sony vaio vgn-nr330E won't boot to any external drive, or internal optical drive

Question: sony vaio vgn-nr330E won't boot to any external drive, or internal optical drive

I have a sony vaio VGN-NR330E that I have just bought a new hard drive for (doing a fresh install of vista) and the internal optical drive spins up but won't boot off the cd, and after a blinking cursor says O/S not found, so i tried it on an external usb drive, and it didnt boot, same black screen followed by O/S not found. I tried booting from a knoppix live cd that worked on another computer and it wouldnt boot either. I have no idea of any what to do, since it wont boot off of an external HDD internal optical drive, external optical drive, and any help is greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: sony vaio vgn-nr330E won't boot to any external drive, or internal optical drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: sony vaio vgn-nr330E won't boot to any external drive, or internal optical drive

What are the current boot options...as set in your BIOS?

http://www.ehow.com/how_8022156_change-bios-settings-sony-vaio.html

If not listed as the first boot option...it's unlikely that the system would boot from either drive.

Sony VAIO VGN-NR330e laptop.

I cleaned the keyboard right before installing Windows 7 on it. Now, the keyboard is acting very strange. I don't know if cleaning it messed up something sensitive and now the hardware itself is shot, or if it's a driver, or a flat out compatibility issue with Windows 7.

I tend to believe it is not the hardware itself, as when I pop off the problem keys and put them back on, they respond normally. But only to a light touch, not if you hold it depressed.

Then again, even when I get the entire keyboard responding and typing what it should, it is completely messed up all over again upon restart. What on earth???

I have an ASUS G50VT notebook that is 3 weeks old and I am running Vista Home Premium 64bit for my OS. My ODD was working jsut fine, now I can not read anything. In Explorer I can see the drive, but it does not read anything. I have unistalled the drive several times and rebooted, but did not work, I have also tried to edit the registry, but lower filters and upper filters are not listed to delete. After reading some other forums and also talking to Geek Squad they all said that my drive is bad and needs to be replaced.

With that thought in mind I have an older external NEC dvd burner that I hooked up to my new computer and the nc does the same thing with this drive, but when I hook it up to my old notebook (dell inspiron 1150 using XP) it works fine. This leads me to believe that possibly my problem is with Vista, but I do not know what to do. Can anyone help me please.

Thank You
Gene

Answer:Internal optical drive nor external NEC dvd burner functioning with new notebook

Gene have a look in Device Manager at your dvd drive and if it mentions Code 39 (under the General tab) have a look here,

PC Hell: How to Fix Error Code 39 with DVD or CD-ROM drive in Windows XP/Vista

If it lists something other than Code 39, please post back what it says.

Hey i was hoping someone could help. I bought a Sony Vaio External Hard drive about 6 months ago, and after using it fine for about 2 weeks and storing lots of things on it, it stopped working. It connects via usb to mini usb, then when plugged in, it registers with the computer that it recognises the hardware, then when trying to open it, it doesn't work. It didn't cost me a lot of money, but i was speaking to a friend the other day who spent a lot more who has a differen one (not Sony) and has the same problem. Anyone know of how to fix this or is it a no go!!!??

Try putting your usb dvd in the 1st usb port at rear of PC (has to be 2.0 of course) and don't have any flash drives or other usb devices plugged in and try it

Hello, I'm trying to boot a Linux-based OS from an external optical drive. Using the UEFI boot options menu, I've set the boot order so that the regular OS boot manager appears last, but I still cannot get the other OS to boot. I have the external drive connected by a cord to the USB port on the notebook. Legacy boot is disabled, boot from CD/DVD is enabled, secure boot is enabled. The external drive is working-- in fact, its light blinks when I restart the computer. The DVD works on my desktop too. Here's what I've been doing: Restart the computer. Hit 'esc', then 'F9'. At this point it only gives me two options, but both are for the Windows OS. It doesn't even list "internal drive", "external drive", or "USB" at this point. Agh. Please help. Thank you.

