strange windows 7 update with no updates

Question: strange windows 7 update with no updates

nothing serious, just a strange little problem i've noticed recently.

when clicking the start menu, I always see the icon that says an update is required on shutdown, which i click. there is absolutely no indication that any update is taking place, and when I run update manually, there is nothing available. I've tried researching similar problems but everyone seems to say that there's an update that fails for whatever reason. I do not have this issue though which is why I can't understand what's happening.

any ideas?

Preferred Solution: strange windows 7 update with no updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Upon shutting down my laptop (Windows 7 SP 1) I was given the message that updates were being configured and to not shut off the computer. I found this strange as I have Windows Update set to have me choose when updates are downloaded and installed. I let it run and at the point where the updates were shown as 35% completed, it just hung there. I let it run for several minutes and it did not change. I shut off the computer using the power button.

I restarted the computer in safe mode and was quickly given a message to the effect update configuration had failed and things would be reverted. It stayed at this message for about 20 minutes and then a message indicating a cleanup was being done appeared. This lasted about 5 minutes or so and then it went to my sign in screen.

A message that I had windows updates available then appeared in the notification pane. There were 3 optional updates available, 2 for MSE which I no longer have on my computer and 1 for IE 11, which I have on my computer.

I uninstalled the IE 11 update on my computer and then tried to install the update. The installation failed twice. I then did a restore and got IE 11 back.

The update history on the Windows Update page shows the 2 failed installations of IE 11, which still appears as an available optional update, on 01/01/2015. However, the view installed updates in the Control Panel shows 44 Windows updates being installed on 01/01/2015.

Can anyone offer an opinion on... Read more

Answer:Strange events - failed update and installation of several updates.

I found I also have a problem with Turn Windows Features On and Off. Nothing appears in the box after opening it. From cursory research i found this may be related to the update issue.

I am downloaded the SURT and tried to run it twice. It hung for a long time and had to be closed via task manager. I see from this page that may have been normal.

I apologize for not following the instructions for posting. I wasn't really looking for a solution but some thoughts on what may have happened. Now I believe I have a corruption problem that will likely need to be fixed to allow me to update properly. I ran sfc /scannow and it didn't find any problems.

I am downloading a new SURT file and will run again. Should I start a new thread or post the results in this thread?

I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

Answer:Windows update stuck at Checking for updates and can't install updates manually

Now it doesn't even give the error anymore. It just sits there and fake-installing .Net Framework.

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... Background: I have my Dell 640m on automatic windows update. I have this strange problem which I have not found any mention of on the Net. I'm not sure when it actually happened but I noticed it only last week.

Problem:

Several of Microsoft's security programs are now in the Czech language!
Several of the security pop up messages are also in Czech!
Certain menu items are in Czech also!

I can assure you that my region setting is in English and I don't think this is a virus related issue.

It appears the main program that got "Czech" are:

1) Windows Security Center ( however the icon is still English)
2) Wireless Network Setup Wizard (Blank icon with Czech title, fully Czech)
3) Windows Firewall (Blank icon with Czech title, fully Czech)
4) Network Setup Wizard (Blank icon with Czech title, Czech on 1st double click but is the normal English version after clicking "> Next"
4) Bluetooth Devices (Normal Bluetooth icon with Czech title, fully Czech)

Several other programs has bits of Czech among English:

1) For example, in Add or Remove Programs, Czech spelling replaced the "Currently installed programs" and "Show update" checkbox items

2) Some of the menu items in Internet Explorer

This is a very strange problem and I cannot find any mention of it anywhere.

I wonder if uninstalling and reinstalling some of the Windows update might help but I don't know which one (there are quite a few). Windows update do... Read more

This girl on our floor is getting all of the symptoms of the good ole blaster worm and it's 1 minute to reboot issues. I figured I could just windows update until I fix it.
So I install the updates. They install fine, no errors, and windows update says they're installed. Reboot, the same updates are listed. Try once again, and again it says the same ones are listed after I reboot. So I try through automatic updates, and, once again, the same thing. The updates just aren't installing besides saying that they are installed.
I then download the stand-alone blaster worm patch. Run it, and right after I click "I Agree" and hit next, the window just closes, no errors or anything. Try again, same thing. Try in safe mode, same thing.
I've never had a problem with this before, does anyone have any recommendations?

Answer:Windows Update installs updates, but they're still listed under updates

I had the same thing on a system I was working on. I ran Spybot and Ad-aware and cleaned off so much crap... But I had to let Spybot start at reboot to catch the app-killer. Try that and see if you can get those updates to take. It may be some nastiness in the box. Umm, no pun intended.

I have a Dell Latitude E6510 that ran over 2013 updates and afterwards will not boot to the desktop. It will boot up and go to the automatic repair screen and cannot repair. I have tried everything I can think of and that I have found on Google. I have even restored it from the recovery partition (which this is a refurb computer), I did a clean wipe with a new Windows 7 Pro DVD and did a complete full clean install...I mean I deleted all partitions and started fresh. I installed SP1 and then it detected those 213 updates again...I had it install them and it went through and installed them again and then after reboot...same exact problem. It will boot up and go to the crash screen of repairing windows and cannot. The only option I have found that works is have to reinstall windows.

has anyone ran into this problem and did you ever find a fix?

