovery key. So, I went on the microsoft website with my phone and found the recovery key, typed it in and tapped 'Continue', but it eventually says 'Automatic Repair couldn't repair your PC'. I tap 'Advanced options' and then 'Continue:Exit and continue to Windows RT'', but I just end up at the original BitLocker error screen. If I go to 'Troubleshoot' and try 'Refresh your PC', it says 'the drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again. I tap 'Cancel' (the only option) and try 'Advanced options' then 'Automatic Repair', I get the same error screen as before, so I tap 'Startup Settings' and then 'Restart'. Eventually, I get a BitLocker screen that says ''you must enter your recovery key to access Startup Settings: to protect the privacy of your data, BitLocker has prevented the unlocking of your drive. You'll need to enter the recovery key.' Then there's nothing but some text at the bottom telling me to 'press enter or the windows key'. The problem here is that when I press enter or the Windows key, nothing happens. It just stays on that screen for a minute or so, and then ... Read more

Hello,
I have installed Windows 8 Pro on my PC and on my Laptop. The problem is since yesterday the laptop ist showing the error 0XC000021A. It only writes that my PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. After a restart it just writes the system must be recovered and if I click on "Recover" it only shows the Win8 logo and nothing happens. I tried it several times and always get the same error.
The biggest Problem is I cant access the BIOS and change the boot device, so its not so easy to reinstall Windows. I always have to open the device and to format the hard disk on an other PC.
Is there any way to solve this problem without reinstalling Windows? I cant access the PC so all the other ways written in the internet don't work in my case.

I recently bought a refurbished thinkpad (T420 i5 2540, SSD, 8gb ram, NVidia nvs 4200) with windows 7 professional. It worked fine at first, I could turn it on without a problem. However, as soon as windows updates installed, and I rebooted it, it refused to turn on. The power and Bluetooth lights would come on, then shut off after a few seconds. I unplugged, removed the battery, and pressed the power button a few times then held it, but that didn't help. After several attempts it finally boots, but BSODs as soon as it gets to "windows is starting". If I leave it for a long time (several hours) and try again, it often starts up normally. This whole process has happened many, many times over the last 3 days, with little difference each time. Launching startup repair just BSODs and it goes back to not turning on at all. System restore doesn't work, and I tried formatting the hard drive and going for a fresh install. It booted normally at first, but as soon as windows updates kicked in, it started failing to boot again. I was able to get a single crash dump (which should be attached). The bug check was 0xc000021a, on ntoskrnl.exe, at address ntoskrnl+72a40. I've tested SSD, ram, processor, etc., but they don't have any issues. I've never really had to deal with repeated BSODs before, so I have no idea what's going on.

In this case, it would be the best to go for another clean reinstall.

Because, from the description it appears to be a driver issue, a driver is conflicting during startup; and at the time the BSOD occurs, it does not have sufficient information to record the failing module in the dump.

Perform a clean reinstall exactly as suggested here: Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 .... hopefully it will solve this issue.

What machine type and operating system do you have?
Is there any text with the error.
Try the following:
- Boot to Safe Mode, if that works, then it is a problem with non-essential startup drivers, services, or startup programs.
- If no go, try Last Known Good Configuration, then run a malware and rootkit scans.

This morning, I needed to check my emails so tried booting up my laptop only for the BSOD saying "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We are just collecting some error info and then we will restart for you." I allow it to reach 100% but whenever it starts to restart my laptop just freezes. No matter how many times I boot my computer this always seem to happen which is why I am unable to follow the BSOD posting instructions. Hello all, Im new here an need some help. I am trying to fix a friends Dell Dimension 8300. It was filled with tons of viruses. I got most of them, but after a restart I keep getting the BSOD error 0xC000021A followed by Cx0000034. I can't boot into any of the options when I press F8. I still get the message regardless. His CD drive doesn't work, so I cant boot from a disk. I removed the HD and put it in an enclosure and hooked it up to my computer to try and diagnose the problem from my computer. Is there anyone that can help me Can I replace files on his HD from my Windows XP Home Edition SP2 that will make it work again?? (He is running XP home SP2). I have not added any hardware or Ram. Just Windows live onecare to remove the viruses. Thanks in advance for whoever replies!

