Windows Explorer Scrolling on it's own

Question: Windows Explorer Scrolling on it's own

I just got a used Acer Aspire 3000-3004 I'm not sure.  It says 3004 on back but 3000 on everything else.  I first started it and opened IE to get Chrome installed, but IE was scrolling on it's own.  I thought this might be some kind of infection so I came here first to find out.  Has someone taken over this pc?  Wanted to get some advice before I even did a scan with free AVG antivirus.  I also have Recovery discs if that is the beast way to go, and, considering it is Used - perhaps this is the best thing to do.  I have another Laptop running Linux if needed, this new used laptop will be for Windows needs.

In System Properties I removed the Tick in the box for "Allow Remote invitations to be sent from this compter"

It says 2GB of Virtual memory, that means it's got 2 GB of RAM right?

Another question: The C:Drive says that only 10GB is being Used and 69.6 of free space.  Is that possible with an XP install, seems very small to me.

XP Home Edition 32bit SP3 Buid 2600
X86-based PC
Mobile AMD Sempron™ Processor 3100+ 1.58 GHz PAE Enabled
1.43GB of RAM
AVG Antivirus
2GB memory

Preferred Solution: Windows Explorer Scrolling on it's own

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows Explorer Scrolling on it's own

I think I got it guys.  I Reset the mousepad default settings with a few exceptions and now appears to work ok, not impressed with the mouse pad in general though.

I open Windows Explorer with the Windows keyboard key plus "e". I begin navigating in the left pane to the desired folder by using the scroll bars and expanding folders by using the + at the left of folder names. Not every time but most times the left panel will scroll of its own volition. Up or down, it does not seem to be consistent. Then I have to go back to the scroll bar and return the left pane to the view I wanted and was at. This happens on my laptop at work and my desktop at home. How do I configure Windows Explorer to stay where I put it?

Thanks.

Windows Explorer in Windows 7 is aggravating me. In the left panel, when I click on the little + sign to expand a folder to show its subfolders, Windows Explorer scrolls the selected main folder to the bottom of the panel. I then have to scroll the expanded list of subfolders up the screen so I can see it. Windows Explorer does this most, but not all, of the time. How can I keep Windows Explorer from scrolling the list to the bottom of the panel? Is there a way to get Windows Explorer to put the line with the name of the expanded main folder at the top of the panel? Thanks.Steve

Answer:Windows Explorer unwanted scrolling

That's a known "bug" in the RTM (Released To Manufacturing) version of Windows 7 without SP1 installed. So installing SP1 might fix it. SP1 is normally delivered via Automatic Updates.

Hi
I've Dell Inspiron 1564, Windows 7 Ultimate and everything was working fine until I installed UXStyle Core Beta and a custom theme. Now my left and right arrow keys are scrolling within a row but at the end of a row of files/ folders in windows explorer but its not going on to next row with right arrow and previous row with left arrow. I checked scrolling between lines in MS Word and everything's fine there. I've even tried switching back to default windows theme.

Any help?

Answer:Arrow keys not scrolling in windows explorer

Seems like uninstalling UXStyle Core Beta and a custom theme would fix the problem.

Sounds like you don't have the proper driver for the video adapter. You can obtain this from the manufacturer.

Hi everyone,

This is my first post here. I just got a Dell XPS 8300 with Windows Professional 64-bit. So far, most everything seems to be working normally. However, in Windows Explorer (which I use a lot), the left-side Navigation Pane is getting all screwed up visually when I scroll.

As an aside, I would really like to turn off smooth scrolling in Windows Explorer, but can't figure out how to do it. I have "smooth-scroll list boxes" unchecked, but it doesn't seem to help. I can get TweakUI for XP to run in compatibility mode either (someone on another forum was able to use that to disable smooth scrolling). I wonder if the animated smooth scrolling is causing the problem.

Different types of scrolling cause different degrees of the problem, but it happens nearly all the time. Hitting F5 will clean up the screen, but I would rather figure out what's causing the screen repaint problems.

I've attached a screenshot of what's happening.

