Phishing trouble concerns. How do I best prevent them within reasonable costs?

Question: Phishing trouble concerns. How do I best prevent them within reasonable costs?

Yes, I have a Window's Vista Toshiba laptop, Service Pack 2. We have fibre optic service through our local phone company and a router in the house.
I have my browsers set to open to for the sole purpose of phishing prevention. If this is not what I think it is, please correct me on this first point. When I don't have a secure connection, a message pops up saying the connection isn't secure. I've assumed this was phishing. Again, is that a correct assumption? Second, when I have that message appear, often I've disconnected the router and plugged it in later, and for the most part that has 'solved' the connection problems......but, that gets old. Especially since these issues happen often multiple times a day.
My current security is Microsoft Security Essentials, which I know went obsolete with XP, but is still good with Vista (?). I also have as a back up, Emisoft Anti-Malware (free) for scanning purposes. I tried their 'Protection' which is given in the beggining on trial with Security Essentials deleted, but stopped it before it's time trial was up because of how slow it made the computer. Also, I've tried Malwarebytes Real Time Potection with similar results. I then used HitmanPro, first on free trial, than after that was over for awhile, I decided to buy into it's annual cost. HitmanPro, I have found, scare's off the 'phish'er's most of the time when I use the scanner, so I don't have to disconnect the router every time I have an issue. HitmanPro, of course, uses cloud technology, and while that in itself makes me nervous, I feel I can trust them. Cloud tech also doesn't slow the computer.
So, the question.....
How can I prevent phishing without slowing down my computer? I'm not really interested in shelling out more money. It may be little in cost, which may be okay, depending on how little. I've been pleased with HitmanPro so far.

Preferred Solution: Phishing trouble concerns. How do I best prevent them within reasonable costs?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Phishing trouble concerns. How do I best prevent them within reasonable costs?

I forgot to add something that happened today.
I was trying to scare the 'phisher' away by using HitmanPro as I've done before, and noticed in the screen where PUP's appear a very very brief message saying something about SUN CLOUD UPLOADING. Of course, it was so brief, and I wasn't really watching closely anyway, so it may have said something else........I'm just telling what I think I saw. I tried googling that, and come up with zero.

I've received three calls from the same unrecognized number in the past 24 hrs. I did a reverse-lookup on one of the websites, and there were 2 pages of complaints that the people calling from the number basically tried to scam them. Most of them said the people claimed they were from HP. I haven't answered the number, and I won't, but thought it might be helpful to others to post it here, and might help get the number shut down sooner. The scam number is:

I have legitimate mail that comes in and windows mail marks it as phishing, in red! I have added the domain and specific address to the safe senders list, but it continues to happen. Does anyone know how I fix this? Thanks!

Did you try to put the address in your contact book at the website and not one Windows Live?

I would like to recommend this Chrome-only extension for protection against phishing attacks.

The advantage of this extension is that it gives an alert message each time you visit a new website the first time or some sites you have not visited for a long time. The user will then have to decide to proceed or cancel visiting the site.

You can add this to complement the comprehensive Netcraft reporting and protection extension.

Hi there,

I have several concerns regarding my computer and I hope someone can help me out. First off, a few days ago I was looking for the new episode of Lost a few hours after it aired so obviously I could not wait. Stupid me (emphasize on the stupid), I decided to google Lost streams and I just literally clicked on every search until I found something. Lost story short, I found an extremely laggy site that provided HD streams so I clicked on the video, walked away for a good 5 minutes and waited to load. When I returned, my computer was getting absolutely hounded by viruses. A good 20 viruses must have came with error reports everywhere. I didn't learn this until later but they turned off my firewall/virus protection so that's why I kept getting owned. I tried doing a virus scan but it kept freezing and eventually I couldn't open programs anymore (kept saying "program cannot be executed". I tried downloading a different virus program but it wouldn't let me install because I had a previous one that needed to be deleted first and I couldn't.

Anywhoo, my computer was getting into worse condition so I decided to go into Safe Mode and try to figure something out. Once there, I decided to run a virus scan (the one I used at the time was Avira Anti-virus). It came up with 0 viruses detected so I knew something fishy was up. So I decided to do a system restore and hoped for the best. I restored it to a month ago and I when I logged back into Windows I noticed that ... Read more

I keep hearing people who have fairly modern PC's (although perhaps lacking a good graphics card) talking about buying a PS3. I would like to tell them that they should really consider spending $200 to $250 for a new video card and using their PC to play games thereby saving themselves the much larger cost of a PS3.

Is this reasonable advice? If they were to upgrade an Intel P4 (3.2 MHz with adequate memory, hard drive, sound quality, etc.) by buying a fairly good quality video card, would that put the machine into a comparable quality such that it would run most games available for the PC such that it would compare fairly well to those same games running on the PS3?

It doesn't have to be extremely high quality. I'd just like to know if it would be reasonably accurate to say that upgrading a fairly modern PC (with a P4 CPU - not a Celeron) with a good quality video card would put it into roughly the same level of performance for playing games as the PS3.

