Server Error 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied message

Question: Server Error 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied message

I have Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7 and I have msn.com as my home page. When I tried getting onto my home page a little bit ago, a notice came up that said "Server Error 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied". I was able to go on other web sites fine and when I changed the home page (back to msn), the message went away. But other users on the computer have the same problem. I heard someone say it may be the result of a hijackware infection. Could that be the case or something else? Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Server Error 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied message

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Server Error 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied message

Well, it looks like it's not an issue anymore. The other users home pages are working fine now. No error message or anything. Sorry for the trouble.

When I try to open Yahoo email, Gmail OR get Windows Updates it won't let me. When I go to Windows Updates I get the following message.

Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:
Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)

403 - Forbidden: Access is denied.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I've gone to "Tools" in Explorer, but I'm not sure which things to "enable." I don't want to enable everything and have something else go bad.

Thanks

Answer:"Server Error - 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied."

Are you administrator on the PC? You will more than likely need to be.

Here's a KB from Microsoft that may help you. It has a "Fix it for me" option, which should help complete the steps successfully.

A friend has recently gone broadband with Tiscali. When he goes on-line he does indeed access the internet but he cannot load any web pages. He can use the connection to download updates in cases where pages are not displayed (such as updating Windows, AVG, and anti-spy ware). He is not on a home network. On accessing the Internet, it goes on line with Tiscali broadband at 100Bps, the on-line icon pops into the Notification area but he is confronted with a page saying:-403 Forbidden You were denied access because: Access denied by access control list.I have checked all his settings and they are correct. Tiscali has done the same. Tiscali at first said that there was a problem with its network but Tiscali seems to have forgotten this in our latest communications. He doe not have separate user accounts in XP. He does not go through a proxy and all security settings are set at medium strengthI tried unsuccessfully accessing pages with the XP firewall off, and also very briefly with the AVG anti-virus turned off. Tiscali have promised to query BT to see if BT is blocking all pages. (Tiscali broadband uses the BT exchange as it is not unbundled in this area. Line rental is paid to Tiscali though).I switched him back to a dial-up connection temporarily and could then access any pages. This seems to indicate that Internet Explorer is not the culprit. The Tiscali modem is a 4 port Ethernet router/modem, we wondered if a firewall in this router is causing the problem, however, there i... Read more

On Windows7 Pro,  trying to run IIS.  The way I am used to execute is  on the browser "localhost".  I used to have the code in the directory  C:\inetpub\wwwroot.   Even before I copy,  I am hoping to see
the image IIS welcome page.  Once it is successful, want to copy the code as that was the way I used to do in Window XP.    However I am getting the following message.  I have administrator access to the machine and gave full permissions

Error message 401.3: You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied (access denied due to Access Control Lists). Ask the Web server's administrator to give you access to 'C:\inetpub\wwwroot'.

Can someone help me to address this issue.  Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi. I've now installed d-link air plus extreme GDWL-G520 and I've just successfully managed to delete the derbiz.com virus, using and installing all the info from your 'read and run me first page'. (i couldn't connect to the internet, so i burnt the info onto a disc and uploaded it).

i can now connect to the internet (ie i can get on msn messenger and update windows). However, when i try to open interent explorer, i get the following message:

Forbidden
You were denied access because:
Access denied by access control list.

Please help!

thanks

Answer:Forbidden: Access Denied

I don't even think it has something to do with the newly installed d-link, i think you got to check your provider?, your control list? and your ie itself maybe you have accidentally change some of the settings regarding your ie.

Good day and thank you for reviewing this post.
I have been dealing with a computer that had multiple viruses ..... including the TDSS. I have successfully removed TDSS and others from machines using a cocktail of Vipre, MWB, Avast boot scan, and Combofix. I have probably done 10 of these in the past 2 months with no side effects.
Recently I have experiences 2 machines that refuse to access MS update site after full removal. I have "verified" my complete removal by running MWB and Vipre in safe mode and getting no hits.
I have tried Dial-a-fix, and I have followed the instuctions as MS for this 403 Forbidden error to no avail.
All else seems to work well ... web sites, email, programs, etc. The only thing I cannot seem to do is MS updates ... I can even update MWB and Avast ... but not MS updates.
Does anyone out there have any experience with this or suggestions as to what I should do to regain my ability to do updates?
Thank you very much for your time and advice.

