Seagate ext harddrive, Bad disk. Need to Recover.

Question: Seagate ext harddrive, Bad disk. Need to Recover.

A couple weeks ago my USB External harddrive got unplugged and when i plugged it back in, it asked me to Format it. It game me a "2HC015KJ" Error code. Its 500GB but now appears as 2000GB. Ive tried to use Partiton Wizard 7, but when doing a quick scan for a couple days, it was only at 163608 sectors, and still at 0%.

Preferred Solution: Seagate ext harddrive, Bad disk. Need to Recover.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have this WD My Passport external portable harddrive which I have used for a couple of years. I was writing something to the drive one day when the USB connection seems to be somewhat loose and the drive disconnected momentarily and reconnected itself but the file I was trying to write ended prematurely...

Now when I try to use the Seagate Harddrive test tool for windows and do a Short Generic test and the result failed.. I am fear it might have been caused by the disconnection and might eventually corrupt the entire drive... I try to run chkdsk but there aren't any errors detected it seems and files seems to be accessible as normal... Is there a way to fix the harddrive without losing data in the drive or confirm the drive is indeed failing?

Answer:Seagate Harddrive test tool fail but harddrive data seems intact

Run the most thorough and extensive test available with the WD hard drive utilities.

If it fails the thorough test, you may have a warranty claim.

Or the Seagate tool. Whatever you have. Your title is confusing.

Yes you can but none of those products offer a decent defragging method and defragging is not really required that much either.

First of all, I want to point out that I have very little knowledge of technology.

I have a NTFS Seagate 2TB Go Flex Desk external hard disk drive. A couple months ago, I found that it had a problem where my laptop could detect it, but couldn't access it and needed to "reformat" it. I left it alone for a while.

Recently, I tried plugging it in again, and behold, it seemed to work okay and I could see all the files and so on. I tried chkdisk without the fixing part (/f). I didn't want to "fix" it until as last resort because it seems to imply some data will be lost. It said there were a lot of bad sectors.

I couldn't read some of the files (most of them were rar files) in my hard disk, and had "read error" and "data error (cyclic redundancy check)". So I basically moved all the files which were normal out of the disk as I couldn't move the others ("can't read from source file or disk") and now I'm left with the broken files, most of which are important. 40gb of 16,000 files.

Is there any hope for me to recover those files? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: after this, how would I deal with the bad sectors?

Answer:Disk read error for files in the harddrive, want to recover files.

OK! The bad sectors are always one of the killers of data on a hard drive. Thatís why we are always asked to back up our needed data at least on two separate drives. So, in the future, you should learn to keep at least two copies of your important data on separate drives or locations.
But, right now, since your drive still could be read on your computer, you could try to run some data recovery programs to take chances. Nowadays, many data recovery programs are developed to help people resolve these troubles.

But, if you are not sure, you could firstly try some drive data recovery freeware such as Recuva, TestDisk and iCare Data Recovery Free, etc.
But, if any data recovery software could not make a difference, you could consult a data recovery expert for help and prepare enough money for it.

Good luck!

Hi, I have a 500gb, harddrive wich doesn't start, it worked perfectly before, and now just suddenly it wont start at all. I'm not angry about it yet becuase I still have hope this can get fixed.

I pop the adapter in, nothing happens, plug the stuff to the computer, nothing happens. I got no clue what to do really. IF it can destroy the adapter if I put a ac adapter for a portable computer inte it while it was off, that can be it. OR if it got broken by safely lying in my bag. Just tell me how I can fix this, Please. I'm So thankful for anyone who can help me with this.

I'm considering a new harddrive, but until I ran across an attractive offer for the 1.5TB, I had been thinking of the 1TB instead. The larger drive has the following specs:

Formatted Capacity : 1.5TB
Interface Type: Serial ATA-300
Buffer Size: 32MB
Spindle Speed: (RPM) 5900 RPM
Average Latency: 4.16 ms
Data Transfer Rate: Buffer to Host Up to 300MBps
Sustained Throughput: Up to 115MBps
Ports and Connectors: 7-pin Serial ATA Connector
Manufacturer Warranty: 5 Year Limited Warranty

The thing that stands out in my eye is that the spindle speed is slow compared to the 1TB, which is 7200 RPM, but I think the warranty is a bit longer.

I recall recently reading an article posted in the forums news board that said that the 1 TB was the fastest drive in it's class, but the sustained throughput of this drive is slightly faster...I think.

The extra 500GBs would definitely be a plus, but would it really perform as well as the 1TB? Is there any other aspect to consider?

Answer:Seagate 1.5TB Harddrive

that...is an odd RPM value for a HD

A while back I bought a Seagate 1TB harddrive, but until recently it was just stored away and not used.
Recently I wanted to expand a XP system I have containing a M4A79XTD Evo mboard, so I just popped in the 1TB. But, to my surprise, the harddrive showed up as only 32MB. So I went into Ubuntu(dualboot with XP) and format the drive, then restart. Back in XP it finally showed up as 939GB. Then I turned off the computer. When I turned it back on later, the drive was back at showing 32MB.

The only thing that worked was when I used ext2 on Ubuntu to format the drive. I wanted to do a clean OS install on the 1TB, but no OS under the sun wants to install, because it jumps back to showing 32MB. I can only store files with Ubuntu under ext2.

I've tried the drive in other computers, with various cables, external enclosures, etc.

So now my question is, do I have a nice looking paperweight, or do I miss something important?

