Windows update installing same updates over and over.

Question: Windows update installing same updates over and over.

Hi forum. I'm hoping somebody can help with my pc issues. I have a toshiba sattelite running Windows 7 sp1 64 bit. For the last couple of weeks Ive had issues with updates not installing and now installing successfully but then installing again. One of the updates is IE 11 which fails to load but I have anyway running. I have tried lots of stuff like Fix it and microsofts hotfix and the latest thing was the repair thing from Tweaking.com all to no avail. My system appears clean as I have done lots of scans with all the recommended stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Jay

Preferred Solution: Windows update installing same updates over and over.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Windows updates keeps installing/reinstalling the same update over and over again. I looked in my update history and it shows that they are installed successfully every time. What should I do and is this using space on my laptop by re-installing over and over again?

Answer:Solved: Windows updates keeps installing/re-installing the same update over and over

It is not using any space. Right-click the ones you already have and hide them so they don't come back.

Hi

I updated my Windows and it said I had some updates that needed to be downloaded and installed. I went ahead and downloaded and installed them and was asked to restart my PC. When I restarted my PC, it said

"Preparing To Configure Windows. Please Do Not Turn Off Your Computer"

I waited for over an hour now and decided that something was wrong. I decided to restart my PC and everything was fine. Windows update didn't find any new updates so I checked my installed update history. It shows that those updates that I was suppose to install didn't install. The status for those updates show up as "Cancelled".

I was curious to know how do I download those specific updates (Security updates) and install them on my PC?

Both updates keep installing after successful installing over the last two weeks +. No errors. Ran scannow, no errors. Ran command prompt. fsutil resource setautoreset true %systemdrive%\ and it didn't do anything either. Have uninstalled several times, but it keeps coming back. Ran Fix PC or whatever the Microsoft troubleshooter is and it didn't do anything either. ?

Answer:windows update installing same updates repeatedly

Here's what is possibly the cause of your problem...

Code:
Checking Package Watchlist
(f) CBS Registry Error 0x00000002 Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageDetect Failed to open store key
Checking Component Watchlist
Checking Packages
Checking Component Store
Summary:
Seconds executed: 1287
Found 1 errors
CBS Registry Error Total count: 1
This error usually indicates corruption in the registry - and could be the thin end of the wedge.

I would suggest checking your RAM with Memtest86+, using the instructions here... RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Run at least 3 passes - ANY error is one too many!

post back with your results, and I'll see what I can do.

Hi,
I am having a problem with Windows 10 Updates not installing. The last update that was successfully installed was KB3074680 on 17/2/17. Everything since then has failed to install. Can anyone help as I do not have a lot of Windows 10 experience.
Thanks
Keith

Answer:Windows Update Has Stopped Installing Updates

Hi, first check your disk.
Download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) (assuming you have some sort of conventional disk with SMART parameters). Post the result.

Then check the file system
From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.

Then post a screenshot of Disk Management (Windows key + X, click Disk Management).

Is there sufficient free space on C: ?

From an admin command prompt run
SFC /scannow
This will take some time.
Report the result on the screen.
If this fails, stop here.

Have you tried doing updates with all unnecessary peripherals disconnected?

Try the Windows update troubleshooter. (Bottom rt)

So I did a fresh install of Windows 7 (again), and I shut it down last night and it started installing some updates. 211? I thought it wouldn't take too long. Usually when I have installed all the updates for a fresh install it took no more than 3 hours. But 11??? This is pretty insane. Since I woke up which is about 1 hour ago, it has been stuck on update 177 of 211. I suspect this update has been causing the system to be updating all night because when I last checked before going to sleep last night at 10:30, it was at update 118 or so. My question is why is it taking so long and when will it be finished? Also, is there a way to interrupt this without corrupting the hard drive?

The specs of the machine are as follows:
Intel Core i5-4440 3.1 GHz
8 GB Kingston HyperX Fury RAM (DDR3-1600)
EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti SC
1 TB 7200 RPM Seagate Barracuda

EDIT: I shouldn't say Windows Update, it is supposed to be updating then shutting down.

Hello,

My windows update has not been downloading/installing anything for a few weeks now, and is always using about 25 percent of my CPU. I just did a SCF scan and here are the results. It did say something was corrupt.