And yes, I have search all the knowledge bases and this forum and nothing has worked so far.

Answer:BSOD 0xC000021A Fatal Error

For anyone who has or will have the same problem. Here is what I did.

I opened up the tower for the Dell 8300 and took out the HD and the CD drive. (the CD drive didnt have the right drivers and can't find them, but it ran).

I plugged the IDE cable (master) into the CD drive and power cable.

Then I plugged the Slave end of the IDE cable into the HD.

Under settings (F2) I changed all the settings to "Auto" under the drive configuration settings. And changed the boot order to boot from the CD drive.

Then I inserted the Win XP CD into the drive, and rebooted.

Then I pressed "R" after the Win XP CD loaded all the files. The "R" is the repair Win XP installation. Everything loaded onto the HD without any data loss! The computer finally boots up now. Now I just have to put it back together LOL.

Yesterday I successfully installed Windows 10 as per Microsoft instructions only to find today an error message stating “Error 0xc000021a Terminate yes or no”. I clicked yes thinking this was the correct course of action, but unfortunately, I have not been able to connect to Windows since.
When starting my PC a message appears stating there has been a problem and will restart in a few moments. An automatic repair screen appears followed by a screen asking “Choose your keyboard layout”. This screen is frozen and I’m unable to use the mouse or touchscreen. I can proceed no further.
My PC affected is an HP Touch smart 310

Asus S200E notebook, Win 8 Pro

I recently took in this laptop for my neighbor. The original idea was to scan and clean up the system. I set the laptop up in my office, ran an MSE full scan with no issues. Then ran a full Malwarebytes scan, which returned a few pups, which were removed.

After tending to other matters, I turned back to the laptop to find notification that there was a problem and windows had to restart. I ran another MWB scan only to have the system restart again. This time, the system tried to repair itself with automatic repair. No go. All reboots ended up back at the advanced startup options screen. No ability to restore the system image, no system restore. All I could get to was the cmd prompt.

Googling turned up all sorts of people with this issue (mostly older posts), but very few solutions.

This fix got my system booted again by removing pending update operations.

Apparently, an MS update is the source of the problem. To further reinforce this, until I turned off automatic updating, it would happen again. I also disconnected the machine from my network to revoke its internet access.

So the machine is no longer having start issues, but I'm not sure which update it is. I have 17 pending optional updates, but those haven't installed, so I doubt they're an issue.

I checked update history and there are 29 failed updates. All are dated within the period that the laptop has been in my possession.

I think it would be quit tedious to hide each one individ... Read more

Hi All..

I was reviewing my windows updates and saw two optional updates that were pending. First one was for MS office and it went through fine. Second one was some update to AMD vision control center. During that update screen flashed couple of times and went for re-start. After that I am unable to get into the system. I tried safe mode/debugging/low resolution mode etc.. But all resulted in the same blue screen with the 0xc000021a error message.

I am able to go only to command prompt. Nothing else (fortunately I am able to backup my photos by connecting external hard drive and using command prompt). I checked the SRT log file but it doesn't say any issue. All passed.

I tried refresh PC but it came back and said "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes made".

I tried using win ISO image bootable flash drive. It couldn't get through me in (I just tried with PC repair option when I booted with ISO image).

Is there a way I can get over it without re-installing?

Thanks in advance...

Answer:Windows 8.1 - Error 0XC000021A after optional updates

try.....
STEP 1: Enter cmd
STEP 2: Now in the Command prompt just type System Root\System32\Drwtsn32.exe -I?. This process will register the Dr.Watson as the default system debugger which has to be -> Press Enter.
STEP 3: Again type System Root\System32\Drwtsn32.exe and then in the window choose the option which are Append to existing log file, Create crash dump and Visual Notification.
STEP 4: After setting it up restart the computer by pressing F8 in the startup and select Last known good configuration.
STEP 5: Once it got booted up, again restart the system in the normal and now try to look at your optional updates to make sure not to install whatever may have broken it before.

If this does not work then you may have to reinstall.

Hello again!

I'm fixing a computer for a friend of mine. The computer at issue is running Windows XP, and suffers from the apparently not-so-uncommon STOP: 0XC000021a error with WINLOGON.exe. The computer was infected with a virus that caused the problem, NOT a hardware or new software installation.

