How did my Windows key become disabled?

Question: How did my Windows key become disabled?

I have recently somehow disabled my windows key. I have tried going to Microsoft and doing the "Fix it" thing for the registry and it does not work. I have tried this numerous times. Could it possibly be the keyboard I'm using? It use to work however with the same keyboard. I use Avast Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes and iObit system care as my general cleaners. Not sure if any of those have a default setting to disable the button. Thoughts / Suggestions please?!?!

Preferred Solution: How did my Windows key become disabled?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: How did my Windows key become disabled?

Do you mean Windows is asking you to activate again? What version of Windows are you running?

MalwareBytes real-time protection is off and cannot be turned on. The same goes for Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Update. This never happened before. Also, I want to clean my laptop for any other things that may or may not be related to this issue.

I would appreciate any help and a step-by-step process. Thank you.

Hi, only recently have I been having these problems. I've run all of the malware removal software you've suggested but with no results. I've updated windows and tried conventional methods of re-enabling Windows firewall through control panel and/or services. Two of the error messages I get while trying to activate the firewall are as follows.

1. Double-clicking firewall under control panel yields...
- Windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running, would you like to start the windows firewall (ICS) service?
>>Yes<<
-Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall (ICS) service.

2. Starting Windows Firewall from services
- Could not start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ICS)service on local computer.
Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.

My second problem involves my nvidia control panel failing to open (I'm not sure if this may be related). I've removed all nvidia drivers and re-installed the most current chipset, and GPU drivers. Upon launch I receive an error message stating that nvidia control panel has encountered a problem and "needs to close" followed by the options to either send an error report or not (you know the drill).

A third problem I'm having not stated in the topic title but almost definitely relevant is the inability to created system restore points. To make matters worse, there are no cur... Read more

a toshiba laptop, windows vista basic, started it and was going to take off norton and mcafee it came with and put a coujple of programs on so went to the accounts and click to disable the uac so it wouldn't ask about administrator all the time and went to restart the computer and now it won't bring windows up, acts like it is trying but then just gives you a choice of F2 OR F12. I tried safe mode and when you try to get into the admin account it says it has been disabled and if I try the account that had the name on it it just acts like it is going to try to boot but just goes as far as giving you a choice for the F2 OR F12, I tried the guest account same thing, am I going to have to put the system back on again or is there a way to get bvack in? I tried system restore it says there is no restore point, tried the last know good configuration and it didn't work. tried the fix startup problems and it went through a few things when I clicked finish it still didn;'t start, Can someone help me with this? If I have to do a clean install there is a recovery disk with it and a driver disk do you do it the same as you would windwos xp? Please hellp When I first started it it started up fine, I must have turned the account off not knowing it. I went into the user account and disabled the UAC and clicked ok and it said it had to restart so I said ok and thats when all this happened.

Answer:Windows Vista basic-disabled the UAC -won't startup now-says account disabled-Please

Yes, a restore disk with restore your PC back to its clean state as if you got it new. Not sure why its preventing you from logging in, some sort of configuration error. Pleasse note, if you use the restore disk, you lose any data on the HD.

If data is important, try using a Live Linux CD and boot from that, then you can access the HD and copy files of it before using the restore CD.

Good morning.

Events:

I just started having some problems on my PC. I'm using Windows 10, x64, Professional edition. Non-secure boot.

I got a notification from Windows to the effect of "Warning you are not running any security software".

I immediately tried to open Windows Defender but what I got instead was all sliders disabled. On opening my Updates tab I saw the message "Some settings are managed by your organization".

On trying to open Windows Security Center I didn't get anything. Checking services showed me it had been set to disabled.

Steps taken so far:

I tried setting it back to Automatic delayed start and restarting the service but immediately it was disabled again.

At this point I was running a malwarebytes scan. Malwarebytes found a "Chromebrowser.exe" PUP which I removed.

On a rescan it has so far yet to detect anything.

Checking Group Policy shows all entries are set to default "Not Configured" except one for automatic removal which I disabled myself when I first installed Windows 10.

Changing group policy settings for Allow Telemetry under Data collection and Telemetry (under Computer Configuration, Admin templates, Windows components) to full, then disabling again resulted in the "Some settings are managed by organizatio" notice going away, the previously disabled "Get Started" button for Insider Program became enabled again.

Possible cause of infection:

Hello guys, this is my first post here. I have problem last few days. It could be some sort of malware or virus which cant be detected with AVG antivirus or Ad aware. This lap top hasnt been connected online for quite a while and problems started after used my USB flash disk. After that i couldnt open Task Manager(neighter with right click on task bar - text faded, nor with ctrl-alt-delete) or regedit. Also i cant boot into safe mode (when it starts, suddenly blue screen appears for a milisecond and computer restarts). I cant start AVG system scan, it reports that "application cannot run due to an error while verifying its electronic certificate". I can run AVG guard though. There was problem with C disk (i couldnt open it with double click and i had to use "explore" ). I resolved it by deleting "autorun.ini" file thru command prompt (it was hidden file and, another problem that occured, i cant edit folder options to make hidden files visible). There is also problem with language bar which is disabled and cannot be re-enabled cause its button is faded, though i dont care much about it.

I manage to enter to Task manager and regedit using trick with gpedit.msc. In "User configuration/Administrative templates/System/Ctrl+Alt+Del options/Remove task manager", default value is"not configured". I put disabled and i can use Task manager OR regedit again, but ONLY once! After i open and close ONE of those, i cant re-open it withou... Read more

It sounds very much like a virus. If you can get on the internet google regtools.vbs that script file should get your regedit working again but don't know for how long if it is a virus.

Heya! This is my third time doing this (*shame*). I've been pretty good about safe searching, but made a poor decision last night.
Now I'm paying for it and my desktop is disabled, firefox is disabled, my user settings are restricted so I can't alter files or access task manager or settings, helpful websites such as this one are blocked, security updates fail to work for my anti virus/spyware, most hyperlinks that work, take me to a different destination, and many of my programs such as hijack this and others do not load.
After booting in safe mode, tricky backdoor browsing and deleting some files I think were bad, I could get hjt and DSS to run in normal mode. I did all of what I could in the pre-posting steps, but many of them could not be completed. My apologies for that and for deleting some of the malicious files prematurely, but it was the only way I felt I could get a worthwhile log. You guys have never let me down, so here I am asking for your help again!

