Preferred Solution: Virus changed file extensions of Microsoft office file, PDF's and photo files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I had a very strange virus one of my PCs that seemed to change the file extensions of certain files (office, pdf, jpg and zip files) and also made the files unreadable when I fixed the extensions and tried to reopen them. We had our IT guy come in and restore a backup, but 2 flash-drives still have the files with this issue.
here is a screenshot of what it does to the files:
it seems to capitalize the normal extension, then add ".gpqvsem"
I have run panda security and malwarebytes scans and it doesn't pick up any issues on either of the flash-drives.
Any help fixes the files would be very appreciated.

While working on some Microsoft Word Documents, with MS Word Starter (free version), all file icons and extensions everywhere in the computer changed.

Icons in some Word documents with .docx extensions changed to a plain orange (attachment 1), while retaining the same extension. When double clicked to open, a microsoft window appears asking me to activate the full Microsoft Office 2010 (paid version), which is in Widows 7 by default. These documents are not opening.

The rest of the Word documents changed their extensions from .docx to .rtf (attachment 2). Their icons also changed from the usual Word document icon. These open with Word Satarter but in Compatibility Mode, which did not happen before.

The option to 'Open with' in the right click menu does not show Word Starter in the pop up window (Attachment 3). Not even when 'Other programs' are selected.

I did a repair to the Word Starter from the Control Panel, to no avail. I have a few hundred Word documents in my libraries which are now in a total mess!

What can I do?

You could try rebuilding the Icon cache by following this tutorial.

My husband's computer has major problems. Every executable program file has been changed to a file type .LNK and nothing will open! I am able to right click and select which program to open with, but this only works for a few programs as I am not able to locate all the files needed. Norton Internet Security seems to have disappeared from the computer and the Windows Restore will not work. In fact, any file with a .EXE file extension doesn't seem to be working (which is just about everything...)

Anyone know what is causing this?? Any help would be appreciated...the sooner the better so I can get his WoW working again.

PS: I was able to run Ad-Aware & Registry Mechanic, but it didn't make a difference. The Restore function of Registry Mechanic will not work either.

one of our users recently had all his files changed to a strange format. For example if a word file is named "Committee.DOCX" then it would change to "Committee.DOCX.isycjje". All the MS files as well as pdf files are changed to that extension of " .isycjje". I tried applying several anti-malware programs as well as mounting the drive to linux with no avail to retrieve sucess.
Any one faced with this issue recently , please advise suggestions.

All my file extensions have been changed to PDF, along with default programs. Is it a virus?
Please help.

Answer:All file extensions changed on my PC. Is it a virus?

In Windows 10, open Settings > System > Default apps.
Scroll down till you see Reset to Microsoft recommended defaults and click on Reset.
If you are using Windows 8 or Windows 7, you will see a similar setting somewhere in Control Panel > Default Programs.
If this does not help, create a system restore point first and then try this:
Open regedit and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts
Expand FileExts. Here you will see a list of file extension folders. You will have to expand each of them, one after the other, and IF you see a UserChoice folder under it, delete the UserChoice folder.
Else you can download File Association Fixer v2 for Windows 10/8 and restore each file association manually. Having done this do remember to scan your PC with your antivirus software.

I have a User that brought a computer to me. Mostly all the files within the user folders where changed. Example of a file.
Should be (Birthday.jpg)
is now (Birthday.jpg.cpjevac)

I have deleted the extension .cpjevac from the name allowing it to change to .jpg file and when doing so the file icon changes as the application that is compatible with .jpg. After opening the file it just says "The file may be unsupported, damaged or corrupted"

does anyone know what I can do for this. I have searched so many places have not found anything at all.

I have booted in safe mode and ran virus scans just to clean the system, But no change of the files at all.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I was installing Norton Security and it locked up during install.
When I rebooted, Norton had changed all my files extensions from exe to lnk

As a result none of the programs or files work. After reading a lot, I tried to

restore my registry. Since Norton changed the files, any command in run does not work. I comes up with a dialog asking for a file association.

Any one with an answer, I would appreciate very much.

I have a file that is created through a software game. That file is named with an extension of .LZP I then upload that file to a web server. When I click the link to download the file using IE6 it gives me a download dialog box but in that box the file name gets changed from a .LZP to .ZIP

The original software is looking for the .LZP extension. So without changing it back from .ZIP to .LZP the program won't list it to be selected. The Software doesn't give the option of *.*(all files).

I have done some reading and it seems that it has something to do with mime type. Is there anything I can do to my file associations so that this file is recognized and force it to keep the .LZP extension?

Answer:File extensions being changed

Make a new "association" to the program that needs/uses it ...