I noticed on these two drives they have a jumper pin on them
with jumper pin 1.5 g/sec
without jumper pin 3.0 g/sec

If my motherboard is compatible with the 3.0 g/sec transfer rate
can I pull the jumper out, or do the drives only operate at that speed in a raid configuration or is it even worth the hassle ?

Answer:Seagate 500 & 750 gig Harddrive queston

THat jumper is so that the faster Sata 2 (300Gb/s) drives will work on the older Sata (150Gb/s) sata controllers. If your controllers are Sata 2 then yo can remove the jumper and not worry about it.

Hi guys,

I'm really in desperate need of help right now. My harddrive just died and all my essays and school stuff are in it and the due dates are within days.

So I turned on my pc this afternoon, did some stuff and turned it off, then i wanted to turn it on again but the harddrive is no longer detected by BIOS.The bios gives the typical message of no harddrive detected, plz insert boot media and press a key blah blah blah.i also noticed that the whole start up becomes incredibly slow, even for loading the bios setup. I bought this new pc during xmas and its just been a lil bit over 3 months.

seagate barracuda 7200.11 500Gbytes
motherboard is Asus P5QL Pro
4gig mem.
geforce 9800gt
intel 2.5Ghz

the machine's been perfectly normal for 3 months except very occassional blue screens, and now the hd is not dectected all of a sudden.

i did not install anything or remove anything in hardware/software,i tried a different sata cable for dvd-rw which is recognized by bios, plugging into a different sata plug on the motherboard, and nothing happens.

when i start the machine i can hear that there's a couple clicks in the harddrive,so obviously its still running, but after that its all silence and there's no activity at all thereafter.

does this indicate a dead harddrive that can only be replaced?is there any chance i can recover the data on the harddrive?

thx tons for any reply!!!

Answer:seagate harddrive problem

This happened like a day ago for me with the same drive. I fixed it by resetting the cmos, it was either that or the cable was loose (because i took it out and put it back in) so check the cables, if that does not do it, try a cmos flash.

EDIT: wait, the cmos flash fixed my 1tb drive, not the 7200.11, my bad.

Could a USB port be damaged when trying to attach the cable from a 1.5 T external harddrive. this harddrive was attached before I got this computer a few days ago.

Answer:Seagate external harddrive 1.5 T

Can't see why it would be?Which having said... if the drive demands more power than the pc - particularly a laptop - can deliver then possibly; but have never come across it.If the drive requires serious power i/p then use an external usb-power adapter to power it?Have you experienced this and this is why you're posting here now?

I have a problem with my Seagate external harddrive. It won't let my computer start. It stops at the BIOS screen and does nothing. I tried pressing the BIOS setup or System recovery but it doesn't work. I found out that my external harddrive was the problem after serveral tries. I took the plug out of my computer and restarted it. It worked fine. I plugged it back in again to the computer and it was detected in Device Manager but not detected on Windows. In Device Manager it said there was no problem at all. However when I clicked computer the external harddrive didn't show up. I also have to mention that I dropped my harddrive accidentally. It keeps making a beeping noise every other second. It was a regular beep, nothing out of the ordinary. I also tried diagnosticing my drive. However that was a problem too. It made another error. I also tried to plug the external harddrive to another computer and it also made the beeping noise and it didn't show up on the otehr computer. I'm starting to think that this is an external error with the parts inside than internal with software and other stuff. I don't think that I like recovering my data with experts because it costs a lot of cash. The ohter option is to replace my drive with another one from seagate. The warranty is still on and won't expire in a while.

Problem
- My 500GB Seagate external harddrive can't be recognized in the computer (as if it wasn't there) when plugged via USB
- It makes a repeated beep when connected to a plug
- I called technical support and they charge $300 for data recovery

Question
- If my external harddrive has failed, then what are some methods would Seagate use to recover the data?
- Can't I just open the casing and remove the SATA drive and plug it in with my SATA adapter (i know it voids warranty, but I'd rather have my data back at a cheaper price than to get a replacement harddrive)
- Isn't it possible that the casing might've broke, not the hard drive itself?
- What are your thoughts on this one?

You may wish to look into Data Recovery or to return the drive to us for an exchange

If you have any additional questions, please let me know.

What does that mean?

Answer:Seagate External harddrive failed, back for $300?

There is the possibility that it could be the encloser that has died.
The only way find out is to purchase another enclosure. However you will void any change at warranty if you pop open seagate's enclosure.

Hi, and thanks in advance to any help. Today I noticed that my Seagate 250gb harddrive is not showing up under my computer as a disk. This happened after a reboot. It is the only usb device plugged into my computer and my taskbar recognizes it with the safely remove hardware icon. Under. It also shows up in disk management as unallocated with no partition. It has been fussy before but has worked fine for awhile now. Is there anything I can do or have I lost all of my data? Also it was pretty full with just 5% freespace on it before this happened. I know I probably should have backed up this data but now I am nervous because I have important stuff on there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So I have a seagate External drive which had been working perfectly fine for me right upto yesterday.
My kids were watching a film via the drive connected to my ps4 and all worked well but when I went to connect it to my netbook to manage some files it was no longer visible.
I've done extensive google searches but not come across anything that would seem to fix my problem.
The drive is visible in drive management but not in disk management. I have tried or in all the uso ports but that makes no difference.
The drive now no longer shows up when I plug it into the ps4 which leafs me to suspect that it's had it and I've lost whatever was on it.
One other thing to note is that when I connect it to my netbook it makes a noise like the drive inside is spinning to try and come to life.
Having said this however it had just decided to show up on my netbook so I am copying the files off of it right now to make sure they're not lost. I'm going to say however that this is going to need replacing right?

