I will enclose here my complaint which I send to motherboard maker Gigabyte, regarding USB external hard disk problem. Please read it and if anybody knows how to solve this, thanks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My computer has external hard drive connected to USB 2.0 port(s), which is extremely slow. Drive is Transcend StoreJet. No drivers exist for it. It works perfectly for other I/O operations like copy, paste, delete, etc. When I try to make hard disk image with any program, and store it on Transcend Store Jet, speed starts with 50MB/s but drops to nearly zero in few minutes. You can see example on attached picture. It is the same with any program. Disk image would take more than one day to complete, if it completes at all. Actually, I never managed to finish image with any disk imaging software. I tried all usual software for that: Paragon, Aomei, Acronis, EaseusToDo, Drive XML, etc. Are there any USB or other drivers which are responsible for this issue? Can Gigabyte be serious regarding its costumers and provide them solution in order to use USB ports for most important thing (backup)? In this case, making disk image is totally impossible. USB 2.0 ports have speed оf 480 Mbit/s, theoretical. This is far cry from situation here. So, USB ports on this Gigabyte configuration is totally useless for backup on external USB hard disk. Clearly, there is serious bug which can cause loss of data - worst outcome in computer use for your customers. NOTE: all disks, internal HDD and external USB are checked multiple times and they do not have any errors. Hard disk has 500GB, only 137GB is occupied. BIOS can see USB disks. It is upgraded to version 4. It is on Safe Default Setting. Computer was in service few days ago and they did't diagnose any faulty component. Please feel free to ask me for further questions if needed. But this issue has to be solved URGENTLY! PS I could not open the case of mu computer to see Serial No. and Power Supply since it is under guarantee and that is prohibited. Again, please be URGENT!

Preferred Solution: Problem with slow (impossible) disk image making on USB 2.0 external hard disk

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Problem with slow (impossible) disk image making on USB 2.0 external hard disk

This could be any issue causing your problem , software , usb drive may have errors on it / or ?
Imaging your 150 Gig via Usb will take time { Mine are about 40-50 Gig } Operating System And Programs Only.

I personally partition my main Drive eg: c:\ and d:\ and so only the operating system is on C;\
Then use the D;\ to store your personal files. , this way your c:\ wont keep growing in size as you are storing everything there.
If you cant actually do anything with the computer because of warranties as you stated "just serviced" , ask them why you cant Image Drive.

Options:
1/ Try another hard drive to backup to.{ Usb will always be slower } than directly connected to Mobo.
2/ Use Mini Tool Partition Wizard [ Free } to create another partition - http://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmagic/partition-windows-7-system.html
3/ Remove all Temp Files / Restore Points / etc with Ccleaner { Free ] - https://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER
this will reduce C:\ size to minimal size { defrag drive also }.
4/ Use any program to Image C:\ { I use Acronis }. to the D:\ Backup Folder.
5/ Then copy the image to any portable drive or external if need be.
6/ Use the D:\ for your personal files and folders as a backup also.

Sometimes you have to do things yourself - than rely on Service Centres and Costs.
If you run a Business then you claim all your costs incurred.

All this will take time but you will have backups and feel at ease.

Hi All,Has anybody seen this problem at all, please?I'm using XP Home on a laptop with Drive Image 2002. I've partitioned its disk so I can save an image file to what is the D:drive.I also have a Maxtor One Touch external hard drive and would ideally like to save the image file to it as well as D: - extra security if you like. However, I can't save the image directly to the external drive as Drive Image won't me. I think it can't "see" the drive as it's USB connected.I also can copy the image file(s) from the D: partition to the Maxtor either. The error message says to contact Powerquest about this, but they've been swallowed by Symantec and I can't see any info about this on their site.Any ideas? Many thanksDumfy

I'm 90% sure that it shouldn't make a difference, that it doesn't has to be a SATA / SAS internal slave drive for you to create that drive image. But I never create a win 7 disk image on a USB Ext. hard drive before. Has any1 done it? Any difference than creating on a SATA internal drive?

Answer:Can you create your disk image on an external USB hard drive?

No difference.

I've done it with Clonezilla and imaged my laptop's hard drive to an external 2TB hard drive. I booted up into Clonezilla Live at bootup, restored the image to the laptop's hard drive, restarted and booted into the OS without issue.

Probably only difference I have to say is noticeable is the transfer speeds. Internal SATA hard drive probably would have done it faster than a USB2.0 connection to the external hard drive.

I use Windows 7 professional 64 bit edition. Im a novice user who is doing this for the 1st time.
I intend to use Macrium Reflect Free edition to store an image of my C drive which is the only partition I have, (931 GB ( of which 537 GB is free) ) on an external HDD which is of Sony, 1TB & Fat32 formatter.

But am I supposed to format the external HDD before attempting to create an image on it? The external HDD already has nearly 400 GB contents on it, & i cant wipe it off. Does the imaging process wipe it off? Or am i expected to do it, before starting the imaging process??

