Default Settings for 'Choose File To Upload', Displays 'Details' vs 'Thumbnails'

Question: Default Settings for 'Choose File To Upload', Displays 'Details' vs 'Thumbnails'

Windows XP & IE 8 .
Whenever I add an attachment to my emails, and even here on your website when I uploaded the attached pics, the 'Choose to Upload' pop-up window containing (in this case) my pics ALWAYS (but never used to) opens in the Details mode instead of Thumbnails where I can actually view the pics to be attached prior to attaching them.
I would like the default setting for this occurrence to obviously be in the Thumbnails mode.
In a related issue I would also like to be able to load more than one pic at a time when attaching pics to emails, etc...
Is there such a setting?
Thanks for the assistance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Default Settings for 'Choose File To Upload', Displays 'Details' vs 'Thumbnails'

The default is list, not details and no you can't change it that I know of and I'm pretty sure if not absolutely. I wish there was. One of those silly Windows things.
As to your second question, some websites employ technology that allows multiple uploads. The flash uploader here for instance. It's not something in XP that one can change.

I have seen a few threads similar to this problem on this forum and I believe I have tried all the possible solutions that I've seen, but the problem persists.

On my co-worker's PC (Win7 Pro, 64-bit, SP1), when he uses Internet Explorer to upload image files to a website, the "Choose File to Upload" dialog always opens in detail view. He'll switch to large thumbnails, look for the file he needs to upload, upload it, and then move on to the next upload (this particular website only lets you upload one file at a time, unfortunately), and the dialog resets to detail view. This is incredibly frustrating for him, especially because I don't have this problem on my (identical) PC.

I've gone through all the folder view settings and painstakingly checked all the Internet Options looking for what might be different between our two systems, and I'm coming up dry. I have tried messing with the registry, doing a System Restore or two, downgrading him from IE11 (which we were both using) to IE10, and it keeps happening.

This doesn't happen in Chrome, but unfortunately the one website we have to use is one of those "Designed for IE, not supported in any other browser" sites (ARGH).

Is there anything I'm not thinking of that could be causing this? His PC is brand-new (A Dell, like all of ours) from just a couple of months ago. He doesn't have any malware that I've been able to spot, and is not an Administrator on the computer (the problem also exists when ... Read more

Any ideas?

Hello,

Is it possible to choose a default location/folder to open when opening File Explorer from the task bar? Default is that it opens Quick access. I use OneDrive a lot, and would really like to see that I could set that to open that location.

Is it possible to set this? Would be a great feature if I can't already.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Choose a default location when opening File Explorer

Hello Muzzies,

You could set File Explorer to open to "This PC" instead if you like.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3...ck-access.html

Otherwise, you could use either tutorial below to pin any folder to the taskbar.

I downloaded an application to play .mid files, and unpacked the zip file into a subfolder of Program Files.  (The application is quite an old one, and doesn't have an installer.)  It works fine. Now I want to make this application my default player for .mid files.  When I follow the usual methods, I can browse to the application's .exe file, but when I click the "Open" button, the application I have selected is ignored and I am offered Windows Media Player as default instead.I have found that I can make the new application default by copying its .exe to my desktop, and performing the procedure on that copy.  But I'd rather not do that if I could understand what is preventing the application being used as default from where I have put it.I tried adding the subfolder of Program Files to my Path, but that makes no difference, even after restarting Vista.  Any ideas please?

Not sure if this will help you or not since the program is stand alone exe and not a Windows installed application. But its worth a try using this method.http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/how-to-create-new-file-type-association-in-windows-vista/

Answer:Win 8.1 File Association back to: Choose Default Program..

Very simple. Browse to the (a) file in question, right click the file, and then click properties. Then click the CHANGE button, and you can change it back to whatever application / program that you want the file to be opened with. By doing one file it will change the default association on all files with that extension.

I need my Windows 8 computer to stay on duplicate display all day long by default. It keeps reverting to extend. I'm a teacher and I'm showing powerpoints and pdfs all day long and it is annoying to hit the alt F8 key all day long to switch back to duplicate. Any simple solution? I can't find one.

Looking around it looks like at batch file could be written to make duplicate stay as the default... problem is I've never written an batch file but would like to if someone could walk me through it. It looks like the batch file needs to include: DisplaySwitch.exe /clone

I'm not sure how to write the batch file or where to save it to once it is written.