So here's the DSS log. I copied from my computer via a flash drive...

This is a neighbors pc that is really trashed. I cleaned it up less than a year ago and now it is a mess. She has a couple of teenagers so who knows what they are doing on it.

Many symptoms, including:

Bogus security warnings that tries to send them to antispywareupdates.net
Task manager disabled. I fix the registry value and it resets immediately
Cannot use run-regedit, but I can use regedit from explorer

I am logged in as Administrator in Safe Mode.

Problem solved and this little pc is on the road to recovery.

I used a combo of ad-aware, spybot, AVG but the trick was using SDFix first. That helped kill the bogus security warning/redirect and fixed the disabled task manager and the disabled windows explorer.

hi, this is the tenth time i have tried to post this as my computer keeps freezing up.

The problem started when i logged onto my PC the other day. before i logged onto my user account a "googleupdate.exe" application error box appeared. when i got onto my account a black box appeared on the screen briefly aswell as a message saying something about "personalising DCOM service ( i disabled DCOM service when i seen the message"). i connected to the internet and went to google. everything was normal up until i clicked on a search result, which opened up a new tab with a completely irrelevant page such as myspace or britannia search. I then noticed that my Mcafee total protection 2009 had been disabled and would not re-open. i was not able to open any anti-malware programs, aswell as HJT. sometimes the screen will just go black, forcing me to restart. task manager and regedit are also disabled by admin ( i am the administrator). IE also tries to open on its own occasionally.

Hi, I have never posted before, so I am trying to do this correctly. Here is a brief description of some of the strange things happening. It all began with the error messages in IE "page cannot be displayed". Was the only computer on the wireless network having problems. Started being re-directed to websites not of my choosing. The words "windows-click" were always in the new unwanted web addresses. When I tried to use the copy and paste function to manually go to the websites the paste function was disabled. I tried to do a system restore. Could pick a date but could not initialize the program. The "next" button simply would not "push". I could click it over and over and nothing. Like it wasn't even there. Disk defrag gets an error message. Disk defrag could not start. I had to post this message from a different computer because every time I would hit the post button IE would "encounter an unexpected problem and need to close". Many times I would be at a site about removing viruses and IE would abruptly shut down and just "disappear" off the screen with no error messages or warning. I was unable to install Hijackthis from my computer directly. When I burned it to a disc and tried to install it from that I received an error message saying that the disc was corrupt. My computer has been freezing completely forcing me to hard reboot. I may be paranoid but it seems that every time I take a step to fix my computer the vi... Read more

I've been searching all over the interwebs and have found several tips on how to fix the task manager and regedit, but nothing has worked so far. I CAN enable them, but they just get disabled again after a few seconds. I've had this problem for a few months now. I'm not sure how it started, because I was away at college, and then I came back to my PC being all messed up.More recently, I came back home again yesterday, and now, right-clicking folders CRASHES MY COMPUTER! What the hell! I searched Google and found a few webpages about the problem but haven't really found anything that seems... relevant. One site talks about DivX, another talks about some windows update... I dunno. I haven't really tried to fix this problem yet, but I'm sure it's unrelated to my other ones. Besides, it doesn't seem like I can fix it without regedit and my task manager anyway.Someone on another forum told me to run ComboFix so I did, but I dunno what to do with the info it searched up, so I'll just post it here.ComboFix 09-05-24.01 - Jefferson Lam 05/24/2009 13:39.1 - NTFSx86Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.2.1252.1.1033.18.2046.1537 [GMT -7:00]Running from: c:\documents and settings\Jefferson Lam\Desktop\ComboFix.exeAV: ESET NOD32 Antivirus 3.0 *On-access scanning disabled* (Updated) {E5E70D32-0101-4F12-8FB0-D96ACA4F34C0}.((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( Other Deletions )))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))... Hey community, I have a flex 4-1570 notepad and whenever I am trying to switch to tablet mode, the physical keyboard doesn't disable. That's rather annoying because whenever I try to put it down on an uneven surface, random keys will activate. Would anybody know how to fix this? Thank you in advance!

I was having a problem with the message "Windows Security Alert Warning! Potential Spyware Operation!" popping up. I found this forum in an online search and followed the instructions to download "Super anti spyware". I followed the instructions and did the scan and that particular problem seemed to be fixed.

But now I have no control panel. If I press "contrl-alt-delete" it tells me that the "tast manager has been disabled by the administrator" and if I try to go to "add/remove programs" it tells me that "this problem has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this comptuer".

So evidently I didn't get rid of all of the problem. What else can I do to fix this? Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi there,

I posted a thread in 'Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help' back in April about problems I was having with my laptop (http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...d-etc-etc.html). To summarise, the main problems I'm having are...

- Windows Firewall is disabled and when I double click on 'Windows Firewall' in the Control Panel a message comes up saying "Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?". Then I can enable Firewall, but on rebooting it reverts back to being automatically disabled.
- The taskbar is often grey and old-style rather than blue.
- When I try and play music in Media Player it says 'Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly'. I reinstalled the driver from Acer's website and now I here the usual beeps, clicks and the Windows start up sound but still can't play audio. Similar problems with Itunes, and audio from Youtube.
- I can't write CDs.
- When I double click on System in Control Panel instead of the System page coming up, a box comes up saying 'Data Execution Prevention - To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Name: Run a DLL as an App. Publisher: Microsoft Corporation.'
- My wireless connection d... Read more

Anyone know how to solve this? Or could you recommend a forum where someone might know?
Thanks!

Hi, It looks like there is a bug in latest 2.51 BIOS update for my T430s: if I set Config->USB->USB UEFI BIOS Support to Disabled in BIOS Settings then WLAN modem and Bluetooth do not work because antenna is disabled as well.  It looks like there are no way to activate antenna after the system started.  I have dual boot with Ubuntu and Win7, so both systems have the same issue.  By default that option is activated/enabled, so many users may not experience the problem unless disable boot from USB devices. Thanks,Oleg

Answer:BUG REPORT: if USB UEFI BIOS Support is Disabled leads to WLAN and Bluetooth antenna is disabled

Hi,I had a similar problem with my T430s.What I did to fix it was to:1. downgrade the BIOS from 2.52 to 2.512. go to the BIOS, F9 to reload defaults3. enabled WiMax and Thunderbolt in the I/O settings.Maybe F9 reset the USB UEFI BIOS support.Hope they fix the problem soon!