1. Double-click My Computer.
2. On the View menu, click Options.
3. Click the File Types tab.
To create a file association, click New Type.
A box will open with "Description of type",
enter something discriptive.
The box beside it says, "Associated Extension", enter a name
Then Click the "New" button and enter "open".
In the "Application used to perform action" box, browse to the program.
then click OK and C:\WINDOWS\whatevertheprogramis.exe will appear in the
"Application used to perform action" Box.
Then click OK until all the boxes are closed.

Pertinent details of my system are in the attached text file.

Shortly after running Pareto's RegCure I found that the language bar had disappeared and on reboot my desktop icons had been rearanged.

I restored thae backed up registry entries which RegCure had removed but that made no difference.

I then ran my software vigilantes, ewido anti-spyware, Ad-Aware SE, AVG free, PestPatrol, Spybot and XoftSpySE, none of which reported anything suspicious.

I then restored the system to a time before I ran RegCure, and that made no difference either.

I then went to bed, leaving the PC switched on as normal.

The following morning I found that the monitor's power settings had been changed to switch it to standby and that my default screensaver had been changed to one of Window's standard designs.

I also found that the language bar had been restored. Strange.

Furthermore, I discovered that all screensaver files are no longer listed with the .scr extension nor indeed any other extension, although hovering the mouse cursor over them tells me that they are screensavers. Although screensavers work and I can change them as I could before, I now find that clicking on them no longer opens them up in the display but opens them up in Notepad which present me with alpha-numeric and other characters of course.

This wouldn't normally be a problem fo most people, I suppose, but I occasionally create my own screensavers and it is useful to be able t... Read more

How do I open a .pvm file. I am pretty sure it is an old HP file association no longer used, but I have been helping friends retrieve a lot of old files and put them on their new system, in doing so we came across "old" .pvm files (example name: Camera_1-6-2004), we do not know if these old photos were ever properly saved to their computer and we are unable to open the file due to nothing appears to support this file extension any longer. Any suggestions?

Thank you so very much for any help in opening these files.

Answer:Old photo .pvm file extensions

Looks like maybe an HP camera made them.
Then they may only be an index to the the images and if the file size is real small then I would guess that is what they are.

Hello, and thank you in advance for your help.  I have a laptop that seemed to have gotten infected with a nasty virus that took over the screen, and asked for payment from Spamhaus of all places.  Having seen things like this before, I ran a slew of anti-virus that I've used to remove viruses before.  I ran Malwarebytes, Super Anti-Spyware, and finally Combofix.
After I ran combofix (there were 2 deletions), I reboot the laptop and viola, no more taking over the screen.  However, I have a directory in which I keep all my important work files for dropbox that it seems to have changed all the files into html files.  Each file has ".html" slapped onto the end of it, and when you open it, directs you to another ransomwear page labeled Spamhaus.  I've tried snipping off the .html, but the files don't open correctly.
If I lose these files I'm in big trouble.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Download decrypt_mblblock.exe to your desktop. The complete usage instructions and video can be found here.If you only have a single hard disk with one partition, then only thing you need to do is start the tool.Windows XP users can simply double click and run the tool, Windows Vista, 7 & 8 users need to run the tool with administrator rights. Now it will automatically scan your complete hard disk for encrypted files, when there are encrypted files present it will automatically decrypt those without deleting the encrypted originals. After the decryption check that all of the decrypted files open properly.Once you have verified that the files were decrypted properly you can delete the encrypted HTML files. If you have more than one hard disk or partitions with encrypted files, things get slightly more complicated. To scan and decrypt files on those other hard disks or partitions do the following:While holding down the Windows key now press the R key. The Run Box will now appear. In the Run box Type in cmd.exe and press Enter. The Windows Command Line prompt should show up.You first need to switch into the directory where you downloaded the decryption tool to.This can be done using the cd command: cd /d <path>Just replace <path> with the path you downloaded the decryption tool to. If you downloaded it to C:\Users\Administrator\Downloads for example the exact command line to type in should look like this:cd /d C:\Users\Administrator\DownloadsIf you did everything right... Hi rajeshshinde1795 It seems that you have been infected with a variant of the CTB-Locker/Ctritroni Cryptoware. When it's done encrypting files, it appends an extension to them composed of random generated characters. If you want to read more about CTB-Locker and Critrino, you can visit the FAQ hosted on BleepingComputer at the link below.CTB Locker and Critroni Ransomware Information Guide and FAQThere's also a Support thread currently open and on-going for this infection. Corrupt installer databases are to blame. This appears to appen with Office and Adobe pdf products. The installer database contains your .ICO or icon files. Sometimes the icons also mysteriously disappear from the porgramfiles directory as well. I have not found a solution as of yet and this continues to happen after fresh reformats. As for reinstall or repair sometimes these fail due to the corrupt installer database as is the case for me. If this is the case this thread may help you. THe program sugusted by Windows star filetypemanager may help you locate the missing installers and replace the missing file extension icons. With a corrupt installer database though its difficult.

I have no idea what's going on here. I'm running Windows Vista.

