An ADO-based application that is compiled in Windows XP but does not run in Windows 7

Question: An ADO-based application that is compiled in Windows XP but does not run in Windows 7

Hi all,

I have read online that there is a solution for ADO-base application to work from top-down level, i.e, Win 7 to Win XP etc. However, I would like to know is there a solution to solve a bottom-up level problem for ADO application to work. A
short background story, I'm now working on a VB6 project which is running perfectly fine in Win XP ver. However, when I move my project from XP to Win 7 SP1 (Enterprise Version), and I tried to recompile it, I got the
"xx_deprecated" error.
I learn that using msado60_Backcompat.tlb is able to solve the top-down issue. So what about bottom-up? Does this method works too? Hope any gurus here can advise on me this issue. Thank you very much.

Regards,
Bern

Preferred Solution: An ADO-based application that is compiled in Windows XP but does not run in Windows 7

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Greeting,

I'm trying to run an application, named Da51, STK, and POS, which are written in MS-DOS based since 20 years ago.

Now here's the thing, I tried to right-click on the .exe file.

I execute command.com, I went to that folder, and manually type in the command myself.
- 1st attempt, nothing happen

I manage to run command.com. However, I'm confused with this part.

A user has resized a window within a hosted web application to the point where it is exactly OK/too small, meaning it flickers back and forth between having scroll bars and not. While it is in this state, it essentially freezes out any other commands in the window or ability to resize it. Are there any ways to interupt this, delete application window size preferences or other ideas? I know this is data that is stored locally as I can execute the same functions on another PC sucessfully. This is viewing of a web hosted PC based medical application by a standard PC running Windows 7, IE9. Is there a way to delete user preferences for the application so it will default to orginal window sizing?

Thanks!

Answer:Re-Sizing of Web Based Application Windows

As a workaround, you could try a free program I use myself to automatically resize your different applications. I know how annoying this can be, in my case, especially for Internet Explorer.

It looks like it has been quite an exciting mounth, don?t you think so? After all, there has been the announcement of Microsoft skipping the numeral ?9? in order to jump straight to Windows 10 as the next version of the operating system, where it is widely touted to arrive some time in the summer next year

I already reported that Microsoft steams ahead with Windows 10 development, build 9855 recently compiled but today we have got a new build 9859 and this version has been sent to a number of Microsoft partners for testing purposes.

Good news! Windows 10 might officially be signed off this week it seems, as today build 10176 from the th1 branch appeared on buildfeed, and appears to be one of the first candidates for RTM. RTM stands for "Release to Manufacturing", which generally implies the software is complete, but this time round with RTM, that doesn't necessarily ring true.

The Windows 10 RTM will be a build of Windows 10 that is stable and not buggy, it will be missing a number of features that will be coming in later builds of Windows 10 as that is simply the nature of WaaS (Windows as a Service). As Terry Myerson put it recently, "we will never be done" as the software will always be updated. So this time round RTM is just a milestone, a starting point for OEMs and consumers if you will.

If all goes well, Microsoft could have an RTM build of Windows 10 ready by the end of the week, which is very exciting.

It's only been four days since the Windows 10 Technical Preview was released to the public, however that doesn't mean the build that was issued with the Technical Preview is new. Windows 10 build 9841 was compiled on September 12, which was around three weeks ago. That's ancient in development time, so it's no surprise that build 9855 was recently compiled.

Thanks to the "preview builds" ability (which doesn't currently work) in the Windows 10 Technical Preview, users who are using the Technical Preview have managed to see some more recent builds of Windows 10. According to logs that appear when the operating system is attempting to connect to the update server, the operating system is seeing builds as new as a few days ago. Build 9855 was compiled on October 2nd, just two days ago.

Can somebody explain to me what a LAN Based Application is? I've tried to google it but cannot find nothing. I would imagine its an application that only operates within a LAN, so i.e an office, so it wont be able to communicate to another office?

Thanks

Answer:LAN Based Application

It is an application that runs only on a LAN (Local Area Network) without internet access.

The LAN could be small, 3 - 4 clients; or large with over 500 clients in multiple buildings.
I have worked in both situations and used propriatary applications that ran on the LAN, but were not designed to be accessed from the internet.

Video Conferencing, Remote Access Control, Gaming Servers, all started as LAN applications.

This is the best info I could find and it isn't much.

I posted in this forum as I feel this is security related. Mods move if need be.