Hi, Thanks for looking into this.

Downloaded various files yesterday all scanned with Sophos,

A virus was detected and removed by Sophos yesterday (AM)and I believed that any potential problem was resolved...

all worked fine until this morning...

On opening Chrome and Facebook the "The site's security certificate is signed using a weak signature algorithm" screen appeared.

On proceeding Facebook's CSS was basically non existent leaving the page incorrectly displayed, the same applied to Google and any other HTTPS site.

Changed passwords as a precaution!!

Computer System Restore, Check Disk and Firewall are all disabled and an error appears (Syntax error) when trying to activate / open them

Google Chrome keeps redirecting to Ebay and various Porn and Advertisement Sites

Ran Sophos Scan which ended prematurely and crashed the system, system repeatedly hanging and crashing...

Tried "malwarebytes" software as recommended by another forum, this found and removed one item however on the required restart there was an error stating a DLL file was missing or corrupt, I have subsequently un-installed this software

Sophos now keeps reporting corrupt files and suspicious file behaviour.

Obviously there is a gremlin in the system....

I have followed the instructions in the preparation steps and have generated the Logs as follows:

DDS
ATTACH
and the GMER software is still scanning

Please advise...

Thanks

Hi,

Ive had, what I believe to be a backdoor trojan on my computer for about 6 weeks now. It started with a malicious pop up which kept appearing making it look like i had loads of viruses and telling me that I needed to buy this virus scanner and my computer would not power off when shutting down. I knew I had a virus so I tried to use my scanner malwarebytes but it would not open, the virus had got to that as well. Eventually I tried copying malwarebytes to a removable media and managed to scan that way. I had lots of trojans including koobface. My computer was still really slow after the scan and they had not been properly deleted because each scan kept bringing the trojans again.

The next problem was my internet browser would not work, i eventually fixed it (cant remember how) but i believe the virus caused this. Then was the disabling of task manager, regedit and gpedit, which i have found by reading forums how to get this enabled again. I have since downloaded AVG, this tells me i have a trojan horse called 'generic7' again I keep scanning, the same viruses are found and deleted then on reboot they are there again. I also noticed that when i can access task manager some proccesses such as windows defender are really high and the only way to run the computer without it crashing/slowing down is to terminate the proccess. One new thing that has only just started to happen is that the ?task manager/ regit disable has by administrator? pop up sometimes appears and cant be... Read more

I'm using a Windows XP with Google Chrome as my browser
The problem started when I was trying to get to Youtube. I clicked the link and a fatal error occurred. Something about a redirect loop. One of the possible solutions google gave me was to clear all cookies and so I did. But then when I did that and went to my desktop, my wallpaper was gone and it said "Active Desktop Recovery" "Active desktop has been turned off" etc. I ran ATF Cleaner and Super-Anti-Spyware free edition in safe mode and thought the problem was solved. Anti-Spyware found something called "Hijacker.Tubby" and "Hijacker.Deskbar" It quarantined them and I thought it was done. But my Active desktop was still disabled and the driver for my wacom tablet isn't running.
I need this solved as quick as possible because this problem is setting me back on several assignments for my art class. I can't just start over on a piece of paper; too much time was put into the work that's already been done.

Here are my logs:

Hi, I'm pretty useless when it comes to figuring things out with computer software, ect. But over the past 2 days, my touchpad has suddenly stopped working properly. The issue is that when I hold any key on the keyboard, I cannot move my mouse, nor can i use 2 fingers to move the mouse, or have any more than 1 finger on the touchpad, it just locks the cursor into place and i cannot move it. I have tried a few suggestions, such as turning off palm-tracking, and going into Regedit and setting the values of "disable when typing" to 0, and after restarting, the issue is still the same, I can't move my mouse whilst using the keyboard, or having more than 1 finger on the touchpad. I went back into regedit, the values were still at 0, I went into the mouse settings, and palmtracking was still turned off. I even tried installing a different driver, but once I installed it and restarted, the computer said there was an error and had to restart - this wasn't fixed until I reset my entire computer, which took hours.Though I am not sure if I went about installing the driver correctly, as I did not uninstall any previous driver. I just don't know what to do now to fix this, I've tried everything! And this is especially infuriating for me as I'm a gamer, and because of this I am unable to properly play any games!

I'm working with a Dell Dimension 4700 with XP Professional SP3, that is in very bad shape.

When the PC starts both Symatec and MS Security Essentials are disabled, with Symantec trying to reload itself while your selecting or right-clicking on icons.
I'm using an administrator account and I've tried creating new admin user account and I get the same results.
I've tried starting in safe mode with the same results.
The NIC is disabled
.exes won't run i.e. I've tried to manually copy over virus updates, the MS malicious software tool, and when you try and execute them (in this case the malicious software tool) it goes about 50% of extraction then stops.
I've copied the contents of the DDS.txt (below) but I was not able to execute GMER, as I received a "Windows cannot access the specified device file or path, or you may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" error, so I apologize for not including the results of GMER.
I do have access to a Windows installation disc.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hey all,

Firstly I hope i have posted this in the right forum.

As the name states I can not use any of my windows security I know this is because of a fake anti virus i had at one point, I also can't install any other virus protection or firewalls onto my computer.

I'm assuming this has to do with what the virus has done with my computers registry, correct me if I'm wrong.

I want to restore my registry back to its default I have tried the reg restore /? command in cmd but it comes up with (see attached picture) and am not sure what this means or for the next step for me to take to continue the command.

Is there any down side to restoring my registry to its default as well?

My McAfee expired and the computer was unprotected for 2 days. In that time, picked up a rogue disable security virus. It has disasbled my system restore and will not allow me to download the McAfee update. It will also not allow me to boot up in safe mode. I did use CyberDefender, which found the file. I removed a file in my registry keys, but my problem persists. I have tried to use system restore through the cmd prompt as well to no avail. I also tried to download the McAfee update to a CD using my laptop & try to boot up in this computer, but I get a message saying JavaScript not working (Java updates are current)

I don't know what to do at this point - very frustrated.

Please help!

