BitLocker Drive Encryption failed to recover from an abruptly terminated conversion. This could be due to either all conversion logs being corrupted or the media being write-protected.

Question: BitLocker Drive Encryption failed to recover from an abruptly terminated conversion. This could be due to either all conversion logs being corrupted or the media being write-protected.

At first, I don't need to recover my data, I just want my drive back to re-use it.
How can a format my usb drive including all boot sectors which sees to be locked/write-protected by bitlocker?

My problem starts with decrypting my drive by deactivting bitlocker on it by entering the valid password/recovery key. At 36% of decryption the process halts without reason. Now, I'm unable to access my drive or resume the process.

I tried...
...to format with windows
..remove with diskmgmt
... remove with diskpart
... repair-bde
... manage-bde
... ubuntu live cd
... mass production tool software, to override the whole stick

nothing worked. The only thing which worked was once the software M3 Bitlocker recovery Free, but just one time to access the locked partition. But, as mentioned I don't need to recover my data. With that tool I'm not able to wipe the drive.

That Bitlocker protects my data till the end is good, but that it breaks my data and my hardware in such a case is not fair.
How can I break the write-protection mode to finally wipe the hard drive?

Preferred Solution: BitLocker Drive Encryption failed to recover from an abruptly terminated conversion. This could be due to either all conversion logs being corrupted or the media being write-protected.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Into another troule.
I wanted to encrypt my Western Digital Portable 500 GB HDD so my data would be safe.
I turned on the Bitlocker for this hard disk and set the password.
After that it started Encrypting..

I knew that it will take a long time so i went to university for lecture.
When i came back the encryption dialouge was stuck at 12.4 %.
[Snap Attached]

I kept waiting for some time but it wasn't working i pulled out the cable and inserted again...

I inserted the key and it unlocked with autorun dialogue and Encrypting Dialogue. [Snap Attached]

Clicking on *Continue without Scanning* brings the my computer windows and it starts searching but doesn't open the harddisk.

All this happens everytime i plug back, i have lost access to my all data thats stored on that harddisk... In my system there iz only 80GB Sata Hard containing OS.

I have tried one thing.
chkdsk /r it worked for a while but on 4th stage it stopped.

Please Can you Guys help me ? i want it to complete the encryption or decrypt whatever it has encrypted or damaged :(

Please Help ME :'(

Hi guys. Can anyone point me to where I can find a method to convert from a C++ CTime object to a SQL DATETIME field and back in C++ ado.net managed code? I've dredged everywhere for almost a full day and can find nothing on it.

Unfortunately the help offered for many areas of C++ by M$ is becoming painfully thin and new processes to me seem to be becoming harder to find out about.

Thanks.

Answer:Solved: Conversion between C++ CTime to SQL DATETIME conversion

It's ok now, I solved it myself. It turned out to be remarkably easy (once you know). CString is recognised intrinsically.

CString myString;
...
System::String^ strS = gcnew System::String(myString);

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a 1.5 GHz Pentium M processor, 2 GB RAM and Windows XP/Pro SP 2, InDesign CS3 (v. 5.0.1), and Word 2002 SP 3.

Problem description:

a) I have tried converting InDesign documents and Word documents with long hyperlinks to PDF. I have documents with some hyperlinks that are very long and require more than one line. The hyperlinks that I create in InDesign or Word that require more than one line look OK after conversion to PDF (using the Export command in InDesign), but, if I hover the mouse over the link in the PDF, all the characters in the URL on the second line are missing, and the link doesn’t work. I first discovered this using Acrobat Professional 7. Yesterday I downloaded a trial version of Acrobat Professional 8 (8.1.0), and I still have the problem.

Yes, I know I can create a hyperlink character style in InDesign with the “no break” feature enabled. However, that can result in appearance and text flow problems.

b) Furthermore, I tried to convert a Word document with a long hyperlink to PDF (using the Word Print command), and the same problem occurs.

To make matters worse, when I try to convert any Word document to PDF using the “Adobe PDF/Convert to Adobe PDF” menu item, I get this message:

“The Acrobat PDFMaker server could not be loaded. Do you want to run the installer in repair mode?”

I tried the repair mode. Then I tried it again from the Add/Remove Programs option in Control Panel. That did not solve either problem. R... Read more

Using DI 7 on a regular basis to back up C to D drive I normally am asked if the existing image should be overwritten. Clicking Yes the copying proceeds. On this last occasion I was presented with "The Media is write protected" dialogue. To get around this I create a new folder and proceed.Question is: Why has this suddenly changed? There is nothing untoward from previous images, just a regular cleanup of system, uninstalling an unused program etc and updating the image.

