Preferred Solution: Volume slider going from 100 to a random number when i try to change the volume

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Volume slider going from 100 to a random number when i try to change the volume

Maybe your mouse is configured to be really sensitive... You can change this in the Control Panel.

On my newly purchased Pro A200/PSAE7 the (hardware) volume control - front side, right from speaker plug - turns endless and when using it the volume does not change "smooth" - more "abrupt". Because of this there is no "fine tuning" possible.

Q: Does somebody else has the same hardware side (endless turn) and software side (no smooth volume change) situation?

Many thanks for any reply in advance!

Best regards,

Answer:Sat Pro A200/PSAE7 - Volume Control turns endless, no smooth volume change

"problem" of abrupt volume change when turning volume control disappeared. I am not sure if this is based on disable "TDispVol.exe" as start-up service or another reason.

Thanks Jimi to the support in <a href="" target="_newWindow" class="jive-link-external">this</a> thread I have fixed the problem :)

But I have another question/problem. The icon of the speaker regulator doesn?t pop up on my display when I regulate the volume.

Can you help me there too?

I hope you understand me :)

Answer:Satellite A200:Volume icon don't pop up on display when I change the volume

Sorry but who says that volume regulator should pop up? This regulator will pop up just if you click on small volume symbol placed in task bar.
Moving volume control dial nothing will be shown, just the small icon will be changed and show one, two or three small lines depending on volume level.

Whenever I press the volume Up or Down key on my keyboard, the slider pops up on my desktop from the System Tray (even if I hide the Volume icon). This is a little bit annoying because if I'm watching a movie in full screen, the volume bar steals the focus and reverts the film to window mode.

How can I disable the slider bar?

Answer:Volume slider pops up in XP

You can disable the loudspeaker icon by going to control panel->sound and audio devices and unchecking the 'place the volume icon...' option on the first page. Not sure if it'll get rid of the slider though.

my volume slider keeps going up and i can't lower it

Answer:volume control slider

First try using System Restore -- choose a date which precedes when the problem first started:Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System RestoreIf that doesn't fix it, the sound driver may be corrupt so try re-installing that driver. If it's a laptop or a brand-name PC, you must download the driver only from your laptop or PC maker's website (unless you already have it saved somewhere).

I keep on setting the midi slider to the top in the volume control, but as soon as it plays a sound the slider keeps on resetting itself to the middle of the slider switch.I have tried removing the sound drivers and reinstalling them but the same problem keeps on appearing all the time.

Answer:Midi slider in volume

MIDI data contains a volume control of its own; doesn't have to be used but when it is it adjusts the overall volume of the track itself (and the volume slider), does it happen on all tracks?

I have the normal speaker icon on my screens bottom-right (taskbar ?), and it works just fine.

However, I would like to have a simple volume slider that would reside all the time, without the need for opening it up each time, on the desktop permanently.

All I want to do is adjust the volume; no mixing, etc.

Anyone suggest a free, simple, one ?

Or, is there perhaps a simple way to tell the one that I already have to reside on the desktop permanently, and stay open ?

Much thanks,

I'm using a HP Pavilion zv5000.
The volume up button makes the volume go to mute. I don't know whats going on and the volume slider won't stay up. :confused

Answer:Volume slider won't stay up. Please help! Thanks!

Double-check that you're pressing the correct buttons. The first button from the corner is volume-down, the next is volume-up and the next is volume mute.

Does pressing the volume-up button really put it into mute? If so, you might have a driver problem or something, though it sounds more like crossed wires!

Open the volume slider tray application and watch what happens in it when you press the buttons. Or check the same in the Sounds and Audio Devices controls in Control Panel.

Are you running an application that has volume controls in it, like MediaPlayer or the videos on youtube? If the controls in the applications are set low, that will be reflected in the system's controls. I usually set the application controls to maximum volume and I control the system volume with the hardware buttons.

Let us know what you found out.

Answer:volume slider moves down

I'd be willing to bet this is a software conflict issue, wrong forum, but anyway...
It sounds like some other program has control of your audio levels and is setting it back to a previous level, perhaps a default level not yet established. An example of this is when I use 'Muse' for playback of MP3 files, the intigral slider also controls my master(Windows) .wav slider. But if I am using 'Windows Media Player',it's control does nothing to the master sliders.
What other audio/media software do you use for playback?