Any help to my problem would be appreciated.

I'm trying to figure out how to set the settings of a file upload dialog so it will alwasy display the objects (images in this case) as large icons or thumbnails instead of in the list view. The file upload is for uploading images to a web site and it's irritating to have to keep clicking on the folder view options and set it every time.

Since this is a file upload dialog and the <alt> key doesn't offer the standard explorer menu items I don't know how to set this. Also, I've tried to change the default settings for all folders but it doesn't change the settings on the file upload dialog.

Any tips would be appreciated!

Recently, my company started working with a company where they wanted to redirect from an internal Intranet Kiosk site to a publicly available application site. The site apparently (due to lack of something) does NOT have the ability to remove any File Upload
links when coming from the Kiosk URL.  The Kiosk computers are running Windows 7 Pro with various GPOs and registry keys locking them down to using Internet Explorer in Kiosk mode replacing the explorer.exe on the user account. The problem is we have
not been able to find a way to Disable "Choose File to Upload" dialogs in Internet Explorer 11. This seems like it should be a pretty straight forward option as you can disable File Downloads using GPOs but apparently disabling File Uploads isn't
something commonly done.
A number of blocks are in place, but there is always the fun the user could have of uploading files by using their Environmental Variables (Example: %WINDIR%\win.ini) that we would like to avoid.  In fact, I'd like to avoid any dialog to avoid any issues
with seeing Libraries or Desktop folder paths.
Given Kiosk Mode for Internet Explorer has been an age old feature, I'm amazed disabling "File Upload" isn't some default option when you set in Kiosk Mode.
Please assist!  Thanks!

I just did a reinstall of XP Pro and am having trouble with video files being "in use" when trying to move/delete them (only a several second lag, but it is annoying me). It has to do with a preview being generated in the details pane in the bottom left corner of Explorer. I eventually figured out how to turn off the preview option on my last install but have forgotten how I did it. Under folder options I have "do not cache thumbnails" unchecked. Is this the setting I need to change? Or is it somewhere else? It seems to me I need an option to not show a preview in the details pane.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer:How to Turn of Thumbnails in Details Pane?

I haven't done an XP install, but I have had problems like yours. Here is how I fix them without reinstalling, in case it may help? (The instructions may be different for XP.)

Thumbnails are used as icons when the folder is in Thumbnail view. This is usually not the problem, since they are usually cached after the first time. I turn them off by getting the Properties window for that folder. (I just go to the parent folder and right-click on the folder there, then choose Properties.) Then in one of the tabs, I find the Enable thumbnail view option and uncheck it. But, again, this is probably not the problem.

The preview thumbnail (actually, the whole details pane) can be turned off by unchecking View as Web Page in the View menu in one folder. Or, you can turn it off for all folders by going to View menu > Folder Options > General tab > choose Custom, then click the Settings button and in the View Web Content in Folders section, choose Only for folders where I select "as Web Page" [View menu]

If I want the details pane, but not the preview, I edit the HTML of the window. I don't know if you want to try this, it can be confusing, but here's what I do, just in case:
I right-click on the detail pane (or you can use the View menu), and click Customize this Folder... then choose create or edit HTML document. This allows me to customize that details pane. To remove only the worst case files from the preview, I see if I can find "var w... Read more

Answer:How come my View changes from Details to Thumbnails in Explorer for no reason???

I had the EXACT same problem. I've attached the text below on how to fix it.

Good luck
By default, Windows XP will remember the view settings for the 400 most recently used folders. After that, XP will begin overwriting the data of the oldest folder, and its view setting will be lost. The information is stored in the registry by two keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam

These keys can be modified to make XP remember more folder settings.

Open Windows Explorer and go to Tools--Folder Options--View--Advanced Settings. Ensure that "Remember each folder's view settings" is checked.

Open Regedit and go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell.

Right-click on "Shell", then follow to New--Key--DWORD Value.

Name this item "BagMRU Size" (without quotation marks, but with a space between BagMRU and Size).

Double-click BagMRU Size, give it a Decimal value of 2000, then click OK.

Now go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam.

Create another BagMRU Size DWORD Value for "ShellNoRoam". Again, give it a Decimal value of 2000, then click OK.