Answer:Would you consider this advice to be reasonable?

Good Afternoon, Gentlemen,
I am sorely, at least I think so, of the sound advice that you hand out, on a very regular basis.
I have had an Acer Aspire One 722-C62kk with an 11.6” screen and 4GB for a couple of years. And it has done – and is doing – the job I wanted it to do; namely to take on holidays with us so we can keep in touch with friends whilst on the holiday. But we are just back from 2 weeks in Lanzarote and I must admit that I have found it s-l-o-w. I do not know anything about chips and, therefore, would be very grateful if someone could recommend a notebook with a faster chip in it. This is where I will probably annoy some of you: I would like one that is 5 to 10 times faster!! Also I am not looking for a new notebook – these all seem to come with Windows 10 which I do not like – but a second hand one with Windows 7 preferably 64Bit Home Premium or similar with USB 3.0 port(s). I am quite willing to go to £100, but for a good one am willing to stretch up to £200. If a company that trades in second hand notebooks has options and any of you know a reasonably reliable one that would also be helpful.
I know I am being picky, but at my time of life I am getting more and more specific and that is why I am asking you gentlemen.
Any and all – no matter how rude – replies will be very gratefully received.

Hi all,

I'm currently looking into buying a new server for the company I'm interning at. The issue is I'm somewhat clueless about IT in general, so I'm concerned an offer I've received for a Dell PowerEdge T430 server which I've pasted below is a rip off. The price I've been quoted is $4020,10.

Here are the specs:
"Server Dell PowerEdge T430 8B, (1)*Intel Xeon E5-2630v4 Processor (2.2GHz, 10C, 25MB, 8.0GT/s QPI, 85W), 32GB (2x16GB) 2400MHz RDIMM, PERC H330, DVD+/-RW, (2)*1TB SATA 6Gbps 7.2k 3.5" HD Hot Plug (up to 8x3.5"HDD), Broadcom 5720 GbE Dual Port on board, IDRAC8 Ent., (2)*750W, No Rails, 3y NBD"

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Also if it helps the initial uses of the server would be secure data storage, hosting an email service for 12 staff members, and if possible setting up a hybrid disaster recovery solution, for instance linking the service to a cloud based service like Microsoft Azure.

If anyone out there can suggest a cheaper and viable alternative that would be ace!

Best regards,

Question: Reasonable prices?

What would be a reasonable price to "reimage" a machine?
(ie wipe off all the trojans/adware/spyware)

Reimage including databackup and a reinstall of the os and drivers.

Data backup being a loose sense of the term and including just music, photos, documents, email, and favorites, and just to be nice also throwing on a few apps that are essential...itunes, aim, firefox, spybot, antivirus of choice.

I wanted to hear some opinions about the situation in the office I work in.

Recently we changed accounting software and my advice to change to Office 365 was rejected. Still all 15 employees want their emails to be safe and backed up.
Some employees don't delete their emails, so I end up with approximately 10 GB PST-file size per year per user. Of course I split them year by year. The problem is that they want to keep even pst files from 5 or more years ago. Always available. My idea is now, that I make a one time backup copy of recent years and a daily backup of the actual year.
I made some tries already with EaseUS. But I'm not satisfied.
I'd prefer not to schedule it and leave it up to the employee to decide when to make the backup. So, let's say the employee leaves earlier for some reason why leaving the PC on until 7 pm or so? Also a power cut could prevent that scheduled backup entirely from happening.
Here's a list of what I need the backup software to be able to do:

- Start the whole backup process with a double-click on an icon (on the desktop). EaseUS needs more steps incl. always having to set the Shutdown option manually.
- On the destination file storage or NAS I want to overwrite the previous file, not to create version after version. Or even better: Create a new version but delete the old version afterwards. PSTs are really a hard case since you can't really make incremental backups. I also doubt that some employees will understa... Read more

Noticed today that switches with 10 GbE ports are starting to become quite low in price on eBay. Is this a sign that the price is finally starting to move or are these switches junk, lacking features or not usable to attach a server or two and start playing with the speeds?

I subscribe to Norton 360 but have got the trojan Antivirus XP 2008 with its annoying porn popups and messages. Via the chat facility, Norton advisors have removed part of the problem remotely but the popups have come back and other irritations, like slow running remain. They have now escalated my call to their virus specialist and want to charge me £70 for a detailed consultation plus check of the PC and clean up. Am I being reasonable thinking that Norton 360 should have stopped the trojan in the first place and it's a bit much having to pay them to clean up. The adviser was quite aggressive saying that I should have this done straight away otherwise I might spread the virus on the internet and my ISP will cut me off.I'd be grateful for views on Norton's stance.

I have four rather old HDDs that are either not recognized by the system or that cause computer shut down when connected.