As the title says, my new Seagate Expansion Portable Drive is not working in the 3.0 slots in the front of my computer. It only works when i plug it into one of my two 2.0 slots on the back of my computer, which are both occupied by my mouse and keyboard, both of them are not backwards compatible. Answer:seagate external harddrive doesnt spin up

not enough power (try with laptop plugged into mains - not on battery power)
faulty cable
faulty usb port

I have Windows 7 Home premium 64bit as I recently got a new computer, and to my surprise my seagate external Harddisk did not work. If I go to the Devices section, it is listed as Desktop. I have tried many things such as, rebooting, trying different USB, Assigning A letter to the Expansion and a few others as you will see in my screenshots. Just before I forget my old PC 32bit Windows 7 Ultimate, automatically detected my 500gb Seagate 500gb External Harddisk so I cannot see a problem with the Harddrive or with my computer as it is brand new and fully functioning. Below are my screenshots.

SATA or PATA????

Have you tried to remove it from the ext case and installed it into the computer...to check if any of the electronics in the external case failed.
could be something with the usb drivers in the new machine... might try unstalling from the device manager the usb controllers, maybe the composite device then turn the machine off and let windows reinstall 'em again and see if the drive is picked up.
At this point I'd be asking just how important is the data on this HD... I'd even go so far as see if I could put the HD into a friends machine,(or old 'puter), to see if it could be picked up???? Be sure and copy the data off the HD while you continue to trouble shoot the drive.
From experience..... the only drive I've not been able to finally detect ended up as a dead drive, "bfh"
luk to you.....

Anyone use the Seagate Replica software that comes with the 2T External Hardrive? This is the GoFlex Desk series of external harddrives.

The software does an automatic backup of all your computers harddrives and logical drives and backs up any changes periodically to the external hardrive. It is suppose to allow full recovery (it includes a boot disk, linux based for restoring from the backed up 'image').

Anyone use it, and does it successfully restore the 'image' in case of a full crash?

Answer:Seagate Replica (2T External Harddrive) GoFlex Desk

Why bother using third-party disk-imaging (especially from Seagate) when Windows 7 has it built-in?

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and post that It was working fine without any issues. I have two external drive connected to it.

1. 1 TB Iomega powered drive. - now RAW
2. 2TB seagate external drive.

The 1tb drive suddenly became RAW and I wasn't able to access it. before it happened, I had removed some virus detected in the drive by the AVG antivirus. Post that once or twice it got disconnected and after that the drive became RAW. I understand the file system might have got corrupted since couple of times my system faced powercuts and before I could shut it down the system cut off from electricity as my UPS died on me.

I haven't formatted the disk at all, as I have all my important data in this HD as it was my backup drive for office and personal use.

Disk Management: shows the drive is RAW but a healthy Partition.

I opened the hard drive casing, tried connecting the drive directly to the internal sata cable but the same didn't read even then and still shows as RAW drive. I got a Storite USB to SATA adapter and tried that, the drive is now running fine(as it sounds) with intermittent kind of noise (clicking etc.,) for sometime and then disappears. After directly connecting the drive atleast the below softwares are able to read the data in the drive but unable to recover it.

I have tried recovering data using the below softwares.

1. EaseUS DAta recovery - took too much time to complete reading - 17% in more than 24 hours- stopped it.
2. M3 DAta recover... Read more

My recommendation is to use [email protected] Recovery Pro. I had a similar situation (raw indication) on a drive a few months back and I tried several of the leading data recovery apps, and the one I recommended is the one that found the most stuff -- nearly everything. It took nearly a whole day to do an in-depth scan, but in the end, it was worth it. It's free to install and try out, but you need to buy a license to do any serious recovery work.

My Dell Vostro 1400 Laptop recently quit working. Its only 4 months old.
I turned it on and it came to a screen saying,

"Windows dould not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
"\windows\system32\config\system"
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

I inserted the setup disc and booted from it, when I got the the Repair option it says,"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue."

So I took the computer down to the local computer store and they put in a new 130 GB harddrive, ran the setup disk again and it displayed the same missing HDD message.

Anyone have any Ideas of what could be wrong???
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Windows Setup Disk cannot find Harddrive, even with a brand new harddrive installed.

I have just purchased the Lenovo IdeaCentre 510 Tower PC [i7]. It came with Windows 10 Home OS. Within the set up, it asked me whether I wanted to install updates to Windows 10 - i said 'yes'. It took a good couple of hours to complete the whole set up of the desktop, but according to the log, all Windows updates appear to have been successfully installed. (I mention this because I later found something on Lenovo's website about updating to Windows 10 when setting up your Lenovo for the first time - it mentioned trouble which may include the damaging or disabling of hardware? I can't seem to find this again, or else i would post a link. I think this may have been referring to upgrades to earlier windows versions rather than upgrades for Windows 10 applied to a machine which is sold with Windows 10 already installed.) My desktop seems to be up and running but I have just attempted to connect my Seagate Backup Plus portable drive using the USB port and it will not recognise it (I tried this on several ports).  I can feel the Seagate working but it does not show up under My Computer or anywhere else I can see.  I have tested the USB port by inserting a regular USB pen drive and it DOES recognise this. The Seagate previously worked on my Windows Surface Pro 3 with no trouble and I have all of my files backed up on it.  Hope somebody can help me figure out what is going wrong...  Many thanks!

If the disk is really damaged, this may be a tough task. But you can try to recover the data with an live Linux CD or my universal data recovery stick. Linux is not as picky as Windows and maybe it would work.