HiThe volume control slide in my task bar used to play a beep coresponding to the volume, loud beep when loud, soft beep when low, no beep when off etc.something has changed and now all i get is a single ding, no change in the volume of the ding wherever i set the volume. the old sound made it easy to set the correct volume, not so now. only way is to play a tune to see what the volume is (yes, i can see the slider so it isnt so bad).anyone know how to get the default settings back, i have looked at control panel/sound, i do not have any themes active, just windows default.i am using winXP Pro, ASrock mobo with onboard sound. Nothing has changed hardware wise but i have been installing some demos so it could be one of them. Is there a way to restore defaults before i try system restore. Thanks all

Answer:Volume Slider beep has changed

You need to go into control panel,Sounds Speech and Audio devices, then click on change the sound scheme and look down the list the sound is probably the "Default beep" sound you will need to highlight this click the play button to see if this is the sound you here if it is you can browse your windows media folder and find the sound you used to have and put it back to that.

Answer:Volume slider moves down automatic

Consider that when you change the volume level in some 3rd-party (non-M$) programs, that action changes the operating system's volume levels, i.e.: "the slider". Unfortunate, but fact. This may hold true in your case. Not all 3rd-party programs exhibit that behavior, so one has to identify which ones do.

So I have an annoying little issue. I'm running win 8 pro (not 8.1 yet) and sumtimes when I boot up the Win 8 environment volume slider isn't there (it's like it failed to load or the logitech controllers overtook it). I'm running a desktop non touch screen pc.
My mouse is a logitech G500 and I have configured the +/- DPI buttons to instead be volume up and down. I also have a Logitech keyboard with +/- volume.

Now when the problem arises I notice that the mouse is unable to adjust volume, and the win 8 volume slider fails to pop up (and show the changes as you apply, ie goes up and down depending on which button you press). When it's working this little slider appears, when it doesn't work there is no slider.
Curiously the same with the keyboard volume EXCEPT that the keyboard does succeed with the adjustments but instead of seeing the win 8 environment slider I'm treated to the dedicated logitech slider appearing momentarily.

basically it's annoying as I prefer to adjust volume with mouse and that's when it doesn't work at all.

I might reboot and sometimes it works and the win 8 slider is there, and other times it's not there.

I'm thinking I need to close and restart a process, might be simpler way than reboot but don't know which task/process to close and rerun.

I'm guessing that on boot ups sometimes logitech beats win 8 to the finish line or vice versa and that's why sometimes its there other times not.

Any ideas?

I have a Compaq Presario R3050us laptop with XP SP2 and all current Microsoft Updates and alll of Compaq's latest drivers.

My problem is that the Volume for the sound stays at 0. When I try to adjust it by moving the volume control slider up, it returns to zero as soon as I set it. If I keep the mouse pointer in position, over the slider, I can hold the volume slider to a position so that i can hear the sounds being played but as soon as i release the mouse button, the slider returns to zero.

The sound driver is SoundMax and I have uninstalled and re-installed it to try to correct this problem. I have also re-installed service pack 2 and all of the media players ( WMP, QT, RealPlayer and Itunes) that i have to no avail.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Answer:Volume Slider automatically reduces to zero

The only thing I can think of is that you have another program running that has it's volume set at 0 and when you change the volume, the program changes it back. I wonder if the SoundMax CPanel is doing this. Try adjusting the volume via the soundmax cpanel. Also, check your running programs.

Hi, I am running Windows XP Home on my PC and have two user accounts. When I change user to the "administrator" account and go into "Open Volume Control" (icon in tray at lower right), it opens up the "Volume Control" screen with 5 different settings. The second one, "Wave," keeps going all the way down to the bottom, even though I keep pushing it all the way back up to the top. This causes a problem for me while I work (signed in as the other user) since I am a medical transcriptionist and need that volume to hear my dictators!

I have tried shutting down the PC after changing the setting in the hopes that it would "save" it to no avail. I have tried creating a new user account with "administrative" powers and saving it there to no avail. (I Googled this problem and came across a forum post about this, and that was the suggestion under the theory that the "administrative" user account had been corrupted somehow.)

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated before I snatch myself bald! (Pulling my hair out.)

Answer:XP Volume Slider Controls Losing Changes...

Are you also running a 3rd party audio software (like SoundMax, RealTek, etc...).

Maybe they are working at cross-purposes, one is undoing the changes of another.

Has it always been like this, or is this something new ?

Any idea on what might have caused this ? A new hardware device, perhaps ?

I have a usb headset, it's running on the generic windows 7 USB audio drivers and it plays audio and records from the mic just fine. The only problem is, no matter where my volume slider is in the system tray they play at full volume.

What this means is I have to adjust the volume inside each application in order to not go deaf. Windows sounds are still terribly loud, and programs where I CAN'T adjust volume are a nightmare.

They are A4Tech HD-800 headphones and they're supposed to run on the C-Media CM112 drivers, but they aren't 7 compatible.

Any help is appreciated!

Okay, this is my first post and I'm going to try to keep it as simple as I possibly can. Don't ask how or why I found this out but I have discovered that all the volume sliders available to my old Soundblaster PCI128 soundcard do not have a "Capture" slider. This includes both "playback" and "record" sets.

