Missing some Programs in Programs and Features (Uninstall a Program) Menu

Question: Missing some Programs in Programs and Features (Uninstall a Program) Menu

A family member was tricked in to downloading and installing some stuff from the Internet on to a laptop that has Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit with Media Center. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff that was installed or if these problems existed earlier.

In Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, not all installed programs are listed. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letters Mi.. or Mo.. Only 14 programs are listed. In Start menu, All Programs, I think some programs are missing. The list seems unusually short. The laptop has a Win 7 style Start menu because IObit's Start Menu 8 program is installed. In Control Panel, System and Security, Administrative Tools, there were no shortcuts to the tools. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.

I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date but that didn't bring back the missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues.

I guess the missing programs could be the result of malware. I don't remember exactly what I removed. I only used the free version of MBAM to clean up. I tried restoring everything MBAM quarantined but that didn't help. I requarantined the stuff. It was mostly, if not all, PUPs.

Any ideas for bringing back the programs that should be in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Missing some Programs in Programs and Features (Uninstall a Program) Menu

I gave up. I restored the operating system and reinstalled everything. No problems now so I guess the problems of missing programs and BitDefender not working was caused by the malware/PUPs- a buggy installer.

Hi,today I went into my control panel to add/remove programs and I have only around 15 programs listed whereas I used to have loads,in the windows update section it also shows only two updates installed.
Does anyone know what caused this and how I can fix it?
thanks

Answer:programs missing from add/uninstall programs menu

Have you recently used a registry cleaner (CCleaner, System Mechanic...)? That would be the kind of symptom you would expect from running such crapware.

Hopefully, the DisplayName values are the only ones missing in the registry, and the rest of the Uninstall keys are still intact.
Press the Windows key + R to open a Run box.
Type regedit
Press Enter.
Browse to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
Click the "+" sign to expand Uninstall.
Locate the missing programs in the subkeys under Uninstall.
One by one, look in the right pane and find DisplayName.
Double-click DisplayName and type the name of the program.
Next time you open "Programs and Features", the entry should be back, as long as there isn't more damage done to the registry keys.
If there is already a value for DisplayName and you still can't see the entry in "Programs and Features", please ensure that the value doesn't contain more than 63 characters, or the name will not display in "Programs and Features".

Wish to uninstall programs but the only tabs present in programs and features are the "organize" and "view" tabs. there are no "uninstall", "change" or "repair" commands.Where have the "uninstall" etc. command tabs gone to and how do I get them back?message edited by Oleneygah

Answer:uninstall tab missing from programs and features in vista

I came across this problem a while ago and eventually found it was an issue with a corrupted registry so the first thing to try, if it's only recently happened, is a System Restore. If that doesn't work then the only option I found was to use a 3rd party uninstaller like Revo or possibly CCleaner (though I suspect the latter uses the same registry entries so may not work). You may find that it's only older programs that have the problem, newer ones will probably still have the option and programs you reinstall or install fresh will also be ok. I suspect it's one of the joys of Vista."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..." Pink Floydmessage edited by johnr

I have run into a strange problem. I have searched and found other people with the same issue but no solution. Almost all of the programs in the programs and features list in the control panel are gone. the programs are still there in the start menu and can be opened. But I can not open pdf files on my desktop anymore, I would uninstall adobe and reinstall it but it isn't in the list to remove it. Thanks for the help.

I recently opened up my uninstall list and a lot of my programs are missing i tried restoring my computer to before i downloaded quick time (which i think is what the issue was) but the restore came up with an error 0xc0000022 saying it failed to restore, i tried an sfc scan and it came up with something being corrupt that would be fixed on restart, i restarted and tried to restore again but it still did not work.

I have uninstalled quick-time already but the problem is still there, also my antivirus picked up root-kit in hamachi so i uninstalled that and did a full system scan from boot with avast, i haven't tried restoring again in case i lose any progress or the virus is restored.

So basically i have two problems: Programs missing from my programs and features list, and System restore not working 0xc0000022

I know i should do something with the CBS log to check but ill leave that for you guys to decide, thanks for the help.

Answer:programs missing from programs and features, recovery failed 0xc000002

Download and run Revo Uninstaller for the missing programs.

As far as your rootkit, simply removing the program doesn't remove the malware. Run a scan with Malwarebytes anti-Rootkit, then run Malwarebytes standard and then run Eusing to clean up the entry points of your virus.

Also, go into your AppData directory and clean out all the Temp files in there. Delete them for all user accounts on the machine:

C:\Users\YOU\AppData\Local\Temp for example.

Just noticed when I was about to upgrade one of my applications by starting to uninstall the current version that it wasn't no longer in the list of installed programs and lots of other programs are gone too.

Did some Google searching for this problem and noticed I was far from the only one who experienced this issue but unfortunately I wasn't able to find any real solution.

My Windows version is 1511 build 10586.420. I already tried running sfc /scannow and it came out with no errors found.

Any ideas what happened and how to fix it?

Answer:Lots of programs are missing from the Programs & Features list

Programs or Apps? I ask because Apps from the App store don't show up in Programs and features. They are in Settings > System > Apps & Features. What is the name of this software?

EDIT: I'm noticing some items in that list I wouldn't have called Apps? Some of my Steam Games, NVidia drivers for audio and video? My guess is eventually they will all show up in Apps & features.

Hi guys, hope you can help me with this please because I don?t really know what to do to solve it.