Not sure if this is the correct section as Windows updates might not be the cause.

I installed the latest batch of updates for Win 7 64-bit. Not sure of the date they was released atm.

I let them install then straight away rebooted. But after boot the 'Starting Windows' screen doesnt appear and shows a few blue dots at the top left during the boot process.

It booted normal afterwards but i straight away rebooted, F8, Repair my computer and went to restore the system back to before the updates. Only to fail with an error code. So i tried restore further two weeks before and same error code.

I boot up after only to find my Norton anti virus is pretty much been uninstalled by its self.

Any ideas?

Answer:After windows updates, caused boot to act strange

Ive ran scans too only to find nothing. Ran Norton Liveupdate and it restored my anti-virus.

i upgraded from win 7 to win 10 in early august. no problems. i've been installing all updates since then and installed updates always showed status of updates. after installing fall update i noticed my update history was erased and any updates since, like defender definition files, don't appear in the list. only one update is listed: Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3103688) installed on 11/14/2015.

Answer:Windows 10 fall update erased the Windows Update history plus new installed updates don't appear. What do I do?

GOT DAMMIT! I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY!! ANY SOLNS?!
MY COMP CONFIG: Q6600 + 4GB + XFX512GT

Answer:Totally Strange - Vistax64 windows updates problem

By default in set up when you install you are asked to choose automatic updates as recommended. If you do this then you will get them downloading and installing. To change this go to Control panel, security centre, Updates change settings and choose the option from there. The best one is to download but not install so you check first. You can also uninstall updates, but going to updates checking what is installed and you are given the option at the top to uninstall . Warning you should always keep important updates as these are security updates, it is safe to uninstall recommended ones.

Hello,

My colleague at work had malwares infections on her computers at the begining of this week. MSE and Malwarebyte could remove "a lot" of them, and in fact both of them now see the PC as clean. In deed there were some typical malware's action in browsers that seem to be now gone (google links redirectionc, auto opening of IE while FF is the defaul browser and running, etc.)

But then there is this really strange "Windows Security" window that keeps appearing and blocking (without any choice) all updates for Adobe programs, and also AVIRA (preventing installation), and some more, and i find it really suspicious.

So my question is the following : is it a remaining malware that cannot be detected or just a problem with windows security parameters ? Because it sure does looks like a Windows window, but that doesn't mean it is one, and i find this behaviour really weird (ok with Windows that doesn't mean anything either ). It is also not connected to MSE, since disabeling it doesn't keep this window from appearing (same with windows firewall).

So i come here to ask for help from the pros to sort it out.

Here is a picture of this window (in Spanish, since the infected system is in spanish), when it blocked the update for PDF :

A rough translation would be (my spanish is weak) :

I would like to delete the failed updates list in Windows 7 Update.  I have done this in the past but forget exactly the process.

I think you go to Windows Folder-Software Distribution.  After deleting everyhting in the folder., i think you are to restart the computer.  Once finished the list of updates in Windows Update will be cleared.

Please correct if I am wrong.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer:Failed Updates in Windows Update. Want to clear update list?

This is the way I suggest :

Go to start > type in cmd > right click at cmd.exe > Run as Administrator.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" without quotes > hit enter.

Type in "start %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" without quotes > hit enter. A folder will come up. Don't close that black window.

Rename file "DataStore" to "DataStoreold" without quotes.

Go to that black screen, Type in "net Start WuAuServ" without quotes > hit Enter. After it finished you can close it.

Now your Windows Update logs will now cleared.

Thank you.

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

After installing Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade on a new seagate 320 g hdd on a Toshiba L300 Laptop with 32 bit that had Vista with latest SP on a 120gb hdd.then installing the sp1, the windows updater will not download and install updates. As it was I had to manually download the sp1 to a flash drive from my desktop and put it on the laptop. No problems there, but was hoping it would solve the Update problem, but didn't. I get the "Fail" error codes. 1. 80070570 and 2. 8007001F. I have 52+ KB updates and not one of them will download and install. Called MS help and for two days they had me try different things. They even took control of the computer and couldn't figure it out. I checked memory and did a chkdsk on the new HDD. In desperation for trouble shooting I put the Vista HHD back in and ran updates with no problems at all then I reinstalled the 320 G HHD. I didn't have a BSOD at all. But I downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials and when I did that I would get the BSOD for what ever reason. I had a hard time getting it uninstalled because as soon as you would start windows, within a few seconds I would get the BSOD. When I finally got the Security Essentials uninstalled the BSOD Went away. Have no Idea what one had to do with the other. I just want to get the updater to work. Any Help

What???

That makes zero sense.

one thing at a time.

Which computer do you want to install Win 7 on?