I noticed this fact when trialling Camtasia Studio. Within Camtasia options I selected my soundcard as the device to use, but I noticed that when I clicked the handy "Volume" slider within Camtasia a single slider appeared and its cource was not my soundcard but my Phillips Toucam webbcam. I have tried and tried to get this "Capture" slider to be part of my normal soundblaster set but I have failed.

I'm not going to add that I also have no sound coming out of my speakers at all despite nothing being on mute, card is in the right slot, speakers are on and power is working. Not going to tell you that yet. I'll just sort my first problem out if I can. Besides, I think it's related.

Er, that's it..Oh, AMD Athlon Processor, 785 RAM, Windows2000.

I've been using this computer- it's an HP Pavilion G series laptop- for about six months now, and have noticed no issues. During that time, I've been using a Logitech ClearChat Comfort headset. I recently broke a pair and today I received a new pair. After using them, I have suddenly encountered a very strange problem. My volume on these headphones continually goes down- by which I mean the volume setting on the headphones, both in the "playback" tab under Sounds in the control panel and in the Windows Mixer, drops continually without my touching it. Dragging the slider up or pressing the "volume up" buttons on my headphones or keyboard causes the volume to rise, but it then falls back down to zero again; the "mute" buttons both on my keyboard and in the windows mixer do not work doing these periods*.

I have already tried the suggested solutions on other fora- I have already set my "communications" setting to "Do nothing", I don't have RealTek audio manager, and I have already tried rebooting.

I must note that this problem did not pop up until about eight hours after I first plugged in the headset; during that time, I watched a number of YouTube videos and made a video call without any incident. Furthermore, I have used this brand of headphone for several months without ever having a problem. However, it does seem to be connected, as I cannot reproduce the issue without having the headphones plugged in, whereas it has ... Read more

slightly odd thing has occurred on my Win7 64bit install that has been stable for years. Obviously an update or install has done some damage but I am having trouble tracking down which one.

When I click the standard windows taskbar volume notification to see what the current volume is set or change it using the slider I get a small window appear in the right location about the right size but completely black in contents, and clicking on it does nothing.

If I use the Realtek HD notification manager icon it works. I can live with it but something has gone wrong.

Recent history

I did have to do a debug on my windows IE which was crashing when any page loaded that had any FLASH content, I removed flash and all returned to normal, BUT, it was about this time that I noticed some odd things the volume being one of them, the other is that my STEAM client no longer plays video content (possible using the FLASH engine).

Help / Advice needed please.

Answer:No volume slider in task bar when clicked - just black

Try a refresh. It should correct any Windows/Sound corruptions.

Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the RealTek entry in the sound and then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound.

This is the deal;

When I record things with Fraps the audio is really awkward. It sounds like the bass has been turned upp a trillion times. The thing is that I've searched this forum and others for a solution, and I've tried several of them. None seems to be working.

The thing is that I need to lower the volume of my stereo mix setting to make this work with fraps apparently. However the problem is that I can't change it. The setting is there, but I just can't change the volume. The slider isn't even greyed out, it just won't budge.

I've also seen that this appears to be a common problem with Realtek audio, as other people seems to have the same issue not being able to slide the volume, and I've even tried some sollutions fidgeting with the Realtek HD Audio Manager, like changing the frequency to a lower setting. No dice.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

I've got Win7 x64 on a lenovo G560, and I'm trying to record from an IE webcast using loop recorder.

The recording application has the ability to select a device from the mixer to record from, but when I raise the volume level of IE in the mixer, the volume level of the main speakers raises too.

In order to set the recording level correctly for the recording app, (around 80%), the speakers on my laptop are so loud it's annoying. You have to shout to be heard by anyone else in the room.

I realise that for desktop users with a separate amp (and hardware volume control) this might not be a problem, but for me it is, because my laptop uses the Win 7 mixer to set the speaker volume - no hardware control.

How do I un-link the master (speaker) volume from the others?

P.S. I have searched but have not found a solution.

this maybe a simple solution but have you considered plugging a set of headphones in?

for your information, no you cannot unlink the master volume because as soon as the slider for IE reaches its peak, then it raises the volume of the master slider, there is no way to override this, if it is too loud then i can only consider plugging in a set of headphones.

I used to have a volume bar in XP, but those drivers no longer work. I have no visual indicator of system volume. That's significant when viewing online media because the system may be maxed out, while the media player may not.

I'd absolutely love the Win7 sound slider to show up when I turn the knob on my keyboard, then go away a few second later. Is this an option somehow? Are there third-party utilities to do that?

My keyboard does that. You need the updated driver/software for your keyboard, I think.

Ever since February 2011, whenever I install windows updates, my volume slider in the tray stops working. Not only the slider but also the right click context menu.