I have a Vaio running Windows 8.1. but coming with Windows 8 preinstalled. I have recently noticed that most of the programs and apps (Adobe, Realtek, Sony folder, Intel, Avast, Java, Bluetooth?) on Programs and Features (Uninstall a Program) have vanished without knowing how. Only Microsoft apps are displayed there for some reason.

First, I run sfc /scannow and found some corrupted files that could not be fixed, so I decided to perform a full recovery (through Vaio Care that makes use of the Recovery partition) that restores the system to factory settings. After recovery, all programs and apps were in Programs and Features as expected. However, after removing either the preinstalled version of MS Office 2013 or the preinstalled games, most programs and apps disappeared again. I run again sfc /scannow, Avast and Malwarebytes and they found no issues at all. I also tried System Restore, but it did not fix anything. Only MS Office 2013, Avast and Malwarebytes are currently installed on the drive, along with Windows automatic updates (including Windows 8.1), and I have not used any ?cleaner? or ?optimizer? tools.

I found a potential cause for this. Apparently, the uninstaller for a program can incorrectly remove registry entries that are used by Windows and the Add/Remove Programs tool (Add/Remove Programs tool displays installed programs incorrectly), but I am not sure whether... Read more

After receiving a false message concerning hard drive failure I found a program titled, "Windows XP Restore" in my start menu and also that most of the programs were no longer available from the start menu. I followed the procedure in the "Remove Windows Recovery" guide, including RKill, Malwarebytes, and Unhide. After Unhide the folders reappearedin the start menu, but they were either empty or programs were missing. Subsequently I found the "Remove Windows Restore" guide and followed the same procedure again. Hi,
I wonder if someone can help me. I posted on the microsoft support pages but nobody could help me and directed me here.

A few weeks back i accidentally downloaded a program that wasn't from a reliable source, which in turn downloaded a bunch of junk on my computer. It was stupid of me, i'm usually really careful!
I managed to get in and remove most of them, but then all of a sudden all but a few of my programs completely disappeared from Programs and features. Flash Player, Google Chrome, Firefox and a few other programs were the only ones hat remained. The major programs that were missing from the list are still working fine from what i can see, but i didn't get the chance to remove a few items of adware and they are still active on my computer and being as irritating as an STI (i'd imagine...)
On searching online how to remove these parasites, most of the sites suggest uninstalling from Programs and Features, which i can't do because they aren't on the list! All other suggestions have not worked!
I have tried going into safe mode (with and without networking) and setting up another user profile with admin but the list stays the same.
I can't remember the last time i backed up (Months ago i presume)
This morning i did a scan on cmd (sfc /scan ??) and came back saying "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations"
I have tried various tools to try moving the adware: YAC, Cloud System Booster, (i've uninstalled some others i've used so can't remembe... Read more

Hi,

Recently my mom visited a website that tricked her. She downloaded and installed some stuff she didn't need. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff she installed.

Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features is not showing all installed programs. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letter M. 14 programs are listed. See picture. Start Menu -> All Programs -> I suspect some programs are missing. I have a Win 7 style Start menu because I am using IObit's Start Menu 8 program. Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools was empty. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.

I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date, but that didn't work. In the process of trying to do that I discovered that BitDefender Internet Security 2014 doesn't get along with Windows 8.1's System Restore feature. I uninstalled BitDefender and successfully went back to an earlier date but still had the same problems with missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues: missing programs in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu.

Hello, I repair computers and lately I saw a few computers, all running on Windows 7, with missing programs in "Programs and Features" :The programs that are missing in "Programs and Features" could be viewed in the Uninstall function of CCleaner :To clean the computers, and get rid of all the crapware installed, I used Combofix, AdwCleaner and did a full scan with Kaspersky. When I saw that the missing programs didn't reappear, I did a "sfc /scannow", used Tweaking Windows Repair and did, in last resort, a Windows repair using a Windows 7 DVD and choosing "Upgrade" :The programs didn't reappear even after all of this.I know that programs can disappear in "Programs and Features" if the DisplayName value, in the registry, is more then 64 characters long :HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UninstallThe thing is that the entries of the installed programs missing in "Programs and Features" are not in the above paths. How can CCleaner see those programs ?Do you have any ideas ?Thanks,m0t

I've been on Windows 8 for a couple of months now and have installed a fair amount of programs which previously, as you'd expect, appeared on the Programs and Features list. However, as of yesterday, there are only about 10 programs in the list and I can find specific examples which I can run from the start menu or desktop that do not appear there.

This happened around a similar time to accidentally installing an application called 'TornTV', which a quick google revealed comes with all kinds of adware/spyware. I have since removed this program and run a full virus scan (Norton 360) which found nothing. I am wondering whether it could be related to this but whatever the cause, is there any way I can get the programs back in the list without having to reinstall them all?

Hi,

I've having a constant problem trying to uninstall programs. As soon as I open Programs and Features from the Control Panel, Windows Explorer becomes unresponsive. This happens consistently.

OS is Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2.

My anti-virus avast picked up a false positive today from full system scan, from a game I play (More specifically Monster Hunter Online CH and my computer is free of viruses). So then I realized I don't really play that game anymore. So I went ahead and uninstalled it from my list today, then I deleted the false positive. Including the folder that the game left behind in my external drive. To my surprise, after doing so, when I wanted to uninstall other games I wanted, A HUGE TON of my programs literally disappear! Only 28 programs list! So maybe I thought it was a bug, and went to CCleaner. To my surprise, even then SOME programs are missing there as well! More programs pop up in CCleaner, but still missing! I tried restarting, turning off, reconnecting my drive, and still no alas, everything is missing... So then I decided to do the regular fixes with Regedit, looking for my missing programs through the uninstall thingy path recommended by Microsoft. AND my surprise again, EVERYTHING is missing except Microsoft updates and graphic drivers! and no file is listed with more than 63 characters! Can anyone help out?