Answer:Drive Image 7 "Media Is Write Protected"

No idea but you can change it by going into explorer, right click the Image file and change the file attributes to Archive remove the tick in write protect

Drive Encryption Password screen like normal just like on my Windows 7 laptop so I enter the password and it was correct and it began the encryption process again. When I finished with what I needed to do on the Windows 10 laptop I paused the encryption again
and disconnected the drive. I am now back on my Windows 7 Ultimate OS and plugged the drive in, Bitlocker Encryption Password Screen comes up again and I entered my password but now for some reason it's saying the password is incorrect?  "But It's

Ok long title but here's a rundown of the problem:

My friend was formatting his XP machine to install a clean Win7.
I went ahead and backed up his stuff on XP via EASEUS To-Do Backup utility onto a laptop HDD USB enclosure.
We installed Win7 on his machine.
We plugged in the USB Enclosure with the backed up data.
We then went into the EASEUS program and mounted the image file.
We went to access his User folder in Documents and Settings and got the error:
So I clicked Continue and then got the error:
So I went into the Security tab to add the current Username I was logged into as being able to access the folder and then I received this error:

There is no switch on the laptop HDD or USB enclosure to write protect it so I don't know why it's giving me this error. If anyone knows please help me out, thanks in advance!

Hi,

I have a table that has three fields and all of the fields are varchar fields.  I've just tried to add a new row to the table and one of the fields is giving me the following error message;
Error Message: Conversion failed when converting the varchar value 'iw' to data type int.

Like I said, all of the fields are varchar fields so I shouldn't be getting this message.  I also have the same value in the same field on different rows which have been entered without issue.

Suggestions would be appreciated :)

First, let me say I was an idiot for even thinking I should attempt this, given my computer skills. (Edited for clarity of the past tense, ...what I did, rather than the attempt to fix it now.)

I had a pdf file that I wanted to be able to use and print, rather than have to fill it out by hand. (It was a form for my bio lab subjects, needed for final submission.) I found a (free) conversion tool online, and ran the file through it. It didn't turn out a functional word document, but rather a bunch of "gibberish". So, I took the time to recreate the overall pdf page using word tools, and used it instead.

Sometime later, I went to open a file that I had on my laptop, and realized that I had the same gibberish that I was presented with in that conversion attempt. After perusing my files, I realized that I no longer had any pdf icons in my files, but rather a "modified" looking word icon, which I figured was in place in any location that had originally housed a pdf file. Of course, now they are all useless to me. It also appears that I can't download pdf files anymore without it trying to convert them in the same format.

Can anyone tell me what I can do about this? I tried to go through system restore, and unless I just didn't go back far enough, it didn't work. So I thought that I should ask for advice before I try to do anything else.

ETA, I am using the 2010 office suite with Windows 7

Answer:PDF to word conversion (failed) converted all computer files (?)

Can you right click one of these files and select "Open with?" If you can, select your PDF viewer (Adobe,Foxit, Nitro, or whatever it is) and see if it opens the file correctly. Since this problem affects all your PDF files, it almost seems like the file association for PDFs has been somehow changed.

I'm new to converting media files, and every piece of software I find just hasn't worked. So, I'm hoping that the gurus here can help me with suggestions on what Windows XP software is best for converting WMV files to MPEG or MPEG4 formats!

I'm having trouble with keeping up with codecs for WMV files too, so suggestions on a conversion programme that can keep up with current codecs would help

Something that affordable would be great, however I suspect I can come up with funds for the right piece of software.

Because I'm a newbie to video conversion, I get lost easily. I may know my way around some software types, but have no idea with these ones! If there's a "dummy's step by step guide to converting wmv to mpg" it'd make things a lot more simple. Think of me as your traditional blonde at the computer.

Thank you! I'll be in your debt if I can get this solved ASAP, because I'm getting so frustrated at this I'm thinking of throwing the computer out the window!

Answer:Media conversion software?

There are volumes of both freewares and sharewares for file conversion of different types. There are also long lists of sites to pick from when running a web search. One site with several sites listed is seen at Best Download Software - All Most Popular Software Free Download One free tool specific for wmv to mpeg is seen at ::.:: Iran Download - WMV to AVI MPEG WMV VCD SVCD DVD Converter v2.8.0 ::.::

As far as guides you simply follow the help files if any for the program itself. Some of the freewares will work well while others have adwares at times. Usually you select the first type of file from a menu to be converted like wmv and then you then choose the format for it to be changed to. DIVX is one shareware that seems good found among a few others at Video Encoders and converter Fully Reviewed Freewares

I have a media file that started out as an MP1 (MPG) file that's 45MB. It contains a 3-1/2 minute TV news story that I want to put on my web site in a secure section for a few business associates to see. (I had a VHS cassette sent to me, and then had a local shop convert it to the MPG file.)

My web host is a major jerk. (Suggestions on where to go for web hosting are welcome. EarthLink is my ISP if that helps.) He converted the MPG file to a 4MB RM (Real Media) file. The quality loss was significant but not intolerable. Then, so it downloads relatively quickly for dial-up users, he broke it into seven smaller RM files that are somehow strung together by a RAM file. However, the result leaves much to be desired in that there's not only a pause between segments but the progress bar starts from scratch for each segment -- there's no way to go to various places in the whole file. Not what I want to show my business associates! I also don't know if it's advisable to limit everyone to having to use Real Player to view it.

Is there a preferred way to go about this? (ASX just caught my attention, but I don't know enough about it, or about any of this.)

Also, is there any chance I can download a low-cost (or free) file format converter to do this myself?

Note that it's meaningless to ask my web host to do anything more. In fact, when I told him someone I know had a similar sized media file put on their web site in a way that the html page plays i... Read more

How do you convert cd files to mp3 so that I can load an external storage device via a USB port using media in windows me?