You will have two "BagMRU Size" values equal to 0x000007d0 (2000).

Close the registry and reboot.

Windows XP will now remember 2000 folder view settings instead of 400

Always remember to back up your registry.

Things I've tried:

1. I have Haali Media Splitter installed (from CoreAVC) options>>explorer integration (yes)>>Thumbnails offset (10000)
2. WMP Playback Pack
3. DivX Preview

None of those worked. I'm running Windows 7 Professional. The KMPlayer is the default to play my MKV files (works great), but I can change that to Windows Media Player if needed to show the details and thumbnails. Any suggestions?

And I can't install DivX Plus Codec Pack like other people have recommend because my laptop isn't connected to the internet (no wireless). To install the other things I've just put the installer on a USB and then installed them from the USB onto my laptop.

Vista Home Premium SP2. When browsing folders of digital photos, Explorer will load up all of the thumbnails, and as soon as it has the last one loaded, 95% of the photos will revert to the default icon and I'll end up with thumbnail views of only 2 or 3 images out of 75 or 80. If I change the thumbnail size, it'll "rescan" the folder, load all thumbs, and then revert 95% random ones back to the default icon. This makes it nearly impossible to organize my photos and is VERY annoying and problematic!

Hi,
how can I change this?

Some background - this may not be the issue I need to solve at the end of the day:

I believe the location is causing crashes, since I blew up lots of Library registry values (in an attempt to remove them from the OS), and I think it defaults to the library page.

eg, 2shared - file upload and sharing
[edit: stupid editor auto href'd the text... bah]

crashes IE and Firefox (not Chrome for some reason... possibly because it uses its own code?) when I click the browse button (same for any "browse" button that spawns a native find-your-file thing).

It may be something else, but anyway...

edit: If I disable "Expand to Current Folder" in Win Explorer, the crash does not occur. So perhaps it is trying to expand to a folder that is broken?
I want to keep "Expand to Current Folder" on, though, as I like the feature.

Answer:Default "Browse for file" location in web browser "choose file" box

Hello Silmeria,

It may be best to do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before you blew up the registry to see if that may sort this for you. Afterwards, you could use the tutorial below instead to remove libraries without blowing up the registry like that.

Libraries Folder - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane

I have installed FileZilla server 0.9.41 on Windows Server 2008 R2. When I upload files to the FTP site, the time
of the file uploaded is incorrect. For example if I upload a file modified 10:37:10 PM it becomes 5:37:00 PM on the FTP site. It is always 5 hours earlier, and truncates the seconds. This makes version control of files difficult. Is there some configuration
change that can fix this, or is this a Windows Server issue? The server time is configured for the Central time zone in The United States.

Hi all,

I have been searching the web for an answer to this question since first getting Windows 10 last year. I would like my File Explorer to open using the "List" view rather than the current default of "Details". I have seen many responses that reference how to change the default view template from Documents to Music, Pictures, ..., but none that actually address this question. Is there a way to do this at all in Win10?

I'm thinking of changing Documents template for Details to remove all columns except for Name. The Details view as it currently has been useful in the past so I hate to lose it all together.

Am I SOL in my request? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Want to change File Explorer default View from "Details" to "List"

Open File Explorer, in the menu bar click view > choose your view (mine is medium icons)

To get the menu bar (if you don't have it showing) put the cursor in the top window bar, right click, click Menu bar. On mine it's the first choice.

Hey Guys,

First time poster. Here's a bit of a briefing.

Note: using XP!

I've been importing videos from my video camera and the thumbnail has always shown up as first frame from the video. About three months ago i got a new hard drive, so i transferred all the clips...They all still showed the first frame as the thumbnail...

However, not that i've been importing these past three months they only show up as the default movie icon. I thought this wouldn't be that great of an issue, I simply ignored it and carried on.

Now that i have bulked up on my video camera collection (3812 video clips to this date in past three months) it has made it virtually impossible to make this a quick activity when wanting to find certain files, i have to individually watch each and every one until i stumble across the file i want! Which is a massive time waster! And it's only bound to get worst as time goes on.

I decided to reinstall WMP 11, DivX Codecs...No help, then i went and downloaded and installed various codec packs, still no help. I then uninstalled some random codecs in the hope that it wasn't a clash of conflict amongst the lot.