Here is the Log

https://www.dropbox.com/s/8j7lt40rcbebvm4/CBS.zip?dl=0
EDIT: I no longer have a problem. I was doing a bunch of things and then finally noticed that shutdown button had that little symbol that said it would install updates. I guess the reason why my WU download was always at 0kb was because the files were all there.

No more problems, however the scan still said something was corrupt, i would really appreciate it if someone looked through and see what i'm missing.

I upgraded to 7 from Vista, using an original manufacturer disk. It was not a clean install, I installed on top of Vista.

Works fine and I started installing about 200 updates in series of 5-10. Went great until one failed.

It is KB3075220 and error code is 800F0902

I attach a printscreen.

What can I do to fix this?

Answer:Installing 200 updates after upgrade to Windows 7 -first failed update

Hi Johnny,
That error code is not really a problem.
That KB has been superceeded, but not yet recognised by your system, it may clear itself after a reboot if not you can hide it and carry on updating the rest.

So I built up a new system a few days ago, clean install of Win 7 Pro 64-bit on a new SSD.

Then I ran Windows update. Got something like 134 updates the first time I ran it. I figured that this was a big catchup, but I was wrong. I keep running Update and it keeps finding "new" updates. Thing is, many of them are from 2011.

Why didn't Windows install every single outstanding update the first time I ran it.

Any way to identify outstanding updates and force them to be installed?

Answer:Windows 7 update installing updates from 2011, after being run repeatedly

Because some updates are incremental and require others to be installed first.

One thing you can do is slipstream Service Pack 1 into your install disc. This will take care of a lot of the updates.

Using Windows 7 x64. For several months now I have been hiding windows updates related to IE 9 cumulative security updates. Windows Update would hang during the installation; the progress bar would get stuck at around 50% and I'd eventually have to reboot the machine. The machine would boot and try to continue the update, which would also hang. I'd have to power off the machine and when it restarted, it would roll back the failed update. Sometimes in the course of doing this my machine would end up with Aero turned off and I'd have to get that re-enabled, or restore from a restore point. All other Windows updates work fine. I tried all sorts of things to get past this, from running FixIt for Windows Update to uninstalling IE 9 (so that I could try to install it cleanly; no luck, this too hung) without success. So I finally hid the update.

Since, then however, more IE 9 security updates have appeared and from time to time I try to install them with the same results: hang, reboot, hide the update. Last night I tried installing the IE 10 preview, figuring it would supersede IE 9 and I'd be rid of the issue. No soap; IE 10 wouldn't install.

I'm at the point where this has gone beyond annoying and I'm starting to worry about not having these security updates. I always keep my machine updated religiously via Windows Update and have never seen such an issue before.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hey guys,

Tonight i built and set up the aforementioned Nuc pc and installed windows 7. However some of the drivers arent installing like the integrated hd 5500 graphics driver and the engine management one. These 2 pop up in my windows update as "important updates" but i get failed messages when i try and install them.

Thank you,

Answer:Intel NUC5i3RYH, Windows 7 Update not installing important updates

I regard Windows Update as a last resort for installing drivers, and suggest installing the drivers supplied by Intel for the board:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/83257/Intel-NUC-Kit-NUC5i3RYH

If you have had driver installs fail, it may be necessary to boot into Safe Mode and delete failed installations from Device Manager and install again if you continue to have installs fail.

I have 3 Updates I've been trying to install for a while, however they seem to keep failing. I've never had any issues previously with Windows Update, and I keep the computer relatively clean. I've tried a few troubleshooting steps ( Such as running my Registry Cleaner, Fix-its from Microsoft )

I am getting the Error 80070643. I ran the Fix-it from the Microsoft Website - Windows Update error 80070643 and the Microsoft Office Source Engine Service is already running.
I also went here, and ran the Fix-it which resets Windows Update, In Aggressive Mode - How do I reset Windows Update components?

Ran Windows Update again, Same error.

I’m running Windows Seven x64 Home Premium, I have not made any recent changes to my computer.

Either the Updates are bugged, or there's something else going on here. I'm going to try installing them from the Administrator Account - I am going to try in Normal Mode and In Safe Mode With Networking and post back the results. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be very grateful. Thanks

I've honestly never really had an issue with Updates. This is very odd.