I'm looking for a web based (preferably PHP) change log program. It should do the following:

1. Be simple!
2. Allow people to enter descriptions of basic system changes
3. Changes should have categories by systems and can be filtered as such.
4. Time stamp the actions and have a "master display" where all changes can be viewed
5. LDAP authentication would be nice.

Does such a thing exist? My goggling has failed due to "change log" being such a popular term.

I have a neat idea that I would like to try out. Caution this is going to get nerdy not just geeky. I play D&D and my group uses a program that has our characters on it. It's a very old program made for Win 95 but I have made it work in everything from Linux to Vista.

I want to find a way to put the program online so my group can all edit their characters instead of doing it last minute before we play. I have a web server and hosting so thats no issue. My first thought is to use a VPN or terminal services but is there a way to just host the application by it's self? What I would like is something as non technical as having a desktop icon they can just click and it opens the program as if it's local.

Answer:make an application web based

Sure, just rewrite it in some language your web server can run and have it save all its data in an appropriate database accessible to the web server.

If you're talking about just putting the .exe on your website, it doesn't really work that way. By default, Windows won't run programs from the internet, and the web server won't allow you to write data to it. Depending on how the app works, you may be able to give each person a copy and configure it to save its data remotely in a central location. It might be possible to do something like Sysinternals Live, but I doubt you'd be able to do with just regular hosted webspace. That also doesn't take into account the saving/sharing of data, just the remote access to the .exe.

Hi
in 2015 I bought an Inspiron 15 7000 series laptop. It originally had windows 8. In June or July of 2016, I took advantage of Microsoft's offer to upgrade it to a Windows 10 via online. I got it to work fined. In October of 2016, I suddenly got a blue screen with the message 'no boot device found'. I used the diagnostics tool but nothing resolved the problem. I can go to the command prompt and I can see an x:\ and I am able to display the contents of the drive.
I bought a usb-based windows 10 in order to just start from scratch but during installation, I end up with a display saying  no drive detected.
I now want to do a low-level format, that is, erase everything in the drive, treat it like a 'virgin' drive and then install my usb-based windows 10 software.
When I am in command prompt, I am unable to execute the format command because the system gives me a 'drive is protected' msg.
What tool could you recommend I use to low-level the hard drive so I can install my usb-based windows 10?
Thanks.

You did not complete the process of neutralizing malware in your topic at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic469409.html/page__st__15 . You were requested to run a malware log and you failed to respond/resply to said request...and your topic was subsequently closed for lack of response.

That topic reflected symptoms that you now complain about.

I suggest that you send a PM to Gringo, asking for that topic to be reopened...and finish that topic...before making assumptions that your system is clean and devoid of problems previously existing.

For the pharmacy I have made an application to support a drug preparation. This application is used in public pharmacies as well as in hospitals and industry.
This is a web-based application. So the installation has been done on the server with a configuration within IIS.
The clients start the application in InternetExplorer.
Why InternetExplorer? Because the client's preparation protocols, raw materials need to be weighed and labels must be printed. Hereby I use self-programmed ActiveX controls. And other browsers do not support ActiveX controls.
The web-based application is generally found to be good.
As Edge is increasingly "pushing", InternetExplorer seems to be the cornerstone, as well as the application described above.
My questions are now:
- How long are web-based applications still supported?
- Will Edge support ActiveX controls in the future?
- Is there an alternative?
I would appreciate if there were sound answers to the above questions.
Sincerely,
Wim

I have a web based application and want it to port it on Windows Vista . What are the procedures I must follow to check for its compliance on safe deployment on Vista?

Answer:Web Based Application Compliance Testing

Let's see. I have no clue, but if I think about it, it must be:
Does your web server software work properly in Vista?
Which flavor of Vista do you plan on using?
Do you have the hardware to support it?
Have you checked into any of the documentation?
If you have checked into the documentation, promptly ignore it, set up your own test box, and see how things shake out. If what you find out on your own correlates with the documentation, then you might start to have some confidence.

That's where I would start if it were me. Essentially, a web service comes down to the web-server software, some sort of a middle tier, and I would imagine some sort of database. Are they compatible with Vista?

Hello

At Work we can't yeet install Windows 10 and unfortunately sometime i have some problem to downgrade some workation.
For example last time, trying to install Windows 7 i had this error "set up was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition" .

Could you tell me if exist a Live cd like Hiren boot CD but Based on Windows 10 or Windows 8 with some utility to erase completely the disk ?