Is it reasonable to attempt to repair these? It is my understanding that the majority of all HDD failures are electrical and not mechanical. If this is true, then I would conclude that most problems are caused by the replaceable control board on the HD.

BTW I have a circuit board on order to attempt the repair of a 250GByte Seagate HD (a Barracuda 7200.10).

This HD seems to be an ideal candidate for home repair because it immediately shuts down the computer when power is applied. There is a direct short from the HDs' 5 volt input pin to ground. That short circuit exists even when the board is removed from the HD.

Obtaining an exact replacement seems to be the trick. I 'think' I have done that.

Answer:Is It Reasonable/Sensible to Attempt to Repair a HDD

It's not as simple as replacing the PCB on most modern drives, you may also have to move the original ROM chip or firmware that contains the specific drive parameters to the new PCB. Unlike older drives, new drives are all slightly different and unique. With the 7200.10 a PCB swap may work because its an older drive.

This is NOT a serious problem, just more of an annoyance which is intriguing me.
With 4gb ram, a reasonable dual processor and graphics card, one would expect a reasonably good performance whatever the case.
My automatic startup consists of just Avast AV, Java, and Malwarebytes although l also get additional icons on the taskbar for the Network and Sharing Center and Action Center.
I use Firefox as my main browser.
I also use SuperAntiSpyware, CCleaner, and Defraggler reasonably frequently, so l know that my system is clear of any junk, malware, spyware, and that no viruses are present.
I fire the system up in the morning, bring up Firefox and all is fine, and reasonably quick.
Do a fair amount of downloading using the MiPony download manager to access rapidshare files, but with my crap connection, the max download speed seems to hover around the 280kbs mark.
I may also have two FF sessions on the go, as well as the downloading, so whatever l do after that seems to really slow the system down.
I have even run ConvertX at the same time as all of the above and the system came to a near grinding halt.
Now l know that all of the above are processor/ram hungry but surely with my specs the computer should more than cope?
Maybe l'm missing something obvious or my dual processor system just cannot cope with more than two ram hungry programs running at the same time.
Has anyone got any ideas or do l just have to live with it.

Is this a reasonable graphics card?

ATI RADEON 9800 Pro 256Mb AGP

It will be used with a Gigabyte 8VM800PMD-775 mobo

on a 2.8ghz celeron with 1gb Ram, 200gb hdd

Answer:Is this a reasonable graphics card?

How much does it cost?
I recommend a 6600GT video card. It should costly almost the same, and you get a lot more performance.

The two bad things are these:

a) You must have a good, quality 300-350 power supply, from a good, well-known manufacturer, with at least 20 A on the 12V rail, in order to have a stable computer.

b) The performance of a 9800 PRO or a 6600GT will be limited by your current CPU (is it a Celeron D or a Celeron?).

Good luck!

A long tale of woe that ends with some questions. Please bare with me in the background explanation.

For over a year I've been having occasional flurries of crashes, hangs and (rarely) BSODs. Months would go by with no problem, then dozens of crashes or hangs in a week. The event logs and rare dumps have not been helpful. People here said it sounded like hardware problem, but no diagnostics I ran could find a problem.

I took it to a pc repair shop which could find no hardware problem (and of course it would not crash or hang for them). The suggested (as did people on this forum) that it probably was ZoneAlarm Internet Security. They installed the Kaspersky Internet Security product (for a fee, of course) and said that should fix the problems. 2 days later it froze 3 times and did automatic reboots 5 times.

I took it back. It still wouldn't crash or hang for them. They said Windows probably needed to be reinstalled - that my update from Win7 Home to Pro corrupted something. Rather than mess up the installation again I asked them to do it (for a fee, of course).

During their attempts to reinstall Windows it started crashing for them. They succeeded on their 3rd attempt, ran some more tests, checked the configuration, and found problems with the ram. They said ram I had was incompatible with the mother board and buggy, but the problems could not be detected by the diagnostics. They also said they had to reinstall Windows a 4th time because the 3rd reinstallation ... Read more

Answer:Reasonable explanation for crashes?

OCZ is high quality, but it is also one of the least compatible memories on the market (meaning it works properly with the fewest hardware configurations)
I use it personally and have for years with no complaint. ...and certainly without the problems you describe, though I always verify the motherboard/ram compatibility before I purchase a motherboard.

If the ram is actually bad it can cause any number of seemingly unrelated problems and errors. Since basically everything processes through the ram and it can be only one stick or one specific memory address on a stick that actually causes the problem. It's possible this bad address can go for months without being used until a specific set of circumstances pops up.

Ok, I am basically new here and have a system I built in the middle of 2007. I am trying to see if it is viable to upgrade any of the components to make it a little more competitive for the rest of this year, but I don't know that there is much I can do with it without buying multiple components.

I have:

MSI AM2 Athlon 64/X2, PC6400 mem. capable motherboard
4600+ Athlon X2
NVIDIA 9600GT 512mb
2 gb PC6400 DDR2

I am currently running 64 bit Windows 7, and despite 2gb of memory it runs well.

