Power Surge detected upon reset, windows 7 only starts up in Safe Mode

Question: Power Surge detected upon reset, windows 7 only starts up in Safe Mode

So about an hour ago my computer decided to crap out on my, when on reset my ASUS informed me that there was a power surge and was prevented. But now all I can do is access my OS via Safe Mode even if I choose to "Start Windows Normally". If I do it simply forces it into Safe Mode again. I'm at a complete loss if this is a software problem (I'm hoping so). Or if my motherboard or something else internally has been compromised or damaged when said surge happened.

Any thoughts on this or possible solutions?

Preferred Solution: Power Surge detected upon reset, windows 7 only starts up in Safe Mode

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try unplugging the PC from the mains power for a minute or two. Also try loading defaults in BIOS.
Option 3 - Step 6 - Safe Mode

Hi there,

Windows XP keeps hanging on the load up page when i choose to start it normally, without any error messages given.

I tried all the other option on the F8 screen, it only loads successfully on safe mode with networking and safe mode with command prompt.

I also tried system restore, but it didnt do any good.

Your help would be highly appreciated.

I just reloaded windows and when it gets to the windows screen it stays there for about 4 or 5 seconds and seems to lose the connection and the monitor goes blank. But when I load it in safe mode it finishes loading. Obviously I can't just load windows in safe mode. It did this when I first loaded windows so I reloaded windows again and it does the same thing. Is there something in BIOS I can change or what else could it be.

Hi, guys. Here is the problem I'm having, along with an explanation of how I got to this point:I'm on Windows XP Home, SP3.I seemed to have been attacked by a virus that got into my explorer.exe file. Evidently my anti-malware program deleted explorer.exe to prevent the virus from doing damage. This of course, had negative consequences. Thus, I couldn't log in properly (which was bad), but my data was still intact (which was good).Nothing seemed to get explorer.exe back, so I repaired Windows XP through the boot CD options. This brought me back to SP2 (along with resetting tons of other stuff, like reverting IE back to IE6). Programs and data remained intact. At this point, although I had explorer.exe back, and I could boot up and log in, I was only able to do so in safe mode (or in safe mode with networking, which is why I have internet access). When the system tries to boot up normally, it gives the following error:STOP: 0x0000007E(0xC0000005, 0xF7310184, 0xF7AC9D44, 0xF7AC9A40)Above the error message there are some generic instructions and possible causes described. I can write those down if necessary, and post them here, but they seemed somewhat generic.I've done the following to try to fix the problem:Disabled all startup items.Disabled all services.Set BIOS options to defaults (this was one setting I changed in the BIOS options, to restore the settings to default as per the instructions from a friend)Updated drivers for any errors occurring in device man... First of all I can feel how frustrating it would be in this situation. But not to worry, can you check the msconfig screen if it has a boot tab. If yes click on that and check if the safeboot option is checked, if checked please uncheck that. Please give me an update about it.

My pc was packed away after the hurricanes of 2004. Today I unpacked it, turned it on but found it wiill only start in safe mode. I am using windows 98, second edition.

Answer:Windows 98 starts in safe mode only

Does it say "Safe Mode" in all four corners or does it just look like Safe Mode because the display is low quality?

If it says Safe Mode in all four corners, the easiest thing to check first is the inside of the computer. Something may have worked loose during the packing and unpacking. Turn the computer off, unplug it, open the case and make sure all plugs are firmly seated in their ports and all cards are firmly seated in their slots. There are usually a few extra plugs from the power supply so don't worry about them.

If it doesn't say Safe Mode in the corners of the screen, see if it will let you change the screen resolution and color depth in Control Panel>Display>Settings tab. If they can't be changed, reinstall the video drivers.

I had this problem once before and I managed to solve it but I dont remember how. I think its related to my video card drivers. In normal mode I cant get past the black screen with the colored windows logo. It gets stuck there, then I hear a weird sound coming from my computer and the screen goes away with my monitor telling me there is no signal coming in despite my computer is still turned on. So I tried in safe mode and turns on normally. The last thing I did before this issue was to update iTunes but I dont really think its related. How can I fix it? My video card is nVidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti.

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Windows only starts in safe mode

Does your motherboard have built-in video too? Maybe you need to check the BIOS settings and see if it is setup to boot into on-board video first, then PCIe second.

Hi all,

I have an Asus X72J series running windows 7 64-bit. To make it simple, windows doesn't manage to boot normally, but it works if I start it in safe mode. I would like to know if there is any tutorial which proposes step by step processes in order to locate the source of the problem.