& also how much space is the image going to occupy roughly??

& one more doubt.. What is meant by compression? If I go for a "medium compression" option, will it affect anything when I restore from the image? I mean.. Will it affect the quality of the media files when I restore from the image?

I'd be highly thankful if someone could guide me on this.. Please..

Answer:Should I format external HD before creating a hard disk image on it?

No reason to do that. The Macrium image will be just one more file to store, albeit a big one. Just like a huge picture of your cat. You don't need to re-format your external just because you want to store a picture of your cat on it. "Create an image" simply results in an image file that needs to be stored somewhere. It's "image restoration" that wipes stuff out.

No and no. Image restoration would wipe the partition to which the image is restored, but simply storing an image file wipes nothing--no more than storing the picture of your cat onto the external would do.

& also how much space is the image going to occupy roughly??

Roughly 50% of the occupied space of the imaged partition.

If your C is 300 GB, with 100 occupied, figure about 50 GB for ... Read more

I just recently backed up my desktop PC hard drive to a disk image on a second hdd using Macrium Reflect software. However, since I've never tried restoring this data, I really have no idea whether it will work should it be necessary. Would it be practical to do a 'test' restore to an external hdd (I know these are relatively slow, but it's just a test). I only have about 70gb total including WinXP Pro SP2. I simply want to confirm that the restore will actually work. The external hdd's ultimate use would be to simply host disk images.

Historically, I've only backed up what I considered critical data to a second hard drive. I was willing to reinstall OS and programs on a new drive if it ever became necessary. However, since getting a notebook, I was faced with the prospect of having to restore from a set of OEM recovery disks (WinVista disk not included separately) which would take forever as it installed tons of factory bloatware and other crappy stuff that I would end up having to remove.

I finally decided the time was right to back up both computers to disk images on an external hdd since this seemed a viable solution to avoiding the notebook recovery scenario. The entire purpose of this drive would be to archive disk images from both computers, with my desktop PC's second hdd used to backup the external drive.

This seems like a logical game plan, but am I missing any potential pitfalls? Opinions welcome!

Hello, I have a Thinkpad X220 laptop.  I wish to format the entire hard drive and install Ubuntu.  As a precautionary step, I wish save the recovery media on to another source should I later decide to return my laptop to factory configuration.  I do not have a CD/DVD drive and do not wish to make CD/DVD bootable discs.   I have an external hard drive where I save important material and have about 50 gigs of free space remaining. I'm trying to do two things: 1 - Create a bootable USB (factory recovery disk) that will allow me to return my computer back to factory configurations 2 - Save an image of this USB onto my external hard drive so that I can use my USB for daily storage purposes and not have it be a dedicated recovery disk. Has anyone done something similar to this successfully? Thank you for your help.

Hi, im having a problem trying to create a system image and store it in my external hdd.
This isnt the first time i use the windows backup to create a system image, ive done it before using this external hdd with no problems at all.
But now, for some reason it wont detect this hard drive, it only gives me the option to store the image on a dvd, i dont know why?, i tested the hard drive on a different computer and IT WORKS, i tried to create an image and it does work.

Heres a picture so you guys can see the problem:

sorry the image is kinda big, but as you can see on the left, windows DOES detect the hard drive, BUT when i try to create the image, it simply doesnt, it only gives me the dvd option.
i hope you guys can help me here, thanks a lot

Answer:Create system image won't detect external hard disk

You have not stated the App you are using to create the sysrem image. Please tell us.

I have experienced the same thing once in a way with Acronis but the issue always gets resolved by restarting Acronis. You may try to restart your imaging App to see if the matter gets resolved. But I suspect that you may have already done that to no effect.

The next thing to do would be to change your image back-up App. This might succeed. Please try it out and let us have the results.

Ok, here is the deal, and I don't know why it happened. If someone can explain why this happens, I'd be grateful.

For some reason the system hung/froze at the Windows flag logo during start-up. I know what caused it, but I don't know why, and would like to understand why.

I made a backup of the system image, and backed it up on an external hard disk. I restarted the computer, and it hung at the Windows flag log. The flag animation froze and the system become completely unresponsive. The only way to shut the power down was pushing the power button to force computer to do a hard shut down. Ie started the computer back up and it booted into the Windows Error Recovery screen.