I did some research into last month's (April 2011) round of updates and narrowed it down to being associated with Office 2007.

Then today, I tried for updates again and the same thing happened. BUT, I didn't choose any that had to do with Office 2007 at all.

This isn't a crucial situation. I really have no problem disabling updates all together. I just want to know WHY.

I've done everything imaginable, from un-/re-installing sound drivers, removing Office totally, uninstalling ALL 3rd party software, and even a clean install of Win 7 x64.

Here are my Specs:

Asus G50V Notebook
Windows 7 x64 (Version 6.1 Build 7601 SP1)
Office 2007 (Version 12.0.6550.5003) SP2 MSO (12.0.6545.5004)
Realtek HD Audio Driver 2.59 x64 (Version

If you need more info, just ask. I need to find out the why so I can move on with my useless Windows-based life. :J

Thanks guys!

Answer:Windows Updates Kill Volume Slider

I wonder whether this has something to do with the sound drivers actually,

Does the problem repeat using the default Windows ones? or is it specifically with the Realtek ones?

Problem: when i play songs or watch videos or do anything that deals with the sound, the wave slider in the volume control will automatically jump from the high volume that i set it at to mute.

I have checked out the properties and volume control properties and still can't find a way for it to stay un-mute.

My volume control is the SoundMax Digital Audio driver...
i checked the hardware and it says it working properly and i can hear the sounds but only for some time, before the wave volume automatically jumps to mute...

this is getting annoying....

Any one have a solution to keep my wave volume from muting it self permanently...

Please Respond ASAP

Answer:Windows Xp Volume Control With Wave Slider might try using the native XP volume icon, rather than Sound Max.

I have SM on my system but I don't bother to use, I see no advantage to using the XP volume control (I did try the Sound Max control for a period of time) and any program I use for music file playback will have it's own volume controls.

Could be possible file corruption...I might try uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers which load Sound Max (if I really wanted to use it).

One thing to remember about Device has no way (that I know of) to distinguish/inform the user...if a file is corrupt or not.

I'm attempting to record some video game footage for fun using Fraps but I have a serious problem with my headset.  I've disabled every audio input device except for my headset, which is a Logitech set (I don't know which.  I doesn't have a model number on it, but it's one of the fancier ones with the mute switch on the mic). My problem is that when I record the game, my voice is just completely out blasting the game and I can't get the game volume high enought to compete with it.  The Fraps sound is maxed.
I discovered the problem to be the fact that lowering the volume slider on the mic doesn't affect the volume input of the mic for some reason.  Even when I set the volume slider of the mic to 0, the mic still stays at the same volume.  When I test it on the device screen, it will indeed show no voice coming through.  None of the bars will light up on the bar scale, but when I go back into the game and start playing again, it will record my voice blasting over the game audio as if I hadn't even touched that volume slider.
All other recording devices on the computer are disabled so it's not a case of another device piggybacking off of this one.  Is there some other setting that I'm missing that makes the microphone ignore the volume slider?  I've been an electronic musician for years using my computer for audio recording and I've never seen an issue like this.  My only thought is that there's something in... I'm thinking of the Advanced tab properties of your default mic in this case. Have you tried toggling the boxes exclusive mode?

I'm not sure if this happened with 5.55, but with 5.56, when I hit the volume up or down on my keyboard to turn the sound down for everything, it turns down winamp's volume bar too. Sometimes I can move winamp's volume bar up and down and it won't even be working. What causes this? It's pretty annoying for the music to turn down twice as fast or winamp's volume bar to not even work at all.EDIT: Moved to a more appropriate forum

My volume button on my keyboard no longer controls the volume. The only way to turn down the volume is to turn it down from the application I am in. For example, if I'm listening to itunes, I turn it down using the volume control in itunes. Or if I'm in Youtube, I use the volume control in Youtube. When I use the volume button on my keyboard, it doesn't change unless its turned all the way down therefore muting it. But I want to go back to controlling the volume using the volume button on my keyboard. Help please!

Did it before? The Windows volume control doesn't affect any of my players volumes, so if I have Winamp open for example, adjusting the volume with the Windows mixer control doesn't move the Winamp slider, nor does it move the WMP slider, which is why I leave Windows volume at full, and adjust the volume from within what ever program I'm using to watch a film or play music.

Hi all..

Before I pull out every last strand of hair... someone smarter than me, please come forward.

Thanks to the good advice here and the scan results, it seems that my problems may not be malware-related (right now).

The issues that I have been having are a little strange.. and seem to be connected to sound and touchpad now.

Volume settings won't stay in "up" position and I have no system startup sound anymore. Touchpad first started giving me errors that the advanced features were disabled because another device was in use, when it wasn't.