Answer:Window Live Rescue based on Windows 10 or windows 8.0

Both the standard Windows 10 and Windows 8 installation disks will erase the drives. When the first Windows setup screen appears, press Shift + F10. This will open a command Window. Then assuming the first drive is where you are going to install Windows to it is:

diskpart
select disk 0
clean
exit
exit

That will erase the entire hard drive. If you are not sure the drive is disk 0 you can do:

list disk

before you do select disk 0 and that will show you the drives then you can select the correct one.

Then select the custom install option and when given a list of drives, select the unallocated space to install to and click next to let Windows set up the drive the way it wants to automatically.

Theoretically speaking, if different types of malware files where to penetrate past Kapsersky's protection and get placed into "Low Restricted", how much damage is possible under default settings?

Answer:Kaspersky Policy Based Application Control

Theoretically speaking, damage same as trusted group. Low restricted is basically trusted group in default settings (Automatic mode). Application control is for interactive mode, in which the prompts gets issued, then Low restricted is useful as much as the user knows.

Hi,

Could anyone tell me which of the many languages I should/could use to develop a browser based application meant to support database functions (store/retreival to local disk of user inputs) and that could read and send data off the host PC serial port. I'm not looking for client/server stuff, just a plain browser based application running on a local machine for accessing its local serial port and sending/storing data to or from it. I could do it using WinAPI or MFC but I would prefer to have the familiar web based application instead.

I'm not familiar with ASP.NET, PHP, XML, SQL etc... so I wonder if any of them could dot the job ??

Thanks in advance.

Hi All,

My Problem is user dont have the admin access, either i need to use my ID or administrator ID. Which installs application into Appdata\Local folder which wont be accessible by other users.
How to i enable the application for other users as well without providing admin access

Answer:Installing profile based application in other users folder

What ATT app is this? If it's for accessing the internet then that doesn't require any installed program, just plug in the wire or access wireless signal via icon in SYstem Tray. Any installed program beyond this for this purpose is bloatware.

But once we know what the program is for exactly we can help you better.

HI There,

I'm looking for a simple windows service that I can schedule to run that will do the following:

1.  Search a .log file for a given phrase - "fail" for example.
2.  If this is found, send an email and alert (screen popup) to the administrators.

I may need to resort to a batch file do this, but I hope was hoping something already existed and I could have this up and running very quickly.

Please let me know if you know of anything that fits the bill.

Thanks.

Answer:Looking for an application that searches in a file and emails based on finding

This is a simple batch file if you have an e-mailer that lets you send from the command line.  I haven't tried this in ages on Windows, so I don't know which one(s) might be available.

You should take a look at the post, How to create a command-line toolkit for Windows, on these very forums, paying special attention to the "grep" command that's part of UnixUtils.  Grep allows you to do the kind of search for text content you're seeking with ease.  You can then either query the status code returned after the command or redirect the output of the command to a file, and check that its size is not 0 bytes, to determine whether it found what you're looking for.  A simple 'if' construction afterward to trigger the e-mail to be sent and you're done.

You may prefer to go with installing Cygwin rather than the UnixUtils if you want something more current and want to have a more extensive set of Unix commands available to you under Windows.

With iOS and Android, it's the same OS on different devices. With Windows devices powered by ARM processors, they use Windows RT instead of Windows Phone 8.1. So why does Microsoft think it's a better idea to have a tablet that kind of looks like it has full Windows, has a desktop, but can't use any real desktop programs when they could have one that's easily distinguishable from an Intel based tablet and has it's own entire ecosystem and way of working?

Answer:Why do ARM based Windows tablets use Windows RT?

Because people are more familiar with Windows and it would be easier to navigate.

Windows Phone OS isn't really designed to be a "tablet" OS like Android and iOS are, either.

We have .Net 4.5 based WPF application. It works correctly on Windows 7.
When we moved it to Windows 10 it started malfunctioning.
On investigation we found that when we type a set of 2 character typing will make one Chinese character.
In windows 7 when we press first character it is converted to <BLANK space> for display in text box. When we press another character again it decides the final Chinese character to render.
In windows 10 this behaviour has changed.
when we press first character it is NOT converted but render as it is. When we press another character it decides the final Chinese character to render, by replacing first and second character typed.
Is the expected behaviour of Windows 7 vs Windows 10?

Answer:.Net 4.5 WPF application worked fine on Windows 7, malfunction on Windows 10 for Chinese characters. Is this expected?

Sounds logical.