I have alreay run startup repair 5 times with restarts between each, and it ended up it could not resolve my problem.

- I have not installed any software before having this trouble
- I have not installed any new peripheral or driver
- I checked the memory and HDD and both are fine
- My guess is that there is a driver or hardware compatibility problem somewhere, since the trouble appeared after a long time passed in hibernation (extended stand-by mode) in which I unplug the computer, and this is ot the first time my WIndows has some troubles after this.

I thank you in advance.

Answer:Windows only starts in safe mode

Does the machine boot right into safe mode by itself? or does it go to the Safe Mode Screen?

If it goes right into Safe Mode without giving you the chance to make choices, try to force your own by re-starting, then tapping F8 or what ever key you need, some machines use the Delete or F12 key.

When you get to the screen, use the down arrow key to choose "Boot from last known good Configuration" touch Enter or Return, and see if that helps.

If the machine already goes to that screen select "Last known Good Configuration", and reboot.

2.) Check msconfig. Type/copy/paste msconfig into the Search or Run box (preferred) select General Tab make sure Normal Startup is selected. Then go to Boot Tab, and make sure Safe Boot is not selected.

3.) Try a System Restore

First of all, hi everybody !
And thanks in advance for the help you'll give me for handling my problem !

I've used to put windows in safe mode to check the background of windows for problems. I'm no expert. But i think windows has its problems and the antiviruses also...

So last weekend, i've put windows in safe mode to do my checkup with ad aware and panda antivirus...

I think i also did ngt register checkup... and another one to speed up and 'repair' the registry

Then my computer didn't want to get out of safe mode...

As i've tried and tried again to put it back to normal, i finally was able to bypass something and i'm now in diagnostic mode but i'm not sure...

But in safe mode we can't use internet and now i can...

But when i boot up, the parameters for the screen are different and i have to adjust it everytime i boot the computer.

So i don't know if it's a virus or if it's really me who really messed up with my computer...

If it's a virus, we'll find a way to erase it.

If it's me who messed up... Well i think i'll have to change some line in the registry for the boot up of the system... But how and witch line that's the problem...

And i promise i won't do the same mistake again !
I'll do some others but not the same one !!!

Merci beaucoup !
Thank you very much !

Answer:Windows starts on safe mode ...

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Since you can get into Safe Mode, run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized) (Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

In all likelihood you will be prompted to insert the Windows XP CD.

Thank you in advance for your help.

History: Started off with an Vaio XP SP1 laptop with an expired Avast on it.
Windows updates installed a number of files and rebooted.
Then unable to reboot in normal mode, only safe mode.
SUPERAntiSpware was unable to install in Safe mode. Kept going and then Combofix seemed to sort the problem.
I can now start in normal mode.
When windows loads the System Configuration Utility box pops up and says it is currently in Diagnostic or Selective StartUp mode. I am a bit scared to choose the Normal startup mode in case it undoes any of the Combofix's fixes.
Also, now Windows Security Centre has disappeared.
I have attached the logs. Thank you.

Answer:windows only starts in safe mode

UPDATE so far: I have now been able to run SUPERAntiSpyware. I have attached the log. It found 2 problems.

I am still having problems with the windows security centre.
The error log has:

Event ID: 7000
The wscsvc service failed to start due to the following error.
The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service.

Thank you.

hello, the problem i'm having is my computer wont start in the normal mode. it only starts in safe mode and safe with networking. it was working like normal just this morning. i just loaded a site im on every single day and suddenly a windows virus scan poped up out of no where, i have never seen this virus scanner before because i use bitdefender. so me being the noob i am, closed it thinking it was going to cause more harm then good. it wouldnt close and things were going bonkers so i just tried rebooting my computer. when i tried rebooting it wouldnt let me boot normaly the windows xp logo would pop up and quickly show a blue screen that disappears to fast to read. it restarts and go's to the black screen with the safe mode options. i'm not sure whats wrong but i suspected a virus, but since i cant use my bitdefender in safe mode i resorted to an online bitdefender scan. and it did pick up and delete a couple of trojens. but it's still not working. ive been reading simular post all day. i've tried many of the things that have help other people in simular situations. like the online scan and uninstalling my video card drivers but nothings working. and i cant seem to find anywhere that will let me do a malware scan. i just had a baby girl and i really cant afford to take my computer to a shop. and i really dont want to format and lose everything. i know i'm a noob but if someone could please help me i would be soo grateful.