Basically, I don't know if there is much that can be done with this. It's kind of stuck where it is. I could get a little faster dual core X2 processor, but I don't know that it would make much of a difference. Obviously a quad core CPU would require a new motherboard and CPU, so might as well do that with a whole new computer build. I could upgrade to 4gb of dual channel memory, but I don't know that games/programs would utilize it enough to be worth it. Video card wise, I have a 19" 1280 x 1024 monitor, so I whether or not a better video card would get a huge difference in framerate at that resolution I'm not sure.

I am primarily looking at this in regards to games like Bioshock 2, etc. coming out this year. I would just like to run those newer games a little better for this year until I anticipate building a new system in 2011. I have heard a lot of people say that 4gb of memory isn't totally used by most applications yet. I have heard that un... Read more

Currently I am unemployed and so when I found out that my PC broke (this is a friend's) I was devastated to realize that Windows XP (Pro or HE) both range around $100 for the standard full edition. I am currently running it off of Bart PE but that isn't much help because I can't even view pics or access the internet. My other friend told me however that you can get Windows XP as cheap as $70 for the stripped down, "No Manual, No Colorful Box," edition. Problem is... I can't find this mythical store/site. I am trying to find a touchscreen monitor that is actually priced reasonably. It needs to be between 10 and 12 inches and the pixel resolution needs to be at least 1024x768.

I can't find any for a fair price. They make all kinds of good ones though... for $250 and up! They can't be THAT expensive since you can buy android tablets for like $150. Even mouser doesn't carry touchscreen LCD panels anymore that have a greater resolution than 640x480.

I have managed to find ONE that has a somewhat reasonable price but it's sold by a shady looking seller. Half of the reviewers didn't receive a working unit and the other half did.

I call ******** on these prices. They don't cost that much to produce. Something like that shouldn't cost more than $100. I'm not willing to spend more than $150 on a touchscreen monitor unless the resolution is 1280x720 or greater and even then I'm not spending more than 175-200.

So where is a place you can buy these from that are priced reasonably? If there are none, can I buy a $100-$150 android tablet just for the LCD panel, take it apart and somehow re wire everything up for use with a PC?

i have been told 1155 is going away, but i was told that just under a year ago and its not proving to be true. i just came into a little extra money, and am considering the best mother board i could get my hands on for 1155.

this is what i am looking at. and im hoping to get some suggestions and hopfuly hear from someone who has it- - ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Answer:help picking the best reasonable 1155 mobo available

Eventually, all sockets go away, but I haven't heard anything particular about 1155. Are you mistaking that for 1156, which is about gone?

As long as you have a good brand and a little bit of luck, I'd just shop on the basis of desire features and price/support.

What does "best" mean in this context?

That particular board is certainly more than you need for most purposes and would be a waste of money for a typical installation. But you may need each and every one of its features. I don't know.

I have a very annoying issue wherein the small rubber V-shaped or triangular pegs attached to the base of the extended battery of my U150 have come off; so now the laptop wobbles when I type. I've called the service center (Philippines not India), they were very nice and courteous, but had no replacement part number so they cannot replace the part even if I am under warranty! How ridiculous is that?!?! It would be so easy to mail me a pair of pegs and I would simply superglue it on the base. What they offered is even more absurd! They want me to give them a $90+ deposit to send them my whole battery pack (that is working just fine) which they are willing to replace in order to get the new legs on it. We're talking about a pair of pegs worth no more that 25-US-cents!!! Does anyone have any solutions? Or is there some other mystical resource to get these rubber pegs replaced? This issue has been going on for two months, and Lenovo has not replied, emailed, nor called as promised by the customer service receptionist who said they would refer my claim to Lenovo.

My nephew suggested recently that I buy some extra memory for my Dell Dimensiion 8250 computer, which is a couple of years old. Knowing that I have Rambus RD-RAM, he searched the Net and told me RD-RAM was both harder to find and more expensive than he expected.

He went to PrimeWatch and found only two websites which had RD-RAM available. Then he went to eBay and told me I could pay $400 for 1G of CD1066 RD-RAM or $256 for 1G of PC 800 RD-RAM.

I have two slots of 256 RD-RAM -- PC 1066, unless I'm mistaken -- which means I have two open slots. My nephew told me I could fill the two open slots with 512 PC 1066, which would give me 1.5 G total. Or, he said, my PC could hold up to 2 G of PC 800 RD-RAM. (All of this terminology is new to me, but my nephew appears to understand it quite well.)

I remember hearing a while back that the price of memory was dropping rapidly, but my nephew told me that seems to have changed. Is it possible that I could find better prices for RD-RAM than those shown on eBay?

I have Comcast cable. The Motorola Surfboard modem is connected to my desktop via Ethernet cable. I occasionally have to work with friend's laptops, and need to connect to the Web wirelessly, so am considering getting a wireless router. Trouble is, I can't find much info on the Web that tells me what I need, and prices go from $25 to $1200. I figure I only need something very simple, since I have no home network or multiple computers throughout the house.