Answer:conversion of cd files to mpeg3 in windows media

In XP, you can install a plugin to WMP to enable ripping of CD's to .mp3 format.click hereUnfortunately you seem to be using Windows ME.FreeRip, however, supports Windows ME.click hereIf you have already ripped CD's to .wma formate using WMP, these can be converted to .mp3's using the free version of dBpowerMP.click hereUnfortunately, this particular conversion results in a significant quality loss.Tbh, I am not au fait with USB in Windows ME. Perhaps someone wiser might comment on this if it is an issue.

this appears to be the new partition that is created during the conversion.

i've tried using disk part to remove the write protection in the partition but this fails, i doubt the main HD is write protected as then i wouldnt be able to write anything to the C drive.

not sure what else to do here, if i continue the conversion fails and revers back (removes partition)

Hi,

I have encountered this problem which is bugging me for days now.
I was just creating back ups of my files to a different location of my PC (diff. partition, to be exact), the usual copy and paste. After a few minutes, I got this error that says 123.xlsx cannot be copied because the file is missing. I decided to skip it and continue backing up other files. After copying, I tried to locate and open the 123.xlsx file. The file was there but upon opening and after entering the password, it says "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened." I have 3 files like this, all of which are password protected. So I'm assuming that the password protection of excel has something to do with it.

I have tried multiple excel recovery tools from google. Even the steps for recovering corrupted files from Microsoft website, none of them worked.

I'm using MS Excel 2013, windows 8.1 64 bit; if it helps.

Please, I'm desperate. The files are equal to months of work. ( I know, I know, i should back up my files more often.)

Best regards,

Answer:Media is Write Protected

i hate external drives that require software to run. unless its only drivers you updated.

now if it were a desktop id suggest taking the HDD out and sticking it in your pc.. but thats an issue here.

If you have another computer to try it on then i suggest trying that. When ever ive had the old "write protected" issue its normally only been with flash drives and its because they are duff.

Also as an after thought, a system restore to a date when it worked may pay off, but its probably a long shot

I am on Vista, and use an usb cord to transfer to my ext hard-drive with ease, same as I do with my black berry just a simple drag and drop never had this problem, dont know why today.
Someone/anyone know how to turn it off?
Please and THANK you in advanced!

when trying to transfer a file from laptop to desktop external drive. i get the message that the media is write protected, this seems odd as i write to it quite often,
when i access the laptop via the homegroup and copy and paste to the external, it copies fine ,so i am perplexed as to how to remove the write protection ,ive had a look in security in the properties on the external but they look fine and all the permissions seem to be set correctly. any ideas.
its a real pain as the most space is on the external and i want to empty up the laptop

External 2.5" Seagate Momentus 320Gb HDD.

Recieved from my father-in-law, he says it doesn't work. So I take it and there is no power at all. I take it apart and replace the USB connector and I receive power. However, trying to initialize the disk in computer management windows 7 says "the media is write protected". Computer management labels it as a "CD-ROM", now I don't know if this might be an issue, or it just does that until the disk is initialized. I tried diskpart and modifying 'writeprotect' in the registry but neither worked.

I also loaded up Win XP x64 to try it there, but I received pretty much the same results.

Thanks

Answer:The media is write-protected

Under Windows 7, launch the registry editor (press Windows Logo + R, type regedit, then press Enter). Navigate then to this registry path:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Control > StorageDevicePoliciesRight click on writeprotect and select modify. Set the value data to 0, then click OK. Do the same with ControlSet001 and ControlSet002. Close the registry editor and restart your system. Try then to access your external storage device.

*******NO COMBO FIX LOG IS ATTACHED***********First, thank you for what you people do here. I suddenly began receiving the error "Windows - Delayed Write Failed. (Failed to save all the components for the file \System32\0000390c. The file is corrupted or unreadable. This error may be caused by a PC hardware problem)In addition, my desktop went black and lost my desktop icons. A box popped up saying I needed to purchase some time of computer fix. Researching the problem, I came across a forum that suggested running ComboFix from your site, which I did. After running it, I found the warning not to run it unless specifically instructed to. In any event, I did run it and currently my desktop icons are back, however my desktop background is still black and I have a new icon on my desktop that is a red circle with a white X on it. Please let me know what else I should do, if anything. I have not deleted ComboFix.exe from my computer or performed any other tasks. And again, thank you for what you do. Warmest regards

While using BitLocker Drive Encryption feature, i selected the settings for using the USB to store the security key. But, once I restarted my PC, BitLocker didn't recognized the USB and went into recovery mode.

Can anyone suggest as to why the USB key was not taken into consideration?

Answer:BitLocker Drive Encryption

Windows Vista didn't provided any means by which a user working on Windows XP could access a shared folder of an BitLocker encrypted drive. But, this feature was provided in Win 7 in the form of BitLocker To Go feature.

So, my question is, isn't it hampers the main motive that was behind BitLocker Drive Encryption feature?

Hi,

I have been having some issues when trying to turn Bitlocker on in C:

I have followed the instructions as per this forum to enable a Startup key in gpedit.msc as I dont have TPM which worked.