Answer:windows only starts in safe mode please help me :(

Hi- I have looked through threads and used some of the suggestions such as removing brastk.exe, but still can't start up normally. This began with numerous dll error messages such as "C:\WINDOWS\system32\msansspc.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."
After that the PC crashed and would only start in safe mode.

hello and welcome to BleepingComputer,,
this is reminiscent of BIOS settings that need to be reset to default. you can do this by using that option in BIOS. do you see the option there?
if this pattern exists after BIOS reset, then there are other XP level options to try like console command /sfc scannow and chkdsk /r
not to long ago, i was dealing with a PC that was doing this same thing, and it was the hard drive (SATA) protocol setting in BIOS, it had to be set to IDE.
one more thing, this could be blue screen error that isn't halting, just looping boot. is there an option at the boot screen (the one with the safe mode options) about halting on errors?

Recently I received an email with the subject "You've received a greeting card". I clicked the attached link, downloaded the e-card.exe and clicked to ran it. After clicking the e-card.exe, blue error screen of Windows (XP) appeared and it restarted. I logged on again and after about a minute, blue error screen appeared and it restarted again. I now can only ran Windows in Safe Mode. I have Window XP Professional Version 2002 with SP2 on my laptop.
I found this site and followed the steps mentioned in "READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide". I could not install SUPERAntiSpyware, Windows Installer message saying "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." appears. But I ran other programs: SpyBot, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, ComboFix, and MGtools. Attached you find the logs created by these programs. If you can help me I will really appreciate.
Thanks & regards,

Not much left to do.....

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

* Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!

My problems started yesterday when my laptop just started restarting with the blue screen saying there was a problem. It would reboot about 4/5 times then go to troubleshooting options. I posted a messge last week about my computer only staring in safe made, you asked that I get a list of the errors in the event ziewer so here goes. As I mentioned I can only get the pc to boot in safe mode.

I checked everywhere I was suppose to. There was 1 error under the application tab and many under the system tab. I have done the best I can to try to relay these to you. And I aprreciat any help you can give me.

The first error, under application was this" content index on c;/system volume information/catalog.wci could not be initialized 3221225628.

Now under the application menu I have many but the first was this.
system start or drivers failed to load AFD, FIPS, INTELPPM,IPSEC, MRXSMB, NETBIOS, NETBT, RASACD, RDBSS, TCPIP, WS21FSL.

another error was DHCP client services depend on the SYMTDI service witch failed to start. The dependency or group failed to start.

TCP/IP ptotocol driver failed to start

and the last one I could find was.. /device/harddisk0/d. has a bad block.
So this is what I was able to find. I really hope this is what you were asking for. Just so you know there were no other errors other than on the date in witch this happened. Thanks for taking the time to read this, I look forward to hearng from you.

Hi, recently (after a 'critical' update) turning my Laptop on on the startup screen before you enter your password the cursor spins and doesn't show the log in box, it then proceeds to flash continuously (blue and black, not bsod) while not letting me do anything.

I can start the machine up in Safe Mode, but it's now stopped connecting to the internet in safe mode with networking.

I'm running Windows 7 Home x64bit and I'm on a Dell Studio XPS.

I can't system restore and I don't know where my windows boot disk is. (Any idea where I can get another without having to shell out...?)

Cheers for the help.

Answer:Windows 7 crashing on start up! Only starts up in Safe Mode

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.
Please attach the DMP files to your next post not to post one.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

On a nice morning, 2 day back I got a message from the system tray (after system comes off from night sleep) that " USB mass storagedevice has exceeded the power limits of its hub port". After I close the window (in a hurry), I could not able to activate that port, but power is coming to the ext. device if attached but not recognised by the system. The port next to it, is working fine.
My dell phone support system could not solve the problem, now his engineer will make a visit, don't know what he will do.
Clue: One interesting thing i have found under universal serial bus controller, that one drive named "USB Mass storage device " always remains at present, however, if I attach the external device to left USB port, another "USB Mass storage device " drive is created and is removed when I detach it. But this is not the case for the faulty one.
Request: How can I reset my faulty port to come back active. please help,

Best Regards

Answer:Reset of USB port after probable power surge

Try this, shut down the PC, unplug the power cord for the power supply from the wall outlet. Now press the power on button on your case and hold it for a couple of seconds. The power Led should lite up briefly and then fad out. Now plug the power cord back in and power up normally. With a little luck the USB port will be working again. I've gotten that same message on my PC and the above procedure fixed it for me.