I googled the issue, a lot of the findings linked me to this forum, and found how various people were able to fix the problem by run - > REGSVR32 SHMEDIA.DLL, still no help.

I then followed the proceedings for the Windows Registry Edit in relation to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE as located at

Hello,

I have a lot of files on my computer, and have been noticing that when I look in a folder, often times the files are showing with icons. I prefer to have this set to the list view. Anyone know where to change this?

Thanks,

Oh come on, what's up with this? will i have to go digging in the registry? I'd llike the standard windows fax and scan program when i click the hardware button on my scanner not photoshop, that feels like overkill for regular documents.

Answer:How do i choose default app for scanner

One question, When you installed the scanner software, did it give you the option of specifying your viewing or editing program? Some do and some don't.

Every time I go to open a jpg or pdf, it always asks me what I want to open it with. I've done the Right Click, choose default program, etc.... It never works. What setting am I missing???

As a photog, I am opening jpgs all day, every day and it's extremely frustrating.

When I go under Open With and select Choose default Program I get this message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel. "

Now it does this with whatever file I try to do Choose default Program, also when I try to view a jpg in a winrar file it opens in notepad.

Everything else works fine, if I double click a file it opens normally. This all started when I installed AVG 2011, uninstalling doesn't work and I don't have a system restore that will go far back enough to fix this. So any ideas short of reinstalling?

Hi,

As background information, please note that I have Office 2013 installed.

Several issues are occurring when I try choose my default apps:

1) Calendar
The Calendar app is installed and works, but it is not set as my default. When I click "Choose a default," I get the popup that says, "There is no installed app for this type of file or protocol."

2) Maps
Same as Calendar.

3) Email
It is defaulted to Outlook (desktop). I thought that was strange but no big deal, I would change it to the Mail app. But when I try to change it, the only app available is my Outlook desktop app. Why isn't the Mail app listed?

4) Video Player
I have VLC Metro Player installed and would have thought it would be in the list of possible apps to choose, but it is not. Is this normal or is there something else I would have to do to enable VLC as the default?
Thanks!

I've been looking all over google for an answer to this, I couldn't find one. Thinking to myself, this is a first. Anyway I'd like it if someone had an answer for this one. I run a computer repair business and would like to add some extra metadata to some of my files for accounting purposes.

Example.I have many pictures/pdfs of invoices from suppliers. I'd like to be able to have a column in windows explorer for the total price of those invoices and I'd like to call it "Total Price" that way I can sort them by price.

Any help would be appreciated, but please don't suggest I use the categories that are already there.

Not a big deal, but rather strange nontheless...

I have a Dell XPS R450 tower running NT4 SP6a, and about a month ago, this strange behavior suddenly just cropped up -- when I select the "Details" option from the "View" menu, nothing shows in the window, although the text at the bottom margin of the window will display the correct number of files contained therein. If I view by any other option such as "List", "Small icon" or "Large icon", everything is fine.

Can anyone suggest what to do to fix this, and/or give me any clues as to what the heck is going on? I made no changes to my system to predicate this behavior -- it just popped up out of the blue (at least, as far as I can recall).

Thanks,

Joe B.

Answer:NT4 - Folder "View by Details" displays no files

Hiya

I know this may sound like a simple question, but you could have messed up the columns. The columns have
draggable widths, and you can drag them in such a way
that nothing is visible.

Try grabbing hold of the left-hand edge of the leftmost
column and dragging it rightwards. Or something.

I have tons of folders with tons of photos and I would like to change the view so that all photos are displayed as large thumbnails, but I don't want to have to keep clicking that option in the view pane everytime I go into a folder, since I edit and delete MANY photos in many folders it would be nice if all photos displayed as large thumbnalis in ALL of my folders. I looked online and everyone said to go to Folder Option>View and select the option in there but there is no option to display folders/photos as large thumbnails.

Answer:How to changes windows explorer default folder view to large thumbnails?

Try right clicking on some blank space where the photos are listed
Hover over view and try different ones.