- When I double click on System in Control Panel instead of the System page coming up, a box comes up saying 'Data Execution Prevention - To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Name: Run a DLL as an App. Publisher: Microsoft Corporation.'
- Firewall is disabled and I can't re-enable it.
- My network connection wasn't working for a while, when I pried further it was saying my IP address was invalid and that it was 0.0.0.0. I restarted a couple of times and now the internet is working but says 'Limited or no connectivity'.
- The taskbar is grey and old-style rather than blue (but only sometimes - it changes).
- When I try and play music in Media Player it says 'Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly'. I reinstalled the driver from Acer's website and now I here the usual beeps, clicks and the Windows start up sound but still can't play music.

These problems all arose at the same time, when I started up on Friday. Computer was working ok previously. Have done a couple of virus checks and they found a few threats including ave.exe which gave me some problems a few days ago - I removed these but the problem persists. Scans with AVG and Malwarebytes find nothing. I don't have access to a Windows install or Boot CD.

Greetings jdavies11 and Welcome to the Forums,

Let's first try to uninstall some problems. All of these are out dated AND exploited:
Adobe Reader 7.0 You can download the latest version Here
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
...please click start-->Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down the list to locate the program names and click Remove for each. Reboot at any time you are prompted, otherwise reboot when finished uninstalling all of them.

With the latest version of Java, a new zero day exploit has already been discovered and is actively being used by hackers. I would not recommend at this time reinstalling even the newest version of jave.

If you must use IE for surfing at all, please use it at this time in the No addons mode (at least till Sun Micro issues their next update scheduled for July. To do that, click start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->Internet Explorer (No Add-ons). In Firefox, follow These Instructions to disable java. You can also install the "NoScript" Add-on" for Firefox and selectively allow/disallow scripting no matter what web page you visit.

Please download combofix from This Webpage...and read through the instructions there for running the tool.

***Important Note***
Please read through the guidance on that web page carefully and thoroughly...and in... Read more

I've been trying to fix this problem myself since Tuesday evening. Avast, Adaware, nor my own ability with Hijackthis has worked.
Like the subject line states, I can't open regedit or Spybot Search and Destroy, IE pop ups show up three at a time - randomly, and, like, SkiWeasel, Google send me to other sites (for me, it sends me to searchme.com).

Before I paste the latest Hijackthis log, I want to state that I have removed some of the more obvious culprits (regedit disable, msserver, cssrsc) but they keep coming back. When I first re-enabled regedit, I right away sought out the Spybot disabled registry and fixed it but Spybot still wouldn't open
I am at my wits end...

Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.

Recently my computer got infected with a Backdoor and a trojan. Advertisement websites continously popped up. My registry editing, task manager, right-click, internet editing were all disabled.

I've read an old thread in this forum that seemed to have to same problem I do : http://forums.techguy.org/security/512631-solved-right-button-half-working.html . But the thing is that Regfix.reg does NOT even work. I guess the spyware/virus also did something to the Notepad.

I already got rid of the spyware. No advertisements appear anymore, the computer returns to its normal speed. However, many functions such as task manager, registry, right-click, internet options still don't work.

Please help me out with this!

G'day,
As my title probably suggests, this virus has hijacked and royally raped my pc. My Anti-Virus and spyware removal tool have disabled "NOD32" and "STOPzilla". My Taskbar is an ancient NT style "grey" and my wireless network has been disabled. It also disabled my Audio but i re-enabled that through admin tools. As well as that my USB has been messed with somehow its reads from the USB but doesn't let anything write to usb. I tried booting my anti-virus through cmd prompt but it seems that trick doesn't work anymore. And i can't find any usual suspects in my vast registry. I scanned my pc before i rebooted came up with nothing so i restarted and this bleepstorm happened. I can still run Proggys and games normally so it hasn't bleeped with any of my drivers yet but yeh it still greatly inconviniences me. Help?

OS:Windows XP
Screenshots: Can't provide because all the USB has been disabled on my PC and can't access the interwebs off of it.
Error messages: Not getting any, anything i try to start that the virus doesn't want me to it just ends with no message.

Answer:Anti-Virus Disabled, Internet Disabled, GUI messed up.

So I can enable DMA on my CDRW, I disabled SB16 DOS Emulation in the Device Manager. When I did this and rebooted my 3 Com US Robotics 56k Voice Int PnP modems IRQ changed form IRQ3 to 7 and Com2 went to Com3 and the modem will not work. I removed the modem in the device manager and let windows refind it. But it will still not work.
If I enable SB16 dos emulation, everything goes back normal, including not to be able to tick the DMA on the CDRW.

The modem is in a ISA slot.

What do I need to do?

Hey all, decided to post this here since I had think I had posted it in the wrong forums before.Lets start at the begging, my Chrome just stopped working one day, I thought it was a .net framework update that had caused it stop working as it had in the past so I just switched back to Firefox until an update would come out. But about two weeks later, I know two weeks im a dumbass, I started getting google redirects and I have Antivirius XP installed on my computer, i preceded to remove it with MBAW and kicked its ass out of my registry but it came back and back and back. Now it seems to be gone but today I got Antivirus Soft, I killed it as well but now my redirects are back, Super-Anti, Spybot, MWAB and Spyware doctor just do not find anything. I've went all over my registry and I think I have it not working again, but I know it will come back. Also when I restart I have to re-enable themes, sound drivers and my DNS server so i can have an IP. Help, if you can =/.I can post any logs needed, I have Hijack this and can get other programs. Also sometimes I just have to restart my computer because my internet dies and I also can't open task manager, I don't know if that's a virus, Gives me like a failed to initialize visualize error. After several more scans I'm not getting anything so I don't now if its still there, I unplugged my modem when I did these set of scans. Also im showing these exact symptoms, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/320375/windows-xp-theme-is-no-longe... Read more