I first chose the ?Start Windows Normally? option, and it froze at the Windows flag logo again. I forced the system to shut down by pushing the power button, and chose the ?Launch Startup Repair? option when the computer booted back up. Windows was unable to repair the computer after two attempts, and the computer recommended that I use a Restore Point to fix the error. I chose the most recent restore point that I created earlier. I rebooted the computer and loaded into Windows just fine. But to make sure everything was O.K., I restarted the computer again, and it froze again at the Windows flag logo. I shut the computer down and restarted it, and the Windows Error Recovery screen appeared again. The computer failed to repair the program, chose my restore point again, and when the comput... Answer:Impossible to make HDD image on external USB 2.0 HDD - to slow and stops

I'd try a different external HDD.... its probably driver related. Either a driver for the external or the USB BUS controller.I use to run into this issue with Ghost 2003 over USB with specific no-name external enclosures I was using. When I used my 320GB Seagate it worked flawless. I also had where it would start and show a speed and then the speed would drop to next to nothing. I also had a HP G-Series server that didnt work with the USB with Ghost 2003 and this was because Ghost didnt have the necessary drivers to get the USB BUS to function. You could be looking at a USB driver issue where the software you are using doesnt have the proper USB driver support to function properly and so its trying to use a generic driver.

I have XP Pro; 1Gb RAM; Pentium III/700. Everything is going pretty well, but I have tried to perform a chkdsk. My internal hard disk is partioned as C and D; they "accepted" perfectly chkdsk in "normal times", but the 80 G external, that as a matter of fact, behaves perfectly, has taken more than three hours (until I stopped it) in the last revewing: the "files" = it practically stops in "2%"; other previous three ones's reviews took normal time. Is it just for the hard disk's size, or is it the sign that something is going wrong? Many thanks and greetings

Hi

Im getting really slow transfer speeds to external usb hard disk.
Transfering a big file it starts off quite quick and gets up to 5% or so quite quickly.
Then it starts to slow down until it settles at around 5MB/s

Im at a loss i was expecting around 40MB/s maybe on USB 2 ?

My specs are (taken from CPUID)
Gigabyte GA-MA780G-UD3H motherboard
8GB DD2 4-4-4-12 @401Mhz
AMD Phenom II x4 940 @ 3013Mhz

Im at a loss. Is it a driver issue? When connected it shows under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" as "USB Mass Storage Device"

any ideas please?

Answer:Slow transfer speed to external USB Hard disk?

For normal external USB 2 HDD I might expect ~30MB/s for a sequential file transfer.
What type of USB HDD are you using?

You could download CrystalDiskMark and post the performance figures.
Download Center - Crystal Dew World

Running the test on another HDD as well would be useful if you can get your hands on one. Might indicate a drive specific issue.

I have a problem regarding my external Toshiba hard disk 500 GB where it can?t be detected in my computer and also disk management. I have formatted the external HD since I was asked to format it when an error popped up.
So I formatted it and after the formatting completed, I tried to connect the hard disk to my Windows Win 7 laptop. When I connect it to the laptop, it can?t be detected and yet the hard disk is blinking with its white light like it used to when it is connected to the laptop. I tried the disk management thingy, but it can?t detect my hard disk. I tried in other laptops but the result is same
What can I do to make it better? Please help me.

Answer:External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

First off, how old is your Toshiba external HDD? Also, when it starts to spin up, do you hear any sort of clicking or whining noise?

If you hear any noises that sound off, it's possible your external HDD is failing.

When you formatted it, what file system did you use to do so? Because sometimes even if Windows can't detect it, I have had success with booting with a Ubuntu Live CD, and then connecting the external HDD in order to format it that way. It all has to do with how Windows formats HDD's and how Ubuntu and other Linux systems do.

If you can I recommend downloading Ubuntu onto a CD and boot to it on one of your computers, in the Live CD mode, so it doesn't install anything. Once its loaded, plug in the Toshiba and try to format it as NTFS (this is important, because Ubuntu doesn't use it as a native file system, so you need to make sure that NTFS is selected on the format window, not EXT4 or the other types of Linux OS File Systems)

If it doesn't work, post back here, and I will see if I can help you some more. Also feel free to PM me if you have any other issues.

Regards,
-Alex

Couple of hours ago my Windows 7 could not recognize my external USB hard disk (Maxtor Basic). It came up on Disk Management and Device Manager but not on My Computer. However I fixed it (by deleting its line off regedit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, plugging out the ext. HD and plugging back in). Windows automatically installed the drivers and I could access the drive.

But now Windows shows my Maxtor as a fixed disk drive, instead of "devices with removable storage". I still have the option to "Safely remove hardware and eject media" from taskbar, however I rather have Windows treating it as a Removable USB Storage so that the disk can sleep when not in use. I am pretty sure it has something to do with regedit, so any help would be appreciated.

Answer:USB external hard disk shows up as internal fixed disk

Welcome to Windows 7 Support Forums, Sactyr.
A word of caution! Its never a good idea to alter your register,
IMHO please review your device manager and check your devices for your disk drives, check for any warnings in the driver area.
I'm attaching my screenshot for comparison as I have a similar configuration.

If I am saving a backup to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 USB external hard disk

2. Backing up to an internal 3.5 hard disk vs backing up to an external 2.5 hard disk using USB 2.0, roughly how much extra time would the external backup need to complete the backup process?

Answer:Speed of saving to internal hard disk vs USB 3.0/2.0 external disk?