I've done many searches (on this forum and other places) and not seen much, if any, people talking about this.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Chris

My background is 3840 by 1080. I have 55 pictures in a Dropbox account of that size. When I click on one of the last ones, to make it background, or just to look at it... the scroll bar on the right goes right back up to the top.

Windows 8 and 8.1 did the same. It is so annoying, to always have to down to the bottom of the folder manually.

Windows 7 never did this. I wish they would make it as Windows 7 handled this..!

Go to the feedback section of MS(win10) and post the suggestion. If other agree with you then something might be done about this.

I've got a logitech mouse and the scroll button works fine in mozilla by that I mean when you scroll the wheel it moves then stops. But when I'm in internet explorer and use the scroll wheel the scrolling keeps move after I've stopped moving the wheel. I've tried the settings in the logitech software, but nothing stops the scrolling from continuing to move a few times after you move the wheel. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Hi Rich,
Don't know if your mouse works like mine (It's a DEll) but in scrolling, if I DON'T clik the switch, it stops just like it should. But if I do Click the switch & produce the little up/dn arrow thingy & then point it in a direction, it'll keep moving!

a wheel mouse is useful for web browsing with the wheel you can set the scrolling rate more effectively.

A optical wheel mouse is not that expensive now.

Hi,

I don't remember seeing this when I first started Windows 7 so I must've accidentally enabled it somewhere. Don't know what it's called, so I couldn't do a proper search for it.

Basically, this tooltip shows up next to the scrollbar as I scroll up and down. It updates to show Explorer's topmost file in view, and I have no use for it.

Where can I disable this feature?

Thanks!

I own a Dell Dimension 8250 w/ Windows XP

Ever since I updated my computer to Internet Explorer 7 (from the most recent version, 6 or 6.2?), my scrolling has become very slow (scrolling down and up the webpage). I have no idea why either. Also, when I close the webpage, the actual webpage becomes white (goes away) and I'm left with my google search, command bar, address bar, you know... (as if you opened a pure white webpage) I have to go to task manager and "End Now". However, this does not always happen and I can close it normally (rarely happens). I tried downloading IE6.2 (or 6 whatever version it was), but it won't let me because it says a newer version of IE is already on the computer.

I'm not really sure if the problem is even from IE or if it's from some other program

Please help & thanks,

Mat

But to say that many of us have had to roll back to IE6.

IF you want to try rolling back to IE 6 ...
go to Add Remove > check the box that says "show updates" ...
Find and remove the IE 7 update >>> and reboot.

The scroll bars at side of pages, be they Word, email (uses word) or explorer start jumping up and down for no reason and render programmes unuseable. Its settled just for the moment. Going back to basics, PSU giving steady o/p volts - have checked for over-heating - fans all working - PC clean out, but fact that has just stopped is a coincidence because it started again briefly a few moments ago. Has anyone any ideas please......before it goes unstable again. Many thanks.

Yes! I notice my wheelmouse will not scroll down through the bookmarks in Explorer 8. If I click on a particular site, I can scroll using the wheelmouse. If though, I click on page to the right, no more can I scroll.

Is this a bug within Internet Explorer, or is there a way to overcome this within the program itself.

Please type all answers very slowly so I can understand them. Thanks!

Hello everyone,

My fiance just got her first Windows 10 laptop recently, and the behaviour of Explorer is driving her nuts. The navigation pane on the left will not scroll horizontally (neither with a horizontal scrollbar nor auto-scrolling as it did in previous versions of Windows), or at least we can't find the right option to enable either:

This is pretty unusable as it is, so I'm hoping that someone can suggest something. She will switch to an alternate file manager (we've seen recommendations for Classic Shell and xplorer2) if necessary, but would prefer to stick with the Windows 10 file explorer if possible.

Thanks to everyone!

Answer:How to get horiz scrolling in Navigation Pane in Win 10 Explorer

linuxgarou said:

Welcome to TenForums @linuxgarou

One suggestion would be to hover the mouse over the dividing line between the navigation pane and the list of files (it's the right-hand edge of the navigation pane's vertical scroll bar). When the pointer becomes a double-headed arrow you can click-and-drag to make the navigation pane wider.