So, can anyone recommend a good and relatively inexpensive router? Review in PC World liked the Belkin N, but have no idea if that's suitable or overkill or what.

The only thing I can think of is I had some wiring work done to an electrical outlet. Since then, it started requiring power reboots during the day (due to losing a signal); then within the week (yesterday), the lights are not working correctly.

Hi guys!!

Okay, my camcorder is a Panasonic GS-150 (I bought it 1 year ago and still not for sure if that was a good purchase or not, but oh well i'm stuck with it now) and I mostly use it to make movies w/friends and family. I write screenplays and direct them, act in them, what not and I'm hoping to finally upgrade to a better video editing software besides Windows Movie Maker. Now, I have no big complaints about WMM, its been very kind to me and user friendly, but I've way over-used all the transitions and video effects they have to offer. Also, my ideal software would have the ability to put a clip on top of a clip. I don't even know if that's possible, but it sounds like a neat idea to me sense I don't have a green screen handy! I am just a meager wanna-be M. Night Shyamalan here My budget is minimal and I'm hoping not to exceed $80.

I need to replace a TP-Link N600 router that is constantly dropping G-wifi. The N seems stable enough but TP-Link customer disservice is working at it's peak. Totally hopeless. I have been trying to get them to to take it back for warranty-repairs and all they keep telling me to do is update the firmware.

I had done that before I even contacted them the first time. I am now using some of their Beta firmware and still no change. I have had it with TP-Link.

So, looking for 4 x Gigabit LAN, G and N wifi at 450 to 600 Gb. An AC-wifi might be nice, but when N is working right, it does all I need. I still need G for my windows phone. {sigh}

I have just tried Zyxel, Edimax and Netgear. Returned them all as the TP-Link when running right had much better power output on both G and N ate distances. Linksys, not even slightly interested in, so what's left? If a Buffalo, I'd want a non-DD-Wrt version. DD-Wrt is great but too time consuming to configure.

Anyone with personal experience of a router they love that doesn't cost a $100+, care to chime in here.

Answer:Decent Router at reasonable price? NOT TP-Link

I got a little-known Router from Western Digital [yeah, the hard drive company] over a year and a half ago, cost $60. When I first got it I'd have to turn the Wi-Fi off [switch on the front] about once a week to re-establish it. After about a month I got a firmware update for it and haven't had a problem since. It's been running 24/7 since 9/11 but we had a transformer blow down the road that day and were without power 6AM until about 7PM that day. Didn't help to also have 10" of snow.

I've set up D-Link and Netgear Routers and haven't had call-backs on them yet.

Pulling my hair out here...

I just got a new monitor, and while installing that accidentally uninstalled the network card. Whoops. Talked to tech support and they said I had to do a reinstall of Windows to get it back, pretty much. So I did, checking "keep files". All went well, until I tried to get into my files. I used to share this computer with others so all of my files under "My Documents" were unshareable under the old system - I'm assuming that's why, when I tried to get to *my* user data, it kept telling me no. After some searching, I found a webpage telling me to reboot in safe mode, go into the folder properties, and reset the owner of those files to my new profile. I did, and everything was restored - except that the files in My Pictures and My Music are all still unaccessible. I can get to them, I can view them, the properties show that they have sizes which seem reasonable for full, normal files - but when I open any of my photos I get nothing - in the Windows Picture and Fax viewer, for instance, I get "no preview available". I've tried renaming the files, moving them, copying them, e-mailing them - nothing. The music files are the same - look normal, but when I try and play them they open up as a 0 second music file. Name and info is available, but no music.

In short: any help vastly appreciated. This is the second time in two years I've lost my vacation photos, last year my camera got stolen Maybe I need to ... Read more

I essentially skipped Vista completely (bought it with the hardware, installed it, then discarded it) and started with the 7000 beta. Am currently toying with 7077 on a new, 3-week-old monster machine that needs to shift into productive use very soon.

Moving the "Documents and Settings" folder was easy back in XP days. It appears to be a lot more complicated now. However, after a bit of reading, I've come up with the following:
Clean install (in this case, 7077 x64) as user 'username'
Enable 'Administrator' account
Log out of 'username' and log into 'Administrator'
Continue with computer setup using the 'Administrator' account
Delete both the account and files for 'username'
Hack the registry to alter the location for new user accounts
-- [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList]
-- Replace '%SystemDrive%\Users' with 'D:\Users' for the 'ProfilesDirectory' key
Create a new account for 'username' with admin privileges which appears as D:\Users\username\...
Log out of the 'Administrator' account (leaving it active and located in the C:\Users folder)
Log into the new 'username' admin account and go about business as usual.
(There will be four additional non-admin accounts created on this machine -- all of them located in the D:\Users folder.)
My question is: Does this seem a valid approach to separating the Users folder from the system drive? Or, am I setting myself up for problems?