Hi,I'm running a machine with XP Pro, SP3. After logging in on startup, I get a pop up box from the "File Helper" application that says "The application or dll C:\windows\system32\shell.dll Is Not A Valid Windows Image." Other than that, the computer runs fine. AVG finds no viruses on full scan. Malwarebytes finds no viruses on full scan. I just don't know why I get that popup on startup.First of all, is "File Helper" a legit program? I inherited this old computer, and am trying to make it run. I've been sifting thru reading many of the posts on here, but there is nothing directly on point for my issue. Please help! I am stumped! A few weeks back my dad had somebody look at his computer and "fix" some problems. However, I don't know what was wrong with it. Whenever I used it I saw no problems. Now after whoever looked at the computer messed with it, Windows Explorer frequently locks up for a moment and then it displays a WerFault.exe - Application Error that states "The instruction at (some address) referenced memory at (same address). The memory could not be written. Click on OK to terminate the program." The lock ups appear to happen at ramdom because it locks up when sitting idle as well.

The computer itself doesn't crash and there are no BSOD. I looked at the Event Logs in the Event Viewer and found errors occuring "Windows Logs\Application" portion. My laptop had gotten infected with antivirus live a few days ago. I was able to run safe mode with spybot search & destroy & super anti spyware and they removed several infected files. I rebooted the computer and antivirus live is gone but now I am receiving the message "the application or dll c:\windows\default32.dll is not a valid windows image. please check your installation diskette". I have tried various times to download malware-bytes but I receive a runtime error "0" along with 2 other errors and it will not allow me to install it properly or open the program. I have even tried renaming the file name for install, but no luck. I have run avg and updated it but it finds nothing. I've also run microsoft malicious software removal tool & it finds nothing. Been doing some google research for the past few days and have come up empty on all accounts. I've included a hijack-this log and hope someone can shed some light on this.Thank you all in advanceWanted to mention that I can only use a wireless connection so if I am in safe mode I cannot connect online. I have another computer though that I can use to transfer files via usb. Ran CCleaner as well to clean up the system. I've also tried Rkil first and then tried to install malware bytes but I still the the vb error and runtime error.Merged posts. ~ OB

Windows Defender Application Guard Spotted in Latest Windows 10 Builds

Microsoft first announced Windows Defender Application Guard for Microsoft Edge in late 2016, promising to release it to insiders in the coming months before making it broadly available to everyone with the Creators Update, and it turns out that this feature has been silently implemented in the last preview build.

Windows 10 Creators Update (Redstone 2) build 15031 comes with the Windows Defender Application Guard integrated into Microsoft Edge, and as @gus33000 discovered, you can easily check it out for yourselves by simply typing about:applicationguard in the address bar.
At this point, the only thing we can see is the intro screen, which confirms the existence of the feature in Microsoft Edge, and it?s believed that Microsoft would make it official with the next build expected this week.

What is Windows Defender Application Guard?
This new security feature for Microsoft Edge adds a new protection layer to Windows 10 devices that isolates threats in a sandbox, limiting their access and blocking them from impacting computers or stored data.

?Windows Defender Application Guard uses the latest virtualization technology to help protect your operating system by creating an isolated environment for your Microsoft Edge session. It starts up every time you visit a non-work-related site, to help keep potentially malicious attacks away from your PC,? the intro screen currently available in Microsoft E... Read more

With their AV being mediocre at best, implementing additional layers of security directly baked into the OS can only be a good thing for anyone using Windows 10.

Houston, I have a problem. It started yesterday when attempting to log on to a user account, McAffee states that it detected a virus and recommends a scan. I click 'ok' once or twice and the following message appears: application failed to initialize (0xc0000005).

After reading through some of your posted solutions, I had to C-A-D to get task manager up so I could run Microsoft Anti-Spyware. It detected one and I removed it. I then started a McAffee scan and it found another one (maybe more, but I fell asleep waiting for it to finish). When I logged back in, McAffee was saying the same thing, I C-A-D and a c:\ window appears saying c:\WINDOWS\temp\setup.exe

It has been like this for 45+ minutes. I can attempt to shut it down, and it asks if you're sure (which I am not) so I cancelled out to let it run. The cursor inside the c:\ box appears to be moving around every 30 to 90 seconds. . . leading me to believe that it is doing something.

When I fire McAffee backup, I cannot find the one file it found before I fell asleep (not in quarentine anyway).

Any recommendations?

Answer:Windows Xp Application Failed To Initialize (0xc0000005); Then C:\windows\temp\setup.exe Running Forever

PS Earlier this week I had to install NAV fixabwiz to rid my self of a trojan virus. After running following its instructions to disable windows auto-restore and running it, the laptop did behave okay for a day or two.