There's no definitive answer, it would all depend on which internal drives you had (SSD/HDD, SATA 6GB, SATA 3GB) and which external drives you had and their relative transfer speeds. It's all just guesswork without that info.

hi all,

i would like to ask you a very basic question:

What is the difference between an external hard disk and an internal hard disk mounted on external enclosure?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure risky in terms of loosing the data?

Is using internal hard disk in external enclosure reliable to use?

kindly let me know as there is a vast difference in the price of these hard disks. The external hard disk is costing more and if i use internal hard disk in external enclosure price is very much reduced.

my only concern about using internal hard disk in external enclosure is the reliability.

thanks in advance,

regards,

I have an external hard disk which got corrupted. When i connect the disk through USB it shows as an unknown device in the disk management with no option to format.

In My computer the device is showing as H: drive but unable to access it. It asks if i want to format or not but when i go for format it does not do it. I want to erase the disk completely as of now. What should i do??

I tried to load it from linux but there it shows as Device Error. Disk Failure is Imminent.

Can something be done or is it a hardware failure.

Answer:External Hard disk showing as RAW in disk management

Sounds like the drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure is faulty.

I would first remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up as a slave to a desktop PC. See if you can then access it. If you can, then post back for further instructions with the version of your OS.

What 3.5 enclosure is good?

Thanks

Answer:3.5 external hard disk vs 3.5 internal hard disk with enclosure?

What do you mean fixed into an enclosure to work like an external drive? Are you referring to a My Book 3.0 VIA USB 3.0.... vs.... an internal SATA III SSD or HDD? Be a little more specific.

Greetings,

I have an Asus laptop running windows 7 64 bit and this laptop came with 2 hard drives, each partitioned into two parts (C:\ & D:\ and E:\ & F:\).

I am transferring over 30GB of data from one drive (C:\) to the other (F:\)

Get this... the transfer rate is 1.2MB/s right now. Over 9 hours left to copy the 30GB. There are over 125,000 items but that still does not justify the 1.2MB/s

I am open to any suggestions but first, a few points.
Yes, I am sure they are two separate drives with those partitions.
Error checking showed zero errors on both drives.
This is the 3rd time I am trying a transfer.
Both drives are relatively empty (especially the F:\).
C:\ is my system disk.
The SMART data shows no read/write errors or overheating.
I have disabled the virus protection and all real-time scanning.

Again, I am very open to suggestions and checks. Feel free to post your idea!

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Laptop Hard Disk to Hard Disk transfer Extremely Slow

My experience with file transfers of the type you describe...is that the number of files doesn't matter...what matters is how large the files are.  Video files take much longer than text or document files.

Slow transfer rates between partitions/drives...can indicate a problem with either the partititon or the drive, IMO.

Hi guys,

need some help, everytime I try to remove a USB hard disk I get a message saying it is not possible because some program is using it.
There is no program (to my knowledge) using the disk, I've tried to wait about half an hour then I got the same message again.
I disabled write-caching for the disk so I can (in theory) unplug the disk without safe-removing it, nonetheless I'd really like to know what is causing the problem and fix it.
The disk is connected to the PC via a USB hub.
I have no issue in removing USB flash drives.

Any suggestion?

Answer:USB hard disk impossible to remove safely

This is usually due to a process accessing the drive. See this excellent post by jcgriff2 on tracking down the process that may be causing the problem.

Hi Guys.

I am having a wierd problem with my simpletech usb hard disk. its and external 500 gb, which i purchased yesterday. It connects to my pc easily and installs all the drivers it need. I can see it in my computer and disk managment. Problem is that i can read anything from it easily but as soon as i start to copy or backup any files to it it disconnects immediately and then reconnects, so the copying process is lost. i have many other dthings connecting to my computer such as printers, camera, phone usb , mouse keyboard all through usbs and they all work fine and my pc works fine aswell, even usb memory stick works fine except usb hard drive and its also having external power.

I have also unplugged all the extra usb from my pc and still get this problem. with other pcs this drive works perfectly. i have checked all other sttings and they seems to be all ok and i can't find anything wrong with my pc as its up to date, i have also checked the power managment for usb.

My specs are
inter c2d e6600
gigabyte p965 motherboard
2 gig 800mhz ram
geforece 8800gt card wireless and rest all ok

anyone has any solution or same problem. please help.

Hi folks,

There is a tutorial on the forums which shows how to use windows 7 (i presume) to make a full disk image backup for restore purposes.

My first question: is this disk image the same as one which would be produced by say norton ghost?

Is win7 the first Microsoft os to
Have this feature built in?

If so i presume there is no longer a need for 3rd party ghosting apps (other than those folks not using 7?)

Basically I need to make an image of a drive before I install win 7 so does anyone have any recommendations of a good ghosting prog - preferably free. Otherwise I guess I'll need to buy one online tonight

Cheers

Answer:Making a disk image - for backup

The disk image created by Win 7 is not the same as that created by Ghost in that the two images would not be identical bit-for-bit. However, when images are restored by their respective programs the end result would be the same, a fully restored disk.