In my Computer folder, there are these files(folders?) that have no file extensions, no names, and I can't delete them (no context menu, and nothing happens when I press delete on my keyboard while they're highlighted).

Also, the other files show up twice. I.e. two Documents folders, two Pictures folders, etc. Double clicking on either of the doubles opens up the same folder.

I've attached a screenshot of it.

p.s. I hope someone can help me. I've tried other forums, but after many bumps, I gave up on them.

Answer:Files with no file extensions?

Here's what someone suggested in another forum I posted in:

Those aren't files. They're shell extentions. It looks like you've got a screwed up shell extention installed. Anything that creates a 'psuedo' folder in Computer/My Computer uses one to accomplish it. Nero, WIDCOMM, etc.

You should be able to use Autoruns to figure out what is loaded in explorer, and locate the one that's causing the problem.

Give us a list of all the extentions loaded by explorer.

Or you can try this tool: to expand...

I followed what was suggested and replied but after no response and a few bumps, I'm trying this forum. The link to the complete thread is here:

Hope this info helps.

Setup: Win 7 Home Premium SP 1 x64 on Dell Studio 1558.

In most directories, if I rename "file.jpg" to... "file.JPG" and hit return to commit the change, "file.jpg" is the result.

When I go to rename "file.jpg" again and the text is highlighted, awaiting my input, "file.jpg" turns into... "file.JPG", as I had originally renamed it.

If I rename "file.jpg" to... "file1.JPG", the change commits. I can then rename "file1.JPG" to... "file.JPG" without any problem.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening? And what's the difference between upper and lowercase extensions anyways?

Answer:Renaming Files/File Extensions

In Windows, an extension is the same regardless of uppercase or lowercase. However, if you move this file to a Linux file system, JPG is not the same as jpg. *nix operating system files are case sensitive.

What exactly is it that you're trying to accomplish? Are you trying to run CF unattended or are you trying to modify its code? If so, you should direct your question to the tool's author as we do not discuss its inner workings on the forums (at his request). Sounds to me like you're asking about scripting, and possibly including CF in, another reason to direct your queries to him. The settings you mention are in the registry. You'll have to find which key, and which command you could use to modify them.

I have searched all over the Internet looking for how to associate certain extensions with certain programs using a .bat file... but no luck. I have spent about two hours experimenting. I'm able to do this from the command prompt:

ASSOC .cpp=C++_Source_Code
FTYPE C++_Source_Code=E:\Notepad2.exe %0
I created a small hi.cpp file to test this. It works perfectly. The command line is E:\Notepad2.exe E:\hi.cpp just like it should be.

However, doing the same thing from within a batch file yields the command line E:\Notepad2.exe E:\assoc.bat which opens my batch file when i double-click on hi.cpp... Is it even possible to perform this association from within a batch file? I have a LOT of different file types to register, and i don't want to spend 20 minutes every time i log on associating these extensions by hand.

Answer:Associate file extensions with batch files

Just in case anyone on the Internet has the same problem... I found a piece of portable software that allows you to edit the registry. I'm pretty sure it can edit from the command line, but don't ask me how :/ Run this from a batch file and it theoretically should edit the registry, even if you "technically" cannot go into the registry through Windows utilities.

First timer here, so please bear with me. Any help you can offer is MUCH appreciated!

Some of the files on my SD card have changed file extensions and appear corrupted (the modified dates are wonky and the file sizes are off). For example, a file that was formerly IMG_3324.JPG is now MG_3324J.PG, and I can't open, copy, or rename the file. When I try, I receive Error 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

I have gone into Properties>Tools>Check. I receive the following: "We found errors on this drive. To prevent data loss, repair this drive now." However, when I click Repair Drive, I just receive the error, "There was a problem scanning and repairing this drive..."

Most of the files on the SD card are readable and work just fine. I was able to copy them to another location; however, there are about 60 or so corrupted files that I would like to repair (I don't want to lose the pictures!).

Also, any ideas what causes these errors? I want to make sure I don't repeat this in the future :-/

I'm running Windows 10, and the SD card is a Dane-Elec Proline 4GB card.

This has never happened to me before. I use filebot to name my video files for me, but they are all in different formats, well this time, it wiped out the file extension for all my video files. Does anyone know of a way to restore them? Any help is appreciated, thank you. I do have the option selected to show file extensions in Windows 10 Pro.

I am trying to change the registry to show hidden files/extensions.
This is for an unattended install, so I don't want to do it manually for each user. I know I can change the registry for the current user, but I can't seem to find out how to do this system wide. I need to show hidden files and file extensions for all users, such as when a new user account is created, extensions and hidden files are shown.

Is there a way to do this system wide?

I have tried adding the dword following entries:
Hidden (Value=1) & HideFileExt(HideFileExt=0) to the below locations in the registry

I read that if you change HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\NoHidden & HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\HideFileExt to the above values it should change the default key for HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced (Hidden & HideFileExt)

None of the HKLM entries I have tried as above appear to work.
Is there actually a way to change this system wide?