I've spent hours researching a solution to the problem with no avail. Most guides reccommend reverting to the "Last Known Good Configuration". I tried this first, and it didn't work. He also has no Windows restore points to use.

The second common solution is to use a Windows XP CD to do a repair installation. As luck would have it, he doesn't have his Windows XP CD. I don't have one, either, since I've been using Vista for a while.

I've definitely isolated the problem to WINLOGON.exe, using DrWatson. I CAN boot the computer into Safe Mode, but I cannot boot it normally. The restart and BSOD occur roughly 1-2 minutes after the XP login screen appears.

I'd also like to note that I've used AVG anti-virus and Spybot on the computer in Safe Mode, as well as Malware Bytes. I believe that the initial virus is gone, but I can't be sure until the problem is fully resolved.

As this is my first post, I did look for similar issues, but didn't find one.

I am by no means a computer expert, but have grown up around them, and have used them actively for the majority of my life, so I have a fair familiarity with them.

I recently completed my first PC build, and everything worked flawlessly. Windows 10 installed and ran fine, all my hardware was recognized without issue, and everything updated automatically upon startup. My goal was a strictly game-centric build, no overclocking or anything.

I come home today, and realize that my PC goes into the windows auto repair immediately, prompting me with an 0xc000021a error. My motherboard debug LCD was prompting me with b2 (short) 99 (short) a2 (long) my manual is very vague about it, but from what I have gleaned, it has to do with my peripherals, so I unplugged mouse and keyboard (supposedly 99 represents one or the other), no luck.

I initially tried to do a system reset, and it got to about 20% (both with and without saving personal files) and said that the process could not be completed, so I resorted to safe mode.I tried booting the computer in safe mode just to try to make some progress, and then upon rebooting to enter safe mode, it froze. I let it sit for several minutes before I manually reset the computer. Now it cycles between black screen, and MSI logo back and forth. I can enter BIOS, if I time it right. I can't get it to bring up the windows advanced options screen (to do system... Read more

Asus S200E notebook, Win 8 Pro, UEFI.
I think it would be quit tedious to hide each one individual... Read more

I bought my yoga 2 13 in November 2014. It has worked well till last week. Now it freezes for 10-20 seconds on the simplest click to another window. I got an error xode 0xc00021a. Answer:error code 0xc000021a and freezing for a few seconds on yoga 2 13

Hi rajeshprasad1 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Error 0xc000021a  may be a system file error on base check but may also hide underlying issue  like bad sectors or drive. On other scenarios , this error can cause system not to boot to Windows .

Best that you take time to back up everything that is important or if that would be hard, try to get data recovery tech / center to slave the harddrive for the back up if possible and have then run a harddrive diagnostics at the same time.

Would it work ok on safe mode?
Would you be able to run individual Storage test using this link .

Update us how it goes .

Today, I've been racking my brain trying to figure out how to recover from a problem with winlogon.exe which caused a "Windows logon process terminated" error with codes 0xc00021a and 0xc000034.

I found this article and it helped but didn't solve the problem. I thought I was faced with having to run a repair of the Windows installation, if not re-install.

That is until I decided to scan winlogon.exe using one of the online scanning services, like Jotti or Virus Total, to see if winlogon.exe had been infected. That's when I discovered the file was MISSING from \windows\system32. A Google search on a missing winlogon.exe file turned up this thread which provided the solution I needed!!!!

Many thanks to "coderitr" for your post! Copying winlogon.exe from \windows\servicepackfiles to \windows\system32 solved the problem beautifully!

Thanks!!!!!

Peace...