Do you have license?

One license = 1 machine.

Every now and then I need to update MSE virus defs but Windows update downloads files GRR! What do I do about this pest? I just disabled the windows update service which obviously prevented me from downloading MSE defs

Have you tried setting Windows Update to not Download updates?
You could also set it to not check for updates while you are on holiday.

Earlier this week, my Lenovo desktop received an automatic download. The computer was tied up in installing this for about an hour. When the download was complete, the computer seemed to be scrambled. Basic operations no longer were available. Old programs were missing. I cannot open, e.g., Help, pin apps to the Task Bar, go to Windows Update...it goes on and on. After two days of internet searching, I remain baffled. I know this is vague, but if anyone can suggest something, I'd be greatly appreciative.

My girlfriends PC is having big issues with windows update...

It used to work fine to download and install the updates. However, i have since tried numerous times and it keeps failing. There are now 16 high priority updates to install. They all download fine but when it comes to installing they all say...failed! No error number appears so I can't find an explanation.

The very odd part is if i turn on automatic updates or install them from another site (thesoftwarepath.com) the computer goes black and then a BSOD appears with error numbers - 0x0000008E(0xc00000005, 0x80844310, 0xf89d52c, 0x00000000)

Numbers in brackets may be off a bit i lost my bit of paper where i wrote them.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:strange windows update problems

I would first suggest scanning for viruses and spyware. They've been known to interfere with updates.

Clear the browsers Cache and History files. Click on Tools/ Internet Options / Temporary Internet Files section, click the Delete Files and Clear History buttons then on the OK button.
Close the browser and reopen it and try again.

Hello all,

I have what I think might be a unique problem with windows update. Essentially, any update of any size that I attempt will never be downloaded. Progress never moves past (0kb total, 0% complete), and I can't seem to check for updates either. What's more, when I try to install updates downloaded directly from Microsoft's website, the standalone installer gets stuck on "Checking for updates on your computer."

I've run system file scan, and it came up with no issues.

Here's what makes the situation weird. Around a year ago, I was completely fed up with Microsoft's endless haranguing about updating to Windows 10, so I ran a batch file, as per instructions from someone on a forum, to get rid of everything W10 related. I'm kicking myself now, but I didn't save the file, so I don't remember exactly what that entailed. I know it uninstalled a handful of updates, but I don't remember if it somehow redirected requests by windows update to Microsoft's servers to 127.0.0.1, and now I don't know how to check if that's what's happening.

I know running a random .bat from some guy on a forum without fully understanding the ramifications was a boneheaded thing to do, and I've certainly learned from the experience, but now I need help figuring out how to reverse whatever I did to Windows Update if anything.

Thanks in advance

Hi together,

I have got a strange problem with IE 9 and Windows Update (Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit SP1).

I cannot open any https-site. Everytime I want to open a https-site "the page cannot be displayed". With firefox it works fine.
The other problem is, that I cannot run Windows Update for a while. Last time was on 23 Feb. When I search for updates now, it says error code 80072F8F. When I search the internet for this error code I find a lot of solutions saying the computer time / bios time is not correct. But it is. Date and time are everywhere ok on my computer.
I think both problems have the same cause.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Strange Problem regarding IE and Windows Update

I am suspicious of a couple things :

with certain websites that my clients use daily, I have encountered a few problems with internet explorer.

one of them being, the 64 bit version of internet explorer does not work with some websites and functions. the other being that you have to have administrative rights to execute certain commands, right click, run as...

the other thing i am curious about is the date and time setting.

Did you...

Check for virus?
Replace motherboard battery?
verify date and time in CMOS?
update your BIOS?

Hi All,

I'm having some strange issues with my Windows update that started this past week. I have my options set for Windows to notify me to download and install updates. I always do allow the update, but have it set that way out of curiosity so that I can see what the updates are.

Recently, when I choose to download the update, the little yellow shield sits in my tray and, when I hover over it, it shows, "Downloading updates: 0%." I'm not sure if this has something to do with Services or RegEdit--as I have tweaked both recently.

Any thoughts?

(I'll be on the board for a while this morning, so we can certainly resolve this problem)

Update: the little yellow shield disappeared without asking me to install . . . weird.

Hello there.

I recently did an optional update through Windows Update and have since noticed an apparently-related issue. The update was Office 2007 SP3.

Since installing this update, I have noticed that -- a few minutes after startup -- when I am browsing the internet (I use Firefox 7.0.1) I hear an IE-style navigation "click" in the background. It is the default Vista sound that is common when navigating my PC and when navigating with Internet Explorer. This sound happens in the background when I am not even touching the mouse.

I hope this is something benign like a Genuine Windows authenticity check, but I have not found anything on-line to confirm this. Does this sound to any one like a virus or anything?