Touchpad cursor started jumping all over the place - had to plug in a mouse to do anything. I uninstalled, then reinstalled the touchpad and it works fine until I reboot.

Something from the last few days has wiped out all my System Restore points. So whatever it is, or was, that caused these changes has me puzzled. I've been dealing with this for 3 days straight and I've tried just about everything.

This is an older HP Pavilion laptop..zv6000 with AMD Athlon 64 processor, XP OS. A few episodes of freezing have happened today as well..or just "sticking" in one place for a lonnnnnnnnnnnnng time.

Anyone who wishes to advise, I am ready to listen.

Answer:Volume Slider Won't Stay UP, Touchpad Settings Won't STAY

I would try to replace the CMOS battery with a new one, first. , appears to be standard CMOS battery, CR2032, available anywhere batteries are sold.

Win XP Home SP.3I'd like to know how the volume serial number is calculated/allocated during a format and whether the user can influence the calculation/allocation in any way. Thanks

Answer:Volume serial number calculation.

The serial number is a 32-bit number determined by the date and time on the current computer at the time of a disk's formatting. The low order 16-bit word is calculated by taking the month and day value and converting them to hexadecimal. The number of seconds and 100ths of seconds are also converted to hexadecimal and added to month & day value. The high order word is calculated by taking the hours & minutes value and converting them to hexadecimal. This is then added to the hexadecimal value of the year. Here is a diagram showing how the additions were done that resulted in a Volume Serial of 2514-1df4I suppose you could try to set your system date to produce the desired number, and do the format at just the right time to catch the 100ths of seconds, but there are lots of utilities out there to change a volume serial number. It involves direct disk editing, so I'd back up all your data first. Google for "Volume Serial Number Editor" for example. It is not possible to decode the volume serial number and verify the format date/time unless you have some of the information already.  If you know the year the disk was formatted, it is then possible to calculate the time. Calculating the date is a little more difficult as you need the exact seconds and 100ths of a second and vice versa. If you know the date, then it is possible to calculate the format time.

I just noticed that two of my hard drives (one is the boot drive, and both are internal SATA drives that are always running when Windows (Win7 64) is) have the same volume serial number. I'm talking about the 8 hex digits assigned by Windows when a primary partition is formatted as a drive, not the hardware serial number from the manufacturer. The two volumes are each the first primary partition of separate physical drives.

The odds of it happening by chance are miniscule, so I guess this must have happened when I imaged one to the other. That last happened over a year ago, and I haven't had any problems, so apparently it's not a fatal error. But still, it seems like if Windows can't tell my boot drive from my data drive, an accident is waiting to happen.

Should I try to fix this, or is the fact that they are on different physical drives mean that there is no way Windows can get confused?

CAN I fix this? I'm comfortable editing the registry, and I have a sector editor to edit data on the disk directly, but I can't find the serial number on the disk, plus I'm worried that I may break something if I change the serial of my data drive without going through Windows.

Also, how can I make sure this doesn't happen again when doing an image copy? I'm not sure whether this happened using Acronis or Paragon.

Any tips greatly appreciated.

Answer:Two drives with the same volume serial number
Please post a snip of your Disk Management window expanded to show all drives and partitions.
What is giving you the serial numbers?

So I have a Blue Yeti, and I'm an online animator/voice actor. Whenever I record audio on my Blue Yeti (OR any other mic) I record about 4-6 inches from the mic, and turn the gain down enough that the audio doesn't peak as I yell or whatever. This is what you're supposed to do if you don't want your audio levels peaking and making your recording sound horrible and corrupted. However, afterwards, it means I have really quite recordings. Not a problem right? Now that it's recorded right, I can boost the volume of the entire clip afterwards right? WRONG. I'm not an audio expert so I must be missing something. But why in GODS NAME would the audio distort and peak AFTER it's recorded successfully? It's all there, it's all clean audio. If I turn the volume on my speakers all the way up it sounds CRYSTAL CLEAR! All I want to do is do that INSIDE the computer so that when I upload it to youtube people don't have to turn their speakers so far up. But if I increase the clips volume in the computer, it distorts! It sounds awful! Why?! I tried in Sony Acid and Audacity and they both do the same thing! Why?! I seriously don't understand what I'm missing here! I can take sound effects, and recordings made by other producers and crank them up nice and loud, but mine just fall apart! If anyone understands audio stuff, please tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Answer:Soft Recording volume with Blue Yeti, increasing volume distorts audio

I have a home recording studio using Sonar X1 software.

I don't know about Acid, but it should allow clean recordings. Audacity the same way.

I record, generally, in the -10 level with my recording program, at 24 bits/44.1 Khz. At -10, I have plenty of headroom and can then adjust the levels after the recordings and at mixdown. I export the mix as a standard 16 bit/44.1Khz wav file and then "finalize" whatever I want to do to the song, including levels, with "Goldwave" (an audio editior).