After following the instructions, Windows Bitlocker asked me to insert a USB to save the startup key to. This appeared to save and then moved onto the next step where I took down the recovery key etc... and finally restarted to make sure my system was compatible before encryption started.

Upon restart, Windows said that it couldnt find a key on the USB drive. After further investigation I found that windows did not save the key to the USB after all even checked as a hidden file. It will save the text file (recovery key) to usb but not the bek file for the startup key.

I have tried this several times but each time it wont save although the system dosent say there has been a problem and moves on to the next stage.

The USB is a 2gb cruzer with the smart drive software removed and re-formatted to NTFS. I have also tried this on other USB drives with no luck and the USB drives work as Iam able to write other things to it?

Any help would be greatly appriciated as I have searched this forum and MS forums with no luck.

Thanks
Marc

hi hw r u i want to know abt the drive encryption option in windw 7 i used Bitlocker drive encryption to lock or save my drive data(confidential data) frm others. ques is that this encryptn method is right i mean it will damage my hard disk or not . kindly tell me and if u tell me more methods for protection i really appreciate u.thanks

Answer:Bitlocker drive encryption

It will not damage the HDD just make sure you save the "Key" in a save place not on the computer (A hard copy on paper and a digital copy on a thumb drive two backups of the key is best) also the Windows OS partition or HDD can not be encrypted using Bitlocker.

I am sick of the file size limitations on my external drive. So I decided I would convert it to NTFS, however, when I run the command lines a message pops upROBLEM:cannot run because this volume is in use by another process. Convert may run if this volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid. What does this mean? Will it ruin my drive if I go through with it?Or can the invalid handles be repaired? What is an open handle?

Answer:NTFS External drive conversion

It means some program is using the drive. It may be because you have a folder open on that drive, or if you installed a defragger, it may be monitoring the drive.

In any case, if you have no program that you know of that is using the drive, then you may as well terminate all handles to it if the application offers. Otherwise, you can do it with chkdsk /x.

I just got my Lenovo X200 (without ultra base and I don't have a USB DVD drive)

The unit came with three recovery discs to upgrade (or downgrade depending on your views of Vista)

-Disc 1 : Start Recovery Disc
-Disc 2: Operating System Recovery Disc (Vista Business SP 1)
-Disc 3: Applications and Drivers Recovery Disc

I would like to use the 3 disc "recovery disc set" to roll over the pre-installed XP to Vista Business. How can I accomplish this without having to purchase a DVD drive? This will be pretty much the last time I will ever use one.

Anyways. I was hoping there would be a way to do it via my 160GB external hard drive OR some how sharing the CD/DVD drive on my old laptop over my "wireless network"??????

SO FAR---I partitioned my USB HDD into 3 and directly copied all the files on each respective disc into its respective partition. (no extra folders or anything, just as they were on the DVD. I then changed the BIOS priorities to boot from the USB HDD (it WAS recognized). However, once the boot proceeded I received "NTLDR is missing."

I hope there is a way!! I really don't want to buy a CD/DVD drive!!

Can anyone help me solve this problem?

I have a machine at work that is running windows 8 64 bit. Windows had crashed so we put on a new Windows install last week, C: was formatted and reinstalled with Windows and then encrypted with bitlocker, D: was decrypted so we could get get the data off and has not been re-encrypted.

I came in this morning to find that D: could not be written to.

When trying to copy a file to it, it says:
The disk is write-protected.
Remove the write-protection or use another diskClick to expand...

I have tried the following solution
http://www.pcworld.com/article/245174/restore_access_to_a_write_protected_hard_drive.html
I check my user permissions and for my user I have full access.

Next we were able to successfully format D: and I didn't do a quick format, not that it may have mattered... and after that didn't work we completely replaced the drive with a different drive and it still did it.

So its not the drive, its something with my install. I don't have anything suspicious I didn't have installed before so I am not sure why it is doing this.

Thank you so much for your time! The tech just wants to format again so if I can figure this out before it comes to that then that will be awesome. It would be nice to not have to redo 2 days worth of work setting up my dev environment...

Answer:Solved: The media is write protected

Also to add confusion, if I did system restore, to before it happened, it would work until next restart? I don't know if it is just some company policy that is set up on restart or what...

After installing an mSata SSD as my main boot drive for Windows 10 Enterprise I can no longer write to the internal HDD.
I have checked the read only status in disk part and everything is correct.
If I pull the drive from the laptop and insert it into a usb dock I can write files to just fine.
I am running out of space in the SSD and it really bugs me not being able to use my HDD.
Thanks for any input.

Answer:The media is write protected on internal HDD

Have you tried switching the internal HDD to a different SATA port when using it inside the PC enclosure/case? I'm curious if this is a property of just one SATA port or all of the available ones in your machine. If you can try plugging it into (or switching cables to use) a different SATA port, it may solve your problem (in which case you'll know it was the port) or not (in which case the drive becomes a more interesting suspect -- "interesting" because you can write to it when plugged into an external dock). For the nonce, you might want to just use it in your dock so you can write to it while we're getting this figured out.