Hello,First off, thank you very much in advance for reading this and trying to help.PROBLEM: HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop with a relatively new Windows 7 OS on it crashes every time I try to reboot. The computer only starts in safe mode. Safe mode works normally, except there is no sound.ABNORMALITY prior to first crash: The computer started producing an annoying beeping sound. I turned the sound off and forgot about it for a bit. After a few hours the first crash occurred. Still no sound on computer. Thanks bunches again!Elena

That laptop barely...just barely meets the Specs for Win7...unless you have added RAM to it.We will need to know what the beeps are as that points to a hardware glitch of some sort...

So my laptop only starts up in safe mode and when I try to access it through normal startup, a blue screen appears for a short amount of time and then attempts to startup again going on and on in a never ending cycle.

However, I got it running on safe mode and ran Malwaebytes Anti-Malware on safe mode (with networking). However, it didn't pick up anything wrong. What can I do to fix this???

I am having an issue where my computer will start fine in normal mode, but if I try to go into safe mode, it goes into startup repair mode.

Windows 7 Home 64bit, Lenovo desktop. Webroot Secureanywhere.

A little bit of background: OPENVPN was giving me a lot of messages like, "TCP: connect to [AF_INET] failed, will try again in 5 seconds: The system tried to join a drive to a directory on a joined drive". Contacted my VPN provider regarding this, they questioned where that IP address was coming from because it was not theirs. The IP address is this message would sometimes change, but according to WHOIS all were registred to:

OrgName: RIPE Network Coordination Centre
Address: P.O. Box 10096
City: Amsterdam

I have no idea personally who this is. Ran the widely accepted malware scanners (Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Rkill, Adwcleaner, Combofix "feel free to scold me...", and I think some rootkit scanners) found Somoto PUP, which I seem to have removed. OPENVPN ceased giving me the "system tried to join a drive" messages.

I want to run Malwarebytes in safe mode to make sure the infections are gone, but every time I F8 and select SAFE MODE or SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING, the computer goes into STARTUP REPAIR mode. I have not selected the RESTORE option, but selecting the REPAIR option just results in the computer hanging and I have to force power off the computer.

A family member has come to me requesting help with a computer problem. Unfortunately, as she lives a few states away, I can't just pop in there to help. As of a few days ago, whenever she tries booting up her Windows Vista PC (an off-the-shelf HP desktop), she is greeted with the following screen:If the image doesn't show, it's a screen that shows an icon of a padlock, the words/logo "Windows Password-Reset", and a box that says:"Choose the userChoose the user whosepassword you want to reset:AdministratorGuestMy Relative's UsernameOkReboot"I was told that her account/username doesn't have a password, and that if she clicks on "Ok" she's prompted for some sort of authorization key. Choosing to reboot takes her back to that screen and she's not able to get to the OS.I tried directing her to get into safe mode via the F8 key, but she claims she can't; this screen pops up immediately as soon as she resets the computer or turns it on.Any ideas of what to do and where to start with this one? Thanks in advance.

But it works fine with safe mode and safe mode with networking?? What could be the problem??

Answer:starts on safe mode but not on normal mode

As always, I recommend running a full scan with your installed antivirus suite. Then run a second or third on-demand scanner like Malwarebyes, Hitman Pro, Windows Offline Defender, etc just in case your installed suite missed something.

If this problem just began with a couple of days ago you could try using a restore point to return your computer to a date/time prior to the problem starting.

System Restore

You could also try doing a clean startup (AKA clean boot) to troubleshoot apps and services that may be causing the issue.

OS : WIndows XP SP3
My computer (actually on loan from my mother in law!) is taking ages to start and when it does, it is very slow to respond and even freezes. Eventually an Avast alert pops up and tells me it detected a rootkit called "Catchme". I didn't try to delete it, I don't know if I should have or even if Avast was right.
The PC was already slow when I first got it. I ran Malwarebytes before and it found a trojan.agent that was apparently deleted. I also ran JRT that found bad things too (tell me if you need the log).
When I run in Safe mode, the PC seems OK, more responsive.
Anyone to help me?
Thank you.

Answer:PC slow in normal mode, OK in safe mode, Catchme rootkit detected by Avast?