I have a customer's computer here that has two hard disks, a 10GB and a 40GB. The 10GB is the boot drive and has been set up with Ontrack Disk Manager (part of Seagate Disk Wizard, both drives are Seagate drives), the 40GB is regular NTFS. The machine originally ran WinME but has been upgraded to XP. The problem is that Disk Manager comes up with an error on startup saying it can't find the operating system. I can't get into the 10GB drive to find out what's happened, it doesn't show up as a readable partition when I boot off a floppy or plug the drive into another machine. Partition Magic 8 reads it as a "Disk Manager" partition. When I boot off the XP setup CD it doesn't see any partitions on the drive. The most I've been able to do is run EasyRecovery over the drive using the RAW partition type (i.e. it doesn't find any files as FAT32 or NTFS), which allows me to extract all the files, but without the filenames or directories. Spinrite seemed to find a bad sector when I did a level 2 recovery, Seatools found no errors on the drive.

Does anyone know how you can copy files off a drive that has been set up with Ontrack Disk Manager? I installed ODM on a workshop computer but it doesn't seem to have any feature that lets me convert the drive to a regular partition format, or extract files from it.

Hi all,

I am new to this forum. I suddenly faced a typical problem. 2 days back, when my computer was running very well with windows 7 ultimate x86, suddenly my brother's little son kicked the CPU while playing, and my machine stopped working. I will give the details scenario from then as much as possible. Before that here are my system specs:
Core 2 quad q8300 2.5 GHZ - Asus P5QPL-AM Mobo - Xeon 2X2GB 800 MHz RAM - Nvidea GeForce 9400 GT GPU - Sony DVDRW - Samsung SyncMaster 594 MG SVGA - Foxin 500 Watt PSU

After that kick to my CPU, it stopped working. I thought, maybe there is a loose connection. So I opened the Cabinet and replugged every cable and started the PC again. To my surprise, it did not boot up. It hung at the windows start up logo screen for almost 20 minutes. I restarted again, same thing happened. So I thought it may happen that due to jerk my OS was corrupted. I thought of reinstalling the OS. As I did not have the installation media, I thought of doing the same next day. Meanwhile I called one of my friends who had that installation media and he said next day it was his work off, so he will come to my home and install it for me. I went to office next day. When I returned, I saw that my friend has done a great mistake. He tried to repaid windows 7 and somehow it did not work (I don't know why because I was not present at that time). So he decided a fresh install of windows xp and later upgrading to windows 7 (I don't know why he thought of that as windo... Read more

Windows 10

I have two 3 TB Seagate HDDs that are a mirrored pair on a Marvell Raid Card.  Each HDD is 3 TB.
I use this as a back up drive.  The drive is partitioned into 3 parts.  I believe I used MBR formatting but it may have been GUID.  It has been working as I have backed up around 2 TB already wit no problem. The drive is now invalid.
It shows up under the Marvell boot software with no errors.

The only thing I know that could have affected this HDD is that I unplugged an external hard drive from the 3.0 USB.  the screen was not on so I did not see anything.  The other thing was that the computer was rebooted by someone else, and it may
have been a hard boot, before I noticed the problem.

If I am looking at the correct HDD with the program HxD (i am not sure how to distinguish one hard drive from another on the program), the side column in the hexadecimal listing has a note on line 160 that says "Invalid partition table.Error loading
operating system.Missing operating system.."  This does not seem like an error that should appear on a hard drive that is not the boot drive so I am not sure if I am looking at the correct drives.

What can I do?

Hey  My laptop recently died on me the Graphics Card inside it has broken and it has to be sent for repair so that is some good news for me today however the repair guy says that all the data will have to be erased from the computer but i ain't being ripped off to pay a fortune to recover my hard drive when i could do it myself so this is my question? How could i recover am laptop hard drive with a broken graphics card? I know some programs can let you see what files you want but the Grpahics Card has broken so that idea is out the window, I was wondering if i could just plug my portable USB  hard drive in to the computer via USB and it would just start grabbing the data off the computer?Or would i have to go around this a different way optionally i would like it if i could just plug the portable HDD in the computer and then it will copy all the files without any hassle? Thanks for your time!

I defraged my Windows ME partition, and all ok until I tried to load Mandrake Linux, which had be corrupted by the defrag. I then attempted to re install Linux, but it took the whole drive (39G). so I did not have Windows. After a great deal of trouble attempting to reformat drive using Fdisk, I resorted again to the recover CD, which announced that the Media in drive C was not recognised. But in frustration I pressed escape and return a number of time and the drive was re formatted, but only approx 29G. I have now a working Windows system but not enough room on the partition to fully load Linux. Hi,
if this is posted in the wrong forum, then please move it to the right place...

My problem is that I ran the recovery CDs (for XP) on my harddrive, believing that I had all data securely backed up. Big mistake. It turns out that I cannot read/find the files (pics) on the DVD (my backup). Some files and folders have been copied onto the DVD correctly, but other files appear to be missing and in many cases entire folders are labelled "Folder is Empty" when trying to open them. On one of my DVDs containing the backup, the info provided in "my computer" says that it contains 4.22GB data, but when going onto the DVD itself and adding together all the files and folders, then it adds up to no more than 3GB. It clearly seems like data has been copied, but somehow I cannot see it (same result on 2 different computers).

What could be the problem? Is there an easy way to recover my files on the DVD?

If not, how much of a chance would I have when it comes to recover the files from the harddrive on which I have run the recovery CDs? After running the recovery CDs, nothing has been written or deleted onto the harddrive. The harddrive is 80GB and the pic files I'd like to recover are no more than 1-2GB in total, so there should be a good chance that the new Windows+applications is not going to sit on top of my files.