Hi everyone,

I am in a bit of a pickle and am in need of your help. I have a newly built rig which I dual boot Vista HP 32bit and Win7 Ultimate 64bit. Up until about 3 days ago, I have been able to use my external USB backup drive, transfer music to my phone’s memory card, and use my thumb drives. Now every time I try to transfer something new to one of them, I get this.

“The disk is write-protected.

Remove the write-protection or use another disk”

I booted into Win7, and I was able to transfer files with no problems at all. As soon as I go back into Vista, can’t transfer or delete anything. Please help because this is really getting frustrating! If you need any more info let me know!

I am trying to set up a Vista Business computer to send and receive faxes. Right now I am stuck on the sending part.

Every time I try to send a fax, the following error message appears: "The message could not be sent. The media is write protected".

Details: I have three new computers hooked up to a domain controller running Server 2003. Two of the computers are running Vista Business, one is running XP Professional. One of the Vista machines and the XP machine are both sending faxes with no problems. The third computer keeps giving me the aforementioned error.

- I have tried placing the folder locally (on the C drive) since we are using folder redirection for the desktop and my docs. Still, no luck.

- All the permissions seem to be set correctly, based on the permissions of the working Vista machine.

-The fax is just a new fax with the text "test" on it.

- The only difference between the two Vista machines is the brand of the 56k modem used. Could the modem be causing this>

Anyone every seen this before or have any ideas for me?

Thanks!

It is on a computer running XP SP3. Now, it shows up in ?My Computer? but with no statistics and I cannot open it. The drive does not show up in Windows Disk Management. I have gone thru the Seagate website's ?External Drive Trouble Shooter for WinDOWS xp/2000? as well as contacting Seagate Support with no success. I have tried Windows Format, DOS Format, Seatools for Windows, HD LFF Low Level Format, testdisk_win, and Disk Wizard with no success. The drive showed up but they all reported failure in testing and/or accessing the disk. Seatools for DOS sounds like it would do the trick but it didnotrecognizeeitherofmyexternaldrives, theotheroneofwhichisworking. Can anyone recommend a fix? Seems to me that it is a software problem, not a hardware problem, so there should be a software solution. I have very limited funds and can't afford to replace the drive right now. It is used as a backup drive so loss of the data on the drive is not an issue. I'll just run another backup when the drive is restored to health. My boot drive is not backed up on this drive, so that is not a problem.

Hi,

I ran the manage-bde -status command of my encrypted OS Volume Drive and it shows 100% encrypted.
Does this mean that BitLocker encrypted the ENTIRE drive?

During the BitLocker setup, I did select to Encrypt the Entire Drive instead of the Used Space option.
I just want to double check if my entire OS drive is encrypted or not.
I assume that when it shows Percentage Encrypted as 100% then I guess it did encrypt the entire drive.

Now what if I had chosen to encrypt the Used Space only, then would it still show as 100% encrypted ?
Or am I wrong?

Thanks in advance

Hi Again,
Ive just converted a 64Gb USB Flash Memory from NTFS to Fat32, as far as im aware the conversion was successful confirmed by Disk Management and im still able to acheive 64GB space.
Im wanting to use the flash drive on the PS3, i know the PS3 will accept AVI files and MP4 files. The files range from home videos, movies and TV. some of the files will play but some wont, they are either not supported, no file in folders and file corrupt, but when I use my another 8Gb flash memory I have no problem watching any of those files types. Ive also used Format Factory to convert back and forth.
The flash drives packaging says USB flash memory but on PS3 it says USB flash disk, im sure that shouldn't make any difference.
Has any one got any idea where I have went wrong?
Thanks
Wams

Answer:Flash Drive conversion to NTFS to Fat32

Normally you cannot convert from NTFS to Fat32 without losing the data
you can do it the other way round.
I suggest you reformat the stick and then recopy the files to the stick.

Newbie to the Windows 10 world.

I just purchased a 6 TB drive, plugged it into my Windows 7 computer, and it worked fine for a system backup using Macrium prior to the Windows 10 conversion. Now am converted to Windows 10, and reading that I need the large drives converted to GPT from MBR.

I have found reference to the AOMEI Partition Assistant to make this conversion on the data drive, but the C drive is a different animal.

My understanding is that GPT is necessary for the large data drive, and only necessary for the GPT on the C drive if I migrate to UEFI.

I have two questions:
Is it necessary to have the 6 TB drive formatted in GPT, or does it solve any capacity issues I may have with MBR?
To convert the C drive to GPT, what are the steps I need to take to make this work? Make a Macrium backup and rescue disk, save an image file, reformat C drive, and then reload the image onto C drive, now in GPT format?

Would reloading an image onto a differently formatted C drive actually work? Or am I making this too complicated?

Answer:GPT disk conversion for both data drives and C drive

The conventional wisdom is that converting MBR to GPT when C drive is involved, requires a reinstall. But this isnt true. You can 'convert' your MBR C drive to GPT but it's a bit complicated. I'm not familiar with Aomei, I would recommend using either DriveImageXML (free) or Drive Snapshot (free trial but needs a serial #) to back up C drive. Once backup is done, destroy the partitions and create a GPT partition table with whatever tool you like. I prefer using Gparted in Linux-based Partition Magic. Your first partition should be an EFI system partition (used for UEFI booting), format it as FAT32 and give it the 'boot/EFI/legacy boot' flags. This partition need not be any bigger than 512MB. Next create a partition for C, whatever size you like. Then create any other partitions you want.