Hi there,So I'm having the same problem as this guy below, but I couldn't find the solution to his problem:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic319722.htmlBasically, my McAfee antivirus is disabled, my internet is disabled, my USB port is disabled, My Taskbar is an ancient NT style "grey", and I can't seem to do much other than open my photos and word files. I also haven't received any of those "your computer is infected" notifications as I've seen with other viruses. All I know is I went to work one morning and when I came home, my computer had restarted itself and ended up like this, and the only way to get files to and from my computer is to burn a CD.Here's what I've tried:- Running anti-virus in safe mode. Says there was an error and to go back to the McAfee homepage and try again.- Tried Malwarebytes - found a few infections and deleted them, but didn't fix the problem.- Tried System Restore, but doesn't show any "restore" points other than the day I got the virus.- Tried DSS and it comes up with a bunch of hashmarks.- I did what the previous thread said and used OTL and here's the result. My son infected his PC with some malware/viruses/trojans. I've successfully (I think anyway) removed them but now have a few residual problems.1. Internet Explorer does not connect to any websites. When IE8 is opened, it appears to be connecting to the homepage (youtube) but all that is displayed is a white page. The same holds true for Mozilla Firefox.2. My taskmanager has been corrupted/disabled as well. I've gone into gpedit.msc and checked the taskman properties ... all appears to be in order....however the taskmanager does not display when CTRL+ALT+DEL is implemented. I've gone to a command prompt as well and tried to run taskman.exe but nothing happens when the command is entered.I'm currently running Windows XP Media Center Edition.I did some additional work on the pc and thought I'd post more information. I installed StopZilla (which I like a lot too) and it caught an extra 216 infections and registry modification. Most notably, in the log it indicated that "DisableTaskManager" was embedded several times in my registry (along with other registry modifications). I then installed Avast and did a boot scan...which caught one more infection. I'm almost tempted to do a complete wipe and start with a fresh install but am reluctant to do so because one of the repeated infections is on my D:restore drive. Also worth noting is that my logs indicate I run Windows XP Pro when in fact I use Media Center. One other thing: I ran GMER and found that my system has been modi... Read more

Good Day Forum,

Name is Ivan.
I guess I'll start of with some details about my system and the issue I'm having.
It is a bit unique given the OS isn't the usual XP, it is Windows XP "Embedded", but I'm hoping it's not something that will hinder your ability to help me.
Now the issue is, and I'll be straight up honest, I'm assuming has to do with a P2P filesharing and is very similar in it's essence to the FBI virus.

* The USB keyboard locked out and render the naviagation keys useless upon entering the Boot Menu.
* Windows does not boot past the splashscreen.
I was able to get the keyboard to work by using a PS/2 Adapter I had on hand, giving me the ability to navigate through the Boot Menu and moved on to the next step.

Since my problem symptoms closely resembled the virus mentioned, I have proceded to follow the basic solution people use.
Downloaded HitmanPro App and attempted to make a bootable flashdrive. But unfortunately the only other computer I have is a 64bit Windows machine and I couldn't run a 32bit version I would need to use for the Infected (I'm assuming) machine.

With the Hitman app off the list of quick solutions I turned to AVG Rescue tool which is said to be less sensitive to the version of OS and was faced with yet another issue. When in Boot Menu and attempting to choose USB FDD (Flashdrive?) or any other option, the machine still attempts to boot from HDD and I'm hit with the windows splashscreen that loads for a few seconds and... Answer:Windows XP Embedded, Windows won't boot past splash screen, Keyboard disabled.

Update.

Got a 32bit version of Hitman app and made bootable Flash drive.

Got into Boot menu with a PS/2 keyboard.

Took a few tries to get it to boot from flashdrive, but in the end Windows started up and let me log in.

Prior to log in I get an Error titled "savedump.exe - Entry Point Not Found" ...and message:

The procedure entry point SymSetSymWithAddr64 could not be located in the dynamic link library DBGHELP.dll
Mouse works, but the system stopped recognizng PS/2 keyboard, so I hooked up one through USB and was able to log in.

Everything loads up alright and seems to be in order, except a few files system files missing (i.e. vidcap.ax; i8042prt.sys) and I get a message to insert a Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3 (never had one)

I have scanned the system with Hitman - no threats found except a few tracking cookies.

I'm not exactly computer savvy when it comes to dealing with anything that wouldn't let Windows boot, but overall a very strange case here. I don't even know what happened or if the tools I used are responsible for my problem's resolution.
I got no responces anywhere I went online...perhaps because I have weird Windows chopped up speciffically to deal with my machine's firmare (it's a desktop Dental 3D Scanner)...so, I just have a message to anyone having any problems - Don't give up. ;)

Okay. Now I know this is going to sound stupid but the other day I was trying to download a keygen for a friend. I don't do this for myself. So I was going to test it, then Avast! says threat detected and it said trojan virus. Ignoring this because some keygens are not a threat even if it says it is, so I opened it then it started to extract files. Closed out immediately. Didn't have problems for the rest of the night. Then I turned on my computer in the morning. The Windows Aero theme was disabled and I have a windows 2000/95 ish theme instead. Also the flag popped up in the notifications saying the windows security center has been disabled. When I try to enable it, it says error cannot start. I ran services to see what was disabled. Color, Defender, all of that was disabled. When I try to enable, it says failed to start. So I ran a full system scan with Avast. Nothing. Use Spybot Search and Destroy, 4 threats. Removed them, restarted. No difference. Then I downloaded NOD32 AntiVirus. scanned. 4 threats. Cleaned. Restarted, and still no difference. I've tried everything I could think of. I even tried system restore. It gave me the error " System restore is functioning correctly " My friend that I was getting the keygen for also has my Windows disc ( I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit). So I am currently downloading the ISO for the Windows 7 disc and I am going to try to repair and or use system restore with that. If that doesn't work then I am completely lost. T... Read more

Hi there!

I hope that this message finds you well.

First of all, I am not sure whether my laptop is infected with a virus, its hard drive is failing, or there is something else that is wrong with it, but here's what I've observed so far.

The problem started when I tried to open a word document and got the following error message: "Microsoft Office cannot verify the license for this application. A repair attempt failed or was canceled by the user. The application will now shut down". I restarted the laptop, hoping that this would solve the problem; however, when it restarted, (1) my task bar changed to the "classic grey look", (2) my attempt to restore the system to a previous point in time using system restore resulted in the following error message: "System Restore does not appear to be functioning correctly on this system. A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application event log for more information. (0x80042302)", (3) Windows Security system stopped working, (4) my internet stopped working, and (5) my sound was disabled.