Apart from an estimate on how much of my files on the harddrive I can hope to recover, can I expect my recovered files be complete, i.e not p... Read more

Hi guys and gals.  A friend asked me to retrieve some pictures from his Dell computer which won't boot. I thought I could slave the harddrive to my pc and save the pictures but the Western Digital connection is not the same as what's on my pc. Is there an adapter available for this type of harddrive? When I boot the computer I get a black screen saying that there is a hardware or software problem and recommends I do a "Launch Setup Repair". I hit enter and it just comes back to the same message. I can choose "start Windows Normally" but it just goes to a black screen. I ran a diagnostic on the harddrive and it passed. I also ran a Memtest86 on the RAM which also passed the test. I have a Recovery Disk but I'm more concerned with saving the pictures first. Any ideas?

Alright well first let me direct you to my previous cry for help:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f100...se-452422.html

I originally thought I had some sort of virus, but it turns out my disk is failing...

I need some help on how to recover everything.

Here is what I have.

C: (Failing drive) with Vista Home Premium
D: 1TB storage Hard Drive with some games on it (Steam)
E: Old Harddrive I pulled from an old pc, with windows xp on it except it won't run without a BSOD unless in safemode

I don't have a vista installation disk or anything, but I do have the OS Key.

Should I move over my important files to my D: and then install vista on there to make it my new C:? or should I format my failing drive and reinstall vista? I'm not sure if it will just fail again or not. Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you very much for any help

Hi guys,
well heres the story: My sister brought me a computer to fix for her friend who owns a restaurant. So all i did was an easy fix formatted the hard drive and installed windows. Well i brought it back to the owner and she is very sad that i have deleted all the files on the computer. If i knew she wanted to recover the data i would have installed the hard drive into my computer and backed it up for her but i didn't know.
Heres the problem: She had a lot of records stored on the computer she needs and I was wondering if there was a way to restore some of her data that i formatted? I am willing to buy the software because i am getting more ppl who ask me to fix their computer. I know that since i installed windows on it, that it is impossible to recover all the formatted data but I think if i just get some she will be happy. I thank you for any help. Thank you.

My cousin's laptop recently went to crap. The windows system startup folder got corrupted. Anyway, I pulled the harddrive and plugged it into my desktop to pull off her personal files (System restore/repair with CD did Not work)
Anyway, I got it to show up fine on my machine, but every single folder, subfolder, and file requires me to go through the arduous process of about 7-10 clicks to 'acquire the security permissions'
Since there are a good 4-600 photos alone, and numerous folders and subfolders, this obviously is not a very efficient method.
After poking around some, it seems like running the takeown commands through the disk would solve this issue...am I correct in assuming that or do I need to run down a different avenue?

My old laptop's motherboard died, probably as a result of overheating.  The harddrive is RAID 0; two drives stacked on top of each other.  I've had some friends look at it, and they recommended a 2.5" PATA/IDE enclosure kit.  I found this one at tigerdirect - Sabrent 2.5" USB 2.0 to IDE/PATA Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure.  Will I still be able to recover the data one drive at a time, even though it is RAID 0?  I also looked into IDE cable adaptors, but again, the IDE cable adaptors I've found only connect to one harddrive at a time.  Thank your for any help you can give me.

Hi

I need to help someone recover data from a dead scusi harddrive,

I have not yet inspected the device but I am told the computer makes a beep when it starts then fails to read the disk and wont load the operating system.

I was under the impression that a single beep indicated it had found your harddrive, but I maybe wrong.

It also has a scusi card so could it be possible that the card has failed?

I have the ultimate boot CD so I will possibly be able to do some scans on it with this, but is it possible to recover the data myself without sending it off and paying a small fortune?

If so then how do I go about doing this do I need to connect another harddrive to it to transfer the data?

and what software will I need???

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

HFS can detect the recovery, but not the main disk of 222.22 GB of storage that's just locked away there, unable to be labeled or opened for as far as I can tell. What do I do to read this Hard drive? It's not an external one either, it's straight from a mac laptop.

Hi,

I recently broke my laptop and as it was fairly old decided to upgrade instead of trying to fix it, however I want to get the data from my old laptop to upload onot my new one.

I have a external enclosure for a laptop harddrive that I can slave off but my issue is that the drive from my old laptop is partitioned (C:\ & D:\). My new laptop's system drive is C:\ so when I plug in the harddrive it detects but does not come up as a drive. I've tried to change the drive letter of the C:\ drive but as it's the system drive it won't let me, anyone know what I can do?

Any suggestions would be most welcome, I have 3 years worth of emails on my old harddrive which I really don't want to lose.

Thanks,

Dillonmr

Answer:Broken laptop - recover harddrive data

Not sure why the partitions aren't showing up, but I can tell you there is absolutely no point in changing the drive letter as it wouldn't help you access the external drive and could really screw up your current system. What operating sytem were you running on the old drive? If the partitions are formatted as NTFS, they could be refusing to mount due to an "unclean shutdown".

I'm in desperate need to recover things from my corrupted D drive. When I click on it, it says D:\ is not accessible. The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable. When I restart it always does chkdsk for that drive, but it can't repair the corrupt master file table, and it's the same result where the drive is unreadable. I used the Getdata recover my files software to recover the drive. It didn't find the things I desperately need, and I noticed a bunch of files it recovered is now corrupt.

The most important thing I need to recover is a windows movie maker project that I've spent hours upon hours upon hours on for a music video. I so desperately need that .mswmm file. This software found just about all of my windows movie maker projects except that one, just my luck.