Right now with the current set of GPOs (like three dozen or so) and configuration it takes approximately 1-3 minutes for users to login. Our old computer system with terminal servers would take 2-3 minutes for users to login, or if about the same time -- there were other issues such as horribly under-specced and overloaded servers with 40 users per terminal server.

With a brand new set of GPOs (about a dozen or less) and OU structure that I carefully made and designed after spending several hours analyzing the existing GPOs and OU structure, it takes on average 16 seconds to login (best being 12 seconds, worst being 22 seconds). This uses VMware View Persona management storing profiles at \\srv-persona1\EXP_Profiles$\%username%. This is currently not being used by our North American environment.

If we use a persistent local profile through VMware View, login time is 2 seconds flat. Our Asian environment of at least 100 users uses this + the brand new set of GPOs and OU structure I created, but without VMware View Persona management (again -- persistent local profile).

At minimum, my supervisor is wanting to get the login time below 10 seconds -- aiming for 2 seconds, while using Persona management. He told me he would like to get rid of all of the GPOs (or as much as possible). I responded saying this is unrealistic and wrong, defeating the purpose of why GPOs as a feature exists and would also result in higher maintenance time and more frequent reprovi... Read more

My Computer recently broke down to an irreparable level, this could not have come at a worse time since I will be cash strapped for the next 6 or so months. Hi all,
I am on dial up connection now, i pay $20 a month for unlimited use to another internet provider on top of my normal Telstra bill and its been ok as far as $$ & speed for what i have been using it for, but my new computor will have a DVD & CD in it and i would like to be able to sometimes download movies and songs with it and the dialup i think will be far to slow for that type of use.
Its not only that, but when i use the internet on the same line as phone calls, i am missing a lot of calls and others in the house are getting pretty irrritated with me being always on the net.
I am a bit restricted as far as money goes because i am on a diability pension,
so i am looking for a reasonable priced provider that will suit my needs without going to overboard with the prices and will keep the phone clear for all other normal phone calls.
I have been looking at a few differant deals but i see that if you go over a certain amount of m'bytes they get stuck into you for excess, which looks like a bit of a trap to me.
I would even be happy with normal dialup speeds during the day [ when i can get on it] and downloading stuff at off peak times or during the nights.
Or am i asking for to much for to little?
Thanks in advance for any idea's.

Answer:Any Aussies know of a reasonable priced cable connection provider

Try Optus ADSL I think they have packages that include your phone and some free local calls. I'm not sure about ADSL but with cable when you exceed your limit they don't charge extra they just limit you to dialup speed.

On every occasion, I have made a point of thanking those members who have given me advice and ticked the resolved box when my problem has been solved. On Sunday there was one of those rare occasions where a thread was on a subject I felt I could offer some useful information on. This was a thread regarding which broadband supplier to use. Having recently migrated to broadband and being very satisfied with my provider, I added this information to the thread. Another 15 members also took time to contribute their advice. I followed this thread to see how others thought about providers and to see what conclusions the originator came to. Since the original posting, the originator has failed to feedback to all of us who made the effort to offer him/her help. The resolved box also remains unticked - does this mean the member still requires more imput from other members of the forum? It costs nothing other than a little time to send a brief resonse thanking contributers for their help, and then ticking the resolved box so as not to waste the time of more members.

Hey I'm looking for an entry level printer (100-200$) and have found this Brother printer on what looks like a great discount:

Brother HL-3040CN Color Laser Network Printer - 17ppm Mono - 17ppm Color - 2400 x 600 dpi - USB, Fast Ethernet - PC, Mac...from $289 to $129.

I was looking at ink jet printers because the toner cartridges are cheaper, ink cartridge are $65 canadian for this laser printer. Wow that's a lot. But I thought maybe the laser printer cartridges put significantly more pages or hold more ink than the ink jet ones?
Or is laser more expensive because of the quality of the print? I don't want a laser if I'm going to end paying more per page than ink jet.

Also ink-jet's are always printer/scanner/coppier/fax...all for $60.
How can it be any good at printing when it does all that for so little? I can't help but feel skeptical.
Thanks for any feedback...the sale on this ends in two days!

Answer:laser vs ink jet costs?

I can't speak to the cost of laser vs inkjet because I haven't owned a laser printer in ages, but I can speak to the quality of current multifunction inkjet printers. They are fantastic. I have an Epson multifunction printer/scanner/copier/CD printer, and it's output in all three modes is fantastic. You'd be surprised how far they've come over the years. One caveat though. If you buy the cheapest model, you'll get what you paid. In other words, spend the 129 or whatever (but not 60) for a multifunction unit and you'll be a happy camper. I highly recommend the current Epsons.

I have a question to ask, hopefully I am in the right place. My sister sent me an email stating that someone had approached her on finishing a website that another person started. I believe that this website will have about 80 links from his to their personal pages. She wanted to know how much should she bill this person for the completion of the site. I have no idea, hopefully someone here can help her with this question.