Hi all, I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. Its optical drive has gone bad, and won't play any discs whatsoever.. it will just keep on reading it, and ultimately throws the disc out.

Now, I want to reinstall the OS on the laptop via an installation disc. I have an external USB optical drive, and it works well otherwise... but, the problem is, that the laptop won't recognize it as a boot device.

It does not recognize it as a CD/DVD boot device, nor as a USB one. I have done the proper settings for the boot order in the BIOS... no go.

Any ideas on how to make the laptop recognize the external optical drive as boot device, and boot the disc from it?

I've started a new thread because at least one of my issues (no recovery partition) was resolved by running a full recovery with the discs provided by Lenovo.  I had two issues when I called Support:  1) I had no recovery partition and 2) I could not boot with my empty (no disc) external optical drive attached to my computer.  Both items were, according to Lenovo, to be resolved by running recovery.  No such luck! After 2+ hours on the phone with Support, the "supervisor" told me the problem could be with my hard drive (160GB) and upgraded RAM (2GB).  I'm not technical in this way and don't know if this is possible.  I bought my S10e from an authorized dealer.  I know he upgraded the RAM but can't be sure about the hard drive (not sure if it was factory installed or not). Anyway.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer:S10e can't boot w/external optical drive attached

Go into the BIOS configuration and set the hard drive as the first boot device. Post the results.

I'd like to reinstall Windows 98 on a Sony Vaio N505VE, but it requires a Sony CD drive. When I purchased the laptop 4 years ago, it came with a Backpack CD-Rom Drive. A few months ago, I researched online and I seem to recall a website that gave instructions on how to reinstall Win98 without the Sony drive, but I can't find it anymore. Does anyone know how I can do this?

In other words, when booting VAIO before going straight into Windows XP I'd like to have the black screen offering me the OS selection.

Answer:Internal optical drive for notebook pc

Churin, Most of the internal dvd drives are pretty interchangeable with one another. They do have two models with different electrical connections. I would take the old one out and take a look at it and then decide if they look identical in electrical connections, they you should be good to go.

Hi there hormel,

I was also unable to find a blu ray drive on Lenovo.com so I don't have a definite answer for you. I do have some helpful resources though: Replacement for Lenovo ThinkPad W530 SATA BD-RE Blu-Ray Drive Burner Player

That's an internal drive so I don't know if it would work out for you. There was also an interesting discussion on this thread:
Is there an internal Blu-ray drive for T410, T510, W510?

Finally, there is another semi-relative discussion here: Ultrabay blu-ray burner at Lenovo.com

Although these don't specifically address an external blu ray drive, there may be some helpful information there.

Recently I sent my Sony Vaio PCG-FXA36 laptop off to be repaired under warranty through best buy. My hard drive was making loud clicking sounds every so often, loud enough to make me jump when I was typing a paper late at night. Also the combo drive was not reading dvd-r's and when I would try and play an audio cd or a DVD the sound would be stuttery and kind of digitized. So I finally caved and sent it off to get it repaired, knowing that it was going to take like three weeks to get the drives replaced.
I finally got it back and I was a happy camper because they had replaced the 20gig HD with a new 30gig Samsung spinpoint which is extremely quiet and, well, 10gig's bigger. Also it had a new combo drive. When I got it back there was absolutely nothing on the HD and I ran the system restore disks. When the computer shipped it had two partitions, I took this opportunity to set it up with only one. About a day after I had it all set up and had installed stuff like McAffe, Word, and Zone Alarm it started to freeze completely at start up. I ran the system restore again, and now my combo drive is not showing up in My Computer about 70% of the times I turn it on. I tried putting in a bootable disk and it started from the disk about half the time. Even when it is not showing up in windows the drive has power. All the guys a best buy are saying is they are going to send it off for 2-3 weeks again. Any thoughts on simple fixes, or other suggestions?