Edit: Also decided to run SFC scan, and it found no violations.

Just when I thought I had computers figured out, after having built several from guides on this website and troubleshooted many problems with other guides, I have run into a problem that I'm sure has an embarrassingly obvious solution.

I am trying to uninstall winamp, and naturally I attempted Control Panel - Programs and Features - Winamp - uninstall, the normal method of uninstalling programs. But winamp is simply not listed there, and every guide at winamp's site or a google search starts with that method and offers no others. I know winamp is still there because it still opens and runs and associates every file with it.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

I just want to uninstall winamp.

thanks, Charlie

What I use is the familiar Control Panel. I put Control in the Search box and click the resultant Control Panel item. Once it is open I right-click its icon on the Taskbar and choose Pin to Taskbar, always there for me to make a choice. I use it nearly every day.

I have a Dell laptop running Vista sp2. I have a program named ''Better Brain'' in programs and features. I don't remember seeing it before and wonder if I should uninstall it. See, I was trying to update my free CCleaner, which I've done easy enough in the past. I don't know what happened, must have clicked the wrong thing, but suddenly my Avast pops up that it has quarantined something. At the same time something else has downloaded. I go straight to programs and features and uninstall 2 things that began with V. Plus I see PC Optimizer is newly there, so I uninstall it. I ran malware and virus checks--everthing good. But I can't find anything about better brain. Any input appreciated.marber

The way to update CCleaner is through CCleaner's GUI....sounds like you used another website that hosted CCleaner software
and....of course...installed a bunch of crapware.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here
Double-click mbam-setup-2.X.X.XXXX.exe to install the application (X's are the current version number).
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
Once MBAM opens, when it says Your databases are out of date, click the Fix Now button.
Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box for Scan for rootkits.
Click the Scan tab at the top of the program window, select Threat Scan and click the Scan Now button.
If you receive a message that updates are available, click the Update Now button (the update will be downloaded, installed, and the scan will start).
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
If potential threats are detected, ensure that Quarantine is selected as the Action for all the listed items, and click the Apply Actions button.
While still on the Scan tab, click the link for View detailed log, and in the window that opens click the Export button, select Text file (*.txt), and save the log to your Desktop.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can also be viewed by clicking the History tab and then selecting Application Logs.

Some genius from Microsoft Office 365 support did something in my control panel having to do with mail setup and user accounts to try and fix my Office 365 install. <dident work BTW I found the solution on my own>

After he did this almost every time I open Programs And Features to see what's installed and when the screen is missing some of the data. The program names are there, and the size for most of them, which I know some programs in there just don't show a size correctly. But the major item missing that is driving me nuts is the install date is missing for every program in there.

Sometimes it will appear when I open Programs and Features but for the life of me I can't think of what random element is occuring that is making the install dates reappear. I have tried everything I can think of but there really isn't much info on the web about this happening to people, let alone what could be causing it.

Any ideas to get this data back and get it to stay would be welcome. I am attaching a screenshot of what my window looks like right now.

Thank You

Hi All,

I installed windows 10 around 1 month ago, and last week when I logged into my computer, ALL my files, programs etc. where missing.

I managed to find them deep in the C:, users, name, Microsoft etc under recent items and put them all back into the correct folders.

I come into work this Monday and ALL of the documents, files etc. had disappeared again. I located them in the same folder but this time it would not let me open the files saying (this short cut refers to has been changed or moved so this short cut will no longer work properly) and all the files and documents I had created the week before had disappeared and not even in this folder.

Also, I had uninstalled programs the week before and they where re installed onto my computer.

There is no available dates for the computer to set back too.

Answer:Missing Programs, Features and documents.

Hi George,

note that it would be ideal to stop using that harddisk. Every writing access to that disc will reduce chances of recovery, should your files have been deleted. If I should guess, from what you write, I fear your files might have been deleted by Windows.

For the removed programs, which suddenly are back again, I cannot explain that. It is possible to produce such kind of situation by doing a system restore. However, a system restore does not happen all by itself. Apart from that a system restore would keep user files ontouched - at least as long as they are kept at appropriate locations.

The Recent Items folder normally does not contain actual files, but it only contains shortcuts pointing to your files. Are there still some of the broken shortcuts in that folder? When you look at these shortcuts, please do a right click on some of them, then for each select "Properties", "Shortcut" and then have a look at the field "Target". Like so: http://cdn9.howtogeek.com/wp-content...2/sshot271.png

What does it tell you in these fields?

Hi all
When I looked in Programs and Features I have this program: CCC Help Turkish
It doesn't have an unistall option.
I can't seem to find what it is used for. It doesn't even have a date when it was installed. I have looked on google but it doesn't seem to shed any light on what it can be. What is it and should I deleted it (if so how?!!)
Thanks

Answer:Weird program in programs and features: CCC Help Turkish

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/why-are-ccc-help-programs-languages-installed/369ac76f-d65b-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?msgId=696a8256-075f-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5

If you have ATI/AMD onboard video or video card...the CCC installs with the drivers. On this system, it appears on Add/Remove Programs as ATI Catalyst Control Center.