I assume you are converting the audio to MP3? If that is the case, that may be where the distortion is occuring? I find that 128Kb MP3's are very poor and at a minimum use 198 Kb MP3's.

Hi all,

I have Toshiba Portege M800, and I have a problem with the volume wheel.
If I try to increase or decrease the volume by this volume wheel, it will change, but the volume not change linear.

For example, when I increase volume from 0 to something, volume is changed, during rolling, e.g. from 0-1-2-3-4-5-3-8-6 (thats just an example).

Why doesn't it change linear, e.g. 0-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 ?
Is it caused by software or it is hardware problem?

Could I claim the goods?

Answer:Portege M800 - volume wheel issue - volume level jumps

I have had a similar issue with the volume level on my Satellite notebook.
I tired everything; updated the BIOS, sound driver? I have also reinstalled my OS using the Roecvery disk but I didn?t notice any improvements.

Finally my ASP technician checked the volume wheel and cleaned the contacts and removed some dust.
This was the key?
The dirt affected the volume wheel functionality?

In my cases this helped but this does not mean that this will help you as well.
I think you should also update the BIOS and should check if you could update the sound driver.
If this will not help then it would be recommended to contact the ASP technician for opinion?

This on is quite perplexing to me. This is stemming from a volume problem that I had posted before. I have more detail and have narrowed down the problem but not the cause of such. When ever I click the volume control in winamp, not adjust necessarily, just click, my wave setting in my volume control (pannel that comes up by double clicking the speaker in the tray) drops. Of course this affects my overall volume. It is sparatic and does not drop the same amount two times in a row but will drop everytime I click volume in winamp. I am running winXP pro and have not installed so much as an update since the last time this was happening. The only thing I did change is I set up voice recognition in Office XP but I was having this problem before that. I have uninstalled and cleaned out all winamp files and reinstalled. Any suggestions? Winamp is the only player of any kind that this currently happens with.

Also, whenever I am using winamp to play an mp3 or streaming audio and I open another program, any program, or even just minimize/maximize a window, the audio starts cracking. This also has never happend before except of course when there is a heavy load on the system. As I said I am running XP pro, and FYI a Duron 900 cpu and 448MB RAM. As I am having these problems I am using 5% to 10% of my cpu and have 21000k physical memory availible according to task mgr.

So I installed some new Windows updates today (whatever was available via Windows Update). I restarted my computer to enable the updates. When it came back on, my task bar was white for some reason. I solved that problem using the first solution I found here: [SOLVED] Taskbar is white

Well I didn't change my volume before doing that, so I don't know if it worked before I followed that solution. I do know that after following that solution, my volume meter no longer shows up when I change the volume via the keys for it on my keyboard. This is pretty annoying because it was convenient to always see my audio level when I adjusted the volume.

I am on a HP Pavilion dv7-6c95dx with beats audio, running Windows 7 64-bit. When I changed my volume, the beats audio logo with a volume meter under it would pop up, but it no longer shows up. I haven't noticed any change in the quality of my sound, and I can still actually adjust the volume level. The problem is the volume meter no longer displays to show me the volume level.

If anyone has any clue as to why this happened, that would be great!

Answer:Volume meter no longer displays when I adjust volume level

Try rolling back any keyboard driver updates, or go to the keyboard manufacturers website and download most up to date driver(s) from there.

Here is a question I can't seem to find the answer to in the archives.

How can adjust the volume output from my Windows ME machine (with SoundMax Digital Audio) so that the volume of the background music I like to listen to (via RealOne Player version is quiet, but the other important sounds my PC makes (like email or calendar notifications) are loud enough so I can hear them?

I've seemingly tried all combinations of settings for the volume sliders/adjustments, including:

1) The volume knob on my speakers
2) The RealOne Player volume slider
3) The Windows volume control panel "Volume Control" slider
4) The WIndows volume control panel "PC Beep" slider

Even when the "PC Beep" volume slide is set to maximum, and the "Volume Control" slider is set near minimum in the Windows volume control panel, the PC beep is virtually inaudible when the background music is acceptably quiet (by adjusting the RealOne volume slider and/or the volume control on my speakers).

Am I doing something wrong? Is there some other way that I'm not thinking of to boost the volume of the system sounds my PC makes, while keeping the RealOne music volume low?

I have a problem with adjusting the volume. When I adjust the volume using the button on the left side of the laptop, I only can choose 3 "loudness levels":

No volume, very silent volume, and maximum volume (to loud).

Is this normal, doesn't anyone have problems with this?
I expect the problem is because of the digital volume adjuster. The adjuster doesn't register the exact position of the volume button. Every time when I get a phone call at work (I listen to internet radio), I turn off the radio using the adjuster on the side of the laptop. When I end the phone call, I always need to open the laptop and adjust the volume in the windows task bar, because when I use the volume adjuster on the left side of the laptop, it just immediately goes to maximum volume.