Answer:Dissapearing optical drive on Vaio laptop & Best Buy's ineptitude

unfortunalty, you are kind of stuck on this. the only real option here is to open the case and then find the missing screw that Sony forgot to put back in. at least that is what I'm suspecting. Problem is, as soon as you open the case, you are in violation of the warrenty terms for the machine. I do that stuff all the time and am certified by IBM and Dell so it's ok for me, but unless you feel ok with it and don't damage anything while your doing it, I would just say to take it back to them... Explain that this is not something you are going to wait 2/3 weeks for and that you want it done yesterday. This came back with a problem that wan't there before, so they broke something in prossess. it's their (sony) responsibility to get it back without a problem after sending it in to fix one.

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Essentials, it's filled with tons of old photos, movies, docs, games, and I'm scared to think of what else. The SATA to USB connector broke on it, so I took the drive apart and put it inside my computer. I opened up device manager because it wasn't showing up automatically and the 2TB is showing up as unallocated, I'm freaking out now because I'm scared the data was somehow deleted.

What do I do?

edit: I realize also this isn't directly related to Windows 8 (besides the fact it's the OS I'm on), but I don't know where else to post it. I'd also like to say that I had a really deep feeling the drive was going to break continually for about two weeks before it happened, so if you have a similar feeling about something, don't ignore it!

Answer:External hard drive shell broke, salvaged internal drive

As long as your hard disk is still spinning & recognized by Windows, the data in your hard disk is still there, just the File Allocation Table got corrupted, You'll have a good chance to recover your data. What you need is a data recovery program, I use this program in the past:

Data Recovery Software Products - Runtime Software Products

In the mean time, leave this hard disk alone, do not initialize or format it when Windows offers to do so.

Hello all, This is an ASUS P5P43TD-Pro socket 775 Q8400, latest BIOS release. Works normally in all known other aspects. Windows 7 Enterprise, x64. 16GB memory. BIOS settings all "auto", i.e. no OC or anything of the sort. On-board LAN, Serial, parallel, IEEE all disabled. NVidia 220 video card, also set for defaults. There are six internal SATA ports (native ICH10R), with five fixed internal drives connected. The sixth port goes to an external SATA tray intended for hot-plugging bare drives. The BIOS does not distinguish between fixed and removable drives as some newer BIOSs permit. All you get to set is IDE emulation or AHCI. The drives are all set for AHCI to enable hot-swapping. The SATA driver in Windows is the Intel RST recommended by ASUS for this board. I have not allowed it to update to more recent versions. All this stuff basically works, but there's one screwy problem I can't seem to resolve. Out of the four drives that typically get hot-plugged into the external bay, three of them work exactly as you'd expect them to. The OS detects them and mounts them with a drive letter (H:, which is the next in line). No problem. ONE of the four drives causes this weird problem where it actually causes a dismount of one of the fixed drives. Not only a dismount, but it disappears from the list of devices too. And to make it even stranger, the new drive mounts with the correct drive letter (H), even though it knocks off the drive designated E! A... Read more

Answer:Hot-plug external drive = forcibly dismounts internal drive. Why??

That's a first time hearing an issue like that, I am puzzled as well, I'd look at BIOS settings and drivers as cause or bad drive electronics on the ONE.

Is there something different about that one?

I would have your co. pay for another drive in that situation and probably perform destruction procedures on the one not working, or DoD procedures to wipe it if it's under warranty before RMA'n it.

Why do files moved to an external drive not behave the same as those same files in an internal drive? I noticed that if I do anything to a file that is in an external drive, that file can not be saved under the same name (read only). In order to do so one must save it internally and then copy or move it to the external drive.

So I did just that--I copied a file from taken from an external drive, saved it in the internal one and then copied it back to the external one. Now if I r-click the propeerties of these 2 same files and then go to the 'Security' tab a difference is immediately apparent: The internal one has -1- System & -2 My-computername (user-PC\user and -3- Administrators (user-PC\Administrators) with all 3 accounts allowing all (full control, read, write, etc..). While the external drive has in Properties; -1- System -2- Administrators (user-PC\Administrators) and -3- Users (user-PC\Userrs) with this final 3d one (and different one) with no Allow for "full control, or modify or write.