The second most important thing I need is my Adobe Audition session files along with the wav's for the sessions. I have a new computer I should be getting today, and my friend will be over in 2 days. I need to figure something out quickly cause he will need to format the drive which will make it lose everything. He is pretty sure that the drive will be unreadable on his laptop which he's bringing over.

It recovered 2 936gb files and a 465 gb file with no file extensions that were labeled $BadClus~$Bad_1 $BadClus~$Bad_3 & $BadClus~$Bad_4 Is there anything I can do to open these files to try to retrieve anything from it?

Answer:Need to recover files from a corrupt unreadable NTFS harddrive

Actually the programs to recover deleted and corrupted files from a drive are not very professional inspite of what they claim. In my experience they hardly ever do a good and professional job.

Only a real professional can make a good and acceptable recovery of corrupted files from a corrupted drive. These professionals charge the earth for it. For Home Users it is hardly ever worth it. But that is my opinion. May be there are others who can give good guidance on this subject so that you are able to recover your data.

I wish you Good Luck

Hello,

I have a major problem. Because my laptop was having problems involving the 'blue screen of death', I chose to backup my files to an external portable harddrive before reformatting the entire drive.

However, when opening the backup folder, I discovered that my art folder, located in the 'PUBLIC PICTURES' folder was not to be found.

What is the BEST method to recover the files from the 'PUBLIC PICTURES' folder? I had almost 5GIGS worth of pictures.

I KNOW there is a way to recover the files, but not sure if they will even be located in the Public Pictures folder. Is it possible that after reformatting, Windows 7 relocated the contents of the 'Public Pictures' folder to another place on the drive?

Is it possible to restore the folder to previous versions AFTER reformatting the drive?

Can someone PLEASE help me?? This is seven years worth of photos I saved that I'm desperately trying to recover.

THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH for your patience and assistance.

Answer:HELP!!! RECOVER Public Pictures Folder AFTER reformatting harddrive!!!

Can someone please help me? I'd really need to recovery these files WITH the exact file names associated to them.

Does anyone know of a free method to recover them from the 'PUBLIC PICTURES' folder AFTER reformatting the harddrive?

Would appreciate any help!!

Hello Members!I have a Windows 8 OS backup on a Pen-drive & mine is a branded PC from HP~ AIO make.Is it possible to format the entire Hard-drive to reclaim the Space used by Recovery Image desk (D:)? Can someone please help guide me on how to format an entire Hard-drive (both C: & D:) in context to an HP Desktop environment?Help will be sincerely appreciated.Thank you.

Answer:Is it possible to recover the Hard-disk space utilised by Recovery Disk(D:)?

Yes. But not-recommended.The recovery partition  is the only way you have to repair your system in the event of a failure. The computer makers now want you to use that recover if ever a major failure makes your computer unusable. If you need more storage for your photos and videos, consider these methods:A. Use DVD discs to store photos and videos.B. Use a cloud service to save your most important information. C. Purchase in economic external hard drive for extra storage. It would be a b ad idea to format our hard drive unless there was something urgent.

Hi, I am trying to back up to my 1TB seagate drive and it gets to 27% done and then I get an error message saying " The operation failed due to a device error encountered with either the source or the destination. If the source or destination volume is on a disk, run CHKDSK/R on the source or destination volume and then retry the operation.Details : The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."What does all that mean?! Can anyone help pleaseThanks

Answer:Can't back up to disk (1TB seagate)

If the source or destination volume is on a disk, run CHKDSK/R on the source or destination volume and then retry the operation.Errors on either internal or external drive you need to run disk checking tool on both.CAn also come up if there is insufficent room on the internal disk to make temporay files for the backup. you need about 20% disk space to be free on the internal drive.

Answer:Seagate Disk Wizard

It should work fine with SATA drives - just make sure you've got the latest version, in case earlier versions have issues with some controllers.

I have a seagate 400Gb hard disk model ST3400832ACE. My problem is, my PC won't see it. It's been in my machine for ages. I was having problems with it loosing the boot sector so I did a backup and used my machine recovery cd to reformat it and re-load XP. All that worked fine, then I took the hard disk out and put it in my other pc as the secondary disk to copy the data files back on, but my other machine sees it as a 136Gb drive. When I put it back in the main machine (remembering to put the jumper back so its the master disk), the machine will no longer see it. When I go into setup it thinks it has no hard disk. I've tried to change it to manual setup but there is no information on the disk label as to cylinders, sectors and heads. I've looked on the Seagate web site and contacted their help desk but they don't have the information. Does anyone know what the settings are or any other way I can get my pc to see the disk.

Answer:Seagate disk problems

Sounds like the drive may be corrupted or even on way out. The only reason I can think of the other pc could not see more than 136 gb might be it is missing service pack 1 for XP or the bios needs an flash or update to address 48 LBA. You have a better chance on the second box because at least it sees the drive.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 2435-S255. My cd-ROM has stopped working since I tried copying one of my children's games. I thought I would make a spare for my kids to both be able to play. I tried everything to get it to work again. I even called the company that made the game and told them what I did. They said it was not their software, that they have no copy right protection that would do that. Since then I have made a mess of my computer. I have restored it a million times in the system restore program. It is playing DVD's but no data cd's will play and it does not register any blank cd's. I went out and bought a Memorex external USB disk drive and recorder. I just want to recover my computer to factory settings using the recovery disks I have. The TEAC disk drive in the Toshiba wont read the recovery disks at all and the external drive reads the disk but when it reboots it looks for the disk in the internal and wont registers the USB drive automatically. I'm hoping their is a way to bypass the reboot and just start the recovery or any other solution. I even reassigned the drive letter and have since put it back to original.