I have avast! installed, which didn't detect any problems, even after I ran a boot-up scan. I also tried several other anti virus/malware programs that have not been able to solve the problem. Specifically a bootable Kaspensky disc did not detect any suspicious program, superantispyware found and removed several cookies, and malwarebytes (which was outdated because I couldn't ... Hi there,my name is Marius and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while you are follow my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Another machine with issues. Booted to safe mode and install malwarebytes. Removed 3 pup programs (including coupon clipper and rocket mp3 - tried to use windows uninstall to remove some of them after malwarebytes cleaned up) (over 100 files were cleaned up). Booted in normal mode. Windows update did not update for about a week. Trend Micro firewall/av not updating. Noticed windows defender message in logs (not starting). Updated mailwarebytes and reran - came up clean. Had to reinstall Trend Micro so updates would work. Ran trend micro scan - Nothing found. Ran malwarebytes rootkit checker - nothing. tried to run windows update. Not all updates worked (especially windows defender update). Tried to get windows defender to work - Failed. Ran windows update - Noticed 1 update for office 2010 not working - hid the update. Ran it again - found 5 updates. 1 installed but the others failed. Rebooted machine. Windows update stated that windows was updated. ---WRONG BEHAVIOR Those 4 updates should still be there-- Suspect some kind of virus but none seem to be obvious--. You will also not be able to start Internet Explorer 10 Metro version when you click any link in Windows 8 if the User Account Control feature is turned off, and Internet Explorer 10 is set as the default browser! So make sure your UAC is enabled.

Hello. I am experiencing trouble with my HP Windows 7 64Bit laptop. I noticed some changes back in December but thought it was because I received a new modem/router from ATT. I am always being redirected when I click on a link or have adware pop up. I use Google Chrome and installed an AdBlocker but it doesn't help. Also, I run spybot and CCleaner each week and SuperAntispyware and Uniblue registry booster everyday. When I click on Window Firewall, I get the following message: Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings error code 0x80070424I ran the Fix it tools, but it sent me to an online forum for more help. From there I found out that my Window Defender and Windows Security Essentials were also not working. I was able to install WSE but I am getting the same error code for Window Defender. Windows Security Essentials ran and found some issues and said it needed to restart to clear out the issues. However, during the restart, it tells me that it has encounter a problem and must reboot. On the forum, I read that I am most likely infected with a root kit virus. I have a folder called system64 C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM64 and a file called consrv.dll C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONSRV.DLLI. On another site, they asked for me to run Malwarebytes,OLT,TDSSKiller, and MBRCheck. ok i have avg and everything with my computer is up to date. But just yesterday i tried getting on my laptop and it wouldn't connect to neither my local area connection (through wire) or my wireless connection. We tried rebooting the modem and Router, restarting my computer (several times), and changing the wire. my mother's connection is perfectly fine so i know it has to be my computer. Also my sound device got disabled around the same time. the very first time i started my laptop up around the time all this started happening it wouldn't bring up any of my icons (it just showed my wallpaper) and task manager wouldn't do anything. I had to hold down the power button and restart. When the computer came back up all my icons were there, however, the desktop display was in windows classic mode and there is no way to change it through properties. I tried scanning for the virus through avg and it didn't detect a single harmful virus. I don't know what to do. I can't get on the internet to download anything through my computer and i need the virus destroyed before it messes more things up on my computer. I can't afford another laptop and i have approximately 4 years of videos, picture, and music on there that i may not be able to get back.

Answer:Virus disabled sound and internet connection, also windows classic display for windows XP desktop. Help!!!

Hello, and thank you ahead of time for the help.

My brother's laptop is pretty badly infected; his homepage redirects to hxxp://www.searchqu.com/406 and constantly redirects from google searches.
I've ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and ComboFix already to no avail.
There is a program called White Smoke installed that will not allow me to uninstall.
And in Services, Windows Security Service & Windows Defender are automatically disabled.
I try to enable them but within five seconds it reverts back to disabled.

Please help with this issue and once again, thank you for your time.

UPDATE: I've run DeFogger and DDS as instructed by the preparation guide, logs are attached.

Have just spent two unproductive days trying to use WET to move items from my Vista system to my new Windows 8.1 machine. The tool will evidently work for Vista --> Windows 8, but not to 8.1. I now read in places where Microsoft expects us to use SkyDrive for the transfer. In fact you get an unhelpful error message that reads: "Windows Easy Transfer can't be used to transfer files from Windows Vista or Windows XP". The pages wherein you download WET to Vista and to 8.1 have nothing to say on this until you get to the point of actually transferring. Ok, now trying to learn SkyDrive; also have Dropbox as an alternative.

Help please! I don't know what happened, but my Internet Explorer is now running with add-ons disabled, and I have NO idea how to get my add-ons back and re-install active X. I had Windows 8, uninstalled it, re-installed Windows 7 (running Windows 7 is fine with me, I will keep it), and I went to system restore under the "programs" button on my start menu. My computer would not restore either. I tried to restore it to the settings I had several days ago, and tried again by going a few more days back, but no luck. Can anyone help me? I am very, very much a beginniner when it comes to computer lingo and those kinds of things.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Tried searching the forums, but can't find any that's identical to my problem...

Ok I have a big problem - My AGP seems to be DISABLED on my PC, and my warcraft 3 lag like never before.

OS is Windows XP SP 1a (Clean install)
Drivers are Detonator 52.16 and VIA Miniport Drivers

Looked through my BIOS, and I'm sure I got AGP 4X, VIA V8Link and 128mb Aperture Size enabled.

Oh ya, I format my PC due to BSODs with the message IRQL_NOT_FOUND or something like that, it's probably an overheat problem. It could mean that the card is burned, but I doubt my card's fried yet - the problem's with the OS/Drivers.

Attached is an image of my wCPUid stat...

Please help in enabling my AGP bus... can't find the solution on any webs... thanks (and before the problem's solve i can't play my wc3 properly!!!)

Edit: --> DirectX9.0b

52.16 are the new force ware drivers from nvidia. i installed them for my Fx card and i couldnt play any games right either. i rolled back to the later detonator version 45.23 and it worked fine. so i would try that first, here is a link to download the driver. http://www.techspot.com/drivers/index/file/information/2140

Hello all!

If you have a Windows 8 machine and for some reason the network card has been disabled via control panel, please can you let me know? I have had a few people call in with this issue today which is a little concerning. The only other commonality between the customers is that the machine brand is HP. It did happen on both desktop and laptop machines, and the NIC that was disabled was the active one. (so both Ethernet and Wireless).