This message only appears on the desktop when 2nd User logs into windows with a box in the middle to click 'Ok' after a few clicks it disappears & everything seems fine. It doesn't appear when I access main user (administrator) account. How can I find out what it relates to, as it doesn't come up with any other message.

Answer:'Error - Access is Denied' Message.

Could it be anything to do with the access level given to the 2nd user? Have a look in user accounts and see what type it is and the level limit.

Hello All, Can somebody help with an error message I keep getting on my parents desk top PC running 'Vista' each time I try and install my new Epson DX 8400 printer from the installation CD. It installs upto the Epson file Mangager which then gives me the following error message: 'access is denied (0x5). There is also more error message pertaining the the C:\Programmes etc etc but I have not written this down yet. I have contacted Epson technical whom have informed me this is a Vista problem so I tried to install the same printer on my PC running Vista and it was successful first time and it also installed the desk top icon for the Epson File Manger utility. Incidentally, my parents PC is still able to print from the Epson but that is all, there is no utility hence the error message which just leaves me confused. Does anybody know a simple fix for this problem.

Many thanks in anticipation !

I'm running XP Home SP1 on an HP Pavilion 504n desktop, and trying to finally update to SP2. FYI, the computer had a lot of spyware, viruses, etc., which I've cleaned up using Webroot Spy Sweeper with Antivirus, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Tuneup Utilities 2007. With the exception of a pretty infrequent reboot or crash, the computer is now working beautifully.

About halfway through the SP2 install I get the "Access is denied" error message...

The problem isn't in the usual vnd.ms.radio (infact, that file isn't mentioned at all in the setupapi file), but in the HKLM\\SYSTEM\CurrentControllerSet\Services\ssdpsrv\\DependOnService...
Problem is, that doesn't exist in the registry. It's not in the SSDPSRV directory itself, and the only subdirectories are a pyramid of 'ASCII art' jibberish (none of which contain anything except a "(Default)" value). There is, however, a sub-folder named 16b2c96a0c41f4dfdb4d3cc228a4f819 in the folder c:\windows\softwaredistribution\download.

For about a week I have been getting the following message on start-up and Windows (XP Pro) has fully loaded "Error loading C:\Windows\difxshs.dll Access is denied". I have searched for that file to check its permissions but it is nowhere to be found (and yes I did enable hidden and system files). Also the screen dims and brightens for several minutes. Additionally, I am getting new browser pop ups of IE7. All windows update are done. Doing an AV scan has revealed nothing.

Whether I sign on as a User or as the Administrator and key in "msconfig" the following error message appears: "System Configuration Utility An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes."

I called the computer manufacturer and spoke with a tech. He walked me through several things, but none of them worked.

Signing on in Safe Mode and in Safe Mode with Networking I can access msconfig. I've gone into the Services tab and checked to remove all Microsoft items. I can identify four of the five non-Window applications as being legitimate. The one I cannot identify is: PrismXL from New Boundary Technology. I've unchecked that, but still cannot access msconfig in regular Windows boot-up.

Has anyone seen this particular error message, and if so what is the solution? Thank you.

I have a new server running MS Win 2000 with 4 desktops running MS Win XP. The problem I have is when logged into the network users do not have any permissions to do anything! Can't write to the HDD, change date & time, create and save files!

I have given them every permission on the server I can think of, still no go. I also cannot make their logon ID's administrators (or power users) on their desktop. I have turned off the firewall on the desktops (router has a firewall).

I am at a loss on what to do next. This is critical for running the office!
Any help appreciated.

Dear Specialists:

I am running Vista Home Premium on a new computer. Microsoft technicians have been helping me with multiple problems. At one point, they decided the Vista was corrupt, deleted my hard drive and re-installed Vista.

For the latest problem, they have had me download High Jack This and run it. I received this error message:

For some reason your system denied writes access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked files are in this domain Hijack This may not be able to fix this. If this happens you need to edit the file yourself. To do this click Start Run and type: Notepad C:\Windows\System 32\drivers\etc\hosts and press Enter. Find the line(S) Hijack this reports and delete them. Save the file as Hosts and reboot
For Vista simply exit Hijack This right click on the Hijack this icon and choose run as administrator.