As far as I know, Win 7 is the 1st MS OS to include disk imaging but I'm not 100% certain of that.

There will always be a need for 3rd party apps because they have different features or they're faster, better interface, more intuitive, etc...

One free imaging program that gets recommended a lot on these forums is Macrium Reflect. I've never used it but I understand it's pretty decent.

Answer:Problem while connecting external hard disk

What type of external HDD are you trying to connect? Is it a 2.5" laptop style hard drive or a 3.5" desktop style hard drive? All 3.5" desktop hard drives will require an external power source to connect them via USB. Your computer seems to be a newer computer so power at the USB ports should not be a problem for a 2.5" laptop hard drive. You can try a power boosting Y-cable like this:
USB 2 0 A Female to 2 Dual USB Male Hub Power Adapter Y Splitter Cable Cord SGCC | eBay

That will split the power draw between two USB ports if you have two USB ports next to each other on the computer.

Even the Y-cable will not work for a 3.5" hard drive, though, it requires it's own real power supply.

Dear frnds,

I have been using my external hard disk(WD My Passport Essential SE) 1 Tb, since last 6 months, but after a recent virus scan, my laptop is not showing the external hard disk, i have tried using My computer, Manage and Disk management.

I am unable to find external hard disk even in Disk management i.e. it is not showing.
So please can anyone help me in this concern......
I would really appreciate and thanks in advance

Answer:Problem with my external WD 1TB My Passport hard disk

First, try accessing it from another computer to be sure it can be accessed elsewhere. The Western Digital Passport Essential has had a pretty high failure rate as seen in our shop... so the unavailable external hard disk may not have anything to do with the virus scan may have nothing to do with the problem.

In other cases, I would attempt to reinstall the Passport drive. You do not usually cause any damage to the data on the drive when you do this.

I right click on the remove hardware, I click on stop and then comes an error... cannot eject generic volume, please try again(something of that sort) (made sure no other hard drive or usb pen drive was connected), This happened several times, I also made sure no other program was making use of this disk... then i dirctly unplugged it out of frustration

Answer:Solved: Problem with my external hard disk

Did you try running a program to verify no files are being used by the drive when you try to remove it?

If not try OpenedFilesView: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/opened_files_view.html

"OpenedFilesView displays the list of all opened files on your system. For each opened file, additional information is displayed: handle value, read/write/delete access, file position, the process that opened the file, and more... "

You can click the column header of open files to alpha sort all them - which should make it easier to identify files on the drive in question since they will be sorted by drive letter.

Answer:Toshiba external hard disk problem?

The best way to test the drive is to remove it from its case and connect it to the internal wiring of a desktop PC and see if it operates OK. Often the problem is simply the power supply or a failure in the circuitry in the external box.

Hi,
I have just connected a new external Hard Disk with my Laptop. However, it is not shown the computer. When I checked over it in the Devices Manager, I have found it listed in the list of Hard Disk Drivers. When I click on the its properties , I notice that the device is working well in the frame of the status of the device.
However, I found out there is a question mark on this hard disk in the other devices tree.

I have tried connecting it via USB2/USB3, but this makes no difference.
When I immediately connected it, I notice Windows notified that there is a new detected device. But in eventually I didn't found it defined.

I have tried clicking a right- click on it, then I have chosen 'update the operating program'. But this also didn't make any difference.

On top of that,
When I have opened a program which is specialist in the division of discs, I found it shown. However, I didn't found all of its capacity shown. It is 1TB(1024GB); however, what is shown is 931.48GB
If I split it with this program regardless of whether or not it is defined and will be shown in my computer, will it be damaged??

Any comments would be quite highly appreciated.

I'm not sure if I should be posting this here or in the Operating System Forum, please help!

I happen to use Seagate's FreeAgent GoFlex 2TB Harddrive [NTFS format] and am using it on a Windows 7 Ultimate with SP 1(x86). The drive would usually show up under "Devices with Removable Storage" section rather than under "Hard Disk Drives" section in Windows Explorer. It was working perfectly fine.

I had lent to a friend of mine who wanted to take a back up of his stuff. He is using Windows 8 Pro with WMC (x_64).He then returned it to me. I could see my files on his laptop.

When I reconnected the external hard disk to my system, the drive's icon is visible in Windows Explorer, but is now shown under "Hard Disk Drives" section. Also I could see the drive listed in the Disk Management section of Computer Management in NTFS format.

The problem is that I can't see the files and folders in the Windows Explorer even when I trun on "Show hidden files and folders" option from Folder Options. Also I did not get any messages to format the drive.

My files are present on the disk, of this I am certain as,I can see that a certain portion is shown a occupied in the Windows Explorer.