I am running Windows XP on a Parallels 7.0 desktop (MACBOOK running OS Lion).
I recently upgrade to LION when my old computer died. I migrated my entire hard drive from Time Capsule to new computer - when I entered Parallels/Windows to use my ACT! software, I get this error:

am deploying an application on Windows 8.1 which has SSO enabled (uses NTLM). There are two examples: good and bad. The only difference that has been determined between the two is that in a failure scenario, the wireshark trace show that NTLM negotation
is wrapped up by the GSS-API Generic API.

In case of good login (again on Windows 8.1) there are no GSS-API messages. It has simple NTLM Secure Service Provider message (no GSS-API).

Additionally, in a bad trace i have also seen the INITIATOR_NEGO and INITIATOR_META_DATA.

Both these cases and login happen with same Os (8.1), same client application. In order to determine if this is application problem, i want to find a way in which i can make the bad login scenario testwithout the
GSS-API wrapper. But i cannot find a way to disable it on the OS.

There should be one i believe, because two same OS, one uses GSS-API one does not. Anyone can help me with this and share ideas?

I just installed an HP Deskjet 5740. I could not find the install disk, so I installed the drivers and software through the HP Support Website.
Now I am receiving an error box that will NOT close. It reads the following:

hpcmpmgr.exe - Bad Image
The application or DLL c:\WINDOWS\system32\msxml4.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

I tried to run the HP software updates but that would not work.

Please advise. My father wants to keep this printer. Thank you for your time.

Windows Defender Application Guard for Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge with Windows Defender Application Guard mode enabled on the Edge browser will protect enterprises from advanced attacks that can infiltrate your network and devices via the Internet, creating a safer, worry-free browsing experience for customers.
ARSTECHNICA - Application Guard extends Virtualization Based Security to protect against browser flaws.

Microsoft has announced that the next major update to Windows 10 will run its Edge browser in a lightweight virtual machine. Running the update in a virtual machine will make exploiting the browser and attacking the operating system or compromising user data more challenging.

[...]

Microsoft recognizes that this feature would be desirable on consumer machines, too, and not just for Edge.

This may be acceptable for a locked-down enterprise environment, but it isn't a good fit for consumers. Virtualization also likely comes at some performance cost, although Microsoft is not saying just what that performance cost is right now.

Nonetheless, this use of virtualization to harden a system is an exciting move.

Application Guard will become available later this year in Insider builds of Windows, hitting a stable version some time in 2017.

Answer:Windows Defender Application Guard, Windows 10 Edge 2017

In theory it sounds good but let's wait to actually see the feature. Makes no sense to make appcontainer and then decide to do a Vm so soon and why would they put it only on Edge? Micro vm usually involves higher resource usage but who knows MS has the money to maybe figure it out. It will be good for the industry.

Greetings!I'd be very grateful for any help with a malware/spyware problem I've run into. I'm not sure how it happened, I started getting the message ?The application or DLL C:\Windows\System32\wowfx.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.? Can no longer access internet, so I'm using my office computer to do research. I attempted to complete all the steps suggested on this website: 1) Went to "Start" -> "Run" and typed in the box: "cleanmgr," but computer froze up. 2) Ran Ad-Aware several times, problem persisted. 3) Downloaded Spybot, but program will not run. 4) Ran McAfee Stinger, problem persists. Other symptoms: can no longer access control panel. Occasionally get message indicating that a Trojan has been identified and removed. Downloaded HijackThis, here's the log. Hi, guys!
I need to register antivirus app in Windows Security Center. For this purpose I am using application (SCPI.EXE) that implements WSC API IWscAVStatus inteface. For some reason, when
application is started from the command line, I get the following error:
The system cannot execute the specified program.

Expecting Windows event log, I found error (event ID 3002) from CodeIntegrity:

Code Integrity is unable to verify the image integrity of the file \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Program Files (x86)\Shield Antivirus\scpi.exe because the set of per-page image hashes could not be found on the system.

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate with Service Pack 1 (x64).

SCPI.EXE is sign with valid certificate with both SHA1 and SHA256 digest, all is validated fine with signtool and it works fine on Win8 & Win10.

Can you give me some hint about what's going on? Is this some special Win7 issue? I see that many others had the same trouble, but with system drivers and dlls, however, this is completely user-made application and has nothing to do with the system, so any
system cleanup/repair is out of the question.
Thank you!