I am trying to track this to see if it was a Windows 8 update that caused this.

Hello,

Surfing the internet yesterday, I clicked a flash video that prompted me to update my flash player. When this "update" was installed, something else, called a privacy center or something, was installed as well. I didn't think anything of it, but this morning when I booted up my computer (the first time since shutting down after the malware was installed), this "privacy center" popped up and interrupted the boot sequence. The only thing I can do is call the task manager and get rid of the privacy center pop-up or start a new task, like firefox. Note that I cannot start Norton Antivirus software with this method. The Windows user interface never appears--no start menu bar, no clock, no desktop, although my desktop background still shows up. Thus, I can't browse directories. I'm in mid-boot limbo. I've never encountered this problem before, and I don't know what to to. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi, I'm new here and I would greatly appreciate any help! It started out as one of those fake anti virus alerts. i managed to get rid of that then my desktop turned blue. task mgr is "disabled by admin". i can't boot in safe mode, it gives me a blue error screen. gpedit.msc is "not found", but regedit appears to function. i have my taskbar, but a-v progs either won't run saying "i don't have appropriate permissions" or it will run for 30 or so seconds then disappear. my a-v exe files don't work. It won't let me rename them because they are "in use". i did manage to grab a hjt log. oh btw, i'm running xp home edition sp2, and i just did a repair install to no avail. so my all my updates are gone. i also tried exefix which failed as well. I still cant anti malware or any other a-v to run properly.here is my hjt log. again, i'd like to say thanks beforehand.

As of about 2 days ago, my IBM Thinkpad started having problems with trojan detections by Avast!. About the same time, the ethernet connection became disabled, messages started appearing that the windows firewall was disabled, the CD/DVD drive stopped working.

Two entries had appeared in the DNS server fields of the network card TPC/IP properties. I cleared these and reset it to DHCP.

I did a HJT scan and found some suspicious entries which I removed. A file atapi32i.sys had to be deleted on boot by HJT, but it is back now

I copied a clean version of atapi.sys and made it read only which restored the CD drive and allowed me to run wfc / scannow which I thought would cure the problem. It appeared to work OK, but a few minutes after re-booting the firewall message re-appeared, and there was still no network connectivity.

I confess to running rootrepeal and combofix before starting on the instructions in the sticky. I un-installed Avast at that time, as I couldn't seem to disable it to combofix's satisfaction.

Attempts to enable the firewall it via the security centre and control panel remain unsuccessful; the ethernet port detects cables being plugged in and out, but is unable to obtain an IP address. This is with 2 different cables & 2 different routers, both of which have been verified as OK. Hardware manager says that the 'device is working properly'

Turn on your computer and press F8 before Windows starts. This will bring up a boot menu from where you should be able to boot Windows either fully normally, or at least in safe mode (with or without network drivers).

CD ROM worked fine until I downloaded some Windows updates. I had a CD in the tray that didn't eject..system stuck in a loop. Solved that but next time I inserted a CD the system went back into a startup "unstable" loop. On checking the CD ROM Device Mgr. properties, it says "This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed". I clicked the update device driver wizard..it says the best driver available is already installed. The CD tray works find but inserting a CD puts the system in a shutdown mode and on rebooting puts it back in an "unstable" loop. How do I get it back to operating properly? Thanks for any help. (MS says it's not their problem!)

Answer:CD Rom disabled during Windows Upgrades

First thing I would do is to remove the CD ROM drive from the device manager. Then reboot the computer. Let windows detect it and reinstall the drivers for it. If you are still having the same problem you may need to update the drivers for the drive. However, I have never had to update drivers for cd rom.

So, I have only had one user account ever since i got the laptop. never had a password for it because i'm the only one using it and i live alone
Yesterday i sediced to set up a password, since ill be taking it out more from now on

then i restarted to make sure it all works. and there, i see two accounts now? the other one called the same as mine only it has a 2 next to it (like, Mirmir2)
so i went there and it looks all empty and pretty. seems ok to me. makes sense that if i put a password on my account windows will make a guest account or something. went back to my account. did my stuff. logged out, but didnt shut the computer off (im guessing that could have something to do with it as well), and went to lay down.
Of course, its the weekend, so when i say lay down after working double shifts and no sleep all week, i really mean pass-out-for-12-hours.
so i get up at 7 am. and i see my computer is turned off. huh. ok, makes sense, its been 12 hours. i turn it on. i try to log into my account. it is now the only one displaying, no guest account. password incorrect. tried several more times, thought it was me, still incorrect. made coffee, so this whole thing would make sense to me...
still incorrect.
tried safe mode. tried ophcrack. then when it searched for passwords it came up empty and i saw two user accounts, admin and guest. both were disabled.

Login to the Administrator account. If you have not enabled it and you don't have a working Administrator level account available, see below.

See this Tutorial by Flavius: User Account Password - Change from WinRE System Repair Disc.

Once you have that, you can log in as the Administrator and remove/change the password on your account.

Hello,
I disabled UAC and when I try to open Edge, Calculator, etc I get a window message that says that I cant open it with UAC disabled, I find it something very annoying that makes me think about going back to Windows 7, is there any around this?
In Windows 7 for example, I was able to open the calculator with UAC disabled.
Thanks!

Answer:Cant open any Windows App with UAC disabled

You cannot open any universal apps with UAC disabled, because Universal apps run in sandboxes that are based on UAC functionality. It was the same way in Windows 8.

Some apps have moved from desktop apps to Universal apps in Windows 10, such as the calculator. Edge is also a universal app. Settings is also a universal so, with UAC disabled, you can't access settings either.

Basically, disabling UAC cripples your computer now, and you can't run without it effectively.

Hey everyone. I am having a severe problem with a PC that I support where I work. To give a little background information, the PC had approx. 3700 peices of spyware that I removed while cleaning it up. I noticed that after every restart of the machine, all of the services for windows xp are set to disabled. I can manually go and set them to start automatically and then restart the machine and everything works fine...BUT if i restart again, all the services go back to the disabled state. The machine seems to run fine if I set the services to start automatically and restart, and then not shut down or restart the machine.