**I tried Windows Update on Administrator with no success. I also tried to run it in Safe Mode, but it would not open.**

I'm going out - I will be back later.

Hello,

I have Windows 7, SP1, with Windows Update configured to:

"Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"

I am now unable to work on my computer when first setting Windows Update to download updates.

This is because once Windows Update has installed updates, a Windows Update screen showing a "Restart" button flashes on to the screen but then without any input from me, the computer reboots, losing me all my personal work that was in progress.

When I say "without any input from me", I mean that I do NOT click any reboot button.

This issue seems to have occurred for the first time, following the installation of Security Update
KB3185319, but of course I do not know if it really is connected with that.

I would appreciate a solution to this issue.

Thank you.

Hello All,

This is yet another issue with Windows Update on 7; I recently (a couple of weeks or so ago) upgraded my father's computer to Windows 7 and he loves it.

However, whenever either of us try and use Windows Update, it sits there for hours and hours on "Installing Updates 1 of 2."

Does anybody have any ideas where I could look as to why this is happening?

I will post more information on this when I can find more detailed account of what's going on with 7.
Thanks,
- Robert

Answer:Windows Update on 7 stalls while "Installing Updates (2/3)" on AMD64 m

you could try :-

go to services (click start and type SER

stop windows update service

go to c:/windows/software distribution/data store

empty this folder

restart/start windows update service

open windows update and it should be red indicating never searched for updates
then try again

also check installed programs and make sure what your trying to install hasn't already automatically installed when you first installed Windows 7

just an idea

Why is Windows 7 doing the BIG HAUL? usually it only does 10 or so then restart, 10 or so more, etc. etc. etc. when a new install comes in. but Windows is doing 173 ALL AT ONCE!!! it has been a half an hour and it's only on 15 of 173!!!

Every time I shut down, Windows Update installs the same 2 updates. It never gives an error message saying that the install failed... it just insists on doing it again. This is the update from last week, I guess. I'm afraid I'm at work and away from the affected computer.

It's not critical, it's just annoying, bc shutdown now takes too long.

I'm betting it's an easy enough fix, but I don't know 7 well enough to start guessing.

Hi,

To give you some back story, I built my computer the end of August 2012. Ran Smoothly. I decided to get a 60 gig SSD to be the partition that stored Windows. I didnt have much stored on the Main HD so I deleted my original 2TB HD and tried installing on the SSD... found that the SSD was bad and sent it back. Decided just to stick with the 2TB HD. Had some issues installing windows back onto the HD as it would just hang up. Finally managed to get windows installed, had some "Not genuine" issues but that resolved after multiple restarts. That brings me to where I am at today and I feel as though the system has been getting worse. I would normally be fine with just a clean install but with all the issues I had with that initially I am very skeptical of trying it again. I have 5 important updates and 7 optional updates all of which do not install. The Installer just sits on Downloading updates and I have left it overnight with still no result. I am not sure if this is even my main issue but I am beyond the point of figuring it out myself so any help would be appreciated

I downloaded the System Readiness Tool and it Ran. I tried running the sfc /scannow in Admin cmd prompt mode and get a "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" I attached my CBS file. Any help you could give or guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Windows Updates Not Installing : Error Unknown (Sits on Installing)

Hello and welcome Faticus just as matter of interest why did you give up on the SSD? was not it under warranty?

That is heck of a drive to be installing on mate just how did you prepare it for the install?

You can run a chkdsk in Windows too > My Computer > right click on the drive > Properties > Tools > Check now - then follow the points in my pic.
You then reboot and it will start a chkdsk (in DOS).

I have a legal copy of XP which has been registered. There are 92 updates that will not install. I isolated KB892130 as the validation tool that will not validate with Microsoft before the other updates can be installed. I have turned off Avast (antivirus), but did not disable it. I have a laptop with Avast on it which has updated perfectly. I have forced validation from DOS but this still doesn't let the updates go ahead.
Any ideas?

Answer:Solved: XP update KB892130 will not validate and stops updates installing

I manually updated each one of the 97, (by now), updates with a shutdown inbetween each one...phew... took 6 hours but it is now updating. So the forced validation from DOS did work after all.

I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

Answer:Windows update stuck at Checking for updates and can't install updates manually

Now it doesn't even give the error anymore. It just sits there and fake-installing .Net Framework.