So how does one have all its files in this external drive behave and be equal to all the same files in the internal drive?

Since -3- Users (user-PC\Userrs) in the external drive is that which is differnt from the internal drive I was wondering if it is OK to delete this Permission or 'attribute' or whatever it is called and create instead one equal to the one in the internal drive -3- Administrators (user-PC\Administrators)?
ANd of course doing so in one go and not file after ... Read more

Hi all

I had an old laptop that died by water damage, its OS was Vista. I removed its internal hard drive as it contains valuable photos. I read that you can convert internal hard drives into external USB ones so I purchased the necessary 2.5" sata case from ebay, put it all together and plugged it into my new Windows 10 laptop. The new laptop does not want to acknowledge the drive. I changed the drive letter to one that wasn't used, 'M' in this case, it shows as Drive M on my file manager but when I click on it it only asks me to put a disk into the drive. I have run a couple of scanning programs on it, Stellar Phoenix data recovery and Recuva with no luck. I do not want to lose the data that was on there so can anyone help with any solutions?
Many thanks!!

Hi,

Recently I added additional internal HDD (WD 2TB SATA3 64MB Green) as a secondary storage.

The original SATA cable connector is:
SATA3_0 - WD 1TB
SATA3_1 - Samsung DVD-RW
SATA2_2 - Empty
SATA2_3 - Empty
SATA2_4 - eSATA connector cable from computer's casing - Empty
SATA2_5 - eSATA connector Cable from Computer's Casing - Empty

I rearranged the cables to:
SATA3_0 - WD 1TB
SATA3_1 - WD 2TB
SATA2_2 - Empty
SATA2_3 - Samsung DVD-RW
SATA2_4 - eSATA connector from computer casing - Empty
SATA2_5 - eSATA connector from Computer Casing - Empty

Once done, the motherboard BIOS only detects both the HHD. It doesn't detect the DVD-RW anymore. Before this both the HDD and DVD-RW was working fine.

I tried changing the DVD-RW's SATA cable to a new one, tried connecting the DVD-RW in other SATA2 port but still same.

Note: I didn't change any setting in BIOS.
BIOS Setting:
In "Standard CMOS Features" all IDE Channel 0-3 is set to "AUTO" hardware detection.
In "Integrated Peripherals":
- PCH SATA control mode is always been [AHCI]
- SATA Port0-3 Native Mode is always been [Enabled]

Please help me to solve this problem. I want the BIOS and Win 7 to detect the Samsung DVD-RW as well.

My system:
CPU: Intel i7-2600 3.4 Ghz
MB: GA-P67A-UD3P(rev. 1.0) - BIOS Ver : F4
VGA: Sapphire Toxic HD6850 1G

Answer:BIOS not detecting Internal SATA DVD/CD optical drive

Apart from the detection on the screen, does the drive seem to work normally? If so, I would leave it alone.

If not, the drive has likely failed... it doesn't take much for an optical drive to go bad.

Final test? Does it work in another computer?

This same computer configuration worked normally with Windows 7. Windows 7 recognized the internal optical drive.
How do I report this Window 10 deficiency directly to someone at Microsoft who has the authority to correct Windows 10 and alleviate the problem?

Answer:Desktop Internal Optical Drive not recognized by Windows 10

Let me summarize: Your drive "HP DVD- RAM GH40" is recognized in the BIOS, but not in Windows.

I have solved this kind of problem just yesterday, see here: [FIX] Optical Drives (CD/DVD) Icon Not Showing in My Computer Window - AskVG

For the user yesterday, the solution was to run this .reg file, which will modify one value in the Windows Registry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0]
"EnumDevice1"=dword:00000001

I don't say that it will necessarily help you as well, but it helped him. Apart from that the link contains a number of other possible solutions.