When done, boot into either a Windows-based rescue environment or Windows setup USB/DVD/etc. Now you will need GetWAIKTools, use it to download files necessary to create boot files for 10. Restore your backup image into the empty partition you designated for C drive. The partition needs to be at least as big as it was under MBR or it may not restore (i.e. if it's 100GB now then it needs to be at least that big before restoring).

Last use bcdboot (that you got from GetWAIKTools) in a CMD (command) prompt to create boot files. Make sure your EFI partition is mounted to a drive letter first. This is where boot files will go.

Example: bcdboot C:\Windows /l en-US /s A: /f UEFI

I have 2 identical Toshiba Satellite L455's- the only difference is that this one is 64bit and the other is 32bit.
On the 32bit machine, using Word 2003, I am able to send the fax created on the 64bit machine without getting the error message.
How do I correct the incorrect write protection message?

I'm going to suggest that you pose your question in the Microsoft Office forum of SevenForums.

When you do please be clear about the machine generating the document, the version of MS Office generating the document, whether the document is .doc, .docx, .txt format or whatever and which machine has the fax attached.

Hey guys, my friend gave me his 1.5TB portable HDD (WD1111B or 1110B) because he said he didnt need it anymore but also the fact that it has gotten a problem i havent encountered before. I can in no way seem to be able to reformat this drive. It also doesnt seem to appear in My Computer but does appear in device manager when the drivers when installed.

I have so far tried the following things.

1. CMD Disk list (at one point it listed it and some poeple say run the command attributes disk clean readonly which didnt work and when i tried regular clean it diappeared from the list)
2. I tried WD reformatter but it it failed
3. When i tried easeUS parition master free edition comes up with this error message (There are some error occurred while writing partition chains on disk)
4. In Disk management it shows the disk is unknown, not initialized and when i choose to initialize with MBR (master boot record) it comes up with the media is write protected

Any ideas?

Answer:Cannot reformate External HDD. Media is write-protected

Hello MajorFoley!

Could you please write the model of the drive once again as what you've given is somewhat incorrect?

If when trying to Initialize the rive, it says it's write protected, the write protection has to be first removed from the device. Recently there has been a similar problem here on the forum and I gave the steps there also:

1. Open Command prompt: click Start, type command, click Command Prompt
2. Type "diskpart" and press Enter
3. Type "list volume" and press Enter
4. Type select volume #, where # is the number of the drive that's giving you the "write-protected" error
5. Type "attributes disk clear readonly" and press Enter
6. Type "exit" and press Enter

These steps should make the drive read and write enabled again. Then it can be Initialized, Partitioned and Formatted, like already explained. To see which volume you have to type in, you need to see your partitions and see what diskpart's giving as information.

This should work if the hard drive is not damaged. You could check if it has any physical damage with the WD Data Lifeguard Software:
http://support.wdc.com/product/downl...id=810&lang=en

You could also try writing zeros from top to bottom to "refresh" the drive's state and then try and Initialize it again, see if that helps.

Did anything help you?

Best of luck!

Answer:My Labtop is asking for Windows Bitlocker Drive Encryption

If you didn't encrypt the drive, then who did? You can try F11 to reset the PC back to day 1 but all data will be lost. How do you know when a politician is lying? His mouth is moving.

Although I'm an Admin on my Win 10 Pro system (Surface Laptop), I can't access the subject menu. Instead, I receive the SysAdmin notice, as in the screenshot. This seems like a new "feature," as I could access it from my previous Win 10 Surface. I suppose that I could make myself a System account, perhaps with PsTolols, but is there an easier way? I can access the submenus in the screenshot, e.g., Suspend protection. Maybe there's really nothing to access, but what what settings are "managed by the SysAdmin? Thanks.

Hey guys I have a desktop That has Windows 7 Ultimate edition installed. My parents are having start up issues with the OS. When the OS starts up, Bitlocker Drive encryption Recovery comes up with and option to unlock 2 Drives which is a separate hard drive. it comes up with a recovery key of 4889F7FD. I manually type the key and click the M: Drive which is the recovery OS. It says Error Recovering Disk due to no recovery key. I click Back and it comes up with a different recovery key as F9F25CA2. If both drives have the same password would the recovery key be the same. The bitlocker says I have temparary access but doesnt log me in.

When I go to safe mode, It loads half the files and comes up with the same. Start up recovery cant fix it. when I login to safemode, it loads half the files. Does this sound like a system wipe or can I fix this with a WIndows 7 Disc.

Answer:Bitlocker Drive Encryption OS Start up problem

Hello Zhall, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The key number ID it gives you is only to help you reference what BitLocker Recovery Key is the correct one to enter. I sure hope that you saved or wrote down the actual BitLocker Recovery Key for that drive somewhere in case something like this happens. Without it, you're not going to be able recover the HDD very easily.

Check using the tutorial below to see if you may have the actual BitLocker Recovery Key somewhere, and how to recover the OS drive.

Any valued idea on how Bitlocker can be tweaked to decrypt 1TB EXTERNAL HDD faster? It took over 24Hrs to encrypt it 5 months ago. I have decided to decrypt it but seems like it will take it almost the same amount of time it took to encrypt.