I have mine set to about twice the width of the one in your screenshot.

Edit: and so apparently does Ztrucker in the following post.

My computer is an HP Pavilion dv6000 running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I recently had a hard drive replaced and the OS reinstalled.

This morning I was irritated to find that my IE is very choppy when scrolling. I looked this problem up online, and I tried the couple of ideas I read about...mainly making sure that "smooth scrolling" was checked in a couple places.

Also, the laptop seemed hotter than usual when I was using it. I downloaded SIW, and the temperatures are as follows:
ACPI - 121 F (50 C)
AMD - 116 F (47 C)
NVIDIA - 156 F (69 C)

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Answer:Internet Explorer scrolling is choppy and laptop seems hot

I am not familiar with temperature systems in computers but If you feel that is hotter than before, then that could be the reason for slowing down(I guess you meant "choppy" for slow). Anyway if this is the reason, then not only IE, some other programs also has to slow down. Check that and if that is true, please move this to the Hardware section

Answer:Internet Explorer scrolling is choppy and laptop seems hot

Temps are not that bad, but they could be lower, and lower is definitely better. However please be aware that these models suffer from overheating and eventual complete failure. You need to update the BIOS to help negate this problem. Also after updating the BIOS you can also buy a can of compressed air and blow out the fans and vents to ensure proper airflow.

Go here and find your exact model; this will be printed on the bottom of the laptop: http://www8.hp.com/ca/en/support-drivers.html

Also install the NVIDIA chipset and graphics driver from the HP website, or possibly newer ones from NVIDIA themselves if the HP ones are dated or don't help: http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_vista_win7_64bit_15.49.html

Since you also had this laptop reloaded, did they reinstall the Vista service packs as well? You should be running Service Pack 2 for Vista. You can check this by going to the Control Panel and then to System.

Also, these laptops came with a 32 bit version of Windows Vista Home Premium, did you or they mistaken install the 64 bit version instead of the 32 bit version? The 64bit version requires more RAM to run as well as the 32 bit version and these laptops generally shipped from HP with 1GB or 2GB of RAM, how much RAM do you have?

Hi, I have a problem with Outlook Express & Internet Explorer acting erratically lately. When I try to scroll on the side bar arrow it moves real fast to the bottom and all buttons I try to click in the tool bar also are acting erratically in that sometimes I have to click two or three times (ex: clicking the delete button etc.) . It does the same thing while in Internet Explorer. When trying to scroll in that I am unable to scroll as it moves quickly to the bottom of the screen no matter how slow I try to go. I have smooth scrolling checked in the options box and this just started happening all of a sudden. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Using a Logitech Laser mouse, which came with the LX710, there is an issue when attempting to scroll through a long list of files inside Windows Explorer while using the wheel. The cursor jumps to the end, or to the beginning, but will not stop in between. On the other hand, if I access a long list of Word files directly through Word, the wheel functions perfectly.

I have goggled and done al the thongs commonly posted out there with no change.
When viewing scrolled down a list of folders moving the folder I want up to a level where I want it on screen, then opening the folder to view the content inside, when I back out of this folder the lish has now scrolled the folder to the bottom of the screen. I want the scrolled position to be as I left it.

I have unchecked accent color and other various so called fixes seen on the Webb. I have a laptop running Win10 Home x64 and a Desktop running Win10 Pro x64 and they both do the same thing.

I would owe someone if they helped me fix it without Classic Shell. Have Registry Experience, Will Travel.

Example: You have a folder open with pictures in it. The Explorer window for said window is in List view mode, and at least 2 rows are visible. The file you want to open is in the 2nd row. When you click the file, it automatically scrolls the list so that the file you selected is in the left-most row, rendering any double-click on the 2nd or subsequent rows ineffective. Instead of opening the file, it selects the file, immediately scrolls it's row back, selects the new file that has scrolled into that row in the same position and scrolls it back as well.

Is it possible to institute a small delay on the automatic scrolling to allow for double-clicking or disable the behavior entirely?