When the program installed, someone must have opted to have additional language packs installed.

I would just delete it, it's nonessential if you don't use Turkish. You can delete it just like any other folder...go to Explorer view, scroll down to Program Files/ATI...see if it's there.

The fact that it appears listed...doesn't mean that it's really currently installed...that can happen.

"How to Quickly Uninstall Programs From the Context Menu In Windows
I love to try out new things on my computer and thus I end up installing lot of applications. While some come in handy, many turn out to be crappy and hog system resources. These unnecessary applications need to be uninstalled as soon as possible to free up resources. There are a number of tricks to uninstall a program in Windows. But none are as quick as the one we are going to discuss today.
What is Menu Uninstaller
Menu Uninstaller is a freeware for Windows that helps you to uninstall any undesired application in the quickest way possible. Once you spot a shortcut to the program you wish to uninstall, you can get it done directly from the right click context menu, thus bypassing the tedious (and conventional) way. Lets see how to do it." Download. Via.

I started on Turbo Tax '08 then had problems with a trojan virus. After the repair, Turbo Tax was gone. I found where I had saved the files, but the files wouldn't open.

I was going to start my taxes from the beginning. I attempted to install Turbo Tax again from the original disk, but got a message that Turbo Tax was already installed. It further said to go to Programs & Features to delete the program, then insert the disk to install.

I went to Programs & Features and cannot find Turbo Tax in the installed programs. Turbo Tax is still showing up in c:/program files. I deleted those files, but the Turbo Tax disk is still saying that I need to uninstall the program before I can reinstall it. What am I missing here? Is there any way to uninstall a program that is not showing up in "Programs & Features?" My OS is Vista.

Found a lot of other posts all over the internet, suggesting malware scans, SFC/Scannow, even chkdsk
But none of these people got their issue resolved, and all ended up reinstalling the OS.

My programs work fine, but they are not listed in Control Panel/ Programs and features

I can even uninstall them by manually browsing to c:\program files\<name of software>\uninst000.exe (or whatever the name of the uninstaller is)
Then after uninstalling the above way, if I reinstall the same software again, the name of the software shows up in my Control Panel/ Programs and features.
I have about 200 programs installed, and Control Panel/ Programs and features lists only 98 now (it was listing even less, but I got a few back after manually uninstalling/ reinstalling, don't have the patience to reinstall all the 200+ programs I have).

Short of performing a factory reset (F11 at startup and then launch HP Complete Recovery, or booting up from the recovery disks I created when I got the computer), is there something that can be done to fix this issue??

The computer I'm using is HP Envy K204TX (touchscreen version), and it's running Windows 8.1 Home (64 bit).
If you need the entire configuration (CPU, RAM, etc) ask me, not posting cause I don't think this matters.
My OS was pre-installed on the computer when I purchased it, and I've never ran a "registry optimizer" application.

I can system restore, but I have no idea when the problem started. Arbitra... Read more

Answer:Programs and Features missing installed date column

Hi Xirw If you right-click on the columns, you should have a context menu displaying various column names and whether they are enabled (checked) or not (not checked). Just check the "Installed date" in that menu and the column will appear.

I'm running Windows 7 and a few months back had to remove Snap.do and some other unwanted programs.  I managed to get them off, I beleive.  I'm not sure, but I beleive I had to delete some folders to get them off fully. Subsequent Superantispyware runs did not report any unwanted programs.
This morning Avast alerted me Snap.do was back.  I opened a browser and confirmed the home page was hijacked.  Avast said it could remove it for me and when I looked, the home page was back and Snap.do wasn't on my list of programs in control panel>prorams and features.

I have Windows 7 Prof x64.

My question is, when displaing all software installed and choosing more columns of information to display, they don't stay. For example, choosing Location column. Getting out of the installed programs list and then returning to it, the Location column is gone.

Is there some what to get the columns to be persistent?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Question about Windows 7 Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features

The Programs and Features listing is shown to you by the Explorer app. Each time that you open/close the Windows (file) Explorer while viewing a folder (or a special view/list like the Programs and Features listing), Explorer tries to write info to the registry about how Explorer was showing you that folder. Windows (file) Explorer tries to write this "how to display a folder" info at other times besides just closing an Explorer window, but I'll not go into all of that.

Microsoft has not solved the problem that happens when these places in the registry get too big. When this happens, you may see the problem that you are experiencing - that of no longer being able to store the layout/view/column width/column selection/... info in the registry.

Below is video that I made showing registry keys being made. (I'm not suggesting that you mess with the registry.) Notice that new keys are made when visiting the folder named Temp. Deleting this Temp folder does not remove those registry keys. If you close Windows (file) Explorer while viewing a compressed folder (a ZIP file), the Explorer app tries to make keys so that it can remember how it last showed you that folder. If you delete or move that ZIP folder to another location, the original registry keys remain. So you can see how this area of the registry can fill up.

edit: I had to make this video again. I hope that I covered all of the original points.

One solution is to remove all of the entries/keys in the areas of ... Read more

(the main uninstall menu located in the control panel for windows) Not sure how to fix this, it's letting me assume a main windows registry key is corrupt, also I've been getting IQRL not less or equal BSODs about every few days but only if the computer is idle for a while. Programs that only seem to show up are the ones that were re-install recently or had a big update, like a game. If anyone needs system info ill be glad to post.

this is a huge pain for trying to deal with a BSOD since I cant uninstall anything that might be causing the bluescreen, like a bad driver. (you might say oh just go to the program directory and manually do it, problem with that is there's a lot of stuff that I've tried that on and either they don't provide a uninstaller there or it simply doesn't work.