Answer:My disk drive won't read my recover disk or any other data. HELP

Check and see if Toshiba has the restore info on a hidden partition and how to proceed using it...most laptop manuf. set them up this way.

I'm using Hp Compaq DC7800 desktop core 2 duo with 2GB of ram.Now I'm planning to upgrade from 320GB to 1tb hard disk (Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5).- Would it run smoothly on system?- Is this a good choice or 512 GB?- This one or another model of hard disk of some other company?

Answer:Would the Seagate 1 TB hard disk run smoothly on my pc?

Hi: A 1 TB drive will work fine because I put one in my HP dc7800. There is one problem though...This document explains it. http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?sp4ts.oid=3718645&docId=emr_na-c02711513-3 Now, the fact that you are getting a Seagate drive, that may be OK, but I can't guarantee it. I originally planned to install a Western Digital SATA III drive in my dc7800, but it displayed the symptoms in the above document (not detected on start up most of the time). Naturally, I assumed the drive was defective, so I returned it, and the replacement drive did the same thing. Then I came across the above document. I have a HP 8200 Elite (which is a descendant of the dc7800) and it came with a Seagate 1 TB HDD, SATA III (6.0 GBPS). So, I put the Seagate drive in my dc7800 several years ago, and it has worked fine ever since.  I put the 500 GB WD HDD in the 8200 Elite and it works just fine in that model, because it has a sata III controller. So, that may be the only issue you come across.  It is a major issue of course, if the drive doesn't work.

I note that your entire original post has been written poorly this way; and as we are not presently SMSing on a mobile phone! It would be far better (for you) to write clearly, if you need clear support.
ie I could just as easily write back: "Get S.Tools 'n chk; o ty Im dve 2 comp bck, u no."
Well, no doubt any support member can eventually work out what I mean (possibly even you) but I look at posts like these, and I think, why bother! You don't have the time to write correctly, and I don't have the time to reply (except to help you to post correctly, it would seem)

By the way, bumping your thread only after 5hrs is not correct to the board's guidelines. Try to be more patient. Or better yet re-write (via using Edit) your post.
Edit:

b wen u do i hlp u on hd prob. k?

In Win7 RTM I have had trouble with one of my two HDs, a Seagate 300 GB. During Win7 installation, installer "could not find drivers" when the Seagate was the first SATA drive. Once the Western Digital drive was set as the first drive, system installed ok. After installation, the Seagate shows in the Disk Management as 300 GB, but if look at contents with Explorer, it has only 125 GB capacity. Can this be a Seagate firmware problem? (Win7 RC earlier had no problems with this drive when the system had Win7RC + Vista + XP.)

the story so far, now at the wits end... i installed, a while ago, a slave drive, and decided to transfer the whole OS over to use as a spare..early today i decided to use it as the main drive, so i downloaded disk wizard, because i want to transfer the lot over from the main drive to the slave, then i would change the jumpers over, and make it the master "with me so far?" it starts to go, gets as far as "format" then i get the error message up "fault in DWwin" which then goes into a loop which i can not get out of, only by pulling the plug out :-(( first..could it be, because it already has a OS on it?second: is there another way i can do it? but bear in mind i must keep all what is on the main drive, and transfer it over...thanks for any help.Ron

I have 500 gb 7200.12 seagate HDD which was suddenly disappeared while navigating, since then it is not detecting by BIOS (and after that it was shown while I am trying update its firm ware!!)please hlep me I stored full 500gb data in it its about 10years collection!

Answer:Seagate hard disk not detecting in BIOS

No idea what is going on, safest way is to slave your HD to another HD/comp ( no need to bolt it in, just cable it & leave it outside the case ) & copy your stuff ( don't forget your emails & address book ) onto the other HD or other media. You may have a choice of jumper settings on the master HD, such as master with slave or ms.

I want to upgrade hard disk to seagate SSHD, it is cheaper than SSD. Customer care told me to visit iQOR service but they don't have SSHD. Am I able to upgrade it or not?

Answer:I want to upgrade hard disk to Seagate SSHD

Hi,You can upgrade to the Seagate Firecuda SSHD. If you do it by yourself you will void the warranty if you still have one on PC. It will increase the evryday performance of the PC. Here you can see in the service manual how it is done. page 32http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05228250 You will need to reinstall Windows 10 on the PC after change of Hard drive. There are a few ways how to do this.-Download media creation tool from Microsoft and create a bootable USB drive with Windows 10. It will be automatically activated once installed.-Migrate an image to new Hard drive before replacing.-Creating HP recovery media USB drive and reinstalling once changed hard drive. Let me know if you need further help,David

I have a 750 gig IDE internal Seagate HD. When I move files to the recycle bin and empty the bin with say 15 gigs of data, the 15 gigs gets deleted, but it does not add those gigs of free space back to the total availavle on the hard drive. I had 200 gigs of free space, and over the past few weeks it is down to 107 gigs, and I've deleted at least 100 gigs off the PC. I called Seagate and they had no idea what could be wrong. I ran their diagnostics tool on the drive and it comes back with nothing wrong on the HD.If you have any suggestions to fix this problem, please let me knowThank you!!