Answer:Show File Extensions and Hidden Files for all Users

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
show and hide files is a profile specific key and therefore can be modified by user accounts. if you would like to change the default, navigate to key:
HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current version\explorer\advanced\folder\hidden and \hidefileext
there are keys in there that set default behaviors.

Answer:Is it safe to delete unsual file extensions that is temporary files??

Never heard of the program/software your talking about there, i always use ccleaner, but if you want to check or clear out temp files just go to run type in %temp% and that will open all temp files and folders and it is safe to delete everything thats in there, so you could use that and compare them !

Has anyone seen this variant of malware? It seems to be encrypting the files, as they are corrupt now. It is renaming all files with an extension of .wityymc.
We have the latest updated Vipre Business Premium antivirus on it, as well as CryptoPrevent. Initial scans are showing nothing. MalwareBytes hasnt had a chance to run on it yet.
Anyone seen this or know what it is?

Answer:Virus or malware renaming file extensions to .wityymc

You have a Cryptowall on system. There's no way that you can recover files, but you can remove infection by asking for help in Virus Spyware and Malware Logs forum. I'd like to help you but FRST,Hijack This and DDS logs aren't allowed to be posted here, only in mentioned forum.

After much messing around I have discovered that if you use Windows 7 'Associate a file type or protocol with a program' to set default programs for file types, it breaks the File Types selection within a given program (in my case Microsoft Office Picture Manager) and you are no longer able to use the program itself to set file types only the Windows 7 function. You can tick/untick file associations all day long within Microsoft Office Picture Manager and nothing gets associated/unassociated. The File Types option is basically broken. I have also noticed this occur with 7-zip which actually causes a more serious issue. By default .zip is not listed in the Windows 7 list of 'Associate a file type or protocol with a program' window but is listed if you associate .zip with 7-zip's own file association option. BUT if you then subsequently use windows 7 to re-associate .zip with Windows Explorer, the .zip vanishes (because by default is is not listed), breaks 7-zips file association options and you can no longer associate .zip files with 7-zip, EVER. Basically I am curious as to why Windows 7 own file association options would break software's own internal file association options so badly to the point they are essentially useless and if there is a fix. I even tried completely reinstalling Microsoft Office and removing all references of it within the registry, no luck. Its not a big deal but I just found it odd that a fundamental piece of Windows 7 would harm the integrit... Read more

About a year or so ago, I was hit with CryptoWall 3.0. It encrypted a lot of my files and I was only able to remove it thanks to the help of the people on this forum. Now I have been hit with a newer version of an encryption virus. All of my encrypted files now have the extension of ".crypz" and won't open. Luckily, I had most everything backed up that was important, but I am sick to death of getting these viruses! Can someone please help me get rid of this again? I am frightened it is going to encrypt more and more of my stuff as time goes on. I currently have an Avast! and a Malwarebytes scan running, but I don't know what else to do. I'm note sure if the virus is still present or if it has done it's damage and is gone. I thought I was done with this, but I guess it was lying dormant in my PC. Or I caught it from somewhere, though I don't use this computer for much.
Thanks in advance for the help.
I just finished up the Avast and Malwarebytes scans. Malwarebytes found nothing, but Avast found a single High Threat file. However, when I click for it to fix/move to chest/delete, etc. the file, it says "Error: File cannot be located". I don't know if the file deleted itself after Avast found it or what has happened, but I am scared to death it's going to get worse. Can someone please please help me make sure this awful virus is gone, and also help me prevent this from happening again? Thanks so much.

Hi guys1
I'm about to create a .reg file that will set path in registry to my own icon for specific file extensions. E.g. I want my own icon as a default icon for .ini extension. And not only for one extension but for more of them, in a single .reg file. As always I don't want to mess it up,so I'm looking for some basic assistance on how to fill a notepad. And I know this is the best place to look at

P.S. I do use a Default Program Editor and File Types Manager, but I wanted a single .reg that will do the job for multiple modifications in a single click, something like backup of icon-registry-modifications, as I like to format my PC every year to ensure clean working environment. Setting things up de novo is a lot of fun but time consuming... I made a backup of registry and a Restore Point, just in case.

For any idea, thanks in advance!!

Answer:.reg file to set default icon for specific file extensions

If changing the icon worked with the tools you mention, use Process Monitor or Regshot to track down specific changes in the registry for .ini that change the icon. Then create similar registry entries for other extensions in your REG-file.

Is it possible to have Windows Explorer sort your files by the literal file extension, rather than by the designated file type? For instance, instead of having all of my WAV, MP3, MID, AIFF, OGG, etc files being listed as "Winamp Media File" I'd prefer that they are seperated by thier individual extensions like "WAV File" or "MP3 File" which makes it easier to identify file types within the explorer. I guess the same thing applies for images and video files, which can be grouped together under a common application.