Weekly I upload two bowling stat sheets (GIF format) to bowl.com. It is the only time I perform uploads. Each time I select 'update' then the 'browse' button on their site to specify the files to be uploaded, my system (XP Pro) defaults to a directory that has multiple GIF and JPEG files (I download to this directory regularly) but it is not the directory where my bowling files are stored. I would like my system to remember this location so I don't have to back out of the other directory when the 'choose file' screen displays for the upload (I use IE 6.0). Will this require a registry change or can it be done some other way? I have made registry changes on a limited basis and only with detailed instructions.

Searching XP help and IE help has not worked for me. So, Can anyone out there point me in the right direction? Thanks to all

Answer:How Do I Specify A Default Directory To Upload From

Everytime you upload from your computer to the Internet, you'll have to find the folder in which your files are located. There is no fix for it, and it's not actually a problem, just a hassle to have to navigate to that folder on your hard drive every single time. I know what you mean.

There is no way to make your upload to a web site always default to where your files are on your hard drive when you click on the Browse/Upload button from any web site.

Then again.. the only way it would work for you, you would have to leave that web site open at all times, so that way when you upload, it'll automatically reopen that same folder. But we all know, that won't happen.

Every computer user has the same issue, and I'm not sure there is anything to do about it. As a matter of fact, many programs that you use while offline will automatically save to their default locations, even if you specifiy a different after you close it and then open it again.

Hello!

I'd prefer to have details for all folders.
It looks like I found a solution for the annoying auto changing of folder types:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

;This registry script has been made by Vishal Gupta - AskVG.com

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell]
"FolderType"="NotSpecified"

But I also want the view to stay details even if I change it in explorer's view menu to look at something. In this case currently the setting is immediately saved somewhere and next time I get that view. I want it to show details the next time I visit it...

(I have also disabled thumbs.db and desktop.ini via registry settings.)

Answer:Default to details view for all folders, even after change

Hello Avada,

If you like, you can use the method in the tutorial below to set a default folder view of "Details" with a "General Items" template. The folder view will be applied to all folders and remembered. If you make any changes to the folder view of a folder afterwards, then that change will still be remembered for that folder.

When I try to create any new event from the Windows calendar app, the default details are:
How long: All day
How often: Once
Reminder: 18 hours
Status: Free
While the "How often" default detail is fine. I would like to change the default details of How long, Reminder, and Status.
I normally do not want any reminders, and I rarely have any events lasting all day. And I almost always have status as "busy" events.
So whenever I create new calendar events, I have to manually change these default settings. And it can be pretty annoying as well.
It would definitely be a nice feature, if each user can change the default calendar details to the setting used the most, so that they can minimize the manual input of details whenever they create an event.
Any method of changing the default details for the menus specified?

Windows 10 insists that the camera folder on my phone is going to be viewed as though it contains music and won't allow changing its default to just generic file details.

Thus the details view header has a bunch of categories that are useless for photos, track name, duration etc. To get the date I have to right click on the header and check Date Authored. It's a DCIM folder for *photos* so why is it defaulting to settings for music?

Is there a way to hack this to make it by default use the general files details view for all folders, no matter the type of files in them? 99.99% of the time I only need to see the file name, type, size and date, no matter what kind of file it is.

You must do an awful lot of copying of awfully big files because most of what I do goes so fast that you don't even get to see the dialog! And when it does take a little longer I've usually got better things to do than sit and stare at it especially as all it tells me most of the time is that it's still "calculating".

I doubt that this is possible through the registry (though I will have a delve around if I get the time) which probably means it's not possible period. I guess you'd have to use a third party utility to do your file management if you were that determined.

Is there a way to ensure that when I open explorer, it defaults to details view?? I've tried opening explorer and changing it to details, holding the control key when closing it and when I open explorer, it displays in details view, until you click on a folder (flash drive) and it changes to icon view when showing the contents of the flash drive. Hey there,

Started using my freshly installed Windows 8.1 Pro this week...
After a few days I started noticing something odd and have no idea why this started happening.

When i go to a file (any filetype...i tried like 10..) and click "choose default program..." in the context menu, the following error message will always come up:

Sure i can go to Config panel > Select default programs etc.
But this is odd... since i am 100% confident it used to work fine before.
I already did a 'sfc /scannow' checkup with an original 8.1 Pro x64 image but it says integrity is completely fine.

Any idea what might be causing this?