High Jack showed me a list of files, not one of which was the one Microsoft told me to delete. There was a warning message from High Jack telling me not to do anything but upload the list and let someone on a forum look at it.

I haven't attached the list because I don't know if I am in the right place.

Thank you,
Michael

1.Problem Started 2 weeks ago. Not sure if this is related --around that time I tried to add E-texteditor and didn't realize I need to install cygwin. I stopped installing and removed cygwin.

PROBLEM:
When downloading a file (For example -- a kindle file .azw or an .exe.) using IE* 32-bit , window pops up to RUN or SAVE.

I spent over an hour with microsoft on remote access and the Tech suggestion was to transfer Effected USER files to NEW user since he thought the user settings were compromised. What a pain

What I know--
I did create TEST USER

I downloaded Xfire to enable chat while playing COD4. While in Xfire I downloaded 2 patches for COD4 (v 1.4 & 1.5). While downloading, Comodo came up with an update request which I allowed. I stopped the downloads for COD4 because they where taking too long. Then I tried to open COD4 and got RUNDLL message "Error loading NvCpl.dll' Access Denied. Retry with same problem. I went to Control Panel to remove the suspected Xfire (which I can live without) villain but could not open 'Add/Remove Programs' with RUNDLL message "Error Loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll Access Denied". I then restored to earlier date (this past Thursday) with same results. I then did the attached HJT log to send to my friendly BC friends. Oh! I use an external hard drive to transfer files between my laptop and desktop and i've recently been having some issues. I put some files on the drive from the desktop and tried to open them and it said "Cannot open file....access is denied" and asked if someone else was using the file or if the drive was write protected. Neither is true. So I plugged the drive back in to see what the issue was and it was fine. I rebooted both PCs and turned the hard drive off and on, and all of a sudden, I couldn't open the files from the laptop on the desktop, and couldn't open some of the desktop files on even the desktop!

I've done my research, and I think I know the problem. When I go to Tools->Folder Options->View tab, I scroll down to where the "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" check box is missing. I'm the administrator and only user of the computer, so I have no idea why it's there. Thanks in advance for any replies.

hi all- 1st post here! my son is having a prob with desktop. he's running vista, with IE. here is what he's got going on. when he signs online, he's getting an error message that reads 403 forbidden. he can't access the web. no sites at all. i've tried to look into it and nothing is working out. i'm typing in the right addresses too. he able by the way to sign on to AIM and his music, but i think that is because he's not having to route to an address on the web. last week is when he started to notice the problem. he went to sign on and it went to comcast and asked if he was a customer or technician. he knew something was wrong at that point and he got off line. not been able to click online since. i've tried sys restore only to get an error for that too. i've reset the IE and it didn't help either. when i go into trusted/restricted sites, the thing tells me that the address has to read https:// not the normal http:// that seems strange to me. i can't get on to download anything to run and check if there is malware or what causing the problem. its a brand new puter, couple months old and he desperately needs this for college. can anyone please, please, help me with this problem?

HI

if this IS a new computer...maybe a silly question but did it come with an antivirus program ( probably Norton )preinstalled and if so was it activated?

also, by what method does it connect to the internet , who is the ISP and might IT have an antivirus protection method in it ????

does it have any other protection prograsm on it and if so when if ever where they updated and run ?

also; has the computer been allowed to go to the microsoft update site to get all the vista windows updates?

I get this message often when searching for something, mostly in google.  When this happens I switch from explorer to chrome or visa versa.  It happens in both at different times.  I did a search and saw that different anti virus programs were "supposed to work"  of course I purchased 2 but neither works.  I have had my anti virus program for years and love it. It is called NOD.  Not sure what else to tell you except thanks!

The above message has appeared recently on my ecafe, (French made) netbook. I have no idea why this should be there but have managed to access the internet from my history list or by typing in the website. The home screen, which is giving this message, would normally show the ecafe home page (now forbidden) I have copied and pasted the information below in the hope someone can advise me on what I can do to rectify this. On reflection, the only thing that I have done recently, which might have caused this, was to plug in an external usb CD/DVD drive to load printer software. This drive had worked successfully on the netbook before, but on this occasion it switched the screen off. I thought the power cable might be at fault although the cable works fine on my other laptop.[b]Access forbidden![/b]You don't have permission to access the requested directory. So I'm running XP Pro, finally updating to SP2...