Answer:File Extensions vs File Types in Windows Explorer

Well you can always use the "arrange icons by type" method. You can also assign certain icons to certain file types through folder options. That way all your wave files may have one icon while your MP3s have another, etc.

I'm using filetypeman, attempting to set a different icon for a different type of text file such as xml, csv, txt, ini, php ... But when I change one of them, some or all of them will be affected. I have associated them with a common text editor, that may be the cause. But is there a way to tweak their icons to prevent them from changing together? My OS is Win 7 x64. I have tried both filetypeman and types - same problem.

I had to redo a computer and I installed Office 2003 on it which is what it had on it before I reloaded everything OS and apps. I also had to install Microsoft Photo Editor from a CD I had of Office97. I did a custom install from Office97 CD went to Microsoft Office Tools and only selected Photo editor to install. Now it seems that photo editor reads some files but not all. I seems that its a file size problem it seems that anything over a certain .jpg size the photo editor says "Unable to read file".

Does any one have a clue on what to try?

Answer:Microsoft Photo editor unable to read file .jpg

Seems surprising that you have to guess what the problem is.

Might be worth proving the case, say by shrinking a sample jpg in a simple program like Irfanview ( - then try opening the smaller file: take it to an authority like Microsoft if that's true.

I changed OneDrive properties and now all Office apps crash on file open/save browsing.

My family and I were confused between OneDrive and the Documents library in our recent install of Office 365 Office 2016. Sometimes we saved to OneDrive when we wanted to save to local Documents. So, I stupidly changed OneDrive to a 'hidden' folder on one of our machines thinking that was a quick and easy fix. Since then Office products (Word, Excel, etc.) all crash on that machine (i.e. go into Not Responding mode) whenever we try to perform a file save as browse or file open browse and I have to use Task Manager to end them and we lose the document.

First, I tried the Office 365 Quick Repair and the Online Repair. Then I tried 'un-hiding' OneDrive and reran Online Repair. Then I tried enabling "Prevent the usage of OneDrive for file storage" in the Local Group Policy Editor>>Computer Configuration>>Administrative Templates>>Windows Components>>OneDrive, accessing it with Win+R gpedit.msc. I left the other OneDrive configurations as 'not configured'. I reran Online Repair again. That didn't work.

My Windows 10 Pro has OneDrive Uninstall in System Settings, Add or Remove Programs. So I uninstalled OneDrive. Then I ran AVG Registry optimization and cleaned up the registry. I rebooted, ran Office Online Repair again, rebooted, and tested Word file save as browse. Word locked up again.

I don't think I have a suitable restore point to roll bac... Read more

Answer:Changed OneDrive properties and Office locks on file open/save browse

Sounds like you messed stuff up pretty badly there by messing where you shouldn't.

That said, I think the best course of action is to do a repair install - How to Do a Repair Install of Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade. This will let you keep your programs and setting without having to reinstall all your programs. Once that's done, you might look to reinstall Office.

If that doesn't work, you may need to do a clean install - How to Clean Install Windows 10.

Hope this helps. And may I add leaving things alone if you're not sure what they do or how they could affect your system

I have a couple hundred mixed images of different file types. 80% of them do not have file extensions in the name. Mostly Tiff, EPS (in CMYK), PS, AI, and Jpg. I need to add in file extensions for the correct image type. So all the Tiff files without .tif at the end need .tif added. Same for EPS, AI etc. Some images DO have the extension already and I do not want those changed or an extra extension tagged onto them.

Any suggestions for software to read the file type from the image then add the correct extension if it is missing? I could do it manually but hundreds of manual renames are not my idea of a fun time. I have Vista, XP, 2K, A few Linux distro's etc available, so I can run most modern software.

Answer:batch add file extensions to file names.

Do you have "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" enabled in Windows Folder Properties by chance? Or do you just want to have the file extension in the file name?

"The Rename" will do what you want.

Probably, the best hope is: any prior to this unfortunate occurance backup. If no backup/restore, then you will have to remake the files. It is remotely possible that a System Restore Point might bring back some but not all your files.

Answer:Virus Changed All File Names

Hi, I am by no means an expert, as I have issues in my own XP that I am here to get help with, but I would say you will likely not change them (the files) back, so you might want to save whatever you can in the way of data.
I would wait for others to respond before trying this, but I would probably load the hard drive into another computer, and access it from there to attempt to save anything such as pictures or letters, which should be possible if the file extensions (the three letters after the dot) are still the same as they should be.
Then, I would place the drive back into the original PC, then full format and re-install the XP.
If you have no important data to save, just wipe it all clean and start again right away.
To do this, you will need a copy of the actual XP operating system installation disc that matches your operating system, (Not what they call a 'restore disc') and you might have to contact Microsoft with the old product key that should be on the PC case to get it validated.
The other way is to do what is called a 'repair install' which is writing the XP over the top of the existing XP without formatting.
You might try getting more info on that, then you might be able to save more data. After which you can format and reinstall XP to ensure no infections are still there.
The whole thing (course of action) will depend on how much data you need to save, if any.
Above all, don't rush, wait until you get a few responses.