Could it be a random piece of software i uninstalled which was perhaps freeware and did not state it was Windows 8 compatible, leaving a cluttered registry key which is affecting this command from my context menu?
(A little far fetched perhaps...but i really can't think of anything else).

So, you are not getting a bootloader to choose??

If you installed XP after W7 was installed, you need to repair the W7 bootloader.

Does anyone have any idea what this is and how to fix it?

I've had this problem a few days where I simply can't set a default browser (or any other default software from the settings) anymore. It let's me to go to the list and choose, say, Google Chrome, but then doesn't save my choice. I can revert to Microsoft's default settings in general, when the choice will stay as Edge. This bugs me the most when clicking on URL links in other software, they open up randomly in both Chrome (which I actively use) and Edge (which is the current default).

I have tried to set Chrome as the default browser from its own settings, too, but to no avail. Would also very much want to use VLC Player as the default for videos, but Win10 is being a pain in the butt and doesn't let me do it.
Wondering if anyone else has experienced the same? Trying to google for similar cases was pretty much impossible, at least for me.
If it's of any help, I'm sporting a Lenovo Y50-70 laptop with Intel Cote i7-4710HQ.

There are many threads on the topic which has been addressed many times. Do please search and read some.

In general it's not a problem I've had, but is a problem in Win 10 not seen in previous versions in this way.

E.g.
Default apps being reset by Windows - Windows 10 Forums

Clues:
1. From Win 8 on you can't set defaults from within a program. That is, you can try, but they aren't saved. Only one or two progs give a warning this is not the way to do it.
2. A recent update was reported and acknowledged by MS to cause defaults not to be saved for some users (not all).
3. Recently I found that I got notifications in safe mode that 3 default choices (image files) were causing a conflict and the defaults were reset to MS's choice.
4. Users updating back in November to 10586 found their default choices reset.
5. People with old versions of a couple of desktop programs find this happening e.g. Winzip

I currently have Firefox, IE and Edge installed on my PC. Firefox is set as the default browser. When I go into the default apps setting screen and click to change my default browser, only IE and Firefox are on the list, so I can't select Edge.

However, if I click the "Reset" button to reset all of the default apps, Edge becomes the default browser, but obviously that resets all of my other default apps too, which is a pain. As soon as I choose either IE or Firefox as my default browser, I am unable to select Edge again as it's not on the list, so all I can do is hit "Reset" again.

What's also strange is that if I right-click on a HTML file and choose "open with", Edge doesn't appear anywhere on that list either.

I've tried the system file checker, but it said that everything was fine. With Edge not being something that I can uninstall and reinstall, I don't know how I can go about fixing this.

Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

My "size" option appears to have gone missing, and I'm not sure why.

I searched with google, as well as these forums, though I could find no answer to my problem. (Though that doesn't mean one hasn't been posted; my searching skills may just be crappy.)

Regardless, has anyone had this, or a similar issue, occur? Or does anyone know how to add your own "details" to choose from so I can get it back manually?

I saw this: Folder Size for Windows Explorer

I probably need something along those lines, but for the size option instead...

Also, if I'm somehow just staring at the list and missing it even after scanning through each item, please let me know. (Picture included to rule out/verify idiocy on my part.)

The view on CDs and my phone do not get set to detailed view, and do not show the modified date when is set it that way. Worse, the thing does not "stick" on my HTC One X+ phone, reverting to that view every time I change folders by clicking on the triangles to go back or open a new folder. I have to set a new view every time.

The "apply to folders" option is dimmed. when I go to tools->folder options->view.
Worse, I have set all five types the way I want them and it works for the hard drives, but these defaults are ignored for CDs or DVDs I burn or for connecting my phone to the computer. Even more annoying, the stupid "group by" gets turned on for CDs and DVDs.

How do I set the final "hidden" default? I want it so that "group by" never gets turned on unless I tell it to, although completely disabling that annoying feature would be acceptable. I'd also like every window to default to "details" except possibly the "my computer" or whatever they want to call it in Windows 7 Professional that you get with <windows key>-<e>.
Every other window should have details view and include the dates.
Nothing here helps

I'm on W2K, and something that has bugged me for years is that (other than in Excel, etc), I can't set the default view for "Open Files" dialog to be Details instead of List...and thus almost every time I have to use it, I have to first set view to Details in order to find my file, which is a real PITA! List view, is in my opinion, totally worthless once you have more than a handful of files in a folder... Thus...I'm wondering, is there some Registry hack, or other means that would allow me to do this?