It?s very strange that your sound volume control contains only 3 volume levels?
I have noticed that Toshiba has released a new sound driver (v. on the European driver page.

So how about the sound driver update?
The sound driver controls definitely the sound volume and in my opinion it?s a worth a try.

Windows XP Home
RealPlayer 10.5

Ok, I used to have RealPlayer and all it's junk till I wised up
and removed it from my system over a year ago.

However, I recently installed the basic RealPlayer (that is...only allowing
the features that I needed for video/audio) in order to watch NASA TV
e.g. DEEP IMPACT and today's DISCOVERY launch.

My question is regarding why, when I mute or adjust the volume on
the RealPlayer, that it also does the same to the computer's Volume
Control (Speaker Icon in System Tray...Wave setting).

I had been viewing on the RealPlayer, muted the sound and then later
was wondering why I was not able to hear any of my videos, music, etc.
The thought occurred to me to check the Speaker Icon and, sure enough,
there was a check at Wave>>Mute.

Is there a setting I can check/uncheck that will allow RealPlayer and
Computer volume to be independent of one another?

Thank you,

My Windows 7 was installed in Drive C: in Primary partition.

I only have another drive D:, which is also a Primary partition and 200GB in size.

I need to create another drive. So, I use 'Shrink Volume' on Drive D: and free 30GB.

Then 30GB become free space and when I right click on that, I choose to 'Simple Volume' and then format it as NTFS and assign the drive letter E:. All of a sudden after I did that, all the partitions(C: and D now no longer say "Primary Partition". The blue color on top of the partitions also changed to a yellow/brownish color. My guess is that they have been converted to a Simple Volume too.

Well, then I just restart my PC and astonished that my windows 7 can't load. Only a blank screen come ahead to me. No error message given.

I use my Windows 7 DVD and in repair windows section, I use command line and by 'diskpart', i found, my all partition (C: and D: and E present their and there file system is: 'NTFS' and Type is "Simple". No drive there marked as a 'System' or 'boot'.

What should I do now, to recover my Windows 7?

Any kind of help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi guys! Just got my Lenovo Ideapad Z370 and very happy with the looks and performance, but one thing is really annoying me since I got it.The touch buttons above F9-F12 keys never worked. Since the first time I turned on the notebook they just lie there, completely off, with no lights and no function at all.I tried to reinstall the drivers, the onekey theatre soft and a bunch of suggested drivers in this forums and still have no clue how to fix it. Someone can help me?Thanks,Gui

Answer:Touch buttons (mute, volume down, volume up, onekey theatre, star and moon) doesn't work in Z370

usually upgrading graphic card causes this. have you updated the drivers? have you tried to re-install power management?

ok so this problem was just about from the beginning. i thought i would be patient and it would go away. at first i noticed that while using msn messenger, its volume control for voice chat controled the main volume for the whole pc. so if it was low things wouldnt sound as high as i wanted. no matter if i adjusted the main volume in the control panel, which was always set to highest, the volume would still be at the mercy of Msn M. so if it was lower than usual i would have to sign into msn m and adjust it. not only does this happen with msn m. it also happens with web video applications used by youtube, livevideo, etc etc! those arent usually the culprit of low sound. its usually just msn m. even now with live messenger i have the issue. im tired of being patient so here i am

windows xp sp2
2gig ram.
anything else? sound card? the sound card came with the mobo. its a Realtek AC'97.
thanks for any help.

Before I upgraded to Vista, there use to be a green bar at the bottom of the screen, so whenever you increased/decreased the volume, you would know.

This has disappeared.

Anyone know where a copy of this "OnScreen Display' Tool can be found?

Have an external USB hard drive caddy with a naked Raptor drive sitting in it which has one partition that is the entire capacity of the Raptor drive...this is an 'active' volume.
1. Can someone tell me if I delete the volume under Computer Management>Disk Management>Delete Volume will this return it to being an 'inactive' volume?
2. Also can you tell me after deletion will I need to initialise the drive in the usual way like when one installs a new drive in a PC?
3. Upon reboot will Windows just offer to initialise it within Disk Management?

I want it to just be a simple, basic, single partition drive just for data backup. In past it was my OS drive which is when it was made an active volume. Using W7/64bit professional.

Hi everyone,I had the hard drive replaced recently in my G580 (Windows7) and everything is perfect except this one thing. I use the Volume: FN/down and FN/up a lot. It's very awkward that I can't see the volume setting any more. I know I can use the volume control in the tray but that is too slow to use in a live muic situation.btw the Fn/brightness also works but doesn't show the settings. Is this a setting that has gone awry that I can easily change?I've seen posts about the FN not working at all but nothing about it owrking but just not being visible. Thanks for any help.