Just noticed that most of the programs have vanished in programs and features (control panel). I have around 90 installed programs. The ones that have vanished still work from the quick launch bar but they have also disappeared from the start menu. Have tried a system restore to the only restore point that was available but it didn't change anything.
The programs that are there are in alphabetical order from Mi to Mo
I updated filezilla yesterday and that reappeared in the programs and features list.

Answer:Most programs vanished from programs and features in contr

Hi Trevor,

Recently I noticed the same problem on a Windows 8.1 Samsung laptop when I was trying to remove some junk programs that came from the Internet. The only programs listed in the laptop's Programs and Features menu have names that start with Mi or Mo. Plus, some programs are missing from the Start -> All Programs menu. Microsoft's System Restore didn't help me. Check if Administrative Tools is empty on your computer, too. It was empty on the laptop I am working on. I fixed that by opening a command prompt as Administrator and using the command SFC /SCANNOW. That didn't bring back the missing programs in Programs and Features but that fixed the missing shortcuts in Administrative Tools and may have fixed a couple other issues I didn't know about.

Any ideas on how to rectify this, please?

Answer:Some installed Programs not listed in Programs and Features...

Some programs do not really "Install" by using normal installation process by writing entries in the Registry and so don't show up as uninstallable. "Portable programs" are an example. If they don't have Uninstall.exe (or similar file) in it's folder, you can just delete folder and shortcut.

So I'm trying to uninstall some stuff, and Programs and Features from Control Panel is mostly blank. It seems to think that on my 500gb hard drive, which only has 50gb free space, that I only have 22 programs, occupying a space of half a gb. But there's a twist: this goes deeper than Windows being crappy, because Revo Uninstaller Pro says the exact same thing. So yeah....you might have gathered from the above info that I need to uninstall some things...

- Version of the OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x86
- If the OS produces an error: no error
- Were there recent crashes that could have caused this problem?: no
- Did you install new software recently? If this is the case: Which software? (Brand, version, build): Yes, lots....don't remember it all and can't check for obvious reasons.
- Did you do any of the following:
- Run a scan with an updated anti-virus program?
- Run a scan with an updated anti-Trojan program?
- Run a scan with an updated root kit detection program? (This only for Windows NT, W2K and newer!)
- Run anti-spyware scans with at least two freshly updated anti-spyware programs? (If so, which ones?): I have nod32 (legit)...'nuff said.

Hi there. I installed a game on my Windows XP computer, and while installing the program, the computer hang up. I waited couple of minutes but the computer still hang up. I rebooted the computer. After rebooting, i finished the installation process.
When I decided to remove the game that I installed, I can't find it on the Add/Remove program on the control panel. It is not listed there. The CD that I used in installing the program doesn't have an Uninstall file to be use to removed the program.
Please help. I really wanted to remove this game because it consumes a lot of space.

I hope someone can help me.

Answer:How to uninstall a program that can't be found on Add/Remove programs

Hello Smallville1985

You could try reinstalling the program into the same folder, then uninstall through Add/Remove Programs.

If it will not reinstall, try using the Windows installer cleanup utility to remove the install/uninstall information for that program from the registry. Then reinstall and uninstall from add/remove should work.

Windows installer clean up utility:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;290301

Be sure to read the instructions carefully. ONLY remove the entries for that program
Then delete the folders for it on the hard drive

If that does not work
a) Start/All Programs
Find program (if it is there) and hover mouse over the name. If you are lucky a menu will pop out with an uninstall option in it
b) Search in C:\Programs for program. Open the folder and search for an uninstaller. It will usually start with "un*****". You will have to search in subfolders too.

I'm not sure whether this is in fact an XP problem, and am slightly worried it may languish fairly much unseen when it might be a more widespread problem, but here goes:

A program of mine has vanished from Add & Remove Programs since a couple of days ago.  Its files are still there in the Program Files folder, and when I attempted a reinstall I got an error message saying that there was already one instance active on the system and that I'd need to uninstall that and restart before I could reinstall.  Yet no sign of it in A&RP any longer, and my uninstaller programs can't see it to uninstall it!  If I go through the Start > All Programs command and try and uninstall it that way, I get the error message I referred to, and can't uninstall.

Does anyone know if there's a way I can force A&RP to recognise it, or do you have any suggestions as to how I can uninstall, please?

It is an XP/SP3 computer, admittedly, although as I said above I'm not sure how relevant that is.  The software is a program controlling a mobile broadband dongle.

Answer:Program not showing up in Add & Remove Programs - can I uninstall?

Microsoft has a program that will attempt to fix this but it's only for Windows 7 and later. Microsoft used to have a tool called Installer Cleanup Utility but is now unsupported because of problems with Office. It is still available here. Run the program and look for your software. Only check highlight the software you are attempting to install, Reboot and see if you can reinstall then uninstall. If you do not see your program close out the program.

Several of my program titles in the "all programs" menu have vanished. The programs are still on the pc - listed in windows explorer - and if I double click on the respective exe file, the program will open and run normally, but they are no longer on the menu. These are programs that I don't use every day (i.e. MS Autoroute) but I have approx ten to twenty missing.Anyone any ideas please?