Sorry if this has been covered before, I couldn't find any relevant info through searching.

I just recently purchased an Lenovo X200 Tablet and whenever I scroll down the page in Internet Explorer, I get intermittent freezing or stuttering. The stutter/pause happens for about 3-10 seconds and then resumes to scroll. It appears to happen mostly on pages such as Amazon.com or Ebay.com and despite having the webpage fully downloaded, it still occurs scrolling up and down the same page. I tried updating my wireless network drivers thinking it could be poor wireless internet reception but it still occurs; there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with my router or internet broadband as I tested it on another computer.  I don't know if it has any relationship to the "buzzing" or "whining" noise, Centrino whine that people have spoken of in the forums, that I also hear with my computer when it's extremely quiet. If anyone has experience or can advise what's going on, I'd appreciate it.

Answer:Intermittent Freezing and Stutter while scrolling webpage in Internet Explorer on X200T

I would try using a different browser first like firefox to make sure it isn't an issue with IE and not something else. I personally do not use IE as the default browser and have never experienced such issues in firefox with my X200 tablet. let us know the results.

I've noticed a recent problem on both of my Sony Vaio machines running Windows XP. I have IE 6.0 installed on both machines and have downloaded all windows patches and driver updates for my PCs.

The problem involves scrolling text boxes, such as you would find on any web-based email service, such as Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail. The text box is the box that appears when you go to reply to an email. It is basically the place where you edit text to be sent in a reply email. When I try to scroll up, either page-by-page or single line, the text keeps jumping down to the bottom of the message. Scrolling down doesn't produce any problems.

Needless to say, this can be quite annoying. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Answer:Textbox scrolling problem in Internet Explorer for Win XP on Sony Vaio Machines

I have a Sony Vaio and have never experienced this problem. However, I did have a friend that did on his machine (not a vaio) and it was due to incorrect mouse drivers.

Are your drivers current?

Hello, just wondering if anyone could help resolving choppy scrolling in IE11. When I scroll using the touchpad on the laptop, the cursor pointer comes up with the little blue spinning wheel (hourglass back in the day) like the computer is processing something. The pages scrolls but it's very lazy and I have to swipe across the whole touchpad area to just make the page to move few rows. Same issue when ctrl+scroll is used to magnify the page, same choppiness.troubleshooting done:- When I use the vertical scroll bar the page scrolls just fine- installed two Other browsers, no issue there- disabled smooth scrolling, no change- tried all drivers available

Hi. I have a Dell Inspiron 14. 2Gb Memory Core2Duo.

I can;t scroll Sideways but I can going up and down.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Dell Touchpad not scrolling Sideways. But scrolling Up & Down

On both my Acer aspire one netbook (synaptics) and my Lenovo notebook (alps) I need to tab twice on the lower edge of the touchpad (to gain its attention?!?) and then it will scroll. Beyond that I believe you need to take a walk on the Dell support web site. There are number of 14xx models so you need to follow the steps there to find the freshest driver for your particular model. On both of mine the newest drivers have given scrolling as well as "pinching" to re-size pages, photos etc.

When I operate the scroll bar, instead of a smooth scroll down or up the page, the scrolling occurs in jerks, making the page appear to "ripple". I am using windows XP. In addition, when I watch DVDs the crarity is not so good. It has only just started happening. Any ideas?

Answer:Strange scrolling or wobbling scrolling

Does this happen to the entire screen or portions of the screen (like a horzontal line), or just with the scroll bars?

Whenever I open a window it scrolls up and down like crazy. Has anybody seen this before? Its so fast that I cant read anything in the window. This happens in everything with a scroll bar.

Answer:Windows scrolling like mad

Its possible that on eof your software programs may be causing this.
Although trying another mouse wouldnt be a bad decision either, sometimes scolling buttons on mice can become a bit screwed up and cause all types of wierd scrolling.

I've found then when I'm scrolling up ofdown on my laptop using the trackpad, it opens the start menu. Is this a fault with my laptop or is it a windows 10 thing? Never had the problem before I installed windows 10.