I turned PC on this morning, it was still very slow to start, but the Avast message about the rootkit didn't come up this time! PC was still slow to respond though.
I decided to run AdwCleaner (saved on to USB key from my laptop and copied then on to the PC) just to see and it found 9 "bad" registry keys. I cleaned them and restarted the PC as prompted. PC seems a bit faster to repond now. I also ran Malwarebytes (quick scan) which didn't find anything.
Still think something is not right, can somebody help me check for rootkit or anything else please? Thank you

I have a very enthusiastic wife who kindly took a damp cloth and vigorously rubbed my keyboard over to clean it, WHILE THE SYSTEM WAS RUNNING.
Once I wiped my eyes of saline solution I found loads of problems. It took me some considerable time to actually get the sytem to boot. Boot manager not found on startup but doing a repair mode startup I can now gain access.
Problem is that as soon as the desktop is loaded it goes to an immediate "Explorer.exe not working" notification with ntdll.exe as the fault problem.

I've made loads of searches and carried out countless potential solutions for this and I'm still not much further forwards.
I would just do a system update from a disc to put all my drivers and operating sytem stuff back in place however it won't allow me as the explorer.exe problem locks the system so nothing will start up or run.
Going into Safe mode is still much the same. I can at least browse and find the contents of the hard drive but can't run any programme or install any other software to troubleshoot the problem.
I've tried all the usual, ie system restore etc and even copied some backup opertaing files from a command prompt before the system starts up which did give me some speed gain at startup but it hasn't resolved the main problem.
Most solutions seem to suggest doing something that involves an operating system that actually starts and allows things to run.
Mine doesn't allow anything, or at least nowhere near enough although some few things ... Read more

Answer:Nothing starts: Safe Mode can't help me

Please run the first 3 free diagnostics listed here: Hardware Diags
They are bootable, so that will be easier than trying to do anything in Windows.
Please start with the bootable antivirus stuff, as that's what this description reminds me of.

You can install another copy of Win7 on another drive.
First, make sure you scan for viruses.
Then be careful that you don't overwrite anything that you want to save from the old installation.

I'm not familiar with the Inland Revenue stuff, but most programs have data files to store the data. So you can install another copy of the Inland Revenue program and then use the data file from the old program. I'd suggest posting for help in the General forums for assistance with the Inland Revenue program.

I have had our computer unplugged for about 2 weeks fixing my bro-in-laws computer. I plugged it in last night and when it boots up, it will ONLY start in safe mode. I tried to do the start normally and tried restarting to last known working condition. Then I tried restoring clear back to the end of November, (it was working fine) and when it gets done and restarts, it goes right back to the safe mode screen.

So, now that I am in safe mode, it wont go on the internet. I checked my network connections and everthing is entered ok (ip address, subnet, gateway, etc.) But it still wont connect.

I am at my witts end. I usually can fix things, but this has gotten me totally baffled. SOMETHING happened, but I cant figure it out.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.....!!!!!!

Gateway computer with Windows Vista. Only starts in safe mode (manually by F8). I've tried System Restore from midnight this morning (windows updated at 3am afterwards so I picked the one prior) and I've tried to let it attempt to fix itself with no luck. Gets to the Microsoft inc screen with the green sliding bar in the middle, that goes away and then just a blank screen until I do a cold restart, repeat.
This has happened before when the power went out in my house. Had a computer guy come to my house and he fixed. He said I should be able to fix on my own if it happens again and gave me the command to fix it. Of course I lost that receipt with it on it. He did say my computer was loaded with errors and corruption and that I should backup my files asap BC it was only matter of time before computer is done for.
Any help please?

Morning, All! I am new here and really need some help.

I have a major problem with pc. It is an HP pavlion 523. I did install a new hard drive a couple of years ago with success and it has been running great until recently.
DBF took it to do some research. I updated all the antivirus software, security updates, etc. He has not a clue how to do anything except surf the web. He was doing some web-surfing, (places he should NOT have been) and ended up with a virus. Tells me the next day that a window popped up from AVG and he just closed it. Never disinfected the file, quarintined ..NOTHING!

Now the machine will not boot up except in safe mode. I get the XP logo with the blue bar that sits for hours. I ran Windows Live One Care safety scan and it detected 2 viruses and one trojan, but it would not remove them. I tried to do a system restore back to a couple of weeks ago and it just locks up. I am running Windows Malicious Software removal right now to see if that helps, but for some reason I don't think it will.
Also tried to run other spware removal and the programs will not open or install.

How can I get this issue resolved? This is my DD14 pc and she has pics and things on there she wants saved. That's another issue, I can't backup files---the disc writer tray will not come out to even put a cd into.

What's a girl to do? Can anyone help with my issues?
thanks in advance.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
TDSSserv Non-Plug & Play Driver Disable

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:
If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. I have an old Windows XP that I am letting the kids use for school and such. It suddenly started having an issue. It would start up but as it got to the Windows page with the bar running on it, it would then go to the "Windows Failed to start properly" page. It would then continue to do this until I changed it to safe mode.