Answer:Seagate HDD Disk Space & Recycle Bin problems

I suppose they could have got jammed in the bin. If you delete the file "Recyled" and then reboot it should create a new empty bin. You will have to temporarily show Protected Operating System Files in order to see the Recycled file. Hide protected files again when finished, as they can clutter up working areas. If Recycled won't delete (even in Safe Mode) then either use a Linux Live CD or some free program such as "Move On Boot".Long Range Golfer

After searching the entirety of the internet I have come here to try to resolve my problem. I have a Seagate barracuda 1.5tb 3.5" 7200rpm hard drive which i was previously using to run windows server 2008. I am now trying to use it as an external hard drive for my laptop, however the laptop does not seem to recognize it. I tried using two different cases, three different usb ports, and i confirmed that everything was properly plugged in and powered on. The hard drive does not appear in disk manager, my computer, or the BIOS. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Seagate HDD doesnt show up in disk managment

Hi smknowles,

Welcome to SevenForums.

More details about how the HDD was performing in the Windows Server 2008 would be helpful.

Particularly, the reason why you removed it.

After which a message is shown in the taskbar saying "A problem occured during hardware installation". The hard disk did not come with any cd, also I have learnt that external hard disks doesnt require any type of software. The hard disk is not shown either in Mycomputer or device manager.I see the light blinking on the external hard disk but I dont feel any spinning of disks when I place my hand on the external hard disk.
So anyone here please suggest me what to do?

I have got two Seagate Hard drives. Both are 80GB Baracoda (ATA 7200RPM) and both are installed on IDE0

Disk 1 As Master (with 3 partitions FAT32, FAT32 and NTFS of equal sizes)
Disk 1 got main Windows XP Installtion of NTFS partition and also Windows 98 for emergency sitiuations (Or to play old time GAMES )

Disk 2 As Slave (with single NTFS partition) containing my billion dollor worth data

I just discovered on my hard-disk starts beeping (i guess the disk 1 with 3 partitions) It has happened in past with a 40GB disk for which i replaced the new one.

When i tried to shut down Windows XP was unable to do so! I keep the power button press to shut it down.

When i restarted It was Boot Failure! and the salve disk was not found by BIOS (Drive 2) I removed its power cable and re boot. Windows XP botted without any Beeping.

I checked online disk tests from seagate website all give OKAY!

Then I again powered (Drive 2: Slave one) this time not Beebs but XP Scan disks scanned the drive and report transfering Bad clusters in the log file.

This sounds alarming!!! This disk is very important for me. Does any one know this Beebing alerts ???...I heard they are Disk Death Clicks

Any one having idea about known issues with Two Same Spec. HDrives Master and Slave?

Please do post

Answer:Seagate 80GB Hard Disk Beeping

That usually means it's about to 'splode.

If you can, backup all the data quickly and expect it to die.

Though, is it an actual beep, or a click? Hard drives can't really beep, they can click, but not beep.

However there is a small speaker on your motherboard that can beep, it could be that.

I have a Seagate original HDD of 320GB where I had some really important documents and pictures (of course, everyone's data is important, needless to be mentioned). A couple of months ago, it suddenly stopped being recognized on all computers. I took it to the service guy near my house, who said there is a clicking sound but that it is not being detected. I was referred to a data recovery agency who said it was 'physical damage' and some 70% can be recovered, and that I gotta pay to the tune of $800. I live in India, and no one charges so much for these services. I smelled a rat, and also sensed I would be bankrupt for months. So took my Seagate external HDD back. The HDD was opened by them and then given to me. Like a fool I told them it was ok to be opened and checked. I have no idea what they did with it. I decided not to approach any 'data recovery agencies' that are advertised cos I have become really suspicious of them. Now I really want my data back. My problems are these:

If there is a physical damage (as claimed by those agents) what are the chances of getting the data back?
What can I possibly do myself at home in order to get the data? I am willing to spend money to the tune of $100, if need be for a good software.
Assuming there really was a physical damage and the robbers weren't lying about the actual problem, it still means the data could be recovered, cos they swore they would give me 70% of it. That means, there must be dat... Read more

If the drive is making a clicking sound it is a likely sign the read/write needle is either stuck or not moving properly (similar to a defective tone arm on an old-style record player).

If a professional data recovery service goes to work on it, it is possible they can salvage data from the sectors that haven't been damaged or gouged by the read-write needle failing (again, think of an old vinyl LP that skips - these are the areas where data recovery is unlikely).

The big question is which 70% of the data can be salvaged. Since there is no way of telling if the 20GB file you need most is in a recoverable part of the drive, it's unfortunately a crap shoot.

Dear Support,

I tried most of the forums, but didnt find a solution for this one. I have a Seagate external hard disk just 3 months old!!!

I have a hp laptop and was connecting to it using 3.0 USB port. I was getting the error

"PLEASE FORMAT THE DISK BEFORE YOU CAN USE IT" error.

I had quite lot of data in it, BUT, i did not mind about the data here, AS the hardware is more important for me, as its just 3 months old. So i just tried to format the disk. I also tried CHKDKS f:/R/X option and it completed successfully with out error which took almost 2 days completely. BUT formatting has become a problem as explained below.

Everytime i try to format the drive, say it starts formatting and it reaches some 16-20 % the drive disconnects itself as i hear a disconnection sound, and after that it connects itself again, as i hear sort of power on sound. Immediately i get an error from the format telling me that the drive is disconnected and the format cannot continue.

Also i again get back the PLEASE FORMAT THE DISK BEFORE YOU CAN USE IT"

PLEASE GUYS I WOULD REALLY BE GRATEFUL IF ANYONE OF YOU CAN assist me in guiding me, as to what would be the problem.

I have already tried uninstalling the USB HOST drivers from the HP website(as i have a hp system installed.)
The drive is not even detected currently in USB 2.0. Not sure what is the reason. I just want to save my hard disk, as i paid a lot for it and its just 3 months onl