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... This girl on our floor is getting all of the symptoms of the good ole blaster worm and it's 1 minute to reboot issues. I figured I could just windows update until I fix it.
So I install the updates. They install fine, no errors, and windows update says they're installed. Reboot, the same updates are listed. Try once again, and again it says the same ones are listed after I reboot. So I try through automatic updates, and, once again, the same thing. The updates just aren't installing besides saying that they are installed.
I then download the stand-alone blaster worm patch. Run it, and right after I click "I Agree" and hit next, the window just closes, no errors or anything. Try again, same thing. Try in safe mode, same thing.
I've never had a problem with this before, does anyone have any recommendations?

Answer:Windows Update installs updates, but they're still listed under updates

I had the same thing on a system I was working on. I ran Spybot and Ad-aware and cleaned off so much crap... But I had to let Spybot start at reboot to catch the app-killer. Try that and see if you can get those updates to take. It may be some nastiness in the box. Umm, no pun intended.

I was referred here by NeonFx from the TechGuy Security forum. He had me run a slew of anti-virus/anti-spyware diagnostics. According to NeonFx my system is currently infection free and he states the problem lies elsewhere.

He also had me run the Windows Update FixIt tool in both Default and Aggressive mode - both of which did not fix the problem. So what is the problem??

PROBLEM:

When I run the install Windows updates, the updates do not install, and I receive the following message (not verbatim, but close):

"Some updates were unable to be installed..."

This problem "came out of no where" and there has been no suspicious activity prior to it starting other than an IE7 redirect rootkit that NeonFx helped me remove (if I recall correctly an infection of agp440)...

Stumped, stumped and stumped...

When I try to install KB3182373, a "Security Update for Microsoft Silverlight", Windows Update reports failure with the message "Code 643 Windows Update encountered an unknown error".
I ran WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab. It reported that "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem".
What can I do to fix this? I'm running Windows 7 Professional.

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

I would like to delete the failed updates list in Windows 7 Update.  I have done this in the past but forget exactly the process.

I think you go to Windows Folder-Software Distribution.  After deleting everyhting in the folder., i think you are to restart the computer.  Once finished the list of updates in Windows Update will be cleared.

Please correct if I am wrong.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer:Failed Updates in Windows Update. Want to clear update list?

This is the way I suggest :

Go to start > type in cmd > right click at cmd.exe > Run as Administrator.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" without quotes > hit enter.

Type in "start %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" without quotes > hit enter. A folder will come up. Don't close that black window.

Rename file "DataStore" to "DataStoreold" without quotes.

Go to that black screen, Type in "net Start WuAuServ" without quotes > hit Enter. After it finished you can close it.

Now your Windows Update logs will now cleared.

Thank you.

I'm currently on holiday and am connected through an expensive 3G modem plan. Whenever I try to connect, Windows update starts to download files. Every now and then I need to update MSE virus defs but Windows update downloads files GRR! What do I do about this pest? I just disabled the windows update service which obviously prevented me from downloading MSE defs

Answer:How to stop Windows update from downloading updates when I update MSE

Have you tried setting Windows Update to not Download updates?
You could also set it to not check for updates while you are on holiday.
For MSE definitions, open MSE and update from there.

After installing Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade on a new seagate 320 g hdd on a Toshiba L300 Laptop with 32 bit that had Vista with latest SP on a 120gb hdd.then installing the sp1, the windows updater will not download and install updates. As it was I had to manually download the sp1 to a flash drive from my desktop and put it on the laptop. No problems there, but was hoping it would solve the Update problem, but didn't. I get the "Fail" error codes. 1. 80070570 and 2. 8007001F. I have 52+ KB updates and not one of them will download and install. Called MS help and for two days they had me try different things. They even took control of the computer and couldn't figure it out. I checked memory and did a chkdsk on the new HDD. In desperation for trouble shooting I put the Vista HHD back in and ran updates with no problems at all then I reinstalled the 320 G HHD. I didn't have a BSOD at all. But I downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials and when I did that I would get the BSOD for what ever reason. I had a hard time getting it uninstalled because as soon as you would start windows, within a few seconds I would get the BSOD. When I finally got the Security Essentials uninstalled the BSOD Went away. Have no Idea what one had to do with the other. I just want to get the updater to work. Any Help
Thanks

What???