At first I thought it was a virus. I have ran 3 antivirus scans (McAfee, Kaspersky, and Avast!) and found nothing. I attempted to run Windows Update but was getting a message that it could not be run. I tried using the Windows Fix-It but was getting a message that I needed Service pack 3 and .Net Framework 2.0 or above. I looked at my computer and it said it had Service pack 3. I looked in the add/remove programs and it shows SP3 but there is no way to modify it or remove it, would this mean it isn't really there? I attempted to install .Net Framework 2.0 but it would fail to download and the error message is saying it could not be opened.

I have run memory checks and scans of the system and am still not able to find what is wrong with it. I accidently did a system recovery and this did help for a short time but then when I tried updating windows it was right back to its same issues.

My computer is a HP Pavilion g1210n Media Center
Windows XP
AMD Athlon 64
2.19 GHz. 960 MB RAM

I would appreciate any help or suggestions.

Hi guys i hope someone can help me.

I started having problems with my pc like a month ago when for no reason will shut down itself only when i was playing video games.
I didnt pay much attention so i started playing ligher video games and it did work good for some days but eventually started shuting down with ligher games too...

The computer didnt really shut down but the screen crashed and went black but the PC was still running, i always had no choice but manually shut it down.

My friend told me to check the video card temperature and i did it was really high like 96 sometimes over 100... so thought that was the problem and i change it for a new one that was working with 29 to 40 temperature but the problem still did happen.

My friend format my computer for me but it didnt do anything, The computer still crashing and shuting down( Only the screen the PC still runs)

Now my pc wont start.. it only works on safe mode

Please can someone help me or atleast tell me what might be the problem.

Thank you in advance :)

Hey guys, i'm compltely stumped (along wiuth the people at Dell) I have an Inspiron 8500 Laptop running XP and the thing will ONLY start in safe mode. If I try and start it regulary it gets to the WINDOWS XP screen the goes black. I ahve tried reinstalling windows and that doesn't even fix the problem. However, as I said I CAN start the computer in SAFE MODE. What's causing this, and wha t can I do to fix this?? THanks for aLL the help!

Answer:Computer only Starts in Safe Mode

Unless I'm wrong, reinstalling Windows doesn't doesn't fix any problems in your MBR. It just uses the same MBR and reformats. I use the Ulitmate Boot Disk to zero any hard drives and go from there, and have had no problems. Other, more experienced members will probably jump in with more helpful suggestions.

I bought a gateway MS -2285 last year. Now i can only start my computer in safe mode. When i click on the option windoe start normally , it just gives me a blank screen.

I have tried to do system restore but it did not correct the problem. I really do not understand computers so please be patient if i have a lot of questions .

Answer:Computer only starts in safe mode

What color is the blank screen: white, gray, black or blue?

In safe mode, video drivers do not load so it could be the wrong video driver is loading and you might see a white or gray screen.

What version of windows are you running. We might be able to roll back the driver and get a display.

Really not sure where this needs to be posted and its a little long winded but i need to give as much background as possible.
I have posted this on other sites and since this is the place where I had a previous mystery problem solved I thought I test it out on you guys again. Here goes:

I originally posted a thread in a forum on a site called pcpitstop

I am hoping you guys are going to do better.

I have an

from what ive read there is a strong posibility it may be a dirver problem and in fact thats is how IntelGuy solved the one shown. However i dont know how to find out whats drivers i need for my specific computer.
What are my first steps? Please help me, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

My computer has been starting in fail safe mode. I have to hit F1 for it to continue to boot up. I'm thinking there is a simple fix. But what might that fix be?

Answer:PC starts in fail safe mode...

Any more details you can give? Does it say anything else on the screen?

Whenever I have seen computers say anything about pressing F1 to continue the boot process, it was a bios message alerting me that the system time was off (cmos battery was dead).

Hi all,I am new to this site and appreciate all the help you can give me.  I was attempting to remove some malware from my computer.  I restarted to safe mode, but when prompted for password, the correct password was not accepted.  I tried "administrator" with a blank password, but that did not work either.  What are my alternatives to logging back in to the computer.  Also, the computer only boots up in safe mode, so I am essentially locked out for the time being.  I have also tried to start windows normally through the F8 key to no avail. Thanks in advance!