I threw the dump into the debugger, and it tells me, "Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly." This is bad for you because it means your dump doesn't have enough information to explain RPC's crash. Given the age and popularity of Win8, I'd suspect some third party driver / service is mucking things up. It could be the copy protection (SafeDisc) some game installed.Try updating drivers (your sound driver was released a year before your OS) and / or uninstalling customized drivers (the Razer stuff). How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

I booted my backup PC with Windows 10 Preview on it after seeing the availability of build 10041 announced. The update was there along with a lot of other invalid updates. I boot up WIN10 at at least every other day to see what's new. So I was surprised see so many of these other updates. Many of them were for Intel HD 4600 graphics and ASUS Bluetooth hardware that would be imbedded on the MB. But my Win10 PC is AMD based and has AMD Radeon 3300 on-board graphics and no on-board Bluetooth. The strange thing is that those updates that cause the error are appropriate for my other main PC which is ASUS Z97-PRO and Intel i-469K based with Intel on-board HD4600 graphics... and ASUS on-board Bluetooth. It's spooky but it is as if windows update is confusing its search with my other Windows 7 PC. In WIN10 9926 Windows Update you can't decline an update that the system finds for you.

The system suddenly does a restart and then it can't find the C: drive. I have to power off the power supply for 10 sec and restart to get back to being able to see the SATA1 drive. I had to work through three cycles of those invalid updates and on the last I got the final 21a error code... after that on the next Win10 boot the build 10041 started to install normally.

Hello all,

I was asked to disinfect a friend's computer that was absolutely infested with virii, malware, spyware, and the like. I began by installing and running AVGh antivirus. After running a full scan, I was asked how I wanted to proceed regarding a particular infected file (unfortunately I did not write down the filename) and I choose either delete/qyuantine. Immediately
following, I was greeted with a blue screen that read 0xC000021A error. Since then, I have tried every possible way to boot: Safe Mode, Last previous configuration, etc. I also tried booting from the Dell utility partitiion and all those tests Passed (even the OS/Boot up test- go figure). Because all of these boots were unsuccessful, I decided the only way to fix this would be a fresh format. Well I can't even do that! I choose boot from CD and still get the blue screen with the same error! How in the world can I fix this if I can't even format and reinstall the OS? Any ideas?

I have googled endlessly and failed to come up with a solution. I read Microsoft's documentation but there is no way for me to follow the steps since I cannot access any kind of prompt.

Thanks so much in advance.

Hi everyone,

My friend just began getting a fatal system error when he tries turning his computer on. It loads up all and displays the background, and then crashes. The error is a blue screen:

STOP: C0000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process System process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

I've been unable to find anything to correct this problem. It can boot up into safe mode but not safe mode with networking capabilities (it then does the same thing). Anyone know of any solutions? Thanks!

Where do I even start?
A client of mine came to me with their HP desktop and were saying it could not boot and restore points were not even working. I thought I would have this worked out in no time. I was wrong.

Here is the details for everything:
- Error code is 0X000021a and I can only see it when I, attempt to, boot into Safe Mode (Which all Safe Mode options do not work.)
- Normal booting into the OS results in a mainly blue screen with thin lines and streaks cutting through the screen and nothing is distinguishable.
- I tried System Restore and there is nothing there to access, says Windows.
In this next section, I run commands from the Command Prompt in the Windows Troubleshooting section of the boot.
- SFC scans result in this now: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."
- Chkdsk: Regular Read-Only mode tells me "No further Action is required" and running the extended commands, such as /f /r, takes a huge amount of time and I only did that once. No dice.
- DISM commands seem like such a good idea but I can run only one of them and it does not help me in any way. Say I run "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth" it gives me "Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tool. Version 10.0.14393.0.
Error: 50. DISM does not support servicing Windows PE with the /Online option."
And if I try any other DISM commands, more errors, like Error 2.
- System Repair does not work.

had one last week that was a little different and it just magically disappeared (I'm building a new computer as soon as this semester ends if this computer will last that long).

I have MOST everything backed up on an external hard drive, but when i had tried to copy the my documents folder, it kept giving me an error, and I don't remember if I copied any of it over or not. The programs are all backed up, but AFAIK any documents I had are still on there, and I'd REALLY REALLY like to make a clean sweep through the computer and get as much copied over as possible.

It's windows xp home with SP3. It started after running an AVG scan overnight and the computer went on standby during the scan. My mom tried to wake the computer up and it froze and when i rebooted it (hit the power button once and it gave me the option to shut down, restart or go to standby like it would if i had gone to the start menu and done it) it gave me a BSOD (process1_initialization_failed), and i tried again and it gave me a different BSOD (the one im posting about).