Hi, in "This PC" my 2nd internal data HDD shows an Optical Drive icon instead of the usual HDD icon. How can I fix this? Thanks

Answer:2nd internal data HDD shows with Optical Drive icon

Set your folder options to "show hidden files" & Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" then look in the root of the drive. Is there an autorun.inf file there ? If so, delete it.

Hi,

I disabled the optical drive from Windows System folder because it was faulty and slowing down my computer.

However, now, a virus has stopped from starting Windows.

Since this configuration of Windows on the Hard Drive, can I replace the Hard Drive with a new one so it can:

A. Reset my configuration to allow a Windows Installation disk to boot up from the "newly installed" optical drive,

B. Erase any prior infected files I may have had on the previous Hard Drive.

Thank you,

P.S.

The computer is a Dell Inspirion 2200 Notebook.

I've got a Sony Vaio PCG-F190 laptop, and it's hard drive is shot. I've got no warranty of any sort on it, and right now I have a $0 budget for it, but I want to get it working. Without your system specs, its hard to say which is best, but the fact that it comes with the starter edition tells me that this is a bare bones system. Without a cd/dvd drive, you are pretty much stuck with a flash drive installation... Do you have the ISO for Windows 7 ???

I have a sony vaio laptop model pcg 7m1m, a couple of years ago while it was still under warrenty it started acting weird so i sent it back to sony and they said it needed a new harddrive which they replaced, got it back and everything has been fine for a couple of years. Now im having the same symptoms again, obviuosly lappy is now outa warranty, and i was wondering how hard it would be for me to replace it myself?
So my questions are
1. How can i tell 100% if it is the harddrive thats on its way out?
2. Where would i purchase a new hardrive?
3. Can a complete novice like myself fit it and get it working?

Also i think i would need to create a new boot cd before i remove old harddrive, is that still possible to do?

Answer:Help with hard drive on sony vaio

You wont need to create a new boot CD ... to test the HDD ... insert your original boot CD ... restart and boot from it ... assuming its XP, press r when asked ... then type chkdsk /r ... once its done, reboot the machine and remove your CD, when you desktop is loaded, right click on My Computer and select Manage, then select Event Viewer, then select Applications ..., if you sort your entries by date, find the latest one name winlogon ... down the bottom it will have a heap of information when selected, find where it says (x) KB Bad Sectors and post it

I have a Sony Vaio laptop & the CD part of the CD/DVD drive has stopped working. It will still play a DVD, but will not play or record cd's. If I put a new cd in to record on, the player makes some noise and then says to insert a blank cd. If I put in a (non-copied) music cd, it makes the same weird noises & nothing plays. Also won't work for photo or data cd's. Again, works perfect for DVD's. Does anyone know what's up confused I'm looking for my receipt but I'm pretty sure I bought it at the end of May '06, so it's over a year. We called Sony and they had me uninstall drivers, then reinstall -- no work. Then he had me do a complete recovery -- also no work. He told me that the cd/dvd drive can't be changed by me & that I'd have to send it into Sony. Does anyone have any ideas or can anyone tell me how hard it is to change this myself & maybe where to find one? I know it's not a pop in or out. Thanks in advance, Chuck

We do have a registry fix for this, which puts the drive back, but we can't expect the non-technical customer to keep doing this every day or two.

This has been a problem since day one. Sony don't want to know as it's a software problem.

HI. I need to know what to do about my DVD drive being FULL with no free space? I assume also that is why it is not working as it used to? Is there a way to free up momory, or probably more likely, I need to install more memory or even a new DVD Drive?

Answer:Sony Vaio DVD Drive QUESTION

You are probably talking about HD space. You can click on 'my computer' and see just how much free space you have. You can also run disk cleanup (check every box there) and then defrag the HD - that should clear up a bunch of space too.