Thanks!
Iggy

I am running Windows 7 with Avira anti-virus and CC cleaner. I just went through a lengthy session working with Chaslang in Malware to get rid of some residual garbage left by a "garbage program." The remaining issue is that I cannot update Windows 7, either automatically or manually and he suggested I chat with you after we cleared up the malware problems. I get this message:

After checking history, I found I have not been able to apply any updates since September. I don't know whether this "garbage program" Reimage, caused this but I really need this fixed

I have a custom build desktop.
I have a maintenance and backup HDD drive where I boot from it and make my backups (system image and every Friday I do a data backup). This is a 1 T drive, used mainly for backup, but in an emergency I can work from it as it has all main programs on it.

My daily working drive is a SSD (C: for OS and programs) and a D: HDD for data.
After installing Win 7 64 Home Premium (on the SSD) with all latest drives and some programs, I ran the so called SP2 witch install all updates till last April. Then I run the manual Windows Update, it found some updates and installed them.
Then I cloned the two drives (SSD and HDD) to the backup HDD in two partitions.

Both are running well, except the backup drive. It doesn't run properly the Windows update.
On the backup drive, by the automatic update (only important and MS products, not Recommended updates), it finds the updates, and a icon appears on the notification area telling that there are updates to be installed. When I open Windows Update, there is nothing there.
If I choose to manually search for updates it runs for hours and hours and then I close it.

As once I had a similar problem and I deleted the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder and it began to work, I deleted it on the backup drive, but nothing changed.
Strange is that some important updates were installed automatically.
I've searched for help and I was taken to a MS site where I downloaded a WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab. W... Read more

Follow these instructions exactly.
First, set Windows Updates to never check for Updates.
Next reboot your computer, then install KB3020369, if not installed.
Then install KB3172605.

Windows updates should return to normal. You can then reset your updates to automatically check for updates if desired

Earlier today, I went to do the Windows Updates on 2 PC's. Both are running XP Home SP2 and had just recently been reformatted, reloaded, and activated, all in the past 10 days or so, and I was just now getting around to the updates. Anyway, upon trying to download and install the first updates, both PC's had error messages!!!! I wish I would have got some screen shots, but I didn't. So I clicked on the 'work-around' links that are sometimes provided, and even tho' the errors were different, the fixes were more or less the same: check your firewall settings, and check you security settings in IE for 'Trusted Sites or Zones'... I thought this was weird because I've done Windows Updates a billion times and NEVER had an error about the security settings or firewall settings. Neither PC had a firewall installed other than the built-in Windows firewall. So, one one PC, I just turned off the Windows firewall and that fixed it. On the other, turning off the firewall didn't work; I ended up having to add Windows Update to the list of trusted sites in IE! This is on a newly formatted PC! NO security settings had been altered since Windows was installed. VERY strange. Anyway, adding the updates to the trusted list fixed the 2nd PC. This post has become far too long and quite tiresome and boring.... just thought I'd share a strange occurance.... Windows.... you just never know, do ya'????

Answer:Strange Windows Update Occurance

While the above post was just a little story, I have now had problems with Windows update on 4 more PC's, and 2 of those were clean installs formatted and loaded yesterday. Is something up with the Windows update site? I've NEVER had so many errors (and different errors on each PC) when trying to update. There's no rhyme or reason to it. Some PC's with clean installs update fine, others get errors. Sometimes all I have to do is disable Windows firewall, other times I have to manually open some ports (443 and 80), and other times I have to manually re-register some .dlls via the command prompt. Does anyone have any idea what's up??? Is anyone else having Windows update problems? I read one other thread today where someone else is having similar troubles.... any ideas or thoughts on the subject will be appreciated.

Maybe I'll just use AutoPatcher full time

Patch Tuesday this week rolled out lots of critical updates. Since then, we've had a handful of users here experience a strange issue that's starting to drive me crazy.

Problem:

Users are reporting that they can no longer print. The dialog box freezes up regardless of the application being used. Outlook, Adobe Reader, Nuance PDF, & Notepad have all been tested to freeze up. All of the printers here are network printers. At the same time, computers lose ALL internal network access (makes sense why they can't print), but the shares DO respond fine to pings. Google and all other non-internal sites work fine.

So, a majority of the users who get this issue try to reboot. Computer gets stuck on Shutting down... forcing a manual restart. Logging back in will allow printing and internal network access again, but only for a short time. Users do not have local admin rights. A couple times, the computer would freeze booting up leaving the user with just a black screen and a movable cursor.

If I try to login to that computer as an admin, I get a "Service Pack 1 is now installed" message. The strange part is, most of these computers (with the exception of 1) have all had Service Pack 1 installed a LONG time ago. There have been multiple Windows updates since then with no issues. Even after logging in as an admin though, I lose internal network access after a short period of time. There are no other Windows updates pending, and the only ones that have rece... Read more

Okay I'll try to list as many details as possible, because I've been working on this for a while, and I'm at the end of my rope here.
Windows updates error out. All the updates are related to Microsoft Office 2007 (security updates, MS Works updates, etc). The error it gives is 80070641, which points to Windows Installer Service according to multiple websites. Sure enough, Windows Installer Service is stopped, and set to manual, but this is where it gets weird.
After setting the service to automatic and restarting the computer, the service was started. I tried to to updates again, go the same error, and then i checked the service, and it was stopped and set to manual again.