I have a recovery console.ISO on a CD that I found off of these forums and it works, but I DO NOT have the windows XP CD. It's a Dell dimension 4600 (from late 2003 hehe).

I'd rather not have to wipe the HD or buy a new one because I don't want to spend money on this computer...If I can fix it with recovery console or by getting a windows cd from someone (if i can find one) that would be ideal.

Hey all, long-time lurker here. I wanted to start off by saying thank you, as I've found the info posted here (regarding other misc. problems I've had) to be very helpful

I'll start off with my specs:
Laptop: MSI GX640
CPU: Intel Core i5-430M
Memory: DDR3 2 GBx2
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 5850 w/ 1 GB DDR5 VRAM

I don't know if any other information is necessary for this particular problem, but if there's any relevant info that I missed please do let me know.

Anyway, right now I have a problem with the above mentioned error. It first started while playing XCOM, and it pretty much happened every XCOM session thereafter, so I tried looking for some ways to DIY troubleshoot it. To that end, I've tried sfc, disk check, virus and malware scans, and also updating my drivers. All the scans didn't find anything unusual, and currently I'm pretty sure my drivers are up-to-date.

I want to add a couple of things here, just in the interest of providing as much info as possible, though I'm not sure if it will be pertinent. Anyway, for updating my drivers I used a third-party program called SlimDrivers, and I think it worked properly. I realize driver update software can be sketchy, but it had good reviews on cnet, which I suppose was as reputable a review source as I could find. But moving on, I goofed when updating my video card drivers, as I downloaded a version that, it turned out, was incompatible for my laptop. This became apparent when the top of my screen started flic... Read more

Tried booting 3 times with same result. Dual booting 10TP with 8.1 Pro. 10TP boots, I log in fine, and about 20 seconds in it states that MS Mouse & Keyboard Center has failed. It writes a report to send. Then about 10/15 seconds later I get a blue reboot/collecting data screen with a "STOP 0xC000021A" error. So I look that up: ttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/156669

That states some causes.

?Mismatched system files have been installed.
?A Service Pack installation has failed.
?A backup program that is used to restore a hard disk did not correctly restore files that may have been in use.
?An incompatible third-party program has been installed.

I do have an MS Arc mouse. This all runs fine in 8.1. I?m thinking OK, MS Mouse & Keyboard Center had installed via Windows Update automatically and perhaps it didn't load correctly or it?s incompatible. I look to see that it?s not working in JDobbsy1987 thread of working/not working apps. Sure enough it's there, although that thread hasn?t been updated lately. Anywho, I know I won?t have time to go in and uninstall or any other task. Also keeping in mind the other potential causes and suggestions/remedies. So I go back to 8.1 and make a 10TP Safe Mode. Hi guys,

Basically I've acquired an old PC from a friend, I don't really know a great deal about the computer except that it is an Winfast motherboard with an AMD 64 Athlon processor.

I've been trying to fix the PC but when I try to do a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate from a disc the computer repeatedly crashes and shuts down after copying files reaches 100% or before.

I have also tried to load a Windows 8 installer and a Ubuntu live CD, but it still seems to crash after running for a while.

I have feeling that it may be an error relating to the graphics/video card, (which is intergrated into the motherboard). Because sometimes the screen shows just lines. I tried playing with the bios once (pheonix bios) but this stopped it from booting and gave the post beeps to tell me there was a problem with the video card. However I reset the CMOS on the motherboard and it now boots but still crashes when trying to install windows 7.

Are there any other ways around this? i.e. disabling the video card manually, or any other solutions? Kinda hoping this isn't a hardware related problem.
Thanks in advance!

Answer:Boot error, unknown origin, ideas to make this computer boot?

Is the Windows Ultimate disc a retail copy? Or a burned disc? Or?

Is it a 64-bit disc?

I have never heard of the Winfast motherboard brand. It may be too old to support this version of Windows?

Hello,

Im very sorry I couldnt be as descriptive as possible in my tittle description, I will do so in full now.

Last night a storm caused the power to flicker and then go completely off and on for a few minutes. Now during the boot up process on my fathers computer, I get a prompt screen from windows telling that due to a incorrect shut down I should choose a method of booting; safe mode, safe mode with networking, start windows normally.. (you know the rest of the gib) If I tell windows to start normally, it gets to the final booting phase showing the small blue progress bar, but the computer resets itself.