That makes zero sense.

one thing at a time.

Which computer do you want to install Win 7 on?

Do you have license?

One license = 1 machine.
1 machine = 1 license.

Gudday all
A few weeks ago I noticed 2 issues with my Windows XP Home.
1. The Window firewall warning comes up that the firewall wall is turned off despite being turned on when going to it. Eventually (5-7 mins) the warning disappears. This occurs everytime we turn the computer on.
2. We have 6 updates that always come up as needing to be installed but when we try to install the updates the computer wanders of to do it. Eventually it returns the message that these updates could not be installed.
The updates areKB975958
KB972580
KB973443
KB734475
KB974554
KB973705
If there are extra updates (i.e. > these six) the extra ones are installed successfully.
I have tried a few times to install these updates.
The computer is a desktop with XP SP3.
I also have a latop with XP Pro SP3 but have not noticed all of these issues.

I have the setting of 'Download updates, but let me choose when to install them'.

Is there anywhere in Windows that might suggest why these updates are not being installed?
I have had a look at Microsoft support pages but a search revealed nothing (I was not really sure how to phrase the question which might have make the search next to impossible).

Has anyone had this problem or similar and any suggestions? A virus has crossed my mind.

Answer:Windows updates not installing

Hello,
I know this topic has been posted before and I have tried most of the suggested solutions with no success.
I resorted to restoring my PC back to it,s factory settings and for 10 days it downloaded and installed the win7 updates and then stopped doing so. I used the club FixWU program to no avail as it still does not work. Running Belarc Advisor indicates that certain important updates are missing. As Microsoft have now finished their support for Win7 does this mean that the updates are no longer accessible to download. If so is there a dispositery somewhere where they are held and can be downloaded and manually installed?
Many thanks for taking the time to read this.
Regards,
Sid.

Windows notifies me that there are updates available. When I select to install the updates it takes a long time and I get a message stating that windows has detected that my computer is running on battery power and to plug my computer into an outlet. I get this message even when my computer is plugged into an AC outlet at the beginnig of the update dowload attept.

What could be the problem? I had to have Windows 7 reinstalled on my computer by someone at a local charitable company but I've noticed little weird things that didn't happen when I had my original version. Internet sessions closing suddenly and cursor skipping around the page eventhough I updated my touchpad drivers.

Any help with these issues is greatly apprecieated

Answer:Windows Updates not installing

At the outset you could seek the help of the person who installed Windows 7. That said the other way out is to reinstall Windows 7 with your original genuine DVD yourself.

But before you do that, please check that the installed copy of Windows 7 is genuine. If you find that it is genuine then please make the downloading and installation of the updates automatic. Wait for a day or two and check if all the updates are installed. If yes then leave the settings as they are and take no further action except keep using the computer normally.

If not then please reinstall Windows as suggested in the opening para.

Hi all, I have recently been put in charge of formatting all the laptops at work before they go back on sale.

One thing that I have found frustrating is installing the drivers. I have had some laptops sitting for around 4-5 hours, just simply updating the system bit by bit, and I was wondering if there is a way to just download all the drivers at once, and do a mass install.

Doing this on 7 or 8 laptops is painful

Thanks for any help in advance :)

Answer:Installing all Windows 7 updates ate once

If they are all the same drivers or you know which ones you need, then just download them onto a Flash or DVD and then copy them onto their respective machines.

It's the downloading bit that is time consuming so by doing it that way, you only need to download them once - although video drivers can take some time installing unless you choose the express option.

I am having some issues with windows update. The last couple weeks every time i shut down my laptop, there is a message in the screen " installing updates 1/1". I must let you know that in the past i always had my laptop on sleep mode, as a result i missed some updates. Moreover, sometimes because i was in a hurry despite the fact that windows mentioned that i must not power off the laptop when installing updates, i did.