About halfway through I get the "Access is denied" error message...

I followed Microsoft's instructions to locate the registry subkey causing the problem, however (as shown in the attached picture) the problem isn't in the usual vnd.ms.radio (infact, that file isn't mentioned at all in the setupapi file), but in the DependOnService...
Problem is, it doesn't exist under the directories listed...

As shown in the second uploaded picture, it's not in the SSDPSRV directory itself, and the only subdirectories are a pyramid of jibberish (none of which contain anything except a "(Default)" value)...

And so I've hit a wall and my brain hurts...
Any idears, fellers?

HELP!!!

Every time I download a winamp skin from their site it comes up with the error message stated in the subject after it has downloaded 99% of the file!

When downloading, the file is temporarily placed in here:

"C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\6j8XMZO1\filename"

Is it just because I am not logged in as an administrator, or is it something else???

How can I overcome this problem???

Cheers )

GeoffTek

Answer:Error message "Access to the specified device, path, or file is denied" when download

It is indeed probably because you are not logged in as the Admin. When you download skins for Winamp, they self extract and install to the proper directory. Sounds like the skin is coming down OK but when it goes to extract and install, it stops as you don't have access.

I have a new Dell computer with windows xp operating system. My old computer was a gateway with windows xp also. The mother board on the gateway crashed and I could not find a replacement thus I purchased the new dell. I extracted the hard drive from the gateway and installed in an external drive case. All works well and I am able to retreve data from the gate way hard drive with one exception. While the hard drive was installed in the gateway I elected to make some of the folders private, ie right click on folder, click on sharing and security and clicking on private. This worked fine in the gateway but when I installed in external hard drive I am getting an "access denied" error message when trying to open with the Dell. How can this be fixed? Thanks

After new installs of both XP Home & XP Pro (I upgraded to Pro hoping it would fix the problem, and reinstalled) I continue to get an access denied error upon trying to access and create most folders on each of my networked PC's hard disks, however I can access and perform file mgmt in all folders on two volumes set up on an external hard disk on one of the PCs just fine. This is a cabled Linksys network. I have spent 2 hours with MSFT level 1 & level 2 support and they are stumped. Now I'm waiting for a 'level 3 consultant' to call me back in about a week since he called the wrong number and missed my 3 hour window yesterday. The 1st PC is a Dell Latitude CPx and the 2nd PC is a Compaq Presario 7478.

Anyway, if I try to create a folder, I get 'Invalid folder name or path, or folder already exists' or 'Unable to create new folder: Access Denied'. Oddly enough, I can browse a couple directory trees, but none others, and even create a folder and do file mgmt off of the root of both PCs, just not most subdirectories. This all worked fine under Windows 2000 Pro.

MSFT walked me through all of the standard solutions, to no avail. Any thoughts? Thanks! Rick.

Answer:"Access Denied" error message in XP Pro & Home

Here's the Solution to the Problem

MSFT came through. To fix this problem, run secpol.msc from START. Drill down to Local Policies | Security Options. The 'Network Access: Sharing and security model for local accounts' should be set to Classic. Mine was somehow set to Guest. It can be changed by double clicking on it and all will be well.

Hi All, I had the same error (Access Denied on this server) on several websites. Tried all the solutions offered here, to no avail.

Finally discovered that our fixed IP that we just got (new office, new ISP), had been blacklisted on all the big blacklisting services. So a quick call to our ISP and a new fixed IP and I'm able to access all sites again. FYI, the two sites we knew about that couldn't be accessed were www.expedia.com and www.dhl.com and www.dhl.cz.

So if you find yourself in a similar spot, I hope this info helps!

Answer:Access Denied on this server

Just make sure all of your computers have been tested for viruses or you may find yourself blacklisted again.

I have a prob with System Volume Information folders. I understand the Sys. Vol. Info. folder in the root directory is supposed to be there, but after installing Microsoft's Baseline Security Analyzer a new Sys. Vol. Info. (SVI) folder appeared under C:\ and on my external hard drive J:\.