What has been done:
A variety of virus/malware cleanup tools that are part of the cleanup process at the repair shop i work at (combofix, malwarebytes, antivirus, etc).
sfc
Windows Tweaker (which includes an msi repair and an windows update reset)
I deleted all pending xml files in winsxs
Multiple "fixit"s

System is Vista HP SP2 32-bit

Answer:Windows update strange errors/behavior

>> Windows updates error out. catalize <<

My first guess would be that for some reason; one or more of the updates were interrupted either when downloading or while originally being installed or something like that.

Have you tried a Windows System Restore back to a restore point BEFORE the "Windows update strange errors/behavior" first occurred?

Usually when you first start Windows Update, it automatically sets a new Restore Point before downloading and installing any updates.

This is done so that users are able go back and reverse the process, should something go wrong.

Hello,

First post here, hope some kind soul can help! I have Windows Update set to 'Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them', and this has been the setting since installation. When I start Windows update, over the last couple of days, it offers no new updates, and yesterday I got the 8008005 message.

Very strange however, is the fact that when I view update history, it shows that updates have been installed over the last few days that i know I have not installed myself - again, I do not have the settings configured to 'install updates automatically', but to 'Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them'. If I start WU from the start menu and open task manger, and right click on WU and 'go to process', task manger highlights explorer.exe.

Also, I have navigated to the file location and tried to manually execute wuapp.exe, and nothing happens, nor does anything happen when I try to execute wuauclt.exe from the file location.

I have tried:

Open the Windows Update troubleshooter - Microsoft Windows Help

But this does not seem to have fixed the issue... Any advice would be gratefully received!

I did an Update and Shutdown last night. This morning after booting up, everything was different. A different wall paper, most items from my desktop and systray missing, only a few items on the start screen, and a couple of apps asking for passwords on the desktop.

Before panicking, I logged out, and logged back in again. Everything then came up normal. I only have one account. Any idea of what happened.

Answer:Windows Booted to Strange Account After Update

Im going to make a guess here and say that you either have malware on your system and/or were hacked. The totally different desktop and the fact that there were strange apps asking for your password makes me think someone is trying to get at your data. I would update any anti-malware programs you have installed and restart into safe mode and run all the scans you can.

If you dont have any installed, I recommend:
Comodo Internet Security
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
SuperAntiSpyware

Run them in that order as well. See what this brings up.

I have noticed some strange behaviour with windows update. Doesn't happen every month but does occur enough that I wondering if someone could shed light on what is happening.

I monitor my download speed with NetMeter Evo 2.0. Windows update download will start normally with download speeds reaching my max of 3 Mbps. But when anywhere from 60% to 80% of the files have been downloaded, the download may stop - that is, the displayed speed in NetMeter goes to 0. At this point, I open a browser to google.com (to 'tickle' the Internet connection ) and suddenly Windows Update download takes off. If the download stops again, I repeat this weird approach. Seems to work. Is this just coincidence or is there something going on here?

I get similar behavior in Vista and 8.1. The download(s) will start out like gangbusters then suddenly drop to zero. The last few percent of the download(s) will eventually trickle in and the updates will install. ? I'll have to try opening FF to see if I get the same results as you.

Hi there

Sometimes I use a wireless logitech keyboard on a laptop -- the FIRST time this is used it always defaults to US layout even though I've set the keyboard to ENG - GB (UK) and it's the GB version of Windows installed. I know it's the US since the double quote for example on the UK keyboard is over the 2 numeric key while on the US the double quote is at the @ key (2nd key after the L on the 2nd row of letters on the QWERTY layout).

BUT the laptops keyboard is ALWAYS OK -- and once I've tapped ONE SINGLE KEYSTROKE from the LAPTOPS keyboard the external one magically reverts correctly to the UK layout for the rest of the session. !!!!

Not a showstopper - since easily overcome now I'm aware of it - but Windows certainly throws up some strange defects. !!!

Hi folks, I am starting to suspect the presence of malware on my machine, due to some odd behavior of Windows Update, as well as issues with the Action Center.  If I look at my Update History, it will give a blank list and perpetually state "You have not tried to install any updates".  However, if I instead look at my "Installed Updates" list, it will show many older items.

When I start the Windows Update Troubleshooter, it will return a message stating it found and repaired a problem with update ("Potential Windows Update Database error detected 0x80070490"), but the behavior of Windows Update doesn't change (and the troubleshooter will re-find the same problem each time re-run).

Norton 360, Norton's Bootable Recovery Tool, Windows Defender Offline, Malwarebytes, and ESET's online scanner all give a clean bill of health.  Any suggestions on how to proceed, short of a format and re-install?

I have 3 machines here at work that are having issues with Automatic Updates, and I was wondering if anyone else has had these issues.