Does anybody have an idea about what could be going wrong? I have worked in PC support for around 4 years and i have never encountered a problem like this. I am sure I can resolve the problem by formatting and reinstalling, but i would rather find a solution to this problem.

Thanks for all of your help, Hoopty...

I have Windows XP on my System.

It was running fine last month. To my surprise, I cannot connect to internet last week. Then I checked my Task Manager, there were no running svchost.exe

Then I look deeply and run services.msc, surprisingly all services were disabled.
The only one running is RPCss. However I cannot control the said service. I looked into the Properties of the RPCss there were login username and password indicated but it is not familiar to me.
I ran Hijackthis and Combofix. There were nothing unfamiliar except what the combofix has detected. There was another system32 folder inside my c:/windows/system32. The combofix deleted the files.
I tried to run the system to Safe Mode but it just stays on checking and will hang.

I tried to run the Recovery Console using installation CD and I would try to repair the system but it stops on a BSOD
with these details:

P.S.

Hey

I just recently bought and installed AVG 9 Internet Security suit for my laptop and it was working fine. Then the other day when I upgraded my OS from Vista to Windows 7 I'm seeing that my firewall is disabled and I'm not able to enable it again. Why is this happening and how can I re enable my firewall?

Thanks

Answer:AVG 9 Firewall disabled in WIndows 7

OS Upgrades are tricky. You probably need to de-install and then reinstall AVG.

What major features/service did you turn off in W7?
System Protection (Restore) -> Until I get a bigger harddrive, I'll keep it off. It is space chewing and there are so many good free backup utilities there, I use Easeus backup personally and Macrium sometimes.

Windows Search (Indexing services) -> Search will be fast as long as your files are organized and the condition is okay.

Windows Defender -> NOD32 is fine.

How about you guys?

Good afternoon.
I have had some problems on startup for some time and have tried to install various programmes such as lavasoft adaware and SUPERAntiSpyware (the latter on the advice from Malware removal for windows XP (Home).

I get a message saying The Windows Installer Could not be accessed. I am not running in safe mode, and I have tried entering gpedit.msc into "run" but that simply says it's not recognised.

Can anyone advise?

windows 7 going into hibernation and it is disabled. I installed Kapersky yesterday i dont know if it's kapersky thats doing it.

Answer:windows 7 going into hibernation and it is disabled

Now are you 100% positive that it is hibernation and not low power standby? Hibernation is almost like a shut down. It will require you to log back in after you come back to the PC. Low Power Standby shuts off the Monitor and hard drive but just moving the mouse will bring it back.

I bet you money it is low power standby not hibernation.

Just to confirm this even more. Open up a command Prompt with Admin Rights. Type in this:

Code:
powercfg.exe –h off
That will fully disable hibernation. If you still get the same behavior after you do that as before, it is low power standby.

a recent windows update seems to have caused major problems with my acer aspire ax1700. It now gives me constant blue screens or simply freezes on me for no apparent reason. I have performed full system restore as well but the problem still exists. Can anyone help? Mine is just out of warranty and they will not assist me!

Answer:windows updates have disabled my pc

Are you certain that windows updates are the problem? The next time you get the blue screen, write down the error message and code provided on the screen. It isn't certain that updates have caused the issue, this may or may not be a timing coincidence. We need to pull the error message and dig deeper into the cause.

I have a Sony Optiarc DVD drive. When I first upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 it was working but later it is not. It shows in the Bios but not in Windows. I even bought a new Lite-on DVD drive and put it in and still not recognized by Windows 10.

Answer:Windows 10 disabled my DVD RW Drive

Seems to be common issue for many with this upgrade. Did you update system drivers from the PC manufacturer's site after this upgrade ? Look at top part of this article first, then try resolution 1 and then 3 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/314060

disabled user account cant log into safe mode ive got an acer and f8 dosent work I don't know how to fix this

Answer:disabled the only account to log into windows

Why cant you log onto Safe Mode. Do you get the menu screen that leads to Safe Mode? You need to start tapping F8 as soon as anything appears on the screen. Pressing and holding does not work. There is a hidden Administrators account that is only available from safe mode. You cannot disable this. Unless you have changed it, the password is usually blank.Normally Windows will not allow you to disable the only user account so how did you manage to do that. Stuart

Hi all, I have an HP Pavilion dv2915nr, and I recently installed Windows 7. I love it, but I noticed my laptop fan doesn't run anymore. I think this led to the computer going into standby a few times. When I loaded up Speedfan, the temperatures were around
80 degrees Celcius. I looked on the website for drivers for WIndows 7, thinking that might be the problem, but it doesn't seem to have any drivers for it, which is odd.

Can anyone help me out with this problem?

Answer:Windows 7 Disabled My Laptop Fan?

Win7 will not stop your fans from running. If the fans do not start up with the bios boot screen, or when you're in the bios, then there is either something wrong with the motherboard, the fan, the fan connection, or the bios.

I have a Windows 10 box and just did the anniversary update (it took a long time, which I have read it not atypical). Now, about 3 minutes after boot-up the whole machines stops responding (the mouse moves, but applications will not respond, ctrl-alt-del does not respond, etc.) for about 30 seconds, and finally I get a notification that Windows Defender has been turned off. When I open the Defender dialog and click "turn on", it fails with an error code (I don't have access to the code right now, I will post it later if it is relevant).

I am not running any other real-time scanner, so this should not be a conflict with another such program. My knee-jerk reaction is that I somehow got some malware, etc. and it is shutting off Defender. However, how do I know? Short of throwing a bunch of sticks (scanner programs, etc.) at the problem, is there any way I can troubleshoot and actually *know* why Defender is shutting off?

I am a programmer by trade and like to think I understand some of this, so when things like this happen it is extra frustrating to me. I always think "WFT is going on with this!?" I think I should know how to figure it out, but I don't, and it is embarrassing.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Matthew

Since upgrading to Windows 10 last night, app notifications are disabled and the checkbox is greyed out. The top of the screen says, "Some settings are managed by your organization." There is no organization. This is my home PC, I have placed no restrictions on it, nor have I ever touched local group policies.

Am I seriously the only person experiencing this behavior!? The lack of response is deafening ...

Answer:Windows 10 bug - app notices disabled

Solved it myself by editing group policies. Though why the default behavior is to disable all notices, and lock the selection is beyond me.