I have even tried using the TestDisk utility to analyse the status of the drive and to search for lost partitions, but that to has failed, as I can't see the files in Windows Explorer.

Hi,Many times this problem occurs when the hard drive has failed or is failing. However, it could also be a corrupted boot sector. To enable legacy mode and disable secure boot try crating a supervisor password in the Bios, you can disable the password later when you have changed the wanted settings (important, do not forget or loose the password). Now try going into recovery mode "Recovery when Windows 10 does not start correctly" https://support.hp.com/hk-en/document/c04758961 Try to perform a startup repair. Let me know if you need further help,David

Hi guys,

After running my old toshiba laptop into the ground after 5 years, a system 32 error preventing me to start up prompted me to buy a new laptop. I connected the old Hard Disk (HTS541080G9AT00) to the new one externally and thankfully all my data was still there but permissions issues were preventing me from accessing anything. My mate told me to tick the 'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects' box and this looked to me working as it then started going through every file and changing the owner to my my latop. About an hour into this, it froze up but I left it for a long time as I know its not a good idea to interfere if its still doing something but eventually I had to go out so I had no choice but to turn off the laptop. Today when I try to access the external HD, it just get the spinning circle as if its doing something but nothing happens, and then eventually 'My Computer' stops responding. I looked in the device manager and it is showing the HD present and working properly, but nothing I do will allow me to get into it, its just constantly busy. I was told to try unistalling the USB drive to see if that helps but when I try to do that, it just says its uninstalling but again, seems to take forever and nothing actually happens.

I am now totally fed up of this, im just an average pc user and want to get to my files on my old HD but it seems an impossible task. Does anyone know any simple ways to solve this problem and why it might be happening? L... Read more

Hello, i have a problem with the disk space with my external hard drive.

My external hard drive had 698gb in total.

I wanted to install Linux Fedora along with my windows vista but it said that my hard drives (internal and external) need shrinking to get disk space for fedora. I went to disk manager and i did shrink my internal C drive but it was only 2GB. So i tried it with my External drive but it didnt work.

Now in disk manager it says that the hard drive has 698gb in total but in MY COMPUTER it says that i have 349GB in TOTAL!!! Please help? because i lost lots of space!!!!

Here is an image:

Answer:External Hard Drive disk space problem

What I'm guessing is on the disk management window obscured by the properties window is two partitions on Disk 1. Presumably you've shrunk the original NTFS partition and created an extra partition to install Linux to. You'll need to delete that partition and resize the NTFS partition to use the extra space.

hi.

i just recently bought a new external hard disk (storage) and it cant seem to work. there are drivers, and ive installed all of them but still nothing. the problem is that the new hard disk doesnt show up at the 'my computer'. its a usb external 40gb disk for laptops, ive got another one which i had bought years ago and it works still fine.

i could locate the hard disk at the "devices" area but it says that the driver and everything is installed. so, basically, the device exists, just that i cant see it.. which doesnt make sense. i cant roll back driver or anything cos, well, there wasnt an earlier version of the driver.

physically, the hard disk looks and well, sounds normal, as if its working. when i plug it in my usb slot, a bubble pops out at the bottom right and says that "this device can perform faster....." as if its being detected already.

please please please please help.
it will be very much appreciated!

A lot of USB hard disks have two USB plugs, you have to plug both of them in at once for it to work.

I have 2 PCs both upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10. Making a disk Image Backup on one of the PCs is fine but the other PC produces this fault
"An internal error has occurred. The specified resource name cannot be found in the image file (0x80070716)"
Can you point me in the right direction to solve this please.

Answer:Making a Disk Image Backup on Windows 10 Upgrade PC

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

You may want to do a manual backup on this one PC. This error is related to File History. It should be fixed when Windows 10 is installed.

You could try this here:

Hi guys,

I will try to explain this as simple as i can.So let's start
I have laptop ASUS N75SF and it is a year old,so i have decided to format.I have two separate hard disks that are the same brand,SeaGate 9500423 AS, each 500 gb capacity. Before i decided to format , one of my hard disks(that is my partition D) started to make strange noises and it was not recognized, but i was using my laptop without problems because my windows was installed on my other hard disk (that is my partition C).So now my question is this :
After i formatted them both i have no clue which one is which ? they are like :
Disk 0 Partition 1 465 gb
Disk 1 Partition 2 465 gb
So how do i choose the one that is better and not having problems to pust my winodows on?
I know that i can buy new one and replace it with the one that is having problems, but right now i have no money to do that .I am student

Thanks in advance

Hi all,
following problem:

My computer is running very slow.  It happened suddenly from one day to another.

I checked for a virus or similar with Malwarebytes, Spybot Search & Destroy and AVG. Nothing was found (checked another time a week later, same result).