Alright the specs for my computer are:
OS-Windows XP SP2
CPU Type-AMD Athlon XP, 1913 Mhz
Motherboard-ASUS A7N8X-E Delux
System Memory-512 MB
Video Card-Nvidia Geforce FX 5200
Hard Drive-152.7 GB 3 partitions

When the computer boots up it goes normally to the XP Screen with the black background and the blue dots that move across the screen under the XP symbol, before it reaches the accounts it flashes a blue page with white writing on it real fast and then restarts at the motherboards screen. Then it goes to the page where I can select: Safe-mode, Safe-mode with network, Safe-mode with command prompt, restart with last known good configuration. When the problem first showed up it was after I clicked on a link in AIM and got a virus and spy ware. I?ve gone through the spy ware specific forums and cleaned my computer up and so now I'm here, here?s the link for that forum:

- Okay so recently I have ran into a problem with my computer, and I'd like to get it fixed as soon as possible.

My problem is - When ever I start up my computer, it goes past the Dell loading screen, but shortly after it tells me I have a Floppy Diskette error, although I can press F1 to continue.

After I get past this problem, it goes through the Windows loading screen. My computer then makes a beeping noise, which I've discovered that it means it failed, and brings me to the booting screen.

The choices of..

- Safe Mode
- Safe Mode with Networking
- Safe Mode with Command Prompt

- Last Good Configuration
- Windows Normally

- Now I'm not able to get into my computer, unless I choose Safe Mode. Although clearly I'm lucky enough to be able to do Safe Mode with Networking, to ask for help. I've tried calling Dell, though my warranty has expired and I don't exactly want to pay.. this time of the year isn't best with money for my family.

And of course I've read other threads, with the same problem, but I've tried about everything I know how too. That being the use of virus scanners, such as AVG, Malwarebytes, and Avast!, along with attempt of System Restore, etc. I've considered trying to wipe my computer entirely, although I don't have the CD in order to do so.

Hello all,

Can anyone help? I had a power failure in my house, upon turning the computer on - i have a AMD Athlon 64 processor 3500+ 2.20GHz, 32 bit operating system with Windows 7 Ultimate - it came up with 'SIGNAL OVER RANGE!'.
I followed instructions to re-start in Safe Mode, and went into Device Manager and uninstalled Display Adaptor.
I have no idea if this fixed the first problem of Signal Over Range, and can now only access my computer in Safe Mode - even when clicking F8 and starting Windows normally, it automatically reverts to Safe Mode.

Can i reinstall the video driver? Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks

Answer:Computer only starts in safe mode!!!

When you are in safe mode, reset the display, through the control panel. Set the dimensions lower. I assume it is an LCD so the refresh rate will not have any effect; refresh is for CRT displays.

Since you did not mention the brand and model of computer, we have no idea if you are using a desktop, laptop or netbook. So we have no idea what video you have.

Hi, try System Restore from safe mode.
Start > Run > Type.

Click Launch System Restore.
Choose a date prior to the problem.
If that does not work.
In msconfig - under the Start Up Tab.
Untick all entries Except your Anti-Virus program.

Apply > Ok > Reboot your Pc.

The System Configuration Utility box appear on retstart - saying changes have been made.
Tick the box on the lower left and then OK.
Make no other changes while in msconfig.

What is the model number of your Acer Netbook?

I know that this has been fairly common problem but not quite to this extent I feel. About a month ago my computer started shutting itself down when it was booting in normal mode, I just restarted it a few times and eventually it would start up. I figured my power supply was beginning to go out. About a week ago the internet shut itself down in normal mode (I don't know if that?s unrelated or not). Yesterday the computer stopped working in normal mode altogether but works just fine in safe mode. I've tried system restore and replacing the power supply, as well a virus check with my mcafee program. Deleted drivers etc. I cannot figure out what to do. Any ideas on how to fix this would be much appreciated.

Answer:computer only starts in safe mode

Check your boot options, you computer might be set to boot into safemode automatically through an option in msconfig. Although system restore should reset that, at least one would think that it would. Have you ran a system file check yet?

Sorry my first post is asking for help.

I have an ASUS laptop, yesterday i left it alone for a few hours and i came back to a message saying "reselect boot device" i was able to get past that, im not sure how but i did. Now today if i try to run my laptop in regular start up it freezes about 5 minutes later and then goes to blue screen. I can run my laptop in safe mode and safe mode with networking fine. I do not have any restore points (wasnt aware that windows 7 didnt automatically create restore points) so i cant restore back to a previous version.

I can get a boot log and a cbs log if that will help.