It starts off with the machine running very 'slowly' to the user. (I know, that is one of the most frequent complaints, so I almost dismissed it when it first came in.) I went to the user's desk, to find this laptop had the fan on high constantly. Pretty unusual for a laptop. I checked the task manager to find the processor pegged at 100%, with one of the svchost.exe processes using all available processor cycles. After much troubleshooting, I finally brought up process explorer to find out more. it turns out the svchost.exe process that was doing this is the parent process of the Automatic Updates process. There are also 3 WMI jobs running that shouldn't be under another svchost.exe. I shut the system down, unplug the network cable, then power is back up without a connection to the internet. It boots up fine and operates fine. I then plug in the network cable and am able to run Windows Update manually and get the latest updates. I reboot, and it seems to act normally.

After that, 2 helpdesk (desktop) computers are reported to have hte same issue. I go through the same sequence that fixes the first one, and the problems seem to go away, for a while.

the next day (yesterday) I get reports from all 3 of these users that the machines still go through periods, about once per hour, where it will slow to a crawl as before for... Read more

Hi,
Check the display driver and NVidia driver for any change, if the previous drivers worked without any problems, switch back to them and

Hi,
I've got strange problem with windows automatic update of GPU drivers. Here it goes, when I am using default latest manufacturer drivers of AMD [HD7970], PC works perfectly, now when windows forces me to update his drivers of GPU, than everything goes bizarre. All of the sudden there are spikes in GPU usage when there is no application open that operates with gpu.
I mostly use Photoshop and Illustrator (my profession is graphic design) and now when I open/edit a document the work area starts blinking, and blinking occurs when this spikes on gpu usage happens. This newer happened before I use latest manufacturer drivers. Is there any possibility to disable or to not update GPU drivers, or any other solution, because this thing is really annoying?!
And yes since PS and Ai supports GPU usage, I try to disable in preferences GPU usage and problem still remains. Other programs that not support GPU usage works fine.

Hello Navje,

If you like, you might see if you may be able to hide the update to stop it from installing.

Hello,

I posted this in the Vista section as I didn't know what the problem was, but it appears it's an infection so I'm re-posting it here. I've recently been having a problem involving the Host Process on Vista Home periodically closing, the error message reading: "Faulting application svchost.exe, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x47918b89, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e03821, exception code 0xc000071b, fault offset 0x000888f5, process id 0x4c8, application start time 0x01cb470a75d7a5d5."

Also, Windows has been running notably slower since this has been occuring. I thought this might just be some wacky Windows malfunction but I also get strange pop-ups and redirections as if it were spyware or something. Hmm. Nothing comes up on a virus scan though.

Another problem tied with this is that Windows can't update or look for updates anymore. When I try to, it says "Windows could not search for new updates. Code 80072EFE". System Restore won't create new restore points either.

I did a HJT scan and a DDS scan and am posting the logs. However, I also did a GMER scan but it would crash every time it reached the "Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1" part of the scan and wouldn't finish, and even gave me a BSOD after the program closed.

Hello,

I have recently installed some new RAM on my system. I had an original problem with some OCZ reaper I bought which gave me bluescreen errors but now I am using Corsair Dominator (4GB on vista x32 SP1).

I have reset the jumpers on my motherboard before using this new RAM but since changing the parts around I have encountered a number of annoying errors.

When I try to check for updates i get the error code: 80072F8F
When trying to sign in to MSN an live mail: 0x80048820
When trying to update windows defender: 0x80072f8f

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks
Simon

Hi there guys, noticed a strange red line in my Windows Update screen.
Posting screenshot here (it's in italian, but I'll offer a rough translation of the red line underneath)

The red line says something like "Some settings are handled by the company/organization".
I'm like... wut? Which company or organization? If I were at work I'd be thinking about some LDAP setting and it would be all right, but here I'm at home, I have a very straightforward network and configuration.

I'm not 100% sure, but I seem to recall this red text line wasn't there after the fresh install I did some weeks ago.
Still I can't think of anything that I tweaked that might have affected that.
The only thing I changed is in the windows hidden advanced settings, where I chose so that Windows Update doesn't automatically download/install stuff, but asks for my permission first.
Can't think of anything else either.

Can anybody help me first understanding what this line really means, and if I can do anything to "solve" it? (supposing it even is a problem actually... it might be nothing serious)

You might have used group policy editor or your registry editor for the update settings. This is exactly a result of this and it should not bother you much.I have also changed these settings and I also get this message.

Hi,
last night I updated my Lumia and now I have a little icon in the top left hand side of the screen that I've never seen before! it looks like a little white rectangle with three horizontal lines of different lengths. does anyone know what this is?!
the other strange/ annoying thing that's happened is that my pictures live tile is showing photos that I don't have - they seem to be stock pictures, but they're not in my album. I've tried turning it off and on again, and doing a soft reset, and deleting the tile, but nothing's working...
any suggestions?
thanks!