Answer:Scrolling Windows 10

It's possible that W10 has changed the behaviour of the touchpad and you may have a region of the pad activated for the start menu.

Here is the page in settings that you need to look at (type mouse in the search bar):

Look at the additional mouse settings and see if there is a tab for your trackpad and its settings. On mine there is a section where I can enable/disable tap zones

Its just possible that you may have been accidently touching the start menu zone without realizing it.

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

Answer:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

It is also not just web pages, it is in windows explorer, etc. as well. I would really appreciate any help, this is driving me nuts.

Not a problem, just wondering if this issue is adjustable within Windows 7 Pro Ed.

Currently, when using Explorer panes in Windows, the scroll feature always defaults to the left-side pane. Most often I use the left pane to open/close/select folders rather than scrolling, and do most of my scrolling in the right pane. The only way I've discovered to make the scroll 'choice' change to the right pane is to click into an empty area in it, which can be an annoyance if I'm viewing right-pane file choices as icons rather than a list.

Is there a way to make the scroll ability follow the cursor location, so that the scroll wheel automatically scrolls whatever pane the mouse is currently over?

I have the same problem when trying to drag a frame across the desktop.

I've got the same issue and I've read of a few others out there too. Something that worked for one person was to download the latest DirectX drivers from Microsoft - I tried this but it didn't work.
Have tried the XP Video troubleshooting routine - no help!
At about the same time this happened we've been unable to play any PC games and the ATI Radeon / Catalyst Utility can't run the video test clip that shows you the effect of changing various video settings (the sound plays, but no image)
Someone out there must have a fix!!?

It's a waste for me to have 120hz monitor when I can only trully enjoy it during gaming or dragging and dropping files, icons, active windows etc.
When I scroll down using the mouse button or just dragging the slide bar, I get this very jerky motion, which is really annoying especially when you want to scroll through lines of text while trying to read them at the same time, looking for specific word.
I googled the problem but no solution came up. Luckily for Chrome I did find an extension called "Chromium Wheel Smooth Scroller", its made by the same people who made "Yet Another Smooth Scroller" for Firefox. This extension works flawless and exactly what I wanted to achieve. Unfortunately now when I look at the rest of my desktop, scrolling through Total Commander, IRC, Foobar2000 makes it really painfully obvious how shitty the scrolling in Windows is.

My question, does anyone know of a program or a way to enable ultra mega smooth scrolling in Windows 7?

My apologies if this has already been answered somewhere, I did a search but could not find it....

I have smooth scolling enabled for my web browser and it is nice, however for local windows when working on my computer I can't seem to make it happen. I found something called tweak ui that was suggested on another forum but it's "enable smooth scrolling" feature does not seem to affect local windows. The default "jerky" scrolling is just plain frustrating when scrolling through a long list of files looking for something in particular. When the list moves in large jerky increments it's very difficult to keep track of where you are in the list.

Is smooth scolling possible in all windows, not just web browsers???

I have a W530, and one problem that has nagged me the entire time is that when I scroll either via a mouse wheel, or on the trackpad, it stutters. Scolling is very slow to get started, it jumps a tiny bit at first, then freezes for a bit, and then scrolls as it should. If I scroll up then down, or right to left, whatever I am scrolling essentially is frozen in place. I have exhausted all reasonable troubleshooting... clean re-install of Windows 8, tried various different video driver versions, with and without manufacturer provided mouse drivers, different mice, with nVidia Optimus on/off, using only the dedicated GPU, using only the integrated GPU. Nothing makes a difference. The only element left to consider seems to be the hardware, unless someone has a better idea.

When pointer stops working do the right or left clicks still function to where its only a positioning issue with the mouse moment not happening? Also will the keyboard continue to function or is that unresponsive as well would would point out that the entire computer is freezing vs just the mouse?System Checks to perform if the computer is also not responding to right or left clicks during this time are to see if the hard drive LED is lit with activity. Does the hard drive pass crystaldiskinfo to show that the hard drive is healthy? Does the system pass memtest86 to show the RAM is healthy after about 3 hours of it running without any errors? Is this computer clean of all malware and virus's? Have you tried using a corded mouse instead of cordless if the mouse is cordless to eliminate the possibility that its only an issue with cordless mice?If this is a desktop computer with PS2 ports available... if it comes down to just mouse controls gone, I would find a PS2 mouse for the computer. Shut computer down and attach the PS2 mouse, boot system and see if the issue continues or if its fixed. If the problem is fixed by PS2 mouse then you know your dealing with USB mouse only problem.