SVI folders details--
root directory SVI folder:

I've read VERY many of your posts concerning "Access is denied" probs and tried all the suggestions to delete the 2 "extra" SVI folders. In Killbox nothing happens. In MoveOnBoot nothing happens. In HJT when I choose the J:\SVI folder, this message appears: J:\System Volume Information is not accessible. Access is denied.

I can delete the 2 offending SVI folders in Safe Mode using Microsoft's article, but upon rebooting into normal Windows, the 2 folders magically reappear as if I hadn't done a thing.

Answer:access is denied message

To eliminate the two folders just turn off System Restore. Control Panel>System>System Restore, and check the box for "Turn off System Restore on all drives." System Restore is of limited value to an exterior hard drive so you may just want to select that one to turn off, and keep System Restore for your local (Windows) disc.

Alright, I have just recently gotten a new computer. I decided to take the hard drive out of my old comp and stick it in my new comp so I dont have to burn DVDs upon DVDs of my random shit. But when I go to access my old documents folder, I get an Access is Denied message. Tooltips say the folder is empty. I am very worried that I might have lost my data somehow.

Running windows XP pro, hard drive is 120gb NTFS.

Answer:PLEASE HELP: Access is Denied message

Can you see the directory structure on the "Old PC" drive when it's plugged in on the new rig?

If so, My suggestion is to place it back in the old rig, create a appropriately named directlry such as "Archive" with permissions set on the directory to "Allow all local users access"

Then copy/move all the mp3's/pr0n/gamefiles/iso's to that directory.

Once you've spirited all of the files to this directory, swap the drive back into the "New Rig" and give it another shot.

The reason you're having trouble is there's a security descriptor mismatch between the user account that's trying to access the resource, and the security descriptors that are locking down the specific directories.

On second thought, you could put the drive in the old PC, right click the "C:" drive select "Properties" This displays the "Local Disk (C: ) Properties" window.
Click the "Sharing" tab and click the "I understand that the risk but want to share the root of the drive" link and this will display the "Local Sharing and Security pane" This will tell you to drag the folder to "Shared Documents." So do that instead.

Just a wild guess but those two idears should work

I have Vista home premium on an Acer dual core aspire with 3 gig of Ram. I have had this machine 3 years with only the normal vista problems. This week or maybe a few days more I am getting a red circle with a slash over my Dvd RW Drive E: on my directory screen. Never seen this before, and when I try to use the drive to format a CD, It tells me I don't have sufficient rights to perform this operation. Now this makes no sense, I am the computer administrator. When I go under properties to security to try and change ownership, under the current ownership heading it displays "Unable to display current owner." I can't seem to get this corrected!

I am fixing to go to Windows 7, but not if I can't read a CD!

How do I fix this problem and what caused it. My hard drive is only 4 months old (320 gig). so disk degradation should not be a problem.

Thanks

I'm getting this message when opening a users account (as administrator) in exchange.

Microsoft Exchange Administrator
Access denied trying to contact Windows NT domain controller.
Microsoft Exchange Administrator
ID no: c1031029

Recently ran some MS patches and update antivirus (eTrust) on this box. Also getting an "access denied" when trying to end processes (eTrust are the ones I tried).

It's like I'm not getting authenticated as an administrator or something (I can start and stop services?). I'm looking at various security settings and stuff but nothing is looking like an obvious solution.

Any help (like a guess) would be greatly appreciated.

make sure you are logged on using an account that has permission to view the shares on the remote computer. ie. is log on an admin still there? ?meaning your not a guest on your on pc!?.
1. Kill fire wall, ?try this frist' !
2 . Change settings in your IE browser to default 'optional'

We have a group of laptops that have been partitioned to place "images" of the OS onto. Basically we create a workstation configuration, create an image, and put the image on the hard drive partition, so we don't have to access a server or external hard drive, because that takes too long.

So, we want a copy of the most recent image before we make any changes, and overwrite it with the new image, so we want to copy from the partition to an external hard drive or even to the C: drive, but it keeps giving an access denied message, like the computer is still writing to the partition or like those files are in use. But I don't know what it could be. We have some desktop computers that were used in an identical manner (as far as I know) and there is no problem copying the files, from the hard drive, but the image files won't budge. I can even go in and format the drive if I wanted to, I just can't copy from.