The Task Manager showed that only 1,5 of 4 GB RAM are used. The CPU is at nearly 0%. That seems not to be a problem.
But when I open the Ressource Manager it shows that my hard disk has 100% time with maximal activity without writing much (most of the time: nothing). While being inactive (I am doing nothing except viewing the Ressource Manager) there are some tasks which bother me (mainly svchost local service network restricted). Sometimes they go away and the computer is working properly, sometimes not. Another important point is that the answering time of the tasks who are doing smth with my hard disk are often over 5000 (the record was 16.000).
Even if my computer is working nearly properly (you can work but need to wait for each website 2 minutes and for a program to start nearly 5 minutes) you often see the "no response" (don't know how it is called in english, sorry for that!) at the upper window of the program.

I've had my Acer Aspire 5310 laptop for a few months now with Windows Vista. I have an 80GB hard drive, partitioned into two drives as default.

Until now I've never noticed that the numbers didn't add up. I know when you buy and 80GB hard drive, it should actually show up as less due to bits and bytes and what not (80GB=74GB roughly) but I found something fishy in Disk Management. There is a drive showing up with no letter assigned to it which is nearly 10GB in size and after doing the math it accounts for the 10GB i lack after adding my two 32GB hard drives together.

So I have 2 x 32GB drives plus this weird drive which is 10.

I have attached the screenshot of disk management.

If anyone knows what is going on here I would very much appreciate it!

Cheers, Darren (newbie)

Answer:Problem with Vista Disk Management/Being robbed of hard disk space!

has this just recently appeared? This is a longshot, but if you have Kaspersky lap installed then that could be the problem. It autologs roughly 10 gigs of data without your permission, it is easy to get rid of, but annoying none the less.
However this doesn't seem to likely as what seems to have happened here is that you have accidently split one of your hard drives into two. Either that or a program like deamon tools has created a virtual drive. Do you use either deamon tools or alcohol 120?

My company's computer needs to be patitioned and reformat. The system is still working well. I mean, nothing wrong with anything (weird huh?). Ok the hard disk just need to be 'split'. I mean, make drive C & D on the hard disk. I know how to do that... easy... Then the HD need to be formatted & reinstall windows XP. Ok, easy too..

But the main problem occured before I do anything (partition & format). I have my own bootable CD that I usually use for partitioning & formatting.

Ok, i insert the CD & restart.
I went to BIOS & changed the boot order (1st boot: CD-ROM, 2nd: HDD-0 & 3rd: Floppy). Then restart again.
Ok the bootable CD is excellently loaded.
I typed fdisk, then came the first problem. it says something like 'no fixed disk'. I exit fdisk.
Then I typed format c:, 2nd problem occured. it says something like, 'invalid drive'.
I forgot the error message because the pc is in my office right now. I'm currently at home 'begging for help' So the error message is not accurate. sorry..

I think, if I run the CD, the hard disk will not be loaded (or should I say, hard disk failure). & If I take off the CD & restart again, change the BIOS (1st boot: HDD-0) then windows will load! Weird right?

I don't think my CD is 'corrupted' nor broken because I tried to run the CD from another PC. Yes, I can access the C drive from that PC.

Does anyone have any idea of the ... Read more

Answer:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

I am having this Hard Disk problem. My old Hard Disk (Samasung 500GB) (bought in 2010) started showing signs of corruption (like Windows doing chkdsk at every boot, and data getting lost). So I bought a NEW Hard Disk (Western Digital 1TB) last month (Sep 2016) to backup all the data from old one. I didn't have time to backup but wanted to use PC so I Clean Installed Windows 7 64bit on the New Western Digital 1TB and used it about a month without any problems.

A couple of days ago i decided to backup up the data. I reformatted the New Western Digital 1TB with Gparted and did a clean Windows 7 Install again. I connected the old Samsung 500GB to the motherboard and started copying the files to the new Western Digital 1TB.

Suddenly Windows showed me an error "Windows detected a hard disk problem" which makes sense because the Samsung 500GB is old and might be failing BUT the error is showing both of my Hard disk in the dialog box.

Is my new hard disk corrupt as well?
Why is Windows showing my new hard disk as failing?
Can Windows mistakenly show both hard disk in error?

Please help i am confused. sorry for a confusing question. i will answer anything required.

I have taken the screenshot of the error message, they are in attached files.
1)The 1st Screenshot shows both my Hard disk in the error box (OLD Samsung and NEW Western Digital WD)
2)The 2nd Screenshot shows only one of my Hard disk and its the new one (Western digital WD)