I don't have Windows 7 yet, but I'm just about to install it, but I figure it may be safe to do a back up first. I'm about to do an upgrade from Vista 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit. I did find these recommendations:

"An image backup of your hard drive offers an easy, dependable way to do just that, since it restores everything on the hard drive: Windows, applications, data, and even the Master Boot Record. To create one, you'll need an external hard drive, and an image backup program. I recommend the free version of Macrium Reflect for image backup, although others will do. Plug in the external hard drive before you create the image, and select that drive as the Backup destination. Also, be sure to create the bootable Rescue CD (this option is on Macrium Reflect's Other Tasks menu) before you start the upgrade."

In these instructions they mention "external hard drive". Does it really have to be an external drive? I have several internal drives to choose from, can't I just use one of them? I have 1 drive with Vista OS and 3 more drives within my computer, so It would be great if I could use one of them.

Answer:Back up on external drive or internal drive

Hello ptoolemy, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can save the backup/image to any external or internal HDD you like. It's just recommended to save it onto a separate physical HDD that is not included in the backup/image. That's all.

Answer:Need a new hard drive for Sony Vaio laptop

As long as your chipset supports SATA it should work fine, because SATA is backwards compatible; SATA II and III will work with SATA I ports. What is the model of your VAIO? There are some old notorious chipsets that require you to have a jumper on your drive to force it to operate in SATA I mode; e.g. http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Barracuda-XT-Barracuda-Barracuda/Seagate-barracuda-7200-12-jumpered-to-SATA-150/td-p/33122 . Those are usually chipsets with old Intel ICH4/5/6 / VIA8237 I/O controllers.

OK Guys, I have just about had it...

I have replaced hundreds of hard drives over the past few years on a variety of different computers, usually through the process of imaging the original with Acronis then moving the image to a new drive...

95% of the time, it goes flawlessly, except with older Compaq desktops and now an older Sony Vaio. (PCV-RS220)

The original drive is a 120GB Seagate. It does boot.

The bios will not recognize any new hard drive (IDE) that I put in this system, it continuously says 'Primary Master Failed'. I have tried 2 western digital drives, one 250GB and the other 160GB. I placed the image on the new drives and neither will boot. It's not a matter of a bad image, the BIOS simply will not recognize the drives.

I am pulling my hair out!!! Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Thanks in advance,
Randy

Okay, I have 15 GB C drive and 40 GB , D drive on my Laptop w/winXP. NFTS not Fat 32 system. had to get rid of system restore to get 1 GB space and I noticed that my iTunes have 2 Gb of songs. I am left with barely 2 GB of space on my hard drive and when I put something in it, it says I have no room.

I was moving my itunes folder to my D drive but I noticed it was just copying it. I dont want to fhave 2 folders of itunes and I dont want to lose my songs.

On the bottom of the drives, there is an option to compress drives. I am not familiar with this feature, is it worth doing it. Any downside to doing this?

I wish I only had one drive rather than the 2 partiton that the computer came with.

Any ideas to fix this problem? TIA

I have a Sony Vaio model VPC-71912L and am having problems with a slow start up (expired warranty repair). One of the Vaio Care tests I did, was on the hard drive and it reported "CRITICAL - There is at least one item that needs immediate attention". Nothing else about how to fix/repair. Anyone have any ideas? Not sure what to do next.

Answer:Sony VAIO hard drive problem

The fix for any hard drive failure is to replace it. Here's a list of 500GB and bigger drives with a SATA interface: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...CodeValue=355:7776&PropertyCodeValue=360:7801

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR220E operating Windows Vista. After shutting down my laptop and turning it back on, a black screen appeared with a cursor blinking in the top left corner of the screen. After pressing F12 and attempting to reboot the internal hard disk drive the following message has appeared and has stayed on the screen for about 30 minutes at this point:

Yukon PXE v5.17.2.3 (20061031)
(C)Copyright 2003-2006 Marvell(R). All rights reserved.
Pre-boot eXecution Environment (PXE) v2.1
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.

At the next line, there is a blinking cursor. What should I do to correct this? Thank you.

Someone at work has this laptop. The hard drive has either died or the connection to it has worked itself loose. I am going to be fixing it (need the money) but I know how cantankerous Sony laptops are for getting into them.