Any ideas on how to get that image from the partition onto a removable disk or even onto the C:\ so I could copy it from the C to the removable disk.

I wonder if I could go into the command prompt and move it that way...hmmm confused

BTW, it is XP Pro with SP2. Thanks.

I have had to do a re-install in windows 7 because of a hardware failure that was causing my PC to crash. I have backed up my files, and re-installed them into the my docs folder on the desktop, but when I try to open them it is saying that I don't have permission. I was infected with the FBI Malware yesterday. I ran Avira and it quarantined a bunch of files, but when I went to update Avira, it wouldn't let me update. I am attempting to retrieve files from a Sandisk Cruzer flash drive, but I get a message saying "G not accessible, access is denied."

I went to change the permissions to take ownership of the drive but there was no security tab.

I searched thru the forums and first tried the recommendation to download this:
Add-Restore_Security_Tab.reg But nothing changed.

Then I tried to add the tab in Group Policy Editor, but I couldn't find a group policy editor.( I have Windows 7 Home Premium)
I am not very well-versed in computers so I don't want to go any further on my own. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!!

Hi there. Just to check with you, does this happen to all USB drives or just this particular flash drive? Might need to check on the format; NTFS, or FAT32.

Hey. I'm having small problem but seems like that problem has become larger now.

Okay, I'll try to start explaining this from the begining. Long time ago I read article (from trusted site) about how to make computer a bit more secure. It was about HOSTS-file. I downloaded that file (autoinstaller script). When I tried to run it, I just noticed a small black window which disappeared as soon as it appered. It had some text in it.

I decided to run it as long as I could take a screenshot of it, because I wanted to know what there reads. I took a screenshot I read it: There was reading: 'K?ytt? estetty' which is Finnish (yes, I'm from Finland and using Finnish Vista). That 'K?ytt? Estetty' means something like 'Access denied'.

Later I saw adverst about VistaGlazz program. I thought 'I want to use that program, old Vista desktop layout is boring'. I installed it and tried to use it. When I clicked 'patch files' (it will patch some files from system32) I got error message: ' Access denied'

See what is my problem? Yesterday I tried to install HOSTS-file again and tried to use autoinstaller script. Again 'Access Denied'.

I'm administrator on my computer but I don't have all rights! This is my computer and I would like to use it as I want. I have contacted many times to local computer shop, the place where I bought this laptop about two years ago. They did not have any clue why this happens and said: contact microsoft support.

That is why I'm here. I want to have ful... Read more

Answer:Annoying 'Access Denied' message

Hi -

Activate the Vista hidden admin account -

START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe above under programs - select run as admin. Then type

Code:

net user administrator /active:yes

Logoff your account and the user account named Administrator will be waiting for you at the logon screen. 2x-click on it.

You will be running at a higher permission level, but a less secure one as well. If that app you are installing had been malicious in nature, your current account would have stopped it - The "access denied" message tells us that. If logged onto the hidden admin account - the app will go right thru every time.

The way to do this installation in Vista & Windows 7 - bring up an elevated administrative cmd/DOS prompt - like you just did -
START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe above under programs - select run as admin -

Then enter the path + file name of the app

-or- RIGHT-click on the app's EXE file name, select "Run as Administrator".

There are reasons that Vista does things the way it does. Windows 7 follows these security measures as well.

Your call, but I stronly advise agaist patching Vista -- it will not hold up for very long. Only patches that come in through Windows Updates are allowed. Not to say it is impossible, though.

Regards. . .

Hi there,

I have recently upgraded to XP Pro from 2000 Pro. I have set up user accounts for all of my family as we all share a computer in the house.

Because i know the most about computers i have taken the role of the Admin, and the other accounts are limited access ones, however when one member of my family attempts to access certain folders it says access denied. They are not new folders, they were present before the upgrade and were carried over to XP.

I dont know why it wont let her access some folders and dont want to give her full access to the system incase files go missing or system files become damaged etc... you know how it is

Any ideas please anyone?

We just added a new domain controller and moved the shared folders from the old dc to the new dc. The old dc was on server 2000 and the new one is on server 2003. I have given proper access to all folders so the security should be fine. However employees are unable to access the Shared drive. If I go under the Sharing properties from the share and add Everyone, they get access, but this also allows them access to read all folders in this shared drive.
Not sure what extra setting I'm missing. Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Active Directory, Server 2003, only one server box

Just a few files in the same folders were dening access to users who used to have access.