I dont know if its a hardware problem (i dropped my laptop two days ago about a foot and a half and it landed flat, no dents or anything. it worked fine after that) or if its a virus problem. I recently downloaded a new album (same day i dropped my laptop) but it worked fine after that as well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Computer only starts in safe mode

1) Nothing to be sorry about - this is a support forum - your first post is supposed be a request for help.2) W7 DOES create restore points automatically, just like every other Windows version.3) I've never heard of that message before ("reselect boot device"). You saw that within the Windows environment?4) Download BlueScreenView: downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select AllGo to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txtOpen BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

In safe mode, everything is large and sort of fuzzy--as you can tell, I don't know what is pertinent for you to know???

I have a similar problem to another one that was posted here but since the other post was resolved, I'm not getting many responses and I would GREATLY appreciate some help.

I tried everything I know and have read. My computer (desktop, XP, SP3, AMD Athlon(tm) 64x2 Dual Core Proc, 3800+, 2.01 GHz, 448MB RAM) will not stay on. I can power it on in SafeMode (with or w/o networking) but nothing else, not even Last Known Good Configuration. If I try, it sometimes powers ON and gets as far as the Windows Logo but before fully loading, it powers OFF. I have tried the following - 1) opening it up and blowing all dust out, 2) System Restore, 3) uninstalling & reinstalling Device Driver (NVIDIA geForce), Error Checking and following all steps for startup initialization files or services problems. None of these have helped. I recently did a spyware scan, a disk scan and a defrag.

UPDATE: After numerous attempts, I am sometimes able to get into regular mode but it only stays on for 5 minutes. Any explanation for that? It is not overheating. I have the two side panels off, it is dust free and it is cool.

SECOND UPDATE: Someone said to run Error Checking again so I did but it obviously doesn't start until you reboot but now when I boot in Safe Mode it freezes at: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers/Mup.sys

Now I'm stuck again. Now I can only start in SafeMode when I tap the ENTER key a dozen times at the freezing point (mentioned above) bu... Read more

2 days ago my HP Pavillion dv-6 laptop got a blue screen. it flashed for a second and then my computer restarted. when it restarted, it started back in safe mode. i restarted it again and chose the "start windows normally" option. most of the threads i have seen say that they get a black screen, but mine will just boot up in safe mode. i restart it and click start normally and it boots in safe mode again. i have tried to take it back to a previous good configuration and that just started my computer in safe mode again. i tried to restore it and it started it in safe mode again. i tried rolling back the video driver (saw someone say on here that it could help) and that didnt do anything. i tried resetting the defaults on the bios and it didnt do anything.
on a different note, i have done the hard disk and memory tests on the bios page and i passed all of them. i dont use my laptop much for myself, but i do still need it for school so this is deffinatly a problem i need to be fixed as soon as someone has any ideas i haven't tried. im going to school for IT and have asked my teacher and he is stumped just like i am. the reason im saying this is so that you know i have been looking for a solution. any ideas would be helpful.
im running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit with 4 GB ram and a 560 GB hard drive. if that helps at all.

Answer:Computer only starts in Safe Mode

Only thing I can think of off the top of my head is to go to the "Search Programs and Files" on the Start Menu and type in MSCONFIG and hit return. On the window that appears, select the Boot tab and make sure under Boot Options the Safe Boot box is NOT checked. Problem is I am not 100% sure you can run the config console in Safe Mode

If you haven't already, you can also try another restore point from a command prompt. Boot the computer into "Safe Mode with Command Prompt." At the C: prompt type RSTRUI.EXE and hit return. Wait for the Restore module to start (it can take a while), then select another restore point from before the problem started. I've had this work when System restore through windows had failed . . . even when it failed in the GUI version of Safe Mode.

When i restarted my computer it would not boot up. It will only load up windows XP in safe mode. When trying to boot up not in safe mode the window XP logo shows on the screen then the screen goes black and stays black.

I am not sure if this should be a post on the HijackThis forum or not. Thanks for your help.

Answer:My computer only starts in Safe Mode

If you can get into safemode w/networking, Please reboot your computer and update Malwarebytes. This time do a FULL scan and post the new log here

I've been using Firefox for several years without problems.
But suddenly last Friday, I could not start the program.
Every time I try I get a crash report. When I click on details, it does not work.
When I click on restart I have to click 5 times before Firefox starts in safty-mode.
I think I have sent more than 20 auto-reports to Mozilla. But now answer.
I have read and done everything that Mozilla suggests.
I deleted Firefox with all add-ons and settings.
I download and did clean-install from USB drive
I've nearly run any ad / virus programs that exist.
But no.