Whenever we try and do certain things on the computer, we get this error message:
"The application or dll c:\windows\system32\schannel.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

For example, when we try to use Outlook Express, this error will appear and Outlook Express will not download our emails.

If it helps, this problem did not seem to exist until I downloaded some recent Microsoft Windows updates.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:The application or dll c:\windows\system32\schannel.dll is not a valid windows image

Click Start, click Run, type %Windir%\system32, and then click OK.
Note %Windir% represents the path of the Windows system folder. Typically, C:\Windows is the path of the Windows system folder.
Right-click the schannel.dll file, and then click Rename.
Type schannel.dll.old, and then press ENTER.
Restart the computer.

Greetings experts,

Short story: I got called in to the exec office. Their computer gives me the following error message after boot-up, right after the desktop appears:

Quote:

The application or DLL C:\windows\system32\uxtheme.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

After clicking on the OK button a few times (three or four), the error window stops appearing. No icons appear on the desktop, but the desktop image is there. There is no taskbar, no start menu, etc.

Manually running Explorer (Ctrl-Alt-Del -> Task Manager -> File -> Run -> explorer) generates the error message a few more times (three or four).

Manually running CMD works fine. I was able to navigate around in the command window and run apps manually. The error messages come up at least three times for every app run.

Anyone have a fix for this? A good uxtheme.dll file perhaps?

Answer:[SOLVED] the application or DL C:\windows\system32\uxtheme.dll is not a valid windows

I found a good one on 'DLL-FILES.com'. It's a ZIP - Direct download from HERE

Hope this helps!

The Application or DLL C:\WIndows\System32\beyofaji.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

Not sure what this is, doesn't look like a default system DLL to me. When I go to the system32 folder, beyofaji.dll isn't even there.

I get this error message when I try to start ANY PROCESS. Notepad, calculator, internet explorer, various games, windows mediaplayer... doesn't matter. Apparently any process. It doesn't stop me from using the processes but this message is getting very annoying.

Virus maybe? Anyone recognize it or know how I can get rid of it?

Hello everyone,

First post here & I'm hoping someone can advise me on getting rid of a virus my PC picked up a couple of weeks ago.

The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\msible.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette appears on my computer repeatedly on start up & very often when I open something new.

Other odd things are also happening - AVG warnings pop up pretty frequently telling me a threat has been blocked, if it's left inactive for about 10 minutes or so the desk top icons all disappear & usually will not reappear, it frequently freezes for minutes at a time, clicking on links occasionally ends somewhere completely different to where I should go, occasionally new windows tabs with some oddball search engine open on their own, sometimes it won't shut down & we end up just flicking the wall switch, sometimes it will not start properly & all that can be seen is a black screen.

AVG free, Malwarebytes, SuperAnti Spyware & STOPzilla have been run many, many times & though they each claim to find something & kill it it just keeps coming back.

I've run HijackThis & D.D.S. The log for HJT is below, D.D.S. doesn't appear to want to run & I don't know if I have script blocker running or how to turn it off, I didn't try to run GMER because, again, I'm a computer idiot & don't know if I have a 32 or 64 bit system.

I'd be HUGELY ... Read more

Good morning,

I am not sure what kind of infection this is. I am getting some popups.

Quickset.exe ? Bad Image
The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\ACTIVEDS.DLL is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

I get the message above when windows starts up. The computer won?t pull an IP and when I go to the command prompt and type any ipconfig command I get the same message. But the title bar says ipconfig.exe ? Bad Image ( instead of quickset.exe ? Bad Image) McAfee did not find anything but with no ip I could not be sure I had the most up-to-date definitions. I used a Jump drive to get the DDS and the gmer files and reports back and for the from that computer to one that I can be online with.

Could not turn on windows fire wall
I get a popup
windows firewall settings can not be displayed because the associated service is not running. do you want to start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ICS)services.
when I click yes i get a pop up that says
Windows cannot start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ICS)services
the speed of the computer has also been slowed significantly.

below and attached are the requested logs
Thanks for the help

Unlike other servers that I have setup in this company use FileZilla Server, this server was setup by someone else and configured to use IIS-based FTP. I have little to no experience or knowledge on the workings of FTP through IIS. Any ideas?

Answer:Help troubleshooting Windows IIS-based FTP

Can you or anyone else login to the server through FTP? Check event logs and whatnot to make sure it's not permissions related (assuming it's not). Check the filesystem that is hosting the ftproot to make sure it's accessible both through ftp and through the OS. Maybe the drive is full or dead? Corrupt filesystem? Lots of things could be the problem. What all have you tried or checked?