It also will not go into safe mode, nor safe mode with command prompt, no kind of safe mode what so ever. Essentially, the computer gets right up the point of finally kicking 100% and then a reset which brings me back through the normal booting process and to the choose a method of boot screen.

My pc won't boot up XP due to error message hal.dll is corrupt or missing. I sent for XP recovery cd from Dell (my pc is a Dell Dimension 4600) and tried to change the boot sequence in the bios so that it would boot from the recovery cd. No luck - it just keeps prompting the hal.dll error message or if I hit control/alt/delete the Dell logo comes on, and I get a "keyboard error" if I try to hit the F2 key to get into the bios. I've since taken it to Best Buy Geek Squad (they charged me $70 just to look at it!) Reinstall XP is going to cost me another $130, plus anything else they do. I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle and expense (they said the motherboard may be bad, or the hard drive may need to be replaced.....). Maybe it would be cheaper to just buy another unit. If so, can anyone recommend a good website for doing that - I would consider a refurbished unit if the website was reputable. (I am on a budget here) Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:XP won't boot up - computer won't boot up due to hal.dll error

If your plans are to go though the Geek Squad it will almost always be cheaper to buy another computer - sad but true.

It really isn't that hard to reformat your own computer. I would start with that before you go out and purchase a new machine...

Today, I had this problem:

My computer froze, it was just displaying black (it was turned on, just not displaying anything). And then, it came up with a screen about 5 minutes later. It just said windows was loading files with a loading bar a the bottom, that took about 30 minutes to complete and then it said that there had been an error with the booting and would i like to repair the boot files, when i clicked yes, it took about 5 minutes then came up with another messge saying that it could not be fixed, would i like to send an error report, so i did.

It then repeated this for about 5 times. Then i decided to insert the vista disc and repair it from that. The bios screen came up saying would i like to boot from the disc (press any key) but i am unsure whether i actually pressed a key or it disappeared. Then it booted normally

Please help me Thanks in advance

I downloaded Win 10, all seemed to be Okay until 97 % finished then Error "Not enough room", however, it did finish the download. Then I discovered that Win 10 downloaded to the recovery partition, which I did NOT expect I thought it auto downloaded to the system drive C: but it didn't. I shut the computer down and then turned it back on and all I get is a black screen. I can do absolutely nothing. The computer is totally useless!!!
Is there a solution to this problem?

Hello,

I had my computer on upstairs while I was eating and the power shut off and I went to the computer and it turned on but gave me a message windows cannot start because file windows/system32/config/system is missing or corrupted. I have been all over the internet on this other computer and all I found is using a recovery cd or the windows cd, which I no longer have either, is there another way to fix this or should I try to borrow a friends windows cd?

Thanks!

Answer:Cannot boot up computer, getting an error.

You would need to recover the crucial Windows files in order for the computer to boot itself. So yes, try to borrow a friends windows CD

I am having trouble getting into my computer. Everytime I try to get in the notebook, it crashes immediately and tries to restart itself. After failing to restart again, it brings me to an error screen. It says to me "A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. It also gives me the error code of "0xc000000f". It tells me I need recovery tools on installation media, but I have none. My product number is (or at least I think, I'm not really sure how to find this number) E0K74UA#ABA.  What do I do now? Is my computer done for?

Answer:Computer Boot Error

Jsameist Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about your laptop not booting and wanted to help. These problems are generally due to one of two basic problems:1) Failed hard drive2) Corrupted/missing boot loader filesAs to the first, please follow the directions in this link for testing your hard drive: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00439024If that confirms your drive has failed, then you need to replace it.  Please report back if that is the case.As to the second, you will need access to a working PC for this step in order to create the media needed to repair your PC boot loader.Once you have that, please download and create Win10 install media from this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10Yes ... I know that is for Win10, but it uses the same generation boot loader as Win8x, so it can be used to do boot loader repairs for Win8x as well as for Win10.Boot from the media you created, and follow the directions in this link:  http://www.windowswally.com/how-to-fix-error-code-0xc0000185/You will probably have to run Startup Repair three times for it to fix all the boot loader problems. When done, your PC should boot OK.Good Luck

how do I get my acer aspire 5251 to boot from the disc drive instead of the hard drive

Answer:computer will not boot because of internal error

Go into the BIOS and set CD/DVD drive as the first boot device and re-boot.If the error is so great that you cannot get into the BIOS, then you are not going to be able to boot from a CD /DVD drive either.Stuart

My computer restarted yesterday and came up with a black screen which says that there is a ci.dll error.