Answer:strange new icon on nokia lumia 625 after windows update

The icon in the too left is the mobile signal indicator.
The images shown are by default. It slides through the images on your phone. As you start to take pics it will update with these instead.

Hello,

I patched my windows 8.1 x64 PC on Tuesday with all available updates. Today, July 10th, KB2919355 popped up "Windows 8.1 Update for x64-based systems" claiming I need the update to ensure I receive future updates. I'm pretty positive I've installed this two times previously...should I try applying this update again or wait a few days to see if it was a mistake and/or disappears from windows update? Anyone else see this today?

Thanks!

Answer:windows update kb2919355 appeared today - strange

It's a cummalitive update - containing various other related updates - that's why it will different sizes depending of what's aleady installed - this one probably contains an update for a previous one that is now superceded. No harm in installing it.

I've updated and selected updates in this window before, suddenly I can't see any updates there at all. WU tells me there's 33 optional updates available, when I click and the window to select those and install them appears I can't see any of them. =/ Check the attachment to see what I'm talking about. I've changed setting in Windows Update to see if that was the cause of the problem but it didn't help. Important updates (when I had them) weren't showing either... Help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

When I start my PC and check to see if the install worked, I am told it hasn't, any clues please?

Answer:Windows 7 updates don't update

I have been through this today and fixed mine.
There are ways MS suggests when you right click on the failed updates and read the help files that contain links to MS downloadable tools of sorts.
After reading about and trying some of the tools with no success I took a hint I read between the lines about running the one with "service pack" in its name alone. I had 10 updates available one of which had service pack in its title. It was "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243)"

I ran it alone and it took. Remaining were 4 security and 4 updates for windows and an IE9 update.

I then tried the 4 updates for windows alone and they failed.

Long story short, I tried some alone until they started working and got them all in.
Look at my screen shot and see the order in which I used. The order goes from the bottom up. The Hot Fix you see is one of MS's suggestions I tried that changed nothing.

As long as this is not every time eh?

Where are all these files stored( both failed and for update files)? In which folder exactly?

What is this strange message on blue screen? Last week I heard someone mention it on a podcast - if not for that, I would have been sure my system had been hacked! Read on ...

Have Lenovo Thinkpad W550s that was upgraded to Win 10 Pro from Win 7 Pro a few months ago. Hadn't used my computer for a few days (it was probably in sleep mode). On Tuesday eve, 15 December 2015, try to start up and see blank screen; had to hold down power button and then reboot. Here's where it gets interesting ...
I get a blue screen (not BSOD) with a message in large letters (like 10 mm high) that says something to the affect of "Don't worry, your files are still safe". The blue screen background slowly cycles between dark and light. After more than 2 minutes the screen displays a new message, I don't recall what it was. And finally my computer boots into Windows.

Sorry, I am not at my computer now, so cannot tell you what version it is currently running or what the update history is.

So what happened?

Answer:BSOD when using Chrome, Windows Update not working, PC acting strange

Now after a few attempts Avira is scanning. Not sure why I was getting errors before. I am to the point where I may try to reload windows. Also to give more detail, when in Chrome alot of times I will get the "Oh Snap" where the whole page will just quit and I have to reload. I also noticed that the screensaver no longer works. It tells me I need a newer video card or driver for the screen saver. Below is my driver.
15.301.1801.1001
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

After looking in my device manager it seems my driver is the issue. Ever since I downloaded that stupid AMD Gaming Evolved Driver Software it has screwed up my PC. I just tried to do the "roll back driver" option in device manager but the computer just sits there forever loading. Seems I have found the problem but now I need the solution.

I've recently been having a number of problems on my Vista Home laptop, especially involving the Host Process periodically closing, with the error message reading: "Faulting application svchost.exe, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x47918b89, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e03821, exception code 0xc000071b, fault offset 0x000888f5, process id 0x4c8, application start time 0x01cb470a75d7a5d5."

And at random times, svchost will use almost 100% of the CPU causing it to run very slow.

Also, Windows has been running notably slower since this has been occuring. At first I just thought this might just be some wacky Windows problem, but it's gotten much worse and I also get strange pop-ups and redirections, so I'm sure it's been infected. And Google Chrome won't even load webpages anymore.

Another problem tied with this is that Windows can't update or look for updates anymore. When I try to, it says "Windows could not search for new updates. Code 80072EFE". System Restore won't create new restore points either.

I'm posting the DDS and GMER scans, but the GMER scan would crash every time it reached the "Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1" part of the scan and wouldn't finish, and even gave me a blue screen after the program closed. So, the GMER log includes only Sections and C drive included.

Thanks for any help!

Answer:Host process hogs CPU/closes, strange pop-ups, Windows won't update

Hi -

I'm not sure we'll be able to resolve all those issues, but we can take a look. Sometimes it's better to simply reinstall the Operating System. There are a couple of indicators in those logs which have me wanting to investigate a bit more. Please run this rootkit scanner.

Scan With RootKitUnHooker
Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get the following warning, just click OK and continue.