Dear community,
My WD external harddrive has suddenly stopped working after coming from Europe. I plugged in the HD into my laptop and I noticed that it does not show up under My Computer, only under Safely Remove Hardware and Devices. So I searched forums a bit and a couple
have said that I should go to Disk Management and see if my drive is there.
Turns out the HD is listed there, however as 'Disk 1: Unknown 1.379 GB, Not Intialized'. There is no blue bar either, it just says the size of the disk and that it is unallocated (it does not have a Volume letter).
When I start up Disk Management it gives me a notification:
Initialize Disk
You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it.
Select Disk:
Disk 1
Use the following partition style for the selected disks:
MBR (Master Boot Record)
GPT (GUID Partition Table)
So I click on MBR and press OK, and it gives me the error 'The media is write protected'.
So I go into the registry under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Control > StorageDevicePolicies
and change the value in 'writeprotect' to 0, and then I reboot my computer. Same error.
I can't even reformat the disk because I cannot find such option, not that I want to really, because I have 1.2 TB worth of data on there that I want to keep so losing the information on this Drive will be quite.... frustrating.
Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Disk unable to intialize - Media is write protected

I suggest you download and run the WD disk diagnostic software. It sounds like the disc is failing(failed):

Hi
I'm running Win 10 Pro version 1607 (OS Build 14393.321), and I have a weird problem with my 298 GB WD in 2.5? SATA enclosure external hard drive. I have used it several times in the past to backup Windows 7 & 10, but now I can use it to backup Win 7 only not Win 10! I believe this problem may have started after I performed a quick format on it using a Win 10 machine, and also ran CHKDSK /R in order to mark the bad sectors.
Now when I use it to backup my Win 10 machine, backup fails with error 0x8031004A: "BitLocker Drive Encryption cannot be used because critical BitLocker system files are missing or corrupted. Use Windows Startup Repair to restore these files to your computer." Also if I click on manage space it gives an error ?The backup location is not connected? even though it is connected and accessible (even shown in the backup page itself)!

Another weird issue, if I try to scan the drive from the Tools tab in Properties, scan fails with this error: ?
Windows was unable to scan the drive?, and the event viewer report shows:
"Checking file system on E:
The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation.
A snapshot error occured while scanning this drive. You can try again, but if this problem persists, run an offline scan and fix."
But if I chose Scan and Repair, it runs successfully and reports: ?Windows successfully scanned the drive. No errors were found.?
Windows Startup Repair does... Read more

hello, i use Bitlocker Drive Encryption to lock one partion from two. Everything goes corectly, but after i change my MotherBoard of mai Dell Inspiron Laptop and i put my password, doesn.t work. Bitlocker said isn.t the right password. Im sure about my password.it is true. My warranty changed just my Motherboard and they don.t change nothing in my Hard Drive. I didn.t reinstall my windows. Why Bitlocker Drive doesn.t recognize my password? Please , i need help

Answer:Bitlocker Drive Encryption doesn.t recognize my password

Your harddrive doesn't only have a bitlocker password but bitlocker is also communicating with TPM chip on mainbord. And the mainboard has been swapped so you hav a new TPM chip with other secret key.

Trusted Platform Module - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Didn't they check to see if it was bitlocker protected?
Do you have a backup? I assume you make backups prior to send your machine away

Answer:Lost my windows bitlocker drive encryption recovery key

Hello @Destro78 Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting. BitLocker keys (for personal devices) are stored inside or in many case they are back-up to Microsoft cloud with your Microsoft account. Since this is a tablet, I suspect that I suspect your recovery key is available in Microsoft's OneDrive spaceHere are instructions how you can recover the key as well as how to get back to business.>> http://windowsitpro.com/microsoft-surface/locating-your-microsoft-surface-bitlocker-recovery-key>> http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21433-bitlocker-recovery-unlock-drive-windows-8-a.html  >> http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=237614https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey Login to the MS account there and check.Use the key to login to your PC.Eventually, if you prefer you can disable BitLocker and turn off device encryption, or save/print the key offlinePlease, note that it is very important for security reasons that you keep the encryption key (Bitlocker key) in a secure place so that only you know it.  More info - re. Hello,

First off, Bitlocker has never been used on this computer. All its drives have never been encrypted. The problem is that when I open Bitlocker Drive Encryption in the Control Panel there are absolutely no drives listed at all. The area under the heading "BitLocker Drive Encryption - Hard Disk Drives" is completely blank, as is the area under "BitLocker To Go". However, Windows Explorer detects all hard and removable drives just fine.