The computer was originally xp with a free vista upgrade.

I've put the vista upgrade disc in and tried startup repair - this has now been running for over 15 hours.

Is there anyway of quitting the startup repair so that I can get back to the screen to do a system restore??

Any help would be much appreciated.

Teresa

Answer:Computer wont boot - Ci.dll error

Just to add, i've now downloaded a new vista repair disc thinking that perhaps mine wasnt working - the same thing happens, it just goes straight into startup repair and seems to hang on Attempting repairs

One day, I turned on my computer and it would not start. It went through auto repair, nothing. I did the refresh option, nothing. It said there is no bootable device. Eventually it said that the error was d0000452. I have seen some repair things to download (that I found on my kindle) but I can't turn the computer on to download them. I need help. Thanks.P.S. I don't know much about computers

Hi all,

I went through the read first sticky but that didn't really get me an answer that i was looking for at this time.

I have NOT recently installed any new hardware to the computer.

THe problem is as follows:
When the computer starts up, it does everything right (detecting all the hardware and all) and after the initial screen, it loads a few more things and then it goes through the boot list. It recognises theres no CD ROM and moves onto the HDD. This is where the problem is. It stays in this position trying to boot from the HDD for a while but it's just not happening.

I know there is no problem with the HDD because i ran Ubuntu through the CD and i could still access all my HDD Data.

I've tried changing the boot process so HDD comes first before CDROM and it doesn't go to CDROM in the first place like this so thats ruled out.
There was another option on BIOS to ignore all errors. This didn't help.

Initially, i was on the computer. A handheld drill was being used in the room next to mine and on the initial rev was when my computer went. They COULD be connected but i don't know. I have a surge protector and my computer still works and my monitor is fine so i don't think anything is burnt.

After the computer turned off from the possible rev of the drill, the computer automatically re-started and this is when the inevitable non-boot HDD started.

Any help to resolve this problem is really appreciated.

I have read the solution to this problem, but how can I get the computer to boot so that I can apply the solution for the Wireless card. As soon as my laptop comes on the THINK PAD logo shows for about 2 secounds then" Error 1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in- Power off and remove the miniPCI network card." I've powered the laptop off and removed the card, but that does not work.  What can be done about this? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Error 1802, computer will not boot.

Welcome to the forum! The fix that you want to apply must be done without the wireless card installed... Hope this helps.

Hello,

I have a problem with my computer. (obviously)
After starting the installation of service pack 3 for windows XP, I get prompted many times that Access is denied to the registry. A short while later into the install, the installer crashes. I then get prompted with this message: Access Denied. I click ok, and a patch uninstaller comes up and removes the service pack files and registry keys. Now it prompts me to restart my computer. I do, and my computer will now not boot. I get as far as the option to enter the bios, but after that the screen turns black, and it stays there.

Im hoping this can be fixed without re-installing windows, somehow....

If you know please post here!

Thanks in advance,
sky geek.

Ok, I've just built a brand new computer with only one old component in it, my SSD harddrive with Win 7 installed on it. Sadly it wont boot for me.. =(

It begins to start up and a bluescreen that dissappears so quickly you can't read appears for half a second, and then the system goes into the regular black screen and harps on about that windows couldn't be started normally, blah blah blah..

Now, I've tried to use the repair option with the install disc, and of course, with my luck, that didn't work either, the only error message that came up was 0x0... whatever that means... it didn't really say anything else. I guess I could do a clean install on another drive if I get desperate, but this is a good drive, and I would really like to use this one without having to go through a clean install with all the rigamarole that entails.. so, if any of you computer geniuses can help me out it would be much appreciated...

Oh, and for the record, I know that there's nothing wrong with this hard drive, because I just plucked it from my old fully functional computer.