I was asked to help a friend with an infected computer. It was slow, anti malware programs would not run even in safe mode, Google searches were re directed, regedit would not run, etc etc. The owner needed it up and running ASAP so I suggested a fresh install. I tried to save the personal files and found that all the .jpg, .doc, .pdf and .zip files had the extra extension .encrypt and would not open. Only files with .gif and .tif were not affected.

I did a fresh install of XP Home but could only save .gif and .tif files that were not changed.

I have been searching and posting all over the web to no avail to find out how to unencrypt files like this.

If it happened once chances are it will happen again and I would like to find out if this was caused by an infection and what to do about it.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

This may be the ultimate deal breaker‏ for me.

I have successfully blocked Microsoft Office File Validation Add-in for about 5 years on XP, Vista, and Windows 7. It is an update that makes loading and saving Office 2003, or Office 2007, files take at least 10 times longer than without it, and often much more. It is agonizingly slow. I assume the delay is based on the size of the file, since they claim they are scanning for stuff other than legal Office information. I also wonder if it isn't kind of a penalty to try to get you to update to a newer version of Office in disguise as a security feature.

Windows 10, of course, has applied it under their forced automatic-update rules. If you select "Uninstall Updates", on the listing of successful updates, you get a list of many updates which have been applied. (Most of which are not listed on the previous page's list of installed updates. ??????) That particular update, however, is not listed even though it shows on the previous page.

In searching for any related posts, I see that there is an equivalent for Office 2010, so unless they made great improvements in the processing, a lot of other people are having degraded file activity on Office products as well. That is, unless they are used to it because they hadn't blocked the update in their previous OS.

If I have to put up with such degraded performance from my Office products I may just revert to Windows 7.

Edit: I am assuming this is becaus... Read more

Some of my saved word documents (in this case cover letters only) are being automatically copied over and over again. It is making copies of copies and will eventually fill the computer. I can not delete them as fast as they grow in numbers.

Hi - I have a Dell PC - Optiplex 760, running Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Office 2003. Yesterday, my daughter played a game online, and suddenly a bunch of my files changed their extensions to lnk. It seems to be limited to things like I-tunes, Adobe Reader, Quicktime, and all the microsoft office programs. I've run Norton anti-virus - there was a virus that got eliminated. I've done system restore, and re-installed Windows XP. Now, I think I'm probably just messing it up. Anyone have a thought on what to do? Thanks, Beth

Answer:Solved: most of my operating system files changed to lnk.extensions??

Hello thank you for taking the time to read this. I use a laptop which runs off windows vista business edition. I recently was bored of the old themes that windows had so I tried to download a custom one I read many guides and they also said I had to change the shell32.dll file in the windows/system32 folder so I found a few ones and that I liked but shortly after I decided to change back to the original theme because the font was too small to read. But I had deleted the original shell32.dll file so I googled download windows vista shell32.dll and found this site and I downloaded it and it seemed quite professional so I used it and everything was fine until I restarted my laptop. Once I start it up it runs smoothly until it eventually turns to a black screen and a message pops up saying
logonUI.exe - Entry Point Not Found "The procedure entry point SHCreateShellItemArray could not be located in the dynamic link library SHELL32.dll."
I then click okay. The windows symbol and noise appears and my accounts show up normally. When I click on either of them and log on, the welcome sign appears and then a white box pops up saying
explorer.exe -Ordinal Not Found "The ordinal 790 could not be located in the dynamic link library SHELL32.dll."
It then says windows explorer has stopped working and also task scheduler engine has stopped working. I am unable to open task manager to run explorer.exe and the same messages appear. I ha... Read more

I am on a Dell Inspiron running Win7. I recently moved my Acrobat Pro to this laptop and I wanted to use Acrobat as the default pdf printer and reader. The laptop came with MS XPS Document Writer and XPS Viewer as defaults.

To start, I right-clicked the file and selected "open with" and chose Adobe. I checked the "always use the selected program" option. The Adobe Reader window opened and I got this error message:

Adobe Reader could not open ***.pdf.downloading because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

Note the file name now has both a .pdf extension and a .downloading extension. When I look in My Documents, File Type for about 70% of more than 27,000 files now says DOWNLOADING file and the files all have this extra extension. It seems to have impacted pdf files and doc files. None of them will open. I tried to open one of the doc files with WordPad and it just brings up a blank page.

Now when I right-click and choose "Open with," I only get three options - Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat or WordPad. I've tried to find the application for XPS in Program Files to see if opening with that and changing the default back to that would help but I can't find the application anywhere.