I have tried the following:

1. chkdsk /r (no problems found)
2. sfc /scannnow (no problems found)
3. rebuilding the MBR with Comodo Cleaning Essentials (which didn't quite like the one I had) after aswMBR found no problem
4. repairing/resetting file and registry ownership and permissions to defaults using SubInACL scripts for registry and Tweaking.com for files. (This did fix a few minor nagging problems I had, by the way)
5. a clean boot
6. anti-malware scans (including several offline rescue CD's like Kaspersky, Comodo, ESET and AVG)
7. creating a new user account with admin privileges and trying from there
8. trying to trace file and registry activity with Sysinternals Process Monitor (but I don't really understand what to look for, or what most the results in the listing mean, good or bad)
9. A repair installation/inplace upgrade after a clean boot (this was a problem)

The repair installation fails and aborts quickly with the following error message:

Hello,
In our organization we have a policy to require Bitlocker flash drive encryption. This is set via Group Policy. I am having an issue on some computers where when they select to encrypt their flash drive for the first time, they get the following error message:
BitLocker Encryption cannot be applied to this drive because of conflicting Group Policy settings.
When write access to drives not protected by BitLocker is denied, the use of a USB startup key cannot be required. Please
have your system administrator resolve these policy conflicts before attempting to enable BitLocker.

Comparing to my laptop which is working, here is what I've gathered:

Same OU/Group PoliciesNo group membershipsSame TPM settings in BIOS and TPM Management ConsoleTried multiple flash drivesDoesn't matter who is logged in. Local admin, Domain Admin, or the user of the machine.
We do not require a USB startup key (obviously) and the policy is set to store the recovery passwords and key packages in AD DS. Another thing is the workstation HD is encrypted and the recovery key is in AD, so that tells me at least at one point it had
a healthy relationship with the DCs.
I am convinced it is not an issue with the policy, as there are currently only 2 users complaining of this issue out of 450. Where do I go on the workstation side of things to see what is happening? For your peace of mind, I have isolated the workstation
in it's own OU with only one policy applied. Here is what the policy ... Read more

So I ended up opening a ticket with Microsoft. The solution was to change the following registry value from 1 to 0:
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\FVE\EnableBDEWithNoTPM
For some reason I am guessing during Windows installation it didn't detect the TPM correctly and put that in there. Who knows. Working now!

Hi,

My external hard drive (2TB Toshiba USB 3.0) with BitLocker To Go encryption was accidentally formatted using Windows ?Quick Format? option.  My PC is running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I do have the following details in relation to the BitLocker encryption for this drive;
- BitLocker Recovery Key
- Full Recovery Key Identification
- BitLocker Password

Is there any way to restore the external drive to the ?pre-format? state so that I can recover/access the data?

The drive is in a good health, ? always removed safely by ejecting from notification area and chkdsk has no errors, ? unfortunately data wasn?t backed up as I was in process of migrating to new PC and accidentally deleted the master back-up .

Any help or suggestions would be greatly welcomed.

Every where i look, people are saying to open BitLocker in Control Panel, but i cant find it anywhere. I am using an HP Notebook 2000 with windows 8.1. if someone could help that would be awesome!!!

Answer:Cant find BitLocker Drive Encryption in control panel at all! HELP!!!!!!!

Hi?
Have you ever changed a group policy setting? run "gpedit.msc", this will lauch GP Editor, then locate to User configuration\Administrative Templates\Administrative Templates\Hide specified
Control Panel items,
check whether it is enabled, and check whether you have added Microsoft.BitLockerDriveEncryption
in the list.Or you can just right click the hard drive which you want to set up BitLocker, then see whether there's an option "Turn on BitLocker".

Okay so i was doing your usual conversion of a FAT32 drive to NTFS using Paragon partition manager. It was my external 500gb lacie hard drive (H and to my horror i returned from class to see my computer had rebooted during the process. It was my own human error as i forgot to stop the windows update process in the command prompt.

Now i couldnt afford to let my pc convert it in the saftey of a no OS environment that day because i had to write an essay, but now im wishing i had. The problem is around 80% of my files are now no longer showing on the drive, but the space for them is still allocated. That lead me to the conclusion theyre still on the drive.

I decided to finish the conversion on Paragon which kept bringing up an error. After running a CHKDSK /F fix acronis carried on the operation as per normal and reached 100%. STILL MY FILES WERE MISSING.

I then decided to run numerous recovery programs to see if i could find the files. However they all picked up zilch...

My final idea was to run the seriously time consuming CHKDSK /R as a last ditch attempt. All was going well until it came up with an "unspecified error" at the end of stage 5. Now im all out of ideas...

I am going to try defraging and running CHKDSK /R again to see if the error is a reccuring one... If it is then im stumped. Its just really annoying because my files are still on there! The space is allocated but theyre just not showing up!!!! ARGH!

Hi All,

I have a Windows 7 Enterprise Ed laptop which does not applies the computer GPOs. User GPOs work fine.
In the event log, Event ID 1125 is logged:
?The processing of Group Policy failed because of an internal system error. Please see the Group Policy operational log for the specific error message. An attempt will be made to process Group Policy again at the next refresh cycle.?

In the Details tab:
Error code 19, ?The media is write protected?

When I run ?gpupdate /force? or ?gpupdate /target:computer? After a long time, I get the message: ?Computer Policy update has not completed in the expected time. Exiting??GPRESULT /H GPReport.html gives: ?ERROR: Access Denied? (run as local administrator)RSoP.msc: ?The RSoP snap-in was unable to generate the RSoP data due to the error listed below. Details: This operation returned because the timeout period expired?

The laptop is part of a large domain (more than 10k clients). This is the only one with this error (for as far as I know?)
Any help would be much appreciated.