I have been trying to search for a disassembly guide for this model but have come up empty. Oh, I can find all kinds of guides for Sony laptops, but none are made like this one. And I don't have much time to try to track one down due to personal issues (uncle dying).

Anyone up to finding one?

Hi all,

I have exactly the same problem with my sons Sony Vaio laptop as the member in thread:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/909494-my-laptop-says-has-no-2.html

The Hard drive is a Seagate ST9160821AS but having looked on the net it would appear this model is not made anymore.

Does anyone know of a different model HDD that I could purchase that would be compatible with this laptop.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Phil.

I'm working on my brother's Sony Vaio laptop (model VGN-SZ120P) and per the device manager it has a Matshita UJ-842D dvd/cd drive.  I just reinstalled windows xp pro and was updating all his drivers when I noticed a conflict in the device manager for this.  Under the properties I get the message "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged.  (Code 19)".  I've tried locating a driver for this drive online but the only place I've been able to find that claims to have it won't allow me to download it without becoming a member of their site.  I've also gone through the Sony website and downloaded drivers from there, but nothing helps.  Any suggestions?

Answer:Problem with dvd/cd drive in Sony Vaio laptop

Nevermind, I found a solution by googling "Code 19"...

This laptop contains a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ890AS which will not read any format of disc.

The problem started completely out of the blue as the drive was working perfectly fine a couple of days prior to the problem starting. Whether a windows update or iTunes update etc

The drive is showing in Disk Management and shows as working properly in Device Manager.

Event viewer shows the following error The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom0.

I have so far;
Checked for available driver updates - none noted
Uninstalled the driver, rebooted the machine and let Windows re-install automatically - still no resolution to the problem.
Tweaking the registry to remove the upper filters associated with iTunes - since resorted back to standard as this did not resolve the issue.
Also removed iTunes and reinstalled

Machine is running Windows 7 Home Premium (SP1) 64 Bit.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Answer:Sony Vaio VGN-NW20SF DVD-RAM Drive Not Reading

Disc recognition is a hardware issue within the drive itself. If the drive isn't recognizing discs, the drive is faulty.

Answer:Missing Drive Sony Vaio Windows 7

If you have a 64bit system, try this. But create a restore point first. This may or may not work.

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNFW351J&upd_id=5120&os_id=45

Edit: Before doing this, you may want to try installing the Vista Driver and see if that works. You may have to use compatibility mode.

The hard drive in my wife's Sony Vaio is showing every sign of failure and, as the machine is inevitably out of warranty, I'm looking to replace the drive myself. The Toshiba 320gb hard drive is easily accessible and, assuming I can identify and buy the correct replacement, is it simply a matter of changing it and then running the recovery disks, or am I missing something?

Answer:Sony Vaio hard drive replacement

If you Clone the disk, assuming the current HDD lasts long enough, everything should be exactly as is. To clone the drive you`ll need to have an external backup drive and the manufacturer of the new drive will probably make a cloning tool available for you.
If the drive fails the recovery disks are your only option but obviously you will need to reinstall all the updates as well as the software installed since the computer was new.

Hi, I have a sony vaio vgn s18 gp laptop. It is a centrino laptop with 60gb hdd. This was bought in dubai in 2005 I think.
Basically today I switched on the laptop and I got a BSOD which said "unmountable_boot_volume". I cannot get the actual error code as the screen is crack. I searched up the "unmountable_boot_volume" BSOD on the internet and it was said the hard drive is the problem it could be corrupt OS files or a not working hard drive, so I tried to use the recovery CD but even though CD optical drive is first in BIOS it would keep going to to hard drive. I then opened up the laptop and removed the hard drive and put into into a 2.5 hdd external hdd caddy but the hard drive would not show up on my pc. I basically need to get really important files of the Hard Drive is there any way? I dont really care if the hard drive is unusable after that I just really need my files. I cant use get databack as drive does not show up? I heard of the freezer trick will it work?