Thanks for any pointers!

I'm a registered poster on these forums, and I sign in with my Microsoft/Office username and password.  But my Profile has some old information, especially in my default signature.
How do I change my default signature?  There's no sub-window for it when I go to Edit my Profile.  Where is it?
Is there a deeper Edit Profile page that is not easy to access?  There doesn't seem to be a link to it anywhere.
Funny how MS's own forums are not as good as the standard forum style so many people use.

I have searched the web. Maybe it can't be done.

I'm on XP Pro SP2.
I use "Details" view as my default in Windows Explorer, and would love to have that be the default view for all my File Open and File Save dialogs, but they always default to "List" view < grrrrrrr >.

Some MS apps can be forced to keep Details view *for that session only* by setting to Details and holding down the CTRL key while processing the first file, but after re-opening the app, I'm back to List view.

Whoever at Microsoft made the executive decision to make List the default needs to have itching powder sprinkled in his shorts.

I'm hoping that with all the combined knowledge on this forum, someone has a solution.

Thanks -
gG

Hi, An observation, not a question. I wanted to set Thunderbird as my default email client again (after having reset defaults whilst looking for a problem).

So I set it as my default email client in 'System', 'Default Apps'.

This proved not to be the same as using Control Panel, Default Programs, and setting it as handling all file types it could.

(In particular, the first still did not mean Pop Peeper would find a client it could launch, whilst the second did).

I'm wondering if this will prove the same for other programs.

Answer:'Settings' Default is not= Control Panel 'Default Programs' - All

System, Default Apps??? I don't even see that option.

I've configured a fillable pdf document with an automated email address submission button, which all seems to be working just fine. However, when I test it, Windows doesn't seem to know which default email client to use for email purposes.

I know that to change your default email client you:

1) The settings are located in Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Set Programs Access and Defaults>Custom
2) Click the arrows pointing down to expand the Custom entry.
3) The email programs you have installed on your computer should be listed here. Place a check next to your preferred email client.
4) Press the OK button.
5) Exit the Control Panel.

My setting appears to be correctly set to Mozilla Thunderbird, but when I invoke the Submit (email) button on my pdf form, I get:

What additional tweak(s) do I need to make from here to integrate my email client ( I could have sworn I was done . . .). Thanks!

Answer:Changing Default Email Client - Choose Profile?

This posting has elicited a surprising absence of replies, so I thought I would try to resurface it, and append a little bit of additional information.

I tried initiating the automated email address submission feature again, but without great success. I reset the default email manually, and when I invoked the email submission, but that generated this dialog box.

From there, clicking Continue generated the following output from the Microsoft Exchange.

However, I still can't understand, why if I've set Mozilla Thunderbird as the default email application - why the email submission script doesn't pass the form through to Mozilla Thunderbird. Does any of this additional information help?

Hi I'm new here have found this web site very useful, would like to thank everyone for all information provided.

i have spent a few hours trying to fix this today and need some help

when i right click on a JPG file i get open with then click choose default program at the bottom of the menu list.

and i get this

how do i remove the %1 i tried so many different things in regedit,

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg\OpenWithList

and removed stuff from here to no avail.

Do you guy & girls have any idea how i can get rid of the %1 ?

Answer:Fixing the list of Open with / choose default program JPG

Hello pritpalspall, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you like, you could download and merge the .reg file for the listed jpg option in the tutorial below to restore it's default association and registry entries that should also restore the default Open with entries as well.

Afterwards, you'll need to set Windows Photo Viewer back as the default program though since the default is the modern Photos app.

whenever i right click on a file and go to 'open with' and click on 'choose default program', i get get the following error below:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."

now i am an experienced user and i am in the IT field but for the life of me i cant figure this one out. the following are some examples of file types, avi, jpeg, mpeg, txt, etc...
these files do indeed open fine with the program i have set as the default program for these files. they are also properly associated in the default programs option in vista. I sometimes for one reason or another want to open a file with a different program which is why i go to 'open with' but i dont want to have to continue to keep changing my default programs to open files.
now i have gone in the registry and manually added some of the programs to the open with context menu for some of the file extensions but i dont want to do this for all of them.
i suspect that there is some corrupt/missing dll file or reg key some where but i have yet to track it down.
everything else runs fine. vista runs great except for this 1 problem. if anyone knows a fix or even the location of the dll/reg key/file that may be corrupt then i would greatly appreciate it.
i do have backups that i can use to restore the corrupt/missing files if needed.

i am running vista 32bit w/service pack 1 and all updates as of today on vista and all... Read more

Answer:Open with...choose default program error on Vista.