Microsoft said to Invest $3.5 Billion in Research in Motion | N4BB - News for BlackBerry

There isn't too much that RIM holds that is of use to Microsoft. There is Mobile Fusion (replacement to BIS), which supports iOS and Android and could theorectically link to Windows Phone (and by extension Windows on ARM) and could replace Domain, but I don't think that is enough for investing over half of RIM's current market cap.

However, RIM owns QNX.
I could go into the technobabble, but basically QNX is an OS designed for very high reliability, security, and responsiveness.

In Windows 8, Metro applications are "sandboxed," meaning there is a clear layer of separation between the application and the OS. This is how the same applications will work on Windows on ARM, and also allows for something else:

If Microsoft was to rebuild Windows on top of QNX, they would be able to take advantage of all of the capabilities of QNX, while still being able to run Metro applications flawlessly. Legacy support could be maintained by turning Desktop into a self-contained virtual machine, sort of like "XP mode"

thoughts?

Answer:[theory] Windows 9+ to be based on QNX?

More likely based on/around Projects Singularity and Midori

Can anyone recommend a server. We are looking at setting up a dictation system. Three dictation stations all writing to the server. The files would all be word or word perfect and this is all it would be used for. The only thing it would really need is redundancy for security reasons. A raid system and some sort of way to back it up.
Thanks in advance,

I am trying to export or somehow transfer customer history from an old DOS program called CMS (Contractor Management Systems) into a new business software (As yet to be decided). Any suggestions on how to do so without hiring someone to do time consuming data re-entry? I have been told to re-enter all the data into EXCEL because then that should import easily into the new software. The problem is that we have customer histories that go back twenty years and that includes every service we have provided over the years. Is there a fast way to export the DOS programs data in to EXCEL or will we have to have someone manually re-enter the data into EXCEL?

Answer:DOS based data to Windows 7

Will the old CMS program export to any type of file such as text (.txt) or CSV (.CSV), or any other?  Excel can import a variety of file types.

I'm as guilty as they come in saying that Windows 7 as the general feel of Vista, however it is in fact the other way round. Let me explain...

Windows codename Blackcomb was supposed to succeed Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. A major feature planned for Blackcomb was an advanced storage system called WinFS. Blackcomb was put hold whilst an interim build "Longhorn" was announced for 2003. Longhorn acquired some of the features originally intended for Blackcomb. But after three major viruses; SOBIG, BLASTER & SASSER exploited flaws in Windows operating systems during the same period, Microsoft was forced to put both development of Blackcomb on hold to develop new service packs for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Development of Longhorn (Windows Vista) was also "reset", or delayed in August 2004. By this time development of Vista was already behind and to prevent further delays a number of features were cut from Longhorn.

In 2006 codename Blackcomb was renamed Vienna then again in 2007 it was renamed Windows 7 in 2007. In 2008 Windows 7 was adopted as the official name for the operating system.

In all irony a number of capabilities and certain programs that made up Windows Vista have been changed or removed in Windows Seven taking away some of it's functionality. Such notable features include the classic 'Start Menu' UI, 'Windows Ultimate Extras' (altho a patch exists to enable 'Dreamscenes'), 'Inkball' and 'Windows Calendars'. Another thr... Read more

Answer:Vista was based on Windows 7

This is common logic. Everybody (by now) knows that Vista was just a rushed, early version of W7, released just to make a little cash.

I wrote a program for my personal use in Visual Studio 2013 and am trying to get it to run without Windows SmartScreen popping up every time I run the executable.

I've been searching for about two hours now and have tried a number of different methods, including unblocking the file in PowerShell, editing permissions for the extension in Group Policy Editor, changing registry entries and several others.

I'm starting to wonder if the only possible way to do this is to purchase a certificate, which I don't really want to do for a simple, personal project like this. It's not like I'll be distributing the thing. There's got to be some work-around to this...

Answer:Prevent Windows SmartScreen from blocking application in Windows 10

You don't need to purchase a certificate. You can sign it yourself then put that self made cert in trusted within the certificate store on your computer.