Answer:web page costs

If this is going to be a straight-forward "brochure" style website, meaning no cgi, perl, databases, just many pages connected with links, then average I have seen is about $20-$30 per page worked.

Over here, going rate for a free-lancer to build a site is anywhere from £500 for a very small and basic site, to over £5000 for a larger, but still basic site.

From looking at various sites, I see that the ink is the most expensive part of printing but I can't find any place which will show me the best deal in the UK for an all-in-one printer and the printing/ink costs.

There are soooo many all-in-ones out there I just can't see spending any more days trying to compare running costs!

Any info or links would be greatly appreciated!!!

I'm invited to BBB/Broadband and then to hear anything I'm invited to load "Real" I about £10 a month ?I already have Win Player so do I need more.Any views or help would be appreciated.

Answer:BBC and Real costs?

I'm not sure where the £10 a month comes into it.The vast majority of the BBC's streaming output is in RealPlayer format, therefore to decode the stream of data from the BBC into sound, vision etc, you need to download and install the RealPlayer program. There are several versions of this - you only need the free one.

Hi all.I'm self employed and do a reasonable amount of printing at home on an HP psc2110, I do anything from 60-100 sheets per week, most of it is black text. I have a brand new W530 with the 500 GB HD -- 445 GB actual total space in C: ("Windows7_OS"), including about 85 GB of OS, pre-installed applications, and Lenovo bloat-ware). I plan to create a separate user-data partition by stealing space from the OS partition, call it E:, and to re-direct user Documents, Pictures, etc. directories plus the Outlook PST file there. Thus C: will be reserved mainly for Windows, Page File, Crash Dump, Restore Points, and new software installation. Any thoughts about a reasonable division of drive space between these two partitions? Coming from Windows XP 32bit on a much smaller HD, I have little idea what to expect in terms comfortable space requriements for Windows 7 64bit. (I realize I can re-size the partitions later, but it seems best to start with realistic allocations...) -- JCW2

Answer:What is a Reasonable Tradeoff Between System and Data Space in Windows 7 64bit?

It is hard to comment without some idea how the machine will be used. Some applications are not very well behaved and install on the c: drive regardless of what you do. Some functions, like the briefcase functions in windows 7 are harder to get off c:, although it can be done. (I got it right the second time I tried) If you share files using briefcase, you end may up with most of your data on c:. I decided I wanted to boot from an SSD, but I needed more data, so I put in a 256GB mSATA drive and moved my boot partition there. I used my entire HD for data. That worked out well for me.

Received computer intact yesterday. Today it will not power up! Ok, I know this computer to be solid. Usually, I've fixed or repaired my other computers BUT I have no idea about electricals. Tested HP Pavilion 780 with power connections on my main computer so I know its not a question of connections. Is there a switch besides the on/off button? Haven't connected monitor but have never had to in the past with other computers. Am debating whether to have serviced at PC World or maybe High St. Computer repair unless someone has a clue to what "ails" this computer. What does PC World charge? Any advise? Thanks.

Answer:Pc World Repair? Costs?

Personally, I wouldn't trust PC World to repair my stapler, let alone a PC.

bout a month ago, I got fed up with my printer 'rattling', my pens & bits and pieces on the shelf, so I put it on a piece of 3" foam (Old Cushion cut to size). This not only stopped the rattle but seems to have increased the printers performance. As far as I can tell, when the printer does a carraige return, the printer shakes slightly and this seems to have effect making the ink in the cartrige spread accross, instead of just taking it from one section. When I started the cartridge was showing 75%, it is now showing Full, and printing as well as when it was new.

Answer:Save Printing Costs

Seems like we need a section entitled "Handy Hints"! Thanks for the info...

PC100 ram will work fin in a system that needs pc66 - right? If so, how come PC66 ram is more expensive? Why don't people just buy PC100 ram and use it? This assumption is correct - right?

Answer:PC66 and PC100 - costs...???

Because of a lot of pc66 ram being simms, not dimms, which are obsolete.

Like this one here:-

I mean loking at it's Core Clock of 500Mhz it's seems SLOWER then the other cards around like the 8800GT Alpha dog extreme which has a core clock of above 650. And it costs about $100 Less!!!!
What makes this XFX 8800 GTS so expensive? what is the benfit of getthing this card? Besides the 640MB?
Or is the price difference just because of the memory?
Please enlighten me in this. Thank you.

It's expensive because it was costly to produce before they decided to stop its production. The current GTS being produced in the 512MB one.

At the minute im saving to replace my dead gpu in my pc, on my wages it will take 5 to 6 months, after that i want to save up for a tablet, since i am writting programs for windows in my free time i would want a windows tablet BUT where ever i look they seem to be 200 to 400 vs android ones that can be as little as 50. Am i looking in the wrong places or are windows tablets just that expensive?