I've got windows Xp and service pack 2 installed. Up till a few weeks ago I was getting the auto updates from windows. Then I had some problems with java updates. I was told that windows installer needed to be reinstalled, which I did, no luck with java updates, but then I was getting windows updates when I shut down, saying they would be installed before windows closes. This has happened 3 times so far and the updates have not been installed . I tried a manual install and I was told to update the window installer which I did. I thought I had downloaded several security patches but after each was downloaded they failed to install. Then I tried service pack 3 and it seemed to download  but afterwords it said it too had failed to install. I am stumped.Any advice appreciatedThanks

being installed without my knowledge...same problem...freezing.  Windows update is now set to install updates automatically and I cannot change this setting back to "Check for updates but let me choose when to install them".  The message

Would any of you advise turning off one's antivirus prior to installing a big Windows update, such as a service pack or the big .NET 3.5 SP1 update that Windows is now recommending as a "high priority" update for some computer users? I'm using AVG free 8. (Not the latest .233 build just yet...I'll tackle that after the .NET thing is done! The .NET is a 248 Mb download, so quite a job in itself.)

I have the updates for WinXP SP2 already downloaded on my PC. Is there a way to install them with having to run each .exe individually? Can I copy them to the same folder that Automatic Updates uses, then enable Automatic Updates, then when I shut down, will it give me the option to install them? Or is there another way to do this- maybe write a batch file that says something like "run all the .exe files in this folder and reboot when finished". I've never written a batch file so, if that's the way to go, some help will be appreciated.

Answer:Windows XP not installing updates

hello

now this is just for starters

now what i need to do is go to your (device manager)

now once there you will want to select from the toolbar of the window(veiw) then a drop down menu / from it you will select (show all hidden devices)

now if you see any (red or yellow) quotation marks , make a note of what they

now go to the (event veiwer) this is thru the (administrator tools) in the control panel
here you will find 3 to 4 subcatagories

you will want to check each of them for this is where windows keeps track of all errors
now you will want to make notes of the errors that have been recorded ( you do not have to make notes of double entries just of the dates of their happenings & how many there is)
you will get more information on the errors if you (right) click them / then select properties

------------------------------------
also
------------------------------------

do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it

if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to slipstream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

4.00 gb memory - AMD Athlon II x2 250u processor
On 4/13, I downloaded and successfully installed 13 windows security updates. On 4/16, I thought I would run a Disk Cleanup since it had been a while. On 4/17, I received notice that 2 important windows upates (3019978 & 3075220) were ready to download and install. After trying to do the install, they both failed. Many times I tried to no avail. I then thought maybe the disk cleanup removed some file I needed for this process. I then ran a system restore back to 4/13 and prior to the disk cleanup. It took about an hour for that process to complete but it did and now system runs a little slower but it runs. Unfortunately, the system restore did not solve the update install problem. They still fail and I am in a loop now where they keep showing up and asking to be installed before shutdown. I have tried a few fixes on my own: Services -- where you reset the update services process. No deal. Microsoft FixIt tool. No deal. Troubleshoot problems - no deal. Hello,
I have a dell e7250 laptop that refuses to install updates (specifically IE11 and it's prerequisites). I have ensured that the laptop is in the proper OU in AD to receive updates.  I have restarted the Windows Update service and run wuauclt
/resetauthorization /detectnow.  I have tried to install IE11 manually but it fails out as the prerequisites will not install.  I have been receiving code 80073701 and for IE 9C59.  My research shows that SP1 has been improperly installed
or is corrupted.  We would like to avoid rebuilding this machine from scratch as it is in a remote location.

Does anyone have a solution other than wiping the machine and starting from scratch?

Thanks,
Leanna

Hi all,for the last week or so I've not been able to install updates on my pc. It gets to the update screen after you click to shut down and it gets stuck on installing update 1 of 8, I've left it a good 6 hours and it's still on 1 of 8. I've tried updating via the microsoft website using the link in the automatic updates section of the control panel and it still gets stuck.I have a fast pc and a genuine windows copy that is registered... any suggestions anyone?

To do this, follow these steps:1. On the "Start" menu, click "Run:.2. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /unreg", and then press ENTER.3. On the "Start" menu, click "Run".4. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /regserver", and then press ENTER.Alsoclick hereIn the unred and re reg not that spaces they seem relevant[ie msiexec space /regserver]

I have several machines that I am restoring for friends but I'm having a problem with windows 7 updates. I can receive and install updates all the way up to and including SP1 but as soon as SP1 is installed no more updates come down. I have left the update check running for several hours with no success. It just keeps running, I don't get any message to say no updates available. I have tried a couple of Microsoft fix it's without any success either. Is this a problem on Microsoft end or could there be something I'm doing wrong. All laptops are genuine with licence codes and Internet is working fine. If anyone has any ideas or experience with this I would be grateful.