I really hope someone can help me out with this. I use CrashPlan for back up and tried restoring one of the affected folders but it didn&#... Read more

Answer:Making Acrobat default changed some files to "DOWNLOADING file"

When you say you moved Acrobat Pro I assume you mean you did a normal install on the laptop. If you remove the .downloading extension (any.pdf.downloading to any.pdf), can you open the file? Do you have any downloading progs that use the .downloading extension for partly downloaded files? If so, perhaps there is a conflict.

Microsoft Office File Validation Add-in

Download size: 1.9 MB

Update type: Important

Microsoft Office File Validation is a security add-in for Office 2003 and 2007. Office File Validation is used to validate that Binary File Format files conform to the Microsoft Office File Format. The user will be notified of possible security risks if files fail to conform to the format.

More information:

Help and Support:

I've just done a new install of Win 7 64 bit Pro and Office 2007 Pro.

This download appears to be getting pushed on us by MS

If I Google Microsoft Office File Validation Add-in there seems to be a lot reporting problems/issues, making computers run very slow, some say it is only for 2003 others say it's for 2003, 2007 & 2010.

I've just done a new install of Win 7 64 bit Pro and Office 2007 Pro. so I'm a little perplexed about this.

Any thoughts anyone.

Answer:Microsoft Office File Validation Add-in Important or not.

The updated Microsoft explanation page which explains its purpose in more detail here: Office File Validation for Office 2003 and Office 2007.

I'm pretty certain that this validation Add-in must be installed/activated in order for Office to continue to function properly...

I know this because I have had to reinstall MS Office 2003 on my old XP computer (which is now in mothballs) numerous times since I bought it when it was first released. If you do not allow it the Microsoft Office File Validation add-in will keep on nagging you to do so. But don't worry because after it is installed it is not malevolent in any way. And I did not experience any "making computers run very slow" in all those times I reinstalled it. There are many, many things that can make a computer run slowly but - based on my experience anyway, this is not one of them. Most of the people out there in those forums are panicked by the term "validation" because they may be running program that they did not buy and/or may not actually own. And they believe it may uncover this fact after they click OK and install it.

Side Note: Goggling any software program "just because" can sometimes be not as reliable one would hope. And can bring up problems and possible solutions that are not very trustworthy.

Good Luck! -- COMP

Did you close Outlook AT shutdown, or BEFORE shutdown? It makes a difference. The Outlook closing process needs to complete before logging off, restarting, or powering down the computer.

Answer:missing proplus.exe file for microsoft office

Just for the record:Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:? Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable. The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.? Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for ... Read more

I have Microsoft Office 2003, and I tried to upgrade it yesterday, but everytime I tried to upgrade, it asks for the "" file.  I have searched other forums and I could not find any help.  Please any suggestions.  If somebody has Microsoft Office 2003 please look in this location C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\1033\112, I think that file is there, if you find it, please send it to me to [email protected]  Thanks for you help.

Answer:Microsoft Office 2003 file

They would need to have MS Office 2003 Standard Edition, that is the "112" part.  Microsoft suggests that you have multiple versions of Office (Professional, Standard, SBE) and to fix just uninstall all office applications and reinstall them.

Hi there I was writing up my essays on microsoft office 2010 word . Clicked Ctrl S and it has saved into a DOTM file . When I open it there is no text and the file itself is 20Kb , could you please help and tell me how to convert it back to a word document . Many Thanks

Answer:Microsoft Office 2010 saved a DOTM file

Hmmm, did you somehow save it as a template when you named it? Try for the miracle of just switching the extension, but if you can't, then, that's interesting. Make sure you back it up before trying exotic strategie's. Perhaps it's some sort of obscure compression. In that case, attempt to extract it(although I doubt either of these will work).
For future reference, I always write my papers on google docs(because of autosave in the cloud), and then format on Office when I am done. That way, you never lose your words.(downside being, you have to have internet connection.)

hi. I administrator approximately 300 xp and windows 7 32bit computers on a curricular network. we have recently upgraded to office 2010 pro plus and gave encountered the following issue. when users login they can access word 2010 and open .doc files but when trying to open .docx file types there is no program association setup. as our devices are restricted users cannot select open with and choose word 2010. when logged in as admin I have the same issue but can select ooen with word and this resolves the issue with the admin profile. we do not use group policy as our curricular admin network software uses registry profiles to customise windows abd apply changes. is there an HKCU config that can be set to set docx file association to winword.exe. setting HKCU file ext to winword.exe did not resolve the issue is there any other registry entries that would need to be updated to resolve this issue?

Answer:Microsoft Office 2010. docx file association

We have the same issue at work, however lucky for us our problem is when people need to download and print .docx documents. We advise them to save as .PDF and then print. There should be a compatibility pack available for you though?