Answer:All programs menu - several missing

If you right click the start button and select explore all users, the windows explorer opens. In the left hand pane select programmes - are these shortcuts now visible in the right hand pane?

Hi, I have something listed as "Connect" in Programs and Features that will not uninstall. I tried looking for it in the uninstall parts of the registry for 64bit, but it does not appear to be listed, I tried the Microsoft Cleanup utility and also CCleaner.

The item is not selectable in Programs and Features and has no entry in any of its columns other than the Name column. The only program that seems to be able to recognize it is CCleaner but using "Delete Entry" returns the message "Cannot delete MSI Installer".

I have no idea what the application is, I'm guessing its part of some installer, it could be iTunes related as I un-installed iTunes today after it crashed my PC repeatedly.

Hello Jazzeh and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.Having no programs or a partial listing in the Add/Remove list is a common problem with XP. Hello to all,
I had a problem getting a ,msi program to install for as yet unknown reasons having to due with it not having the previous version completely uninstalled. I was advised I could extract/unpack the files to a directory and just run the executable. Unable to accomplish this successfully, again for unknown reasons, a member of the Raw Therapee Open Source Software forum kindly unpacked the files into a directory and I downloaded it and cut and pasted it into the Program Files (x86). I pinned the executable to my taskbar in my user account. Is there a way to get the program and folder into the All Program group in the Startup Menu? As always thanks for any assistance!

In trying to uninstall SKYPE so I can download an upgrade, I find that there are only 1/3 of previously installed programs listed under Uninstall in Control Panel.
SKYPE is not one listed and has been installed on this computer for years.

Answer:Uninstall in Control Panel has missing programs

How can I completely uninstall and then reinstall Skype for Windows desktop?Alternatively, you can use a third-party utility like Revo Uninstaller Free or Portable and follow these instructions for using it. Revo provides a listing of all installed software by installation date and when removing a program, Revo does a more comprehensive job of searching for and removing related registry entries, files and folders. If a program is not listed in Programs and Features (Add/Remove Programs) or you receive any error messages about missing files, look for an uninstall icon (shortcut) from within its program group. Click on Start > All Programs (or Program Files), look for the program folder by name and use the program's uninstaller. If it's not there, the next step would be to open Window's Explorer, manually navigate to the program's folder itself, look for an uninstaller file (i.e. uninstall.exe) and double-click on it to run.

Uninstall option in "ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS" is missing??

I did a search in this great forum but didn't find a problem like this so here we go....

When I go to Control Panel, ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS and the list of programs show up..... the Add / Uninstall option ain't there for any of them. I've never seen that before. Ever since I installed Windows Live Messenger 8.1 BETA, my computer has been crashing... screen goes black so I have to reboot but that's another problem. So, I can't uninstall any programs at all. Matter of fact, Windows Live Messenger 8.1 BETA doesn't even list at all in the ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS list; WTF?
I installed "Total Uninstall" but from what I see, that program will not uninstall existing programs.

Any suggestions anybody?

Thanks in advance.

Try Kelly's Korner.Remove Add or Remove Restrictions - #208 on the right. As this is a registry edit you should backup the registy first.

Hello!

This is my first post here (other than my intro) so bear with me!
I am using Windows XP and many of my programs will not uninstall.

When I try to run the unstallation, I get the following error mssg:

The file unins000-0.bin the file is missing from the intallation directory. Please correct the problem or obtain a new copy of the program.

I have not installed anything new as of late and I have not removed any files either, especially any .bin files.
I have checked several of the programs' folders, and they all still have an uninstall.exe file, but not the one listed above (is it supposed to be there?).

As this is happening for several of my programs, I am really hoping that obtaining another copy of the program for all of them is not the only option.

I have tried using Add/Remove programs, safe mode, and running the uninstall.exe directly from each folder.
I am aware that I could try to just remove the folder through explorer, but I would rather use an uninstaller to remove as much as possible as my hard drive is running low on space and I need to free up as much as possible.

I am not too too "tech" saavy but I am a pretty quick learner...I think LoL
I thank you in advance for your help!

Update:
I'm sorry am I not including some info that I should have, or....?
I'm noticing everyone else who has posted after me has gotten replies as I have not....just curious as I am a complete n00b LoL

Hi,

Yesterday I'd spent a couple hours going through my family's PC and clearing up a few documents, as well as (foolishly) playing around with some settings.
Problem is, now I've lost a few minor applications from my Start Menu > All Programs list.

The ones I've noticed so far have been: Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Notepad, Paint, Volume Control and various basic games (solitaire, pinball etc.) I've managed to fix the first 3, but the other problems remain. I know that Paint, Volume Control and those games are still on the computer, as I have found them when I've done a search. Problem is I'm not sure how to put them back in the all programs listing.

I really need a simple and quick way of solving this. As I've said, this is the family PC.

How can I get all my programs into these two locations?

Hello Richchad, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You will need to reinstall the program instead. Copying over the files for the program like that will usually never work.

Hi everyone,

I recently followed procedures for removal a rogue Windows 7 Recovery malware application on my Windows 7 Home Premium system.

After the successful removal of the malware, my Start Menu Programs are all missing (basically nothing in there) and 95% of all my icons (on the desktop, within Win Explorer) are all grayed-out. (They still work but are gray).

I have a feeling it could be a corrupted user profile, but I'm not sure.

So far, I've restarted twice, right-clicked the start button to make sure default settings are set, ran a CMD prompt with SFC /SCANNOW

Nothing has worked yet, any ideas, next steps?