I have Windows XP. I had to reboot my computer using the CD and I somehow reinstalled using the recovery disk. The problem I am now having is that I cannot get windows media player 10 to open. I have gotten several error messages. The first is Internal Application Error=80004001. I am also getting an error that states 0xc0000005 @)0x2515CF1E. I went to the microsft web site and it is advising that I may have a registery problem. I checked. regsvr32 jscript.dll and it says it was okay. I checked regsvr32 vbscript.dll and got a message that "Loadlibrary failed - The specified module could not be found." Microsft says to correct the problem, I should got to start, run, type in misconfing in open box, click expand file, and type the name of the file I want to restore (which I assume is regsvr32 vbscript.dll). Up to this point, I am ok. I just don't understand the next set of instructions which sates "in the file restore box, tyne the name of the file I want to restore and in the file restore box, type the path of the widows xp. cab where to restore the file or click Browse to the locate the Windows XP .cab file." It also notes that Windows XP .cab file are stored in the I386 folder of Windows XP. What does this mean? Can you break it down real simple for me? Is the internal application problem for the player really a registery problem? I have been trying to figure out what to do about ten hours. Please help. Thanks.

Earlier I was attempting to install AutoCAD 2010 on my old machine, all the install options were grayed out. I found out that it might be a bad registry value, so I attempted a regedit, and came up with an error. I ran regedit and this came up...

I then checked to see if regedit and the .dll file were in my system32 folder. Funny that the clb.dll is 0kb??

Next I ran 'sfc /scannow' to check my system files, came up with no errors.

I then ran a full virus scan and malwarebytes scan, and came up with 0 issues.

Any ideas?

Windows 10 Pro Getting Windows Defender Application Guard Security Feature

Microsoft keeps working on making Windows 10 a more secure operating system for everyone, and as part of the upcoming Redstone 4 update, the company will bring the enterprise-exclusive Windows Defender Application Guard (WDAG) to the Pro SKU as well.

The first build to bring this change is 17063 which was released a few hours ago, with Windows Defender Application Guard to become available for everyone once the RTM build of the OS update ships in the spring of 2018.

WDAG is a feature that protects computers against targeted threats using Hyper-V virtualization technology, and Microsoft says that thanks to this new technology, Edge becomes ?the world?s most secure browser.? An in-depth look at what WDAG can do on a Windows 10 computer was provided by Chas Jeffries, Lead Program Manager, Windows Enterprise and Security, at Microsoft Ignite earlier this year, and you can watch the presentation in full at the end of the article.

Based on user feedback
The software giant says this particular improvement is based on user feedback, revealing that many Windows 10 Pro adopters requested WDAG to be released to this SKU as well.

I have a user who had multiple infections (including System Tool), cleaned using the BC walkthrough. Everything is working well except when he opens an email in Lotus Notes from someone outside our network, he sees the following error message:The application or dll C:\windows\msv1_0 is not a valid windows image. He can click OK to proceed, and that is how he's been getting along, but it's annoying and I would like to know how to resolve it.I was going to reinstall Lotus Notes, but then he received the same error when attempting to update a program from a CD. The update he was performing in no way affects Lotus Notes, so I believe the issue would not be fixed with a LN reinstallation.I do not have the computer in house, but I do have remote access.PC in question is a Dell E6400, running Windows XP Pro SP3, fully patched.I have tried sfc /scannow and scanned with multiple programs like MBAM, SAS, nothing invasive.Everything I can find online points to a remant of a infection, any guidance on how to proceed?Thank you!

Access is in explorer? DO you mean you open explorer and navigate to C:|user|your user name?
You dont access properties from users and chose your admin profile. You log on AS ADMIN.

You dont change network settings to share you change HD files and folders.

Hi,

I have a computer in my office, and my laptop at home.

I want to be able to access resources at my office when I'm at home.
Both computers are Windows 8.1 based, and in both, I'm the Admin.

I've successfully created a VPN connection. I've configured my office router to allow PPTP 1793 port connections.

I've configured the Office computer as the VPN server, and successfully connected to it when I was at home.
I am alos able to ping that computer.

I was expecting to see the office computer as part of the network , but unfortunately I can't get to see that computer when I'm at home.
I need to connect to it in order to transfer/access files.

I was searching the web for solution. I've found a possible solution, which didn't help me - to set Network to be Private, in Windows settings via registry or network policy, but that didn't help.

How can I access the files on my office computer, when I am at home?

Thanks!
Amir.

We were using a program by Symantec called WinFax Pro 10.0 to fax with on an older XP SP1 machine. Well, we replaced the computer, and the new one's got XP SP2 on it. The program won't install, and it seems a common problem, as I have used google to try and find an answer. We'd like to have something on the computer that can fax, but not anything that's going to charge a monthly fee or something of that nature..

Also, a vendor of ours uses a program that sends email to fax machines. I'd be interested in something like that.

Let me know what you've got.

Thanks!