Hi there. I need help! Windows keeps scrolling through playlists when I try and play a song, it will simply flash through the playlist without playing anything. This happens in every media player I try. WMP, iTunes, Spotify. It's getting on my nerves! All I want to do is listen to music. What's so hard about that? So far I have tried a full re-installation of windows (twice), system restore and nothing has worked. On top of that some keyboard shortcuts (windows key, using the arrow keys to select from autocomplete on google or drop down menus etc) will not work. At this rate I'm going to buy another mac. I have a T530 and I recently installed windows 8, which has reverse scrolling set as default.Even after installing the new ultranav drivers and unchecking the reverse scrolling option in the scroll section, each time I restart the machine, the settings are lost and I get reverse scrolling back. Its as if the system never registers the choice!!Anyone else noticed the same thing? Nothing in Lenovo support.

Answer:windows 8 reverse scrolling

I found a solution by someotherguy on this thread that should help solve this issue. Make sure you UltraNav Driver is current, v16.2.14.0 the update can be found here.

While the default 2-finger scrolling behavior in Win8 is indeed backwards, the latest driver on the support website (16.2.14.0) has an option to reverse the backwards Win8 behavior. Have you tried it?
Try setting AND clearing the checkbox to see if you can get the behavior you want. It seems the default behavior is very strange where 2-finger scrolling is backwards but 1-finger scrolling is correct. After setting and clearing the checkbox (and clicking Apply after each change).
Good Luck and please let me know if this solution helps you. Thank you for being a part of the Lenovo

Just tonight I find that FF browser is moving up and down so fast that I cannot click any links. The same behavior occurs in Word doc., in Task Manager and possibly other programs I have yet to try. Any idea what is going on and a fix? Some sources online suggest it is a virus (scans are clean), or the mouse and/or drivers. I am using a wireless mouse, no problems with it though as far as I can tell.I thank you for your time and help. :)

Answer:windows keep scrolling jerkingly up and down

zeppz, you've ruled out a virus. How about a worm/trojan? Be aware that a virus and a Trojan are similar, but not the same. Many times, an AV detects one it can't clean, other times, it gets missed entirely. If you need to clean one, Malware Bytes (http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html) seems to be the preferred remover, but I've run into a few it couldn't handle. Superantispyware (seems able to handle all comers. Info only. I?m not paid for recommendation. WARNING! FYI, a full scan on mine takes over an hour.) can do the job and you can get it free @:http://www.superantispyware.com/among other places. They have a Vista compatible version if needed. Dunno about Windows 7 or later. If it turns out that you need to use it, be sure to update Superantispyware prior to running. Disable 'restore' after cleaning and run it again (to remove any nasties living there, restart after cleaning) so the nasty doesn't get put back should you later ?restore?. They just released a new update recently and it changes all the time. Things are in a constant state of flux. The restore thing is critical. May not be your deal at all, but won't hurt anything to try.My next though is a stuck key or memory location. Try another mouse? Maybe yours had a flameout? The jerkiness in the display speaks of buffering which may/may not really be a problem. I'd fix the scrolling first.HTHEd in Texas

It only seems to be on a page that takes up whole windows. If it is a small window inside another one it works fine. Can anyone out there help me?