Answer:No updates after installing Windows 7 SP1

Every sense W-10 give away started Window 7 updates have been very slow. I mean very very slow.
Members have posted from 8 hours up to over 24 hours after a Clean Install or Repair Install. It just keep searching and searching.
If it's still in the Search stage you can reboot and try updates again. If things go well you might get a Microsoft server that isn't so busy.

Have these system been activated?

hello,I am having some issues with windows update. Thank you for your time and patience

Answer:windows keeps installing updates

The hack that I am I'd system restore before that point. There's probably a smarter more elaborate way of doing things. When you do restore it will try to update again I think.

I like doing my updates in groups, what I don't like, is after every group update I have to restart the machine.

Is there a way or setting to pause the restart until I'm finished, and I decide I want to restart?

What about the balloon pop-up at the taskbar, is there a way to stop it from appearing?

Let's say that you had 15 updates and you install 5 of them (but you find a way to not restart).

Then you install 5 more and put off restarting.

Then you install the final 5 - then restart.

That is the same thing as just selecting all 15 to be installed all at once. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

I know that lots of people suggest doing updates in small chunks... but I've not had any issues letting MS manage the updates. Maybe it because most of my experience with doing a lot of updates is within a VM.

As far as allowing more updates without restarting: I was able to do that by changing some registry values, but let's not post "solutions" like that for the general public to play with. I did my testing inside a virtual machine where there was nothing to lose.

Hi All..

I'm not sure if I'm in the right catagory for this question. Slap my hands if I am!I'm far from being a computer Guru, more or less a computer Dork I'm using Win XP and ie explorer. I under stand what Win updates are, OK! But am concerned about updating to service Pak 3, because I have heard about a lot of problems with it and folks having to do a complete re install after updating, etc, I have had a icon in my task that keeps popping up and saying, Up dates are ready for your computer.Click icon to install these updates.

I have a fear that one of them may be Service Pak 3, and I don't want to install it at this time. I'm also a afraid that it will start an Automaitc install of the updates.I do have Service Pak 3 that I ordered from MS, but don't want to mess with it at this time either.

My question is..?Is there a way I can find out just what updates they before getting stuck with a Auto install I can't stop if I click on the icon??? As told by others I have went to Control Panel, and opened WIn updates, and it says I have 2 updates ready for install, but it doesn't say what they are. Am open for any advice or Help how I find out what updates they are before installing them..

Thanks Anyone..

My computer is supposed to update itself automatically, but the little yellow shield keeps appearing in the taskbar saying it's downloading updates, but then disappearing almost straight away. I've no idea if it's downloading updates or not.

Obviously I'm a bit worried. If anyone knows what would cause this or how I could bypass it I'd be *very* grateful.

Okay, edit. I can now access Windows Update manually and it turns out I'm missing lots of security updates, which my computer should have downloaded automatically. It hasn't. Any ideas why this could be?

Thanks.

Security Update for Windows XP with Windows Media Format Runtime 9.5 (KB923689)
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB928365)

Security Update for Windows XP (KB951698)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB950759)

Having a problem with a Dell XPS 8300 and hoping someone here has the answer as I seem to have tried many potential fixes without success. Originally tried to install Office 2010 but it got about 80% of the way through and through up an error. 1935 I think. Further investigation showed that my windows updates seem to have stopped installing as well. I followed lots of advise on many websites but still had the problem. Eventually I restored the pc back to factory settings which included a format to remove any problem. Much to my surprise I am still having exactly the same issues, so far I have tried the following:-
carried out numerous Microsoft "Fix it" programs
ran sfc /scannow
turned off Mcafee
booted the pc in "clean" mode
carried out repair of Net framework
uninstalled and reloaded Net framework
reregistered update files
stopped and restarted BITS
ran the system update readiness tool
renamed the software distribution folder
Cleared the BITS queue of any current jobs
reset the contents of the catroot2 folder
checked for incorrect registry values

Probably several other fixes but can't remember them all.
At the moment the windows update wants to install the update to the windows update but after restarting the windows update it tells me it has failed. If I turn off the pc it tells me there are numerous updates to install but it goes through the list very quickly and when it check windows update after restarting they have all failed.