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Hi, When I try to install Windows updates, I get the following error: "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" And It Keeps for about 15 minutes.I tried to Disable all the Services From Msconifg.exe but it didnt work for me.  Please Help.  Lenovo Ideapad Y500

Answer:Ideapad Y500 Windows Update-failure configuring windows updates

hi HussinBhy,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

With Windows 8 there was a certain service that has to be disabled "Nalperion Service" then proceed with the updates manually by 4 or by 5 updates only

If Windows 7, You just have to make sure your Antivirus is not blocking anything by disabling them temporarily
and most of all Try installing it by 4 or by 5 updates only,  as it may be overlapping some updates if you will install everything at same time.

Best Regards
Solid Cruver

Answer:windows service pack 1,security update for windows 7 fail updates

Try System Restore to before the problem began. This might force Updates to install correctly this time.

If not work through these steps:
Windows Update - Reset - Windows 7 Forums
System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008

If these don't help check the System File integrity: SFC /SCANNOW Command

Vista machine cant perform win updates - no service
My stepson has been using bittorrent :/ - I think hes gotten some infection. Can't start the windows update service. There is not even a service called Windows Update defined.

I tried the wuagent download and force, nothing.

I ran malwarebytes and it did not find anything. Can't run defender because it wont download the updates.

I tried starting the service as it appears on another vista machine (system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs) but that does not do anything.

See image at http://www.techsupportforum.com/f217...ce-472865.html for screen shot (can't reupload)

So my copy of windows 10 is ready, and i want to update everything else beforehand. but i go into windows update, and when i hit "check for updates" it says checking, then returns an error code 80244019. i already tried running the windows update troubleshooter app from their website...no luck with that. it says fixed, but i still have the same issue.
i'm assuming this is the reason that when i click "lets continue" on the windows 10 update notification, its just says "working on it" for infinity.
i have not tried booting in safe mode yet, because the last time i tried that, something happened and i couldnt log back into windows and ended up having to bring it to the microsoft store and had to have them clean install windows.
any thoughts?

Hello! This is an issue that I've never come across before. When I try to update my computer (Windows 7 64bit) I get an error message stating "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I already tried this before, but to my disappointment I still receive the message. Can anyone help me solve this issue? Thanks! If anyone needs any further information, please do ask. I'm a bit of a rookie though, haha.

BEFORE doing anything drastic such as resetting WU, try this -

Windows Update Settings - Change

Open Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Never Update...'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Now open Windows update again
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Update automatically'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.

I`m having the problem... Update just hangs... I thinks it`s the latest update for the update agent... As far as upgrading to Windows 10, just use the media creation tool... As long as your copy of 7 is legit, you can just upgrade, create an iso, or a usb install.

Windows update does not download anything. There are 20 important updates. I tried choosing just one of them, the screen displays 'Downloading updates...', but nothing is downloaded. I tried rebooting but this did not work. What could possibly be wrong? I have scanned my laptop with Avast, Malwarebytes, etc & nothing was found. I have had this type of problem before and rebooting solved the problem. Not this time. Any suggestions?

Hi,
I have just upgrade my operating system from Vista to Windows 7.

I am finding that Windows Update is not loading any updates. It just seems to hang. All the computer is saying is "Downloading Updates" and every thing stays at 0%.

Updates worked fine with Vista.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Answer:Windows Update is not loading updates

Hi thermite, welcome to the forums

How long have you kept it at the 'Downloading' stage? I have noticed that depending on some updates I have experienced an extended 0% stage but after a while it began at well above 30%.

I am having a problem with windows update. It will not search for any updates, whenever I try to get it to search for updates it finds an error code 80070422. I have tried microsoft fixit tool and the report says Repair default Windows Update locations Not Run. I am thinking maybe resetting windows update locations could help, but I don't know how to do that manually. I have also tried restarting services required by windows update, which did nothing. I also scanned for viruses. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:windows update 14 updates 8 failed

Welcome
You may not want to hear this, but the solution to your problem is to manual upadate and do a few at a tome.
Since the updates require a restart, when there are many conflict can and do occur.

Hi,
I am attempting to update a new install of Windows Vista that is currently at SP1.
Initially, attempts to run the update failed with error code 80080005, but I got by that with the help of a post on this forum. The advice there was to change the settings to never update, exit Update, re-enter it and and set it back to update automatically. That worked fine.
Now, however, when I open Windows Update and click on Check for updates, the screen flashes immediately and no update are found. I don't even think it's checking.
Any help with this problem would be appreciated.
Thanks,

I don't know what's happenening. But this last Windows Update notification (10 September week) is not showing any updates for me. 6 updates but what updates??

Check it:

What's wrong?

Answer:Windows Update not showing any updates

Hi try clicking " Restore hidden updates" which can be seen in your screenshots.
If that does not work follow this : Windows Update - Reset
If your problem still occurs Try pressing "change settings" under windows update change it to never check for updates, then press ok. Next change it back to recommended settings, always check.... and so on, then press ok.
Please provide feedback, with how this goes.