After some poking around I found that under the Security tab after right clicking the file there was only one user with permissions. It was an icon with a question mark followed by a bunch of numbers. Does anyone know what this means or what did this?

I added the administrators group back to the file and the mystery user went away and all the users that should have access to the file reappeared. I'm just wondering if I should be concerned about something more important happening to the server....

Answer:Server 2003 Access Permissions Denied

Just a guess...

The only thing I have found so far is in a multiuser environment if you do not prevent users from replicating (a process of copying a dbase so that two or more copies can exhange updates of data or replicated objects an exchange called synchronization) by users with set dbase passwords can and will prevent other users from being able to open the dbase or dbase object that is replicated.

As for the icon and reference numbers the only user that had access may have created a hyperlink to the specific dbase folders and has the option of setting an icon image and the numbers may reference a the hyperlink address and\or subaddress ????

How do i access the already built-in administrator account so i can make security/privilege changes so that i can change time servers using the command line. because every time i use the NET TIME command it gives me a "access denied" error; which tells me something, only Im not sure what needs to be changed. Also, it says I already am a administrator so why is it giving me a access denied message? This is in Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit.

Hi allI am in the process of trying to help a friend who has given me a hard drive so that I can try to access it to copy/move some of his important files on to another HDD, USB key etc. After this is done, I will either give it back to him so that he can format it and then put Windows back on there and so on?However, here is the problem: -The drive itself has 15GB of data that I want to try and copy; I have tried to use it as a slave device in a PC as well as in an external HDD case.Windows is also installed on there as well because there is a Windows folder on the HDD with all of the files, folders and updates that Windows has and needs. When I try to move one of the folders that he wants to me to save for him, I get the message: -"Cannot move or copy ********""Access is denied"..... and ....."Cannot copy or move ntuser.dat""Make sure that the disc is not copy protected or not in use" (or something along these lines.)How can I or do I go about getting access to the folders/files that I want to copy/move?Is it a rights/permissions issue? - how can this be fixed? Please let me know - all responses gratefully received.RegardsHappy37

When I try to go into one of my portable hard drives, this error comes up:  "J:\ is not accessible. Access is denied." Please help me reunite laptop and portable drive.  What happened: During repairs, a tech re-installed Windows 10.   Now the computer (or Windows) recognizes the WD My Passport Ultra, but not the HP pd1000a SimpleSave, which is labeled HP but is also WD. Both external drives use USB 3.0.  I've tried many ideas, such as uninstalling and reinstalling the drive.  Software for the SimpleSave drive and for the laptop itself are on the inaccessible drive.  So is a lot of digital music.  The drive:  Shows up in Device Manager. Device Manager says the disk is working properly. Driver screen says driver is correct.Shows up with the other drives under ?This PC? in File Explorer. Right-clicking the drive name in File Explorer brings up "Properties" whichsays the drive is working properly.can populate it in "Volumes." lists it among all drives.Shows in ?connected devices? in the "Devices" page in Settings.Webroot anti-virus sees it and scans it. Does NOT show up in Disk Management. Is inaccessible to the "error checking" tool in "Properties":  "The disk check could not be performed because Windows can't access the disk."

Hi all.

I have a strange issue (or so it seems to me that i am a newbie) . I try to use a small utility which reads massively *.txt files and if they are saved as ANSI it saves them as Unicode.

The problem is that when i run it (run as administrator) i get an error message saying "Cannot open file. Access is denied message"

I am not lazy (or so i think) and i have read the tutorials in here regarding take ownership and the problem still persists.I really don't know what to do.

Please tell me your suggestions?

Thank you for your time reading this.

Regards,
theobserver.

Answer:Cannot open file Access is denied message

Hello theobserver,

Are you able to open the .txt files normally?

When you took ownership, did you also set permissions to "Allow" your account "Full control" of the file/folder as well?

I am trying to clean up my computer and remove any un needed files.  My wife in the past has done the system recover and everytime it happens it stores music, photos and other files.  So everytime you do that, you have two or more copies of the same files.  Although they are not on the desktop they are stored in the C drive.  When I try to delete those extra files, I keep getting the following message "Access is Denied" and we are the only user on the computer, so we are the administrator.  How do I get acces or how can I get rid of that message.  I would understand if we were not the administrator but again, we are the only profile/user on this computer.  Thanks.