Ive recently come across a problem all starting after using windows xp disc to recover from a virus that made the pc not log in (some virus called ntso.exe which i got rid of)....
I used the windows xp disc with SP2 to do a non destructive install which kept all my files but had to reinstall gfx drivers / sound / mobo chipset and ai gear for asus mobo.
I then came across the problem , windows update says it was downloading , downloaded then said "express install" so I did install them but after about a minute it says error installing these updates and just closes and then update.exe keeps coming on and off in processes.

If anyone can help me solve this id be gratefull as its getting on my nerves.

My updates are set to check and install every day at 3:00AM. I've just noticed recently that when I get on in the mornings that I have a pop up saying that updates to windows 7 had failed to install. I ignored it figuring my internet just wasn't staying connected but the last few days when I've turned it off it is powering down forever because its' installing updates or trying tp. Then when it re-starts back up; it says all updates have failed so it is reprogramming and to not unplug or power down. So today I opened up the update file and found that it has been failing to update anything for over a year. Sporadically I see one that has succeeded to install here and there but most of them are all failed. As of right now I have the following updates waiting to be installed:

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2838727)
Download size: 27.9 MB

Answer:Windows 7 not installing updates

I think the 0300 bit is a Microsoft fetish, I know I am something of a night bird, but even my computer is seldom on at 0300 local.

I think you are going to have to do these updates manually. Start by going into 'Windows Updates' and changing the setting from 'Install automatically' to 'Notify when updates are ready' then 'Check for updates' and stand back !

After a few minutes, you will get the message 'Updates are ready for your computer'. MS splits these into 'Important' and 'Optional' categories. You can select all of them, or just some of them, then click 'Install updates' and the downloading and installation process will go on in the background - you can be doing other work while this happens. If you are using the internet, you will notice that it's performance is reduced, thihs is because the updates are using some of your bandwidth.

When the installation is finished, you will get one of three messages - (1) The updates were successful, or (2) Windows needs to restart, or (3) The updates failed.

For (1), no further action required. For (2) just re-boot the computer. For (3), go back to 'Check for updates' and select say 10 or 15 at a time. If you then get a batch fail to install properly, it is easier and less time consuming to work out which one is causing the problem.

I have my updates permanently set 'Notify but don't install'

Hope that helps,

Chris Cosgrove

Is there a way to shutdown windows 10 without installing updates? I know previous versions of Windows had command line or registry tricks that helped with this. Note the version of Windows 10 I am using is the normal version you get with the free upgrade.

Answer:How do you shutdown windows 10 without installing updates?

@Kaio that is very good question. I believe that is how its always been if an update is not installed it will install no matter what on shutdown or restart. I maybe mistaken but I am not all that knowledgeable on the so called windows 10 stuff as of yet having just upgraded from 8.1 in November.

I set up windows to automatically install updates, and I don't want to change that.

When I'm in a hurry to restart or shutdown my PC and I only see "Shut down installing updates" and "Restart installing updates", is there some way to do it bypassing the update?

I've tried command line: shutdown /s but it doesn't work (it updates before shutting down).
Likewise, Alt+F4 (from the desktop) only offers shutting down or restarting and updating.
Neiter logging out and then choosing to shut down (your only choice is also to update and shutdown/restart).

I recently re-installed (refreshed) Windows 98 over itself, retaining all data and programmes. Do I have to download all updates again? I have visited the update website and am not sure whether it scans the actual system or just the history of downloads - as it adds a disclaimer after the list saying it may not be accurate if programmes have been uninstalled. It says there are no critical updates to download. I'm not sure how to recognise the files for updates, but the windows update set-up folder has files dated 2002 and 2003 (I had the computer in August 2002 so some have been retained obviously) Would be grateful for any advice here. Thanks in anticipation.

Answer:Re-installing Win98Se and windows updates

if it states there are no critical updates then you are fine i guess, its up to you if you want any extra updates. try going to windows update click here and then clicking 'administrator options' click ' windows update catalogue/find updates for operating systems' select win 98/se and tick the type of updates updates you want then click 'search'when i checked there were 72 critical updates for win98 and 17 recommended updates.