Answer:Sony Vaio Laptop Hard Drive

"I heard of the freezer trick, will it work?"...

This "trick" was first indended to be used on the older desktop hard drives. I haven't tried it on laptop drives at all... If you really needed your files, they should have been backed up. Today, with the use of a USB backup device like an external CD/DVD burner or a thumb drive, there is no excuse to have to loose valuable data at all

I have a Sony VAIO vgn-ar590e, and I recently installed a second hard drive (not the one carrying the OS). Prior to this, my laptop had an empty bay for the second hard drive, since the repair shop told me it was bad, so I had them remove it. I recently bought this second hard drive (Seagate ST9320421AS 320Gig SATA, 7200RPM)m and installed it. I checked the CMOS setup, and it sees the second drive, I can find it in Device Manager, but Windows Vista does not show it in Windows Explorer. How do I get it recognized?

Answer:Sony Vaio/Vista(?) does not see new hard drive

Goto Control Panel -> Computer management then disk management. If windows is recognising it then you should see it in there then you can assign it a drive letter and then start using it. I'd image it will be Disk 1 and say unassigned on it.

Up until recently my dvd/cd drive was working, I am convinced an apple update has done something to it as it doesnt recognise a disc in the drive, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling etc. and drivers you name it but I am at a loss to know what to do, I cant put anything on ipod because its not doing anything. Help!

Answer:Unable to work dvd/cd drive Sony Vaio help!

Do you have a bootable CD or DVD? If so then set the drive as first boot device and test whether or not it will boot. If it will not boot then you have a hardware failure. If it will boot then you have a windows problem.Goin' Fishin' (Some day)

Hi guys,

I've just popped open my Sony Vaio NR21J/S laptop to put a new hard drive inside and my setup looks like this (sorry in advance for the bad quality images):

(IDE 2.5" 40gb Hard Drive)

#

I haven't fitted a hard drive before but have done a lot of research online before I finally gave in. The problem is my setup doesn't seem to look like anyone elses. I have the caddy and my new hard drive ready to go, but what is the circuit board piece for?

It slots nicely into the IDE slot on the mother board but it doesn't fit on the hard drive properly. As far as I knew it was a case of putting the new hard drive in the caddy, fastening it all and lining it up and sliding it in the IDE slot, but it won't fit which leads me to believe the circuit board must play a serious part (no way Sherlock, I know)

If anyone could shed some light on exactly how I install this I'll be grateful.

Answer:Installing new hard drive in Sony Vaio problematic!

The circuit board came with the new drive? If so that's odd. Where did you get this drive from? Why only a 40GB? But from the specs it would appear the hard drive interface is SATA not PATA(IDE), maybe they expect you to remove the PATA circuit board and use the SATA circuit board with the hard drive, but there's odd that they'd do that.

Also please do not use profanity, this is a family oriented oriented forum. I've edited your post.

Answer:Problem with sony Vaio optiarc 7700h dvd/cd drive

I'd read somewhere that Sony had told folks NOT to update their laptops to Win10. It might have had something to do with Sony working on Win10 drivers that were not ready yet. Would be worth your checking out Sony Support forums to find out.

Hello everyone,

I pretty much lost my hope to restore my d:/ drive and all what was in it (all my data) before restoring my laptop but hope dies last.

I found this thread D Drive missing after Recovering Computer and it seems guy was smart enough to backup all his data in d:/ drive but I wasn't. I had no idea that after factory reset everything including my d:/ drive will be gone.

So, I was wondering if anyone knows some way to restore my data which was in my D:/ drive ?

Thanks an advance.

Answer:D:/ drive is gone after factory reset on Sony Vaio Laptop ???

Do you mean your D partition ?

Because if you had a separate D drive, you should have pulled it before you did the factory reset.

Why would you have to restore a data drive, what was wrong with it that you had to reset windows, a data drive or partition has nothing to do with windows ????

As Windows is on C, not D.