I've been using 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium on thiscomputer for 3 years. Until last August I did not install anyupdates. At that time I installed Service Pack-1 from CD.No other updates. At about the time I installed SP-1, Windows began crashingoccasionally when I scroll a window using the mouse on thevertical thumb slider. I'm pretty sure it only happens whenI scroll upward, not down. It happens most often in InternetExplorer 8, but it has happened in some other programs, suchas my graphics drawing program. I don't recall that it hasever happened in my text editing program, and it has neverhappened in Windows Explorer. I will scroll a window down, and -- sometimes -- as soon as Istart to scroll back up, the video goes black and the computerfans go to full speed. I press the reset button to restart the computer. And there isan odd behavior when I do. Normally, say if I press the reset button while Windows isrunning, the fans will go to full speed for a moment and thenslow down to normal speed, and the power-on self-test begins. When a scroll-initiated crash occurs the fans go to full speed. When I then hit the reset button the fans momentarily slow, then go to full full speed again, then slow again, then go to fullspeed yet again before finally slowing to normal speed, andthe POST begins. I've never seen this happen in any othersituation. Has anyone else experienced scroll crash? Anyone have a good idea where the problem could be? -- Jeff, in Minneapolis

Answer:Windows 7 crashes while scrolling

I just got a used computer, and before I used it, reinstalled windows xp.

anyway, with ANY application I use, it lags behind, particularly when I scroll up or down in a program.

It's as if I'm dragging it, and it pauses for a couple of seconds, then finally does where I want it. this is very time consuming.

it's a dell latitude laptop with docking station. it does this without the docking station too.

the only thing I can think of, is when I reformatted it, I accidentally closed the laptop, which shut it down. it then resumed the xp installation.

do you think this did it? what is the cause and how do I fix? thanks

Hey all,
New HP i7 laptop plus a fresh operating system re-install. All is well for the most part, runs good. However, several times a day if I am on a web page for example like this one and am scrolling down 1 click at a time reading somethng, the darned thing takes off and keeps scrolling once in a while until I click it again. Doesn't matter what browser I am using and it is a real pain if I am in my email program and try to scroll thru pics to attach. It goes to the bottom of the list on its own in a hearbeat.
Updated the Snynaptics touchpad driver and all windows updates are installed. Happened since day one with this thing. The touchpad does not appear to stick on the left click, feels fine and gives no symptoms when doing other things.
I haven't a clue. Thanks for any ideas. If I had a guess i would say it is a bad driver but I have used a few.
Thanks

I had to reinstall or do a repair install windows xp pro because it wouldn't even load. Something about a missing or corrupt file...

Anyways after a day of install and fixing the desktop to look normal, deleting AVG and reinstalling it and getting windows to stop telling me I need updates - I'm left with one problem:

Any page I open, Firefox, IE, or even a word document the scroll doesn't work right and looks like its moving in waves and jumpy.

I've tried clicking/unclicking smooth scroll in options, there's nothing in my mouse settings to fix it.

I think it has something to do with my video card driver but that's where I'm at a loss and become totally ignorant. Windows doesn't recognize a name for it and I think is using a generic driver?

If someone could help, I'd really appreciate it.

Answer:Scrolling in waves after Windows install

Your video card drivers are not installed, or properly working. For smooth scrolling, and not that constant redraw that you are seeing, you need the hardware acceleration provided by your video card.

First, make sure your motherboard chipset drivers are installed and up to date.
Then, do the same with video drivers.

If you don't know how to do tis, or where to get the drivers, please post all of your system information, preferably a make and model of your computer. If you don't know that, then we need the motherboard information, as well as the video card information.

Well I eventually did the upgrade. If you want to call it that. I might switch back to Win 8.1I'm going along reading a webpage, just scrolling down a bit and it jumps away from me and scrolls all the way to the bottom of the page. I have to start scrolling back up to find my place. Then sometimes it does it again right after. Incredibly annoying, and I cant make it do it when I try, it's only when I'm not expecting it. Is this happening for anyone else?

Apache0c,

Try removing drivers and letting Windows 10 install them after a restart and see if that resolves the issue.

Did a clean install to Win8 Pro on a W520.  Two finger scroll didn't work immediately after install,. but started (sort of) working after I installed the drivers available / listed for Win8 on the W520 driver matrix.  Problem is the scrolling is reversed, similar to how Apple inverted scrolling in OSx Lion.  I HATE this scrolling method! Apple gives you the option to turn it off, but I can't seem to find an equivalent in the Synaptics driver options.  I've tried various versions of the Ultranav and generic synaptics drivers with no luck.  Anyone else experience the same and / or found a solution? Thanks!