I have an HP f2105 21" monitor running on Windows 7 x64. Recently the Volume Icon keeps appearing on my screen, and automatically increases the volume to 100%. I have not made any significant changes in my operating system. The Icon stands in front of all other screens and cannot be dismissed. It quits when it's ready after a few seconds. It pops up every 3-4 minutes or so. My drivers are up to date. I've tried disconnecting the monitor and reconnecting it. Turning it off and on, etc. So far nothing has helped.

Hello melb1946Does your keyboard have volume buttons? I know in my experiences I have sometimes run into similar scenarios. In my case the problem was accidentally hitting the volume button on my keyboard. How is your sound setup in Windows 7? Is your monitor set as the default sound device? Do other sound devices increase their volumes?Probably one of the best ways to isolate the problem would be to put the monitor on another computer and see if the sound continues to appear and go up.

Answer:Headphone and speaker volume problem. Volume is not memorized.

Are you sure this is standard behaviour? This is the first time I hear Windows adjusting the volume depending on what you plug in.

For some reason the onscreen display for the volume controls and screen brightness on my W530 stop working after coming back from sleep or resume. I updated Power Management, Hotkey and Interface but the problem still rears its ugly head. If I go into screen resolution and advanced and on screen then uncheck Enable onscreen and recheck it...the controls work again.

I year ago i was trying to save power. I was having issues with my cpu overheating. I went somewhere in my pc, i forgot where and in an effort to lower power consumption, i combined sounds in the volume mixer. The cpu issue has been solved. Now i want to
open 3 web pages that all use sound and i want to be able to have 3 different volume levels for each. I've forgotten where I went to to combine the volume levels. That what i want to know: where to go, in windows,k where i can un-combine the volume levels.
thanks much.

Okay so I went to hop on my desktop today, it wasn't waking up when I move mouse etc, which was odd because it was on. So I restarted it and I've had two options for windows 10 for a while now volume 1 and 4 I don't know why, I've always used 1 but now when I click 1 it just goes to black screen, monitor is awake cause my light turns blue when it is, I pressed windows key with something I forgot what button while in black screen and sound was coming through. So I restated again and went on volume 4 and that worked fine out dated stuff since I haven't used it but it was working. I would like to get back on my main volume, or at least know what the issue is.

i did a Nvidia graphic card update a day or two ago as well.
i also tried to go to the troubleshoot screen when you open windows 10 which worked fine, but when I clicked restore to a previous time-black screen- and then I tried removing everything completely clicked that option -black screen-
Thanks for help ahead of time!!

Answer:Windows 10 black screen on volume 1(main) and not Volume 4(old)

UPDATE: so I went into volume 4 and attempted a complete wipe again, once I clicked it screen went black for a while and no sign it was working, so now I put in my windows XP disk and am going to attempt a clean install of that, then just upgrade to windows 10.

On Windows XP with Conexant Audio Driver the volume control setting inside the SMARTaudio maps setting 10 to 1 or 2 for the windows volume control/OSD(i.e. quite loud), thus the volume set to bar 4-5 is already deafing.  Does anyone know how to fix this?

I have a truecrypt encrypted volume which is my entire hard drive.  This contains the windows OS and my files(one of many backed up encrypted copies).  I would now like to implement a 2nd truecrypt volume inside this present truecrypt volume.  Truecrypt calls this a hidden volume.  The idea is that at boot-up, you can use one of two passwords.  The one you choose dictates which (the primary or the hidden) volume.  The easy way to do this is to do it when first creating both truecrypt volumes but I did not realize I wanted to create this hidden volume until now.  All of the instructions I have seen require you to dismount the encrypted volume which will host the hidden volume first.  However I can't do that because I need that volume decrypted in order to run the truecrypt software which performs the function.
Any ideas other than decrypting the encrypted volume and starting from scratch?

Question: Volume ID Change?

Hey guys, after long time I am back with another question.

How can I change my [system]VolumeID, because I got banned from something and that was a hardware ban, I try changing mac but it was something different and most of the guys say it's the volume ID.
So I downloaded 3 different programs to change the Volume ID, they all came out exactly as written in the tutorials and still my ID isn't changing.
Is it because of windows 7 or maybe because of my pc's makers (or however you call them) ACER?
I tried download it from a microsoft page and it came up good in command propt nothing will work.
Can someone please tell me a good tutorial that really will work or give me solutions?
by the way I have windows 7 home premium 64 bit, acer, intel7 proccesor and NTFS hard drives.

Answer:Volume ID Change?

Try Hard Disk Serial Number Changer. It is Freeware and worked very well for me. Save the .exe file and Run as Administrator. Hope that helps !