I am running WindowsXp. My system gave me corrupt /sytem/config file message. I was unable to re-start in safe-mode, safe-mode with command prompt or Last Good Known Condtion. I boot the system with WindowsXp bootable media and selected Repair that lead me to command prompt. I came here to rescue my data from c:\ drive before formating it. But as I want to access any of the files/folder, I get this error message:
c:>cd Docume~1
Access Denied !

Please help. Remember that there are more than one user accounts on the system.
Regards

Answer:Access Denied ! message in command prompt

Your access through the Recovery mode will be very limited. Even if you enable access in Group Policy (needs to be done from the booted OS ahead of time), you will still find that you can't access very much.

What were you planning to do if you did get access? There are not too many options in the RC.

You would be best off making a bootable version of XP: UBCD4Win.

Or at least try the Ultimate Boot CD and access your files that way.

Howdy everyone,

I'm having quite a perplexing problem.
In part of our network, we have Windows 98 computers (and old ones at that) logging into a Windows 2000 Server. Up until now, we've had very few problems... at least none like this.

Last week, everything was working fine, but as of today, our Win98 machines are denied logon access to the domain. Most password errors are greeted with the yellow exclamation point saying no domain was able to process blah blah blah. However, we are confronted with the dreaded red X dialog box and "The domain password you supplied is not correct, or access to your logon server has been denied."

Nothing appears in the Event Viewer when a logon is attempted. Because of this, it appears to me that the password isn't even being processed at all. We have begun reformatting one server, but we are attempting to find a way to work around this problem on another part of our network facing the exact same situation.

We've done quite a bit of googling and have found some possible remedies, but none have worked so far. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks in advance, unless we find a solution with which I will follow-up and post.

Answer:Win98 Logon Access Denied to Win2000 Server

Woot! We fixed the problem.

We found Event Code 5774 under event viewer/ system. This error was posting every few seconds. According to Microsoft, Error Code 5774 says the DNS address associated with the domain must be at the top of the DNS address list on the primary domain controller. Although MS suggested starting and stopping the netlogon service, a reboot was necessary and thus cleared our problem up immediately.

Any comments are welcome, but I think we're good to go.

I received this error when trying to generate a new certificate for the CA server. When generating the certificate it stopped the CA server, then this error was received when it was trying to restart the server. Note This server previously had a valid certificate but when clients were trying to access the server they were getting a message that it had an invalid certificate, hence why I am trying to generate a new one. Any help here?

I have a new server running MS Win 2000 with 4 desktops running MS Win XP. The problem is when users are logged into the network they do not have any permissions to do anything!

I just installed a new 2003 R2 server as the only server. It is a Domain controller. I'm running Terminal Services. When I assign a share (drive z:) for the Terminal server client and place .ink and .bat files in it. User's with full rights cannot edit or execute the .bat file."Can't find Path or files, You may not have permissions" is the message. I drag the files from the Z: share to the terminal server user's desk top and I can edit the file.I can't find a policy that fixes this issue.

I had installed a program on my computer XP and when I tried to delete it some of the files would not delete - message said access denied, were they write protected etc.

Is there a way to delete such files. I am a beginner and am angry that the downloaded software included this aspect. Is that common?

I need help.

Thanks.

Answer:How to Deal with Access Denied Message When Deleting Program

You shouldn't delete an installed program.
You should use Add/Remove, in the Control Panel.

If you deleted it, try reinstalling the program, then use Add/Remove to remove it.

If these are left over files, from an Add/Remove, try deleting them in Safe mode.

Answer:[SOLVED] access denied message comes while deleting file

Hi 82urock and welcome to TSF !

This is probably an ownership problem if you've moved the folders as is with your old user account : your new user account doesn't have the proper credentials to delete the files. Follow these instructions and don't forget to disable simple file sharing to get access to the sharing & security tab since this is XP Pro.

I am trying to access a page on a website and I am getting a message stating "Access is denied due to invalid credentials." When I search Google about this message all the "answers" to this problem discuss something called iis and application pools which I know absolutely nothing about.