Thanks in advance

Answer:start menu... missing programs...

HI

What you could do and both are longish tasks is to either....

Open up your Program Files folder and find the .exe file for running each of the applications and dragging them to your start menu, this will create shortcuts ( may have to rename most though to their proper names )

or right click your Start button and choose Properties > on classic menu click customise and then click Add and then browse for the applications in the Program files folder.

or re-install or do a repair* of the software, which will add the start menu shortcuts back, installing the application over the top of itself, generally will allow many of your customised settings in many apps to remain ok.*if available.... MS Office is one such application, so open say Word and click Help > Detect and Repair ( some office versions are different )

I recently had some malware troubles (Antivirus 2008 XP, and some Trojans.) I'm pretty sure that I got everything cleaned out using a combo of Windows Malware Removal, Bitdefender and Malwarebytes.

The trouble now is that my C drive and DVD drive don't show up when I go to My Computer. They are both in the Device Manager and if I type in C: in Windows Explorer, it will be there, but the drive icons aren't there in My Computer. Also the Programs menu on my Start Menu has disappeared.

Also, when I go to the Windows Update website and try to update it continually says that there is a problem and can't continue. It doesn't tell me what the problem is, it just points me towards the FAQs. Even so, every time I shut down the computer it seems to be installing updates.

I have already cleaned up the malware cookies that the ActiveScan found, but still have the problems.

Any ideas?

I am rebuilding a gateway laptop, starting from the D recovery disk (it was running very slow, much faster now). While rebuilding, one software app needed to get to SP2 to install (Adobe), which I did. After the install, I went to remove a program, and almost none of the installed programs in Add/Remove programs have the Uninstall buttons on them.

Found a link to this question, and looked like it was common back in 2007.
http://www.techsupportforum.com/f10/...ow-164689.html
Searched, cant find a newer fix.

A much more techy friend recommended installing the rest of the Win XP updates (SP3, security, etc = have installed them all), and running Eusing Registry cleaner - all finished fine, still NO uninstall buttons.

Please help, I dont want to have to restart the rebuild process! Surely Microsoft must have found a patch for this over the past 3 years???

When this first happened. AVG detected a thread. I moved it to the vault. Then weird stuff started happening. "My Computer" and many other start menu options were turned off (i fixed it in properties) Also registry editing and the task manager was "disabled by administrator". (i fixed this too)."

There was "VIRUS ALERT!" on the right side of my windows clock (I fixed this) but it stills shows next to time stamps like in AVG. Internet Explorer always pops up and wants to take me to download an anti virus thing. But I always close it. The virus obviously wants me to download something from their affiliates so they can make money.

Windows automatic update is disabled and I can't enable it again. It won't let me.

"All Programs" in the start menu is missing. Disk C is also missing in "My Computer". I can still get to disk C in "run" though.

When I first got this virus, there was popups always alerting me that I was under attack and trying to get me to download some anti virus software. I went into safe mode and used "smitfraudfix". Although it didnt work on everything obviously.

Here is my main.txt log:

Hi guys

I'm not too sure when this problem actuall started - maybe a few months ago, but it's starting to become a real issue.

Whenever I try to uninstall a program through control panel>programs>uninstall a program my system reboots the moment I click on "uninstall a program".

I have searched around the net a bit and haven't found the exact problem, but have worked through a couple of soloutions to similar problems with no luck.

I have already tried to turn off "automatically restart" on system failure through system properties, only to find it was already set to "write an event to the system log".

I have not made any changes to the system (that I know off) while trying to fix this problem.

The reason this is becoming an issue is that I'm having major troubles with the latest version (7.0 and above) of roboform password manager clashing with internet explorer. Whether the 2 issues are linked is well beyound my knowledge level

Hi Reece12sky,

When you're in the Programs and Features window, and you can see all the installed programs, look at the top right of the list. You should see a little white question mark in a blue circle. to the left of that is a the icon listing drop down menu. Click on the down arrow and select "Details" from the list.

This should do it for you. If not, please let me know.

this is my drama and dihlema ! ! !

last week i ghosted 15 windows xp machines. i used 2 user accounts from two different OUs(managers and users), to test and see if everything is working fine(start menus, map drives, printers bla bla bla and so on) and there was no problem at all ! !

a manager brought to my attention, that she could access the "all programs" in the start menu, i therefore re-tested all the machines with the user accounts again and realised that the users can access everything with no problem at all but the managers could not access the all programs folder.

my assumption was "restrictions", that could be placed in group policy but i did not touch group policy because there was no reason to touch it. i did have a check and everthing seemed fine to me ! ! !

i created a new OU and transfered all the accounts to the new one but still the samething ! ! !

im speechless as too how this happened. if anyone has a solution, please help out a fellow tech ! ! ! !

Hi everyone

It has been a long time since I have been here, but I am having a new problem.

I have been using a pc that I have that I have rarely ever used for online things. I downloaded a demo of Kaspersky Internet Security 2011, and I had to get rid of Norton Antivirus that came with my computer. After I installed Kaspersky I downloaded and ran Spybot Search and Destroy.

After restarting my computer, I noticed that my Start menu only has a few programs in it. All of the programs are still on the PC, as I can run the desktop shortcuts and open files just fine, but my start menu shortcuts are missing.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks in advance

I startted a topic in http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic455712.html last night and was asked to create a new topic here after i created a couple of logs.

from the topic i started last night:

I am working on a friends business laptop where there is/was a virus on the system. (S.M.A.R.T Data Recovery virus which has been removed).
Windows 7 Home Edition Premiunm edition 64 bit, Microsoft Security Essentials.