Answer:windows tablet costs?

Windows tablets come in all shapes, sizes, and prices.
I don't know pounds (?) but here in the US, the prices range from as low as $80 new to $1000+.
For the most part, you get what you pay for.
Android tablets are probably cheaper since there's a lower spec floor.

Hello to this site. I have only had my Acer Tablet for 7 mths and the touch screen is not working. Of course it needs to be shipped to Mississauga, ON in Canada as I live in Canada(MB). Specially packed to protect it and they only want it sent by UPS or Fedex or some shipping company. So went to do that until they told me how much it was to cost..$44 and some cents to ship...this is ridiculous. Yeah good for buisiness owners as they could just use it as a buisiness expense but as a little guy we just keep on paying!I asked the chat guy about reimbursing the shipping costs and they said they would NOT. It still is on warranty!Any suggestions?

Answer:Reimbursing shipping costs?

I've sent you a PM, I'd like to see if there is anything that I can do for you regarding this.

Ok here Im asking for your thoughts on your Isp ,in view of changing Isp yet again due to lack of dialup I currently pay £8:99 monthly prepaid subscription 6 months in advance the service comes with a 15/1 contention ratio, however this at times is more like 400/1 as I cannot reliably dial up at any time i choose im looking to find a decent service ..Note Broad band isnt an option it simply isnt available..Ive done searches for various Isp's but would rather go on you the isp user for the real picture...

Answer:ISP'S genuine anytime and costs?

Like it or not AOL are the only company to offer an always on dial up service (well for a reasonalbe price) If you cant get broadband then this is a viable option, no cut offs and no monthly limits.Oh and it wont posess your PC and turn it in to some kind of mental demon either.

Get your Lifetime License for MBAM now as the costs will be rising soon .......
Just released details of the latest version and prices -
Quote from the boss, Marcin Kleczynski @ MBAM Forums ..............
I'm very excited to be able to tell you that in a few months, we'll be launching Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0 with a completely redesigned and easier to use UI and massive engine improvements under the hood.
We'll also be moving to a subscription licensing model, $24.95 per year. As more and more people have come to rely on us for malware protection and cleanup, our costs in bandwidth, hosting fees, infrastructure, salaries of our researchers, QA department, and more have grown immensely. Though our company is about more than just making money, we are a company and we do have to make money to pay our staff to continue doing what they love, which is fighting malware. The subscription model will help us to be sustainable for the future while staying true to our roots that we will always make malware cleanup free for everyone.
We will continue to honor existing lifetime licenses, meaning any users that already have a lifetime license for (Versions) 1.x will continue to have a lifetime license for (Versions) 2.x.
We'll be offering a few thousand more lifetime licenses during launch as well. On top of all of that, new subscription licenses will be valid for 3 PCs, not just 1.
The 3-license program would work out to ... Read more

This is a guide to avoid breaking your screen.
I was putting my stuff inside the car after some days on a Greek island.
When I finally got to the port I realized.....
I did not have my G20..
Coming back to the hotel there it was lying just outside the parking area. And the funny part is...I RUNNED IT OVER WITH MY JEEP.
So now I have some big white lines over the screen but the beast is still working.

Any clues how much can it cost???
Just to let u know I previously owned a SP20-S203 and when I replaced the screen, I paid 1000Euro.It was again broken by mistake (I have a problem with 17" screens I guess :)
So... 2 out of 2.
Does anybody know where can I buy a steel TFT??

Good Summer Everybody :)

Answer:Broken Display on G20 – How many costs a new one?

Hello Kozach

I am very sorry about that but I assume that displays on your notebooks should be covered by insurance separately. ;)

Sorry but you must contact service partner and ask them how much it can costs. You are right about steel display. It will be the right solution for you.

Good luck Kozach and be careful with your next unit! :)

It seems to be that Adobe/Macromedia Flash Suite costs pretty much for a single software product. The basic version is about 400 and the pro 800 dollars. That being said, I suspect that most of the flash presentations found on the websites, even the commercial ones, are made with pirated versions of the software suite.

I'd like to construct some Flash annoyances, but I really don't want to pay that much. Is there any legal way to get the Flash suite with more reasonable price for home user? I did not find any older versions from the local retailers.

Adobe Photoshop Elemets costs about 100 dollars. That much I am willing to pay for a good and solid software for non-commercial use.

I am looking for a new printer. Manufacturers always quote cartridge life in pages at 5% coverage. How can I find out (using Photoshop, or some other program) what percentage of each of CMY and K is in a page? I can convert a document to an image file, and open it in an image editor, but can't then find a way to get percentages.I'm sure it must be possible because some printers include software to do print job accounting, including such figures. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.Gary

Answer:Printer running costs

When looking at Manufacturers quoted out puts, it is always wise to deduct around a third from these. The reason being is that when they conducts these tests, they only print a draft letter of maybe two addresses, and a couple of paragraphs of text. This inevitably does not cover half the page.