Hello Yankz23, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if doing a System Restore using a restore point dated before you got this error may help fix it for you.

I get the same error,
when I right click on a file and hover the mouse on Open With option, then in the Open With context Menu, I want to choose default program for that file, it shows me an error saying:

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action, please install a program or if, one is already installed create an association in the Default programs control panel.

But I don't want to create an association in control panel every time i want to change the default program, I just want to do it by right-clicking on a file and from "open with" menu, selecting the "Choose Default Program".

I went to go set photoshop as the default for opening a jpeg, and I noticed this weird option on the list that says %1. I don't know how to get rid of it it is very annoying. I tried cleaning the registry with CCleaner and removing "%1;" from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileAssociation Killlist property. Nothing has worked so far, I'm stumped. What the hell is %1 anyway?

Answer:Weird option appearing in "Choose Default Program"

In normal operation, %1 is the first parameter passed to a program, %2 is the second parameter passed to a program, etc.

Check this out to see if it helps.  I know it says XP, the the concept is the same: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/OpenWith.htm

On Windows 8.1 computers with IE 11 installed (version 11.0.9600.18350, updates version: 11.0.32) we experience choose default browser website (one tab in IE) each time when we open IE (after restart computer). Below screenshot in Polish language but You
can see what I mean.

Then we I click blue button to choose default browser and choose IE new window is opening which looks like Edge - full screen mode with address bar on the bottom of the screen.

Two questions then:
1. How to fix it that IE will remember default browser and not ask each time for this
2. Is there any Edge browser on Windows 8.1 ?

When I right click, open with, choose default program button, it gives me an error says: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."
I fixed Windows 7 fix association files, but error still there!

NOTE:
Only Open with and Choose default program button NOT WORKING, but everything like .txt, .exe, .mp3, etc is WORKING, just the BUTTON NOT WORKING!

NOTE 2:
I run a Registry Cleaner before this error, and I don't have BACKUPS!

Thanks!

Hi,

Just a fleeting visit...

Under File, Properties, Summary I need to change the "Company".
I've successfully changed the "Name" (under Tools, Options, User Information), but cannot change the company.

I've tried changing the Normal.dot template too, and when opening the template file thereafter, the company appeared correct, however, if I open MS Word itself, the company is incorrect.

So, aside from the Name, how can I change the defaulting values in a document's property sheet (preferably without re-installing)?

Thanks.

When I go to preferences, I can see an offer, which would allow me to get 1 TB OneDrive when switching to Office 365.
I already have such Office abo. But I am not able to Switch to my Business Account.
When I go t o the Option: OneDrive-Upload preferences within the app, I come to the camera upload Options and there only my "email" account is visible there. And I have both accounts (private and Business) on same account.
Does anybody know, how I can swith from Standard OneDrive to Business?

Greetings,

I just noticed that my desktop background slideshow hasn't been working lately, so I went into the personalize menu to fix it (seems to happen to me from time to time, usually an easy fix.)

A screen capture of what I see when I go to change the desktop background can be found here:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...groundHang.png
In short, everything seems to work fine, but where the list of images is supposed to be, I only get a notification that it is loading, but it never seems to actually load. Additionally the Picture Location dropdown box is blank.

I can use the Picture location dropdown to select between the standard Windows Desktop Background and Solid Colors lists, which both load up just fine. But if I hit Browse and try to look at My Pictures/Desktops, which is where I have all the images I actually like using as a background, it does not load.

Windows can, however, access at least one of these images - when I select my saved theme, it does load up the image in the lowest position of an alphabetical list. Whether this is symptomatic of the bug or if it's just the image it happened to be displaying when the slideshow went wonky, I don't know, but I've checked and it won't reselect a different desktop image if that image is removed from the folder; it swaps back to a Windows default one.