Answer:W520 Windows 8 reverse scrolling

I have upgrade my Thinkpad T410 and have exactly the same issue. Can't live with that inverse scrolling. Hope that there will be a fix for this.

Since I installed Windows 10 I have been having these issues on and off. when I try to click on a drop down to access the choices i am unable to when I scroll on a window it scrolls back up as I try to scroll down, When trying to access things like the the system menus to chose a screen saver I chose "lock screen" then it will not allow me to scroll down to screen saver settings, as I scroll down it scrolls up faster then I can scroll down and I am unable to chose the screen settings.

Sometimes it happens and sometimes I am able but it has been a ongoing problem since installing Windows 10
I'm not sure I described the problem very well so I decided to make a YouTube video showing you what it does. You can see no matter what I do it it fights me or if I stop doing anything the scroll bar goes back to the top on it's own. You can see what it is doing here,

Got rid of Vista *finally* and installed XP from the recovery disk that came with my old computer. Everything works fine apart from whenever I move a window, the whole computer lags and the screen goes 'wavy'. Same whenever I scroll down a webpage, document etc. I haven't changed anything (apart from the screen resolution).

On the subject of screen resolutions, can you change it to 1680x1050 on XP, there's no setting for it?

Answer:Lagging while moving windows and scrolling?

When you reinstalled XP - did you also reinstall all correct drivers and make sure they are updated?

Check Device Manager - make sure there are no question marks or exclamation points

I have the very same problem after Windows 10 update. I rolled back the driver to a generic PS-2 with no results. I then downloaded a new Elan driver and still no scroll. My wife is **bleep** as she will not use the computer w/out the scroll. I guess my options are go back to windows 8.1 or buy her a new computer

Hey guys,
I just upgraded to windows 10 which feels really good so far. Unfortunately, I have this big issue that makes everything really annoying, like really! I can't scroll with two fingers like I used to do before. Actually, once out of every 30 times that I try, it works.
I tried googling it and I found some stuff that some people said worked for them, that I tried unsuccessfully. I was hoping some of you knows what to do about this, because it is getting really frustrating!
If it can help I have a Lenovo yoga pro 2 that I baught about 2 months ago.
Cheers!

Answer:Can I get some help with an issue when scrolling after the Windows 10 update?

On my Lenovo Flex 10, I use one finger to scroll on my touch screen. Even when new with W8.1. I never use the track pad. If that's your issue, there should be Dell specific settings for it, as on my Lenovo. Also, check against Dell's site as they probably have new drivers specific to W10.

This is kind of a weird issue that I run into periodically, and I think it is related to windows -- but I am not absolutely certain.

Let's say that I am looking at a web page (maximized) and I need to take some notes. So I open Notepad or Wordpad (not maximized, so that I can see web page below while typing my notes on the smaller notes page.

Now, the reason this works so well is that I can scroll either the maximized web page or the small Wordpad page just by hovering my cursor over the appropriate page. This means that I don't have to toggle back and forth between the two pages and both stay open so I can see them both.

The problem is (and I cannot figure out the cause/trigger) is that sometimes, after awhile, the page I am hovering over will not scroll unless that page is actually in focus. That means that I have to toggle back and forth between the two pages. And everything I toggle to the web page, I lose the ability to see the Wordpad page until I toggle back.

I was just wondering if anyone had see this before and/or knew why this happens. Am I doing something in Windows that suddenly changes the way the hover behavior works?

Thank you very much.

Answer:Scrolling on hover (Windows issue?)

Nevermind, all. I think I've found it.

I have a free utility on my computer called KatMouse. I originally installed it because EchoPro would not scroll in Windows 7.

It turns out that one of the advantages of this application is also allowing me to scroll a window that is visible but not active. Great for multi-taskers, like me.

The one thing I haven't figured out is that sometimes KatMouse stops working. Sometimes the solution is as simple as turning it off and on. But that doesn't always work.

Anyway, please disregard this question.