Hi all,I recently bought a HP DV6-3299eg laptop and it has started to show up a SMART Hard disk error screen whenever the computer is turned on.  Also, when I'm using the machine it pops up warning messages saying there is a problem with the hard drive and i need to back-up. However, when I run the System Diagnostics Quick and Full Hard Disk tests, they pass 100%. Also, when I run the Start-up test, the Memory test is a 100% pass. And the Primary Hard Disk Self test is 100% passed.  But on both the start-up test screen and the Hard Disk test screen it shows up "SMART check: Hard Disk 1 SMART (301). No warranty code shows up only that SMART check error number. I bought the computer in Vienna, Austria, but am currently in Budapest, Hungary. The chain of stores I bought it from (SATURN) has stores in both countries and so I took it to the Budapest store yesterday to see what they could do.  Through minimal broken English I understood i was to go home and reinstall windows and that would get rid of the problem.  But that is not the case.  I reinstalled windows 7 last night, then upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate (to get the laptop working in English), and the SMART check error still shows up on start-up.  I've backed up all my files and just waiting to see what happens. I phoned HP support earlier but they're closed as it's Sunday, so I will try again tomorrow. So in the meantime I thought I would post on here and see ... Read more

I am a new player here, so excuse me if i make a mess of this. I have a Sony Vaiol laptop and am  running vista.  I haven't used it for a lot other than internet, so data etc.is limited and space is good.my problem started suddenly when i turned on pc and a black screen with the error message,"disk read error, press cntrl+alt+del to continuie."didnt do it! Wouldnt do anyuthing. Finally, I acquired legal sony recovery disks. And when the screen to choose operating system comes up, there is none so it says apply drivers and im lost, I have no familiarity with hard disk drivers so....but did bring up command prompt in recovery and through luck and lil else, i happened on chkdsk and found it to all check out but it does say NTFS not fat 32, but found no problems. Now Im dumb completely!!! Help if you can.

Answer:hard disk`??? wont reboot even with recovery disk yet all disk checks say fine.

Sony Vaiol laptop.Has problems of its own. It is not piratical to give you guidelines on this laptop. There have been many issues about how to repair and maintain it. The recovery discs should have everything you need. Here is a bit of advice, not really my own, try to sell the unit to somebody that thinks they know how to fix it. Then go buy a new or used laptop that will suit hour needs. The cost of ownership of any laptop is higher that many new users expect. Some more than others. This  may sound like a rant to put down Sony. It is not. Sony has made their own bed of nails. Look at this article from last year:Sony Vaio Laptop Recall: Everything You Need To KnowRead the article. You decide.

I don't know what is my problem because is not the first time that usb external hard drive is working fine until get damage and said " it need to be formatted " and lost all the INFO because I have to format again the disk to be usefull. Also it is not the same hard disk.

Answer:Why USB external hard disk show now " The disk need to be formatted"

Hi Elnene,

I am actually having the same issue regarding a spare external drive and Windows 7. The drive works perfectly on XP and Wii but the second I plug it into my laptop (windows 7) **YOU NEED TO FORMAT......** This is not an option! I have searched the internet far and wide - there are a few fixes that have worked for some but unfortunately not me. I also noticed that NONE / NO ONE / NOT ONE Windows 7 'Help sites' that have Windows 7 'gurus' have bothered to EVER answer this rather common problem. There are threads older than 4 years that have never been answered and I see your thread is already 4 weeks old... Sad really.

I CAN'T BELIEVE MicroSoft can't help regarding this issue???????????????????

In this time I hope you have come right!!!
Kind regards

Hi, I'm sorry if I post this on wrong section. I'm new & this is my 1st post on this forum

Anyway, I'm curious about making file shortcuts between hard disk. Example, real folder is in D: drive. I want to make a shortcut for that particular folder in E: drive. Is this possible? if yes could someone teach me? Thank you

Answer:Making file shortcut between hard disk. Is it possible?

Yes, it's possible. Navigate to the file/folder you want to create a shortcut to. Right click, on the popup look for "Send To". See if your other drive is an option. If so, click it. It it's not, then choose "Create Shortcut". That shortcut will appear. Then right click that shortcut and "Cut". Navigate to where you want the shortcut and then "Paste". You can then (If you want) right click the shortcut and "Rename".

For some time now I have been confused by my motherboard main screen (shows motherboard type and a picture) which had started to take sometimes up to 5 minutes to bypass. Sometimes just because it was quicker i'd go through the motherboard BIOS and hit "Discard and exit" simply because it was quicker than waiting. I noticed that my secondary hard drive had something wrong with it. Something about the IDE controller would fail to work (according to the motherboard loading screen after exiting the BIOS).

In the past few hours I was attempting to copy something from my external portable hard drive to my secondary when Windows 7 crashed. After I rebooted I decided to error check the drive (ticking both boxes). I then proceeded to take a nap for an hour and when I came too, the desktop was back to normal with no Error check box. I thought to myself "Oh it must be okay then". I then noticed that the secondary hard drive was not showing up in My Computer.

I rebooted yet again and windows 7 began to crash. Sometimes at the windows 7 loading screen, sometimes upon logging in and other times after a few minutes of logging in. Each time I checked My Computer and although the drive was there, there was no information or little icon showing how much space is left.

After much annoyance I decided to pull the SATA cable out for my second hard drive and boot. Windows 7 loaded sweet as a nut and I have been writing this from the same PC.

Any ideas what's wrong wit... Read more