The laptop is still having an issue where Accessories are not present in the start menu, when you go to a users directory and click on some of the folders it says i do not have permission to access it. some of the programs in the start menu say they are empty. when you first boot up and get into windows the pop up appears saying that the Catalyst control center has stopped work it will close after a few seconds, then reopen and close and then you do not see if after that.

I performed the following on his laptop all in Safe Mode with Networking:
Installed and ran new versions of Malwarebytes, Sypbot Search and Destroy and Glary Utilites. These programs detected and cleaned Malware/spyware software.
Ran Microsoft Security Essentials ---- Full Scan and it did come back with Trojan win32/fakesysdef and it removed it,

I had posted this issue on another forum and they had me download, install and run
ATF
OTL
Ran the Microsoft Saftey Scanner and both the full and quick scans and on the full scan it found and cleaned a coupel of items (I don't remember w... Read more

Hello,

I have an issue with the Windows 7 Start Menu where all the program shortcuts are missing. When you click on Start on the lower left, then
All Programs, it usually shows a complete list of all the installed programs. But Mine has suddenly gone blank. Now there's no programs showing. Is there is any way to restore it? Thanks.

Answer:Windows 7 Start Menu All Programs Missing

OK, here is something else you can check.

Press the WINKEY+R.

In the Run dialog box, type regedit.exe and press OK.

This will open the Registry Editor.

Navigate down to the following key.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
With Advanced selected, look in the right side pane for a Value named 'StartMenuInit'.

This value should show a number ending in '3'.

If it has any other number, double click this value.

In the 'Value Data' box, change the number to 3.

Click OK.

If the 'StartMenuInit' value does not exist, create the value.

Right click and empty area in the right side pane and select,

New/DWORD (32bit) Value.

Name the new value StartMenuInit (Case sensitive)

Double click this new value.

Type the number 3 in the Value Data box.

Click OK.

Exit the registry editor and reboot the computer.

And by the way have you used and os cleaner like ccleaner recently. This might be the cause of this issue. And if you have system restore you can try that as well.

Hello!

The shortcuts in my All Programs are all missing. I don't know what happen because I was just playing a game (Kitchen Empire) the whole time before it happen.

So, I look around the internet for the solution of my problem and I came across this: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/159034-start-menu-restore-missing-default-shortcuts.html. This help me put back the default shortcuts.

I was wondering if there is an option where I could really restore the old shortcuts without loosing any files that I have now.

I'm using Vista Home Premium.

Answer:Missing Shortcuts at Start Menu>All Programs

I don't see anywhere that says it will delete your existing files, just that it restores the missing ones.
I could be wrong so don't quote me on it but I think if you follow the steps it will simply add the lost ones to your list.

Hi,

I recently downloaded and started using Spybot. Now, whenever I update any program on my computer, it flashes up boxes asking me if I want to accept or deny a particular change. So far, I've always accepted all changes.

Yesterday, Windows did an automatic update. Before I restarted the computer, I was working on in Word, and an "accept or deny change" box flashed up. Unfortunately, I was not looking at the screen at the time, and I didn't realize that I was clicking "deny". The box disappeared just as I noticed it, so I'm not sure what it was asking. I only caught a glimpse that it was something to do with the start menu.

Well, sure enough, I must have denied something important, because now when I click "all programs" in the start menu, I'm missing most of my icons. Instead of the nearly 100 that I should have, there's only 20, seemingly random icons. The other programs still seem to be there, and can be accesses by going into the program files of my computer.

Is there any way I can get the menu back the way it was? And can I disable that pop-up system in Spybot so it doesn't happen again?

I'm running Windows XP and I have a high speed wireless connection.

Thanks,
Angie

Answer:All Programs Menu Is Suddenly Missing Most Of My Icons

Not sure, but I think that's the Teatimer function in Spybot

First of all I'd like to say a big Hello to everyone as this is my first post here. I've had a quick look around and this looks like a great forum... can't believe I've not come accross this until now. :)

So, my problem is with the start menu in Windows 7 x64. There are no recently used programs displayed on the far left column it's just a blank white space.

I've done some searching and most solutions advise me to right click the start menu and look in the Properties--> Customise menu and check the 'Number of recent programs to display' has a number in the box to the right and then I should see the list populate in the start menu.

This however is not the case, the number is the default (10) but nothing shows up in the start menu. I've also attempted to 'Use Default Settings' but to no avail...

If some bright spark knows what I'm doing wrong I'd love to hear from you.

Many thanks,

Mike

Answer:Missing recent programs in start menu

You can restore the Start menu to its original, default settings.
Right click the Task Bar and choose Properties
Click the Start Menu tab, and then click Customize.
In the Customize Start Menu dialog box, click Use Default Settings, click OK, and then click OK again.

Symptoms: Desktop icons are all hidden (except recycle bin). Start menu programs totally missing. When Chrome is started, the computer shows a blue screen (says physical memory dump, etc) and restarts. IE used to redirect me, and played hidden advertisements (audio only), but it seems like anti-virus corrected this. There may be other problems, but I didn't want to fool around and screw things up more.

I would have ran unhide.exe but I wanted to check to see what these logs meant first. I am running on 32-bit Windows 7.

In safe mode, I first ran Avast (updated), then Malwarebytes (updated), then DDS, then GMER. See logs below.