How do I associate opening a TIF file within Internet Explorer v6.0 with "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" on Windows XP?

Here's the scenario.

Within Windows Explorer on Windows XP, I can double click on a *.tif file and Microsoft Office Document Imaging will open and display the *.tif file. This works fine and as expected. The file association is correct.

But, I'm viewing a database application (Onyx Employee Portal v5.0) that uses Internet Explorer as an interface. Within this Internet Explorer interface, there is a link to a *.tif file. When I click on the link, another Internet Explorer window appears, I see the QuickTime logo appear for a second, then the TIF file appears within the Internet Explorer window. But, I don't want to view the TIF file with Internet Explorer. I want to view the TIF file with Microsoft Office Document Imaging. How do I make my computer understand this?

Answer:TIF file association with Microsoft Office Document Imaging

Its because its not really tif you are opening. If you are clicking a link to the tif then you are really opening a hyperlink more so than a tif file. So what you could so is right click on the link and do a "Save target as" then save the tif to your desktop which would then open it properly.

Hi everyone. I am having a problem opening a file that I was previously able to open and edit with no problem. I am getting two errors. One basically says that the file cannot be accessed and the other basically says that it cannot access the file and that the file may be encrypted. Well, the file is encrypted. I tried to unencrypt the file but I was unsuccessful. I originally encrypted the file using Windows XP which is the operating system that I use on my computer. I fear that the file has become corrupted and cannot be recovered. I can only hope that you all can help me to recover my file. I do not have a backup of the file but I do have a printout of it so I can make it up again if I have to. Unfortunately, I'll have to readd some stuff on it that I have added to the file since the file was printed. Luckily, it is a recent printout. So, can I recover my file? If so, how? I have included screen shots of the two errors but I blacked out the file name for privacy reasons. Thanks in advance!

Answer:Microsoft Office 2002: Excel cannot open a file

Well everyone, the problem is solved. Turns out that my entire Microsoft Office 2002 suite had become corrupted somehow. I haven't scanned for viruses yet but I plan to soon so as to avoid this problem in the future. I am also making sure to do a weekly backup of all my documents from now on. Later!

Microsoft?s plan to ?sandbox? Office documents in the next version of its application suite is an admission that the company cannot keep hackers from exploiting file format bugs, a security analyst said on July 23. ?What?s been happening is that Office has lots of vulnerabilities,? said Gartner?s primary security analyst. ?For the past 18 months, hackers have been fuzzing Office file formats,? he said, referring to the practice of ?fuzzing,? a tactic that relies on automated tools that drop random data into applications to see if, and where, breakdowns occur. Fuzzing has been a hacker?s best friend: Microsoft has repeatedly had to patch file format vulnerabilities in Office applications, most recently in July when it fixed a flaw in Publisher 2007 and in June, when it patched seven vulnerabilities in Excel and two more in Word. ?What?s happening is that the bad guys are using fuzzing tools to find vulnerabilities in Office, and now Microsoft is saying, ?Okay, we can?t find, let alone fix, every vulnerability. So here?s a way to put a sandbox around the vulnerability.? The sandbox technique mentioned is a new addition to Office 2010, the upcoming upgrade to Microsoft?s bestselling Windows application suite. According to a senior security program manager with the Office team, Office 2010 will sport something called ?Protected View? that isolates Word, Excel and PowerPoint files in a read-only environment. Okay, so what I've done recently was that I cloned my old HDD so that I can use my new raptor as the primary and have the old one as the backup (this was all while I had XP SP3). The files associated to MS Office and Adobe (.doc, .xls, .docx, .pdf, etc.) turned into generic icons.

Afterwards, I then upgraded to Vista Ultimate SP1, but unfortunately the problem carried over. I searched for this over other forums and they told me to delete IconCache.db in ~/Users/[User name]/AppData/Local/

I deleted it in hopes of the system recreating the file and the icons will be restored. The system did recreate the file, but unfortunately the icons are still generic. I'm at a loss of ideas, so please help me out!

I wasn't looking properly at the file I was opening, and while I was trying to open a file that I thought was a pdf, I changed what was actually an iso file to an adobe reader file. Since it obviously wasn't a pdf file, when I double clicked it, it asked how I wanted to open it, and I chose from a list of programs adobe reader and clicked the "always open with this program" option. Now all my iso file icons have changed into the adobe icon and they keep opening adobe reader whenever I double click them. How do I get it back to the original state? And are the files damaged or corrupted when I accidentally changed them to open with adobe reader?

Answer:Win XP: accidentally changed iso file to adobe reader file

The .iso's are fine, unless you openned them and saved them, which I'm certain adobe reader won't do. I accidently did this with .exe's, and nothing would run, luckily I was able to use programs and features to uninstall the adobe reader. I suggest you do the same, uninstall the adobe software and reinstall it, then everything should work. There are probably other ways, but as a last resort try what I said.
